Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

Chris & Colette

First issue of 2017 comes out on Friday the 6th of January Who would have thought, as little as only a few years ago , we would be where we are no. Tralee has bounced back, grown, matured, again in the last few years. The reason I say “again “ is because Tralee, like the rest of Ireland has seen adversity , albeit in different guises before . As the famous quote from Ghandi reads “Adversity is the mother of progress”.Tralee as a town and society has bounced back , through its business growth, through its achievements, through its endeavours, every day week and month, by its people . Don’t get us wrong , there is still plenty more to do, still daily and weekly challenges ,but take a moment to look back and see where we have come from! And we have grown too! The Tralee Advertiser is an important element in the fabric of everyday life in Tralee. We report, we support, we promote, we encourage... and why? Its all for the betterment of Tralee as a place to live and work. We now publish with pride, a bigger and we hope, better, weekly magazine, and report “Whats happening in Tralee“ as our tag line says! This little publication would in no way exist without you, its readers who demand to read it each week nor without our Advertisers who ensure that we can bring this magazine to you FREE every week. At this time of year, as throughout the year, we urge you sincerely to support them, our local business, to buy local, because thats where a lot of our livelihoods come from...the local economy. If it does well, we all do well! A big thank you to our contributors, who help keep us fresh, current and topical, Geraldine in Siamsa Tire, Rebecca in BexBlah beauty & Fitness, Miriams Legal Corner, Billy from HRI in Tech Corner, Frances in Citizens information, John Drummey in Tralee Chamber Alliance, Joe, Aoife & Niamh from The Barbers, Chef Noel ,Our photographers both the public and the professionals, John and Martin Cleary& Domnick Walsh. Also Pat Harnett for all his in depth Sports analysis and Noel in Kerry Airport. Our backroom team, The Keanes & Co at Kingdom Printers and Rafal, our excellent creative hardworking graphic designer from Expose Design, who both ensure we deliver an excellent publication EVERY week! And to everybody else who send us in photos, articles, poems, stories and so much more, a big thank you. Keep doing it ...we really do appreciate it. We are looking forward to a little break now...50 issues back to back and still here! We start all over again on January 6th with our first issue of 2017 . We are delighted to see our Digital Edition of the Tralee Advertiser grow so well in the last 12 months . This addition to the Advertiser gives everybody the ability to read, on their smartphone or Tablet / iPad, any where in the world, the most recent edition of The Tralee Advertiser and see “Whats really happening in Tralee!”

We hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year Chris & Colette Shortt

DANIEL AND MAJELLA TO DELIVER TV3’S CHRISTMAS DAY MESSAGE. Following on from its inaugural Christmas Day Message last year, TV3 will once again air a special address to the nation on Christmas Day. This year, Ireland’s favourite and most loved couple, Daniel O’Donnell and his wife Majella, will deliver a very special message to viewers all over Ireland. In their speech, the pair will reflect on the year gone by, and remember what is most important, as together we face into the great unknown that is 2017. 2016 will go down in history as a year which saw enormous change. It will also be remembered as a year where

we lost so many dear friends in the entertainment industry, and a year of surprising political change close to home, and of course further afield in the USA. Together, Daniel and Majella reflect on the year that has been and remind viewers about what is truly important on this special day. Commenting on his participation in TV3’s new tradition, Daniel said: “Majella and I were delighted to be asked to deliver TV3’s Christmas Message this year. We hope what we say reaches the hearts of everyone on one of the most special days of the year.”

Daniel and Majella’s Christmas message follows last year’s ‘Queen of Ireland’s Christmas Message’ which saw Ireland’s honorary Queen, Panti Bliss, deliver a joyful Christmas speech to the

nation on Christmas Day. Tune in to TV3 at 3pm on Christmas Day to see ‘Daniel and Majella’s Christmas Message.’

SUPERVALU ANNOUNCED AS TITLE SPONSOR FOR TIDYTOWNS COMPETITION FROM 2017 TO 2021 Mr. Michael Ring, TD, Minister for Regional Economic Development is delighted to announce that SuperValu will sponsor the TidyTowns Competition from 2017 to 2021. Speaking this week , Minister Ring said “SuperValu has been the sole sponsor of this competition for the past 25 years and I am delighted to confirm that my Department and SuperValu will continue to work together to develop and grow the competition over the next 5 years. Together we have a shared vision to build on the strengths of the SuperValu TidyTowns competition and to ensure that it continues to grow and be relevant. This competition has been running for almost 60 years and is stitched into the fabric of so many communities in Ireland and those communities benefit from the tireless work of the TidyTowns committees and volunteers. Given SuperValu’s strong emphasis on working closely with the communities in which they do business and their impressive record in reducing their environmental impact, I think they are an excellent fit for this competition. 12

Volunteering within your own community, for the benefit of your community, helps to strengthen ties and develop a sense of place, a place where people belong. As we look to the 60th Anniversary of the competition in 2018, I am happy that its future is bright.” Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu added “As a family owned Irish business, we are exceptionally proud of our 25 year association with the TidyTowns competition and are delighted to have been given the opportunity to build upon our successful partnership which has helped to establish it as Ireland’s leading community initiative. Given that SuperValu stores are owned by local entrepreneurs, we pride ourselves on being at the heart of towns and villages all over Ireland. The TidyTowns competition has always been a natural fit for us as our continued success depends on vibrant communities across the country. We see the positive impact that TidyTowns volunteers have first-hand everyday and are honoured to be in a position whereby Friday 16th December 2016

we can celebrate their achievements each year. As a company, we want to make the towns and villages we live in, better and healthier places for everyone. Our association with TidyTowns plays a key role in realising this ambition. We look forward to working with the Department and helping to build upon the success of the TidyTowns competition to date by increasing its popularity into the future.” Following a targeted invitation to over 38 companies and a number of sponsorship agencies in Ireland, SuperValu has been chosen as the successful candidate to sponsor the Tidy Towns Competition from 2017 to 2021.

IRISH SHOPPERS BEING CHARGED EXTRA IN UK ONLINE SHOPS The marathon runner who had to pay extra because he had an Irish address - the shopper being charged extra by a UK online trader because she was using an Irish credit card - the holiday-maker who couldn’t hire a car because she had an Irish licence - these are all traders’ tactics which are illegal under EU consumer protection rules. A new EU report out today finds that shoppers still face unjustified discrimination due to nationality and place of residence, with Ireland sending the third highest number of complaints in the EU. (More examples below.) The report looks at the implementation of EU consumer law and finds that business practices such as geo-blocking are still preventing consumers from accessing services, particularly when shopping online. Article 20.2 of the EU Services Directive sets out the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of nationality and place of residence but there are now calls for clearer messages to traders and for stronger enforcement. 14

TRALEE ADVERTISER

A legal adviser for ECC Ireland, Anna Heryan, said: “The Services Directive has been an important step in improving the functioning of the Single Market for services. However, complaints received by ECC-Net confirmed that the principle of nondiscrimination of Article 20.2 has not been effective in combatting unjustified service differentiation and it has not reduced legal uncertainty. Consumers too often face restrictions with no justification while the reasons invoked by traders are unconvincing and lack objective criteria.” In a statement ECC-Net said: “ECC-Net welcomes the European Commission’s acknowledgement that further action is necessary to give effect to the principle of nondiscrimination and develop rules against discrimination based on the nationality or place of residence of consumers. We also welcome the Digital Single Market and the Single Market Strategy initiatives, as well as the Commission’s adoption of the e-commerce package which Friday 16th December 2016

is a major step forward in tackling geo-blocking, making cross-border parcel delivery more affordable and efficient, and promoting consumer trust through better protection and enforcement.” Ireland had the third highest number of complaints received from consumers with 66 Article 20.2 related complaints. The top spot was taken by Austria with 138 complaints, followed by Italy in second place with 68 complaints. The report found that consumers continue to face restrictions and are regularly confronted with refusal to deliver or

higher prices based on their nationality or place of residence. The complaints show that some traders have created artificial barriers and the reasons given for the restrictions applied are often unjustified. The report is the result of a joint project to investigate the work of ECC-Net under the Services Directive and the main problems encountered by consumers. ECC Ireland was the project leader, assisted by a working group made up of ECCs Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK.

TRALEE CREDIT UNION CELEBRATES €200 MILLION IN ASSETS Tralee Credit Union held its 49th Annual General Meeting on Monday 12th of December at the Rose Hotel, Tralee. It’s Board of Directors reporting a very positive and busy year for the credit union with Assets reaching €200 Million and local members’ savings now standing at €174 Million. Tralee Credit Union is now ranked in the Top 5 credit unions in Ireland based on Asset size affiliated to the Irish League of Credit Unions, and the largest community based credit union in Munster. This year saw their biggest growth in lending with 9,256 members taking loans valued at €34 million, a 33% increase on the previous year. The credit union attributed this growth to a return in consumer confidence and their competitive loan rates particularly for car and home related loans. The credit union paid out €13.2m on Car Loans 53% up on 2015, reflecting the fact that car buyers are turning away from PCP finance, in favour of owning their own car. Other loan types such as home improvements and education loans saw a similar increases. Tralee Credit Union is hoping this level of growth in loans will continue in 2017 as a strong loan book means a strong credit union with its main source of income coming from its Loan Book. There was good news for

members as a dividend and loan interest rebate to borrowers were approved. Members approved a 0.25% dividend on savings, while reduced from last year it reflects the rates currently on offer for “on demand” deposits. Recognising the valuable role their borrowers play in supporting the credit union and its income, members approved a refund of 5% of loan interest back to borrowers. This means that every borrower will receive a 5% refund on the interest they paid in the credit union in the year. This refund, on top of the competitive loan rates, free life cover on their loans and the flexibility to repay their loan early without penalty, makes credit union loans very attractive to members. In his report, Fintan Ryan, CEO stated that the credit union was going from strength to strength. Reporting that the credit union was processing about 3,000 member transactions each day, Mr Ryan said that improved opening hours in Killorglin and Castleisland would enhance the level of service to members. We will work with a range of partners, in local, community, educational,

youth and other settings, to ensure that people experience the best of the arts over the next 12 months.”

Arts Council Chair Sheila Pratschke said: “Our grant from Government for 2017 is €65.1 million, which is €5 million more than 2016. Our strategy prioritises the artist and public engagement, and our decisions for 2017 focus on small festivals, individual and emerging artists, community-based practice and work with and for children and

young people. This means more great work will be made by artists and arts organisations for people in every part of the country.” The Kerry-based arts projects that have successfully been awarded funding include the following: •

CALLING ALL SCHOOLS IN KERRY! DON’T FORGET TO ENTER THE BORD GÁIS ENERGY STUDENT THEATRE AWARDS or musical. According to research from Bord Gáis Energy which polled 364 adults on their school play memories, 3 in 4 of those surveyed starred in the Christmas show at school with 97% saying they loved the experience!

With Christmas just around the corner and school show season in full swing, Bord Gáis Energy is encouraging schools and students in Kerry, who have put on a play, concert or musical during the festive season, to enter the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards.

The deadline for entries in all production categories is 27 January 2017 and the deadline for entries in the written categories is 10 February 2017 so now is the time to start thinking about getting your submissions in!

This is the fourth year of the highly successful Awards which are open to primary and secondary school students around Ireland. There are 12 categories ranging from production categories such as Best Overall School Musical, Best Overall School Play, Best Set, Best Costumes and Best Performance in a Leading Role (male and female) to written categories such as Best Short Scene Script and Best Dramatic Review. A new category, Best Original Production, has also been added to the 2017 Awards in recognition of the outstanding quality of original productions entered in 2016.

Shortlisted schools will be invited to a special awards ceremony at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on 17 May 2017. Some schools will even get the chance to perform on Ireland’s largest theatre stage, making it a memorable experience they won’t forget! Winning schools will share a prize fund, and receive a commemorative trophy, picture and plaque for their school. Commenting Irene Gowing, communications manager Bord Gáis Energy said: “With school

Christmas is traditionally a time that schools across Ireland put on a play, concert

plays, concerts and musicals happening all over the country, now is the time for schools in Kerry to start thinking about entering the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards. Our production categories include Best Overall School Musical, Best Overall School Play and Best Original Production and our written categories include Best Short Scene Script and Bets Dramatic Review so there’s something for everyone!” Not only is it really simple for students and teachers to enter this year’s Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards, it is also a great way to recognise the participation

and all of the hard work that goes into a school production or an individual student’s involvement whether that be in their performance, writing skills or costume creativity. To enter the awards, log on to bgesta.ie where you can download an entry form to go with your written or video submission. Completed entry forms should be sent to sta@ bordgais.ie or by post to Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards, Real Nation, Fumbally Court, Fumbally Lane, Dublin 8. Further information and information packs can also be requested via bgesta.ie

GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER...

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PUBLIC HOLIDAYS AT CHRISTMAS Christmas at the barber... Well it’s that time of year again. The festive season is upon us. This includes nights out and of course a visit from Santa, all of which you need to be looking your best for. These are our top picks for haircuts to get you through the party season.

The crop

They say less is more- and when it comes to having hair that looks good with minimal effort, the crop has little competition. The crop basically consists of a short back and sides. It can be a high or medium blend but usually looks best when kept high and tight. The top is cut short but it is full of texture. If you have very straight hair ask your barber to point cut into it to add texture on top. The fringe is worn short. In a classic French crop the fringe can be pushed to the side. However, in a more modern crop the fringe is worn straight down and quite short and severe, but full of texture. This is a great cut for those of you who don’t want to spend ages maintaining your hair, but want style. Style with any matte looking product with a medium to high hold. Boost powder is also ideal for this cut.

The high fade

This year the fades and blends have been extremely popular. At the moment, however, the high fade is leading by miles. The fade can be as long or short as you want it to be. The shorter you go on the sides though, the more dramatic the look. The beauty of this cut is its versatility. The sides can be as long as a number 4 or as short as a 0. The top is the same; it suits all hair types no matter the length. Curly, straight, blonde or black. You can individualise this as much as you want. The styling of this again depends on the top. We are loving matte looks at the moment so a bit of boost powder worked in to your roots might be all you need, along with a good blow dry. We would like to wish all our customers a very happy Christmas and New Year. Thank you for your continued custom, let’s try make 2017 a stylish one.

Joe & Aoife

Question I work full-time, Monday to Friday. What days off will I get at Christmas? Answer Christmas Day (25 December), St Stephen’s Day (26 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January) are public holidays every year. In 2016 Christmas Day falls on a Sunday and St Stephen’s Day falls on a Monday. New Year’s Day 2017 falls on a Sunday. Where a public holiday falls on a weekend, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work. This means that, for example, Tuesday 27 December 2016 is not a public holiday. Your employer can require you to attend work on that day. Your public holiday entitlement for Christmas Day will be one of the following: • A paid day off within a month of the public holiday • An additional day of annual leave • An additional day’s pay Under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, you may ask your employer, at least 21 days before a public holiday, which of the alternatives will apply to you. Your employer should respond to you at least 14 days before the public holiday. In practice, many employers will give employees Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January off in lieu of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – but it is important to remember that this is not an automatic entitlement. You can find out more about public holidays in the Explanatory Booklet on Holidays and Public Holidays (pdf) which is available from the Workplace Relations Commission website, workplacerelations.ie. If you do not get your public holiday entitlement, you may make a complaint under the Organisation of Working Time Act within 6 months of the dispute or complaint occurring. You must use the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie.

Christmas is coming! Advertise with us! HEALY-RAE BROTHERS SAY “BOTTOMS-UP” TO OFFICE CHAIR RACING IN TRALEE IN AID OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL IT’S back and already business people and politicians are in training for Tralee’s third Annual Christmas Office Chair Racing Competition in aid of St Vincent de Paul. Following on from the success of the event over the past two years, the racing will return to Neil Armstrong Way, outside Siamsa Tíre Theatre, from 1pm on Friday 23rd December. Kerry TDs Danny and Michael Healy-Rae, John Brassil and Martin Ferris have already signedup to take part in the event and while Deputy Brendan Griffin will not be present, he will donate €50 to St Vincent de Paul. Shops, banks, hotels, pubs, restaurants, law firms, hospitals, schools, politicians and sports clubs have been asked to take part in what promises to be a hilarious event on the last weekend before Christmas. Anyone interested in taking part or sponsoring a chair can do so for only €50 and all proceeds will go to St Vincent de Paul. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “St Vincent de Paul continues to be inundated with requests for help from people in our community, not just at Christmas, but all year

round and the money raised from this event will help us to help them. This is a fun event to head into the Christmas holidays and wind-down after a busy year.” The rules are simple: All the chairs (which will be supplied) have wheels and in order to win a race, the competitors must keep their bottoms firmly on the seat of the chair and only use their legs to propel themselves forward towards the finish line. Depending on the number of entries, the participants will take part in preliminary heats and ultimately the last two sitting will battle it out for the title - the 2015 winner was Paul Keane from Moriarty Civil Engineering in Monavalley Business Park. Entries will be accepted up to 12pm of the day of the Office Chair Racing on Saturday 23rd December. Please send the name of your Office Chair Racer to John Drummey (on behalf of Tralee Chamber Alliance) - info@ JohnDrummey.ie or Junior Locke, President of the Tralee Society of St Vincent de Paul – SVPTraleeArea@gmail.com. For more information on how to take part, please contact Junior Locke on 087 9667442.

CHRISTMAS RECIPES IT’S ALL ABOUT TIMING !! Christmas Eve

The day is getting closer and the heat is on. Jobs done on Christmas Eve will take the pressure off Christmas Day. • Set the table. A great way to make sure you have everything. • Sort all the cooking and serving dishes, the glasses, silverware and napkins for the dinner. • Put white wines and Champagne to chill. • Remove all frozen foods from the freezer. • Parboil the potatoes and parsnips for 15 mins, cool and keep refrigerated. • Trim the Brussels Sprouts and refrigerate.. • Stuff the turkey. • Get to bed at a reasonable time, always helps to start Christmas Day refreshed and well rested.

Woo hoo, it’s Christmas Day!

With all your food planning and preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy a stress free Christmas Dinner. Don’t forget to delegate - everyone can help out in some way - and most importantly enjoy! Here’s our step-bystep plan for the day - it’s based on eating at 2pm but you can easily adjust for the time you want to eat.

Time Plan

9.30am - Preheat oven to the recommended cooking temperature 10.00am - Start cooking the turkey 10.30am - Take the already prepared starters, vegetables and herbs out of the fridge to bring to room temperature 11am - Start steaming the Christmas puddings 1.15pm - Heat enough vegetable or olive oil to cover the bottom of a roasting tin. Add the parboiled potatoes to the hot oil - and add in a bit of the juices from the meat roasting tin (saving most for the gravy). Allow the potatoes to cook for around 40-45 minutes. Plus start to cook the parsnips and any other root vegetables. 1.30pm - Check the turkey is cooked and remove from the oven. Cover it in foil and leave to rest in a warm place. Start cooking the rest of vegetables - such as brussels sprouts and glazed carrots. Using the meat roasting tin, make the gravy. 1.45pm - Plate up the starter 1.50pm - Carve the turkey and place everything into warmed serving dishes 2.00pm - Time to sit down to eat - enjoy Recipes by

Say goodbye to dentures and adhesives forever! Are you tired of sore gums, ill fitting dentures and messy denture adhesive? Would you love to smile and eat with confidence?

Teeth in a Day (All on 4) is a proven, revolutionary dental treatment for a patient that is missing all their natural

teeth and who is tired of wearing an ill fitting and often sore denture. While there are many options available to people who struggle with an ill-fitting denture, our ‘Teeth in a Day’ (Implant Supported Bridges) offer you the chance to throw your denture away for good and feel the benefits of never having to worry about a denture again. They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’

Restore your smile, your chewing ability and your confidence in just one day. Missing teeth causes bone loss. Significant bone loss can shrink the contours of the jaw bone, causing wrinkled lips and a sunken mouth and chin. Teeth in a Day Fixed Implant Supported Bridges are a durable solution with natural looking replacement teeth. There’s no plate. It’s simply secured on four or more dental implants. This solution stimulates bone maintenance, restores chewing function, and gets rid of the uncomfortable and painful feeling of wearing dentures.

Advantages of ‘Teeth in a Day’ Fixed Implant Supported Bridges (All on 4)

• No more painful and ill fitting dentures • Natural looking smile restored • Fully fixed and non-removable • Chewing ability is restored, can chew all types of food • No more removing dentures or denture adhesive • Prevents further bone loss • Go from no teeth, to fixed teeth in one day • Minimal pain/discomfort during procedure • Recovery time is minimal

Call us today on 066 7123315 for your FREE Teeth in a Day (All on 4) Consultation. 3 Bridge Place, Tralee, County Kerry. Telephone: 066 712 3315 > info@bridgeplacedental.ie > www.bridgeplacedental.ie

"No one should ever go to bed with their teeth in a glass"

Teeth in a Day

How it works

At your free consultation, we’ll take the time to listen to you, address your concerns and questions and fully explain the procedure and the options available to you. If you decide to proceed, a full clinical examination will be carried out by Dr. Colm O’Loghlen including X rays and 3D CT scanning. We are one of only a few clinics in Ireland with a CT scanner on site. This minimises patient inconvenience and allows for the most advanced analysis of your teeth and needs. The full implant procedure is carried out in one day. The implants are placed in the morning and you leave that afternoon with fully fixed teeth having thrown your denture in the bin!

Nervous?

Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Inventor of the Dental Implant.

Testimonials “I am so happy. Colm really has changed my life” “I had sedation – the time did fly! I had 4 implants in my upper jaw. I didn’t feel them going in, and it didn’t hurt at all”

If you’re nervous, no problem, the procedure is pain free, and some of our patients elect to have a IV sedation or a mild oral sedative to complete the treatment.

“My enjoyment of food – the flavour and the texture is just so much better”

LOCAL – Have all your treatment completed in Tralee with Dr Colm O’Loghlen.

“I am so thrilled to show off my teeth – and all my friends and family can see why I went for this option. No way I’d go back. No regrets.”

SAFER – With our own CT Scanning equipment, digitally planning your procedure results in safer implant placement. KINDER – Dr Colm O’Loghlen’s experience, training and technology investment, leads to quicker surgery, reduced swelling and improved recovery time.

We’ve just been honored to be announced as the only accredited All-on-4 implant provider in Kerry and Cork. We’ve been recognised due to Dr O’Loghlens extensive experience.

• Transparent pricing policy • A full range of treatment options to stabilise loose dentures • Tax relief applicable treatment • Sedation available • Payment plan available • Affordable • FREE consultation

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! PARKING TICKET I went to the supermarket today, and I was there for literally 5 minutes. When I came out there was a cop writing a parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, “Come on, buddy, how about giving a guy a break?” He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a pencil-necked fat headed cop. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for worn tyres! So I then asked him if his psychiatrist makes him lie face down on the couch cause he’s so ugly. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windscreen with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket! This went on until he had placed 5 tickets on the windscreen .. the more I insulted him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care. My car was parked around the corner.

HO CHOW CALLS INTO WORK

Ho Chow calls into work and says, “Hey, I no come work today, I really sick. Headache, stomach ache and legs hurt, I no come work.” His boss says, You know something Ho Chow, I really need you today. When I feel sick like you, I go to my wife and ask her for some romance and love , that makes everything better and I go to work. Try it.” Two hours later Ho Chow calls again. “I do what you say and feel great, I be at work soon. You have a nice house too”

A FARMER AND HIS SON GO TO THE BIG CITY...

A farmer and his son go to the big city. They’ve lived in the country all their life, and they don’t really know the wonders that technological process has made possible. In the lobby of a tall skyscraper they see an elderly lady go into an elevator. “Dad, what is that shiny box the lady just went into?” The son asks his father. “I have no idea, my son.” The father says, as they both contemplate the now closed elevator doors. A few seconds later the doors open again. This time a smoking-hot blonde gets off the elevator and walks past the two, winking at them as she goes. 44

The kid walks up and the barber offers him two quarters or a dollar bill. The kid takes the quarters and leaves. “You see that? Every single time! I feel sorry for our future.” says the barber. Curious, the customer chases the kid down and asks, “Why do you take the two quarters? You know one dollar is worth more, right?” “Of course I do, but the day I take the dollar, he’ll stop paying me”

GO FOR LIFE GRANT! IN KERRY A total of 58 groups in Kerry are celebrating the awarding of grants to fund physical activity for older people (aged over 50). The Go for Life Grant Scheme from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland is awarding over €16,000 to groups around Kerry. These grants are aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of older people across the country by providing them with opportunities to engage in physical activity and sport. Grant recipients include Active Retirement Groups, ICA guilds, Local Sports Partnerships, Sports Clubs, Family Resources Centres and many others who provide older people with opportunities to get active. Announcing the successful grantees at the Desmond Complex, Newcastle West, in Limerick, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Patrick O’Donovan TD, said: ‘The National Physical Activity Plan, launched earlier this year, sets an ambitious target to get half a million

46

TRALEE ADVERTISER

people more active within ten years. Programmes like Go for Life and the National Grant Scheme will help us reach this target by supporting and empowering older people to get active. The fact that approximately 30,000 people will take part in the activities funded by the grants shows what results can be achieved with a small investment and the record number of applications shows the continued importance of the scheme for local groups throughout the country.’ Karen Smyth, CEO of Age & Opportunity, outlined the importance of providing opportunities for older people to engage in sport and physical activity: “Research shows us that physical activity improves mental and physical wellbeing as well as providing opportunities for social networking. Through our Go for Life Programme and the Grant Scheme we are helping get more older people, more active, more often. Those participating in the Games today are testament to the impact these grants

Friday 16th December 2016

have in local communities, empowering older people to keep fit and healthy on their own terms. The variety of groups who apply and the activities they are engaged in demonstrates the richness and variety of the ageing experience in Ireland.” Speaking at the launch, John Treacy, Chief Executive of Sport Ireland said: “The National Grant Scheme continues to grow in importance, as demonstrated by the record number of groups who have applied this year and the record

number of grants awarded. Increasing participation in sport and physical activity is one of Sport Ireland’s key strategic priorities. We are delighted to partner with Age & Opportunity’s Go for Life Programme, to increase participation among older people in recreational sport activities. I also want to acknowledge the groups themselves, and our own national network of Local Sports Partnerships who provide opportunities to increase participation among older people in sport and physical activity”.

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK!

LASHES

This week I’m going to compile a list for all of you who want to buy a gift for the Makeup Lover in your life but have no clue what to get, I got you covered! Get them anything on this list and you will 100% be in the good books.

MAKEUP BRUSHES:

If it’s makeup brushes you’re looking for, be careful. Just because they’re in a shop and say ‘Professional Makeup Brushes’ doesn’t mean they are. If you are looking to get brushes, I recommend Blank Canvas Cosmetics highly. They have a brand new stand in CH Chemist and they’re absolutely fab! You cannot go wrong with this brand. Other than Blank Canvas, Real Techniques are also a good option. If you’re going to be shopping online for brushes, Zoeva, Sigma and Spectrum are all good brands.

I’m currently OBSESSSSSING over false lashes. If I’m doing my makeup, more than likely I’ll be adding falsies. Most strip lashes are reusable once you mind them so a few sets of falsies is always a good gift. My favourites are… Ardell Wispies, Eylure 120’s, Babydoll 711 and Duo D12 lashes all available in CH, Boots or any other pharmacy. If you’re going online try get Huda Beauty or Velour Lashes from BeautyBay and you will be forever loved.

solutely everyday. Its perfect for day and night time looks. It’s 35 euro and as far as I know you can get it in CH Chemist, if not it’s on the Blank Canvas website. Seriously, get this palette, even if it’s just for yourself.

BROWS

I only use Anastasia Beverly Hills dipbrow pomade on my brows. You can get it on BeautyBay and I also recommend getting the angled brush for application. But if you’re shopping locally, Benefit have amazing brow products that they launched this year!

EYESHADOW

There are sooooo many eyeshadows I could talk about but, I’m just going to mention one amazing palette to make your life easier. If you can, get the Blank Canvas Master Series Palette One. It’s my all time favourite eyeshadow palette. I use it ab-

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK AND HAVE MOST OF YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DONE I cannot believe this is my final fitness post of 2016, absolutely crazy.

I learned SO much about fitness in 2016 and I hope I shared a lot of that new knowledge with all of you. I have a new found love for the gym and nutrition in general. I’m all about that balanced lifestyle and towards the second half of 2016 I definitely got the balance down. This time last year I was in a TOTALLY different frame of mind fitness wise. It was not a good place, whatsoever, at all. Since last January, weighing my absolute heaviest, I have lost in and around 4 stone, which is 56 pounds. I did it the right way, no crazy diets, no cutting food groups, no endless running on the treadmill, none of that. I started myself using bits of plans I had received from personal trainers I’ve worked with over the years. Then I got to my first mini goal of my 22nd birthday in April, that’s always the easy part, I have done that for the past 2 or 3 years. But I was sick of just getting to my birthday and going backwards after that. So I decided to get an online personal trainer Rob Lipsett. Best decision I ever made. Rob gave me all the right tools and information to guide me in

50

TRALEE ADVERTISER

what I wanted to achieve. I did Rob’s 12 week online coaching from May to July and then kept following that plan until I went on holidays in September. When I was on my holidays I ate and drank whatever I felt like, absolutely no restrictions. After the week I was to 6 or 7 pounds, but I knew that was just bloating dehydration and water weight, I was back to my pre holiday weight within a week. In october again I just worked off the plan Rob had given me but I was doing it all myself and I didn’t know what to change up to keep seeing results. So I decided to enlist the help of another online coach Recalibrated bodies, Daniel and Amanda. I knew if I didn’t that it would be too easy to fall into the “Christmas is coming” mode in November. I need to be accountable to someone. I’m still working with Recalibrated Bodies and I’m absolutely loving it, no restrictions, my favourite foods and killer workouts. But when you add it up the 4 stone I lost was less than 1 pound a week, some people would think this is slow progress and want quick results such as 10 pounds in 2 weeks or something like that. The reality is, all of

Friday 16th December 2016

those “quick fixes” are not sustainable, trust me.

Have I been “eating clean” all year? Absolutely not!! Not one bit, I’ve been eating foods that I like and I’m currently eating over 2,000 calories on training days! I’ve gone out and drank, had hangover days, gone out for meals, brunches, lunches, are dominos, five guys and McDonalds, went on a week long holiday and ate anything I wanted, but I’m still down 4 stone. I’m not saying anything in the above list is healthy or good for you, and 80% of the year I didn’t live that way. There has been a lot of gym sessions, early mornings and meal prep involved. I’m just saying once you know what you’re doing and train and eat right, your body can bounce back better from a dominos now and again.

balance folks! Is it cheap or easy? Absolutely not. I invest in myself(as silly as it sounds). I pay for the gym membership monthly, I pay for a professional online coach to help, I pay for all the right foods. I train 5 or 6 days a week and ensure that I have any food I need prepped. But everything I do now is a hell of a lot easier than struggling to find a dress for a night out when your clothes don’t fit.

So yes, I will 100% be enjoying my Christmas and not worrying about the macros in hot chocolate or Christmas dinner. I won’t be in the gym. But I do have a new plan, paid for and all, starting on the 29th of December. It’s all about

Natural Good Health Monitoring and maintaining your health is key to continuing a healthy, happy, active life. It is important to observe and listen to the messages your body sends, and respond sensitively to them. This brings a sense of achievement and well being. It should not be difficult to enjoy natural good health. We all know that eating a healthy diet DOES make you feel better, controlling your weight ALLOWS you to look and feel better, and keeping fit DOES make you more energetic. Any efforts you make, quickly become apparent, and this gives you the incentive to keep up the good work.

BASIC ESSENTIALS:

Vitamins, Minerals, Fibre and Water are some of the basic essentials of any balanced diet. Making sure your diet contains adequate amounts of all of them should be one of your most important priorities. If your diet is lacking in these then you may choose to supplement with some of the following: ANTI-OXIDANTS: are especially important for health, as they kill oxidants, the bad guys which may cause declining vision, wrinkling skin, poor digestion, lack of energy, worsening cardiovascular health and

52

so on. Anti-oxidants are found in carrots, tomatoes, fruit and vegetables – especially broccoli and peppers. As well as eating these foods, it’s well worth looking at some of the excellent anti-oxidant supplements available, such as CO-ENZYME Q10 (30-60mg per day), or any of the SUPERFOODS, such as WHEATGRASS, SPIRULINA and POWERGREENS (all of which are available in powder or capsule form) VITAMIN B: Low levels of vitamin B can lead to emotional stress, fatigue and irritability. They also help with your tolerance levels and coping capabilities. VITAMIN C: often dubbed the “healing” vitamin. Can help to mend wounds and helps to maintain collagen which helps lubricate the skin so, to a degree, it could be called an “anti-wrinkle vitamin”. Since the need for collagen regeneration increases with age, you require greater amounts as you get older. Vitamin C also helps the body’s immune system to fight infections and allergies. CALCIUM: essential for long term bone health, there are many calcium supplements on the market, and some are combined with other nutrients for better

Friday 16th December 2016

absorption. We are always happy to advise on one to suit your specific needs. FIBRE: Roughage is a particularly important part of any healthy diet; it keeps your gut healthy and promotes regular bowel movements, which helps to prevent the distension and bloating that many people experience. Fibre can also give you the feeling of fullness and satisfaction that may help control your appetite, combat cravings and avoid the dreaded binges. Foods that are rich in fibre include, whole-grains (brown rice, wholemeal pasta) dark green leafy vegetables, pulses (peas, beans and lentils). There are also some excellent fibre

supplements available such as LEPICOL, PSYLLIUM HUSK or MAXICOL – simply mix the powder with water and consume once or twice a day (it is very important to increase your water intake when taking a fibre supplement) These are just a few ideas you might find useful if your intention is to maintain or achieve “Naturally Good Health”. Call in-store and have a chat, as always we are happy to discuss your specific needs Until Next Time, Stay Healthy Deirdre

CHRISTMAS RECIPES Merry Christmas...Where’s the Beef ? Well folks this is my last recipe page of 2016 so firstly I’d like to wish ye all a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year!I hope you have enjoyed the recipes this year, and remember all of the recipes are on the blog traleeculinarygangsters.com. We also have a facebook page again called ‘Tralee culinary gangsters’. This week I am doing an alternative dish to the traditional Turkey & Ham , Goose or Duck... A tasty Aged Rib Eye Roast.

ROASTED DRY-AGED RIB OF BEEF WITH HERB BUTTER

RIB ROAST

• • • • • • •

One 10-pound beef rib roast, chine bone removed 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Sea salt Pepper 2 cups chicken stock 2 rosemary sprigs 5 thyme sprigs

MARJORAM BUTTER

• • • • • • • •

6 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 1/4 cup chopped parsley 2 tablespoons chopped brined green peppercorns 2 tablespoons chopped marjoram 1 tablespoon chopped thyme 1/2 teaspoon finely grated garlic 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper

1. Make the rib roast Preheat the oven to 180°. Set the roast fat side up on a rack set in a roasting pan. Rub all over with the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Add the stock and the rosemary and thyme sprigs to the pan. Roast for
30 minutes, until well browned. Reduce the oven temperature to 140° and roast the meat for about 2 1/2 hours longer, until
an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center of the roast registers 64° for medium rare. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, make the marjoram butter In a small bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Let the butter stand at room temperature 3. Spread the marjoram butter all over the warm roast. Cut
the roast off the bone, then thinly slice

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME AT THE PEARLY GATES..

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. ‘In honour of this holy season’ Saint Peter said, ‘You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.’ The Englishman fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. ‘It’s a candle’, he said. ‘You may pass through the pearly gates’ Saint Peter said. The Scotsman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, ‘They’re bells.’ Saint Peter said ‘You may pass through the pearly gates’. The Irishman started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s underwear St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, ‘And just what do those symbolize?’ The paddy replied, ‘These are Carols.’

IT WAS CHRISTMAS DAY.....

and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner,”What are you charged with?” “Doing my Christmas shopping early”, replied the defendant. “That’s no offense”, said the judge. “How early were you doing this shopping?” “Before the store opened.”

CHRISTMAS GIFT TO A FRIEND...

Me: “Hello, is this the Police?” Police: “Yes. What do you want?” Me: “I’m calling to report about my neighbor Billy Jones! He is hiding marijuana inside logs of firewood in his woodshed” Police:”Thank you very much for the call, sir.” The next day, the Police descend upon Billy’s house. They search the woodshed where the 62

firewood is kept. Using axes, they split open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They swore at Billy and left his property. Soon after they leave the phone rings at Billy’s house: Me: “Hey, Billy! Did the Police come?” Billy: “Yeah!” Me: “Did they chop your firewood?” Billy: “Yep.” Me: “Merry Christmas, Buddy!”

GUY JOINS THE ARMY...

... but they are out of bayonets and ammo. They tell him to run into battle yelling “Bangitty bangitty bang!!! “Stabbity stabbity stab!” Much to his surprise, enemy soldiers are dropping all around him. Then, this really big enemy comes over the hill. The guy yells, “Bangitty bangitty bang!!! “Stabbity stabbity stab!”, but the enemy keeps advancing and mows him down. As the enemy walks over him, he hears him shout, “Tankitty tankitty tank!”

A BALDING WHITE HAIRED MAN WALKS INTO A JEWELRY STORE WITH A BEAUTIFUL MUCH YOUNGER GAL AT HIS SIDE... He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The man said, ‘No, I’d like to see something more special.’

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. ‘Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000the jeweler said. The lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, ‘We’ll take it.’ The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the man stated, ‘By check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds; I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon.’ On Monday morning, the jeweller angrily phoned the old man and said ‘Sir...There’s no money in that account. ‘’I know,’ said the old man...’But let me tell you about my weekend.’ Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066 7122982 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

TORQUING CARS! DISCOVERED: ‘SUPER CHARGE’ BREAKTHROUGH ON ELECTRIC CARS

A major breakthrough in electric car technology is claimed to be capable of slashing charging times from hours to minutes. And one of the experts involved in the development - Dr Brendan Howlin - told ‘Motors’ he expects to see a working model of the new system up and running by the Spring. Dr Howlin, whose parents hailed from Wexford, told Independent Motors: “We hope to have a working supercapacitor by the Spring and then the company will set up a factory to produce them.” He added: “The initial impact on motoring is likely to be as an adjunct to batteries for electric cars, but there is a supercapacitor- powered bus in China already, so the technology is already there.” That all follows research in which he was involved that discovered new materials which represent an alternative to battery power. The work has shown the materials are between 1,000 to 10,000 times more powerful than existing lithium-ion battery alternatives. In other words a supercapacitor. The development could, if all goes to plan, mean electric cars would no longer be restricted by lengthy charge times. Dr Howlin said: “This new ultra capacity supercapacitor has the potential to open the door to unimaginably exciting developments.” But there is some way to go, despite the initial burst of enthusiasm. Ground-breaking research by him at the University of Surrey, in conjunction with the University of Bristol, Augmented Optics Ltd and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Supercapacitor Materials Ltd, has come up with what is described as “a safer, faster charging, more efficient and greener alternative to battery power and supercapacitor abilities as we currently know them”. It could - stress could - “revolutionise the capabilities of appliances that have previously relied on battery power to work”. It is claimed the technology could have a “seismic impact” on transport, aerospace, energy generation and household applications such as mobile phones, flat screen electronic devices and biosensors. Above all it could “revolutionise” electric cars. It is estimated that they could be re-charged as quickly as a conventional tank re-fuel.

DRIVERS: WE CAN’T CHECK TYRE PRESSURE It is surprising to learn that so many young drivers don’t know the basics of You’d have thought they would be more enthusiastic. Yet a third of 17-25 year-olds, according to a survey by Cooper BMW, don’t know how to properly check their tyre pressures - a fundamental requirement. And half don’t really understand the implications of not minding their car. Only 43pc said they were “fully” competent with basic elements such as checking and maintaining oil and water levels. By contrast 68pc of 61-75-year olds knew what to do. Half the younger drivers conceded they check their tyre treads less than once every four months. Frightening. Do we need a system to formally show young drivers how to do these things when they get their licence? And at regular intervals for some time afterwards? It’s basic stuff and we all should be able to do it especially where safety (tyres) is concerned.

RARE FERRARI 330GT DONATED TO AIR AMBULANCE TO FUND NEW HELICOPTER HANGAR

Arare Ferrari donated to the East Anglia Air Ambulance Service (EAAA) looks set to raise an estimated half a million pounds for a new hangar, enabling the team save even more lives. The 1964 Ferrari 330GT is a specially-commissioned Nembo Spyder which was owned by Richard Allen, a racing driver and motoring enthusiast who died in November. Chairman of his family’s car dealer chain, Allen Ford, he raced Anglias in the 1960s and Ferraris in the 80s. Mr Allen went on to compete in the FOC Racing Series in his 328 and also become a director of the UK Ferrari Owners’ Club, which is how he found out about this 330GT Nembo Spyder. The four-litre V12 is said to produce 300bhp and, along with the rest of the drivetrain, is largely unchanged from its vanilla 330GT form. However, the rest of the car has been tweaked by Neri & Bonacini, a Modena-based coachbuilders specialising in transforming Italian supercars into something even more special. The car will go on sale at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford on March 29 2017. Proceeds from the sale will fund the construction of the EAAA’s new bespoke hangar. “Our own hangar next door would mean adding some 180 available shift hours a year, significantly increasing the number of lifesaving missions we could fly each year,” said Patrick Peal, the chief executive of EAAA. 66

TORQUING CARS! ‘DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS’ IS HAPPIEST JOURNEY OF THE YEAR, NEW RESEARCH REVEALS

A new survey, published today, unsurprisingly finds that driving home for Christmas is by far the most enjoyable journey of the year. A huge proportion of those surveyed (86pc) enjoy that drive of anticipation more than any other. And the favourite song to accompany them on the special route home? Far and away it is the ‘Fairytale of New York’ -not ‘White Christmas’ or ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’. A good proportion of those surveyed said they will tune in to the radio (37pc), with 33pc listening to their own playlists. The survey was carried out by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. It found that the Christmas trip home outstripped other ‘enjoyable’ journeys, such as driving to the airport for a holiday and a road trip with friends. Reassuringly, the survey also revealed that safety is a key concern for Irish drivers. Around 50pc highlighted the fact that the most important consideration for them for the Christmas journey was getting home safely. One-third (33pc) are worried about frost and icy roads. Understandably, they are also concerned about the behaviour of other drivers along the way. That was a key concern for 20pc. George O’Connor, managing director of Enterprise Rent-A-Car Ireland, said it is important that people take the Road Safety Authority’s advice on driving at this time of year. It includes: * Never, ever drinking and driving; * Planning your itinerary so you are sure of how you are getting home safely; * Driving at the appropriate speed, and * Being aware of how tiredness and fatigue can affect your driving.

THIS FERRARI HAS GOT THE ‘J’ FACTOR AUTOMAKER ANNOUNCES SPECIAL NEW EDITION AND LIMITS SALES TO A MERE 10 CARS

-heyare only making 10, yes 10, of these Ferrari J50s. And even if you could afford it, the famous marque will only allow one of its “loyal” current Ferrari owners to buy a ‘J’. The stunning-looking car has just been revealed in Tokyo to mark 50 years in the Japanese market (which, I presume, explains the ‘J’). In doing so, it is bringing back the idea of the Targa-roof style they had on cars in the 1970s and 1980s. Power comes from the same 3.9-litre V8 that propels the 488 Spider. But this new J50 has been tweaked to push out a whopping 690bhp. Incidentally, that V8 powerplant won the overall International Engine of the Year Award this year. As of now they are not giving anything away on price (if you have to ask . . .) or performance figures for that matter. Only 10 will be made - and each one will be individually crafted and decked out to accommodate the tastes of the lucky customers. Based on the 488 Spider, the new car has been given special treatment by the company’s Special Projects department. For example, they have lowered the bonnet. And they have added two carbon fibre air channels which, people tell me, echoes the F50. The two-piece carbon fibre Targa roof is stored behind the seats. They also say that the rear has been inspired by “jet engine afterburners” - with the result being four tail lamps and a rear diffuser. The 20ins forged alloys have been designed purely for this car. Ferrari say the bodywork is all new and heralds a radical futuristic design.

THE CARS EXPERTS CLAIM ARE AMONG ‘SAFEST’ FOR 2017

THE prestigious and independent Thatcham Research Centre has announced a list of what it believes to be the safest new cars for 2017. The list comprises those in the running for the What Car? Safety Award. The independent research centre says there are more safer cars than ever making their way onto our roads. The 10 cars are taken from the 2016 Euro NCAP ratings. All meet the award’s strict criteria. Among the assessments they were put through was track-based testing of collision avoidance systems. It was a prerequisite that the cars had to have AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) fitted as standard as well as a Safety Assist technology - such as ‘lane keeping’ which was over and above NCAP’s assessment. All finalists also have pedestrian, low-speed City and high-speed Inter-Urban AEB as standard. They were also judged on ‘market relevance’ and value for money. The 2017 list from Thatcham includes: Alfa Romeo Giulia (pictured), Audi Q2, Ford Edge, Hyundai Ioniq, Mercedes E-Class, Peugeot 3008, Renault Scenic, SEAT Ateca, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Tiguan.(indo Motoring ) 68

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CHRISTMAS 2016 GREETINGS TO ALL: As this is our last publication for 2016 it is appropriate to start by wishing all readers of the column all the happiness you deserve for Christmas and may 2017 bring you everything you wish for. While there is no doubt the country has turned a corner and the economy has improved it is also true that not everybody is feeling the ‘rising tide’. Hopefully at this time of the year anyone who is struggling can get the help they deserve and if you are struggling in any way remember there is nothing wrong with asking. To take the strapline of one of those great charities out there ‘It Is Ok Not to Feel Ok’. But from a sporting point of view it has been another very good year from the elite to the player who just wants to take part. And we must never get to a situation where there is no room for both and all those in between. The work done by sports clubs and the committees and volunteers that run them is very important and vital for the community. And at this time of the year we say thanks to all of them. Running clubs takes huge dedication and in the times we live in times when rules and regulations have become, rightly, stricter. For example the Child Welfare and Garda Vetting processes have been introduced to all sports and from what we are seeing being exposed in the UK this is not a moment too soon. Should you happen to be in a club, or involved in a sport, that has not embraced this new legislation fully then you need to make sure it does – for your own and the members and players protection. The other item that clubs and sports cannot run without is money and we are very fortunate in Kerry that we have so many businesses and individuals who are willing to sponsor our sports clubs and teams. Their contributions from the biggest sponsors such as Garvey’s and Kerry Group to the local shop, small company or tradesman, is much appreciated by all who love sport. And to the players of every level and standard we thank you for the entertainment you have given up throughout the year. And in reality it does not matter if it is 1 spectator or 10,000 sports people will go out and give it their best. And yes there are bad days when the result goes against you. But the good days more that make up for the disappointments. While I am speaking for myself I know all those involved in the sports media in the county will echo this. Thank you to all the sports persons, coaches, administrators and committee members who make themselves available to us media. Without you we could not give the sports the coverage we do. And finally back to where I started – the readers. I hope that you enjoyed each and every column or at least parts of them and found them

72

entertaining and enlightening. Without you there would be no point in me slaving over my keyboard (that was for my editor!!) every week to bring you this column or for all the other contributors to do the same. Enjoy this final column of 2016 and we will see you back in early January 2017 following a great Christmas. And if your club or sport has not been featured then get in your notes or get onto your PRO – we are more than happy to cover every sport that takes place in this great town of Tralee or its surrounding areas. 65 YEARS ENTERING THE WATER: The Tralee Bay Swimming Club has announced details of its 65th Annual Christmas Day Swim. As usual the funds raised will go to the RNLI Fenit Lifeboat. The swim will begin at the traditional time of 12 noon beginning as always with the singing of Jingle Bells. Following this will be the first of 3 dashes into the water. The winter swimmers will probably enjoy a longer time in the water. The Fenit swim is one of the oldest in the country and again it is expected that up to 800 people will take to the water while over 2000 will be cheering them on. There will be lots of hot teas, coffee and soup and everyone is asked to give as generously as possible to the Lifeboat collection as we all know the invaluable work they do. As always safety is paramount for the organisers and full details are on the Tralee Bay Swimming Facebook page. If you are taking part then have a safe and enjoyable dip on Christmas Day. SANTA AT THE TRACK ON SATURDAY: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the semi-finals of the supporters club Kingdom Derby plus the semi-finals of the various supporting 12 dog stakes, kindly sponsored by the Supporters Club. On Saturday night there is an all sponsored card in association with the KGOBA with each race worth e500 as part of a great family night out. Santa Claus will be arriving in a horse drawn carriage and there will be goodie bags for all the kids who meet the Man in the Big Red Suit. There will also be a festive reception with punch for the adults and milk and cookies for the kids. Also entertaining will be a Christmas choir and a gigantic Christmas hamper draw after each race with a total value of e3500. The best dressed Mr and Mrs Claus will win prizes worth e500 and to cap it all off their will be a fireworks display after racing. Family tickets cost e30 and can be booked by calling 1890269969 or the stadium on 061 448055. WARRIORS UNBEATEN HOME RECORD ENDS: GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS 70-79 TEMPLEOGUE:

Friday 16th December 2016

Debuting a Garvey’s Tralee Warriors the game at the Complex against the unbeaten Templeogue was always going to be a difficult assignment. The home side were also lining out without Kieran Donaghy and Darragh O’Hanlon. Once again the hall was packed and from early on it was obvious this was going to be a cracking game. The Dublin Superleague leaders opened a 6 point gap with seconds to go in the first quarter but Darren O’Sullivan drained a shot from inside his own half to half the deficit. (Check out the Warriors Facebook page if you can to see how far out he was!!) Despite the best efforts of all the Warriors players Templeogue were ahead by 15 at the break after a second quarter where some dubious calls upset the home sides concentration. However any thoughts that the Warriors would go down without a fight were quickly banished as they cut the deficit to just 6 points before a timely time-out from Templeogue coach Mark Kennan halted the Warriors momentum. Try as they might in the 4th quarter, with Pemberton hitting 12 points the Warriors tried their hardest to close the gap but it was just a step too far and Templeogue move onto 10 wins from 10 with the Warriors on 6 and 4 from their 10 games. Following the game the frustration could be seen on the faces of the home players and coach Mark Bernsen. While he was proud of his sides efforts he knew that they did not take advantage of all of their opportunities. He told us that “while we battled well, especially in the second half we had chances to close the gap even further and really put it up to Templeogue. We know how good the Dublin side are but in fairness we are not far away from that level and are probably where we expected to be at the start of the season. We have plenty of positive things to work on in the New Year”. Top Scorers for Warriors: Ryan Leonard 18, Goran Pantovic 16, Dusan Bogdonovic 16 and Trae Pemberton 11. They will look to head into Christmas on a high by beating Radisson Blu UL Eagles in the UL Arena on Saturday night at 7.30pm. BUSY TIME FOR ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB: A congregation of over 100 people including friends, families and sponsors attended the St. Brendan’s Basketball Club Memorial Mass in Moyderwell last Friday night. The Mass was in remembrance of loved ones that have died and in particular two former club stalwarts, Jimmy Curran and Bruddy Burrows, who both passed away in recent times. Fr. Tadhg Fitzgerald from St. John’s celebrated the Mass and Mary Ellen O’Connor provided the beautiful music. After the Mass Helen Curran and Alan Burrows unveiled plaques in memory of Jimmy and Bruddy as a tribute to their contributions to the club. Boys U12 Division 2: In the Boys u12 Division 2 it ended St Brendan’s 40 Kenmare Kestrels 16. The Tralee side were physically stronger and were ahead 10-4 after the first quarter. St Brendan’s continued to push on and were up 24-9 at the break and were never in trouble in the second half. The u12’s were back in action on Saturday and were too good for a young Imperials side. While their fellow Tralee players tried their best all the St Brendan’s players got on the score sheet and this helped them to an easy win. In other results the Men’s Division 1 game ended St Brendan’s 68-KCYMS 86, the Ladies went down to the same opposition 56-50 in the Division 2 Cup while in the u18’s Division 2 Imperials were the winner 85-52. The Boy’s 16 Division 1 game saw St Brendan’s win 7441 but the u14 Division 3 side just lost out to

This was a great year for the u14’s winning the County, Central and Town titles. The u13’s also enjoyed a clean sweep so well done to them. The 15/16’s Medal Presentation for the u15/16’s takes place today Friday, December 16th. The club salutes its dedicated mentors who put so much work into the club in 2016 and looks forward to the coming year. Pat takes Stacks top job: Austin Stacks have named the vastly experienced Pat Flannagan as its senior manager, replacing Stephen Stack who stepped down recently. Pat worked with Stephen in 2016 and now takes the reins himself. Pat is expected to name his back-room team early in the New Year. Being the time of the year St Pat’s do extra draws for e30 meat vouchers and enjoying their win this week are Patricia Ryan, Mary O’Mahoney, Noelle O’Connor, T Casey and Breda Kelly. AGM: The club’s AGM was well attended with officers giving a comprehensive review of 2016 which was overall a successful year for the club. All those involved in the club were thanked for their work. All officers have agreed to stay on apart from Jimmy Moriarty who will be replaced as County Board Delegate by Tadgh O’Halloran. The club is always looking for new members to help out in areas like finance administration and coaching so if you have some spare time just contact any club officer. O’Connor followed by Noel Barrett and Michael O’Neill with Terry Egan in 4th and Ken Quillinan winning the +24 section. Margaret O’Donoghue won Round 1 of the New Year Hamper competition. WOULD IT BE CHRISTMAS WITHOUT A RANT? Almost finally sure it’s the time of the year for a rant!! Rant 1: It is hard in some ways to argue against the e6.9 million grant being given to the GAA / GPA over the next three years. The money will go to the countries elite players who do give great enjoyment to the masses. However I am not sure how the club players will feel! As part of the deal the GPA and the Government will develop a programme to tackle mental health problems, obesity, drug and alcohol misuse and gambling using the top GAA players as ambassadors. All very noble but we all know those problems exist in all sports and beyond. So are we expecting similar grants for soccer, which arguably at various ages has more players than the GAA. These programmes should be available to all young players and the FAI, IRFU and other governing bodies on an incremental level depending on membership. Launching this for one sport in a blaze of publicity sends out the wrong message. Rant 2: The Gender Gap: Minister Patrick O’Donovan must have been having a quiet day in the office when he came up with idea of withholding grants until the gender gap is closed. As I sit on a number of committees including the FAI’s Women’s National Committee I don’t believe this will work. People should be elected to committees depending on ability, knowledge, experience and obviously availability. Yes it true that there are no women on the GAA or FAI’s Board of Directors – this will change in the FAI in the New Year as the women’s game is now fully integrated and Niamh O’Donoghue the former Chair of the WFAI will take a seat on the FAI’s Board. Looking at the GAA in Kerry first and very capable women like Bernie Reen and Leona Twiss to name just two have gotten to where they are without gender quotas? And if they want I am sure in the future the top job is there for these or others. Tyrone’s Roisin Jordan will probably have a run at the Ulster Council and again doesn’t need a gender quota to get there. The Minister and all governing bodies are better of spending their time getting the best people possible involved at the highest level possible – male or female. Rants Over!!

Have a Wonderful Christmas and a Brilliant New Year.

ON THE GREEN AT TRALEE GC: In the Men’s section the 12 hole competition was won by Austin Hynes with Martin Ryan second and Denis Reen in third. The Senior Men’s 12 hole competition went to Sean
