LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Tralee Advertiser – A Grandchild’s story.
Tony and Mary have been looking after his granddaughter Ciara after their mother Angela died for about two years. She is 10 years of age and has lived with them since she was born as her mother was a single mother whom they supported after she had Ciara and it worked well for all of them. They now feel that they need to get some legal status in relation to Ciara for liaising with Ciara’s school, for signing forms for her e.g. passport forms and for medical reasons also. They are wondering what they can do. The new Children and Family Relationships Act 2015 provides that where people have been looking after a child for at least a year and where there is no other guardian that they can make application to the District Court to become legal guardians of Ciara. The application would be on notice to the Child and Family Agency and her father/parent even if he is not a guardian and the court would decide the application based on the best interests of the child. This act sets out criteria the Judge would take into account in deciding what is in the best interests of the child. This long list includes having meaningful relationships with relatives, the views of the child, physical, psychological and emotional needs of the child, the history of the child’s upbringing and care, the child’s religious, spiritual, cultural and linguistic upbringing and needs; the child’s social, intellectual and educational upbringing and needs; the child’s age and any special characteristics and the protection of the child’s safety and psychological well-being; where applicable, proposals made for the child’s custody, care, development and upbringing and to maintain and foster relationships between the child and his or her other relatives; the capacity of each person in respect of whom an application is made under this Act to care for and meet the needs of the child. There are other criteria as well but these would be the relevant elements of the list for this application. Hopefully all going well Tony and Mary would succeed in getting becoming joint Guardians of Ciara. This would give them rights and responsibilities to make the relevant major decisions for Ciara in relation to education, dental and medical care, where and with whom she would live as well as her religious, spiritual, cultural and linguistic upbringing. They would also be responsible to provide for her safety and welfare.

GREGORYS GARDEN RESTAURANT RE-OPENS IN CASTLEGREGORY THIS WEEKEND (WHILE EMBER SIZZLES IN DUBLIN!) You would think opening a high end restaurant in the heart of Dublin suburbia late last year , a restaurant that has received rave reviews from the royalty of Irish Food critics would be enough of a distraction to stop Kerryman and chef Greg O Mahony from re-opening his hidden gem ‘Gregorys Garden “ again in Castlegregory . But Greg is having none of it .. “We open our doors again in Castlegregory this weekend “ and are really looking forward to the season . “My experience in Castlegregory over the past 10 seasons is what allowed me to take the plunge in Dublin . Without my great summers in the Milesian Restaurant and more recently Gregorys Garden , both in Castle , I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go with Ember . “ But I cant forget my roots and so much of what I’ve learned in Kerry is embedded in Embers fare “ But its not just Kerry we’re talking about here , Greg has been around 2

the block , so to speak . As renowned Critic Tom Doorley recently put it in his excellent review of Ember ...”Theres Chapter One , L’Ecrivan and Pichet wrapped up in this restaurant and it shows !” Indeed Catherine Cleary of the Irish Times said “”O’Mahoney is a fresh talent, doing things differently in small ways that make Ember stand out from the crowd.” and Lucinda O Sullivan “O’Mahoney fine tuned his culinary skills in some of the best kitchens in Ireland including Chapter One, L’Ecrivain and Pichet...This Ember sure sizzles “ “Yes I have brought some of Gregorys Garden fare into Ember and its worked really well ...to me fresh different ingredients are key , and Castlegregory has an abundance of them . Im really excited about introducing some of my Ember menu to my regular customers in Castlegregory . My organic gardens in Castlegregory are full and abundant with fresh produce , thanks to Friday 26th May 2017

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TWO KERRY SCHOOLS TRIUMPH AT THE BORD GÁIS ENERGY STUDENT THEATRE AWARDS Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School & Loughfounder National School from Kerry have both been announced as winners at the 2017 Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards. The winners were revealed at a special awards ceremony at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on Wednesday, May 17 hosted by RTÉ 2FM presenter Eoghan McDermott. The top prize in the Best Set category was bestowed upon Loughfouder National School in Tralee for their remarkable set design in the production ‘The Yank Returns’. The judges were dazzled by the set and noted that it brought them back to 1950s Ireland. Loughfouder National School also received a bursary from Bord Gáis Energy. The top prize in the Best Dramatic Review category was bestowed upon Cian Mc Grath from Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in Tralee
for his impressive review of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf: A Triumph in Theatre’. The judges were impressed with Cian for his stunningly written review, describing it as mature and engaging with beautiful use of language. Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School also received a bursary from Bord Gáis Energy. Open to primary school pupils from 3rd – 6th class and all secondary school students, the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards featured 12 categories including performance and production categories such as; Best Overall School Musical, Best Costumes, and Best Performance in a Leading Role, to written categories such as; Best Dramatic Review and Best Short Scene Script. A new category, Best Original Production, was also added to the 2017 awards in appreciation of the exceptional quality of original
productions entered in 2016. Commenting on the Awards, Mr. Dave Kirwan, Managing Director of Bord Gáis Energy said: “We set up these Awards four years ago to recognise and reward the incredible effort that goes into schools’ drama all around Ireland at both primary and secondary level. The theme of this year’s awards was all about participation, and I think today’s ceremony was a great example
of this. It was fantastic to see so many schools from all over the country coming together to take part.” “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of this year’s winners and everyone who entered this year’s awards. The talent, creativity and enthusiasm shown by students, teachers and parents has been exceptional!”

Chris: Why did you choose to deliver to people at work? Kate: Being a busy working mum myself I know how difficult it is for people to eat healthily especially at work.Even aside from having children ,people nowadays lead hectic lives and its not always easy to organise lunch everyday.A lot of our customers like to fit in a run during lunch or may often have to work through lunch so getting some fresh healthy food delivered to them makes life a little easier. Chris: How is your business different from other food companies out there at the moment? Kate: We believe in fresh not frozen and make all our dishes fresh daily from our premises in Firies. We use local produce where possible and all our dishes are aimed at being as nutritious as possible. We use superfoods including fresh veg, grains, healthy proteins & slow release carbs to keep people fuelled for longer. We also change our menu weekly so people don't get bored! Chris: Is there anything new or exciting coming for Krave in 2017? Kate: Yes there are lots of plans for Krave in the coming months. We are currently in the process of developing meal prep plans. We are working closely with a nutritionist to develop healthy eating plans & performance plans depending on what the customer wants to achieve. These will include pre prepped nutritious breakfast smoothies, lunch, dinner & 2 snacks. We also hope to add to our retail options also in the coming months. Chris :How can people contact you? Kate: You can go to our website kravelunch.com and subscribe to receive our weekly menu. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SOMETHING MAGICAL IS ON THE WAY TO CAMP Last Sunday , under a blaze of sunshine, Coach Field Camp opened their doors to the locals of the area. Speculation was rife in the many local establishments of Camp as to what was going on in the old Horse Drawn Caravan site behind Ashe’s Pub in the village. What was revealed on Sunday were beautifully handcrafted vardo camping pods and a large teepee. Coach Field Camp will boost the number of holiday makers to the local area, by giving those who like the adventure of a camping holiday but still want comfort, another option. The camp site is the brain child of Tralee native and resident of Camp, Tommy Dowling. Speaking to Tommy, he said “The pods are handcrafted in the age old tradition of the vardo horse
drawn carriage which visited this same site many years ago. The difference now is we offer all the home comforts we have grown to expect. Each pod has a full supply of power, free WiFi and tea/ coffee making facilities. We are now open for bookings and are delighted to report that we already have a number of booking for the coming weeks which is a great boost to businesses in the area. “ Coach Field Camp have created a unique holiday getaway allowing visitors to experience ‘West Kerry’ hospitality. Guests will enjoy the beautiful backdrop of the Dingle Way and Wild Atlantic Way and more activities than you could possibly wish for. If you would like to sleep under Roisin Donnelly Currow, Alannah Tommy Dowling owner with O’ Shea Camp and Muireann his wife Marcella Herlihy the stars see their website Donnelly Currow www.CoachFieldCamp.com

KATIE FROM PREMIER TRAVEL TALKS ABOUT THE REAL BENEFITS OF TRAVELLING!
If there was one piece of advice I have for people today to experience more joy in life, it is to travel more. I don’t mean taking vacations or going on pre-planning trips, I mean making the journey out to somewhere you’ve never gone, to let life show you what opportunities are waiting for you that you couldn’t have even imaged before. Even if you live in a vibrant city and have an exciting job and active social life, nothing can replace the unique experiences traveling offers. Visiting a foreign country opens your eyes to how the rest of the world lives. Remember, you only live once, so passing up a chance to travel is tantamount to passing up a life-altering experience. Foremost one of the reasons to travel is that you discover a lot about yourself. Now I'm not talking about taking a family trip to Disney World. When I speak of a special vacation, I envision someone backpacking across Europe or driving along the coast of Australia — that is, a trip with cultural significance. Not only does traveling provide a sense of adventure, but it also opens doors to cultures. Better yet, you will become appreciative of other cultures; instead of instinctively criticising that which is "different," you will be motivated to accept new cuisine or alternative forms of entertainment. Even for those of you who are not as culturally minded, traveling remains an appealing form of escape. In every corner of the world, there is excitement waiting for you — it is simply a matter of sticking your head out and going for it. If education of the alternative kind is not on your "to-do" list, just think about the benefits of learning another language. Plan a trip and learn a language abroad; you'll get a solid education and leave with great memories. Traveling can also increase your contacts if you keep your eyes open. Who knows what can happen over sushi in Tokyo; perhaps a new import/export opportunity for your business? Remember to plan way ahead by researching hotels, and must-see sites months before departure. Keep in mind, though, that it is important to leave room for some spontaneous decisions when you're actually there. The most important thing, however, is to keep an open mind. Traveling is a luxury, so make the most of it.

KERRY REGION TOURISM INSIGHT CERTIFICATION
On Thursday 11th May I.T. Tralee hosted over 100 transition year students and their teachers from all over Kerry region. Each of the students received inaugural certificates acknowledging their completion of the ‘Tourism Insight’ online programme.
The Office of the Press Ombudsman deals with complaints against publications that are members of the Press Council of Ireland. This is done free of charge without having to go to court. You can make a complaint about any article that personally affects you. You can also complain about the behaviour of a journalist. The article or the behaviour must be in breach of the professional standards and behaviours set out in the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Periodicals. You must first make your complaint to the editor of the newspaper or magazine which published the article, explaining why you think the Code has been breached. If you don’t get a response or you are not happy with the response, you can complain to the Office of the Press Ombudsman within three months of the publication of the article or the behaviour of the journalist. The complaint must be made in writing by email or post and must: • Show how you are personally affected • Indicate which parts of the code of practice have been breached and why • Include a dated copy of the article • Include copies of correspondence between you and the editor The Office will first seek to have your complaint resolved through conciliation and/or mediation. This usually takes four to six weeks. If the matter is referred to the Press Ombudsman for a decision, it may take a further two weeks. If the decision is in your favour, the newspaper or magazine must publish the decision unless it is appealed. If you are not happy with the decision, you can appeal to the Press Council of Ireland within two weeks. You can get detailed information on how to make a complaint to the Press Ombudsman at citizensinformation.ie or from the Office of the Press Ombudsman.

SUFFER FROM BREATHING PROBLEMS AND AILMENTS? A VISIT TO THE SALT THERAPY ROOMS IN TRALEE MIGHT JUST DO THE TRICK! Chris Shortt from The Tralee Advertiser caught up with breathing expert ,Stas , who operates Halotherapy , Salt Rooms in Tralee at the recent Bank Of Ireland Tralee Enterprise Town Expo . Stas was delighted to tell me the good news stories that keep coming back to him from the different people (now proud to call his friends !) who have experienced his Salt Therapy at his premises in Market Lane , Tralee. The stories of recovery , of relief and of improvement in so many peoples lives were so good ...and dramatic in some cases , that I had to share them in The Tralee Advertiser “ says Chris “These are people who suffer from all types of breathing Issues that complicate their lives ...issues such as Asthma , Hay Fever , Chronic coughing ,wheezing , bronchitis, Nasal congestion, Chronic Sinus ...the list goes on“ This is a good news story , it's my job to pass it on, says Chris... keep reading
CHRONIC SINUS
Both myself and 2 children suffer from chronic sinus and I was sick of the constant medicine! My 4 year old improved almost from the very first day and a couple of sessions later my 2 year old had also shown major improvement. Both are sleeping much better!
Emma INHALERS AND VENTOLIN
NASAL CONGESTION
“My son is 5 years old. He has used inhalers every winter since he was a year old. Our neighbour suggested Salt therapy. I booked in & we did five sessions in a two week period and his is chest is clearer, although he still needs his inhalers, I have been able to reduce the amount of Ventolin .. It was very child friendly. I intend doing salt therapy again , I would recommend you do the sessions close together to get maximum benefit.”
As a concerned parent of an 8 months old boy suffering with nasal congestion and a deep rattle in his chest, halotherapy salt rooms were recommended to me. It didn't take long ..within 2 weeks my baby had a clear chest, was breathing normally and was totally mucus free. I would pay particular mention to Stass the owner.I found him to very helpful, friendly and professional.
Fiona ASTHMA, BRONCHITIS & SINUS
Nicola S
(I SMOKED TOO MUCH !)
I am a O.A.P. and for a long time I have suffered from asthma and bronchitis: the result of smoking too much. I have inhalers and a nebuliser, which I used a lot. Six weeks ago I was going through a very bad asthma patch. My eldest son called in and talked to me about Halotherapy (The Salt Room). I was so bad, I could not drive to the Rooms, and walking was out of question. So my son drove me down to 6 Market Place, where the Salt Room is. As soon as I came, I had to sit down, as I could not get a breath. I was very much taken by the gentleman, who runs The Salt Room. There and then I decided to have one session. I was taken into the treatment room, where I was beginning to feel more relaxed: a lovely big room with armchairs and footstools, TV & Music . Upon finishing I booked another five sessions. Today I am 50 to 70 per cent better, and my sleep has improved. For the first time I could breathe through my nose, properly . I am not a GP or medical person but I would say anybody suffering from respiratory problems – please try the Salt Room. Like me, you are bound to get a relief.

Add the peppers and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 8 minutes. Season with Recipes by salt and pepper. Transfer the peppers to a large bowl or platter and garnish with basil. Serve the breadcrumb topping on the side, for sprinkling.

Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you are all having a fab week. How could you not with this amazing weather? Okay so… big news! As you may or may not know, I have been working in Dublin as a Makeup Artist for the past year. I have been working on the Lancôme counter as well as doing freelance. I’m a fully trained fully qualified Artist. I most recently did makeup for the IFTAs(Irish Film and Television Awards) and have gone to London on various accounts for training.
My makeup style is whatever you want it to be, a natural glam look to an intense smoky eye with cut crease. Whatever you want! It can be as natural or glam as you wish! I’m absolutely delighted that I’m in the position this year to take bookings, I’ve always got so many enquiries about appointments but because I’ve been based in Dublin, I haven’t been able to come to Tralee as often.
I have worked on all skin types and all ages, young to not so young. I was promoted to Senior Makeup Artist in Lancôme in February.
A makeup appointment with me will include a full cleanse of the skin before hand to ensure the skin is fully prepped and that your makeup looks as amazing as it should! I will also be doing lashes(glue ons) so you will able to bring your own if you wish or I will have a supply of my absolute favourite lashes at an extra cost(nothing crazy don’t worry).

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK! So this week I have a little announcement… I am going to Thailand for 3 weeks in July! Less than 8 weeks away!! I am so excited. So… it’s time for a little cut “8 weeks to Thailand”. My goal for Thailand is to be in really good shape and feeling good. I really want to lose a bit more body fat. I’ve been sitting around the same weight for a while now so I’m going to take things up a notch and see what happens. This week I went online to find my maintenance calories so that I could figure out what kind of deficit I am in and whether I need to decrease that slightly more. Maintenance calories are basically how many calories you can eat every day so that you remain the same weight. I won’t be sharing my calories or macros(protein carbs and fat) here because I don’t want anyone to follow what I’m doing and think that’s ok for them. Your calorie intake depends on your age, weight, height, lifestyle and so much more! If I find this method successful in the next few weeks, I will share exactly how you can calculate your own maintenance calories and or macros. So yeah, this week is basically a ‘test week’ for me so I can see what kind of calories and macros I should be having coming up to Thailand. I will tell you that it isn’t anything drastic, it’s over 2000 calories a day! Eating really low calorie will just damage your metabolism and isn’t sustainable so as soon as you return to eating higher calories, you will bloat and put on more fat than you started with. I’m re introducing more cardio into my gym sessions - I had been doing just
28
TRALEE ADVERTISER
weight training, slowly. So this week I’m doing two hiit sessions(high intensity aka sprints) and two liss sessions(low intensity aka uphill walking). My cardio will be going up and up as I get closer to Thailand but again I won’t do anything drastic. Why won’t I do anything extreme or drastic? Well, I’m going to Thailand for 3 weeks. If I was to do a drastic, low carb low calorie diet and hiit cardio six times a week for 8 weeks I would be a) exhausted b) damaging my metabolism c) lose a lot of muscle and d) the second I would get to Thailand and start eating normally and drinking more alcohol than I’m used to, my body would start holding onto water and I would bloat like crazy and by the time the first week is over I’d look and feel awful. Whereas if I do it right and slowly and don’t do anything crazy my body won’t get such a “shock” when I do go to Thailand. So yeah, Week 1 is dedicated to finding my initial calorie deficit. I’m not working with any personal trainers or anything at the moment as I have worked with them for over a year now and I feel I
Friday 26th May 2017
have a lot of knowledge myself as well as being in a mindset where I know what I want and what my goals are. I also am curious to see how my body reacts when I am responsible for my nutrition and workouts. Obviously I will use previous plans I have received as a guide and when I come back from Thailand I will probably enlist the help of another personal trainer, because they’re amazing for keeping me accountable and on track. But for now anyway, I’m going to try this out myself and see how far I get. I’ll be back next week to let you know how I get on!
Any gym supplements that I use I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla! I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE AN OLD LADY DECIDES TO CHECK ON HER 3 SON-IN-LAWS
GRAVEYARD SHORTCUT
A man’s car breaks down in the middle of the night. He knows the area well and realizes that the quickest way to the nearest service station is through an old graveyard. He’s walking along the headstones when in the distance he hears a faint tapping noise. As he gets deeper into the graveyard, the eerie tapping gets louder and louder. He very anxiously turns a corner and sees the source of the tapping is an old man with a hammer and chisel, hunched over a headstone. Relief washes over him and he says, “I was beginning to freak out because of that noise. I thought this place might have been haunted. What on earth are you doing here so late at night anyway?” The old man merely continues chiseling and says “They spelled my name wrong.”
She wanted to see who respects/cares for her the most. She goes to the lake near the eldest son-in-laws place and jumps. The son-in-law dives in and rescues her. Next day, he sees a toyota corolla parked in front of his house with a letter -- Thanks from your Mother-in-law. Then she goes to her second son-in-law places and jumps in a lake near his house. The second son-in-law also saves her. Next day he too gets a toyota corolla as a gift with a letter -- Thanks from your Motherin-law. Now the old lady goes to her third son-in-law’s place and jumps in the lake. He does not save her and she drowns. Next day he sees a Ferrari parked in front TWO MEN WALK of his house with a letter -- Thanks from INTO A BAR your Father-in-law. And after a few rounds the first man turned to the

I lifted my walking stick, pointed it at the rabbit and yelled ‘BANG!’ Suddenly the rabbit fell over, dead. What do you think about that, Sam? Sam thinks for a minute Sam: Well, I think somebody else must have shot that rabbit! Doctor: My point exactly!

TORQUING CARS! ELECTRIC CARS TO COST THE SAME AS PETROL CARS BY 2018
THE cost of owning an electric car will soon be on par with with petrol-powered vehicles by as early as next year. The analysis by UBS will come as a shock to many, as there is a generally perception that electric vehicles (EV) cost more than petrol-powered vehicles. Experts from the investment banks’s ‘evidence laboratory’ made the prediction, after analysing current EVs. They took apart a vehicle and examine the economic of the car to estimate how the cost of production could fall. Costs of producing EVs are much lower than previously believed, and it is believed that there is greater scope and potential to drive these costs down further. UBS now forecasts that “the total cost of consumer ownership can reach parity with combustion engines from 2018”. It is likely to happen in Europe first with the potential to take effect globally. “This will create an inflexion point for demand,” the analysts said. “We raise our 2025 forecast for EV sales by -50pc to 14.2m - 14pc of global car sales.”
GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED 2017: 70 YEARS OF FERRARI AND OTHER EXTREME MACHINES
The Goodwood Festival of Speed from June 29 to July 2 will feature a display of at least 70 significant Ferraris in celebration of 70 years since the Italian sports car maker was founded by il commendatore Enzo Ferrari in 1947. A jaw-dropping variety of Ferrari’s finest road and racing cars will be featured at the Festival, including competition sports cars and single-seaters, a panoply of the company’s greatest road cars and its very latest supercars. About 25 of Ferrari’s racing cars will be in action on the 1.16-mile hillclimb in the grounds of Goodwood House, covering each of the key post-war Grand Prix eras, powered by four-, six-, eight- and 12-cylinder engines. mThe selection of sports racing cars will chart Ferrari’s successes in all the great endurance races from the late Forties onwards. The Michelin Supercar Paddock will be home to the latest supercars to emerge from the famous maranello factory, while one of the classes in the popular Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance will be dedicated to Ferrari’s renowned 250-series – including legendary cars such as the 250 GTO, SWB and California Spider. Among a glittering array of the finest competition cars and motorcycles ever made, this year’s Festival of Speed will celebrate racing machines that were so fast, powerful, expensive or complicated that the rules had to be changed to rein them in. This year’s theme – ‘Peaks of Performance – Motorsport’s Game-Changers’ – will pay tribute to the high watermarks of motorsport. Some of the machines in action will be the jewellike 1.5-litre Delage 15 S8, the brutish Mercedes-Benz W125, the extraordinary 50cc Honda RC116, the savage Lancia Delta S4, the beautiful Ferrari 330 P4 and the unbeatable Penske PC23. Saturday and weekend tickets are now sold out, with Thursday, Friday and Sunday tickets selling fast. To buy tickets or enquire about the various hospitality packages, go to www.goodwood.com

RUBBER BARREN
The tread on my front tyres is 3mm. Although the legal limit is 1.8mm, when should I change them? MB HJ; Sooner rather than later. Some tyres will be fine as they approach the legal minimum, but others will be compromised. Note that it’s illegal to go below 3mm of tread in countries such as Switzerland.
GREEN & PLEASANT LAND
I am thinking of replacing my 15-year-old Mercedes estate with a more economical and eco-friendly used Toyota. Would a 2011 Auris hybrid with 59,000 miles be worth inspecting? Two owners in six years made me wonder about its reliability. MF HJ; My dad’s got one and it has been 100 per cent reliable. I find it very pleasant to drive. A peculiarity of the Auris hybrid is that, unlike other cars, it’s actually better on larger diameter wheels and lower-profile tyres.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER have received from local sponsors in the run up to the P2P. Entry is e8 on the gate for adults with children going in free.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR GO PRO OR NOT TO GO PRO: Firstly we live in a media age where columns are not just lines on a page but the basis for wide ranging discussions on Social Media. People can have their say very quickly and put their point of view into an argument on either side. Of course this also makes the columnist must more visible and he or she and their editors will be delighted to see a column being discussed and dissected many days after it was printed. And of course I am doing just that as I comment on Tomas O’Se article on Tadgh Kennelly and players going down under. Some are saying that this item has been blown out of all proportion and indeed some of the more cynical out there are saying the both are getting some much publicity out of this that they could be much closer in real life than the column suggests! But aside from that the question is how much of an issue is there in what Tomas O’Se has said. Of course for some people just one person leaving the GAA is one to many and it is especially hard to take for some when the person is of the class of Mark O’Connor. There is a lot of talk that David Clifford might be next but I think that he is not a likely to go as others even though he certainly has the ability to make it in Aussie Rules and indeed a few years ago if he chose soccer over GAA he would now certainly be on the books of a cross channel club. Credit to Tomas in that he says that, “nobody can blame a young player trying his luck in a professional sport. In some respects, maybe we’d all have loved to have been able to live the life of full-time athletes.” And that is certainly true. Many young players dream of playing professional sport and if they chose rugby or soccer they have that opportunity. In the GAA they don’t so Aussie Rules is the closest the get to making a career as a professional. The decision for a young player and their families to go professional is not an easy one. From a soccer point of view I know how tough this decision can be. Players who
38
TRALEE ADVERTISER
are spotted to have the talent level needed to make it abroad are often the focus of more than one club. A number of players from the Tralee area are currently on the radar of cross channel clubs and have been over on a number of occasions. Recently we have seen the progress made by the likes of Rian O’Sullivan and Shane Loughlin who are doing very well while players like Sean Kennedy, who is starring with the Irish U16’s this week hitting 4 goals in two games including the winner against Kosovo, have been to the UK on trials. From a rugby point of view JJ Hanrahan is the most high profile player from the county in recent years to make the transition to the professional game while there are a number of others also singed with clubs. In rugby at least players have the opportunity to sign with Irish provinces at the early stages before the do move abroad. And it is interesting that there was no ‘outcry’ when these players chose the professional pathway – maybe they would not have been the footballer that Mark O’Connor was tipped to be but any of the three mentioned would have had a good crack at playing for Kerry if they had decided to stay with the GAA. On the Women’s side Savannah McCarthy is enjoying life as a professional footballer in Glasgow. There is no doubt she would have been a huge edition to the Kerry Ladies if she was based in Kerry. The other thing that is vital when a young player is deciding if professional sport is for him /her is for them to have someone to give them the advice they need. It might seem to be a glamorous life but it is a hard one and having the right people around them is vital. This is especially important when signing contracts to ensure that the right supports are there in case of injury or the player not making it. And this is where Tadgh Kennelly is exactly the right person as he has the experience of both codes. I believe it is much better for any Kerry player that wants to make it down under – and let’s be realistic there will only be the few even if Friday 26th May 2017
they are the quality – to have one of our own looking after them. I am sure it is also a comfort for the families to know that they have Tadgh Kennelly in their corner. Back to my original question – to go pro or not to go pro: My belief is that any young person who gets the opportunity should grasp it with both hands. If it works out then wonderful – if it doesn’t then at least they will have tried. There is a wider discussion around the supports that have to be put in place for those that don’t make it and in fairness to soccer has been very proactive in this. From a GAA point of view while it is only a very small number of players that make the move this will not be an issue. There is a strong network in the sport to ‘look after’ a player that come back after a professional opportunity does not work out. However if the number grow this could need to be looked at. The other issue is the compensation one and one that soccer has grasped and at least the framework is there but it is easier as it players moving within the same sport. Would Aussie Rules clubs be willing to make a contribution to GAA clubs that they sign the players from? Now that is another question. ONE AT THE START – ANOTHER AT THE END OF HIS CAREER: While a lot of the focus is on Mark O’Connor and David Clifford one Kerry star, this time in hurling, called time on his inter county career after 15 years. John ‘Tweek’ Griffin has given sterling service to both Kerry and Lixnaw and played in various Leagues plus 5 Christy Ring Cup finals winning 2. The good news for hurling fans is that he will continue to line out with his club. RACING BACK IN TRALEE: Horses will be racing around Ballybeggan Park again this Saturday as the Point to Point season reaches Tralee. A record number of 145 horses have been entered for the 7 races on Sunday. The meeting is being run by the North Kerry Harriers and they have been thanking all the support that
SWIMMERS GET READY FOR THE OFF: It is that time of the year when the Tralee Bay Swimming World Series hits the water. The first round is set for Tuesday May 30th at 7.30pm from the Slip-way. Those wishing to take part must have their membership paid. The club also has a very interesting initiative whereby when members are signing up they must all pick a date to do volunteer duty for one of the races. This way the work load is spread evenly and all members contribute. I wonder if this would work in other sports. For example when signing their children up to a football or soccer club the parent must commit to giving a night supervising the session etc. Obviously Garda vetting comes into place but it’s an interesting idea. From a fundraising point of view the Tralee Bay Swimming Club’s annual Church Gate Collection takes place this weekend. It is a big part of their fundraising for the year and again they are being clever – those who volunteer to collect will get a World Series Bonus Point which have proved very valuable over the last few years when the time comes to decide the destination of the Swimmer of the Year trophy. ROSE CONTESTANTS AT THE TRACK: The contestants for the 2017 Kerry Rose of Tralee will be guests at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Saturday night. Of course all of these will be hoping that they are the one that will be back again with all the Roses during the Festival. Back to the racing and on Friday night it’s the first rounds of the Kerry Group Club Championship for A5 confined greyhounds. Normal SIS racing on Saturday morning commences at 9.11am with an 8 race program. On Saturday night there will be a fundraiser for Fine Gael Listowel District (I wonder will any special guests turn up!) with an all sponsored program with lots of spot prizes and music after racing. The track are also taking entries for the Kerry GAA Supporters Race of Champions 550 yards with the semi-finals on Friday, June 9th for a winner’s prize of e15,000 and the Track Supporters Club N1 525 yards with first rounds on Friday, June 3rd for a winner’s prize of e2,000. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER 1 GOES EAST: The 6 Round Kerry Time Trial League is being run by the Tralee Manor West iBike under the stewardship of George Doyle. Over 40 riders faced the clock having preregistered under the new format. The host club’s Ciaran Slattery (28.31) was the top Tralee rider taking third place and his club mate Tom Gentleman 4th behind the two Sliabh Luachra riders Richard Cleverly who won in 27.47 and Sean Dineen second 16 seconds later. Tralee Manor West IBike’s Jerry McCarthy took the final League points in 6th.Suzanne O’Sullivan (Tralee Manor West iBike) was the fastest lady clocking 33.19 Kingdom’s Eoin Hillard was the top Kerry rider in the u12 section taking 5th while the same club’s Adam Lenihan was 3rd and Ciaran Commane 4th in the u16’s. The next round of the Time Trial in on June 15th with the next round of the Road Race League being hosted by Tralee Manor West on Thursday June 8th. LACEY HAVING A GOOD RAS: Tralee’s Sean Lacey is having a very good opening to the 2017 An Post Ras. After 3 of the 8 stages he is still inside the top 40 of the 186 riders still in the Ras just 3 minutes behind the leader. With a very strong international field this is a good position for Sean who is 5th Overall in the County Rider category – one he will be targeting a podium finish in. And even better is the news that his Cork Aqua Blue Sport team are 1st overall in the County Team section. TRIPLE DELIGHT FOR TIGERS AND A WIN FOR THE LADIES: Garvey’s Tralee Tigers debut season in basketball’s SuperLeague will certainly live long in the memory. And following on from their Cup win there was more good news to round off the season as the club has picked up three accolades in the Basketball Ireland Awards: Trae Pemberton is the Men’s Super League Player of the Year off the back of an incredible season with Garvey’s Tralee Warriors, which saw them scoop the Champions Trophy. Fellow club player, Ryan Leonard, has been named as the Men’s Super League Young Player of the year following a hugely impressive display for the Kerry side, while Warriors Head Coach Mark Bernsen makes it a Kerry treble by scooping the Men’s Super League Coach of the Year. Duagh’s Aine McKenna, who plays with Glanmire and Farranfore’s Emma Sherwood (Pyrobel Killester) were part of Mark Scannell’s Irish squad that defeated Luxembourg that had a great 74-65 points win over Luxembourg on Sunday. The same sides had met on Friday night with the visitors winning 67-60.
LOUISE GALVIN ON 7’S SQUAD FOR CANADE: Director of Women’s and 7s Rugby, Anthony Eddy has named the Ireland Women’s 7s squad to travel to Canada to compete at the fifth stage of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Langford on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of May. The team finished in 9th place at the Kitakyushu 7s in Japan, and are in 9th place in the overall standings. The squad of13 players will be captained by Lucy Mulhall. Ashleigh Baxter, Kim Flood, Stacey Flood, Louise Galvin, Claire Keohane, Amee-Leigh Murphy-Crowe, Sene Naoupu, Audrey O’Flynn, Hannah Tyrrell who all competed in Japan are all once again named in the squad. COUNTY KERRY CRICKETERS COME OUT ON TOP IN A LOW SCORING DIVISION 2 MATCH. Batting first County Kerry struggled against some good tight bowling (Eddie Garczynski (3 for 22), Godwin Jepatas (3 for 31) leading the way. Eventually they were bowled out for 125, top scorer being Ian Rutland with 30. In reply North Kerry struggled to start and only stubborn resistance from John Boulding who batted over 20 overs for 13 and Paul Wyre(23 not out) raised the score to 73 all out. County Kerry most successful bowlers being John Roux, Khalid Junaid and Sahzaib Shagir who all took 3 wickets. The Kerry Seconds picked up their first win of the season at the defeated Tipperary 2nds at the Oyster Oval. Kerry Seconds hit 181 all out but restricted the Tipperary side to 89. The County Kerry First squad put up a good total of 240 for 5 of their full 50 overs away to Cork Harlequins at Farmers Cross. However the home side reached their target with ease winning by 5 wickets. BIG WIN ON THE ROAD FOR THE 17’S: Kerry u17 soccer side are rewriting their short history with every game. Having won in the Cup for the first time when defeating Cobh Wanderers they have now taken 10 points from their last 5 League games. This sees Darren Aherne’s side up to joint 4th in the League, their highest ever position. They will go into this Sunday’s clash with table toppers Shamrock Rovers at Mounthawk at 2pm with great confidence. The Dublin side have only dropped points in one of their 7 games, drawing once so it should be an exciting game and a huge crowd is hoped for at Mounthawk. MOUNTHAWK GIRLS BREAK RECORDS: The Mercy Mounthawk 4 x

100 girls relay team thrilled the crowds at the Munster Schools Championships by breaking at 29 year old record clocking 49.70 to take the gold. The 4 girls are members of Tralee Harriers – Orla O’Reilly, Aoibheann O’Brien, Rachel Bowler and Aoife O’Carroll just got the better of Castletroy College who also broke that old record. Rachel Bowler took gold in the senior girls triple jump and Mervyn Shalemba won the junior boys 100 meters and was also part of the winning junior relay team. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND UP: Before the Garvey’s County Senior Championships take a break there is a big test for Austin Stacks as they face Killarney Legion in the Winner Round tonight Friday night in Connolly Park at 7.30pm. Both sides had to come through replays to get to this stage and both will be high on confidence. Stacks will be hoping that home advantage will see them through although they do not have a great record at Connolly Park. Last weekend Kerins O’Rahilly’s had a nailbiting 2-13 to 3-09 win away in Dingle. The Tralee side were 2-13 to 2-07 ahead and should have wrapped things up but they failed to convert at least two goal chances. Dingle hit back through a Paul Geaney penalty and they hit two further points but just ran out of time. Rahilly’s will be delighted with this run in the County Championship following their loss in Relegation Play-off a few weeks ago. St Brendan’s came up against a rampant Dr Crokes who hit 7 goals in a 22 point win as the All Ireland champions once again showed their intent of having another long season!! ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 6,7,13 and 19 and the next jackpot will be e2,200 with the draw in Skelper Quane’s bar on Sunday night. Juvenile Players of Week: Jace Flynn was the u6 Player of the Week while the u8’s had an athletic session. The u10’s went to Spa for the Go Games and enjoyed their games against Churchill, Ardfert and Ballyheigue. FENIT NEEDS ITS DIVING BOARDS Diving boards must be restored as a matter of urgency at the public bathing slip in Fenit. That was the clear message delivered by Billy Ryle at the local launch of his book, “From Fenit bathing slip to the High Court – a five year journey of honour,” at Fenit Parish Hall on Friday night. The large attendance at the event which was hosted by Fenit and Spa Youth Club, heard Billy explain that the bathing slip has never recovered from the loss of the diving boards in 2004 in a deal which resulted in Kerry County Council taking over the facility. The diving boards had a magnetic appeal, particularly for younger swimmers. During the past fifteen years, footfall at the bathing slip has decreased considerably due to the loss of the high and low diving boards. A generation of young people has missed out on the thrill of diving at the bathing slip. Billy told his audience that a magnificent marina had been established on the Pier in Fenit a few years ago by laying a foundation of rock armour on the sea bed and building the infrastructure on it. Using similar engineering 40

and construction principles, he said, the bathing slip can be extended about 40m into deep water, thereby guaranteeing permanent and adequate water depth for swimming and spring board diving. Billy said that Fenit is now a major tourist destination and ever increasing numbers are enjoying a summer holiday in the area. Infrastructural expansion at the bathing slip to include diving boards is a necessary addition to the recreational facilities in the area and will restore a once very important and popular feature at the bathing slip. Billy has already had a preliminary discussion about the project with Deputy Martin Ferris, who is totally supportive of the plan. Billy hopes to meet with the other North Kerry based T.D., Deputy John Brassil in the next few days to enlist his support. He will also brief the members of Kerry County Council from the Tralee Municipal District. The active support of Deputies Brassil and Ferris and the local Councillors will be crucial in securing LEADER funding for the project. Friday 26th May 2017
Billy Ryle is pictured with leaders and members of Fenit and Spa Youth Club at the local launch of his book in Fenit Parish Hall on Friday night Billy intends to meet with representatives of Fenit Development Association and other local organisations over the next few weeks to build a ground swell of support for the restoration of the diving boards. He hopes to be in a position to call a public meeting at Fenit Parish Hall before the end of June, which will mandate a working group to put a feasible proposal before Kerry County Council. Fáilte Ireland, promoter of The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s long-distance touring route
along the western sea board has recently placed a permanent notice board and WAW logo in Fenit. The notice board is dominated by a picture of a diver, springing off the high diving board at the bathing slip in Fenit. Some people might suggest that the notice board is misleadingly advertising a facility that was hasn’t been available since 2001. On the contrary, Billy Ryle sees the notice board promoting a facility that will shortly be restored! Billy Ryle
