Medical Matters BRAIN GYM FOR THE ACTIVE RETIRED DR DAVID BUCKLEY Retirement is a stage in life where you get to spend more time for yourself, your family and your friends. However, you may not be as mentally challenged after retiring because you do not have the pressures of everyday working life. Your brain is like your body. It needs exercise. “Use it or lose it”. Here are some tips to help keep your brain working well and they may help add joy and happiness to your life. 1. Play games to challenge your mind – chess, word and number puzzles, jigsaws, crosswords, cards, sudoku, etc. 2. Pursue a new interest such as learning to play a musical instrument, learn a new language, play bridge or take a night course. 3. Break your routine – take a different route to the shops or change the order of your morning routine. 4. Pursue cultural activities with friends like going to plays, museums, concerts, galleries and the cinema. Read a book – discuss it with a friend. 5. Keep up hobbies such as sewing, carpentry or take up a new hobby.

6. Choose physical exercise that challenges your brain as well as your body, e.g. dancing, golf, pitch and putt, gardening, hill walking, orienteering, tennis or bowls. 7. Keep up your interest in sports, politics and current affairs by reading the newspaper and watching or listening to the news every day. 8. Plan a short holiday or break away every few months to break the monotony of everyday life – “everyone needs a break”. 9. Learn how to use a mobile phone and/or computer – get texting, twittering and emailing! Use your brain rather than a calculator when doing simple maths. 10. Join an active retirement group and make new friends.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Tralee Rock, Blues & Motorcycle festival at the Meadowland Hotel in aid of Kerry S.P.C.A. MEADOWLANDS Hotel is the venue for the 5th Annual Tralee Rock, Blues & Motorcycle Festival on November 9th-11th2018 in aid of Kerry S.P.C.A. Run by the Gin Palace Bar-Stewards who have organised an exciting line up of entertainment over the weekend. The Festival kicks off on Friday, November 9th at 8:00pm with Rock DJ David Foley followed by “The Tomcats” Blues band at 9:00pm. The headline for the evening is the Inglorious BarStewards. On Saturday afternoon there

will be a ride out from the hotel followed by a bike show with trophies and prizes. Stalls and shops will be open throughout the day. The evening kicks off with Mario Mannering at 7:00pm followed by Jamie Stanton and his Band before Chapter 2, headlining the festival. There will be a major raffle, party games and presentation of trophies and prizes throughout the evening. Sunday will see a more relaxed pace with an early Blues session in Johnny Frank’s Bar to end the festival. The festival is for charity

with all profits going to Kerry S.P.C.A., a 24 hour, 365 day a year service providing shelter to neglected and injured animals. The organisation is completely run by volunteers and relies heavily on public donations and fundraising to assist in the prevention of cruelty to animals. K.S.P.C.A. has been on the go since 1960 and in that time thousands of animals and birds have been rescued and each with its own story. The festival will raise badly needed money to keep K.S.P.C.A in operation and help with

essential kennel and cattery upgrades. All welcome for an exciting weekend of Rock, Blues & Motorcycles! For more information please contact 066 718 0444 or info@ meadowlandshotel.com. For donations, please contact www.kerryspca.org.

Cara Credit Union Celebrate four in a row success Credit unions have been voted Number One for Customer Experience in the 2018 CXi Ireland Customer Experience Report, taking the award for the fourth year running. This is the first time, anywhere in the world, that the same organisation has taken the award for four consecutive years. Cara Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin joins 250 other credit unions across the Republic of Ireland in celebrating this outstanding achievement. The CXi Ireland Report is an annual survey which asks consumers to rate their experiences of 156 brands across 10 different sectors. More than 2,500 customer experiences were evaluated and credit unions again emerged as the overall winners, being rated highest for empathy and for the commitment of their staff.

Speaking to Pa Laide, CEO Cara Credit Union “We are delighted to receive this award for the fourth consecutive year, it comes at a special time for us as we continue to celebrate the 50th year of our Credit Union. The Credit Union difference is simply, we put our members at the heart of everything we do. We are very lucky to have extremely hardworking and committed teams in all our three offices and we pride ourselves in serving our members with a personal touch. Our members understand that all decisions are taken at local level, by people who will take time to understand their needs. We would also like to thank all our member, without their support we would not be in a position to continually improve services and support our local communities.” “Trust is at the heart of the

relationship and they pride themselves on always acting in their members’ best interests. This is evident in the commitment of their staff and volunteers, who go above and beyond in their interactions with their members. Not surprisingly people rank them highest in scores for Empathy, Time and Effort”, said Michael Killeen. of CXi Ireland

The 2018 report highlighted the very significant gap which exists between people’s views of the customer experience offered by credit unions compared to the banks. Indeed, the leading bank within the survey was in a lowly 79th position.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FLU VACCINE Question I’m thinking of getting the flu vaccine. Can you tell me about this vaccine? Answer Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition. The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you: • Are aged 65 or over • Have a long-term medical condition, for example, diabetes or chronic heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease • Have an impaired immune system due to disease or treatment • Have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 • Are pregnant • Live in a nursing home or other long-stay institution • Are a carer or a healthcare worker • Have regular contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs If you are aged 18 or over, you can get the vaccine from your GP (family doctor) or pharmacist. Children can get the vaccine from a GP. The vaccine itself is free of charge if you are in one of the recommended groups. However, doctors and pharmacists may charge a consultation fee when they give you the vaccine. If you have a medical card or GP visit card, you can get the vaccine without being charged a consultation fee.

JON has now played alongside such luminaries as Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Ben Sims, Luke Slater, Danny Tenaglia, Joseph Capriati, Pan-Pot and Dubfire. His calendar is a collection of major festivals and iconic clubs; from Fabric London, Space Ibiza (one of the few artists to have played in every room at the club over the 12 years he was a regular guest), Output (NYC), Zig Zag (Paris), Kristal Glam (RO), to Sunwaves (RO), Awakenings, Glastonbury, BPM, Ultra Miami, and regular stints in South America. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Kerins o Rahillys “ Mommas” mini 7s competition Says Danny Leane , a true blue “We had over 55

moms take part in this event ,they trained twice a week for 6 to 8 weeks , all the moms/grandmother’s and daughters played fantastic! It was a great day out for the club & raised money towards GAA gear for all young ladies, we are already looking forward to next year .”

Tralee fails to keep pace with Killarney in IBAL litter survey The summer survey of litter levels by Irish Business Against Litter

has seen Killarney rise 10 places to 6th in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. Tralee, meanwhile, has failed to improve on its ‘moderately littered’; status and is in 34th spot. An Taisce assessed litter levels over the summer months on behalf of IBAL. 77% of towns and cities were found to be clean. None was deemed a litter blackspot, but five were ‘littered’ or ‘seriously littered’ and scored worse than last year. Fermoy in Cork was the cleanest of the towns surveyed. The An Taisce report for Killarney stated: “A great achievement for Killarney to score so high during the peak tourist season. Clearly great care is taken with the overall presentation of the town. Street bins on Beech Road had a sign indicating ‘Dry Recyclable Litter Only’- the addition of such bins should encourage more recycling with very little effort on behalf of the public. Some examples of the top ranking sites included Bishop’s Lane, New Road, Main Street and Recycle Facility at Main Street – the latter was spotless and it is quite a rare occasion in IBAL surveys that Recycle Facilities are deemed to be spotless.” The report for Tralee stated “There were no seriously littered sites or litter blackspots in Tralee but there was a distinct shortage of litterfree sites with almost all moderately littered. If some of the latter were improved this could make a big difference to Tralee’s overall ranking e.g. Denny Street, The Square and Milk Market Lane. Pairc an Piarsaig was the only top ranking site – it was wasn’t just good with regard to litter but also presented very well e.g. seating, bins, grass, planting etc.” The most recent statistics available on litter enforcement show the cost of litter wardens is 10 times greater than the revenue collected through litter fines. While the cost of the service has risen over the past 6 years, the revenues collected have halved from €1.7m to €0.84m. “By any measure, this represents a pitiful return on taxpayers’ money and should be addressed. These resources could be put to better use elsewhere.” says Horgan.

Churchill Players say thank you! “Thank you from all in Churchill Players Drama Group for the great support we received last Thursday night 11th October. We know the weather wasn’t great but we had a great night and wish to thank the following sponsors: The Oyster Tavern, Spa, Total Cleaning Supplies Tralee, Garveys Supervalu , Tralee, The Haven Pharmacy Tralee, Lloyds Pharmacy, Tralee for their wonderful spot prizes.” says Veronica Kelly 18

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT WEEK! Skincare is literally one of my favourite things, whether you’re looking for yourself or to buy a gift for someone, this list will help! So I’m here this week to help you pick some skincare that hopefully will suit anyone.

SERUMS:

Serum’s are a great gift to get someone as everyone can use them, dry skin, oily skin, older skin, younger skin - serums are the best! The three serums I have used and love are…

EYE CREAM:

I feel like eye creams are a great gift to buy as I find people are slow to splurge on them for themselves. I feel like eye creams are often overlooked but they’re very important - for all ages! Kiehl’s Creamy Avocado Eye Treatment This is amazing to moisturise the eye area. It makes the eye are so soft and hydrated! It’s also used and love by Kylie Jenner soooo I mean can you go wrong? Very well priced at 26 euro.

Lancome Genifique Serum One of my most used serums and great for any age or skin type. This serum only needs to be used in the morning and works on the skin for 24 hours. It also comes in great value gift sets at this time of the year. Available from Helen in CH or Sam Mac Cauleys for 73 euro.

Benefit It’s Potent! Eye Cream Got dark circles or fine lines? This cream is for you!(or the person you’re buying it for, but treat yourself… I won’t judge) I love this cream. Not many people realise Benefit do skincare, but they do… and it’s great!

Clarins Doluble Serum Another great one, more for a slightly more mature skin. It’s definitely an anti-aging serum. It can be used for younger skin also and is perfect for even the most sensitive skin. Available from Cindy in Ch or Debenhams in Manor for 72.

Lancome Genifique Eye Pearl Advanced More of an eye serum than a cream but still… this stuff is amazing, especially if you suffer with puffiness around the eyes. The applicator for this alone is enough reason to get this, it feels amazing. This is a bit more high end at 55 euro.

Farsali Unicorn Essence Serum A perfect serum for someone in their teens/ twenties or someone who loves makeup! I’m obsessed with this serum and it smells amazing! Available on Farsali.com or Cultbeauty.co.uk for 55 euro.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week. I’ve been loving a good cardio sweat sesh so this week I’m going to talk about the importance of cardio. Now when I say cardio is important I don’t mean jogging excessively on the treadmill for hours, hating every second, punishing yourself for that ‘bad food’ you ate. NO. I’m talking about doing different exercises that make you feel good and improve your cardiovascular health while doing so. It might be swimming, boxing, a gym class, walking the dog, cycling anything that gets you up and moving and feeling good! I used to hate ‘cardio’ because what cardio meant to be was doing the same exercise EVERY time. Aka jogging for 30 mins. When I started switching up the cardio workouts I was doing, introducing swimming, sprints, interval training, boxing, gym classes etc… I really started

enjoying it! I love getting a good sweat on and getting my heart rate up! I also fell in love with the Cardio classes in Titan Fitness, I loved the feeling I got after them. Doing cardio is important to maintaining a healthy heart. Your heart is the centre of your cardiovascular system, and is vitally responsible for giving your body life! Of course, doing excessive intense cardio is not good either. It will put your body in a catabolic state and burn your hard earned muscle. Then if you lose too much muscle it will slow down your metabolism in turn making it harder to burn fat. So if you think introducing a training regime where all you do is intense cardio sessions 5 times a week with no weight training, you’re not going to benefit! If you think you have fallen into a rut of either extreme(all weight training or all cardio) just try and introduce something new to switch it up a little.

26

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Friday 12th October 2018

Of course you can do things like HIIT training with some weights and get the best of both worlds. All I’m saying is, cardio is not the devil when done correctly. And it will actually help your performance in the weight room.

What do you want, I’ll go get it. Husband: I’d like to have 2 scoops of vanilla with chocolate and caramel syrup whipped cream and a cherry on top. Wait, let me write that down for you so you don’t forget. Wife: You don’t have to write anything down, I’m not old like you. I’ll remember and bring it back in a few minutes. After a while, the wife comes back with a tray and proudly boasts, I remembered everything you asked for, Ive got eggs, sunny side up, bacon and orange juice. Sighing heavily with his hand on his head, the husband says, No you didn’t! You forgot the toast!!

A young man is caught fishing illegally for lobsters. He has two in his boat when the police approach him. The young man claims he’s not poaching them and they are his pet lobsters, he’s just taking them for a swim. “I let them play in the water for a few minutes but when I whistle they come back to me.” So the police let him place the lobsters in the water and command the young man to call them back. “Call who back?”

HURLER ON THE DITCH

Two 90 year old men, Pat and Tom, have been friends all of their lives. When it`s clear that Pat is dying, Tom visits him every day. One day Tom says, “Pat, we both loved hurling all our lives, and we played through all the ranks, right up from U-12 together for so many years. Please do me one favour, when you get to heaven, somehow you must let me know if there`s hurling played up there.” Pat looks up at Tom from his death bed, “Tom, you`ve been my best friend for many years. If it`s at all possible, I`ll do this favour for you.” Shortly after that, Pat passes on. At midnight a couple of nights later, Tom is awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to him. “Tom, Tom.” “Who is it?” asks Tom sitting up suddenly. “Who is it?” “Tom it`s me, Pat.” “You`re not Pat. Pat just died.” “I`m telling you, it`s me, Pat,” insists the voice. “Pat! Where are you?” “In heaven”, replies Pat. “I have some really good news and a little bad news. “Tell me the good news first,” says Tom. “The good news,” Pat says, “Is that there`s Hurling in heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before us are here too. Better than that, we`re all young again. Better still, it`s always spring time and it never rains or snows, so there`s no need for cancelled fixtures. And best of all, we can play all we want, and we never get tired...” “That`s fantastic,” says Tom. “It`s beyond my wildest dreams! So what could possibly be the bad news?” “You`re starting corner-forward on Tuesday evening.”

TORQUING CARS! TESLA’S BIG REMOTE UPDATE

We tend to think of electric cars as simply zero-emissions vehicles that get us from A to B, mostly over shorter distances. We often overlook the fact that they facilitate several other elements too. One now being increasingly used is the ability to have software updates sent ‘over the air’. In other words, your car’s ability to do certain things, or new things, is expanded without needing to have anything done physically. Here’s what Tesla told us earlier this week on that front: “Every single Model S, Model X and Model 3 ever built will receive new features and improvements from Software Version 9.0.” No need to go to the garage or have bits added or replaced. Your Tesla just gets upgraded; full stop. I like their phrase that it is a reminder when owning one of those cars that it will “only get better over time”. After the latest update, they say you’ll wake up with a car that is “smarter, safer and more intuitive” than before. It is their most substantial update yet and means the user interface is simplified, as well as there being new elements. Nice to know that by using the firm’s app you can start a vehicle software update without having to be in your car at all. Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles built with Hardware 2.5 (from August 2017) now let you record and store video. There is also a new application launcher that brings all your apps together in one place (calendar, web browser, rear-view camera, phone, charging etc). All eight external cameras from their Full Self-Driving hardware in each model are now active too. the firm cites the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - the US safety body - as confirming that the Model 3 (supposedly due here next year) is the safest car it has tested. It follows the Model S and Model X in achieving the “lowest probability of injury” of any vehicle tested.(Indo Motoring )

ASK EDDIE & GILLIAN (INDO MOTORING )

Car-value expert Gillian Keogh teams up with Indo Motoring Editor Eddie Cunningham to help you make the right choice with your next purchase. I am driving a 2005 Audi A3 2.0 TDI that has 370,000km on the clock. Pretty much worthless unless I get a good trade-in deal. Tax is €800 a year, and in the last three years I have spent about €2,500 on repairs and servicing. I love the car but feel like it is time for me to change. I live in Dublin and cycle to work, but I drive to the midlands two or three times a week over eight months of the year. My average mileage is roughly 16,000km a year. My budget is around €20k, excluding trade-in. Ideally, I would like a 4dr saloon, something stylish (but not necessary) like a BMW 3 series. Three to four years old would be ideal. Also something with good tech spec and hands-free. I’d love to be able to play my Spotify through the car too. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Gillian: Around €20k would get you into a 14-plate BMW 318d SE, but I would suggest you go back to a 13 and look for an M Sport in auto. The stereo system has Bluetooth capability, so Spotify should be good to go for your journeys. Motor tax is around €200, so it’s a huge saving on your current rate. Another option is the Mercedes C-Class. You will need to stretch your budget a little to get into the new model, but a C180d/C200d Avantgarde Auto would be a nice switch up. If you wanted to jump on the hybrid train, a Lexus IS300h is worth a look. Eddie: You’ve got an Audi, so try Audi for a deal with your car and an A4 saloon. You’ll get a lot of car for your €20,000. You’re borderline diesel/petrol, which is to your advantage. Others worth a look are well-specced Volkswagen Passat and Peugeot 508 models.

WHAT IS ADBLUE?

You’ve probably seen containers of AdBlue stacked up for sale at filling stations, but unless you’ve owned a diesel powered car or van that’s fitted with SCR – or Selective Catalytic Reduction – you’ve probably not had to buy or use it. So if you’re not sure what AdBlue is for, which vehicles use it and where and how often you need to top it up, don’t worry as you’re not alone. Our guide to AdBlue tells you everything you’ll need to know. So what is in AdBlue? AdBlue is a liquid solution of urea (the stuff found in urine), and when it meets a hot exhaust system it releases ammonia which is a catalyst to a chemical reaction that converts dangerous Nitrogen Oxides into two harmless products – water vapour and Nitrogen. Both products occur naturally, and so can be pumped out of an AdBlue equipped car without any ill effects. AdBlue works on a metered system pre-set by your vehicle’s manufacturer, so you don’t need to know much more than when and how to fill it up. Your handbook will explain that in detail. With tanks varying in size from 5 to 20 litres, and a mid-size family diesel consuming a litre of AdBlue every 600-odd miles, the requirement to top up the AdBlue may be quite frequent for high mileage diesel drivers. Fortunately, you car will monitor consumption and give you a series of dashboard warnings as the level drops. It’s wise not to ignore them, as once the AdBlue is all gone the car may not start until the tank is topped up again. (This is to ensure cars don’t drive illegally with high exhaust emissions.) Topping up the tank is simplicity itself. Nowadays the AdBlue filler cap is often located next to the diesel filler, and AdBlue is typically sold in handy containers that dispense without drips – important, as although the AdBlue is pretty harmless to people, it can be quite corrosive to vehicle paintwork or other less obvious things like your car’s wiring. It can also smell pretty bad if you spill a container of it – as we know from experience.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR 20X20 LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER BUT WILL IT TRANSFER TO THE PLAYING ARENAS? It would be interesting to know how many people who are reading this heard of the 20x20 campaign this week. And how many women out their read about the campaign? The new campaign aims to increase participation, attendance and coverage of women’s sport by 20% by 2020. While it seems a very worthwhile project on paper only time will tell with it change the mind set by many to women’s sport. From a soccer point of view I can speak with some knowledge as I chair the Southwest Regional Committee and am on the FAI Women’s National Committee. Before we look nationally girls soccer in Kerry is certainly in a healthy state due to the work being done in the clubs and schools. We now have over 20 girls teams in the Leagues including for the first time a girls team in Tralee with the St Brendan’s Park u16’s. Those is that club deserve great credit and hopefully now that they are in a u16’s the can introduce younger age teams. One of the issues that both the Schoolboys Girls League and the KDL must look at is providing an u17/u18 League for those that are playing at 16’s this year. Tralee Dynamos did have a women’s team a few seasons ago and also some underage girls but they don’t have a team at the moment – so there is a challenge. They have some very good girls playing in their boy’s teams so hopefully this will lead to an u12 team next year. And of course the Kerry u12 girls reached the Gaynor finals last summer and Killarney Celtic were recently runners-up in the National Blitz final only losing out to a last minute goal. So the Kerry Schoolboys League and the KDL will look to see how we can work towards the 20x20 ambitions. On a wider point Kerry has over the years provided many more girls Internationals for the Irish national soccer teams than the boys. And presently Savannah McCarthy, Hannah O’Donoghue, Rebecca and Aoife Horgan are playing in the Women’s National League.

40

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Nationally the FAI’s Board has been joined by the Chair of the FAI Women’s Committee Niamh O’Donoghue who has Kerry connections. And the development of the girls and women’s game is now in the hands of the 8 Regional Committees with Kerry in with Cork and West Cork. Kerry is a county that certainly has a long and proud tradition in women’s sport. Look at the Kerry Ladies GAA, golf, basketball, rugby with a number of girls also playing on the national stage, rowing and hockey so it would take much too long to mention individual players. And In all these sports there are many volunteers at clubs all around the county and at county board level working hard to promote the girls and women’s games. But sports fans can be said to be fickle. They will follow successes and in the most part the gender is not the most important thing. This was proven this year with the success of the women’s hockey teams. The whole country got behind the team but the challenge for those in the sport is to translate this into participation at local level. Again Kerry is probably well placed here as Kathryn Shaw – who won 3 World Cup Masters medals in the sport with Ireland – has a team in IS Killorglin. I am sure she would love to talk to any Tralee school that would be interested in introducing the sport to girls or boys. But will hockey ever be in a position to garner huge coverage or big sponsorship – not for a while yet. Think of other minority sports like rowing and everyone becomes a fan with the likes of the O’Donovan brothers are doing so well. Again in Kerry we have Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley at the top level who bring attention to their sport and all the clubs in Kerry work hard to bring girls into the sport. But rowing will always be a minority sport and as I said will gain big viewing figures only on the big Olympic and World occasions. The same can be said about women’s rugby, basketball where again it is great to see National League back in the county and the appetite is certainly there as was shown by the crowd that were in Castleisland for Team Tom McCarthy’s first home game. Friday 19th October 2018

GAA is probably the biggest girls and women’s sport in the county and I include camogie in this – with soccer closing in – and they certainly have had plenty of success at underage and senior level. And look at what the work being done in that sport added to by a sponsorship from giants Lidl has done with over 40,000 at their All Ireland finals. The Clanmaurice girls have done wonder for camogie in the county. Disappointingly there have been negative times for Ladies GAA both in Kerry and Mayo and this does attract lots of attention. But overall things are positive on that front too. There is no doubt when you get a committed bunch of girls they are probably more dedicated and determined than a boys team. But trying to stop the fall off at 16 years is one of the big challenges – in both sexes. So what are the challenges of reaching the 20x20 goals? Coverage comes with success and success attracts sponsorship and audiences. But to get to that level of success in any sports needs money from sponsorship and from Government. Any initiative that puts the spotlight on female sport is to be welcomed and hopefully our Minister for Sport Brendan Griffin TD will be able to get the funds to help all the sporting bodies reach the goal of a 20% increase by 2020. This will lead to more success, more coverage and more people watching girls and women’s sport which will then see the continued and increased sponsorship coming into the sports. And finally if I would say to all parents bring their families to girls and women’s games as well as boy’s games. Go an watch your local girls soccer team, girls GAA team etc and bring both your boys and your girls. They are the participants and audiences of the future. IS BETTING TAX THE RIGHT WAY TO GO? The Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA) has said that the Government’s 100% betting tax increase (from 1 to 2%) will cost 335 jobs in the South West. They have also said that 9 shops will close in the county as part of 56 in

Kerry, Cork and Limerick. This will lead to the loss of 55 jobs. This will come in on New Year’s Day and will further affect rural Ireland as it’s the Independents that will suffer rather than the major players. While everyone acknowledges that the betting industry must pay its fair share an across the board increase like this is the wrong way to go. Why not increase the tax on profits and not on turnover and then the bigger the company the more they will play. Now I have to say I rarely go to a betting shop but they have spent a lot in modernising over the last few years. However there are now fewer and fewer independent bookmakers left. And while Tralee town will always be well served the rural towns won’t. And what will that mean? It will lead to more and more gambling on line and like drinking at home there is no control over that. It really is getting harder for those with a gambling problem to avoid adverts and sponsorships from bookmaking firms. And at least if people are gambling in their local shop there can be some ‘oversight’ into the amounts being gambled. The only limit on the phone is how much money you can get into your account. So if an increase on the betting tax as introduced by the Government will lead to the closures stated by the IBA then it is one that needs re-visiting. MIXED WEEKENDS FOR TRALEE SIDES: Following on from my opening article on women’s sport there was great news for the Na Gaeil ladies as the claimed the Munster Intermediate Club Championship title. The Tralee girls were an easy 1-11 to 0-05 points win over Aghada from Cork. The Cork side won the All Ireland Junior championship in 2017 so would have been seen as tough opposition for Na Gaeil. But with the likes of Meaghan Sheehy, Marie Quirke and Meabh Barry scoring freely they were 0-09 to 0-02 up at the break. Once Meghan O’Connor hit the back of the Aghada net early in the second half the Tralee girls were well on the way to a great win. Na Gaeil will now travel to UK for the All Ireland quarter final where they will play the winners of Dunedin Connolly’s and Kingdom Kerry Gaels. Na Gaeil’s game is set for the weekend of November 3/4th. While not actually a Tralee side we can stretch the boundaries to Clanmaurice who have reached the Munster Junior Club Camogie final. They defeated St Joseph’s Doora Barefield in the semi-final at the weekend in a game that only sparked into life after the break. The game was played in Ennis and it was the Kerry side that lead by 3 points to 1 at half time. Things improved vastly in the second half and two goals from Sara Murphy and Alanna Maunsell det the girls on their way. While

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER there was only a goal between the sides late in the game Clanmaurice hit two late points to win by 5 on a score line of 2-08 to 1-06. Crecora of Limerick beat Dungarvan in the other semi-final and will now face Clanmaurice in the Munster final on October 28th. But the hopes of having a Tralee team in the Garvey’s County Senior Football Championship were dashed when Kerins O’Rahillys lost out to Dr Crokes 2-19 to 2-10. The game was tight in the first half with the sides level at 2-05 to 0-11 points. Rahillys made the perfect start hitting the net after 30 seconds and when O’Brien got their second it looked good for them. But then things turned in the 44th minute when Jack Savage was dismissed for a second yellow card and then a short kick-out was intercepted and finished to the net and from there the Killarney side pushed on. Overall Kerins O’Rahillys are certainly going in the right direction under Michael Quirke. They will take a lot of positives from this season including their win over Dr Crokes. If a few of the crucial minutes of last Sunday’s game went the other way then the result could have been different. They will certainly look forward to next year. In the County Championship Dr Crokes still do not know who they will be playing in the final as Dingle and East Kerry have to do it all again this Sunday at 3pm in Austin Stack Park. BIG WIN FOR TRALEE WOMEN: While it might have been one way traffic a win is a win from a Tralee rugby point of view. In the Munster Women’s League Division 1 they were very easy winners over Richmond. In the Munster u16 Conference 2 Listowel/Tralee went down 27-7 to Killarney. In the West Munster u14 League it finished Abbeyfeale 12 Tralee 7. This weekend in Munster u16 Conference 2 Listowel / Tralee takes on Kanturk at 11.30. In the Girls u16 Munster Conference B the same Kerry combination goes to Mallow for an 11am kick off. It is a busy weekend on the road for the Tralee RC as in the Munster Junior League Division 2 Tralee goes to Bantry Bay while the Women are at Fermoy for their Division 1 clash. AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the final of the Steve Kennedy Memorial as part of a 10 race programme starting at 7.42pm. On Saturday night it is the fundraiser for Lixnaw GAA with the feature race being the Paul Wallace Memorial A7 525 yards with lots of spot prizes and music after racing. On Sunday the racing starts at 6.36pm for an 8 race program. The track is currently taking entries for the KGOBA A6 525 yards starting on November 9th, the Red Mills Unraced Bitch stake

which begins on November 3rd and the Kingdom Hurdle 525 yards for 12 to 18 dogs that have never raced over hurdles. That starts on December 7th. WARRIORS WIN ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors topped the 100 point mark for the second year in a row away to DCU Saints. This time they won 102-92 in Dublin The home side started the better with Tralee down 10 points early on but the Warriors but scores from Darragh O’Hanlon, Eoin Quigley, Fergal O’Sullivan, Paul Dick and Kieran Donaghy saw the home side lead by just 3 at the end of the first quarter. The game remained close and it was towards the end of the second half before the Warriors took the lead thanks to a big basket from Donaghy. Evan and Dick were amongst the scorers that saw a 10 point deficit turned into 6 point lead 52-46. In a good third quarter the game was very tight but the Warriors maintained their 6 point lead 79-73 with just 10 minutes to play. The home side were never going to lie down and with the home crowd behind them they tried to get back into the game by the Warriors were able to maintain their lead and a Fergal O’Sullivan two points them over the 100 point mark. Donaghy hit the final to as the Tralee side made it two wins from two and the ideal response to that first loss at home to Killorglin. Jordan Evans was the top scorer for Garvey’s on 30 followed by Paul Dick on 24 and Fergal O’Sullivan on 14. Garvey’s PRO Alan Cantwell said that the two wins on the road set the Warriors up perfectly for this weekend’s home game. “We expect another packed house at the Tralee Sports Complex and are all very excited to see how the game goes on the new timber floor. Griffiths College Swords Thunder will be very tough opponents but the squad is in good form. The game tips off at 7.30pm but will all the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors home games you need to come early. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB NEWS: In the Lee Strand Boys u14 Division 2 Pool 2 St Brendan’s won by just one point away to St Anne’s 31-32. It was a great start to the new season as Farranfore is always a tough place to go. The Tralee side were 4 points up at the break 1612 but were down a point with 14 seconds to play. However the St Brendan’s boys found the basket and their defence held firm for the last few seconds. In the u16 Division 3 Pool 2 it finished St Brendan’s 45 to Gneeveguilla’s 40. Phoenix Costello was the top scorer with 13 points. In other games in Senior Mens Division 2 it was St Anne’s 38-57 St Brendan’s , in Women’s Division 2 Kenmare Kestrels were the winners

57-34 and in the u18 Division 1 St Brendan’s lost by 4 to Gneeveguilla 55-59. CUP DRAWS AND OTHER SOCCER NEWS: The draws for the next round of the FAI Youths Cup has just been made with the winner of Killarney Celtic and the Park playing Avenue and Tralee Dynamos away to Ballingarry. In the FAI Junior Cup which is the main highlights this weekend. From a Tralee point of view Tralee Dynamos are away to Killorglin, Strand Road welcome Glin Rovers of the Desmond League, The Park travel to Shannon Town and Classic got to Shannon Olympic in Clare. In the SFAI National Cups The Park 12’s had a great win away to Corbally United. Meet Becky Projection

“Always be selfie ready!”

Becky's Starting Scan. (We used a digital scan, this means we no longer need gunky impressions) With us at Bridge Place Dental, Becky was able to see a projection of her finished smile at the start of treatment. We then needed to repair the worn front tooth with dental bonding (long lasting, cost effective and not destructive to tooth structure)

NO WAITING LIST FREE CONSU LTATION

It’s not just straight teeth. It’s great straight teeth!’ Rebecca Spencer

Also, the gap between the front teeth, was highlighted at the start of treatment (which means no surprises) - this was then restored with dental bonding.
