Since I entered politics in 1983, I have always given Tralee my top priority and hold a weekly clinic in the Grand Hotel, Denny Street each Monday from 4pm to 6.30pm. My wife, Mary Dowling, grew up in Tralee where her family has been in business for the past 60 years. She teaches in MounthawkSecondary School.
Health
I have been a constant campaigner for improved services at Kerry General Hospital and played a major supportive role in getting the Community Nursing Unit for the town, a facility which I officially opened in 2014. I campaigned for a number of years for a new A&E, a Mammography Unit, improved cardiovascular services, the extension of the Palliative Care Unit, and other services at the hospital. OPENING OF COMMUNITY NURSING UNIT, KGH.
Education
As a former teacher, I have a special interest in education. I am delighted to have been involved directly in the provision of a new Primary school at Blennerville, the extensions to Scoil Eoin NS, Balloonagh, CBS Primary School, and Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School. I was also honoured to have been invited to open the new extension to CBS Secondary School, The Green, Tralee. In the recent Capital Programme for School Building announced by the Government a new school will be provided for Gaelcoláiste Chiarraí in 2017. Also, at primary level, new schools will be provided for Listellick (NS) and Tralee Educate Together. The previous government had made a decision to amalgamate the Kerry Education Service with Limerick Education Service. I was central to getting the decision reversed, as it would have led to a loss of jobs in Kerry and the dismantling of what is a very successful service. I have a long association with Tralee Institute of Technology. As a member of Cabnet, I ensured that Tralee IT will be granted University status, and together with CIT in Cork, will form the new Munster Technological University once specific performance criteria have been achieved. This will be a significant boost for Tralee and Kerry. I have worked closely with the foundation promoting the Centre of Excellence on the IT campus. This will involve an investment of €13 million, and work will commence in 2016. This government provided €7 million in the 2016 Capital Programme for the centre.

Business and Employment
I was delighted to have played a role in JRI America locating in the Technology Park. JRI now employs 70 highly skilled individuals and will be expanding its workforce in the years ahead. I opened a 14,000 square foot office for JRI on January 11th. The IDA will also be providing an advance manufacturing unit in the technology park which will improve considerably the probability of attracting new, quality employment to Tralee. I was instrumental in having Tralee included as one of only three locations nationally for this type of facility at a cost of €20 million.

Tralee By-Pass
For years the people of Tralee have suffered from traffic congestion resulting in delayed commuting times to work.
OFFICIAL OPENING TRALEE BY-PASS WITH THE ROSES
I was delighted that work on the Tralee by-pass commenced and was completed during the present government’s time in office and that I had the honour of opening the €75 million project in August 2013 - the biggest investment in any road project to date in the county. I campaigned for the bypass for many years.
Urban Regeneration
The regeneration of the Mitchel’s district in Tralee is recognised as being one of the most successful of its kind in the country. Over €28 million has been spent on the project resulting in the improvement in the quality of life for its residents. I am confident that further funding for a scheme of 11 houses and environmental works will be provided to complete the re-generation project during 2016.
Sport Capital Programme
Since the formation of this government in 2011 various sporting organisations in Tralee have been successful in getting funding from the Sports Capital Programme. To date, Tralee sporting organisations has been allocated in excess of €850,000.

ELECTION CANDIDATE, GRACE O DONNELL PUSHING FOR A SAFER RURAL KERRY Grace was commenting on a listener who had rang into “Kerry Today “ on Radio Kerry .” about the dangers and threats that people are exposed to while living in rural Kerry these days . Grace said “Tadgh McCarthy on this weeks “Kerry Today” told us nothing we didn’t know already. It is people like Tadgh who are looking after the elderly and the isolated of the county at this time. It is communities looking out for each other through the community alert system and the texting alerts when activated that must be applauded. I will be pushing for changes to strengthen the laws and asking for those laws that are already there to be vigorously applied. Make it difficult for the criminals to operate and make it easier for the genuine trade’s people to move with ease in the community. Make it compulsory for all commercial vehicles to have clear signage on the vehicle which would indicate the service offered the owner of the business and a contact number. The Gardai should have the power to search all commercial vehicles and seize any goods where proof of ownership cannot be proven. It is believed that tools etc. are sold through car boot sales; therefore it should be possible for the Gardai to visit these sales and seize goods where origin cannot be proven. It is believed that much of the machinery taken from farm yards is broken up and sold for scrap metal. Greater regulation should be placed on scrap collectors and dealers. Again where origin cannot be proven, prosecution should ensue. Finally all those who are in the business of selling their wares or their services from vehicles should be regulate and licensed, strengthening traceability and giving customers redress for shoddy workmanship. It is said that one can do nothing if unwanted, uninvited, and unwelcome visitors do not leave your property when asked to do so. There are already laws covering harassment on the statute books which would cover this offence If elected I will be pushing for implementation of laws to make it safer for rural Kerry.” Grace O’Donnell. LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Misleading Advertising
I recently bought a second hand car that was advertised in my local newspaper as in perfect condition and indeed it did look very good, but the clutch went after only a month and my mechanic told me that the engine is on its way out. Mark from Kenmare The purpose of an advert is to give information that promotes a product or service to the consumer. Under Irish law, adverts should be ‘legal, decent, honest and truthful’. The Consumer Protection Act 2007 aims to prevent false or misleading indications about goods, services and prices given in the course of a business trade or profession. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission can be contacted in relation to this. http://www.ccpc.ie. The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland is an independent self-regulatory body of the advertising industry. They govern the Code of Standards for Advertising, Promotional and Direct Marketing. http://www. asai.ie However it is unfortunate in Mark’s case that the transaction was not between a business and a consumer, but a deal between two private individuals. This leaves Mark with very little legal protection if the car turns out to be faulty as in his case the old adage caveat emptor-buyer beware may apply. His only real right to redress in this situation may be if the car was sold to him with a defect that would endanger those driving it. Having said all that one could still claim that the terms of the advertisement constituted a misrepresentation and sue in contract law. If the cost of the car was below the sum of €2000 it would be well worth taking a small claims court case as that costs only €25 and the claim can be entered online at https://www.csol.ie If it is higher than the sum of €2000 then it may involve a claim to the District Court up to €15,000 or the Circuit Court €15,001-€75,000 and Mark would discuss the claim with his solicitor to look at the merits of the case and see whether it was worth pursuing the matter. LAW QUIP: It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important. GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER... KNOW YOUR RIGHTS HELP FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN FLOODED
M: 0873931388
Men’s Undercut hairstyles to try in 2016 The undercut hairstyle has been a staple hair trend on the runways in recent years. It’s youthful and can work well for curly, straight or wavy hair.
The Classic Undercut
This is a more conservative type of style. It maintains trimmed sides but leaves the top not too long. We would recommend it for those who may want something different but not too standout-ish. Styling is extremely simple- hairdryer and Layrite Superhold.
The Layered Undercut
This is a more dramatic undercut, used to add fullness and depth from a visual perspective. When in the barber get them to start cutting short sections and then longer ones depending on how you like it to frame your face. For styling use mousse or a matte gel like Layrite cement.
Slicked back Undercut
The trick to pulling off this cut is to ensure the top is long enough for the styling process. Make sure that no matter how short you choose to go on the sides that the top top is tamed. For styling use a matte gel to give it texture or a high shine gel for a sleek look. Hairdryer is a necessity.
Puffy Undercut.
The only thing you’ll need to pull of this cut is a lot of volume and texture. This version of undercut is also dependant on the kind of hair you possess naturally. Men with curly or wavy hair will find styling easier to recreate as they have volume. For straight hair the use of layering is important and will aid the styling. Matte hair products work best with this style (Layrite cement) The undercut really is the top trend for 2016 and with so many variations available you should be able to find one to suit you.

Question
My house was flooded and badly damaged. What help can I get?
Answer
The Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme provides means-tested emergency financial help immediately following flooding. The Government has not set a limit on the amount that can be paid to an individual household under this scheme. The amount paid depends on how severe the damage is and your ability to meet these costs. The scheme covers: 1. Emergency income support payments. 2. Damage to your home and its essential contents, such as carpets, flooring, furniture and household appliances and bedding. 3. Structural damage may also be considered. The Department of Social Protection also provides exceptional and urgent needs payments which can help in the aftermath of a flood. If your home has been flooded and you are getting help from the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme, you can apply to have your 2016 Local Property Tax (LPT) payment deferred (even if you do not qualify for deferral under the normal criteria). Contact the LPT Helpline on 1890 200 255 to make the relevant arrangements. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has information on cleaning a home after flooding and dealing with the psychological effects of flooding. The Office of Public Works (OPW) has a website, flooding.ie, that gives information about what to do before, during and after a flood. There are two publications giving details of the help available: • Leaflet – Schemes Available For People Affected by Recent Flooding • Booklet – Government Assistance For People Affected by Flooding You can get the leaflets on the welfare.ie website or from your local Citizens Information Centre.

Although I’m not much of a romantic myself I do love an excuse to create a fun window display so this week at 321 we’ve jumped on the Valentine’s bandwagon to show off some of our lovely clothes, shoes and accessories. Once again we’ve had incredible donations this week, just in time if you’re looking to pick up something fabulous to wear for Valentine’s night! This gorgeous yellow lace Marc Angelo dress, which retailed at €79.95, is available in a size 12 for €15. We also have a stunning blue Amor Vitae dress in a size 14, which retailed at €46, for €12.50. Both dresses, like most of the donations we received this week, are brand new and still have their original tags – pop in and see for yourself, we’re directly across from the Kerry School of Music. We’ve also received some excellent furniture including a brand new rocking chair (still in its original box), wooden linen boxes and a couple of bedside cabinets – all of which are in great condition. We have a huge selection of books which are either brand new or gently used for a fraction of the retail price so if you’re a reader then we’re definitely worth a visit! We really appreciate all of the donations we receive, the generosity of the public has been outstanding, and we hope you will continue to keep us in mind when you are looking to spring clean! We are always looking for the following: Clothing, shoes, bags and accessories Bric a brac such as ornaments, pottery, picture frames, dvds… Furniture including cabinets, wardrobes, bed frames, tv units… I look forward to seeing you the next time you stop by!

IS THIS THE STRONGEST PINT IN TOWN ? ROUNDYS THINK SO!
News has just reached us here at the Tralee Advertiser of a new beer at our old friends Roundys bar. Its an IPA from Mcgargles in Kildare and it weights in at a whopping 7.1%. “ we have stocked Mcgargles knock knock Ned for a few months now and its been selling very well so when we were offered its big brother , the Francis big bangin IPA we jumped at the chance “ said Ian Flaherty. “At 7.1% its got quiet a kick to it . We think its the strongest draught beer in town. If you find anything stronger we would love to hear about “ I think the Tralee Advertiser team will have to have a taste this weekend, strictly out of professional interest of course !!

Bexblah Beauty
This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens
Hello my beautiful friends hope you’re all having a great week! This week on Bexblah Beauty I’m going to be talking about my current Mascara favourites. I am a complete mascara whore and literally have about 5 on the go at one time so I said I’d just share which ones I am currently loving.
1. L’oreal Telescopic:
2. Benefit They’re Real:
When I first tried this product I really didn’t get the hype. I got a sample size and I’m converted. This stuff is amazing, again adds tonnes of length and doesn’t clump! It’s €26.
You will ALWAYS find this mascara in my makeup collection. I absolutely love it. It’s about €15/€16, a bit pricey for drugstore makeup but I’m obsessed. Great for length!
3. Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara: This was
4. NYC City Curl Mascara: I have been a lot
more into curling my lashes lately so when I saw this I really wanted to try it. I was drawn to the gorgeous pink packaging of course. I feel silly for not have had tried NYC mascara before, this one is fantastic too. It really gives my lashes a great curl as well as volume. It doesn’t clump easily too which is always a bonus! Again this mascara is under €3 so why not give it a whirl.
highly recommended by a friend so of course I had to try it. It’s one of my new favourites at the moment, it gives craaaaazy volume. The brush does tend to load up with product though so I always scrape the excess off. It’s about a tenner so it’s in the middle ish price range.
5. NYC Sky Rise Mascara:
I picked this up in January because I had never tried any of the NYC mascaras and was curious. I love how this mascara lengthens and separates my lashes with absolutely no clumping. I do layer it with my Max Factor one if I want a bit more volume but this mascara is fab on it’s own too. The price is even better, for less than €3 you have to try it for yourselves!
So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my current mascara favourites. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! Bexblah Fitness! Hello my strong friends! Hope you’re all having a great week. This week I will be talking all about Protein, Carbohydrates and Fat, and why they’re all essential to a healthy diet. Each of these are essential in everyone’s food plan. For some reason women tend to think too much protein will make them bulky or muscly, people think carbohydrates will make them fat, and that fat is the devil… WRONG. PROTEIN: Proteins are the main building blocks of the body. They’re used to make muscles, tendons, organs and skin. Proteins are also used to make enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and various tiny molecules that serve important functions. Without protein, life as we know it would not be possible. Many sports nutrition experts have concluded that protein requirements are higher for athletes, the additional protein may be needed in order to promote muscle adaptation during recovery from exercise in several ways: • Aiding in the repair of exercise-induced damage to muscle fibers. • Facilitating the replenishment of depleted energy stores. CARBOHYDRATES: So many people, mostly women, are nearly afraid of carbs. “They’re bad” “They’ll bloat me” “I’ll get fat”. If you eat the right kind of carbs, they will do none of these things, it’s not the carbs making you fat, it’s the high sugar and salt content. Carbohydrates are all about energy and are found in foods like fruits, vegetables, breads, pasta, and dairy products. Your body uses these foods to make glucose, which is your body’s main energy source. Glucose is a type of sugar that can be used right away for energy or stored away to be used later. FATS: Fat will not make you fat! Fats provide essential fatty acids, energy, appetite suppressant; good fats help our bodies release the bad fats. If your daily fat intake is cut back too much, your body will preserve fat for survival rather than release it for energy. The accumulation of body fat usually results from unhealthy fats. These unhealthy fats, which include the saturated, trans and dietary cholesterol types, not the healthy ones such as monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and omega 3 (a polyunsaturated fat), are the primary contributors to disease and excess weight gain.
How to eat good fats?
Snack on peanuts. Peanuts are high in monounsaturated fats and provide a good energy source without all the trans and saturated fats that are contained in typical snack foods. Again, don’t overindulge in this good source of fats; but rather, limit their consumption to half a cup per serving. Use olive oil in salad dressings and in marinades. Olive oil, the most nutritionally beneficial of the monounsaturated fats, is the ideal replacement for the commonly used polyunsaturated vegetable oil. Replace high calorie, saturated fat containing cheese and meats with avocado and a cold-water fish source such as salmon, when making sandwiches. In doing this you are exchanging bad fats for good fats, thus eliminating unwanted calories from the wrong sources. Use nuts and seeds, rather than chocolate pieces when baking or as a topping for various deserts. Use fatty fish in place of red meat or chicken for at least three meals per week. Limit, or eliminate entirely, fast foods fried in trans fats, and other good containing these fats.

SIMPLY PANCAKES!
Ah Pancake Tuesday was a day I always looked forward too , no matter how many my mother made, they were gone just as quick As a kid it was just sugar and a squeeze of lemon, sometimes the simplest is the best and it is still one of my favourite ways. But I do like the odd change so here is my batter and gluten free batter also A
MAKES: 8 PANCAKES INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
150g plain flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder pinch of salt 1 large egg 240ml milk 2 tablespoons melted butter
FOR THE PANCAKE MIX: 1. 2.
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and add the egg and a litle milk. Beat with a fork or a whisk, adding more milk until the batter is smooth. Whisk in the melted butter. Heat a non-stick pan until it’s hot. Use a ladle to pour in some batter; swirl it around to just about cover the base of the frying pan. Once it starts to firm up and begins to bubble, loosen the edges and flip it over to cook the other side. Repeat until you’ve used all of the mix.
GLUTENFREE BATTER INGREDIENTS
Makes: 40 pancakes • 250g brown rice flour • 125g sorghum flour • 80g potato flour • 120g cornflour • 50g caster sugar • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 pinch of nutmeg
FOR THE PANCAKE MIX: 1. 2. 3. 4.
In a large bowl, combine brown rice flour, sorghum flour, potato flour, cornflour, caster sugar, baking powder, bicarb, salt and nutmeg. Mix until well combined. Store in an airtight container at room temperature up to two months or in the freezer for six months. To prepare the pancakes: To prepare the pancake batter: Beat 2 eggs, 250ml milk and 2 tablespoons melted butter in a bowl. Add 130g of pancake mix and stir until smooth. Heat a griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat and grease with a bit of butter. Drop batter, in about 60ml portions, onto hot pan and cook until bubbles form on the surface, 3 to 4 minutes. Turn with a spatula and cook on the other side until brown, 1 to 2 minutes Recipes by

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... EVERYONE’S A WINNER AT THE STRAND ROAD 10K !! A few words about the great day from Club PRO Breda Dyland
“Kerins O’Rahillys held their second 10K run on Sunday last. It was a commemorative run and held to honour one of the men whose names we are privileged to have associated with our club. The run honoured “The O’Rahilly” and we were very thankful to his Great grandson John O’Rahilly who made the journey from Dublin to meet everyone and to present the commemorative medals and trophies after the race. The overall winners were in the men’s, 1st Stephen Young, 2nd Pat Dunworth and 3rd John Barrett. In the ladies race Catriona Barry crossed the line in first place with Jessica McCarthy 2nd and Caoimhe Casey 3rd. The team events were won by the Austin Stacks ladies, Catriona Barry, Eileen Egan and Michelle Hoare. The men’s team event was won by the Kerry Crusaders, David Toomey, Donal White, Andrew Purcell and John Barrett. We would like to congratulate all of the category winners and also all of those who took part and finished the race. For many it was their first 10K and many more recorded personal bests on the day. A remark made by one spectator at the finish line was about the positive atmosphere and that everyone finished with a smile on their face so we will see you all again next year. All presentations were made in the clubhouse afterwards where everyone was treated to hot soup. We would like to thank Tom and Eileen O’Shea for this and their co-operation over the last few weeks. We would also like to congratulate the organisers of the event and thank all of those club members who showed up bright and early to steward and help on the morning. Thanks also to all of those who sponsored the event. We look forward to working with you again in the future.”
TRALEE CITIZENS INFORMATION VOLUNTEER GETS DUE REWARD
Volunteers from Citizens Information were honoured at a recent awards ceremony for 5 and 10 years voluntary service to their community. Board Member Billy Mullins and Manager Frances Clifford presented awards to Monica Fitzell from Tralee Citizens Information Centre (CIC), Denis Lane from Listowel CIC, Maureen Long, May McCarthy and Donough Spillane from Killarney CIC for 5 and 10 years’ service. Frances Clifford said “We are very proud of the fact that a lot of people volunteer with us for many years. Volunteers contribute so positively on so many levels. We are very appreciative of the time they selflessly give to assisting others. We simply could not provide the service without them.” Monica Fitzell said “The comradery of working within a welcoming team of like-minded people, the challenge of learning new information and the sense of doing something which is of value to the community are some of the reasons why I volunteer with Citizens Information in Kerry”. Volunteers are a key part of the service and work along with a small number of paid staff to deliver information, advise & advocacy to the community. All Information Providers receive extensive and continuous training to enable them to give up-to-date and accurate information to the public. Those who have used the service have commented that without the professional support of the Citizens Information team they would not have been able to access their rights or deal with the issues which were paramount to them. Last year Kerry CIS responded to over 19,000 callers and over 26,000 queries.
BENNERS HOTEL SECURE TOP AWARD IN PRESTIGIOUS CIE TOURS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE Benners Hotel , newly opened in 2015 and owned by the O’Sullivan family (Der O Sullivans , The Mall ) was one of a number of Kerry hotels, a restaurant and visitor attractions that swept the boards in the prestigious CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence for 2015 which were announced at a ceremony in Dublin Castle this week . The awards were presented by the CIE Chairman, Vivienne Jupp. Four hotels came away with awards for the best in their category, including Benners Hotel in Tralee while nine others also received coveted awards. One B&B, restaurant and bar was judged to have provided the Best Lunch. Eight visitor attractions in the county received awards, which are in their 26th year and come from a survey of 28,000 CIE Tours International customers. It was revealed that the visitors carried by CIE Tours generated revenues of €83 million in 2015. CIE Tours International brought 44,000 visitors to Ireland during the past year. Awards of Excellence were presented to 98 outstanding hotels and visitor attractions spread right around the country. 26

At a restaurant, a man sees an attractive girl sitting alone at the next table. Suddenly, she sneezes, and a glass eye comes flying out of her eye socket. It hurls by the man, and he snatches it from the air and hands it back to her. “This is so embarrassing,” the girl says, and she pops her eye back in place. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you. Let me buy a drink to make it up to you. May I join you?” He agrees. The girls is good at keeping conversation, stunningly pretty, and the man finds they have a lot in common. He asks her phone number and then he compliments her: “You are the most charming girl I’ve ever encountered. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No”, she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.”

In the middle of the night, the woman wakes the man up and says “Hey! Will you go get me another blanket? I’m freezing!” The man smiles and says, “I have a better idea. Why don’t you and I, just for tonight, pretend we’re married?” The woman thinks about it, and with a devlish grin, she agrees. The man then says, “Get your own damn blanket! I’m trying to sleep”

A store that sells new husbands has opened in London, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates: You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads: Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids. ‘That’s nice,’ she thinks, ‘but I want more.’ So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking. ‘Wow,’ she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads: Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Dropdead Good Looking and Help With Housework. ‘Oh, mercy me!’ she exclaims, ‘I can hardly stand it!’ Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads: Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Dropdead Gorgeous, Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak. She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.

TRALEE DOG DIRT CAMPAIGN The TY pupils in the CBS the Green launched their campaign to raise awareness of the issue of Dog Dirt on Tralee’s Paths and Walkways on Friday 29th January when they made a presentation to Tralee Tidy Towns at their bi-monthly meeting. The campaign is being supported by Tralee Tidy Towns and Tralee Chamber Alliance The pupils presented the results of the survey they carried out which showed that all of the people surveyed (both dog owners and non-owners) believe that dog dirt is the responsibility of the dog owner. The pupils feel this is a positive shift in the way people think about this issue. More and more dog owners are aware of the need to take their dog’s dirt home with them. The Tys are liaising with groups, organisations and clubs in Tralee such ast vets, kennels, pet shops to come on board and give their support to this campaign.
In the coming weeks they will be asked to display posters and stickers to highten awareness of the dog dirt issue. Tralee Chamber Alliance and Tralee Tidy Towns along with the TY pupils and Team Bramble are asking the people of the town to support them in their campaign.

MOYDERWELL MERCY PRIMARY ‘SPRINGS’ INTO HEALTHY LIVING.
Over the last 3 weeks, Mr. Griffin’s 2nd class pupils from Moyderwell Mercy Primary have been participating in their own version of Operation Transformation. As well as their regular P.E. classes of football and swimming, pupils also participate in at least 10 minutes of additional exercise per day. These extra activities include walking, running, skipping & dancing. Pupils have also done great research into the levels of sugar that is in our daily intake. They had the pleasure of visiting Garvey’s Supervalu on Monday to analyse the sugar and fat content of 50 various foods that would be in a normal weekly shopping trolley. The results were alarming. The boys and girls found extremely high levels of sugar in Coca Cola, Fanta, Nutella, Cereal bars, jams & biscuits. Sweets and chocolates also contained extremely high levels of sugar. On a positive note, the boys and girls discovered a wide range of beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables which are very healthy for our bodies. Tim Moynihan, Assistant Manager at Garveys SuperValu, welcomed and praised the children for their hard work. Each child received two pieces of healthy fruit free of charge for their super efforts. Further results of this food survey will be available at the school’s open night this Thursday February 4th at 7pm or on the school’s website and Facebook.

34 CRANES OVER DUBLIN’S SKYLINE AS CON-STRUCTION BOOM GATHERS PACE There were 34 construction cranes visible over the centre of Dublin from the seventh floor of The Irish Times building on Tara Street on February 1st. Just five of these, however, were located north of the river Liffey while the remaining 29 tended to be concentrated in the south docklands and along the Grand Canal. With the economy expected to continue its strong recovery this year and a number of significant developments due to enter the construction phase shortly, it’s likely that the number of cranes on the Dublin skyline will increase over the months ago. The Irish Times will be conducting a crane survey, once a month, to track construction levels in the city.(Irish Times Property )
NEWRY COMPANY TO DEMOLISH BERKELEY COURT HOTEL
Chartered Land, the property group run by Irish developer Joe O’Reilly, has appointed contractors to demolish the former Berkeley Court hotel site in Ballsbridge to make way for 200 high-end apartments. Newrybased John Tinnelly & Sons has been appointed to demolish the former five-star hotel to prepare for the first phase of this multi-million euro residential development. The contractors began work on the site last week. The initial focus is on removing and disposing of the interior structure of the hotel building – which was branded as the Clyde Court at the time it closed on January 1st. The demolition of the physical structure will begin in the second half of this month. The development will involve 200 exclusive apartments in a pavilion-style development on Lansdowne Road. They will come to market next year with completions during 2018. More than 500 jobs will be created during construction. The adjoining Ballsbridge Hotel – formerly known as Jurys – will continue to be traded by listed hotel group Dalata until at least the middle of 2018. TORQUING CARS! THE FINAL MILE FOR THE LAND ROVER DEFENDER: THE ICONIC VEHICLE, LOVED BY DRIVERS FROM THE QUEEN TO JAMES BOND, CEASES PRODUCTION ON FRIDAY(TODAY) It is best known as a rugged, durable car that can wade through mud, floods or desert sand. But the Land Rover Defender - popularised by the Royals, film-makers and even football managers - will cease production on Friday. The classic model, today called the Defender, has become the most recognisable off-road car since it first appeared in 1948. Motor enthusiasts have lamented the end of an era, calling it the ‘death of an icon’. Featuring in the 2012 Bond movie Skyfall and Tom Cruise film Edge of Tomorrow, the Defender name can be traced back to the early 1990s. But effectively, the popular 4x4 vehicle, which is exported all around the world, represents the continuation of the very first Land Rover which came on to the scene 68 years ago and was modelled on the war-time jeeps. Since the 1950s, the Queen has regularly been spotted as either a passenger of driver in a Land Rover.
British soldiers used the classic car to carry out patrols on the streets of Belfast during the Troubles. he vehicles were used by British troops during conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan because of their ability to overcome large areas of sand. Bob Paisley and Matt Busby - the celebrated former Liverpool and Manchester United managers - paraded around Wembley Stadium in a Land Rover before the 1983 Charity Shield. A number of film-makers have also chosen Land Rovers to make their action sequences as exciting as possible. Land Rover Defenders were used in a car chase during the opening sequence of 2012 James Bond movie Skyfall. The vehicles also featured in Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and the 2014 sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise. im Holder, editorial director of magazines Autocar and What Car?, said the Defenders ‘appeal to every level of society’. He told the Press Association: ‘It’s a classless vehicle. Anyone can drive it. You might be a farmer trying to get over the muddiest field or it might be the Queen driving around Windsor. Neither would surprise you if you saw it. ‘It’s got that ubiquity where it can be at home in Chelsea but doesn’t look out of place painted white in the middle of a war zone. ‘It claims to do everything and to a degree it can do everything.’ Mr Holder believes Jaguar Land Rover made the decision to cease production of Defenders because ‘regulations have finally caught up with it’. He said: ‘They haven’t been able to update crash safety or the engine emissions quick enough. ‘The world has overtaken it to a point where they can no longer keep on the right side of emissions and safety laws.’ JLR is working on a replacement vehicle for the Defender, but Mr Holder claimed it will be a ‘massive challenge’ to match the status of the original.
WOMAN PULLS OVER ‘SPEEDING’ POLICE OFFICER
A woman in Miami has filmed the moment she lectured a police officer on the importance of setting a good example, after pulling him over for “speeding”. Claudia Castillo caught the incident on her dashboard camera, before posting it to her YouTube account. After a lengthy chase in which she said the officer recklessly weaved in and out of traffic, Ms Castillo was finally able to get his attention by honking her horn and flashing her lights. In the video, the officer can be seen walking up to Ms Castillo’s car window, at which point she tells him: “The reason I’ve pulled you over today and I’m asking you to come over and have a conversation is because you were pushing 90mph. “I was going 30mph and you passed me like I was standing still,” she continues. “I pushed 80 to try and catch up with you and I was still eating your dust. And I just want to know, what’s the emergency?” The officer appears taken aback, before saying: “I don’t know how fast I was going. But I can tell you this, I’m on the way to work right now. I don’t believe I was speeding, but you’re entitled to your opinion.” Ms Castillo then proceeds to lecture the officer on the responsibilities of those in authority, at which point he apologises and says: “I’ll be sure to slow down.”

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TRALEE STAR’S ON THE NATIONAL STAGE: It was certainly a case of quality over quantity for Kerry basketball at the Cup finals weekend at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. St Brendan’s Basketball club were the only Kerry side in action and they brought home the Hula Hoops Men’s National Intermediate Club Championship trophy to Tralee following a 78-60 win over Leixlip Nemunas. While it was far from a one man show Kieran Donaghy lived up to his Star name as he was voted MVP with a ‘triple –double’ of 18 points, 26 rebounds and12 assists. The game was tighter than the score-line suggests with two late back to back triples from Darren O’Sullivan ensuring the trophy was coming back to Tralee. The Leixlip side, made up mostly of Lituathanian players opened up a 17-7 win but the introduction of Ireland u20 squad member Mike O’Donnell gave St Brendan’s the impetus and with Donaghy finishing the quarter on 8 points and 8 rebounds the Tralee side were back in the game. All year St Brendan’s have been enjoying a wide spread of scorers and their bench has proved fully capable of stepping up when called upon. Jason Quirke came off the bench and hit a big three pointer and with Paul McMahon also on the mark they went on a 9-2 run. Fergal O’Sullivan then hit a three pointer to put 9 between the sides but a turnover in the last 14 seconds meant they missed the chance to increase their lead. Leixlip tried hard to get back into the game but pressure from the Saints defence saw their opponents accuracy fall off and a three pointer from O’Sullivan followed by two successful free throws from the same player opened the gap to 46-33. Into the 4th quarter and Darren O’Sullivan’s excellent three point accuracy of 63% supported by Donaghy excelling all over the court the Tralee boys brought another national title to Kerry. St Brendan’s coach Gareth Moore saw 7 of his players on the score sheet with Darren O’Sullivan ending with 21 followed by Kieran Donaghy on 18. Fergal O’Sullivan filled the role of assistant coach and hit 14 points, Paul McMahon had 10, Jason Quirke 5 with Nathan Roche and Rob Mulcahy both hitting a basket each. The rest of the squad who all did their jobs were Conor Donaghy, Stephen Hanifan, Kasper Buitydas and Cyril Wallace. Celebrations began right after the final whistle with a huge crowd of St Brendan’s supporters, led by club chairman Pa Carey, in the arena. It was a huge win for the club and indeed for the sport in Tralee and in the county. Another pleasing aspect was that St Brendan’s looked very much at home on the national stage so thoughts will turn to the club entering a team in the National League. But that’s a discussion for a later day. The club will for the moment bask in the glory of being the 2016 National

Intermediate Basketball Club Champions. MORE STAR’S ON SUNDAY: If Kieran Donaghy was the star on Saturday then it was the Ladies turn on Sunday. Tralee’s Deirdre O’Shea was part of the successful NUIG squad who had a big 71-44 win over Oblate Dynamos. The Galway side have been the stand out team in the Women’s Division 1 League all season and were never in danger in the Hula Hoops Senior Women’s National Cup final. They went 15-0 early on and led by 20 after 11 minutes. It was 42-19 at the break and Deirdre and her teammates ran out 27 point winners. There was double joy for Kerry basketball when Listowel’s Aine McKenna and her Montenotte Glanmire team took the Hula Hoops Women’s National Cup 96-64 against Pyrobel Killester. This was the Mark Scannell coached side’s 6th Cup win in a row and saw them become only the second women’s side in 32 years to score more than 80 points in 40 minutes. Aine hit 10 points in a four minute spell and had 18 overall to be top scorer for her side in an MVP winning performance. BACK TO LEAGUE ACTION THIS WEEKEND: With none of the counties National League sides making the Cup finals weekend they are all looking forward to getting back on the court this weekend. Team Garvey’s are in 5th place as the battle for a top 6 playoff spot continues, and they are looking for their 7th win in 13 games. They will be looking to bounce back from the defeat to Team Den Joes American Style as they head North. With Liam Culloty now in the hot seat they take on 4th placed Ulster Rockets in Methodist College at 5pm this Saturday.
