Medical Matters TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUMS AND TEETH Have you brushed your teeth? We've all heard these admonishing words from our concerned parents and have often shrugged them off, assuming we knew it all. But, as in most cases, they were right!

Dentistry has made huge advances in the past forty years.

Where tooth loss would have been commonplace for most of the population, we would now aspire to maintaining a functioning dentition into our golden years.

A healthy mouth greatly benefits our general health.

The cornerstone for good oral health is, as our mothers would have advised, good oral hygiene. Even though it might not seem very pleasant, the mouth is very prone to build up of nasty bacteria. It is vitally important that we limit the effects of these bacteria, thus preventing loss of tooth and gum.

This build up is the most common cause of Periodontal (gum) disease. Our teeth are supported by our gums and bone.

They sit in a socket and are attached to bone and gum by a system of ligaments. The inflammation caused by plaque or calculus bacteria results in a breakdown of the ligaments, which, ultimately, could cause the tooth to become mobile and result in its loss. If your gums bleed when brushing/flossing, you are on the spectrum of gum disease. It is important to address this; the good news is that it is treatable. Visit your dentist, get the appropriate advice and follow it!

In brief, to maintain a healthy smile, brush and floss (correctly!) twice daily. Watch out for bleeding, be honest with yourself!

Following this thorough regime should ensure the long-term health for your mouth.

A bacterial film, called plaque, builds up naturally on our teeth.

If this is not removed successfully daily it will calcify to a more stubborn deposit called tartar or calculus.

30 people showed up to clean and weed and sweep. We were delighted to have Noel Keane and staff from Croí Restaurant, Quinlans Fish Restaurant, Aaron from the Rose Hotel, Anne O’Donnell from Coisceim, Catriona Fallon from Siamsa Tire and fair dues to Christinas in the square for giving us bottles of water. Thank you all so very much for coming out on such a sunny evening, I know you had better things to be doing so am very grateful for the helping hands. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...

Tesco to sponsor Family Town fun events at Rose of Tralee TESCO Family Town at the 2018 Rose of Tralee International Festival will be bigger than ever with the introduction of a spectacular Luminarium in Páirc an Phiarsaigh and a new wellness programme for kids with Aidan O’Mahony.

In revealing details of this year’s Family Town entertainment, the Festival organisers are delighted to announce that Tesco will sponsor the activities in Tralee Town Park from Friday 17th to Tuesday 21st August.

The Operations Manager for the Rose of Tralee Festival, Oliver Hurley, said: “Family Town is a major entertainment zone during the festival and we are delighted to welcome Tesco on board as the title sponsor of this fun space for all the family. This year we have put together the most exciting and energetic programme of events ever in Tesco Family Town. An exciting new addition this year is the Well Tent to promote wellness for kids with the help of multi-All Ireland Winner and the first Dancing with the Stars Champion, Aidan O’Mahony.

He will run two fitness events which will be complemented

by Junior Yoga and Zumba and the weekly Junior parkrun.”

The Miracoco Luminarium, the most spectacular new attraction in Family Town this

year, will be located in Páirc an Phiarsaigh for four magical days.

A phenomenon of light, the Luminarium is an inflatable architectural walk-in sculpture offering customers of any age a unique, monumental sensory experience of light, colour and sound. There will be a €5 admission fee to enter Miracoco which will open from 12pm to 6pm daily.

Within Tesco Family Town, spectacular visuals created by Buí Bolg, daily performances from magicians, acrobats and street theatre performers will complement the usual workshops in Arts & Crafts, Drama and pottery. Children can look forward to being entertained by all the characters of the Family show twice daily along with Bouncy world, Dog Shows, Fancy Dress and the Mini Petting Zoo. If you need a break from all the activities, Mums, Dads and the children can relax in the new Picnic Plaza with a variety of gourmet food options, many of which will be healthy, from the Food market.

Tesco will also bring their American Airstream to Family Town over the weekend of the festival where a whole range of tasty treats will be served to festival-goers.

The Manager of Tesco’s store at Manor West Retail Park, Anna O’Connor, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for us to partner with the Rose of Tralee festival this year. We are hoping to add to the fun and magic of the festival with our Tesco Family Town experience making it a memorable experience for all.”

Tesco Family Town in the Town Park, the Miracoco Luminarium in Páirc an Phiarsaigh, FREE music shows from Jake Carter, Sean and Conor Price, The High Kings, Hermitage Green, and many more on Denny Street, The Mall and The Square will make this year’s Rose of Tralee the most entertaining for many years.

The cost of staging the Street Festival during the Rose of Tralee is projected at €354,000 for 2018 and based on last year’s figures, the Festival organisers will have to contribute €113,000 to subsidise the budget.

Contributions towards this year’s street festival from local businesses may be made by cash or cheque, payable to Kerry Rose Festival Ltd, Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street, Tralee, Co Kerry.

Solus Brightest at Bloom is a nod to Ladies Day but is all-inclusive. It is open to ladies, gentlemen, children, people of all abilities and sunny dispositions of all ages!

It is not just about fashion but more about luminosity, brightness and light. It could be a megawatt smile or a radiant glow, a brilliant hat or style down pat, dazzling designer or bargain chic, a child’s delight or love at first sight or maybe even just a sunny disposition. Grace had it all!

53% of Irish Students use CAO Change of Mind Irelands’ most important state exam, the Leaving Certificate, is almost over. Thousands of students in exam centres across Ireland have drawn on years of learning and preparation in an effort to achieve results which best reflect their hard work and ability.

Once the exams are out of the way, attention turns once again to the all-important CAO application process.

Students who have already registered with CAO, have until 5.15pm on Sunday July 1st to submit a CAO ‘Change of Mind’, and each year more than 50% of students avail of this opportunity. Applicants can revisit their Level 8 and Level 7/6 choices, carefully considering both the courses they have applied for and the order in which they have been placed.

IT Tralee’s Vice President of

Research, Development and External Engagement, Brid McElligott advises students, ‘There are thousands of fantastic courses in a wide range of colleges to choose from, with new courses constantly being developed.

It’s important to check the college alert list on cao.ie, where applicants will find new courses introduced by colleges this year, which may not be listed in the CAO handbook, such as the new BA (Hons) in Event Management and the Higher Certificate in Science (Pharmacy Technician) now on offer at IT Tralee.’

Students should also revisit individual college websites, where new ‘direct application’ courses that are not listed on CAO may be available.

For example, this year IT Tralee have two programmes that students can apply for, directly to the IT Tralee

Admission’s Office, up until the 31st of August – a BSc (Hons) in Coaching & Sports Performance and a BA (Hons) in Youth and Community Studies with New Media.

The Freedom Machine There are a worrying number of “ists” in society today – racists, sexists, and even fascists – who’d have thought they’d make such a comeback?! For her debut one-woman show, Elaine Gallagher has decided to focus on a positive “ist” in society – the cyclist!

The Freedom Machine is a hilarious audio-visual stand up show, which celebrates 100 years of women’s suffrage by exploring the revolutionary bicycle. Elaine Gallagher is CoDirector of “The Comeback” feature film and a writer for RTÉ’s “The Mario Rosenstock Show”. This work premiered at Smock Allies: Scene + Heard 2018.

The history of cycling mirrors the history of feminism in a fascinating way. As the call for women’s suffrage grew towards the end of the 1800’s, so did women’s use of the bicycle, and both were seen as threats to the established social order. The notion of women travelling around unchaperoned was at best challenging, and for many unacceptable and dangerous. Is it any wonder when bicycles were a source of unprecedented liberty for so many women, or as Susan B. Anthony called it, “a freedom machine”.

Elaine’s show will chart the origins of the bicycle and its role in granting freedoms to women, including its significant role in female suffrage. It will also explore the parallels between cyclists and women, and motorists and men, i.e. motorist/male entitlement, being subject to abuse and potential violence, lacking the safe facilities that we need in this day and age, and so on. This is a free event (limited spaces) and will take place at O’Donnells, Mounthawk, Tralee, Co. Kerry on Friday the 29th of June at 8pm. For those interested in cycling to this event a group will be meeting at 7.15pm in Tralee town square for a leisurely spin out along the Tralee-Fenit Greenway.

New Team at the Ashe!

EXPERIENCE, expertise and excellence are the key attributes of the new management team at The Ashe Hotel Tralee.

Ruth O’Sullivan has joined the team as Group General Manager for both The Ashe Hotel and Manor West Hotel.

She brings with her to Tralee, 18 years of experience in the hotel industry in Kerry. Prior to taking up her appointment in The Ashe Hotel, Ruth was the General Manager at the world famous Parknasilla Resort & Spa from 2013.

Commenting on her new role in Tralee, Ruth O’Sullivan said: “I was attracted by the challenge that this new role presented. Ruth’s former colleague in Parknasilla, Padraic Hanrahan, will assume the role of Deputy General Manager at The Ashe Hotel. An effective communicator, Padraic has

an extensive knowledge of operations and training with an unwavering determination to deliver exceptional guest experiences while being known for his attention to detail.

Leonie Flaherty, who has been employed at The Ashe Hotel since it first opened its doors in April 2015, has been appointed Group Sales and Marketing Manager for both The Ashe Hotel and Manor West Hotel.

She first worked as a part-time receptionist while studying for her degree in Digital Marketing and Social Media before taking on the role of Sales and Marketing Executive in January 2017. Leonie was recently awarded the Connect Kerry Rising Star Award for women in business.

Good food is a signature trait of The Ashe Hotel from breakfast through lunch to a delicious evening meal and the man tasked with the responsibility of delivering excellence from the kitchen is the new Head Chef, Lukasz Wacnik.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week!

This time of year a lot of people talk about being ‘bikini ready’ or ‘getting ready for holidays’

nuts and eat all the foods I “wasn’t allowed”. You see what I’m getting at here?

I am usually that bit more disciplined coming up to my holidays, as most people tend to be. But some people put so much focus on looking good for a holiday that it nearly takes the fun out of it.

When I am on holidays, I don’t give a crap! Not that “I’m going to wake up and eat Lays by the pool all day”, kind of not giving a crap. Because I know I wouldn’t want to do that and I love eating food.

What I mean by not giving a crap is, I won’t be counting calories or macros, or think about what I “should” or “shouldn’t” be eating. If I want a pizza for lunch I’ll have it or if I feel like fruit for breakfast instead of pancakes I will get the fruit, whereas before I would have had the pancakes anyway because “I’m on holidays”.

Basically what I’m saying is, yes I still try and be as balanced as I can because when I eat well I feel good, but if I feel like chips or chocolate I’ll eat it, and without one bit of guilt. Because yes, I am on my holidays and life is too short!

When I’m coming up to a holiday I do a few things: ensuring I get to the gym at least 5 times a week, keeping my water intake high and generally making good choices when it comes to food.

I don’t go on a mad one where I do two gym sessions a day or insane cardio sessions daily. I don’t give myself a “strict diet” and only allow myself certain foods. I just make better decisions 90% of the time but there will be a dominos, donut and a night out or two in between.

By doing this I don’t feel restricted or that I’m “not allowed” anything so when I get on holidays I won’t go absolutely

There is no point stressing yourself about how you look on holidays. None.

You’re not going to remember how many likes you got on your Instagram bikini picture. You will remember how stressed you were coming up to and during your holiday that you worked hard to pay for.

It’s not worth it.

Once you’re healthy and happy, that’s what matters!

It’s a journey, a process.

When I come back do I go on a week long detox juice cleanse? Absolutely not.

I go back to what I was doing before and trust the process.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

Bang Bang Cauliflower INGREDIENTS

• • • • • • • •

1/2 head cauliflower (cut into bite sized florets) 2 cups panko bread crumbs (Kikkoman brand preferred for even baking) 2 large eggs (whisked) 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (finely chopped, optional, for garnish) 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce 2 teaspoons hot sauce (I used sriracha) 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon honey

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 180c Dip cauliflower pieces in egg and then roll in panko until fully coated and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You will need to use your fingers to press on the coating to help it to stick to the cauliflower bites. Repeat until all cauliflower is coated.

2. Bake for about 20 minutes or until coating is a dark golden brown and crunchy.

3. While cauliflower is cooking, make the bang bang sauce. Add all ingredients into a small bowl and whisk until uniform and no mayonnaise lumps remain. Drizzle over finished cauliflower, reserving additional for dipping. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

A cranky older woman “in her senior years” was arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store. She gave everyone a hard time, from the store manager to the security guard to the arresting officer who took her away. She complained and criticized everything and everyone throughout the process. When she appeared before the judge, the judge asked her what she had stolen from the store. The lady defiantly replied, “Just a stupid can of peaches you old fool.”

The judge then asked why she had done it.

She replied, “I was hungry and forgot to bring any cash to the store.”

The judge asked how many peaches were in the can.

She replied in a nasty tone, “Nine! But why do you care about that?”

The judge answered patiently, “Well, ma’am, because I’m going to give you nine days in jail -- one day for each peach.”

As the judge was about to drop his gavel, the lady’s long-suffering husband raised his hand slowly and asked if he might speak.

TORQUING CARS! HYBRID CAMRY HERE NEXT YEAR AS TOYOTA PHASES OUT AVENSIS

It is hard to believe that 14 years have passed since Irish people could buy themselves a brand new Toyota Camry. It has been genuinely missed - it was always such a poised motor to drive. I liked it because it had a level of refinement that few in its segment could match back then. Now the large family/fleet motor is coming back, and it will be on sale across Ireland in the second quarter of next year.

It will effectively replace the long-serving Avensis, which is being discontinued, though it is important to remember that the Camry is a larger car. A spokeswoman for Toyota Ireland told us: “In line with our ceasing of diesel production for passenger cars in the European market, we have also decided to cease production of the Avensis.” Times are changing fast, as this statement shows. The power source for the eighth-generation Camry will be a self-charging, 2.5-litre hybrid electric powertrain.

Around 19 million Camrys have been bought to date, prompting Toyota to call it the world’s best-selling large saloon. The new car is based on the firm’s new global architecture platform, which is also used on the Prius, C-HR etc. Toyota assures us that driving dynamics have been specifically tuned for European buyers.

DUSTER DUE HERE IN SEPTEMBER

The latest bargain-basement family crossover Dacia Duster is due here in early September. The heavily overhauled motor is generating a lot of interest as people begin to plan their next purchase. The current model has been bought in big numbers since its arrival six years ago due to its low price.

Dacia is saying little by way of price or spec, except to point out that those elements are different in the UK, where it has recently been unveiled, so there isn’t much point in trying to draw parallels. But it is claimed, as you would expect, to be better built than before and to drive well for a car in the lower regions of expenditure.

There is fresh styling and, one expects, extra standard equipment.

It’s all about price, though, and that’s where the challenge lies - to win over repeat and new customers. It has to be seen to be the value it has always been perceived to be. Dacia insists the changes are major while looks are improved thanks to a wider grille and sharper rear. Normally it can be switched off every time you start the car, but the default is “on” because that is how the car is certified for emissions.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR Now all that Kildare need to do is win the game. Defeating the CCCC might have proved to have been a lot easier than defeating the men from the West.

SO HOME ADVANTAGE DOES MEAN HOME ADVANTAGE: As I write this week’s column it has been announced that the Kildare versus Mayo qualifier will be played in Newbridge and rightly so. It really is baffling as to how the CCCC felt they had the power to move the game to Croke Park.

Firstly I don’t buy the explanation that this was for health and safety reasons. The capacity of St Conliths Park in Newbridge is 8,200 and that’s the capacity. How many events are there every year in the country where demand exceeds capacity? Lots I would think. But that’s just life, sometimes you get a ticket and sometimes you miss out.

While it probably won’t be admitted there is no doubt that the powers that be in the GAA saw the opportunity to get 40,000 plus into Croke Park and to make a double header attractive for television and advertisers.

That might be ok if it was in the hands of a committee to pick the venues as it is from Round 4.

However this is Round 3 and the rules of the competition saw the first team out has home advantage, unless they draw a Division 3 or division 4 team.

I have been on both sides of the tables for appeals and I can’t figure how the CCCC did not take the rules into consideration before making the decision to override the draw. Maybe they felt that Kildare would just accept it but they certainly read that wrong. A united County Board, management and players refused from the off to play in Croke Park and said they would be in Newbridge on Saturday night.

They received widespread support from all over the country for their

stance.

Had the GAA CCCC gotten away overriding the draw then this would have provided a precedent that no one would want. However I always believed that the game would go ahead in Newbridge. If the GAA forced the issue then Kildare would have appealed and taken it all the way in an appeal that they would win. It was even stated that those in charge of the qualifiers must look at the rules and be allowed change venues after draws from earlier rounds but I think this will not get through that easily.

Counties know that home advantage statistically gives you a better chance of winning – up around 55 to 59%. This takes into consideration knowledge of the venue and the support of the home crowd.

The GAA could try and put in a rule that they pick all venues but I don’t see many counties, especially those with stadiums that have not received big cash injections for developments that others have gotten.

But that’s for the future. This Saturday Kildare will welcome Mayo to Newbridge and Cavan will take on Fermanagh in Brewester Park (as their home ground of Kingspan Breffni Park is getting a new pitch) while Croke Park will remain closed.

Cian O’Neill and his squad deserve great credit for their stance and for fighting for what was right. It is true that not many ‘ordinary fans’ will get into the ground after season ticket holders and sponsors. But maybe both counties could put up big screens and with the weather due to be great these could make very enjoyable nights.

SUPER 8’S: There has been plenty reviews for Kerry’s win over Cork in the Munster final – their 6th in a row – so there is no need to go over it again. Suffice to say Kerry were in a different class. And now they can start preparing for the Super 8’s where they will take on Galway on the weekend of July 14th and 15th.

The other two teams in the Group won’t be known until after the Round 4 games. It will be the winners of Laois and the team they draw in Round 4 and Fermanagh or the team from Round 4 that defeats them.

I would presume the GAA would rather have the game involving the two teams with the best chance of going all the way as the last games in the Groups. However with the schedule this is not possible as the gap from when the 4 teams are known and the first game of the Super 8 would be too close.

But what it does mean is that the first games in the Super 8 will garner huge attention and will certainly be Kerry’s biggest test to date but one they are well capable of passing.

HUGE GAPS NO GOOD FOR THE U20’S OR MINORS: While it was possibly expected that the Kerry u20’s would have too much for Waterford it was thought that the minor game against Clare would be a little closer. But that was not the case and Kerry easily progressed to another All Ireland quarter final against Connacht opposition.

But has any of these games been any good for Kerry or the sides they hammered. In the u20’s surely it would be much better to have a round robin competition of the Munster counties outside of Kerry and Cork with the top two qualifying to meet the ‘Big 2’. That would give the other u20 teams at least 3 games before a Munster final. Is having these sides train for one game and then being out ever going to improve them – no is the answer.

In the Munster Minor competition again the structure does not make sense. If you lose your first or semi-

final games you are still in while if you lose in the second round – like Cork did again this year – they are finished for the year. And one could say that the decline in Cork’s standards is partly to blame on the lack of seasoned minors coming through.

But from a Kerry point of view they can only beat what is in front of them and they have done this easily on each occasion. There will be bigger challenges ahead but for now things are certainly bright on the Kerry GAA front.

Juniors in without a game: And then we have the situation of the Kerry and Cork juniors took each other on in mid-week without having kicked a ball. The result is too late for this column this week but this is certainly not ideal for either side.

It does seem that the other counties in Munster are not interested in this competition so why not give them a carrot of allowing them to play a certain number – possible 6 – of their u20’s in the competition.

KERRY LADIES GO DOWN BUT STILL LOTS TO PLAY FOR: Up to half time it looked good for the Kerry ladies to retain their Munster title but it was a different story in the second half with Cork dominating to take an easy win in the end.

However there is still lots to play for as they now go into a qualifier system that has 4 groups of 3 with Kerry in with beaten Munster semifinalists Tipperary (July 14th) and Ulster finalists Donegal (at home on July 28th). The top two from each group will go into the quarter finals.

It is important to top the group as it will give you a game against the runner up in another group.

However if you finish bottom there is a relegation issue so a win against Tipperary is vital.

IN THE SMALLER BALL: Hurling folk used to complain about the conditions when the Garvey’s Supervalu County Senior Hurling championship was play.

Any team that loses this weekend can’t blame the pitch except possibly to say it is too that it is too hard!!

As the championship hot’s up there are four big games this weekend all in Austin Stack Park. On Saturday at 5.30 its last chance saloon for either Ballyheigue or Kilmoyley and this will be followed by Ballyduff against Crotta at 7.15pm.

On Sunday first up at 4pm its St Brendan’s against Abbeydorney again with the losers exiting the championship and this will be followed by Lixnaw against Causeway.

AT THE TRACK: This weekend the build-up to the always eagerly anticipated University Hospital Kerry Night at the Dogs continues. This will take place on Friday July 13th and the heats continue this Friday night.

ON THE SOCCER FRONT: Kerry’s participation in the 15’s and 17’s League of Ireland begins again this weekend after the summer break. The 15’s are first in action as they take on Galway at Mountpark from 3pm on Saturday.

The following day the 17’s begin a hectic period when they travel to Cobh Wanderers with a 2pm kick off. Kerry, under head coach Darren Aherne ended the first part of the season on a high when they knocked Limerick out of the Mark Farran Cup. They will face Cork away in the next round provisionally set for the second week of July.

On the local front the busy times continue for The Park as face Killarney Celtic in the Denny Youths League final. The Tralee side saw off the same opposition in the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Cup final replay and will be favourites again.

But at this age it really comes down to who gets their full team out on the night.

The Park’s 17’s went down to Rattoo Rovers 2-1 in the League final. It was Rattoo’s first ever win at this age group.

In the Dominos Pizza Reserve Cup Mitchels Avenue won a cracker 6-5 against Ballymac Celtic and will take on Killorglin in the semis. CG Killarney and Castleisland meet in the other Last 4 game.

KERRY CRICKETERS WIN THE MUNSTER T20 BASH: Kerry enjoyed a great day at the Munster T20 Bash finals at the Mardyke in Cork. In the semifinals Kerry hit 163 for 4 to defeat Midleton who ended on 159 for 7.

In the final Kerry defeated Limerick winning by 35 runs after 20 overs after posting a score of 169 for 6.

SECOND PLACE FOR MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TEAMS IN ATHLETICS NATIONAL LEAGUE: Kerry athletics entered teams into the Men’s and Women’s National Leagues and both teams took second place in the opening round in Templemore. Both squads were back-boned by athletes from Tralee Harriers. The next round is in Athlone on July 8th.

The Tailteann Games took place in Templemore at the weekend and again Tralee athletes brought home a number of medals.

CONOR CRUISES TO ROUND 3 LEAGUE WIN: Killarney Cycling Club’s Conor Kissane continues to thrill fans with his performances in the Club of Kerry Road Race League. He produced another masterclass to win Round 3 hosted by the Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club.

He caught the groups that started well ahead of him on the handicap system and rode clear to take win – his second in the three rounds of the League to date.

Niall Hodges from O’Leary Stone Kanturk was second and John James Griffin from Tralee BC third.

Killarney dominated the underage races with Patrick Galvin, at u16’s,

Shane Galvin at u14’s and Calum Steadman at u12’s the winners of the various races on the night.

The next round of the Road Race League is on June 28th and will be jointly hosted by Tralee Lee Strand and Currow Cycling Clubs.

BOB CASEY MEMORIAL THE PITCH AND PUTT HIGHLIGHTS: 64 players played the Tralee Pitch and Putt course in the Bob Casey Memorial Scratch Cup with Castleisland’s James Dignan from Castleisland winning.

Tralee’s Jamie Blake took third on countbck behind Listowel’s Declan McCarron.

Deerpark’s James Fleming won the Intermadiate section from Tralee’s Padraig Hobbart while the Junior section also went to count back with Tralee’s Tim Scannell just seeing off David Hobbert. Lisa O’Connor won the Ladies prize and is the sole player from the county in this weekend’s National Ladies Strokeplay in Collins County Cork.

The National Stokeplay Qualifiers take place in Castleisland from 4pm this Saturday with a County Board meeting taking place on Monday night in Castleisland from 8pm.

PARNELL’S NEWS: Parnell’s launched their Cul Camps this week with the Summer Camp running from Monday July 9th to 12th from 10am to 1pm costing only e35 per team and bookings are now open.

The Minors will play Kilmoyley in the first round of the 1B Minor County League with St Brendan’s Ardfert, Ballyduff and Lixnaw also in the Group.

The u10 Boys welcomed Lixnaw and both clubs enjoyed the games.

They play Crotta at home this Friday at 6.40pm.

The Kerry 17’s went down to a strong East Cork side and it is these that go onto the semi-final against Kilkenny. Parnells had three players on the starting team in the quarter final.Well done to Ellen O’Donoghue from Causeway who took part in the National Feile Skills Star Challenge at the National Games Development Centre in Abbotstown.

The u16’s went down to Kilmoyley after extra time in the Championship.

AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The Cul Camp will take place next week from July 2nd to 6th with the cost of e60 and reductions for more than one player from the same family. Bookings are now open.

The u6/u8’s and u10’s enjoyed their games last weekend and continue to train on Thursday evenings. The Wednesday evening football in Shanakill continues each week.

The u12’s lost out to Laune Rangers while the u13’s were due to play in the Kellihers Mills Town League. The u14’s take on Kerins O’Rahillys in their Suits Select Town League final at 6.30pm this Saturday with no venue announced at the time of going to press. The u16’s continue their competitive games over the coming weeks.

The u6/8/10’s go to Austin Stacks this Sunday at 11am. The u12’s team 1 drew with Killarney Legion in their last Division 2 game.

Team 2 won away to the same opposition. Team 3 finished with 3 wins to be crowned Division 9 champions.

The u14’s open their Central Region campaign at home to Na Gaeil while the B’s got off to a winning start defeating St Pats.

They play Milltown / Castlemaine next.

The u16’s opened their Division 3 County League campaign at home to Churchill winning 6-07 to 4-08.

They play Ballymac next.

In the u14’s Girls Rose Hotel County League the girls saw off Beaufort 5-06 to 1-10.

BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 12,13, 16 and 25 with the next jackpot being e8,100.

The Academy is now on its summer break until July 22nd. In the final session last week Rachel Colivet was the u6’s Player of the Week.

Chloe Passway won the same honour at the u8’s. Keelin Sinott was the u10’s Player of the Week.

The u12’s took on Ballymac in the County League with the home side taking the win. The u14 Boys faced Kerins O’Rahillys this week.

The Seniors welcome Ballydonoghue this Sunday at 3pm in Round 8 of the County League while the Senior B team’s game has been rescheduled for Tuesday July 3rd when An Ghaeltacht are the visitors in Round 4 of the County League Group A at 7.30pm Cul Camps – these take place between the 6th and 10th of August from 10am to 2.30 with bookings now open.

Well done to all the athletes who represented Blennerville/Ballyard in the County Community games.

KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors take on Spa in Round 8 of the County League Division 1 with a place in the final still up for grabs. The game throws in at 2pm.

The B’s who lost out narrowly for promotion from Division 5 and will now face Dingle in the Shield competition.

The minors went down to Feale Rangers in the preliminary round of the County Championship losing 4-12 to 2-08. This is a young side with many underage again next year.

The club is delighted for all its players who picked up Munster winners medals with various Kerry squads last weekend.

The Academy were out in force last weekend with Adam O’Sullivan Cian Heaphy., Caoimhe Fitzgerald, Nicola and Anna Corridon and Jayden Collins being named as the Players of the Week. The Academy trains again at 11am this Sunday.

The u12’s went down to Ardefert in their final phase 2 County League game, the u13’s lost to Ballymac while the u16’s lost out to Ballyduff in their County League.

In the Ladies section the u12’s took on Glenflesk in the County League final played in Castleisland. The opposition were 2-02 to 0-05 up at the break and they won 4-09 to 1-09. Well done to all the girls and the coaches for the run to the final.

The u14’s lost out to Scartaglin in their County League semi-final going down 2-12 to 2-02.

ON THE GREEN: TRALEE GC – In the competition sponsored by Adam’s Garage Seamus Enright was the winner from Brian O’Leary and Maurice Mulcare.

Fergal O’Sullvan won the Best Gross, Colm Nagle the +18 handicap section and Seamus MacGearailt the 9 hole competition.

The Scramble on Friday was played in amazing weather and was won

by Denis Reen, Paudie Landers and Kevin Maunsel.

In the Landers Leisure Ladies Competition Norann Shanahan was the winner from Catherine McCarthy and Mary O’Donnell third.

In the Expose Waltz competition the winners were Margaret O Donoghue, Annette Dineen and Claire Benner. Second was the team of Liz Grey, Catherine Daly and Noran Shanahan with Laura Rafferty, Gorretti OConnor, Brid Halloran in third.

In the Senior Ladies section the Lady Captain presented her prize to Claire Bonner who won on count back from Kathy Lyons. 3rd and 4th were also decided on count back with Joan Costello just pipping Mary Barrett.

BMW IS SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT BREXIT EACH WEEK.

This week it was in a Financial Times report, with the automaker saying it would have to close British factories where MINI and RollsRoyce cars are made if leaving the EU results in serious supply chain disruption.

BMW customs manager Stephan Freismuth was quoted as saying: “We always said we can do our best and prepare everything, but if at the end of the day the supply chain will have a stop at the border, we cannot produce our products in the UK.”

As a dealer who specialises in older cars, he’s seriously annoyed with so many insurance companies refusing to quote for cover on older vehicles.

He asks a simple question: “Why are a lot of insurers refusing to quote for insurance on a 10 to 20-year-old old car with a new NCT test and in perfect condition?”

He has been selling older cars for 44 years, and insists he is fastidious about preparing them.

But the insurance companies’ reluctance to cover them is, in Ray’s estimation, forcing motorists to drive uninsured, enter into a PCP or loan agreement they cannot afford, or buy a car that’s unsuitable for their needs.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HOUSEHOLD BENEFITS PACKAGE Question I’m in my 70s and live alone. Is it there any support available to help me with my household running costs?

Answer The Household Benefits Package may help with the costs of running your household. The package is available to everyone aged over 70 and to some people under 70. It is paid by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP).

The package includes an electricity or gas allowance and a Free Television Licence. The electricity or gas allowance pays €35 per month (€1.15 per day) towards the cost of either your electricity or gas supply (you cannot get an allowance for both). It is paid to your bank or post office account or as a credit on your bill. You can get the Free Television Licence from the next renewal date of your licence after you qualify for the package.

Only one person in a household can qualify for the package. You must be living in the State all year round, and you will need to show that you are the registered gas or electricity consumer, for example, by providing a utility bill.

People aged between 66 and70 may also qualify if they are getting a qualifying payment, such as the State Pension. If they are not getting a qualifying payment, they must satisfy a means test. You qualify if you are getting Carer’s Allowance and providing full-time care to a person you are living with. You may also qualify if you are getting certain social welfare payments and living alone or living with certain people, for example, a qualified adult or child or with someone who would qualify for the allowance in their own right.

To apply, use form HB1 (pdf) from welfare.ie. The form is also available from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office or from your nearest Citizens Information Service.
