GAA stars line out for cancer support charity’s Ring of Kerry Cycle recruitment drive

Kerry GAA stars Diarmuid O’Connor and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh traded their football boots for bicycles on Wednesday afternoon as they helped local cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, kickstart their recruitment campaign for this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle (ROKCC). Recovery Haven has been chosen as a Tier Two beneficiary of the renowned charity cycle which takes place on Saturday July 6th - and are now calling on the public to sign up on their behalf. The charity was thrilled to accept an invitation from Ballygarry Estate Hotel & Spa owners to use their beautiful location as the backdrop to launch their recruitment drive, with ROKCC PRO Cathal Walshe and GAA stars Diarmuid and Louise taking time out of their busy schedules to lend their support.

Recovery Haven PR & Marketing officer, Marisa Reidy, said that while several people have already signed up to cycle for the charity since registration opened, they really want to spread the word about the charity’s involvement again this year and explain just how much people’ s support means to their service users.

“We are so thrilled that people have already signed up to cycle for Recovery Haven – but it’s really wonderful to see Diarmuid, Louise and Cathal here with us to help us spread the word even further,” she said.

“The main aim of this campaign is to show people that when they sign up to cycle for Recovery Haven, all their fundraising efforts will come directly to us, allowing us to continue to offer free supports to those dealing with cancer.

“The feedback from clients is truly touching and quite emotionalfrom people saying that Recovery Haven was their light at the end of a very dark tunnel; that we helped them to develop a resilience they never imagined; to someone who described Recovery Haven as their lifeline when they were sinking.

“This is so wonderful to hear, so what we want to stress is that those signing up for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in aid of Recovery Haven are contributing directly to that. It’s our amazing supporters who allow us to make that difference and that is what makes this event so, so special.”

For those interested in signing up for this year’s cycle in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry, all you have to do so is: Log onto https://www. ringofkerrycycle.ie Choose ‘Register Now’ Click ‘Register for Ring of Kerry Charity Fund’

Choose Recovery Haven Kerry from the drop down menu.

And this year, everyone who registers to cycle for us can also set up their own idonate page to raise even more funds for our charity..

Minister Foley welcomes 600 construction jobs as Astellas’ €330 million facility breaks ground!

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley, has welcomed the start of construction of Astellas’ €330 million state-of-the-art facility at Kerry Technology Park, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

The new manufacturing facility is set to create significant employment opportunities in the area, including 600 construction jobs and 100 highly specialised roles in engineering, science, and technology. The facility is planned to be operational by 2028.

Minister Foley said: “As a proud Kerrywoman and Tralee native, I am pleased to see the further development of Astellas which represents the single biggest investment in Tralee town and the county as a whole for many years. This is a phenomenal vote of confidence by Astellas in Kerry. It is, in many respects, a game changer for the entire south west region. I am delighted that we are now marking the ‘groundbreaking’ stage of this exciting development. I wish to

thank Astellas for its vision, ambition and confidence in Tralee and county Kerry and I look forward to the project developing at pace.”

Minister Foley this week attended a ground-breaking ceremony at the site with Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Simon Coveney, IDA CEO Michael Lohan, representatives of Kerry County Council, project partners and senior Astellas executives.

The new facility has been designed with sustainability at its core, will accelerate the expansion of Astellas’ in-house production capabilities and ensure a stable supply of high-quality medicines to patients around the world.

On an environmental level, the building will fall in line with Astellas’ ambitious sustainability values and targets, incorporating the highest national and international best practice in energy and environmental design. As a result, this project aims to cut water use

by approximately half, reduce operational energy intensity by more than one-third, and produce zero waste to landfill (compared with LEED®️ baseline). These measures along with onsite renewable technology including solar PV panels and biomass boiler underpin Astellas’

efforts in the mitigation of climate change.

Astellas recently announced further investment in Kerry, taking over the lease of the Advanced Technology Building, also at Kerry Technology Park.

Arts Act Grants & Artist Bursaries Awarded

The Kerry County Council Arts Office saw significant interest in their annual funding call for 2024, receiving a total of 42 Arts Act Grant applications and 56 Artist Bursary applications during the open period from November 30th, 2023, to January 18th, 2024.

The Arts Act Grant supports arts festivals, events, projects, and venues in Kerry, while the Artist Bursaries benefit individual artists across various art forms, including

those based in the county and schools seeking artist engagement. The Bursaries cover categories such as Creative Work Development, Further Arts Education, Artist Retreat, Artist in Schools, and the Eamon Kelly Bursary (specifically for artists in the Killarney Municipal District).

An independent adjudication panel was highly impressed with the quality of the applications, resulting in the awarding of 27

Arts Act Grants totaling €35,000 and 26 Artist Bursaries amounting to €20,800. Recipients included a diverse range of projects and organizations such as Listowel Visual Artists Collective, Ceardlann Scríbhneoireachta Gaeilge, and Harp Day Kerry 2024.

The supported artists represent various disciplines including literature, visual art, theatre, film, music, and opera, with a distribution across different municipal districts.

Schools benefiting from the funding include St. Brendan’s College, Firies N.S., Lyreacrompane N.S., and Scoil Realt na Mara.

These grants and bursaries, funded by Kerry County Council, contribute to the implementation of the Kerry Arts Strategy, facilitating arts delivery, engagement, and development throughout the county.

Pint Price Poised to Peak !

The Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) has voiced concern over Diageo’s decision to raise the price of a pint, calling it a significant blow to an already struggling pub trade. Following a 12-cent increase in February 2023, Diageo’s recent 6-cent hike exacerbates financial pressures for publicans nationwide. VFI CEO, Pat Crotty, emphasized the severity of the situation, citing rising costs such as minimum wage, sick days, and impending pension schemes. These cumulative pressures endanger the viability of pubs across Ireland. Crotty urged the government to provide meaningful support beyond the Increased Cost of Doing Business grant, suggesting measures like excise reduction, reinstating the 9% VAT rate for food-serving pubs, and lowering employer’s PRSI.

Acknowledging the strain on customers amidst a cost of living crisis, Crotty noted that passing on price increases is often unavoidable for publicans. However, the VFI appealed to Diageo to refrain from further price hikes in 2024. In conclusion, the VFI called for governmental intervention and public support to safeguard the future of local pubs during these challenging times. Price changes will come into effect from 15th April

KERINS O RAHILLYS NOTES

Seniors:

In a turnover-heavy game, we fell to Laune Rangers with a 2-11 to 1-08 score in our league opener at Strand Road. Despite a valiant effort, turnovers plagued our performance, allowing Laune Rangers to capitalize and secure the win. Notable performances came from Chucky and Eoin Clifford, but it wasn’t enough to overcome our turnovers and deficits. We commend Laune Rangers for their cohesive play and look forward to bouncing back in our next match against Kilcummin.

Our Juvenile Academy continued with great turnout and enthusiasm at Tralee Sports Complex. We welcome new members and encourage everyone to join us for our next session on Sunday, March 31st. Remember, bringing a friend could win you both a full Kerins O’Rahillys Kit and Football.

Despite challenging weather conditions, our minors put in a commendable effort in their recent league match against NA Fianna. While the result didn’t go our way, we applaud the team’s resilience and determination. Man of the Match honors go to Breandàn Meehan for his standout performance.

Our U16 Girls kicked off the season with strong training sessions and a successful match against Finuge/ St. Sennens. Captained by Fiadh McCarthy, the team showcased their hard work and dedication, securing a well-deserved victory.

Congratulations to Declan and the Kerry ladies team on their recent success, qualifying for the National league final.
