LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES DOGGY LAW Ann and her husband have just moved into their new home with their young family but the next door neighbour’s dog is barking all day and keeping them up at night. Ann was wondering just what her options were. Well the first thing to do is have a friendly chat with the neighbour and inform them of the problem, excessive dog barking that causes a nuisance is an offence but you may be able to solve such problems by talking to the dog owner. It may be something simple like they are barking at a bell sound or chimes outside the front door. If you don’t get a satisfactory response, you may complain to the District Court and seek a hearing. When you have received a court date, you must inform the dog owner of your complaint by using the form prescribed for this purpose under Section 25 of the Control of Dogs Act 1986. These forms are available from the District Courts and from local authorities. The court may make an order requiring the occupier of the premises in which the dog is kept to abate the nuisance by exercising due control over a dog. The court may limit the number of dogs that can be kept on a premises or may direct that a dog be delivered to a dog warden to be dealt with. Dog waste is another big problem on our streets, Under the Litter Pollution Act 1997 it is an offence to allow a dog under your control to foul a public place, the owner must ensure that they clean up after their pets and dispose of it in a hygienic manner or an on the spot fine of €150 may be occurred. On the more serious end of the scale are bites from dogs, dogs including Bull Mastiff, Dobermann Pinscher, German shepherds and Rottweilers must be kept muzzled and on a short leash accompanied by an adult at all times in a public place.A dog owner is liable for injuries caused by their dog as a result of an attack by it. All dogs have to be microchipped since 31/3/2016 and details entered on a database. More on doggy law in the next article. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE FINALIST ANNOUNCED IN THE BIM SEAFOOD RETAIL BUSINESS AWARDS 2018 BIM is delighted to announce that eight finalists, one of whom is from County Kerry, have been shortlisted for the BIM Seafood Retail Business Award 2018 today (Wednesday 19th July 2017). BIM are specifically looking for retail managers that can demonstrate successful business models, excellent understanding of seafood, coupled with outstanding business and sales acumen. Dan O’ Regan from Garveys Supervalu in Tralee has been named as a finalist in the Supermarket Seafood Counter Category! Applications were invited for the inaugural Seafood Business Retail Awards under the two headings, Supermarket Seafood Counters and Independent Seafood Specialists. Four candidates from across Ireland have now been shortlisted in each category. The competition finals will take

place in September when each of the finalists will present to a panel of business experts including retail mentor James Burke, entrepreneur and businessman Bobby Kerr, financial advisor Moira Creedon, and Ronald Hovenars, a food business mentor from Holland, who brings an international element of insight into progressive seafood retailing. Speaking after the announcement of the finalists, Jim O’Toole, CEO, BIM said, “The objective of this competition is to identify the seafood business with the best seafood business skillset. The judges will be taking a critical look at management structures, future growth plans, sales and profit performance. In September the finalists will need to reflect to the judges how they have implemented what they have learned through their mentoring with the experts

in BIM for the benefit of the business, and how they plan to grow their businesses into the future. I wish them all the very best of luck”. The winners of the BIM Seafood Retail Business Award 2018 will receive a

prize package of business supports worth €15,000 including branding and promotional advice, PR training, business mentoring and support, helping to further develop their business into the future.

PURPLE FLAG JUDGES WILL VISIT TRALEE ON JULY 28TH!

JUDGES will visit Tralee later this month to consider if the town should be awarded the Purple Flag, an internationally recognised endorsement of a town centre’s ambience between the hours of 5pm and 5am. If successful in achieving the award it will signify that Tralee has a night time economy that is enjoyable, entertaining, diverse and safe and it will be viewed as yet another attribute for doing business in Tralee. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “Purple Flag destinations distinguish themselves by being vibrant and well-managed. In a team approach, the Garda, Kerry County Council, vintners and other representatives of the hospitality sector have been involved in a comprehensive application process which is being led by Tralee Chamber Alliance. We are encouraging all the night-time venue owners and their customers to work together to make sure that the Judges leave the town with only one option - to award 6

the Purple Flag to Tralee.” The Judges will tour the area within a circuit from The Rose Hotel to Tralee Bay Wetlands to North Circular Road and back to Fels Point, covering pubs, hotels and restaurants, Siamsa Tíre Theatre, KDYS and Tralee Town Park.

The official Judges’ tour of Tralee’s Purple Flag area will take place from 5pm on Friday 28th July to 5am on Saturday 29th July, however, it is not known if they will make an unsupervised visit of the area before or after that window. The Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley, said: “A vibrant Evening and Night Time Economy (ENTE) will further enhance the town centre of Tralee, helping to create a stimulating destination providing a safe, secure environment, with a broad choice and rich mix of entertainment and other activities. The pulling power will change throughout the evening, appealing to a range of age groups, including Friday 21st July 2017

families, and will be accessible to all, whilst protecting the quality of life for locals and the interests of other businesses.” Tralee is Ireland’s Best Large Tourism Town, a Gold Medal Winner in the European Entente Florale Competition and a five-time Gold Medal Winner in the Tidy Towns Competition.

minutes of the town centre and a Purple Flag would be the icing on the cake in the efforts to position Tralee as Ireland’s premier town in which to live, work and visit. The decision on whether Tralee has succeeded in being awarded the Purple Flag will be announced in November of this year.

SIAMSA TIRE, HOME TO THE NATIONAL FOLK THEATRE Every Monday –Friday 8.30pm FADÓ FADÓ National Folk Theatre of Ireland A whole year’s cycle of living and working the land is dramatised though lively singing, music and dance.

Description Short-term overexposure to sunlight can cause sunburn. The skin can become red, hot and painful. After a few days the burnt skin may peel. Excessive exposure to the sunlight over time can increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

Causes Sunburn is skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays. Everyone who is exposed to UV light is at risk of getting sunburn, and skin that burns rather than tans, pale skin or people that work outside have a higher risk of sunburn. Babies and young children are especially at risk of sunburn because of their delicate skin.

Signs and Symptoms few days, and will usually heal within a few days. Signs of severe sunburn can include the following: • Blistering or swelling of the skin • Chills • High temperature (fever) of 38°C or above • Dizziness • Headaches • Feeling sick (nauseous)

During warm, sunny weather adults and children of all ages should do the following: • Protect the skin with suitable clothing and stay in the shade where possible. • Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm: this is when the sun’s UV rays are most harmful.

• Apply a “high protection” sunscreen of at least SPF30 (SPF50 for children or people with pale skin) that protects against UV rays and reapply it regularly throughout the day. The higher the SPF factor the higher the protection against the sun. • Use water-resistant sunscreen if exercising or in contact with water.

• Wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers the face, neck and ears.

• Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.

• Wear sunglasses that protect against UV rays.

The following advice may help reduce the symptoms of sunburn until the skin heals. • Cool the skin by having a cold bath or shower, sponging it with cold water or

prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol as it will cause further dehydration. • Try to avoid sunlight by covering up the

affected areas of skin until the skin has fully healed. • Your Haven pharmacist can advise on appropriate aftersun products that can soothe and cool the skin whilst replacing the lost moisture. • If the sunburn is severe and the skin is blistered, speak to your Haven pharmacist as soon as possible and they can offer advice and solutions to help the skin heal.

There are a range of very effective over the counter remedies available from your Haven pharmacy to help prevent and treat sunburn. Please speak to one of our trained advisors or ask your Haven Pharmacist if you would like advice on which treatment is best suited to your needs.

REST AND RELAXATION We all crave a little R& R far from our busy lives to recharge the batteries and whether its weekend break or a two week vacation in the sun. However, for most of us it’s also the perfect excuse to throw our healthy routine out the window. Who doesn’t dream of being parked on a sun lounger, cocktail in hand, the only activity of raising your arm to order another round from the pool attendant. The problem is, over indulgence and under activity often mean we come back from holidays feeling like we need another holiday. Research sides with the theory that incorporating activity into

your get away actually makes you more relaxed, boosts your mood and gives you a better outlook even after you have returned home. A Dutch study found that people who are physically active during their holiday found they were in a better mood and had lower levels of tension and higher levels of energy then those who weren’t. High intensity stressful jobs can be hard to leave behind especially if you struggle with work life balance at the best of times. Have you ever felt that you never truly relaxed until the end of the week. Getting up and getting active especially when trying something new will distract you from wanting to check your phone and your e-mail. Being outdoors for a few minutes actually switches off the rumination centre of the brain. When we slow down, stop the busy work schedule

and take in the beautiful surroundings, not only are we restored but our mental performance improves also. Hang on to your post trip bliss: when you exercise in a new environment you have more fun in the moment which can improve the way you feel about activity going forward. A little activity could keep away a souvenir you don’t want, the extra pounds. You will also be more motivated to return to your class our gym routine if you are not starting from scratch or have lost the gains that you have already made. Try something totally different, surfing, diving, rock climbing, it will push you out of your

comfort zone and help you discover a new activity that you may love. It will also show you it’s never too late to “teach an old dog new tricks”! This is very empowering and it’s a feeling that will extend the other areas of your life. “Vacation is what you take when you can’t take what you’ve been taking any longer”

DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY? Heartwave Cardio Screening is coming to your area soon, with the revolutionary BPro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The BPro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a Healthstats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people e.g. Sports Clubs, Business Screening etc. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the BPro to the following venues during the month of July/August (for further information or to check other venues, please call 0864135555 or 0862566422): Tuesday 25th July - Brook Lane Hotel, Kenmare, Co Kerry Wednesday 26th July - Ashe Hotel, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry Thursday 27th July – Radisson Hotel, Ennis Road, Limerick Tuesday 1st August - Prince of Wales Hotel, Athlone, Co Westmeath Wednesday 2nd August - Radisson Hotel, Ennis Road, Limerick Tuesday 8th August - Corralea Court Hotel, Tuam, Co Galway Wednesday 9th August - Ashe Hotel, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry Thursday 10th August - Radisson Hotel, Ennis Road, Limerick Appointments are essential and are available from 11.00am until late. DENTAL BONDING

Are you unhappy with spaces between your teeth? Many people have unsightly dark spaces between otherwise healthy teeth but don’t know how to improve their appearance. We don’t believe in harming good teeth by drilling them down for crowns and veneers and all treatment provided is guided by our policy of minimal invasion. The Bioclear matrix technique allows us to painlessly and seamlessly blend tooth coloured material into your teeth to close unsightly gaps and restore an even, healthy smile WITHOUT removing any healthy tooth structure. This unique technique will not cause food traps or cleaning problems afterwards. The system is durable, reliable and delivers beautiful results for a fraction of the cost of crowns and veneers. Remember, once healthy tooth is drilled away, it can never be replaced so always consider the least invasive option for your smile makeover to ensure that you retain beautiful, healthy teeth for life.

Cerec - Digital dentistry Tooth conservation guides our treatment philosophy and our computer aided design scanners also allow us to repair badly broken down teeth using beautiful ceramic materials that replace what is lost, like the missing piece of a jigsaw, rather than drilling the whole tooth down as one would for a crown.

Root Canal

Where possible, extractions are avoided by carrying out contemporary root canal treatment and Dr. Susan van der Merwe uses the latest technology to deliver outstanding results…

“I have a passion for Root Canals. I find it rather disturbing when so many patients opt for an extraction opposed to a root canal treatment. Many patients seem to be misinformed regarding this treatment. Either they feel they have to seek specialist treatment elsewhere (and at an exorbitant cost) or they are completely ‘in the dark’ regarding the treatment procedure. Root canals seem to have a bad reputation in terms of pain and success rates. However clinical trials are now demonstrating that success rates can be as high as 95-99% if modern contemporary methods are used. At Bridge Place Dental we have up skilled to ensure a high standard of treatment is offered to our patients.

Dr Susan Van Der Merwe

All root canals are done using loops (magnification eye wear), rotary file systems and heated filling systems. As per a recent audit within our practice, we are achieving success rates equal to those in scientific journals.

Just like ‘key hole’ surgery has made advances to surgery and subsequent recovery, we have approached root canals in a similar manner.”

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! As you may or may not know, I’m moving back to Tralee to work more in freelance makeup. I am delighted to announce that I’ll be based in House of Glamour taking makeup appointments from Saturday the 12th of August onwards. I have over 3 years experience painting faces, no matter what the occasion, wedding, night out or festival. I most recently worked at the IFTAs creating red carpet looks on many Irish Celebs. I will be charging €30 for a full makeover & €35 with lashes. You can book by emailing me at bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or by messaging my Facebook page ‘bexblah’. Speaking of House of Glamour, I was there this week to get a few treatments before Thailand. I always get my nails done there as you know, so this time I went for nails that were a bit shorter and more colourful than usual, just because! I

24

also decided to get eyelash extensions as I don’t plan on wearing much, or any,

makeup at all in Thailand. I love Wispie long looking lashes and that’s exactly what I got. They took two hours and I honestly couldn’t even feel them when I was getting them done. Now that they’re on they’re not heavy or irritating at all. I wouldn’t have the strongest lashes because I wear glue on false ones so often, so I will be giving my lashes a break after this set. I also got my waxing done in House of Glamour for the first time, they do half price on Tuesdays!! I got a half leg and specialised bikini for €30, absolutely insane value!

want a nail appointment to book it in advanced, those things are like gold dust! Of course we are so lucky in Tralee to have a vast number of beauty salons that all offer great services. House of Glamour is just the one I can recommend most as that’s my salon of choice. I hope you have the most amazing week, stay glam, stay fab!

Rebecca

So if you’re looking for a one stop place to get totally ready for your holiday, I definitely recommend House of Glamour. They offer so many services and I’m always happy with the result! Make sure if you

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. So this week I’ll be talking about common gym mistakes every beginner can make.

2.

Everyone starts as a beginner. As we get comfortable with working out, eventually we learn the basics: how to use the machines, how to observe gym etiquette, and what happens if we don’t wipe the gym equipment. But even after you ditched the training wheels, you could still make grave rookie mistakes that sabotage your progress and leave you frustrated, confused, and exhausted. Even if you worked out for years, it could still happen.

1. SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS:

Tackling an insane goal all at once leads to failure: you’ll exhaust your time, willpower, and energy. You’ll also frustrate yourself because it takes so long to achieve. This can then lead to giving up before you’ve even started.

3.

NOT TRACKING YOURSELF: Record everything in your workout: what exercises you did, what weight you used, how many reps you did, etc. You should also track your body by taking photos and measuring your bodyweight, inches and body fat percentage. This will highlight your successes and failures so you can adjust your exercise program and diet to get the results you want! NOT HAVING A PLAN: Without a plan, you’ll end up wandering the gym looking for something to do. You’ll never build a great body doing that. There’s no system and you’ll prevent yourself from mastering exercises, waste time, and miss out on great results. With so many great beginner programs available, pick one, get started, and stick to it.

Don’t forget to change it up when it’s not challenging you! 4.

SKIPPING WORKOUTS: Some people skip a workout because they’re feeling tired, sore, or lazy. They forget that the secret to building an amazing body is simple, consistency. Honor the commitments you make to yourself. If you decide to workout on Mondays and Thursdays and Saturdays, schedule it in and get it done. If that’s too hard, cut your routine down to suit your body, but never skip it. There’s a difference!

5.

OVER DOING IT: There are beginners who live in the gym, workout six times a week, burn themselves out or get injured and then quit. Unless you’re an elite athlete or a high-level bodybuilder, avoid working out too often at the beginning. Doing too much, too soon will slow your progress because of the constant fatigue and lead to overtraining. For most beginners, 3-5 times a week is perfect depending on your body type and goals etc. You need to give your muscles, ligaments, and tendons time between each workout to recover, grow, and get stronger. Remember 3 or 4 good quality sessions are better than 6 or 7 forced ones.

Cover both sides of the steak with lemon slices. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours. Light a grill and brush with vegetable oil. Scrape off the seasonings and bring the steak to room temperature. Season with salt and pepper and grill over moderately high heat until medium-rare within, 3 1/2 minutes per side. Transfer to a carving board and let rest for 5 minutes. Thinly slice across the grain and serve.

In a bowl, gently toss the sweet potatoes with half of the remaining jerk vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper. Grill the potatoes over moderately high heat, turning and basting with the remaining vinaigrette, until lightly charred all over, 6 to 8 minutes. LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A JEWISH MAN AND A VIETNAMESE MAN WAITING IN THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE. A Vietnamese man and a Jewish man are waiting in the Doctor’s office for an appointment and as the time goes on they become more and more irritated until finally the Jewish man says, “I hate you Vietnamese people!”. Shocked, the Vietnamese man says, “What in the world would compel you to say something like that? Why do you hate Vietnamese people?” To which the Jewish man replies, “Because you bombed Pearl Harbor!” The Vietnamese man goes, “You idiot! That wasn’t the Vietnamese, that was the Japanese!” To which the Jewish man shrugs and says, “Vietnamese, Japanese, what’s the difference?” Stunned, the Vietnamese man says, “Yeah, well I hate all you Jewish people!” To which the Jewish man replies in great indignation, “That’s anti-Semitic! Why would you hate all Jewish people?” And the Vietnamese man says, “Because you sank the Titanic!” “You idiot,” bawls the Jewish man, “That was an iceberg!” To which the Vietnamese man replies, “Iceberg, Goldberg, what’s the difference?”

A MAN GETS PULLED OVER BY A COP

The cop goes up to the man’s window and informs him that he appeared to be swerving a bit. “Son I just need you to do a quick breathalyzer test.” “I can’t do that, officer, I have severe asthma. If I blow into that tube, I could risk an attack.” “Alright, then just come down to the station and we’ll do a blood test.” “I can’t do that either, I’m a hemophiliac. Any puncture will end up bleeding for hours then I’ll pass out.” “Okay, then step out of the car and we’ll do a standard field sobriety tes-” “Sorry, but I have a slight vitamin b12 deficiency, so I naturally shake while doing basic tasks, so the tests would be inconclusive.” “Well then just walk along in a straight line.” “I can’t do that either” , “Why?” “Because I’m drunk.” 30

TWO BLONDES MEET ON A VILLAGE ROAD.

One of the blondes was carrying a large gunny bag over her shoulder. ‘Hey there,’ hailed second blonde, ‘what is in the bag?’ ‘Chickens,’ came the reply. ‘If I guess how many, can I have one?’ ‘You can have both of them.’ ‘OK.. five?’ Said the second blonde.

A WIFE GOT SO MAD AT HER HUSBAND SHE PACKED HIS BAGS AND TOLD HIM TO GET OUT.

As he walked to the door she yelled, “I hope you die a long, slow, painful death.” He turned around and said, “So, you want me to stay?”

A DAD IS WAITING WITH HIS SHOTGUN FOR HIS DAUGHTERS’ DATES TO ARRIVE... A dad is waiting with his shotgun for his daughters’ dates to arrive. The doorbell rings and the father opens the door to the first young man who says “Hi, I’m Eddie. I’m here for Betty. We’re going out for spaghetti. Is she ready?” Strange kid but harmless, thinks the dad, and he lets the boy in. The doorbell rings again. The dad answers the door and the new young man says, “Hi, I’m Joe. I’m here for Flo. We’re going to a show. Is she ready to go?” The father lets him in. The doorbell rings for the third time. When the father opens the door, the date says “Hi, I’m Chuck...” KABLAM!

DEEP SEA DIVER

One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet below sea level. He noticed a guy at the same depth, but with no scuba gear whatsoever. The diver went below another 20 feet, and the guy joined him a moment later. The diver went down even farther and the same guy was right behind him. The confused diver took out out his waterproof chalkboard and wrote, “How the heck are you able to stay under this deep without equipment?” The guy took the board and chalk, erased what the diver had written, and wrote, “I’m drowning, you freakin moron...!”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HELP WITH SCHOOL COSTS Question I am the parent of a four-year-old daughter who will start Primary School in September. My only income is from my One-Parent Family Payment and €90 I get each week from a part-time job. I don’t get maintenance and I’m worried about the extra costs involved in sending my daughter to school. Is there State help available? Answer As you are getting a social welfare payment, you may be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) to help meet the cost of your daughter’s school uniform and footwear, as long as your weekly income is below a certain level. You are currently receiving a One-Parent Family Payment of €222.80 (including a child payment) and earning €90, so your weekly income is €312.80, which is below the income limit of €418.10 for a lone parent with one child and will entitle you to BSCFA. The BSCFA payment this year is €125 for a qualified child aged 4–11 years. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically in many cases. If you haven’t already received a letter from them, you will need to apply by 30 September 2017. Application forms are available on the Department’s website, welfare.ie, or from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office. A form can also be requested by SMS (text message) by texting ‘Form BTSCFA’ followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing the Department at BSCFA@ welfare.ie. The Department of Education and Skills also runs a School Books Grant Scheme which is available to Statefunded schools to help with the cost of school books. Some schools will help with the cost of buying textbooks or run a Textbook Rental Scheme. You should contact your daughter’s school principal to find out if this option is available at her new school.

TORQUING CARS! THE GRAND TOUR SEASON 2: WHEN WILL IT BE ON AMAZON PRIME? Former Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have made the jump from the BBC to Amazon Prime, with the first series of their new motoring show The Grand Tour becoming one of the online streaming service’s biggest hits. But what can we expect from season two? Here’s everything we know so far.

When will the second season of The Grand Tour arrive on Amazon Prime?

Amazon have not yet announced an official release date. However, speaking in a Facebook Live Q&A in February, Jeremy Clarkson confirmed that the second instalment would be released “this year”, which James May confirmed, adding that it would “go out this year at the same time the last one went out – whenever that was.” And on The One Show in July, May said: “October is when you’ll first be able to see it. But after that, you’ll be able to see it whenever you want, of course. I’m told to say that!” As the first series of The Grand Tour premiered on November 18, 2016, another autumn release looks likely.

When can I see a trailer?

Right now, as long as you’re an Amazon Prime member. To celebrate Prime Day, the streaming service has released a 30-second teaser featuring the usual vehicular mayhem in exotic locales.

Where will they be filming?

Production is already under way for the second series, and viewers can expect to see The Grand Tour’s travelling studio-tent pop up in Mozambique, Georgia and the USA. Judging by Clarkson’s Twitter feed, it seems Colorado may be on the cards for an American episode. The last series offered local fans the chance to watch the show live, by entering an online lottery for tickets to their filming sessions in Whitby, Lapland, Rotterdam and Loch Ness. It’s likely that viewers will be given the same opportunity for the second season, but no competition details have yet been announced.

Will it be better than Matt LeBlanc’s Top Gear?

Although the first series of the rebooted post-Clarkson Top Gear was generally considered a disaster (with a former Stig piping up to call it “really, really bad”), things have looked up for the BBC series since new presenter Matt LeBlanc shrugged off his co-host Chris Evans. According to Telegraph TV critic Ed Power, the current series of Top Gear has stormed ahead of Amazon’s effort. “With endless resources at its disposal, The Grand Tour has ended up a bit of an overcooked muddle,” he wrote, adding that when the two shows are compared the winner is “surely Top Gear by a tail-fin”. Will Clarkson and Co be able to rein in the “muddle” with a sleeker second series? Only time will tell.

CLEAN SWEEP: DUTCH TOWN GETS HYDROGEN FUEL CELL STREET CLEANER

To the untrained eye, this street sweeper looks like a normal municipal vehicle. But underneath, it’s a glimpse of the future – it runs on hydrogen. Launched in the town of Hoogezand in the Netherlands, the machine was originally built to run on diesel. But thanks to Dutch firm Holthausen and Finnish manufacturer Visedo, it now uses a hydrogen fuel cell for propulsion. That means that the operator fills the tank with hydrogen, which the machine then uses to create the electricity that drives its powertrain. The only emission from this process is pure water. In the context of street-sweeping, that means a day and a half of work before it needs to be refuelled. More importantly for local residents, the hydrogen fuel cell sweeper is significantly quieter than its diesel-burning former self. The old version emitted 120dBA, while this one emits just 60dBA – from an uncomfortably loud noise, to one comparable to a normal conversation. Hydrogen fuel cell technology is one of the most promising ‘future fuels’ possibilities in the automotive sector, and this project demonstrates a possible application. Other cities are showing an interest in the new technology, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Vatican. “Vatican City is currently cleaned with battery-powered electric cleaners but the sweeper batteries are empty after 4.5 hours of operating. Our vehicles can operate for one and half days on a single charge,” Mr Holthausen added.

TORQUING CARS! RANGE ROVER VELAR – ALONG WITH THE JAGUAR E-PACE, JLR’S OTHER EAGERLY AWAITED NEW CAR

AAs Jaguar prepares the global unveiling of its new E-Pace mid-sized SUV on July 13, its sister company Land Rover is about to stage the international test drive of its new Velar. This, the fourth Range Rover model, fits between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport in size and price. It’s also the acme of the stripped-down style evinced by Land Rover’s design department under Gerry McGovern. Even the door handles sink back into the doors and the headlamps are super-narrow LED slits. The Velar is a striking mid-sized, five-seat crossover vehicle, designed as family transport for the well heeled. The name, which is derived from the Latin for sail or veiled, was used on the 26 first prototypes of the original Range Rover designed by Spen King and Gordon Bashford, launched in 1970 and arguably the world’s first SUV. We wanted an emphasis on the classic Range Rover proportions,” says Frascella. “The short front overhangs and long tail give an incredible elegance, moving the emphasis rearward like luxury yachts... There’s nothing quite like it.” Based on the aluminium-intensive body frame also shared by Jaguar’s F-Pace, the Velar will be on sale this summer priced initially in the UK , then Ireland and Europe at between £44,830 and £85,450 with a typical transaction price of £61,000.

GERMAN CARMAKER AUDI HAS SPARKED OUTRAGE IN CHINA AFTER IT LIKENED WOMEN TO SECOND HAND CARS IN AN ADVERT.

The advert depicts a wedding ceremony which is interrupted by the groom’s mother who begins to examine the bride, checking her teeth and behind her ears, much to the young woman’s displeasure. The ceremony continues after the mother gives the OK signal to the couple. But the mother then takes aim at the bride once more, signaling that she forgot to check her breasts. The advert then cuts away to an image of an Audi car with the voiceover: “An important decision must be made carefully”. Viewers are then encouraged to visit Audi’s second hand car sales website. The advert, which appears on the Chinese Internet and at cinemas, has provoked a furious backlash on the Chinese Internet.Ma Qiji, an expert from the China Advertising Association of Commerce, told The Telegraph that he believed the advert could flout advertising regulations in China.

NISSAN QASHQAI GETS MID-LIFE UPDATE

The original urban cross-over is now the UK’s third best selling car behind Ford’s Fiesta and Focus - 10 years on from when Nissan broke the mould. To keep the momentum moving Nissan have just launched a midlife model update.More tech, premium materials and subtle visual changes are the main areas the firm have concentrated on. it is easy to see the appeal of the five-door which launched a whole new sector in 2007.The second generation model was released three years ago, and has now been refined even further in a bid to keep it ahead of the pack. This crowded market-place already has over 20 rivals including the Renault Kadjar, Peugeot 3008, Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. Designed, developed and manufactured in the UK the Qashqai has been a cash cow for Nissan and they need to keep its 10 per cent market share. New for this model is a range topping fifth trim level Tekna+ Inside the top spec has as standard new premium seats trimmed in the higher quality soft nappa leather, with 3D quilting on the centre panels The driver’s seat features electrically controlled four-way pneumatic lumbar support with memory function. Across the range he engines are the same as in the current model with a choice of two diesels, a 1.5 litre 111bhp or 1.6 litre with 131bhp. The petrol version comes as a 1.2 litre 116bhp or 1.6 litre 166bhp. Power can be delivered through a six-speed manual gearbox or CVT XTronic automatic transmission. But beware as the four wheel drive is only available with the larger diesel engine and a manual gearbox.Nissan expect the 1.5 diesel manual N-Conecta to be the best seller with its CO2 g/km figure of 99 g/km and combined fuel figure of 74 mpg. 38

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BEING THE CHILD OF A COACH IS NOT THE EASIEST THING: I read an interesting article on Grassroots Football this week regarding kids that are coached by a parent. What made this worth giving consideration to was that it was written from the child’s point of view. At this time of the year the thoughts of many clubs who play in the ‘winter season’ turns to appointing coaches for the coming season. These include soccer and rugby as well as some GAA competitions. But whenever those decisions are made those having to make them, either the Committee of the club or a Director of the chosen sport – one that they will have to consider is that thorny question of whether they will allow parents to coach teams that contains their sons or daughters. Finding coaches to cover teams is rightfully getting more difficult. I say rightfully as the day of just getting someone to stand in is gone. Coaches must be Garda vetted and have the appropriate Child Welfare courses done before they can work with children under 18. While this is not a huge commitment it does take a bit of time but any club appointing coaches without both of these boxes ticked could be asking for trouble. This is before you look at the qualifications of the applicant coaches and depending on the clubs philosophy if this needs to be in the shape of accredited coaching courses or just experience. So you are on the Committee and before you is an application from a parent to coach the team that his son / daughter is in. We often consider this from the point of view of the adult and how they will deal with this – does their offspring always start, do they ever substitute them and how they deal with other parents? But what is it like from the player’s point of view to have their parent as their coach? In the article it spoke of the fine summers evening when the child wants to go to the beach or the cinema on a winter’s Friday night for example but you are the team coach so you cannot cancel training just because your child does not want to go. However other children will just miss training

40

TRALEE ADVERTISER

and do their family thing. The other consideration is that as a coach you need to be there well before the training time and usually are there afterwards. So your child will have to be at the club for that length of time as well. From the child’s point of view when they play well they love to get praise for their coach but you are their parent and you are worried if you praise your child how will others and other parents re-act? It’s a delicate balancing act and if you get that wrong it can lead to your child not getting the praise they deserve. Sometimes your child will wish that you are just a regular parent able to shout and cheer him on. And we didn’t even look at starting line-ups, or substitutions! None of this is meant to put parents off who volunteer to coach a team with their son or daughter involved. It is to give a mention to those kids who have parents as coaches – always remember that the coach, if they are doing things properly and for the proper reasons, are helping the whole team achieve. And to all parents who coach, but especially those who coach teams with their kids involved, a big thank you. You will all understand the issues I raise above while those without kids playing on their teams will probably not have thought of them. There is no coaching without some sacrifice but without coaches we would not have any teams and can you image a world without sport for our kids. JOHNNO GONE TOO YOUNG: Far too often in the town we lose good people and often these are people that have dedicated a lot of their lives to sport both as players and volunteers. And that makes it hard to write an individual piece on any one person as they all deserve to be remembered but that is not possible. However there are times I feel I have to put in a piece and this week I feel I have to remember John O’Flynn who I became friends with when I joined the Kerry District League committee a good few years ago. Johnno had a very good playing career and was one of a rare group of players that won medal with both the Park and Tralee Dynamos and was liked as much in both clubs. He was also a Friday 21st July 2017

very important member of the Kerry District League for a number of years doing many roles including Assistant Secretary. He had that great way about him which is why his passing at much too young an age last weekend saddened all those involved in soccer, not to mention the loss he is to his family and many many friends. I would have only bumped into him on rare occasions in recent years and when you hear some has passed on you regret not staying in closer contact. Johnno was remembered at Mounthawk Park with a moment’s applause before the u17 League of Ireland game versus Galway on Sunday. It was a small but fitting tribute to a man who will always be remembered for his contribution to soccer in Tralee. PARK LIFE: While it might be the off season these are busy times at St Brendan’s Park FC. The big news is that they have announced their Senior A management team for the coming season. The Park had to pull its first team last season so this is really a case of a fresh start. The management team will be James O’Sullivan and Paul Duffy who will begin pre-season training shortly. One player who won’t be playing with the Park this season is Adam O’Rourke. A former player with the club Adam has signed this week for Wexford FC, who are of course managed by Damien Locke. Speaking at his signing Adam said that “I have always wanted to test myself at this level. I have been training with the lads for the last couple of weeks and am delighted to put pen to paper. It is a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get onto the field!” The Park are doing a number of developments at the club and to help fund these are holding a 5K Fun Run on Sunday August 13th starting at Christy Leahy Park. Entry for adults is e10 and u16’s e5.
