Medical Matters CYSTITIS (BLADDER INFECTIONS) Cystitis is an infection or inflammation of the bladder. It can occur at any age in women and men. It can cause pain, burning or stinging when peeing. You may have the urge to pee frequently during the day or at night. In most cases it is not serious but can be very uncomfortable. Certain people are more prone to cystitis, for example: • Sexually active women • Pregnant women • Women during or after the “change of life” (menopause) • People with diabetes have more sugar in their urine which encourages bacteria to grow. • Elderly men with an enlarged prostate. • People with a catheter in their bladder. • Children with urinary reflux • Certain drugs or treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. If you think you have cystitis drink plenty of water, go to the toilet regularly- don't hold back for too long and empty the bladder fully. Ladies should also empty their bladder before and after sexual intercourse and avoid genital irritants for example soaps, bubble baths, perfumes. Women should wipe from front to back after going to the toilet.

By Dr Christa Marczuk

There is conflicting evidence about taking cranberries. Some people find it helpful. You could try it in the form of capsules, cranberry concentrate or even a remedy called “Cystopurin” which you can buy in your pharmacy without a prescription. Painkillers such as paracetamol (e.g. “Panadol”) or ibuprofen (e.g. “Nurofen”) may also help with the pain. If you do not feel better after trying the above advice you may need to see your GP or practice nurse with a fresh sample of urine. They will analyse your urine and may even send it off to the hospital for more specific testing. He/she may prescribe you a urinary antiseptic or an oral antibiotic. Please complete the full course prescribed. If you don’t improve within a few days of taking antibiotics, you should return to see your GP with another sample of urine in a sterile bottle which you can get from your GP or your pharmacist. The following may indicate that your cystitis is more serious: • Blood in the urine. • Abdominal pain or backache. • Fever. • Nausea and/or vomiting. If you have any of these problems, you should try to see your GP or practice nurse as soon as possible.

Wine of the Week Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Offers everything one may expect from a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Playful and expressive fruit (green apple, orange, passion fruit), notes of grass and box tree, zippy acidity in a juicy context, floral notes, cool and mineral, energetic, good persistence on the finish with grapefruit bitters and just a hint of reduction. Very expressive of grape variety and terroir. A great success at this price point! Pairs well with grilled fish, but do not hesitate to enjoy it on it's own on warm sunny days!

Jennifer says join the volunteers on this years Festival team! VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help coordinate and marshal the multitude of events planned for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival from 17th to 21st August. The Rose of Tralee, Dr Jennifer Byrne, travelled to Tralee to personally thank the current volunteer panel for their role in staging such a massive event each year and to invite new volunteers to join a great team in 2018. The deadline for receipt of Volunteer Application Forms is Friday 27th July 2018. Prospective volunteers will gain first-hand experience of working on a large international Arts and Culture Festival that has such a rich and celebrated history. The Operations Manager with the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Oliver Hurley, said: “Volunteers are certainly the life-blood of the Rose of Tralee International Festival and their involvement is vital to the successful 10

running of this major event. The general public would not enjoy the parades, fireworks displays, live music and street entertainment without the presence of an efficient, skilled and dedicated team of volunteers.” All volunteers will receive health and safety training, will be provided with a team uniform, access to meals while on their breaks and a chance to be part of one of the world’s most famous family festivals. Part-time volunteers will be asked to work 4-hour shifts, while full-time volunteers who cover a minimum of eight 4-hour shifts will receive some extra goodies including free tickets to events in the Dome. Most of all, volunteers are an integral part of something special with an opportunity to be hands-on and up-close with events such as the Rose Parades, Fireworks Displays, on-street entertainment, Festival Dome events and much more. Friday 15th June 2018

“Volunteers must be 18 years of age or over, have enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to help the Festival in its celebrations especially with this year’s exciting program free and affordable events,” said Oliver Hurley. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Creative Ireland Kerry brings you Cruinniu na nÓg Cruinniú na nÓg programme in Tralee will celebrate youthful creativity 6th June 2018 Cruinniú na nÓg is taking place all over Ireland on Saturday June 23rd next. As the national day of creativity for children and young people, the programme in Kerry looks set to enthuse young people of all ages and families throughout the day. Organised by Creative Ireland Kerry, all events are free and the full county programme is available on www.creative.ireland.ie/ cruinniu but if you are planning on staying in Tralee here is the listing to help you plan your Cruinniú! The programme opens at Tralee Library at 11.ooam for 3-6 year olds with a Storytime session called Rainbows, Wolves & Bumblebees. For those slightly older Horrible History Tours commence at the County Museum at 11.00am, 12noon, 2.00pm and 3.00pm and the event we are told has been fashioned with additional medieval characters and goriness. A ‘Sing Together’ showcase with young choral singers takes place at the Winter Garden Room in the Brandon Hotel at 12noon. Participants will showcase what they have learnt from a week of immersion in the art of

contemporary singing and will lead the audience in a sing-along to open and close the show. There is a Creative Writing Workshop called ‘Pull A Story From Your Head’ at 2.00pm at Tralee Library where participants will devise a plot, create a main character and write an opening and closing paragraph. Back at the County Museum a Punch & Judy Puppet Show commences at 2.00pm and 3.00pm. There is a dance performance taking place outside the front entrance to Tralee Tourist Office and will feature students from Ardfert National School who have been working with dance artist in residence Maria Svensson. This will take place at 3.30pm and will relocate in the event of rain to the Siamsa Tire Theatre and Arts Centre in the Town Park. Meanwhile a Create in the Park event with Kingdom Party Pals will take place in the Town Park opposite the Tourist Office entrance from 2.00-4.00pm and will include craft activities, a Kids Karaoke and a Mad Hatters Tea Party with face painting. This event will also take place in Siamsa Tire if rain comes down on the day.

Meanwhile in Brosna the Con Curtin Music Festival is hosting a Young Musician Polka and Slide Session at 2.30pm at the Three Counties Bar and a Fiddle Recital with leading Irish Musicians will perform for young and old at 5pm in Kate Pat’s Bar in Brosna. All events are free and run from 11.00 to 5.00pm. Brochures and posters are being distributed across the county this week and the events are listed on www. creative.ireland.ie/cruinniu with updates provided on Facebook and Twitter through @KerryCoArts and via @ creativeirl #mycruinniu

Co-ordinated by the Arts Office at Kerry County Council with support from Creative Ireland, the day is set as an annual celebration nationally from this year onwards. “It is a great opportunity for our young people to get creative and meet new people. Communities and organisations across the county are set to take part and it is also a chance to connect and celebrate our individual creativity”, stated Kate Kennelly, the Creative Ireland Kerry Co-ordinator and Arts Officer at Kerry County Council.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Lero, IT Tralee and Bon Secours announce Hip research programme Lero, the SFI Irish Software Research Centre and IT Tralee have announced a €223,500 programme with Bon Secours Hospital Tralee (BSHT) which could advance the future use of robotics to perform hip replacement operations. The initial goal of the initiative, which is backed by Science Foundation Ireland, will be to develop a more accurate way for surgeons to place a hip joint so as to minimise a patient’s hospital stay and avoid re-admittance due to issues arising from the operation. IT Tralee is looking to hire a PhD student to join the five-person research team. “Going forward, advancements in robotic technology will allow many surgical procedures to be undertaken by autonomous systems. A vital component of this for Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) will be to identify and ensure the correct alignment of the artificial joint and the outer bone,” commented Dr. Joseph Walsh, Head of School of STEM and Lero researcher at IT Tralee who is heading the research team. “Software is playing an increasingly important role in medicine,” added Dr. Daniel Riordan, Lero researcher at IT

Tralee. “Our research will seek to establish whether audio or vibrational resonances from the receiving femur can be used to improve outcomes in hip replacement surgery. We will then analyse these signals using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms to ensure the optimum placing of the hip joint.” Mr John Rice, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee added, “Hip replacement involves the creation of a cavity in the femur canal into which the stem section is inserted. This process is referred to as reaming. At the moment surgeons use their skill and experience to determine the correct size of the cavity. Over reaming has the potential to fracture the femur which is why it will be a great step forward if we can use technology to objectively determine the correct size and tension of the cavity.” TJ O’Connor, Manager of the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, added, “This project is one of three software engineering research projects on which we are collaborating with IT Tralee and Lero. These projects focus on introducing advanced technology to

help ensure excellence in patient care and are further evidence of our commitment to make the latest technologies available to the community that we serve.” “This will be an exciting project to work on. We are looking for a PhD student with bio or mechanical engineering skills to join our team,” added Mr. Bob Jackson (Lecturer in Multimedia, IT Tralee). Siamsa Tíre..with ‘the best dance party in town’! The National Folk Theatre of Ireland announces the return of its exhilarating percussive dance production ‘Anam’ which opened last week to another standing ovation. It will run for twelve nights across the next three weeks (June 7-10, 14-17, 21-24). This spirited dance party brings together the skills of world-class hard shoe step dancers from the USA, Canada and Ireland to celebrate the similarities and differences between the dancers’ distinct hard shoe styles and take a personal and humorous look at their lives with dance. This uplifting production is performed to live traditional music and song composed by acclaimed musician Fergal Ó’Murchú, along with internationally renowned Mikie Smyth and Joseph McNulty. The show was cocommissioned in 2016 by the 16

Dublin Dance Festival and the National Folk Theatre of Ireland and successfully toured Ireland in 2017. As Siamsa Tíre celebrates 50 years since the first performance in 1968, Anam is one of five productions to feature in the National Folk Theatre’s summer season which opened on 8th May and will run to 20th September. This show continues to receive enthusiastic reviews and audience reactions and it features internationally renowned dancers Matthew Olwell (Appalachian Flat Foot), Jonathan Kelliher (North Kerry “Munnix”), Nathan Pilatzke (Ottawa Valley, Canada) and Jason O’Neill (Modern Irish) who joins them this year following his tour as male lead in Riverdance. Fergal Ó Murchú (who has toured internationally with Ragús, and guested with the Chieftains and the National Symphony Friday 15th June 2018

Orchestra) provides haunting Sean-nós songs and accordian to accompany the dancers, supported by Mikie Smyth (on uileann pipes and tin whistle) who has performed with Riverdance and Ragús and Joseph McNulty (bodhrán and guitar), who also tours with Ragús. Anam is authentic and raw and attests to the tradition of ‘passing on’; celebrating the dance’s essential spirit, yet injecting it with fresh energy to create something new. Using multi-media, the personalities

and stories of each dancer is presented, cleverly telling the story of what has made him the dancer, singer or musician he is today. This is a showcase of international expertise and history of these similar yet different dance forms but brings the craic in a toe-tapping evening of entertainment to audiences worldwide. Anam was codirected by Jonathan Kelliher and Sue-Ellen Chester MacCarthy. For further information visit www.siamsatire.com

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! This week, I wanted to talk about something a little different. I wanted to talk about choosing a Makeup Artist for your wedding/a big event. There are lots of different Makeup Artists out there and choosing the right one for you and your style is very important, especially if it’s an important event or a wedding. Pictures last forever and you don’t want to end up spending time and money only to end up disappointed. DO RESEARCH First and foremost, look up a few Makeup Artists in your area. Look at their work, look at their qualifications and look and their experience. If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist, it’s one

day, pay a bit extra for better quality. On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit. HAVE A TRIAL If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT. There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability. LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/ SUGGESTIONS They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim

Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them. If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return. Lots more exciting news to follow. Stay tuned! Stay fab, stay glam. Keep up with me on any social media, Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook @ bexblah!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! This week I’m going to be talking about something I feel very strongly about, losing weight fast. ‘Quick Fixes’, ‘Lose 10 pounds in 4 weeks’, ‘6 weeks to abs’ and things along that line.

For SO long I wanted the quick fix, I wanted to change my entire body in 12 weeks and would set insane and unrealistic goals. I would google ‘ways to lose 3 stone in 3 months’, ‘lose weight fast’ and all these other crazy things. Quick fixes are attractive because when you want to lose weight, you want to do it fast and easily. Companies make millions selling ‘Quick Fixes’ ’10 minute Ab workouts’ and ’12 week body transformations’, why do they make millions? Because they’re all targeting the same type of person, the person who wants quick results – but here’s the thing, quick results don’t last, they’re not sustainable and realistically, they will set you back. I was the girl who would make a resolution in January, then get caught up with progress, time and why it all wasn’t happening fast enough. I would fall off

22

TRALEE ADVERTISER

track because I was trying quick fixes that weren’t working… then in April I would think, ‘If only I stuck to the plan in January I would be so much closer to my goal’ or ‘It’s so close to Summer now I don’t have enough time to lose weight’. All of these thoughts that now make so little sense. I just wanted the quick fix, the easiest option. The reality is, if you have a high body fat percentage and a lot of weight to lose, quick fixes might work for a certain amount of time, but more than likely one or all of the following will happen. 1. You’ll end up with sagging skin in areas if you lose weight too fast and don’t build muscle. 2. You’ll quit because you aren’t seeing results fast enough. 3. Your plan won’t be sustainable and too restrictive and therefore will set you back. 4. You’ll end up damaging your metabolism. 5. You’ll end up damaging your health. Think of why you want to get in shape and change your body. Is it to look good in a bikini? Is it because Summer is here? Is it to please another person? … Or … Is it to benefit your health? Gain strength? Become more confident in yourself?

Friday 15th June 2018

If it is the latter, great! But you have to be prepared to work hard and take time. In fact, don’t even think about how long it is going to take, I know it’s cliché but you HAVE to just take it day by day and trust the process. There is no big rush, I don’t want to lose an insane amount of weight really fast and have extra skin on my stomach and chest, I want to be strong, fit and healthy for life, not just for the Summer.

So next time you’re tempted by a ‘Lose 7 pounds in 7 days’ diet, think about it a bit more about what you really want.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

Time to treat Dad!!!

Fathers Day is this Sunday and if you’re gonna cook for dear old dad, here are some tasty ideas, Wherever you eat on Sunday, Enjoy the day!

LAMB CHOPS INGREDIENTS • 1 lemon • 1 lemon (cut in half) • fresh thyme • 1/8 cup olive oil • sea salt METHOD Put the lamb chops in a shallow dish and cover with 1/8 cup of oil, the lemon juice, and a couple of tablespoons of thyme leaves. Cover and let it sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. Turn the chops over a couple of times to allow all surfaces to marinate. Preheat a stove top grill pan on high heat for about 5 minutes. Lower the heat slightly and grill the chops for about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Don’t move them once you put them down so you will get nice grill marks. Grill the lemon alongside the chops. Serve right away sprinkled with sea salt and more fresh thyme leaves.

HOW TO ROAST AND CARVE THE RIB OF BEEF Season the joint with the crushed pepper and sea salt or a flavouring of your choice. Press onto the fat and flesh to evenly coat. Roast for 20 minutes at 220C/fan 200C/gas 7, then turn the oven down to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3.Cook for 20 minutes per 450g for medium/15 minutes per 450g for rare. Rest the meat for 15-30 minutes in a warm place.Slice the meat neatly away from the bone. Cut the meat away from in between the bones or separate the bones and serve as they are. Carve the joint into slices and serve. Noels Tip: Resting meat will make it more tender and juicy as it allows the juices to reabsorb evenly through it after cooking. Put your joint on a warm plate and cover it loosely with foil. Set aside for 15 - 30 minutes before carving it. Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com

More Dublin-Kerry Capacity for Kerry Airport KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: YOUNG WORKERS Question I am 17 years old and I have just finished school. I would like to get a part-time job over the summer. Are there restrictions on the number of hours I can work and will I get the minimum wage?

Aer Lingus Regional, operated by Stobart Air, has increased its frequency on routes for winter 2018. The airline, which operates 20 routes from Ireland, will have over 735,000 seats on its network which operates flights from Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Donegal and Kerry. Aer Lingus Regional’s Dublin Kerry route will have an increased seat capacity of 30% for winter 2018 and will continue to be serviced by a larger aircraft (ATR72). Over 51,000 passengers flew the route in 2017. Winter 2018 will see the airline’s popular routes from Dublin to Edinburgh; Dublin to Glasgow; Dublin to Newquay and Cork to Manchester, gaining an additional 70,000 seats to its route network. Stobart Air, earlier this year, announced the renewal of its Dublin-Kerry and Dublin-Donegal Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes under the Aer Lingus Regional brand. The contracts will run until the 31 January 2022. Commenting on the announcement, Graeme Buchanan, Managing Director of Stobart Air said; ‘We are pleased to expand our service for winter 2018 and to be able to offer our passengers more frequent services on popular routes. Our increased route capacity will not only benefit our passengers traveling out of Ireland but will also be hugely beneficial to passengers traveling to the US via Dublin as they can save time by availing of the Dublin preclearance service.” Aer Lingus Regional currently flies up to 580 flights per week across its 25 routes throughout Ireland, the UK and France. Answer The maximum working week for young people aged 16 and 17 is 40 hours, and you cannot work more than 8 hours a day. If you work for more than one employer, your combined daily or weekly hours of work cannot be more than this maximum. Usually, you are only permitted to work between 6am and 10pm, but in licenced premises (pubs and restaurants) you are legally allowed to work until 11pm at weekends and during school holidays. The national minimum wage for an experienced adult is currently €9.55 per hour. People aged under 18 are only entitled to up to 70% of the experienced adult rate This is €6.69 per hour. Your employer is free to pay you more than the minimum wage if they wish, but they are not required to do so by law. You must get a payslip from your employer. A payslip is a statement in writing from the employer that shows your total pay before tax and details of deductions from your pay. If you get tips from customers there is nothing in law to state you are automatically entitled to these tips. However, the law does not require you to hand these tips to your employer either. Instead, it depends on the custom and practice in your workplace. These rules are set out in the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996. Your employer must give you the official summary of the Act, along with other details of your terms of employment, within one month of your start date. All employers with employees under 18 must display the official summary of the Act somewhere visible where it can be easily read. Your employer must also see a copy of your birth certificate, or other evidence of your age, before employing you.

A Royal recipe for fun, colour and excitement Féile na mBláth at The Park Festival this Weekend . FORGET Chelsea Flower Show, because the visit of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall coincides with the magnificent Féile na mBláth at The Park Festival from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th June in Tralee Town Park. Well who knows, the heir to the British throne might pop in to sample some of the fantastic events during their Royal visit to Tralee on Friday 15th June. Nonetheless, the crowds will be treated like Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses by the team who have put together a great programme of weekend entertainment. This year’s renewal of the popular mid-summer festival in Kerry’s capital town promises to be better than last year’s event and all that’s needed is some fine weather to keep the spirits up. The Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley, said: “Féile na mBláth has long been a popular event on the festivals calendar in Tralee.

Féile na mBláth has all the ingredients for a magnificent mid-summer Park Festival in Tralee featuring something for everyone in the open air and under the marquees. The Town Park in Tralee is a beautiful attraction for people of all ages, especially when it’s the venue for a weekend of top quality family entertainment.” Festival-goers will be spoiled for choice with over 30 gourmet food and craft stalls, Art in the Park, Kidz Zone, fun with Guido Fanzini and a Circus Workshop. It is the season for flowers and all things bright and colourful, so it’s only fitting that Féile na mBláth should be a showcase for garden enthusiasts. Over the three days of the festival, there will be a Floral Display Competition Exhibition, Garden Display, Flower Demonstrations, a Gardening Talk and Nature Walk. Culture, history and the environment always feature prominently at The Park Festival with fun presentations, demonstrations

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

and activities for all the family including the Medieval Living History Experience, The Big Dig and story-telling. It doesn’t end there because the Dog Shows, Junior parkRun, Archery, Falconry displays, demonstrations from the Emergency Services and Drum Workshops are guaranteed to keep the crowds entertained all weekend. IT’S ONLY A JOKE FIRST DAY OF WORK. OOPS . . . A freshly-graduated college recruit joined a big corporate empire as a trainee. On the very first day of work, he dialed the pantry and shouted into the phone, “Get me a coffee, quickly!” The voice from the other side responded, “You fool you’ve dialed the wrong extension! Do you know who you’re talking to?” “No,” replied the trainee. “It’s the CEO of the company, you fool!” The trainee shouted back, “And do you know who YOU are talking to, you fool?!” “No,” replied the CEO indignantly. “Good!” replied the trainee, and hung up the phone.

A COUPLE ARE DRIVING HOME FROM THEIR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT AND ARE KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT They find themselves meeting St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, and he’s about to let them in to Heaven. Before they go in, the woman says “St. Peter, we were planning to get married in a few months, is there any way we can get married in Heaven, so we can spend the rest of eternity together?” “Hmm, I don’t see why not” says St. Peter. “Give me a moment”. He leaves the couple there, and wanders off into Heaven. After quite some time, St. Peter comes back, and assures the couple that they can indeed get married in Heaven. “Not to be a bother, St. Peter,” the man starts “but we were talking while you were gone, and decided eternity is really a long time to be married. What if we change our minds? Is it possible that we might be able to get divorced in Heaven?” Somewhat surprised by this, St. Peter throws up his hands and says “Do you know how long it took me to find a priest up here, you think I’m ever gonna find a lawyer for you?!”

A NEW GUY STARTS WORKING AT THE LOCAL MENTAL ASYLUM.

After giving him some general indications, the director tells him to ask any question he may have. -Yes, director, I have one. How do we know if a patient is cured and ready to leave the asylum? -Well -says the director-, once per year, we gather some of them and ask them a question. If they answer it correctly, then they are cured and are free to go. The director gathers three patients for a demonstration. -So, resident 121, what is six times six? -One thousand? -says the first one. -Well no, that’s another year here for you. The director proceeds to ask the second patient the same question. -Well, the answer is February. -My God... No, no it isn’t. You are staying here one more year. Finally, the director asks the question to the third patient. -What is six times six? -Obviously it 36. The director cheers the third patient and proceeds to comunicate the asylum staff he is ready to leave. The new guy asks the patient before he leaves: -Good job answering correctly. How did you know it? -Well, it was easy. I divided one thousand by February.

A MAN IS RIDING THROUGH THE HIGHWAY LISTENING TO THE RADIO...

Suddenly the radio starts booming: “Traffic alert. There is a car driving on the wrong side of the road in Route 54. Please avoid entering the highway until further notice.” The man, staring at the radio with a confused expression thinks to himself “One? There are hundreds of them!”

The Green Leaving Cert Class of 1968 celebrates 50th year reunion meal and Some of them mightn’t have seen each other for fifty years but old friendships and acquaintances were renewed when members of the 1968 Leaving Cert class from Tralee CBS got together on Friday, 1st June to celebrate the golden jubilee of their graduation from The Green. They came from as far away as Tehran in Iran, Phoenix in the USA, London, Dublin, Cork, Limerick and many other parts of Ireland as well as Tralee. The organising committee of Fr. Seán Hanafin, Pádraig O Moráin, Francie McSwiney, John Conway, Conor Fitzgerald, Fionán O Connell and Billy Ryle spent a few months putting the entire reunion programme together. Tom O Halloran, who had a great grá for The Green, would also have been a valued member of the committee if not for his untimely death in November 2016. The organising committee set out to present a relaxed day of minimal formality, an enjoyable

lots of chat and stories about the good old days from 50yrs ago in The Green. They certainly achieved that aim with a memorable reunion.

TORQUING CARS! JAGUAR LAND ROVER CONFIRMS PLANS TO MOVE DISCOVERY FACTORY FROM BIRMINGHAM TO SLOVAKIA - WITH 10,000 POTENTIAL REDUNDANCIES

Jaguar Land Rover has revealed plans to move the production of its Discovery SUV from Birmingham to Slovakia next year. The Solihull factory, where the model is currently manufactured, will instead be used to build a new series of Range Rover models, the company said. In announcing the decision to shift to Europe, the firm warned that there may be some job losses as a result - but insisted the business is “committed to the UK”. “The potential losses of some agency employed staff in the UK is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally,” a statement said. There are 1,800 agency workers in the Solihull plant, out of a workforce of 10,000.Previously, JLR had said the manufacture of the Discovery would be split between Solihull and Slovakia.Steve McCabe, business expert at Birmingham City University, said the “silver lining” to the latest announcement was that Tata had said it would increase its production of electric cars in Solihull. “But at the same time, we can talk about the statistics and the numbers of jobs lost, but for many families this news will be truly devastating,” he said. “Every day we seem to hear more about job losses and closures and as Brexit moves closer and closer in the horizon, it’ll be even more difficult to predict where we will be in a year’s time,” he added.

LE MANS-WINNING 1966 FORD GT40 SET TO SELL FOR £9MILLION

A RARE classic Ford GT40 that won Le Mans has gone on sale at auction for a whopping £9million.A classic Ford GT40 is set to become the most expensive car made by the manufacturer ever sold. The gold GT40 is one of the three Ford GTs to have crossed the line at the 1966 Le Mans 24-hour race. Ford achieved an iconic 1-2-3 photo-finish victory at the race and this particular model for sale finished third in that race. The 1966 Ford GT40 MkII with chassis number P/1016, driven by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson, completed 348 laps and finished third overall for the Holman & Moody racing team. It is being auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s and has been given a price of $12 million (£9 million) which would make it the most expensive Ford ever sold. Powering the legendary car is a seven-litre V8 engine which has a top speed of over 200mph. It will be sold in Monterey, California in August. Alexander Weaver, a car specialist at RM Sotheby’s, said: “The status of P/1016 speaks for itself, and if it wasn’t for this car, the history of motorsport as we know it would be very different.

NO COMMENT FROM MERCEDES IRELAND OVER EMISSIONS RECALL

Mercedes in Ireland is making no comment, or has any statement to make, on any aspect of the emissions-related recall by the automaker in Germany. A spokesman said the firm would not be saying anything as of now on the matter. The auto giant was ordered to recall vehicles in Germany after two meetings with that country’s top regulator failed to clear concerns about irregularities in the diesel emissions of some vehicles. As part of the German recall, engine software will be upgraded in Vito vans as well as the GLC Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and the popular C-Class.Europe’s Industry Commissioner, Elzbieta Bienkowska, intervened to claim that all 28 EU member states should issue mandatory recalls. It is estimated that would bring the total number to 774,000 vehicles. She claimed the “diesel scandal (was) still not over”.She added: “It is really time to make rapid progress on zeroemission cars.”Mercedes is among those setting a fast pace in bringing electric cars to the market, starting next year.It was reported earlier that the German government had ordered “an immediate formal recall because of prohibited shut-off devices”. The company has strenuously denied cheating on diesel emissions. However, reports say that by issuing a recall it escapes potentially costlier measures such as fines or a hardware fix.The age of the cars involved in the exercise is not clear, but there are suggestions that latest-generation models with EU6 emission certification are included.Mercedes has rigorously insisted that its diesel engine software conforms to EU laws. There can be instances where it is permissible to switch off the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) filter in diesel engines to preserve the engine.SCR is designed to help convert nitrogen oxides into diatomic nitrogen and water. FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CUP OF MEMORIES FOR KENNEDY CUP: Having previewed the Kennedy Cup last week this week we bring you the story from the first three days – which is a day longer than the other print media!! But even as this is being written we still won’t know exactly where the 2018 team finished as there are still two days of play left. What we can say is that Kerry were involved in a tough struggle with Cavan / Monaghan to top the Group it was the League from up the country that pipped up to that spot. Credit to them as this is the first time they have reached the Last 8 of the Cup. Both sides won their opening two games with Kerry defeating Roscommon 2-1 thanks to goals from Eddie McCarthy and a Cianan Cooney penalty. Cavan / Monaghan defeated Mayo 3-1 at the same time. Kerry next saw off Mayo 1-0 with a Robert Stack corner being headed home by Kieran O’Connor. Cavan/ Monaghan had it much easier in their game against a 10 man Roscommon side winning 5-1. Therefore it was the top two seeds that played in the final group game in a winner takes all game. Eddie McCarthy put Kerry in front with a cracker after 12 minutes by the game was level on 18 when Cavan / Monaghan scored from the spot. Cianan Cooney had a huge claim for a penalty waved away and then Kerry got caught with a breakaway goal. Credit to all concerned Kerry did everything to get back into the game and certainly deserved a draw but it wasn’t to be. And so Group 1 finished with Cavan / Monaghan topping the group from Kerry, Mayo and Roscommon. This put Kerry into the Bowl quarter final where they faced a Clare side who were looking to bounce back from a surprising 4-1 defeat to Wicklow. And following a tight game it was the Banner that took the win on penalties. Both defences were on top in the first half with Rocco Rujuvucan setting up Eddie McCarthy for Kerry’s closest effort. Into the second half and it was Clare that took the lead in the 7th minute with a break-away goal. But they only led for 3 minutes as Kerry

equalised when Eoghan Hassett finished to the net following an Eddie McCarthy pass. Both sides pushed for the winner with Kerry going close on a number of occasions but also surviving a scare when a Clare free kick was brilliantly finger tipped onto the crossbar by Liam Carmody. There were no further scores and with no extra time at the Kennedy Cup the game went directly to penalties. Kerry missed their first but scored through Eddie McCarthy, Sean O’Connor and Messiah Chirwa. When Kerry’s 4th penalty hit the post Clare were in the driving seat but Liam Carmody them made a great save to keep Kerry in the game. But he could do nothing about Conor Meaney’s final effort even though he did get a hand on it and Clare went through to the Bowl semi-final. Kerry then went into the Play-off games for 13th to 16th places and we will bring you the report on those next week. CAMOGIE FÉILE A GREAT SUCCESS FOR PARNELLS: In their first ever participation at Camogie Féile, the Tralee Parnells under 14 girls enjoyed an action packed weekend of hospitality, friendship, group matches, development, team building and knock-out games. The club was especially thankful to all the host families for their hospitality over the weekend. It is hoped that some of the clubs will visit Tralee over the coming months. The club was delighted to see the Chair of the Kerry camogie board in attendance and also to Ballymac Dairy for the freshly pressed orange juice that arrived in time to revive the troops The girls played three games and every player started at least one of the games. Parnells girls made history at Roscommon Gaels GAA grounds when they became the first Tralee camogie team to reach a Feile semi-final. They saw off a dogged Tulsk side from Roscommon to reach an unexpected semi-final that took place in Athlone. Tralee next faced Omagh who had enjoyed a comfortable quarter final win in a game where Parnells had its people taking notes. Tralee were hit by two early goals but Friday 15th June 2018

battled back to close the gap. However Omagh held on to qualify for the final but great credit is due to these Tralee Under 14, 13 and 12 players at the club’s first ever Camogie Féile and they not only hugely enjoyed getting this far, but also noticeably improved in skills, discipline, and teamwork over the three days. KERRY CAMOGIE CLUBS ENJOY THEIR FEILE: Kerry Camogie are very proud of our four clubs who took part in Féile over the weekend. Cillard travelled to the Regional Féile in Naas and played their hearts out against two strongholds of the game, Loughgiel of Antrim and Portaferry of Down, going down narrowly to both. Tralee Parnells reached the Division 7 Shield semifinal going down to Omagh on a scoreline of 2-2 to 1-1. Killarney faced Crosserlough in the Division 5 Shield quarter-final. Despite a spirited display by Cailíní Chill Airne, the Cavan girls proved that little bit stronger and took the spoils. In the Division 5 Cup Final, Causeway faced Na Brídeoga of Mayo who had knocked them out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage in 2017. However, this time the Kerry girls proved too strong and lifted the title on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-0. The performances of our camogie teams coupled with the displays of our young hurlers showcased the depth of talent that exists in Kerry. Well done to all involved. PARNELLS PIECES: Two u6’s teams took part in a blitz in the IT Tralee playing St Brendan’s, Firies and Abbeydorney and showed great skills. Well done to Philip Doyle who won the Parnells u8 ground hurling Poc Fada competition while the Parnells u10 boys enjoyed their Blitz this week. AUSTIN STACKS STORIES: The club thanks all those who supported their Munster Final Scratchcard Game fundraiser. All the monies will go to the juvenile section of the club. My ticket is for the first goal to be scored in the 68th minute so I doubt I will be collecting the e500.

The u6/8/10’s enjoyed the visit of Killorglin last weekend. They train again this Sunday with the u8’s in Go Games action and the Thursday night football also continues. The u12 A’s and B’s enjoyed wins over Rathmore and Churchill and will be in Naas this Sunday for the Blitz. The u13’s won their opening Town League game against Churchill. The u14 Town side have qualified for at least a play-off in the Championship. The club teams Central League campaign begins this week. The Munster u15 Super Touch competition takes place in Mallow this Sunday with a number of the club players in action. The club will host the annual ‘Cúl’ football camp from July 2nd to July 6th with Micheal Quirke in charge and bookings now being taken. The club football camp will take place from August 7th to August 11th. BALLYMAC NEWS: The Seniors took on Na Gaeil in Round 6 of the County League at home in what turned out to be a tight and exciting game with the Tralee town side leading midway through the half 1-05 to 1-04. Eanna Reidy scored the Ballymac goal. They added two points to Na Gaeils 4 leaving it 1-06 to 1-09 at the break. Na Gaeil opened the second half much the better and soon had the gap out to 8 points 2-13 to 1-08 with minutes remaining. However credit to the Ballymac boys they hit two goals from Padraig McCarthy and Thomas O’Connor to earn a draw to the delight of the home crowd. It ended Ballymac 3-10 to Na Gaeils 2-13. Ballymac will take on Dromid Pearses in Round 7. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2,16, 18 and 20 with the next jackpot being e5100. In the underage the u12 boys made the long trip to Valentia a winning one defeating the home side 5-22 to 3-02. Team 1 and 3 were in action against the Crokes in midweek. The u13’s got their Town League campaign off to a winning start when they defeated Ardfert 5-11 to 5-0 and will play Austin Stacks this week. ST PAT’S UPDATES: As the Lotto draw was done after the club notes we will have the results next week.
