LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Students and Renting In our last column we discussed Sophie, a new student in IT Tralee and student working rights. This week we will follow up on that and discuss the hugely important issue of rented accommodation. First off it should be noted that there is no legal requirement for a landlord to provide you with a lease and neither is there an obligation on you to sign a lease if you do not wish to do so and you still have legal rights under the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 and Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2015. If you do decide to sign a lease it cannot take away from your rights under the Equal Status Acts 2004-2015 and the terms of the tenancy cannot be changed during the lease period unless you and the Landlord both agree. Since a lease is legally binding and usually a year you should read it carefully and always get a second opinion on it. It’s very important to note that there is no cooling off period like a consumer rights contract. If for whatever reason you break the lease or do not give proper notice of leaving the property, it does not automatically give your landlord reason to keep your deposit or make deductions from it. They may however seek to cover costs incurred such as re advertising, re-letting costs or lost rent. You should seek evidence of this. A landlord has a right to lessen their losses in re letting their property as soon as possible. You may be asked for certain documentation like your PPS Number, a reference from your current employer, Photo I.D. or a bank statement but you should only hand these over if you are being offered a tenancy. Unfortunately there are some scams out there so a student must be careful when looking to rent, be careful of online ads and only look for a reputable landlord or estate agent. Don’t be rushed in handing over money and DO NOT hand over cash and always insist upon a proper receipt. This should always be done at the property and it’s vital that the keys work and you have proper contact details for the landlord/agent. Always photograph the premises when you go into it as evidence of the state of the premises on letting. Landlords have to maintain their properties to a certain standard. Legal Quip

One advantage of living in the past is that the rents are much cheaper.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CAN STRAND ROAD GIVE SOUTH KERRY THE ‘BLUES’ THIS WEEKEND? Semi-finals are the worst round in any competition and are there for winning any way possible. This Saturday at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney , throwing in a 3pm Kerin’s O’Rahillys face South Kerry in the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship semi-final and an hour later they will be delighted if they win by 1 point. From a Tralee perspective , it has been Austin Stacks that have been to the forefront in the Championship over the last few seasons. Rahilllys are hoping to make their first final since 2008 and add to their big win in 2002 and it has been four years since they made the last four. However these two sides have a recent history meeting

4 times since 2013 with both sides winning twice including of course the Tralee sides success against the same opposition in the first round of the Championship. In a high scoring encounter Rahillys won 2-16 to 2-12 before going on to knock out Kilcummin, Dingle and East Kerry. That earlier meeting won’t have any real influence on this weekend’s game but of course will be used as extra motivation in the Rahilly’s dressing room. The other big ‘elephant in the room’ is that Rahilly’s need to win to secure their status as a senior club. So the question is will that work in their favour or will it be added pressure? Rahilly’s are in a good place coming into the game with those wins under their belt and a full squad to pick from. They will be looking for big performances from the likes of Tommy Walsh, David Moran and Barry John Keane but will also need their defence to work very hard. A lot will also depend on the fitness of Bryan Sheehan and Killian Young from a South Kerry point of view. But they did beat Rathmore with this

hugely talented duo which shows that other players have stepped up and this will certainly make the South Kerry side very dangerous. With the game being place in the wide open spaces of the Fitzgerald Stadium it also remains to be seen how both teams cope with the venue, especially if the weather does not co-operate. A big crowd is expected on the day as this is the first game in a double header with Dr Crokes facing West Kerry at 4.45pm. But even this is a bit of an unknown as the games are live on Eir Sport – the first time

ever this is being done. If the day is bad will many stay away and watch it on the television? Like all big games there are many imponderables that we can only speculate about in the run up to the game. But what we do know is that it’s a huge game for the club and it would be great for the town if they can go all the way. I am sure everyone, bar the diehards in the other town clubs, are cheering them on. ......Pat Harnett , Sports Columnist, The Tralee Advertiser

“PRES GIRLS ARE BEST!“ There was great pride in Pres Tralee when news was received that 3 students from Pres Tralee who sat their Junior Certificate examinations in June 2017 have been nominated to participate in the National Science Olympiad based on their excellent results in Science and Mathematics. Aisling Harty, Charlotte O’Halloran and Mary O’Connell all received A grades in both subjects. The girls’ Science teachers Kay O’Mahony, Clem O’Keeffe and Rita O’Donoghue extended sincere congratulations and good wishes to the girls as they take on this challenge and will be supporting them as they prepare in coming weeks for the event which will be held in DCU in October and November this year. Maths teachers Margaret O’Connell 4

and Mary Colgan expressed their great pride in their students’ achievements. The selection of 3 students from Pres Tralee is further evidence of the long-standing record of excellence in teaching and learning in the STEM subjects in Pres Tralee where the majority of Junior cert students take Science at Junior level and can then avail of Biology, Chemistry, Physics at Leaving Cert level along with Applied Maths and Higher level Maths. Science students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of science activities from the BT Young Scientist Exhibition to Eco-Unesco Young Environmentalist awards, Scifest to SEAI One Good Idea. Science students from Pres Tralee have reached the National finals of all these Friday 6th October 2017

Aisling Harty & Mary O’Connell competitions. Emer Jones won the BT Young Scientist in 2008, TY students won the overall National award and Senior Category awards at the Eco Unesco awards in 2016 and 2 groups reached

the Eco Unesco finals again in 2017. Another TY group won the Senior Award in the Food Miles category of the SEAI One Good Idea competition in 2017.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... “LIAM’S LODGE” GETS THE GO AHEAD, AND CREATES 117 JOBS IN TRALEE An Bord Pleanala has this week upheld the Planning permission granted by Kerry County Council earlier this year to allow the construction of “Liam’s Lodge” a new respite centre for children with complex needs, genetic, rare & life limiting disorders in Curragraigue, Blennerville, Co Kerry. The respite centre will cost over €14m to build and fit out and will create an estimated 117 new jobs locally when it opens. It is anticipated that the facility will be up and running by 2021 and will cater for over 1,000 families a year. It will provide national respite, and palliative care supports for children primarily from the west coast and Munster areas. The facility, the first of its kind in Ireland, which is being spearheaded by the Saoirse Foundation, will include eight three bed family residential lodges, fourteen two bed residential family lodges, a reception area, four therapy rooms, two sensory rooms, five physiotherapy suites, three offices with meeting

rooms, a playroom, a cafeteria and staff facilities. Speaking today Tony Heffernan the CEO of the Saoirse Foundation the charity behind the Liam’s Lodge initiative said; “We are thrilled that planning permission for Liam’s Lodge has finally been granted. We are really eager now to get this facility up and running as quickly as we can because we know just much a facility like this is needed. We aim to staff Liam’s lodge with loving care givers who will provide the best of care to our special guests allowing Mom and Dad and healthy siblings to take a break, relax and spend some quality time with their family in a quiet, nurturing environment. We have personal experience of the challenges that caring for a seriously ill child with complex needs can pose for the whole family and we know how much this kind of respite care is really needed.” Also speaking today Mary Heffernan said; “In recent years Tony and I lost both our children Saoirse and Liam to

Battens disease when they were just five years old. We understand only too well how families caring for seriously ill children could do with a place to go to recharge their batteries and allow their whole family time to relax and be looked after by people who understand their situation and needs. That’s what Liam’s Lodge will be. We’re now going to go full throttle at fundraising to get this facility up and running as quickly as we can.”

The good news of the An Bord Pleanala decision, is the perfect end to a great week for the Heffernan’s personally, who just a few days ago, renewed their wedding vows after 16 years of marriage. Speaking today Tony Heffernan said; “Three years ago our son Liam passed away on our 13th wedding anniversary and since then we’ve been hoping for a “happy” day to mark in the calendar. This news from An Bord Pleanala is the perfect news to cap off a brilliant week.”

fantastic” said John Hickey, Store Manager, Byrnes Spar Caherslee Known as The Oscars of Business Excellence, The Q Mark Award is the highest accolade an Irish business can achieve, given both the intense competition and the exacting standards required. It is a great honour for Friday 6th October 2017

us to win a National Q mark award and bring it to Tralee and it is only possible as a result of the huge attention to detail that each and everyone of our staff give to their tasks everyday. This award is only given to stores who achieve the highest standards in the industry and the judges criteria get tougher every year making our win even sweeter.” Louis Byrne, Owner, Byrnes Spar Group Tralee (Oakpark, Monavalley, Caherslee)

Over 500 people representing 135 companies attended the glitzy, black-tie ceremony at the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road in Dublin 4 in competition for one of only 26 awards presented. HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT WEEK! This week I will be talking about something I get SO many questions on, ‘how to be a Makeup Artist’.

So, you wanna be a Makeup Artist?

Great. Fantastic. You want to be a part of one of the MOST saturated industries in Ireland at the moment. Just letting you know. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just want to emphasise that so you’re aware of the industry and it’s relevant to the points that I’m about to make…

BACKSTORY

When I first initially got into makeup, I literally taught myself through YouTube tutorials, so I was what you call ‘Self-Taught’. I mostly did my own face and occasionally, I did other faces too. Let me just make a point, just because you do your own face perfectly, does not mean you will be good at doing someone else’s face. You learn by practicing, on all different face shapes, ages, skin types etc. I moved to Dublin - where there was A LOT more Makeup Artists, who not only were more experienced than me, THEY HAD QUALIFICATIONS. I was in the middle of interviewing for a job on a Makeup Counter, I got through 4 stages, to the final round. It was between me and another girl. She got the job, I was told by the owner it was because out of the two of us, she was qualified and I was not. So I decided to get my own qualification. Got a job with a huge international brand immediately after, which led me to become the Senior Makeup Artist on Counter, go to London training and do Makeup on Irish Celebrities for The IFTA’s.

QUALIFICATION

Initially I just wanted to get a qualification so it would make applying for jobs easier, but now that I have got ITEC qualified and have had experience working as a Makeup Artist I see how important it is to do a course in Makeup. The ITEC Qualification means that you’re Qualified Internationally(AKA - You can work anywhere in the world!) Some of the most amazing Makeup Artists that I follow are ‘Self-Taught’, but they only do makeup on themselves. Doing makeup on clients is completely different. You are putting products on someone’s face, in my opinion, if you are charging money, you should be qualified. Why? Hygiene.

such as cold sores, eye infections or minor skin conditions are not always visible on the skin and can be passed on VERY easily. If one of my clients has a cold sore, it is a contraindication, which means I cannot do makeup on them. This is something that I never would have known if I did not do a course. Some makeup courses are waaaaaayyy too expensive, unless you want to do special effects or something. You don’t need to pay a fortune, more money won’t make you any more talented, practise will.

EXPERIENCE

Makeup Artists, if they’re not working from a counter, will most likely charge depending on both the products they use, and their experience. How do you use this to your advantage? If you have more experience, you are likely to be more skilled. Working on Counter for example, gives you a direct insight to how brands work, how makeup works, and you get to do makeup on SO many different people. Makeup isn’t just doing someone’s face, it’s an experience. You should be able to interact with you client, make recommendations based on their skin type and use the products that you know will work on their face.

BASICALLY…

If you want to be a Makeup Artist, amazing! Practise on yourself, post on social media, practise on friends, wash your brushes, build a CLIENT ONLY kit, get a qualification, get experience!

If you expect clients to invest in you, be willing to invest time and money in yourself and your kit. I hope you all have an amazing week!

Rebecca

In a Makeup Course, as well as learning about makeup, you learn the importance of being hygienic when it comes to makeup. Little things

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! Recently I have been taking more and more notice of people’s(especially women’s) ideas of what is “good for you” and “bad for you”. And it seems many women are still in the mind frame that you need to do lots of cardio, eat no carbs, stop eating after 7pm and all this other nonsense in order to lose weight. As well as marking every single food as “good” or “bad”. Now especially, is the time of year where people lean towards crash/fad diets as it’s coming up to Christmas. What happens then is during and after Christmas, they put all the weight back on, trust me.

No no no noooooo!!!!! Go to any decent personal trainer or gym instructor and they will tell you... 1. Your body needs carbohydrates for energy. 2. Strength training burns more calories for longer. 3. You do not have to eat 6 small meals a day all before 7pm to be ‘healthy’. And yes, I’m no gym goddess. But I have been training properly and eating according to my lifestyle, my goals and my preferences for over a year now and the difference is insane. The real difference between getting fast results by doing a crash diet or getting long

term slow and steady results by training and getting your nutrition right is this… If you use a crash diet, yeah you’ll lose weight quickly, but it’s not sustainable so you end up putting it all if not more back on very quickly. With proper training and nutrition - that means eating foods that are not only nutrient dense, but foods that you also enjoy eating, your body doesn’t feel deprived or lack energy so if you happen to go on a night out at the weekend or go on a holiday for a week, yeah you might be up a pound or two, but that’s normally just water weight that comes off really quickly when you go back to your regular training and nutrition that you can stick to. My main point is… don’t starve yourself, don’t deprive yourself of good foods that you think are “bad” no food is “bad” on its own. Some foods are more calorie dense than others yes, and over consumption of those foods is not recommended. But you don’t have to eat chicken broccoli and rice all day every day to see results.

Any gym supplements that I use I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla!

I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS.

“SOLID GOLD PARTY” IN THE BROGUE CELEBRATES MUSIC OF THE 60’S , 70’S & 80’S THIS WEEKEND WITH LOCAL FAVOURITE DJ CHRIS SHORTT After a great response to the previous “ABSOLUTE 8O’S NIGHTS in the Brogue ,this Sat night OCT 7th , its going to happen again with a small DIFFERENCE !! Yes , the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “Solid Gold session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .”We wanted to try something a little bit different , as we are now having entertainment up to 7 nights a week in the Brogue “ says Fiona Kirby .So Chris came up with the idea of a “Solid Gold Night “ which we thought was brilliant . According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 60’s 70’ & 80’s ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with that music , a lot of

the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into the older Music ....we are talking Beatles, Bee Gees , The Rolling Stones, Wings , Pink Floyd , The Monkees Bob Marley, The Police, Deacon Blue, Dire Straits, Abba, the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking TOM PETTY, Van Halen, Starship, The Eagles, Fleetwood mac. Chris really knows his music , he has been the Rose Ball DJ for many many years now “ says Kevin Cotter .from the Brogue ..”.it only makes sense to have someone who knows the great music of the past , as well as Chris does , entertaining our customers rather than having someone working from a Playlist !” So remember this Sat OCT 7th is “Solid Gold Night” with Chris Shortt in the Brogue

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017

Never too early to get Christmas Tips out there!!!

So it may seem a bit early to mention Christmas but believe me ... chefs and managers having been working to menus and seating plans for weeks yes weeks, ALREADY!!!So here is one for you to cut out and keep for Christmas time YES... plan your menu now and I’LL do a time frame for the Christmas buying and prepping in the weeks to come for those that didn’t keep it last year!

MY TOP TEN TIPS FOR A GREAT TURKEY

1

The brine so few people brine any more that if you do... It will stand out, people will be raving about the tastiest turkey in town! A simple one is for the most effective as it doesn’t affect the flavour of the turkey

2 3

Don’t blast it in the oven.... cook it gently.... remove the legs and confit them , you could also braise the breasts

Rremember get ahead of yourself with the work load to avoid problems. If you’re buying frozen birds, defrost in the cold room \ fridge for two days

4 5 6

Season the turkey the day before you cook it to allow the flavour to get in and season generously I tray mine up an hour before going into the oven to come to room temp, that way, it cooks more evenly from the bone to the skin

Start hot for the first 20 minutes (250c )and reduce then helps to get a real crispy skin

Don’t over baste... basting is a good thing...over basting is not, every time you open the door the heat drops and prevents a crispy skin Having a good working thermometer .....it means you are not over or under cooking the bird

LET IT SIT.... the turkey needs at least 20 minutes to rest to allow the juices soak and be moist Carving can be a problem for some but why tackle the whole bird? Break it down to manageable pieces to carve from

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A TEACHER, A GARBAGE COLLECTOR, AND A LAWYER WOUND UP TOGETHER AT THE PEARLY GATES. St. Peter informed them that in order to get into Heaven, they would each have to answer one question.

St. Peter addressed the teacher and asked, “What was the name of the ship that crashed into the iceberg? They just made a movie about it.” The teacher answered quickly, “That would be the Titanic.” St. Peter let him through the gate. St. Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuring Heaven didn’t REALLY need all the odors that this guy would bring with him, decided to make the question a little harder: “How many people died on the ship?” Fortunately for him, the trash man had just seen the movie and answered, “about 1,500.” “That’s right! You may enter.” St. Peter then turned to the lawyer. “Name them.”

WHY FEMALES SHOULD AVOID A GIRLS NIGHT OUT AFTER THEY ARE MARRIED...

The other night I was invited out for a night with the ‘girls.’ I told my husband that I would be home by midnight, ‘I promise!’ Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went 26

down way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed 3 times. Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another 9 times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quickwitted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him. (Even when totally smashed.... 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos totals = 12 cuckoos MIDNIGHT!) The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him ‘MIDNIGHT’... he didn’t seem pissed off in the least. Whew, I got away with that one! Then he said ‘We need a new cuckoo clock.’ When I asked him why, he said, ‘Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said ‘oh sh1t.’ Cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and farted.

PRESENCE OF MIND HELPS

n a store in US, a man asked for 1/2 kg of butter. The salesperson, a young boy, said that only 1kg packs were available in the Store, but the man insisted on buying only 1/2 kg. So the boy went inside to the manager’s room and said “An idiot outside wants to buy only 1/2 kg of butter”. To his surprise, the customer was standing right behind him. So the boy added immediately, “And this gentleman wants to buy the other half”. After the customer left, the manager said “You have saved your position by being clever enough at the right time. Where do you come from?” To this the boy said, “I come from Brazil. The place consists of only ladies of the night and football players!” The manager replied coldly, “My wife is also from Brazil!!”. To this the boy asked excitedly, “Oh yeah? Which team does she play for?

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FLU VACCINATION Question I have been recommended to get a flu vaccination. Can I get it for free? Answer Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition. The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you: • • Are aged 65 and over • Have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease • Have an impaired immune system due to disease or treatment • Have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 • Are pregnant • Live in a nursing home or other long-stay institution • Are a carer or a healthcare worker • Have regular contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs

Samaritans have 13 branches in the Republic of Ireland and volunteers are available round the clock 365 days a year for anyone who feels they need to talk in confidence about whatever is troubling them. Every six seconds someone makes a call to Samaritans. We are here to listen to anyone who feels they need to talk about whatever is worrying them without the fear of being judged, the free phone number for the Samaritans is 116123. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and can afford to spare 3 hours per week then the Kerry branch of the Samaritans are urgently looking to recruit new volunteers and are holding an information night next Monday the 9th of October at 7-30 pm at their centre in 43-44 Moyderwell Tralee, for enquiries please call Josephine on 087 9158779.

WELL DONE IAN!

You can get the vaccine from your GP (family doctor) or pharmacist. Children can get the vaccine from a GP. The vaccine itself is free of charge if you are in one of the recommended groups. However, doctors and pharmacists may charge a consultation fee when they give you the vaccine. If you have a medical card or GP visit card, you can get the vaccine without being charged a consultation fee.

TORQUING CARS! CALL FOR BAN ON 75,000 ‘DIRTY’ IMPORTS A YEAR

UP to 75,000 second-hand ‘dirty’ diesel and petrol imports a year should be banned by the Government to cut emissions - and prevent the country becoming a dumping ground for unwanted UK cars. That’s the conclusion of a special report compiled by a senior motoring executive - and supported by another. The report also warns that taxpayers face heavy EU emissions penalties partly due to pollution from old and dirty imports. The special briefing paper calculates that 60,000 of this year’s projected 90,000 used imports will be old diesels with much higher NOx emissions than is currently permitted for new cars. The new limits (Euro6), set in September 2015, reduce NOx from diesel engines by 67pc compared with Euro5. An expected 15,000 petrol imports fall into the pre-Euro6 category too. That makes a total of 75,000 ‘dirty’ imports. It was compiled by Nissan’s chief executive James McCarthy.”At a time when many countries are considering diesel scrappage schemes, Ireland has become a dumping ground for these cars,” he added. “Importers are exploiting a loophole that allows them import pre-Euro6 cars as long as they have been registered elsewhere in the EU. As a consequence, all government efforts to reduce harmful emissions from the transport sector are utterly futile and the Irish fleet is getting significantly dirtier.” The report concludes: “The only solution is an immediate ban on the importation of cars with Euro 5 engines and older.”

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED ZUT, A LAW...

How do I get a French emissions sticker and a European accident statement? BA HJ....This tells you all about the emissions stickers and how to get them: www.rac.co.uk/ drive/news/motoring-news/law-change-for-ukdrivers-in-french-cities. You can also get the standard European accident forms from the RAC.

LET US SPRAY

The rear nearside passenger door of my 2004 Rover 75 1.8 Connoisseur auto will only open from the outside. Do you have any ideas? My local garage suggests a sensor. PW HJ....It’s likely to be the lock servo. If you can open the door and find a grommet in the lock face of the door, take it out and use the extended nozzle of a can of WD40 to spray the lock servo and hopefully drive out any moisture that might be causing it to stick.

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY

I own a Euro 6-compliant 2015 Volvo XC60 diesel. When the Real Driving Emissions test is applied to all registrations in September 2019, will current Euro 6 cars no longer meet the RDE standard and therefore fail their MoT? AV No. This is only for newly registered cars. They are not going to make 10,000,000 diesel cars in the UK illegal overnight.

SWEEP STAKE

My anti-skid warning light started showing intermittently and slowed my 2008 BMW on the motorway. The car has only done 51,000 miles, but I am told the metal discs on the half-shafts have rusted slightly and are brushing against the sensors. The repair will cost £700 as new shafts are required. Can it not be solved more simply or cheaply? MC HJ....There is a chance that an independent BMW specialist can clean the corrosion off the ABS reluctor rings with some wire wool.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CHEF ANDREW ONG FROM THE TAMARIND ASIAN RESTAURANT GIVES HIS TIPS ON MAKING THAT ‘PERFECT’ CURRY With the cooler weather upon us what better dish to prepare at home than a nice tasty curry. The basic ingredients of a curry are garlic, ginger(a tastier alternative is galangal), onions(or shallots if you can get your hands on these), chillies(we will get to this again in a while) and some other fresh herbs(although this can be repaced by dry herbs too). The subject of chillies itself can take a whole article! But suffice to say, in traditional thai cooking we use birds eye chillis. These are very spicy, so beware! We use the green

chillis for making green curry and red chillis for red curry. To answer a common question, the ‘spicyness’ level for both curries are about the same. They are the same chilli plant starting from green when young, and maturing slowly into a orange/red colouring. Over the many years of tasting them(yes I’m still alive!) I would say that for green chillis, you taste the sharp sensation of spice right away. Where as for the red, the level of spice slowly builds up, its more mellow. My favourite is still the green, hence I will be

sharing with you a delicious recipe for green curry. Its fine if you want to use substitute chillis from the local supermarket and not the birds eye; this will be less spicy. Bell peppers are ok too but they are not spicy at all thus spoiling a good curry, I feel. And lastly, yes- get ready a glass of room temperature/ warm milk. It will help take away some of the spicyness. Water(even cold) on the contrary makes it worse by spreading the ‘capsaicin’ all over the taste buds!

NOW ...A SIMPLE RECIPE FOR CHICKEN AND EGGPLANT* GREEN CURRY(serves 3-4) Ingredients: • 4 medium sized chicken breast; diced • 1 carrot; cut to baton form • handful of sugarsnap peas/mangetout • *eggplant / aubergine(optional) diced • 10 basil leaves • 5 kaffir lime leaves • 1 cube chicken stock(optional) • 2 teaspoon palm/brown sugar • salt to taste • I tin coconut milk 400ml; Ingredients for Curry Paste: • 1 whole garlic;skin off and diced • 1 inch galangal; skin removed and diced • 6 green birds eye chilli or any green chillis • 2 medium sized shallots( or onions); skin off and diced • handful of fresh coriander including stalks, cut into smaller bits • 2 stalk lemon grass; outer hard layers removed and cut as finely a possible • half teaspoon cumin powder • 2 tablespoon fish sauce(can be substituted with soy sauce too) METHOD 1. Start making the curry paste. Add all ingredients except the cumin powder and fish sauce in a food processor/blender. Blitz everything until it turns into a smooth paste. Add the cumin powder and fish sauce and blitz again. Remove paste onto a plate or bowl with a spatula. 2. Over medium heat add a little oil and grilled chicken pieces in a large pan turning over frequently for 5 to 7 mins until almost cooked; set aside. Wipe clean same pan repeat the same for the eggplant. 3. Wipe clean the same pan; reduce heat a little; add 1 tablespoon oil and add the curry paste stirring frequently and evenly, making sure its not burnt or sticking to pan.

4. When paste starts turning brown and you can smell the overwhelming aromatic fragrance add in the tin of coconut milk and half tin of water. Turn up heat back to medium. 5. Bring to boil, this can be anything from 5 to 10 minutes depending on heat. At this stage add the chicken stock, sugar and lime leaves. Stir and mix well. 6. Reduce heat a little; stir in the chicken for 6 to 8 minutes. Add the vegetables for final 2 minutes. 7. Turn off fire(and gas); almost there! Taste and flavour with salt; when satisfied, stir in the basil and garnish with some coriander and chillies. Best with hot steamed basmati/thai fragrant rice. Enjoy!

*Tips- if using a big food processor; add in some water to help with the blending/blitz. It just takes a few minutes more when you are frying the curry paste later for the water to dissipate; remove the chilli seeds for a milder taste. Any questions regarding the recipe email me at info@tamarindtralee.ie

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER up to 60 expected to take part. Tickets will go into the drum each week until the big draw ahead of Christmas. Swims, without a wetsuit, will take place over the next number of Sunday’s with teas and coffees and other refreshments available after the swim.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR RAHILLY’S BIG DAY DAWNS: Semi-finals are the worst round in any competition and are there for winning any way possible. This Saturday at Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney throwing in a 3pm Kerin’s O’Rahillys face South Kerry in the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship semi-final and an hour later they will be delighted if they win by 1 point. From a Tralee aspect it has been Austin Stacks that have been to the forefront in the Championship over the last few seasons. Rahilllys are hoping to make their first final since 2008 and add to their big win in 2002 and it has been four years since they made the last four. However these two sides have a recent history meeting 4 times since 2013 with both sides winning twice including of course the Tralee sides success against the same opposition in the first round of the Championship. But they did beat Rathmore with this hugely talented duo which shows that other players have stepped up and this will certainly make the South Kerry side very dangerous.

TRALEE ADVERTISER

But even this is a bit of an unknown as the games are live on Eir Sport – the first time ever this is being done. POSSIBLY ONLY A PUCK OF THAT WILL SEPARATE THEM! Sunday is the day in the hurling calendar that all supporters look forward to – the final of the Garvey’s County Senior Hurling Final. This year it is Lixnaw, who were expected to be there, against the surprise side Ballyduff. Lixnaw have already beaten Ballyduff in Round 2 A 3-19 to 1-16 and also saw off Ballyheigue and St Brendan’s in the semi-final. Having beaten Abbeydorney in the first round Ballyduff then lost the aforementioned game to their final opponents. They bounced back to beat Causeway and then knocked out the favourites Kilmoyley in their semi-final. Ballyduff will be happy with their defensive displays to date as in three of their four games they kept a clean sheet. But Lixnaw hit the net three times so this one is on a knife edge. Both of the parishes have a long and proud tradition of hurling with family names stretching back many decades. They last met in the final in 2012 when Ballyduff won 1-15 to 1-09. This column will be rooting for Lixnaw, the home of my grandparents who minded the railway gates. GOOCH’S TESTIMONIAL – WHY NOT? There has been a lot of discussion in the last few weeks since Colm Cooper announced plans for a Testimonial Dinner. He is being greedy, all the money should go to charity, what about other players etc are some of the things written in the media. My belief is that a lot of this comes from the fact that the Gooch is the first GAA player to do this. Colm

Friday 6th October 2017

or any player is not contracted to the GAA or Kerry and as he has ended his inter county career then Kerry has no hold on him. Not that a player who has given so much to the county would do anything that would reflect in any bad way on the GAA. So he is perfectly entitled to put on this event. As for other players there are only a few in the game at any one time that would have the status to be able to pull this off. On how much he gives to charity I am sure this will all come out when the cheques are being presented if those involved wants it to. Why do we need to know who much he is giving to the two charities involved? I am sure both will do very well but remember an event like this, even at e500 a plate, will not be run without significant costs. Colm’s Testimonial is slightly different from those run by multimillion pound soccer players who made their money playing the game. Those few GAA stars that could get a crowd to something like this have been partly responsible for drawing in many thousands of paying fans through the turn styles and now deserve to get something for themselves. The players are the only ones not paid. Managers are, back room staff are, plenty of others are in one way or the other. Colm Cooper deserves to have this night and to benefit from it along with his chosen charities. I am sure other high profile players will follow suit. And for those who might not have the ‘star power’ of the top players then why not a combined night? SWIMMER OF THE YEAR TO BE KNOWN THIS WEEKEND: The gala event of the swimming year takes place this Saturday night when the Swimmer of the Year and the Winter Swimmer of the Year plus the Gerald Walsh prizes will be handed out. The Tralee Bay Swimming Club and Tralee Triathlon Club come together at the Meadowlands Hotel to celebrate the season. There are still a number of swimmers in line for the overall prize so there will be lots of fingers crossed until the announcement. Winter Swimming – The Turkey Series: There was a big turnout for the orientation meeting ahead of the Turkey series. It all gets underway on Sunday the 15th with

KINGDOM WHEELBLASTERS FUNDRAISER THE HIGHLIGHT AT THE TRACK: The Kingdom Wheelblasters are holding a fundraising night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Saturday night. This is an important night for this multi wheelchair sports club and all support will be greatly appreciated. On Friday night there is the final of the Paul Reidy Construction A3 plus the semi-finals of the Steve Kennedy Memorial stake. The SIS Racing is on as normal on Saturday morning at 1034am with 8 races while racing will continue next Tuesday. COURSING COLUMN: The summer is certainly in the past when the coursing season gets underway. This weekend it’s the Desmond Cup meeting in Glin which gets underway today, Friday, with the opening rounds of the Derby Trial Stake which has attracted a star studded field. The All Age Bitch Stake is also expected to be fiercely contested. Coursing starts at 11.30am on Friday and Saturday and at 12 noon on Sunday. Last weekend saw Barefoot Marine get his All Age campaign off to the perfect start taking the Stephen Fuller Memorial Cup in Kilflynn. 64 dogs took part in the Oaks Trial Stake with Ballymac Meena taking the win. Barrack Bruce was a surprise winner of the Reserve Derby Trial while the Three Stake Duffer was won by Straight Legs. The Working Members Stake went to Boomtown Faboo. NO BOTHER FOR GARVEYS WHEN THEY WENT INTO THE WEST: MAREE 74 GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS 87: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors made it two wins from three in the Super League with a 13-point win over Maree in Oranmore on Saturday night. In a repeat of last year’s Champions Trophy quarter final, the Warriors led throughout but were fully tested by the Super League newcomers before finally winning out by 87-74. The opening quarter was evenly contested and by the buzzer Kieran Donaghy’s 3 from 4 from the free throw helped them lead 23-20. Warriors continued to lead at the half with Fergal O’Sullivan, Bogdanovic, Pantovic and Donaghy all on the mark as it ended 43-32. A dramatic third quarter saw the Warriors build up a 15 point lead with Trae Pemberton assisting Eoin Quigley and Pa McCarthy for early scores with one particularly memorable effort from McCarthy after a slick interchange of passes. Maree tried to stay in touch and at the end of the third quarter it was 53-37 to the Tralee side.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Some poor discipline from the Warriors let Maree back in and while they did close the gap thanks mostly to Eoin Rockall who hit 22 points but Garvey’s always had bit in hand and won on the road 74-87 in the end. The Warriors now await the visit of Moycullen from Galway next Saturday night. The Galway side will be buoyed by their win over Killester last Saturday but the Warriors will be looking to continue their winning run in front of a full house at the Tralee Complex where the game tips off at 8.00pm. Scorers: Warriors: Dusan Bogdanovic 17, Patrick McCarthy 16, Kieran Donaghy 13 Maree: Eoin Rockall 22, Watkins Williams 20, Kenny Hansberry 8, Padraig Burke 8. In other National League basketball news Keanes Killorglin defeated IT Carlow 82-62 in Men’s Division 1 while in the same division Scotts Lakers lost to BFG Neptune 84-79. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: This week in the Lee Strand Boys u12’s St Brendan’s are away to St Mary’s on Saturday at 1pm. In Lee Strand u14 Boys Division 3 they are at home to St Colman’s in Moyderwell on Sunday at 12 noon. The u16 Boys Division 1 side are also at home. They play Rathmore Ravens also on Sunday in Moyderwell at 3pm. The club sides train at the normal times during the week. HUGE WEEK FOR RIAN: Rian O’Sullivan will this week become the first Kerry player to reach the level of playing in the European Championship Qualifiers as he is with the U19 Irish national team in Waterford. We will a report on their three games –Azerbaijan on Wednesday Oct 4th, Greece this Saturday at 7pm and finally Serbia on Tuesday at 1pm. It is a credit to his family, club and county set-up that Rian is doing so well at both country and club level. U15’S AND U17’S GO DOWN: It was a tough week for Kerry u15 and u17 sides as both went down. The 15’s run of three games unbeaten came to an end as they lost out to Waterford 5-3 with Sean Kennedy getting a hat trick for Kerry. They welcome Limerick FC to Tralee this Saturday with a 3.30pm kick-off. The 17’s ended their season when they lost out of the Shield Round 1. The home side lined out without Dillon Robinson and keeper Robert Osbourne and then lost their second keeper Alex O’Connor at the break with a shoulder injury. But credit to Limerick who are one of the most improved sides of the season and deserved their 5-1 win. It was not a good weekend in Tralee in the FAI Junior Cup with Tralee Dynamos, Mitchels Avenue and Tralee Celtic all going out. Classic FC are in the hat for the next round. In the various Denny KDL Leagues Strand Road went down 3-1 to Skelliga in Division 1A while the

Park drew 3-3 with Asdee in 1B. In the Youth League The Park defeated Tralee Dynamos. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: Academy - Dynamos Academy continues this Friday evening, October 6th at Dynamos grounds in Cahermoneen from 6 to 7 pm. The Academy will move to the astro turf pitch at the IT College North Campus from next week (Friday Oct 13) onwards. Don’t forget to bring €2 to cover the cost of pitch rental and lights when we move to the IT College. Academicals: It’s wonderful to see such a large attendance at our Academy every Friday evening our head coach Robin O Day will assist you in any way possible and the club will also provide Coaching lessons for any person who would like to get involved. Those to show some silky skills last Friday evening were Jude Lacey, Cian Fitzgerald, Saoirse O Rahilly, Daniel Moriarty, Joshua McCarthy and Barry O Sullivan. The u14’s put in a good hour against our neighbours The Park who are a bit stronger at the moment. The boys deserve credit for the way they played their game right to the final whistle. Best for Dynamos on the day were Mark Talbot, Donagh Stephenson and Maurice O Connell. Membership and Registration -For those who have yet to do so, may give registration fees €90 to team coach as soon as possible. Rep of Ireland U-19: Congratulations and well done to former club player Rian O Sullivan who has been selected for the international U-19 squad to play in the UEFA qualifiers in Waterford this week. Team of the Week-Well done to both Mark Talbot (U-14) and Washington Solomon ( U-15 ) who were selected on the Kerry Schoolboys/Girls Team of the Week in recent weeks. CAMOGIE NEWS: Well done to the Causeway Camogie u13 team who won the Wallis Arms Challenge Cup competition played in Mallow. They had wins over Killarney, Millstreet and Kilworth. Erin O’Sullivan and her squad really enjoyed their day and played some great camogie. Parnells u13’s were also at the same competition and really enjoyed their games against Mallow, St Fanahans and Millstreet.
