LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Misleading Advertising

I recently bought a second hand car that was advertised in my local newspaper as in perfect condition and indeed it did look very good, but the clutch went after only a month and my mechanic told me that the engine is on its way out. Mark from Kenmare The purpose of an advert is to give information that promotes a product or service to the consumer. Under Irish law, adverts should be ‘legal, decent, honest and truthful’. The Consumer Protection Act 2007 aims to prevent false or misleading indications about goods, services and prices given in the course of a business trade or profession. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission can be contacted in relation to this. http://www.ccpc.ie. The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland is an independent self-regulatory body of the advertising industry. They govern the Code of Standards for Advertising, Promotional and Direct Marketing. http://www. asai.ie However it is unfortunate in Mark’s case that the transaction was not between a business and a consumer, but a deal between two private individuals. This leaves Mark with very little legal protection if the car turns out to be faulty as in his case the old adage caveat emptor-buyer beware may apply. His only real right to redress in this situation may be if the car was sold to him with a defect that would endanger those driving it. Having said all that one could still claim that the terms of the advertisement constituted a misrepresentation and sue in contract law. If the cost of the car was below the sum of €2000 it would be well worth taking a small claims court case as that costs only €25 and the claim can be entered online at https://www.csol.ie If it is higher than the sum of €2000 then it may involve a claim to the District Court up to €15,000 or the Circuit Court €15,001-€75,000 and Mark would discuss the claim with his solicitor to look at the merits of the case and see whether it was worth pursuing the matter. LAW QUIP: It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important. KERRY’S YOUTH ARE CELEBRATED AT THE LEE STRAND/KERRY GARDA YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS 2016 Over two hundred people from across the county attended the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2016 in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday, January 27th. The celebration commenced with dinner and was followed by a presentation of twenty seven awards, accompanied with an inspiring citation of each winner’s achievements. Twenty Merit Awards, five Distinction Awards, the Voluntary Group Award and the Overall Winner Award were presented on the night. Chief Superintendent Tom Myers commended fifteen year old Timmy Dillon from Kilflynn who was announced as the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2016. Timmy was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy and the Overall Winner Certificate to mark his achievement. Timmy, a third year student at St Michael’s College in Listowel was described at the awards as an inspiration and a shining example to the young people both in school and in his community. Timmy has been

involved in many fundraising initiatives in school for charities and also for his local GAA Club St Senans. Timmy plays an important role with his local youth club and also helps out with the local coursing club. Timmy was praised for being a genuine, dependable, modest, hardworking young man who gives up his time to support the less fortunate in his community and also helping out his neighbours. The five Distinction Award Winners were: Michaela Buckley O’Riordan, Muckross, Killarney; Megan Duggan, Headford, Killarney; Diarmuid Lynch, Kielduff, Tralee; Alison Jones, Farmers Bridge, Tralee and Shay Walsh, Scartaglen, Killarney. The five distinction winners each received a Children of Lir bronze trophy and a Distinction Award Certificate to mark their achievement in this year’s awards. The Voluntary Group Achievement Award 2016 was presented to Kerry Comhairle na nÓg. Twenty Merit Award Certificates were also presented Donal Pierse, Chairperson, Lee Strand commented “Lee

Strand is delighted to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards since 1998. Lee Strand in association with An Garda Siochana have always been proactive in acknowledging and identifying the positive work by young people and voluntary groups to enhance community life in Kerry. The awards are a fantastic celebration of their outstanding achievements.” Chief Superintendent Tom Myers stated “An Garda Síochána consider it essential to engage in a positive fashion with the young people in our commu-

nities. In doing so it is necessary to acknowledge positive achievements by those young people, whether these are in the fields of voluntary work in the community, sport, or education. It would not be possible to acknowledge this achievement and have an occasion whereby the families of nominees can join in the celebrations without the support from Lee Strand, the local Co-Op highly respected in the community.” Pictures: Domnick Walsh

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens Hello my beautiful friends, I hope you’re all having a fantastic week and that you have recovered after The Rose Of Tralee.

This week, I wanted to talk about something a little different. I wanted to talk about choosing a Makeup Artist for your wedding/ a big event. There are lots of different Makeup Artists out there and choosing the right one for you and your style is very important, especially if it’s an important event or a wedding. Pictures last forever and you don’t want to end up spending time and money only to end up disappointed.

DO RESEARCH

First and foremost, look up a few Makeup Artists in your area. Look at their work, look at their qualifications and look and their experience. If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist, it’s one day, pay a bit extra for better quality. On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit.

HAVE A TRIAL

If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT. There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability.

LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/SUGGESTIONS

They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them. If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return.

If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. THIS WEEK I’M GOING TO TALK ABOUT ALL THE LITTLE THINGS I EITHER EAT OR DO TO KEEP ME ON TRACK! FROZEN SPINACH IN SHAKE I’m just going to say it, I’m not the biggest fan of vegetables. I simply don’t really enjoy the taste and wouldn’t really add them to my meals. So, my previous trainer, Rob Lipsett told me to add frozen spinach into my post workout protein shake to get essential vitamins and minerals in. I just blend it up in my Nutri Ninja and the spinach just acts like ice really. You can’t taste it at all. Spinach is high in Niacin, zinc, protein, fibre, vitamins A,C,E,K & B6 and lots more… basically it’s loaded with good things for all parts of the body. CENTRUM FOR WOMEN I do get a lot of nutrients from the food I eat daily but I ALWAYS take a multivitamin every morning. I take Centrum for Women which has everything I need. It helps support the immune system, maintain bone health, and healthy skin and metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins. PROTEIN IN OATS/SHAKE

Again, I do get the majority of Protein from food sources, but I find it easier to meet my daily protein goals with the help of a protein supplement. The one I use and recommend is MyProtein Impact Whey Protein. It is unreal value for money at less than €20 for a kg and it’s also Labdoor approved(which basically means that it has been tested in Labdoor, which is a US based lab that buys all different brands

24

TRALEE ADVERTISER

of proteins and then tests and analyses them). My favourite flavours are, Vanilla, Chocolate Brownie, Salted Caramel and White Chocolate. I actually have a discount code for MYPROTEIN.IE it’s REBECCA-R5OS to get 25% off if you’re a new customer! I put a scoop of protein into 200ml almond milk after my workout and also if I’m having porridge to add flavour I add about

15g to that. Protein isn’t going to have a magic effect, it’s just a macronutrient. Most people, especially if they’re active, don’t get enough protein so this is where the Protein Powder comes in. It also tastes unreal and I find it helps with sweet cravings.

FOLLOW A PLAN Before I go to the gym, I have to know what I’m going to do there. Upper body? Lower body? Hiit training? I just have to have a plan so that I can stay focused and get it done. No point going for machine to machine aimlessly. BRING LUNCH TO WORK Since I work in Dundrum this is a big one for me. If I bring my lunch in I know what I’m having and I stay on track. Yes there are healthy options available in Dundrum such as Chopped or Zizzis but there’s also other options which can be very tempting. So bringing my lunch in is just the easier option. STAY HYDRATED I cannot emphasise this enough. Water is magic! When you’re hydrated you can concentrate better, preform better and have more energy. Water also cleanses toxins from your body, keeps your skin supple and combats fatigue. You should at LEAST be having 2 litres a day. AT LEAST.

USE MY FITNESS PAL Once you know how many calories your body needs including Protein, Carbs and Fats – I got those numbers from my trainers at Recalibrated Bodies, you can input them into MyFitnessPal. I find it great to stay on track and ensure I hit my numbers.

BEEF STROGANOFF SOUP

TOMATO BASIL CHICKEN STEW

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 tablespoons butter, divided 1.5 pounds flank steak or sirloin steak, thinly sliced into bite-sized pieces salt and pepper 8 ounces sliced mushrooms 1 small onion, peeled and diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup dry white wine 6 cups beef stock, divided 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 8 ounces uncooked wide egg noodles 1/4 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sour cream* chopped fresh parsley

INGREDIENTS

METHOD 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Add the steak and season with a few generous pinches of salt and pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring once every minute or so, until browned. Remove steak from the pot with a slotted spoon and transfer to a separate plate. Set aside. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the stockpot, along with the mushrooms, onion and garlic. Sauté for 5-6 minutes, or until the onion is soft and the mushrooms are browned. Add in the white wine, and deglaze the pan by using a wooden spoon to scrape those tasty brown bits off the bottom of the pan. Let the mixture continue cooking for 3 minutes, until the liquid has reduced by about half. Add in 5 1/2 cups beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and egg noodles, and stir until combined. Continue cooking until the mixture reaches a simmer. Then reduce heat to medium-low and continue to simmer until the noodles are al dente, about 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, as the noodles are cooking, whisk the remaining 1/2 cup of beef stock and flour together in a small bowl until combined. When the noodles are al dente, stir the flour mixture and sour cream into the soup until they are combined. Continue simmering for 5 minutes. Stir the cooked steak back into the soup. Taste, and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve hot, garnished with parsley if desired

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 2 carrots, peeled and diced 2 stalks of celery, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 cans whole tomatoes (with their juices) 1 can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 3 cups shredded cooked chicken 2 handfuls baby spinach ¼ cup roughly chopped fresh basil 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper ¼ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes

METHOD Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrots and celery. Saute for 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion is soft and translucent. Add garlic and sauté for an additional minute or two until fragrant. Add in remaining ingredients, and stir to combine. Use a long spoon to crush the tomatoes. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer partially-covered for 10 minutes. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed. Serve with freshly-grated Parmesan cheese

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A WORLD WIDE SURVEY....

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: “Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?” The survey was a huge failure. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant. In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant. And in the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.

I TRY NOT TO COMMENT ABOUT WHAT IS IN THE NEWS BUT...

I have seen a lot of hate spewed in recent days about a man who is a constant winner and overachiever, and that’s what the people who support him like about him. Yes, he’s been caught in some lies and maybe twisted the truth a little but he’s still out there proving his haters wrong time after time! Some people are just jealous of someone who is successful and has money. Throw in a hot foreign model at his side and they hate even more. You may not have wanted him in this role, but he’s there now and there’s nothing you can do about it. I know its just going to get worse over the next several days, but like it or not, Tom Brady is in the Super Bowl.

3 DRUNK GUYS ENTERED A TAXI

3 drunk guys entered a taxi. The taxi driver knew that they were drunk so he started the engine & turned it off again. Then said, “We have reached your destination”. The 1st guy gave him money & the 2nd guy said “Thank you”. The 3rd guy slapped the driver. The driver was shocked thinking the 3rd drunk knew what he did. But then he asked “What was that for?”. The 3rd guy replied, “Control your speed next time, you nearly killed us!”

AN ELDERLY MAN IS OUT PLAYING GOLF WITH A FRIEND... An elderly man is out playing golf with a friend. During his turn, right before his swing, a funeral procession drives by along the border fence. The elderly man pauses, takes off his hat, and places it 32

on his chest. As the procession drives along, the elderly mans friend stands just flabbergasted. Once the procession passes, the elderly man resumes setting up his swing. “Now hold on a second!” The elderly mans friend shouts, “That was quite a show of respect! I have never seen anything like it!” “Well, I had to do something.” “Why’s that?” Replied the elderly mans friend. “I was married to her for 40 years!”

A PRIEST, A MINISTER, AND A RABBI HEAR ABOUT A BEAR CAUSING TROUBLE IN THE WOODS NEARBY.

The three men, friendly rivals, decide among themselves that what this bear needs to be soothed is some religion, so they declare it a contest to see who can convert it. They draw straws, and the Catholic priest is the first to try. He heads into the woods, and comes back three hours later with a few claw swipes across his face and hands, and tells the other two, “I read from the Catechism, and the bear seemed to enjoy that, but when I sprinkled him with holy water, he tried to maul me, and I ran!” The Protestant minister is the second to go, and he’s gone all evening, meeting his friends the next afternoon, with a bandage around his head and a broken leg. He says to them, “I found the bear by the river, and I preached to him from God’s holy word, and he was as gentle as a lamb, until I tried to baptize him in the river; he nearly bit my head off and I had to bolt for my life!” Lastly went the Jewish Rabbi, off into the woods. His friends hear nothing from him for two days, until they receive the word that he’s in hospital. They rush over to find him in the ICU, a cast covering most of his body, and vicious wounds all over the rest of him. They frantically ask him what happened, and between laboured breaths through the ventilator, he mutters, “You know, thinking about it, I probably shouldn’t’ve opened with the circumcision..”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY 17’S SQUAD AND FIXTURES ANNOUNCED: It became clear a few weeks ago that Kerry were entering the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland at u17 level for the second year in a row. While there is no doubt that it is a big commitment for the Kerry District League their commitment to the development of our best young talent is great to see. In a county where the Kerry minors are certainly a big draw for players of 16 plus the continued participation of Kerry in the u17 League, and hopefully the Kerry Schoolboys League will get the nod to enter the forthcoming u15 League of Ireland, means young players now have more options to choose which sport to play and can then play at the top level. My allegiance to soccer is no secret so would I encourage young players to look towards choosing the Beautiful Game and aiming to play 20 plus games over a season against the best in the country on some of the best pitches in the country – yes I would! While that is a personal opinion what is fact is that in Kerry we produce some fine young sports person in many sports and we must always strive to continue to do this while still keeping in mind the young player who will not make it to the top but just wants to play their chosen sport at their highest level – something I know all sporting organisations in Kerry are very cognisant of. The Squad: Back to the u17’s and the squad has been picked from over 70 players that presented themselves for trials. The coaches involved did not have an easy time in selecting the final 20. Making the squad are the following players from St Brendan’s Park -John Ward, Shane Jordan, Sean Carmody, James Rusk, Seb Vasiu, Michael O’Gara, Padraig McCannon and Thomas Buke. Tralee Dynamos have Dillon Robinson and Kevin Williams on the squad. Killorglin and Kennedy Cup winning goalkeeper Alex O’Connor also has a Tralee connection as he is the grandson of KDL supremo John Regan. Killarney Celtic are represented by Robert Osborne, Castleisland by Adam O’Donoghue with Adria Miravet from Listowel Celtic also

making the final 20. Boki Nikic come from Inter Kenmare while from outside of the League Ronan Cahill join’s from Pike Rovers and John Hayes comes from Carrig Celtic. Martin Coughlan and Sheagh O’Connor are among 8 from last season who have resigned for the KDL 17’s and will bring valuable experience to the squad. The Management: The KDL has not announced the make- up of the management team yet. Last season Darren Aherne came in as Head Coach mid-way through the season and saw his side garner 10 points. He ‘full time’ position is that of Regional Development Officer for Kerry but it is expected that he will be involved again. The make-up of the full management and back up will be announced at a Press Night in the coming week. The Division: Kerry will compete in the u17 Elite Division where there is one change from last season. Galway United are now the team in that city as the FAI got Mervue United and Salthill Devon to pull out to allow the League of Ireland side to have the pick of the players. The other teams in the Division are Shamrock Rovers, UCD, Bray Wanderers, Cabinteely, Wexford Youths, Waterford, Cobh Ramblers and Cork City. Early Season Fixtures: Kerry open their campaign with a trip to Galway on March 19th with their first home game set for April 2nd when Waterford come to Mounthawk Park. Kerry are also at home on Sunday April 23rd to Cabinteely. The League season runs until September 24th when Kerry will finish at Cork City. Support the Team: There is no doubt that some of the attendances last season were disappointing. I hope that this season the sports mad people of Tralee, and of the county, will come along to Mounthawk Park to support the team. The facilities are perfect, the squad strong, the opposition are the best in the country – so what better way to spend 90 minutes? NEWS FROM THE ATHLETICS WORLD: ATHLETE’S SWOP RUNNING Friday 3rd February 2016

GEAR FOR HIGH FASHION: Kerry’s top athletes will swop their training and running gear for high heels, dresses (only the females!!), suits and ties as their gala celebrations take place on Saturday, March 4th in the Dromhall Hotel in Killarney. Tickets costing e25 for adults and e15 for children are available from clubs. The Board of Kerry Athletics were delighted to announce the winners of the County Kerry Athletics Award for 2016, following a very successful AGM this week. Tralee Harriers athletes featured highly on the list of winners. In the Track and Field section Clare Fitzgerald won in the Senior Women with Aoibheann O’Brien taking the honour in the Junior women’s category. Connor Commane is a name to watch and he was named as the Juvenile Men’s winner while the evergreen Patsy O’Connor, who has made his name over a long number of years was named as the Master Men’s winner. In the International Section Rachel Bowler will be honoured. TRALEE HARRIERS NEWS: Tralee Harriers had 5 athletes in action in the Junior and u23 Irish Life Health National Indoor Championships. Aoibheann O’Brien brought home a silver medal in the Junior Women’s Long Jump, jumping 5.50m, and was a finalist in the Junior 60m sprint after recording a personal best in the heats. Eoin O’Carroll won bronze in the u23 Long Jump, with a leap of 6.59m and was a finalist in the u23 60m sprint coming home in 7.18 seconds, just outside the medals. Rachel Bowler was 4th in the the Junior Triple Jump and second in the 200m in 27.35. She lost out on a higher place in the Long Jump on count-back while Nikolia O’Connor was 4th in the Junior Men’s Long Jump. Rachel and Nikolia will be in the upcoming u19 Munster Championships in Nenagh in the coming weeks. Solange Carla trains with the Harriers during the week and took gold in the u23 Triple Jump with a new PB of 11.13m. Aoife O’Carroll competed in the Junior Women’s 200m and was third in her heat in a very competitive competition. The club wishes Cathal Fitzgibbon a speedy recovery from illness. The club will represented in the u17 Munster and u19-u21 Munster Indoor championships in the coming weeks. AT THE TRACKS: MORE RACING AT THE KINGDOM GREYHOUND STADIUM: Racing continues at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday and Saturday night with the first race off at 7.42pm. Entries for the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic close this Tuesday, February 7th with the

event starting on Friday, February 10th. Saturday morning racing: A meeting of the Kerry Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association this week was expected to give the go ahead to Saturday morning racing. John O’Keeffe is the Chairman of the Kerry GOBA and said prior to the meeting that he hoped the proposal would get the required support. “We will be making history in Tralee as we will be the first track to introduce regular Saturday morning meetings. It will be great for our members if it goes ahead.” If passed at the meeting this week racing could be underway on Saturday mornings by March and would be beamed into betting shops in Ireland and the UK. MAY DATE OR BALLYBEGGAN: Still on the track but moving up the road to Ballybeggan Park and the sound of horses hoofs on the hallowed ground will again be heard this year. The North Kerry Harriers will again run a Point to Point meeting at the track. Action will take place on Saturday May 27th with more details to follow. INSIDE THE RING: TRALEE BOXERS LOOKING TO PROGRESS TO MUNSTER DECIDERS: Boxers from all over Kerry will be hoping to fight their way glory when the Kerry County Championships take place in the Tralee Boxing Club this Saturday, February 4th. The Munster Championships will take place a month later so fighters will have to be in top shape this weekend to progress. The weight in is at 9.30am for Boy 1,2,3 and 4. The host club will be well represented as expected at the County Championships and Tralee BC ‘s Donie Jack Griffin told Kerry’s Eye that preparations are going well for their fighters. “We will have 9 young boxers in action and all will be looking to progress to Munster. They have been working hard over the past few weeks training Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings and sparring on Tuesday nights. The club is delighted with the dedication showed by the young boys since Christmas and we hope they will get their rewards this Saturday. However boxing in Kerry is very strong and we expect some tough bouts for all involved. “We wish all those taking part all the best and invite any fans of the sport to come along to the Tralee Boxing Club in Monavalley and support the young fighters”. Basketball Blitz this Sunday in John Mitchels. Wheelchair basketball is basically the same as the running game and is certainly an exciting form of the sport. Teams from Belfast, Dublin, Carlow, Athlone and Cork will join our own Wheelblazers with the first game tipping off at 11am. Games are played over 8 minute halfs. The Blitz is the 5th in the Irish Wheelchair Basketball Junior Blitz season with Limerick next on the list on March 12th followed by Cork’s Rebel Wheelers in April and the final round in Clontarf in May. ON THE COURT: Well done to Lee Strand on their sponsorship announcement of the Kerry Area Basketball Board. Basketball participation is at a very high level all over the county with the KABB doing great work in promoting their sport. Everyone is delighted to see a company with the success of Lee Strand coming on board as sponsor. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: In the Boys u14 Division 2 the Tralee boys went down 37-22 away to Rathmore. The home side got off to the better start and led at the end of 10 points to 4. Both defences were on top in the second quarter with scores at a premium and both could only add 4 points apiece to leave the half time score 14-8. St Brendan’s put in a very good third quarter outscoring their opponents 11-8 but were only able to get within 3 points at any stage and Rathmore pulled away in the final quarter to take the win. In other results in the Lee Strand Boys u16 Division 3 it finished Gneeveguilla 39-45 St Brendan’s while in the Lee Strand u14 Division 1 St Brendan’s went down to TK Bobcats 23-30. WARRIORS WIN IN DUBLIN: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors latest SuperLeague win sees them consolidate their top 4 place. They defeated DCU Saints 87-80 to move onto 12 wins from their 16 games. This leaves them in 4th place but with a 9 point lead over Killester. While Templeogue seem to have the League section in their own hands as they sit on 42 points. However Swords Thunder, UCD Marian and Tralee are all locked together on 36 points so places 2-4 are really in the melting pot. In Dublin Trae Pemnberton was again on fire hitting 33 points followed by Ryan Leonard on 21,

Kieran Donaghy on 13 and Goran Pantovice with 8. Fergal O’Sullivan finished on 7 with Darragh O’Hanlon scoring 4 and Dusan Bogdanovic 1. This weekend Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have no League game but head to South Kerry for an exhibition game in Colaiste na Sceilige at 5pm on Saturday which should attract a big crowd. The game is being staged in association with sponsor the Sea Lodge in Waterville and is a joint fundraiser for Recovery Haven and the Caherciveen Basketball Club. STORIES FROM THE WALL: 50 NOT OUT FOR DOMINIC: Glenbeigh’s Dominic Lynch has reached another milestone in his long and illustrious career as he won his 50th Munster title this week. He defeated Tipperary’s David Moloney 21-12, 18-21, 21-0. JACK’S DOUBLE WIN IN THE SINGLES: In the Munster 40x20 Junior A singles quarter final Glenbeigh’s Jack O’Shea was on top form as he defeated Tipperary’s John Ferncombe 21-9,21-4. Jack made it two wins from two later in the week in Broadford, Co Limerick when he got the better of Clare’s Ciaran Malone 21-8,21-12 to qualify for the final of the Munster 40x20 Junior A singles. IN THE SQUARE: LONG TRIP FOR KERRY’S LEAGUE OPENER: The start of the Allianz National League signals the real start of the GAA season. Kerry opens their League campaign this Sunday by making the long trip to Donegal. The Kingdom will still be without a number of regulars but following on from the McGrath Cup win a number of players will be hoping for a call from Eamonn Fitzmaurice. STACKS JUVENILE STORIES: The club wishes The Green the best of luck as they take on Colaiste Chriost Ri this Saturday in Mallow at 1.30pm.The members involved are looking forward to the big clash of The Green and Mounthawk in the Munster Quarter Final. National Draw tickets are still on sale from any Committee member and your support would be appreciated. Kerry Camogie u16’s: If anyone didn’t get to the sign-up evening for the Kerry u16 camogie team or have questions please contact the team mentors. CAMOGIE NEWS: Those involved in Kerry Camogie wish to thank all those who supported their fundraising Table Quiz last week. Follow up on seniors: The Kerry seniors are back in training for their League opener at home on February 19th. The girls are putting in a big effort ahead of their season’s campaign. There was a great turn out for the information evening held in Kilmoyley for those interested in playing with the u16’s. Well done to Causeway Comprehensive School who defeated Kilfinnane Secondary School in the Munster Intermediate Colleges final in front of a big crowd. The North Kerry School started very well and were leading 3-3 to 0-3 at half time, and were always in control winning 6-4 to 0-04 in the end. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 9,10, 13 and 27 with the next jackpot being e3,600. The draw will take place on Sunday night in O’Dwyer’s Bar. St Pat’s Lotto was 20 years old this past week and to celebrate all lotto players who play either weekly, monthly or yearly from now until June 5th will be entered into a special draw for 2 All Ireland football final tickets plus 2 night’s accommodation on that weekend. Juvenile News: The academy continues to go from strength to strength and this week Grace Costello received the u6 Player of the Week, Sean Berry won in the u8’s and Garry Scollard at u10 level. The u12’s will be back training this Sunday. Seniors: The players and managers continue to work hard ahead of their seasonal opener on February 12th. Registration is now due with the Registration Night on Friday February 10th from 7.30pm to 8.30pm in the Community Rooms. Date for your Diary: Plans are underway for the biggest and best Dingle Way Challenge on June 4th.

The 3rd annual 10k race was a huge success despite the testing conditions. Well done to all who took part especially our u14’s and their managers who ran their own 5k as part of their training. First home in the Men’s was Derek Griffin in 34.45 followed by Sean O’Sullivan (35.00) and Simon Mangan (35.42). In the Ladies Deirdre Nagle was the winner in 39.58 ahead of Sinead Daly (41.22) and Suzanne Nielan (41.36). Seniors: The seniors began training last Friday in Strand Road with a big turn-out despite the tough conditions. This Sunday February 5th sees them play Na Gaeil in Killeen in the Tralee Town League at 12.30pm without their county panellists. This will be a good test and opportunity for fringe players ahead of the League starting in late March. The Minors got their season off to a fine start with a win over Ballymac with the underage are all back in training. The family fun day is set for Sunday February 12th at Strand Road from 2.30 to 5pm to launch the clubs move to Sunday’s for the boys and girls academy from 4 to 10 years of age. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 9,28,29 and 32 and the next jackpot will be e6000. THE OVAL BALL: Tralee bowed out of the McElligott Cup at the semi-final stage going down to Killorglin. This was an epic encounter with the J3 side getting the better of their J2 opponents. Tralee scored a late try to get right back into contention but a failed conversation proved to be the difference in the end. Killorglin now face Castleisland in the McElligott Cup final. Its back to League action for Tralee this week with another very important game away to Crosshaven in the J2 Division 2. On the Greens: At the Tralee Golf Club the Captain’s Drive In (Margaret Murphy and John Reen) took centre stage. The Front 9 went to the team of Allan Kelly, Pat Williams, JP Enright and Gene Kelly. Second were Tom Moore, Bob Dillon, Kevin Rolls and Barry Murphy. Taking third was the foursome of Steve Renardson, Dave Tarrant, Paddy O’Donoghue and Kieran Dinan. The Back 9 competition was won by Mary Sheehy, John Joe Sheehy, Brendan Kenny and Brian Sheehy. MIRACLE PRAYERS IN MEMORIAM 8th Anniversary

PRAYER TO HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. To that end and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you..(mention your favour). Amen

T. G.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. C.S.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
