WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SUPPORTING LOCAL GOES A LONG WAY FOR KERRY PRODUCERS The SuperValu Food Academy is a joint initiative between Ireland’s leading Irish grocery retailer, Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Office Network and since its inception in 2014, the programme has supported hundreds of start-up small food producers the length and breadth of Ireland including 15 Kerry producers as they begin their journey from their kitchen to the supermarkets. Kerry based The Busy Botanist, in Glenbeigh, Origin Bars in Firies and Cordal Farmhouse Foods are new members of the SuperValu Food Academy initiative and now SuperValu is calling on Ireland to join in and help give these small local businesses a big chance by adding one more product from the Food Academy range to their weekly shopping lists. As a direct result of the award-winning initiative, over 350 food start-ups are now currently on-shelves in their local SuperValu store 15 of which are Kerry based. This has resulted in incredible sales of over €32 million for the national Food Academy programme and has led to the creation of more than 1,500 jobs. The Food Academy is making great strides and
was recently awarded the Ruban d’Honneur at the highly prestigious European Business Awards for being “the most socially innovative initiative in the competition”. This year alone, SuperValu has continued to reinforce its genuine commitment to local by supporting 77 new local, small food producers in its innovative Food Academy programme. That represents a significant 28% increase on last year’s number of small Irish food producers who have products stocked on SuperValu shelves across the country. As SuperValu takes a lead role in the food industry by nurturing hundreds of these small food producers around the country by acting as mentors and providing them with strong retail and marketing advice, the programme has undoubtedly had a positive impact on the landscape of the Irish food industry. With a wide range of products available from the SuperValu Food Academy, there are plenty of ways customers can support and help make
a fundamental difference for local Irish businesses.
small producers to ensure their growth.
Kenneth O’Connor, SuperValu’s Food Academy Project Manager commented, “As the number one supporter of the Irish food industry, we source from over 1800 Irish suppliers. The Food Academy programme is a key pillar of our support for local and we’re proud to now have a total of 354 small Irish food companies well on the road to success, with their products on shelf in SuperValu stores. The programme continues to go from strength to strength while also allowing us to nurture
We’re calling on our loyal customers to help us support these independent Irish producers and help give them a big chance by adding one extra product to from the Food Academy range to their shopping lists. From The Busy Botanist’s tailored blend of hit infusion teas, to 100% natural Origin Bars and Cordal Farmhouse Foods’ handmade goats cheese free, there really is something for everyone from our vast range of Food Academy products.”

TECHNOLOGY CORNER with Billy O Meara (HRI Services)
LETTER TO THE EDITOR... ‘NEW’ TOWN ....OLD WAYS ?
Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology My Internet is not working! What can I do?
Billy says: If you’re with Eir or Vodafone, make sure the DSL light is steady. If its flashing ,the turn off the modem for five minutes. Try to log into the modem by opening your web browser and on top where you see the web address put in "192.168.1.254" for eir or "192.168.1.1" for Vodafone. What this will tell you is that you are communicating with the modem. Also, make sure the internet light on your modem is green not red and if you have checked those steps and you still have no internet call your broadband provider.
No “new town” will win without those working there working as a team & being responsible(like those in Killarney) Street parking is for customers & not for owners/managers/ staff. Up to now, part of the shortage of convenient street parking is due to lazy workers taking up those spaces- “Walk guys- get some exercise & fresh air & arrive warm & ready for work”!Park in the Brandon & the new one to come on the bacon factory site. Do not park in loading bays- they are for commerce & hard pressed delivery people. I know a couple of business people who park in loadingbays close to rival & other businesses (not exactly “teamplayers” ?!) The recently employed traffic warden needs to realise that contractors doing work on business premises have to park somewhere. They have to get the jobs done as fast as they can. They need to carry heavy stuff to & fro. Help them rather than making their life a misery. With the other wardens, clobber cars on double yellows, in handicapped spaces & in cycle bays , in loading bays & up on footpaths so the blind & handicapped, the mothers with prams & young children cannot get by- that could keep ye busy enough ! “Are ya O.K. is not what to ask us when we go into your shop or office. If we were O.K. we would not need to go to see you !!!! A smile & a hello goes a long way towards doing business well. A smile & a thank you when we are leaving can help us want to come back & see you again ! Let,s see a clean & tidy front door & a clean window & brushing stuff out on to the street is a “No No” ! When you put your bins out & bring them in cleanup any rubbish around & do not leave your bins out at night .If ye have any respect for our town, your town. Success, fast moving busy happy days are in your hands “Bart” (Name & address withheld by Editor ) 4

Billy says: No.... When Sky install the Sky Q box they will be changing the LNB on your dish for it to work with your new sky Q Box. In the UK you can ask for a Sky Q Hybrid 6 way LNB which will enable you to keep your Free to Air but they are not available from Sky Ireland at the moment. But I have seen them available on eBay.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE WOMAN APPOINTED TO KEY POSITION AT MATER PRIVATE HOSPITAL CORK TRALEE-woman Mandy Mc Kenzie Vass has been appointed as Admission and Discharge Manager at the Mater Private Hospital, Cork. Mandy trained as a Registered Nurse in St Vincent’s Hospital Elm Park, Dublin and during her career she worked in Cardiology, Medical, Orthopaedics, General Surgery and Palliative Care Settings. She consolidated her organisational skills with her Post-Graduate Courses in Healthcare and Leadership Management.
The Chief Operations Officer at Mater Private Cork, John Mulhern, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mandy as a new addition to the team at Mater Private Cork. She brings with her a wealth of clinical and administrative experience. Mandy has held senior management posts for the past 15 of her 30 year career, mostly in the Private Healthcare sector. Her specialist interests include Patient Flow, Access and Continuity of Care, Integrated Discharge Planning and Holistic Patient Experience.
Mandy, who will join Ms. Fiona O’Connell in the post as Admission and Discharge Manager, is originally from Tralee, Co Kerry where she lives with her husband Peter and their three children. Over the past 12 months, Mater Private Hospital Cork has doubled its capacity, opened a new ward and Emergency Department leading to an increase in staffing levels in a number of medical and administrative areas.
MAJOR DOCTORS MEDICAL CONFERENCE IN TRALEE THIS WEEKEND A major national medical conference planned for Tralee this weekend will attract approximately 150 doctors from all over Ireland and the United Kingdom who perform community surgery. The 6th annual scientific meeting of the Primary Care Surgical Association is being held in The Rose Hotel in Tralee on the 29th and 30th September 2017. This prestigious meeting is one of the biggest medical conferences ever to be held in Tralee. ‘’We have some of the top experts on community surgery coming from Ireland, the UK and Spain to talk and present workshops at this event. Killarney has traditionally hosted these major medical meetings but I feel Tralee can offer the same, if not better facilities to attract national medical meetings’’ said Dr David Buckley, the local organiser and secretary of the Primary Care Surgical Association. Most delegates are GPs who perform surgical procedures in their own practices such as removal of select cases of skin cancer, vasectomies, circumcisions, removal of ingrown toenails and removal of various annoying or dangerous lumps or bumps on the skin. These community surgery procedures are carried out painlessly under local 6

anaesthetic and it is usually safer, more convenient and less expensive for these procedures to be carried out in the community rather than in hospitals. A particular focus of this year’s meeting is a cryosurgery masterclass which will focus on using very cold liquids and gasses to ‘’freeze off’’ the various skin lesions. These usually include warts, verrucas, keloid scars and some skin cancers. Speakers include, Dr Paola Pasquali, a consultant dermatologist from Spain and a world leader in cryosurgery, Prof Colm O’Mahony, an expert in sexual health from the UK and our own Dr David Buckley, who has lectured nationally and internationally on cryosurgical techniques. There will be a large pharmaceutical exhibition running in conjunction with the meeting. This meeting should bring approximately 250 people to Tralee for the weekend. This is a welcome boost to the local economy on this shoulder season and hopefully will help attract other major medical meetings to Tralee in the future. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CHANGE AT THE HELM OF TRALEE LADIES RUGBY Club captain Maura Collins looks forward to the upcoming season “Tralee ladies’ rugby season was due to kick off last Sunday the 24th of September 2017 at home to Ballincollig in O’Dowd Park in the first round of the 2017/2018 Munster Division 1 League with kickoff at 1.00pm. But due to the bereavement of one of the Ballincollig Clubs founders , this match was postponed to a future date The Tralee Ladies team have been very successful in recent years, when just last year we retained their Division One Munster league title against Thurles. This was followed quickly by a semi-final against the same opponents in the Munster Cup, where this time it saw, in a reversal of fortunes, Tralee lose by just 3 points, but ended what was
considered a very successful season. Tralee was guided for the past few seasons by a well experienced partnership of Mike Keane and David Condon. They were certainly the glue that held the team together through the tough encounters with fierce oppositions. This season, however, has seen Mike Keane step down from our management team to take on a very challenging role as Junior Vice President in Munster Rugby, where we all wish him the best of luck. This season, with the loss of Mike, we are now joined by Tigger O’Dowd who is taking up the new role of head coach. Tigger is joined by Jack Galvin, Edel Coen and Eimear Foley in the coaching team while David continues his role

as administrator. Needless to say, we wish them all the best of luck in the coming season and hope they continue the success of recent years. The ladies train on both Wednesday and Friday nights in O’Dowd at 7 pm. We would
welcome and love to see new people who are interested in trying something new. Rugby is a sport that gives people an opportunity to keep up fitness levels, have fun and meet new people all at the same time.
ST. BRENDAN’S/OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES
St. Brendan’s/Oakpark Community Games area AGM will take place Monday October 16th at 8.30pm in Na Gaeil Clubhouse. It is very important that anyone who is interested in their child competing in community games activities next year should attend. We need to appoint a new committee and need new members, if we fail to do so we cannot partake in activities next year. Community games cover a range of sports, art and cultural events and are a wonderful opportunity for children to try out a new activity and make new friends.

PENNYS PS PRO HIGHLIGHTER IN ‘GOLD DIGGER’
If you follow me on Instagram you will have already seen me raving about this product, I am SO impressed! I’m usually a high end highlighter gal - my favourite highlighter is the Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop which retails for 32 euro, but this Pennys highlighter is absolutely INSANE for the price of 3.50!!!! Like honestly, you can’t not afford to try it. Pennys is really upping their game with regards to their cosmetics, so get your hands on this while you can! It is available in Pennys in Tralee, my favourite shade is ‘Gold Digger’ because I love a good gold toned highlight, but there are three other shades also. You’re welcome! I hope you all have an amazing week!

FITNESS!
HOPE HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I NG A GREAT WEEK! YOU’RE ALL HAVI t and the importance of consistency. isten So last week I talked about being cons scales. you can track your progress without the how t abou talk to going ‘m I week This
THE WEIGHING SCALES
Just a word. But to some people, it’s a big scary word. Now personally, I think… if you are unhealthy, overweight, underweight or just generally not living a healthy lifestyle, a good starting point is to know your weight. Not because your weight defines anything or makes you ‘fat’ or ‘skinny’ but because knowledge is power. For years I avoided the scales, I wasn’t aware of what my weight was and I feel like I was just ignoring it. Ignorance is bliss and all that jazz. But one day I decided, ‘right every day for a month I will weigh myself’ - now again, this might not be a good idea for some people because they could become obsessed with numbers… but, for me it gave structure, accountability and power. I like to know my weight but I don’t just rely on that, it’s one of many things I am aware of. I know that weight loss does not mean fat loss and that the numbers on the scale can actually be misleading.
SO SAY YOU WANT TO BE MORE ACCOUNTABLE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE, BUT YOU KNOW THAT WEIGHING YOURSELF ON A SCALES ISN’T THE BEST OPTION FOR YOU… HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO.
MEASUREMENTS
The first thing you can do is get out your measuring tape and measure yourself. If you don’t have a measuring tape, go to Byrnesworth in the square, they have them for less than 3 euro. Now, you have your tape so you’re ready to go. Personally, I like to measure myself first thing in the morning before any food, to get the most accurate measurements to track. I measure the smallest part of my waist, around my bellybutton for my hips, one of my upper arms and my thigh. Then write them down, and retake your measurements once or twice a month.
PICTURES
I love a good progress picture. They’re really helpful, especially if you’re feeling unmotivated. Again, take the picture at a certain time of the day and then make sure the ‘progress’ one is taken at the same time, preferably in the same outfit and lighting.
SLEEP
Sleep actually tells you a lot about your health. If you are focusing on being a more healthy human being, monitoring how well you sleep can tell you a lot.
TRACK PROGRESS
What I mean by ‘track progress’ is exercise wise. So say you want your cardiovascular health to improve, run for 5 minutes - see how far you go and how you feel after. Then a few weeks later, after implementing more cardio into your life, try again, maybe you’ll go twice the distance, maybe you’ll run twice as long. If you want to become stronger, track what weights you lift at the gym, and always push yourself with those weights for a week or two, then try and up the weight slightly, and repeat this… you will become stronger(once you are eating right, sleeping right and being generally mindful of your goals of course).

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017
The Ultimate Tomato Dish !
Its now that time of the year when the last of the Irish summer tomatoes leave the green house. So we need something special for them, to give them a great send off! So here are some of my ideas for the ultimate tomato dish..... We often run these on our tasty menu in our restaurant Croi , in the Square and they prove oh so popular!
TOMATO TART
WITH CHICKPEA CRUMBLE
A combination of pistachios and chickpeas adds filling protein and rich flavour in this update on the classic summery tomato tart. One tart with a pretty side salad makes a simple dinner for two, but it’s easy to double the recipe and make two tarts for a larger group. TOTAL TIME 30 minutes
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 (7 1/2-ounce) prepared pie crust or homemade pie dough, defrosted flour (for surface) 1/2 cup cooked chickpeas, drained, rinsed, patted dry 2 tablespoons raw pistachios, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 small garlic clove, coarsely chopped 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 3/4 ounces grated Parmesan (about 1/2 cup), divided 1 3/4 ounces grated Gruyère (about 1/3 cup), divided 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion 2 cups multicolored cherry tomatoes, halved 1 large egg, beaten to blend 1/4 cup basil leaves, coarsely chopped
METHOD Preheat oven to 175c Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to a 10 1/2” round. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and chill until ready to use.Pulse chickpeas, pistachios, oil, garlic, lemon zest, salt, and pepper in a food processor until coarsely chopped, about 15 seconds.Sprinkle half of cheese over top of dough, leaving a 1/2” border. Sprinkle three-quarters of chickpea crumble over cheese. Top with onion, then tomatoes. Top with remaining cheese and chickpea crumble. Fold edges of dough over filling, tucking and overlapping slightly as needed. Using a pastry brush, brush edges of crust with egg wash.Bake tart until crust is golden brown and tomatoes are roasted and beginning to burst, 16–18 minutes top tart with basil and cut into wedges
ULTIMATE CAPRESE SALAD INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
1 punt mixed cherry tomatoes, preferably heirloom, halved 7 tablespoons (or more) extra-virgin olive oil, divided Flaky sea salt 2 pounds mixed medium and large tomatoes, preferably heirloom, cut into thin slices and/or wedges 8 ounces buffalo mozzarella or mozzarella, room temperature, torn into pieces(at Croí we use once upon a cheese mozzarella) Coarsely ground black pepper
METHOD
Small basil leaves and toasted country bread (for serving) Toss cherry tomatoes with 1 Tbsp. oil in a small bowl; season with salt.Arrange tomato slices on a platter, slightly overlapping; season generously with salt. Arrange mozzarella over tomatoes; lightly season mozzarella with salt. Spoon cherry tomatoes over salad and drizzle with 6 Tbsp. oil; season with pepper. Let Recipes by stand 30 minutes to let flavors meld and release juices from tomatoes and mozzarella. Top salad with basil and additional salt and oil, if desired. Serve with bread alongside.

The technology and advanced equipment that we use at Bridge Place Dental Practice ensures that patients are extremely comfortable throughout the procedure, we have a 98% success rate for root canal treatment.” Continuing professional development and enhancement of skills is important to Susan and she ensures that she attends courses regularly both in Ireland and overseas.

Discussing the Prepare for Brexit Roadshow in Killarney and Tralee, Bank of Ireland Head of Business Banking Kerry, Siobhan Kissane said: “We have already conducted a number of events nationwide where we have been talking to our business customers about Brexit, so we know that companies in Kerry are looking for additional advice and support. Regrettably the process is both complex and uncertain and it is likely to be some time before clarity
emerges. However, it is imperative that businesses anticipate a range of scenarios and devise plans to capitalise on potential opportunities and mitigate possible risks. Our Brexit Roadshow events in Kerry will provide insight and stimulus to enable companies better understand and prepare for this significant challenge.”

GREAT NEWS FOR TRALEE AS KERRY’S COUNTY CAPITAL SECURES PURPLE FLAG STATUS TRALEE has been awarded the Purple Flag which confirms the commitment to ensuring that Kerry’s capital town has a safe, vibrant and well-managed Night Time Economy. Full details of the assessor/ panel result will be sent to the Tralee Purple Flag Committee in October and the formal presentation of the Purple Flag accreditation will take place at an award ceremony in Norwich, England in November. The aim of the Purple Flag is to increase footfall into town centres, lower crime and improve the night time experience. In a team approach, the Garda, Kerry County Council, vintners and other representatives of the hospitality sector were involved in a comprehensive application process which was led by Tralee Chamber Alliance. The Chief Executive of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “Purple Flag destinations distinguish themselves by being vibrant and well-managed and this achievement will give Tralee a much needed boost. We were very happy with how Tralee was presented during the judges’ visit. They were 34

particularly impressed by the facilities that the town has to offer families and the great range of drinking and dining options. Our Purple Flag coordinator, David Scott, and his team deserve much credit for their tireless efforts over the past number of months to prepare the application and the Judges’ tour of Tralee. Their hard work has paidoff and now the onus is on everyone in Tralee to ensure that we retain the Purple Flag into the future.” The Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley, said: “A vibrant Evening and Night Time Economy (ENTE) will further enhance the town centre of Tralee, helping to create a stimulating destination providing a safe, secure environment, with a broad choice and rich mix of entertainment and other activities. The pulling power will change throughout the evening, appealing to a range of age groups, including families, and will be accessible to all, whilst protecting the quality of life for locals and the interests of other businesses.” Two judges visited Tralee in July and throughout a weekend assessment, the judges toured the area within a circuit from The Rose Hotel to Tralee Bay Wetlands to North Circular Road and back to Fels Point, covering pubs, hotels and restaurants, Siamsa Tíre Friday 29th September 2017
Theatre, KDYS and Tralee Town Park. Tralee is Ireland’s Best Large Tourism Town, a Gold Medal Winner in the European Entente Florale Competition and a six-time Gold Medal Winner in the Tidy Towns Competition.
There are a number of Blue Flag Beaches within 10 minutes of the town centre and now the Purple Flag accreditation to Tralee will strengthen the town’s as Ireland’s premier town in which to live, work and visit.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FUNDING FOR COLLEGE Question I’m unemployed and planning to go to college. What funding is available for this? Answer Most undergraduate students attending publicly funded third-level courses for the first time will qualify for the Free Fees Initiative. You must meet criteria as regards residence, nationality and immigration status, as well as course requirements. If you qualify for free fees, you do not have to pay tuition fees. In addition to fees, there is a separate student contribution, which you pay to the college. The student grant is the main financial support for students. The grant can cover all or part of your fees (if they are not already covered) and the student contribution and it can also provide some maintenance. To qualify for a grant, you and your course must meet certain criteria and you must pass a means test. The Back to Education Allowance is available to people who have been getting certain social welfare payments for a set period of time before starting their course. You cannot get a Back to Education Allowance and the maintenance portion of a student grant at the same time. If you are eligible for both, you should find out which would be of more benefit to you.

The Free Fees Initiative, the student grant and the Back to Education Allowance all have rules regarding progression from previous studies. However, there are exceptions. If you intend to start a course at a level you have studied before, you should check whether the rules on progression apply to your situation. If you do not qualify for the Free Fees Initiative or the student grant, you should find out whether Springboard can help you to return to education. Springboard provides free higher education courses related to specific areas in which there are employment opportunities. If you have to pay tuition fees and a student contribution, you may qualify for tax relief. You can find out more about sources of funding, including the Student Assistance Fund for students experiencing financial hardship, on studentfinance.ie.

TORQUING CARS! JAGUAR’S FIRST EVER I-PACE ELECTRIC CAR WILL GET YOU FROM LONDON TO MANCHESTER ON A SINGLE CHARGE
Jaguar has unveiled the I-Pace, its first ever electric car with a claimed range of about 220-miles on a single charge. The I-Pace was revealed at the LA Motor show, and is the follow-up to Jaguar’s popular first SUV, the F-Pace . Jaguar plans to put the concept car into production this year, before hitting the roads in 2018. Despite the I-Pace’s size, comfort and all-wheel drive, the all-electric SUV will have a claimed range of about 220-miles - which means it should get you from London to Manchester on a single charge. This, Jaguar claims, should mean the average commuting driver only needs to charge it once a week with a 90-minute boost giving 80% battery, or 100% in around two hours. Its 700Nm of instant torque means it’s also powerful, going from 0-60mph in around four seconds. The car features “All Surface Progress Control and Adaptive Surface Response” for ultimate grip - so no matter the weather you just put your foot down and the car should take care of the rest.
IGNORANT FOOTBALLER’ PHOTOGRAPHED LEAVING HIS POSH £60,000 RANGE ROVER IN TWO PARKING SPACES OUTSIDE BUSY SUPERMARKET
An angry shopper has accused a footballer of “ ignorant parking “ after snapping this posh Range Rover taking up TWO spaces outside a busy supermarket. Witness Adam Godfrey said a Plymouth Argyle FC player left his luxury vehicle selfishly parked while he went shopping at the Marks and Spencer store in Derriford, Devon. Mr Godfrey said the Pilgrims player had popped into the M&S last week. He then had backed his plush Range Rover, which costs £60,000plus to buy new, into a space....or two. The store is notorious for having so few spaces that shoppers regularly battle for them, Plymouth Herald reports. It often leads to queues out of the Crownhill Retail Park. An outraged Mr Godfrey quipped: “His reversing skills are obviously as good as his ball skills.”
NOW YOU CAN WATCH YOUR CAR BEING SCRAPPED. . . ON FACEBOOK
I KNOW it was pure coincidence but there was a certain irony in Volkswagen Commercials scrapping the first car under its so-called Eco Grant deal. It just happened to be a 2007 Ford Focus diesel. Nothing like putting the squeeze on a rival. Not only that but you could watch the poor little Focus meeting its death on Facebook. The ‘eco’ deal, in the case of VW Group commercials, applies to any van or passenger car owner who can get up to €4,000 including VAT of an allowance against a new vehicle if they scrap their Euro 1-4 diesel. The company tells us the first person to do so was Vincent Collins, from Service Matters, with its headquarters in Roscommon, who ordered a 172 VW Crafter van and scrapped the Focus. The Commercials wing of the Volkswagen Group reports a good year so far and expects the scrappage deal to liven things up for the rest of 2018. Coincidentally, it also announced an important new version - a Caddy panel van petrol. Yes, petrol. Times are changing. This is an 85bhp TFSi (petrol) and starts from €14,995 (incl VAT) or €13,995 with the Eco Grant. The company reckons it is one of a kind on the market for that sort of money. The brand has its own bank, as you probably know, and it has loaned more than €30m in PCPs to commercial vehicle customers so far this year: 80pc of applications have been approved.
JOHNSON & PERROTT TO INVEST €15M IN CORK
Johnson & Perrott is to invest up to €15m to build a new dealership cluster for its Cork City-based motor dealership division, creating a minimum of 30 new jobs. The company claims this will be the most significant investment in the motor industry in Cork for 10 years. Currently based at Mahon Point Retail Park and Douglas Road in Cork, with seven car franchises, Johnson & Perrott has acquired 4.3 acres of land on the Bandon Road in Bishopstown, the site of the previous Uponor factory, which closed in 2003. The company will start construction on a new 14-car showroom, and new car-handover area and workshop facilities for its dual Jaguar Land Rover franchise, immediately followed by an eight-car showroom and workshop facility for its Volvo franchise. Established in 1810 as a carriage manufacturer, the group also has very successful fleet management and vehicle rental divisions, and in accounts due to be published shortly, records a turnover of €88m for 2016 and a 7pc rise in pre-tax profits for the period to €5.026m. 38

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A MAN WENT TO THE POLICE STATION WISHING TO SPEAK WITH THE BURGLAR.
A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. “You’ll get your chance in court.” said the Desk Sergeant. “No, no no!” said the man. “I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I’ve been trying to do that for years!”
THREE DOCTORS ARE TALKING ABOUT DEATH
The first, a dentist, says, “When I die, I think I’d like my tombstone to be shaped like a tooth made of white marble.”“Hey,” adds the cardiologist, “that’s not a bad idea, I’d love my tombstone to be shaped as a heart…” The gynecologist is silent for a bit, then says, “I think scattering of the ashes is my option.”
ROBOT
A guy goes into a bar in Louisiana where there’s a robot bartender. The robot says, “What will you have?” The guy says, “Whiskey.” The robot brings back his drink and says to the man, “What’s your IQ?” The guy says, “168.” The robot then proceeds to talk about physics, space exploration and medical technology. The guy leaves, but he is curious so he goes back into the bar. The robot bartender says, “What will you have?”The guy says, “Whiskey.” Again, the robot brings the man his drink and says, “What’s your IQ?” The guy says, “100.” The robot then starts to talk about NASCAR, Budweiser, the Saints and LSU Tigers. The guy leaves, but finds it very interesting, so he thinks he will try it one more time. He goes back into the bar. The robot says, “What will you have?” The guy says, “Whiskey,” and the robot brings him his whiskey. The robot then says, “What’s your IQ?” The guy says, “Uh, about 50.” The robot leans in real close and says, “SO, you people still pied off that Hillary lost the election?

and said “An idiot outside wants to buy only 1/2 kg of butter”. To his surprise, the customer was standing right behind him. So the boy added immediately, “And this gentleman wants to buy the other half”. After the customer left, the manager said “You have saved your position by being clever enough at the right time. Where do you come from?” To this the boy said, “I come from Brazil. The place consists of only ladies of the night and football players!” The manager replied coldly, “My wife is also from Brazil!!”. To this the boy asked excitedly, “Oh yeah? Which team does she play for?
ITS THE WAY I TELL ‘EM !
A man is spending his first day in prison and is about to go to bed. Right before he falls asleep, he hears a shuffle and all of the Prisoners are awake and shuffling to the edge of their cell. One man shouts “I’ll go first. 6821!” And everyone laughs. Another man shouts “Me next! 1320!” And the prisoners are laughing hysterically. The man, now confused, gets up and walks over to his cellmate. “Hey man. Why is everyone shouting random numbers and why do people laugh after a number is called?” His cellmate then responds with “We are telling jokes. We do it every night. There is a book of 9999 jokes that this prison has. Everyone has read the book and memorized it. Instead of retelling the entire joke over again, we just shout out the Joke number. It’s easier and we all know what each other are talking about.” The man loved this idea. He was excited to get his hands on this book. The next morning, he strolled on down to the library and took out the book. He spent the entire day reading all 9999 jokes and picking out his favorites. Night time rolled around and once the guards left, the prisoners all got up and walked to the edge of their cell. The first prisoner shouted “8231” and was followed by laughs. The next prisoner followed it up by shouting “3315” which was caused the prison to burst out into laughter. The man was now feeling ready. He then shouted “4712”. The entire prison went silent. The man was feeling upset and turned to his cellmate and asked “What’s wrong? I read the entire joke book, picked out a funny one and no one laughed. What did I do wrong?” The cellmate responded with: “Some people just don’t know how to tell jokes

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... EXPLORE THE WORLD OF DRAMA WITH FREE RADICALS YOUTH THEATRE Wednesday 27th September 2017, Tralee, Co Kerry: Siamsa Tíre, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, invites young people aged 15 – 20 to explore the world of drama as it announced the launch of its ninth season of the Free Radicals Youth Theatre (FRYT). The first Taster Session will take place on Saturday 30th September from 4-7pm at Siamsa Tíre. Open to new members, the FRYT has successfully created a safe space for young people to explore their world using the medium of drama. The group meets every Saturday from 4-7pm and the term runs from 7th October until April. Established in 2008, the Free Radicals Youth Theatre provides workshops allowing members to devise and create
their own drama and develop a wide range of performance skills. This enables members to gain confidence, develop team working skills and perform work in a professional atmosphere. It also gives them an opportunity to explore their own identity through the expressive and performing arts and socialise creatively. Siamsa Tíre welcomes back award winning Kerry playwright Neil Flynn and Kerry actor Gerry Fitzgerald as facilitators of the FRYT again this year. They work tirelessly to inspire the group each year as they help them produce and perform collaborative works. Last year two productions were rehearsed and performed at the end of each term. “We are delighted that the Free Radical Youth Theatre
has been such a great success over the years and that it continues to develop the individuals, local talent and provide a stepping stone
for future careers in the arts,” comments Catrióna Fallon CEO Siamsa Tíre.

Healthcare Teresa O’Donovan paid tribute to the work Kerry Hospice Foundation undertook in fundraising and also for the collaborative approach the charity took in working with the HSE/Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. A Kerry Hospice Foundation event today (Friday September 22nd) marks the completion of the construction phase and the handover of the building from contractor Eamonn Costello (Kerry) Limited to Kerry Hospice Foundation.
Friday 29th September 2017
The ambitious project was undertaken as collaboration between the HSE and Kerry Hospice Foundation Teresa O’Donovan said: “We would like to thank Kerry Hospice Foundation led by Chairperson Ted Moynihan for their tireless fundraising. This new addition to the Kerry Specialist Palliative Care Service will be of immense value to patients throughout Kerry and neighbouring counties. Until now, there have been no specialist in-patient beds in Kerry for palliative patients. We wish to acknowledge the fundraising efforts of Kerry Hospice Foundation and the generosity
of the public which has led to the completion of this wonderful facility.” The next phase of the project includes equipping and staffing the unit. The significant annual running costs will also be partially funded by the KHF for the first five years the unit is open. Recruitment for the specialised staff needed to run the unit is well underway and the unit will be equipped and kitted out in the weeks ahead. Cork Kerry Community Healthcare hopes to be in a position to welcome patients to the unit by the end of the year.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR UNDER 18 BETTING OUTLAWED AT THE TRACK – A GOOD OR BAD IDEA? This is probably the first time this column has started with a greyhound piece but the implementation of a law that bans anyone under 18 from betting at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is one worth exploring. Coming into force on Sunday the law makes it an offence under the betting act for an u18 to place a bet and where a question arises then ID will be sought. Now on the face of it this might seem to be a good idea as there is no doubt that there is problem gambling in the country and this can have devastating consequences. And some will argue that allowing under 18’s to bet at the Track only introduces them to gambling. Now I am not a regular attender at the dogs but go there a couple of times a year – usually for fundraising nights. And one of the things that stands out is the number of families that are in attendance. It is not really a place where hoards of teenagers go for a night out. And there is no doubt that kids do enjoy placing a euro or two bet and enjoy the win – which of course those who agree with the ban will say that this is the issue. But when parents are present and they oversee their children’s behaviour should this not be allowed. Does it not lead to responsible behaviour and if kids learn about responsible betting early on is it not more likely than they will not develop a problem later on. There are not many attractions that the whole family can enjoy a night out at. They can go to the track and have dinner, the kids are in a safe environment and enjoy watching the racing and up to now enjoyed their little wagers and it’s all over by 10pm. Was that so wrong up to now? Is there evidence that any of those families who enjoyed their nights at the track have gone on to become addictive gamblers? But it looks like it’s a fait-acompli so hopefully the track can continue to be a place where families can enjoy a good night out together. AT THE TRACK: Starting this Friday night is the A5

525 sweepstake which is run in memory of the late Steve Kennedy who was involved all his life in the doggy world. There is also good news for owners and trainers as race prize money is being increased through a 25% increase in ordinary grants helped by the sale of the Harolds Cross track. TRALEE WINNERS OF THE BIRMINGHAM HOOPER DOLAN INSURANCES A1 600 FINAL: Last Saturday 23 September saw the much anticipated Final of the “Birmingham Hooper Dolan A1 600 Stake” at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. There was a good attendance for the final to see which of the six remaining Greyhounds would bring home the €1,700 winners cheque and trophy. The winning greyhound, Lassa Exquisite was first past the post in a time of 32.76. A great result for Michael Costello and Frank O’Donnell, Tralee Co. Kerry. Liam Kennedy Track Manager said “Lassa Exquisite is a worthy winner of this year’s event”. INAUGURAL AND LAST (U18) MINOR ALL STARS: Firstly credit to the GAA and sponsors Electric Ireland for introducing a Minor All Star Awards with the Team of the Year being recognised at the inaugural GAA Minor Star Awards that will take place in Croke Park on October 7th. It is interesting that these are being brought in now that Minors will no longer be u18’s but u17 from next year and I presume this part of the re-branding of the Minor grade. I have to say I am still not convinced that the change is the right way to go and is not in reaction to the very successful u17 League of Ireland. One thing that it will certainly do is make players chose their preferred sport earlier as soccer has the u15 (and possibly an u13 League of Ireland but the merits or not of this is for another column!) while GAA players from u14’s have Development squads and it is getting almost impossible for a player to play at the elite level of both sports. But none of the will bother this year’s Minor All Stars. It certainly was a special year for Kerry to win Friday 29th September 2017
and win the historic four-in-a-row. There is no doubt that picking an All Star team at minor level is not easy and this year’s judges were Meath Senior football manager Andy McEntee, legendary former Cork hurler and current Clare hurling selector, Dónal Óg Cusack; former Armagh All Star footballer, Oisín McConville and former Galway hurler and AIB All Ireland Club hurling championship winning manager, Mattie Kenny. The inaugural awards emphasise that there is ‘nothing minor about playing Minor’ and so honour the best individual performers from the entire season, also recognising the crucial and admirable part played by the families, clubs and communities of players which allowed them to get to this point in their sporting career. Four counties are represented and these four are from the four semi-finalists –Kerry, Derry, Dublin and Cavan and this is probably one of the issues going forward. All the players selected deserve to be on the team but the way the championship is structured and different structures in different provinces will make it difficult for any counties outside of the last four to be represented. 8 Kerry players on the team is just rewards for this year’s exceptional squad and indeed some that didn’t make it can feel a little unlucky. Congratulations to those selected: Devidas Uosis, Cian Gammell, Michael Potts, Niall O’Donoghue, Barry Mahony, David Clifford, Donal O’Sullivan, and Fiachra Clifford. TRALEE GETS ALL THE FINALS: There was a general welcome in Tralee when Austin Stacks Park was named as the venue for the majority of the finals of the GAA competitions this year. The big one is the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship and this will take place on Sunday October 22nd at 3pm. This will be contested by the semi –final winners from Kerins O’Rahillys v South Kerry and Dr Crokes v West Kerry. This will be preceded by the Castleisland Mart Junior Premier Championship Final is South Kerry are defeated in the County Championship semi-final. Before that it’s the big day for
the counties hurling fans with the pairing of Ballyduff and Lixnaw meeting in the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship final on Sunday October 8th at 3pm in a game that should draw a huge crowd. The curtain raiser will be the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor Hurling decider throwing in at 1pm. The Castleisland Mart Intermediate Championship Final will also be in Austin Stack Park on Sunday October 29th at 3pm with the Junior Championship throwing in at 1pm. This is good news for Tralee and the businesses in the town but will also need to be managed. It is not fair on those around the Stadium such as the Horan Centre and Lidl to have all their spaces taken up by people going to the games. The location of the Stadium is ideal in one way but in another it is in a business area unlike the Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney which is away from businesses. Should Dr Crokes qualify then maybe a boosted train service from Killarney to Tralee could be looked at with a number of special trains. Also should a Park and Ride be looked at for the two big County Championship finals? I am sure supporters would have no problem using this if it was properly organised as it is at many other major sporting and other events. But on an overall view it will be a very good month for Tralee and hopefully the whole town can see a major economic boost from these finals. Hopefully people from outside the town will come into its newly renovated centre and enjoy all the town has to offer. And of course everyone from the town has their fingers crossed the Kerins O’Rahillys will make the Senior final – what a day that would be for the club and its supporters. PRIZES DECIDED BUT NOT ANNOUNCED: The Annual Awards ceremony for the Tralee Bay Swimming Club will take place on Saturday October 7th and the anticipating is growing at to who will be named the Best Newcomer of the Year, The Swimmer of the Year, the Winter Swimmer of the Year and the top 3 in each age group. All on the night the prizes for the Gerald Walsh Swim will be presented. Starting on Sunday October 15th at 11am and continuing each Sunday is the Turkey Series – as the countdown to Christmas really gets underway!! There is lots to do in and out of the water during the next number of Sundays and everyone puts e2 in the kitty that goes towards the turkeys and hams and hampers that will be drawn in time for the Festive season. SHIELD THE FOCUS FOR 17’S LEAGUE OF IRELAND TEAMS AS 15’S MAKE IT THREE FROM THREE: The Kerry 17’s finished a very good League campaign going down 7-3 away to a Cork City side that needed the win to secure a top four place. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER twice and Sheagh O’Connor once for a Kerry side that lost a number of players to injury during the game including keeper Robert Osbourne who was taken off with concussion. Hopefully many of these will be back on Sunday when Limerick comes to town in the first round of the Shield. The Kerry 15’s made it three wins from three with back to back wins over Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park. This moves them onto 9 points and if they can keep the run going away to Waterford this weekend they will be right in the hunt for a top two place. Locally the long road to the Aviva Stadium beings this week with the opening games in the FAI Junior Cup. All the clubs will take inspiration from Killarney Celtic’s run to the semi-finals last season. From a Tralee point of view Tralee Dynamos – who lost to Killarney Celtic last week – are at home to Broadford, Tralee Celtic welcome Rathkeale and Mitchels Avenue are also at home to Newcastlewest Rovers. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: Academy: Once again great numbers turned out at our Academy last Friday evening in marvellous weather and all participants are making tremendous progress over the past number of weeks. Those to impress last evening were Ryan Nix, Matthew O Connor, Luke Kavanagh, Taylor Kate Leane, Jayden Collins and Kevin Horgan. Thanks to coaches for the time and energy they are investing into these Academy sessions. Dynamos Academy continues every Friday evening at Cahermoneen from 6 to 7 pm. New players are as always welcome. The 15’s and 13’s both went down in their opening National Cup games but both sets of players showed great skills which will stand to them as the season progresses. The 17’s were on the wrong side of a 7 goal thriller will neighbours The Park last week but will bounce back from this narrow loss. PARK LIFE: St Brendan’s Park is delighted to welcome girls born in 2007 and 2006 to play with their new Girls u12 team. The club is also looking for help from parents. Girls in the Tralee area must be give the same opportunities to play soccer and this is a great start. Pride of place at the weekend goes to the u15’s who defeated Mungaret Regional on penalties. Well done also to the u13’s who beat Ballymackey in the National Cup and the 17’s who defeated Dynamos 4-3. The Academy put in a big days training and the Team of the Week is: Goalkeeper Samson Abubakar u8, Defenders -David Mullins u9, Christian Dunne u8, Michael Carmody u6, Keenan Dennehy u7 Midfielders - Jacob Drzymala u8, Thomas Breen u9, Rian McEvoy u8 and Strikers - Karol Kowallzyk u7, Donnacha Foley u6 and Jack
Conway u9. Players are asked to remember that registration is now due. IMPRESSIVE CRICKET SEASON OVER FOR KERRY: Kerry’s senor cricket squad’s last game was rained off and with Cork getting what they needed from their last game against Limerick it means that County Kerry 1st XI took second place in the League. In Munster Division 1 Kerry second’s took 4th but there was great news again for the Kerry 3rd in Munster Division 2 as Kerry retained their title. DETAILS OF BANNA BEACH HOTEL KERRY WINTER RALLY ANNOUNCED: November 13th is the date where the eyes of the rallying world will be on the North Kerry stages when the popular end-of-season clubman’s rally will take place over 3 classic stages. The rally is the final round of the Top Part West Coast Rally championship and several of the awards are set to be decided on the event. Clerk of the course Jakes Kelly will lay on two different stages, each run three times, in a route that promises to be challenging for the drivers but with very limited road mileage between each test. Last year’s rally was won by the Cavan /Kerry pairing of Stephen McCann and Damien Fleming. They have since sold their event-winning Subaru Impreza and have recently acquired a R5-specification Ford Fiesta which they will debut at the North Kerry event. CBS, THE GREEN RUN: CBS, The Green secondary school is busy preparing for its annual 5k/3K timed fun run which takes place on Sunday, 1st of October at 1pm. Both routes are fast and flat and suitable for runners and walkers alike. Instead of category prizes this year there will be trophies for the first 10 males and first 10 females in the 5K and also trophies for the first 3 boys and first 3 girls in the 3k. There will be medals for all, bouncy castles, music, mass warm up and plenty post-race refreshments. Registration is available all this week from the school office, on Saturday the 30th of September from 2pm to 6pm and also on the morning of the run from 9am. Anyone who wishes to donate some post-race goodies can also do so at these times. The cost is 10e for adults and 5e for students and kids. There will be a raffle on the day of the run for a Nivea hamper for all runners who register on Saturday between 2pm and 6pm. We are delighted to have Lee Strand and Foley’s Spar, Castlemaine Road backing us again this year as well as other local businesses in Tralee. Cillard Camogie News: Cillard Camogie Club will host their Final U8 & U10 blitz of the year this Saturday 30th September in Kilmoyley at 11 am.
