LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES William was wondering where to find the title documents to his house. He had a mortgage on it which is now paid off. In Ireland there are two main types of title. 1. Land registry land which is the majority of the land in Ireland and where the land registry records the land its title, map and its attributes and makes this available to the public at large. 2. The Registry of Deeds where the various documents transferring or mortgaging the land over the years are recorded in this registry. But the title consists of a bundle of title deeds. Due to compulsory registration the number of lands to which this applies is gradually shrinking. When William bought his house, the mortgage would have been recorded against the land in either the land registry and registry of deeds and all his title documents would have been lodged with his lending institution. These can only be released if the mortgage was paid off or the land was being sold or remortgaged usually. As William has paid off his mortgage he can apply to his lending institution for his title deeds back and also they will provide him with these and a note of the release of the mortgage known as a discharge which is recorded in the land registry or registry of deeds. In relation to the title deeds these consist of a folio fileplan if it is land registry land which is a five page document recording on page one the description of the land , page two has details of any property taken out of the land and perhaps sold off, page three records the ownership in this case the full details of William’s name and address and the last page records the burdens e.g. rights of way, sporting rights etc or mortgages. Page five consists of the land registry map. If the property is registry of deeds land each land transfer and/or mortgage and/or death on title is recorded and available hence the bundle of title deeds arising. In addition to these documents there will be other title documents e.g. confirmations in relation to roads and services, copy planning permissions and an engineer’s declaration that the property is built in compliance with planning permission if built after planning permission came in in 1964 and if necessary also compliance with building regulations if the property was built after these came in. It is useful also to have an engineer’s declaration that the property on the ground corresponds with the land registry map. Depending on other issues or attributes relating to the property other relevant documents relating to title may apply. Law quip: A Man or Woman’s home is their castle in a manor of speaking. Medical Matters FLU VS COLD BY DR KATE VERNON The common cold is, as the name suggests, quite common! Most people will have 2-4 colds each year. The flu (influenza), however, is rarer; most people who think they have the flu just have a “bad cold.” Symptoms of a cold include blocked or runny nose, sore throat and cough but no fever. You may feel under the weather, but it won’t stop you from attending work or school. You should be back to your normal self in about a week. Symptoms of the flu are more severe. These also include blocked or runny nose and cough, but also high fever, chills, and body aches. You may be laid up in bed for a few days and symptoms may last for over a week. Flu can lead to complications such as pneumonia in high-risk people (e.g. very old or very young, pregnant, or those with chronic medical problems such as chronic lung or heart disease or diabetes).

Colds and flu are caused by viruses, so there is no point taking antibiotics. Treatment for cold and flu aims to help symptoms, e.g. keeping warm, paracetamol for aches, nasal sprays and decongestants for blocked noses, cough bottles, lozenges for sore throats, etc. You need to drink plenty of fluids and rest. Getting the flu vaccine each year is the best way to prevent flu. Washing your hands regularly is extremely important to prevent the spread of germs that cause cold and flu. You don’t need to see your doctor with the common cold. Reasons to seek medical attention for the flu include high temperatures that are not improving with paracetamol, if you are unable to keep down fluids because of nausea or vomiting, or if you are in a high-risk category.

Shackleton’s Carpenter – New Vic Productions

Malcom Rennie brings to life the story of Harry McNish, the ship’s carpenter aboard Shackleton’s Endurance during its attempt to reach the Antarctic. McNish, was the only man who challenged The Boss following the sinking in Antarctica. His skills played a vital role in saving the entire stranded crew of 28, yet his bravery and ingenuity were not rewarded with a Polar Medal. Alone and destitute, McNish challenges him one last time. If you are fascinated by the story of the Endurance and Tom Crean’s legendary heroism on that voyage, this production will introduce a new element. Tickets €16/14 Saturday 27th October @ 8pm

Oceanworld Aquarium will hold its annual Dingle Maritime Weekend in early November Dingle Maritime Weekend will be held on Saturday 3rd and

Sunday 4th November 2018 at Dingle Oceanworld. Entry is free to all talks and seminars . The weekend series of talks is aimed at maintaining an awareness of our maritime heritage and our marine environment.See an example of one such talk below ‘Bád na nGort nDubh 1818 – Tragedy, Conflict and Loss in West Kerry’ “A shipwreck, a mass drowning and a tragedy that left a dark cloud over two West Kerry communities” On the 31 January 1818, 21 men from paróiste an Fheirtéaraigh, on the tip of the Dingle Peninsula, were drowned in a tragedy which became known as ‘Bá Bhád na nGort nDubh’. A schooner, Brilliant, of Rothsay, came upon the shore of West Kerry, her sails tattered by storms, drifting in the tide. Several seine boats from the parishes of Dún Chaoin and an Fheirtéaraigh followed her, in the hope of salvaging materials of value, but during that work, 21 men, all from paróiste an Fheirtéaraigh, who had been in a boat called ‘Bád na nGort nDubh’, were lost. The mass drowning was the cause of much conflict and aggression between the two communities, as it was said that the Dún Chaoin boats didn’t try to rescue any of the drowning men, and left them to their fate. This conflict lasted for generations. Thankfully nothing of that conflict survives amongst the communities today – the event is but a terrible tale from our history.

Program commences to halt Tralee’s 60% water leakage Works have commenced in Tralee to improve the water supply for residents and businesses by tackling the high levels of water leakage in the town. Irish Water, working in partnership with Kerry County Council is currently replacing almost 3km of problematic water mains in the Kevin Barry Villas, Mitchel’s Road, Garryruth, Hawley Park, O’Rahilly’s Villas, Strand Street and Castle Street areas. The old, damaged pipes will be replaced with modern, polyethylene (plastic) pipes. Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme will continue in Tralee into 2019, when a further 2.3km of the cast iron water mains will be replaced in the James Street, Canal New Road, Upper Castle Street, Walpole’s Lane, Boherbee, Lower Basin View, Rae Street, Caherina Cottages and Caher Anne Road areas. The works will be carried out on behalf of Irish Water by Coffey Northumbrian Ltd. The works involve the decommissioning of old back yard cast iron water mains and back yard services. New water

mains will be constructed along the public road and new service connections will be installed from the new water main to individual properties. “Much of the watermains network in Tralee dates back to the 1800s. As they get older, cast iron pipes can become severely corroded and have a high level of leakage as well as being subject to frequent bursts, which in turn leads to water discoloration. At present, it is estimated that some two-thirds of the water supplied to Tralee is lost to leaks in the network. By addressing this leakage, Irish Water is aiming to save more than 3 million litres of water every day in the town”, said Steven Blennerhassett, Leakage Reduction Programme, Irish Water. The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water shut offs. Where water mains are being constructed traffic management may be in place during this time. Local and emergency traffic will be

maintained at all times. Customers living in these areas will be contacted directly by Coffey Northumbrian Ltd. to assess their current water connection arrangement and discuss the best way to connect the new service. The first information evening took place last Thursday for residents in the Hawley Park and Boherbee areas. As works progress Irish Water will organise more of these information evenings where

residents can come and meet members of the project team directly and raise any queries or issues they may have about the proposed works. “We will continue to work with the community to minimise disruption. Customers can phone Irish Water on Callsave 1850 278 278 if they have any further questions about the project,” added Steven Blennerhassett

New Day Service for Stroke patients to be piloted in Tralee and Listowel A NEW pilot Stroke Day Service, providing nursing and physiotherapy supports to people recovering from a stroke has been launched in Tralee and Listowel, Co Kerry. The one day a week service will deliver a six-week programme and is now open for referrals. Led by Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre for Older Persons, Tralee and Ard Chúram Day Care Centre in Listowel, with the support of the HSE, the service will offer clients additional supports to help them through the rehabilitation process after a stroke. Brian Carmody, himself a former stroke patient and who now runs the only voluntary stroke support service in Kerry, said: “This is the best news I have heard in a long time. I had my stroke 12 years ago and at that time once you were out of the hospital and finished with the treatment, there was no support. Now we have a service that will help stroke sufferers here in Kerry. It’s vital for them and their families to have a place to go and meet fellow stroke sufferers and get expert help for all of us who have suffered a stroke. It’s important to let

them know that they are not alone or isolated anymore with this new Stroke Support service in Kerry.” People availing of the service will receive physiotherapy, nursing care and other allied professionals inputs, peer support and can avail of physical and mental stimulation programmes, morning tea and a midday meal. Chairpersons Paddy Garvey of Baile Mhuire and Tom Pierse of Ard Chúram said: “We are delighted to be leading this new service in Kerry. Both groups are grateful to the HSE for supporting this service which was identified by the Kerry Stroke Support Group. When a person survives a stroke, it’s not only their life that may be turned upside down, it’s their family and those closest to them who are also affected. There can often be an impact on people’s capacity to access services to promote their rehabilitation. We are confident that the new Stroke Day Service in Tralee and Listowel will be a success and of immense benefit to all stroke survivors. It is our hope we will demonstrate the effectiveness and value for

money of this communitybased approach and that similar projects will be developed in other areas.” Both Chairpersons would like to acknowledge the support of staff and management in both HSE Community Services and University Hospital Kerry as well as the National Office for Service Improvement of Older People. The Stroke Day Service will commence in November and it

will operate one day a week in Ard Chúram Day Care Centre, Listowel on Mondays and in Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre for Older Persons, Tralee on Fridays from 10am to 3pm in both locations. For more information about the new Stroke Day Service in Tralee, contact Rose at 066 7123373 or in Listowel, contact Louise at 068 22986.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: MATERNITY LEAVE Question I am pregnant but I have only been working with my employer for a few weeks. Am I entitled to maternity leave? Answer If you are pregnant while in employment, you are entitled to maternity leave, regardless of how long you have been working for the organisation or the number of hours worked per week. You can also take additional unpaid maternity leave. The Maternity Protection Acts 1994 and 2004 provide your statutory minimum entitlements in relation to maternity at work, including maternity leave. You are entitled to 26 weeks’ maternity leave. You can also take up to 16 weeks’ additional unpaid maternity leave, which begins immediately after the end of maternity leave. Under the Maternity Protection (Amendment) Act 2004, you must take at least 2 weeks before the end of the week of your baby’s expected birth and at least 4 weeks after. You can decide how you would like to take the remaining weeks. Generally, employees take 2 weeks before the birth and the remaining weeks after. If you qualify for Maternity Benefit (see below) you must take at least 2 and no more than 16 weeks before the end of the week the baby is due. Your entitlement to pay and superannuation during maternity leave depends on the terms of your contract of employment. Employers are not obliged to pay you if you are on maternity leave. You may qualify for Maternity Benefit from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection if you have enough PRSI contributions. However, your contract with your employer could provide for additional rights to payment during the leave period, so that, for example, you could receive full pay less the amount of your Maternity Benefit.

Betting Tax Hike Will Close Kerry Bookies! The Government’s proposal to hike Betting Tax by 100pc will cost 335 jobs in the South West, according to an analysis by the Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA). Based on its engagement with members since Budget 2019 was announced last Tuesday, the IBA estimates that 31 bookmakers shops will close permanently in Cork, 16 will close in Limerick, and a further 9 will permanently shut their doors in Kerry. The job losses are likely to be split by county as follows: Cork 184, Limerick 96, Kerry 55. Sharon Byrne, IBA Chairperson, said: “We are shocked that the Government could allow a 100% tax increase on

our sector without fully understanding the financial and human cost of this move. It is not just the direct costs involved that are the issue, it is the thousands of families that depend on their jobs in a betting shop and the suppliers that service the sector that will be affected too. “The pain will be particularly acute in the rural Ireland where it is often more difficult for people to find alternative employment. For some big chains this will mean shop reductions but for already many smaller independent operators, most of whom have been an integral part of their local community for decades, expect to be wiped out by this measure.” “There is no business in

Ireland that could take a 100% increase in its tax. The only increase this will achieve will be in job losses and shop closures. Several hundred people across Ireland are now wondering if their shop will be closed for good on New

Year’s Day. I’d love to be able to say they won’t be affected and offer them some comfort but I can’t. This is totally in the hands of the Government and it’s officials”.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT WEEK! As we all know, Christmas is coming and it’s a time where there are lots of Christmas Markers & gift buying. What I want to talk about this week is being wary of counterfeit makeup. Sometimes these stalls can be selling makeup brushes or products at a quarter of the usual retail price, which you may think ‘great i’m getting a bargain’ - but you’re not. Counterfeit makeup is very dangerous - it is manufactured in non sanitary conditions and has been reported to contain high levels of bacteria. It can also contain harmful ingredients that is illegal to use in makeup sold in a store that is harmful to your health. Reactions from using fake makeup products can include acne, psoriasis, serious skin rashes and eye infections. These reactions also take a few days to appear so you may not even think it was the fake product you used. I know the temptation to buy

these products, you think ‘sure what harm can a lipstick/ lashes/makeup brush do’ I was surrounded by them in Thailand, I could have got the most amazing looking fake palettes, lashes and brushes for my kit as a Makeup Artist(apparently that’s what some Artists do). But putting those unknown chemicals and bacteria near my face, or a clients’ is a huge no no for me! You don’t have to spend 50 euro on a Chanel foundation if that’s out of your budget, but rather than buying a fake for a tenner, get a pharmacy dupe. Brands like L’Oreal, Revlon, Rimmel, Floramar, Note Cosmetics and

more do really high quality products for low prices with ingredients that won’t harm you. So next time you’re at a stall that sells makeup - if it’s being sold at a stall it’s not real. Remember the points I made today, it’s not worth it, it harms your skin, it’s not sanitary, WALK AWAY! That’s what I had to tell myself over and over again in Thailand. Yes it’s annoying that they’re selling Mac lipstick for 5 euro, but it’s not real, not good for you and will harm your skin!

FITNESS!

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week.

CURRENT FAVOURITE WORKOUT I’ve been really into doing full body workouts at the gym lately, just to change it up! Here’s my current favourite workout.

Most people consistent with what they want, instead they set themselves unrealistic goals that they ‘have to’ reach within a certain amount of time. Rather than doing this torture to yourself, try something else… try to be consistent. Being consistent means knowing what you have to do, little by little, day in and day out, to reach your goals. It means that if you ‘mess up’ that you just go back to being consistent straight away. It’s all about balance and consistently doing what needs to be done. There’s nothing wrong with being a bit more relaxed when it comes to all things health and fitness related, I’ve come to realise that being 100% on track 100% of the time for me personally, is not living. BUT. For the next 12 weeks I want to be consistent AF and see what results I can achieve.

WARMUP HIIT sprints (20 secs on 40 secs off for 10-15 mins) WORKOUT Weighted step ups 3 sets of 10 each leg Kettlebell swings 3 sets of 10 each arm Maybe you have some area of your life where you’re putting in some of the work sometimes, so you’re not reaching your full potential because you’re not consistent. This is your sign, be consistent, put in the work you know needs to be put in.

Sumo Squats 3 sets of 10 Walking Lunges 3 sets of 10 GRACE FIT UK UPPER BODY SET • Bicep curl • Hammer curl • 2 arm tricep extension • Underhand kickback • Arnold Press • Bent over one arm delt raise • Upright row • Front raise Then sometimes after the workout to cool down I do 10 mins uphill walking.

Emotional Health using flower remedies Dr Edward Bach, M.B., B.S., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., D.P.H., was a physician and homeopath, who spent his life searching for the purest method of healing. He believed, as do many people today that attitude of one mind plays a very important role in maintaining health. At the time of his death in 1936 he had developed some 38 flower remedies from wild plants, trees and bushes. The purpose of these remedies is to support a person’s struggle with emotional factors such as anxiety or trauma that may impede physical healing. They are also used preventatively during times of stress and are particularly helpful for people who feel generally tired or unwell, without a specific medical diagnosis. The remedies are gentle in action and may be taken by people of all ages, from small children to elderly people. They are also beneficial to animals. People do not have to be physically ill to benefit from the remedies. Many people go through times of difficulty and fatigue, when negativity creeps in. At these times the remedies are invaluable in restoring the balance before physical symptoms appear. When choosing a remedy suitable for your specific needs it helps to focus on the root cause of your particular problem. Some of the more popular remedies include: Hornbeam: “Monday Morning Feeling....” Hornbeam is for weariness, mental rather than physical and for those who wake up doubting their

ability to face the day’s work. They find it difficult to face up to problems or cope with the day’s program, although in fact, they usual get everything done. Agrimony: “Hide problems behind a cheerful face....” Agrimony is for those that appear carefree and humorous, but this is a mask for their anxieties, worries or even real inner torment, which they may be trying to conceal from themselves and others. They dislike being alone and are very socialable, seeking company as a distraction. White Chestnut: “Unwanted thoughts, mental arguements....” White Chestnut is indicated for obsessive worrying thoughts that seem impossible to control. Sufferers cannot let go of unhappy events or arguments and keep reliving them mentally. This may lead to a troubled mind and it can be difficult to concentrate during the day or to sleep at night For more information on the Bach Flower remedies or if you need advice on which remedy meets your needs just call into any of our stores and we will be happy to discuss these with you. Until next time, stay healthy.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE

A MAN WENT TO THE POLICE STATION...

...wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. “You’ll get your chance in court,” said the Desk Sergeant.“No, no, no!” said the man. “I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I’ve been trying to do that for years!”

LET ME TELL YOU HOW I BECAME A MILLIONAIRE: First, I bought one apple for a dollar with my savings. Then I went out on the street and sold it there for two dollars. With the two dollars I bought two apples for 1$ each and again sold them for 2 dollars each. Now I had 4 dollars and was able to buy 4 apples, which, you may have guessed, I sold for 2 dollars each. Now I had 8 dollars and I bought 8 apples and so on and so on... A few days later my aunt died and I inherited her assets.

A MAN WAKES AND FINDS HE IS SHRINKING, GETTING SMALLER AND SMALLER He immediately panics gets dressed and runs out the door. He try’s to get a cab but he’s getting smaller and smaller and he can’t flag one down. So he takes off on foot and runs toward the hospital while getting smaller and smaller. He makes it to the hospital and sees there is a long line but he is getting smaller and smaller so he runs past the line and up to the desk. He jumps on the desk and yells “ You have to help me I’m getting smaller and smaller!” The nurse puts a hands up and says “ Sir, excuse me but your going to have to be a little patient.”

IN HONOR OF TONIGHT’S LOTTO, ONE OF MY FAVORITE JOKES TO TELL A deeply religious man, whom I will call Dave, finds himself in dire financial trouble. He prays earnestly to his God to help him out of his predicament. “God, I’m about to lose my car. Please help me. Let me win the lottery.” Lottery night comes, but sadly, Dave is not the winner. Things go from bad to worse. Without a car to get to work, Dave loses his job. Without a job, his mortgage is foreclosed on, and he loses his home. Without a home, his wife leaves him, taking the kids. After each horrible step in the mounting crisis, he pleads with God to let him win the lottery, but he never does. Finally, broke, hungry, living on the street, he tries again. “God, please, my life is a wreck. I have no car, no home, no family. Please let me win the lottery just this once so that I can turn my life around. I beg you.” Suddenly, a flash of light comes from the sky, and the voice of God echoes down from the heavens. “Dave, meet me halfway, buy a flipping ticket.”

THEY SHOULD STOCK ATM’S BETTER. I went to 4 different ones and they all said insufficient funds.

TORQUING CARS! REPORT REVEALS 76PC OF USED IMPORTS ARE DIESEL AS EMISSIONS ROW RAGES

WE know we are bringing in lots more UK imports than last year, but maybe we need to have the huge volume of diesels highlighted once again.Vehicle history and data expert Cartell.ie discloses in a new report how we’re importing diesel vehicles of all sorts in “significant numbers”.It tracked imports up to the end of September and found that the vast majority (76pc, or more than three-in-every four) were diesel.Such a high proportion of three and four-year-old diesels will lend further strength to industry claims that we are importing vehicles which are emitting more harmful gases than the brand new vehicles being sold, in reduced numbers, here.It is a vicious cycle: cheaper, older and dirtier imports are replacing more expensive, new and cleaner models. As of now, there appears to be little that anyone can do, given the current political climate. Side by side with the big number of diesels has been a sizeable increase in the number of hybrid (+193pc) and electric vehicles (+148pc) brought in.Buyers are going for either three-year-old or four-year-old vehicles as their main choices.Small-family cars top their shopping list, with larger family/fleet vehicles second.John Byrne of Cartell.ie says: “This snapshot of the Irish market shows the Irish buyer is especially keen to import a diesel vehicle, usually a three or four-yearold and often a Focus, Golf, or Qashqai - models which have been consistently popular in the domestic market.”Mr Byrne also says the rise in the numbers of electric vehicles and hybrids/ plug-ins shows “buyers of those types of vehicles can see the value of importing and also points to a growth in the market for those vehicle types”.And how long will the current level of imports continue? “Overall, we would see imports remaining strong until at least the due date for Brexit next in March 2019.” Meanwhile, when we talk of used imports, we invariably think of cars. But there are significant numbers of commercials being brought in as well.So much so that, when added to the numbers of cars, the total number of imports is now rushing towards the 100,000 mark. The thing about imports is that the numbers seem to remain constant (or increase) from month to month. For example, nearly 7,000 have been registered so far in October, which is six times the number of a seasonally low level of new-car sales. New-car registrations for the year to date are running at around 124,000. Indo Motoring

MOTORING GOSSIP...

Ford is extending production of its GT for two years such has been the demand (seven potential buyers for every car). It is believed a “small number” have been bought in Ireland, The company now plans on producing around 1,350 of the supercars. The Ford GT application window is to re-open for one month from November 1. Ford previously announced a run of just 1,000 vehicles over four years. The GT has a twin turbocharged, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, carbon fibre architecture, active aerodynamics and a 347kmh top speed. A company spokesperson told Motors: “A small number of 2018 GT models have been purchased and delivered to owners in Ireland.” The revised Mercedes C-Class (pictured) has just arrived in showrooms. There are external design changes, the latest engines and a restyled interior, as well as upgraded multimedia and infotainment layout. It comes as a saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet with two styles and equipment lines (Avantgarde and AMG). Prices begin from €37,710.

NEW 2019 FORD FOCUS ST SPIED WITH NO DISGUISE

New Ford Focus ST hot hatch due next summer before hybrid RS model appears early next decade Ford Performance’s next move will be to introduce an ST version of the all-new Focus, continuing a 16-year tradition of ST badged hot Focuses. These latest spy shots almost reveal the Focus ST’s final exterior design in full, well ahead of its planned debut early next summer. It’s our first unobscured look at Ford’s next hot hatch, following plenty of spy shots of it testing at the Nurburgring over the past six months.Introduced in 2002, the ST170 version of the first Focus performed as a cheaper understudy to the Mk1 Focus RS. It wasn’t until 2005, and the introduction of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder Focus ST based on the second-generation version of the car, that the model found its feet.Fast-forward to 2018 and the fourth-generation car, and this Focus ST looks likely to be the final Ford hot hatchback to rely solely on internal combustion power alone – the next Focus RS, due in 2020, could go hybrid. When it goes on sale late next summer, it could be priced pretty competitively – Ford has dropped the price of the Focus by a couple thousand euros across the board with the mk4 car. Whether that means Focus ST will follow, we’ll have to wait and see, 44

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BAN NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE OFFENCE: Having been involved in soccer at many levels I have sat on a number of appeals and certainly I was taken aback when I saw the ban of 8 weeks that was handed out to Colm Geaney after the punch he threw at an East Kerry player. I don’t know Colm but by all accounts this was out of character for him and the problem is that when this happens it is more often than not out of character for the aggressor. Things get out of hand and people get drawn into situations that they should certainly know better than to get involved in. And now with cameras everywhere and not just at high profile games more and more of this terrible behaviour will be seen on social media. The GAA in Kerry certainly did not help the situation by allowing so many people on the side line with 50 persons including substitutes allowed access to the dug-out area. And when a flash point happens so close it all kicks off and we have the terrible scenes we saw last Sunday – and indeed not for the first time. However what made this worse was that the player who got punched – Dara Moynihan – was standing away from the melee and therefore there is even less mitigating circumstances than if he was involved – not that that will ever excuse a mentor striking a player. The issue with the 8week ban is the inconsistency for such actions around the country with some players getting lengthy bans for lesser offences. I wonder if the player hit the referee what would he get so why was this so lenient? It is possible that the CCC used the referee’s report and did not put as much emphasis on the video evidence but that’s for those in the know to clarify. I would presume that the ban will prevent the Dingle mentor from having any access to the dressing room or to the team for a certain length of time before their next game – which of course is the County final. By right the ban should be from all GAA activities including training etc but then who would monitor this? Plus Colm should have to do some courses before he is allowed back involved with a team. There is no doubt that he will be reflecting on what he did this week and will certainly

have plenty of time to do this even if most people believe he should have much more time. The County Board are drafting in more stewards to the side-line for Sunday’s game so there will be more people on the line. And if it ‘kicks off’ between the two teams then why should these steward’s put themselves in danger? Remember the side –line is very tight and there is concrete walls and seats in that vicinity and God forbid if anyone falls the wrong way and hits his head the consequences are not worth thinking about. And of course we have seen plenty of campaigns warning people on nights out of the danger of one punch attacks. One punch in a fight on the field of play is as dangerous as one punch on the street. Away from the fight as enough has been said now. One of the issues that most sports are tackling is the abuse from the side-lines from supporters. Things are changing but not quickly enough and we all cringe with some of the stuff that is said and often by parents at underage games. And while it might not be PC to say it sometimes the mothers are worse than the fathers – and I said sometimes. Yes it’s a small minority in all sports and while not all is abusive but parents roaring instructions at players is every bit as unnecessary as roaring abuse is. And then we have the verbal tirades that officials are often subjected to. Again it is getting better and very few of us can say that we have never overstepped this line. But if we are honest if we over step this line we don’t feel great afterwards when the adrenalin has returned to normal and we reflect on our actions. I saw a post on social media that really summed this up. Two supporters were on the side line watching a game. One turned to the other and asked which one is your son? The other asked why they wanted to know this. The first supporter said so that I can call him every name under the sun, tell him how useless and how blind he is and to question his parentage. The other supporter was shocked and said you cannot say that to my son to which the first supporter said why not as you have been doing it to my son all game. My son is the referee! Enough said.

KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors season is coming to an end with only the Town Championship final versus Austin Stacks and the County League Final versus Dr Crokes to be decided. The Town Championship final is set for the weekend of November 3rd and 4th with the exact time and date to be announced. The League final will depend on how the Crokes get on this Sunday. If they prevail then they will have a Munster campaign to be taken into account. The club thanks all the squad, mentors, management and supporters for another decent season and of course to the sponsors without whom the club could not continue to survive. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 21,25,27 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e2900. The u8’s enjoyed the visit of Glen Emmets of Co Louth both on and off the field where both sides enjoyed the food in the clubhouse after the games. Both sets of players were delighted with the visit of David Moran who took time out to talk to all the players. The underage players enjoyed visits to Bowling Buddies and Sandy Feet Farm for their end of season treats. The parents enjoyed the visits as much as the young players. Halloween Party: The Halloween Party will take place at the weekend in Charlies Bar from 2pm. There will be a medal presentation for everyone in the Juvenile Academy followed by plenty of entertainment, fun and treat bags. If you like please come along in fancy dress. The Grace Moran Memorial Walk will take place in less than 3 week with proceeds going to Pieta House, Cuan Mhuire and the MS Tralee / District Branch. Sponsorship cards are available from Moran’s Foodstore in Strand Road. Donations can also be made on-line or on Sunday November 11th at 2pm with more details to follow. The club hopes to do Grace and her family proud with a large turn-out and all are invited to the clubhouse afterwards for tea or coffee. The u12 and u14 Girls end of season trip is to Cork on Saturday November with ice skating and shopping on the agenda. The u14 Girls Town League is being rescheduled.

The u15 Girls lost out in their Shield Final at the weekend in extra time. The u16 Town League will be played in the next week or two with a Blitz format. Their end of season trip to Cork is on November 18th. Bag Packing: The club has secured a bag packing day in Dunnes Stores, the Horan Centre on Saturday November 3rd. All help will be appreciated. Celebrity Mamas Sponsorship Cards: There are still some cards to be returned before the draw for the e40 vouchers for Charlie’s Bar and Bistro compliments of the North Kerry Ladies. These can be dropped into the bar or be brought to the Halloween Party on October 28th. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,12, 22 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e7,000 with the draw in the Halfway Bar. Ballymac GAA Annual General Meeting: The Annual General Meeting of Ballymacelligott GAA Club will take place on Sunday 25th November at 2pm in our Club Rooms. All fully paid up Adult members are invited to attend. Galleries on Club web site: Log on to www.ballymacgaa.com for all the photos from our Acadamy medal presentation in 2018 and also we have added a Gallery from the very successful Ballymac GAA Ladies Lunch. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 12,15,22 and 24 and the next jackpot will be e3000 with the draw this Sunday night in O’Dwyer’s Bar. The Academy has ended for the year and the club thanks the coaches Fiona Costello (u6), Sean Daly (u8) and Seamus Murphy (u10) for all their work. The Academy will return in January. Before that the club will be having a Christmas party for its youngest stars. The u12 andd u14 Juvenile Academy also came to a close for the season with an internal blitz. Despite the weather the four teams really enjoyed their final day. Club chairperson Jimmy Mulligan and Juvenile Chairperson Marie Fitzgibbon attended the Blitz where the parents provided some much needed refreshments after the games. The Seniors enjoyed a good win over Na Gaeil last Sunday in the semi-finals of the Lee Strand St Brendan’s Football Board Senior Football Championship. They led 0-07 to 0-03 at half time in tough conditions and in the end it came down to the wire with the seniors winning 2-08 to 0-13 points. They are now awaiting the Ardfert and Churchill game to see who they will play in the decider. There is still time for interested parties to apply for the Senior management position with applications to the Secretary online. All those living within the catchment area are asked to attend this important meeting. PARNELLS NEWS: Some of Kerry’s young camogie stars were in action at the Mallow Coaching Blitz organised by Riobard Lotty and his coaches. Tralee Parnells players were well able to compete with the inter -county players in advance of the 2019 u14 season. The players in action were Ailisha Daughton, Caoilinn Hickey, Lana O’Connell, Gráinne Leahy, Alice O’Connell, Hannah Stewart. Lana was the only u12 player in action and hit 3 goals for Kerry in the afternoon after a morning of coaching sessions. County Board u19 Hurling Blitz: Parnells, Crotta and the ITT were involved in a 3-way-blitz organised by Patrice Diggin. This will be repeated again this week. 20x20: The club are doing their bit to aid the campaign aiming to increase attendance, coverage and participation for women’s sport by 20% by 2020. Full details are available on-line. The club congratulates Clanmaurice on their 2-08 to 1-06 win over St Joseph’s Doora Barefield in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Club camogie championship. Tralee Parnells Autumn Academy will run for 6 weeks in the Tralee Sports Complex on Friday’s. The Awards night is set for November 9th at the Rose Hotel while the AGM will take place at 8pm on Friday November 16th. CLANMAURICE FIXTURE SET: Clanmaurice will face Crecora of Limerick in the Munster Junior Club Camogie Final at Newcastle West on this Sunday, 28 October at 2pm. MRS BROWN SAVING LIVES: One of the most unusual but probably most worthy sponsorships was announced this week when the Mrs Brown’s Boys FAI Heart Care programme was launched. With approximately two young people per week passing away in Ireland from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) expert cardiologists recommend cardiac screening. For example in Italy where screening is mandatory for any young person involved in competitive sport they have reduced the incidents of SADS by 89% over the last 25 years. UEFA have also made cardiac screening compulsory for all those participating in their competitions. So with the cost reduced by over 50% to just e30 all players in the League of Ireland set-up in Kerry from u13’s to u19’s will be screened while all the girls in the u17’s Women’s National League will also be included. The initiative is being financially supported by Brendan and Jenny O’Carroll and the FAI. NO LUCK FOR TRALEE SIDES IN THE FAI JUNIOR: It was a tough weekend for both Tralee sides in the FAI Junior Cup. St Brendan’s Park went out away

to Shannon Town while Tralee Dynamos made the shorter trip to Killorglin but were beaten by a slightly more experienced home side. Tralee Dynamos were unlucky to go down in the FAI U17 Cup losing out to Killarney Athletic 2-1. In the Schoolboys Inter League games Kerry drew 1-1 with Limerick County in the 15’s while the 13’s went down to Limerick Desmond. The John Giles Penalty Shoot Out League final also took place with Tralee Dynamos Shay Kelliher very unlucky to come up just short. The competition was won by Killarney Celtic’s Joey McCarthy. This weekend the quest for National Cup glory continues with the Park at home to Pike Rovers at u12’s and at home to Fairview Rangers in the 14’s. RUGBY NEWS: The IRFU is the latest sports organisation to launch their plans to increase female participation and have published their Women in Rugby Action Plan 2018-2023. They want to have 5000 adult players and 300 women’s and girl’s teams with rugby being played in 150 schools. There are also targets for the Women’s team regarding the World Cup, 7’s World Cup and 7’s World Series. Locally in Munster Junior League Division 3 Tralee won away at Bantry 32-13 while in Munster Women’s League Division 1 the women’s had a big win away to Fermoy. In the u16 Conference 2 Listowel/Tralee just got the better of Kanturk 14-13. This weekend in the Munster u14’s Tralee take on Killorglin and in u16 Conference 2 Listowel / Tralee go to Castleisland. In the Girls u16 Munster Conference B Listowel / Tralee are at home to Abbeyfeale. SWIMMERS RECEIVE THEIR AWARDS FOR WORLD SERIES: The Tralee Bay Swimming Club were celebrating out of the water with their end of series Awards. The winners following a very competitive series of swims were: Swimmer of the Year -Clare Neenan, Winter Swimmer of the Year – Helena Creagh, Best Newcomer – Bairbre Reen, Group A – Maura Hayes, Rose Browne, James Slade, Group B – Thomas Brosnan, Noel Hilliard, Mairead Fox, Group C – Morna O’Halloran, Sharon Cahill and Noel Ryan. Next up for the swimmers is the Turkey Series as the countdown to one of the most eagerly awaited swims gets underway – the Christmas Day Swim. KINGDOM GREYHOUND NEWS: The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium has won the Tourism Award at the Kerryman newspaper sponsored business awards in Ballygarry House. Operations Director Declan Dowling said that, “After a lengthy application and interview process the kingdom Greyhound stadium had been shortlisted along with the Grand Hotel Killarney and Dingle Safari and it was a fantastic achievement for the stadium to be

chosen as the winner”. On the track this weekend there is racing on Friday from 7.42pm where the highlight is a fundraiser for Feale Rangers GAA with lots of spot prizes and music after racing, and on Sunday from 6.35pm. There is no racing on Saturday night. The track is currently taking entries for the KGOBA sponsored A6 confined 525 yards starting on November 3rd, the Red Mills unraced bitch stake starting on Friday November 9th and the Kingdom Stadium Hurdle for greyhounds who must qualify over hurdles starting on Friday December 7th. All entries are to go to the Racing Office on 061 448057. COURSING NEWS: The coursing season continued last weekend with the action in Abbeydorney. All eyes were on what dogs would make an impact at the National meeting in Powerscourt. Picture House and Please Marry Me impressed in the Trial Stakes. Headleys Alonso won the Bill McCarthy Memorial Cup while the Scollard Memorial Cup went to Cuine Dusty. Mountain Queen claimed the Working Members Stake. The Island Cup is the feature of the three day Castlelisland meeting next weekend with the action getting underway on Saturday at 11am. WARRIORS MAKE IT ONE FROM ONE ON THE NEW FLOOR: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 90-81 Griffith College Swords Thunder: The new timber floor looked great at the Warriors continued their good form making it three wins from three. This was their first win at home, having gone down to Keanes in their first game. This was another good team performance but Jordan Evans and Kieran Donaghy stood out with the Star taking 22 rebounds. The Warriors started well and were 7-0 up but the visitors fought back and by the end of the first ten minutes there was only a basket between them with Swords leading 20-18. A number of three pointers were the highlight of the second quarter with Darren O’Sullivan’s long range buzzer beater bringing the crowd to their feet and giving the Warrors a 40-36 lead at the half. The game stayed tight and the sides were level at 53 each midway through the third quarter but then Donaghy at both ends, Quigley, Evans and O’Sullivan hit hot streaks and by the end of the thirs quarter the Warriors led by 9 points 64-55. O’Sullivan and three scores in a row from Evans kept the home side in the driving seat and they ran out winners by the same margin 90-81. Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell said that this was a big win for the Tralee side. “It was important to keep the run going and great to win in front of another packed Sports Complex. It sets the team up nicely for a huge National Cup game away to defending champions Black Amber Templeogue. The game, in Dublin, tips off in Inchicore this Saturday night at 8pm.”

Friday 26th October 2018
