TOWN CENTRE WORKS TO GO AHEAD DESPITE TRADERS PROTESTS .... Chris Shortt , Editor , comments .....
If ever there was an example that the Public and Private sector operates at different speeds , then surely what has happened recently with regard to the proposed Town centre traffic plan is it! Lets try to give you an “executive summary” of whats happened This plan was initialised as far back as 2009 Consultation process took place 4-5 years ago when submissions were invited from interested parties , incl Businesses , Tralee Chamber , Voluntary groups etc Eventually the funding was .secured (circa 1.38 million which brings the budget to 2.2 million ) But this funding is based on the works done in a particular way and budget used in a particular timeframe . This “particular way “ involves amongst other things 2 way traffic in Denny St , the loss of 66 parking spaces in the heart of Tralee ,the loss of significant disabled parking , and the relocation of the Taxi Rank to Denny St . These are the issues that have caused the; Save Tralee ‘ meetings to be so well attended .And I attended a very proactive meeting on Monday last in the Grand Hotel when over 200 people attended including many public representatives . This was followed by another smaller meeting on Wednesday with Save Tralee representatives and Kerry County Council The outcome of these proactive meetings I will cover below , But first maybe a few observations on my behalf .... - As Fergal Quinn said recently on the Late Late show about our Government and Civil Servants “ I am always concerned about working with people who allocate and spend money without having to worry where its going to come from !” And this guy spent 25 years working as a Public Representative ! as well as Superquinn !! Yes it was a good idea at the time , way back in 2009, 2010 2011 , with our local authorities doing what they do well , securing funding and money for projects . Tralee Inc has always been good at doing that ...Think back to the 1990s .... The Aquadome driven by Denis Reen , The Jeanie Johnson driven by John Griffin , Tralee’s CCTV system , the first in provincial Ireland , driven by Denis O Leary and The Ring Road with Dick Spring BUT the whole country was in the worst recession that we have ever seen around that time and the business community would have been receptive to any project that involved spending money locally and holding onto a few jobs . Anyway , everybody was too concerned about trying to simply keep the doors open and surviving at that time . If Donald Trump had arrived and promised Casinos for all , we would have said yes , !! Any economic activity was better than none ! We are where we are .... But roll on a few more years , and surprise surprise , we are slowly exiting this darn recession , after years of pain , anguish and stress ...Yes thats what the self employed and business community go through when times are hard ...(.I know ...we closed our business after

23 years in 2011.) When times are bad , very bad or even just quiet , very quiet in business terms , we are the last to pay ourselves wages on a Saturday evening , our staff and Suppliers come first as they are what keeps us in business ...and after that , just form an orderly queue...and we’ll see whats left ! We have fought off the downturn, seen our youth emigrate, the Mall, our prime shopping area full of empty units only 4 -5 years ago! There was no Quinlans ,no Costa , no Mods n Minis , No Tagney Lacey opticians , No Benners Hotel , No Roasthouse , No Zipyard, No Regatta, No Official , No Paco and all while trying to embrace the most lop-sided development (Nothing personal , Derek ) in the country, A development that was given the go ahead by our local authority and elected officials back in 1999 ,..... Manor West . A great commercial development , and well run but Manor has FREE PARKING, ...Tralee Town Centre doesnt ! So forgive Heather O Sullivan of John Ross and Dick Boyle of the Grand Hotel , Der Sullivan of Ders and
TESCO HAD PULLED OUT OF THE TOWN CENTRE ! THEN THE SQUARE FOLLOWED . So a downturn in business after a major attraction leaves the town followed by construction work and major disturbances ....And we wondered where our customers went!! DOES THIS ALL SOUND A LITTLE DEJA-VU !! What about this quote from KCC ?........” we could have difficulty in securing future monies if we turn this down “ WHY SO ? iF I as a business secured funding for the development of my business , then decided the timing wasnt right , for whatever reason , then surely I would have a better chance of securing it again in the future ! Why should I spend it just for the sake of spending it !! REMEMBER A GOOD IDEA , BADLY IMPLEMENTED , IS A BAD IDEA !! Anyway , whats the current status? I believe that the development is going ahead following meetings with Council officials and SAVE TRALEE ( business people Hotelier Dick Boyle, Auctioneer Eddie Barrett and Heather O’Sullivan of John Ross Jewellers.were present ) They met CEO of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, Senior Engineer Tom Sheehy and Director of Services Michael Scannell. Middle ground was found on a number of important issues such as Parking Spaces , Disabled zones and The Taxi Rank .And I believe further positive suggestions were discussed . Hats off to SAVE TRALEE ...and to KCC !! In the meantime how about this for a discussion item?
Benners Hotel for being a little protective of the 66 parking spaces under threat , that their precious customers have to pay the privilege for shopping in Tralee . When Manor opened all those years ago , it had 1 coffee shop , 1 supermarket , 1 Department store , no pharmacy , and some other shops ....So you wouldnt exactly say that people were going there for retail choice ....Manor West simply took the first rule of business , “Make it as easy as possible for people to do business with you “ and excelled at it ! and people came (but from where ??).... Welcome to Manor , Park where you like , for as long as you like ..and .Tralee Town Centre .. well ...quite the opposite !!! Is it any wonder Heather says we are still very fragile as we exit this recession ....lets see that its here to stay for a while before we start moving the goalposts again !! You see , business people in this Town know what their customers want ...they have to know ...thats how they stay in business !! So when the KCC Engineers say “it could take 12 months ,rather than 8 “ , and “the timing is not ideal “ and it cant afford to turn down the funding ...then alarm bells start ringing !! I remember when it was decided to Pedestrianise AbbeyCourt in 2002 AFTER
Friday 27th May 2016
.....While we are waiting for the grand Denny site plan to evolve ....why not ..... -Identify a section of this site that we could offer business people and their staff long term parking away from the town centre at say €50 for 6 months....thats lots of parking freed up -Put up signs on the entrances to Tralee saying “Welcome to Tralee .... Free Parking (1st Hour Free)....look at Newcastlewest! -Then jointly market with Manor that Tralee is the first FREE PARKING TOWN IN IRELAND (MUNSTER ) - Then begin cross-marketing both centres by establishing a shuttlebus operation from the Town Centre to Manor West every 15 mins @ €1 -And while we’re on a roll , why not do the same between Tralee and Killarney with our totally underutilised railway line with a 2 carriage train bringing people to both centres every hour ...now thats serious numbers going in both directions ....its what they do in Europe !! Any takers anyone? Chris Shortt Editor The Tralee Advertiser Former Retailer and Former President of Tralee Chamber of Commerce

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Tralee Advertiser – A Grandchild’s story.
Tony and Mary have been looking after his granddaughter Ciara after their mother Angela died for about two years. She is 10 years of age and has lived with them since she was born as her mother was a single mother whom they supported after she had Ciara and it worked well for all of them. They now feel that they need to get some legal status in relation to Ciara for liaising with Ciara’s school, for signing forms for her e.g. passport forms and for medical reasons also. They are wondering what they can do. The new Children and Family Relationships Act 2015 provides that where people have been looking after a child for at least a year and where there is no other guardian that they can make application to the District Court to become legal guardians of Ciara. The application would be on notice to the Child and Family Agency and her father/parent even if he is not a guardian and the court would decide the application based on the best interests of the child. This act sets out criteria the Judge would take into account in deciding what is in the best interests of the child. This long list includes having meaningful relationships with relatives, the views of the child, physical, psychological and emotional needs of the child, the history of the child’s upbringing and care, the child’s religious, spiritual, cultural and linguistic upbringing and needs; the child’s social, intellectual and educational upbringing and needs; the child’s age and any special characteristics and the protection of the child’s safety and psychological well-being; where applicable, proposals made for the child’s custody, care, development and upbringing and to maintain and foster relationships between the child and his or her other relatives; the capacity of each person in respect of whom an application is made under this Act to care for and meet the needs of the child. There are other criteria as well but these would be the relevant elements of the list for this application. Hopefully all going well Tony and Mary would succeed in getting becoming joint Guardians of Ciara. This would give them rights and responsibilities to make the relevant major decisions for Ciara in relation to education, dental and medical care, where and with whom she would live as well as her religious, spiritual, cultural and linguistic upbringing. They would also be responsible to provide for her safety and welfare.

3 TOP PRIZES AT ECO-UNESCO YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALISTS AWARDS STUDENTS: TY SCIENCE GROUPS TEACHERS : Clem O’Keeffe, Rita O’Donoghue
Transition Year Science students at Presentation Secondary School Tralee won 2 categories prizes and the overall award at the Eco-Unesco Young Environmentalist Awards in the Mansion House in Dublin on Wednesday 18 May. “Out with Japanese Knotweed” by Ms. Clem O’Keeffe’s group won the Biodiversity category and “If your Dog poops, you scoop” by Ms. Rita O’Donoghue won the Waste category. “If your dog poops, you scoop” then went on to win the overall senior award for the competition. Both groups have been extremely active in raising awareness of these issues through media articles, online campaigns and talks in Tralee town and surrounding areas in recent months. The overall winning group did a lot of surveying of the key walking areas in town such as along the canal as well as a lot of “Poop-Scooping” and found that levels of “poop” being found decreased during the course of their campaign which was clear proof of how effective their campaigning was. CHEQUE PRESENTATION AS A RESULT OF FUNDRAISING FOR CUAN MHUIRE: STUDENTS: TY HOME ECONOMICS Teacher: Ms. O’Connor Ms. O’Connor’s TY Home economics group hosted a fund-raising lunch staff lunch for Cuan Mhuire on Wednesday 11th of May. Staff were treated to a wonderful selection of quiches, cold meats and salads followed by desserts and tea/coffee – all prepared freshly by the TY students and served up very professionally by them afterwards. Thanks to the sponsors - Dunnes Stores, Maguire’s Butchers, Tesco and Waddings Butchers - a very substantial amount has been raised for Cuan Mhuire. All Students also took part in the annual no-uniform day which also contributed to the funds raised. Presentation Tralee has a very special connection with Cuan Mhuire as our former Principal Sr. Bríd works there as a counsellor and we are very proud of her dedication and time spent helping people experiencing addiction. €1,600 was raised for Cuan Mhuire in the 2 events. 4

GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER... M: 0873931388
The styles for any occasion In this week’s column we are going to discuss the summer season approaching us. Weddings, debs and other occasions are a major part of the season. We are going to discuss haircuts that are easily made dressy looking and can also be worn relaxed.
A backcombed style - This is one style that hasn’t faded the past few years. You can have virtually any length on the back and sides although, the shorter the sides the more distinct it looks. There needs to be length on top. For a big occasion a long top sleeked back or scrunched back with a matte product is ideal. Then for normal wear the top can be down messy or up messy. It really is a style you can wear any way. Puffy undercut - The only thing you need to
pull off a puffy undercut is a lot of volume and texture. This version of the undercut is also dependant on the kind of hair that you naturally possess. Men with curlier or wavier hair types will find this styling easier to recreate.
Disconnected undercut - This cut relies
on a stark contrast between your hair up top alongside the shaven sides of your hair, distinguished with a line. There is a refined way to interpret this version of the undercut and it comes down to styling. Maintain your side part and use products that will make your hair look sleeker.
Layered undercut - For something a bit different, a layered undercut is what you will want. This version of the undercut is also advised for those who want to add fullness and depth to your hair from a visual perspective. By adding layers this will visually amplify your locks, working to make the hair look more voluminous. This again can be made look dressy and casual.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... IT TRALEE LAUNCHES TASTE OF SCIENCE In today’s Europe small and medium-sized food enterprises (SMEs) need to keep reinventing themselves if they want to remain profitable. The free online resource, Taste of Science, can give food producers a competitive edge by keeping them posted on new trends, scientific knowledge and technological developments. This way, entrepreneurs can get new ideas on innovation and growth opportunities. Changes in EU legislation, subsidy and regional protection for food products are topics the magazine addresses. The easy-to-read articles provide insights, inspire and facilitate decision-making and innovation. Whilst the food sector is the largest manufacturing sector and employer in Europe, it is also highly fragmented. More than 70% of the 400.000+ food producing SMEs in the EU have less than ten employees, and yet these SMEs are responsible for 49.6% of the total turnover and for 63.3% of employment in the food and drink industry. “Keeping in mind the time demands of running a business, Taste of Science provides a high return on time invested. It connects, informs, and supports food entrepreneurs with technological and business intelligence that is application ready,” Dr. Helena McMahon, Commissioning Editor, Institute of Technology Tralee highlights. . In addition to the website and newsletters, Taste of Science collaborates in hands-on food production workshops across Europe. These events bring food entrepreneurs, technologists, chefs, farmers and consumers together, to network, collaborate and share best practices. “Food production is challenged with globalisation, resource scarcity and changing demands. On top of tasty and safe foods, consumers want food to tell a story, have natural ingredients and be prepared in a transparent and sustainable way. The free online magazine Taste of Science presents solutions that inspire and enable food producers like bakeries, cheese- and sausage-makers to meet these demands,” explains Editor in Chief, Jeroen Knol.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: RULES ON OPERATING DRONES Question I intend to buy a drone. Are there any rules I should be aware of? Answer Drones and model aircraft are both considered small unmanned aircraft and the same rules apply to their operation. The rules are set out in the Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) and Rockets Order 2015 (SI 563/2015). Under the rules, all drones weighing 1kg or more must be registered with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). This includes the weight of the battery and all attached equipment, including cargo, at the start of its flight. You must be over 16 years of age to register a drone, otherwise it must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. You register your drone online at iaa.ie/drones. You must never operate a drone in a negligent or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of others and you must have permission from the landowner for take-off and landing. You must never operate it: •

If you want to operate your drone outside these limits, you must apply to the IAA for a specific operating permission and complete a drone safety training course. If your drone weighs 4kg or more, you must complete a drone safety training course before operating it. You should be aware that there may be privacy or trespass issues if you operate a drone over private property. While you do not need insurance to operate a drone it is recommended that you are insured and that you complete a drone safety training course.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... OVER 850 STREET FEAST PARTIES REGISTERED TO DATE WITH 14 PARTIES PLANNED FOR KERRY SO FAR! - Street Feast are delighted to confirm that over 850 Street Feast parties around the country have been registered to date, including 14 taking place in Kerry. The 7th Annual Street Feast Day, which is to be held on Sunday, 12th June 2016 is attracting great crowds, and in Kerry this year, Street Feast parties are taking place throughout the county, including in Killarney, Killorglin, Stradbally, Milltown and Tralee. There is still time to book and include your community in the special 2016 celebrations, please log onto www. streetfeast.ie.
Street Feast is an Irish local community initiative and this year is part of the State’s 1916 / 2016 Centenary Celebrations. Street Feast is a not-for-profit, all-for-fun, do-it-yourself celebration. The initiative invites an individual, or a group of neighbours, or a club, to host a lunch on their street, in a local park or in their front gardens – inviting other neighbours to come along and join them. It is hoped that in some small way, a Street Feast, this allinclusive initiative, encouraging active participation, will bring communities together and reduce isolation. Everyone is encouraged to bring something along. In partnership with the Centenary Programme, we are calling on people nationwide to come together at 12.00 noon on Sunday, 12th June to enjoy a bite to eat with their neighbours for a simple and fun way of reconnecting with those that live near them. This year, even more organisations have come on board to promote the community initiative – the local authorities throughout the country, An Post, Dublin City Council, Scouting Ireland, Irish Men’s Sheds Association, Irish Countrywoman’s Association, GIY Ireland, Volunteer Ireland, Foroige, The Tidy Towns and many more. Any group wishing to join the party and support the initiative – please get in touch with Street Feast. Speaking today, Sam Bishop, one of the founders of Street Feast said: “We were delighted that Street Feast is included as part of The State’s Special Centenary Celebrations and we hope that in some small way, a Street Feast will bring communities together and reduce isolation. We want Street Feast to act as a spark to help rejuvenate communities, welcoming old and new faces, bringing generations together, sharing stories and skills, and making our streets safer places to be. “The bookings are coming in fast and the feedback has been tremendous, with some streets even getting dressed up to mark the commemorations. Over 850 Street Feast parties are confirmed to date and 14 confirmed in Kerry so far. We still have three weeks to go and we would encourage as many individuals, friends, neighbours, clubs, community groups, resident associations, etc. to get involved in this special all-inclusive community initiative. We will show you how easy it is to organise”. Street Feast will support these individuals and community groups to host their own celebration, which is repeated on streets and in gardens all across Ireland. Everyone who registers will receive a free Street Feast party pack*. The Street Feast website – www. streetfeast.ie outlines how to go about organising your own Street Feast and provides the templates for posters, flyers to hand out and invites to drop through your neighbour’s door. How to register to receive your Free Party Pack* and what is involved? Hosting a Street feast couldn’t be easier. People can register their Street Feast online at www.streetfeast.ie where you will receive a free Party Pack (while stocks last), which will be posted direct to your home. This pack provides a handy guide to help make your feast a success, as well as posters, invitations, balloons, party hats and bunting to get the party started!
TRALEE ART GROUP
Tralee Art Group was formed in 1979 to encourage interest in the visual arts locally.Today, with 20-3- dynamic members, aged from 19 to 85, Tralee Art Group meets monthly to plan exhibitions, listen to visiting speakers, discuss their work, arrange visits to artists and exhibitions, and engage in practical activities. Working with local artists, members can increase their skills base & continue their learning both formally & informally. T.A.G. is the only group in Kerry drawing its membership from a wide geographical area, working in a comprehensive range of media, solely concerned with the fine arts, opened equally to amateur and professional alike. Having a long history, the group is closely involved in the local community. Community collaborations on an ongoing basis, for example, with KDYS students to create mosaics & murals for Baile Mhuire Day Centre in Tralee, have been hugely successful. Tralee Library& Siamsa Tire have all played an important part in the life of the group, and the annual exhibitions held in both venues have been the principal events of the group’s year. As a result of these exhibitions, local people and visitors to the town purchases numerous paintings, and many works travel from Tralee to America and all over the world. On Tuesday June 7th the annual exhibition will open at 6.30pm, in Kerry County Library, Moyderwell, the theme this year in commemoration of 1916, being “ Remember, Reflect, Reimagine”. A wonderful selection of paintings will be on display with a variety of interesting interpretations related to the theme. A Must See! It will run until June 30th. 18

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... IRELAND BIKE FEST GEARS UP TO CELEBRATE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
It is ten years since Ireland Bike Fest first rumbled into Killarney, in the SouthWest of Ireland, and so this June the picturesque town will gear up to celebrate its biggest and boldest festival yet. Ireland Bike Fest is expected to roll out all the stops for their tenth anniversary, and organisers are hinting that they’ve all sorts of surprises up their sleeves. It takes place across Ireland’s June Bank Holiday weekend (June 3-6, 2016). This is an annual gathering on the shores of Ireland and our advice is if you haven’t already done so, you better add this festival to your Bike It List. Killarney is a stunning area and it is the gateway to the most spectacular section of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, the longest defined coastal route in the world! With ten years experience under their belts, the Ireland Bike Fest guys really know what they’re at. This festival has evolved into a well oiled machine attracting bike enthusiasts in their tens of thousands from all over the world. It is Ireland’s only free open biker festival and the festival headquarters are located at The Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney. Highlights will include daily ride outs around famous touring routes along the Wild Atlantic Way - marshalled by Celtic Thunder Chapter Ireland and Gaelic Chapter Ireland, free Harley-Davidson® demo rides, Waterford and Dublin Harley-Davidson® Dealers, H.O.G.® & Rider Services, Jumpstart, Technical Area, the Custom Bike Show, Parade and lots of free live indoor and outdoor entertainment day and night. The Bike Village is the main hub of activity throughout the weekend, featuring trader stands selling specialised biker wares including clothing, helmets, trinkets, gadgets, and gizmos. The Village offers plenty of places to eat, grab a drink at the popular Harley Bar, or simply sit and listen to the live bands and DJ’s perform over the course of the weekend. Three days, three stages and tons of free live music may leave your wheels feeling a little neglected. Check out www.irelandbikefest. com for more updates on the entertainment line-up. Ireland Bike Fest’s support of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland will continue this year with the “Win a Harley-Davidson®” raffle. Ireland BikeFest Killarney is supported by Harley-Davidson® UK, Authorised Dealers and H.O.G.® Chapters in association with Destination Killarney Ltd and Fáilte Ireland. Ireland Bike Fest Killarney takes place from June 3-6, 2016. SO WHAT’S NEW AT THE SANCTUARY BEAUTY GROUP?
The Sanctuary Clinic launches its very own signature facial – ‘PhotoPeel’. Over the past number of months they have been trialling a new dualtreatment (the brainchild of senior therapist Rachael Prendiville and Louise Mahony, in-house nurse) resulting in the launch of ‘PhotoPeel’.
So what’s a PhotoPeel?
Step 1: Your skin is gently ‘pressure washed’ with water, oxygen and anti-oxidants delivered at supersonic speed resulting in the ultimate deep cleanse in preparation for the skin rejuvenation to follow Step 2: Now that the priming is done, we will follow with a process known as Photorejuvenation. This non- invasive treatment for the reduction in uneven pigmentation, the diffusion of redness and high colouring and a considerable boost in collagen levels due to the heat induced during the treatment results in INSTANT ANTI AGEING EFFECTS!
It’s Exam Season at The Sanctuary Beauty Academy!
With ITEC done and dusted for another year (resulting in distinctions and merits across the board in Nail Technology) we are now fully focused on CIDESCO exams which the students are due to sit June 10th and 11th . Keep up the good work guys – your nearly there

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! THIS WEEK I’M TALKING ABOUT COCONUT OIL & HOW I USE IT. I LOVE COCONUT OIL, IT HAS SO MANY USES AND BENEFITS.
HAIR MASK: Coconut oil will give your hair a silky texture and lots of shine. I use coconut oil as a hair mask
at night after I’ve washed my hair. Simply heat up about 5 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, so that it’s a warm liquid. Then, apply it to your hair like any other hair mask. Put on a plastic shower cap or wrap an old T-shirt around your head, and leave the oil in while you sleep. The next morning, wash it off in the shower and wow, hello perfect hair!
EYE MAKEUP REMOVER: I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup. It takes every little bit of eye makeup off and also promotes eyelash growth. Win win situation!
COOKING: When I cook meat, veg and even sweet potatoes I use coconut oil. It’s one of the healthiest oils to use.
SHAVING: As a substitute to shaving cream, just heat up some coconut oil and smooth it over the desired area before shaving. You get a very close shave and your skin is left moisturised.
FACE/BODY MOISTURISER: If you rub a little bit of coconut oil between your hands, you will immediately
notice how incredibly moisturizing it feels on your skin. As a face and body moisturizer, coconut oil is much more hydrating than average store-bought lotions because the oil penetrates deep layers of the skin and actually helps to strengthen underlying tissues. It will also help remove dead skin cells, removing any rough or flaky texture from your skin’s surface and giving you a full body glow. You can use coconut oil as a moisturizer for your entire face, but I like to put it under my eyes and on my lips before bedtime. The best part about this oil is that it will absorb into your skin without feeling oily or greasy. Stay Gorge,
Bexblah. Attention BexBlah Readers!

Bexblah Fitness! This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens Hello my strong friends! I hope you’re all having a great week. So this week I’ll be talking about common gym mistakes every beginner can make.
Everyone starts as a beginner. As we get comfortable with working out, eventually we learn the basics: how to use the machines, how to observe gym etiquette, and what happens if we don’t wipe the gym equipment. But even after you ditched the training wheels, you could still make grave rookie mistakes that sabotage your progress and leave you frustrated, confused, and exhausted. Even if you worked out for years, it could still happen.
1) SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS:
Tackling an insane goal all at once leads to failure: you’ll exhaust your time, willpower, and energy. You’ll also frustrate yourself because it takes so long to achieve. This can then lead to giving up before you’ve even started.
2) NOT TRACKING YOURSELF:
Record everything in your workout: what exercises you did, what weight you used, how many reps you did, etc. You should also track your body by taking photos and measuring your bodyweight, inches and body fat percentage. This will highlight your successes and failures so you can adjust your exercise program and diet to get the results you want!
3) NOT HAVING A PLAN:
Without a plan, you’ll end up wandering the gym looking for something to do. You’ll never build a great body doing that. There’s no system and you’ll prevent yourself from mastering exercises, waste time, and miss out on great results. With so many great beginner programs available, pick one, get started, and stick to it. Don’t forget to change it up when it’s not challenging you!
4) SKIPPING WORKOUTS:
Some people skip a workout because they’re feeling tired, sore, or lazy. They forget that the secret to building an amazing body is simple, consistency. Honor the commitments you make to yourself. If you decide to workout on Mondays and Thursdays and Saturdays, schedule it in and get it done. If that’s too hard, cut your routine down to suit your body, but never skip it. There’s a difference!
5) OVER DOING IT:
There are beginners who live in the gym, workout six times a week, burn themselves out or get injured and then quit. Unless you’re an elite athlete or a high-level bodybuilder, avoid working out too often at the beginning. Doing too much, too soon will slow your progress because of the constant fatigue and lead to overtraining. For most beginners, 3-5 times a week is perfect depending on your body type and goals etc. You need to give your muscles, ligaments, and tendons time between each workout to recover, grow, and get stronger.

FLIP FLOP SEASON IS HERE! How a MEDIPEDI Treatment is performed DMK's MEDIPEDI procedure is a one hour treatment designed to give you excellent results. First, we assess the feet and establish problem areas by looking for thickened areas on your feet, toes and tops of the feet. We also look for bubbling skin or cracked areas. Some extreme calloused skin conditions may require more than one treatment to remove everything. Special ingredients used in the MEDIPEDI products are designed to sink deeply into dead cell layers of skin where they move away heavy cell build-up. Usually dead thickened skin on the feet has a dull yellow or white appearance. When revised, your skin will be restored to a fresh, pink colour and the skin will feel slippery. MEDIPEDI is a totally non-invasive treatment that does not require the use of acids, harsh chemicals and other solvents nor does it rely upon heavy rasping, cutting or other mechanical methods of removing the build-up of hardened, dead skin.
DMK's MEDIPEDI foot treatment works to: • Rough, dry skin build-up • Remove callouses and hardened, yellow skin • Revise dark, pigmented areas • Remove painful corns • Revise cracked heels leaving your skin soft and smooth
Book your Medi Pedi today and receive “FREE” Nail Shape & Paint ONLY €45 *Offer ends 11 June th

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016 So for those who follow Tralee farmers market on facebook, Adrain will have white asparagus this Saturday Every spring, white asparagus makes a brief appearance in markets. So brief that if you blinked you might miss it. Now, you’re probably asking yourself, why is white asparagus so hard to find, so elusive? It’s because there’s a demand for it, especially from restaurants, which buy up the vegetable as soon as it hits the markets. Chefs consider it a rare spring delicacy. typically simmered and topped with hollandaise or vinaigrette. But what really makes white asparagus unusual, so weird, is the fact that it’s grown in complete sun deprivation, making it the vampire of the vegetable world

16 thick white asparagus 1 large egg 2 teaspoons dijon mustard 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 small shallot, finely chopped 3 or 4 cornichons, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon capers, drained and coarsely chopped 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup mixed fresh herbs (parsley, chervil, chives, tarragon), chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper Place the egg in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 10 minutes. Cool in cold running water. Remove the shell. Separate the white from the yolk and chop both finely. Meanwhile, place a large pot of water (or an asparagus steamer) over high heat and bring to a boil. Salt the water. Peel the asparagus and attach them in the bundle with kitchen string (optional) and blanch them in boiling water until tender. (If using an asparagus steamer, fill only half with water, place the asparagus in the basket and place the lid on. The asparagus tips will steam while the stems get blanched.) The cooking time varies depending on thickness but they take longer to cook than regular asparagus. Use the tip of a small knife to test doneness. Place the mustard, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, shallot, cornichons, capers, chopped egg in a bowl and whisk in the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste and add the chopped herbs at the last moment. Serve the warm asparagus with the sauce gribiche on the side White Asparagus with Lemon Pan Sauce 1 bundle white asparagus, cleaned & trimmed 1/2 T. extra virgin olive oil 1 1/2 tsp. shallot, minced 1/3 cup white wine 2 tsp. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. lemon zest salt & pepper 1/2 T. butter 4 sprigs lemon thyme, picked
METHOD 1.
Using a wide, deep pan bring enough salted water to cover asparagus to boil. 2. Add asparagus and boil for 5 minutes. 3. Dunk asparagus in an ice bath, dump out boiling water and place asparagus back in the same pan. 4. Using a small saute pan, heat olive oil at medium-high temp. 5. Add minced shallot. 6. Saute for 1 minute, shaking pan. Be careful not to burn the minced shallot. 7. Remove pan from flame and turn away from stove, add wine. 8. Place pan back on burner and add lemon juice and lemon zest. 9. Shake saute pan violently and continue to cook until reduced by half. 10. Add a pinch of sea salt and a couple twists from a pepper grinder. 11. Add butter and continue to shake saute pan until butter is melted and sauce is shiny. 12. Drizzle sauce over asparagus and garnish with lemon thyme

GRAVEYARD SHORTCUT
A man’s car breaks down in the middle of the night. He knows the area well and realizes that the quickest way to the nearest service station is through an old graveyard. He’s walking along the headstones when in the distance he hears a faint tapping noise. As he gets deeper into the graveyard, the eerie tapping gets louder and louder. He very anxiously turns a corner and sees the source of the tapping is an old man with a hammer and chisel, hunched over a headstone. Relief washes over him and he says, “I was beginning to freak out because of that noise. I thought this place might have been haunted. What on earth are you doing here so late at night anyway?” The old man merely continues chiseling and says “They spelled my name wrong.”
She wanted to see who respects/cares for her the most. She goes to the lake near the eldest son-in-laws place and jumps. The son-in-law dives in and rescues her. TORQUING CARS! ECONOMIC WOES IN FAR EAST HITS ROLLS ROYCE
Economic woes in the Far East saw sales and profits slip at car maker Rolls-Royce last year as wealthy buyers held back from splashing out on luxury British motors. Figures just filed for the company, based in Goodwood, West Sussex, show that sales fell 21 per cent from £446million to £353million, while profits dipped from £18.2million to £16.6million. The company revealed that worldwide sales of the prestigious British limousines in 2015 were down nearly 7 per cent to 3,785 compared with the record 4,062 the previous year – the first fall in annual sales since 2009.Rolls-Royce has been owned by the German carmaker BMW since 1998 and paid an £8 million dividend in 2015, down from £53.8 million the previous year. The company said that ‘significant headwinds impacted negatively on the entire luxury sector and Rolls-Royce was not immune’. However, production was still the second highest in the marque’s 112-year history. Rolls-Royce makes the iconic Phantom, Ghost and Wraith models and launched the Dawn soft-top this year.
DRIVERLESS CARS ‘IN FOUR YEARS’
Driverless cars could be on the road in the UK within four years thanks to a bill to be published on Wednesday. Legislation will be introduced to enable driverless cars, which have already been trialled in the UK, to be insured under ordinary policies. Ministers hope it means they could become a common sight by 2020. Drones and a proposed first commercial spaceport for the UK will also feature on the Queen’s Speech. The Department for Transport has said such cutting-edge technologies are crucial to the country’s economy and that its proposals will help deliver jobs. The self-driving car market is currently growing at 16 per cent a year and could be worth up to £900billion worldwide by 2025. The port is part of the government’s plan to raise revenues in the space sector from £12billion to £40billion by 2030, which would mean capturing about 10 per cent of the sector worldwide.Eight sites – six in Scotland and one each in England and Wales – are currently under consideration for the spaceport, which could launch commercial satellites and tourists into space. It should be finished by the end of the decade.

It is part of a planned ‘hydrogen superhighway’ network of refuelling stations for pollution-free fuel-cell cars. Four more are planned to encircle London, and one already exists in Rotherham close to where Sheffield-based ITM Power is based. Transport Minister Andrew Jones officially opened the Teddington hydrogen fuel station on Tuesday, which uses excess or ‘spare’ electricity on the grid to generate industrial-scale electrolysis of water on-site. This breaks down the water – or H2O – into its building block parts of hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then stored under pressure. It means customers will be able to fill up their cars and pay at the pump, eliminating the need for fuel deliveries in London or anywhere else that has a filling station. The fuel cell cars work by a process of ‘reverse electrolysis’ in that the hydrogen has a chemical reaction at a catalyst membrane in the car. This produces energy in the form of electricity which powers the electric motors. The other residue is pure water – created by the hydrogen and oxygen atoms re-uniting to form H2O. Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, BMW, and Daimler are among those who have developed fuel cell cars for general use by motorists.
TIME-WARP’ BEETLE (42) WITH JUST 90KM TO FETCH €40,000
It is 42 years old but has only 90km on the clock. No wonder it is being called the ‘time warp’ Volkswagen Beetle. And it is going to be sold at Silverstone Auctions’ Classic Race Aarhus auction, Denmark on May 28 and 29. Experts reckon it is, with just one owner and only 90km up, one of the lowest-mileage examples in existence still in its original condition. It was supplied by G. Terragni Volkswagen, Genoa, Italy, on January 23, 1974 to an ‘elderly’ Armando Sgroi. He never owned a car previously and did not want this one. He walked every Sunday from his house in the hills to his local church but despite the short distance it became a struggle and the Beetle was seen as a solution. He didn’t drive much did he? Its last outing was in 1978. Now it is expected to fetch €35,000 to €40,000. (Indo Motoring)

TORQUING CARS! JAGUAR LAND ROVER PLANS TO HIRE UP TO 1,000 EX-MILITARY PERSONNEL
Jaguar Land Rover is celebrating its best ever April with plans for up to 1,000 new jobs for exmilitary personnel. The company sold 41,341 vehicles last month – up 11 per cent on April 2015 – marking its fourth consecutive record-breaking month. It takes sales by Britain’s biggest car-maker for the first four months of the year up to 200,154 – a 24 per cent increase on the same period last year. Sales have been boosted by the success of new models such as the F-Pace sports utility vehicle – dubbed the ‘She-Type Jag’ because of its appeal to women – and the new soft-top Land Rover Evoque. The news came as Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to increase the number of ex-service men and women employed across its global operations to 1,000 by 2020 – a fivefold increase on recruitment since 2013. Jaguar Land Rover has recruited more than 200 ex-service men and women since it pledged its support to the Invictus Games. Some of these joined the business following training delivered through the Jaguar Land Rover Learning Academy . Since 2015 more than 30 service personnel have participated in the ‘Inspiring Tomorrow’s Workforce’ and ‘Wounded, Injured and Sick’(WIS) programmes with 75 per cent of these finding roles at Jaguar Land Rover. Many others have gone on to find jobs with suppliers and in wider industry.
THE NCT HAS BEEN GETTING A BIT OF STICK . One of its testers refused to test a woman’s car because it stank of her three dogs, so she rang Liveline and gave voice to her fury.
That led to a plethora of complaints from Joe’s listeners about the test, including one who failed the test because his bulbs weren’t yellow enough, which led to a fascinating philosophical discussion about how one measures yellowness. From the NCT’s perspective, these complaints are small beans, because the real searing criticism of them this week came from the Road Safety Authority. The RSA did nothing overt or direct. They merely released statistics. Horrifying statistics. About 10 years ago, when the NCT was in its infancy just finding its little feet, the RSA released their analysis of the contributory factors in fatal crashes. Unsurprisingly, drivers were the biggest contributors. Somewhat more unexpected was the vehicles themselves played only a tiny, tiny role. The smallest contributors of all. Only 0.7pc of all road deaths in the five years they studied had the vehicle (tyres, brakes and so forth) as a contributor.there was little need for them to target vehicles as the NCT had been introduced - so logic suggested we’d see that 0.7pc reduce to nothing over the coming years. That did not happen. Vehicle factors as a contributor to road deaths did not decrease. They increased. Massively. The Road Safety Authority told us this week that 12pc of all fatal crashes are contributed to by the state of the vehicles. That’s nearly twenty times as many. A 2000% increase. What the hell? We introduced a car test to address a problem which barely existed, and since that test was introduced, the problem has become epidemic. How is this possible? We spend a fortune on the NCT - hundreds of millions in direct costs to the motorists and billions in the indirect cost of missed work days. (Anton Savage )

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TRALEE MANOR WEST IBIKE’S SEAN STARS IN FRANCE: Sean Barrett member of Tralee Manor West i Bike BC from Scartaglen and first year student in Castleisland community college represented Ireland with huge success in France last week. Sean was picked along with four more boys from different counties to represent Ireland in the under 14 section. The boys gelled well together over the course of the training camp and put in a great team effort claiming the team prize in the two major races. The race on Sunday was in Dampirre Sur Avre and the racing was fast and furious with Sean finishing in eight place. Their team leader Tom Moriarty came first with the other members of the team finishing in the top ten positions. The race on Monday was in Landelles et Coupigny, where the mighty Irish took on the Normandy Champions with Tom Moriarty coming in first. Sean was the third Irish man home finishing in the overall Sixth position. Indeed he showed great heart after being involved in a crash to get back up and have a very good finish. It was great result for Irish cycling and the future looks very bright. Sean deserves huge credit for the time and dedication he has given to the sport. The next big event is the Errigal International Youth race which takes place over the August bank holiday weekend with competitors coming from as far afield as Malta, Uk, Isle of Man France and other countries. Well done to all the boys who took part in all the races to Kieran Coggins from Ballymac and David Fitzgerald from Ardfert who were cycling for the Munster team. Julianne Browne from the host club took the Ladies grade. On a perfect day for pitch & putt the scoring across the grades was high and many brilliant performances were carded most notably Jason Cregan. In the Ladies grade with only a couple of shots separating the top three Lisa O’Connor (Tralee) came third with Eileen Switzer (Deerpark) claiming the runner up spot one shot behind Julianne Broderick (Castleisland) who won the Ladies title. Rory Kelliher won the u10 Player of the Week with Orlaith Murphy, Mark O’Brien, Grainne Breen and Daniel Sheehy also impressing. The u10’s are involved in the Go Games which they are enjoying. The u12’s put in a great performance away to Castleisland Desmonds in Phase 2 of the County League and were unlucky to go down in the end. They play Spa on Sunday in the County League at 6pm. Cul Camps: Bookings are open for the St Pat’s Cul Camps which will take place between August 8th and 12th from 10am to 2.30pm. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NOTES: The Seniors advanced to the next round of the Garvey’s Supervalu Co Championship with a well- deserved 3-11 to 1-11 win over Feale Rangers. Goals win games was certainly true here with Tommy Walsh setting up Kevin Walsh for a vital score before half time leaving the Tralee side ahead 2-07 to 0-05 at the break. Tommy Walsh had earlier hit the first goal of the game. David Moran got the third goal from close range to seal the win. The team is now eagerly awaiting the draw for the next round which could be a bit away depending on the success of the Kerry team. Junior League: Strand Road were beaten by a much stronger Gneeveguilla. They are away to Killarney Legion this Friday while Charlie Kerins are away to Tarbert. Keep an eye on Facebook for any fixture changes. Minor: The Kerins O’Rahillys versus Austin Stacks in the Gealtee Fuels Division 1 Coiste Tra Li final has been postponed until June with the date to be confirmed. Juvenile Training: Juvenile training for boys and girls continues at the usual times this weekend. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto jackpot

from the numbers drawn 9,10,19 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e2,400. All the usual off field activity continues in the club this week. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The underage teams train as usual this weekend. Last week the u8’s and u10’s hosted very enjoyable blitz’s while there are more games in the Fernane and Galvin Cups this week. The u12’s had two very good victories against Listowel Emmets and are due to play An Ghaeltacht next. The u13’s have been invited to Dublin by the Naomh Mearnog in Portmarnock as part of their inaugural tournament. The Portmarnock club has taken the novel approach of opening a camp site for all their visiting teams which should add to the enjoyment of the travelling team. Well done to Gaelscoil Mich Easmainn from Tralee that won the Feile Peile Gael Linn for the third year in a row. Gaelscoils from all over Munster took part and this was a great win for the Tralee school. Well done as well to The Rock players who won the Division 1 County League final defeating Killarney’s Black and Ambers. Feile Peile: This is getting close with the competition from June 24th to the 26th with the Cup and Shield semi-finals and finals taking place on the final day. The u15’s Super 10’s Competition group stage will take place in Connolly Park this Saturday at 1pm. Stacks are in the group with Glenflesk, Ballydonoghue and Annascaul / Lispole. The club still has some tickets available for the Race of Champions at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium if anyone wants them. Stacks Dog does well: Austin Stacks members were out in force to cheer on their greyhound Kerry Legend to victory in the semi-finals of the Brehon Hotel GAA Club Championships. He will now run in the final on the big GAA night with the club hoping for the e1000 first prize.
LACEY THE MAN INTO DINGLE – MOYNIHAN THE MAN INTO SNEEM: There is no doubt that Kerry was the winner as the An Post Ras saw the county at is most beautiful best. And with teams and supporters from countries as far away as Australia and television coverage going to many countries this will be another huge advertisement for Kerry. On the bikes the 9 Kerry riders have certainly proved they deserve their place at the highest level of the sport in the country. Michael O’Shea and Shane O’Neill are doing well with the Tipperary team while Eugene Moriarty is taking part in 19th Ras and can still mix it with the best. Tralee’s Sean Lacey is taking part in his 14th Ras and is enjoying another great Ras. His Aqua Blue Cork team look to be favourites to lift the County Team prize which will be the 3rd time Sean has won this accolade. He already has a trophy from the race as he was the first Kerry rider into Dingle and was presented with the Jackie O’Connor Memorial Trophy by Ann, Jackie’s daughter. It was nice to see one of Kerry’s great cyclists from the past remembered and it was apt that this was presented to Sean Lacey on the 14th anniversary of Jackie’s death. There Is a further connection as Jackie is also remembered on the annual Lacey Cup. The Kerry team are having a great race and after the 4 stages that have taken place at the time I write this they are in second place in the County Team category. The team is managed by Pat Dunworth of Moda Kingdom Endurance have been involved in the van guard of the county riders on all stages. But probably their best of the first 4 was the toughest of the Ras – the 166km from Dingle to Sneem. It took the riders over Ballachaseen and Coomakista climbs, both Category 1 climbs. The Kerry riders missed a break before the first climb and rode hard to get back on and finished in the second bunch on the road with Cathal Moynihan being the first Kerry rider home. Richard Maes was the best on general classification being 5th in the County Riders category with Moynihan 9th. Thursday’s stage from Sneem to Clonakilty is probably the last tough one so hopefully in next weeks report I will be bringing you news of more Kerry success on the Ras.
ON THE GREEN: At the Tralee Golf Club the Ballybunion Exchange was won by Gerard Hussey on 41 points followed by Gerard McNamara and Mike
