Medical Matters FLU (INFLUENZA) VACCINE by Dr Kate Vernon What’s the fuss about flu? Flu is caused by the influenza virus, so antibiotics don’t work. It’s easily spread from person to person. Most healthy people with flu get better after a week, but flu can cause serious problems for the elderly or people with chronic illnesses. In Ireland, thousands of people are hospitalized and hundreds of people die each year from complications of flu.
Are there side effects? Yes – all medications and vaccines may have side effects. However the most common ones from the flu vaccine are mild, such as soreness at the injection site.
Who should get the flu vaccine? • Everyone aged 65 and over • Everyone aged 6 months and older with a long-term health condition such as heart, liver, kidney, neurological or lung disease, diabetes or cancer • Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy; it protects baby up to the first 6 months of life) • People working in healthcare services and carers • Nursing home residents • People in regular contact with pigs, poultry or water fowl
Will it give me flu? No! The vaccine contains a killed virus that cannot give you flu. You may experience some aches, but this doesn’t mean you are getting flu.
Where is the safest place to get the vaccine? Your GP practice is the safest place to get the vaccine. How much does it cost? The flu vaccine is free if you have a medical card. If you don’t, it costs €25 in The Ashe Street Clinic.
Is it safe? Yes! Severe allergic reactions to the flu vaccine are very rare.
I got the flu vaccine last year - do I need it again? Yes! The flu virus strain changes every year, so you need to get it every year! Can I get flu despite getting the vaccine? Occasionally, yes. The flu vaccine doesn’t protect against all strains of flu or the common cold. Also, it takes about 2 weeks to work. Nevertheless, getting the vaccine is the best way to prevent flu. When should I get it? The flu season is from October to April. The 2018/2019 flu vaccine is available now.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Mary O Shea decides she wants to change her name she is not happy with the name her parents originally chose for her and feels that she would like something different. She decides that she wants to be known henceforth as Pandora O Shea and is wondering how difficult it would be to do this. Identity has become a huge issue in Ireland over the past 20 years as the state tie people down to a specific name, address and PPS number to counteract social welfare fraud and ensure tax compliance. Identity is linked to a person’s birth certificate, which sets out a first name and surname. As a result it is quite difficulty to persuade utility providers and banks to use a name other than the one that is on the birth certificate. Therefore the only guaranteed way of changing ones name to whatever one wants be it George Best, Marilyn Monroe or Sean O Chonchur is to do a Deed Poll. This can be done once one is over 18 years of age and it involved signing a form stating what the change of name is and that one wishes to be known from henceforth as the new name and setting out what that is and to ensure the wish is genuine one’s signature must be witnessed on affidavit of a commissioner for oaths or practicing solicitor. It states that one is abandoning the use of the old name. The Deed Poll to ensure it has validity and state acceptance is then enrolled in the High Court Central Office and once it comes out from there with the stamp of enrollment it can be used with ones birth certificate to ensure that all government and private institutions e.g. banks, educational and health establishments and government offices register one’s details in the new name. However statistics in Ireland for change of name by Deed Poll are quite low. They are much higher in the United Kingdom where the celebrity culture has encouraged a multitude of people to change their name by Deed Poll. Celebrities themselves have changed their name e.g. British singer/songwriter Elton John was once Reginald Kenneth Dwight There’s the teenager who recently changed his name to Facebookdotcom Forwardslash-Mountaindew UK to boost his chances of winning a competition. Other new names include Penelope Pitstop, Bacon Double Cheeseburger and Kerry Roses for Poses. The UK Deed Poll has registered in one year 15 new Wayne Rooneys , five Amy Winehouses and 30 Michael Jacksons. Legal Quip: “What’s in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.” William Shakespeare from Romeo and Juliet. The new Kerry manager? The latest from Pat Harnett (Sports reporter) One of the big stories to emerge this week is that Maurice Fitzgerald seems to move into being the favourite to take the top Kerry job. The County Board appointed committee to find a successor have always said that they will bring a package to their meeting on Monday week, October 8th and will then
reveal the name of the manager and his backroom staff to the delegates. Donie Buckley is the constant name that has been linked with all the contenders and if he has agreed to work with Maurice Fitzgerald then it would seem a done deal. Stephen Stack is the other name in the trio. While he not
have Inter County managerial experience he has plenty at the top club level and was a teammate of Fitzgerald. If that is the senior management team then one would expect Jack O’Connor to stay on with the under 20’s and Peter Keane to continue as the minor manager.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... A County - wide Alliance to spearhead Job Creation & Investment All seven Chambers to work together as a strong collective voice for Kerry. In a show of strength and county-wide unity all seven Chamber’s of Commerce in County Kerry have come together to sign an agreement which will see them represent the entire county on Regional and National issues, as well as supporting each other on local business issues. In order to further develop business interests in the county, all seven Chamber’s from Kerry including Dingle, Tralee, Kenmare, Castleisland, Killorglin, Listowel and Killarney met on the 13th of September last in Tralee, to put pen-to-paper on a formal agreement. The seven Chamber’s in Kerry will be collaborating on several key projects which will enhance the entire county, in order to develop greater opportunities for Job Creation, Infrastructure development, funding and Investment into Kerry.
Each Chamber will remain autonomous/independent of each other, as will their individual members, but a crucial element to the agreement will see the ‘Kerry Chambers’ supporting each other on local and regional issues, including combining resources to further support their own individual business member’s interests. This is the first time that all businesses in Kerry will have an opportunity to work closely together through their own local chamber, and will lend a stronger voice for individual businesses. Every sector, industry and area of county Kerry will be represented, with this agreement ensuring greater collaboration. Speaking at the signing of the agreement Stephen Stack of Listowel Community & Business Alliance said “This presents a huge opportunity for the various chambers to learn from and support each other, to provide a stronger
support for businesses in their own areas of Kerry” Paul O’Neill of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce said “Forming this strong alliance between the all Kerry Chambers will help lead to stronger lobbying on behalf of the county to support the various industries in Kerry” Trudi O’Sullivan of Killorglin Chamber Alliance “In order to provide for greater
opportunities in Kerry, a strong unified voice will be crucial, in particular when lobbying for investment into infrastructure in the county” Ken Tobin of Tralee Chamber Alliance “This alliance will enable us to provide a strong counter-balance for investment and job creation in Kerry, as well as supporting the growth of businesses within Kerry”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Big weekend for Tralee clubs on the floor and in the field (by Padraig Harnett, Sports reporter)
There are some vital games this week on both the basketball court and the GAA fields Starting in the Sports Complex on Saturday evening and the eagerly awaited new SuperLeague season gets underway with a mouthwatering Kerry derby between Tralee Warriors and Keanes Supervalu Killorglin the visitors. And Killorglin will certainly be looking to begin life at the basketball top table with a big performance and will being a big crowd. The Warriors will as always
have a huge home support so the atmosphere should be cracking. From the home sides point of view it will be the first real competitive game for new coach Pat Price, who won’t be phased in any way by the big pressure as he has always coached at a high level including on the international front. With Kieran Donaghy stepping down from the Inter County set up he will be available for more of the Warriors games and will again be a vital part of the squad and indeed the whole organisation. However with Stacks in a County Championship quarter final at 6pm it will be interesting to see if he plays a part in this game although knowing him he will want to be involved. So everything is ready for a huge game in the Sports Complex on
Saturday night at 7pm. It should be a cracker but for me it will be a win for the home side. Back to the County Championships and three out of eight teams left is good news for football in the Tralee area. And with the clash of Kerins O’Rahillys and St Brendan’s it means that there will be at least one side form this area in the semi-finals. Both sides have had impressive wins in previous rounds with Rahillys certainly turning heads with their victory over Dr Crokes. St Brendan’, made up of John Mitchels, Na Gaeil, Ardfert and
St Pats have certainly gelled as a Divisional side and their won over Mid Kerry has them labelled as real contenders. The game takes place under the lights at Austin Stack Park this Saturday night throwing in at 7.45pm and with a big crowd in the stadium both sides will be looking to their big name players to pull them through. Wisdom says that the club side will progress but only just in a high-scoring encounter. Before that clash Austin Stacks will look to progress to the last 4 when they face Dingle with a 6pm start.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Tralee Gardai are First Class What an experience for the Kerry College of Education Students this week when Garda Aidan O Mahoney and his colleagues were in the KCFE Clash Campus for their inaugural session with the Pre-Garda Studies Students. This programme is aimed at those who wish to apply to pursue a career with the Gardai Siochana, and what is ultimately unique is the support that the Tralee Division have agreed to provide to KCFE students to ensure the learner will gain a real life insight to what it takes to be a member of the Garda Siochana and the diversification of roles and range of specialisms within the force. Principal Mary Lucey said “students at times are
attracted to the glamorous side of the career portrayed by the media and do not fully realise the depth of the role. By completing this programme, the learner will not only have a knowledge of Criminal Law, Business Law, Legal Practice and Procedures, Health & Safety, Criminology, Conflict Resolution, but will have completed sessions with members of the force and will have visited the Garda College in Templemore and more. They will be in a very advantageous position if they are suitably qualified to apply for Garda College in Templemore.” For any queries regarding this course; email info@kerryfe.ie; call 066-7121741 or check out kerryfe.ie
Community Garda Mary Gardiner , Mary Lucey , Principal KCFE , Aidan O Mahoney and Sean O’Sullivan of the Kerry Garda Division included.
Tralee’s Food Fair is making a name for itself as crowds flock to town over the weekend... The organisers of this year’s Food Festival promised a bigger and better celebration of local food producers and our thriving hospitality industry and the large crowds that flocked to the event certainly agreed that the Festival matched and surpassed all expectations. The opening event on Friday evening was the Festival launch at Alfie’s in the Ashe Hotel where guests indulged in selected wines and tasting plates that were a sign of the quality and diversity that the Festival weekend would deliver at scores of locations, too numerous to mention

individually, around town. The popular Taste Trail was expanded this year with close to thirty eateries offering tantalizing tapas of their tastiest treats, every delight imaginable at a mere €2 per portion: a chance for the restaurants to demonstrate to a wide spectrum of food lovers just how many talented chefs we have in Tralee. Many of the restaurants and hotels were also offering special Festival menus at keen prices for those who chose to dine out. Not to be outdone, many bars and pubs were promoting signature drinks. The street market brought huge crowds to the square where the air was filled with the most mouth-watering aromas. A musical background to all these events was provided by the talented buskers who do so much to enliven our streets-SPOT. This year saw the introduction of the Take 3 experience – three courses in three different restaurants. Our weekly Farmers’ Market held a Harvest Celebration. One of the aims of the Festival was to see more involvement from non-food businesses. The library laid on a Teddy Bears’ Picnic for the tots, Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre hosted a crepe making Friday 28th September 2018
class for slightly older kids, and there was even a Yoga brunch for anyone who had the energy after a hectic food-filled weekend. An array of specialized events were well supported by local businesses. The Bank of Ireland hosted the Food & Family event on Sunday. Hundreds of visitors walked through the branch, stopping off at the many producer stalls dotted around the interior before making their way to the marquee in the car-park where a busy timetable of exciting food-orientated events had been laid on. It’s not every day you get to see a local TD in an apron as he shows off
his culinary skills. Credit where it’s due, Tralee’s fourth Food Festival was a spectacular success and will be difficult to beat though the TCA says to watch this space.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: GETTING MARRIED ABROAD Question My partner and I are planning to get married abroad next year. What do we need to do?

Pizzatime receive a Gem of a letter from Matthew , Nadal and Will last week the ever so popular Pizzatime in the Square received a lovely letter from 3 primary students in Caherleaheen who used the letter to also practice their handwriting ! Their comments included “You have the best Pizza in Town !” and “Matthew likes Pepperoni & Chicken , Nadal and Will like Plain Cheese “ ! Customers for Life , I’d say !
Answer You should contact the civil registration office in the country in which you plan to marry to find out what you need to do. The legal validity of your marriage depends on the laws of the country in which you marry. The legal formalities abroad are usually different to those in Ireland. For example, a church marriage abroad is usually a purely religious ceremony with no legal effect. You may decide to have a civil marriage in Ireland followed by a religious ceremony abroad. Although you must meet the requirements of the country you are marrying in, you are still bound by Irish law in relation to the capacity to marry. For example, if you ordinarily live in Ireland and one or both of you is aged under 18, you must have a Court Exemption Order to marry. If you marry abroad without this, your marriage will not be recognised under Irish law. Marriages that take place outside the State are not normally registered in Ireland. They are usually registered in the country where they take place. Your foreign marriage certificate will usually be accepted for official purposes in Ireland if you need to show evidence that you are married. If the certificate is in a foreign language, you must provide an official translation or a translation from a recognised translation agency. You may require a Certificate of Freedom to Marry to get married in some foreign countries. This may also be called “Certificate de Coutume” or “Certificate of Nulla Osta”. You apply online to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for a Certificate of Freedom to Marry. You should apply at least four months before the date of your marriage. It normally costs €60 per person. However, if you apply 28 days or less before the date of your marriage, the fee rises to €120 per person.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. This week I’m going to talk about how to really go blonde.
I began going lighter with my hair at the beginning of this year (early 2018). At first I just wanted to lighten the brown a little, break up the darkness (but really deep down I wanted to go blonde) - typical! I hadn’t colour treated my hair in over 3 years after chopping it up to a long bob and focusing on my hair being healthy. I knew if I wanted to be blonde I had to do it the right way… SLOWLY! I’m SO dark naturally and I don’t want to damage or break my hair, going blonde is a process! I’m not a Kardashian who can “go blonde overnight” (they don’t) it takes months of preparation and hair treatments on their end to do the “blonde overnight” process that they do. They have personal hairstylists on hand 24hours a day… remember that. I first lightened my brown hair colour twice in Patrick’s The Hair Company before starting a balayage process, this was over the course of 4 months, with frequent hair treatments in between and using salon brand haircare… Redken, Kerastase, Pureology for example. The first picture is my hair at the beginning in January -
After one trip to the hairdressers… The last picture is after my last hair appointment in Patrick’s The Hair Company in April. Bare in mind before I started this process I had not dyed my hair in over 3 years. No home colour. Nothing. I would get regular hair treatments and use salon brand shampoo & conditioner. Since coming to Australia I have got my hair done once, by an Irish girl over here. (Irish hairdressers are one of the most highly trained). I decided I wanted to bring my blonde right up to my roots, and I got an Olaplex treatment for the first time. 24

Friday 28th September 2018
Second trip This is my hair now… It’s taken 8 months to get this colour, and my roots are still a lot darker than the ends. I did not do this overnight, I take care of my hair by using good quality shampoo and conditioner and I use a hair mask at least once a week. I don’t use a lot of heat on my hair and always let it dry naturally. So ladies, trust your hairdressers! Always ask to maintain the health and quality of your hair and trust them when they say lightening your hair too quick will damage it. There’s no point having the colour you want if your hair is all dead and broken now is there?

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week Recently I have been taking more and more notice of people’s(especially women’s) ideas of what is “good for you” and “bad for you”. And it seems many women are still in the mind frame that you need to do lots of cardio, eat no carbs, stop eating after 7pm and all this other nonsense in order to lose weight. As well as marking every single food as “good” or “bad”. Now especially, is the time of year where people lean towards crash/fad diets as it’s coming up to Christmas. What happens then is during and after Christmas, they put all the weight back on, trust me.
No no no noooooo!!!!! Go to any decent personal trainer or gym instructor and they will tell you... 1. Your body needs carbohydrates for energy. 2. Strength training burns more calories for longer. 3. You do not have to eat 6 small meals a day all before 7pm to be ‘healthy’. And yes, I’m no gym goddess. But I have been training properly and eating according to my lifestyle, my goals and my preferences for over a year now and the difference is insane. The real difference between getting fast results by doing a crash diet or getting long term slow and steady results by training and getting your nutrition right is this… If you use a crash diet, yeah you’ll lose weight quickly, but it’s not sustainable so you end up putting it all if not more back on very quickly.
With proper training and nutrition - that means eating foods that are not only nutrient dense, but foods that you also enjoy eating, your body doesn’t feel deprived or lack energy so if you happen to go on a night out at the weekend or go on a holiday for a week, yeah you might be up a pound or two, but that’s normally just water weight that comes off really quickly when you go back to your regular training and nutrition that you can stick to.
I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla!
I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS
My main point is… don’t starve yourself, don’t deprive yourself of good foods that you think are “bad” no food is “bad” on its own. Some foods are more calorie dense than others yes, and over consumption of those foods is not recommended. But you don’t have to eat chicken broccoli and rice all day every day to see results. Side note: any gym supplements that I use You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018
Frankly my dear , I dont give a... Fig!??
Figs are in season right now and if you’re lucky enough to have a tree or a friend who has one, then here is a stunning salad! made with figs .This is one of Nancy Silverton signature dishes originally cooked by Matt Molina at a dinner party...so go on ....enjoy!
GRILLED DANDELION SALAD
WITH PANCETTA-WRAPPED FIGS
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •
24 very thin slices of pancetta (about 1/2 pound) 12 fresh figs, halved lengthwise 6 ounces dandelion greens, tough stems discarded Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling Salt and freshly ground pepper One 1-ounce piece Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese Aged balsamic vinegar, for drizzling
METHOD Light a grill. Wrap a slice of pancetta around each fig half and secure with a toothpick. Grill the figs over medium heat, turning, until the pancetta is crisp all over, about 5 minutes total. Transfer to a work surface and discard the toothpicks. In a bowl, drizzle the dandelion greens with olive oil until lightly coated and toss. Season the greens with salt and pepper. Arrange the greens across the grill grates and cook, turning gently, until lightly charred and wilted, about 1 minute. Transfer the greens to plates and top with the fig halves. Using a vegetable peeler, shave the cheese over the salads. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and serve right away.
FIG JAM INGREDIENTS • • • •
2 pounds green or purple figs, stemmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup water
METHOD
In a large, nonreactive saucepan, toss the fig pieces with the sugar and let stand, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes, until the sugar is mostly dissolved and the figs are juicy. Add the lemon juice and water and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Simmer the fig jam over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is soft and the liquid runs off the side of a spoon in thick, heavy drops, about 20 minutes. Spoon the jam into three 1/2-pint jars, leaving 1/4 inch of space at the top. Close the jars and let cool to room temperature. Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
Notes Variation: Substitute 1/2 cup of white port for the water and add one 4-inch sprig of rosemary with the lemon juice; discard the rosemary before jarring

IT’S ONLY A JOKE AT THE DINNER TABLE ONE NIGHT...
...a father asked his son how his day in school went. “Oh, it was great, Dad! I got a part in the school play.” “Really?” said the father. “Tell me about it.” “Well, I play the part of a man who’s been married 20 years.” The father said, “That’s great, son. And if you do a good job, maybe next time you’ll get a speaking part.”
BACK IN THE DAYS OF THE SOVIET UNION, A JEWISH MAN LIVING IN MOSCOW APPLIES TO MOVE TO ISRAEL. At 3:00 AM there’s banging on his door. It’s the KGB. “You! Jew! You applied to move to Israel?” He nods. “Here in Russia, don’t you have food to eat?” “Yeah, I can’t complain.” “And here in Russia, don’t you have place to live?” “Yeah, yeah, I can’t complain.” “And here in Russia, don’t you have job to work at?” “Yeah, I can’t complain.” “So, Jew, why did you apply to move to Israel?” “Because There I can complain!”

She heard the train stop and her son saying “All of You lazy gits who want off, get off now ‘cos we’re in a hurry! And all of you dumb asses who are getting on, get on now ‘cos we’re going down the tracks” The horrified mother went in and told her son, “We don’t use that kind of language in this house. Now I want you to go to your room and stay there for TWO HOURS. When you come out, you may play with your train, but I want you to use nice language.” Two hours later, the son came out of the bedroom and resumed playing with his train. Soon the train stopped and the mother heard her son say “All passengers who are disembarking the train, please remember to take all of your belongings with you. We thank you for travelling with us today and hope your trip was a pleasant one.” She hears the little boy continue, “For those of you just boarding, we ask you to stow all of your hand luggage under your seat. Remember, there is no smoking on the train. We hope you will have a pleasant and relaxing journey with us today.” As the mother began to smile, the child added... “For those of you who are pi##ed off about the TWO HOUR delay, please see the fat controller in the kitchen.”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! for them on this occasion.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BIG WEEKEND FOR TRALEE CLUBS ON THE FLOOR AND IN THE FIELD: The year might be flying by and for those of us who love Christmas – apologies for those that don’t and are now cursing me for mentioning it – we are entering an exciting time. But the town’s sportspersons are not thinking that far ahead. There are some vital games this week on both the basketball court and the GAA fields and also in Mounthawk. Starting in the Sports Complex and the eagerly awaited new SuperLeague season gets underway with a mouth-watering Kerry derby with Keanes Supervalu Killorglin the visitors. And Killorglin will certainly be looking to begin life at the basketball top table with a big performance and will being a big crowd. The Warriors will as always have a huge home support so the atmosphere should be cracking. From the home sides point of view it will be the first real competitive game for new coach Pat Price, who won’t be phased in any way by the big pressure as he has always coached at a high level including on the international front. He takes over from Mark Bernsen who led the Warriors to a number of trophies and to the top three in the SuperLeague. He has also had to plan with Trae Pemberton and Goran Pantovic both of whom were big players for the team. However Terry O’Brien and those behind Garvey’s Tralee Warriors were very proactive in bringing in Pat early and this has given him plenty of time to have a proper preseason. This Saturday night will see the debuts of Jordan Evans’s who is 6ft5” from Texas and Janis Dumbris who stands at 6ft 11” and come from Latvia. They will have a very strong squad again this year and will be hoping to be there at the business end of the season challenging for SuperLeague honour as well as

hopefully reaching a Cup final and be part of the glamour weekend of the basketball season in January. And Tralee basketball continues to develop some great young talent. This was proved again this week at the Basketball Ireland International Players and Coaches of the Year 2018 that were announced at a special awards ceremony at Gormanston Park, Co. Meath. The International Male Player of the Year award was a joint award, with nothing separating two of Ireland’s stand-out players, Rapolas Buivydas (Ireland Under 16 men) and Darragh O’Sulllivan (Ireland Under 18 men and Ireland Under 18 men’s 3x3). Rapolas made a huge impact in his debut season wearing the green of Ireland and quickly became the player to watch during the FIBA U16 European Championship Division B in Sarajevo. He finished as the tournament’s second highest scorer and leading rebounder with astonishing averages including 21.6 points per game and 12.6 rebounds per game making him the first Irish male to lead the rebounding statistics at a European B Championships. So everything is ready for a huge game in the Sports Complex on Saturday night at 7pm. It should be a cracker but for me it will be a win for the home side. 3 from 8 in the Garvey’s County Senior Championship: Before we look at the Garvey’s County Senior Championship quarter finals one of the big stories to emerge this week is that Maurice Fitzgerald seems to move into being the favourite to take the top Kerry job. The County Board appointed committee to find a successor have always said that they will bring a package to their meeting on Monday week, October 8th and will but the name of the manager and his backroom staff to the delegates. Donie Buckley is the constant name that has been linked with all the contenders and if he has agreed to work with Maurice Fitzgerald then it would seem a done deal. Stephen Stack is the other name in the trio. While he not have Inter County managerial experience he has plenty at the top club level and was a teammate of Fitzgerald. If that is the senior management team then one would expect Jack O’Connor to stay on with the under 20’s and Peter Keane to continue as the minor manager. Friday 28th September 2018
St Brendan’, made up of John Mitchels, Na Gaeil, Ardfert and St Pats have certainly gelled as a Divisional side and their won over Mid Kerry has them labelled as real contenders. The Black and Amber win away at South Kerry was a big one and as they are still involved after knocking out Rathmore it showed how impressive the Tralee side’s win was. Dingle will need to shore up their defence and cannot put all their hopes in Paul Geaney. It does look like the Stacks will have too much for the West Kerry side. This year’s Championships is certainly throwing up some big clashes and with Dr Crokes and Legion coming out of the hat together Killarney fans will be out in force in their colours in the Fitzgerald Stadium On Sunday with a 2pm throw-in. Dr Crokes will certainly be looking to get their title aspirations back on track after their surprise defeat. One wonders whether this is the wrong time for the Legion to meet them but on the other hand as the Crokes the side they were? And the Green and White will be looking to exploit any chink in their opponent’s belief. But really it is hard to look beyond Dr Crokes. East Kerry are many peoples favourites to win the Championship outright but the must knock out South Kerry on Sunday in the second game in Killarney. South Kerry’s tradition in the Championship means the players in the present squad will be well up for this challenge but it does seem that East Kerry will have too much
BILLY DENNEHY NAMED AS THE NEW KERRY SCHOOLBOYS GIRLS ETP DIRECTOR: With the Kerry domestic soccer season in full swing thoughts turn to the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League Inter League competitions and tournaments. The League will enter teams into the Subway Inter League championships, the Kennedy, Gaynor and Galway Cups and its Emerging Talent Programmes are getting underway. The League introduced Billy Dennehy as its new Director to oversee the development of the players and also work on coach education. He will work closely with the League MC to continue to provide the best possible programmes. The League is now accepting expressions of interest from anyone who has the ambition to work with the top young soccer players in the county and beyond. SEASON’S OVER FOR THE 17’S LEAGUE OF IRELAND TEAM: The Kerry 17’s plays their final game of a long League of Ireland season this Sunday at Mounthawk Park. The League of Ireland 15’s, who were involved in a very exciting 1-1 draw with Cobh at the weekend, are away this weekend with at least another game for them while in a busy time for the KSGBL they also have their first Inter League game away to North Tipperary in the 15’s competition. This bunch of 17’s might not have gotten the results they wanted but their commitment to cause and dedication to training has never waned. Right up to the end they have been giving it their all and certainly deserve to end their season on a high. Coaches Darren Aherne, Tim Collins and Billy Dennehy could not have asked for much more from the players. It would be great to see a big crowd at Mounthawk Park on Sunday at 2pm for their final game. And it will give you the chance to see the advances of the second All Weather at the facility which looks great with the carpet going down this week. DISAPPOINTMENT AS TRALEE CELTIC WITHDRAWS FROM THE KDL: The further up the League you go the more difficult is gets and the bigger playing squad you need. Tralee Celtic, the club of which FAI CEO John Delaney was a founding member in the early 80’s, learned this hard lesson at the weekend. They won Denny Premier B last year and while you will survive in the lower leagues with small numbers this would not do in the Premier A. They struggled to get more than 11 players and after a lot of efforts have decided to withdraw from the League. DYNAMOS COME UP JUST SHORT – AGAIN: Tralee Dynamos have put in two very strong performances against Killarney Celtic and Castleisland last weekend without getting the reward their play deserves. In

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Denny Premier B Classic lost out to Camp United by a goal but in Division 1B there B team was well beaten by The Park who in reality are probably too strong for this Division as they continued their comeback to the top flight. In 1B Windmill United drew 1-1 with Camp while Manor West continued their great start to Denny Division 2B seeing off Ballyheigue Athletic 1-0. In the u17’s Tralee Dynamos had a good win over Mastergeeha but the Park went down to Dingle Bay. Looking at the Schoolboys games and Sam Slattery from the Park made the Team of the Week. In the 13’s and 15’s National Cup the Park had good wins but Tralee Dynamos lost out in the 15’s. There was a full series of games in the VITHIT Even ages League with all the details on the League website. THIRD LEVEL FOOTBALL KICKS-OFF: The 2018/19 season for Third Level Football was launched at the FAI National Training Centre on Monday September 24 with sponsors RUSTLERS continuing their promotion of all competitions for the second year. Over 110 teams are set to put down their books and lace up their boots in the upcoming season of the Colleges and Universities Football League. The first ball is set to be kicked on Tuesday 9th October. We will be keeping an eye on the Tralee IT team – if anyone wants to send on their results we will be delighted to give them some coverage. KERRY PLAYERS ON ALL STAR’S SHORT LIST: Congratulations to Aislinn Desmond and Sarah Houlihan who have been named on the Ladies GAA TG 4 All Stars 45 player short list. The 2018 Awards will be announced at a gala banquet at the Citywest Hotel on December 1st. TRACK ENJOYS CCTV UPGRADE AS PART OF IGB PLANS: The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is getting a CCTV upgrade a part of an overall spend of e286,000 by the Irish Greyhound Board. Liam Dowling’s charges have made a very good start to the Dublin Coach Juvenile Derby with Ballymac Anton and Ballymac Beech amongst his qualifiers. Racing at the track this week is on Friday and Saturday night with the action getting underway at 7.42pm and on Sunday evening at 6.58pm. The highlight is on Saturday night with the final of the KGOBA A8 525 yards. The track is currently taking entries for Steve Kennedy Memorial A5 confined 525 yards starting on Friday October 5th plus the Red Mills unraced bitch stake starting on November 9th. LIXNAW PLAN NIGHT AT THE DOGS: The Lixnaw Hurling club are in the middle of a major fundraiser at Hermitage Park. The County Hurling champions are laying a sand carpet and all the ancillary facilities. The total cost is
over e160,000 and along with Sports Capital funding and Life Memberships the club is hosting a Night at the Dogs on October 20th with tickets costing e10 and a e500 prize for the Buster winner. NA GAEIL LADIES ARE COUNTY DIVISION 1CHAMPIONS: Na Gaeil Ladies are the County League Division 1 champions after a 4 point win over Rathmore 4-08 to 1-13. It has been a good week for the Tralee side as they are also the Intermediate Champions. In this final they had most of the work done by half time as they led 2-07 to 0-04 at the short whistle. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The u6’s, u8’s and u10’s are looking forward to welcoming Killarney Legion to Connolly Park this Sunday at 10.30am. On Sunday the boys will travel to the Fr Casey Club in Abbeyfeale. The club’s annual fundraising Cake Sale will take place in the clubhouse this Sunday morning with donations to be dropped off on Saturday or Sunday morning. The John Galvin Trophy competition continues this week. The u16’s had a good win against Ballymac and continue in the Town League Group 1. Bord Thrá Lí has decided to introduce a new ‘zero tolerance’ policy regarding abuse and the use of foul and abusive language towards match officials. This is being done (a) because good behaviour, respect for others and the use of respectful language is the hallmark of a well-reared, mannerly and truly sporting person and (b) so that young people might be encouraged to take up refereeing. Referees are being instructed by the Board to report any form of abuse that they receive or any foul language that is directed towards them during or after a game. Any reports of such shameful acts will be dealt with by the CCCC. The Juvenile section of the club wishes the senior team all the best in the Championship quarter final. PARNELLS NEWS: U14 Boys Win South Kerry Hurling League: The club was delighted with their win over St Pats/ Dr Crokes in the final. There was just one point between the sides at the end with the Tralee side winning due to some heroic defending. Successful Parnells Camogie Autumn Blitz U15-17: Tralee Parnells were delighted to host panels from Causeway, Cillard and Tournafulla at our 9-aside, U15-17 autumn blitz on Saturday September 22 at Caherslee GAA Park, Tralee. All sides enjoyed their three games with Causeway A and Tournafulla B being the winners on the day. Camogie U12 Champions Killarney and Causeway: Well done to both teams with Killarney pulling off an unlikely victory over Crotta. The Parnells girls pushed Causeway all the way but the North Kerry side took the win. Best of luck to GDA Patrice: Patrice Diggin has been appointed the Development Officer for South

AGM: Tralee Parnells Club AGM will take place 8 pm on Friday 16 November 2018. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: All eyes are on the weekend’s Senior Championship quarter final and everyone is behind the team. The Junior team went down to Ardfert in the Tralee Board semifinals losing 2-10 to 1-10. There was lots of action in the Academy with the teams enjoying their trip to Killorglin. The u16’s put up a brave battle before losing out to Na Gaeil in the Town League. Girls: Development training continues this weekend for girls born in 2006. The u13 District competition will begin this weekend with a preliminary round. The u14’s are preparing to take on Moyvane. The u16’s and the Mammas training continues at the normal times. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 15.16.29 and 32. BALLYHEIGUE WIN GARRY SCOLLARD: Ballyheigue won the annual Gary Scollard Memorial Tournament beating Abbeydorney, Ardagh from Limerick and Parnells at Connolly Park. Next up they saw off Ballinhassing before taking on Ardfert in the final. Ballyheigue won it in the end 3-11 to 0-06. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,12,23 and 28 with the next jackpot being e6,600. The u10 Boys are taking part in the Castleisland District u10 Blitz this Saturday in Brosna. The U11 boys took part in the annual Hughie Fitzmaurice memorial blitz last Sunday. Following good performances against Listowel, Ballydonoghue and Kikrush they finished level on points with Emmetts and Kilrush. They went on to win the B final defeating Beale in the process. The club has to teams in the U12 Boys in the Castleisland District finals. The blue team were beaten in the A final by Castleisland desmonds. The gold team won the D final beating John Mitchels by two points. U16 Boys Town League: Ballymac played their first match in the Town League last Sunday. They were defeated 7-14 to 3-14 by a strong Stacks team. Well done to both sides for putting on an exhibition of football.
where there was also a great turnout. The u10’s have a Blitz coming up this Saturday. The u14 Girls had their North Kerry Blitz Plate Final against Annascaul was called off due to Storm Ali. It was due to be played in mid-week. Everybody in the club is getting behind the seniors as they get ready for the weekends County Senior Championship final. Senior Team Management – St Pats are seeking a management team for their seniors for the coming year. If you are interested then apply with a CV to secretary. stpatricksblennerville.kerry@gaa.ie ON THE GREENS – PITCH & PUTT TRALEE PLAYERS TAKE MUNSTER MATCHPLAY SPOTS: In the Munster Matchplay qualifying at Castleisland Tralee Pitch & Putt players Alan Hobbart and Jason O’Regan took places in the senior section. In the Intermediate section the Tralee duo Aidan O’Sullivan and Roger Guthrie qualified while in the Junior competition David Hobbart qualified. All these players will join Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor who will compete in the Junior Ladies grade in the finals this weekend at the Majestic, Mallow and Fermoy clubs. Well done to the Deerpark team from Killarney that topped the Munster section of the National Inter-Club quarter final qualifying stages. These quarter finals will take place on Saturday, October 13th ON THE GOLF COURSE: Firstly I got to give me annual mention to Mr. James D Harnett who had the original idea of the Ryder Cup while working for Golf Illustrated. In September 1920 he suggested that a team of US professionals would come across the water to take part in the British Open in 1921. They took on a UK team on the Monday before the then Open. The Ryder Cup proper began in 1927 with wealthy grain merchant Samuel Ryder sponsoring the now famous Cup. So this weekend we remember James as we view the latest battle on the golf course. TRALEE GOLF COURSE: In Sunday’s Fourball Series 5 Michael Leahy and Paudie Nolan were the winners from Eamon O’Sullivan and Pat O’Donnell. The 9 Hole qualifier was won by Patrick McElligott Snr. In the Ladies the MC 12 Adams Garage Singles stableford went to Brid Halloran from Sandra O’Sullivan with the Best Gross going to Catherine McCarthy. 3rd was Kathleen Finnegan.
ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 11,20, 22 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e2,600. Well done to all the underage players that trained with the Academy. In the u6’s Paddy Flynn impressed. Eddie Hayes was named Player of the Week at u8 level Friday 28th September 2018

TORQUING CARS! GOODWOOD ANNOUNCES 2019 FESTIVAL OF SPEED AND REVIVAL DATES
Barely has Goodwood’s motorsport season ended with the anniversary celebrations of the Festival of Speed (25 years) and most recently the Revival (20 years) than the Duke of Richmond’s team has transported us to these flagship events for 2019. It has been confirmed that the 2019 Festival of Speed will take place from July 4-7, with the historic motor racing feast that is the Revival scheduled for September 13-15. Tickets for the general public go on sale November 5 for both events. Before then, the Goodwood Motor Circuit hosts the 77th Members’ Meeting, which for 2109 has moved back three weeks to take place on April 6-7, following atrocious weather (remember the snow?) at this year’s 76th such event back in March. Despite taking place in April for the first time, the Members’ Meeting retains its place as the traditional curtain-raiser of the historic racing season. As in previous years, tickets are expected to sell out and will once again only be available to Goodwood Road Racing Club (GRRC) members and those who are part of the GRRC Fellowship. Look out for more announcements about the Festival of Speed over the coming months, but expect the usual array of stunning anniversary celebrations, supercar debuts, Formula One, rallying and sports cars - not to mention the tension of the timed shoot-out up the hillclimb on the Sunday afternoon. The Revival Meeting, since 1998 a magical step back in time that recreates and celebrates the circuit’s golden age of racing between the late 1940s and mid-1960s, will once again feature the closest historic racing.
HONEST JOHN ANSWERS YOUR MOTORING QUERIES
REVOLUTION REVELATION
Is the gearing on some diesels too high? Mine runs at 1,500rpm in eighth at 70mph and I have noted that some run at 1,200rpm in top gear at 70mph. I ask because my dealer technician recommends running diesels in ‘sport’ mode, even on a motorway at the legal limit. KR HJ says .....Sensible advice. You don’t want to run a diesel at less than 1,500rpm or it won’t properly regenerate its diesel particulate filter (DPF). My Renault Koleos runs at 2,200rpm at 70mph and I never have any DPF problems.
ALFA GARNET
As an unashamed Alfista, I’m in difficulty. Having driven the marque for many years, through many models, my cherished Spider is probably ready for a change. But what do I choose? The current Alfa range is lacklustre. I like the Fiat 124 Spider, but research dictates I should buy the Mazda MX-5 equivalent. What next? I’d prefer diesel for my 20,000 miles a year. TJ HJ SAYS .....You think the Alfa Giulia and Stelvio are lacklustre? I don’t. If you want a roadster it’s really hard to beat a Mazda MX-5 2.0, which is significantly quicker than the 1.5. The latest Honda Civic 1.6i DTEC might make sense. Otherwise, look at a Mazda3 or CX-3 diesel. And if you treasure steering and handling rather than raw power, consider a Toyota C-HR.
NOT A BRIGHT IDEA
I have purchased a used 2007 VW Golf TSI estate from Japan, but the speedometer is not working and it’s showing ABS, EPC, steering and engine check warnings on the dashboard. How can I disable them? HC H.J ....The lights are there to alert you to problems and you don’t get rid of them by disabling the warning lights. The ABS fault is most likely to be due to failure of the brake pressure sensor in the ATE Teves Mk60 ABS/ESP module. That can be fixed for about £400 by sending it away to www.ecutesting.com. A new module will cost about £1,500.
IS A DIESEL-ENGINED VW GOLF A SAFE BET IN THE LONG TERM?
Fuel for thought My annual mileage is low, so I’m thinking of buying a VW Golf Mk6 that I would like to keep for some time. However, I’m not sure whether to go for a 1.4-litre petrol-engined version or the 1.6-litre TDI diesel. I have been told that diesel engines last longer (up to 200,000 miles) and that the cars are cheaper to tax and maintain, but I’m worried that they may be increasingly persecuted by emissions legislation. Can you enlighten me? PJ HJ says.....Diesel engines used to last longer when they were simple, but not any more. And now they are saddled with all manner of emissions-scrubbing devices, the failure of which massively increases the running costs – especially if you buy one at three to five years old and the emissions equipment starts to play up. Note that it is illegal to adapt or remove the emissions equipment that are car was homologated with. My general advice is that if you do fewer than 20,000 miles a year, don’t get a diesel. 36
