WHAT’S HAPPENING

TRALEE’S ROSE (HOTEL) STARTS TO BLOSSOM! Elegant, warm and friendly. That’s the genre of The Rose Hotel, the new brand and fabulously refurbished Tralee Hotel launched today by owners Dick & Eibhlin Henggeler. Building on the initial investment of purchasing Fels Point Hotel last June, the owners Dick and Eibhlin Henggeler have unveiled what can only be described as a complete transformation of the 165 bedroom hotel, previously known as Fels Point Hotel. Dick & Eibhlin Henggeler, the parents of the late Dorothy, the 2011 Washington DC Rose who sadly passed away two years ago are truly inspirational in their courage, investment and commitment to Tralee. Dott’s Bar has to be visited where you can relax with Irish Whiskey, a cocktail or relaxing meal from the new menu created by Executive Head Chef Odran Lucey. “Dott was so full of life and laughs like so many of our Irish friends and family and she would have absolutely loved The Rose Hotel and especially this bar” - Eibhlin Henggeler Everyone is remarking on the

attention to detail in the new Reception, Restrooms, Lobby, Restaurant and the new gourmet restaurant, The Rose Room. The hotel’s function room, The Lee Suite was renovated before Christmas and already has a huge local support and interest from the local community in terms of parties, dinner dances and weddings. The hotel employs 100 staff and from January – March 75 people from local companies were employed during the refurbishment programme.

The Rose Hotel and everyone involved in this refurbishment. - Dick Henggeler

“This has been an incredible journey and one that Eibhlin and I have thoroughly enjoyed and we are now looking to the future and delighted to cement our long term commitment to Tralee, The Rose of Tralee International Festival and The Dome development. The Rose of Tralee Festival had a huge impact on Dorothy and us - we now have a much larger family because of it. We also like to thank Anthony O’Gara & The Rose of Tralee Team and our incredible team at

For guests, The Rose Hotel delivers quality, comfort, warmth and value with an elegant twist. Mark Sullivan, General Manager - “We care about what really matters to guests – the important things done well; comfortable rooms, great food, friendly and efficiently served without fuss or intrusion; Spa, Gym, Free Parking, free Wi-Fi everywhere, always”

Friday 15th April 2016

This incredible news for Tralee comes at an exciting time for tourism with Failte Ireland just after announcing 8.6M visitors to Ireland last year and very strong indications for 2016. The Rose Hotel is directly located on the Wild Atlantic Way route and a few minutes’ walk from Tralee town centre along the Rose Walk in Tralee Town Park.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Out with the old and in with the new.

John Murphy wants to change his name by Deed Poll, as many of his relations are called John and it was leading to confusion . He had been nicknamed Littlejohn but had enough of Robin Hood jokes. He likes the name Gabriel and he has started to use that name and wants to change his name officially to Gabriel Murphy. Government departments and public and private organisations tend to be very strict in relation to names and identity. This is due to antimoney laundering legislation and the importance of establishing a person’s identity. As a result John Murphy if he wants to be known and recognized into the future as Gabriel Murphy needs to complete a document known as a Deed Poll to formally change his name. While there is no requirement to actually enroll this document in the High Court some state organisations including the National Driving License office usually demand it be enrolled which involves going through the formal process of enrolling a Deed Poll. This means that the Deed Poll is on a public record and a certified copy can be got of this enrolled version. A Deed Poll is simply a document announcing to the world at large that in all records, deeds, documents, actions, suits, proceedings and in all transactions, dealings, matters and things that one wants to be known henceforth as the new name replacing the old name. It is signed in front of a witness who then signs an affidavit that they witnessed the person’s signature. Anyone over 18 can complete a deed poll. If a person is between the years of 14 and 17 years then the teenager can complete the Deed Poll with the consent of both parents. If the child is under 14 years it is completed by one parent with the consent of the other parent. In some stepparent situations a child may want to be known as the name of his other stepsiblings and this may result in a child Deed Poll application. In 2013 court statistics in Ireland show 673 Deed Polls enrolled. In 2014 it was 605 and it tends to average about 500-600 per annum. In the UK 58,000 people in 2011 changed their name by Deed Poll and figures for Deed Polls there are on the increase. In the past few years there were 30 Wayne Rooney’s, 20 Amy Winehouses and 30 Michael Jacksons created by Deed Poll. Lawfun: Strange Deed Poll names- Asda worker Greg Lewis who changed his name to Dr. Pasty-Smasher Omelette for a bet. Michael Pugh and Rebecca Griffin merged their names by deed poll to become Mr. and Mrs. Puffin when they married Chinese parents who called their child @ which means, “love him” in Chinese. Charlotte Price Beauty Therapist is now known as Pink Sparkly And All Things Nice or Pink Nice for short. GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER...

M: 0873931388

SIAMSA TIRE, HOME TO THE NATIONAL FOLK THEATRE

Barber Shop Etiquette

FRI 15TH AT 8PM

PLEASURE GROUND

This week our segment will be dedicated to the Do’s and Don’ts of coming to the barber to make all of our lives a little easier.

Fregoli Theatre “Back then I thought it was perfection, but things change. Oh Yes they do”!

DO’S

• Have clean hair

If you come into the shop with greasy, unwashed hair it makes our job a lot harder. When your hair is dirty it takes on a different shape to that of freshly washed hair. Similarly if you have loads of product on, it makes it almost impossible for us to give you a perfect cut. The result of a cut done on dirty hair or hair with too much product will never be as good as a cut done on freshly washed hair.

TICKETS: €19/16 SAT 16TH AT 8PM

• Have an idea of what you want.

MADAME DE MARKIEVICZ ON TRIAL

You want to leave the shop with exactly the hairstyle you had in mind. If you have an idea but can’t describe it get a picture. Even if you have a few pictures relating to the sides top and fringe. Show us because we will then have an idea of what you want.

• Be patient

The New Theatre Set in a courtroom and a prison cell during the trial in 1917, the audience will be the ultimate judge as they leave the theatre – innocent or guilty?

If you are coming in on a Friday or Saturday and the shop looks busy just walk in and ask. Very often we have lots of customers waiting on one or two barbers. So if it looks busy do ask us as we may be able to seat you straight away.

DON’TS

• Make your young child nervous.

If you are bringing a young child for a haircut don’t talk about it too much or make a big deal of it. Tell them you’re bringing them to make their hair cool. Do not use the word cut as they associate this with pain.

TICKETS: €18/15

• Come in 15 minutes to closing time

If you want a cut like a high, low or medium fade or blend or a drop fade, basically any of those kind of cuts, please don’t stroll in too late. We are not able to do a time consuming cut like that in a limited space of time. We are more than happy to do them throughout the rest of the day.

THURS 21ST – SAT 23RD

TOCHT DANCE FESTIVAL

They were just a few helpful tips to make our lives and you’re lives a bit easier.

We would also say like to say good luck to all our customers doing orals at the moment.

JOB CREATION IN TRALEE MUST BE PRIORITY FOR ALL KERRY TDS WHEN GOVERNMENT IS FORMED

ALL five Kerry TDs must deliver on their election promises to create and maintain jobs in Tralee and to provide a strong voice for the business interests of the county capital, during and after negotiations to form a new Government, according to Tralee Chamber Alliance. A series of meetings are scheduled to take place this week between Tralee Chamber Alliance and Kerry Dáil representatives who will be asked to outline their strategy for job creation in Tralee. The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “Unemployment grew in Tralee, under successive governments, during the Celtic Tiger years and in more recent times. Our local public representatives who may support a minority Government and in opposition, must ensure that job creation remains a political priority. They need to keep job creation in Tralee at the top of the agenda. To achieve this, there must be support for policies that encourage enterprise and entrepreneurship which in turn creates jobs locally.” Tralee Chamber Alliance represents the interests of over 230 businesses across all sectors in Tralee and its members believe that it is imperative that economic recovery and job creation remain at the forefront of the next Government’s agenda and are reflected in policy. A number of challenges pose serious risks to the recovery in Tralee and require immediate focus and investment including increasingly high business costs, skills mismatches in the economy which threaten to halt future employment growth, and insufficient infrastructure investment constraining future growth. Tralee Chamber Alliance welcomed the continued reduction in the national unemployment figures, currently down to 8.6% for the first time since 2008, but he expressed concern that this trend has not been reflected in the recent live register figures for Tralee. “The five Kerry TDs must ensure that policies that can further reduce unemployment are maintained and prioritised by the next Government,” said Kieran Ruttledge. 8

Cause

Hayfever is caused by an allergy to pollen. The common pollen causing Hayfever for Irish people is grass pollen which reaches its highest levels during late May, June and July. Some hayfever sufferers are allergic to tree pollen and may experience symptoms as early as mid-April

Hayfever Advice There are many things a hayfever sufferer can do to help reduce their symptoms: • Check pollen counts each day during the summer. Listen out for weather reports which will often incorporate a warning if the pollen count is high that day. • If the pollen count is high then try to remain indoors during the late afternoon / early evening when pollen levels will be at their highest • Do not hang washing outdoors when pollen counts are high as the pollen will stick to the damp clothes • Wear close fitting sunglasses and rub some Vaseline inside your nostrils to stop the pollen getting into your eyes and nose. • If your hayfever symptoms flare up, shower and change your clothes as you will probably have lots of pollen on your clothes, in your hair and on your face. There are a range of very effective over the counter remedies available from your Haven pharmacy to help treat hayfever. Please speak to our specially trained hayfever adviser or ask your Haven pharmacist if you would like advice on which treatment is best suited for your needs.

Answer If you are not happy with an item you’ve bought online, you should always contact the trader first to make your complaint. If you are not satisfied with their response, you may be able to get help. If your complaint is against a trader here in Ireland, you can contact the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission for advice. If the trader is in another EU member state, you can contact the European Consumer Centre Ireland (ECC Ireland). The ECC may contact the trader and try to resolve your dispute. If this is not successful, ECC Ireland will forward your case to an alternative dispute resolution organisation in the other country. You can also use the new Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform. The online ODR platform is operated by the European Commission for consumers living in the EU. It aims to help consumers and traders settle online disputes without the need to go to court. You use the platform to find a neutral third party (called dispute resolution body) to handle your dispute. You don’t have to pay when you submit a complaint using the ODR platform. However, a dispute resolution body may ask you to pay a fee if it agrees to handle your case. When a dispute resolution body agrees to handle your case they’ll tell you what the rules are, including how much you have to pay. The outcome can depend on the type of dispute resolution body and their rules and procedures. Some decisions may not be binding on the trader. If you disagree with the outcome you might be able to appeal the outcome or take your case to court. Sometimes there may be nothing more you can do.

Breaking Beauty Boundaries

I have recently noticed a change in the world of beauty, a huge change, a positive change, a change for the better – It’s no longer just a girls world. Men all over the world are changing the face of beauty, quite literally. Have you heard the names, MannyMua? PatrickStarrr? BretmanRock? If you haven’t, 1) Follow them on Instagram 2) Prepare to be obsessed. They are the guys absolutely SLAYING the beauty world.

These guys all have millions of followers and are working closely with HUGE brands such as Benefit, Sephora, Tarte, Ofra & Makeup Geek, which is amazing. Recently Benefit flew all three of them to Hawaii for a product launch! These brands are supporting change and diversity in the beauty world, wow! All incredibly talented Make-Up Artists, I go to their social media accounts for product reviews, I recently bought a product due to MannyMua’s glowing reviews. So move over girls, guys are coming up strong and fast and their makeup game is stronger than my brows!

MANNYMUA “I THINK BOYS DESERVE JUST AS MUCH COSMETIC RECOGNITION” With 1.6 Million Instagram followers, a collaboration with Makeup Geek & Ofra cosmetics, and over 1 million subscribed to his YouTube Channel, Manny Gutierrez from San Diego is absolutely KILLING IT. He is a Mac Freelance Artist. I recently binged watched his YouTube videos which resulted in me going out and buying the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder(amazing product) & Morphe Makeup Brushes. He does tutorials, product reviews and is just fabulous. In the beginning of all his YouTube videos he says, “If you guys don’t like this video or if you don’t like me, please don’t f***in watch” which I love.

BRETMANROCK

“EMPOWER YOUR CONFIDENCES AND LOVE” He’s absolutely HILARIOUS and his highlight is always on point. Bretman is 17 and living in Hawaii, originally from the Philippines. He is the epitome of confidence and being unapologetically you. He has 5 million Instagram followers and that is his most active account so if you want to see what he’s all about go there.

PATRICKSTARRR “I FEEL LIKE THE MINORITY OF MINORITIES – I’M GAY, I’M PLUS-SIZED, I’M FILIPINO, I DO MAKEUP.” With over a million Instagram and Youtube followers, a recent collaboration with Sephora and a turban that keeps on growing is there anything Patrick can’t do? As well as YouTube tutorials on himself, he also does tutorials on females which is amazing. As you can see he is awesome at makeup. I love this piece he puts under every YouTube video. “HEY EVERYONE! I love makeup SO much. I wanted to share my personal makeup transformation on half my face! YES- I am a boy. I am no different than the next person. I believe that it is ok for men to wear lashes and lipstick too! Makeup is art and I want share this with all of you. Don’t be afraid to share yourself with the world. Have courage and be kind. You never know where life will take you because “Life Opens Up When You Do”” So that’s it for this week everyone, if you have any questions or want to know more you can email me at bexblahbeauty@gmail.com, follow my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Blog’, Instagram @Bexblah, Snapchat @ Bexblah

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. This week I’m talking about some of my ‘Fitness Essentials’ that I use everyday.

FITBIT CHARGE

It tracks my steps. Calories burned, and my sleep! I wear it everyday and I love it.

SMART SHAKER

PROTEIN POWDER

BOBBLE BOTTLE

I mix this with 200ml of Almond milk after the gym and it honestly tastes like a milkshake. I have the Vanilla flavour and you can get 1kg for less than 20 euro!

ALMOND MILK

Refilling regular plastic bottles isn’t the best so I got myself one of these and I love it. It holds a litre of water so I know exactly how much I’m drinking. I’ve had it over a year and all you have to do is change the filter every few months.

MY FITNESS PAL APP

I use this app to track all my food, even the bad stuff so that I am always accountable.

HEADPHONES

I use this for my protein shakes after the gym, it’s quick and easy and my one is pink so it looks pretty, always a bonus.

NIKE FREE’S

Again any style gym shoe will work for you depending on your training, but I am absolutely OBSESSED with the Nike Free’s. They are SO comfortable.

22

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Recently I’ve made the switch from cow’s milk to almond milk. When I was in California I drank this brand one and I can get it here in Dublin and it tastes fab. I’m not a fan of the Alpro Soya one though.

Friday 15th April 2016

Obviously you can use any headphones you like for the gym but I love these Marley in ear ones. They’re grey and pretty and I love the Marley brand in general.

COMBATING CANDIDA Candida is a yeast, which occurs naturally in everyone from infancy. It lives in balance in the bowel with other bacteria, known as bowel flora. These flora help with digestion and absorption and also play a vital role in a healthy immune system. Candida becomes a problem if this natural balance is upset, leading to a yeast over growth. This condition is known as candidiasis. What are the main triggers of candida over-growth? The root cause is usually a weakened immune system, due to poor diet, stress and anti-biotics. Some of the common symptoms of candida include: Skin and nail fungal infections, Feeling tired, Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation or diarrhea, Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus and brain fog, Skin issues, such as eczema, psoriasis and rashes, Irritability, mood swings and anxiety, Vaginal infections, urinary tract infections and itching, Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings Some of the effective natural remedies you will find in-store, to help to alleviate these symptoms include: DIDA: This all in one herbal product is designed to help maintain a healthy candida balance. PASTA , PASTA!

First off ,thank you to those who sent kind words about the blog . ....it is only started.! for those yet to see it www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com Check out previous recipes and so much more. I have received a few emails about quick dinner ideas so here are two pasta dishes that are quick but tasty

LINGUINE

with Lemon, Garlic and Thyme Mushrooms

SPAGHETTI ALLA FORIANA

INGREDIENTS

FORIANA SAUCE

• • • • • • • • • •

METHOD

4 cups (8 ounces) finely sliced cremini or button mushrooms 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon sea salt or 1 1/2 teaspoons table salt 1 small clove garlic, minced 1 lemon, zested and juiced 4 sprigs fresh thyme stripped to give 1 teaspoon leaves 1 pound linguine or other pasta shape 1 bunch fresh flat-leaf parsley, leaves chopped, to give 1/2 cup 2 to 3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan, to taste Freshly ground black pepper

METHOD 1. 2. 3.

Slice the mushrooms finely, and put them into a large bowl with the oil, salt, garlic, lemon juice and zest, and gorgeously scented thyme leaves. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions and drain loosely retaining some water. Quickly put the pasta into the bowl with the mushroom mixture. Toss everything together well, and then add the parsley, cheese, and pepper before tossing again. Eat with joy in your heart

Serves 4 with sauce to spare

• • • • • • •

1. 2. 3.

1 cup walnuts 1 cup pine nuts 5 tablespoons sliced garlic (about 10 large cloves) 3 teaspoons dried oregano 3 tablespoons olive oil plus more for covering the jars 1/2 cup white or golden raisins Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Place the walnuts, pine nuts, and garlic in a food processor and pulse to a fine chop. Add the oregano and pulse a few more times to combine. Heat the olive oil in a medium sized pan over a medium heat. Add the nut mixture, the raisins, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly to avoid burning or searing. Cook the spaghettini in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and toss with the Foriana Sauce. Garnish with the cheese. Check the seasoning and serve immediately Recipes by

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A MAN TAKE HIS DOG TO THE VET, AND THEN...

NOW SON

A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet and asks, “my dog’s cross-eyed... is there anything you can do for him?” “Well,” says the vet, “let’s have a look at him” So, he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then teeth. Finally, he says “I’m going to have to put him down.” “Why? Because he’s cross-eyed?” “No, because he’s really heavy.”

HORMONAL

I’m certain there are female hormones in beer. When I drink too much, I talk nonsense and I cannot control my car.

HEY BIG SPENDER!

A WHITE MAN SAYS TO A COLORED MAN...

A white man says to a colored man next to him, “Colored people are not allowed here, “ The man next to him with a brown colored skin tone turned around and stood up. He then said: “Now listen here...when I was born I was BROWN, when I grew up I was BROWN, when I’m sick I’m BROWN, when I go in the sun I’m BROWN, when I’m cold I’m BROWN, and when I die I’ll be BROWN.” “But you sir...when you’re born you’re PINK, when you grow up you’re WHITE, when you’re sick you’re GREEN, when you go in the sun you turn RED, when you’re cold you turn BLUE and when you die you turn PURPLE.” “And you have the nerve to call me colored?”

A WOMAN NOTICED HER HUSBAND STANDING ON THE BATHROOM SCALE

An elderly man was on the operating table awaiting surgery to be performed by his son, a renowned surgeon. Just before they would put him under, he asked to speak to his son: “Don’t be nervous, son, do your best and just remember, if it doesn’t go well, if something happens to me… your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife

A man noticed his credit card has been stolen - but he never reported it. The thief was still spending considerably less than his wife.

JESUS AND HIS APOSTLES GO TO A RESTAURANT... “Table for 26, please,” Jesus tells the hostess. “But there are only 13 of you.” “Yeah, but we’re all going to sit on one side of the table.”

FACT: A LOT OF WOMEN TURN INTO GOOD DRIVERS. LESSON:

If you’re a good driver, watch out for women who are turning.

coffee morning AN AUSTRALIAN MAN WAKES UP IN THE HOSPITAL...

A woman noticed her husband standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in his stomach. “Ha! That’s not going to help,” she said. “Sure, it does,” he said. “It’s the only way I can see the numbers.”

he says, “Doctor, was I brought here to die?” The doctor replies, “No, you were brought here yester-die”

TORQUING CARS! FORD TRANSIT CUSTOM ACCELERATES AHEAD !

It’s all change for Ireland and the UK’s best selling van. The Transit is so popular it accounts for almost one in five of all new vans sold and has become the level by which other vans are judged. So getting it right with this new generation Transit is crucial. But what exactly is the Transit Custom you may be asking? Well in order to differentiate the range, Ford is splitting the Transit line-up. So the standard one tonne model is now renamed Transit Custom while the bigger two tonne models will remain Transit. Both share the new Ford ‘kinetic design’ styling though. We’ve seen it on Ford cars like the latest Focus and the adoption onto vans has worked surprisingly well. The Transit Custom certainly has a more upmarket appearance than the previous version, athough it has lost some of its angular and tough charm. Interior quality is a big step up with a similar cabin to the Ford Focus and impressive levels of refinement. It’s comfortable with a forgiving ride while the 2.2 TDCi engine is quiet, even at motorway speeds. This is one van it’s a pleasure to spend time in. Short and long-wheelbase models are available, the former of which has an overall length of 4.97 metres and the latter 5.34 metres. The loadspace is designed to accommodate 6.0-cubic metres with a full bulkhead fitted, meaning it can carry three Euro pallets loaded to 1.0-metre high. The space between the wheel arches is best in class, allowing for 8x4ft board to be loaded flat to the floor. There are double cab versions available and a useful Kombi minibus variant which can carry nine people. It’s a good alternative to the more expensive Ford Tourneo Custom. The Transit Custom has set a new benchmark in the van market. It’s streets ahead of the competition in every aspect and is easily the most car-like of panel vans, both in terms of driving and refinement. Yet it remains as practical and cheap to run as ever making it quite simply the best van you can buy. (Honest John Review )

BRENDAN GETS NEW TOP GEAR TEAM TO KERRY THIS WEEKEND

Kerry Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin is warmly welcoming the announcement by Top Gear presenter, Chris Evans, that the programme is to visit Kerry this week. “Two years ago I contacted the BBC and invited the Top Gear programme to come to Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way, as I believed that the landscape, the roads and the people would be a perfect fit for the programme. I was delighted today to hear Chris Evans confirm that the show will be coming to Dingle on Friday. “Top Gear is a hugely popular programme watched by millions of people across the globe. By coming to Kerry, the programme will expose the area to a whole new audience and will present a massive opportunity for tourism. “Over the past number of years Ireland’s tourism offering has increased hugely and the number of overseas visits to Ireland between December 2015 and February 2016 has increased by 17.1% compared to the same period last year. However there is potential to continue on this road and to see further growth. “A Tourism Action Plan is in place to move us toward our 2025 targets of €5 billion in overseas tourism revenue and 250,000 jobs in the tourism sector. “Major programmes and films such as Star Wars’ visit to the Skelligs, and now Top Gear’s trip to Kerry, draw attention to the area and their importance cannot be underestimated. This is a free showcase for our spectacular county and culture. I look forward to the people of Kerry welcoming the Top Gear team to Kerry. I am confident that they will get some stunning shots of the area, which will attract many new tourists to Kerry.”

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR FIGHTER’S DEATH PUTS COLLAPSE INTO PERSPECTIVE:

Dublin. The death of Joao Carvalho is a tragedy for his family, his team and his sport. If they can learn from it then this athlete (and he was an athlete who was in top shape after training hard to get to the levels he did achieve) will not have died in vein.

The death of MMA fighter Joao Carvalho in Dublin after a fight at the National Stadium puts everything else that happened in sport at the weekend into perspective. Carvalho fought Charlie Ward on Saturday night in a welterweight contest at Total Extreme Fighting 1 and fell ill 20 minutes after the fight. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday night despite the best efforts of the doctors in Beaumont. Carvalho was part of the Nobrega team and had been gaining recognition at both national and international level and his death has shocked the sport. The death of a sports person in action affects everyone with a love of sport. And you don’t have to love the discipline they are involved in to respect them as sportspersons. Thankfully it is rare and this makes it even more shocking. Before Carvalho the most shocking death was Phil Hughes, the Australian cricketer who suffered a fatal head injury in a game after being hit by a ball despite wearing the most up to date equipment. There were deaths in other sports such as boxing, motor sports, skiing and cycling and all are sad. There is no doubt that MMA divides people and I for one have no interest in watching it and have never watched a fight. Indeed I don’t even like the highlights such as the punch that Colin McGregor threw when winning his world title. But I would not be one of those calling for it to be banned. Others take a different view and this death will ignite that debate again. But as I said there have been deaths in other sports so should we call for motor sports, skiing or cycling to be banned. I am a huge fan of cycling and the skills of the cyclists but to see them hurtling down descents like the Healy Pass at 80km per hours is frightening and cycling has led to deaths but we don’t call for a ban on cycling. All we, as sports fans, should call for is that those in charge make their sport as safe as possible. Maybe those in the MMA can look at the gloves or the rules re head shots but as sports fans we should not be calling for it to be banned. And we must also remember that no sports person goes out to fatally hurt an opponent. Yes in sports like the MMA, kick boxing and boxing the idea is to defeat the other person and to do this you have to hit and hurt them. But no one ever wants what happened in

THE COLLAPSE OF JORDAN SPIETH: It shows the ever changing nature of sport that I had planned to do my main comment piece on the collapse of Jordan Spieth at the US Masters until the above death changed the focus. On Sunday night many commentators were treating his collapse from a position of almost having one arm in the Green jacket to having to hand it over to Danny Willett as one of the most tragic things in sport. And I suppose from a sporting point of view it was spectacular. As the famous Golf Digest puts it, “Nothing on the Augusta golf course, or on any golf course, has been harder on the eyes in the history of the sport than Spieth’s quadruple bogey seven at the 12th.” The American was the defending champion and winning two Masters in a row is a rare feat but he looked in full command of the tournament until those three holes. But if he even bogeyed the 12th you would think he would still have enough in hand. But by now we all know he didn’t and in 30 minutes went from being in five in front after 9 holes to dropping six shots and losing the lead. Credit goes to Willett who was on hand and had the belief to take the opportunity when it was presented to him and to Speith who fought back to finish joint second. It was probably scripted in the stars that something like this would happen on the 20th anniversary of the collapse of Greg Norman. He led by six shots but saw that disappear with a charging Nick Faldo taking the jacket on that occasion. From a fans point of view a team losing a 2-0 lead or a cyclist getting a lead of up to 10 minutes and being hauled back makes great viewing and is either thrilling or devastating depending on who you are supporting. And back to Spieth he had to wait around and hand over the Green Jacket to the new champion. I must say that I always appreciate a team or sportsperson that waits around when defeated to congratulate the new winner. I have a serious issue when I see a team not waiting after a final defeat. But as I said at the outset while this was devastating for the Spieth he is well back on the course by now. Not everyone is so lucky to get another opportunity – defeats are hard to take but they are only defeats. What happened in the National Stadium puts all that into perspective. DUBLIN FAVOURITES TO DEFEAT KERRY IN LEAGUE FINAL: From another shaky start Kerry have had a great run in the latter stages of the National League to book their place in the final. This is the first time since 2009 that the Kingdom have reached the final and did so by defeating Roscommon 3-15 to 0-14 in a very impressive display. Yes the second half was not as good as the first but by that stage the game was over. Manager

Friday 15th April 2016

Eamonn Fitzmaurice is in a good position in that he has things to be very happy about and things to work on. And the final against the Dublin on April 24th is the dream one. The Dubs are 22 games unbeaten and brushed Donegal aside 1-20 to 0-13. Betting on the game has Kerry at 5/4 and Dublin 8/13 to win the Allianz Football League and lift the National Insurance Cup. Aoife Heffron, PR Executive for BoyleSports commented “The odds are in favour of current champions Dublin retaining their title for a fourth consecutive year after their strong display against Donegal in the National Football League semi-final.” She added “This is Kerry’s first appearance in a league final since 2009 and they are at a disadvantage at 5/4 to finally end Dublin’s reign within the league.” Now if Kerry needed any extra motivation, and I don’t believe they do, then that’s it!! RIAN CAPS OF A GREAT WEEK FOR KERRY SOCCER: Rian O’Sullivan made his first time as captain of Brighton a winning one. The ex-Dynamos player is now making waves by the seaside at Brighton and had the armband when they beat Derby at the weekend. Shane McLoughlin, ex The Park, now plays with Ipswich and also scored at the weekend getting the only goal in their 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Also formerly of the Park Jesse Stafford Lacey will pulled on the Irish jersey in the u18’s Schools International versus the Scots at Killarney Celtic on Thursday night. Add in Killarney Celtic’s Hannah O’Donoghue who scored for the Irish U16’s girls, Dillon Robinson who was on the mark for the ever improving Kerry u17 League of Ireland side and Savanna McCarthy who underage career ended with three great performances in the u19’s Euro Elite qualifiers where the girls were just pipped for qualification by Gemany and you will see this was a great week for Kerry soccer. CLASSIC WINNERS: One of the most entertaining competitions run by the KDL is the Over 35’s. Classic FC, captained by Denis Guerin won this year’s competition defeating Killarney Athletic 2-1 at Mounthawk Park. KDL Secretary John O’Regan was on hand to present the New Yorker Cup to Guerin, who is a familiar face at Mounthawk Park. WEIGHING IN IN THE HOPE OF BOXING GLORY: After last week’s action in the ring and the crowning of Aaron McElligott as the 63kg All Ireland boxing champion this weekend the action was on the scales.

Ryan Downey, who won the Irish Championships last year, has a unanimous win over Willie Faulkner in the Boy 4 39kg Munster Championships to book his place in Dublin. Downey is an experienced fighter and stuck to his game plan and caught Faulkner with the cleaner shots to claim the win. FINALS THE HIGHLIGHT AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the final of the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling Memorial A1 570 yards plus the final of the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League N1/N2/N2 525 which is the centre piece of their fundraiser. The game was tied 12 points all entering that final frantic period. The Tralee side was ahead by a point at half time 0-06 to 0-05 and it was nip and tuck all the way through the second half. Templenoe then hit two late goals before Greg O’Connell hit the net for Rahillys who just ran out of time as they were looking for the equaliser. The Senior’s play The Legion in the Senior Club Championship this Saturday in Tralee at 6.30pm. Tralee’s Ultan Dillane has won the March Radio Kerry, Randles Brothers Sports Star of the Month for March. Dillane, who plays rugby with Connaught, made a huge impression when called into the Six Nations team. Nearly 1.500 votes were cast over the seven day voting period and Dillane saw off fellow Tralee men Bryan Cooper and Sean Lacey to take the Award. Cooper’s Gold Cup win and Lacey’s topping the Kerry charts again in Ras Mumhan made it an intriguing battle. The Radio Kerry Sports Awards, in association with Randles Brothers, have been running since 2014 and the panel of judges will again nominate 3 sports stars for the April Award on Monday May 2nd. The public vote for the next week will count for 50% of the overall totals and the winner will be announced on May 9th. CORK V KERRY When: Sunday 17th April, 2016 @ 2pm Cork Camogie Grounds, Castle Road, Mahon.
