WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... NEW BOOK LIFTS THE LID ON KERRY BRAVEHEARTS

‘Kerry Bravehearts’, a new book written by award winning Kerry journalist and photographer Con Dennehy, which will be launched in Killarney on Sunday November 27th, looks deep into the heart and soul of 42 inspirational Kerry people who have overcome, and in many cases continue to overcome adversity in their own personal life. Men, women and children from all over Kerry are featured in the book which brings readers on a journey that is physical, emotional and spiritual. “This book invites each of us to put ourselves in another’s shoes, to see and feel the existence of pain, bravery, love, community and courage. It is a book brought to you by ordinary people who have, and continue to live, extraordinary lives,” said Currow native, Con Dennehy. Among those featured in the book are Margaret Curran (Waterville), Kathleen Poff (Brosna), Damien O’Carroll (Listowel), Alanna Diggin (Tralee), Adrian O’Connor (Cloghane), Robert Barry (Kilflynn), Christy Leahy (Tralee) and Sharon Roche (Tralee). “Each person featured in the book has battled with a range of life changing traumas such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, depression, brain injury, loss of limbs, strokes, epilepsy, suicide, rare growth disorders and other medical issues. The book features the incredible and honest accounts of cancer by former Kerry Rose Julett Culloty from Kilcummin and Tralee fashion icon Orlagh Winters. Tralee farmer Tommy Moynihan recounts a horrific farm accident that resulted in the loss of his left hand while Ted Moynihan recalls his fascinating journey with the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Anthony Morris from Killarney details his traumatic battle with Lyme disease while Rathmore native David Saunders tells his inspiring story that saw him lose a leg to cancer but fight back to become an Irish international amputee soccer star. It’s a book that will bring readers through varying emotions from tears to laughter and from sadness to elation.” The book, published by Roisin Publications, will be launched in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney on Sunday November 27th at 4pm by Radio Kerry presenter and journalist Deirdre Walsh. For Media information contact Con Dennehy 0872326282.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TONY CHRISTIE LOOKS FORWARD TO PLAYING THE KINGDOM.

Tony Christie is without doubt one of those great voices of a different era. It was a time when show business personalities needed to be big singers, and they didn’t come much bigger than Tom Jones, Elvis, Englebert and Tony Christie. Chris of the Tralee Advertiser caught up with the living legend this week in an exclusive for Tralee Advertiser. Chris, So Tony, how did you get to hear about the INEC? Tony, I was touring with Tom Jones in Germany and he mentioned Killarney. We both play golf together and he also mentioned the courses and tremendous reception he got from the Kerry audience. My son Sean manages me and he and Mark Leen are friends, so they set up the Cork and Kerry shows between them as part of this tour. Chis. Will you be bringing a band? Tony. Yes we have ten on stage with the show, not including me. Two fabulous female singers, Drums, Keys, Guitars, Piano and of course our amazing horn section. Chris. Is this a new show or will you be including the big hits from your 50 year career? Tony. Well we have a new album out called 50 Golden Greats, which showcases all of the obvious ones, Las Vegas, Amarillo, Reno, Solitaire, I Did What I Did for Maria etc, we will be doing all of those next

Friday Night and we will include some new material also. Chris, How is the tour going? Tony. Unbelievable really, we are getting a tremendous reception from people all over Europe. We play a full show and then many people are wanting photos and autographs afterwards, a whole new generation are hearing the songs which is quite humbling. Chris, Was the Peter Kay release of your song for Comic Relief a turning point? Tony. Absolutely, suddenly i was back at Number 1 in the charts across Europe and getting requests to perform all over the world. We played Glastonbury, Germany and even Amarillo Texas for their big festival. Chris, Are you looking forward to touring Ireland? Tony. Yes, i have Irish grandparents and my real name is Anthony Fitzgerald. In fact Mark Leen informed me that another Anthony Fitzgerald From Tralee will be at the show. There are a few Irish songs in the set. We have shows in Dundalk, Cork and Belfast, but Killarney is selling 3 times more than anywhere else, so were really looking forward to the INEC show. Chris. What can fans expect from the performance? Tony. Well we have your Mark opening for us and he is quite a capable entertainer. He will perform a set from the 70’s era. I believe. We normally begin after the support and we will play many of the hits and give people a taste of the big band sound which was so common back then. The audience reactions have been amazing. They are spontaneously joining in on songs

and many people wind up dancing in the aisles. People tell me how they met and loved my songs all those years ago. Chris. Will this become a regular trip to Ireland? Tony, I Don’t think so, it takes a lot to plan a tour like this, we have large tour coaches, Backline and an instrument truck, this is a celebration of 50 years so this will be a one off show. Chris, Will you play Golf while you are here? Tony Well I hope to. Chris. Finally, you received many awards in your career, which one means the most? Tony. Well, Neil Sedaka wrote Amarillo but Our version was the big hit around the world, i guess when it was voted most popular British song of the 20th Century in 2000. That was special, the award was presented on stage at a packed Royal Albert Hall. Neil Flew over and was also there that night, that would be an award that stands out. Tony Christie plays the INEC in Friday Nov 18th and tickets are available at the box office 064-6671555 or www.inec.ie

FITZGERALD STADIUM MAKES 2023 RUGBY WORLD SHORTLIST

Seanad Leas-Cathaoirleach and Fine Gael Kerry Senator, Paul Coghlan, has welcomed the inclusion of Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney as one of the IRFU’s proposed stadiums for the 2023 Rugby World Cup bid. Speaking on the Order of Business in the Seanad this week , Senator Coghlan said: “I am delighted that Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney has been listed as one of the IRFU’s proposed stadiums for the 2023 Rugby World Cup bid. “The IRFU has put a tremendous amount of work into the 2023 bid, and the selection of Fitzgerald Stadium is obviously a good move. “There is currently a proposal to increase the capacity of the stadium from 43,000 to 50,000, and I have no doubt that it will serve as an exceptional facility for rugby fans visiting from around the globe. “Fitzgerald Stadium has rightly been named as the most picturesque stadium in the country and if we are successful in bringing the World Cup to Ireland, it will showcase all that Kerry and the country have to offer on the world stage. “The bid to host Rugby World Cup 2023 is an all-island effort, with both the Irish Government and the Northern Ireland Executive working hand in hand to bring this prestigious tournament here. “For years, we have punched above our weight when playing abroad and now it’s time to show the world what we have to offer, not only in sporting terms, but in terms of hospitality and the world famous Irish welcome. Through the inclusion of Fitzgerald Stadium in the bid, Kerry looks forward to playing its part in that.” 16

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... LISTOWEL ARMS HOTEL CELEBRATES TWENTY YEARS IN BUSINESS AT 2016 LISTOWEL FOOD FAIR

The O’Callaghan family celebrated twenty years in business at the Listowel Arms Hotel on Sunday as part of the 2016 Listowel Food Fair festivities. The O’Callaghan family welcomed the community of Listowel to join them for a celebratory afternoon reception with gourmet canapés and Jazz music. Speaking about the family history with the Listowel Arms Hotel Asya O’Callaghan said: “I am honored to have joined the O’Callaghan family of talented and hard working people. The O’ Callaghans are the seventh family in the history of the Listowel Arms Hotel which has always been run by families and played an important role in the Listowel community for over two hundred years now.The Listowel Arms Hotel is often described in reviews as very homely and welcoming and we are so proud to have a fantastic team of staff who are always complimented. Some of them such as Eileen Lynch and Mary Julian have joined the team over thirty years ago in The Cliff House Hotel in Ballybunion founded by Bernard and Josie O’Callaghan. Bridie O’ Carrol and Tom Johnes have been with the O’ Callaghans for all of the twenty Images Courtesy of Don MacMonagle / MacMonagle years.Coming from a big city of Moscow where people hardly know each Photography other’s neighbors’, I truly appreciate the close and friendly community of Listowel. We had a wonderful day celebrating the milestone with family and friends and thank you to all for sharing it with us. ” Great history has occurred at the Listowel Arms Hotel as demonstrated by a plaque on the wall hinting at the eventful history of the famous hotel. Previous famous visitors to the hotel include the Liberator, Daniel O’Connell and Charles Stewart Parnell . The Victorian writer W. M. Thackeray recommended the place in 1842 and Richard Colt-Hoare, in 1865 shared his fondness of the historic Listowel Arms Hotel describing the hotel as ‘one of the best in Ireland’. Over a hundred years later and the O’Callaghan family are now celebrating twenty years in Irish hospitality in the North Kerry town long famed for its literary geniuses and culinary delights.Set in the square of Listowel, the Listowel Arms Hotel is a three star boutique hotel with a proud tradition of fine food and quality service. The Listowel Arms, being the only hotel in Listowel, is very much “the hotel” in this buzzing Kerry town. The hotel is located right in the centre of this heritage town, which also known as the “Literary Capital of Ireland” and it certainly plays a great role in the community life in this part of North Kerry. Listowel is home to many annual festivals: Writers’ Week in June, the Listowel Races in September and the Listowel Food Fair in November. Listowel came alive this past week for the 2016 Listowel Food Fair -Ireland’s longest running food festival which celebrated it’s 22nd consecutive fair this year from November 10th -14th.

THE GOLDEN TOILET

Dugly goes out drinking one night and gets blackout drunk. He wakes up the next morning to find that he has lost his credit card. He needs to get it back but he got so drunk he doesn’t remember which bar he ended up at. The only thing he remembers is that the bar had a golden toilet. He walks into down and goes into one bar and asked the bartender, “Excuse me, this is a weird question, but do you happen to have a golden toilet here?” “A golden toilet? I don’t think so,” the bartender said, giving him a strange look. The man walked into another bar,”Excuse me, you don’t happen to have a golden toilet here, do you?” said Dugly. “A golden toilet, huh? Don’t be ridiculous.” This continues all day until finally Dugly walks into a bar all the way on the other side of town. He asks the bartender: “Excuse me, I know this is going to sound strange, but do you have a golden toilet here? I got really drunk last night and left my credit card at a bar with a golden toilet.” The bartender smiles, turns around and yells, “Hey Bob, I think we found the guy who took a dump in your tuba!” 22

BON JOVI

Bill willingly allowed Lonnie to have the right to name their little girl. Bill, of course named both the boys. Blake and Bryan. After some long contemplating Lonnie decided to name her baby girl Love. Bill thought this seemed a bit odd of a name, but didn’t want to cause a commotion over it. He loved Lonnie, his two boys and his baby girl no matter she was named. Now Love didn’t think anything of her name until she started elementary school. The higher the grade the more teasing she received. By the time she finished 8th grade, Love started to despise her own name. Then on to 9th grade, 10th grade and 11th grade. Her anger grew with the teasing she received. Upon graduation from the 12th grade, Love had enough. She knew what she had to do. Bill and Lonnie had planned a celebrated dinner with Love later that night. Bill was at home waiting for Lonnie to return from shopping that evening as Love walked in the door. Without saying a word Love strode past Bill and headed straight for her room. Bill was a bit surprised by this. None the less he simply brushed it off and continued to finish reading his newspaper. No less than 2 minutes later Love walks out of her room with a gun in hand and tears in her eyes. She points it straight at Bill. Shoots him in the chest screaming how it was unfair of him giving her such a horrible name. She then turns to herself and shoots herself in the shoulder . Lonnie just returning home from the store walks in seeing the blood and sees her husband and daughter, injured on the ground, falls to her knees crying. She hears mumbling coming from Bill’s mouth. She crawls over as Bill tries speaking. “What is it honey. What happened here?” she asks. Bill looks into Lonnie’s eyes and whispers. “Shot though the heart, and you’re to blame. You gave Love a bad name.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... “KEEP THE WOLVES FROM THE DOOR THIS CHRISTMAS”

With Christmas being just around the corner, an exciting and wonderful time for families, but for many it can be a time of stress and financial strain. Speaking to Chapter 23 Credit Unions Marketing Committee spokesperson Suzanne Ennis “Our keep the wolves from the door Christmas survival guide offers top tips for Christmas shopping from setting price limits on presents or Kris Kringle, to setting a realistic Christmas budget. MABS is a government funded service but operate independently of government departments, the HSE, credit unions, banks, etc. This is a very important as we offer a free, independent and confidential service to those who approach us seeking financial and budgeting advice. It’s been a busy year for MABS, in Kerry this year we have seen an increase in supports for those who are over-indebted and struggling to meet repayments as they fall due. As an example for those in arrears with their home loan repayments and facing possible loss of the family home we now have a free, confidential and independent MABS Dedicated Mortgage Arrears Service. There are a number of other supports available through MABS to assist those who are in debt, which they cannot afford to meet repayments on, so the message is to contact MABS if you cannot resolve the financial problem directly with your lender” he concluded. Copies of the guide are available at your credit union and with MABS and in local shops and businesses throughout your community.

Teeth in a Day (All on 4) is a proven, revolutionary dental treatment for a patient that is missing all their natural teeth and who is tired of wearing an ill fitting and often sore denture. While there are many options available to people who struggle with an ill-fitting denture, our ‘Teeth in a Day’ (Implant Supported Bridges) offer you the chance to throw your denture away for good and feel the benefits of never having to worry about a denture again. They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’

Teeth in a Day

How it works

At your free consultation, we’ll take the time to listen to you, address your concerns and questions and fully explain the procedure and the options available to you. If you decide to proceed, a full clinical examination will be carried out by Dr. Colm O’Loghlen including X rays and 3D CT scanning. We are one of only a few clinics in Ireland with a CT scanner on site. This minimises patient inconvenience and allows for the most advanced analysis of your teeth and needs. The full implant procedure is carried out in one day. The implants are placed in the morning and you leave that afternoon with fully fixed teeth having thrown your denture in the bin!

Nervous?

If you’re nervous, no problem, the procedure is pain free, and some of our patients elect to have a IV sedation or a mild oral sedative to complete the treatment.

LOCAL – Have all your treatment completed in Tralee with Dr Colm O’Loghlen. SAFER – With our own CT Scanning equipment, digitally planning your procedure results in safer implant placement. KINDER – Dr Colm O’Loghlen’s experience, training and technology investment, leads to quicker surgery, reduced swelling and improved recovery time.

We’ve just been honored to be announced as the only accredited All-on-4 implant provider in Kerry and Cork. We’ve been recognised due to Dr O’Loghlens extensive experience.

Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Inventor of the Dental Implant.

Testimonials “I am so happy. Colm really has changed my life” “I had sedation – the time did fly! I had 4 implants in my upper jaw. I didn’t feel them going in, and it didn’t hurt at all” “My enjoyment of food – the flavour and the texture is just so much better” “I am so thrilled to show off my teeth – and all my friends and family can see why I went for this option. No way I’d go back. No regrets.”

This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens HAIRCARE TIPS!

• We all want our hair to look good, healthy and taken care of. My hair has been through the ringer, I’ve been several different colours from ‘Blue Black’ to ‘Red’ to ‘Bleach Blonde’, I’ve learnt some lessons the hard way and I’ve used a lot of products etc. So here are a few of my top haircare tips! •

DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR EVERYDAY: Hair is a fiber, Think of a wool fiber: The more you wash it, the worse it’s going to look. There’s no need to wash your hair every day either. The longer, thicker, curlier, and more processed your hair, the longer it can go between washes. This is because the oils from the scalp do not travel down the hair shaft as quickly, so the hair tends to be dry and requires less frequent shampooing.Even most unprocessed, short, thin, straight hair can skip a day. Daily shampooing is only necessary if oil production on the scalp is high. I usually wash mine 3 times a week. USE HEAT PROTECTORS: We all use heat on our hair, some of us more than others. Heat can be very damaging to the hair and cause it to dry out. That’s why it is very important to use heat protector sprays before styling our locks! They condition the hair & protect against any potential damage. NO TO BOX DYES: As someone who changes her hair colour a lot, I know how tempting it is to just buy a box dye instead of going to a hair salon to get your hair done. I’ve done it. I used box dye firstly to dye my hair ‘Blue Black’, black hair with a slight blue shine. I had no problems until I decided I wanted to go lighter, it took twice the amount of time and money to lighten my hair because I had used the box

dye and the colour was embedded in my hair! Did I learn? No. Last year I dip-dyed my hair in the hair salon so that the ends were blonde, this was all well and good until, right before my summer holiday, I put a pink box dye over the blonde, and yeah the colour turned out well, but my hair was so dead and dry from the dye that I ended up having to chop my lovely long hair up to my shoulders, AND I’M STILL GROWING IT! Lesson learned. Leave it to the professionals Ladies! USE HIGH QUALITY SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER: Detergent shampoos have an adverse effect on your hair – leaving it dry and lifeless - like a dried-out leaf. Choose a high quality, detergent free shampoo and a suitable conditioner for your particular hair type. Look out for protein rich products, with molecule breakdown small enough to penetrate under the cuticle to the cortex. This will help to strengthen your hair and add more body.

EYESHADOW TO SUIT YOU!

I happen to be absolutely obsessed with eyeshadows, literally. I have countless palettes, trios, quads and singles. There happen to be some colours that work better on certain eye colours, they compliment them and make your eye colour pop! As it’s coming up to Christmas, we all want to look our best, so here’s what eyeshadow suits your eye colour best!

BLUE EYES

Blue is a naturally cool tone, so warmer shades tend to set this iris color ablaze. • • •

• •

Purple Shades Orange Shades Neutral Smoky Eye: Black smoky eyes might be a classic, but they tend to overshadow blue eyes rather than enhance them. Soften your look with a neutral palette of rich browns, golds, and light pinks instead. Bronze, Gold & Copper Shades. Beige eye pencil rather than black: Using a highlighter on the inside lower lash line is the oldest trick in the book for making eyes appear bigger. But women with blue

eyes should skip white highlighters. They tend to look unnatural and kind of dirty, instead, choose a soft, beige pencil that will brighten eyes natural DON’T: • BLUE EYESHADOW: Do not wear blue eye shadow if you have blue eyes - it’ll kill your natural eye colour.

BROWN EYES

Women with brown eyes have the widest range of options when it comes to choosing shadow. The reason: Brown is a neutral, and it doesn’t tend to compete with colors in the same way that other eye hues do. • Bronze shades • Peach shades • Navy shades • Teal shades • Purple shades • Green shades You really can use any colour with brown eyes, so if you’re lucky enough to have them, or you have coloured contacts like me, then go wild!

GREEN EYES

The pros all point to some variation of purple as looking the most beautiful on green eyes. • Sepia shades • Purple shades • Pink shades • Rustic shades Again, like with the blue eyes, steer away from green shadows as they will take away from your eyes.

HAZEL EYES

Hazel eyes contain a range of tones; they’re somewhere between green and brown and often have flecks of gold and grey that grant them a natural radiance. Because of their innate spectrum of colours, you can play up certain aspects of hazel eyes to completely transform their hue. • Grey shades • Dusty pink shades • Burgundy shades • Deep purple shades • Brown shades Meanwhile, avoid golds that are too pale they tend to wash out the eye colour.

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty. Stay Gorge,

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! So it is 5 weeks until Christmas… 5… WEEKS! And we all know Christmas is the biggest party season of them all so naturally we all want to look unreal, not going to sugar coat it. The problem is that sometimes we just write off our good eating and exercise habits in early December and then by the time it comes to Christmas we feel more like plum puddings than sugar plums! So here are a few quick tips on how to not totally lose the run of yourself between here and the week of Christmas…

1. HYDRATE – Keep that water intake high to stay hydrated and flush out any extra toxins lingering. Try to get at LEAST 2 litres a day. There is no point wasting calories on high sugar drinks this time of year. 2. MOVE MORE – Any bit of extra movement these next few weeks is going to benefit that party dress or suit. Take the stairs, walk to work if it’s not lashing, do a little extra cardio at the gym, every little bit helps! 3. EAT SMART – If you know there’s a Christmas party on or a night out with drinks, on that day make smart choices in the morning and afternoon. Get a high protein and fat breakfast into you and just generally eat well early in the day to make sure you can enjoy your night without feeling guilt. 4. NO GUILT – which leads me to my next point. If you do break out a little, no point beating yourself up about it. NO. Food guilt is the worst possible thing. Just move on. We’re human, we’re all allowed to have a treat sometimes. 5. I’LL WAIT TIL JANUARY – DO NOT. I REPEAT. DO NOT. Say those words. Why wait? If you’re going to create an excuse now you’re going to create one then too.

Well it is that time of year where we start looking at Christmas time, ...yes its only November but it is now time to start planning to avoid getting stressed out and take a little of the hassle we all feel from time to time in the lead up .. Below I have put together a few advance tips , in no particular order , that make your “Christmas Week” even more enjoyable . Remember a good plan makes it smooth and easy so here is mine!

1. Start by deciding how many you are cooking for and what will the dishes on the day be. 2. Write your dishes down with notes about ingredients and recipes. 3. By now you should be pre-booking your turkey and ham ,goose or duck. 4. Start buying frozen and canned goods now. 5. At the start of December, start buying your Christmas alcohol , mixers and minerals and dried goods, (ie Foodstuff that wont go off !) 6. By the second week of December you can start making any dishes that can be frozen till Christmas Eve 7. Have your ingredients written down and your time scale of buying them.

8. Remember , a little each week takes the stress out of running around Christmas week 9. Batteries, Batteries, Batteries!!! 10. Take all frozen food out Christmas evemorning and leave in the fridge. 11. Cook dishes you are comfortable with.... don’t try dishes you haven’t done before! 12. And most of all... enjoy yourself

We will start with some beautiful Christmas dishes next week

Microneedling may also be combined with a topical treatment, like PRP (platelet rich plasma) or another vitarnin-rich serum. TORQUING CARS! 180,000 OWNERS COULD GAIN FROM EARLY NCT TEST

Around 180,000 cars are due their 10th anniversary NCT next year as their owners have the opportunity to get a final two-year cert. Lots of owners have been advised to book a test as soon as possible so they can get a two-year, as opposed to one-year, NCT cert. The critical thing for those cars approaching their 10th birthday is to get them to the test centre well in advance of the critical date. You have to have booked and taken a test 90 days in advance of the ‘birthday’ to benefit. If you do so, you will get a cert for two years instead of one. As you know, cars of 10 years and older have to be tested every year as opposed to every two for younger models. So, by arranging to test 90 days before the 10th anniversary of registration you benefit from the two-year cert one last time. It could mean a decent saving on test and re-test fees as well as the bother of having to pay two NCT visits where one would have been sufficient. The NCT fee for a full test is €55 and a re-test costs €28. Going this month or next should also mean it will easier to book a test rather than in the busy first quarter of the new year. FIRST ELECTRIC JAGUAR I-PACE SUV DUE BY 2018

The first electric Jaguar, the I-Pace, could be on sale in Ireland in a little over a year, The production car, a rival to Tesla’s Model X, will be revealed later next year and will be ready to go on sale here in early 2018. The I-Pace concept version (pictured), on which the new car will be based is revealed this week - and is making its official debut at the Los Angeles motor show. It is a highperformance electric SUV prototype with an electric motor on each axle (so it is all-wheel drive), a 90kWh battery and seating for five. It will have a range of more than 500km on one charge, according to Jaguar. A 50kW direct current (DC) charging point can boost the battery to 80pc in 90 minutes and fully charge it in slightly more than two hours via a socket in the front wing. Each electric motor produces the equivalent of 197bhp - making a total output of 395bhp. And Jaguar’s claimed 0-100kmh time for the car is around four seconds. The great thing about electric power is that it gives an immediate response so you get massive lift-off and the sort of acceleration you’d normally only get from high-powered supercars. The twin-electric motors also generate a whopping 700Nm of torque (pulling power) - which is the same as the SVR version of the crackling F-TYPE sports car. They say they have torn up the rule book with this as part of the revolution that has taken the marque from turning out classic saloons and sports cars to making SUVs and electric vehicles. And they promise it will look, and drive, different to anything else on the road. The electric motors and 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack were designed in-house by Jaguar Land Rover. Inside the I-Pace, we are promised a radical, new-look cabin, materials and design as well as two touchscreens. The company says inside and out mark a profound change in nearly every traditional Jaguar ingredient.

RICHARD HAMMOND INTERVIEW: ‘WE’VE GOT TO MAKE THE GRAND TOUR GOOD OR THEY’LL TORCH US’

It’s like coming out of the Army, coming out of the BBC after all those years,” says Richard Hammond. The former Top Gearpresenter, who until last year had been with the motoring show since 2002, is sitting in a pub in west London, taking the occasional drag on a vape cigarette and looking demob happy. We’re here to talk about the much-anticipated return of 46-year-old Hammond and his fellow conflict veterans Jeremy Clarkson, 56, and James May, 53, in their new show, The Grand Tour, which is released this Friday on streaming service Amazon Prime, at a time still yet to be announced. Before The Grand Tour could even get on the road, however, there was a battle royal with the BBC’s lawyers about what the three could and couldn’t take with them from the old Top Gear. The BBC owns the show,” says Hammond. “But ultimately, I own the copyright on me, I’m my own intellectual property, as are James and Jeremy. No lawyer can argue that I can’t be short any more because I am.” Hammond’s height was the butt of many a Top Gear joke. Does it annoy him being teased about it? “It used to, it doesn’t now. The truth is I’m not actually tremendously short (he’s 5ft 7in), the other two are bloody tall. The old Top Gear, of course, effectively ended when Clarkson was suspended after a dust-up with a producer about his failure to ensure a hot steak was waiting after a day’s filming (instead he was offered a cold meat platter). Clarkson was later sacked by the BBC, despite a million-strong petition calling for him to keep his job.But did it all happen because the Beeb failed to look after its most valuable commodity? Top Gear was worth more than £50m a year to the Corporation in global sales. They could have had a chef standing by to cook the trio whatever they wanted at any hour of the night or day, couldn’t they? “But they didn’t,” he says, emphatically, “and now we’re doing this.”The Grand Tour is a new “cars and travel” show, complete with a studio tent pitched in a new exotic location for each hour-long episode, starting in the California desert. The opener will feature hundreds of cars, thousands of people, three celebrity guests and a new in-house test driver. It has been preceded by a glamorous and expensive-looking trailer. The opening sequence of the show alone is said to have cost £2.5m.Most important, of course, will be the chemistry between the hosts. Theirs is an odd kind of treble act. They regularly profess to hate one another, but Hammond’s book On the Edge (co-written by his wife Mindy), about his near-fatal crash in a 300mph dragster in September 2006, reveals the depth of their friendship. “We’re not soppy but we spend a ton of time in each other’s company,” says Hammond. “The amount of times we’re asked, ‘Where do you get together after work?’ – well, there isn’t any time outside of work. The only time I’d have available outside of work would be if I slept with them.” The Grand Tour is available on Amazon Prime from Friday (daily telegraph)

Answer You can only apply to reserve a vehicle registration number on or after 1 November of the year before you intend to bring the vehicle into use. In other words, to use the number in 2017 you can only apply to reserve a number from 1 November 2016 until Revenue’s close of business at the end of 2017. An application received prior to 1 November 2016 will be returned un-processed. The number you reserve must be in the normal format and must correspond with the licensing authority area where you normally reside. It must also correspond with the year and half year in which the vehicle is to be first brought into use. For example, 172-D-111 may only be reserved by someone living in Dublin for a vehicle intended to be brought into use in the second half of 2017. The registered owner of the vehicle on which the registration number is to be displayed must be the person in whose name the number was reserved. All registration numbers are available for reservation, with the exception of the first number of each half year issued in the following cities Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford. These numbers are, for example, 171-C-1, 172-C-1, 171-L-1, 172-L-1. They are reserved for the Mayor or Lord Mayor of each of these cities and are not available for reservation by anyone else. A reserved registration number can only be assigned to a vehicle when it has been reached in the normal sequence. It may not be displayed on a vehicle before it has been formally assigned by Revenue, following the presentation and acceptance of a completed declaration for registration. The fee to reserve a vehicle registration number is €1,000 and should be submitted with the application. The cheque, bank draft or postal order should be made payable to the Collector, Customs and Excise. You apply on Form VRT15A to the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, Registration Section, Central Vehicle Office, Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES There is a long way to go but for now we can be very happy the Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium is on the list of proposed hosts stadiums. The Stadium committee had two visits from the IRFU and has agreed to a series of up-grades, many of which were underway any way. And if the bid is successful it will be a bonanza for the whole county, not just during the 2023 World Cup but for years before and after it.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TOUGH WEEK FOR THE WARRIORS ON AND OFF COURT: Off the Court: The news that Irish TV have entered examinership was disappointing to hear. Obviously it comes as a concern to the Warriors as Irish TV are the club’s main sponsors. Running a club taking part in national competition week in week out is an expensive business, in all sports. Add in the fact that in SuperLeague basketball players from outside the country need to be brought in along with the coach. Of course there are ways of raising monies on an on-going basis and the large home crowds will help generate income. But a major sponsor is vital and it was great to see Irish TV backing the Warriors. The hope is that the television company can find the new investors and that the sponsorship deal can be seen out to its conclusion. However speaking to Warriors Chairman Terry O’Brien he was also concerned about the workers in Irish TV. “While we have just heard the news and its early stages yet we home things will work out. But we also think of the staff at Irish TV, whose Munster headquarters are in Tralee, who will be concerned about their futures, especially at this time of the year, coming up to Christmas.” On Court: Killester 83-80 Warriors: Tralee Warriors brave efforts just fell short in Clontarf last Saturday night, losing out narrowly to a Jermaine Turner inspired Killester outfit by three points The Tralee side had to play without Dusan Bogdanovic and Darragh O’Hanlon who are injured and who were regular starters when fit. The Warriors were behind for long periods but a very spirited fight back nearly saw them get across the line. They were behind by just a point at the end of the first quarter 22-21. Donaghy and Ryan Leonard hit big three’s in the second quarter but by the half Warriors were down by 5 46-41. Into the third quarter and the home side got into their stride with a swift and efficient transition and they had opened a big gap by the end of the third quarter – leading 71-55. However from here Trae Pemberton, Kieran Donaghy and Goran Pantovic’s showed their class and they started the comeback. This led to the Warriors taking the lead with just over a minute to go. But the home side got the lead back with just 12 seconds to go. Pemberton then just missed a big three pointer that came off the rim and the Warriors went down despite a great battle. Top Scorers, Warriors, T Pemberton (30), K Donaghy (14), G Pantovic (13), Killester J Turner (31), P Sullivan (17), C Nihill (10). The Warriors are at home to Eanna from Dublin this Saturday night at 8pm in round 7 of the SuperLeague. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: The St. Brendan’s Boys and Girls U10s hosted the Ballybunion Wildcats in a very entertaining and enjoyable evening of basketball in

Moyderwell last Friday. First up were the Boys under their coach Joanne Walsh who took on the visitors in a very good contest with a great display of skills on show. In a very even contest both sides showed good defense and offence throughout with some great scores from each side. Next up were the Girls with coaches Deirdre Hartnett and Denis Sugrue who took on their North Kerry rivals. The game was highly entertaining with St. Brendan’s dominating and showing some great defence and fast breaks leading to a number of excellent scores. Ballybunion showed great courage and determination to battle away to the finish. Well done to everyone involved in what was a great advertisement for the underage structures in the club and the level of talent and skill that exists in both sets of teams. THE OVAL BALL: RUGBY CUP COME TO KERRY – HOPEFULLY!

This time next year fingers in the rugby and wider community will be tightly crossed as the announcement for the next Rugby World Cup, in 2023, will be due. Following the announcement this week the bidding process is now down to Ireland, France and South Africa. Looking at the other two countries and France hosted the games 2007 so will they be given a second World Cup within 10 years? And there are the security concerns. But from the organisers point of view France could host the games straight away as the stadiums and infrastructure is all there and they hosted the Euro’s with no terrorist incidents. South Africa is probably the spiritual home of the Rugby World Cup but at present rugby there is in turmoil with disagreement between the Government and the authorities over cultural representation on the Springboks team. Ireland has put together a great bid to date – make sure you see the Liam Neeson voiced video – and has big names backing it including both our own and the North’s Governments. Also listening to the radio in the build-up to the weekends All Blacks game it was said that Ireland supported New Zealand in their last bid so they will be expected to support our bid.

Friday 18th November 2016

Staying with Rugby and it was a proud day for all in the Tralee and rugby club circles when Ultan Dillane made his first start for Ireland, in the game against Canada. It was a dream day for the Connacht player as he scored a try and was named Man of the Match. At the time of writing there was no team named for this weekend’s All Black’s game but while Dillane will certainly be on the bench there is speculation that he could be in line for a start. Locally in u18’s Girls A Conference the TraleeListowel combination defeated Abbeyfeale while in the u16’s Tralee just lost out to Kanturk 24-22. ON THE BIKE: CYCLOCROSS COMES TO KILLARNEY: A number of Tralee riders will be heading for Killarney this Saturday morning for the penultimate round of the Munster Cyclocross League. The course is just behind the An Oige Hostel in Aghadoe and two Killarney riders are vying for the top spot. Matt Slattery (Strata3/ Velo Revolution) and Richard Maes (Killarney CC) are battling it out at the top of the League table. At the latest round in Cork Tralee Manor West’s Shane O’Brien was 7th in the B race. MICHAEL’S ON BOARD: Michael Mannix the new Treasurer: Congratulations to Michael Mannix who has been elected Treasurer of Cycling Ireland. Michael has a long association with cycling in Tralee going back to his time as manager of the Earl of Desmond. He will be responsible for the financial matters of the association that looks after around 28,000 members. Michael will be joining the board at their next meeting which is expected to be in the next month. AT THE DOGS: ONLY ONE NIGHT THIS WEEK: There is only night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this weekend with Friday the only night. There is no racing this Saturday night. On Friday night there is a benefit night for the Tarbert GAA club with the A6 Buster Final the feature race. There will also be the first rounds of the Redmills Unraced Bitch Stake, the semi-finals of the Rockchapel/Meelin GAA A8 Buster Stake and the semi-finals of the Presentation School A5 525 yards. Entries are also been taken for the Kingdom Derby which starts on Friday December 2nd. THE KING IS THE KING IN COURSING: Domain King was the toast of the Listowel Coursing meeting winning the John Prendeville Cup. The Derby Trial Stake provided a surprise winner in Ever So Magic while Dick’s Bimbo won the Oaks Trial Stake. Bower Judy landed a sizable gamble to win the Jet Carroll All Age Bitch Stake while the ‘Lone’ name produced two winners – Lone Eagle in the Jackie Hegarty Cup and Lone Stripe taking the Maurice Cahill Cup. The Kit Browne North Kerry Cup is the highlight of this weekend’s Ballyduff meeting which gets underway on Friday. RALLYING: PJ TAKES HISTORIC BANNA WIN: The 2016 Banna Beach Kerry Stages Rally proved to be another exciting day of rallying action around the North Kerry roads. While the weather certainly cooperated the stages were slippery and the tyre choice was vital on the day. Tralee’s PJ O’Dowd and John Young added another trophy to their cabinet with a win in the Historic section. It was also a good day for Tommy Mason and Conor Walsh as they took the Donal O’Flaherty Memorial Trophy for the first all Kerry Motor club crew. The highest

The winning crew was the cross border combination of West Cork’s Daniel Cronin, continuing a long family tradition, and co-driver Killarney’s Shane Buckley. They took the win in their Mitsubishi Lancer E9, the car that also won the event last year in the hands of Stephen McCann and Killarney’s Damien Fleming who had to settle for third. All eyes now turn to the Initial Rentokil Killarney Historic Rally on December 3rd. ON SIDE: GREAT WEEK FOR SEAN’S: Tralee Dynamos Sean Kennedy had a day to remember on Tuesday as he played the full game for the Irish u15’s in their 0-0 draw with Poland in Lomza. The squad are away for the week and will have played their hosts again by the time this comes out. Hopefully The Park’s Sean McGrath will have gotten his chance in that game as coach Jason O’Dononghue has said that all player will start. Locally St Brendan’s Park were very unlucky to go out of the FAI Youth’s Cup in Round 2, going down 4-3 to Avenue after extra time. In Denny Premier A there were disappointing defats for both Tralee sides with the Park going down to Dingle Bay Rovers 4-1 and Dynamos losing to Fenit. Tralee Celtic and Strand Road won their games in Division 1A and 1 B. THE PARK’S / FAI’S NATIONAL DRAW: The Park club draw for prizes in the FAI’s National draw has seen Pat Keane and David Scanlon winning a pair of tickets each to the Wales game next March. Craig Hobbart and Conor Kerins have both won a free entry place to next seasons FAI Summer Soccer Camp. The much anticipated FAI’s National Draw will take place on Wednesday November 25th. Details of the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League prizes will be announced this weekend. HITTING THE SHUTTLECOCK: The annual November Handicaps Badminton tournaments saw the individual adult competitions get the season underway. The action was in the Killarney Sports Centre. The Division 5 winners were Sheenra O’Neill (Iveragh) and Padraig Hanrahan (Moyvane), Division 4 winners were Jaeb Worknan (Killarney) and John McDonnell (Ballyheigue) and Division 3 to Carmel Hudson (Moyvane) and Kieran Crehan (Killarney). The Division 1 and 2 Mixed Final was won by Brid Murphy and Tom Bourke (both from Kingdom, Castleisland). This weekend’s action will see the juvenile committee hosting their even doubles County Championships while the Butterfield Cup takes place in Thurles with the Kerry team hoping to take the title.

play in their Munster Club final and trainer Harry O’Neill was hoping they would have a week off after a recent busy schedule of 7 weekends of back to back action. It is also reported that Stacks, who have been out of action for a number of weeks, will not be anywhere near full strength either. On a positive note it will probably give some of the fringe players a chance to play in what is always a competitive fixture. CAMOGIE: The Kerry Camogie County Board will hold their AGM on Sunday 4th of December at Kerins O’Rahilly’s Clubhouse starting at 7.30pm. County Scor title for Na Gaeil: Congratulations to Na Gaeil who won the Leiriu / Sketch at the Scor na nOg County finals. They now qualify for the Munster semi-finals in Cashel in December. The members of the Group were: Aine O’Shuilleabhain, Dearbhla Ni Choirc, Barra O’Siochru, Joshua de Roiste, Sean O’Coisteala and Liam Og Mac Clochaire. St Pat’s put in a great performance in the Ballad Group but were just pipped on the night by Glenflesk. NA GAEIL CHAMPS: Na Gaeil and Fossa enjoyed a great League campaign with both being promoted from Division 4. The only question was who would go up as champions? Again there was nothing between the sides and the Tralee side will be delighted to go up as League winners on a score line of 0-15 to 2-07. Castlegregory are the other promoted side in that Division. PARNELL’S NEWS: The AGM will take place this Friday night, November 18th, in the Kerin’s O’Rahillys clubhouse at 9pm. Winter Indoor: Tralee Parnell’s winter indoor sessions have started on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Tralee Sports Complex from 6.30pm. The U10’s are first up so all current players are invited to attend and each child is to bring e2 to cover overheads. Table Quiz: The club thanks all those who supported the fun table quiz last Friday night. Well done to the team from Ballymac who took the top honours. Many attended have asked about a club Christmas gathering and further developments will be released in the coming weeks. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S TOWN BOARD CHAMPIONS: The re-fixed Town Board Championship final took place last weekend with Ballymacelligott the challengers. The seniors were eager to end the season with some silverware and a good start set up the win for the Tralee side. A score of 3-19 was notched up on the day and that will win most games. It gave Rahillys a good win 3-19 to 2-10 with

IN THE SQUARE: THE GAA NEWS:

BLACK AND AMBER CLASH NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY IN: The Credit Union Senior County League Division 1 final sees Dr Crokes take on Austin Stacks this Sunday, at 2.30pm in Lewis Road Killarney. But it’s a game neither side wants to take place. In recent times this Final was played at a double up game on the opening weekend of the new season. Now this probably did not suit the sponsors but the teams were happy with the arrangement. Now the game comes a week before the Crokes

Barry Hohn Keane being named Man of the Match, scoring 1-3 in the process. A delighted captain Danny O’Sullivan was presented with the trophy. AGM: The AGM will take place on Saturday December 3rd with motions due in by the 21st and nominations by the 28th. Christmas Fair: The club will be holding its Christmas Fair on December 11th and volunteers and donations are wanted. Ladies Night Out: The Ladies enjoyed an end of season night out with 64 ladies hitting the Abbey following a lovely meal in Cassidy’s. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 13,21,27 and 30 and the next jackpot will be e4,800. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS - The u11/12 players are enjoying their basketball sessions in the Moyderwell Gym on Thursdays from 6pm. Scor: Well done to all the talented members who represented the club in Scor. Thoughts now turn to Senior Scor. Presentation Day: The youngest stars in the 6/8/10’s are looking forward to their Presentation and Calendar Day in the coming weeks. Super Touch: Well done to the team led by David Oba who won the Super Touch competition. It took a last minute score to win the Tralee area. In the Kerry finals under lights at John Mitchels the side drew with An Gaeltacht and defeated Kenmare/Templenoe, Legion and Milltown/Castlemaine to take the title. This competition is very good preparation for the Town Board u15 Championship. The u16’s defeated Na Gaeil in their Town Board Division 2 final 9-11 to 4-14. St Pat’s: In the Lotto there was no winner from the numbers drawn 7,12, 13 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e2,300. Tickets are still on sale for the Mark Leen / Shaun O’Dowd Show in the Ballygarry House. These two entertainment legends have teamed up for one night only to raise funds for the club. The show takes place on Friday, December 2nd and tickets cost e25 from the hotel and local outlets. Movember: The GAA is again supporting this fundraiser for men’s cancer research and is looking for participants to fundraise. ON THE GREENS: KINGDOM SHIELD SECOND LEG: The final inter club match-play of the season sees Tralee and Waterville compete in both the Senior and Intermediate competitions. The first legs in Tralee saw Waterville take a one hole lead in the Senior Shield and a big eight hole lead in the Intermediate. The second legs are due to take place in Waterville this Saturday. Tralee GC: In the McCarthy Insurance Singles competition James (Jim) O’Connor was the winner on 46 points followed by Bob Dillon on 42 points and Niall Lucey in third on 41. In the Ladies section Mary Savage has the cupboards full following her Christmas Hamper win. Liz Grey was second and Vera Tierney third.
