IDEAS FOR POPPING THE QUESTION ON VALENTINES DAY! If you plan to propose this year you might be wracking your brain for an innovative idea to spring your surprise. Undoubtedly, here in Kerry we have some of Europe’s most romantic backdrops. Here are our top picks for popping the question… Which one are you? The Scribe All over the county we are spoiled with glittering golden sand and the sparkling ocean. Choose Ladies Beach in Ballybunion or whichever beach is nearest to write your “Marry Me?” in the sand. The Gourmet Imagine the aroma of delicious food and the ambiance of romance... Book a table at your favourite restaurant and make sure to order champagne. At the right moment, ask your question over the candlelight while gazing adoringly into your love’s eyes. The Meadowlands Tralee has a special Valentines evening organised – four course dinner and bubbly.
The Adventurer If you both love spending time in the outdoors, the county has a huge selection of proposal options for you. Will you climb Mount Brandon? Pony trek at Camp? Or will you be asking for your love’s hand in a sea-kayak? The possibilities are endless. Check out Wild Water Adventures Tralee for more ideas. The Cuddler If you are happiest snuggled up beside your love, but want to be a bit more imaginative, then a horse-drawn carriage ride at the Lakes of Killarney is the perfect spot for your big question.
The Sports Enthusiast If you are both sport mad, then get yourself a pair of tickets for an inter-county match at Austin Stacks Park. We wonder if they have a Kiss-Cam… Regardless of which type of proposer you are, you will definitely need a beautiful diamond engagement ring to seal the deal. John Ross Jewellers, Tralee has a huge selection to suit all tastes and budgets. You can select the perfect ring in the privacy of their diamond room. Best of luck with your romantic plans…

Medical Matters DR KAREN SOFFE TALKS ABOUT TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU STOP SMOKING Almost everybody knows smoking is a major cause of heart attacks, strokes and lung cancer. However, smoking can also cause the following: • Wrinkles on your face as you get older • Sexual problems such as impotence (i.e. difficulty in getting or maintain an erection during sex) • Cervical cancer in women • Low IQ in children whose mother smoked during pregnancy Nicotine replacement therapy such as Nicotine Gums or E-Cigarettes for 6 to 12 weeks may help ease the withdrawal effects from nicotine. “Champex”, a tablet that helps reduce cravings, can be helpful for some people. Ask your GP about this prescription medicine if you are interested. If you do get a craving to smoke, try some or all of the following: • Take a few deep breaths and remind yourself why you need to stop • Brush your teeth • Drink fresh juice • Go for a brisk walk or a jog • Chew on some sugar-free gum
Most cravings pass within a few minutes. Complete abstinence will give you your best chance of success. Recognise your achievements and give yourself a small reward once in a while (i.e. the money you saved might buy you a nice shirt or the pair of shoes you saw in the shop last week). The peace of mind that comes with not smoking should not be underestimated. You will have no more worries about your health and the guilt associated with smoking will disappear. For more help and advice about trying to stop smoking please visit the following website: www.quit.ie or phone the HSE’s National Smoker’s Quit line: 1850 201 203 (8am – 10pm, Mon to Sat) or see: www.theashestreetclinic.com=newsletter=stop smoking

Are you a Victim or Victor in your own life?? So often our past experiences dictate our present thoughts and beliefs but they can be so overwhelming that they can stop us on our tracks and prevent us from moving forward .This so often is based on FEAR and often with weight loss a person may reach a certain weight and then everything comes to a full stop because the person is constantly reliving how in the past they reached this stage before and gained all the weight and even more back again .Their ties to the past totally have the potential to sabotage them from moving forward .This all lies in a persons own lack of self belief and is rooted in the belief that it is our thoughts that become our reality. What I mean by that is if you believe you wont reach your goals then you certainly will not.... Our thoughts=Words=Actions=Beliefs==DESTINY So often the real missing link in weight loss is our MIND...Who would have thought ....It is so often easier to train the biceps and triceps muscles than it is to retrain the most important muscle of all our BRAIN!!! So we professionals in the industry all now know that ‘’MENTAL STRENGHT’’ -‘’SELF BELIEF’’-‘’POSITIVE THINKING’’ is an integral part of sustained weight loss and is as important as the food we eat and the exercise we partake in. So I urge you all to make 2018 the year where the SELF SABATOUER in you is diminished and the SELF AFFIRMING .SELF BELIEVING and POWERFUL You FLOURISHES...Please know YOU cannot achieve a positive result with a negative mind.....so ditch those self doubting negative thoughts and rise above them...Good luck ....Believing and Visualising you will get there is half the battle....Majella DuignanBsc,Nutritional Advisor. “UPDATE ON FENIT DIVING BOARDS...” Minister Brendan Griffin very impressed with Fenit Diving Boards Campaign Deputy Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State at the Department of Tourism & Sport was in Fenit on Tuesday morning to meet a delegation from the Restore Fenit Diving Boards Campaign (RFDBC), to visit the Bathing Slip and to receive a briefing on the proposal for new diving boards, which has been submitted to Kerry County Council. Despite the bitterly cold morning, Minister Griffin walked back to the bathing slip to see for himself the location of the proposed new diving boards and expressed amazement at the picturesque beauty of the location in Tralee Bay in the winter sunshine against the background of the Slieve Mish Mountains. The Minister was very impressed with the quality and energy of the Restore Fenit Diving
Boards Campaign and was given a detailed physical overview of the design by members of the committee. Minister Griffin said that the project, which was designed by Architects and Engineering/ Environmental Consultants, will be a great addition to the infrastructure of the area. He was impressed by the inclusion of disability accessibility and the fact that it will be an entirely public free-to-use aqua-sports facility. It will provide the region with one of the finest facilities of its type in Europe and it will have considerable social, economic, tourism and recreational added value on the North Kerry Wild Atlantic Way coastal route. Minister Griffin pledged to source funding for the project via the Sports Capital Funding
Portal and from Failte Ireland. He hoped that Kerry County Council may also be in a position to part fund the project. In addition to the Minister’s visit on Tuesday, Irish Water Safety carried out a detailed safety assessment of the bathing slip on Saturday last. During the past few weeks also, officials from Kerry County Council officials have been examining he feasibility of the project from the perspective of design, cost and insurance coverage. Since the very successful meeting with Kerry county Council on 22nd January, all sides have fully engaged with the project, which is
now advancing at a rapid pace. The RFDBC campaign is very grateful to Minister Griffin, Kerry County Council’s officials and members, Irish Water Safety and the general public for the magnanimous support for the campaign to restore the diving boards in Fenit. Kerry County Council and RFDBC delegation are due to meet again in the next two weeks. On behalf of the RFDBC Committee

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... “A no-brainer, bucket-list item” - apply to be a Rose of Tralee Escort ROSE of Tralee, Dr Jennifer Byrne and the Rose Escort of the Year, Thomas Lynch have challenged young Irish men to see if they have what it takes to be a Rose Escort at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival from 1721 August 2018. “Why should someone apply? Because it’s such a once in a lifetime, bucket list item!! You meet so many people through the Festival, that the benefit of getting involved isn’t the weeklong festival, it’s the year after, and from what I can see from previous Rose Escorts, it’s the years after that too,” said the 2017 Rose Escort of the Year, Thomas Lynch. March 20th is the entry deadline, so lads will have one month to apply at www. roseoftralee.ie/apply. The primary role of a Rose Escort is to look after his Rose and ensure her time at the Festival is a memorable and enjoyable experience. Interviews will take place at the Glen Royal Hotel and Leisure Club in Maynooth in April, while the successful candidates will take part in a team-building Boot Camp in June at some of Kerry’s most stunning locations. The Rose Escorts will then participate in a range of Festival events in August including the Gala Rose Ball, three Parades and a week packed full of entertainment. The Rose of Tralee, Dr
Jennifer Byrne, said: “The overall experience of the Rose of Tralee for me and the other Roses was all the richer thanks to the laughter and energy that the Rose Escorts brought to the event. We value their support and companionship during the very busy week. Having the time of their lives is guaranteed and the friendships made during the Festival are lasting.” In order to be eligible to be a Rose Escort at the Rose of Tralee International Festival applicants must: •
• •
•
Be male, 21 years of age by 1st January 2018 and not have reached your 31st birthday on or prior to 1st September 2018 Be unmarried or never been married Be born in Ireland or of Irish origin by virtue of one of your ancestors having been born in Ireland Be available for Selection events and if selected be available for the International Festival events from 15th to 21st August 2018 in Tralee.
One of the gentlemen will be announced by Dáithí Ó Sé as the Rose Escort of the Year live on RTÉ television on Monday 20th August 2018. The 2017 Rose Escort of the Year, Thomas Lynch from Castleisland, Co Kerry, said: “Being from Kerry, I
was always a huge fan of the Festival. I grew up watching the parades, going to the Town Park and enjoying the selections on TV, so when a friend of mine suggested I sign up to be Rose Escort, it was really a no-brainer. It’s such a fantastic week with so much packed in it’s hard to choose highlights. There are three key moments that stick out: 1) Seeing my Rose’s awe at the huge crowd at the Saturday parade; 2) Sitting on the float with Jenny at the Midnight Madness Parade; and 3) Seeing how happy my mother
was when I was announced as the Rose Escort of the Year.” Each candidate will be charged an application fee and should he be chosen as a Rose Escort, he will be required to obtain sponsorship of €1500. Lads who are man enough to apply for the job of a lifetime as a Rose of Tralee Escort can do so online www. roseoftralee.ie/apply before Tuesday 20th March or email admin@roseoftralee.ie for more information.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Tralee Rotary Club launch their ‘Just One Life’ programme for Transition Students “As part of Tralee Rotary Clubs plan for the year. We have decided to introduce the ‘Just One Life’ Driver Awareness program to Tralee.” says Grace O Donnell , programme co-ordinator with the Club The Rotary Club of Tralee and Kerry County Council have joined forces with an Garda Siochana, Red Cross, Kerry County Fire Department to present an award winning unique road safety initiative aimed at Transition year students and young people that is very much community based. The objective of the ‘Just One Life’ programme is to save young drivers lives. This is done by demonstrating the common causes of accidents to 1517 year old students in a practical manner which they can understand. Tralee Rotary Club will be hosting this event on Friday the 9th March, 11am-1pm at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School, Tralee. Says Graham Borley , Rotary Club president “We would like to invite all Transition year students to this event, and each student will also get a Certificate of Participation on the day.” For more information contact Grace O Donnell ...traleerotary@gmail.com
Probus Conference to bring 650 delegates to Tralee in May UP to 650 people from all over the island of Ireland will descend on Tralee early in the summer to attend the annual PROBUS All Ireland Rally at the Brandon Conference Centre from 15th to 17th May. PROBUS 1997 Club Tralee, who are organising the event, have launched a sponsorship drive in the hope that local businesses and Kerry County Council will help fund the planning, promotion and delivery of this large-scale conference in Tralee. The 2018 PROBUS All Ireland Rally, will have a positive knock-on effect for the local economy as delegates and their guests are expected to occupy up to 1100 bed nights in the town. They will also visit a number of top tourism and literary locations in Tralee, Killarney, Dingle and Listowel over the course of the three-day event. The All Ireland Rally was last staged in Tralee in 2002 when more than 600 men and women over the age of 55 were in attendance.
The President of PROBUS 1997 Club Tralee, Liam Sayers, said: “We have every intention of staging a memorable event with a view to showcasing Tralee as Ireland’s Best Large Tourism Town and more recently, Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town. More than half of the delegates are expected to travel from Northern Ireland. We have applied to the Kerry County Council Community Fund and we are also inviting local businesses to come on board as sponsors to help us fund the conference. Over the three days of the Rally, we aim to deliver a full programme of entertainment, seminars and delegate-outings to top tourism landmarks in Kerry. We expect to announce details of the guest speakers at the Rally in April.” A number of sponsorship offerings are available with opportunities to position an information stand at the Brandon Conference
Centre for the duration of the conference, advertise in the event programme and place branding at the venue, on the event website and Facebook Page.PROBUS is an international organisation of retired and semi-retired men and women who join together in autonomous clubs. The word PROBUS is an abbreviation of PROfessional and BUSiness but membership is not restricted to these specific groups. The 10 PROBUS Clubs in
Kerry, eight of which are in Tralee and one each in Dingle and Castleisland, have a total membership of nearly 350 members, with a waiting list of people to join some of the clubs. HQ Tralee Presents Hackathon to Support Kerry Charities
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PRESCRIPTION CHARGES Question I have a medical card but I seem to be paying more than the monthly cap for prescription charges for my family. Why would this happen and how can I get a refund? Answer If you have a medical card, there is a charge for each prescription item you receive. From 1 January 2018, the prescription charge is reduced from €2.50 to €2.00 per item, up to a maximum of €20 per month per person or family (previously, the maximum was €25 per month). Usually your pharmacy keeps records of how much you have paid in prescription charges and makes sure that you do not pay more than the limit each month. However, you may use different pharmacies in the same month, or your family members may not be set up as a family group, and you may end up paying more than the maximum.
HQ Tralee Presents a Hackathon to Support Kerry Charities The Charity Hackathon #Hack4Good will take place the weekend of 10th - 11th March, from 10am Saturday morning straight through to Sunday morning at 10 am. We are looking for teams of 6-8 people with skills in Graphic Design, Content Creation, Web Design & various Marketing fields, who are willing to volunteer their time for a charity. We are looking for a mix of ambitious College Students & Practicing Professionals – It will be a great opportunity to showcase your skill, network and even have a bit of fun while you work! CHARITIES: Over this Hackathon weekend we will have 24 hours to create a strong brand, photo & video content, marketing material and an online presence (Social Media Accounts, Donation Pages & Website) for the designated charities, to enable them grow and fund their organisations. STUDENTS: Yes, we know, you’re giving up 24Hours of your time, but if the incredible good feeling of helping a charity isn’t enough, we’ll feed you over the weekend thanks to our great sponsors, we’ll kick in some spot prizes over the weekend to keep you motivated and you’ll get to meet potential Employers who will mentor you. PROFESSIONALS: Of course we’d love to get the full 24Hours off of you, but even it’s as little as 4Hours over the weekend to mentor and support the Students taking part, we would be grateful - and you get to see the skills and talents of the students who could become your future employees! CHARITY REGISTER: https://goo.gl/forms/ wma0bMqXyVZueTDh1
If this happens, the Health Service Executive (HSE) will issue a refund without the need for you to apply for it. This is done on the basis of the information received from pharmacies. You can set up your family as a family group on medicalcard.ie and print off a family certificate to give to your pharmacist. This will show all of the members of your family so that your pharmacy will not collect charges above the monthly limit. Your family is defined as you, your spouse or partner, any children under 16 years of age and any children between 16 and 21 years of age who are in full-time education. If you do not have access to the internet, you can ask your Local Health Office to help with setting up a family group. You can also call the HSE on 1890 252 919 or ask your local pharmacist, who may be able to help you.

ROCK BOYS TAKE ON THE BEST IN CORK: The Austin Stack Club U14s travelled to Cork last Saturday to take part in the annual Mick O’Brien Tournament at the Nemo Rangers Club. They faced strong opposition in Nemo Rangers as well as Dublin’s Templeogue, Cuala and St. Vincents. The Rock lads, who didn’t have as much pre-season work done as the other clubs, were narrowly beaten in their games but put in some very promising displays and they can hold their heads high after the effort and heart shown by all 20 players. Their mentors were very happy with the players’ effort and attitude. Well done to players and mentors. 18

FITNESS TECHNOLOGY The wearable technology phenomenon took off in 2015 and now it is in full swing with Fitbit, Apple, Garmin and Samsung taking up the majority of the marketplace and for those who do not wear a technology most mobile phones will allow you to download apps to track your activity. but what do these activity trackers do? The devices can often tell the time, count the steps, calories, distance and even monitors sleep.
keep your fitness in front of your mind. Every time you look at your wrist or your phone you are bombarded with your latest achievements, statistics and progression. You can even compare these against your friends with the same brands. Many people find that they start to take the stairs instead of the escalators, park further away from work or even go for a walk around the block so that they can reach their daily goal which is usually around 10,000 steps.
They generally allow you to then monitor your performance against set daily fitness goals based on the average amount of steps you take. They also give you a reminder when you have been in active for too long. Smart watches in most cases do everything an activity tracker can do plus more. They generally come with an in built heart rate monitor and GPS and they also link with your phone, some brands even allowing you to receive calls, e-mails and messages.
Why 10,000 steps?
Do they work?
If you were to wear three different watches for a day they would all give you slightly different readings however, if you ask me this is beside the point. What these devices are great for is the fact that they
in the 1960’s Japanese researcher Dr Yoshiro Hatano recommended 10,000 will help improve the health of people. Further research today shows walking this amount can improve health and reduce the risk of disease such as heart disease, stroke, obesity and type II diabetes. Taking 10,000 steps a day is recommended by the World Health Organisation. For the vast majority of people 10,000 steps is a realistic goal that is very achievable. it is important to note that for some people it takes time to build into this level. But, on the flip side some people may do more activity then this and at higher intensities
to reach their goals. It is crucial to consider diet in conjunction with physical activity when it comes to both fitness goals and been healthy. If you need more guidance and advice on exercise speak to your physiotherapist who will happily guide you. But remember….. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step”

I hope you’re all having an amazing week & enjoyed last week’s ‘January Favourites’. This week I’m officially announcing my next event, Beyond The Glam! Due to insane demand and a sell out first event, I have decided to do another in Benners Hotel Tralee on Sunday 4th March. A Masterclass with a difference, Beyond The Glam is a fully interactive and informative afternoon full of tips, tricks, laughs and lots of prizes. I also will only be talking about and recommending brands and products that I would use and recommend myself.
that happen here. It’s like a little Beauty Community!
Tickets for Beyond The Glam are available online on Eventbrite.ie (search Beyond The Glam), on my ‘Rebecca Shortt Makeup’ facebook page, or in Benners Hotel Tralee.
I have very big ideas for Beyond The Glam so be sure to get your ticket early to avoid dissapointment.
I’m honestly so so SO delighted to be able to bring a Beauty Event like this to Tralee, there are so many people here so interested in all things Beauty and it’s a shame there aren’t more big beauty events

I find it hard to imagine that back in December 2016 I still had a 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday office job! I made the leap home to Tralee and Ebb & Flow Yoga was born in late February 2017! We are pretty much a year old!!! It’s been fantastic to be a part of the Manor West Hotel & Leisure Club Team and with the support of the Fitness Team here, as an Ebb & Flow community we have grown from strength to strength together. Back in February, I set out to add variety and bring something new & different to yoga here in Tralee and I cannot thank you enough for coming along this journey with me. Classes have grown in popularity over the year and now there’s 12 weekly classes to choose from including gentle Yoga to energetic Vinyasa, there’s something for everyone from beginners to boffins. Just so many highlights from the year!
• Proud to have introduced Tralee’s first regular Yin Yoga class and Yoga for Stress & Anxiety Relief – teaching techniques that WORK! • Many events (eg) Town Park Yoga, Yoga.Beach.House & Yoga.Town.House and Bend, Breath, Brunch Yoga Events in The Ashe Hotel during Tralee Food Festival & Christmas • Supporting local organisations like the HSE, TraleeHQ & Tralee Tech Park’s work/life balance by offering on-site Yoga for employees • Worked closely with the Keel GAA’s Coach to run pre-season Yoga aiding flexibility & injury prevention • And along with supporting various community initiatives (Parkrun, 31 Day Challenge), we also, thanks to your generosity, raised funding together of over €400 for charities such as Adapt Women's Refuge, Sera Husky & Animal Rescue & Jigsaw Kerry
But enough nostalgia! Stepping into Spring there is so much to look forward to from weekly classes to Teen’s Yoga & Mindfulness classes (starting 6th March) and several great events on the horizon. In addition, I am so excited to be part of the duo that is Golden Pear Yoga Events. Following the success of Tralee YogaFest 2017, Cara Wallace & I are hosting YogaFest 2018 on 3rd & 4th March 2018 together – bringing a weekend of talented Yoga & Holistic Teachers right to you here in Tralee! YogaFest Tralee Half / Full Day and weekend tickets now on sale via Eventbrite. To celebrate Valentines Day, Bring a friend to class for free! Invite along a friend / Significant Other who isn’t currently attending Ebb & Flow Yoga classes from 12th – 16th February inclusive. BOOKING ESSENTIAL, t&cs apply. I’d love to hear from you so to book classes or query events please contact

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL ENJOYING THIS AMAZING WEEK! This week, after hearing and reading so much about it, I decided to try something new. Getting up at 6am, every day. Some people might think this is nothing special, others might be thinking I’m nuts. It’s not that I usually sleep in really late, I usually get up around 9am (late for some, early for others). Why did I decide to implement this? Self improvement. When you think about it, being healthy, fit, going to to gym and improving your nutrition are all elements of self improvement. And I want to implement every method of self improvement that I can, because being healthy isn’t just about the physical but also the mental. You can be as physically healthy as you want but if you’re not as healthy mentally, you’re not living to your full potential! I’ve decided I want to read more, through reading more books and articles, I’ve become engrossed in improving myself fully. The
brain is a muscle too you know! Anyway, back to getting up early. I read recently that the most successful people in the world all share the same trait - they get up early. And by getting up early I mean EARLY - all before 8am. Most between the hours of 5 and 7am. Some studies show that 90% of executives wake up before 6am on weekdays and nearly 50% of self-made millionaires wake up at least three hours before their workday actually begins. •
Why get up early? •
•
It gives more time for things like having a proper morning routine, journalling, goal setting, answering emails and… working out! All before ‘most people’ ever get up at all. Getting a head start on the day before distractions and obligations arise. Attacking the day on your own terms
first thing gives a sense of control. By getting up early though, these people are not losing sleep they are going to bed earlier and all get 6-8hrs a night. Willpower is highest in the morning which leads to better decision making.
So after reading all of this, and a lot more, I decided I would do it. As I’m writing this I’m on day three - so I cannot be a great judge yet, but I do know that I’ve gotten way more work done than I usually would, so that must be a good thing! I’ll keep you all posted!
MEASUREMENTS I’ve decided every week I will update you on my measurements from Week 1 til now. WEEK 1: START Bust: 34 inches Hips: 44 inches Thighs: 28 inches Waist: 31.5 inches
WEEK 3: TODAY Bust: 34 inches Hips: 41.5 inches (-2.5 inches) Thighs: 27.5 inches Waist: 31 inches (-.5 inches)
I really focus on measurements rather than the scales, as being a woman the scales can fluctuate SO much and can be inaccurate when it comes to progress. I do weigh myself daily and take a weekly average from that but I don’t focus on the number.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018 As ye all know I’m a big shellfish lover, and here in Kerry we have some of the best in the world, So here is a recipe from deep Southern America where gumbo is nearly a religion! Enjoy
GUMBO INGREDIENTS CRAB STOCK • 1 onion, quartered • 1 head of garlic, halved • 2 bay leaves • 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns • 2 gallons water • 6 crabs GUMBO • 1 cup canola oil • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 3/4 pound chrizo sausage, finely chopped (2 cups) • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 celery ribs, finely chopped • 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped • 1/2 cup finely chopped garlic (12 large cloves) • 1/2 pound okra, thickly sliced • 1 pound tomatoes, finely chopped • 1/2 teaspoon filé powder
• • • • • • • • •
1/8 teaspoon Creole seasoning 2 thyme sprigs 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon sea salt 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over 1 pound large shrimp, shelled and deveined 2 dozen freshly shucked oysters 2 tablespoons hot sauce, such as Crystal or Tabasco, plus more for serving Basmati rice and sliced scallions, for serving
METHOD Make the Crab Stock - In a large pot, combine all of the ingredients except the crabs and bring to a boil. Add the crabs and simmer briskly over moderate heat for 1 hour, skimming as necessary. Strain the stock into a pot. You should have about 12 cups; add water if necessary, and reserve any extra stock for another use. Discard the crabs. Make the Gumbo - In a large pot, heat the oil. Whisk in the flour and cook over moderately low heat, whisking constantly, until the roux is deep mahogany brown with a nutty aroma, about 40 minutes. Stir in the chorizo, onion, celery, red and green bell peppers, garlic and okra and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes, filé powder, Creole seasoning, thyme, bay leaf, salt and the 12 cups of crab stock. Simmer over moderate heat for 1 hour and 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the crabmeat, shrimp, oysters and 2 tablespoons of hot sauce and cook until the shrimp are white throughout, about 3 minutes. Discard the thyme sprigs and bay leaf. Ladle the gumbo into bowls and top with rice. Garnish with scallions; serve with hot sauce. Make Ahead The gumbo can be prepared 3 days ahead through Step 3. Reheat gently and cook the seafood just before serving. Recipes by

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR AND SEES TWO PIECES OF MEAT HANGING FROM THE CEILING...
Confused, he asks the bartender “why do you have meat hanging from your ceiling?” The bartender says “I’m glad you asked, currently we have a challenge going on where if you can jump up and slap both pieces of meat with your hands I’ll cover your tab for the whole rest of the night. However, if you attempt to slap the meat and miss, you have to pay for everyone else’s drinks in the bar until we close”. The bartender looks back at the customer and asks “So what do you say, would you like to give the challenge a shot?” The customer quickly responds with a “No”. “Why not?” The bartender asks. The customer replies, “The stakes are too high”

A GORILLA WALKS INTO A BAR...
A gorilla goes into a bar and orders a martini. This totally amazes the bartender, but he thinks, “What the heck, I guess I might as well make the drink.” So he mixes the martini. He then walks back over to the give it to the gorilla, and the animal is holding out a twenty-dollar bill. Well, now the bartender is just at a loss for words. He can’t believe that a gorilla walked into his bar, ordered a martini, and then actually had a twenty-dollar bill to pay for it. So, in amazement, he takes the twenty and walks to the cash register to make the change. While he’s standing in front of the cash register he stops for a second and thinks to himself, “Let me try something here and see if the gorilla notices anything.” So he walks back over to the gorilla and hands him a dollar change. The gorilla doesn’t say anything, he just sits there sipping the martini. After a few minutes the bartender just can’t take it anymore. “You know,” he says to the gorilla, “we don’t get too many gorillas in here.” And the gorilla says, “At nineteen dollars a drink I’m not surprised.”

TORQUING CARS! JAGUAR XK120 IN SAME OWNERSHIP FOR 50 YEARS TO BE SOLD AT AUCTION
A 1951 Jaguar XK120 roadster bought for £180 in 1969 and owned by the same person ever since is estimated to fetch between £80,000 and £100,000 when it comes up for auction in Somerset on February 11. The owner bought the Jaguar, which had had only four previous owners, when he was a 19-year-old architecture student. Over the following decades he enjoyed driving the car at hillclimbing events and always found the money to keep it top condition. In 2010 the XK120 began a body-off restoration by a marque specialist that lasted two years. The original 3.4-litre, straight-six engine block was bored out to 3.8 litres and larger twin SU carburettors were fitted along with a Salisbury rear axle and disc brakes all round, to bring the performance into line with later Jaguar models. At the same time, it was decided to repaint the car in its original colour combination of metallic bronze, with a two-tone tan leather interior. The XK120 comes with a Jaguar Heritage certificate and has correct matching numbers for the chassis and engine.Matthew Whitney, head of the classic car department at Charterhouse, which is selling the car, said: “The Jaguar XK120 roadster has always been a sought-after car, but what a car it must have been to own as an architecture student in 1969. “Rarely do you come across cars which have had nearly 50 years of continuous ownership.”
LONDON CAR DEALER SUED FOR SELLING ZONDA SUPERCAR PROPERTY DEVELOPER ‘CAN’T DRIVE’
A property tycoon who splashed out £3.4 million on a Pagani Zonda 760 Coupé is suing the dealer claiming he has been unable to drive it as he was never given the correct documents. Tufan Kalman purchased one of only a handful of the custombuilt Italian sports cars ever built— in February last year. But he claims the supercar “cannot be used” because London-based dealership Pagani UK Ltd failed to provide him with UK registration documents, meaning he has been unable to register it in Switzerland, where he lives. The Turkish born multi-millionaire has lodged a High Court writ against the dealer demanding a full refund plus interest. “To date Pagani UK Ltd has neither delivered the registration documents nor repaid the purchase price,” he argues, adding that the dealership “offered to refund the purchase price if they did not deliver the original UK documents by the end of September 2017”.A spokesperson for the dealership said it was aware of the legal proceedings and has instructed lawyers. “We do know about it. Nothing is anywhere near as black and white as it looks on paper,” she told the Evening Standard. “We did supply Mr Kalman a Pagani Zonda which he accepted delivery of and he had it shipped overseas. Unfortunately I cannot comment on the other matter.” The 760-series boasts a top speed of 218mph and is the most powerful of the car range that can be legally driven on UK roads.
GOVERNMENT INSISTS ON ALL CARS ELECTRIC BY 2030
The Government is sticking to its plans to have only new electric cars on sale here by 2030, it insisted this week That means, as things stand, new hybrid vehicles would not be permitted to be sold from that date. The Irish Independent’s revelations some weeks back highlighting that decision led to claims from some observers that Environment Minister Denis Naughten was flying a kite about excluding hybrids from the zero emissions era, which is just 12 years away. He believed electric vehicle technology alone would be well able to cope with, and meet, needs. When contacted about it again this week, a spokeswoman for Mr Naughten insisted that the minister was merely emphasising what the Government had already announced last November. “And they’re sticking to it,” she added. “Zero emissions only by 2030 - that’s 12 years away but that is the plan.”The critical factor, however, and the one that gave rise to outcry in some quarters, was Mr Naughten’s emphasis, , that cars and vans that are zero emission-capable (hybrids, plug-ins, etc) as opposed to pure zero emissions, would be excluded under the 2030 criteria. He told reporters he was convinced electric vehicles alone - stress alone - would be sufficiently advanced by 2030 to cope with everyday demands (range, availability, charging network, etc). He insisted he was “pushing for there to be nothing only new electric cars sold from 2030”.As part of the transition from fossil fuel to electric only, Mr Naughten said the Government might consider the possibility at some future date of introducing a scrappage scheme for petrols and diesels as part of the incentive to shift towards buying an estimated 125,000 or so new electric vehicles every year. FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR WHY NOT HAVE DINNER IN TRALEE? Now as you read this headline you are thinking has this column changed from a sport’s to a dining column. But bear with me this is certainly not the case. Having attended the Kerry Sports Stars Awards in the INEC last Friday night where over 600 people were present it make me question why two of the counties most prestigious dinners had to be held in Dublin. First there was the Colm Copper testimonial and now the Tralee IT Foundation Board night in honour of Michael O’Muircheartaigh will take place in Dublin in Spetember. Now the organisers will say that as the President Michael D Higgins will be the guest of honour and the fact that its e5000 for a table of ten then it had to be held in Dublin. But I am sure the President would love a weekend in Kerry and there is no doubt that we have the Brandon would be well able to host this event or the Rose Hotel could arrange for the Dome to go up! And as for the e5000 a table then most of this will be corporate bookings and again Kerry would have plenty of attractions for the company’s owners and guests. It is a shame that an event like this does not bring other financial benefits to the town especially as all the funds are going to the Tralee IT Institute of Sport. But that is all organised now so it’s time to look forward. How about a gala dinner where a number of sports in Kerry come together to hold a fundraiser? For example sports like the GAA, soccer, rugby, horse racing and any other sport that wants to get involved could come together. Each sport would commit to being three or four high profile VIP’s of their sport to the event. The idea is to get these sporting stars to the county say on a Friday and give them a tour of each of their sports local clubs on Saturday before the dinner on Saturday night. Tables would be sold by each sporting organisation and to the general public who wanted a chance to meet these stars and proceeds could be divided on a pro-rata basis. Is this worth considering?

ALL IS NOT GOLD IN THE KINGDOM: Firstly I got to say I like the new Kerry away jersey. There was almost a universal welcome for the home jersey but the away one was not as widely welcomed. But I do like the gold and the story around the jersey designed by Paul Galvin. There is a lot of work done on the back of the jersey and with the embossing and with the crest. It certainly does stand out and credit must also go to Paul for making sure the numbers are legible on the back. There is nothing more frustrating for us in the media and for customers when we cannot read the numbers of the players. I believe the initiative taken by County Board Chairman Tim Murphy to invite Paul to design the jerseys was a very good one and from what I have been told the first time a player has been contracted to design a jersey. On the sale of merchandise the Kerry GAA store contributed e75,000 to the County Board coffers and approximately e300,000 since it was opened in Killarney. Add to this the royalties they are taking from the sale in sports shops and you will see how important it is to have merchandise that the public will buy. According to GAA Store manager Niall O’Callaghan the jerseys – which were seen for the first time anywhere last Saturday night when the players came out of the dressing room. When you see in the media this week that Kerry’s bill for training players came to over e1 million, e1,030,443, you will see how important every aspect of getting money in is. As an aside Cork spent the most, nearly e1,750,000 on their teams followed by Dublin at e1,604,353 while at the other end Leitrim’s County Board only spent e298,829. Should the GAA introduce a system where the least successful counties get the highest grants for a few years – a bit like the system in American football where the lowest ranked teams get the first pick of the new players for the following season? Back to Kerry and one thing is for sure is that the new jerseys have been lucky as for the first time in nine years they have won their Friday 9th February 2018
first two league games. But the decision to start David Clifford in Mayo now looks not to have been the right one. He played only 18 minutes and then missed Tralee IT’s Sigerson Cup loss in midweek. David had played two games thee week before. And as he is on a scholarship from the Tralee IT I suggest they will certainly not be happy with the Kerry management. But hopefully his injury is only minor and he and Gavin Crowley are back as soon as possible – if not this weekend in Monaghan. A win here would almost guarantee safely and go a long way towards a possible second League final in a row. PREVIEW FOR POWERSTOWN: In all sports there is a date in the calendar that those involved in and support a certain sport look forward to for the previous twelve months. For those who love coursing this is the week with the National Meeting taking place in Powerstown Park in Clonmel starting on Saturday. There will be plenty of Kerry interest in all the races so hopefully many of the prizes will be coming back to the county. The draws have been published and the preview night held. All the work has been done so let’s hope for a good few days for Kerry dogs and their owners. Dogs at home: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the first round heats of the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic with a winner’s prize of e15000. Also on is the Ladbrokes Easter Cup Trial Stake over 550 yards. The SIS matinee meeting is on Saturday with the first of 8 races off at 2.12pm. The track is also taking entries for the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial trial stake to take place on Friday February 23rd. There will be no qualifying trials on next Monday due to national coursing meeting but will take place as usual on Tuesday night after racing. ROUTE FOR THE RAS: The Route for Kerry Group Rás Mumhan has been announced today. The first major Stage Race of the Irish Cycle Racing season will take place over the 4 days of Easter weekend, March 30th to April 2nd. This year’s race will see Stages 1 and 4 remain the same as in recent years while Stage 2 on Saturday is
EARLIER DATE FOR THE DIARY: Following on from the new Cycling Ireland regulations racing begins on the first weekend of March. The Lacey Cup 2018 will take place on Sunday March 4th. RALLYING NEWS: Of the stages and a number of Kerry men are in the hot seat. Tralee’s PJ O’Dowd has been re-elected as Chair of the Kerry Motor Club while over in London Killarney native Mike Smith heads up the Irish Motor Club. For the 2018 Rally of the Lakes Dermot Healy has been named as Clerk of the Course. On the stages and Keith Moriarty who was the winning co-driver in the Kerry Stages Winter Rally in Banna will now move onto the Junior World Rally Championship where he will call the notes for Derry’s Callum Devine. The duo will compete in a Ford Fiesta starting in Rally Sweden next weekend. ATHLETICS AGM: The AGM of Kerry Athletics will take place this Monday night at 7.30pm in the Rose Hotel in Tralee. All members are welcome where important information on Data Protection and Health and Safety will be presented to the meeting by George Maybury. GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS BATTLE ONTO 7 UNBEATEN: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors picked up their 7th win in 7 SuperLeague games when they defeated one of their main opponents for the title, Pyrobel Killester, in front of a packed Tralee Sports Complex. For a few hours this pit Garvey’s on top of the table but other results saw them slip to second in the battle for the Top 4. Warriors led by Kerry Sports Star Awards winner Kieran Donaghy and the superb Trae Pemberton led at the end of all four quarters 2314, up by 19 at the half, 63-53 at three quarters and 12 at the finish 84-72. Pemberton ended with a huge game high score of 38 points followed by Kieran Donaghy on 20 and Fergal O’Sullivan on 7. The Warriors now have two big trips to Dublin – this weekend against Eanna BC in Rathfarnham and the following weekend in Belfield where they will take on UCD Marian. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Boys U11 Academy team won the Lee Strand Academy Cup on Sunday after a very exciting final against St. Paul’s A in Presentation Gym, Killarney. St. Brendan’s led throughout, and in a great overall team performance with everyone contributing to the fine display, they got their deserved 37-29 win in the end. Well done to all the squad and their coaches. The U14s were unlucky to come up against a strong and determined TK Cougars side in their Cup final on Sunday. Having led at the end of the first quarter it looked like Brendan’s might go on to carve out a win. However Cougars wrestled back the lead before half time and went on to win out on a final score line of 47-41. Later on Sunday evening the U18s went down to a very good KCYMS side by 90-48 in the U18 Final. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: Once again there were great numbers at the Academy last Friday evening, despite the cold weather. Thanks to coaches for guiding the players through the session and to TC for doing the gate. The Dynamos Academy continues this Friday evening February 9th at the IT College Astro pitch from 6 to 7pm. U-14 Premier : With depleted numbers our U-14 side went under to a very talented Killarney Celtic team. Despite the reversal players such as James Moran John Kearney, Andy Rogers, Donagh Stephenson, Maurice O Connell and Sam Callinan all impressed. Twins Luke and Aidan Horgan from the U-13 squad were drafted into the team and both did not seem at all out of their depth. With only one league fixture remaining our focus will now turn to the Cup draw which is being done this week. Strictly Come Dancing: Congrats and well done to our U-13 Coach Terence O Connor who along with his dance partner Michelle Lynch won the Ballymac Strictly Come Dancing competition last weekend. Republic of Ireland: Well done to both Sean Kennedy and Leo Gaxha who played with the Rep of Ireland U-16 squads over the weekend and also to Andy Rogers who has made the Rep of Ireland U-14 squad recently.
between Shannon Town and Evergreen. Derek O’Shea will be the man in the middle this weekend with Anthony Morrison and Eddie O’Mahony running the lines. Kerry’s Oscar Traynor Trophy quarter final date with Sligo/ Leitrim has been announced. They will travel to the Showgrounds on Saturday evening March 3rd for a game that will kick off at 7.30pm. Team management David Hennessy and John Hegarty will be hoping to have a full squad on duty. All clubs please note that the next Delegate Meeting will take place in Mounthawk Park this Monday night at 8pm. A number of Cup draws will take place on the night. RUGBY NEWS: Tralee’s senior team continued their good form and in the Munster Junior League Division 2 all Kerry clash they just got the better of Killorglin 26-23. The game was tight all the way through with Killorglin leading but two late penalties from Jack Quilter gave Tralee the win. Tralee Women had a much bigger win as they saw off Bandon 35-0 in their League Division 1 qualifier. Laura Collins, Irene Dillane, Noreen Murphy, Siobhan Fleming and Nuala O’Connor all crossed the line for tries. STORIES FROM THE GAA WORLD: Before we look at the club news, well done to the Kerry Ladies who had an impressive win against Mayo 2-14 to 2-06. They will now take on Monaghan away this Sunday in a double header with the unbeaten men’s team in the League. The Kerry hurlers suffered a disappointing loss to Carlow in Tralee and now have a two week break to get things right before they take on Kildare. In College GAA there was a narrow but great win by Tralee CBS over Colaiste Cholim Ballincollig in the Corn Ui Mhuiri 0-10 to 1-06.They will face PS Corcha Dhuibhne in the all Kerry final.
PARK LIFE: It was a case of so close for the u13’s whose National Cup run has come to an end. They were 2-0 up early on thanks to goals from Cian O’Gara and Callum O’Sullivan. But in the end they went down 3-2. They still have plenty to look forward to as they are in the Regional Competition where they will play Avenue United from Clare. The u15’s and u16’s Division 2 had good wins in their Leagues. The Seniors had an impressive 5-0 win over Castlemaine in Denny Division 2B.

MIRACLE PRAYERS PRAYER TO ST VALENTINE Oh Glorious Saint of Love, You to whom God hath bequeathed the patronage of his greatest gift, look kindly too on those of us that suffer from the Sacred disease of Epilepsy. We pray thee that thouest wouldst espouse the healing power of Our Lord Jesus Christ upon all those who invoke thy esteem-ably held name, but most especially on your feast day of Feb 14th.
John O’Connor Services • Chimney Sweep • Window Cleaning • Gutter, Fascia & Soffit Cleaning • Power Cleaning ...and much more
St Valentine, we who venerate thee as the patron of Epileptics know, that contrary to the message of a billion paper cards, thou art not the charge of sinful lust, but rather the Saint of heavenly love. Timeless and true. Please lovingly bless the brain of those of us who would helplessly convulse in seizures and fits and who humbly seek thy glorious and healing intercession, we ask this through Christ Our Lord and in honour of your compassionate heart, Amen. M.L.
THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
