ALLERGY TESTING BY DR DAVID BUCKLEY Many conditions can be allergic in origin. Obvious examples include asthma, eczema and hay fever. However, many other conditions may have an allergic origin including tummy pains, diarrhoea, constipation, weight loss, coeliac disease, rashes, sinusitis and headaches. Some conditions such as depression, fatigue, arthritis and fibromyalgia are rarely due to allergies. The best way to deal with allergies is to find out what you are allergic to and avoid it. We can test for sensitivity to the following: • Food Allergies – milk, wheat, eggs, nuts, seeds, fish, shellfish, etc • Allergies to prescribed or over the counter medications • Animal hair and dander – cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, feathers, etc • Pollen – trees, grass, weeds, etc • Mould • Dust • House Dust Mite • Gluten • Contact allergies to make-up, jewellery, clothing, chemicals, latex, rubber, metals, etc

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Maura Sheehy, winner of the Florist of the Year at the Irish Wedding Awards 2018 Learning while Laughing Studying in VTOS Tralee was a very positive experience for me. The first thing that springs to mind when I fondly look back at my days there is the fun we had. We definitely spent more time laughing than learning but somehow the work also got done! Meeting people from different cultures, sharing their life experiences broadened by mind and allowed me to build my confidence. Returning to formal education can be daunting especially after so many years out of the

workforce. Tralee VTOS was very welcoming and I received great support to complete my studies. One of my favourite things about studying in Tralee VTOS was the diversity of culture it offered. I met people from different cultures, a great mix of students. After leaving Tralee VTOS, I used the skills I learned to set up my own business called “Maura’s Cottage Flowers”. It helped me to have confidence to meet with people, to promote and grow my business. Also, I

am now involved in making presentations to groups, writing gardening articles and promoting outdoor classrooms in the Farmer’s Journal. It’s still not easy but I am now better able to cope after my VTOS experience. I would highly recommend VTOS Tralee to all.

It provided a safe environment to build confidence. I met lovely people of different ages from many different countries.

New million euro Gleann LÍ extension KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: SENIORS ALERT SCHEME Question I am a pensioner and live with my daughter who works full-time. I am on my own a lot of the time and I’m worried about my safety. I would like to get a personal alarm but I can’t afford one.

Brendan Griffin TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport officially turned the sod today (14th May 2018) on the site of Coláiste Gleann Lí post-primary school. This marks the commencement of extensive building works, valued at €1.1 million, by Kerry Education and Training Board which will see Coláiste Gleann Lí- Post Primary School extended, refurbished and upgraded. The extension to the school building will house an ICT/ Creative Arts Centre as well as a host of specialist classrooms ensuring that Coláiste Gleann Lí will become a market leader in the delivery of an innovative and creative ICT-led education. The construction works will also include changing facilities and flood lighting for the existing on-site astro turf pitch. The commencement of building works was welcomed by Chief Executive Officer of Kerry Education and Training Board, Mr. Colm McEvoy in the presence of Director of Schools, Ms. Ann O’ Dwyer, Chairperson of the Board, Mr. Jim Finucane, Principal of Coláiste Gleann Lí, Mr. Richard Lawlor and Deputy Principal, Liam McGill as well as representatives from the Parents’ Council and Students’ Council. These plans mark the second phase of a two phased development process, part one of the ambitious project was completed in 2014 and saw the refurbishment of a cross section of specialist classrooms. Mr. Richard Lawlor, Principal of Coláiste Gleann Lí welcomed the commencement of the project as a recognition of the growth of the school since 2014. He welcomed the extension to the school describing it as highly necessary given the unprecedented increase in enrolments in recent times. Mr. Lawlor explained the reason for the marked increase in enrolments, “Our favourable class sizes mean that we are the only post primary school in Tralee that can offer the highest level of individual and personalised attention to students, ensuring that each student realises their full potential”. The Chairperson of the Board of Management Cllr. Terry O Brien in welcoming the sod turning by Minister Brendan Griffin he stated “we are delighted that this building project is commencing on site. The Board and Staff in consultation with Kerry ETB have worked hard in recent years in ensuring that this building project became a reality. When completed these works will provide much needed facilities for the staff and students. We look forward to the completion of the works over the next year and the continued growth and development of Coláiste Gleann Lí.” 12

Answer The Seniors Alert Scheme gives support to provide and install monitored personal alarm systems to older people of limited means. The scheme aims to support older people to continue to live securely and independently in their homes. The scheme is available through local community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations registered with Pobal, the non-profit company that administers the scheme. The personal alarm is worn as a pendant around your neck or around your wrist like a watch and connects to a base unit in your home. When the alarm is activated, it automatically rings a helpline, which is open 24 hours a day, all year round. A helpline operator talks to you through the base unit and decides whether to alert a local volunteer responder or, if necessary, the emergency services. The alarm monitoring service is free for the first year. After the first year, you pay an annual monitoring fee. Charges vary by provider and the type of alarm or pendant. People aged 65 or over with limited means are eligible for the scheme. You must also be either living alone, living alone for most of the day, living with someone who also meets the eligibility criteria, or caring for someone else in your household. You must be able to benefit from the equipment being supplied and willing to maintain contact with the group administering the scheme. The equipment is supplied and installed for free, however you must return it to the registered group if no longer needed. Contact the local group administering the scheme in your area to apply. St Brendans .... Ready For The Runway! St Brendan’s National School, Blennerville are taking to the catwalk shortly for the first time, as they are busily preparing for their Fashion Show fundraiser. The event will take place in Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Thursday May 31st next and promises to be a fantastic night of entertainment, fashion and fun for all the family. The event has been planned for some time, and the behind the scenes work is almost complete. Excitement is building in the school, particularly among the students themselves, who will be modelling on the night. An impressive 21 local shops will be showcasing on the night, with a wide range of fashion which is sure to appeal to all audiences. There will be a selection of children’s wear, menswear and ladieswear on show on the night, ranging from sportswear to formal and occasion wear. Although the main purpose of the event is to raise funds for the school, the entire school community is looking forward to a night of celebration. Parents, teachers and children will get a chance to come 16

together and acknowledge the wonderful and unique sense of community which the school is very proud of. To that effect, it will be the students, staff and parents themselves who will be modelling the clothes on the night. Preparations are underway, and there is a fabulous buzz of excitement around the school in anticipation of a fantastic night. Deirdre Walsh, who is a parent of the school, will be acting as MC on the night. There will be some outstanding prizes up for grabs on the night, including a two night break at The Muckross Park Hotel, Killarney. The children of St Brendan’s NS are also creating some of their own fashion to showcase, in the form of junk to funk couture, and millinery pieces. HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018 Summer is fast approaching so it’s time to dust down the barbecue and dig out the tongs. Just around the corner are long summer evenings filled with friends, family, beers and smoke-filled gardens as the first steak hits the coals. Here are our top ten tips to make sure your barbecue goes off without a hitch. TO HELP YOU 1.TOOLS BECOME A SERIOUS BARBECUE CONNOISSEUR

If you want to move from beginner to seasoned barbecue chef we’ve got a few tools that will help. A long handled pair of tongs make moving heavier cuts easy and safe. The extra length of the tongs keep your arms further away from the grill, reducing the chance of any nasty burns. A temperature probe is a great investment for outdoor cooking as it can be harder to tell if meat is cooked through. Make your own herb brush to add extra flavour by gathering your chosen herbs (we like rosemary, thyme and parsley) and attaching them to the end of a wooden spoon with some twine. Simply dip the herbs in some olive oil and brush over your meats before grilling. We like to use a grilling basket when barbecuing flat fish like whole plaice. Secure your meat or fish in the basket and place on top of the grill for an easy, even cook. And the final tool for the barbecue connoisseur are barbecue gloves. Their heat resistant material keep your hands safe from the flames so you can move hot pans and food or even rearrange the coals.

PREPARATION IS EVERYTHING

Working out how much meat you need is key. A sausage, a burger and a lamb skewer per person is a good starting point. If you do over-cater the leftovers make for an easy mid-week meal. Burgers and fish don’t tend to keep very well, but chicken, steak and chops do. Sausages and skewers are a great idea if you’re catering for kids. Chop up the sausages into more manageable pieces once cooked so they can eat as little or as much as they want. . Sides and condiments are key. Cold meats, salads, pies and cheeses are guaranteed crowd pleasers. . peppercorn sauce for your steaks to your BBQ staples like horseradish and mustard.

3.MARINATE THAT MEAT

Inject some instant flavour into your cuts by marinating them. Marinating overnight is the best way to ensure the flavours permeate the meat.sticky BBQ Chicken Thighs, Teriyaki Beef Kebabs, or fiery Piri Piri Chicken drumsticks or Wings. Don’t forget to shake off any excess marinade before the meat hits the grill, especially if it contains oil. If it’s too saucy the meat is more likely to burn or flare causing that bitter smoky flavour.

4.BAVOID FRIDGE CHILL

Taking the raw meat or fish out of the fridge at least 20 minutes before barbecuing gives it long enough to lose its chill and get down to room temperature. If the meat is

too cold when it hits the grill there’s a danger it could burn on the outside before it’s cooked through to the middle. This is especially important with chicken, sausages and any other pork for obvious reasons. It’s still important to do this with beef burgers and steaks to ensure your meat is as rare or well done as you like it.

5.CHOOSING YOUR CHARCOAL

Charcoal choice is important. Lump charcoal is fast lighting with a burn time of around an hour, a good choice if you’re cooking a wide range of meat. Briquettes on the other hand can burn for up to three hours at a consistent temperature, making them ideal for grilling roasting joints. Charcoal can infuse different flavours into your meat depending on which tree it has come from. Charcoal created from oak trees can release subtle smoky caramel tones, while coal from orange wood carries a deep marmalade flavour that compliments duck, chicken and turkey really nicely. We like to soak oak wood chips in water and put them on the hot coals when we’re ready to barbecue. The water creates steam which sends a gorgeous oaky flavour up into the meat. This works especially well with pork, as do hickory wood chips. Try apple wood for a sweeter flavour.

AND INDIRECT COOKING METHODS 6.DIRECT

Direct cooking is the most common method on the barbecue. It’s great for thin cuts like steaks, burgers, fish and sausages as they’re placed directly over the heat. One of the main advantages of direct cooking is the high temperatures within the barbecue create the perfect conditions for searing, resulting in great flavour and texture to the meat. Indirect cooking methods are a little more advanced than direct cooking. Place the meat next to, not directly over, the heat source. Once they’re warm separate your coals into two piles at opposite ends of the grill. Place a drip tray underneath the grill, between the coals. Your meat goes on the grill in the space over the drip tray. With this method the barbecue acts like an oven so is ideal for cuts like roasting joints that require slow cooking on a lower heat.

7. TEST THE MEAT

An obvious one but so important, especially if you’re cooking for a lot of people. It can be hard to tell how well-done meat is on the barbecue by sight alone. Be sure to cut into chicken and pork and check whether the juices run clear, or invest in a temperature probe.

8.REST THE MEAT

Once the meat is cooked to your liking it’s a good idea to rest it for a few minutes. This allows it to reabsorb its juices and become more tender. We like to rest our meat on a warmed, foil covered tray on the top rack of the BBQ, away from direct heat. The bigger the cut, the longer you rest it. This is also when we make sure Arthur the dog is out of the way.

And finally, be prepared for the weather to turn on you. With Irish temperatures temperamental to say the least, have your griddle pans and oven prepped to finish off any items that get caught in a sudden downpour.

10. OUR RECOMMENDED CUTS

We love to barbecue steak and would always recommend Ribeye as the grass fed fats are well suited to a hot grill. The fats melt, keeping the steak nice and juicy. Meat skewers are also one of our favourite things . We would also recommend a selection of burgers. It’s nice to offer a variety of flavours alongside the traditional beef, Garlic and Thyme Lamb Burgers, Wild Venison burgers and Beef and Chorizo burgers. As for vegetables, we love the classics like corn on the cob and vegetable kebabs made with pepper, courgette and tomato. If you fancy something sweet after the main event try some grilled pineapple, it’s delicious!

There is something VERY important happening in Ireland next week - The Referendum On The 8th Amendment. If you are registered & of age PLEASE make sure you use your vote! And encourage those around you to use theirs. Organize a post vote brunch or pints with your friends, make a WhatsApp group or whatever you wanna do. *All of these facts are researched fully through various websites* I know a lot of people who are well informed and have opinions on this subject, but a lot do not. This week I’m going to break it down for anyone who is confused. WHAT IS THE 8TH AMENDMENT? The Eighth Amendment equates the right to life of a pregnant woman with that of an embryo or foetus. In doing so it criminalises abortion in all cases except where to continue a pregnancy would result in death. This archaic and dangerous law: • infringes on the human rights of women in Ireland and goes against international human rights norms • denies access to basic health care, forcing over 154,000 to travel overseas to obtain an abortion since 1980 • criminalises those who self-administer abortion pills in Ireland • maintains a false and medically dangerous distinction between risk to health and risk to life • discriminates against those who cannot travel to obtain abortions • does not reflect present public opinion in Ireland

1. Ireland has the one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the European Union. Malta, where abortion is banned in all circumstances, is the only member state where abortion laws are more restrictive. 2. A woman may not procure an abortion in Ireland if she is pregnant due to rape. The latest national statistics from Rape Crisis Centres show that approx 197 women and girls who attended their centres in 2013 were pregnant as a result of rape. 25% of these survivors went on to terminate the pregnancy, meaning they either had to travel for an abortion or illegally take abortion pills in Ireland. 3. A woman may not procure an abortion if she is carrying a foetus that will not survive outside of the womb. Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has admitted that Ireland’s abortion law forces women to carry to term pregnancies that have “no chance of survival for long outside the womb, if at all.” In 2014, 140 Irish women traveled to the UK to have abortions due to congenital conditions, many of which would have been fatal. 4. In 2014, on average, 10 women traveled from Ireland to Britain every day for an abortion. Due to the secrecy and stigma around abortion in Ireland, there are no numbers available to account for the women who travel to other European countries or who procure abortions within Ireland using pills. We do know that in 2014, 1017 abortion pills were seized by Irish Customs (more than double the amount seized in 2013). Any woman or girl who procures an abortion, or anyone who assists a women to procure an abortion in Ireland, outside the confines of the current legislation, can be criminalised and imprisoned for up to 14 years.

1. The 8th Amendment equates the life of a woman to that of an embryo. 2. The vast majority of women who want and need abortions are unable to access them in Ireland under interpretations of this law. 3. Women have already died in Ireland having been denied life-saving abortion procedures. 4. At least 150,000 women have travelled to other countries to procure abortions since 1980. 5. People who procure abortion within the country risk a 14 year jail term. Doctors can be jailed too. 6. The life and health of a pregnant woman has a much greater value than our constitution places on it. I strongly believe that EVERY woman should have complete control over her own body. It’s 2018, we need to trust women to make the right decision for them. I believe in the right to safe medical care. I believe in women having the right to choose what they do with their own bodies. Repealing the 8th does not mean that YOU have to get an abortion, it means every woman has the right to choose what she does with her own body. That she can have access to the right help, information and medical attention without being criminalised or having to travel. TRUST WOMEN. ALLOW THEM TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICE.

Here is a simple break down of why we need to repeal the 8th amendment of the constitution. It is by no means all of the reasons.

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS!

I hope you’re all having an amazing week! I’ve been loving a good cardio sweat sesh so this week I’m going to talk about the importance of cardio. Now when I say cardio is important I don’t mean jogging excessively on the treadmill for hours, hating every second, punishing yourself for that ‘bad food’ you ate. NO. I’m talking about doing different exercises that make you feel good and improve your cardiovascular health while doing so. It might be swimming, boxing, a gym class, walking the dog, cycling anything that gets you up and moving and feeling good! I used to hate ‘cardio’ because what cardio meant to be was doing the same exercise EVERY time. Aka jogging for 30 mins. When I started switching up the cardio workouts I was doing, introducing swimming, sprints, interval training, boxing, gym classes etc… I really started

enjoying it! I love getting a good sweat on and getting my heart rate up! I also fell in love with the Cardio classes in Titan Fitness, I loved the feeling I got after them. Doing cardio is important to maintaining a healthy heart. Your heart is the centre of your cardiovascular system, and is vitally responsible for giving your body life! Of course, doing excessive intense cardio is not good either. It will put your body in a catabolic state and burn your hard earned muscle. Then if you lose too much muscle it will slow down your metabolism in turn making it harder to burn fat. So if you think introducing a training regime where all you do is intense cardio sessions 5 times a week with no weight training, you’re not going to benefit!

either extreme(all weight training or all cardio) just try and introduce something new to switch it up a little. Of course you can do things like HIIT training with some weights and get the best of both worlds. All I’m saying is, cardio is not the devil when done correctly. And it will actually help your performance in the weight room.

A frog goes into a bank and speaks to the teller about getting a loan. The teller, Mrs. Whack, brings him over to a desk where they can discuss. “So, what will this loan be for?” “It’s to buy my father a new stereo. He’s super into rock & roll.” “Not to be intrusive, but you don’t look very young. How old is your father?” “He’s getting pretty old. His name is Mick Jagger.” “Interesting. I see you have good credit score, so a loan shouldn’t be a big problem. We do require some form of collateral in order to give loans though.” “That’s no problem.” The frogs pulls out a pink porceline elephant and hands it to the teller. She isn’t sure if the item is sufficient enough for the loan and goes to ask her manager about it. “Sir, there is a frog out there trying to get a loan. He says his father is Mick Jagger and he’s trying to buy a stereo for him. This is the only collateral he offered.” “Well Patty, let’s see it.” He looks over the piece and eventually gives his thoughts. “It’s a nick nack Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man is a Rolling Stone.

TORQUING CARS! FORD WANTS TO ADDRESS MALE-FEMALE IMBALANCE WITH UP TO 50 JOBS

WOMEN are being invited to apply for up to 50 “rewarding” jobs in the motor industry in an attempt to address the male-female imbalance. A number of Ford dealers are looking to recruit as many as 50 new technicians and apprentices to help meet a high level of demand for servicing and maintenance of their vehicles Apprentice candidates will qualify for the brand’s master technician training programme at its academy in Naas, Co Kildare. As well as taking on new, unqualified apprentices, some dealers are hoping to recruit trained technicians with “cuttingedge software, electronic and electrical skills”. David Pimlott, director of customer service at Ford Ireland, says: “This is a fantastic opportunity to join Ireland’s biggest network of car dealerships. This muscular 286bhp TCR Concept version of the seventh-generation Golf GTi, revealed at the annual Wörthersee fan meet in Austria recently, will be made later this year.TCR stands for Touring Car Racing, and the performance hatchback highlights Volkswagen’s participation in the championship.The concept front-wheel drive GTi TCR may not be produced for too long given that we can’t be too far off an eighth-generation Golf, which, according to reports, is due next year. And that makes the TCR all the more special, I suppose.It is expected to power on with the same turbocharged 2-litre 4cyl petrol engine used by the earlier Golf GTi Clubsport. You can choose between four driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual (specific tuning of steering, engine mapping and gearbox software).There is a 20mm reduction in ride height, standard 19in wheels and upgraded larger disc brakes.Of course, there are styling changes to make it look a bit different from the standard GTi (front bumper, sharper front splitter, wider sills under the doors and a full-width rear diffuser).Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. UK’S RAREST CARS: 1974 DATSUN VIOLET 140J, ONE OF ONLY SIX LEFT

Eleven years ago, Mark Ashbridge of Hebdon acquired a vehicle that he thought was “the coolest thing I’d ever seen” – his words to describe a 1974 Datsun Violet 140J. At that time, he had previously owned “a few old British cars and I started to have a hankering for something more obscure; Japanese cars fitted the bill”. The Violet was produced between 1973 and 1977 and bridged the gap between the 120Y Sunny and the 610-series Bluebird and the Ashbridge example was sourced via a tip-off from the Datsun expert Ed Rattley. “It was from a deceased’s estate and had been in the old lady’s garage for 10 years”, said Ashbridge. “A banger racer who was gathering up Datsuns beat me to it, but to his credit he made it roadworthy and I managed to buy it from him. It could do with stripping and restoring properly but it is very good and a low-mileage example. And it has been back on the road 10 years, so that’s a bonus.” Most of the Violets imported to the UK were the four-door saloon powered by a 1,428cc OHC engine, although hip young executive types who could not quite run to a Ford Capri 3000 GXL were offered the twin-carb 160J SSS Coupé, with independent rear suspension. On the road the 140J is described by its proud owner as “very much like a 1950s car with, cart springs and a steering box, form over function. But it does handle neutrally and will bowl along at 70 mph all day.As for the Violet “there are only six left in the UK, plus six of the post-1976 facelifted versions with the different rear end. When I bought the Datsun, I had no idea how rare they were”.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR DELAY NOT ACCEPTABLE BUT OUTCOME WAS THE RIGHT ONE: Kerry and Wexford drew 1-1 in the SSE Airtricity League at Mounthawk Park at the weekend. This was probably a fair result with Kerry equalising late after Evan Connolly put the visitors ahead with a cracking 25 yards shot. The Kerry goal came from a training ground routine with a Cian Brosnan corner low to the near post and it was flicked home by Ronan Teehan. But while this is important in the overall scheme of things it comes a distant second to the health and welfare of the players. During the game the Wexford goalkeeper jumped for a ball with some of the Kerry attackers and his own defenders. He fell awkwardly as sometimes happens and when his team manager and our person on duty went to him he was complaining about his neck. Both adults made the correct decision not to move Arron Phelan and the Wexford manager laid down at his head to ensure there would be no movement. A thermal blanket was also put on him and an ambulance was called. Everyone waited and waited and waited. A call was put in again 45 minutes after the first one as there was still no sign of the ambulance. Eventually one arrived over 90 minutes since it was first called. The personnel on the ambulance were as professional as ever and the player was taken away. Thankfully after observation Aaron was ok so well done to all involved – except whoever felt that it was right to have a player wait 90 minute lying on the ground for an ambulance. From the information we received the ambulance had to come from Dingle. Now I am not an investigative journalist and didn’t make calls looking for an explanation – there are many more qualified that can take this up with the HSE – and possibly our local politicians might like to look into it. But from a sporting point of view this is not acceptable. Does the call centre which I believe is in Cork – and that’s another issue regarding addresses and local knowledge – prioritise the calls due to their severity? Maybe all the local ambulances were dealing with more serious cases? But if so and I am sure those that were being attended to will say it was what would have happened if the

clash on the field had been more serious? Would that mean that an ambulance would have been re-routed to Mounthawk Park and someone else would be waiting for 90 minutes. Now I fully understand that you cannot have a fleet of ambulances waiting at University Hospital Tralee just waiting for calls but would it be possible to have an advanced paramedic or two in specially adapted SUV’s that could attend some of the call-outs. Anyway as I said the most important thing is that Aaron is alright. Those who were involved in helping him until the ambulance arrived did an excellent job. But I do think the matter deserved to be highlighted and if anyone wants to reply or has further information then we will be delighted to give you that opportunity to do so in next week’s edition. TRALEE MANOR WEST ALL SET FOR IRELAND PREMIER CYCLE RACE: Cycling in Kerry has always been a very popular sport and the county has produced many top class riders. We have had 5 winners of the Ras Tailteann going back as far as Gene Mangan in 1955. Many more riders have taken part in the Ras – recently known as the An Post Ras but now back to its original name including the likes of Sean Lacey. This year Kerry will have two teams in the multi-national field that will race over 8 stages starting in Drogheda this Sunday May 20th. Killarney is made up of Marcus Treacy, John Brosnan, Conor Kissane, Patrick Clifford and Richard Maes. TRALEE MANOR WEST TEAM: The Tralee Manor West Club is one of the biggest in the county and Ras team manager Daithi Creedon has put together a very impressive squad for the event. Speaking to this column he said he was delighted with the five riders he had. “From our own club we are lucky to riders of the calibre of Cathal Moynihan who has ridden in every Ras since 2013 and Cormac Daly who will be doing his second Ras. As we don’t do the Ras every year due to the commitment and budget it takes we said when we decided to do it we would look to put together as strong a team as possible. Friday 18th May 2018

“We are delighted to secure the services of Eugene Moriarty. He will be taking part in an amazing 21st Ras and has been one of the top riders in the country for the last two decades. It is also great for him to be in the race as we have a stage finish and start from his home town of Listowel where his brother and father Tadgh will be stage end directors. “Paul Kennedy from the Newcastlewest club has been targeting this race since last year. He had a very strong Ras Mumhan in 2017 winning the stage into Athea and wearing yellow. Since then he has put a training plan in place to be in perfect shape for the Ras and we are hoping for a good race from him. “The final rider is certainly one that has being getting a lot of attention. Lee Masters is from Australia where he does all the races on their circuit. He then comes to Europe for three months to ride in races and I was tipped off that he was looking for a team. We spoke and when he saw our roster he was more than happy to join. “We have the preparation work done and will be pushing hard for County honours. If we do get a rider into that jersey we believe we have the team to defend it.” I asked Daithi about the logistics of putting a team into the Ras Tailteann and he said the club was lucky to have the backing of the Boyle family through the Manor West and Ashe Hotels. The team has secured vehicles from Adam of Tralee. A team in the Ras is more than just about the riders and the team will have Shane Courtney as its mechanic, Stevie Griffin as its driver and Lisa Staplebroek as masseuse. Dan Moynihan and Tony Daly will Kerry cycling fans will be able to see the Ras for themselves when Stage 3 ends in Listowel on Tuesday May 22nd. The last time the Ras came to Listowel Sam Bennett was the winner and he went on to win a stage in the Giro d’Italia this week. The Ras will leave Listowel the following day and head to Killarney and over Molls Gap and onto Glengarriff. KERRY ATHLETES WIN KILLARNEY MARATHON: Derek Griffin clocked a time of 2 hours and 45 seconds to win the Killarney marathon having won in Limerick Marathon the week before. Over 300 athletes took part in the race with Rachel Stokes the first lady home. Damien Foley and Suzanne Foley were the home over the half marathon distance. LEE STRAND 550 THE HIGHLIGHT AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the first round heats of the Kerry Group A3 confined County Championships over 525 yards. On Saturday night there is one of the biggest nights of the year with the final of the Lee Strand 550 yards which will be one of the best finals in years. Experts expect that a number of these finalists will contest this year’s Boylesports Derby. The final will be part of an 11 all sponsored programme thanks to Lee Strand Creamery in Tralee. The track is also taking entries for racing on 061 448057. Amongst the races that entries are being excepted for are the Track Supporters Club N1 525 yards to start on Saturday May 26th and the Race of Champions Open 550 yards with a winner’s prize of e15,000 to start on Friday June 1st. A WEEKEND OF DRAWS: Probably the only person who is happy after the weekend’s soccer finals is KDL League Secretary as all his Cup finals ended in draws. Kerry soccer fans were out in great numbers at the games and all 6 sets of supporters will have to don their colours for the replays which have not been set at the time we are going to print but will probably be the weekend after next. In the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youths Cup final St Brendan’s Park drew 1-1 with Killarney Celtic. The Premier B final between Tralee Celtic and Mitchels Avenue ended on the same score-line while in the Denny Division 2A Final Classic and Killorglin B also ended 1-1. LONG BUT GOOD DAY IN THE MIDDLE: It was a proud day for Kerry soccer when Tralee referee Derek O’Shea led the teams out last Sunday in the Aviva Stadium for the New Balance FAI Junior Cup final. Wexford’s North End United defeated Limerick’s Pike Rovers on penalties after extra time to win the Cup for the first time ever. Derek got all the big calls right and was hardly mentioned in commentary during the game – the real sign that a referee and his officials are doing a great job. KERRY HURLERS BOUNCE BACK: The Kerry hurlers have gotten their Joe McDonagh Cup campaign back on track after they defeated Laois 3-20 to 0-19. Having gone down to

Kerry hit the net through Jack Goulding, Brendan O’Leary and Shane Nolan. Laois were one of the pretournament favourites but have now lost both their opening games. Kerry are now back on track and will be looking to continue their winning ways next Sunday at home to Westmeath who had a big win over Meath last weekend. PARNELL’S NEWS: Well Done Mount Brandon Climbers: The club wants to thanks all those involved in the climb of Brandon last Sunday. It was great to see all the Tralee Parnells Camogie Feile players make it to the summit. U12’s: The u12 Division 1 team had their second last outing of the 1st phase of the Kerry Hurling League when they took on Lixnaw. The Tralee side played against the wind in the first half and were 6 points down at half time. They fought back in the second period to take a lead they didn’t relinquish and won 5-07 to 3-08 in the end. The U14’s had a huge win over an under strength South Kerry team in the County league Saturday evening. A week after losing to the same opposition in the Féile final it was great to see the lads bounce back with a comprehensive win. Well done lads and keep it going for the rest of the year. Mounthawk U15s: Well done to the u15’s hurlers who won the Schools first ever Munster hurling title this week. Parnells were well represented with Eddie Sheehy, Evan Foley, Niall Cassidy, Cillian Litchfield with former player Joey Nagle also on the squad. Kerry U17 hurlers: The Kerry U17 hurlers had a good away to West Cork in the Celtic Challenge. Parnells were represented by Darragh Reen, Ruarí O Sullivan and Devon Burns who got the Man of the Match Award – his second in two games. The game ended 3-14 to 1-13. Cumann na mBunscoil: The first Cumann na mBunscoil Blitz took place this week with Moyderwell, Tralee CBS, Holy Family, Blennerville and Caherleheen who had two team taking part. This is a major step in the clubs efforts to promote Hurling and Camogie in the area and is only possible through the outstanding work by South Kerry GDA David O Dea. The club was well represented at the Hurling Workshop for Coaches from u6’s to Minors. All who attended enjoyed some great coaching tips for the expert panel. AUSTIN STACKS NOTES: The u6’s, under 8’s and u10’s will be in Caherslee this Sunday at 11am for football fun. The u11’s had an early start as they headed for Dublin for the Kilmacud Crokes multi-county blitz. It turned into a a great trip for the boys who went

through the day unbeaten. They defeated Celbridge, Newtown Blues and Cuala. The u12’s enjoyed County League victories against Laune Rangers in the A’s and B’s and St Pat’s for the C’s. The A’s and B’s are now awaiting a County League final against Dr Crokes. The u14’s Tralee Town Board Suit Select League Division 1 final will take place against Kerin’s O’Rahillys in Caherslee at 6pm this Saturday. In the County League the A’s went down in the semi-final to Glenflesk. The B’s take on Ballymac in their County League Division 9 final this week. The 16’s had a good win over Laune Rangers while the Minors are into their Division 1 League Final. JUNIOR CAMOGIE FINAL: The Munster Junior Final between Kerry and Cork will take place in Kilmallock this Sunday May 20th BALLYMAC NEWS: Ballymac took on Listowel Emmets in Round 4 of the Senior Football County League with the North Kerry side leading 1-08 to 1-07 at the break. Second half goals be Aiden Breen and Vinnie Horan set Ballymac on the way for an impressive 3-14 to 1-11 win. The club was very happy with the performance of new young goalkeeper Padraig Laide. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 7,13, 23 and 27 and the next jackpot will be e4,700 with the draw in O’Riadas. In the under 12’s Team 2 plays Cromane in Phase 1 of County League this week. Team 1 went down to Rathmore and Laune Rangers while Team 2 defeated the same opposition. Both teams are looking forward to Phase 2. The u14’s took on Kenmare in Round 5 of their County League and were well ahead at half time before taking a big win 5-18 to 3-08 to qualify for a semi-final against Fossa. The u14B’s finished Group 9 with a win against Kerins O’Rahillys to take 4th and set up a semi-final away to Laune Rangers B. The u16’s lost to Knock/Brosna/ Duagh in their County League final 4-11 to 2-12 after a highly competitive game. The club would like to thank all those who stewarded at The Kingdom County Fair last Sunday. KERIN’S O’RAHILLYS NOTES: The Seniors just lost out to Legion in Killarney by the minimum but were always chasing the game after conceding 1-08 in the first half to trail by 6 points at the break. A good fight back saw the gap close all during the second half but could not get that final point to take something from the game. There next game is at home to John Mitchels on the weekend of May 26th. In the County League Division 5 the B’s picked up their first their first points of the campaign drawing with Asdee 0-14 to 2-08. Asdee led 1-06 to 0-07 points at the break. Round 5 will take place on weekend of 27th May when

The fees have not changed since last year and are still priced at e60 for adults and e30 for students. There was another great turnout for the Academy last Sunday with the new kits causing great excitement. The Players of the Week were U6 Boys Nathan Walsh with the Girls accolade going to Stevie Rose O’Sullivan. The u8’s named were Conor Ryan and Joshua O’Connor with Nick Lacey being named at u10’s. The Academy will travel to Ballymac next Sunday the 20th May to play in their first games. The u14’s finished their County League in style to easily defeat Ardfert to top the Group and set up a semi-final against the same opposition. In the u16’s Central League the boys went down to Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane. There is no activity for the U-16s until June when county league will begin, shortly after the junior certificate. Ladies: The u12 Girls defeated Dr Crokes while the u14’s saw off Na Gaeil and the u16’s game against Duagh was called off. Feile Skills: Katie Nix will represent the club in the Feile Skills Competition this Friday May 18th. Members are asked to remember that Registration is now due at e45 for juvenile players and e60 for 18 years and over. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2, 20, 24 and 29 and the next jackpot will be e4,000. ST PATS NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,15,17 and 21 and the next jackpot in Skelpers Quanes will be e7,500. The Dingle Way Challenge is only 3 weeks away with all preparations going well. Details are available from the club. There was great numbers for the Academy training. The u10’s had a Blitz this week and will train again on Sunday from 10.30am. The u12 Boys and Girls will have a game with the details to be announced soon. The u14 Girls went down in their County League game against Annascaul and train again this Sunday from 11am. The u14 boys were defeated away to Skellig Rangers /Valentia. U17: For the second year, the U17 Club 9 a side Competition will begin on Wednesday 23rd May at 7pm. The Competition will take place over 3 Rounds: Wednesday May 23rd, Monday May 28th and Saturday June 2nd. St Pats are in with St Michaels Foilmore and John Mitchels in Group 8 will all games being played in Cromane. The club will hold its Juvenile Registration this Sunday May 20th from 10am to 12 noon. Senior Registration is also due. The Seniors defeated Keel in Round 4 of the Division 3 County League. The sides were level at half time with St Pats winning out in the end by 4 points. The Men’s Singles went to Kevin Kerins from Paul Kelliher and Martin Downey. This weekend, May 18th to 20th, the big competition is the 3rd annual Dick Fitzgerald Memorial Golf Tournament with the Cup and prizes to be played for at the Castleisland Members’ Golf Club from Friday, May 18th to Sunday, May 20th inclusive. TRALEE GOLF CLUB: In the Ladies section the MC 5 sponsored by Dan Fitzgerald the winner was Margaret Murphy with Laura Rafferty second and Sandra O’Sullivan in third. The Best Gross went to Mags Hayes. The 2018 Kerry Motor Works Club Singles Match Play is one of the biggest competitions of the year at the club. Masterclassic points are awarded to the last 8 in the Club Singles (subject to number of entries). Entry is now open on BRS with the draw being made on May 29th. In the Men’s 4 person Golf Classic the winners were Sean McCarthy, Sean Reidy, Colm Sheehy and Michael McDonnell with 95 points. Second were Kay MacNamara, Grainne Sheehy, Ger MacNamara and Mikey Sheehy. In third place was the team of Edward Daniel, Martin O’Driscoll, Pat Morrissey and Derek Kelly. The Best Ladies team was made up of Laura Rafferty, Mary O’Donnell, Rosemary Kavanagh and Jackie Kavanagh who finished with 81 points. The drinks in the club house were on Kieran Ruttledge who hit an ace at the 3rd hole!!
