MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Sean has heard about a new data law called GDPR which came in on the 25/5/2018 and he was wondering what it was all about. GDPR is a new regulation, which has come in directly throughout the European Union in response to the world of big data. As Data becomes more portable and our data is sent to so many different business and government organisations there is even greater need now for people’s data to be protected. The new rules provide that everybody in a business or organization needs to be more aware of protecting people’s information. The GDPR ensures that businesses must: 1. Know what information they hold and why they have it 2. Must Manage data in a structured way that they can retrieve it easily e.g. proper file storage 3. Must Know who is responsible for it 4. Encrypt what they wouldn’t want to be disclosed 5. Design a security aware culture in their business or organisation 6. Be prepared – to expect the best but prepare for the worst The GDPR applies to ‘controllers’ and ‘processors’ of data. ‘personal data’ meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier. The new rules will require businesses large and small to transform their policies, structure and personnel to ensure compliance and adherence. Data protection and security has to be built into the fabric of organisations. Security and compliance people should be very concerned with getting the detail right, every body should care about and be aware of the principles, at every level and in every discipline. Privacy notices will be more transparent, consumer rights will be upheld and publicised, and news about data breaches will travel faster and be harder to cover up. In addition to previous consumer rights consumers now have new rights to restrict processing and to data portability. Data portability means being able to get a copy of a digital file and have it sent to them or a third party in certain circumstances. Legaleats: Did you hear the Privacy Commissioner took down a bunch of websites for collecting too much information? That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Medical Matters HOW TO BE SUN SMART By Dr David Buckley TEN RULES FOR PEOPLE WITH FAIR OR SENSITIVE SKIN, THOSE WITH SUN DAMAGE AND FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PREVENT PREMATURE AGING OF THEIR SKIN.

5. Avoid going out in the middle of the day without protection (11

1. Too much sun (or sun beds) can cause skin cancer especially in Irish people

not just the summer months. Be extra careful when overseas in sunny countries.

who have sensitive skin. Excessive sun exposure (or sun beds) will also prematurely age the skin and cause wrinkles.

2. Cover up in the sunny weather – wear a broad rimmed cotton or felt (not straw) hat that covers your face, ears and the back of your neck. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers or a long dress.

3. Put a total sun block on the exposed skin (e.g. face, ears, neck, hands and feet).

Choose a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater (i.e. the amount of UVB blockage). UVA protection factor must be at least one-third of the labelled SPF so choosing a sunscreen with a higher SPF will also mean high UVA protection.

4. Beware of a cooling breeze, especially on a cloudy day when out bathing,

golďŹ ng, gardening or on a boat as it may temporarily mask the burning eects of the sun rays which may be hidden by the clouds.

a.m. – 2 p.m.) when the sun is most dangerous.

6. Take care to protect your skin from the sun in spring and autumn,

7. Never use a sun bed. 8. Remember there is no such thing as a “safe tan. Tanning is a sign

of skin damage. However, fake tans are safe, but you still must use all the above precautions (i.e. total sun blocks and protective clothing) when in the sun.

9. If you are being sun smart to protect your

skin from ultra violet light you should consider taking a vitamin D supplement (approximately 800 iu or 20 Îźg per day) as the sun shining on our skin is our principal source ofvitamin D.

WHATS DIFFERENT ABOUT BROOKFIELD?

Elisha "This year , we celebrate working with students for 30 years , since 1988 " says Principal Elisha Dowling . "I like to emphasise the word 'with' as it conveys the approach we take with all students who come here ...We have created an atmosphere in the College where students are expected and encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. The most important part of this equation (yes , Elisha also teaches Maths!) has to be our teachers .At present we have 15 teachers in the school , all highly qualified teachers who are motivated and enthusiastic about teaching ...They just love teaching ...and that does come out in the students! And because there is rarely any changeover of teachers , that gives our students consistency ..very important in the exam years . We dont have uniforms and teachers are known on a first name basis... this all fosters maturity amongst the students. All our students are given regular assessments and each is assigned a tutor who meets with them several times during the year , discussing progress and giving both advice and guidance.Career guidance also gets priority during the Senior Cycle as we find it answers a lot of questions that students may have and gives them clarification. Its very satisfying to hear, maybe even a few years after they've gone that former students have found their time with us to be hugely positive... thats enough for me "

JUST SOME OF OUR REVIEWS ........................................... We were enormously impressed not only by the quality of the teaching but also by the very obvious commitment you have to fulfil each students potential. (Parents review)

Very structured way of teaching and makes sure everyone gets what they're capable of achieving.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Siamsa Tíre is Ireland’s first theatre to achieve Green Certification Siamsa Tíre announced this week that it is the first theatre in Ireland to achieve Creative Green Certification under a scheme run by London based charity, Julie’s Bicycle. Creative Green is the only international environmental certification scheme designed specifically for the creative and cultural industries. Creative Green is an international community of pioneering cultural organisations that recognise and celebrate environmental best practice of events, venues, museums, galleries, festivals and offices/studios using the transparent and methodical Creative Green Framework. Siamsa Tíre was awarded three out of five stars based on points awarded for Commitment, Understanding and Improvement. Catherine Bottrill, Creative Green Lead, Julie’s Bicycle comments, “Huge congratulations to Siamsa Tíre for achieving three stars under the Creative Green Award for the terrific strides that have been made. We know this is due to the unceasing efforts of the Green Team and broader staff commitment who have enthusiastically and passionately worked to make sustainability a natural part of the day-to-day. We are

delighted that Siamsa Tíre has joined this community of best practice, and are leading the way in mobilising ambition across Ireland.” Catriona Fallon, CEO Siamsa Tíre comments, “This is a really exciting award for Siamsa Tíre. Over the last number of years, the staff team, along with the Board of Siamsa Tíre, has been working collectively to combat Climate Change. The work we have undertaken has pushed us to look at other ways in which we negatively impact on the environment and try to address these. In 2017, Siamsa Tíre decided

to formalise and implement comprehensive Greening Policies. The first step was to increase energy efficiency and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. With generous funding from Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) under the BEC scheme, and our core funder the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Siamsa Tíre insulated the building, converted from an oil fired heating system to an Air to Water Heat Pump system and installed 40 photo-voltaic panels on the roof of the building. It also replaced all of the building lighting and as

much of the stage lighting as possible with LED lights. This was also supported by SE Systems, Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-operative (KSEC), Transition Kerry, Tralee Tidy Towns and Kerry County Council. This year, staff working groups have been formed to start developing and implementing green policies across waste and water management, biodiversity, transport and travel as well as procurement

Sharon swings open her Salon “Scissor Hands” The Open Day for Scissor Hands Unisex Hair Salon was a great success. People enjoyed coming into the new Salon to have a look around. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... The Brogue Invite all their tourism partners to celebrate the ‘Arrival of Summer‘ Tralee won the title of being Ireland’s Best Tourism Town in 2015. At the heart of that proud achievement is Kirby’s Brogue Inn. The warmth of the hospitality of the owners, Fiona Kirby and Kevin Cotter and the entire staff will be evident to all their tourism partners in tourism guests at next Tuesday night’s annual Hospitality event on Tuesday night, June 12th ..

No other establishment offers the warmth of welcome to

visitors from all over the world who have travelled to enjoy an Irish Coffee, friendly pint or delicious food in unique surroundings.

The Brogue has long been regarded as the go-to pub/ restaurant for a true taste of Kerry. Kirby’s Brogue Inn has been a landmark on Rock Street since 1977 when the late Bill Kirby and his wife Mary established the business on The Street of Champions - so called because of the number of All-Ireland medals won by players from the local Austin Stacks GAA Club. Says Fiona” We’re Number One on TripAdvisor, we’re famous for our food – sourced locally - and we pride ourselves in the quality we offer from morning to

night, seven days a week. The Brogue serves late every Saturday, while we look forward to entertaining you nightly in a comfortable setting. If you’re mad for

trad, we have only the best Traditional Irish Music in the bar and most established local contemporary and rock talent perform live in Kirby’s Brogue Inn.“

Big weekend of Art and Cocktails at Roundys Our favourite cocktail bar Roundys has a big weekend ahead . Calum Threipland of Chelsea drug store and European bartender school will be doing a guest bartender gig on Friday . Calum will be showcasing his Tito vodka and 6 o’ clock gin original creations On Saturday night local superstar artist Damien Slattery will be launching his pop up “The last head” show. Award winning artist Damien is planning on moving in a new direction with his work so this will be the last portraits in this style. All the paintings will be available to buy on the night . Sounds like a great way to beat the post bank holiday blues !!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Tralee VTOS Opens New Doors “Almost 10 years ago l found myself unemployed and

as l had left school at thirteen l got the opportunity to return to education with Tralee VTOS. This was a fulltime two year course. While I enjoyed the course there were tough days where l thought l wouldn’t complete certain aspects but the support and guidance of the teachers and colleagues helped me achieve my goal. Now that my QQI certification is complete, I have achieved my personal goal of completing my second level education. I am now in employment that I enjoy. On a personal and professional level VTOS has opened new doors and new possibilities for my future.” By Mary O’Flaherty

Gael Champa is back this year in Tralee! A summer camp aimed at children in primary school, the camp was founded

in 2008 and is coordinated by fully qualified teachers Aoife O’ Donoghue and Aoileann de hora. The main objective of the camp is to foster positive attitudes among children towards the Irish language. The camp offers a range of sports and other activities such as art, drama, music and dance. There is also a weekly trip to the Aqua Dome! Aoife O’ Donoghue says “ our camp is very informal. We don’t do formal classes, we prefer teaching the Irish language through fun and games. The children learn without even realising they are picking up a cúpla focal! “ The camp runs from the 2nd and 9th of July Monday to Friday, from 9am to 2pm.For more information please call 0861942921 Or visit www.gaelchampa.IE.

Summers Here ....Time To Party In The Brogue With Chris Shortt’s “Solid Gold Night

“After a great response to the previous Solid Gold night ...this Sat night June 9th , its going to happen again !! Yes , the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “Solid Gold session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .”

According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 60’s 70’ 80’s & 90’s and what a way to kick off the summer !! ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with that music , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into the older Music.... we are talking Beatles , Bee Gees , The Rolling Stones , Wings , Pink Floyd , The Monkees Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba, the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac . and who could forget the 90’s ...Steps , The Cranberries, Backstreet Boys , Green Day ...so many songs to play ! Chris really knows his music , he has been the Rose Ball DJ for many many years now “ says Kevin Cotter .from the Brogue ..”.it only makes sense to have someone who knows the great music of the past , as well as Chris does , entertaining our customers rather than having someone working from a Playlist !” So remember this Sat June 9th is “Solid Gold Night with Chris Shortt in the Brogue 14

Corkmen AND Farmers dominate list of Rose Escorts for 2018 Rose of Tralee Festival ELEVEN is clearly the magic number for land custodians and Corkmen this year with 11 of each making the cut to be among the 58 men chosen to be Rose Escorts at the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The annual Rose of Tralee Rose Escort Boot Camp took place along the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry over the Bank Holiday Weekend resulting in 58 men being shortlisted to accompany the Roses in Tralee at this year’s Festival from 17th to 21st August. The lads, who already came through an interview process at the Glen Royal Hotel in Maynooth in April, had to pass a number of endurance tests and team-building exercises before they could graduate as fully-fledged Rose Escorts. Cork has the highest representation with 11 Rose Escorts, followed by Kerry, Dublin and Limerick with four each while one young gentleman will travel from Washington D.C. to be a part of the fun in Tralee. Apart from the farmers in the camp, a wide range of professions have featured among the profiles of this year’s 58 Rose Escorts with two doctors, five teachers, a nurse, distiller and forester to name a few. The Rose of Tralee International Festival’s Communications Manager, John Drummey, said: “The Rose Escorts spent three days 16

in Kerry where they undertook a number of gruelling, yet fun, tasks to prepare them for the festival in August. The Boot Camp weekend in the Kingdom is a team-building exercise that is also designed to help them cope with the demands of a busy week in Tralee. We are particularly grateful to our friends in Kerry County Council for putting together such a packed programme of activities throughout the magnificent Kingdom of Kerry.” The lads, all aged 21 to 30, had to carry out a range activities including a hike over Mount Brandon - Ireland’s second highest mountain - cliff diving, water-skiing, cookery, swimming, kayaking, surfing, ironing and sewing in order to prove they will have the stamina to be a Rose Escort. This year’s Rose Escort Boot Camp activities were supported by Kerry County Council and Kerry Civil Defence, under Civil Defence Officer Tom Brosnan and Kerry Fire Service, who played a major role in the transport and logistics of the event. Over the course of the weekend, the Rose Escorts experienced the visitor facilities in Castlegregory, Ballyheigue, Banna Strand, Dingle, Kerry Head, Tralee. Looking ahead to the year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival, one of the 58 lads will be selected as the Rose Friday 8th June 2018

announced as the Rose Escort of the Year.”

The 2017 Escort of the Year, Thomas Lynch from Castleisland, Co Kerry, said: “Being from Kerry, I was always a huge fan of the Festival. I grew up watching the parades, going to the Town Park and enjoying the selections on TV, so when a friend of mine suggested I sign up to be Rose Escort, it was really a no-brainer. It’s such a fantastic week with so much packed in it’s hard to choose highlights. There are three key moments that stick out: 1) Seeing my Rose’s awe at the huge crowd at the Saturday parade; 2) Sitting on the float with [Rose of Tralee] Jenny at the Midnight Madness Parade; and 3) Seeing how happy my mother was when I was

The 2018 Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from 17th to 21st August when a full line-up of FREE family-fun entertainment is planned for the streets of Tralee with The High Kings, Jake Carter, Sean and Conor Price, Hermitage Green, Oasis Tribute Band, Neil Diamond Tribute Act and Rolling Stones Tribute Band. The Dome will play host to the Rose Ball, OktoberFest, Fashion Show and televised selections presented by Dáithí Ó Sé. Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK!

It’s no secret I love makeup. I love full glam, lashes, highlight that you can see from space and eyeshadow blended to perfection. A few weeks ago I shared my current skincare Favourites, but this week I’m just going to give a few general tips on how to look after your skin better! . I always cleanse my skin twice a day with my Clarisonic and make sure my skin is completely clean going to bed but I still feel sometimes my skin needs a break.

1. STILL CLEANSE

Even when you’re not wearing makeup, you still need to cleanse tone and moisturise your skin every morning and night. There is dirt everywhere and that dirt will build up on your skin if you don’t clean it.

2. WATER WATER WATER

Staying hydrated is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your skin. You could use the most expensive products in the world but if you’re not drinking enough water your skin will look dull and dehydrated.

3. FACEMASK IT UP

There’s no better feeling than my skin after a facemask. Although I would like to say I do one once a week, I don’t. When choosing a facemask, make sure to choose one that will suit your skin type. If you have dry skin, choose a hydrating mask such as the Glam Glow Thirstymud. If you have acne prone skin, choose a clarifying mask such as the Origins Clear Improvement Mask. If you want luminous skin choose the Lancôme Advanced Genifique mask. My tried and trusted facemask brands include, GlamGlow, Lancôme, Clarins, Trilogy and Origins, yes there are no “drugstore” brands in there simply because in my line of work we’re taught to take good care of our skin so I feel you get what you pay for in most cases. Not saying I spend a fortune on skincare but I definitely spend that bit extra. Obviously some of the cheaper priced brands are decent, but just make sure to do a bit of research before using them. Your skin will thank you.

4. GET A FACIAL

If you’ve never had a facial and are looking to treat yourself, I would highly recommend it. Also if you have no idea about products or what skin type you have it’s great to get a facial as the person doing it will tell you everything you need to know about your skin.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! This week I finally joined a gym over here in Australia! Eventually. I’ve been doing home workouts and things but no gym workouts I had my first session back yesterday and I trained legs and now have the most INSANE DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness). As in my legs are killlllllling me. But I’m delighted to be back in the gym. I went yesterday and today at 6am before work, the gym is literally a 2 minute walk from my house. So handy! Food wise I have been making better choices, which wouldn’t be hard but still. I’ve been absolutely living for pancakes don’t ask why. So I thought I’d share my fool proof recipie for both training and non training days. Just because you are working out and watching what you eat doesn’t mean you can’t have yummy pancakes!

Here are two separate recipes that I like to use, one is higher carb for training days, and the other is higher in fat and protein for non training days, both are delicious! Although I do prefer the training day ones better cause they’re fluffier.

TRAINING DAY PANCAKES: serves one. • • • • •

40g oats 1 egg 50g egg whites Vanilla extract Almond milk - 1 or 2 tbsp as needed.

Blend the oats into a powder consistency in a nutri bullet or something similar. Add all the other ingredients and mix well. Cook as normal using extra virgin olive oil.

NON TRAINING DAY PANCAKES: • • • •

MY FAVOURITE TOPPINGS:

100g egg whites 1 large egg 20g protein powder 2 tsp chia seeds

Bacon medallions/turkey rashers & myprotein syrup. 25grams of Nutella and strawberries.

Blend all of the ingredients in a blender. Cook as normal in extra virgin olive oil - or any oil you prefer. Of course you can eat the training day pancakes on a non training day too! It all depends on your macros, if you track them. Enjoy & never feel guilty about food! 22

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... IT Tralee secures €1.2 million for more courses The Institute of Technology Tralee has secured over €1.2 million in funding and 346 places under the Government’s Springboard+ initiative for the academic year 2018/2019. In total 13 courses are offered by IT Tralee through its Life Long Learning Department, as part of its Springboard+ offering, with 11 of these programmes starting this September. Courses will be delivered in the areas of Science & Data Analytics, Food & Beverage Operations, Hotel Management, Building Information Modelling, Digital Marketing, Validation, Biopharmaceutical Processing, Industrial Instrumentation and Automation, Mechatronics, Quality Management, Culinary Skills, Restaurant Operations and Applied Computing. Commenting on the announcement, Brid McElligott, Vice President for Development, Research and External Engagement at IT Tralee, said: “Springboard+ offers an excellent opportunity to upskill in an area where there

are immediate employment positions. For the past decade, IT Tralee has worked with over 1,800 Springboard students, linking course participants with employers throughout the region resulting in many Springboard graduates now pursuing rewarding and challenging careers.” The Springboard+ initiative offers free, part-time courses leading to qualifications that are in demand among employers. Ann Marie O Flaherty, who completed the Springboard+ Higher Diploma in Science in Applied Computing at IT Tralee in 2017 said of her experience, “The course gave me the extra skills I required to become a Business Analyst. I would highly recommend a Springboard+ course to anyone wishing to gain education and experience in their preferred field”. Now in its eight year, Springboard+ has to date provided 47,000 free higher education places nationally, primarily to jobseekers in need of upskilling or reskilling to allow them to re-enter the

labour market. From last year, the eligibility criteria for Springboard+ was expanded to include homemakers and those in employment who wished to upskill or reskill to meet specific emerging skills needs in the ICT and Biopharma/Med Tech sectors. This year, for the first time, Springboard+ courses will be extended so that all courses will now be open to people irrespective of their employment status.

Members of the Lifelong Learning Department at IT Tralee will be available over the coming weeks to meet on an individual or group basis to advise potential students looking at a return to education. Further information on course availability, eligibility criteria and the application process are also available by contacting the Institute at 066 7191701 or by visiting www. springboardcourses.ie.

Council Launches Month-Long Anti-Dog Fouling Campaign ‘Sure, what’s the problem? It’s only natural,’ was the response given by a dog owner who was challenged by a Kerry County Council litter warden recently when confronted about leaving dog-foul on the footpath. A new month-long campaign on dog fouling which has been launched by the local authority and aims to change attitudes and reduce the amount of dog foul across the county. Dog foul is unsightly, unpleasant for those who encounter it and is a major concern for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users. For wheelchair users and the visually impaired it can take up to two hours to clean up the mess after coming in contact with dog foul. Further problems include a serious risk to children exposed to worms in dog foul leading to toxicariasis which in turn can 26

TRALEE ADVERTISER

cause blindness. Pedestrians slipping in dog foul have also suffered injuries. George Dineen who is a member of Tralee Access Group operates a mechanical wheelchair. As George explains: ‘Sometimes it is impossible to avoid the dog foul if the path is narrow and I have to drive straight through it. It can be very embarrassing for me if I am in a shop afterwards and there is a horrible smell. I worry then if I have carried the dog foul into the shop on my wheels.’ Invariably the carer must clean the wheels and clean and vent out the smell from the vehicle they were travelling in after they get home. The new campaign highlights the responsibilities that dog owners have in relation to the collection of all dog foul in public areas. Through local media and social media, dog owners will be encouraged Friday 8th June 2018

to clean up after their dogs and will be reminded that onthe-spot fines are applicable where an offence occurs. A fine of €150 can be applied by a litter warden in such a case. Pictured in Tralee’s Town Park in Tralee were Liz O’Donnell KCC , Oonagh O’Connor KCC , John Breen Dir of Services

Great response to St Pats Dingle Way Challenge KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: IRISH PASSPORT CARD Question I am 18 and flying to Spain for a holiday this summer. Can I use a passport card when travelling to Spain, and how do I apply for one? Andrew Conway,Julie Behan and Liam Poff who took part in the St Pats GAA Club,Blennerville Dingle Way Challenge on Sunday

Answer The Irish passport card is a credit-card sized Irish passport. You can use it for travel within the European Union, the European Economic Area (which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland. So, you will be able to use it when going to Spain this summer. You must be aged 18 or over to apply for a passport card. You must also hold a valid Irish passport that is not due to expire in the next 3 months. The personal details you provide when applying must be exactly the same as those on your passport book. The passport card is valid for a maximum of 5 years or until your passport book expires, whichever period is shorter.

James and Lara Costello and Eamonn Sayers walking in the St Pats GAA Club Blennerville Dingle Way Challenge on Sunday

If you plan to use your passport card when travelling, you must use the passport card number when checking in online. The passport card costs €35. If you are applying from outside Ireland, there is an additional delivery cost of €5. You can apply for a passport card online on dfa.ie. When making the application you need: • Your current passport book • Your digital photograph (see the detailed guidelines on dfa.ie) • A valid email address • A debit card or credit card

IT’S ONLY A JOKE LITTLE JOHNNY

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, “Everyone who thinks they’re stupid, stand up!” After a few seconds, Little Johnny stood up. The teacher said, “Do you think you’re stupid, Little Johnny?” “No, ma’am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!”

WHAT’S A MAN CAVE?”

My wife saw a beer sign in a garage we passed and said it must be a man cave. My 5-year-old daughter asked, “What’s a man cave?” Wife explained and daughter asked, “What about a girl cave?” I immediately responded, “It’s called a kitchen, dear.” Wife proceeded to beat the crap outta me !!!

A WOMAN WENT TO A PET SHOP..

and immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot.. There was a sign on the cage that said €50.00. “Why so little,” she asked the pet store owner. The owner looked at her and said, “Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of ill-Repute and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.” The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird any way. She took it home and hung the bird’s cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something. The bird looked around the room, then said.. “New house, new madam.” The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought “that’s really not so bad.” When her 2 teenage daughters returned from school the bird saw and said, “New house, new madam, new girls.” The girls and the woman were a bit offended but then began to laugh about the situation considering how and where the parrot had been raised. Moments later, the woman’s husband Keith came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, “Hi, Keith!”

A MAN BUYS A LADA (RUSSIAN CAR)...

A man sitting at a bar looks up to notice a beautiful woman across the bar. Just as he notices her, her glass eye falls out and rolls toward him. He snatches it before it falls to the floor. Upon returning her glass eye to her, they get to talking and the man ends up taking her home. In the morning, after a night of romance , the man asks if she goes home with a lot of guys. “No, you just caught my eye.”

WHY DO SCUBA-DIVERS FALL BACKWARDS OFF THE BOAT? Because if they fell forwards they’d fall back into the boat.

Fenit RNLI Lifeboat respond to Five call outs in One week Fenit RNLI lifeboat volunteer crews responded very quickly to a number of calls received from people experiencing difficulties while using the sea this week. The calls included assisting a person requiring medical assistance, a person getting into difficulty while swimming and assisting with a sailing vessel which experienced mechanical problems. The all weather lifeboat was launched on two occasions with a full crew attending the scene near Ballydavid in West Kerry. The seafarer and vessel were brought to a local pier. The inshore life boat was used to attend a swimmer who got into difficulty at a local beach in Fenit. In another call out this week a medical emergency arose close to another beach in Fenit. On that occasion Fenit RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched and arrived at the scene very quickly. The RNLI tasked Shannon Coast Guard to assist due to the nature of the call. Upon safe arrival back on shore an ambulance was waiting 32

on Fenit Pier to give medical attention to the person. Fenit RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, Gerard O’Donnell said that the volunteer crew had experienced a busy week and were very pleased and relieved that all call outs had resulted in good outcomes. The good spell of weather had Friday 8th June 2018

naturally increased the number of people using the beaches and surrounding coastline. He added ‘Fenit RNLI encourages all sea users to be extra vigilant while using the sea’. Furthermore he added that ‘people should never be embarrassed or afraid to call the RNLI or Coast Guard if there is a concern that anyone

is in danger at sea’. If, at any time you see someone in trouble in the water or need assistance at sea, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

TORQUING CARS! NEW RESEARCH CLAIMS SOME HYBRIDS DON’T NEARLY MATCH THEIR ADVERTISED FUEL CONSUMPTION

1’Figures claim some hybrids return a mere one-third of advertised economy’ Some hybrids have come under some scrutiny this week after research claimed that most don’t nearly match their advertised fuel consumption. It has to be said that some seem to fare well but others, judging by the figures, are well off the mark. The findings, by HonestJohn.co.uk research, are based on 148,000 fuel reports by Real MPG UK. The results are bound to be disputed by the relevant marques - especially those who fare badly. The figures claim some hybrids return a mere one-third of advertised economy, with plug-ins out by as much as 80mpg. The analysis particularly points the finger at Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen. After the consumer-led motoring website analysed the mpg reports, it said the Mercedes C-Class C350e managed just 36.9pc of its official fuel economy, with the BMW 3 Series 330e and Volkswagen Golf GTE second and third worst on 37.2pc and 38.1pc. The study says a typical hybrid car in the UK will return on average 70pc of its advertised mpg. On the plus side, it found the Lexus GS 450h to be the best hybrid for real mpg (84.2pc of claimed return). It put the Toyota RAV4 hybrid 2WD in second place (79.3pc) and that was followed closely by the Toyota Yaris 1.5 VVT-i hybrid (77.9pc).(indo motoring )

MY SON IS LOOKING FOR A RELIABLE CAR AS A STARTER BUYER’

My son is looking for a reliable car as a starter buyer. He likes the Audi A1 and has a budget of €10k. Would this get him a 2012 model with perhaps 50k to 80k miles on the clock? He was looking at importing one from the UK. However, the taxes at 33pc are high. Perhaps the VW Golf would be a likely alternative? Aidan: I don’t know where you are getting a 33pc tax liability but, regardless, the Audi A1 is not easily or cost-effectively imported because they hold strong residuals in the UK.The same is true of their values here so they make excellent used cars. It’s a nice, tidy machine and it looks the part. However, his budget will go a lot further in a Mazda2, which should translate into getting something with low mileage. Tell him to look for a Sensu model. It’s ultra-reliable, still very fresh looking, has excellent specification and shouldn’t give him any trouble. (indo motoring)

FESTIVAL OF THE UNEXCEPTIONAL 2018: EVERYDAY CLASSICS ON SHOW

The annual Festival of the Unexceptional, known for showcasing some of the best mundane cars ever built, returns for its fifth anniversary year at Stowe House, near Silverstone Circuit, on July 14. The unique Concours de l’Ordinaire festival is returning with six automotive aficionados, including television presenters Edd China and Jon Bentley, classic car journalists Danny Hopkins and Sam Skelton, and motoring marque experts and historians Tanya Field and Gary Axon. These experts will be tasked with choosing between 45 cars that used to be commonplace but have now almost disappeared. A further five vehicles will be plucked from the visitors’ car park on the day, to join the chosen 45 on the Stowe display lawn. Some of the entrants this year include a Fiat Strada, Volkswagen Golf L, Datsun Bluebird and Mercedes-Benz 190.To mark the fifth anniversary of the festival, winners from previous years will return these include a Nissan Cherry Europe, Morris Marina pick-up, Hillman Avenger Super Estate, plus an as-new 1983 Datsun Sunny. Classic cars from manufacturers will also be attending and are set to include a 1967 Toyota Corona, 1971 Vauxhall Viscount PD and a 1975 Mitsubishi Colt Galant. Angus Forsyth, managing director of Hagerty, which sponsors the event, said: “There is no shortage in the UK of car shows and Concours d’Elégance that showcase the best examples of some of the best cars ever. While Aston Martin DB5s and RollsRoyce Silver Ghosts can be rather common at these events, just try spotting an Austin Montego or a Morris Marina on the show field. For that matter, you won’t even find them in the car park.” The light-hearted ‘Hagerty Feast of the Unexceptional’ will return with participants encouraged to bring out the Battenberg cake, Curly Wurly bars, cheese and pineapple on sticks and, of course, the obligatory bottle of Babycham. 38

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR IT’S KENNEDY CUP TIME AGAIN: It is amazing how quick annual events come around every year. It seems like only a few months ago I was reporting on last year’s Subway SFAI Kennedy Cup. Now it is all about to begin again on June 11th. What is the Kennedy Cup: The Kennedy Cup is one of Europe’s most prestigious underage soccer competitions where the 32 Leagues in the 26 counties bring their elite u14 squads to UL in Limerick for a week of competition. That’s 640 players plus coaches, back room staff and for some Leagues their own chef’s! For the Kerry players we are lucky that we always have parents willing to help with the mid-day meals. The Leagues plays 6 games in 5 days with the Tuesday the big day as there are two group games that day. While the managers prepare their players for this it is hard in advance to know how they react in the heat of the tournament and with the pressure of a huge crowd watching all the games. The Winners: The tournament has long been dominated by the DDSL – the Dublin and District Schoolboys League which has over 25,000 registered players so as you would expect they start each Kennedy Cup as favourites. Since the turn of the century they have only failed to win the Kennedy Cup in 4 years – 2000- Limerick and District Schoolboys League, 2003 – Waterford Schoolboys League, 2011- North Dublin Schoolboys League and on that never-to-beforgotten day in 2015 the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League. Indeed we are the only League outside of those based in cities to win the Kennedy Cup. A sign of the talent of that squad in 2015 is that they are now backboning the Kerry minor (u17) team and while that’s hard to see from

a soccer point of view it is great to watch these players continues to impress in their sporting careers. This Year’s Games: The Kennedy Cup operates on a grading system where your finishing position over the past three years determines where you are seeded. Kerry are seeded at number 1 and didn’t have long to wait at the draw to see what group they were in. Kerry were first out of the hat and into Group 1. The Group is completed by Cavan / Monaghan, Mayo and Roscommon. This means that our boys will kick-off on Monday at 4.30 versus Roscommon and then on Tuesday it’s an early start with a 10.30 kick-off against Mayo followed by a 4.30 game with Cavan / Monaghan. With work going on in UL this year it will be an unusual Kennedy Cup with the Group games being split between the grass and All Weather pitches. Following the group games the tournament splits into the Cup, Bowl, Shield and Trophy competitions. Should Kerry win their Group they will play the winners of Group 2 – expected to be Limerick Desmond. But the management team of Joe O’Reilly from Tralee, Jimmy Clancy and Robert Sibanda would not be happy if I speculated further as to the permutations! The 2018 Kennedy Cup Squad: With over 80 players starting out with the Kerry Schoolboys Girls Leagues ETP’s it is a credit to the 20 that make it to each seasons Kennedy Cup squad. The final cut from around 25 or 26 players is one of the hardest and worst tasks the management has to do. But as always they are happy with the 20 they have selected. As expected this year St Brendan’s Park provide the most players as they have had a great year reaching the semi-final of the National Cup. They have 9 players with the only team in Kerry to really challenge them – Killorglin having 4 players. Killarney Athletic,

If you can’t make to Limerick the League will be providing a full suite of media coverage while our first game against Roscommon is one of those that is pencilled in for live screening by local company Full Time Productions that is working with the SFAI. TRACK READY FOR ITS BIGGEST NIGHT: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is one of the biggest nights of the year with the Kerry GAA fundraiser featuring the final of the Kerry GAA supporters club Race of Champions, the Kerry Group club Championship final and a host of other top class finals and a chance to meet all the Kerry team after their fantastic win on Sunday. There will also be a best dressed lady competition sponsored by Jasmine Boutique, judged by the 2018 Kerry Rose Celine o Shea, face painting, bouncy castle and top class raffle prizes and music after racing. There are also two race meetings on Saturday with SIS 8 race program off at 2.12 and Saturday night card commences at 7.44pm. The track is currently taking entries for the Kerry Group Hospital stake for current A2 greyhounds over 525 yards to start on Friday June 23rd. The Irish teams have been announced for the FIBA 3X3 Europe Cup qualifiers with the men’s team in Constanta, Romania from June 30th to July 1st. It was a special announcement for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors with 2 of the four players being associated with the club. Current star Eoin Quigley is joined by ex- player Ryan Leonard who has been playing in the States with Lawerencville School New Jersey. The other

WILL TRALEE HAVE JUNIOR NBA LINK-UP? The NBA and Basketball Ireland have launched the Junior NBA Basketball Ireland League for Boys and Girls aged 11 and 12. 10 League clubs will link up with three local primary schools to create 30 teams. Each team will represent an NBA team and will receive corresponding NBA teambranded uniforms for their games. This is part of the Junior NBA’s global youth basketball programme and would be great to see Tralee schools involved. Maybe Garvey’s and some local schools could apply? TRALEE CELTIC – THE CLUB THAT SET THE STANDARDS: Tonight Friday night in the Grand Hotel the Celtic basketball team, that was an amalgamation of the Tannery club and St John’s Pipe band who had a host of players in their ranks, will be remembered for being the forerunners to the Tigers and Warriors. KILLARNEY RIDERS DOMINATED ROAD RACE ROUND 2: Killarney Cycling Club hosted Round 2 of the Clubs of Kerry Road Race League and their riders dominated proceedings. It was a perfect evening for the races held on their regular circuit at Churchtown in Beaufort. In the senior race John Brosnan showed he had plenty left in his lags after the Ras Tailteann as he dominated this race. Once the A1 riders caught the A2 and A3 riders who were off first Brosnan went clear and was not going to be caught. He was a clear winner and took the 10 points on offer in the 6 round Road Race League. Conor Kissane, also of Killarney CC followed up his win in the first round with a second place here as he bids to defend his title. Tralee Manor West riders David Fitzgerald and Kieran Coggins took 3rd and 5th with Kilarney’s Leigh Hewerdine crossing the line in 4th. In the underage races Callum Steadman, Killarney CC, took the u12’s win from unattached rider Nuala Moloney with the three Killarney CC riders filling the rest of the top five places – Danny Falvey, Tadgh Kissane O’Sullivan and Shayna Daly. Killarney riders took the top three places in the u14 race with Shane Galvin home first ahead of Adam Lenihan and Louis Steadman. Shauna Finn from Newcastlewest CC was 4th and Dinny Murphy Sliabh Luachra in 5th. And in the u16’s race Patrick Galvin could not be caught as he took the win from Stefan Caulfield Drier and their fellow Killarney CC club mates Ethan Slattery in 3rd and Lorcan Daly in 4th. Ben Murphy from Sliabh Luachra was 5th across the line. This week it was Round 2 of the Time Trial League and we will have a report on this next week.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER MOUNTHAWK ATHLETE’S BLAST OVER THE 100 METRES: Tullamore was the venue for the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships and it was a day to remember for a number of Tralee athletes. The highlight was the new record by the Mercy Mounthawk relay team. Just before the relay final Cillian Griffin took bronze in the 100m in a race where the timing had to go down to 1/1000 of a second to separate the top three. He then lined-up with Melvyn Shalemba, Luke O’Carroll and Basit Oyebanji to clock a time of 43.19 for a new national record. Other highlights included Shalemba’s bronze in the Intermediate Boys 200m and the Mercy Mounthawk senior girls 4 x 300m relay team of Ciara McCarthy, Rachel Bowler, Orla O’Reilly and Diana Nagle who won bronze. Dara Lowth running for Tralee CBS was 6th in the Senior Boys 400m with Darragh Courtney of Mounthawk 3rd in the High Jump. In Ennis there was also great success for the younger athletes with the u9’s to u13’s in the Munster Juvenile championships. Tralee Harriers had a number of successes including Sean Murphy taking gold in the u10 Boys Turbo Javelin, Fionan Ryan winning silver in the same event at u12’s, Stephen Hurley getting silver in the u9 boys long jump and Laura Falvey winning bronze in the u11 girls 60m.

The Joe Flynn Memorial Award for Player of the Year was presented to while took the Most Improved Player of the Year Award. The Awards were presented by Joanne Flynn who was representing the Flynn family. There were presentations to a number of present and past Dynamos players with Andy Rogers being honoured for his participation with the Irish u14 Development Squad and also having been named captain of this year’s Kennedy Cup squad. Alex Hoare was also presented with an award as he is now part of the Ireland u13 Development Squad. Also honoured were former players Leo Gaxha, Sean Kennedy and Rian O’Sullivan have all represented the club in the green of Ireland this year while Paul White broke the long standing clean sheet record with his club Kettering. It stood at 18 since 1978 but Paul did not let in a goal for 20 successive games. The other player to get an award was Cian Kennedy who is now staring in college’s soccer in the US with the University of San Diego. Club officer Noel White said it was a proud day for the club. “ It is great to see some of our former players doing so well while our present players are also making big names for themselves. It is also very important to keep that connection with the Flynn family as Joe is fondly remembered by all at Tralee Dynamos.”

CILLIAN FASTEST IN ROUND 1SWIM: The opening round of the Tralee Bay Swimming Club’s World Swim Series saw Cillain Tierney taking the fastest time. The top three in Group A were Diarmuid O’Sullivan, Cillian Tierney and James Slade. In Group B the top three were David Ryall, Frank Ryan and Kieran Browne while in Group C the top three were Caroline Murphy, Morna O’Halloran and Catherine Doolan. The next race will take place on Thursday June 14th and is for the Paddy O’Sullivan Cup with WaterWorld Tralee as the sponsor.

PARK AWARDS: St Brendan’s Park had another very successful year and a huge crowd headed to the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium for their Awards night. Handled with aplomb by Colm McLoughlin this was a big night for all those in the club from the Academy up. Both Tralee Dynamos and The Park also took time out to wish the Kennedy Cup squad and management all the best as they head to UL this Monday.

KERRY FIRSTS WIN: The weather at the weekend certainly suited the game of cricket and it was a good day for the Kerry Firsts at the Oyster Oval although rain came later which reduced the total that opponents Limerick had to chase. Kerry hit 279 from their 44 overs with Limerick being set a total of 267. However Kerry had them all out for 229 in 40.2 overs. In the all Kerry Munster Minor Cup derby at the same venue Kerry CCC’s 3rd squad defeated North Kerry to progress to the semi-final where they will face the winners of UCC and Lismore. Kerry did lose in the semi-final of the Munster T20 Senior Blast going down to Limerick who then lost the final to Cork. This was the second year in a row that Kerry lost out at the last 4 stage. DELIGHTFUL DAY FOR DYNAMOS: Tralee Dynamos underage section certainly enjoyed their Bank Holiday Saturday. In the afternoon their u13’s won the John Joe Naughton Memorial Shield. Before that at their grounds at Cahermoneen they held their third annual Joe Flynn u12 Awards.

CHANGING TIMES IN TRALEE SOCCER: While Tralee Celtic eventually defeated Mitchels Avenue in the Denny Premier B League Final replay on penalties it has been a memorable season for both clubs. The game went all the way to penalties with Celtic winning 5-4 after Gary Kissane saved the vital penalty. If Tralee Celtic had not won this game they would have spent the summer wondering how. Chris Hegarty made three great saves in the last few minutes to keep Avenue in the game and then in extra time made another stunning save when a Fergal Moynihan deflected shot looked to be heading for the net. Hegarty certainly deserves to be showing off his skills in the Premier A next season as Mitchels Avenue are promoted. Tralee Celtic will certainly enjoy the summer after the club that FAI CEO John Delaney played with completed a remarkable rise. This is their fifth consecutive League title which is an amazing achievement. They will certainly add to the Premier A next season. However they will need a new manager as Gary Moriarty is stepping down.

With these two Tralee sides now in Premier A it is certainly changing times in the town as Tralee Dynamos and The Park are now playing their soccer outside of the top division. One can debate if this is a good or a bad thing as to be fair to both Dynamos and The Park their have a club structure all the way down to Academy level. However both Tralee Celtic and Mitchels Avenue have earned the right to take on the rest of the top flight clubs. It will be interesting to see this time next year where they will be in the League. Before we leave Tralee soccer we must mention the win in the Denny Division 2A League final replay by Classic B. They defeated Killorglin B 3-2. Classic B had a mix of youth and experience with the experience coming from the likes of Tommy Naughton and Timmy Lynch! PITCH AND PUTT NEWS: Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor had a very good weekend at the National Matchplay Championships in Tullamore. She reached the semifinal defeating former National Ladies Strokeplay champion Sarah O’Neill and Nenagh’s Catherine Dunne. She was only defeated on the last hole by the host club’s Annie Galvin in the Last 4. Jamie Blake lost out to Aongus Coughlan in his second round game. This weekend sees the County Strokeplay Championships take place in Listowel with the Bob Casey Memorial Inter-Club Strokeplay concluding next Tuesday night, June 12th in Castleisland. TRIPLE ACHIEVED: The triple that Kerry GAA fans were hoping for was achieved last weekend. The Seniors made a hugely positive start to the Championship hitting 32 points in a 22 point win over Clare. Many had said this was going to be a close affair with Kerry having 7 debutants on duty. But on Sunday they certainly laid down a marker for the rest of the year starting on June 23rd in the Munster Final away to Cork. The Kerry hurlers enjoyed a vital 2 point win over Meath in the Joe McDonagh Cup. This sees them with two wins from 4 games and they take on Antrim in their last game away this Saturday. A win will see them third as their loss to Carlow will mean that even if the sides finish level Carlow will take that second spot. The Kerry Ladies cruised into their Munster Final as they saw off Waterford 2-16 to 1-06. Once again they will take on Cork in the decider. CLUB BRIEFS: PARNELL’S: The Club had a number of players in action with Kerry in the inter county Camogie blitz taking on Cork, Galway, Waterford and Clare. The u14 Boys lost out in their County League semi-final to St Brendan’s. The club wishes all the best to South Kerry GDA who is moving to do the same job in Limerick. The u11’s made a good start with two wins to the North Kerry League. Well done to all those players who are heading to the Camogie Feile being hosted in Connacht.

travel to Na Gaeil this Sunday at 2pm in Round 6 of the Senior County League. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,8,10 and 23. In the u12 County League Team 1 went down to Milltown Castlemaine while team 3 defeated the same opposition. The u14 Girls defeated Listowel Emmets 4-8 to 2-2. ST PAT’S NEWS: Well done to all those who took part or helped in any way on the Dingle Way Challenge, one of the clubs most important fundraisers. There was no Juvenile Academy as many took part in the DWC. The u8’s were in a Blitz hosted by Churchill, the u12’s were unlucky not to get something for their game with Cromane while the u17’s lost out to Keel/Listry in the u17’s. The Seniors play Finuge and the B’s take on Dingle C in Round 3 of the County Junior League. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors take on Dr Crokes this Saturday night in the County League with two points separating the sides. The game is at 7.30pm while the B’s travel to Knocknagoshel on Sunday at 2pm and Charlie Kerins are in action tonight Friday night at home to Tarbert. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,9,11 and 18. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The u6’s to u10’s enjoyed their games in Killorglin and are in GO Games action this week. The club will host camps in early July in Connolly Park and in August at the same venue. The u12’s are in the middle of a busy period with games in Division 1A and 1B, the u15’s are in the Munster Super Touch Final in Mallow on June 16th while the u17’s were unlucky to lose out in the semi-final of their competition at Currans. Wednesday night football continues at Shannakil / Rathonane. ON THE GREENS: Congratulations to Mary Sheehy who won her first ever Senior Scratch Cup taking the Ballybunion Ladies Senior Scratch Cup- part of the clubs 125 year celebrations. Tralee and Kanturk will have played yesterday in the West Munster area final of the Pierce Purcell Shield. The winners qualify for the Munster semi-finals in Dundrum Co Tipperary on Sunday July 22nd. Tralee were in second leg Joe Carr Diamond Trophy action this week leading Killorglin 3-2. We will have the result next week. TOMMY CONROY RIP: Those of us who get to write about sport for a living are very privileged. One of those who blazed the way for many of us passed away this week. Tommy Conroy has left a huge body of work including his excellent book - Low Field and High Spirits. May the sod rest gently on his soul.
