LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Santa Claus was very good to Jimmy this year and bought him a drone for Christmas, but Jimmy’s parents were wondering where he could fly his drone and if there were restrictions for their use so let’s take a look at their concerns. Flying Drones have become popular in the past couple of years, due to a big reduction in price and advancement in technology but most would not know that there are strict rules governing their usage. What is a Drone? A drone is an unmanned aircraft / remotely piloted aircraft that are fitted with small propellers and are capable of fairly fast speeds and impressive stunts up in the air. Many of them nowadays are fitted with high definition cameras that can record stunning views otherwise not seen to us. That is the upside but obviously that can be an invasion of privacy so let’s look at the Laws involved in flying a Drone. You can Never fly a drone if it will be a hazard to another aircraft in flight. You are not permitted to fly a drone over a crowd and the drone must never be more than 300 meters from the operator or out of sight. Important to note that the drone must not be within 30 metres of any person, vessel or structure not under the control of the person operating the drone. And must never be flown over 120meters above the ground. Since 21 December 2017 all drones weighing a kilo or more have to be registered, this includes the weight of the battery and all attached equipment. You can register it in a two-step process on the IAA website at www.iaa.ie/ drones. Drones must never be used near restricted areas like a prison, army barracks and airports, these may be fairly obvious Laws but they have been broken! If on private land then the drone operator must have permission from the landowner for take-off and landing purposes and please note that these regulations apply everywhere in Irish airspace, regardless of whether it’s your private property or not. The IAA advise that there may be privacy or trespass laws that should be taken into consideration before flying a drone. Data protection law applies outside of the domestic circle so facial recording of third parties or recording of their personal space could result in a data protection complaint or a breach of privacy case. See the Irish Aviation Authority website for more information. www.iaa.ie Legal Quip : A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other!

TRALEE’S IBAL LITTER RANKING IMPROVES THANKS TO ‘NEW-LOOK ‘TOWN CENTRE. AND TEAM BRAMBLE! The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter showed Tralee was again “moderately littered” in 31st position ...an improved result on the previous survey in 2017 and KiIlarney as Clean to European Norms, in 16th spot in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. The An Taisce report stated: “Tralee has edged closer to Clean status, after an improved result on the previous survey in 2017. The Mall was looking particularly well after extensive works to pedestrianise the area – all aspects of the area surveyed were in excellent order. Some of the moderately littered sites just missed getting the top litter grade e.g. Rock Street and Castle Street – Upper and Lower. By far the most heavily littered site surveyed in Tralee was a site on Godfrey Place – one part of this site was being used as a car park and there was a constant stream of litter 4

TRALEE ADVERTISER

around the perimeter of the car park.” A number of moderately littered sites prevented Killarney from attaining a higher ranking. Some of the topranking sites were not just clear of litter but particularly well presented and maintained e.g. Muckross House and the Jarvey Park – it wasn’t just the lack of litter which sets them apart but also the overall presentation and maintenance of same. Main Street just missed getting the top litter grade. There were no heavily littered sites.” Friday 5th January 2018

Ennis, Roscommon and last year’s winner Kildare are vying for the title of Ireland’s cleanest town, to be announced by Minister Denis Naughten this week in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin*. As a measure

of the importance which business places on a litterfree environment, a specially commissioned public sculpture worth up to €40,000 will be erected in the winning town.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

At the end of every great meal! As desserts go this is a very popular one, one of the house favourites in Croí, Restaurant in the Square , Tralee.... I’m always asked for the recipe. So here it is a beautiful tart and refreshing dessert to finish a meal with!

TART AU CITRON - LEMON TART INGREDIENTS For the pastry • 175g/6oz plain flour • 100g/3½oz cold butter, cut into small cubes • 25g/1oz icing sugar • 1 free-range egg yolk • 1 tbsp cold water For the filling • 5 free-range eggs • 125ml/4fl oz double cream • 225g/8oz caster sugar • 4 lemons, juice and zest • icing sugar, for dusting

METHOD To make the pastry, place the flour, butter and icing sugar into a food processor. Pulse briefly until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then add the egg yolk and water. Pulse again until the mixture sticks together in clumps then tip onto a work surface and gather it into a ball with your hands. Knead the pastry just two or three times to make it smooth. If your butter was a bit too soft, the pastry might be too. If so, wrap it in parchment paper and chill for 15 minutes. Grease a 23cm/9in loose-bottomed, fluted tart tin. Lay a piece of parchment paper on the work surface. Remove the base from the tart tin and lay it on the paper. Using a pencil, draw a circle onto the paper 4cm/1½in bigger than the tin base. Dust the base of the tin with flour. Place the pastry ball in the centre of the tin base and flatten it out slightly. Roll out the pastry, still on the base, until it meets the circle mark. As you are rolling out, turn the pastry by turning the paper. Gently fold the pastry surrounding the tin base in towards the centre. Carefully lift the tin base off the work surface,

drop it into the tin, then ease the pastry into the corners and up the sides of the tin, pressing the overhang lightly over the rim. If the pastry has cracked at all, simply press it together to seal. Press the pastry into the flutes of the tin then lightly prick the base with a fork, but not quite all the way through. Place the pastry-lined tin on a baking tray, cover loosely with cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Remove the cling film from the pastry case and line with foil so it supports the sides, then fill with baking beans. Bake blind for 12-15 minutes, until the pastry is set, then lift out the foil and beans. Carefully trim the excess pastry from the sides using a sharp knife, holding the knife at a sharp angle and slicing away from you. Remove the trimmings from the sheet. Return the empty pastry case to the oven for another 10-12 minutes or until it is pale golden and completely dry. Set aside to cool while you make the filling. Reduce the oven temperature to 170C/325F/Gas 3. For the filling, break the eggs into a large bowl and whisk together with a wire whisk. Add the rest of the filling ingredients and whisk again

until they are all well combined. Pour the filling mixture into a jug, then into the cooled baked pastry case. To prevent it spilling as it goes in the oven, pour in most of the filling so it almost fills the tart, carefully sit the baking sheet and tart on the oven shelf, then top up with the rest of the filling to completely fill it. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until just set but with a slight wobble in the centre. Leave to cool slightly then, when the pastry seems firm enough, remove the tart from the tin. The easiest way to do this is to place the base of the tin on an upturned can or jam jar and let the outer ring fall to the work surface. Transfer the tart to a serving plate and serve warm or cold, dusted with sifted icing sugar.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. HAPPY NEW YEAR! I’ve been loving the gym this week, I’m definitely using it as a form of release and distraction, and there’s no problem with that. The gym is a perfect place to only focus on you and getting done what you have to. And that’s what I want 2018 to be for me, focusing 100% on myself. 1. Uphill Incline walking: Great cardio to get the heart rate going while also being amazing for your legs and bum. I put the treadmill to the highest incline and walk as fast as I can for anywhere from 10 to 30 mins. I usually just watch YouTube videos to make the time go fast whilst walking. 2. Interval Sprints: I love sprints as it really gets my heart rate up and I get a good sweat on, which is key after Christmas! 3. Deadlifts: Did you know whilst being great for your bum, deadlifts are also fantastic for your stomach! I do 3 sets of 10 reps with 30kg on the bar at the moment. 4. Squats: I do two types. Barbell squats on the squat rack or else squats with a dumbbell in my hand. Again squats are not just for your bum, they’re a good full body exercise. Just make sure your form is on point before adding too much weight. 5. Lunges: Can you see a pattern here? I’m all about the lower body at the moment. I do weighted walking lunges. 6. Cable kick backs: An exercise that I only recently started encorporating into my workouts but I love it. It’s a great glute isolation movement.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE PARDON

A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD AMISH BOY AND HIS FATHER WERE IN A SHOPPING MALL......

Two men get into an elevator in a doctors office. One man, beaming says to the other, “I just got a brand new hearing aid. It works great; if you were to drop a pin, I could hear it; if a mouse were to sneeze cross the street, I would hear it.” The second man They were amazed by almost everything they saw, replies “thats impressive, what kind is it?” but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The first man looks down at his watch and says “11 o’clock.”

The boy asked, ‘What is this, Father?’ The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, ‘Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don’t know what it is.’ While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number. and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.

PIZZATIME !

While working at a pizza parlour I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. The cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. The man then said ‘Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don’t think I’m hungry enough to eat 6

GRANDAD WE LOVE YOU !!

A little girl says .....”Grandad ,,,,Would you make a frog noise for me?” The grandad, confused asks, “why?” The little girl replies, “dad says when you croak we are all going to disneyland”.

A YOUNG GARDA

A young Garda notices an old man driving through the town at 2 in the morning .... and it had been a pretty slow night and so he decided to pull in over to see if he needed any assistance.

Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous 24-year-old blond stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son..... ‘Go get your Mother.’

A SMALL JOKE

A dwarf goes to a very good but very busy doctor and asks “I know you are busy but do you treat dwarves?” The doctor replies “Yes, but you will have to be a little patient”.

“Where are you going sir?,” asked the young officer. “I am on my way to attend a lecture concerning the negative effects of alcohol on interpersonal relationships,” said the man. “Who would hold such a lecture at this time of night?” asked the officer. “That would be my wife,” said the man.

TORQUING CARS! SOLE TRADERS SAVING €12K TAX ON CARS

A budget measure that has escaped widespread attention means sole traders can save around €12,000 on income tax if they buy an electric vehicle (EV). Under the Accelerated Capital Allowances deal, self employed sole traders who buy an EV can front-load the depreciation on the car for the first year and save close to €12,000 on their tax bill. According to Nissan chief executive James McCarthy, “When people finally wake up to this, there will be a flood of sole traders looking to get into an electric vehicle. It’s a direct deduction from your tax bill.” It is also in addition to zero Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) for those who drive an electric company car. Boosted by such incentives, EV sales are expected to double here next year, albeit from a small base. And this year’s cumulative total of 3,200 is forecast to increase to 14,000 by 2020. The biggest constraint on growth in the medium term will be supply of product as demand is picking up quickly across Europe. Also restricting pickup is lack of a centralised structure here to manage and develop the whole EV system and charging network. Mr McCarthy criticised local authorities for clamping cars while they are being charged, especially in Dublin city centre. “We need a local authority ‘buy-in’ and joined-up thinking for investment in the infrastructure,” he said.

GOVT INCREASE IN VRT TAKE THE UPSIDE OF WEAK STERLING AND USED CAR IMPORTS

Official statistics released this week by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that the total new car registrations for the year 2017 finished, as anticipated at 131,356, -10% down on 2016 (146,649). Although new Commercial Vehicle registrations showed an increase for both Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicles during the final month of the year, with very low volumes in December, this did not impact on the overall trend for the full year. New Light Commercial Vehicle registrations (LCV) at 24,195, recorded a fall of -14.2% for the year in 2017, while New Heavy Commercial Vehicle registrations (HGV) 2,602 saw a decrease of -9.4% over the 12 months compared to 2016 (2,873). Used Commercial Vehicle Imports increased during 2017; LCV up +21.3% and HGV up +14.8%. Imported Used Cars reached 93,454, which was an increase of 29.5% on 2016 (72,153). Commenting on the figures SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan stated “2017 was a very challenging year for the Motor Industry, mainly due to the impact of Brexit on Euro/Sterling exchange rates. Without Brexit we would have anticipated a reasonable level of growth in the market but in the aftermath of the UK Brexit vote we had modified our projection to 132,000 and that prediction turned out to be very accurate with the car market finishing at 131,356. This number is still better than most recent years and produced reasonable volumes across all vehicle sales sectors. We are, of course, now at the commencement of the new 181 sales period which is hugely important for our members who remain optimistic for the coming year. For new car buyers competition in the choice of models, the various incentives and special offers as well as the range of finance options mean that competition is driving value for consumers. The obvious value available in the Irish new car market has been apparent over the past 12 months with only 79 new cars imported in 2017, despite the low value of sterling. While used imports have been increasing strongly new car imports have fallen by 25% in the last year and by almost 60% over the last three years. With such a range of models, offers and finance options available to consumers to choose from, the best advice, as always, is to research in advance to shop around and, if you can, shop local and support businesses in your home place.”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR HERE’S TO A SPORTINGLY GREAT 2018: So how was Christmas 2017 and the start of the New Year for you in sporting terms? Certainly for some for sportsperson s it was a time to remember while for others it will be one that they will not want to remember. Here is a quick look back at some of the highlights over the last two weeks. HUNDRED’S TAKE THE CHRISTMAS DAY DIP: Where better to start our first column since December 22nd than on Christmas Day itself? For the 66th time the Swim in Fenit attracted another huge crowd. The tradition of taking a dip on the big day goes back to 1952 and this year the mild temperatures and calm dry conditions swelled the crowd to 750 with as many again watching on. The traditional singing of Jingle Bells at 11.55 was followed by the first dip led by octogenarian PJ Costello. While many just take three very short dips in the water the more experienced went for a longer swim. As usual members of the RNLI were on hand with seasonal refreshments as this is a very important fundraising day for this wonderful organisation. Planning will soon begin for the 67th Christmas Day swim in 12 months. FIRSTLY GOING FORWARD: As we head into 2018 we will again aim to being you all the best sporting news from the Tralee area as well as the occasional piece on other sporting matters. I will also write my opinion pieces most weeks and hopefully you the readers will enjoy these pieces even if you do not always agree with them. For the New Year we are also calling on all sporting organisations and clubs in Tralee to send us in your notes as we want to give your sport the publicity it deserves in the ‘Must Read’ Tralee free sheet. Email your clubs information to traleeadvertiser@gmail.com No sport, club or even supporters club is too small. If you have any connections to Tralee or the surrounding area that we cover then we want to hear from you. And to our regular contributors let us wish you every sporting success

in 2018. GOOD DAY AT THE RACES: For a Tralee point of view arguably the highlight came on the racecourse. Father and son Tom and Bryan Cooper enjoyed winners on the same day at Limerick Races. On December 29th Tom trained Jammy George to win the Irish Field INH Flat Race while earlier son Bryan was first past the post in the first race of the day. He partnered Beyond the Law for Mouse Morris to win the Racing Post Maiden Hurdle. They were not the only Tralee connections to enjoy a win over the festive period. JP Byrne who has connections with The Brandon Hotel was celebrating the win of the Henry de Bromhead trained Tisamystery on St Stephen’s Day while Ballymac native Sean McDermott was also in the winners enclosure. The jockey who has ridden abroad for a number of years was home and successful on Sparky Stowaway. CROSS ALL THE WAY: On the international stage there is no doubt what the big story was. The rise of darts player Rob Cross, from a rookie two years ago balancing his darts playing with his full time job as an electrician, to World Champion is nothing short of meteoritic. Yes he was 20th seed for the PDC World Championship 5th favourite by the bookies and 5th favourite by the bookies very few outside of his camp would have dreamed of what unfolded. The fact the he beat – of should we say thrashed the legendary Phil Taylor in his last ever game. Cross won 6-1 to deny Taylor a 17th World Championship. This win proves again that in sport anything is possible. ON THE MARK: Staying on the international scene and Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane will be happy that Shane Long’s long scoring drought has come to an end. He scored for Southampton for the first time since February while James McClean was also on the mark. RED’S FEELING BLUE BUT THE GREENS NOT AS MUCH: Munster rugby did not have the Christmas and New Year period

Friday 5th January 2018

that they hoped for. And Currow’s JJ Hanrahan had a tough day at the office when the Reds led a 17-0 lead slip against Ulster. But JJ is a tough and by now experienced player and he will bounce back. Tralee native Ultan Dillane’s Connacht had a better time but will still be wondering could they have pipped Leinster at the weekend. Connacht were camped on their opponents line for 39 phases of play but they could not get over the line and eventually they gave away a penalty that brought the game to an end. Ultan hopes to be in the Connacht squad for this weekend’s clash with Munster, a side he has never lost to. WINS ON THE HARDWOOD: It was a good time for Tralee’s basketball team as Garvey’s Tralee Warriors as they retained their Castleisland Blitz title and also won in the SuperLeague. The Blitz final was an all Kerry affair with St Pauls Lakers Killarney being their opponents in the final. There was a packed house for the game in which the Lakers got off to the better start, However with Kieran Donaghy getting to grips with Antuan Bootle and Trae Pemberton hitting a hot streak in the second half the Warriors took the win 48-41 with Pemberton named the MVP. Pemberton’s clutch shots keep Warriors in gear Garvey’s Tralee Warriors finished 2017 in second place on the Super League table after securing their 10th win of the season with a last gasp one point win over bottom of the table KUBS in the Carroll Arena in Greendale on Saturday. However it could have been a very different had Trae Pemberton not stepped up to land two free throws to edge out the home side after an unconvincing and disjointed performance by the Warriors. The Tralee side started the game without the services of Kieran Donaghy but despite that made a very assured start to the contest. Darragh O’Hanlon, Darren O’Sullivan and Trae Pemberton all fired in threes and with scores from inside by Dusan Bogdanovic the Warriors found the basket relatively easily in the early stages. KUBS resistance came from scores from captain Gary Barron, Eoin

McCann, Kevin O’Hanlon and Brian Andrews and midway through the first the Warriors led 17-11. KUBS drove on from there with a three from Eoin Chubb and a couple from Andrews but Pemberton and Fergal O’Sullivan kept the Warriors just ahead at quarter time 23-20. The Dublin side started the second in fine style with Andrews again finding his range along with threes from Barron and McCann and despite Fergal O’Sullivan, Pantovic and a Pemberton score from outside, the KUBS turned a threepoint quarter time deficit into a seven-point lead. The Warriors were made to work to bridge the gap which they did through another Pemberton three and back to back scores from Pantovic and when Patrick McCarthy landed a score on his return from injury the game was tied at 39-39 at the half time break. The Warriors asserted early in the third with two big threes and when Pemberton followed suit the Tralee side pushed out to a 6-point lead. Fergal O’Sullivan and Eoin Chubb swapped threes and the KUBS added through Barron and Andrews but Pemberton was finding routes to the basket from all angles and with three successful drives saw the Warriors lead 62-54 as the sides turned from home. When it seemed like the Warriors would make their move to win the game early in the fourth they allowed KUBS a window of opportunity through some wayward shooting and defensive fouls much to the delight of the noisy and enthusiastic home support. Andrews went to the line to shoot three and Barron backed that up with a score and the extra and suddenly the sides were level again. Pemberton was twice on the mark again and when he went to the line to hit two for the Warriors he pushed the lead out to 6. However Andrews hit back with a score followed by two free throws for KUBS that seemed to completely unsettle the Tralee side just as it seemed they had done enough to win the game. KUBS realised that their chance to win their first Super League of the season had finally arrived and when Barron and O’Hanlon fired in they led by one with just seconds left. Warriors needed a decisive play to win and it fell to Trae Pemberton to come up with the drive to the basket that forced the foul. He brought his game total to 28 by calmly landing the two free throws to secure the win by the smallest of margins. Next up for the Warriors is an away trip to Galway on Saturday 13th January to take on Moycullen in the Kingfisher Arena at NUIG. The Warriors faithful will have to wait until Saturday 3rd February to see their team in action and pack the Tralee Sports Complex again when Pyrobel Killester come to town. Scorers for Warriors: Trae Pemberton 28, Goran Pantovic 15, Darragh O’Hanlon 11 AUTOCROSS THE MOTORSPORT HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHT:

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER The Jimmy Devane Autocross which was postponed earlier in the year took place this week at the Ballybeggan Racecourse in Tralee. The Killarney and Kerry Motor Clubs came together to ensure that this prestigious event went ahead. The drivers tackled a 2.6km loose surface circuit with the event part of the Munster Autocross Championship and the trophies on the day were kindly sponsored by Rentokil Initial. After the drivers 3 runs the winner was Pat O’Driscoll from Clonakilty in his Semog Buggy. He finished just ahead of last year’s winner Ballyvourney’s James Lucey. Killarney’s Tommy Daly was the top Kerry driver taking 3rd place overall while Limerick’s PJ O’Connor won the Saloon category in his Mitsubishi Evo 9. Owen Murphy in a Subaru Impressa was 5th overall and the first in Class 5 while Peter Brennan was next in his Casmat taking Class 6. The top 10 was rounded off by four Semog drivers – Brian O’Mahony, Kevin O’Connor, Factna McCarthy and Stephen Lane. Derek Butler was first in Class 3 in his Honda Civic. William Meade won Class 1 in his Nova and was 17th overall. Dinney Greany won Class 2 in the 205 with Charles O’Neill winning Class 7 in the Mazda SP. Ballybeggan: As an aside for a minute this proves that the old Tralee racecourse is a resource in the town that is being underused. Surely it is time for a strategic plan to be put in place by all interested parties. There is plenty of land that could be used by the Council for social housing while a sports park could also be included. With some planning there could be a racecourse re developed with an autocross track in the centre. The racecourse could also be used as a coursing run while other inclusions could be the likes of a skate park, a kid’s playground etc. This area could be developed without a huge cost apart from the racecourse that would need investment. But if Tralee could get back 7 days racing over the year this would be an investment well worth making. But that’s one for the powers that be – maybe an open meeting of interested parties could be the starting point. SHUTTLECOCK READY FOR A SMASHING TIME: Badminton is a sport that has a large participation across the county and once the New Year begins so does the serious side of the sport. There will be a large number of Kerry players travelling to UL this Sunday for the Munster Individual championships for grades F to H. The first in county competition will be this Wednesday when the Ladies and Men’s Divisions 3 and 4, sponsored by Agri Auto Parts Tralee, will culminate in the Presentation Hall in Tralee. Tralee will also be represented in the Kerry Schools competition on Thursday when the Presentation Tralee and Tralee CBS will be taking part in the Killarney Sports

Complex. NA GAEIL TO REPRESENT TRALEE IN SCOR: The Munster finals of Scor nOg takes place this Sunday in Oven’s in Cork with 4 Kerry clubs in action – Spa Killarney, Glenflesk, Kilcummin and Na Gaeil. The latter are representing the Tralee/St Brendan’s Board with Dearbhala Quirke competing in the Recitation while the club will also be in the Leiriu competition. Here those representing Tralee are Barry Sugrue, Dearbhala Quirke, Joshua Roche, Liam Og Kingston, Emily Crowe, Isobel Crowe, Aine O’Sullivan and Aoife O’Sullivan. DOGS ON THE TRACK AND ON THE GRASS: One of the biggest greyhound events in the country has been confirmed once again for the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium. The event was launched before Christmas in the offices of Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan by Denis Murphy and Declan Dowling, Sales and Operations Manager at the Kingdom Greyhound stadium who said “The stadium is very grateful to GMHD.ie Insurances Killarney for their continued sponsorship of our premier event here at the stadium and would urge all greyhound owners and patrons to support Denis and his company when insuring their various assets. This event has always proved to be of the highest quality introducing dogs that go onto contest the major events on the calendar. I have no doubt that 2018 will be of the same calibre and we could be looking at entrants from this event competing in both the English Derby at Towcester and the Irish premier event at Shelbourne Park. Many of Ireland’s top owners and trainers have expressed an interest in having runners in this year’s event and I am really looking to the start date of February 9th.” SIS Moves: The regular Saturday morning SIS meeting at the track will move to an afternoon time slot from this weekend. The first race will be at 2.12pm with the final race at 4.27pm and weight in beginning at 1.30pm. No Night Racing -There will be no Saturday night racing at the Track on January 13th and 27th. On the track over Christmas the big winner was the Alan Williams owned, Owen McKenna trained Holycross Lad who won the e6,500 to the winner T Nolan CVRT Test Centre Kingdom Derby. Kingdom Cup: It was busy time on the coursing front with the Kingdom Cup at Ballybeggan Park being the highlight. There were huge crowds in attendance over the two days at the Kerry Coursing Club celebrated its 100 year anniversary. The feature event was the Kingdom Cup which went to Skellig Shane trained by Denis O’Driscoll from Glanmire. He will most lightly appear again at the end of the season to defend his Irish Cup crown. Sam John James, Knockane Gracie in the Reserve Oaks and

Lisloose Wonder who took the Tommy and JACK Sheehy Memorial Cup were other impressive winner at the Tralee course as was Maggie Sixteen who won the Baily Cup. At the Corn Na Feile meeting in Abbeyfeale Silent Whisper proved again why he is one of the big fancies for the National meeting in a few weeks. ON SIDE: In the Kerry soccer world the big news was the grant aid secured by the KDL for a second All Weather pitch at Mounthawk Park which will be of huge benefit to the game in the county. On the field trials will commence in the coming weeks for both the 17’s and 15’s League of Ireland squads for the new season commencing in April. It is great to have the opportunity for Kerry players to play at this level within their own county so hopefully once again all the clubs will supply their players for the trials. The Schoolboys Girls League commences again this Saturday with the ETP’s also back. The Kerry 15’s and 16’s are looking forward to Provincial Plate semi-finals while a number of clubs are also into the latter stages of the SFAI Subway Cups. In the KDL while Tralee Dynamos are struggling in Premier A things are better for Tralee clubs in Premier B with Tralee Celtic leading the way from Mitchels Avenue. St Brendan’s Park are on the up and are leading Division 1B while Classic lead 2A with Spa Road top of 2B. In the u17 and u18 Leagues The Park lead both Northern sections. IN THE SQUARE: The 2018 GAA Inter County scene began in 2017 with the Kerry hurlers going down to Clare in their Munster Senior Hurling League opener. The game was moved to LIT, not an ideal venue for an Inter County game, but it didn’t really make a difference as Clare proved too strong winning 4-20 to 0-12. Kerry face Limerick this Sunday in another tough encounter that the management team, who have added Brian Culbert and John Barry to their line-up, will hope will pay dividends later in the season. Happy New Year: All our GAA Clubs have taken this week’s column to wish all their players, coaches, sponsors and members all the best for 2018. BALLYMAC GAA STRICTLY LOVE DANCING 2018: Plans are well underway for Ballymac GAA’s major fundraiser, their Strictly Come Dancing. The dancers have been in rehearsals for a few months now and as I have sponsored one of Kerry’s famous sports journalists Mort Murphy I will be looking forward to his and his dance partner Maura Leen’s big performance. The duo are dancing for Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House. Tickets will be on sale from this weekend at Horans Fruit and Veg at the Horan Centre, The Halfway Bar in Ballymac, O’Riardas Bar and from Friday 5th January 2018

the Ballygarry Hotel. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,19,24 and 28 and the next jackpot was e5,500. We will have details of that draw next week. Juvenile Academy: Training for the u6/u8 and u10’s will recommence on Sunday January 14th. The training will take place in Cumann Iosaef Hall. New members are always welcome. Seniors: The club is delighted to announce that outgoing senior manager Joe Costello has been reappointed for the coming season. Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle: The Jimmy Doyle Memorial Cycle takes place on Saturday January 13th starting at 11am at the St Pats clubhouse in Blennerville. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The Austin Stacks Juvenile AGM takes place this Sunday at 7pm at Connolly Park. The club hopes for a big turn out as the club enters its 101st year. The 2018 action for the young players begins on January 14th and parents will be informed as to the times. Calendars: There are still some club calendars available from the usual outlets priced at e5. The club is looking for members to take part in Scor Senior in the quiz and ballad group. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Kerins O’Rahillys Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,6,23 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e2,200. NA GAEIL NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,13, 21 and 26 and the next jackpot will be e5,400. The Na Gaeil Bord na nOg AGM took place last weekend and the new committee under Chair Colm O’Suilleabhain has started work for the new year. The club is looking to build on its award as Juvenile Club of the Year in 2017. The club was also delighted to honour its three victorious Kerry minors. The club wishes its Scor na nOg competitors all the best for the Munster final in Cork this weekend. On the Green’s: At the Tralee Golf Club in the Sean Walsh Am Am the team of John Reen, Geraldine Reen, Barry Murphy and Dave Tarrant were the winner on 103 points. Second were Seamus McGearailt, Mary Savage, Emma Morrissey and Billy Morrissey while the quartet of Peter O’Driscoll, Maurice Laide, Donie O’Keeffe and Kevin Lucey were third. In the Singles competition Graham Spring was the winner. The Tralee Captains Drive-In is on January 28th.
