LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Eric is looking around for college accommodation for next year. He has seen a lot of what can only be described as woeful accommodation that he could only call Grotsville. On apartment had only a bed, a shared bathroom and a load of spiders for company. He is wondering what he should look out for and what he should expect in seeking his accommodation. Fortunately for Eric despite the demand for student accommodation there are certain standards that all such accommodation should meet. A simple checklist would be a follows: 1. Property structural repair and the landlord is liable for repairs to interior and exterior of the premises within a reasonable amount of time. 2. Toilet , wash hand basin, , fixed bath or shower hot and cold water in separate room with ventilation and screening for privacy. 3. Heating applicances in all rooms that can be controlled by tenant. 4. Facilicities for cooking-4 ring hob over and grill with air extractor. Fridge and freezer, microwave, sink, enough presses, washing machine or access to communal facilities, and drying clothes facilities. 5. Adequate ventilation and lighting. 6. Fire blanket and smoke alarms. 7. Adequate Refuse facilities. 8. Electricity and gas supply in good repair and safe working order. Some tips for students: It is important if you are only there for 9 months to not sign a lease for more than that time. Make sure to take photographs of all the accommodation when you go into it. Do an inventory of all contents and furniture. Often your landlord will have one done up already and you can both sign it. Live with people you trust who will pay the bills with you otherwise if you co-tenants don’t pay you could be left with the bills. Get receipts for all payments made to the landlord or his/her agent. Lawquip: A Receptionist Lola was working the front desk of a hotel one night, when a guest from room 430 calls. “Help!” he yelled. “I’m trapped!” “What do you mean, trapped?” Lola asked him. “Well, I see three doors,” the man said. “The first one is to the bathroom, the next one opens the closet, and the third door has a “Do Not Disturb” sign on it.”

Mc CAROLINE’S HIRING TIPS: Enery When a vacancy arises, employers can make the mistake of taking the simple route of hiring quickly just to fill the role. The key thing is to know what you want & to have a specific detail of job requirements with desired personal characteristics. This then can be used as a hiring scorecard at screening and interview stage to determine suitability for the role. Make sure you widen the search, try to use as many avenues and resources to attract a more diverse range of candidates to increase the potential of attracting good talent. An employer should consider is the candidate qualified for the role? Will they get along and fit in with the team? Don’t hire just because you like them - ensure the candidates experience and strengths match the responsibility of the position. Don’t put too much emphasis on the interview. You may need to go beyond the interview performance to assess the candidate’s suitability. Sometimes a more probing second round interview with competency based question or a presentation is required. Occupational Personality Questionnaires can be useful to determine the right candidate. When you have selected the candidate, a good company orientation and a clear training program will help them settle into their new position and feel more engaged in their role to reach their potential within their new role.
The Job Suite provides full services to assist with the full cycle of Recruitment and Selection including Occupational Personality Questionnaires to assist you with choosing the right candidates.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: GP SERVICES WITH MEDICAL CARD Question I have a medical card but my doctor has recently charged me for a medical certificate and for a blood test? Should I have to pay for these or should they be covered by the medical card? Answer Doctors provide services to medical card holders under the General Medical Scheme (GMS). This means that they have a contract for these services with the Health Service Executive (HSE). The services provided include consultations with patients and necessary treatments that would normally be provided by a general practitioner (GP). GPs also provide prescriptions for drugs, medicines and appliances as required.

Not all GP services are covered under the agreement. For example, if you need a medical report for a driving licence application you may be charged. You may also be charged for medical certificates for absence from work. If you need a medical report to apply for a social welfare payment, the Department of Social Protection may cover the fee. If you have a medical card or a GP visit card and you need a blood test to diagnose or monitor a condition, this should be provided free of charge. If you have been charged for a blood test by your doctor, you can complain to the HSE. The HSE deals with these complaints on a case by case basis and will arrange for a refund, where appropriate. You make a complaint by contacting your Local Health Office.

LOVES TRALEE! FANTASTIC TO SEE RENOWNED TOURIST WEBSITE LOVINDUBLIN.COM TALKING ABOUT THE GREAT ATTRACTIONS THAT TRALEE HAS ..SOMETIMES WE DONT APPRECIATE THEM UNTIL OTHERS DO ! 1. BANNA STRAND Kerry’s number one holiday destination, Banna strand is as heavenly as it is charming. Miles and miles of open, unspoilt beach to walk along.
spinning old school funk.
Also a perfect place to bring the dogs, if you’ve treated the pups to a holiday too.
This summer, make sure not to miss the incredible Oileán - a celebratory play of the Blasket Islands.
2. THE ROAST HOUSE
They also whip up a life-changing candyfloss cocktail... Enough said.
The Roast House boasts incredible breakfasts of rich buttermilk pancakes, lunches of barbecued pulled pork sandwiches and dinners of sumptuous veal with red wine jus - but it’s their coffee that really takes the biscuit, or em, coffee bean. You simply couldn’t go anywhere else for your morning pick-me-up. 3. KERRY COUNTY MUSEUM
5. BLENNERVILLE WATERMILL Here is an attraction that is for sure not to be missed - even though it would indeed be hard to, considering the sheer enormity of it. Just €4 gets you an hour-long glimpse into the past, a terrific view of Tralee Bay, the River Lee and the canal AND a model train display. 6. TRALEE BAY WETLANDS CENTRE Popular with locals and tourists alike, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre quite literally has something for everyone. Their nature safari boat ride, spanning over 15 minutes, is the highlight of a visit to the Centre. The main lake has pedal boats, costing €10 per 30 minutes, and row boats, coming in at €8 per 30 minutes, for hire, and a light-filled lakeside café. There’s also a smaller lake where you can learn to fish too. 7. GUIDED TOUR OF THE DINGLE PENINSULA Witness the breathtaking postcardworthy beauty of the Dingle Peninsula in your very own guided tour. You’ll follow a coastal trail on windswept cliffs and beautiful coastlines with fresh seafood and tips on where the locals go.
Kerry County Museum is a fantastic activity for adults and kids alike, and is perfect for those long rainy days that Irish summers often provide us with. Currently, they have a special exhibit on the 1916 Rising, as well as a Medieval Experience with live actors who involve you in every step of the way. It feels like stepping back in time, and is a deadly experience for all the fam.
THE NATIONAL FOLK CENTRE Siamsa Tire is the real jewel in the crown of Tralee - residents are insanely lucky to have this wonderful auditorium on their doorstep. You’re completely guaranteed a good viewing spot due to the size and layout of this incredible place.
9. QUINLAN’S FISH Award-winning, nationally famous and locally produced fresh fish; Quinlan’s isn’t lying when it says it stocks Kerry’s freshest fish. This is where the locals do their shopping. But beware - there are queues out the door almost every single day. 10. CHEZ CHRISTOPHE Consistently delicious, finely-produced and ludicrously high standards, Chez Christophe is a heavenly slice of France, right in the heart of Tralee. This hidden gem has melt-in-your-mouth quiche, polenta-crusted aubergine with chilli and almond filling, tender monkfish fillet and one of the best wine lists you’ll see in Munster. 11. ROSE OF TRALEE ...you thought we’d forgotten, didn’t you? The Rose of Tralee kicks off every August right in the heart of it all, and is so much more than just a beauty pageant. It’s fiveday-long extravaganza, bookended by a gala ball and a ‘midnight madness’ parade led by the newly crowned Rose, followed by a wondrous fireworks display. The town of Tralee blossoms for the occasion, with visitors travelling from all across the world to see the roses, and escorts, shine.
Tour highlights include: A stroll along Inch Strand, learning some Gaeilge, driving the Slea Head driving route, and seeing the incredible Wild Atlantic Way in all her glory. 8. SIAMSA TÍRE,
4. ROUNDY’S BAR Meticulously converted from a terrace house (complete with tree still growing right through the courtyard gardenturned-interior), this trendy little bar has cool tunes, live bands and regular DJs 8

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...
FIRST EVER KERRY SCIENCE FESTIVAL TO TAKE PLACE IN NOVEMBER An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, T.D. and Science Foundation Ireland are calling on businesses, communities and professionals in Kerry to take part in Science Week 2016 from the 13-20 November which will see Kerry hosting its first ever regional science festival. Science is all around us; from technology to food, from healthcare to entertainment, from transport to energy - science forms a part of almost everything we do. However, according to the SFI Science in Ireland Barometer, almost three quarters of the population still feel that developments in science and technology are too specialised for them to understand.
This festival, the first of its kind in Kerry, will see Kerry celebrate where science is found in the everyday in and around the county. A programme of public events will be easily accessible to Kerry audiences including: STEM in Brewing as Gaeilge, featuring the Killarney Brewing Company & Dingle Brewing Company; STEM in Sport; and STEM goes Underground, will which demonstrate how STEM was used to locate and develop the Crag Caves as a tourism product. A number organisations like the IDA, GAA and Astronomy Ireland, to name but a few, have already confirmed that they will run individual Science Week events. A number of businesses all over the county will take the opportunity to show employees, teenagers and children all about how science plays a role in their work. Science Foundation Ireland has partnered with organisations and businesses across Ireland, including science festivals in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, the Midlands and Sligo. In addition to the new festival in Kerry, there will also be new festivals in Cavan/Monaghan, and a Teagasc-run festival will see science events spanning eight counties. At the announcement, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, T.D. said: “I want to ask communities, businesses, sporting organisations, public bodies, schools – any organisation in Kerry, big or small – to get involved in Science Week 2016, which is taking place from 13-20 November. Science, technology, engineering and maths all play a huge role in our everyday lives and in our economy. Our scientific achievements in Ireland are something to really be proud of and Science Week is an opportunity for us all to express that pride and get engaged with the science all around us. Organisations can run their own event, or get involved in Science Week through the activities and festivals that will be happening countrywide. I hope this year’s Science Week will see science celebrated in every corner of Ireland.” Speaking about the new festival in Kerry, Director of Strategy and Communications for Science Foundation Ireland, Dr. Ruth Freeman said: “This is the first time Kerry will have a regional science festival for Science Week and their success in receiving Science Foundation Ireland funding is really remarkable. They are running brilliant events for young and old all over Kerry, highlighting how science is all around us, playing a part in every aspect of our lives. With events in English and Irish, in businesses and schools, sports and community organisations – we are confident that Kerry’s first regional science festival will be a great success.” An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D. has been joined in his call to action by CEO of Altocloud and RTÉ Dragon, Barry O’Sullivan and RTÉ Weather presenter, Evelyn Cusack. Evelyn uses Science Week as an opportunity to share weather science facts, while Barry’s industry experience highlights why and how organisations big and small can get involved in the celebrations.

KERRY ROSE DANIELLE O’SULLIVAN HITTING THE ROAD TO THE DOME FOR 2016 ROSE OF TRALEE FESTIVAL KERRY Rose Danielle O’Sullivan is rallying her supporters to make the short trip from Killarney to join her in the Dome at the Rose of Tralee International Festival from 17 to 23 August. She will be among 65 Roses from all over the world who will be at this year’s extended Festival which will include parades, funfair, circus, 70 hours of free and affordable entertainment, Fashion Show and fireworks displays. Danielle, 23, a Masters student at University of Limerick, said: “I feel so thankful and privileged to be given the opportunity to represent my county at this year’s Rose of Tralee, and look forward to the adventure ahead.” Prior to arriving in Tralee, Danielle will embark on a five day tour taking in some of Ireland’s top tourism landmarks such as Guinness Storehouse, Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens, The K Club and Kilmainham Gaol. When the Roses arrive in the Kingdom of Kerry, they will sample some of the most famous scenery and tourist attractions in the world. She’ll have plenty of Kerry company as the Luxembourg Rose, Síle Reidy is from Ballymacelligott and the Ottawa, Queensland, Texas and Westmeath Roses also have family links to the Kingdom. The format for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival has changed to allow every Rose travel to Tralee to enjoy the event in its entirety. The Communications Manager of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, John Drummey, said: “For the past 11 years a qualifying event was staged in the midlands at the end of May at which 32 Roses were selected to appear on TV in August and ultimately get to enjoy all the fun of the Festival. The good news is that every Rose who is selected to represent her county/city/state/country will travel to the Festival in Tralee. The Roses will still take part in a qualifying process, as RTE can only accommodate 32 Roses on live TV with Dáithí Ó Sé.” Each Rose who takes part in the qualifying selections, also presented by Dáithí Ó Sé in the Dome, on either August 17th or 18th and she’ll find out on Sunday 21st August if she will be appearing on the televised selections on Monday 22nd or Tuesday 23rd August.
However, the Kerry Rose will be the only one guaranteed a place on the live TV selection on either Monday or Tuesday night. Such is the continued success of the Rose of Tralee on TV, RTÉ are introducing a third Rose of Tralee TV programme from this year onwards - The Road to the Dome will be aired on RTÉ One at 6.30pm on Monday 22nd August. The Televised Selections will be broadcast as usual at 8pm on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd August on RTÉ One. Anyone who wishes to travel to Tralee to support their favourite Rose in the Dome or to enjoy any of the live music entertainment during the Festival can purchase tickets from www.roseoftralee.ie. Tipperary Crystal is the lead sponsor of the Rose of Tralee International Festival which is also proudly sponsored by RTE, Kerry County Council, The Rose Hotel, The Loop at Dublin and Cork Airports, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, Irish Independent, Maldron Hotel Group and Fáilte Ireland. 16

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! Hope you’re all having a great week! Six weeks to go until my holiday and I’m so excited!
I know that lots of you are probably going away soon too so this week I’m going to talk about how to keep on track on holidays. MODERATION While I do believe in treating myself to a weekly cheat meal or two, making a daily habit of doing so will add up quickly. Yes, you should taste the local flavors and experience your travels for what they are, but save the super indulgent meal for one or two special nights during your trip. There is no reason why you can’t order healthy meals like fresh fish, lean protein sources and veggies and be just as satisfied. Make better choices so that you can have that special meal or two, and enjoy it without the guilt. Just don’t make it an all-day, everyday habit. HYDRATION Drinking sugary beverages and traveling go hand in hand for many of us. Try to choose cocktails that are not loaded with sugary sticky, sweet mixers. Those calories will add up fast; not to mention those are the ones that offer the biggest hangover the next day. Instead, stick with clear liquors such as vodka or tequila and try mixing with soda water and fresh lemon or lime. Be sure to drink plenty of water all day to avoid getting dehydrated. EXERCISE A gym isn’t necessary to get in a great workout. Plan to run, hike, bike or swim and stay active! Try to walk as much as possible when it comes to sight-seeing, run on the beach or surrounding areas or do a quick HIIT workout in your room. You can lay on the beach all day long guilt free if you’ve already killed your workout. Incorporate exercise into your day early on and check it off your list. When I travel, if I am unable to lift or find an adequate gym, I always lay down some mileage. Walking or running is better than nothing at all. No excuses! GUILT FREE Whatever you decide to do, do it without guilt. If you’ve worked hard and plan to enjoy a not-so-healthy meal, do so with intent and love. Don’t shame yourself the next day for it. Enjoy yourself and the hard work and time it took to prepare for your trip. Travel Fit!

STIR-FRIED SALT AND PEPPER SHRIMP 10 TO 12 LARGE SHRIMP OR PRAWNS INGREDIENTS • 1 cup cornstarch • 1/2 tablespoon salt • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1 to 2 tablespoons red or green chile pepper, sliced • 1/2 cup green onion, sliced • 1/2 cup white onion, chopped into 1-inch pieces • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon fish sauce • 1/2 tablespoon butter • 2 to 3 tablespoons olive/vegetable oil • Vegetable, for frying • Lettuce and/or cooked rice, for serving METHOD 1. Using a knife, slice down the backs of the prawns to remove the vein. Depending on how daring your crowd is, you can either choose to cut off the legs and antennas or leave them on. Clean the shrimp in cold water and then proceed to generously toss them in cornstarch, covering them entirely. 2. Preheat a frying pan with oil to high heat, . Add the shrimp and let them fry in the hot oil for approximately 2 to 3 minutes or until they are golden and crispy. Remove the shrimp and place them on a paper towel. 3. In a wok over high heat, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of vegetable/olive oil (preferably vegetable), the green chilies, garlic, white onion, salt, sugar, butter, and fish sauce. Allow the garlic and onion mixture to cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the shrimp and stir-fry for another 1 to 2 minutes. 4. Serve immediately on a bed of lettuce as an appetizer or as a main dish accompanied by white rice. If you’d like a dipping sauce, just mix some salt and pepper with lime juice in a small sauce plate on the side Recipes by

IT’S ONLY A JOKE AN OLD LADY DECIDES TO CHECK ON HER 3 SON-IN-LAWS
GRAVEYARD SHORTCUT
A man’s car breaks down in the middle of the night. He knows the area well and realizes that the quickest way to the nearest service station is through an old graveyard. He’s walking along the headstones when in the distance he hears a faint tapping noise. As he gets deeper into the graveyard, the eerie tapping gets louder and louder. He very anxiously turns a corner and sees the source of the tapping is an old man with a hammer and chisel, hunched over a headstone. Relief washes over him and he says, “I was beginning to freak out because of that noise. I thought this place might have been haunted. What on earth are you doing here so late at night anyway?” The old man merely continues chiseling and says “They spelled my name wrong.”
She wanted to see who respects/cares for her the most. She goes to the lake near the eldest son-in-laws place and jumps. The son-in-law dives in and rescues her. Next day, he sees a toyota corolla parked in front of his house with a letter -- Thanks from your Mother-in-law. Then she goes to her second son-in-law places and jumps in a lake near his house. The second son-in-law also saves her. Next day he too gets a toyota corolla as a gift with a letter -- Thanks from your Motherin-law. Now the old lady goes to her third son-in-law’s place and jumps in the lake. He does not save her and she drowns. Next day he sees a Ferrari parked in front TWO MEN WALK of his house with a letter -- Thanks from INTO A BAR your Father-in-law. And after a few rounds the first man turned to the

Doctor: Oh wow. That reminds me of something that happened to me recently. Sam: Oh yeah? What? Doctor: Well I was walking in the woods one day and I came across a rabbit. I lifted my walking stick, pointed it at the rabbit and yelled ‘BANG!’ Suddenly the rabbit fell over, dead. What do you think about that, Sam? Sam thinks for a minute Sam: Well, I think somebody else must have shot that rabbit! Doctor: My point exactly!

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... ITS STRICTLY FUN AT THE DOME THIS YEAR! Austin Stacks Annual Fundraiser, Strictly Come Dancing is always a much anticipated night of entertainment at the Festival Dome. The launch night for the show took place in the Austin Stacks clubhouse in Connolly Park on Thursday 4th August, and the couples who are participating this year were unveiled. The twelve local couples are currently busy rehearsing with choreographer, Jackie O Mahoney, who has already noted that the standard is incredibly high this year. Jackie’s creativity and innovative ideas ensure that each year the night becomes bigger and better, and this year is no exception. The dancers are enjoying the experience immensely so far, and apart from the inevitable nerves, they are very much enthusiastic and determined to give it their best shot. This year, Austin Stacks are delighted to welcome Audiology Medical Services on board, as main sponsors of the event. Based in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, AMS are a family run premier independent gearing healthcare practice, who offer professional advice for patients and their referring specialists. Charles Lewis, Director of AMS, will be one of the judges on the night and we are very grateful to them for their generous support of this event. Each dancer has been sponsored by a local business, as listed below, and the club are extremely thankful to them for their support. All of the funds raised on the night will go towards the Nun’s Field development at Connolly Park. The dancers have each chosen a charity, and the winning couple will receive a cash donation of €500 for their chosen charity. Tickets for the night will be available shortly from Garveys, Supervalu and Kevin Barry’s Newsagents, Rock Street. Ticket

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...
CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDE PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONAL ROSE OF TRALEE FESTIVAL UP TO 20,000 EXPECTED AT LOCAL SPINOFF
On Saturday, August 20th, the community of Tralee will host a 50km cycle as part of the Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff series. A SpinOff is a locally organised cycle that takes place once each month after the main 14-day Cycle around the island of Ireland ends. The events are locally organised, owned by the community and championed by Cycle Against Suicide ‘local leaders’. A SpinOff has all the colour, energy and fun of the annual Cycle but is packed into a single day. Entertainment, refreshments and, of course, a mental well-being presentation all take place as part of the SpinOff. The Tralee SpinOff promises to be a particularly special event. It will depart from Aspen Grove, beside Lidl, at 2pm on Saturday, August 20th. The 50km route travels via the picturesque harbour of Fenit, before continuing past Banna Beach and on to the beautiful coastal village of Ballyheigue. The cyclists will conclude the SpinOff by cycling through Tralee Town and leading home the Rose Parade. According to Jim Breen, Cycle Against Suicide founder, and local entrepreneur, “We are thrilled, and privileged, to participate in the Rose Parade this year. Every individual, every family, every community has some connection with suicide, self-harm or depression. Our mental health is just like our physical health - it is something we have to nurture and be mindful of. From time to time we have to ask for help - and that’s OK. Cycle Against Suicide continues to work towards breaking the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland by raising awareness of the message, ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’. Up to 20,000 spectators are expected in Tralee for the Rose Parade. Concluding our SpinOff by cycling through the town and leading in the parade is a phenomenal opportunity to challenge stigma, positively change mind-set around mental health, and promote help-seeking behaviour by signposting those in need to where help is available. The community of Tralee has always been remarkably supportive of the Movement, taking our message to their hearts, and making it their own. Our local partners and sponsors have contributed immeasurably to our work, both locally and nationally, and we continue to be hugely grateful for their ongoing support”. This SpinOff is the perfect opportunity to help spread the Cycle Against Suicide message, “It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help”, while simultaneously participating in an incredibly uplifting and positive event. Join us in breaking the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland. Register now at www.CycleAgainstSucide.com/SpinOff, or register on the day at Aspen Grove, beside Lidl, from 12.30pm. There are also many other ways to become involved. If you would prefer to volunteer rather than cycle, the Tralee SpinOff Committee welcomes all support, both in advance of the event, as well as on the day itself. Check us out at www.facebook.com/Cycle-Against-Suicide-Tralee-SpinOff- or @CASuicide on Twitter. Together, shoulder to shoulder, we can break the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY’S SUCCESSFUL SUMMER KICKS ON: It was another great week for Kerry GAA with both teams getting through in Croke Park as expected. The seniors were in a no win situation as everyone expected them to go through. They will go into the semi-final without having been tested. But Eamonn and his coaching staff will have the team in top form for the game against Dublin or Donegal. Great credit goes to the minor’s and Peter Keane and his fellow management. This is a hard age to get the best out of and they have done this so far. Last Sunday they were in control against Derry but conceded a second goal and by half time the sides were level. Other teams might have folded but they came out in the second half and blew their opponents away. Like all minor titles this one will be hard to win with both Kildare and Donegal said to have very strong teams. But the highlight of the week was win in the All Ireland final by the u16 girls who we talk about further down the article. It was a great win by a hugely talented squad. And of course we wish the Kerry Juniors the best of luck in their All Ireland decider this weekend.
TRALEE TRIATHLON’S INTERNATIONAL FIELD: Over 400 competitors took part in the Tri Kingdom Come Tralee Triathlon based in Fenit last Sunday. Sponsored by Landers the event took place in bright sunny weather with experienced and new triathletes in the field. The introductory distance saw newcomers taking part over 250m swim, an 8km bije ride and a 2.5km run. Castlegregory’s Rose Smith was delighted to complete the course, having only learned to swim earlier this year. The Try-A-Tri was won by Marcos Garcia with Tralee Triathlon club’s Tom Gentleman, a top class cyclist as well. The majority of competitors took part in the Sprint Distance which was over a 750m swim, a 20k bike ride and a 5km run. This was won by Kilflynn native Mark Nolan who now lives and trains in Cork and who competed the course in just 58.01. To make it a sweeter day for Mark he was joined on the podium by his wife Amy Wolfe who finished in 1 hour 9 minutes, having had a baby just 7 months ago. Mark came home just ahead of Tralee’s Cillian Tierney who was seconds in 58.21. The Spa athlete has been in great form with a number of

podiums already including the Hell of the West Standard Distance National Championships and hopefully more to come. The relay section is a great way to get people involved and this was won by a team led by local man Martin O’Regan. Overall it was a good day for the host club members and indeed athletes from all over Kerry as they won various age categories including the relay race. Race Director, Joanne Allman, was thrilled with the event and praised everyone who made it the success that it was. Tralee Triathlon Club teamed up with Fenit RNLI Lifeboat station as their charity partner for the event and the club and the event has helped raise substantial funds for this life-saving service. PARNELL’S NEWS: Minors: Well done to the Minors who ran Ballyduff very close in their recent match. There was only 2 points between the sides which shows how far the Tralee boys have come. The final score was Parnells 2-09 to Ballyduffs 2-11. Cúl Camp: Parnells Cúl Camp runs from the 15th to 19 of August. With great coaches and opportunities for important skills development, these camps are always popular. Young players also love the gear that comes with the camp. Book a place for your child online or register on the day. Under 12 Camogie: Please keep an eye out for texts about Under 12s. We are awaiting confirmation of rescheduled county league, on club were not available for Monday the 8th, so we are awaiting a new date. Camogie Golf Classic: Anyone who is available to play in the Kerry Camogie Fundraiser on Saturday 13 August, please contact Richard McCluskey in Parnells. Summer Break: Parnells 2016 Summer Break ends soon. All age groups will train again Fridays the 12th. Please keep an eye out for manager texts for any notifications for individual teams. ST PAT’S NEWS: With the Kerry game and the Bank Holiday we will have the Lotto numbers in next week’s column. Seniors: The Seniors claimed the County League points following a 1-10 to 1-07 away win at Gneeveguilla. The games was one of those of the proverbial two halves and St Pat’s, coming off a good win last week , started the brightest and led 1-09 to 0-05 at the break. The home side took over in the second period and St Pat’s needed a big save from John Fitgerald to keep them ahead. The defence held out under extreme pressure to secure the win. There next game is due to be a home tie against St Senan’s on the weekend of August 13th and 14th. Ladies Team: St Pat’s are hoping to get a Ladies team up and running over the next few weeks. Anyone from 16 up is welcome to play and there is a meeting this Friday, August 5th at 9pm in the clubhouse with all welcome.

The Ladies are holding a Pre-loved Clothing event on Friday August 12th and Saturday 13th. Anyone with donations of clothes and other items, including sportswear, can drop them into the club, by this weekend if possible. STACKS STORIES: Those attending the FootbalL Camp are enjoying a great week and it all goes on until this Saturday. The u6/8/10’s train this Sunday at 11am. The u10 boys had a great weekend in Dublin and were in Croke Park to cheer on the Kerry minors and seniors. The club wants to say a special thanks to Kilmacud Crokes and St Vincents for the welcome they gave our boys and their accompanying adults. The 12/13’s team defeated Ardfert in the u13 Town League Division 1 final. A goal from Conor Horan set the Tralee boys up to lead 1-08 to 0-06 at half time. Evan Foley hit a second for the Rockies and then Horan completed his hattrick to see the Black and Amber take the title 4-20 to 1-10. The u14’s were ahead from the start against Na Gaeil and led 1-9 to 0-2 mid-way through the first half. Credit to Na Gaeil they never game up and a purple patch saw them reduce the gap to just 4 points. However the Stacks boys steadied the ship and won by 7 points. The u16 A’s defeated Listowel 3-16 to 3-3 while the B’s continue their Lee Strand County League campaign. KERRY CAMOGIE NEWS: Kerry finished their u16C All Ireland Championship with a hard fought away win over Roscommon. The home side made the better start and were 3 points ahead before Kerry scored. Lisa Kearney and Sarah O’Sullivan both hit goals for Kerry to leave the half time score Roscommon 1-06 to Kerry’s 2-0. Into the second half and had early points from Shanahan, Stack, Lynch and Buckley but Roscommon were also hitting long range points to stay in touch. Kerry then hit a third goal from Shanahan but the home side also had one of their own to set up a tight finish. When Erin Stack scored Kerry’s fourth they were on the way but they needed to big saves from keeper Clodagh Begley to see them through 4-7 to 2-11. The girls have shown great improvement all season and many of them are again underage next season. They compete in a Munster Blitz in Mallow this Saturday. Camogie Academy: Bookings are still being taken for the Kerry Camogie Academy that takes place in Tralee next Tuesday and Wednesday, August 9th and 10th. The Academy is for girls aged 13-16 and a bus services is also organised for players who will be in camp from 10am to 2.30pm daily. The cost is e20 and more information is available from Camogie Development Officer Patrice Diggin on 087 0534766. SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES 13th with teams of 4 costing e100. Tee times are available by ringing the clubhouse on 066 7133555. Churchgate Collection: Kerry camogie wishes to thank everyone who supported the recent Church gate collection. Fixture: In the Liberty Insurance Premier Junior Championship Kerry will play Limerick this Sunday at 2pm in Kilmallock. TRALEE PLAYERS ON KERRY TEAM IN NATIONAL PITCH AND PUT FINALS: Last weekend the National Stroke-Play Finals were held in Tullamore, Co. Offaly with Kerry having five players in the Junior grade. Tralee were represented by Roger Guthrie and Padraig Hobbert, Killarney’s John O’Brien and Hugh O’Sullivan with Castleisland’s Timmy Looney. Padraig Hobbert put in a brilliant performance shooting 5 under to make the final round and only 3 shots off the lead. His final round of 2 under saw him take 5th place overall. There was no player in the Intermediate from the Tralee Pitch and Putt club. In this section Castleisland’s James Dignan led the Kerry challenge taking 5th overall with Aidan O’Connor in 11th. On Sunday it was the turn of the Seniors and here the Tralee duo of Tony Blake and Steven Conway were amongst the 80 players who teed off. However they did not make the final where Killarney’s Damien Fleming fought back from 20th to finish 4th shooting 12 under in the final round! Bruff Co.Limerick player Liam O’Donovan was in unstoppable form shooting rounds of 9,13 and 10 under to finish on a championship record of 32 under par, 7 shots clear of the field. RANDLES BROS / TERRACE TALK NOMINEES FOR JULY ANNOUNCED: The 3 nominees for the Randles Brothers / Terrace Talk Sport Star of the Month for July has been announced and once again its shows the versatility of Kerry sport. The Kerry u16 girls romped to another All Ireland football championship win, making it back to back titles. They were unplayable during their run to the final against Dublin in what was expected to be a close final. However it was over before half time and in the end Kerry won by a large margin. This was a real squad effort combined with an astute backroom team and they are well deserving of their nomination. Co-driver Paul Nagle was victorious in Rally Finland alongside Dungannon’s Kris Meeke. The Rally, dubbed the Rally of a Thousand Lakes, is one every crew wants to win and the duo did it by leading from almost start to finish. While their main focus this year is to develop their Citroen for a full tilt at the championship in 2017 this is their second win from a restricted programme making them one of the top rally crews in the world at the moment. South Kerry Adam King competes in the Hammer and following last week’s u20 World Championships he is 11th in the world and at the event in Poland he twice broke the Irish record increasing it to 70m70. Adam says there is more to come from him as he moves into the u23’s next year and is odds on to be an Olympian in 4 years. Voting is open on Facebook and all you have to do is vote for your favourite with the winner being announced on Terrace Talk in the coming weeks.
CLUBS COME TOGETHER OUT OF THE WATER: The Tralee Bay Swimming Club and the Tralee Triathlon Club are joining forces for their Awards Night. The Meadowlands Hotel will be the venue for the big night of celebrations with the dinner and awards followed by dancing to A Beautiful Noise. Tickets are now on sale from Committee Members. The track are now looking for entries for the Bracker O’Regan Memorial A3 current tri distance over 525, 550 and 570 yards and who have raced at least three times at the Tralee Track which starts on Saturday, August 13th. TRALEE’S LACEY SUIR IS THE TOP KERRY RIDER: The Suir Valley Three Day saw an international field take to the roads around Clonmel with a large number of Kerry riders in the field. Sean Lacey, Team Aqua Blue A, was the top Kerry rider in the overall classification taking 20th spot helping his team to 6th overall. The highlight from a Kerry point of view was the win in the second stage by Richard Maes, Killarney Cycling Club. He had been a doubt to start the stage complaining of flu-like symptoms but coming into the final kilometre he was involved in a sprint finish. The stage was raced at high speeds and there were a number of riders still involved but Maes kept just ahead of the bunch, winning by less than half a wheel from Ed Clemens (Ed Spirit Bikes Race Team) and Ryan Fintan from the Nicolas Roche Performance Team. Maes followed up his Stage win and was the next up finishing 22nd of the 146 finishers and also was eight in the Points Classification. His Killarney Cycling Club A team were 8th in the Team Classification. His Killarney A teammate Eoin O’Connell was 31st while Cathal Moynihan was the first Tralee Manor West iBike rider in 40th place. Roy Madden from Moda Kingdom Endurance took 49th overall followed by Cormac Daly (Tralee Manor West iBike) who was inside the top 60, taking 58th. Other Kerry finishers in order were Brian Canty and Michael Murphy (Killarney CC ‘B’), Leigh Hewerdine and Conor Kissane (Killarney CC ‘A’), Paul Horgan and Ciaran Slattery (Manor West iBike), John Blackwell (Killarney CC ‘A’), Chris McCann (Killarney CC ‘B’), Jerry McCarthy (Manor West iBike B). The race was won by Stephen Williams from the JLT Condor team. TOM’S DOES WELL IN DONEGAL: Tom Moriarty’s performance in Donegal was the stand-out one from a number of very good rides by Kerry cyclists. In the 4 Stage International Youth Tour he was 10th. He was 3rd in the Time Trial, 2nd on the next stage and was the first Irishman home on all three stages. In the
Criterion Tom was finished in 6th place. This gave the Castlegregory 2nd Overall and the first Irish rider home. Tom rode with Kanturk who took 2nd place in the Team Price. Other Kerry riders who took part in Donegal were Kieran Coggins, Jake Deering, Robbie Scott, Tom Connor, Thomas Dore, David Fitzgerald, Fergal Murphy, Eoghan Pathwell and Patrick White. Sean Barrett rode very well to help his Irish Youth Academy squad to win the Team Prize. ORAN EXTENDS HIS LEAGUE LEAD: By finishing second in the Lee Strand Tralee hosted round of the Clubs of Kerry Road Race League,Oran Pierse extended his lead at the top of the table. On the night he finished second to his Tralee Manor West iBike team mate George Doyle with Sliabh Luachra’s Donie Kelliher in third place. Tralee Manor West iBike rider took the remaining points on the night with Shane Fleming 4th, Stephen Reidy 5th and Mark Ryatt in 6th. With many of the u16’s in Donegal David Fitzgerald took maximum points in the u16’s. In the u14’s and u16’s races the Galvin brothers from Killarney CC took the wins with the O’Shea’s from Killorglin 2nd. Shane Galvin won the u12’s from Aona O’Shea with Kingdom’s Adam Lenihan and Eoin Hilliard 3rd and 4th. Jack Breen from Currow CC was 5th. Patrick Galvin won the u14’s with Tadgh O’Shea of Currow second followed by Stefan Caulfield Drier from Killarney CC in third. Kanturk CC’s Ronan Leahy was 4th with Kingdom CC‘s Troy Kennedy and Faith Hilliard finishing in 5th and 6th. UNDERAGE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS THURSDAY NIGHT: The Underage County Championships take place this weekend as part of the Kingdom Moda Round of the League. The action takes places in Cordal on Thursday night with sign-on in the Community Centre from 6pm.Racing gets underway at 6.30pm with the u12’s followed by the u146’s at 6.45 and the u14’s at 6.46pn. Tralee Manor West iBike will be expected to dominate the u16 race with the likes of Kierans Coggins, Jake Deering, David Fitzgerald and Robbie Scott the favourites to battle it out for the win. The 14’s favourite will be another man from the same club. Sean Barrett is the man to beat with Patrick Galvin, Tadgh O’Shea, Eoin Maloney and Stefan Caulfield Drier being the ones expected to challenge. Shane Galvin, Aona O’Shea and Adam Lenihan could be from where the winner of the u12’s comes. The seniors race in the League once the underage finish starting at approx. 7.20pm.
