KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!
A Rose of Tralee Quick Story ...from Chris Shortt (Rose Ball DJ for many a year!) I remember meeting Oliver (Hurley ) for the first time in his new role as Operations Manager for the Rose of Tralee. It was upstairs in the Imperial Hotel ...this has to be 20 years ago , We were discussing my upcoming appearance as DJ Entertainer for the Rose Ball , the social highlight of Tralee’s Calendar , I think .and it came up in conversation about how it was so hard to collect money from the business community to support the upcoming Festival that year (and every year !) He was picking my brain as I had been an active member and past President of Tralee Chamber of Commerce and we had similar difficulties when raising funds for other events such as the Christmas lights and Showcase and the St Patricks Day Parade ! I asked him did he recall an April fools day on Radio Kerry one year when it was announced (jokingly) that Fungie had left Dingle Bay and swam up to
Denis Kerins on his First Holy Communion Day Saturday with John Kerins at Our Lady & St Brendan’s Church, Tralee. Photo Joe Hanley. Friday 28st August 2020
his ‘new home in County Clare ...There was uproar on the radio from the people of Dingle that day .and how were they were going to repay their bigger boats and guesthouse extensions with no more Fungie! They had taken Fungies presence for granted ! I asked Oliver what was the correct name that the Rose of Tralee goes under and he replied of course “The Festival Of Kerry “ So I mischievously suggested that imagine how the people of Tralee would feel if it got out to the Press and media that Killarney were making a bid to host next years ‘Festival Of Kerry ‘ ! Imagine the shockwaves ...but also imagine the support that would come forward then ! Oliver smiled ....Of course that didnt happen ...Instead the able team of Mark Sullivan (now Rose Hotel Manager) and Danny Leane took the unenviable task of raising funds each year from the business community and boy were they effective ! The
point was that Dingle may have taken Fungie for granted ! As have we , in Tralee , grown to ...sure why not , its there for over 60 years now ! But alas not this year , no ., Anthony O Gara , Oliver Hurley Des , Sean John Honor, Murt, Eileen and all the hardworking talented team are taking an enforced sabbatical in 2020 ! But just like the business community was on its own enforced sabbatical earlier this year with huge doubts over whether they would and could reopen , most of them have now , albeit operating in a lower gear ...with a few sectors still in limbo , hopefully this will change too. So Yes , the Festival will be back Please God next year ,and the team will return refreshed and full of vigour , with Oliver overflowing with new ideas that came to him during his ‘break ‘! And I already know the song I’m going to play if Oliver asks me back for the next Rose Ball , why ‘I will Survive ‘ by Gloria
Ryan McCord (Leed United supporter) been coached by Danny Diggins (Leeds United Supporter) at the Park Annual Summer Soccer Camp at Christy Leahy Park, Coodogarts, Tralee on Wednesday. Photo Joe Hanley
Gaynor of course ! Chris Shortt , (Delighted and Honoured to have entertained in the Dome for many years , My memories include The Brandon Conference centre , while the Dome was on pause ! The great Carlow Rose supporters , Mickey Harte singing ‘We’ve got the World tonight ‘ on stage with me , Tim Landers dancing on the Brandon Stage , When Oliver got the Dome back , what a night! Fenit RNLI Lifeboat guides dolphin out of shallow water to safety!
The volunteer crew of Fenit RNLI were involved in one of their more unusual launches last evening when a dolphin was spotted perhaps what was too close for comfort to the shore. Just after 8pm on Tuesday night a dolphin was noticed by a large number of locals and visitors enjoying an evening stroll in what was a fairly blustery evening on Fenit Pier. Fenit Pier has experienced an increase in visitors who got more than they were expecting on their evening constitutional. Members of the crew were also on the pier at the time and had made preparations to launch if required. The RNLI made contact with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group to seek it’s guidance on the situation. The advice given was to encourage the dolphin into deeper water
if possible. Luckily, there was a second member of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group on holiday in the area and was present to reaffirm his agreement with the original advice. The Fenit Inshore Lifeboat was launched and headed towards the dolphin. A number of local sea vessels were in the sea at the same time and a joint effort was made to gently steer the dolphin in the direction of the deeper sea. The operation took some time and a large crowd of onlookers had gathered at various ports to experience the unusual event. As the efforts made by many people drew to a close some time later it was hoped that the dolphin had returned to deeper waters. Jackie Murphy, Fenit Lifeboat

Press Officer commented that “this is an opportunity to remember that the lifeboat crews are volunteers and this is one of the rare occasions where the Fenit RNLI experience saving an animal as opposed to some of the very
serious calls the crew respond to”. For more advice on how to float and other water safety advice visit RespectTheWater. com

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!
Bleak Winter Ahead For Kerry Airport KERRY Airport is preparing to face into a bleak winter as the Covid-19 pandemic shows no sign of abating and the resulting restrictions on travel and gatherings continue to affect airline bookings. Ryanair have removed the Manchester and Berlin routes to Kerry from the schedule for September and October, while the Alicante summer route which was due to end in October will not operate after the 31st of August. Only 808 passengers travelled through the airport, all on the Aer Lingus Regional Kerry-Dublin route, during the second quarter of 2020 compared to 102,534 on all routes for the same quarter last year. The grounding of Ryanair flights between Kerry and Berlin, Frankfurt Hahn, London (Luton and Stansted) and Alicante (with increased frequency in June, July & August) throughout the threemonth period was the main
reason for such huge drop in numbers. The new Kerry-Manchester route which was due to commence on the 29th of March did not get off the ground until the travel restrictions were lifted in July and, in normal circumstances, would have contributed to an increase in passenger numbers when comparing figures yearon-year. The CEO at Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “The figures are stark and the future is not bright. The Government has rowed back on the easing of restrictions at the same time as Ryanair announced a 20% reduction in flights in the autumn – affecting travel between Kerry and Manchester, Berlin and Alicante. We are expecting to see further cuts to schedules as the winter months draw near. The devastating impact of the lockdown has been seen in the quarterly passenger figures across the entire
aviation sector and we expect to see many more months, if not years, of toil ahead to recover fully.” Meanwhile, Kerry Airport Ireland has introduced enhanced measures to protect staff and passengers who are passing through the airport. Passengers must wear a face mask on entering the terminal and throughout their journey through the airport and on the
aircraft. Now more than ever, passengers must arrive in plenty of time for their flight and anyone not flying, when possible, should not enter the terminal. For up-to-the-minute information on flights to and from Kerry Airport, visit www. KerryAirport.ie and follow us on social media.
Less than half of Kerry adults will get the Flu vaccine This Winter, more so than any other year, it is vital to protect you and those you love against the flu. Research by LloydsPharmacy shows, over three quarters (69%) of Kerry adults claim that the COVID-19 pandemic has made them more aware of the importance of being vaccinated against viruses, such as the flu, with those aged 18-24 (93%) most likely to claim this to be the case. However, just under half (48%) of adults have said that they are planning on getting the flu vaccine this year.
Friday 28st August 2020
LloydsPharmacy is encouraging everyone to book in for their flu vaccination now, but it’s especially important for specific at-risk groups, including those over 65, people with impaired immune systems, those with a BMI over 40, pregnant women, healthcare workers and carers, cancer patients and many more. In addition to the traditional intra-muscular injection this year LloydsPharmacy are providing vaccination for children aged 2 to 18 using an intranasal vaccine. Accessing the flu vaccine is simple, with appointments available to book now in 89 of the LloydsPharmacy pharmacies nationwide. The research shows that since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increase (16%) of people who will visit their local pharmacy for advice. LloydsPharmacy’s highly trained colleagues are always on hand to support their communities and all relevant precautions are in place in their 89 pharmacies making it a safe environment to get your flu vaccination. This year the flu vaccine will only be administered by appointment only. A short questionnaire,
which is available in pharmacy or via lloydspharmacy.ie, is to be filled out in advance of appointments. This is to help minimize the time spent in the pharmacy. As people return to work, school & college over the coming weeks, people across the country need to make a collective effort to minimize the spread of the flu. By having the vaccination this will help support our healthcare system and reduce unnecessary strain on GPs and healthcare facilities over the coming months.

Lovely example of ‘Pay it forward‘... There was a little coffee shop, where two people arrive and approach the counter. “Five coffees please. Two for us and three hanging.” They paid, they took their two coffees and left. I asked the waiter. “What’s this about hanging coffees?””Wait and you’ll see.”Some more people came in. Two girls asked for a coffee each, they paid & left. The following order was for seven
coffees and it was made by three women - ‘three for them and four hanging coffees.’I was left wondering...what is the meaning of the hanging coffees, they leave. Suddenly, a man dressed in worn clothes, who looks like he might be homeless, arrives at the counter and asks sincerely. “Do you have a coffee hanging?”“Yes we do sir”They serve him a coffee.... I got my answer on these famous “
(thanks to Melanie Harty)
HANGING COFFEES” People pay in advance for a coffee that will be served to whoever can’t afford a hot drink. This tradition started in Naples. Amazingly it’s spread throughout the worlds cities and towns. It’s also possible to order not only “hanging coffees” but also a sandwich or a full low cost meal. Make sure to publish this beautiful idea to everyone.
Conor Signs with Sony
Tralee Local, Conor Byrne proudly shared this snap on his Instagram after landing a record deal with Sony Music. Conor, who had moved across the pond to London in January, has been working for years to get to this point. His first single ‘Bloodstream’ has been streamed over 2 million times on Spotify - it came out when he had no team and no record deal! Conor has been big into songwriting for years, up until ‘Bloodstream’ it has mostly been for other Artists. Conor has been working a lot in Berlin & Vienna, doing vocals for a lot of Dance tracks, he clearly has made waves in the music industry so we can’t wait to see what he does next! We at The Tralee Advertiser love to see talented local’s get the recognition they deserve! Massive congratulations to Conor, hard work never goes unnoticed.

Beauty
HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS Hope you’re all having a fab week!
This week I’m doing a ‘Blogging Tips 101’ for any of you thinking about starting your own blog or these points can be applied to starting your own YouTube channel/Instagram page too! 1. BLOG HONESTLY When you blog, always ensure that the subject/topic of the blogpost is in your own opinion & voice. It’s easy to spot when someone is not giving their honest thoughts and opinions on something. Your blog will be a lot more popular if you are honest in things that you blog about. Remember, your thoughts and opinions are your own and they cannot be mimicked, this will make your blog authentic and easier for people to connect with! 2. ONLY BLOG WHEN YOU’RE INSPIRED. If a blogpost is forced it just won’t end well. It won’t be your best quality or enjoyable. There are times that I sit down with the intentions of blogging but for some reason I simply can’t get inspired. When that happens I just don’t blog. There is absolutely no point in writing a half-arsed blog post for the sake of putting something up! Wait until you get inspiration or an idea and let your thoughts flow. 3. POST REGULARLY I know I said above only to blog when you’re inspired and
I stick to that. But if you only post every now and again and leave huge spaces between your post you won’t gain a strong readership. If people don’t think you’re consistent, they are less likely to revisit your blog often. When you’re inspired to blog, write a few blog posts that you can post a day where you’re not up to blogging. We all have those days! 4. USE WORDPRESS/ BLOGSPOT WHEN GETTING STARTED I was lucky that I did a computer course and knew how to go about starting my blog when I wanted to, it really made things easier. If you’re a newbie I recommend either of those sites to get started. They are user friendly and I have used both. I currently use Blogspot and I design my own blog. It takes a bit of getting used to but that’s all the fun of it. 5. MAKE YOUR BLOG YOUR OWN, BE YOURSELF! I cannot stress enough how important this is. You want your blog to be original and not a copy of any other blog. If you copy posts from another blog it’s
not your own and it’s not any bit original. There are thousands of blogs out there so you have to make your blog your own and original. That will make others want to follow and keep up with your blog. Otherwise you’ll be just another blogger and won’t stand out from the crowd. Remember,
blog because you want to, blog because you’re inspired, don’t blog for fame or recognition, your posts won’t come across genuine and you won’t succeed in a strong readership!

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
Hello strong people! I hope you’re all having an amazing week. I’ve been listening to and consuming a lot of content from James Smith (@jamessmithpt) recently.
deficit for fat loss, calorie surplus for gain and maintenance calories to maintain).
I really like his no bs approach to losing fat and the whole fitness industry in general. Some people think he’s rude or find some of what he says offensive but the truth is… he’s trying to get his point across in a world where people idolize skinny teas, quick fix diets and fads. He is so full on with his approach because he has to make noise to be heard. His approach is simple, be more active, track calories (aka calorie
What he says isn’t complicated, it’s very easy to grasp, yet some people still continue to do fads. He’s trying to educate. He doesn’t sell supplements or cookie cutter plans. He has an academy that is affordable and straight forward to use. His aim with the academy is for people to only need to use it for a short time and then they will have the tools themselves.
Anyway, I digress. I mentioned James Smith because one of his teachings is to get your neat up (be more active throughout the day not spend hours on a treadmill). I have been conscious of this and I wanted to ensure that I’m moving enough every day. So to ensure I stay on track I use FitBit Charge 3. I always try to hit over 10,000 steps per day, but I want to aim for 15,000+ for the next few weeks. And the Fitbit is a great way to ensure that I actually know I’m doing this. Now I’m not saying that to be more active you need to buy a fitness tracker, and I know for some people that would not be a good idea mentally. But for me I like it. It keeps me accountable to myself and I’m more mindful to be more active throughout the day. Have a great week folks!

IT’S ONLY A JOKE
COLONEL SANDERS CALLS UP THE POPE
“Your holiness”, he says. “My business is losing money and I need help. I’ll donate 10 million dollars to the Vatican if you change the Lord’s prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken’”. “I’m sorry, Mr. Sanders” the pope replies. “I cannot change the word of God. I wish you good luck with your business.” A month later, Colonel Sanders calls back, even more desperate. “50 million dollars to the Vatican”, he says, “if you change the Lord’s prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken’”. “I’m sorry Mr. Sanders. The word of God is sacred and can’t be changed”, the pope replies. “You’ll have to try something else.” A month later, Colonel Sanders calls back in pure desperation. “Please, your holiness. My sales are in the hole. I’ll donate 100 million dollars to the Vatican if you change the Lord’s prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken’”. The pope sighs and says, “OK, let me get back to you.” He then calls up his bishops and says, “Gentlemen, I have good news and bad news. The good news is, KFC will be donating 100 million dollars to the Vatican.” The bishops erupt in cheers. After quieting down, one asks, “and the bad news?” The pope replies solemnly, “we will be losing the Wonder Bread account”.
JIM’S CAR IS SWERVING ALL OVER THE ROAD SO A COP PULLS HIM OVER
“Step out of the car” says the cop, “I am going to need you to take a breathalyzer test.” “I can’t”, Jim responds “You see I have very bad asthma, that
can set off an attack.” “Alright,” says the cop, “then you’re going to have to take a blood test.” “Can’t do that either,” Jim responds, “I am a hemophiliac, if a wound is opened, I won’t stop bleeding, and I could bleed to death.” “Ok,” the cop answers “then I will need a urine sample.” “Sorry,” says Jim “I also have diabetes, that could push my sugar count really low.” “Fine, so just come on out, and walk a straight line for me.” “Can’t do that either” responds Jim. “Why not?” Demanded the exasperated cop. “Well, because I’m drunk!”
MY GRANDFATHER KILLED 30 GERMAN PLANES DURING WORLD WAR 2 He was easily the worst mechanic the Luftwaffe ever had.
LITTLE JOHNNY SAYS “I’M SORRY I’M LATE, TEACHER, MY DAD GOT BURNED THIS MORNING.”
The teacher says, “Very badly?” and Little Johnny says “Well, they don’t mess about at the crematorium!”

TRALEE DOG CLOCKS RECORD TIME: In all the years since we started I think this is the first time we started the column with a dog story. However we don’t have many world record breaking dogs. But this week we do with Des Grace’s Pestana becoming the first greyhound to break the 29 second barrier for a 550 yards race. Running in Round 2 of the Boylesports Irish Derby Pestana clocked 28.99 and the 9/4 on favourite won by over3 and a half lengths. There are also a number of other Kerry dogs through to the next round so let’s hope the big prize will come back to the county. Racing continues at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this weekend and those looking to go out for a night might consider the Track’s restaurant. With a number of racing dates set to be taken off the track the people of Tralee and the surrounding areas need to support the KGS, especially as like all sports its gate receipts have almost been wiped out. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! I am certainly not going to go into the area of covering GAA games as we are blessed in this county to have many top sports journalists in this sphere. But on this occasion we will just look back a little on a weekend where both Tralee sides narrowly lost out in the Garvey’s Senior County Championship. Both Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahillys were on television. The showing of club games on RTE is certainly one of the positives to come out of this strange year and it does allow fans to see club championship games from counties that they would not have been able to see before. But back to Kerry and everyone was delighted that the Garvey’s Championships were played and everyone understands that it had to be knock-out due to time constraints. However when you are knocked out, narrowly, in the first round any club would be forgiven for wishing it was a normal year with a losers round. And there is no doubt that both teams would have progressed from those first games. In the clash of the Black and Amber it looked like the Dr Crokes had done enough to win the game by 4 or 5 points but huge credit must go to the Stacks and once Kieran Donaghy did what all goal poachers do and was in the right place at the right time to poke the ball home the Stacks fought back for a deserved draw. However the Killarney boys are a little more battle hardened than a Stacks side that certainly has huge potential and that experience saw the Corkes take control in extra time to progress. While the Stacks will be disappointed they will take lots of positives from the game and their season is not over. They have topped their Senior Club Championship Group on scoring difference from Dingle and will meet Kenmare Shamrocks in the final. The Friday 28st August 2020
Kenmare side needed a late late score to knock the Crokes out of a final spot. It should make an interesting final with the Stacks certainly going to be well up to end the season with a major trophy. Kerins O’Rahillys will also be looking back at their 1 point loss to Legion in the Fitzgerald Stadium with some disappointment. This game was always seen as one where there was nothing between the sides and so it proved. Rahillys were third in their Group in the Club championship and so will probably be reviewing the season to see where they need to improve. The reward for the Legion is a game against the St Brendan’s Board side in the quarter finals and this is one again that had Rahillys progressed would have fancied. The three remaining three quarter finals are East Kerry versus St Kierans, Dr Crokes playing surprise packets Templenoe and Mid Kerry facing Kenmare Shamrocks. Hurling Championships also at their latter stages: Staying with County Championships and the Garvey’s Senior Hurling Championship is at semi-final stage with the two games set for the weekend of September 5th and 6th. The pairings are Causeway versus Ballyduff and Abbeydorney taking on Kilmoyley. In the Minor Hurling Championship St Brendan’s defeated Lixnaw and Abbeydorney got the better of Crotta/ Kilmoyley. This Friday, the 28th, St Brendan’s take on Ballyheigue and Abbodorney meet Ballyduff. 3 KERRY PLAYERS ON IRISH U18 BASKETBALL SQUAD: The Irish u18 basketball head coach Paul Kelliher has named a 25 man squad as they continue their build-up to next summer’s European Championships. Tralee brothers Sean and Tim PollmanDaamen are named in the squad having been on part of the 6-strong team that competed in the FIBA u17 European Skills Challenge qualifiers. They play with Mercy Mounthawk and with Ballymac TK Bobcats. Both boys already have 13 Irish caps. The third Kerry player on the extended squad is St Brendan’s Killarney and St Paul’s forward Jamie O’Sullivan. NEWS FROM THE MOTORSPORT WORLD: Firies man and top motorsport engineer Richard Browne is working with Rallycross champion Johan Krisoffersson. The duo enjoyed their second win from three races last weekend in Holjes Sweded. With strong connections to Tralee Lorcan Hanafin is making his name in the sports car world and took his second podium of the season at Oulton Park in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. Kerry’s only Motorcycling Ireland race licence holder North Kerry’s Samantha Martin was back on the bike at the weekend. With Mondelo closed

for racing at the moment she took part in a high-speed track session at Kirkistown in County Down. NO SWIMMING AT THE MOMENT: Due to the excessively heavy rainfall there is no swimming at a number of Kerry beaches including Fenit. The KCC are monitoring this on a daily basis and hopefully for all those in the Tralee Bay Swimming Club they will be back in the water very soon. AUSTIN STACKS JUNIOR NEWS: All the Academy’s will take place again this weekend. The young players enjoyed the visit of Churchill. The u12’s Team 1 defeated Na Gaeil while Team Amber lost out to the same opposition in an 8-a-side game. Team Black had a big win over the same opposition. The u12 players are delighted with their new jerseys sponsored by Ross Jewellers and they were presented to the club by Heather O’Sullivan. The u14 League will begin soon while the u16’s just went down to Ardfert after a great battle. Off the field the club’s Lotto tickets are on sale from the usual outlets and the club is delighted with all the support. PARNELLS NEWS The Seniors were delighted with the win over St Brendan’s in the Intermediate Hurling Championship quarter final where they defeated St Brendan’s 1-25 to 2-10. The first half was an end to end affair with the visitors leading by a point at the break 2-07 to 0-12. Gearoid Doherty was on fire hitting 11 points with 8 from frees. The Minors lined out against a very strong Ballyheigue side who progressed to the Championship semi-finals. The u16’s are in action in midweek while the u14’s put up a great display against Ballyduff going down 1-12 to 4-07 in Phase 2 of the County League. In the 12’s the A’s beat Kenmare while the B’s went down to Causeway. Credit goes to the u10’s and u11’s who lined out with this size and acquitted themselves very well. The u6’s and u8’s welcomed Abbeydorney to Caherslee and the boys enjoyed their game. In the camogie section of the club the Minors, with a big number of u16’s togged out, went down to Causeway. The u16’s took on the same opposition and games against sides as strong as these will certainly bring them on. The u12 Amber side put up a strong showing before going down to Castleisland. The Royals team game against Causeway was called off. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS The club was disappointed with the 1 point loss to the Legion in the Garvey’s Senior County Championship. A few balls that drifted wide At the other end of the age range the Academy are enjoying their Sunday morning outings and will be out again this Sunday. In the Girls section the u12’s are

through to the Shield final having beaten John Mitchels and will meet Annascaul in the decider. The u14’s Division 2 County League got underway with the girls enjoying a high scoring win over Rathmore and then defeated Scartaglin. They narrowly lost out to Abbeydorney in Round 4 and next up they will face Desmonds. In the u16 Girls they went down to Kilcummin in their first defeat of the season. The minors hosted Dingle/ Annascaul and came away with a 0-11 to 1-02 win. The Senior Ladies put in a good effort but found Rathmore B a little too strong. The Ladies will play Ballymac next. In the club Lotto there was no winner from the numbers drawn 1,6,16 and 22 and the next jackpot will be e4,500. ON THE GREENS TRALEE PITCH AND PUTT PLAYERS SWEEP THE BOARDS: The qualifying spots for the National Gents Matchplay were up for grabs this week in Castleisland to see who would join defending champion Deerpark’s Damien Fleming in Larkspur in Tipperary in September. And it was a great night for the Tralee club as they took all 4 spots. Jason O’Regan led home the qualifiers on 11 under for 36 holes followed by Alan Hobbert and Micheal Conway who were one shot back and Darren Goodall’s 7 under was enough to take the 4th spot. This weekend Tralee hosts the u16 County Matchplay on Saturday. For the first time in a number of years there will be a Girls competition as well as the boys 8-12 and 13-15. On Sunday the seniors will be heading to Newmarket for the Gents Strokeplay Qualifiers with 21 spots on offer to the 64 entrants. 10 are for the Juniors who tee off at 8.30am, 7 for the Intermediate who start at 9.20 and the remaining 4 spots are for the seniors who begin their rounds from 12 noon. The County Board and all the players sent their sympathies to the Cregan family on their recent loss. TRALEE GOLF CLUB: At the recent Brian Hennebery Presidents Prize the winner was Joe Rogers on 43 points followed by Mark Gazi and John P O’Brien. The Best Gross was won by Darren P O’Sullivan with Saturday’s prize going to Joe Slattery. Other prizes went to Denis Reen (Past President’s), Student prize to Mark Stephenson, Senior to Michael G Sheehy and the Guest prize Sean O’Keeffe.

Of these, 400 are set to lose their jobs as a result of the forthcoming change in shift patterns.Bob Shankly, human resources director at MINI Oxford, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a substantial impact on customer demand and, like other automotive manufacturers, our volume forecasts for 2020 have had to change accordingly.“We have, therefore, made the difficult decision to adjust our shift patterns at MINI Plant Oxford from October. This will give us the flexibility we need to adapt our production in the short to medium term, according to developments in global markets.“Our decision has been made after close discussion with trade union representatives and we are aware that our plans will have an impact on people during an uncertain and worrying time.Last year, doubt was cast on MINI Oxford’s future when BMW board member Peter Schwarzenbauer told Sky News that the firm may “need to consider” moving MINI production out of the UK after Brexit, as a result of costs incurred from being outside the EU.Schwarzenbauer also told Reuters that a no deal Brexit could result in BMW engine production being moved from the brand’s plant at Hams Hall, Warwickshire to Steyr in Austria. With the Brexit transition period coming to an end on 31 December and no free trade agreement yet having been reached, it remains to be seen whether MINI’s future in Oxford is safe or not.
LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT RANGE BOOSTED BY 2020 UPDATES
Land Rover has revealed an updated Discovery Sport range that’s available to order in the UK now. Similar improvements have also been made to the Discovery Sport’s sister car, the Range Rover Evoque. The Discovery Sport has been updated to include new electrified engine options, new infotainment, and a new cabin filtration system. There’s also a new special edition that verges on performance-SUV territory. New 48-volt mild-hybrid diesels join the range for the first time; the pair, badged D165 and D200, use a new 2.0-litre diesel four-cylinder engine developing 161bhp and 201bhp respectively. Both feature all-wheel drive as standard, but the D165 is equipped with a manual gearbox, while the D200 has an eight-speed automatic. A new special-edition model called Discovery Sport Black also joins the ranks. It’s based on the R-Dynamic S version of the car, but with a dark-tinted makeover inside and out. It also receives a new 286bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo with mildhybrid assistance. Land Rover says the 0-62mph sprint takes 7.4 seconds, while the Discovery Sport’s usual choice of off-road modes remain. Prices for the new Black edition have not been confirmed but expect it to sit towards the very top of the line-up given the level of performance on offer; The Disco Sport’s infotainment technology has been updated from the old Touch Pro system to Land Rover’s latest Pivi technology. The Pivi and Pivi Pro options offer simplified menus and better navigation software as well as Spotify music integration, and owners will also be able to receive over-the-air updates to future-proof their cars’ tech to a degree. Finally, a new, more efficient new cabin air filtration system is included on the latest models that can filter out fine particulates of just 2.5 microns in size. That’s 30 times smaller than the width of human hair.
ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN SILVER BULLET SPECIAL EDITION REVEALED
This is the Rolls-Royce Dawn Silver Bullet: a two seat roadster version of the Dawn convertible that will be limited to just 50 examples worldwide.Announced back in March, the first car has rolled off the production line and is shown in these images for the first time.Said to take inspiration from dramatic roasters from the 1920s, the most obvious change from the existing Dawn is behind the front seats: the rear chairs are replaced with an aero cowling, which mixes the tan-coloured upholstery with a silver central spine. The look is completed with a titanium windbreak featuring a subtle engraving of the car’s profile on the front and “Silver Bullet” when viewed from the rear. The body is finished in a unique “ultra-metallic” paint finish called Brewster Silver, while there’s a darkened finish for the headlights and the trim surround for the front air intake. The wheels are painted dark grey and feature a single silver pinstripe.Inside, the Silver Bullet features open pore carbon fibre trim on the fascia, front face of the rear cowling and on the rear deck surround. The tan-coloured upholstery features quilting on the central transmission tunnel.Power is supplied by a Rolls-Royce twin turbocharged 6.6-litre V12, producing 563bhp and 780Nm of torque. Zero to 62mph, in the regular Dawn, is dispatched in 4.9 seconds. Prices of the ultra-rare Silver Bullet haven’t been disclosed by Rolls-Royce, but with the standard model kicking off at over £250,000, this limited run model is likely to cost significantly more, possibly towards seven-figure territory.
