WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TÍR NA NÓG CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL PROMISES FUN GALORE FOR KIDS IN TRALEE THIS EASTER

TRALEE will take centre-stage when it comes to celebrating Easter in Kerry when hundreds of children take part in the seventh annual Tír na nÓg Children’s Festival from 21st to 28th March. A multitude of family-friendly events including egg hunts, Teddy Bears Picnic, Easterthemed camps, Puppet Shows and sightings of the elusive Easter Bunny have been planned to entertain children of all ages at various venues in Tralee. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “Easter in Tralee is a joyous time for children. Tralee is weather-proof all year round and this springtime eggs-travaganza always brings the best out of the town’s tourist attractions, accommodation providers and specialist retailers. We hope that families from home and away enjoy the Easter Holidays in Tralee and we encourage everyone to keep Tralee tidy during the festival.” Key event locations this year include Tralee Town Park, Tralee Bay Wetlands, Kerry County Museum, The Playdium, Crag Caves, Bowling Buddies, Aqua Dome, Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Siamsa Tíre Theatre, Tralee Regional Sports and Leisure Centre and Caball Toymaster. Two key events during this year’s Tír an nÓg Children’s Festival will require pre-registration - Kids Fancy Dress Fun Run on Easter Saturday, sponsored by Garveys Supervalu and a Fun event at The Playdium on Good Friday. Children under 12 are invited dust off their costumes and register for the Easter Fancy Dress Fun Run in Tralee Town Park on Saturday 26 March. The event will ‘eggs-plode’ into action from 12pm with a Zumba Warm-up with Linda Flanagan from Zumba Kerry before the run gets underway at 1pm. Prizes will be awarded to the best costumes while all the children will have a chance to get their faces painted and meet some colourful Disney characters and enjoy a post-run disco. Tickets are only €5 per child (Adults are free), adult supervision is required especially with younger children. Another great event with lots of prizes will take place at The Playdium, Mile Height, Tralee on Good Friday 25 March Taking place from 11am to 1pm on Good Friday 25th March. Kerry’s largest children’s indoor play centre will host a special event with face-painting, a duck hunt and a raffle. Admission is only €5 per child. Registration forms for both the Easter Fun Run in Tralee Town Park and the Kids Event at The Playdium are available from Tralee Chamber Alliance, 18 Denny Street, Tralee.Forms must be returned by Thursday 24th and Friday 25th March for events at The Playdium and the Fun Run respectively. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: DISCRIMINATION WHEN RENTING RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY Question Are advertisements saying that landlords won’t accept tenants getting Rent Supplement allowed? Answer Equality legislation applies to lettings and accommodation. The Equal Status Acts 2000-2015 ban certain kinds of discrimination. Broadly speaking, discrimination means that you receive less favourable treatment than other people in a comparable situation on grounds of gender, civil status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or membership of the Traveller community. Landlords cannot discriminate against potential tenants on these grounds. Since 1 January 2016, following an amendment to the Equal Status Acts, landlords cannot discriminate against tenants because they are getting Rent Supplement or any other social welfare payment, or a Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). This means that landlords can no longer state when advertising accommodation that Rent Supplement (or HAP) is not accepted and they cannot refuse to rent you accommodation because you are getting Rent Supplement, HAP or a social welfare payment. However if you are sharing with the home owner (under the Rent a Room Scheme, for example), a license agreement exists and the Acts do not apply. There are some other exemptions. KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL VISITS TOURISM IRELAND IN NEW YORK

Representatives of Kerry County Council, who were in New York for the St Patrick’s Day period, met with senior executives from Tourism Ireland in New York last week. They were briefed on Tourism Ireland’s extensive promotional programme for 2016, which is in full swing right now. Tourism Ireland aims to build on the success of 2015, which was the third record-breaking year in a row for Irish tourism from the United States. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “Tourism Ireland is undertaking an extensive programme of promotional activity again this year – to build on the success of 2015. Our ambition is to grow visitor numbers from the United States by a further +7% in 2016. “St Patrick’s Day traditionally marks the real start of the tourism season for us; our aim is to bring a smile to the faces of people everywhere and to convey the message that Ireland offers the warmest of welcomes and great fun, as well as wonderful scenery and John Griffin, Kerry County Council; Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland; Pat McCarthy, heritage. We took every opportunity to capitalise Mayor of Kerry; and Deirdre O’Brien, Tourism Ireland, in the Tourism Ireland office in New York. on Ireland’s heightened profile last week; the saturation coverage about Ireland at this time of year – across the airwaves, in newspapers and digital media – is an invaluable boost for our overall tourism marketing drive in 2016.” Tourism Ireland participated in and promoted the island of Ireland at a range of St Patrick’s Day events across the United States. Eyebrows are taking over the world! They’re one of the most lusted after facial features and top of every makeup brands newest product list. I am obsessed with eyebrows, they can change up your entire look and they frame your face. There are many different products and tools I use to maintain my brows the way I like them.

• BROW TREATMENT: To ‘treat’ my eyebrows I go to Jurga in Sean Taaffe Tralee. She is my absolute BROW

QUEEN. She knows exactly how to make your brows look amazing! Even though I live in Dublin now, I still only go to Jurga to get my brows done, I wouldn’t trust anyone else. In between visits to Jurga I just pluck any stray hairs that annoy me. BROW PRODUCTS: When I’m doing my makeup I ALWAYS fill in and shape my brows, always. I look back at pictures of when I didn’t and I cringe, it looks terrible, well on me anyway. I don’t use pencil when filling in my brows as I find I can achieve a more natural not so ‘drawn on’ look if I use either a shadow based or cream based product.

THE ESSENTIALS: For me, there are three must have products when it comes to my brows. 1. Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade: This is a cream based eyebrow product that I fill in my brows

using an angled brush. I got this in Sephora over in America but don’t worry, it’s available online at BeautyBay.com for €11.30 along with all the other products from this brand, so if you’re more into a pencilled brow they have the ‘brow wiz’ for that. This brand is amazing for all things brow so be sure to check it out! Anastasia Beverly Hills Angled Brush: I use an angled brush to apply my brow cream as I find it really gets that defined brow look. Obviously you can use any branded angled brush, but I really like the size and quality of the Anastasia Beverly Hills one. Blank Canvas do a fab double ended one with a brow brush on the other end. NYX Wonder Pencil: I use this pencil in the shade light just under my brows to clean them up a little and really define them as well as highlight my brow bone. The pencil is a really creamy texture so it’s easily blended out.

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! THIS WEEK I’M TALKING ALL ABOUT THE WEIGHING SCALES AND WEIGHING YOURSELF.

I’ve recently started weighing myself everyday, not because I’m focusing 100% on the number on the scale, but because I find personally it helps me stay on track instead of just avoiding weighing myself. But I don’t just focus on the scales, I take progress pics and measure myself too! Regardless of your specific goal, one of the easiest and most common ways of tracking your progress is by weighing yourself regularly. THE IMPORTANCE OF WEIGHING YOURSELF • It shows if things are working. Fat and muscle both weigh something, which means that losing fat will typically cause a decrease in body weight and building muscle will typically cause an increase in body weight. So what’s the best reason to weigh yourself regularly? To ensure that what you’re doing is actually working. Meaning, if your weight isn’t moving in the right direction for your goal, it’s a pretty good sign that your current diet/workout isn’t working and needs to be adjusted somehow. • It shows if things are working at the ideal rate they should be. In addition to just knowing if your body weight is moving in the right direction for your goal, there’s also the issue of whether your body weight is moving at the ideal rate for your goal. You see, depending on your exact goal and a few other factors specific to you and your body, there is a certain rate of weight loss and weight gain that is considered optimal. So what’s the second best reason to weigh yourself regularly? To ensure that your body weight is changing at the speed it should be (not too slow, not too fast). THE PROBLEMS WITH WEIGHING YOURSELF • “Weight” is more than just fat or muscle. There would be no downside to weighing yourself if the weight you lose and gain was guaranteed to always be either fat or muscle. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Your body weight can and very often does change as a result of a loss or gain in muscle, fat, water, glycogen, poop, food intake and more. That means daily fluctuations in body weight (plus extra monthly fluctuations for women) are extremely common and normal. • “Weight” alone tells us nothing about the composition of that weight. The number on the scale only allows you to track your weight… not the composition of that weight. And since most of us want to lose fat (but not muscle) and gain muscle (but not fat), the composition of the weight we lose or gain is often more important than anything else. That’s why most people should do more than just weigh themselves to monitor progress. For example… use measurements, body fat percentage, pictures, mirror and so on. • Normal daily fluctuations in weight can drive a person crazy. Some people just aren’t aware of the fact that it’s normal for their body weight to fluctuate, and this can easily cloud that person’s judgement about the effectiveness of their diet/workout and generally drive them insane. WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN? It means that you should weigh yourself regularly because it’s a useful tool for tracking progress, but at the same time realize that the numbers you are seeing aren’t always an accurate representation of what your body is doing. WEIGHING YOURSELF EVERY DAY Most people think weighing yourself every day is the LEAST accurate way because of those normal daily weight fluctuations I mentioned before. In a way, this is true. But, if you make one small change to the way you do it, you’ll see that daily weigh-ins are actually the MOST accurate way to do it. Let me explain… • If you weigh yourself every day and make decisions based on these day-to-day changes, then you’re being a complete dumbass. Because of all of that daily weight fluctuation stuff I keep talking about, this would be the worst way to do it. • HOWEVER, if you weigh yourself every day and then take the AVERAGE at the end of the week (and base your decisions on THAT weekly number)… then you’ll have the most accurate figure you could possibly get. Doing it this way actually serves to eliminate the potential of daily weight fluctuations throwing things off. WEIGHING YOURSELF ONCE A WEEK In terms of accuracy, weighing yourself once per week isn’t perfect. It’s certainly not useless… but it’s just not as good as weighing yourself every day and taking the weekly average. However, despite not being as accurate as possible, once per week might still be the right option for certain people. Which people? The ones who will go a bit crazy watching the day-to-day changes in weight that would come with daily weigh-ins. So how often should you weigh yourself? Easter is upon us and the Sunday of Easter is always a big family day. So a big roast is needed and either ham or pork is a tradition at Easter . HONEY-WHISKEY-GLAZED HAM

The sweet, sticky glaze on this juicy ham is subtly spiced with fennel, coriander and star anise

SMOKY GLAZED HAM with Red Pepper Jelly

INGREDIENTS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

One 8-pound, bone-in whole or spiral-cut smoked ham, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon fennel seeds 1 tablespoon coriander seeds 4 star anise pods 4 bay leaves 2 cinnamon sticks 2 garlic cloves One 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced 1 dried red chilli 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest 2 cups whiskey 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey

Preheat the oven to 160°. Place the ham in a large roasting pan and add 1 cup of water. Cover the pan with foil and bake the ham for about 2 hours and 45 minutes, basting occasionally with any accumulated juices, until an thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers 64°. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine the sugar with 2 tablespoons of water and cook over moderately high heat, swirling the pan occasionally, until a lightly golden caramel forms, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and quickly add the fennel seeds, coriander seeds, star anise, bay leaves, cinnamon, garlic, ginger, chilli and orange zest; let sit for about 20 seconds, until fragrant. Carefully add the whiskey, soy sauce and honey. Return the glaze to a simmer and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Remove the foil and brush the ham with the glaze. Roast for 30 minutes longer, glazing every 10 minutes, until the top is lightly caramelized. Transfer the ham to a platter and let rest for 15 minutes. Skim the fat from the pan juices and transfer them to a bowl. Serve the ham with the pan juices

3 cups chicken stock 3 cups water 2 cups cola, 1 1/2 cups Pinot Noir or other dry red wine 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup dark honey 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 sweet onion, thinly sliced 1/2 cup thinly sliced fresh ginger (2 ounces) 1 carrot, thinly sliced 5 small dried red chilli 1 1/2 teaspoons coriander seeds, crushed 1 1/2 teaspoons fennel seeds, crushed 1 1/2 teaspoons black peppercorns, crushed One 8-pound, bone-in smoked ham Hartys Red Pepper Jelly, for serving

METHOD 1.

In a large saucepan, bring the stock, water, cola, wine, sugar, honey, vinegar, onion, ginger, carrot and chilli to a boil. Simmer over moderately high heat for 20 minutes. Add the coriander and fennel seeds and peppercorns and simmer until reduced to 4 1/2 cups, 15 to 20 minutes longer. Strain the sauce through a fine sieve into a heatproof bowl. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°. Set the ham skin side up in a 12-by-15-inch roasting pan and pour half of the sauce on top. Roast the ham for 1 hour, basting with the sauce in the pan every 15 minutes. Pour the remaining sauce over the ham and roast for about 1 hour and 30 minutes longer, basting the ham every 15 minutes, until glazed . Transfer the ham to a carving board and let rest for 15 minutes. Discard the skin from the ham before slicing. Serve the ham with hartys Red Pepper Jelly. Recipes by

The Public Participation Sessions in the Tralee Community Garden Project begin again this season on March the 26th 2016 with the An Taisce Spring Clean. Volunteers will be welcomed at the Project located in Tralee Town Park from 10.30 am. Tralee Community Garden Project, which encompasses Tralee Community Orchard, is the only Public Participation Integration Project through gardening and related topics in the country. Tralee Community Garden has Public Open Access 24/7 and all participants get to share in the harvest. Tralee Community Garden Project is a not for profit Community and Voluntary Initiative with a Strategic SteeringCommittee drawn from the Educational, Corporate, Political, Voluntary, Tourism, and Public Sectors. Volunteers can participate for 5 minutes or five years the choice is purely up to them! There are no taxes or fees for participation but volunteers are requested to wear appropriate footwear. All tools, equipment and supplies are provided. Children must be accompanied by a guardian. The garden is a fair weather facility. The primary aim of the project is to offer a Community Integration and Participation Platform accessible and inclusive of all and is open to Indigenous, Foreign, local, National, International, Resident or Transient Peoples - basically everyone. EASTER 1916 COMMEMORATION EVENTS IN TRALEE TAKES PLACE APRIL 22ND-24TH

“Plans are at an advanced stage for the Easter Commemoration events in Tralee on April 22nd-24th hosted by a local committee Coiste Comóradh 1916 Trá Lí. A choral recital takes place in the Square on Friday April 22nd. On Saturday, 23rd April, the Square will be awash with old time activities including stalls, machinery,vehicles,irish music and dancing etc. Also featured will be a sketch by Na Gaeil Scór na nÓg competitors. On Sunday 24th April will see a grand parade featuring units of people marching as Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan and Fianna. A number of bands will also attend. Several relatives of those who died from at home and abroad have contacted the organising committee indicating their intention to attend. The parade will assemble at the Rink, Basin Road at 12.45pm on the Sunday where a bugler will sound the assembly as happened outside Liberty Hall in 1916. After a brief ceremony,the parade will then March to the O Rahilly Villas on Strand Street and then thence to the Cahill Memorial in Cahills Park. After wreath laying ceremonies it will then proceed to Páirc an Phiarsaigh. Here the attendents will be addressed, wreaths will be laid at the Pearse monument. The last post will be sounded, and the ceremonies will conclude with the singing of Amhrán na Bhfiann. This is a neutral event and the general public are asked to march in the parade and participate in events to commemorate those who died in 1916. A popular live music venue with bars and a small hotel close to the Central Bank on Dublin’s Dame Street has attracted bids of over €4 million since it went for sale through agent CBRE. Sweeney’s first opened for business in 2008 and has proven a popular attraction for locals as well as tourists because of its proximity to Trinity College, Dublin Castle and the Guinness Storehouse. CBRE initially invited offers over €3.5 million for the six-storey over basement building with bars at basement, ground and first floor levels and a fully fitted catering kitchen and stores on the second floor. There are 15 ensuite bedrooms on the top three floors.

MAYFAIR RESTAURANTS HOPE TO CASH IN ON SOARING WEST END RENTS

Signs are on that London property is nearing its peak when Mayfair’s most famous restaurants are looking to cash in on soaring rents in the city’s most expensive enclave. This week the Financial Times reported that three restaurants – including two with two Michelin stars – are quietly looking to sell their leases. The Square, a two-Michelin star restaurant, has been sounding out buyers and looking at moving out of the area after 25 years. Meanwhile, Hibiscus, another two-Michelin star restaurant, is also seeking buyers, while Princess Garden, a Chinese restaurant in the area since 1983, is reported to have marketed its lease for £2 million. The culinary rush to vacate the area may have been prompted by the arrival last year of two multimillion-pound destinations: Sexy Fish and Park Chinois, which prompted restaurant rents and premiums to soar. Caprice Holdings is reported to have spent more than £15 million transforming an old NatWest Bank on Berkeley Square into Sexy Fish while Alan Yau spent “tens of millions” decorating Park Chinois. Other restaurants that have left the area include Brasserie Chavot and Pescatori, which closed last week after more than 40 years on Dover Street.

PYLONS HAVE “NO SIGNIFICANT EFFECT” ON PROPERTY PRICES

Pylons built near homes have little or no effect on property prices, a new study has claimed. The research, which was commissioned by infrastructure company Eirgrid, found that the presence of pylons or overhead electricity lines had “no significant impact” on the sale prices of residential and farm properties around the country. The report contradicts opponents of pylons who have long criticised the presence of them and power lines built close to homes. The report, which focused only on what effect pylons may have on property prices and no other potential ramifications, found that the fear about pylons hurting property prices was incorrect. The “perception of potential decreases in sales value as a result of high-voltage overhead lines close to property far outweighs the reality borne out in actual sales data,” it said “Internationally, approximately half of the available studies on the issue found no impact on property values; the remaining 50pc were generally low, in the region of 3pc to 6pc,” it said. The report, which was compiled by Insight Statistical Consulting and Corr Commercial Land, looked at published international research, sales data for residential and farm property properties in Ireland, and a survey of the views of 45 Irish estate agents. Even though the statistics showing almost no change to house sale prices when pylons were near by, estate agents made clear they felt that wires and other infrastructure projects would hurt sale prices, despite little evidence of that being the case. “In the estate agent survey we looked at nine types of types of infrastructure projects, and the agents expressed a view that there would be a negative impact on property value located close to any major infrastructural development,” said Professor Walsh ,who is chair of statistics and director of the Centre for Health Decision Science at University of Limerick “However, when we reviewed the sales data from the same estate agents of property and land situated close to transmission lines, it did not support this anecdotal view,” he said. Pylons have long been among the most controversial of infrastructure projects in Ireland, particularly in rural parts of the country where there has been fierce opposition. (Sunday Independent)

Introduction Carzone.ie has today released the sixth edition of the Carzone.ie Motoring Report which reveals that 36% of people in Kerry bought a car in 2015, compared to the national average of 42.5%. The reports also shows that a Ford Focus was the most searched for car by people living in Kerry. The bi-annual index studies trends in the Irish motoring market by analysing data from the 111 million searches carried out on Carzone.ie in 2015, as well as in depth survey of 1,700 Irish motorists nationwide. In terms of what Kerry motorists were searching for specifically, Ford topped the polls for most popular car marque. Ford was closely followed by Volkswagen in second and Toyota in third. When it comes to the most popular model of car, the Ford Focus tops the poll (compared to the national number one, the Volkswagen Golf.) The colour black remains extremely popular amongst Kerry motorists accounting for some 35% of colour searches. Fuel type is still a critical part of the buying process for Kerry motorists. On a national level, the Carzone.ie Motoring Report shows that 78% of searches in 2015 were for diesel cars while only 17% of searches on Carzone.ie were for petrol models. The Carzone.ie Motoring Report reveals that the top financial concerns for Irish motorists are fuel costs, road tax and the cost of insurance. In Kerry, this is interestingly different with an emphasis on road tax, followed by insurance and then fuel. The research from Carzone.ie also shows that 31% of people in Kerry are either unsure, or have no knowledge of current tax bands. On the topic of insurance, 54% of Irish motorists felt insurance costs would be the biggest obstacle in affording a car in the next 12 months. Meanwhile 31% of motorists in Kerry said they are not satisfied with their current insurance premium. Research also pointed towards a lack of knowledge of car financing, with 51% of Kerry motorists not fully aware of car finance options available to them when buying a car.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BRYAN COOPER THE TOAST OF TRALEE: Looking a social media it looks like the whole of Tralee backed Bryan Cooper in the Gold Cup. It was a wonderful sight for all Kerry sports fans to see him winning the Blue Ribbon of National Hunt racing and doing it in such style. Bryan has packed a lot into his short career and it is easy to forget he is still only 23. The son of Tom and Geraldine has also experienced the down side of sport with a serious leg injury but thankfully is now back to the top of his game. Bryan worked with his father, Dessie Hughes and Kevin Prendergast and it was at Cheltenham 2013 where he rode 3 winners that put him amongst the top jockeys. He took over as retained jockey for Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud in January 2014 and now just over 2 years later he has a Gold Cup win on Don Cossack on his CV. His father Tom said it was great for the family, the town of Tralee and all of Kerry and his is right. And I am sure those hundreds who backed him in Tralee and in Kerry will agree – but I am not sure about the bookies!! And with Fairyhouse next week I am sure we will be seeing lots more of Bryan Cooper passing the winning post in front. KERRY HURLERS LET DOWN BY THE SYSTEM: Firstly I know the argument that it was all agreed beforehand and that the system is the system but in truth the Kerry hurlers have been let down by the powers that be. What they have achieved in their first year in Division 1B has been huge for the game and the players and management deserve great credit. They came within a few minutes of making the quarter finals and I understand as they were celebrating their win over Offaly they were told that they had made the Last 8. That would have set up a game against the master Kilkenny. But with Wexford late win it is Offaly who now face the Cats and Kerry must face Laois in the Division 1B play-off. The loser plays against the winners of the Division 2A final which Carlow and Westmeath contest. However the crazy part is that Kerry ended the League on 4 points and Laois didn’t pick up any. It is vital for counties like Kerry to play at the highest possible level and Kerry have worked hard to get up to Division 1 B where they faced some of the big counties. Getting 4 points and not finishing bottom should see them safe. It should be the team that finished bottom goes into the relegation play-off. The unthinkable can happen where Laois beat Kerry and stay up on 0 points while Kerry could go down on 4. It is the same as having League finals (and of course I know that the GAA is not the only place where League finals are held!). Of course it is done for the reason of having more big gates. But it does leave situations at the top the team with the most points might not win the final and therefore lose the League while at the bottom a

team with more points than one below them can go down. But of course for the Kerry hurlers let’s hope it does not come to that. They go into their games against Laois on Saturday April 2nd high on confidence. It is over 50 years since a Kerry hurling side beat Offaly and to do this in the spiritual home of Offaly hurling in Birr was a great achievement. Now hopefully a huge crowd comes to Austin Stack Park for the 5pm throw in and Kerry can enjoy a second season at this high level and who knows maybe next season the scoring Gods smile on Kerry and they do reach the quarter final. EGAN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: If you think a Kerry hurler can’t beat a Kilkenny or Clare player then think again. John Egan, St Brendan’s Ardfert beat off the Cat’s TJ Reidy and Conor McGrath to win the GAA.ie Hurling Player of the Week with 35% of the poll. CATHAL’S STILL FASTEST UP THE HILL: The Annual St Patrick’s Day Tralee Cycling Club hosted Lee Strand Hill Climb saw Cathal Moynihan retain his title. The former Olympic rower now stars with Tralee Manor West iBike and held onto the Billy Nolan Cup for the second year in a row in a time of 11.51. The climb is from the roundabout on the Tralee / Milltown Road to the crest of the hill saw Killarney’s Conor Kissane take the runner up spot from and Manor West iBike rider George Doyle. In the u12 section Kingdom CC took the second and third spots with Adam Lenihan and Zac Boyle respectively but the winner was Killarney CC’s Shane Galvin. Sean Barrett (Manor West iBike) was the fastest u14 up the hill in the u14’s followed by Killarney CC’s Ethan Slattery and Kingdom’s Ciaran Commane in third. It was an all Tralee Manor West iBike top three in u16’s with Kieran Coggins winning from Patrick White and Robbie Scott. Currow CC’s Suzanne O’Sullivan took the Ladies climb in 16.16.90 followed by Tralee’s Ciara Tierney. Martina Eager from Killarney CC was the only u10 rider and she completed the climb in 31.42 on a mountain bike. TRALEE RIDERS STAR ACROSS THE BORDER: Tralee Manor West iBike’s Cathal Moynihan got the perfect preparation for Ras Mumhan with a win in the Derry Crowley Memorial Race in Blarney. Moda Kingdom Endurance had a good day with John Brosnan in 3rd, Eddie Barry in 5th, Owen Cummins 7th and Roy Madden taking 8th. Killorglin CC’s Michael O’Shea was the 1st unplaced A2 rider. In the Ray Looney Memorial Masters Race Tralee Manor West iBikes Gerry McCarthy in 2nd followed by Mark Prendeville in 3rd. Ross Culloty (Manor West iBike) had his first big win when he took the Kay Stratton Memorial A4 Race. TRALEE TEAM’S READY FOR RAS: The 4 Day Kerry Group International Ras Mumhan will see one of the biggest fields in its history take part over the four days of Easter Weekend. The Ras follows the regular route

Saturday’s action move to Kenmare and West Cork with the action down in South Kerry on Sunday before the traditional finishing stage in Killorglin early on Monday. There is plenty for Tralee cycling fans to follow for the weekend with Sean Leacy heading up Aqua Blue. Team Moda Kingdom Enduarance have John Brosnan, Eddie Barry and Denis Dunworth in their squad. ACTION ON THE OCHE BEFORE THE EASTER BREAK: With this Friday being Good Friday the Tuborg Darts League will obviously be taking a break before returning on April 1st. In the Group games before the break The Huddle A defeated McElligots Bar 5-2 while O’Connors Bar just saw off New Kingdom Bar 4-3. The Railway Bar were the winners on Group B defeating The Complex 5-2. In Group C Boland’s Bar were 4-3 winners over Dew Drop while Parker’s B defeated the Huddle C 5-2. WINTER SERIES OF SWIMS COMES TO AN END: The Winter Series of Swims comes to an end on Easter Sunday at 11am where the Easter Hamper will also be raffled. SAILING CALENDAR BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE: As we head into the summer the calendar of events at the Tralee Bay Sailing Club is beginning to take shape. The Fenit Keel 60th Anniversary Regatta takes place on June 11th and 12th. There will be up to 6 races each day including a costal race if the weather permits. The 1st gun will be at 3pm on Saturday and at 11am on Sunday. There are lots of prizes to be sailed for including the Dr Denis Buckley Memorial Trophy. The Tralee Bay Sailing Club will be a busy spot for the weekend with food and entertainment on offer. ST BRENDAN’S / OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES: In basketball the u11 mixed team competed in the County Competition last Sunday and despite being drawn in a very tough group – Ballymac, Duagh, Rock Street and Ballydonoghue. While the team did not win any medals they put in some great displays for a young squad. The club thanks Caroline Casey for all the coaching. PITCH AND PUTT SEASON TEE’S OFF: On Sunday March 20th the Newmarket Pitch & Putt Club hosted the Paul O’Sullivan Memorial Kerry 3-Ball Scramble. The hole-in-one winners (both on the same hole) were Deerpark’s Paul Cronin and Castleisland’s John McCarthy. The second nett winning team consisted of Deerpark duo Gearoid Cronin and Kieran fitzpatrick along with Newmarket’s W.J. Buckley. The gross prize was won by a team headed up by County Chairman Deerpark’s Damien Fleming with club mate Robbie O’Brien and Newmarket’s Con Buckley who had a brilliant twenty-six under total. But the overall winners with a fantastic sixtyseven nett were Castleisland’s Aidan O’Connor and Geneagle’s Sean Ashe. ALL STAR FOR RHEANNE: Team Garvey’s Tralee Rheanne O’Shea was rewarded for her excellent season by winning an All Star for the Women’s Division 1. Rheanne was the outstanding player for the squad who had and up and down year with the loss of coach Mark Bernsen during the season. Former Tralee Imperials Emma Sherwood is also celebrating as she has been called up to the Irish Squad for their forthcoming European tournament. North Kerry’s Aine McKenna had a great week as she captained Team Montenotte Hotel to the League title – a record 7th win in the top Division. NO LUCK FOR TRALEE BOXERS: Kerry boxing clubs enjoyed a good weekend at the Munster Championships held in Limerick. Kerry fighters won 6 Munster titles with the Cashenvale BC taking 3, Trojan BC winning 2 and 1 Munster title was won by Sliabh Luachra. The Tralee Boxing Club had a number of boxers in action in the Southside Club but sadly the results just went against them. Daniel Burke lost to Willie O’Reilly in the Boy 2 33kg section while Robin McCarthy lost out in the Junior 1 63kg. On Sunday Jonathan McCarthy lost out in the final of the Boy 3 36kg and Patrick McCarthy went down in his Boy 3 44kg final. There was no luck either for Richard McCarthy in the Boy 4 46kg or Jamie McVeigh in the Boy 4 66kg title fight.

Tralee’s CBS, The Green welcomed over 1,000 people to ‘The KUBE’ sponsored by Lee Strand Protein+ Milk and Moriarty Construction in the Brandon Hotel & Conference Centre. Kerry GAA star Darran O’Sullivan beat off a host of GAA stars, radio stars and local politicians to win €2,000 for his charity The Irish Heart Foundation. The runners-up were Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper in second place, Damien Ryall in third place and Ivan Parker in fourth place who all received €200 for their chosen charity. Principal Ms Anne O’Callaghan stated “The ‘KUBE’ was a great success and the event will bring us another step closer to constructing an All-weather Pitch on our school grounds.

CAMOGIE NEWS: The Kerry camogie team’s good start to the season came to an end with a 2-09 to 0-06 point home defeat to Armagh. The game was at John Mitchels and the visitors started much the quicker and were ahead from early on. By half time Armagh led 2-05 to 0-04 and the second half didn’t get any better for the Kingdom. In the Limerick League Round 3 it finished Cillard 5-09 to 1.1. Kerry will host Westmeath in the All Ireland Minor C Championship this Saturday and in the National League the seniors are away to Cavan with the venues and throw-in times for both games to be confirmed.

THE GREEN SMASHES THEIR WAY TO BADMINTON GLORY: There were celebrations in the Green CBS as another All Ireland title came to Tralee. This time it was in the u14 Boys 1st Year Badminton competition. The team was made up of David Smith, Seamus Bradley, Kevin Griffin and Sean Kennedy. Their teacher Aine Knightly and school principal Aine O’Callaghan were on hand to lead the celebrations.

PARNELLS NEWS: The Tralee Parnells Hurling and Camogie Easter Camp saw a great turn out of youngsters from 7 to 14 years of age and they really enjoyed getting to know the game. Marching: The club was delighted with the turn out for the St Patricks Day Parade and it was great ot see so many children along the route trying to beat our goalies and we might even make a keeper our of John Brassil TD, Norma Foley and Graham Spring MCC who all lined the goals to be shot at by all comers. All the underage teams train as usual this week as their seasons get underway. The seniors started their County League Division 3 campaign with a game at home to Beale. There was nothing between the sides and it ended 1-11 apiece with Ger Gorman getting the goal from a penalty spot. There no League match this weekend as some players are involved in the SFC qualifier representing St Brendan’s Board against Shannon Rangers this Friday at 7.30pm in Austin Stack Park. Felie: St Pats are honoured to have been honoured as one of the host teams for Feile Peil Na Nog South West 2016 and preparations are underway. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NOTES: The seniors got their Credit Union Senior County League Division 1 campaign off to a great start by defeating Glenbeigh /Glencar 0-14 to 0-12. Rahillys enjoyed the best of the first half and were 12 points to 9 up at the break. Things tightened up in the second half but the Tralee side held on to win. The 2nd round is at home to the Legion on Sunday next the 26th at 5pm. Minors game off: The minor fixture against Listowel Emmets was postponed and they are due to play Austin Stack this Saturday at 3pm. The club is delighted for club man Jack Savage and his Kerry u21 teammates on reaching the Munster Final. Annual Club Mass: The Annual Mass for deceased members of the club, their families and all their friends and members of the club will be held on Friday, April 1st at 7.30pm in the Healy Room. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 10,20,23 and 24 with the jackpot now at e3500.
