LEGAL CORNER

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Gift Vouchers Gemma is thinking of buying her parents a gift voucher for a weekend away in a hotel for Christmas, her parents would love the break and this seems like a quick convenient hassle free way to avoid the shops during the busiest shopping time of the year. All of us have bought vouchers and gift cards at some stage but do we all know our consumer rights and how many of us have checked the vital small print? First of all the best advice is to spend the voucher as quickly as you can because the longer you keep it the greater the chances that you may forget you have it or even lose it. Check the expiry date on the voucher, as these vary greatly and retailers can be very strict about the timeline offering no value after the time limit even thought it is very unfair, as they have received value through initial payment. If the voucher has no date and the store won’t let you use it then you might have some redress in the Small Claims Court. Check if the store is part of a chain, can you try using it in another store in the chain with a more relaxed policy. Next, check if any fees or charges apply to your gift card. Some gift cards apply monthly charges which will see the value being continuously reduced so when you do get to use it may be less than what it was originally, and this is a major complaint with some cards and does catch many unaware so again checking the small print is vital. It’s important to note too that losing a gift voucher is just like losing cash, the store have no obligation to replace it. When you buy a gift voucher always ask for a receipt, and remember there are other ways to show proof of purchase such as a credit card receipt or debit card statement. Using the voucher quickly also reduces the risk of you not being able to use it if the company you have the voucher for were to go out of business. If a store closes down before you have a chance to use it then you become an unsecured creditor and are some way down the pecking order and subsequently will only be considered for repayment after the revenue commissioners, banks, creditors and staff have been paid, and realistically it may be very difficult to get your money back. In short vouchers and gift cards can be a lovely gift for loved ones but be careful and fully aware of the facts when parting with your hard earned money this Christmas. LEGAL QUIP: It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important. - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

DONT DUMP THAT IPHONE! BLUE TEAM GSM CAN FIX IT!! One of the most popular sights nowadays must be someone talking into their mobile phone and the screen is all cracked ! I personally experience this as a father of 3 kids (15 years , 20 and 22!).All of them carrying iPHONES in their pockets (or should I say in their hands! as it doesnt seem to leave it ) My youngest , Ben , (15) is doing the best job of

keeping his intact ....the other 2 are a disaster !! iPhones seem to be most prone to this (the absence of Gorilla glass maybe ?) but generally as most , smartphones get larger screens then the problem is getting more common . What do you do ? Send it back to Apple or go into one of their stores on your annual trip to the big smoke?

Thats where Adam and his team at Blue Team GSM step in. Based in Barrack lane , beside Pennys in the mall , Adam offers a whole range of services designed on keeping your electronic device fit and healthy . They really specialise in all Apple products , and can carry out a whole host of repairs on your iPhone; Ipod ; Ipad ; Macbooks...from a cracked screen on an iPhone (about €50-60 upwards, depending on model ) to a hard-drive on the MacBook and everything else in between . But they are experts on other brands too , from HTC to Samsungs to Sony Xperias. “We are one of the few outlets that carry a full selection of genuine batteries 4

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Friday 9th December 2016

for all Smartphones , a lot of places just stock generic batteries and these can cause problems down the line “ says Adam “ Shorter battery life , overheating , even damaging your device , could happen “ One of the most popular things to do nowadays is to give your phone a “full service treatment “ and this can breath life back into your sluggish phone . “Most smartphones today are more powerful than computers or laptops of 5 years ago . Yet , people constantly are servicing their computers to keep them going at optimum level and often ignore their phones . “ says Adam . “Our unique Smartphone service will clear all the unnecessary data clogging up your phone , upgrade to the latest operating system and effectively renew your phone , and all at a low cost “ says Adam All repairs and servicing are done by highly qualified technicians and Blueteam Gsm give a secure backup service to all work they do . Recently they have expanded their floorspace and carry

one of the largest selection of phonecases and Drones in Tralee, if not Kerry.” Also they have headphones , Carkits , dual sim phones(ideal for travelling abroad ) and refurbished phones available in their store. So next time you see someone with a cracked screen , send them along to Blueteam GSM in Barrack Lane ....Sorted !! Blueteam GSM can be contacted on 066-7103553 or adam@blueteamgsm.com

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE LADY , BRENDA LEADS 2 MILES, 26 COUNTIES, 26 HOURS. €9,272 FOR THE MERCY. endurance challenge will go towards a new Fluoroscopy X-ray Unit for the Regional Centre for Gastroenterology at the Mercy University Hospital, which will assist doctors in staging and treating patients with tumours in the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver.

September 26th saw 10 brave individuals set out on a challenge that saw them form a team and run two miles in each of the 26 counties in just 26 hours in aid of the Mercy Hospital Foundation. The Back 2 Back Challenge, which was led by Tralee woman, Brenda Doody, raised a total of €9,272, which was officially presented to the Mercy Hospital Foundation on November 25th.

In 2015, Brenda undertook another epic challenge, completing 12 marathons in eight months, raising €30,000 for the Mercy University Hospital, where her husband Pat was successfully treated for oesophageal cancer in 2014.

Back 2 Back was an actionpacked challenge that saw participants kick off their journey outside The Mercy University Hospital at 8am on September 26th, run their first two miles in Kerry, travel the length and breadth of Ireland covering 52 miles on foot, and finish in Cork exactly 26 hours later.

Speaking about the successful Back 2 Back Challenge, Brenda said “Back 2 Back was a challenge that I was able to share with a core group of people who are as passionate about helping the Mercy as

Funds raised by this innovative

I am. Over the 26 hours we formed a strong bond, got a buzz as we arrived in each new county, ran in darkness, ran in light, and formed friendships that will last much longer than those 26 hours. I would like to thank those that joined me, as well as Paddy Wagon Tours, who kindly sponsored the bus

and two drivers Freddie and Eduardo to bring us safely on our journey.” For more information please call (021) 4274076 or visit www.mercyfundraising.ie. Pic. Dominic Walsh

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... NEW TECHNOLOGY TO SCALE-UP STUDENT VOLUNTEERING AT I.T. TRALEE Every year in Ireland thousands of students from our universities and institutes of technology carry out over 100,000 hours of volunteering. IT Tralee and nine third level colleges have now joined forces to develop studentvolunteer. ie - a brand new online resource which matches students’ interests with volunteering opportunities. The portal is the first of its kind globally and aims to enhance students’ awareness of their role and responsibility in solving challenges such as homelessness, social exclusion and our ageing population. “For me volunteering means taking time out and doing something in the hope it will help make a difference, however small, to someone else’s life. Knowing that my work is valued and in exchange getting the chance to observe happiness around me and to experience the same myself is wonderful.. Clodagh O’Halloran, BSc. Health & Leisure Studies (Physical Education), IT Tralee and player for Munster Rugby

Potential users include up to 100,847 (HEA 2015) students across all higher education institutions and up to 8,000 registered Civil Society Organisations. Shortlisted for the 2016 THINKTECH awards, studentvolunteer.ie has been developed under the umbrella of the Campus Engage Network based at the Irish Universities Association. Students at IT Tralee can browse and apply for volunteering opportunities nationally or internationally; manage their profile and volunteering activity online; track volunteering hours; gain recognition and apply for volunteering awards. The value of volunteering is recognised by the United Nations who have designated December 5th as International Volunteer Day (IVD). Volunteering has numerous benefits for students and for society. Ireland’s new National Skills Strategy 2025 focuses on graduate attributes such as high level cognitive, leadership, entrepreneurial, analytical and interpersonal skills.

Volunteering is an excellent outlet for students to test, refine and put these skills into action. These skills are very much valued by employers: “In my role as Managing Director I am always looking for that potential employee that has an extra edge in respect to experience thus I would encourage all students to invest their time volunteering throughout their education and beyond. Niamh Daffy, IT Tralee Alumni, Managing Director CARA National Adapted Physical Activity Centre

Evidence shows that getting out and volunteering can improve individual mental health and well-being. Volunteering is also an excellent pathway for international students in Ireland to integrate into their communities and make new friends. Lisa Holland of The Zip Yard Tralee comments, “We were delighted to support this great cause and to have raised such a significant amount. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... GARVEYS SUPERVALU LAUNCH THEIR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CHARITY FOOD APPEAL Every SuperValu store nationwide is celebrating Local & Irish this Christmas, so with the season of giving in full swing, Garveys SuperValu has launched their annual county Christmas Charity Food Appeal. You too can do your bit locally by supporting your local Garveys SuperValu who has launched their annual food appeal in all their stores in the county. The Charity Food Appeal is held in association with St Vincent De Paul, The Simon Community and The Lions Club. In a true celebration of Local and Irish, this Christmas, SuperValu stores in Ireland will donate in excess of €300,000 to local causes in their own communities. Rolling out across the Garveys SuperValu stores in Kerry , shoppers will be invited to

donate any non-perishable food product, like pasta, cereals etc. from their shop to the appeal, to help with those who are less fortunate. SuperValu is making it easy for shoppers to donate to those deserving families so they don’t face an empty Christmas – just look out for the branded trollies at the entrance to the store until the 23rd of December. SuperValu, Ireland’s leading grocery retailer, values being at the heart of Irish communities. Commenting on the launch of Christmas Charity Food Appeal, Kevin Mc Carthy , Managing Director of Garveys SuperValu said: “Christmas can be a time that puts a lot of families under pressure. Here at Garveys , we value the importance of giving something back to our Irish communities and helping out

in any way we can. So, we’re asking our shoppers to get on board this Christmas and donate what they can through this worthy appeal we have

set up in conjunction with our charity partners – St. Vincent de Paul, the Simon Community and the Lions Club.”

KERRY COMMUNITY AWARDS MAKE A WELCOME RETURN The countdown is on to the all new Kerry Community Awards which make a welcome return for 2017. The awards were officially launched in The Dromhall Hotel by committee chairman Sean Quinlan who also welcomed incoming secretary Helena Switzer of Kerry County Council’s Community Department. Mr Quinlan thanked sponsors and patrons in the commercial and semi-State sector, as well as Kerry County Council, Southern Marketing Design Media and The Kerryman who collectively founded the awards and remain a driving force behind the event. “We will be holding our community awards in April 2017 in The Dromhall Hotel to once again recognise and honour the Trojan work done by volunteers to improve the welfare of communities all too often with little or no funding,” Mr Quinlan said at the launch. “These community workers and 26

carers are among our greatest national treasures and they help bring hope, stability and confidence for the future. Their actions enhance the lifestyle of those who live in those communities and their generosity is beyond question and beyond price,” he added. Mr Quinlan also thanked the Randles family of The Dromhall Hotel for their generous support over the past 12 years. Also speaking at the launch was Bill Morrell of the Kerry Public Participation Network who praised the work of all involved in relaunching the initiative, while The Kerryman Editor Kevin Hughes acknowledged the involvement of Siobhan Griffin of KCC in developing a popular and highly successful community awards brand in Kerry that is nationally respected. Kerry Community Awards started in 2004 when Rathmore Social Action Group collected the overall award. Kerry Community Awards has

There were 11 deserving annual winners – and countless category winners – before the awards took a wellearned break in 2014. The 2017 awards will herald some changes and the

application form will mirror that – for instance entrants won’t have to select a category in which to be entered – but the ethos remains the same, putting communities first. Entry forms will be available in the coming weeks.

CHRISTMAS IS FOR LOVE Christmas is for love. It is for joy, for giving and sharing, for laughter, for reuniting with family and friends, for tinsel and brightly covered packages. But, mostly Christmas is for love. I had not believed this until a small elfin like pupil with wide innocent eyes and soft rosy cheeks gave me a wondrous gift one Christmas. Matthew was a 10 year old orphan who lived with his aunt, a bitter, middle aged woman greatly annoyed with the burden of caring for her dead sister’s son. She never failed to remind young Matthew, if it hadn’t been for her generosity, he would be a vagrant, homeless waif. Still, with all the scolding and chilliness at home, he was a sweet and gentle child. I had not noticed Matthew particularly until he began staying after class each day [at the risk of arousing his aunt’s anger so I learned later] to help me straighten up the room. We did this quietly and comfortably, not speaking much, but enjoying the solitude of that hour of the day. When we did talk, Matthew spoke mostly of his mother. Though he was quite young when she died, he remembered a kind, gentle, loving woman who always spent time with him. As Christmas drew near however, Matthew failed to stay after school each day. I looked forward to his coming, and when the days passed and he continued to scamper hurriedly from the room after class, I stopped him one afternoon and asked him why he no longer helped me in the room. I told him how I had missed him, and his large brown eyes lit up eagerly as he replied, ‘Did you really miss me?’ I explained how he had been my best helper, ‘I was making you a surprise,’ he whispered confidentially. ‘It’s for Christmas.’ With that, he became embarrassed and dashed from the room. He didn’t stay after school any more after that. Finally came the last school day before Christmas. Matthew crept slowly into the room late that afternoon with his hands concealing something behind his back. ‘I have your present,’ he said timidly when I looked up. ‘I hope you like it.’ He held out his hands, and there lying in his small palms was a tiny wooden box. ‘It’s beautiful, Matthew. Is there something in it?’ I asked opening the top to look inside. ‘Oh you can’t see what’s in it,’ he replied, ‘and you can’t touch it, or taste it or feel it, but mother always said it makes you feel good all the time, warm on cold nights and safe when you’re all alone.’ I gazed into the empty box. ‘What is it, Matthew’ I asked gently, ‘that will make me feel so good?’ ‘It’s love,’ he whispered softly, ‘and mother always said it’s best when you give it away.’ He turned and quietly left the room. So now I keep a small box crudely made of scraps of wood on the piano in my living room and only smile when inquiring friends raise quizzical eyebrows when I explain to them there is love in it. Yes, Christmas is for gaiety, mirth, song, and for good and wondrous gifts. But mostly, Christmas is for love.

CHRISTMAS SHORT STORY THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE

It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I, German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and fraternized with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front (a crime punishable by death in times of war). German troops held Christmas trees up out of the trenches with signs, “Merry Christmas.” “You no shoot, we no shoot.” Thousands of troops streamed across a no-man’s land strewn with rotting corpses. They sang Christmas carols, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared rations, played football, even roasted some pigs. Soldiers embraced men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if the top brass forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high. A shudder ran through the high command on either side. Here was disaster in the making: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals on both sides declared this spontaneous peacemaking to be treasonous and subject to court martial. By March 1915 the fraternization movement had been eradicated and the killing machine put back in full operation. By the time of the armistice in 1918, fifteen million would be slaughtered. Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce. On Christmas Day, 1988, a story in the Boston Globe mentioned that a local FM radio host played “Christmas in the Trenches,” a ballad about the Christmas Truce, several times and was startled by the effect. The song became the most requested recording during the holidays in Boston on several FM stations. “Even more startling than the number of requests I get is the reaction to the ballad afterward by callers who hadn’t heard it before,” said the radio host. “They telephone me deeply moved, sometimes in tears, asking, ‘What the hell did I just hear?’ “ You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It gives us a glimpse of the world as we wish it could be and says, “This really happened once.” It reminds us of those thoughts we keep hidden away, out of range of the TV and newspaper stories that tell us how trivial and mean human life is. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really could be different.

THE GOLD WRAPPING PAPER - AN INSPIRATIONAL SHORT CHRISTMAS STORY

Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family’s only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox. Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, “This is for you, Daddy!” As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her. But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. “Don’t you know, young lady,” he said harshly, “when you give someone a present, there’s supposed to be something inside the package!” The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: “Daddy, it’s not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full.” The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there. In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK!

For me, this week has a strong significance, why, because May last year was… a great month really, but it’s also when I completely disregarded all the hard work I did for my 21st. I had a lot of celebrations last year between friends’ birthday s, going out in general, and just not even thinking about the gym or my goals.

reason, I just love turkey burgers at the moment! So this is what a typical day looks like…. Kind of… No I don’t eat a set amount of meals per day, I don’t have 6 small ones or three big ones. I eat according to my schedule and when I feel hungry. What’s really important is the total amount of calories, carbs, fats and protein you consume in a day. If you want to get leaner and lose some body fat, don’t be stressing over meal times and how many times you have to eat. Just focus on eating enough of the right foods and drinking lots of water and the rest will fall into place. BREAKFAST – So my breakfast is only small if it happens before my gym session. I have started working out in the morning and I really enjoy it. If I am doing fasted cardio, it will happen after. So for this day I’m going to have something small as my ‘Breakfast’ before the gym. 2 egg omelette with 1 turkey rasher , 1 baby potato and a spinach rocket mix on top.

POST WORKOUT MEAL

1 Scoop of MyProtein Vanilla Whey mixed with 200ml of Unsweetened Almond Milk.

So, this May I am making a conscious effort to do better. As I said last week, I have goals that I want to stick to. So that means for May, I’m going to make an effort to make 90% of my own meals and not consume much, if any alcohol. With alcohol, I notice that I feel SO bloated and sluggish and tired and just not good afterwards, so why even bother? I’m not saying I won’t have a night out or two, but I’ll just be more conscious. For anyone wondering, yes I eat carbs, and fats and protein. The only food I have eliminated from my diet is cow’s milk which I’ve replaced with unsweetened almond milk. I also don’t eat much red meat, but that’s not for any particular

LUNCH

Bagel slim with lightest Philadelphia, avocado, smoked salmon and an egg. (MY FAVOURITE MEAL)

SNACK

Depending on the day, if I find myself hungry between lunch and dinner I’ll have a snack, maybe a fulfil protein bar because they’re fab! Fulfil Protein Bar.

DINNER

Turkey burger, white baby potatoes or sweet potatoes(depending on what I feel like), laughing cow light and spinach & rocket mix.

SNACK

Again depending on the day, if I feel like something sweet after dinner I’ll have another snack. Glenisk Vanilla 0% fat yoghurt with strawberries, raspberries and dark chocolate. I am not telling you that you should eat what I eat, this is just what works for me. You need to eat according to your weight, height, gender and goals. So if you’re unsure what to eat, go to someone who knows, either a personal trainer or a nutritionist.

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK! This week I’m going to be talking all about FAT and why Fat does not make you fat. Fats are actually awesome. I have started training with a new online coach recently and one of the first things I noticed in my meal plan is that I was being told to eat things such as full fat Philadelphia and Mayonnaise, when previously I had been eating the ‘lighter than light’ versions. For years, decades even, we’ve been fed the lie that the best way to control calories and shed fat is to cut fat from our diet. Since fat contains more calories per gram than protein or carbs, it only makes sense that, in order to lose fat, you need to consume less of it, right? Wrong. Regardless of past success with fatrestricted diets, lowering fat intake doesn’t equate with dropping fat. A little fat could even help make your fat loss more successful!

EATING FAT MAKES YOU BURN FAT

From a biochemical level, low-fat diets don’t make sense. They don’t condition your body to be efficient at burning fat. Instead, they ramp up the enzymatic machinery in your body so it becomes efficient at burning carbohydrates. Lower-fat diets can also have negative impacts on adipokines which impact fat loss. Adipokines are hormones released specifically from your fat cells. One such hormone, adiponectin, is a true fatburning hormone that works to enhance your metabolism and increase the rate in which fats are broken down, curbing your appetite. Lower-fat diets lead to lower levels of adiponectin.

FAT MAKES YOU HAPPIER AND MORE MOTIVATED Omega-3 fatty acids can boost serotonin levels in the brain, helping to improve mood, increase motivation and keep you from devouring a large pizza like it’s your job. 3.5 percent of women and 2 percent

of men have suffered from diagnosed bingeeating disorders, while millions more people are occasional emotional eaters, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health.

FAT MAKES YOUR FOOD BETTER, LITERALLY

Many nutrients including vitamins A, D, E, and K are fatsoluble, meaning that the body can’t absorb them without fat. If your body isn’t absorbing nutrients properly, that can lead to vitamin deficiencies and bring on dry skin, blindness, brittle bones, muscle pains, and abnormal blood clotting. These vitamins are also key to maintaining energy, focus, and muscle health, all of which contribute to a healthy weight. Vitamin E, for example is a powerful antioxidant and helps maintain your metabolism, while the body’s levels of vitamin D predicts its ability to lose fat, especially in the abdominal region. So while you can pile your salad high with nutrient-rich spinach, tomatoes and carrots, you really need to thank the olive oil for sending the salad’s vitamins your way.

Mayonnaise Philadephia Smoked Salmon I eat all of these foods basically everyday, and I’m currently at the leanest I have been in a long time… just sayin!

So now that we’re all aware that eating fat is necessary and should be done daily, in moderation of course, everything in moderation. Here’s some of my favourite high fat foods… Avocado Eggs Peanut Butter

Stress within your comfort zone can help you to perform under pressure, motivate you to do your best, even keep you safe when danger looms. The trouble is modern life is so full of frustrations, deadlines and demand that many of us don’t even realise how stressed we are. Stress is your bodies way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, which rouse the body for emergency action. Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens and senses become sharper. This is known as “fight or flight” and is your bodies way of protecting you. The body’s nervous system often does a poor job between daily stressors and life threatening events when you repeated experience the mobilisation of the “fight or flight” response in your daily life, it can lead to a myriad of health problems.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE SHOPPERS URGED TO BE MINDFUL OF CAR PARK THEFTS THIS CHRISTMAS An Garda Síochána is urging Christmas shoppers to be vigilant of theft in retail car parks this month. The warning comes as new figures show that €400,000 worth of goods was stolen from Irish shoppers’ cars last year. The figures, compiled by the Garda Analysis Service to launch Retail Safety Day, also show that over 50 car park thefts took place each month in 2015. Incidents are most common on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12 noon and 6pm, with incidents rising in December. The average value taken per theft was €600, while the most commonly taken items are cash, electronics, tools and handbags. Launched to coincide with the start of the busy festive shopping period, Retail Safety Day urges members of the public to engage in safe shopping and parking in order to avoid becoming a victim of crime, whilst also improving their personal security. Sergeant Kelvin Courtney of the Garda Bureau of Community Engagement stated: “Customers should be wary while shopping. Always park in well-lit and secure areas. When you leave your car, lock all doors and windows and double check to make sure. Don’t leave property or cash on view, take it with you. Report all thefts and suspicious activities to staff or Gardaí.

“We strongly encourage shoppers to engage in safe parking as over 50 incidents of theft from vehicles at retail car parks occur every month. With an average loss of €600 per incident, many of these thefts are avoidable. Following some of these simple steps will make sure your Christmas doesn’t get spoiled by theft,” said Sergeant Courtney. “There are also over 100 thefts from customers in shops every month. Handbags are being targeted when left in trolleys or hanging on buggies. The handbag itself isn’t always the item that is taken, sometimes objects within the handbag are targeted too and often they are not immediately noticed missing by the owner. Mobile phones are the most commonly stolen object.” Retail Safety Day also aims to raise awareness amongst retailers on ways to prevent business losses from criminal activity. Shoplifting adds 3% to the price of products. The Garda Analysis Service also said that shoplifting at Christmas time last year cost retailers €55 million, while the overall loss in 2015 was €255 million. However, thefts from shops have decreased by 2.7% this year so far, according to the CSO.

The busiest time for thefts from shops are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with almost two thirds occurring between 12pm and 6pm. Sergeant Courtney added: “It’s important for retailers to be reminded that thefts from shops tend to increase from mid November until Christmas. “The four main items stolen from retailers are groceries, alcohol, clothing and cosmetics. It is noticeable that thefts from clothes stores increase sharply just before Christmas and we also see a considerable increase of thefts from pharmacies, largely involving cosmetic thefts, throughout November and December. “Retailers should make it difficult for thieves by improving security around the peak times of these thefts. Two

thirds of all theft from shops happens between 12pm and 6pm, with Thursday, Friday and Saturday seeing the most thefts. Employing more staff at these times, training staff on retail security, displaying high value products away from entrance doors or behind security cabinets, installing and maintaining CCTV systems and ensuring cameras are not blocked by sale signs are just some of the ways retailers can improve their security.” Local Garda clinics will be held throughout the country on December advising the public on their personal safety at this festive time. Meanwhile, An Garda Síochána produced safety information packs for both customers and retailers, both of which are available to download from the Garda website.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE REALLY DRUNK GUY

So I’m at this bar and the guy next to me is really drunk. The bartender has really had enough of him, so I say to the guy, “Come on, guy, let’s go, I’ll drive you home.” He’s pretty drunk and just nods and barks a little. So I pull him out of the booth and he can’t even walk, I’m trying to guide him to the door, and he just keeps falling down. This happens all the way to the car. Anyway, I get him in the car, and I ask him where he lives, he points and I follow his directions. He finally says, here. So I get out, go around and open his door and try to extract him out of my car, and he just can’t walk, keeps stumbling and falling down, I’m doing my best to guide and help him but he just keeps falling down and hitting his head and stuff. I finally get him to his door and I ring the bell. A lady answers, presumably his wife and I say, “I’m sorry Ma’am, but your husband is really drunk, so I drove him home”, she says, “Yeah, Yeah, thanks, but where’s his wheelchair?”

ENGLISH TO BECOME OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE EU

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”. In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! EVERY DAY IN FLORIDA Two elderly ladies, Phyllis and Marge, were driving to a church gathering. Phyllis was behind the wheel while Marge rode shotgun, knitting. Out of the corner of her eye, Marge thought she saw a stop sign flash by and asked herself if perhaps Phyllis had blown past it, so she paid attention as they approached another. Sure enough, Phyllis cruised through the intersection without stopping. “Phyllis! You just ran a stop sign!” “Oh!” replied Phyllis, “Am I driving?”

THE PERFECT HUSBAND

Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the handsfree speaker- function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. MAN: “Hello” WOMAN: “Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?” MAN: “Yes.” WOMAN: “I’m at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?” MAN: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.” WOMAN; “And I’ve spotted the convertible in the colour Ive always liked ! MAN: “How much?” WOMAN: “$65,000.” MAN: “OK, but for that price I want it with all the options.” WOMAN: “Great! Oh, and one more thing. The house we wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $950,000.” MAN: “Well, then go ahead and give them an offer, but just offer $900,000.” WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you!” MAN: “Bye, I love you, too.” The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are looking at him in astonishment. Then he smiles and asks: “Anyone know whose phone this is?”

A MAN ON HIS DEATHBED REQUESTED HIS WIFE, 3 SONS, HIS NURSE AND A CAMERA TO BE SET UP TO RECORD HIS FINAL MOMENTS. WHICH WERE AS FOLLOWS...

To my son, David, I leave the 2 blocks of flats in the East End of London. To my other son, Michael, I leave the 4 penthouses in Chelsea, and finally to my eldest son, Kevin, I leave the big glass building near Tower Bridge.” With that he slipped away. The nurse turned to the wife and said, “I never realised your husband was so wealthy. You and your sons are very lucky.” His wife swiftly replied, “Was he heck! He was a bloody window cleaner!”

I THOUGHT IT WAS POLITE TO OPEN DOORS FOR WOMEN.. But she just screamed and flew out the plane.

WHY DID GOD CREATE MAN FIRST? To give him a chance to speak...

Dublin 4 rebounding from the bust to boom yet again

As much as 71,000 sq m (765,000 sq ft) of

office space is in the development pipeline for Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, the most sought after location for residential, office and hotel projects in Ireland. If all these offices are built, the total office stock in the area will jump by 55pc to more than 195,000 sq m (2.1 million sq ft). The strength of Ballsbridge’s market is reflected in Knight Frank’s latest Dublin office market report, which also identifies the key development land deals since the boom-time ‘Battle of Ballsbridge’. In Q3 2006 Sean Dunne, who earned the sobriquet ‘Baron of Ballsbridge’, paid the equivalent of €195m per acre for Hume House. Then after the market collapse, the Comer Brothers bought the adjoining 2.02 acre former Veterinary College site in 2013 for €22.5m, or the equivalent of less than €11.14m per acre. Earlier this year Irish Life, which sold Hume House to Dunne in 2006, bought it back from Blackstone with planning permission to more than double the office floor area from its present 7,600 sq m (81,804 sq ft) to 16,900 sq m (181,909 sq ft) in a new sixto nine-storey complex. Irish Life paid around €35m, or the equivalent to €29.6m per acre. While that might suggest that development land prices in Ballsbridge had jumped more than 165pc in three years, it should be recognised that demand has also increased for existing offices in prime Dublin locations and indeed Irish Life’s latest Hume House deal reflected a rental yield of 5.4pc. The Comer Brothers are currently developing 12,500 sq m (135,000 sq ft) of office space on the Veterinary College site in a project branded as ‘One Ballsbridge’. These offices are due for completion in Q2 next year and agents are quoting rent of €55 per sq ft. The site will also accommodate retail and leisure facilities in addition to high-end apartments.

Zanzibar Hotel to sell for more than twice €5m guide

The sale of the Zanzibar Hotel development on Dublin’s Ormond Quay is expected to be agreed shortly for a sum in excess of €10m. 58

TRALEE ADVERTISER

T: 066 7122982 or E: traleeadvertiser@gmail.com The figure represents a premium of more than 100pc on the €5m price that had been quoted by CBRE when they brought the property to the market last August. While the figure set to be paid for the former Zanzibar ‘superpub’ premises by its new owners may seem extraordinary, it isn’t surprising given the intensity of the competition for the property, which has full planning permission for the development of an 89-bedroom hotel. Well over 100 expressions of interest were received from hotel operators and investors based in Ireland, the UK, Europe and China, while more than 80 copies of the hotel’s information memorandum were distributed. More than 40 site visits were

conducted by individual parties. In terms of international interest, it is understood Zanzibar attracted the attention of a number of hotel operators, which heretofore had not looked at the Irish market. . Publicans Liam and Des O’Dwyer opened Zanzibar in 1998, just as the Celtic Tiger was taking off. Created with a €3.81m budget, it had a capacity of 1,200 and was part of their Capital Bars group of superpubs, alongside Café en Seine, Major Toms and Bad Bobs. Prior to the crash, Zanzibar had been mooted as part of a plan to develop a 300-bedroom hotel by incorporating it with a site owned by CIE to the rear of its premises.

looking to sell off the portfolio of fashion retailers, four sources familiar with the matter said. They are also looking at options for the sister company that operates the Karen Millen fashion chain which shares the same owners. The companies employ hundreds of Irish staff at more than 60 shops and concessions and are mainstays of main streets and shopping centres across the country. An examinership in 2014 shrank the size of the Irish operations, but also cut debt and rents. In the UK, the chains employ thousands of people. An internal reorganisation last year of Aurora Fashion, a previous holding company, included splitting out the debts of the chains, meaning they could now be sold separately. The Karen Millen arm was previously split out but not sold. The most recent accounts for Aurora Fashion show Irish sales were £32m (€37m) of the group’s £410m (€483m) in the year to the end of February 2015. The entire portfolio ended up under the control of Kaupthing’s administrators after the bank was nationalised during Iceland’s 2008-2011 financial crisis. The Icelandic bank’s domestic operations were spun into a new bank known as Arion Banki, non-Icelandic assets remained with the now defunct Kaupthing. Kaupthing itself ended up with the brands in 2009 after loans it had advanced to Icelandic investment firm Baugur turned sour. Baugur had used the debt to buy Mosaic Fashions - a holding company for its fashion chains. Reykjavik-based Kaupthing filed for bankruptcy in 2008. Its former executives were later charged with fraud in Iceland. The bank did not respond to requests for comment, while the retailers were not immediately available for comment. The bank was never a natural owner of the fashion brands, so a sale has always been inevitable.

Swathe of fashion chains to hit the market next year

Fashion mainstays including Coast, Oasis and Warehouse are being put up for sale as part of an effort to recover money for creditors of failed Icelandic bank Kaupthing. Administrators who control the bank are

TORQUING CARS! UK IMPORTS HEAD FOR 70,000

The number of used imports registered this month is nearly double that for November 2015 as thousands more opt to shop for their latest car in the UK. So far this month, 7,231 second-hand imports have been registered, making it the busiest month this year on that front. It translates into a near-91pc hike on the 3,787 imported last November. The total for the year to date is now around 66,000. If current buying trends continue it looks like overall numbers could reach, if not surpass, 70,000 by year’s end. Based on the fact that 2,944 were registered in December last, and allowing, in the current climate, that an extra 1,000/1,500 are likely to be bought in addition to that next month, then the total would be in the region of 70,000. If so, it would represent an increase of around 22,000 imports in one year - or nearly 2,000 more a month all year. The really big increases have come since the summer’s Brexit vote. This is the third successive month of 7,000+. Who is to say we won’t have a fourth in December? Ford chief Ciarán McMahon reckons the surge of imports has driven down the value of good trade-ins here by €2,000 because dealers have to protect themselves against falling values. • Meanwhile the battle to become ‘Ireland’s best-selling brand’ is entering the closing stages with Hyundai and Volkswagen fighting it out with only a handful of registrations between them. SHAMED SHEIKH’S £1 MILLION LUXURY CAR COLLECTION UP FOR SALE - AND YOU CAN GET THEM AT KNOCK DOWN PRICES

A stunning collection of luxury cars seized from the personal collection of a Middle Eastern sheikh are to be sold in a cut-price sale. The impressive fleet , comprising Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Bentley motors, has arrived at auction following a High Court ruling against their former owner. The 16-strong collection was impounde d by enforcement officers in accordance with a High Court writ. The sheikh, who lives in Chelsea, west London, is thought to have been dispossessed following a financial dispute. Due to their unusual history many of the cars, all of which were UK registered and have unusually low mileages, are being offered at bargain prices. Leading the sale is a stylish red and white 2012 Ferrari F430 F1 Spider valued at £120,000. The F430 has a top speed of almost 200mph and can accelerate from 0-60mph in under four seconds. Another 2012 Ferrari with similarly impressive specifications on offer is a California with an estimated value of £110,000. Both models incredibly have under 500 miles on the clock. Also of note are a handful of Rolls Royce motors, including a 2011 Ghost with under 3,000 miles driven. The Corniche was one of the sheikh’s first car buys and is said to have spawned his fascination with automobiles. With such a low mileage the price of £40,000 is well under the market average. Among the wealth of six-figure sports cars is a somewhat out of place Renault Twizy - a battery powered two seater which the sheikh is thought to have zipped around London in. Completing the sale are three more Roll-Royces, five Bentleys, a Porsche, Range Rover and Desande.

HONEST JOHN ANSWERS YOUR MOTORING QUERIES (DAILY TELEGRAPH) SNOW MOBILE Q: I have a 2007 Mercedes SLK 200 automatic. Someone told me they are a nightmare in the snow as they are rear-wheel drive. Is this true? RG A: It’s true that rear-wheel-drive cars are less capable in snow, and automatics also give you less control. Switch your gearbox into “winter” mode (the W switch next to the lever). This keeps the engine revs low, which will help in snowy conditions. Better still, use the manual function of the gearbox to change gear, staying in as high a gear as you can to keep the engine revs down. If you’re really worried about getting stuck, a set of winter tyres or snow socks will make a huge difference Rear-wheel-drive cars can struggle in the snow, but winter tyres will help

TORQUING CARS! FORD PROMISES SELF-DRIVING CARS WITHIN FIVE YEARS

Exciting times in the motor industry. Ford promises mass produced autonomous self-driving cars without a steering wheel by 2021 for the masses. President and CEO, Mark Fields, said: “We are dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people and not just those who can afford luxury cars.” Mercedes Benz and other manufacturers have tested cars here where the steering wheel must be touched every 60 seconds, but the advancement to a car with no steering means more freedom to work or relax but with the consequent headache for governments and road safety planners. New guidelines will be needed. Will the “driving” licence of the future entail a test of diction to give precise voice commands rather than the dreaded three-point turn? Another upside is that the hefty insurance premiums should become a thing of the past as cars become less accident prone. Also the issue of blame will have to be sorted out if the “driver” does not have a steering wheel. Despite some crashes involving Tesla and some other companies, Ford says that autonomous vehicles are the future. Executive vice president of global production development Raj Nair says Ford has been testing autonomous vehicles for 10 years and now has the software and sensing technology to combine with sophisticated engineering. Ford was revealing the company’s look into the future at a gathering of 2,500 at the production plant in Grenoble where there was a global launch of the new Fiesta which has grown up to almost Focus proportions. It is roomier and brighter and is being hailed as the world’s most technologically advanced small car coming in an expanded range of upscale versions - Vignale, sporty ST-Line, Titanium and Active crossover. It comes with pedestrian protection, the first Ford to get this feature. Active Park Assist with brake interventions prevent low speed bumps when parking hands free. It also has a superior B&O PLAY sound system and updated SYNC 3 connectivity with touchscreens up to 8in. Engines include a 140bhp one-litre EcoBoost, a 120bhp 1.5 litre TDCi combined with a new six-speed transmission. C02 emissions are expected to be as low as 82g/km. The new model will go on sale here in July. Already a new Ka+ has come to the showrooms in time for the January sales

MOTORISTS SHOULD BECOME BLACK CAB DRIVERS WITHOUT HAVING TO LEARN THE KNOWLEDGE, SAYS THATCHERITE INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS

Motorists should be able to become black cab drivers without having to learn the Knowledge in the biggest shake up of taxi regulations for 30 years, according to a Thatcherite thinktank. The Institute of Economic Affairs is proposing a bonfire of regulations and restrictions in the taxi market to increase their number on the roads and slash fares for passengers. Under the IEA’s plans, it would no longer be a requirement in London for new drivers to spend three years memorising routes around the capital. The distinction between private hire vehicles – which have to be booked in advance – and taxis – which can be hailed on street corners - would be dropped. Other changes would see minicab and – rather than just black cabs – being able to wait on taxi ranks for new passengers and drive in bus lanes without being fined. The main requirement to drive a taxi would a clean criminal record and car insurance to protect the driver and passengers. The IEA - which was closely linked to Margaret Thatcher’s ideas in the 1980s - said new mobile phone apps like Uber had “completely transformed the taxi market and rendered the majority of existing regulations redundant”. The IEA said the distinction between private hire vehicles and taxis had been “blurred” because cars booked using the Uber app can be booked from street corners. Mark Littlewood, the IEA’s director general, said: “Current regulation of the taxi market is archaic and needs urgent reform. Much of the new regulatory measures taken have been obvious attempts to obstruct growth within these companies. “Taxis were hailed for spontaneous trips and private hire vehicles (PHVs) had to be pre-booked. Technological changes have rendered that distinction obsolete. “Yet, whilst PHV markets are open and competitive, taxi markets are still heavily protected, with the number of licences capped. Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, said: “We believe the two-tier system of regulation for taxis and minicabs should be maintained. “London’s black cab industry provides a gold standard service for passengers and we don’t want to see our high standards diluted. “At the same time, the number of minicabs in London has more than doubled in London over the last two years, to over 100,000, leading to an increase in both congestion levels, and the number of accidents and incidents involving minicabs. “Failure to strengthen minicab regulations and to allow the industry to “self-regulate” would jeopardise the safety of passengers and other road users.”

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES Kerry’s Aidan O’Mahoney and Tommy Walsh are on the Munster football squad while Kilmoyley’s Tom Murnane is on Anthony Daly’s panel for their meeting with Ulster in MacDonagh Park in Nenagh with the final set for Semple Stadium the following day.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR WE KNOW WHAT WE THINK OF THIS! I am sure Kieran Donaghy won’t mind me paraphrasing his book title ‘What Do You Think Of That?’ . More about his book later but this is about another of his loves- basketball. Kieran has been an integral part of the early success of the newly renamed Garvey’s Tralee Warriors. Having been to all their home games the full house signs prove how popular the basketball team have become since they joined the Men’s SuperLeague this season. When their sponsorship deal with Irish TV was terminated when that company went into examinership there was concern for the future of the team. However there concerns were soon allayed when one of the counties most successful companies Garvey’s came on board as title sponsors. Garvey’s are associated with sponsorships in both the community and sporting spheres and Warriors are delighted that they have now on board for this season. One of the men behind Tralee Warriors Terry O’Brien said that the sponsorship deal with Garvey’s is a great one for the club. “Garvey’s are one of the most recognisable businesses in the county and beyond and we were delighted when they agreed to become our new title sponsors. They have seen our initial success and the ethos we have at the club. And of course the huge crowds we are attracting!” And Terry also wanted to tell those fans that they don’t need to turn up at home games as early as they have been doing. “Our great volunteers on the doors have tweaked the entry of the fans so we are asking them to come around 7.15pm and they will get a seat. It has been great to see so many attending our games in the complex and we want them to have a great experience as basketball is a sport where razzmatazz is important”. One of the most impressive things about attending the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors games is the number of people who are helping out at the games. Many have a long involvement in basketball while others are newer to the game but all are there from well before tip-off and stay until the last of the spectators leave. And that can be a while as coach Mark Bernsen wants his team to stay on the floor after games to meet and greet the fans. So going back to my opening headline – We all know what we think of the new sponsorship by Garveys of the Tralee Warriors. It is one that every sport fan in the county will be delighted to see. It is all systems go now for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors to go on and lift their first silverware!! Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are at home to Templeogue this Saturday night at 8pm in the Sports Complex. DONAGHY WINS AGAIN! Linking the name of Kieran Donaghy to winning is a regular one. And this week he was winning again as his book ‘What Do You Think Of That’? was named the eir Sports Book of the Year. This is a major accolade in one of the most hotly

66

TRALEE ADVERTISER

contested markets of the year with many high profile sports persons having books out in time for the Christmas market. When you see the Kieran beat off competition from the likes of Rob Heffernan and Paul O’Connell it shows how big this win is. The most impressive thing about his book is the honesty dealing with his sporting success and defeats on the football and basketball fronts, his relationship with his father and his dyslexia. The prize was certainly worth winning with cash of e1,500 and e10,000 worth of TV advertising on eir Sport. His book is, as they say, available in all good bookshops and at this time of the year in particular it is important to buy local! AT THE DOGS: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium the highlight is the final of the Greyhound and Pet World A2 current 525 yards plus the second rounds of the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Supporters Club, with four to qualify from each of the three heats. On Saturday night it’s the final of the County Kerry Coursing Club A6 buster stake which is the centre piece of their benefit night. Entries are also been taken for two 12 dogs stakes on Friday December 16th for A3 confined and A5 525 yards for paid up members of the supporters club, the final of which be run in conjunction with the Kingdom Derby on Friday, December 23rd. Santa at the Track: There will be a special visitor at the Track on Saturday December 17th when Santa will visit, courtesy of the Kingdom Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association. BATTLER’S WIN IN LIXNAW: The O’Connell / O’Connor Cup was the highlight of the Lixnaw Coursing meeting and it went to BattleoftheBoyne. Bower Judy continued her great season to date and took the points in the Mickey Murphy Memorial All Age Bitch Stake. Killacolla Jet took the ticket for the Derby with Duarigle Debbie taking the Oaks equivalent. The Railway Bar Stake was won by Be With It, Dromtullabeg claimed the Donal McNamara Stake and Too Late Now was the winner of the Dew Drop In Stake. The coursing season is in full swing and this week there was a mid-week meetings in Old Kilcullen and Glanworth with the weekend action taking place in Newcastlewest starting on Friday. KERRY PLAYERS ON INTER-PROS: The GAA Interprovincial games used to attract huge crowds in the old days when they were run as the Railway Cup with the finals on St Patrick’s Day. That day is now the club finals and the Railway Cup is no more. However while some call for the Inter Pros to be taken out of the calendar when you see the calibre of players putting themselves forward they obviously still enjoy taking part. The semifinals are on this Saturday with Munster meeting Ulster in Parnell Park.

Friday 9th December 2016

CAMOGIE BOARD AGM REPORT: The AGM of the Kerry Camogie County Board heard reports from various officers on a successful year for the sport. The club had success on the field and also was delighted with the success of its big fundraisers the Golden Ticket and the Golf Classic as well as its quiz and church gate collections. The board was very grateful to all who supported these vital avenues of raising money that will go towards development of the sport. The position of Chair was contested between Tom Meehan of Cillard and Fiona Casey from Causeway and it was Tom the won in a close contest. The Vice Chair is Diane Jeffers. Mairead Fitzgerald is taking over as Development Officer from Patrice Diggin who did a great job while the Child Welfare Officer Laura O’Sullivan is also stepping down. She will be replaced at the next MC Meeting. Sarah Leahy will be the Delegate to Munster Council. However as there were no nominations for the position of secretary which is vacant, as Michelle Costello is stepping down after 3 years, the AGM will reconvene on December 12th in Kilmoyley Community Centre. PARNELL’S NEWS: Helmets: The club reminds all players at all levels of hurling that helmets are mandatory. Players not wearing helmets or those not meeting the standard or are modified are not covered under the terms of the GAA Player Injury fund. The AGM: At the AGM the delegates were delighted with the success of many of the teams this year. Teams were also involved in Munster activities and in many tournaments and all are looking forward to the new season. Smoke Free Clubs: Parnells are looking for the thoughts of members on the GAA’s incoming policy of clubs going smoke free. The plan by the Government is to smoke-free by 2025 with GAA clubs being part of the strategy. I have to say I am really not sure if this going to happen. NEW HURLING BOSS SOUGHT: Kerry hurling is on the look-out for a new management team after the resignation of Ciaran Carey. While his public statement was that this was being done due to ‘increased work commitments’ local media say that his resignation comes about following a meeting of some of the players. It seems that a small core of players were critical of his style and plans for the coming season. While Carey had no option but to step if they players didn’t want him it does make supporters worry about the future with the team set to play their opening game in the Munster Senior League on January 8th. When players move against a manager it can lead to difficulties going forward and does put pressure on the players to deliver. We will watch developments with interest. NA GAEIL TO REPRESENT KERRY: The Munster semi-finals of Scor na nOg takes place this Sunday in Cashel with participants looking for places in the Munster final, set for the Community Hall, Ovens on Sunday January 2nd. Na Gaeil from Tralee are representing St Brendan’s Board in the Leiru (Novelty Act). Those involved are Anne O’Sullivan, Dearbhla Ni Choirc, Barry Staunton, Joshua Roche, John Costello and Liam Og Mac Clochaire. We wish them the best of luck in the semi-finals. Well done to club member Donagh McMahon who won the Fr Pat Horgan Perpetual Trophy at the Monsiginor Hugh O’Flaherty Weekend. His poem Man’s Achilles Heels was judged to be the winner. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NOTES: Club AGM: The Senior AGM took place at the club on Friday last and was well attended. Our Chairman of 5 years Frank O’Connor stepped down from his position. We thank him for his tireless work for the club over those years and wish him the very best. Stepping into the Chairpersons position will be Haulie Kerins. Haulie thanked Frank and assured all present that he will give the position everything and strives to carry on where Frank ended and bring the club to bigger and better things in the future. We wish him the best of luck in his new position. Breda Dyland stepped down as PRO and Pat Flavin will be taking over this position. Micheál Quirke and Morgan will be staying on in their roles with the Senior team and Maurice Horan was thanked for the work he had put into the team over the last few years. There was no jackpot winner. The next jackpot will be €5,200. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: The clubs Men’s and Ladies senior teams enjoyed great runs in the Jimmy Curran Memorial Tournament, held in Moyderwell. The Men’s team won their tournament defeating Cordal in the final while the Ladies just out to Killarney Cougars in their final. Jamie Lowham was named Men’s MVP with the Ladies award going to Killarney’s Cass Buckley. The club is very proud to host the annual tournament in memory of the late Jimmy Curran, our former Club President, and was delighted to welcome Helen and her family who presented the winning trophies. Boys u18 Division 1: The u18 boys went down to Gneeveguilla in a high scoring encounter with the East Kerry boys taking the win on a 67-56 score line. The first half was a cracker ending 30 points apiece. Both sides hit big three pointers as the games swung back and forth before Gneeveguilla opened their winning gap. For St Brendan’s Micky O’Gara hit 21, John Fok-Seang 20 and Shane McCarthy 16. In other results St Brendan’s defeated Caherciveen 80-49 in Boys U16 Division 1 while in the Boys u14 Division 3 Plate it ended St Brendan’s 33 -55 Kenmare Kestrels. TRALEE’S OVAL BALL TRIALS CONTINUE: Tralee are now bottom of Munster Rugby’s J League Division 2 following another defeat. This time they went down to title chasing Ballincollig 23-15 and that is their 7th loss of the campaign. Tralee tires came from Ben O’Neill and Ronan O’Sullivan, with O’Neill converting the two tries but it wasn’t enough. However there were some positives from the performance and hopefully their will get their reward in the next few games. LOCAL SUCCESS AT HISTORIC RALLY: The Jimmy Devane Trophy for the highest placed KDMC crew on the Historic’s Rally was won this year by Kilcummin father and daughter duo Pat and Tara Looney. Best of the Tralee entrants was Sean Walsh who was co-driving for Louth’s Philip McKribben. They brought their Ford Cortina home in 13th overall and 3rd in class. The Tralee crew of PJ O’Dowd and John Young were amongst the pre-race favorites but it was a day to forget for them. Their newly installed engine in the Talbot Sunbeam failed after 3 stages. In the Modified section Rob Duggan and Ger Conway competed a very successful year when they took the victory in their borrowed rear wheel drive Ford Escort. They just held off the challenge of recent Banna Beach Winter Rally winners Jack Newman and Andrew Brown.
