Medical Matters HAY FEVER BY DR KEVIN RYLE While for most the arrival of summer signals the start of long bright days, warm weather and holidays, for others it means the start to a season of irritated eyes, sneezing and nasal congestion. Indeed it is estimated that up to 20% of people are affected by hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis). It is a condition that usually is at its worst mid-summer but can start in spring and extend into late autumn. People's symptoms can also peak at different times of the year depending on which pollen or spore they are most allergic to.
Hay fever is a condition where pollen or spores (e.g. mould) cause the lining of the nose and upper airways to become inflamed and swollen. The body's immune system over-reacts to these pollens or spores causing an allergic reaction. The typical symptoms are a blocked and runny nose, sneezing, sinus congestion causing facial pain and headaches, irritated, itchy eyes (allergic conjunctivitis) and even extreme tiredness for those suffering from more severe hay fever. Unfortunately it is difficult to cure the condition but many treatments including non-sedating antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops may help. Other self-help advice includes: try to stay indoors with windows closed during peak pollen hours (late morning and late afternoon),
if driving during these hours keep the car windows closed, wear sunglasses that wrap around to minimise pollen exposure to your eyes, holiday by the sea where off shore breezes keep pollen levels low, use nasal filters (e.g. “Allergy Nasal Filter”) to capture pollen before it enters your nose and get someone else to cut your grass or wear a face mask if you have to cut it yourself . Keep an eye on pollen counts which are readily available in the media or on apps such as “Hay Fever Relief”. If you remain troubled by your symptoms you should speak to your GP for further advice.
Some people may develop “hay fever” symptoms all year round and this is called perennial allergic rhinitis. In this condition, the person is usually allergic to things other than just pollen such as animal dander, house dust mites, moulds or spores. If the symptoms are troublesome or associated with asthma (wheeze, breathlessness or a persistent dry cough) it may be worth having allergy tests with your doctor to see exactly what you are allergic to and what avoidance measures to take.

WHATS DIFFERENT ABOUT BROOKFIELD?
Elisha "This year , we celebrate working with students for 30 years , since 1988 " says Principal Elisha Dowling . "I like to emphasise the word 'with' as it conveys the approach we take with all students who come here ...We have created an atmosphere in the College where students are expected and encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. The most important part of this equation (yes , Elisha also teaches Maths!) has to be our teachers .At present we have 15 teachers in the school , all highly qualified teachers who are motivated and enthusiastic about teaching ...They just love teaching ...and that does come out in the students! And because there is rarely any changeover of teachers , that gives our students consistency ..very important in the exam years . We dont have uniforms and teachers are known on a first name basis... this all fosters maturity amongst the students. All our students are given regular assessments and each is assigned a tutor who meets with them several times during the year , discussing progress and giving both advice and guidance.Career guidance also gets priority during the Senior Cycle as we find it answers a lot of questions that students may have and gives them clarification. Its very satisfying to hear, maybe even a few years after they've gone that former students have found their time with us to be hugely positive... thats enough for me "

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... 11-year-old Dingle pianist scoops Musician of the Year title Kerry School of Music’s Spring Music Festival Endof-Term Ensemble Day workshops and concert took place yesterday, Sunday, May27th in the Rose Hotel, Tralee. Musicians and singers gathered from all over the county to participate in rehearsals and workshops culminating in the End ofof-Year Concert which took place at 6.30pm in a packed function room. Kerry School of Music Senior and Junior orchestras, Flute Choir, Children’s Choir, Junior and Senior Music Theatre groups and Adult Sing Circle all contributed items to the concert. Also included in the concert is the final of the Musician of the Year Competition, now in its 35th year. Eight finalists have been chosen from an initial two hundred entrants who submitted performances for adjudication at the end of last month. Twenty performances went through to the semifinal stage on Saturday, April 28th in the School of Music’s Fleischmann Studio when eight performers were
selected to go through to the grand final. Although it was the first ever all-female final in the competition’s 35-year history, the geographic spread of the finalists vividly illustrated the county-wide reach of the school. 11-year-old Dingle Pianist Ava Duffy was declared overall winner- the youngest winner ever in the competition’s 35-year history. Ava studies piano with School of Music Director Aidan O’ Caroll. Listowel Flautist Eva Munnelly, Spa/Fenit Violinist Clodagh Gaynor, Tarbert Soprano Caitriona Fitzmaurice, Castlegregory Pianist Katarina Roberts and Killorglin Traditional Pianist Orlaith O’ Sullivan were declared joint runnersup while Tralee Pianist Jolin Weng and Killarney Violinist Cliona Lynch came in as second runners-up. This is the second time in as many months that Ava has come out on top in competition. She was also the youngest ever winner of the coveted Rotary Club of

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Poetic success for Elise Talented primary school pupil, Elise from St. Brendan’s N.S in Fenit, is celebrating this week after winning an award in a major poetry competition. With her poem ‘The Sea of Hope’, Elise saw off tough competition from across the island to win the ‘Primary Senior’ category of the 2018 Trócaire poetry competition. The annual competition, in association with Poetry Ireland, uses the arts to raise awareness about the leading global justice issues of our time. This year submissions focused on the theme ‘Until Love Conquers Fear’, which examines the importance of showing support and solidarity with people facing hunger and injustice.
The 2018 winners, ranging from primary school pupils to published adult poets, were awarded their prizes recently at the National Library of Ireland. Trócaire director Eamonn Meehan said: “It’s such a thrill for the youngest children here to have their work published in a booklet alongside well known Irish poets. “The poetry competition creates a synergy of wisdom, creativity and talent, which encourages young minds to keep exploring ways to make our world a better place.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK!
Even though I’m not doing it full time, I’m still working as a Makeup Artist in Australia, why? Because I LOVE it. I have my kit with me and I’m so lucky that I can do what I love anywhere in the world. So I was thinking this week I would share my own journey and what I would recommend you do if you also want to be a Makeup Artist. You want to be a part of one of the MOST saturated industries in Ireland at the moment. Just letting you know. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just want to emphasise that so you’re aware of the industry and it’s relevant to the points that I’m about to make…
BACKSTORY
When I first initially got into makeup, I literally taught myself through YouTube tutorials, so I was what you call ‘Self-Taught’. I mostly did my own face and occasionally, I did other faces too. Let me just make a point, just because you do your own face perfectly, does not mean you will be good at doing someone else’s face. You learn by practicing, on all different face shapes, ages, skin types etc.
putting products on someone’s face, in my opinion, if you are charging money, you should be qualified. Why? Hygiene.
Makeup Artists, if they’re not working from a counter, will most likely charge depending on both the products they use, and their experience. How do you use this to your advantage? If you have more experience, you are likely to be more skilled. Working on Counter for example, gives you a direct insight to how brands work, how makeup works, and you get to do makeup on SO many different people. Makeup isn’t just doing someone’s face, it’s an experience. You should be able to interact with you client, make recommendations based on their skin type and use the products that you know will work on their face.
BASICALLY…
QUALIFICATION
Some of the most amazing Makeup Artists that I follow are ‘Self-Taught’, but they only do makeup on themselves. Doing makeup on clients is completely different. You are

Some makeup courses are waaaaaayyy too expensive, unless you want to do special effects or something. You don’t need to pay a fortune, more money won’t make you any more talented, practise will.
EXPERIENCE
I moved to Dublin - where there was A LOT more Makeup Artists, who not only were more experienced than me, THEY HAD QUALIFICATIONS. I was in the middle of interviewing for a job on a Makeup Counter, I got through 4 stages, to the final round. It was between me and another girl. She got the job, I was told by the owner it was because out of the two of us, she was qualified and I was not. So I decided to get my own qualification. Got a job with a huge international brand immediately after, which led me to become the Senior Makeup Artist on Counter, go to London training and do Makeup on Irish Celebrities for The IFTA’s. Initially I just wanted to get a qualification so it would make applying for jobs easier, but now that I have got ITEC qualified and have had experience working as a Makeup Artist I see how important it is to do a course in Makeup. The ITEC Qualification means that you’re Qualified Internationally(AKA - You can work anywhere in the world!)
something that I never would have known if I did not do a course.
If you want to be a Makeup Artist, amazing! Practise on yourself, post on social media, practise on friends, wash your brushes, build a CLIENT ONLY kit, get a qualification, get experience! In a Makeup Course, as well as learning about makeup, you learn the importance of being hygienic when it comes to makeup. Little things such as cold sores, eye infections or minor skin conditions are not always visible on the skin and can be passed on VERY easily. If one of my clients has a cold sore, it is a contraindication, which means I cannot do makeup on them. This is
Friday 1st June 2018
If you expect clients to invest in you, be willing to invest time and money in yourself and your kit.

FITNESS!
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE, I hope you’re all enjoying this amazing week! Since moving to Australia, I’ve been waking up a lot earlier, usually 6am. When you think about it, being healthy, fit, going to to gym and improving your nutrition are all elements of self improvement. And I want to implement every method of self improvement that I can, because being healthy isn’t just about the physical but also the mental. You can be as physically healthy as you want but if you’re not as healthy mentally, you’re not living to your full potential! This year I’ve been reading more, through reading more books and articles, I’ve become engrossed in improving myself fully. The brain is a muscle too you know! Anyway, back to getting up early. I read last year that the most successful people in the world all share the same trait they get up early. And by getting up early I mean EARLY - all before 8am. Most between the hours of 5 and 7am. Some studies show that 90% of executives wake up before 6am on weekdays and nearly 50% of self-made millionaires wake up at least three hours before their workday actually begins.
Why get up early? • It gives more time for things like having a proper morning routine, journalling, goal setting, answering emails and… working out! All before ‘most people’ ever get up at all. Getting a head start on the day before distractions and obligations arise. • Attacking the day on your own terms first thing gives a sense of control. By getting up early though, these people are not losing sleep they are going to bed earlier and all get 6-8hrs a night. • Willpower is highest in the morning which leads to better decision making.

PADDY’S LOVE OF SPORT SHINES THROUGH
MEADOWLANDS 20th CELEBRATIONS! from Fri 15th to Sun 17th June
Tralee’s Meadowlands Hotel will be joined by a host of sports stars including soccer legend Paul McGrath and Cork’s Seán Óg Ó hAilpín to celebrate its 20th anniversary as a business with a weekend festival from 15th to 17th June and all in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation / Palliative Care. The Meadowlands hotel, established by Paddy Ó Mathúna along with his wife Peigí, opened on 19th June in 1998 and has grown in size, now employing over 60 staff and boasting 58 bedrooms, Johnny Frank’s Bar & Lounge, An Moínéar Restaurant and a 300 capacity events centre.
Why the Hotel business, Paddy? Paddy responds with a typical West Kerry phrase when asked why he got into the hotel business. “I don’t know what I was thinking really but I am still here most days after 20 years so I must be enjoying it. The first weekend in June, 1998 was a pure nightmare. I remember it was very stressful. As usual the opening night came upon us too quickly. People were arriving and we were nowhere near ready. The following few weeks were also interesting to say the least. The hotel business is at times very difficult, especially during the recession but thankfully we got out the other side. It is a business that doesn’t stop and it is difficult to switch off. But that being said, every day is different and it has more ups than downs.”
Making 4 Stars... Our Proudest Moment! Paddy’s wife Peigí Ó Mathúna remembers her proudest moment with the hotel, “It would have to be being awarded four stars in April 2000, thus becoming the first 4 star hotel in Tralee. It was a very proud achievement but witnessing a happy customer on any given day still continues to stir pride.”
Meadowlands... A long tradition of supporting sport in Tralee The Meadowlands Hotel has a long tradition of supporting sports organisations in Tralee and currently sponsors local GAA, soccer and basketball clubs, the Kerry GAA Ticket Van, The Chain Gang Cycling Club, Meadowlands Golf Society, Tralee Marathon, Tralee Golf Society and Tralee Warriors Basketball Club, many of whom will play a role in making this a sport themed, fun-filled weekend of activity for young and old, and with every event raising funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation, a great local cause.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD Question My partner and I are planning a holiday in Spain. How do we access public healthcare services if one of us becomes ill when abroad? Answer You and your partner each need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card allows you to access public healthcare services if you become ill or get injured when travelling to or visiting certain European countries. It doesn’t cover private treatment or the cost of repatriation to Ireland if required. The countries covered by the card are the 28 member states of the EU, the three other members of the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Switzerland. You don’t need the card for a visit to the UK if you can show that you are ordinarily resident in Ireland. In practice, this means showing a driving licence, passport or similar document. If you have a smartphone you can download the free EHIC app. This includes emergency phone numbers and information about treatments and costs covered. The app does not replace the card. If you already have a medical card or Drugs Payment Scheme card, you can apply online for your EHIC at ehic.ie. Otherwise, you can download an application form from ehic.ie or get one from your Local Health Office. You need to provide your name, address, date of birth and Personal Public Service number (PPS number). You may also need to show proof that you are ordinarily resident in Ireland. If your EHIC has expired you can renew it online at ehic.ie. If your details have changed (for example, your address) you need to contact your Local Health Office to renew the card. If you have concerns about getting a new or renewed card in time, you can get a Temporary Replacement Certificate, either online or from your Local Health Office. You may also wish to consider taking out private travel insurance for expenses that are not covered by the EHIC (such as the costs of repatriation).

The waitress says, “Sorry, but the guy next to you got the last bowl”. He looks over and sees that the guy’s finished his meal, but the bowl of chili is still full. He asks, “Are you going to eat that chili?” The other guy says, “No. Help yourself”. He slides the bowl of chili over and starts to eat. When he gets about half way down, his spoon hits something. He looks down sees a dead mouse and immediately pukes all the chili back into the bowl. The other guy says, “Yeah, that’s about as far as I got, too”

TORQUING CARS! MOTORING CHAT ! KIA is to reveal its first 48-volt diesel mild-hybrid later in the year. The new ‘EcoDynamics+’ powertrain is claimed to cut CO2 emissions by boosting acceleration from a 48-volt battery. It will come first in the brand’s Sportage SUV and later in the new Ceed small family car. Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan will become the world’s most expensive production SUV when it goes on sale at the end of the year. The brand’s first SUV will cost around €300,000, but anticipated demand for personal options will inflate that sum significantly. The car is built on the same aluminium platform that underpins the Phantom and all future new cars from the company. It is driven by the same 570hp, 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V12 petrol engine as the Phantom. Different world. Volvo are showing the first new V60 estate here. The hand-built demonstration model is on show at the brand’s pop-up shop on Merrion Row in Dublin from May 11 to June 8. Just for the record, approximately 1,268 SEAT cars are affected by the latest seatbelt recall, including 821 Ibizas and 447 Aronas. The Spanish company is advising customers not to use the middle seat of the Ibiza
CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED SIGNIFICANT OTHER
My wife is having a significant birthday and I would like to buy her a used, fun and reliable soft-top. What would you recommend? RM HJ......A Mazda MX-5 2.0 Sport.
PLANT HIGHER
My wife has constant pain from a long-standing back problem. She needs a car that absorbs bumps brilliantly with a seat that has lumbar adjustment and, preferably, an upward sloping grab handle. Can you suggest anything that isn’t huge? AC HJ......The new Citroén C4 Cactus with advanced comfort seats and suspension, on sale now.
CIVIC IMMUNITY
Does the VW Group 1.2 TSI engine range suffer the same timing chain issues as the 1.4 TSI? I’m thinking of buying either a 2016 Seat Leon 1.2 TSI or a 2016 Honda Civic 1.4. MF HJ ....From about 2013 (though not consistently), the EA211 engines switched from timing chains to belts. A Honda Civic 1.4i VTEC is likely to be more reliable than any of the VW Group cars.
A WINTER’S TRAIL
I cannot help feeling that winter tyres are a bit of a con. During the 1960s my father had a Rover 90 P4 that was shod with narrow, high-profile cross-plies. When the roads in the Lake District were covered in snow, he would drive us all over the area without any difficulty. AC HJ ....In 1970 I had an earlier 1949 Rover P3 that I drove around the roads of Northumberland during a snowy winter, but it wouldn’t go up an ice covered onein-three even with a sack of feed in the boot. On siped-tread all-weather tyres, a modern car will.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR FIRST COLUMN OF JUNE 2018 TRALEE ADVERTISER: INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL COMES TO TRALEE: There was great joy amongst the sporting public of Tralee with the news that the town will host a high profile international soccer tournament. The 73rd u16 Victory Shield International Football Tournament will take place from November 12th to 16th with teams from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales taking part. Ireland, under manager Paul Osam win this tournament for first time in Northern Ireland last October and so Ireland were then hosts for this year’s tournament. The awarding of the tournament to Tralee is testament to the standing of John O’Regan within the FAI and as member of the International Committee. The tournament was confirmed this week when FAI Match Operations Officer Joanne Martin visited Mounthawk Park, Christy Leahy Park and Tralee Dynamos where the games will take place with the teams based in the Rose Hotel. Some work will need to be done at the venues but not a huge amount and the tournament will be of a huge sporting and financial benefit to Tralee at what would normally be a quiet time of the year. ANOTHER TRALEE PLAYER WEARING THE GREEN: Following one from last week where we had three players on the Irish u16 team this week another Tralee native pulled on the green jersey. Ex Tralee Dynamos player Brian Fitzgerald who now plays with top junior side Cobh Wanderers was part of the Irish Amateur team that defeated England C 4-2 in Dublin. BIG DAY AT DYNAMOS: This Saturday morning, June 2nd, will be a big one for a number of players at Tralee Dynamos. They are holding their 3rd annual Joe Flynn Memorial u12 Awards where players will be named a Player of the Year and Most Improved Player of the Year. This is a fantastic way to remember Joe who was had a life long

association with soccer in Kerry as well as with a number of other sports. As well as the u12’s Player of the Year awards there will be presentations to Andy Rogers who is the captain of this year’s Kennedy Cup team and to Sean Kennedy and Leo Gaxha who were on the recent Irish u16 team in Sweden. Also getting presentations are Rian O’Sullivan for his Irish u19 cap, Cian Kennedy who is now playing college’s football in the US with the University of San Diego, Paul White who broke Kettering Town’s clean sheet record by going 20 games in a row without conceding a goal. The previous record was 18 and stood since 1978 and Alex Hoare who is training with the Ireland u13 Development squad. It all kicks off at Dynamos at 11am with Joanne Flynn representing her family on the day and refreshments will also be served. KEEP TRYING AND THE TIDE WILL TURN: The Kerry u17’s have been playing well over the last few games without getting their reward. But that changed last night when they defeated Limerick in the first round of the Mark Farran Memorial Cup 3-2 after extra time. Kerry were 2-0 through Liam Collins and David Oba before Limerick hit two goals in quick succession to send the game to extra time. Shane O’Connell in the Kerry goal had to make a great save to keep the sides level. But the winner was goal to win any game with a great strike from Jordan Barry to send the big Kerry crowd home and send the Kerry 17’s into their summer break on a very positive note. The Kerry 15’s were unlucky to go down 1-0 away to Cobh in their last game before their break. The transfer window will open in July and both squads will probably look to bring in a new player or two. HAPPY PARK LIFE: There have been additions to the trophy cabinet in Christy Leahy Park this week as their Youth team defeated Killarney Celtic in the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youth Cup final replay. Their goals came from Michael Slattery who was set up by the excellent Thomas Friday 1st June 2018
Burke with Aaron Ward getting the second. Captain Shane Jordan was presented the trophy by Jimmy mother Marie Falvey. The Park’s u14’s continued their all-conquering season by winning the Tom Hayes 14’s Cup defeating a gallant Division 2 side Fenit side who enjoyed a great run to final. This side are the SFAI Regional champions and were semi-finalists in the Skechers National Cup. They can complete a double in Kerry on Saturday if they defeat Killorglin in what will be one of their biggest tests of the season. St Brendan’s Park will host their Annual Awards Night and Presentations at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium on this Friday night June 1st. Presentations will take place after each race starting with the Academies.
few holes-in-one most notably for Tralee’s Jason Cregan who secured two in finishing on 14 under par. Top scorer in the seniors was another Jason from Tralee however, Jason O’Regan who finished with 16 under par the best score of the day. Deerpark’s Damien Fleming had 13 under in qualifying while the last spot went to John McGrath. In the Intermediate qualifying Padraig Hobbert took one of the five places while In the Junior grade County Chairman David Hobbert of Tralee had the best score for the grade with three under making it through to the Finals in Lakeside in Templemore on the weekend of June 16th/17th. This weekend is one of the major weekends of the year in Pitch & Putt in the National Matchplay Finals in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Six Kerry players, five men and one lady take part in two of the three different events including Tralee’s Jamie Blake who takes on Fermoy’s Peter O’Donovan. For the first time in over a decade the county will have a female competitor in a new Ladies event for the National Matchplay this year as Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor competes in the 16 player Ladies Nett Section. She faces a tough encounter with former National Junior Ladies Strokeplay Champion Sarah O’Neill from Cork in the First Round.
BUSY WEEKEND AT THE TRACK: Friday night will be a very busy night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with the Grandstand Restaurant celebrating its 21st birthday party. Invited back are former Tanaiste Dick Spring and former Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Jimmy Deenihan who back on June 1st 1997 opened the Grandstand Restaurant along with other dignitaries. Our special guest on the night to cut the 21st Birthday cake will be Michael O’ Muircheartaigh. There will also be music before and after racing, face painting and bouncy castle and lots of other side attractions. There will be top class racing on Friday night with the semi- finals of the Kerry GAA Supporters Club sponsored Race of Champions plus a number of top class supporting 12 dog stakes as well as a fundraiser for the Park soccer club. On Saturday night it’s the semifinals of the Stadium Supporters Club N1 525yds plus a number of 12 dog stakes in the build- up to the annual Kerry GAA Supporters Club Race of Champions final night on Friday June 8th.
TRALEE ANNUAL BOXING TOURNAMENT A KNOCK OUT SUCCESS: There was a great turnout at Tralee Boxing Club end of season annual tournament with 10 boxing clubs represented - Bantry, Cashenvale, Sliabh lucrha, Sunnyside, Tipperary, Vikings, Urlingford, Corpus-Christi, OLOL joining the hosts Tralee. The best boxer on the day was our own Francie O Doherty (Tralee) who brings a great energy to the ring and for just a small lad he has a big heart. The winner of the Thomas Kelliher Memorial Cup was Christopher Mongans who won his All Ireland Title in March of this year. Sisters Mary & Michelle McDonagh are two who always impress when they take to the ring and Mary will be official in September next and coaches are expecting big things from her. Well done also to Cashen Vale’s Kori Goad who won the National 86kg Girl 5 boxing championship in Dublin at the weekend. Kerry has never had such a strong squad of boxers and are blessed with some great talent at the moment, and need to improve as a Kerry team so maybe the powers that be can improve training tournaments and inter county sparing etc.
SUMMER TIME IS PITCH AND PUTT TIME: Last Sunday saw the Munster Strokeplay Qualifiers take place in Deerpark in Killarney with 12 players in three different grades advancing to the Finals in Tipperary next month. The seniors had a

On Bank Holiday Monday St Brendan’s will hold their open sports from 1pm in Ardfert with events from tots to u14’s. KERRY CRICKETERS SEE OFF CORK BUT WENT DOWN TO TIPPERARY: Anytime a Kerry team beats Cork is a good day. The Kerry Seconds put up a big total of 300 for 7 with Jonathan Boulding top scoring on 77. They bowled their Rebel visitors out for 250 for 7 to win by 50 runs. The Kerry Thirds went down to Tipperary Seconds in a low scoring game at the Oyster Oval. Kerry were all done for 139 with Tipperary making 141 from 7. This weekend in Munster Division 1 County Kerry 2 face Limerick 2 at the Oyster Oval on Saturday while on Sunday in the Munster Minor quarter final County Kerry 3 take on North Kerry at the same venue. KERRY PARKRUNNERS ENCOURAGED TO NOMINATE THEIR VHI PARKRUN HERO: Vhi is encouraging parkrunners from County Kerry to nominate their Vhi parkrun Hero. The monthly award looks to recognise and reward inspirational, hardworking and dedicated members of the parkrun community who embody the ethos of parkrun or have made an outstanding contribution - be they participants or volunteers. If you think someone from your local parkrun deserves to be celebrated as a Vhi parkrun Hero nominate them using the online application form. Winners will be announced monthly and will receive a €250 One4All voucher and plaque courtesy of Vhi. parkrun in partnership with Vhi supports local communities in organising free, weekly, timed 5k runs every Saturday morning at 90 venues all over Ireland, with around 10,000 people of every age and ability taking part each week. The events are organised by more than 1,000 volunteers every weekend from Bere Island to Ballina to Ballinteer. Over 190,000 registered participants have run more than 5 million kilometres at parkrun Ireland events since it started here in November 2012. Originally launched in the UK in 2004, parkrun is the single biggest participation running event globally with nearly three million registered participants and an average of 165,000 weekly participants. Nominate your Vhi parkrun Hero at www.vhi.ie/running or register for a parkrun near you at www. parkrun.ie. New registrants should select their chosen event as their home location. You will then receive a personal barcode which acts as your free entry to any parkrun event worldwide. COMMUNITY GAMES: Blennerville / Ballyard have put together an u10 Gaelic Football team for either all boys or girls or mixed. They are in action on
Monday with Padraig O’Leary – Kerins O’Rahillys - doing great work as trainer. Well done to Rachel Mulgrew and her cross country team who finished 4th in the National Community Games finals last weekend. TRIPLE VICTORY THE HOPE FOR KERRY: This is a big weekend for Kerry GAA teams with the seniors opening their Munster and All Ireland campaign when they face Clare in June. The Kingdom will be missing Shane Enright, Donnchadh Walsh and Daithi Casey in the Munster semi-final. However Kerry has a strong squad and should qualify for another Munster final. They will again face Cork – who surprised some by easily defeating Tipperary so the two powers will again take each other on. But before that they will have to lower the Banner when the game throws in 3.30pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium.
opponents in the first half where an early goal, good defending and asserting their dominance in attack left them with a nine point lead at half time with a score of 2-07 to 0-04. Castlegregory started the second half at a high tempo and for the next fifteen minutes kept their opponents scoreless and added five points to their own tally. They had a penalty saved which would have left only a single score between the sides before Stack’s pointed from a free midway through the half. The second half was truly competitive but it was the lads from the Rock that pushed on to earn victory on the night - Austin Stacks 4-11, Castlegregory 2-09. PARNELLS NEWS: The Parnells summer camp will take place from Monday the 9th to Thursday the 12th of July, 10 am to 1 pm in Caherslee. Application forms will be distributed at training on Tuesday and Friday nights and hopefully available in all local schools costing only €35 per child.
The Kerry Ladies get proceedings underway when they take on Waterford from 1.30pm. Hopefully a big Kerry crowd will come to the Stadium early as they get things back on track after the recent turmoil. The Kerry hurlers go to Navan to take on Meath in their fourth McDonagh Cup game at 3pm. Kerry are on two points with Meath winless from their three games to date. Kerry will have one game left after this with a top 4 place still on the agenda.
Munster U15 Super 10 Competition: Parnells were in a group with Abbeydorney and Crotta loosing out to the former by three points and Crotta by the same amount. Focus now shifts to Under 15 B Championship which is scheduled to commence on Monday 2nd July. We will continue to train on Friday nights with the Under 14’s in Caherslee. If we can get full numbers at training we have a very good chance in this competition – please do your best to attend.
KERRY FALLS AT MUNSTER JUNIOR CAMOGIE FINAL HURDLE: Kerry’s defence of their Munster Junior Camogie title ended with defeat to Cork in this year’s decider. The Kingdom went down 1-12 to 0-8 with their scores coming from Patrice Diggin, Jackie Horgan and Caoimhe Shanahan. Kerry will now concentrate on the Championship which starts in July.
BALLYHEIGUE GAA BECOMES SMOKE-FREE: The GAA are now encouraging all clubs to become smoke-free zones. Ballyheigue GAA sports-field, club rooms and surrounding grounds will become a smoke/E-cigarettefree area at all times from Saturday 2nd June. The launch will take place at 12pm on Saturday 2nd June. We will provide light refreshments in the club rooms where all the children’s posters will be on display.
THE ROSE HOTEL SPONSORS KLGFA JUVENILE COUNTY LEAGUE: The Rose Hotel are delighted to join forces with the KLGFA Juvenile County League as sponsors. At the launch event on Wednesday evening, Mark Sullivan, General Manager, said “The Rose Hotel are thrilled to be associated with the underage ladies county football leagues, we have a lot in common; the hotel is young and blossoming just like all the underage teams and we look forward to achieving great things together. The club is thrilled with the win of the u16 Boys Basketball team in the Community Games National finals. The u12 Singers came 4th in their competition. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors had a big win in the County League over John Mitchels. They will face Dr Crokes on June 9th. The B’s had an even bigger win over Kilgarvan 6-13 to 0-12 in Division 5. The u17’s went down to Gneeveguilla but won against Finuge and are in Killorglin on Monday night. All the Academy teams enjoyed their training this week with u12 A and B’s away to An Ghaeltacht. The A’s were beaten while the B’s won. The u14’s lost out in extra time while the u15’s were in Munster Super 10 action and qualified for the finals in Mallow on June 15th.
