Medical Matters ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION (IMPOTENCE) by Dr David Buckley Erectile dysfunction (also known as impotence or ED) is a very common condition, which affects most men at some point in their lives. Up to 50% of men aged 40 - 70 will have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection to have fulfilling sex Although there are many causes for erectile dysfunction the primary cause for over 70% of men is usually a narrowing of the arteries in the penis (which may be caused by high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes as well as other risk factors). Other rate causes include depression, low testosterone (male sex hormone) or some medications and drugs. Although one or two small drinks can relax a man before sex, too much alcohol over a long period of time can damage the nerves leading in the penis which can cause ED; getting drunk can cause “Brewer’s droop”. Once a man has had a problem with trying to get or maintain an erection during sex he will be nervous and apprehensive the next time he tries. This can lead to anxiety and a “fear of failure”. Drugs for ED, as discussed below, can help a man regain his confidence and after a few successful sexual encounters some men may be able to manage to have sex without these ED drugs.

There are many effective treatments for erectile dysfunction such psycho-sexual counselling or prescription tablets such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadafil), Levitra (Vardenafil) and Spedra (avanafil). These tablets work by increasing the blood flow into the penis, helping it stay hard and erect when he gets sexually excited. Other treatment options include injecting medication directly into the penis or using a tiny pellet or creams which is inserted into the urethra (the opening at the end of the penis where urine usually comes). which helps produce and maintain an erection Some men may benefit from testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), vacuum devices or surgical implants. For more information please talk to your GP or one of the doctors or nurses in the new “Tralee Family Planning, Women’s Health and Sexual Health Clinic” in The Ashe Street Clinic. Confidentiality is assured at all times.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Kerry Airport Chairman pays tribute to long-serving Airport Manager, Peter Moore On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff at Kerry Airport, I wish to thank Peter Moore for giving over 30 years of service with Kerry Airport, the majority of that time as Airport Manager. Today Kerry Airport offers scheduled direct flights to Dublin, London-Stansted, London-Luton, Berlin Schönefeld and FrankfurtHahn with additional flights to Alicante & Faro during the Summer, as well as high-value corporate jet traffic. During his time as Airport Manager, Peter has seen passenger numbers grow from 30,000 in the mid-1980s 1990s to 336,000 in 2017, up 3% on

2016. As well as volume on the London Stansted, London Luton and Frankfurt-Hahn routes, the important Irish regional route to Dublin also saw increased demand. More recently, Peter played a major role in the development of the magnificent new-look pre-boarding area in the departures hall which has led to an improved and more pleasant travel experience for outbound passengers. Over the past 30 years, Peter was responsible for the effective delivery of all elements of airport operations within budget, while ensuring that Kerry Airport has remained a major gateway

between Kerry and global commercial and tourism markets.

Kerry Airport has an excellent safety record with thanks largely to Peter’s excellent leadership and communication skills and positive interaction with the Board, staff, airlines, the local residents and passengers. Peter has steered Kerry Airport through some turbulent times in the aviation sector resulting from the threat of global terrorism in the wake of 9/11 and challenges arising from the economic recession of the past 10 years.

A Morning with Angels in Meadowlands

Kerry native Ann O Carroll has moved her successful ‘Morning with Angels ‘ workshop for one weekend from Listowel to Tralee and its taking place on Saturday 29th of September in Meadowlands Hotel . Says Ann, who is a qualified Reiki Practitioner and a Spirit Medium Reader “My main focus is to make people aware

of our angels as we all need them in our day to day lives. My workshop is very uplifting and positive. Sometimes it is important to shut out the outside world. Two hours of my workshop will help with any troubles, fear, anxiety that more and more people struggle with in their daily lives! Angels can help in so many ways in all areas of our

life, there is no aspect of life they can’t deal with. Their main purpose is to love us, and with love comes many different gifts they want us to fulfill our purpose in our lives. Angels are miracle workers so please welcome their help and allow them to be your new role model and guide. They will remove the barriers around your heart and help you align

We are delighted that Peter will continue to work with Kerry Airport to ensure there is a smooth transition once the new General Manager has been appointed.

with your true self, the self that lives and is loved. There is greater support then you know just waiting to help you.” The morning workshop runs from 10-12pm and booking is essential as numbers are limited (Cost €20) Phone Ann 0n 087-1734443

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... New Festival To Showcase Kerry’s Architectural Heritage Kerry’s architectural heritage will be the focus of the inaugural Architecture Kerry festival which takes place later this month. The event, which will showcase and celebrate the best of the county’s architectural heritage, will take place from 28 to 30 September, and will feature talks, free guided tours, exhibitions, workshops and family events.

The aim of the new festival, which is part of the Creative Ireland Programme, is to highlight the wide diversity of the architectural landscape in Kerry and to make some of the best-known sites of architectural significance in the county accessible to all ages. Several public and private buildings across the county will open their doors for free guided tours, Kerry

County Museum and Kerry libraries will host exhibitions and workshops, and a wideranging symposium, ‘New Life in Old Spaces’ will be hosted in the chapel of the former Balloonagh Convent in Tralee. The weekend will also see Tralee Library hosting an exhibition of the winners of the 2018 Irish Architecture Awards and highlight the contribution that Irish architects make to society for everyone’s benefit. The showcase will be opened by the President of the RIAI, David Browne. Kerry architects will also showcase their work throughout the festival. Kerry County Council’s Architectural Conservation Officer, Victoria McCarthy, said the programme of events has something for everyone, even those with a passing interest in architecture: ‘This is an effort to promote and highlight some of our unique and attractive architectural heritage in the county. ‘At a symposium on Friday 28, we will be looking at how we can revitalise our buildings and spaces with a panel of experts and professionals. Throughout Saturday and Sunday, over a dozen buildings around the county will be opening their doors for free guided tours which are suitable for all ages. Bookings should be made with each venue,’ she said.

Among the buildings opening up to the public will be Kerry Group in Tralee, Killarney’s Flesk Castle, Derrynane House and homes in Killorglin, Tarbert, Waterville and Portmagee. The full programme of events is now available on the Kerry County Council website and will be available in council offices and libraries around the county. Architecture Kerry is supported by Kerry County Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with the OPW, the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, the Irish Architecture Foundation and the Heritage Council. The event forms part of the Creative Ireland Programme in Kerry. ‘Creative Ireland is an all-ofgovernment national strategy (2017-2022) which places creativity at the centre of public policy. Architecture as a artform is central to the strategy, relevant to the design principles and creativity required within the heritage and contemporary built environment. This festival, the first of its kind in the county, promises to be a very engaging and informative weekend,’ said Kate Kennelly, Creative Ireland Coordinator in Kerry.

Some very interesting (and useful ) medical information from T.D Michael Healy Rae Are you on a waiting list to have a cataract removed? or a hip /Knee replacement ? On Friday 7th September I organised a bus of 14 patients to go to Belfast to have their cataracts removed and Saturday 8th all 14 were discharged successfully.

to Belfast for as long as I have to and with that, the next bus will be going on the 3rd of November, but it is a poor reflection on this government and more so on the Minister that this is the action required to save elderly people from going blind.

Some of these people had already been waiting for up to 2 years with still no hope of being called in the South. It is a disgrace that we have to resort to such measures.

I cannot commend the hospital staff in Belfast enough for their efficiency on the day we were there and everyone was dealt with swiftly and with no delay and 14 procedures were carried out from 830am to 1pm which is a fantastic service and is a shame that we have to go to Belfast to receive this level of service.

It makes no sense, that we carried 14 people to Belfast as the HSE cannot facilitate them in the South, yet, the HSE will refund them the money, it baffles me. I will continue to bring people

I wish to highlight a few questions people have asked me in the past few weeks 1. Do you need health Insurance to use this service? No 2. Must I pay for this myself? Initially yes but the HSE refund the money once you return home

16

Friday 21st September 2018

afterwards 3. How much does it cost? Cataract operation £1500,Hip/Knee replacement £9850 and the HSE reimburse this amount once you return home 4. 4. What is involved in the trip to belfast on the bus to have my cataract removed? Leave Kerry Saturday Morning and return home on Sunday evening 5. How long will I be waiting to be called for operation? Literally a few weeks as

next Bus organised is Nov 3rd 6. Can I travel up myself to have a cataract removed? Yes this also possible and can be booked direct with the Hospital 7. Is there an overnight stay involved for Cataract removal? Yes but one night in a nearby hotel at your own expense 8. How long will I be in Hospital for knee/hip replacement? 3- 4 nights depending on recovery

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. This week I’m going to talk about my current makeup must haves - I haven’t been wearing that much makeup since moving to Australia (SO strange I know) but when I do paint my face, these are my current GO TO products.

Too Faced - Born This Way Foundation:

NARS - SOFT MATTE COMPLETE CONCEALER: I typically am more of a

WOW. I got this Foundation as a sample from Mecca (its Australia’s answer to Sephora - better than the Sephora here in my opinion). Anyway, ever since first trying this Foundation I have been OBSESSSSSSSSING. It just makes my skin look sooooo flawless, healthy and just, fab. Not suuuuper full coverage but definitely buildable. As with any Foundation I recommend trying a sample first. I got it for $57 so that’s around €35. (Also James Charles swears by this Foundation soooooooo…)

liquid concealer Gal but the salesperson in Mecca gave me a sample of this to try… and oh my god, I think I’m converted. My problem with a cream concealer is that I thought it would go really dry and cakey and crease really badly - but this one did not. At least on my skin anyway. (Which is combination/acne prone/red)

URBAN DECAY ALL NIGHTER SETTING SPRAY: I forgot

how much I’m obsessed with this Setting Spray. It’s literally the best, better than the ridiculously expensive YSL one I got a notion to buy this one time. Buy this - it will change your makeup game, promise.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY AIRBRUSH FLAWLESS FINISH POWDER - I was lucky enough to get this in the Makeup by Mario Masterclass gift bag when I went this one time with Keilidh Mua & The Cloud10 Gals. This Powder really does make my skin look flawless.its worth the splurge and you literally only need the tiniest bit.

So they’re my current makeup obsessions… every product here I 100% recommend.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! Seeing as it’s coming into summer in Sydney I’m veeeerrrrry into trying to burn as much fat as possible before the hot summer arrives! This week I will be talking about my current favourite fat burning exercises to do at the gym.

1

2

Stairmaster - What a workout! Within 10 mins I was literally dripping sweat. The benefits of the stairmaster are as follows: Tone and sculpt your entire lower body. Stair climbing engages every major muscle in your lower body: glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. High repetitions are famous for building lean muscle and burning fat which results in toned and sculpted muscles.

Tabata Kettlebell Swings - It really gets

the heart rate going! You basically swing the 10-15kg kettlebell as fast as you can with proper form for 20 secs and then rest for 10 secs and repeat 8 times. It’s an amazing fat burning addition to any workout.

3

Walking Lunges - I have more of a love/ hate relationship with these. I hate the thought of doing them but I love it when I’m doing them and can feel it all in my lower body. The benefits include improved balance, symmetrical toning, glute toning, improved core stability and they also boost hip flexibility. So basically they’re a fantastic total body workout!

4

Sprints - definitely my

favourite as they get the sweat pumping and the heart rate right up! I sprint for 20/30 seconds and rest for 10 and repeat it as much as possible.

5

The Sauna - In my gym in Sydney there is a sauna in the women’s changing room (v handy) so I’ve been making use of it before and after every gym session. I love the sauna to relax and unwind, also if you’re retaining water weight it’s a great way to sweat it out of you!

Probiotics for Winter Health The use of beneficial bacteria, commonly known as “PROBIOTICS to improve health dates back over a hundred years, but only in the last few decades have probiotics become very popular. They are now widely available and even used clinically to manage a variety of health complaints. Believe it or not we human beings are mostly made of bacteria, in fact the bacteria cells in your body out numbers your own cells 10 to 1. Most of these bacteria are found in your digestive system, where they act as a vital organ much like your liver or brain and influence the health of not just your digestive system but your overall body. Modern lifestyles, including stress, alcohol, antibiotics, poor diet and lack of exercise can cause an imbalance in your bacteria, depleting your good bacteria and allowing the bad bacteria to flourish, which may lead to poor health and sluggish digestion. PROBIOTICS (available in capsule) are good bacteria that help improve the health of your gut. Good bacteria are also important for the development of a healthy immune system and some research has shown that a daily probiotic may help reduce risk of infection. They also help with digestive issues such as irritable bowel which may include loose bowel movements and or constipation, bloating and excessive gas. Children are susceptible of the most commonly asked question include: 1. Can I just eat yoghurt which contains probiotics? Research shows that yoghurts made with probiotics often have very low levels of good bacteria in them and may not help your gut bacteria. They may also contain additives including sugars, artificial sweeteners, flavouring or preservatives.

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

2.

3.

4.

Do probiotics interfere with medication? There are no interactions between probiotics and common medications ( if you are taking immune suppressants you should speak with your GP before taking probiotics.) Can I use them with antibiotics? Yes, just ensure you leave an hour or so between antibiotic and probiotic. Several studies have shown that they may help prevent the negative effect of these medications on your good gut bacteria. Can I take probiotics while pregnant? Probiotics can be used safely while pregnant and may have benefits for both mother and baby; as with all supplements it is best to stick with one formulated for pregnancy.

We know good bacteria are effective in digestive health but it is important to take the one to suit your specific needs. Remember a healthy gut is an essential step towards good health. As always we are happy to advise you, just call in to any of our stores. Until next time, stay healthy.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A ROBBER BREAKS INTO A HOUSE WHERE TWO PEOPLE ARE UP IN THE BEDROOM

IRISH LOBSTERS

The robber ties the man and woman up. He starts looking around the room for valubles. When he doesn’t find any, the robber asks the man “Where’s the good stuff!” The man replies, “I’ll tell you, just untie her and let her go.” Robber: “you love your wife that much huh?” The man: “No, that’s my neighbors wife, mine’s on her way home!”

The day after his wife disappeared in a kayaking accident, a Claddaghduff, Ireland man answered his door to find a grim-faced Constable & one waiting in the front yard. “We’re sorry, Mr. O’Flynn, but we have some information about your dear wife, Maureen” said one of the officers.” “Tell me! Did you find her?” Michael Patrick O’Flynn asked. The constables looked at each other and one said, “We have some bad news, some good news, and some really great news. Which would you like to hear first?”

A WIFE DECIDES TO TAKE HER HUSBAND, DAVE, TO A STRIP CLUB FOR HIS BIRTHDAY.

Fearing the worst, Mr. O’Flynn said, “Give me the bad news first.” The constable said, “I’m sorry to tell you, sir, but early this morning we found your poor wife’s body in the bay.”

They arrive at the club and the doorman says, “Hey, Dave! How ya doin’?” His wife is puzzled and asks if hes been to this club before. “Oh no,” says Dave. “Hes on my bowling team.” When they are seated, a waitress asks Dave if hed like his usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says,”How did she know that you drink Budweiser?” “Shes in the Ladies Bowling League, honey. We share lanes with them.” A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Dave, and says “Hi Davey. Want your usual table dance, big boy?” Daves wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Dave follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. He tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every name in the book. The cabby turns his head and says, “Looks like you picked up a real nag tonight, Dave.

“Lord sufferin’ Jesus and Holy Mother of God!” exclaimed O’Flynn. Swallowing hard, he asked, “What could possibly be the good news?” The constable continued, “When we pulled the late, departed poor Maureen up, she had 12 of the best-looking Atlantic lobsters that you have ever seen clinging to her. Haven’t seen lobsters like that since the 1960’s, and we feel you are entitled to a share in the catch.” Stunned, Mr. O’ Flynn demanded, “Glory be to God, if that’s the good news, then what’s the really great news?” The constable replied, “We’re gonna pull her up again tomorrow.”

TORQUING CARS! ASK EDDIE & GILLIAN...CHANGING MY MAZDA6 I have a 161 Mazda6 diesel (70,000km). I want to trade it in because I have the chance to buy a car through a business, but it would need to be electric to avail of the BIK exemption. I am looking for a car of similar size and would need to handle a 70km commute a day. Alternatively, I am looking to buy a new car myself and would have €15k to spend plus trade-in. What would you recommend please? Gillian: The problem is there are no direct electric counterparts to your Mazda6 yet. There are plug-ins, such as the Passat GTE 1.4 TSi, KIA Niro and the Toyota Prius, but not a full electric. Unless you go smaller and look at full EVs such as the under-€30k Nissan Leaf, Hyundai IONIQ, Renault ZOE, the slightly more expensive VW Golf or the far more expensive BMW i3 or Tesla S, you are not going to get the same size of saloon. If you decide to buy privately with your €30 to €33k budget (depending on condition and trim of your car), then go for a hybrid. The Toyota Prius hybrid might suit. You could get into a brand new 182 or 191 if you wait until January. I would prefer the C-HR for similar money, but it’s an SUV, not a saloon, so I’m not sure if it’s what you like. Eddie: To avail of 0pc BIK, your business car has to be fully electric. Gillian has outlined the alternatives. Yes, they are small compared with what you require but don’t rule out the lower-priced ones. Still, my advice would be to wait, if you can, until early next year. There are a good few EVs being lined up for arrival later this year - though, be warned, many are, and will be, crossover or SUV-type, such as the KIA Niro (which just might suit you). EX-MUHAMMAD ALI ROLLS-ROYCE IS A KNOCKOUT

A1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Convertible with coachwork by Mulliner Park Ward, which was bought new by the boxing legend Muhammad Ali, is coming up for auction on October 8 when it is expected to fetch between £35,600 and £53,400. The immaculate silver example is being sold by Bonhams as part of its annual Zoute sale at Knokke-Heist just outside Zeebrugge in Belgium. The only three-time lineal heavyweight champion was still known as Cassius Clay when he bought the car new in New Jersey, USA for just over £12,000. As punishment for his refusal to join the armed forces, he was stripped of both his boxing licence and passport for nearly five years. In August 1970, the City of Atlanta granted him a licence and in October 1974 he took part in arguably the most famous boxing match of all time, The Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire, in which Ali knocked out previously undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman just before the end of the eighth round to regain the world title. In typical Rolls-Royce style, the maximum power output of the V8 engine was never announced, with the factory merely stating that it was “sufficient”. The car was owned by Ali for several years – he was a known Rolls-Royce enthusiast and owned many during his life – before being purchased by an enthusiast in Holland where the car has remained ever since. It has never been completely restored and is in beautifully original condition – even the optional headrests are still in place.

AUDI E-TRON READY FOR ROAD

AUDI’s first all-electric vehicle, the e-tron, is due here early next year. The SUV was unveiled in San Francisco as production began in Belgium. Powered by two electric motors, it heralds a new generation of all-wheel quattro drive. Maximum power (in ‘boost’ mode) will be 402bhp, and the vehicle can hit 100kmh in under six seconds.Under normal driving conditions, the combined power of the two motors is 350bhp. Audi is claiming a range of 400km, with regenerative braking and deceleration playing key roles in extending the distance between charges. No mention of prices. The e-tron is the first of 12 electric Audis due by 2025.

HONEST JOHN ANSWERS YOUR MOTORING QUERIES WHAT’S THE MOST FUN MODEL TO DRIVE IN THE SKODA RANGE? I realise “Skoda” and “fun to drive” is an oxymoron, but as a Skoda fan - current car a Fabia 1.2 TSI Monte Carlo estate which is due to be traded in next October, what in your opinion is the best “fun to drive” car in the Skoda range? H.K

HJ says The one I liked the most was the Skoda Yeti 1.8 TSI 4x4. Actually handled better than a Golf GTI. Lots of people rate the Fabia 1.9 TDI vRS, but not me. And the Fabia 1.4 TSI Twincharger is a definite no-no. 36

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR GARY AND THE STUDENTS GRADUATE WITH FLYING COLOURS: One of the only truisms about sport is that for all the tough times there will be good time. And for Tralee native Gary O’Neill one of his best days in his soccer career came last weekend. Gary was the captain of UCD who won the SSE League Division 1 title and promotion to the Premier Division with one game to spare. Since Gary moved back from the UK he has been part of the clubs plan to get back to the top level as he told me when I spoke to him after their draw with Finn Harps at the Bowl. “When I was deciding on my next move a few years ago I got a call from Pat Devlin who was the Director of Football with UCD and was very impressed by both the ambitions of the club and the opportunity to study as well as play the game that I love. “In the last few seasons the squad has been made up only of players who are studying in the University. This made for a great bond as we train, play and study together and under the coaching of the highly respected Collie O’Neill we led the League from the third series of games. “And we got the job done on a great night in the Bowl with a huge support and of course we are into the FAI Senior Cup final and are really relishing a crack at Dundalk.” Going back a few steps and Gary who played with Kingdom Boys in Tralee – the club formed by his father Tony that had great underage success. He then moved across the water and had a successful time with Wolves and Port Vale. One of the things that the media has begun to do is not to say that players who come back from the UK “didn’t make it”. Every player who gets a contract with a cross channel club has made it. Some make it over there for longer but some come back to Ireland. It is something that the FAI is much more focused on and Gary’ story in one that should be told to all young players, especially those in the u15 and u17 League of Ireland who have ambitions of moving. He knew the value

38

TRALEE ADVERTISER

of education and got a great opportunity at UCD, one he has grabbed with both hands. Interestingly the scorer on the night Conor Davis, who did hit the net after Gary had gone closest on the stroke of half time, was with Reading for the last four years. Another former unde4rage International like Gary Conor is now looking to secure a place on the UCD Access Programme with the plan of a full time scholarship. It was also a big change to see that the young Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is staying in Dublin to complete his Leaving Cert before moving to Maine Road so the soccer authorities both here and abroad are certainly becoming more player focused with many more opportunities now available that allow a soccer career as well as an education. Kerry players who have completed their Leaving or just about to do it should also look into College and FAS courses that combine both the sport and the learning elements. Back to Gary and I asked the 23 year old if he was looking forward to having a crack at the ‘big boys’ next season. “Of course as what every player wants is to test themselves against the best. I am in talks with UCD to secure my studies for another year and therefore be eligible to play in the League of Ireland Premier Division. “For me soccer was also my game from a very early age when I used go the pitch with my father. Like all careers there have been highlights and lowlights but last weekend’s memories are ones that I will remember for a long time. Promotion is always great, to go up as champions even better and then to captain this wonderful bunch of players is a dream come through. Now we will see if we cause another Cup shock – they knocked out Waterford for the premier division – in the last round. Walking out to play in the Cup final in the Aviva would be a nice play to play the last game of a great season”. LEO’S IN THE LIMELIGHT: Staying with soccer and ex Tralee Dynamos and Kerry League of Ireland player Leo Gaxha was Friday 21st September 2018

back on Irish soil this week. He is in the early months of a three year contract with Sheffield Wednesday. However this week he was pulling on the green of Ireland as the u17’s took on Turkey in two friendly games. Ireland are hosting the UEFA European Championships finals in 2019 and so qualify automatically so for Colin O’Brien and his squad their friendlies will have greater significance than normal. Leo played the full game on Tuesday night with Ireland winning 1-0. The side were due to meet again on Thursday night. It will be great to see Leo on that squad for the Euro’s in Dublin next year. CAPTAIN COOTE: Golf is normally the final part of my column but Michael Coote’s captaincy of Ireland this week means it deserves to get an earlier mention. The vastly experienced Tralee man is in the role at the Seniors Home Internationals that are taking place in Scotland on the Southerness course this week. He has been given the job for three years and brings a wealth of experience to the role where all the players are better than scratch golfers. The seven man team and its non-playing captain brought home a Bronze medal from the Europeans last week and are hoping to go better in this tournament that runs similar to the Ryder Cup. They opened their campaign against Scotland with a 5.5 to 3.5 win while England lead after the first day as they got the better of Wales 6-3. We will bring you the full results next week but it is great to see a Tralee man at the helm of his countries team. 3 MEETS AT THE TRACK: Action this Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium has the Castleisland Tyre Centre A3 525 Yards as the highlights of the nights racing. On Saturday night there is the final of the KGOBA A6 525 yards and on Sunday there is an SIS Meeting starting at 6.36pm. The track is currently taking entries for the Steve Kennedy Memorial A5 confined 525 yards starting on October 5th and the KGBOA confined 525 yards starting on September 29th.

QUINN AND HEALY DON’T FINISH BUT STILL WIN: North Kerry’s Mike Quinn and Tony Healy are the Top Part West Coast Rally Champions despite not finishing last Sunday’ Clare Stages Rally. They also came out on top in Class 14. With the rest of the positions going right down to the wire Kerry drivers Ger O’Brien and Sean Enright just missed out on a podium place finishing 4th and 5th as late entry to the Rally Galway’s Pat Kelly took third behind Limerick’s Ed Synan. Liston and O’Brien had better news in the Classes as they won Class 13. In the Navigators Class John Liston took second place but Kelly’s co-driver Jonathon Kelly just got ahead of Kevin Doherty in third place. BADMINTON AGM IN TRALEE: This is the time of the year when the counties badminton players look forward to as their season is about to get underway. The Kerry Badminton Association hold their AGM tonight Friday at the Grand Hotel in Tralee at 8pm with all those interested in the game invited to attend. With clubs all over the county from Iveragh to Listowel it is unusual that there is no club in Tralee. It is probably too late for this season then maybe next year? KERRY COMES UP 1 RUN SHORT: Kerry will look back on their Cricket Munster Premier Division with mixed memories. They were involved in some great close battles and at the weekend lost out to Cork Harlequins by 1 run. This left the Cork side in equal second behind Limerick with Kerry in fourth place. The Kerry 3rd finished their season with a win over Limerick, their second in a week, to take 3rd place in their Division. TRALEE BAY SWIMMERS TO FIND OUT WHO THE WINNER S ARE: Fresh form their exploits in the water the Tralee Bay Swimming club will celebrate out of the water at their annual Awards Night on Saturday October 20th in the Meadowlands Hotel. With the vagrancies of the weather the organisers did a great job getting in as many swims as possible and in a safe manner. At the Awards the big moment will be the announcement of the Swimmer of the Year, Best Newcomer, Winter Swimmer of the Year plus the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each age group. The event with BBQ and DJ costs e15 per ticket and the committee are taking bookings now. ON THE SOCCER FIELDS: The first weekends of the season has seen some very competitive games and this week Tralee

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Dynamos were very unlucky not to take a point from their visit to Celtic Park. Tony Duggan and Przernek Skrzyczak had the Tralee side level at 2-2 but ex Dynamos player Danny Roche got the winner for Celtic. In other games Classic FC just saw off Killarney Celtic B 4-2, Strand Road went down away to Ballyhar Dynamos 5-3 and Classic B lost out to GC Killarney 2-0. One of the highlights of the weekend was the first win of Manor West FC with the goals coming from Graham O’Leary 2, Colm Gallager and Frank O’Connor. In the 17’s League of Ireland they team had a narrow 1-0 loss away to Galway in their penultimate game of the season. Luck has certainly deserted them as they hit the post and crossbar in this game. They play their last game at home to Cobh Wanderers on September 30th. Mentioning Cobh Ramblers they got past Kerry 15’s 3-1 in St Coleman’s Park in the League Shield. They meet again this Saturday at Mounthawk Park at 3pm. In the Schoolboys section there was no luck for Dynamos in the 12’s or 14’s National Cup but the Park did go through in the 14’s Round 2.In the 16’s Dynamos went out in the cruellest manner going down on penalties after a 4-4 draw. In the League there were wins for Dynamos B over Park in JK Sports 12’s Division 1 and for Park in the Quills Woollen Mills 14’s Premier. The Kerry SchoolGirls League will begin on September 30th with fixtures for the 12’s and 16’s and it will be great to see a St Brendan’s Park Girls team at u16. If any club want to start Girls football then they could play in the u10/11’s Girls Blitz after Christmas or in the Cups if they are not ready for the League yet. Brendan Maunsell from the Park 12’s and Oisin O’Carroll from Dynamos 12’s made the Kerry Schoolboys Team of the Week. PITCH & PUTT NEWS: THERE was no joy for Tralee duo Lisa O’Connor & Tony Blake last Saturday at the National Mixed Foursomes in Lakeside, Templemore as their score of 1up saw them finish well behind the winning score of 15up posted by the winning pair of Dave Towler & Mairead Manning from Cork. This weekend meanwhile sees qualifying for two major events take place. On Saturday, Deerpark will be one of 15 teams bidding to reach the knock-out stages of the National Inter-Club Inter/Junior event when they travel to Collins in Cork for qualifying. The Top 8 will qualifying for the QuarterFinals which will be held in the month of October. Sunday meanwhile sees the Munster Matchplay Qualifiers take place in Castleisland with a 12pm start. A total of 18 players comprising four Seniors, six

Intermediates and eight Juniors will go forward for the Finals the following weekend in Fermoy Co Cork. The event is a dress code competition and will be played as 36 Holes Strokeplay. DAIRE KEANE REACHED HANDBALL DECIDER: Congratulations to Ballymac;s Daire Keane on winning the All Ireland Minor Simi Final comfortably at Ballymac Handball club . He now plays the final in Croke Park on Saturday September 29th. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The u6’s train this Sunday morning at 11am and have a big game against the Legion on September 30th. The u8’s really enjoyed the John Mitchel Blitz with the boys performing very well. This weekend they will be away to Na Gaeil and the following week head to the Legion. The Bracker Regan Leagues continue this week. The u9’s had a great trip to Cork for the Michael O’Leary Memorial Tournament at Glanmire. They beat Nemo Rangers and Bishopstown and then saw off the hosts to add the latest trophy to the Rockies cabinet. The club also had a team in the John Mitchels Blitz. The John Galvin Trophy Competition continues this week. Under 16 training continues on Friday afternoons at 5pm in Connolly Park. The Underage section of the Austin Stacks club sends a big thank you to The Star on his retirement from the Kerry senior set-up. Bit all the young players are looking forward to seeing him lift the Bishop Moynihan Cup in the next few months! PARNELLS NEWS: Well done to the u12’s on their win over Kilmoyley in Division 1 of the County League as they took the spoils in a cracker 7-06 to 6-06. Well done to Tralee Parnells Camogie U10’s girls who showed great skill and determination at blitz kindly hosted by Cillard Saturday morning. There was a fantastic turn out on the morning great to see. The club thanks all those who helped in any way to make the Race Night fundraiser a huge success and a special thanks to Roadbridge for being the nights main sponsor. U8’S/U10’S CAMOGIE: Parnells would like to say a big thanks to Diarmuid of Dynamic strength and conditioning who joined us during the season to help coach our U8’s/U10’s Tralee Parnells Camogie girls. Last Friday night was Diarmuid’s last session but we hope to welcome him back again next season. The u10 boys had a great day out at the Jack

Moriarty Memorial Tournament hosted by Clonlara in Clare. They played some strong teams to reach the C Final where they took on Na Piarsaigh of Limerick going down by 2 points courtesy of a couple of ‘dubious’ decision. But all the players deserve great credit for their performances during the day. Under 14 Camogie: The girls are working hard in the build up to their final League game against Cillard and then the Veronica Stack Memorial Blitz on Saturday week in Killarney. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,19,24 and 29. The next Jackpot will be e2500. Well done to all the under 6’s for their efforts at the weekend. Dylan Passaway was the Most Improved player. The u8’s were in the Annual John Mitchels Blitz playing Firies, Desmonds, Milltown/Castleimaine , the host clubs and Austin Stacks. The u10’s had Stacks, Cordal, Milltown/Castlemaine, Mitchels and Firies in their Group and all the players really enjoyed the Blitz. The 14’s Boys were in the St Brendan’s League action last weekend going down to Churchill in the semi-finals and they then lost to Ballyheigue in the final. The u16’s will begin their Tralee Town Board League this Sunday. The club congratulates St Brendan’s on their win over Mid-Kerry in the County Senior Championship. They will now face Rahillys on the weekend after this with the game set for Saturday night, September 29th at 7.45pm, the second in a double header at Austin Stacks Park following Stacks against Dingle. GARY SCOLLARD MEMORIAL UNDER 15 TOURNAMENT: There is a great line-up for the Gary Scollard memorial Under 15 ten a side tournament that takes place this Saturday September 22nd in John Mitchels GAA complex and Connolly park. Tralee Parnells are the reigning champions and will be hoping for good showing again this year. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 1,10,23 and 26 and the next Jackpot will be e6,400. Congratulations to the clubs U6 Coach Bridget Leen and her team mate Marian Doherty from Ballymacelligott who were honoured with the rest of their 1993 team in Croke Park on Sunday. The team celebrated winning the All Ireland Final 25 years ago. There were 24 players at the u6 Academy and the u10’s had a great day at the John Mitchels Blitz and will play in the Castleisland Blitz in Brosna this Saturday. The u11’s go to Moyvane on Sunday for the Friday 21st September 2018

annual Moyvane Blitz. The u12’s just lost out in the final of the Eric Mason Blitz to Glanmire Gold. The u14’s took on Knock/Brosna/ Duagh for their game in the Castleisland District Final and pulled off a memorable. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The quarter final draw for the Garvey’s County Championships set up a local derby on the Saturday evening against St Brendan’s. The Juniors are at home to Ardfert in the Town League semi-final at Strand Road on Sunday at 1.30. In the Academy the u6’s, u8’s and u10’s go to Laune Rangers this weekend and the u10’s enjoyed the John Mitchels Blitz last Sunday. The u12 A and B teams played in Keel with the A’s going down as did the B’s who conceded two late goals. The u14 Blues team went down to Dingle. The under-age girls teams are training hard and all have some important competitions coming up. The Celebrity Mamas should know the date of their Blitz very soon and continue to train each week. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,13,25 and 31. The clubs Charlie’s Bar Golf Society had an enjoyable outing to Ceann Sibeal with Michael Quirke taking home the prize. The winning team was Tom and Martin Nix and Wayne Guthrie. Anna Keane had the Longest Drive and Mike O’Halloran nearest the pin. ON THE GREEN – CASTLEISLAND: In the Senior’s Competition the winner was Willie Galvin from Mike O’Connor and Jer Lyons. The Mixed Scramble was won by Con Murphy, Cyril Quigley, Tim Geaney and Jer Long from Mary O’Sullivan, Veronica O’Connor, Tom Brennan and Willie Galvin. St. Dominican’s 3rd Order KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FARM ASSIST Question I have a small farm that I work on full-time but the profit margins are very low. I am married with two children. Is there any State support available? Answer Farm Assist is a means-tested social welfare payment for farmers aged between 18 and 66, paid by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP). To qualify, you must satisfy a means test. To qualify for Farm Assist, you must show that your means are below a certain level. Your means include: • Any income that you and your spouse or partner have (including income from farming, other forms of self-employment and from schemes) • Any property that you and your spouse or partner have (except your home) • Other asset(s) that could provide you with an income When you apply for Farm Assist, a social welfare officer visits you to carry out the means test. Different assessment rules apply to different types of income. For farm income, 70% is assessed but there is an annual disregard of €254 for each of your dependent children. (The disregards for your children are applied first and 70% of the balance is assessed.) Your means from all sources are added together to get a total assessed weekly means. If your weekly means are less than the maximum rate of Farm Assist (that is, the maximum amount your family could get if you had no means), you will be paid the difference between your means and the maximum rate. You can apply by filling out form Farm 1 which you can download from welfare.ie. You can also get forms from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office.

Mr Casey is an Independent Candidate and said it was an honour to secure the backing of Kerry County Council as his first nomination. “I am absolutely delighted that Kerry Council have nominated me for this important position.
