Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Find my teenagers!!!

Times have changed, and of course, we all want to protect our teenagers and make sure they are safe when they are out . Yes, we can give them advice but they do not always listen. What has been a great help to me is to know where they are. Nearly every teenager has a phone so we can use that to our advantage by locating him or her when they are out. With Apple iPhones all you need is their apple Id and password and make sure location service is switch on. Then go to https://www.icloud.com/#find or if you have an IPhone use the App. If they have, android Phone use their google account then go to https://android.com/find and enter their details. Of course there arepaid Apps out their but this seems to work great for me.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... JERRY KENNELLY RECEIVES THE TK WHITAKER AWARD IN BELFAST One of Ireland’s leading entrepreneurs, Jerry Kennelly, was today presented with the TK Whitaker Award, the highest honour that the Irish Academy of Management (IAM) can bestow. Previous recipients include Denis Brosnan (2014), Margaret Downes (2015) and Dr Martin Naughton (2016).

The pre-eminent body for academics researching management and business in Ireland, the IAM, recognised Kennelly for “his significant contributions to business and the wider community of current and future entrepreneurs in Ireland and beyond”. Raised on photography, design and publishing when born into his parents international wire photo agency business in Kerry, Jerry launched his first business Newsfax in 1981, a news and wirephoto business and transformed it into a digital pre-press centre for worldwide clients. In 1996, having seen the potential impact of digital imaging on publishing and the early web,

Jerry launched Stockbyte, the first European royalty free stock photography business, one of the first three players in this burgeoning new industry. The company eventually operated directly with users throughout the world from its base at the Kerry Technology Park in Tralee as well as 130 partners in 70 countries before being sold to Getty Images for $135 million in 2006. Despite having the potential to retire on the proceeds, Jerry’s entrepreneurial instincts drew him back into his next venture, Tweak – an online platform, which brings agency standard design, photography and copywriting to small businesses throughout the world. In 2016 the company launched a new software-asa-service application to allow businesses edit and share its digital marketing assets efficiently, Tweak Cloud. IAM Chair Prof. Margaret Linehan said,”Jerry Kennelly’s contribution to Irish life is not confined to the realm of business. He has collaborated

the Press Photographers Association of Ireland in documenting the work of the charity GOAL’s work abroad and using those creative images to spread their messages through the media, exhibitions and calendars. With his co-founders he set up Endeavour in 2009, a not-for-profit technology accelerator in Kerry and the 20 participating companies now have a value of in excess of €100m. Seeking to develop classroom participation in entrepreneurship, he and his team founded the Young Entrepreneur Programme in which 5,000 secondary and third level students learned about entrepreneurship and created business plans, meeting some of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs face-to-face. However, Jerry

and his team realised the real potential for scale lay in primary school, where they have concentrated their efforts since 2010 through the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. To date, over 40,000 primary school children in every one of the 32 counties in Ireland have taken part. In 2017, the 13,000 pupils achieved combined sales of €320,000 and shared in the profits of €230,000. We are delighted to award Jerry Kennelly our highest honour, the TK Whitaker Award.”

ORGANISE YOUR OWN ‘TEA BREAK’ FOR SOS (SUICIDE OR SURVIVE) This September, Suicide or Survive (SOS), will once again host its National Tea Break campaign across Ireland. The Irish charity is dedicated to breaking down stigma associated with mental health across the country, through a range of innovative and life changing programmes that provide tips, tools and techniques to allow everyone to take ownership of their own mental health and wellness. Throughout September, Suicide or Survive is inviting people in Kerry and across the nation to start a conversation about mental health, and the easiest way to do this is over a cup of tea! The National Tea Break offers the perfect opportunity to gather friends, family, colleagues and the community together to host a Communi’Tea Break in Kerry, be it at work, in school, local community halls or sport centres, or at your 8

TRALEE ADVERTISER

own kitchen table. As well as raising awareness about mental health, each tea break will raise much-needed funds which will assist Suicide or Survive in continuing its work and programmes. World Suicide Prevention Day is on Sunday, 10th September, and many mental health charities mark this day through different initiatives. Rather than just focusing on one day in the year, SOS aims to make the whole month of September a time to talk about mental health, and so break the stigma which prevents people from seeking help. To take part in the National Tea Break, and host your own Communi’Tea Break in Kerry, simply register and download a pack from www. suicideorsurvive.ie, then all that’s left is to get the community together, pop on the kettle and get chatting. The National Tea Break pack

Friday 1st September 2017

includes everything needed to host a successful tea break. All funds raised will be invested in bringing Suicide or Survives’ unique programmes and services to communities across the nation. SOS was founded by Caroline McGuigan in 2003, born from her own personal experience

of anxiety, depression and suicide attempt, and her road to recovery. To find out more about Suicide or Survive and the upcoming National Tea Break, visit www. suicideorsurvive, or call 1890 577 577 to speak to a SOS representative.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... DIGGIN FAMILY FROM KILLORGLIN HELP TO LAUNCH BATTERIES FOR BARRETSTOWN 1130 tonnes of batteries were recycled in Ireland by ERP in 2016 - 57% of all batteries placed on the market in Ireland - equivalent to over 45 million AA batteries

European Recycling Platform (ERP) Ireland is Powering Positivity at Barretstown in a new three-year initiative, ‘Batteries for Barretstown,’ aimed at increasing awareness of battery recycling and raising much-needed funds for the children’s charity Barretstown. Helping to launch the campaign were the Diggin family from Killorglin: Nina (aged 7), Ava (aged 9), Cora (aged 12) and Alicia (aged 16) with Mum, Emer Diggin. The Powering Positivity partnership hopes to energise consumers in their approach to battery recycling by providing new branded waste battery collection points in Lidl stores nationwide; facilitating increased numbers of batteries

recycled and raising vital funds for Barretstown’s camps for children and families affected by serious illness simultaneously. Batteries can also be recycled free of charge in any retail store selling batteries, in schools, libraries, civic amenity sites or at one of ERP’s free recycling events held across the country and all batteries collected will contribute towards the initiative. Funds raised by ‘Batteries for Barretstown’ will help to Power Positivity by funding the charity’s energy costs over the next three years. ‘Batteries for Barretstown’ will run in ERP’s 8 counties (Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Dublin Fingal, Limerick, Cavan, Clare, and Kerry) and ERP will distribute newly branded little green Batteries for Barretstown recycling boxes across the country to schools, libraries and retail outlets to support the campaign. ‘Batteries for

Barretstown’ will also feature in Lidl stores nationwide from week commencing August 21st, with branded ‘Powering Positivity’ battery collection points in each store Launching the ‘Batteries for Barretstown’ campaign, Barretstown’s CEO Dee Ahearn said: “‘Batteries for Barretstown’ battery recycling campaign is a very exciting project for us and we are thrilled to be

involved in helping to motivate people to become more environmentally aware and to change their battery recycling habits. The commitment to Powering Positivity at Barretstown, is enormously important to us in providing facilities for our campers and for their families, and we are very excited about the positive energy being generated by the campaign.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE LIBRARY INSTALLS NEW SURFBOX PRINT/SCAN/COPY KIOSK Tralee Library has recently installed a new printing, scanning and copying kiosk provided by SurfBox. This allows customers to print or photocopy on a self-service basis while on the go. This development is one of many new SurfBox kiosk installations across the country, operating across a number of shopping centres, public libraries and airports in Ireland, and the service (which also allows customers to print from mobile devices) is frequently used to print documents such as CVs, payslips and boarding passes. Mobile device ownership in Ireland is at a record high, with 86% of Irish consumers owning or having access to a smartphone, and 60% owning/accessing tablets. With desktop computers becoming less of a focal point in Irish lifestyle, this indicates a need for more diverse solutions than the traditional household printer, such as mobile printing services. Commenting on the

installation, SurfBox managing director Thomas Marry stated “With the continued shift towards smartphone technology, the idea of printing at home has become foreign to many households. Our kiosks allow customers to print their documents in many of the most convenient places to them.” SurfBox also operate a number of kiosks across the UK, France and Belgium, and are continually expanding into more locations across the public libraries, travel, hospitality and commercial sectors. The company aims to meet changing customer demands through the development of innovative technologies. The automated service has recently introduced a 3D printing functionality in a selection of its library locations and aims to roll out this facility to further locations in the coming months, where it will prove useful

to students, entrepreneurs, designers/artists and start-up businesses. SurfBox was founded in 2004 by Thomas Marry and Declan Lennon and currently operate from its Head Office in Thomastown, County

Kilkenny. The company has won a number of awards throughout the years, including the Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce award for Best Small Business of the Year in 2008.

REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR BLUE STAR PROGRAMME NOW OPEN TO TRALEE PRIMARY SCHOOLS! The Blue Star Programme is an education initiative for primary schools across Ireland. The idea of the Programme is to foster better understanding and knowledge of Europe and how the EU affects the lives of citizens among Irish primary pupils through classroom projects and activities. Since the first year of the Programme in 2011-2012, Kerry has had 28 primary schools participate and the Blue Star Programme is eager to see that number grow and grow. Since then, the Blue Star Programme has had nearly 750 primary schools in total across the country participate, with every county represented. Primary schools pupils of all ages are challenged to get creative and think about Europe by carrying out projects in relation to four key elements: the History, Geography, Culture and Creativity, and Institutions of the EU. The wider school community 14

TRALEE ADVERTISER

are also encouraged to get involved and contribute to the Programme. Above all, the Blue Star Programme is designed to be as curriculumfriendly as possible for teachers so it can fit in with lesson plans already in place. What is Involved? Primary schools interested in taking part in the Blue Star Programme 2017-2018 can register before Friday 13 October! Friday 1st September 2017

Participating schools will then be asked to submit a short Action Plan to the Blue Star Programme National Coordinator (which has been European Movement Ireland since 2011), outlining the goals they hope to achieve and how they plan to fulfil the Programme requirements. At the end of the year, schools are required to submit a Final Report outlining how each of the key elements were

explored. Schools are also encouraged to host an event for Europe Day on 9 May such as an art exhibition, parade or food fair. Each school’s submission is assessed by the National Coordinator. All schools that successfully complete the Blue Star Programme are awarded Certificates of Achievement signed by the Minister of State for European Affairs and the Executive Director of European Movement Ireland.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... NEXT STOP CORK... THEN USA... AND ONLY €99! Low-cost airline Norwegian will celebrate its 15th birthday this weekend and has launched a special sale giving holidaymakers across the South of Ireland the chance to bag a bargain transatlantic break, direct from Cork to Boston Providence from just €99 one-way. The celebratory fare sale starts today and will last three weeks until September 18th. The sale covers travel from Cork to Boston Providence between October 16th 2017 and March 16th 2018 (see full T&Cs below). •

Passengers can enjoy bargain fares from €99 on Norwegian’s new transatlantic flight direct from Cork with special birthday fares now available at www. norwegian.com/ie Passengers can depart from Cork Airport to Boston Providence three times weekly (until end

of October) and twice weekly (November – March)

Norwegian Chief Commercial Officer Thomas Ramdahl said: “To help celebrate 15 years of affordable flights with Norwegian, we’re delighted to offer holidaymakers further savings on our new transatlantic routes. With low-cost flights to the US east coast, there’s never been a better chance to book an affordable transatlantic trip. We’re very grateful for the loyal support our passengers have shown us over the last 15 years, and we look forward to welcoming them on board for many more years to come.”

Cork Airport’s Managing Director, Niall MacCarthy said: “The new direct route from Cork to Boston Providence has proven to be a major success for Norwegian this summer. As well as the convenience of flying direct

from Cork, passengers from the South of Ireland are falling in love with New England’s charm and heritage. Autumn is the perfect time to sample the best of Boston and the surrounding area’s hearty cuisine, superb culture and hospitality”, he added.

SEPTEMBER IS WORLD ALZHEIMER’S MONTH September is World Alzheimer’s Month. The readers of the Tralee Advertiser might be surprised to learn that Alzheimer’s disease is one of at least 400 different types of dementia. All can be associated with difficulties in memory, thinking and language, problem-solving and carrying out everyday tasks, as well changes in mood and behaviour. People in Ireland have poor knowledge of dementia, which is surprising given that so many of us have been touched by it. One in every two of us knows someone with dementia. Half a million of us live in a family that has been affected by dementia and 180,000 of us have cared for a family member or loved one with the condition. Those who have received a diagnosis, their families and loved ones have told us of the stigma and fear which still surrounds dementia. They speak of feeling isolated within their own communities, of being written out of daily life. 16

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Ireland is renowned for its sense of community. We have always gathered together to support one another in times of difficulty. The Dementia: Understand Together campaign seeks to build on this tradition of ‘meitheal’ by calling on people to ensure that their villages and towns, and their clubs and businesses, are part of communities which support people with dementia and strive to be better places in which to live with dementia. Understand Together aims to get people talking about dementia – to understand what it is and what it isn’t – and to encourage them to see the person behind the disease. We need to build on what people with dementia can still do and the contributions they can still make. Together we can all make a difference. Simply taking a few minutes to chat or calling by for a cuppa, can help alleviate some of the loneliness people with the condition and their carers can experience. If you own a business or are Friday 1st September 2017

part of a club, consider what you can do to become more dementia-inclusive. Find out more by visiting www. understandtogether.ie or Freephone 1800 341 341.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, let’s all stand together with the 55,000 people living with dementia in Ireland and play our part in building a more supportive, inclusive and welcoming society for people with dementia.

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK.

This weekend Electric Picnic festival is on, I love festival makeup but I feel that there’s so many similar ‘festival looks’ out there that it can be hard to do something different. What I like to do is look at lots of different photos and take inspiration from them and not try to directly copy anything. Here’s two looks that I have done recently that you can take inspiration from.

When it comes to festival makeup for me, I find it’s all about colour and glitter. There are no rules, you can literally do whatever you want. I love that. For both of these festival looks I used my Morphe eyeshadow palettes, the 35C & Jaclyn Hill one. You can get these palettes on BeautyBay.com. Festival makeup can be harsh on your skin, so it’s important to implement a good Skincare routine. Here’s my ‘Skincare Star’ of the week! Farsali Rose Gold Elixir - Farsali is a new brand discovery for me. It’s a brand that uses no harsh chemicals. The Rose Gold Elixir is a radiating moisturiser containing rosehip seed oil, vitamin e, 24 karat Gold and a few more oils. It is a moisturising oil that can be used both morning and night, and I love it! You can also use it on your lips before applying matte lipsticks, it keeps your lips from drying out. You can also mix it with your full coverage matte foundation to keep your skin looking hydrated and glowing. You can buy Farsali products online on their website or on Beautybay.

I hope you all have an amazing week!

Rebecca I am taking Makeup Appointments in Tralee now! I still have availability for this weekend! Message me on 0873929778 to make an appointment.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. This week i’m going to be talking all about motivation and motivation for the gym. At some point, everyone suffers with it. And after a Summer of travelling and then The Rose of Tralee, I can definitely say that being motivated hasn’t came easy. Some people will look at people doing well in the gym or life and say ‘I wish I had their motivation’... let me tell you something, these ‘motivated’ people, are not any kind of superhuman, they just have a clear idea of their goals and what they want. When you lack motivation you have two choices, to just float through life, or… to make a conscious effort to get back in the game! You get out of bed whether you want to or not, you go to the gym even if you don’t feel like it, you work hard when you want to chill - THAT IS WHAT ‘MOTIVATED’ PEOPLE DO. The brain is a powerful place. You need to focus on whatever it is you want and then make active decisions everyday to make what you want happen. For example… If you want to get stronger and leaner in the gym - you know what to do. Put in the work at the gym, maybe get a personal trainer, learn how to eat to get the best out of your body. It takes energy to reach your goal, mental emotional and spiritual energy, so you need to put in the work. EVERY DAY. When I feel like I’m lacking motivation there’s a few things I like to do… Write down a list of 3 current goals and how I can start achieving them. 1. Watch motivational speeches on YouTube or listen to a motivational podcast - my personal favourite. 2. Go for a walk on the beach(it’s a luxury not many people have) Nobody is ‘naturally motivated’ just like nobody is ‘a procrastinator’, it’s all about priority and what you prioritise in life. Think about that. It doesn’t matter what happens to you, all that matters is… what are you going to do about it? If you’re lacking motivation in the gym, change up your workouts, focus on a new goal or even change gyms. Personally I find The Brandon Gym so motivating. The energy in there is fantastic, music always pumping, trainers always happy and willing to help.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: STUDENT GRANT APPEALS Question I’ve applied for a student grant to start a college course this year but I didn’t get the grant I was expecting. What can I do? Answer Applications for the Student Grant Scheme are processed by Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI). If you are not happy with the outcome of your application, you can ask SUSI to review the decision if there has been a change in your circumstances or if you think your household income wasn’t assessed correctly. You can also request a review if you think you should get a special rate of grant or if you think there was an error in assessing the distance between your home and college (which affects whether you get an adjacent or non-adjacent rate). You can request a review by using the online form on the website susi.ie. You can also make an appeal to SUSI if you are not happy with your final grant decision or if you request a review and are not satisfied with the outcome. You must make the appeal within 30 days of the original grant decision. This deadline may be extended by a further 30 days if the Appeals Officer accepts that you have reasonable cause. To appeal, you complete the form, available at susi. ie, explaining why you think SUSI applied the rules incorrectly. The Appeals Officer will notify you of the outcome within 30 days.

KELLIHERS Mills

If your appeal is turned down you can submit a further appeal to the independent Student Grants Appeals Board, outlining why you believe the scheme has not been interpreted correctly in your case. When you get the written decision of the SUSI Appeals Officer it will include information on how to submit an appeal to the Student Grants Appeals Board. The Board has 60 days to decide on your appeal and will write to you to let you know its decision. An appeal of this decision on a specific point of law is possible and can be made to the High Court.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A WEALTHY LAWYER WAS RIDING IN HIS LIMOUSINE WHEN HE SAW TWO MEN ALONG THE ROADSIDE EATING GRASS

A wealthy lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, “Why are you eating grass?” “We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.” “Well then, you can come with me to my house and I’ll feed you,” the lawyer said. “But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.” “Bring them along,” the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, “You come with us also.” The second man, in a pitiful voice then said, “But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!” “Bring them all, as well,” the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine. Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.” The lawyer replied, “Glad to do it. You’ll really love my place; the grass is almost a foot high!”

A BLONDE GOES TO HEAVEN

A blonde dies and goes to heaven. There she is met by an Angel and behind the Angel are 100 steps. She is told that each step there will be another Angel who will tell her a funny joke and if she makes it to the end of the 100 steps without laughing she gets into heaven, but if she laughs she starts the 100 steps again. So the blonde goes on the first step, the Angel tells the joke, she doesn’t laugh. Same with the second step, she doesn’t laugh. She makes it past all the steps without laughing. Once in heaven, she starts laughing, God asks her “Why are you laughing” and she says “I just got the first joke”

I can’t see a problem with that’. ‘Trouble is,’ said the man, ‘I live at 95’

TORQUING CARS! NEW ELECTRIC MINI CONCEPT REVEALED

This is the electric MINI concept they will show next month at Frankfurt. The car, based on the 3dr MINI, will be built at the brand’s plant in Cowley, Oxfordshire alongside the rest of the range. However, it will use a new electric drivetrain made in BMW’s e-mobility factories in Bavaria. Range is a predicted 400kms. Back in 2008 they trialled the MINI E, the first all-electric car from the BMW Group. It was driven by motorists in everyday traffic conditions. More than 600 of those cars were made as part of the global research. Backed by that knowledge and insight they made the BMW i3. And then the production model plug-in hybrid MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 came along last spring. Now there’s the MINI Electric Concept which, they claim, remains “quintessentially MINI and sporty”. Small details stand out. Because the electric drive unit doesn’t need much cooling air, the radiator grille is closed for better aerodynamics. The aerodynamic inlays, by the way, are made using a 3D printing process. The front apron’s simulated ‘air intakes’ are also sealed. There are ‘MINI E’ badges at various points. And the concept will have dark-coloured 19in wheels. Finally, the rear of the concept car has no need for exhaust pipes - so there are none. Indo Motoring

THE NEW 200MPH BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT: ‘SPECTACULAR, BEAUTIFUL.

is not lacking ambition with its new Continental GT, launched this evening. If the company genuinely believes its new £150k flagship will come to be the regarded as the “finest grand tourer ever produced”, it will need to better the likes of Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and the newly resurgent Aston Martin. That’s a very big ask. But on paper at least and in the metal, the new Continental is a very potent motorcar. And a very beautiful one too. “Continental” was the nameplate chosen by Bentley’s new owners, Volkswagen, when way back in 2003 it chose to relaunch the brand with an extremely luxurious, extremely heavy and extremely fast grand touring car with something closer to four proper seats than any GT since the original Bentley R-Type Continental of 1952, then the world’s fastest four seater.

SOMERSET FIRM ARIEL ANNOUNCES HYBRID HYPERCAR TO TAKE ON THE ITALIANS

Ariel Motor Company, the faintly potty Somerset-based firm behind the legendary Atom and Nomad, have announced a 1,180bhp hypercar. Codenamed “HIPERCAR”, the planned machine is a series hybrid range extender available in two- or four-wheel-drive. The four-wheel-drive version will have a total drive power of 220kW at each wheel, adding up to 880kW or 1,180bhp.The resultant performance figures are staggering, on paper at least. A 0-60mph time of 2.4 seconds is Veyron-esque but it’s 0-150mph time is a mere 7.8 seconds. That’s roughly how fast a Boeing 737 is going when it starts to take off. This monstrous powertrain is fed by a 42kWh lithium ion liquid-cooled battery, as well as a petrol-powered turbine to generate more electricity. This latter motor runs at 120,000rpm and is capable of generating 35kW.It’s remarkable to have this level of technical detail at such an early stage in the product’s development, especially considering there aren’t any decent photographs of the car yet. “We’re not unveiling final bodywork at this stage and it’s unusual for a car manufacturer to do things this way round,” says Ariel director. Simon Saunders. Ariel began working on this project in 2014 as a feasibility study into adding more production models to Ariel’s repertoire. The first prototypes are expected to be ready this September. Prices have yet to be announced.

CHINESE MARQUE UNVEILS FIRST CAR FOR OUR MARKET

Chinese carmaker Chery, who is coming to Europe in the relatively near future, has released design sketches of its first SUV model for our markets. The concept will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. They say the compact SUV marks the start of their drive for European sales. They will start “within a few years” but under a different name. And the as-yet-unnamed nameplate will sell hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. The company plans new design and R&D facilities in Europe. It has already sold more than 1.2 million vehicles overseas since its foundation in 1997. Indo Motoring 38

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR DAMNED IF YOU DO – DAMNED IF YOU DON’T: At this stage there has been loads written about the defeat by Mayo. But there are just a few things that I want to add. After the first game the cry all over the media in Kerry was beyond was that they needed to shore up their defence. And the way everyone was suggesting to go was to play a sweeper. So if the Kerry management did not do something and were beaten they would be pilloried and when they did make the change but were beaten they still got lots of ‘slack’. Kerry decided to play a sweeper which was alien to them and hard to get right in 7 days. People often forget that a sweeper is more than just putting an extra body back. It’s a specialised position where the person has to be an excellent reader of the game. But they had to give it a go and to do this someone had to be ‘sacrificed ‘and they decided that it was to be James O’Donoghue. I would presume the plan was to be level or just ahead of Mayo after 50 minutes and then spring James and Darren O’Sullivan to run at a tired defence. But as we see this did not work out. It was also forgotten in the buildup to the game that Mayo ran Dublin to a point in the last their last two serious meetings. More was read into Kerry’s League win over Dublin than should have been as in truth the Dubs were not too bothered that they lost that game. Kerry will end this season as League and Munster champions and All Ireland semi-finalists – something that at least 30 other counties would accept in a flash. So I think Kerry should have Eamonn and his management team complete their agreed term of another year, continue to blood new players in the League and early rounds of the Championship and then see where they are come semi-final day next year. Remember the present Championship set-up will never do Kerry any favours. Unless Cork get back to being a serious challenge Kerry will stroll through the games until the All Ireland semi-final and

40

TRALEE ADVERTISER

not being challenged until then will always leave them open to a team of the quality of Mayo. To paraphrase a sports commentator it was good year if not a great year and sometimes we must accept that as our fate! FIXTURES DECIDED: The CCC moved quickly following Kerry’s loss on Sunday and in the Garvey’s Senior County Championship quarter finals the two Tralee sides will be part of a double header in the Austin Stacks Park. First up on September 23rd will be Rahillys versus East Kerry at 4pm while at 5.45pm Austin Stacks take on West Kerry. The semifinals will be on October 7th and the final is on October 22nd. The Senior Football Championship Relegation Round 2 Play-Off between Kilcummin and Kerins O’Rahillys has yet to be confirmed. Should Rahillys qualify for the Senior County final then they will be exempt from the final. In the Junior Premier semi-finals Na Gaeil will take on Firies on September 30th in Castleisland. The Senior Hurling Championship semi-finals will be played as a double header on September 24th with any replay set for Saturday the 30th and the final on October 8th. The Intermediate final is set for the following day. PARNELL’S WIN DR. MANGAN CUP: The Parnell’s U10’s are celebrating winning the Dr. Bill Mangan Memorial tournament defeating Rathmore in the final. The boys qualified for the tournament in Killarney last week and indeed were unlucky not to get two teams through – a good sign that there are enough players to field two competitive teams. After the qualifiers is was onto the final on Saturday played in the unusual but magnificent setting of Muckross House and Gardens. The Tralee boys were down 2-0 to 0-5 at half time but hit a hot scoring streak to notch up 2-04. At the final whistle Parnells were the winners 2-09 to 2-03 proving the further growth and skill level of underage hurling in Tralee. The Friday 1st September 2017

club is delighted for the squad and management on this big win. The club’s u6’s and u8’s really enjoyed their evening of hurling in Caherslee so thanks to all concerned. Development Squads: Parnells players were on duty on a number of Development squads at the weekend so well done to all on their selection and performance on these squads. The club also had a number of girls on the Kerry side in an u14 Inter League tournament in Tipperary. They played Cork, Tipperary, Waterford and Laois. On the boys side the Parnells players were on the Kerry squad that played their final outing of 2017 in Tipperary. On the day Kerry defeated Limerick with Darragh Reen netting a goal and being named later on the team bus as the Most Improved u16 Kerry hurler of the Year. This Saturday the main action is the North Kerry Hurling Board u10 Blitz at Caherslee starting at 10am with the club acting as hosts. This team will travel to Dublin for a major Blitz in two weeks. CAMOGIE NEWS: The u14 girls put in a great days camogie in Tipperary winning 3 of 4 games. The win over Waterford was probably the highlight and this sets the Kerry girls up perfectly for the All Ireland u14 Blitz in Abbotstown on Saturday, September 9th. In Round 2 of the County League Causeway took on Tralee Parnells with defences on top for most of the game. Causeway, while a bit younger, were able to get the vital scores and two second half goals set them up for a 2-02 to 0-00 win. This win sees Causeway go through the group stage unbeaten and will now face Cillard in the final that is fixed for September 23rd. The sides have met twice and Causeway won both games but only be narrow margins so this could be another cracker. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The u6’s, u8’s and u10’s continue training on Sunday mornings and

on Thursday afternoons at the usual times. The u12 are out next Monday in the Central League when they face Laune Rangers. The u13’s were unlucky to go down in the Town League to Ballymac. They also put in some very good performances in the recent Oaklands Daybreak Rose Cup defeating Fr. Casey’s from Abbeyfeale and the St. Thomas Club from Galway in the Group stages before going down to neighbours Na Gaeil in the semifinal. The u14 A’s and B’s completed good Town League wins in Division 1 and Division 3 versus Kerins O’Rahillys and St Pats. The club thanks all those who made the Dancing Through the Decades Dancing with the Stars night such a huge success with the profits going to upgrade the clubs facilities in Connolly Park. Kerry u14’s and u15’s in action: Kerry U14 & U15 Hurling Teams were in Inter-County action on Saturday. The U14 Team travelled to De La Salle GAA Club in Waterford to take part in Tony Forristal/Sonny Walsh Tournament. Their first opponents were the home team and at halftime the Kingdom led 2-4 to 1-7. In the second half Kerry continued to find the Waterford net and pushed into a 4-6 to 1-10 lead. Waterford tried hard to come back but Kerry held on to record a 5-8 to 2-11 win. Clare had defeated Waterford so the winners of the Banner versus the Kingdom would face Limerick in the semi-final. Clare were a much tougher outfit and afforded the Kerry forwards very little space. At halftime the Banner Boys led 0-10 to 0-04. Kerry tried hard in the second half and after a number of goal attempts eventually found the Clare net. However a strong Clare outfit held on to win 1-13 to 1-04. The Kerry U15 Team travelled to The Clare Centre of Excellence at Caherlohan. They faced a very strong Cork outfit in the first game going down to The Rebels by 6 points, 2-4 to 1-13. They recovered well to defeat Limerick the second game by 4-14 to 2-06. They faced Tipperary in the Division 2 Final and won on a score-line of 3-05 to 1-08. ST PATS NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 1,13,14 and 19 and the next jackpot will be e3,600. The draw will be in Skelper Quane’s Bar. Juvenile Academy: The u6’s had a good day’s training with James Riordan being named as the Player of Week. The u8’s and u10’s also trained well with a number of outstanding performances. The u12 Girls defeated Austin Stacks B in the Town League in a

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER home game winning 5-08 to 2-10. The u12 Mixed team were well beaten by Na Gaeil 5-13 to 1-07. They have a bye this week so will train as normal. U16: We will be competing in Div. 1 of the Tralee Town Board League and are grouped with Austin Stacks, Na Gaeil, Kerins O’Rahillys and Ardfert. The competition will begin on Wednesday, 6th of September with our first game away to Austin Stacks at 6.30pm. We wish Luke, James, Eoin and the panel the best of luck in this competition. Seniors: With Kerry’s exit from the All-Ireland last Saturday, our senior’s Round 11 Division 2 of the Senior Football League match away to Kenmare Shamrocks has been fixed for Sunday, 3rd September at 1.30pm. This is a must win game for us and we hope that other results go our way to have a chance at qualifying for a relegation playoff. Please come and support the team. Senior B: The Senior B team started off their Barrett Cup campaign with a 3-13 to 2-12 win over An Ghaeltacht. David Kerins, Liam Poff and Brian Murphy got the goals. This victory sees us through to the quarter-finals, which will be played on Saturday the 9th, September where we will be playing at home to Clounmacon with a throw-in time of 4.30pm. BALLYMAC NEWS: The Seniors County League Final against Ballymac has now been fixed for Sunday September 3rd. The team has already secured promotion and will look to end the season on another high. The game takes place in Ballymac at 1.30pm. Lotto: There was no winner of the numbers drawn 15,16,19 and 27 with the next jackpot being e2,500. In the Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz the boys kicked off against Milltow/Castlemaine winning 2-08 to 1-03. They then went down to Firies 3-01 to 1-05. They had to win the rest of their games and were big winners over Newmarket and also won their next game. In their last Round Robin game the boys also defeated Listry 4-07 to 0-05 thus qualifying for the final. The decider against Kilcummin was on that everyone was eager to see as they were the best 2 teams in action on the day. The boys were 2 points up at half time and after anther cracking half it stayed that way giving Ballymac the win 3-06 to 1-10 leading to joyous celebrations. In the Under 14 Town League it finished Ballymac 3-12 to Na Gaeil’s 4-13. The Eric Mason u12 Memorial Blitz is taking place this Saturday 2nd of September. There are so far 8 teams confirmed to play. First game is due to throw in at 10am with the finals should be due to be

played at 3pm. In the Central Region Division 3 game versus Annascaul/Lispole the team won 5-12 to 3-08. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Strand Road ran Dr Crokes to 4 points in the semi-final of the Molyneaux Cup with the Killarney side winning 0-14 to 1-07. The game was tight early on but a burst of scoring before half time game the Crokes a 2 point lead and they held on in the second half. Charlie Kerins: Fossa failed to field a team in the Cahill Cup on Friday night last and we now take on last year’s winners Skellig Rangers in the quarter finals this Friday night. With Kerry out of the All Ireland the final round of the County League will take place this Sunday with Templenoe the visitors to Strand Road at 1.30pm. Both sides have secured their Division 1 status but this game is important in the build-up to the Championship. Na Gaeil hosted the u8 and u10’s and all the girls enjoyed their visit to their neighbours. Training for all the underage teams continues as usual this week. The u14’s took on John Mitchels, a side they had beaten recently, in the Town League but were behind by 8 at half time. But a great second half saw an amazing turnaround with the boys winning 4-14 to 3-09 in the end. U-16 Boys: The Suits Select sponsored U-16 town league commences on 10th September when they play Ardfert at home. They will have further games against Churchill, Austin Stacks & Na Gaeil. Ladies/ Girls: The Girls defeated Na Gaeil in Round 1 of the Town League and have a bye this week followed by a game against Stacks. The u14’s drew with Churchill in the North Kerry League while the u16’s went down to Na Gaeil in their Town League Round 1 clash. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers 5,16,20 and 24 with the next jackpot being e8,900. 17’S WIN AS 15’S COMPETITIVE BUT STILL LEARNING: For soccer fans in the county having two teams in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland is something to be very proud of. The u17’s are on another of their good runs and with a 2-1 away win in Limerick that have now extended their unbeaten run to 4 games taking 8 points from these. The u15’s played their historic home game at Mounthawk Park against Wexford and things started very brightly with Kerry 2-0 up thanks to a double from Leo Gaxha. However Wexford are probably slightly ahead of Kerry in terms of strength and conditioning and would have known they were in the League a month of two ahead

of Kerry and will have a little more work done. To their credit they turned things around in the second half and won 3-2 ironically the same score as Kerry lost their first game to Cork. However there are huge positives going forward and they will go to Limerick this Saturday (2pm at UL) in good shape. The Kerry u17’s are at home to Wexford on Sunday – also at 2pm. CUP TIME: With the new season about to get underway some important draws have been made. In the FAI U17 Cup Tralee Dynamos have a bye in the first round. Killarney Celtic are the only Kerry side in first round action and they are at home to Shannon Town. Asdee Rovers and Killarney Athletic also have first round byes. In the Schoolboys National Cup Tralee Dynamos are away to Murroe in Limerick in the 12’s first round while the Park are at home to Pallas in Round 2. The Park are away in the 13’s to Ballymackey while Dynamos will be at home. Both Tralee sides are into Round 2 of the 14’s where Dynamos are at home to either Granagh / Nenagh while the Park go to Birdhill. There are local derbies in the 15’s and 16’s. Tralee Dynamos are at home to Killarney Celtic in Round 1 at 15’s while the Park will welcome Mungret Regional to Christy Leahy Park. The two Tralee sides meet each other in the 16’s. The Kerry District League gets underway this weekend with the Schoolboys and Girls League set to start in mid-September. BACK ON THE HARDWOOD: Garvey’s Tralee Tigers look to be in very good shape ahead of the start of the new National League basketball season. Coach Mark Bernsen and big player Goran Pantovic and Dusan Bogdonavic are expected to return. They will go to Cork for their first game when they face C&S UCC Demons. Their first home game will be on September 23rd when they welcome KUBS BC to the Sports Complex with an 8pm tip-off. There is plenty of Kerry interest in Division 1 with Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin joined by newcomers Scott’s St Pauls Killarney. TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB: Round 7 of the World Series of swims by the Tralee Bay Swimming club – the Lighthouse Swim – was scheduled to take place last night, Thursday August 31st. The result will have a big bearing on who is still in contention for the always hotly contested Swimmer of the Year prize. This is wide open this year so the result from this week will be eagerly awaited. The Jeanie Johnston Blennerville to Fenit swim will take place on Sunday September 10th. The club Friday 1st September 2017

is still looking for some kayakers to give a hand with safety on the swim. All proceeds from the swim will go to the RNLI Lifeboat at Fenit and there will be refreshments for all after the swim. 3 NATIONAL TITLES AND 4 YEARS UNBEATEN – TOM’S AT THE TOP: Castlegregory rider Tom Moriarty who competes with the O’Leary Stone Kanturk has completed a remarkable 4 timer at the National Cycling Championships in Carlow. At the weekend, where Kerry’s underage cyclists were winning many medals, Tom firstly won the u15 Road Race. Along with teammate Sean Barett they controlled the race until Moriarty got away to win with Barrett coming home in a bunch finish. He went on to be the fastest u15 in the Time Trial and then won the Crit giving him a clean sweep over the weekend. This result means that Tom has now won for 4 years in a row at 12’s, 13’s, 14’s and 15’s a remarkable achievement in any sport. ALL LOVE AT THE TENNIS CLUB: I think this is our first time covering tennis but we are only too willing to cover every sport if the PRO’s send us the information! At the Tralee Tennis Club on Dan Spring Road the annual Hillbilly Cup saw a great turn out with the weather also cooperating. In the Cup section the Group winners were – Group A: Adam Kavanagh and Malcolm Willis with Tom Walsh and Chris Sun as the runners up. Group B winners were Emily Crowe and Stephen Roche with Adam Mulvihill and Meave K as the runners up. In the Hillbilly Plate Dan and Andrew Fisher won Group A from Alex and Jim Hoare. Group B was taken by Sean Morris and Nuala Finnegan with Conor and Martin Galvin as the riunners up. ON THE GREEN’S – TRALEE GOLF CLUB: In the Exchange with Ceann Sibeal sponsored by the Town House Tralee Darragh Patrick Carmody was the winner on 39 points. Second was Tom Egan with Edmund G Buckley third. Darren O’Sullivan won the Best Gross while the 18+ handicap section was won by Kieran Dinan. In the Ladies section the Singles sponsored by the Tankard Bar and Restaurant was won by Mary O’Donnell from Bernie McGrath and Michelle Moore. The Ladies Exchange with Ceann Sibeal, sponsored by Kerry Petroleum was won by Mary Murphy with Kay McNamara and Barbara Reen. The Best Gross was won by Margaret Hayes.
