Tralee Mourns the passing of a great man... Ted Moynihan... Rest in Peace, Ted It is with a deep sense of heartfelt sadness that the Kerry Hospice Foundation announces the passing of our founder member and chairman Ted Moynihan, the 2017 Kerry Person of the Year. Ted passed away on Thursday morning in the tender care of staff at the new Palliative Care In Patient Unit at University Hospital Kerry in the presence of his heartbroken, loving and deeply caring family. Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 1983 and again in 2015, Ted Moynihan from Marian Park, Tralee had been the motivation behind the formation of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Ted also co – ordinated the establishment of more than 20 branches of the Kerry Hospice Foundation, 18 branches are still in existence today. Born in Blennerville, Ted was employed initially at the Tralee Boot Factory for nine years before the factory was gutted by fire in 1959. He subsequently took up employment during the construction of the Castelrosse Hotel in Killarney and also worked as a bus conductor with CIE from 1960 to 1963. He later worked as a driver for Kerry Petroleum servicing the South Kerry route. From 1982 to 1987, he worked with Jason Products in Tralee and was employed with the US textile company, Klopman in Tralee from 1987 to 1997. Ted was a dedicated and loyal member of the FCA for more than 43 years reaching the rank of Sergeant Major. He married Breda Foley from Marian Park, Tralee in 1964
and the couple have two sons, Teddy and Simon and four beautiful grandchildren Chloe, Jade, Simon and Blathnaid. In February 1990, a conference held in Ballymullen Army Barracks in Tralee announced that the 15th Battalion of the F.C.A. was to undertake a 150 mile sponsored walk, that included the Ring of Kerry, with the proceeds going to Baile Mhuire Tralee and the Kerry Cancer Support Group. This prompted Ted to establish a Hospice movement in Kerry, along with Dr. Tom McCormack F.R.C.S.I. at Tralee General Hospital. Ted was deeply honoured and privileged to have been the Chairman of the Tralee Branch of Kerry Hospice for the past 28 years. He also served as the Kerry Hospice Foundation chairman for 25 years. Thanks to the motivation, leadership and tireless work of Ted Moynihan, the hospice volunteers have raised more than €11 million in 25 years. The Kerry Hospice Foundation works in close collaboration with the HSE South to develop the Palliative Care Services in Kerry. It first started with the Community Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialists team (known then as the Home Care team) 25 years ago, providing hospice beds in Community Hospitals, the Palliative Day Care Unit in 2007 and now the state of the art 15 bed In Patient Unit that opened in December 2017 . The capital cost of the development of the In Patient Unit, €6.2 million, was fully funded by Kerry Hospice with a commitment for significant
financial support from the Kerry Hospice Foundation amounting to €400,000 per year for a period of 5 years towards the on going operational costs of the Unit. Ted Moynihan has been heavily involved in the annual Hospice Coffee Morning and Sunflower Day for the past twenty years. He organised the first Good Friday Hospice Walk in 1998 and this is now one of the largest events of its kind in Kerry. Among the many accolades bestowed to this proud Blennerville man was the 2010 All Ireland Volunteer Award, a Civic Reception from Tralee Town Council and he was Grand Marshall of the Tralee St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2011. He was also accorded a civic reception from the members of the Tralee Municipal District on the 9th of May 2016. A dedicated community volunteer, Ted has been involved in all aspects of community life. He was actively involved in the Tralee Footwear and F.C.A. Basketball teams in the 1950’s, Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club, Tralee Light Opera

Society in the late 1950’s and stage manager for ‘Showboat’ which starred the late Jack Cruise. He was Chairman of Marian Park Residents Association in late 1960’s and also chairman of Marian Park Community Games. In1970’s, he was involved with Pro Celtic Basketball Club and served as secretary of the Kerry County Basketball Board and president of the Munster Basketball Board from 1978 to 1979. Ted was a founding member of Tralee Bay Sea Angling Club. The Kerry Hospice Foundation is a team of ordinary people doing extraordinary work inspired by a true gentleman and leader in Ted Moynihan. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his loving wife Breda, who loaned Ted to the Kerry Hospice Foundation for 28 years, his sons Teddy and Simon, his four wonderful grandchildren Chloe, Jade, Simon and Blathnaid and extended family. LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Thomas and Edna are separating. They have two children. There is no hope of getting back together and they have tried relationship counseling. They are anxious to make the separation as smooth and easy as possible to minimize conflict for the sake of the children. They have heard of mediation but are wondering what it involves. Mediation is an excellent way to resolve conflict and is particularly useful in family law situations. There is a government funded medication service, which has offices countrywide, but in Kerry this service is offered through the Mediation Service at Unit 2, Market Place, Maine Street, Tralee, Co. Kerry -Phone: (066) 718 6100 Mediation is a method of resolving conflict where the parties to the dispute sit down with a third party mediator who helps the parties look at the issues in dispute between them and help them to come to a resolution on the issues. The mediator is completely neutral in this situation. Both parties have to be present and engage and it is a confidential and voluntary process. The whole idea is to help the parties themselves resolve the conflict and come to an agreement. The mediator creates an environment in which this can happen. It acknowledges the reality of a separation and helps the parties to look into the future and work out how best to orchestrate this for the whole family. The power is with the parties themselves rather than a resolution imposed by a third party e.g. a judge or an arbitrator. It is particularly well suited to family law disputes where a holistic fair solution is needed for the whole family and helps the parties find this solution in relation to resolving issues around Parenting the children Financial supportThe Family Home, Property and financial issues and Pensions It is a process of good faith and full disclosure. The mediation process can be quicker and cheaper than going to court. As it involves an agreed solution it is more likely that the parties will be happier to engage with this solution rather than an imposed solution. Both parties would take the agreement to their solicitors where it would be put into a legal format. Mediation can last 2-8 sessions of one hour each and may involve a meeting with the children to discuss family arrangements. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tralee Credit Union turns 50 this Sunday! And you’re invited! Sunday is exactly 50 years to the date it first opened its doors to members on Sunday 18th February 1968 at the T.C.L.S. Building in Day Place, Tralee, beside the Dominican Church. Rev C.D. O’Riordan, Prior, Holy Cross instigated the formation of a Study Group to examine the concept, formation and running of a credit union. Members of the study group were Denis Foley, Sean Moriarty, Tommy Quinlan, Paddy Dillane, Geoffrey O’Donoghue, Rev C.D. O’Riordan, Lauri Healy, John Malone, John Ryan and Tony Meade. They set up the credit union to give everyone throughout Tralee access to credit. They had studied hard the concept of the credit union ethos and values that members savings form the common pool of funds that allows members to borrow. In 1968, these ten men pooled together £50 of their own money which was used as the starting capital needed to form the credit union and 4

Medical Matters DR. KEVIN RYLE TALKS ABOUT ASTHMA Asthma is a condition that effects almost 500,000 people in Ireland. Narrowing of the small airways in the lungs makes it difficult for air to get in and out of the lungs when you breathe, leading to the typical symptoms of cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Asthma can affect people of all ages but is most commonly seen in children. It is possible however to develop asthma as an adult. While it is still not clear what causes asthma it is well known that the condition can be triggered and/or worsened in some people by cold air, exercise, cigarette smoke, air pollutants, chest infections, animal hair, dust mites, pollen and others. A family history of asthma, allergies or eczema increases your likelihood of developing the condition. To diagnose asthma your G.P. will consider your pattern of symptoms, your family history and your own personal history of allergies, hay fever, eczema, etc.
Examination of your lungs will be carried out and you may require lung function tests (spirometry). Diagnosis can be more difficult in children, especially in those under the age of 2 when other conditions can mimic asthma. The goal of treatment is to control the condition and prevent flare-ups or asthma attacks. If triggers are identified these should, if possible, be avoided. Children with asthma should not be exposed to cigarette smoke and similarly adults with asthma should not smoke. Reliever inhalers work quickly when taken and are used to provide rapid relief of symptoms. Preventer inhalers are a very important part of asthma treatment and, when taken regularly every day help to keep the condition under control and prevent symptoms from occurring. Everyone (including children) with asthma should get the flu vaccine every year. If you think your child, or indeed you yourself may have asthma you should speak with your G.P..

She said: “The training is intense and long but leaves you ready to start listening and hopefully help someone who at that time needs to talk. Samaritans is a unique listening service in that we don’t give advice, we listen and do so for as long as the caller needs to talk. The power of this can only be fully appreciated when you start your journey in the Ops room taking calls and answering texts and emails. “I have learnt so many new skills and will continue to do so as a Samaritan. Once you finish your training that is just the start of your journey.” As well as supporting people emotionally, Samaritans volunteers undertake outreach in the community, fundraise, and take on administrative roles, all of which are vital to ensure that the service remains available round the clock, every day of the

Our kitchen is quite small and with an expanding family we could do with some extra space in this room. What would you advise? Joanne, Ardfert There are a number of ways to achieve the right space. You could consider combining your existing kitchen space with an adjacent room. Alternatively, an extension might be the easiest way to achieve additional space without affecting the whole house. Adequate space is a must have for modern living. If your proposal is developed right, it will improve traffic flow, light-levels and the overall comfort of the space. It will make cooking a pleasure and not feel like a chore. It is quite possible that the size of extension that you require might be planning exempt. It would need to be to the rear of the house and there are other criteria that need to be fulfilled too. (Always check with your local planning office or architectural design professional). If the extension is considered planning exempt, it could be constructed within a matter of weeks. Depending on the style of extension (traditional / contemporary), this will influence your decoration.
Some tips for your kitchen extension:
• By using a peninsula or breakfast bar, this will help define your space. • The larger the extension, the more multi-functional it will be, in that different zones can be created that will allow for cooking, dining and relaxing. • The layout of your kitchen is extremely important. The basics of every kitchen are a work triangle (fridge, oven/hob and sink). Pantry’s / larders are becoming more common. An island is a perfect break between spaces and can double as both a work and dining space.

What is Geo-blocking ?
So you sit down in front of your computer to catch the latest episode of Doctor Who directly from BBC’s iPlayer, and you are greeted by an error message informing you that the program will play only in the UK. So why are you blocked? How does the BBC website know you are not in the UK? Geoblocking is the system used to limit your access to the internet, based on your geographic location. The way it works is that each computer has a unique IP address (e.g 172.001.34.3) IP addresses are allocated in blocks to internet service providers (ISPs) who in turn allocate them to customers. Typically the IP address of your computer has no special significance. However, an IP address can be used to determine a computer’s geographical location with reasonable accuracy. So how do you bypass this,? you use a VPN this allows you to connect to a server in the UK or US which enable to get around this issue. I use Hola! It is simple to install, configure and use. It utilises a more robust peer-to-peer network to allow the end user access to the BBC and other websites.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018 Stews are the ultimate cold-weather comfort food. Whether you prefer something classic, like a hearty beef stew in red wine sauce, or something lighter
STEW INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1/2 cup plain flour Salt and freshly ground pepper 4 pounds boneless lamb shoulder or top round, cut into 2-inch cubes 1/2 cup olive oil 2 cups dry red wine2wine2 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 4 cups chicken stock 2 tablespoons chopped tarragon 1 pound baby carrots, peeled 1 pound baby parsnips, peeled 1 pound small baby potatoes 1/2 pound baby turnips, halved 8 baby fennel bulbs, trimmed, fronds reserved and chopped shallot, minced 2 tablespoons minced parsley
METHOD Step 1 Preheat the oven . Put the flour in a large bowl and season generously with salt and pepper. Add the lamb cubes in 4 batches, tossing to coat thoroughly. Step 2 In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil until shimmering. Add one-fourth of the lamb cubes and cook over moderately high heat until browned, about 6 minutes; transfer to a plate. Brown the remaining floured lamb in 3 batches, adding 2 tablespoons of oil to the pot per batch. Reduce the heat if the casserole bottom darkens too much. Step 3 Return all of the lamb to the casserole. Add the wine and vinegar and bring to a boil. Add the stock and tarragon and return to a boil. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the casserole and braise the stew in the oven for about 1 hour, or until the meat is nearly tender. Step 4 Add the carrots, parsnips, potatoes, turnips, fennel and shallot to the lamb stew. Season with salt and pepper and bring to a boil, stirring to distribute the vegetables. Cover the casserole, return it to the oven and cook until the meat and vegetables are tender, about 1 hour longer. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the parsley Recipes by and fennel fronds and serve the stew in deep bowls.

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! This week I was going to talk about some cheaper makeup favourites of mine, but I realised that next week is the last Friday of February which means it will be my ‘February Favourites’ post. So I’ll leave that til next week. I didn’t do a Valentine’s post last week, but I’m going to touch on it this week. This week I’m going to be helping out all you gals who want make TODAY all about YOU. As The Pussycat Dolls once said, “I Don’t Need A Man To Make Me Feel Good”. There’s plenty of ways you can enjoy life without having ‘that someone special’.
10 WAYS TO TREAT YOURSELF! 1. BUY YOURSELF SOMETHING: You don’t need to spend money on anyone else. This is your day. Spoil yourself. Get that high end bronzer you’ve been ogling the past 2 months, (Benefit Hoola Bronzer is fab!), get yourself that book you’ve been dying to read, splurge on those shoes that nearly have a hole in them from you staring in at them from outside the shop window. BUY YOURSELF SOMETHING! 2. GET A WASH & BLOW-DRY: Don’t lie, having your hair blow dried professionally feels amazing. When your hair feels great, you feel great. Who doesn’t love a good hair day? A wash & blow dry from a hair salon costs in and around €20, you’re worth it. 3. PAINT YOUR NAILS: I don’t know about you but when my nails are painted or when I’ve got my gels on, I just feel a bit more together and on top of things. It has me all like ‘Hey world, I’m ready for anything today’! So give those tips a fresh coat or if you’re like me and can’t paint your nails for love nor money, go get shellacs, gels, whatever you please! 4. WEAR MATCHING UNDERWEAR: Just because you’ve no plans for anyone to see said underwear, doesn’t say you can’t do it for yourself. We all know and love that feeling of fabulosity when our underwear matches.
5. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR GIRLS: As Carrie Bradshaw once said, “Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with.” Plan a fun night in with takeaway and wine or a night out on the town with even more wine. Either way you’re guaranteed laughter, fun and maybe a little bit of tears over horrible exes! 6. DRESS UP: If you are going to head out, get your glad rags on. Wear the high heels that make your legs go on for days and that dress you have in your wardrobe that you’ve been saving, look like a million dollars, feel like a million dollars! 7. DRESS DOWN: On the flip side, if you’re staying in dress down and cosy. Fluffy socks, comfy clothes and hair on top of the head. You know you’re fabulous anyway. 8. HOME TREATMENTS: Whip out the face mask, foot cream, hair mask & other pamper goodies and turn your home into a spa. Tonight it’s all about you.
So that’s it for this week! Hope you all enjoyed this week’s light hearted post! Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! 9. HEAD TO FIFTY FREED: In case you forgot (you know you didn’t don’t lie), Fifty Shades Freed is out in cinema. I could think of worse things to do than stare at Jamie Dornan half naked for 2hrs. 10. IF ALL ELSE FAILS… At least all the Valentines chocolate is reduced, and we all know it tastes so much better when it’s half price!

FITNESS!
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK AND ENJOYED LAST WEEK’S POST ABOUT GETTING UP EARLY. Still focusing on the self improvement topic, this week I’m going to share some of the books that I am reading at the moment
THE BIRTHDAY CUT
This week I have started my yearly ‘Birthday Cut’, I literally do a cut before my birthday every year. So this year I said I’d keep you all updated on it! WHAT IS A CUT? To be “cutting” you need to be purposely and thoughtfully eating less calories than your maintenance (the amount of calories your body needs to stay the same). If you just eat a calorie deficit without resistance training and only cardio training you may lose more muscle than intended. For most people, holding onto hard earned muscle when cutting is paramount. Muscle is more metabolic than other tissue (fat included). It is also slow and takes time and effort to build, so don’t give it up easily. When cutting, do it properly! The last time I did a proper consistent cut was before I went to Thailand last summer, so I feel ready to start another cut again to lean out more. By cut I do not mean eating very low calories or cutting out carbs!! I mean I will be SLOWLY cutting my calories over the next 9 weeks.
The Chimp Paradox by Dr Steve Peters
My main goal for this cut is to be consistent. As I have said before, consistency is absolutely key! I don’t have a set ‘weight loss goal’ or anything like that in mind, I just want to see consistent progress over time, that’s it!
If you’re looking to pick up a new non fiction book, I highly recommend either of these three.
MEASUREMENTS I’ve decided every week I will update you on my measurements from Week 1 til now. WEEK 1: START Bust: 34 inches Hips: 44 inches Thighs: 28 inches Waist: 31.5 inches
CRUSHING IT! By Gary Vaynerchuk
Life Changing Books.
WEEK 4: TODAY Bust: 34 inches Hips: 40 inches (-4 inches) Thighs: 27.5 inches (-.5 inch) Waist: 30.5 inches (-1 inch)
I really focus on measurements rather than the scales, as being a woman the scales can fluctuate SO much and can be inaccurate when it comes to progress. I do weigh myself daily and take a weekly average from that but I don’t focus on the number.
Relentless by Tim S Grover

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: TREATMENT ABROAD SCHEME Question I know that medical treatments available in Ireland can be accessed in other EU countries instead. What if I need a treatment that is not available in Ireland? Answer If you are entitled to public health services that are available in Ireland, you can access these services in the European Economic Area (EEA) and be repaid the cost under the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive. If you are a public patient and need treatment that is not available to you in Ireland, you may be able to use the Treatment Abroad Scheme to get the treatment in another country in the EEA, or in Switzerland. The Scheme may provide help with your travel fare and, in some cases, the fare for a travelling companion. You must be referred for treatment abroad by an Irishbased consultant who is treating you as a public patient. You cannot refer yourself or be referred by a GP. You and the consultant complete an application form and include a copy of your referral letter. Your application must be approved by the Health Service Executive (HSE) before you travel or start treatment abroad. You usually get a decision on your application within 15 to 20 working days. If your application is approved, the HSE will issue a form called E112. This authorises treatment abroad so that you do not have to make any payment to the healthcare provider. The treatment you have abroad must be in public healthcare under a registered medical practitioner. It must be in a recognised hospital or other institution that accepts the form E112. If you don’t have the form when you attend at your appointment, you may be charged and not be refunded. Any treatments or consultations that are not pre-approved will not be covered. The Ombudsman has produced a report that suggests improvements to the application and appeals process. It recommends that, by the end of February 2018, the HSE produce a plan and schedule for making the suggested changes. To apply for the scheme, contact the Treatment Abroad Scheme Office for an application form. You can get the contact details for your area by calling the HSE Infoline on the Callsave number 1850 24 1850 or online at hse. ie/treatmentabroad. IT’S ONLY A JOKE TWO PRIESTS WERE PLAYING GOLF...
Father Bob hit his ball into the woods on his first swing, “Damn it! That totally missed!” he cursed. “You shouldn’t curse Father Bob!” said Father Michael “Or god might punish you!” Father Bob apologized and they went on playing. On his next swing, Father Bob hit his ball into the sand pit. “Damn it! That totally missed!” he cursed again. Again, Father Michael warned, “Do not utter such words Father Bob, lest god punishes you for it!” Father Bob apologized again and they continued playing. On his third swing, Father Bob hit his ball into the pond. “Damn it! That totally missed!” cursed Father Bob once again. Before Father Michael could say anything, a ominous dark cloud suddenly gathered out of the blue sky and a vicious lightning came down and stroke Father Michael, killing him instantly. Father Bob was completely stunned, before he could understand what was happening in front of him, he heard a thunderous deep voice coming from the sky - “Damn it! That totally missed!”
A MAN WAKES UP AFTER A HEAVY NIGHT OF DRINKING TO HIS WIFE HAPPILY COOKING BREAKFAST.
Confused, he approaches his daughter for an explanation of last night when he arrived home. “You kicked in the door when you couldn’t get your key in the lock, fell through the table and broke it, and wetyour pants.” “ OMG ! So then why the hell is she in such a good mood?” “When she tried to take your pants off to 30

A BRIT, A FRENCHMAN AND A SOVIET ARE ASKED WHAT NATIONALITY ADAM AND EVE WERE.
The Brit exclaims “They must have been British! Look at how gentlemanly Adam behaved towards Eve. He must have been an Englishman.” “Outrageous!” Says the Frenchman. “They must have been French. Look at the love that they exhibited towards each other! Only the French can love like that.” The Soviet chuckles and says “You’re both wrong. They must have been Soviet; they had no clothes, no food, and someone in charge was telling them they were in paradise”.
A RUSSIAN WOMAN WROTE TO HER HUSBAND IN THE GULAG:
Vladimir, my love, * I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant the potato garden this year. I’m just too weak* to be digging up a garden plot. If only you were here, my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me. - Love Maria A few days later, she received a letter from her husband: Dearest Maria, Not for nothing, but don’t dig up that garden. That’s where I buried the gold bars! Love, Vlad At 4 a.m. the next morning, KGB agents arrived at the old house and dug up the entire area. However, they didn’t find any gold, so they eventually gave up and left. That same day, Maria received another letter from her husband. Dear Maria, Go ahead and plant the potatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances. Love, Vlad

TORQUING CARS! TOYOTA TO BRING ITS GLOBAL BANK TO IRELAND
The car giant Toyota has introduced its own finance house to the Irish market, offering loans and finance deals on new and used vehicles through its dealer network. Toyota Financial Services Ireland, which will begin with 22 staff, has an initial capitalisation of more than €20 million. It expects total loans to grow to more than €350 million within five years. With close to 50 per cent of Toyota’s customers in the Republic availing of some form of finance, the new banking arm will offer products such as personal contract plan, or PCP, deals and hire-purchase agreements. It expects about 4,000 new and used contracts to be written in the first year, with a total value of €70 million. According to Toyota Ireland’s chief executive, Steve Tormey, rates on PCP deals start at 2.9 per cent but average 3.9 per cent, putting the company “in a very competitive position relative to both local and captive banks”. Because Toyota Financial Services guarantees the future residual values of the car – and not the dealer, as with other banks – we see the guaranteed value for a hybrid after three years is working out at 43 per cent, whereas we’ve put it down to 37 per cent for a diesel. That’s because we have to be sure that in three years’ time we’re happy with the resale price we can get for that car.” The bank estimates petrol models’ future value at 39 per cent. The car company’s in-house bank already operates in more than 30 countries and has global assets of €160 billion. Loans will be available for all new Toyota and Lexus models, including commercial vehicles, as well as used cars from other brands on sale from Toyota dealers. New-car sales figures released earlier this week show Toyota is the bestselling car brand in Ireland so far in 2018.(Irish Times motoring)
SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO ?
I drive a 151 Honda Civic 1.6 diesel, bought new, 120k on the clock; 40k/45k per year, three-quarters motorway driving; 65mpg from car, no children at the moment. My wife has the main family car. Should I drive my car into ground (Honda are bullet-proof) or should I update my car? It’s only used as a commuter car so if I update I’m open to selling it privately or trade in with a dealer. Any model or size car will do as long as it’s reliable and good economically. I don’t want to be paying out serious money to just put up 40k a year. Aidan and Eddie Say ..... Sorry to be blunt but 45k a year is serious mileage and our instinct is for you to change. You are doing phenomenally on MPG so the advice is, trade in against the newly arrived 1.6-litre diesel Civic. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix. (Indo Motoring )

STING IN THE TALE? As replacement tyres for my 2007 Volvo XC70 AWD, would the new Michelin Cross Climate Plus have an advantage over the (original equipment) Pirelli Scorpion M+S? The latest Pirellis continue to perform well, but the Michelins seem to be getting very good reviews. GB The matter might be decided by what is available in the right size. Michelin Cross Climates score with their compliance, quietness, good steering feel and performance in mud, as well as their cold weather virtues.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY? Heartfelt Cardio Screening is coming to your area soon, with the revolutionary BPro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The BPro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately
and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a Healthstats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought
back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people e.g. Sports Clubs, Business Screening etc.

Jimmy from Oakpark, Tralee hoping to go on a winning streak An active grandad from
Woodlands ,Tralee, is hoping to go on a Winning Streak this Saturday (17th February) after seeing his name being pulled out of the drum by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy, presenters of the National Lottery iconic game show on RTE One. The lucky Kerryman, Jimmy Kelly , is no stranger to a bit of fortune but is still surprised at the reaction of his friends, family and community in Woodlands in Tralee as Jimmy has been inundated with wellwishes since Saturday. He is taken aback at the kindness of people in sending him cards, text messages and calling to his house just to wish him good luck. When he saw his name come out he remained calm as he wanted to be sure that it was him and not some other Jimmy Kelly in Tralee but his delight 38

was confirmed when his full name and address flashed on screen at the end of the show. Jimmy has won the Lotto raffle number on two occasions, winning €300 each time and also won €17,000 on a local lotto back when he was working. He also gifted someone a scratch card who won €5,000 a few years ago so there is a lucky streak in Jimmy.
Jimmy has been married to Kathleen for the past 47 years and the couple have five adult children; one boy and four girls. They are Susan (44), Jeannette (43), Doreen (39), Karen (36) and Derek (34) and between them they have given Jimmy 11 grandchildren. Jimmy is quite the proud granddad and says that his army of grandchildren are the “icing on his cake”. With any winnings Jimmy plans to do a bit more travelling, something that he has been keen on since Friday 16th February 2018
retirement and plans to go to Prague in the Czech Republic with his wife Kathleen, as well as going to Greece in September to celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary. Jimmy is a keen golfer, playing at Killarney Golf and Fishing club and he is also a member of the clubs choir. He also loans his voice to the local church choir and loves to get out of the house walking, gardening and painting. A laid-back retirement is not an option for Jimmy, who ran the Dublin Marathon six times when he was younger.
The next episode of Winning Streak, will be broadcast next Saturday evening (17th February) at 8:20pm on RTÉ One, where presenters Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy will guide five players through the iconic show, which gives them the chance to win cash, cars and luxury holidays. One will get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to spin the Grand Prize Wheel with a maximum prize of €500,000.
All his children and six grandkids will be in the audience cheering him on on Saturday night in RTE. Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR SOCCER RULE MIGHT HAVE SEEN KERRY PLAY IN MONAGHAN: Anyone involved in sport and the organising of fixtures will know that things sometimes don’t always go to plan. This was unfortunately the case for all involved in Kerry’s double header away to Monaghan last weekend. It turned out to be a wasted journey but probably still a relatively enjoyable one according to reports. Hindsight is always 20/20 but it seems that the club in Monaghan did not believe that the pitch would take the two games due to the heavy rain, even before the snow. Everyone was very positive when the double headers were announced with the Ladies playing before the senior men’s games but the timing of the games was always a cause of concern. The Ladies game could probably have been called off sooner or moved to a neutral venue in the hope that at least one game would go ahead. While it was an expensive outing for the Kerry seniors costing around e7,000 according to estimates they can afford this or will probably be able to recoup the costs from headquarters. For the Ladies GAA it is probably more of an issue but hopefully they too will not be out of pocket for their wasted trip. Hopefully Kerry can get the two points when they head back to Monaghan this Sunday and with the way the League is shaping up 6 points will put them in a great position. There are concerns about the availability of some college players who have big Sigerson games this week. When the new League format was introduced these clashes were certainly not taken into consideration or if they were they were ignored. But looking forward how can games being called off at a late hour be avoided? One way would be to bring in the rule they have in soccer – if your pitch is not playable and you cannot find an alternative then the game reverts to the oppositions ground. If Monaghan knew this I am sure they would have found a suitable alternative. The other thing that grounds being used for county games should look at is investing in ground covers. Obviously underground heating is not a runner due to costs but
40
TRALEE ADVERTISER
covers should be affordable. Tennis and cricket have covers while builders will know that if they are preparing ground to pour concrete sometimes they need to cover big surfaces. If counties knew that they would have to travel if the game was called off I am sure these options would be investigated. Hurlers need a big game: While the Kerry senior footballers are in Monaghan the hurlers have a huge game in Newbridge when they face Kildare. Having lost to Carlow they will be looking to bounce back and should the need any further motivation they only have to remember their defeat to the Lilywhites in the 2014 Christy Ring Cup final. Their game also throws in at 2pm. PARNELL’S NEWS: There was a great turnout for the Academy players, the u6’s to u12s, with more than 60 players enjoyed a great training session. The Academy trains on Tuesdays at the Tralee Sports Complex and new members are always welcome for the 7 week Academy costing e2 per session. The u8’s gets the action underway at 6.45pm. Registration: Registration is now open for all sections of membership and can be done on-line. Gear in Stock: The club is working on its stock requirements for the coming season so if any mentors have excess from 2017 please let the Committee know. AUSTIN STACKS UNDERAGE NEWS: Once again there was a great turn out for the u6’s and u8’s Sunday morning football. The coaches are delighted with the effort these players are putting in. The training sessions continue this Sunday with the u6 Boys in Mouthawk Gym from 11am. All new members are welcome and if interested please contact any club members for full details. The u10 boys are gearing up for a trip to Monaleen in Limerick on March 19th. The u12’s train this Sunday as do the u14’s who were delighted with their trip to Nemo Rangers. Their County League begins on March 28th. The 16’s Central League will also begin soon. NA GAEIL HOPING FOR ALL IRELAND SCOR GLORY: This Saturday is D Day for Na

Gaeil’s Leihru team as they take to the All Ireland Scor na nOg Stage hoping to bring home the title. They are the only representative s from the Tralee District Board and everyone is behind them. Scor Sensior will be getting underway in the next few weeks so if you are interested in taking part please contact your club to see what sections they are entering. CAMOGIE CELEBRATE’S: On Friday night the Camogie community in Kerry gathered at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel to pay tribute to those players, both juvenile and senior, who brought so much glory to the county in 2017. Cathaoirleach Tom Meehan said it was a great honour to be associated with so many people who gave so much in the advancement of the sport in the county. He remarked that it was noteworthy that success was achieved at so many age levels from U14 to Senior and this boded well for the future of Kerry Camogie. Special Guest on the night was the legendary Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and he gave an inspiring speech in which he asked all players to adhere to the mantra of ‘Never Give Up.” He spoke about meeting players down through the years who had achieved great success but who also had experienced disappointment. He imparted the same advice to ‘Cailíní Camógaíochta’ as he had to those other players urging them to remember that there will always be competitions that have not been won yet! Medals were presented to U14, U15, Minor and Senior Kerry Teams and also to Clanmaurice Camogie Club. Tributes were paid to the Coaches and Mentors whose selfless efforts were key to garnering success at the various levels. It was also hoped that Kerry Camogie would go from strength in 2018 and that the sport would be developed in other areas of the county. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,12,27 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e6,200 with the draw in O’Dwyers Bar. Once again the Academy was a great success and in the u6’s Grace Costello was named the player of the week. The u8’s were also indoors with Blake Bowler getting
the nod as their Player of the Week. The u10’s and u12’s also continue to train at their usual times each week. Minors: The minors are putting in the hard work under manager Terry Boyle and will begin their Division 4 campaign this Saturday at 4pm away to Kilcummin. The Seniors continued their preparation for the up-coming County League with a challenge game against Castlegregory played in John Mitchels who the club thanks for hosting the game. They play Na Gaeil on the 18th. KERIN’S O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The seniors played their Coiste Tra Li Round 3 game in Connolly Park against Austin Stacks. The game was played in winter conditions with the Stacks taking a 0-08 to 0-03 at half time. They added on 3 points after half time to open the gap but the seniors made a comeback to close the gap to four points. But the Stacks pushed on and extended their lead before wrapping up the win with a late goal to take the points on a 1-12 to 0-09 score line. On the day Danny O’Sullivan, Ryan Carroll and John Ferguson were the best on the day. The seniors next game is this Friday night against Na Gaeil under lights at John Mitchels with a 9pm start time – is that the latest kick off time in Kerry football? Minors: The Minors opening game of the Tralee Town League was postponed with their next game being set for the Saturday at 4pm. In this Division 3A game throw in away to Churchill will be at 4pm. The underage girls teams are training ahead of the start of their League s and will welcome any new members interested in playing with the club. Date for the Diary: After the huge success of last year this year’s Strictly Club Dancing takes place on Friday March 16th starting at 8pm. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,8,25 and 27 and the next Jackpot will be e2,700. BALLYMAC NEWS: 2018 Membership – Membership is now open and with the new EU Legislation coming into effect all members must have signed the proper forms. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn in Glenduff Manor 6,12,14 and 21 and the next jackpot will be e3,400. The Academy restarts on Sunday March 11th at 11.15 and is open to all boys and girls living in the Parish born in 2008 and younger. GAA Coaching Development Officer Michael Quirke will make the first of 6 visits to the club on February 27th at 7.30pm with all club coaches recommended to attend. The Minors get their Division 3B campaign underway this weekend with an away trip to Glenflesk. Courses: There are a number of Coaching Workshops and Referee

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Introductory courses taking place in the coming week. Please contact you club if you are interested in attending any of he courses. STAR FIRES WARRIORS TO THE TOP OF THE SUPERLEAGUE: Having been on top of the table for a brief period a week earlier Garvey’s Tralee Warriors eight SuperLeague in a row puts them back at the summit again. This was came away in Dublin where the defeated Eanna BC 78-75. With Marian loosing on the night Kieran Donaghy’s coolness from the free throw line at clutch time was vital for the Warriors win. It sets things up wonderfully for this weekend clash with Marian in Dublin with a win for either side putting them in pole position to finish top of the SuperLeague. Garvey’s took control from early on with scores from, Pemberton, O’Hanlon and Donaghy, who would end with 25 points, and by the end of the first ten minutes they were 13 a head 28-15. Both sides went basket for basket early in the second quarter as Garvey’s maintained their lead but a scoring run by the home side before the half time break had the lead down to 6 49-43. Mid-way through the third quarter and a run of 9 points saw Eanna taking the lead but a technical foul called on them halted their momentum. It allowed Pemberton to make the free throw and from the restart Donaghy made it a three point turnaround as the Warriors took a narrow 54-61 lead into the final quarter. Donaghy’s and Pemberton hit two big three’s as the Warriors opened a seven point lead but again Eanna closed the gap to set up a grand stand finish. Following a technical on Donaghy the gap was just down to 4 with 4 minutes left. In a frantic finale to the contest Donaghy was again on the mark to see the Tralee side lead 75-71 but Reeves and Conor White fired into to level the game. However just when it looked like Éanna would drive on to win, two defensive lapses allowed Donaghy four free shots in quick succession and he made three to wrap up their 8th win in a row. Donaghy ended with25 points followed by Pemberton on 18 with Darragh O’Hanlon and Eoin Quigley ending on 9 points each. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Cup finals weekend OF the KABB was another exciting one for the sport and a very successful one for St Brendan’s. Having won the Academy Cup previously the club took three more titles this weekend. The Boys u16’s Division 3 side defeated TK Cougars 39-32 to win the Plate. The u16 Division 1 side beat a team from the same club 63-39 in the Cup final while the Senior Men’s Division 2 side won their Cup final beating local rivals Tralee Tigers 68-43. The Senior Men were unlucky to go down to St Mary’s in their final 7672. The club was delighted to reach 7 Cup finals and win 4 and with
a number of League titles still to be decided it will be another very good year for St Brendan’s. In the Lee Strand Boys u12 Division 1 St Brendan’s defeated KCYMS 36-17. GOOD WIN IN JUNIOR LEAGUE FOR TRALEE: In rugby’s Munster Junior League Division 3 Tralee enjoyed an important 25-7 point win over Bantry Bay at O’Dowd Park. Tralee are on a great run at the moment winning five in a row in all competitions. A Fearghail O’Nuallain converted by Jack Quinn who also scored with a penalty gave the home side a 10-7 half time lead. the Last 8. The game kicks off at 2pm. Following that at 2pm Tralee Dynamos 17’s have their big game in the FAI U17 Cup Last 16’s. Dynamos biggest win in this competition came when they defeated Askeaton but this will be a step up from that game. However Dynamos always go into these big games very well prepared so hopefully they can progress. Both sides go into their big games on the back of good performances locally. In the u17’s Tralee Dynamos defeated Ballyhar Dynamos while in Youths the Park drew with Castleisland. Elsewhere in the Denny League’s Mitchels Avenue were 4-2 winners over AC Athletic in Denny Premier B. DYNAMOS NEWS: The club’s youngest players enjoyed another good session at the Academy with all the coaches very impressed by the work they are putting in. The Academy continues at the IT Astro this from 6 to 7pm. The next age up the 11’s had all three sides in action and all enjoyed their games with a number of good performances in their wins by the likes of Mollie Duggan, Mathew Rogers, Adam Evans, Cody O’Sullivan, Aaron Horgan, Nick Lacey and Odhran Foley. The 15’s had a good away win in Listowel in the Killarney Plaza Kerry Schoolboys League with Sean Dillane scoring from the penalty spot and Conall Clifford scoring late on to secure the points. Well done also to Sean Horan who was named in the League’s Team of the Week. Dynamos wish The Park and Camp Juniors the best of luck in their National Cup games this weekend. PARK LIFE: Ahead of their big weekend this weekend the Park teams enjoyed some good results last weekend in the VITHIT Schoolboys League. The 13’s won away at Killarney Athletic while the 14’s won at home to Listowel Celtic. The 11’s were in action when they took on Fenit in the Astro turf. The snow did not bother these young players who are back in training this week. The B’s squad put up a good performance against neighbours Tralee Dynamos and will also be back training this week. Oisin Breen was the clubs player of the match. Sean O’Connor got his reward for another good performance with the 14’s by making the League Team of the Week.
