GOOD NEWS ONLY! In memoriam Valentine Allister
Late of Maple Сourt, Tralee (Originally of Caherina) | 11 February 1922-21 July 2014
This week we remember, our beloved husband, father and friend Val Allister, whose kind and generous heart stopped beating ten years ago. Even though he lived a long and full life, it still it wasn’t long enough, as there was still a lot that he planned to accomplish.
He was born 102 years ago in Tralee, in a modest home in Caherina. An only child of William and Hannah (nee Spicer) Allister he was a long awaited and cherished child. Val was richly gifted with talent and ability and he excelled in everything he did. He was an outstanding athlete - cycling, swimming in his favourite Banna Strand all year around, mountain climbing, and of course he was passionate about Gaelic football. He wasn’t happy with just being a spectator, so he and his life long friend Frank Spring organised a first junior football team for which they both played.
He was very artistic and found an outlet for his creativity in photography , that became his lifelong interest, he mastered woodcarving to make lovely toys, and created railway models that were so intricate and detailed that they truly became miniature worlds. During the course of his career as a civil engineer Val travelled the world near and far. England, Africa,
Saudi Arabia- everywhere he went he carried in his heart love for his Kingdom and his Mother made sure he would always get his weekly copy of «The Kerryman», so that he would never miss the news of home. In late years he developed a passion for flying and was seriously studying theory and taking lessons in an aviation club in Cork – after each lesson he felt he was charged up with the energy of the Sky. Despite this wide range of interests his main passion was classical music. He devoted himself to it and in return received inspiration and strength to live life to the full.
Val inherited his beautiful singing voice from his Mum. She had a soprano voice and was a member of Tralee Operatic Society. A talented musician she was the first to spot his musical ability and then nurtured it by becoming his first vocal teacher. Val had his debut concert at 17, and his Mom received many letters of admiration from people who were touched by his voice. Even at that young age he sang as if he already knew love and loss , and the full extent of turmoil known to human soul. His desire for perfection made him study music to the highest technical level and he never stopped working on developing his vocal skills.
It wasn’t just his exceptional baritone voice with a wide vocal range and a
rare timbre that made him special to admirers of his talent. His captivating stage presence and an ability to share with the audience emotional warmth touched even those who were indifferent to classical music. Hearing him sing transported audience into a different, magical world of beauty.
After his many travels Val was very happy to return to live in his beloved Tralee in 2005, and became a proud member of local Probus society and Tralee Gramophone Society. He continued to share his time between Tralee and Yalta in Crimea, which became his second home, where he was able to pursue his lifelong ambition to be a singer. Over the span of 20 years Val built up a strong presence in the local art world and became very popular and respected both by the lovers of classical music and in the professional musical community. He was 91 when he gave his last performance at a Christmas charity concert in Dominican Church in Yalta, to a usual standing ovation. Sadly, Val passed away in Crimea in July 2014, whilst on his regular summer visit, and the City of Yalta became his last resting place. Val was a kind and modest man, who went through life with honour and integrity.
“The special years will not return When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever.”
He set an example to everyone who was close to him, inspiring the desire to be the best we can be. We all remember Val as he was - always full of energy, wisdom and enthusiasm for life, so much so that even ten years after his passing, we feel his loving presence in our lives.
“Dear, Val, your anniversary now is an occasion to celebrate your life as we feel blessed to have had a chance to know and love such a great man. In our hearts and prayers your memory always stays alive and not a day goes by when we don’t think of you.
Love you always, your wife Nadia, children Veronica and Roman and all your friends.”

Valuable role of Kerry cancer support charity recognised nationally
Recovery Haven Kerry, a cancer support charity, has been nationally recognized for its essential role in aiding cancer patients and their families. The charity was one of 16 centers in Ireland to receive plaques acknowledging their full membership in the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Alliance, a group of voluntary and charity organizations providing support services to cancer patients and their families. Additionally, 10 associate member charities, including Kerry Cancer Support Group, were also honored.
The NCCP Alliance advocates for integrated pathways between cancer centers, acute hospitals, community cancer support services, and primary care services. This development aligns with Sláintecare values, providing assurance to healthcare professionals that these organizations meet agreed standards set out in the NCCP’s Best Practice Guidance.
Recovery Haven Kerry Chairman, Tim McSwiney, emphasized the significance of complying with these best practices, stating, “It offers us a yardstick to measure what we are doing against the standards required. As a result, healthcare professionals have more confidence in referring people to our services. We are very proud to be a member of the Alliance.”
At the ceremony held at Dublin’s Farmleigh Estate, Recovery Haven Kerry was represented by center manager Gemma Fort and Client Services Coordinator Siobhan MacSweeney. They received their plaque from NCCP Lead for Cancer Survivorship Louise Mullen, Clinical Lead for Psycho-Oncology Dr. Helen Greally, and Minister of State at the Department of Health Colm Burke. The event also announced €3 million in funding for the NCCP’s Alliance of Community Cancer Support Centres and Services through

Tralee Chamber Alliance and Cara Credit Union Announce “Ag Siopadóireacht le Gaelainn” Winners as Irish Language Takes Centre Stage!
Tralee Chamber Alliance and Cara Credit Union proudly announce the winners of the “Ag Siopadóireacht le Gaelainn’” initiative, promoting the Irish language among Tralee’s youth during Seachtain na Gaeilge. This initiative, involving local retailers and primary schools, aimed to integrate the Irish language into daily life for Tralee’s young residents.
The initiative encouraged students to use Irish in local shops and businesses, fostering a vibrant bilingual community. To celebrate its success, three primary schools received gift vouchers for art and craft supplies, recognizing their exceptional enthusiasm for using Irish throughout the week-long celebration. The winning schools are:
1. St. John’s Parochial School
2. Ardfert National School
3. Scoil Eoin Balloonagh
Colette O’ Connor, CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, expressed pride in the community’s response. “Tralee Chamber Alliance promotes Tralee as a great place to live, work, and visit.
Highlighting our strong community spirit, we involved local businesses and primary schools in this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge to emphasize Tralee’s status as a Gaeltacht Service town. Cara Credit Union funded the initiative, and it was wonderful to see such enthusiastic participation from schools and businesses across North Kerry.”
Siobhán Donnelly, Cara Credit Union’s Marketing Manager, added, “We are thrilled to support this initiative, which fosters a love for the Irish language and strengthens community ties. Congratulations to the winning schools and thanks to Tralee Chamber Alliance and
all participating retailers for their support.”
The “Ag Siopadóireacht le Gaelainn’” initiative has set a new standard for community collaboration in promoting the Irish language, encouraging the younger generation
to embrace their cultural heritage and make Irish a part of their everyday lives.
Pointing The Way: New Wayfinding Signage Erected In Tralee
Installation of the new bespoke bilingual wayfinding signage has commenced in Tralee town centre. The project, which is funded by Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland (under the Destination Town Programme) will see directional, information and interpretive signage installed at 35 locations around the main town core.
The signage is aimed at pedestrians and provides information highlighting and directing visitors to the many points of interest in Tralee. The signature signage gives interpretive information on the town’s many important heritage sites.
Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, welcomed the signs as a fabulous addition to what Tralee has to offer to visitors: “The signage overlaps and compliments the Tralee Town
Heritage Trail and contains QR codes to download the digital trail and audio guide. The signage also contains NaviLens codes which will allow visually impaired people to access interpretive and wayfinding content on their mobile devices,” he said.
The Fáilte Ireland Destination Town Initiative is part of the National Tourism Development Authority’s work to drive a better regional spread of overseas and domestic visitors and spend.
Josephine O’Driscoll, Manager, Wild Atlantic Way at Fáilte Ireland said: “Fáilte Ireland looks for every opportunity to expand the number of destinations that offer compelling visitor experiences with the potential to drive visitors across the regions. Initiatives, like our Destination Towns Scheme, are critical in doing
this by boosting the tourism appeal of destinations across the country. The new bilingual wayfinding signage launched today with not only help visitors navigate Tralee but
also highlights the town’s historical, natural, and cultural treasuresbringing the unique story of Tralee to life to new and exciting ways.”
Fenit RNLI to celebrate 30 years of a return to saving lives at sea with open day this weekend
Fenit RNLI celebrates a double milestone this weekend: the 30th anniversary of its return to Fenit Harbour after a 25-year hiatus and the 200th anniversary of the lifesaving charity. The station team will host an open day on Sunday, 21 July, at Fenit Harbour Marina from 1-4pm.
The lifeboat service in Fenit originally closed in 1969, but a dedicated group successfully campaigned for its reinstatement in 1993. On 29 June 1994, an all-weather lifeboat arrived to a warm welcome from the community, marking a proud day
for those who worked tirelessly to restore the service.
Over the past 30 years, a new lifeboat station has been built, coordinating operations with an all-weather Trent class lifeboat and an inshore D class lifeboat. These boats enable the crew to respond to emergencies in all weather conditions, performing searches and rescues close to shore and in challenging locations like cliffs and caves. The service area extends from beyond the Blasket Islands to Kilkee in Co. Clare. Since reinstatement, the service has been launched over 700

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !
TROPHY WIFE
Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful 25 year-old blonde who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful looks and charm. She hangs onto Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word.
His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?”
Bob replies, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!” They’re amazed, but continue to ask. “So, how did you persuade her to marry you?”
“I lied about my age”, Bob replies.
“What, did you tell her you were only 50?”
Bob smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”
MY WIFE WON’T LIKE IT
One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what’s your name?”
“Its Jack , and I’m Okay thanks,” I replied.
It’s already run out of battery.
THE NOTE
I came home from the golf course today, and found a note my wife had left on the refrigerator. IT’S NOT WORKING.
I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. GONE TO STAY WITH MY SISTER
I opened the fridge. The light came on. The beer was cold. What the HELL is she talking about?
ROY HODGSON IS ON THE JONATHAN ROSS SHOW
Afterwards the host takes his guest down to the local pub. They leave the pub completely smashed and Roy and Jonathan decide to break into a distillery. Roy is the first to open a cask, tastes it, and asks Jonathan, “Is this whiskey?”
Jonathan replies, “Not as wisky as wobbing a bank!”

“Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I’ll help you get the cart up later.”
“That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, but I don’t think my wife would like it.”
“Oh, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty and persuasive... I was weak.
“Well okay,” I finally agreed, and added, “but my wife won’t like it.”
After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.”
“Don’t be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?”
“Under the cart!”

EASTER JOKE
This rooster wakes up early Easter Sunday morning. He sticks his head out of the chicken coop, and sees all these multicolored eggs all over the barnyard. He takes a look at the eggs, takes a look at the hens, takes another look at the eggs, takes one more look at the hens, he thinks about it for a minute, then he walks across the barnyard and smashes the peacock.

Austin Stack Club - Death of Tadhg McMahon, RIP
We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of Austin Stacks’ most beloved members, our Juvenile Club President, Tadhg McMahon, who passed away on Friday, July 12th, after a short illness.
Tadhg’s connection with the Austin Stacks Club dates back to its early days, starting with his grandfather, Ned Drummond, who composed the famous poem “The Boys from the Top of the Rock.
Tadhg’s love for Austin Stacks was influenced by his uncles, Paddy and Tadhg Drummond, prominent club players in the 1930s and 1940s.
