Medical Matters DR. KEVIN RYLE TALKS ABOUT GOUT Those that have experienced an attack of gout are well aware of the severe, sudden (over a few hours) onset pain that it can cause in a joint, most commonly in the big toe. However gout can affect any joint including the fingers, wrists, elbows, ankles and knees. It can occur when levels of a chemical called uric acid are high in your blood. This can lead to tiny crystals forming in and around a joint. The presence of these crystals may ultimately trigger a painful attack of gout. Men are more likely than women to suffer from gout but a woman's risk does increase after the menopause. Several lifestyle factors, medications and medical conditions can cause increased levels of uric acid and subsequently an increased risk of an attack of gout: • Drinking excessive alcohol (especially beer and spirits) • Drinking sugar-sweetened soft drinks • Eating certain foods such as beef, pork, liver, kidneys, sardines or mussles • Taking certain medications such as some types of diuretics (water tablets), aspirin and chemotherapy drugs

• Obesity • High Blood Pressure • Suffering from kidney problems • Diabetes Gout is generally not dangerous and does not cause permanent joint damage once treated early in the course of an acute attack. Treatment is usually with a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication. However other treatments can be used, especially in those who are unable to take anti-inflammatories (e.g. history of stomach ulcers, some people with asthma, kidney problems etc.). During an attack you should also elevate the affected joint and apply ice packs for short intervals to reduce swelling. For those that get recurrent attacks of gout long-term treatment with a medication to reduce their uric acid level may be necessary. If you are concerned that you may have gout please talk to your G.P. for advice and further investigations.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... If you can do the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, please do it for Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre Tralee MICHAEL McCarthy from Ardfert has said he would love to take part in this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, but he can’t because he has Multiple Sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair.Full of life and positivity, he is client of Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre for Older Persons in Tralee which has been fortunately chosen as one of the main beneficiary charities for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2018 (ROKCC).Registration opens on Saturday 10th March and Michael has invited ablebodied cyclists to participate in this year’s showpiece with a view to raising much needed funds to develop a new multipurpose unit at the centre in Caherslee, Tralee. The Development Officer at Baile Mhuire, Aidan Kelly, said: “We can all relate to needing help and support at one point or another in our life. The only difference is the kind of help. For the people who have survived a Stroke, and who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis and Early Dementia, their help currently lies within an empty building. We plan on making use of it and developing it into

a Multipurpose Unit. This unit along with our committed staff and volunteers will provide the care and support genuinely needed for Stroke Survivors, Multiple Sclerosis and Early Dementia sufferers to continue safely living in their home, staying connected to their family, their neighbours and their community. For some this is the only independence they have left. Please help us to help them and choose Baile Mhuire as your Ring of Kerry Cycle Charity for 2018.” Taking place on Saturday 7th July 2018, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is celebrating 35 years as Ireland’s largest oneday charity fundraising event. Up to 10,000 recreational cyclists from around the country are set to take part, with a small number of locals readying their High Nelly vintage bikes for the cycle again this year. The registration fee, for 2018 is €100.00 plus a 3.5% service fee and Michael is asking cyclists to fundraise for Baile Mhuire through an online fundraising page with Everyday Hero or sponsorship cards. Cyclists can pre-order their official

Dan’s the enterprising man to lead 2018 Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade along new route DAN Horan has been unveiled as the Grand Marshal for the 2018 St Patrick’s Day Parade which will take a new route this year starting at The Rose Hotel and finishing on the stunning, new-look Mall on Saturday 17th March. He joined the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley to announce details of this year’s celebration of our national holiday which will bring much entertainment onto the streets of Tralee. The St Patrick’s Day Parade, which will start at the earlier time of 11.45am, will have as its theme – Tralee: Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town. The route will bring the participants from Dan Spring Round (roundabout at the entrance to The Rose Hotel) to Cloonbeg Terrace, Dean’s Lane, Boherbee to Castle 8

Street, along The Mall and finishing at the entrance to The Square next to Carraig Donn. The Chairman of the St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Johnnie Wall, said: “Our annual parade will embrace the magnificently refurbished town centre with all participants parading along The Mall and finishing in The Square. It’s fitting that an enterprising individual such as Dan Horan should lead the parade. He opened his first store in Abbey Court in 1988 and now has 21 stores employing 81 people across Munster in Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. We are expecting over 40 groups to take part in this year’s parade and they will all be encouraged to stay in town to enjoy some music, family Friday 9th March 2018

fun and games until around 2.45pm. We look forward to another great gathering of Tralee communities.”Friday 9th March is the extended deadline date for receipt of entry forms whish are available from Kerry County Council Offices in Rathass and Prince’s Quay; Tralee Chamber Alliance, 18 Denny Street; Garvey’s Supervalu, Rock Street; and Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade Facebook Page. Once all the applications have been received, each participant will be given a slot number and the numbers will be displayed along the assembly area at the starting line. Kerry County Council, through the Community Support Fund, is the main sponsor of the Tralee St Patrick’s Day

Parade, while Tralee Chamber Alliance is supporting the provision of family fun on the Mall after the parade. For more information, contact Johnnie Wall on 087 2335846.

Upcoming Dance and Health event at Siamsa Tíre in April

Kerry is at the core of some ground-breaking research on the relevance and benefit of Dance to healthcare and well-being. To highlight the issue a two-day seminar titled ‘Dance and Health Event’ will take place at Siamsa Tíre on the 26th & 27th April next. The event will bring together dance artists, healthcare professionals and service users to explore the possibilities for dance in healthcare. “We need to hear from dance artists, healthcare professionals, and community based organisations who are working in healthcare in Kerry to come along to this event, as the evidence that dance is beneficial to healthcare and general well-being is substantial”, Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer at Kerry County Council stated. A researcher has been appointed to produce a training framework for dance artists working in

healthcare contexts. The Dance and Health event at Siamsa Tire will bring together best practice & national expertise around dance and healthcare. Findings and insights at the event will feed into the research for the training framework. ‘Kerry will be at the core of this ground-breaking research and we are delighted to host the event with Siamsa Tíre. It will also benefit the professional dance sector in Kerry and is an opportunity for dance artists to consider the realm of healthcare as a broad canvas where their dance skills are required’. Kate Kennelly went on to say. . The programme features Fergus Early from Green Candle Dance in the UK, as well as Dr. Jenny Elliott from Arts Care Northern Ireland. It is programmed as part of the TOCHT Festival of Dance at Siamsa Tíre. The project is funded under the

Arts Council’s Invitation to Collaboration Scheme. The event costs €25 per day or €40 for the two days and tickets can be booked through the Box Office at Siamsa Tíre. Tel: 066 7123055 or through http:// www.siamsatire.com/visit/ book Interested individuals can also contact Dance Ireland’s

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...

Hilarious comedy musical for Siamsa Tire Universally recognised as one of the all-time great comedy musicals, Little Shop of Horrors is coming to Siamsa Tire Theatre from Wednesday to Saturday, March 21st to 24th. Presented by the multiaward-winning Light Opera Society of Tralee (LOST), the show is again directed by up-and-coming young director Grainne O’ Carroll, choreographed by Katrina Galvin and musically directed by Aidan O’ Carroll and Anna Connolly. As with our previous LOST shows – Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera, EVITA and West Side Story - this is a fully-staged production with live orchestra and a cast of twenty multi-talented performers.

The show which premiered off Broadway in 1982 tells the story of a mysterious, talking carnivorous plant (named Audrey II) with an insatiable appetite which devours everything in sight including, eventually, the entire cast – a sort of Horrible Histories meets Roald Dahl. The infectious music, composed by Alan Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Suddenly, Seymour”. Menken later became known to generations of children as the composer of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty

and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and Pocahontas.

Leading the cast is well-known Killarney-based entertainer and music-theatre artist Jack Patrick Healy who plays the bumbling but sincere Seymour, shop assistant in Mushnik’s Florist Shop on New York’s Skid Row. Mushnik is played by respected poet, broadcaster and former primary school teacher Sean Lyons. Mounthawk students Sarah Cleary and former Mounthawk student Clodagh Harrington play Audrey, the object of Seymour’s affections, and Sean McElligott is the voice of Audrey II while Marcus Nolan who attends the Green C.B.S. plays the mad Dentist Orin.

Booking is now open at Siamsa Tire box office on 066-7123055. Tickets can also be booked at www.siamsatire.com.

“Hello Anna, My wife and I appreciate the valuable cardiovascular screening profile service you’re providing. After receiving your consultative results of our aortic health status, we immediately sought out a nutritional health specialist. We’ve started a vigorous exercise program. And we’ll set a follow appointment with you to monitor our progress. Your testing service is a lifesaver (especially for me), a man of 66 years and counting on many more. Your testing imprinted on me to act swiftly. 20 years with Pfizer representing cardiovascular medicines and military medical service gives me perspective of the importance of your testing. I like an edge! And I want more years with my lovely wife, children, grandchildren and friends. Again, thanks for being a vital part of the health care team and making a difference in our lives. Kind regards, Daryl & Linda Boothe “ 20

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! This week we celebrated International Women’s Day, woooooooo! This week we celebrated International Women’s Day. A day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. On the note of being a woman, there is something VERY important happening in Ireland with regards to women this year The Referendum On The 8th Amendment. *All of these facts are researched fully through various websites* I know a lot of people who are well informed and have opinions on this subject, but a lot do not. This week I’m going to break it down for anyone who is confused. WHAT IS THE 8TH AMENDMENT? The Eighth Amendment equates the right to life of a pregnant woman with that of an embryo or foetus. In doing so it criminalises abortion in all cases except where to continue a pregnancy would result in death. This archaic and dangerous law: • infringes on the human rights of women in Ireland and goes against international human rights norms • denies access to basic health care, forcing over 154,000 to travel overseas to obtain an abortion since 1980 • criminalises those who self-administer abortion pills in Ireland • maintains a false and medically dangerous distinction between risk to health and risk to life • discriminates against those who cannot travel to obtain abortions • does not reflect present public opinion in Ireland

28

TRALEE ADVERTISER

FACTS Here are simple facts about abortion access in Ireland: 1. Ireland has the one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the European Union. Malta, where abortion is banned in all circumstances, is the only member state where abortion laws are more restrictive. 2. A woman may not procure an abortion in Ireland if she is pregnant due to rape. The latest national statistics from Rape Crisis Centres show that approx 197 women and girls who attended their centres in 2013 were pregnant as a result of rape. 25% of these survivors went on to terminate the pregnancy, meaning they either had to travel for an abortion or illegally take abortion pills in Ireland. 3. A woman may not procure an abortion if she is carrying a foetus that will not survive outside of the womb. Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has admitted that Ireland’s abortion law forces women to carry to term pregnancies that have “no chance of survival for long outside the womb, if at all.” In 2014, 140 Irish women traveled to the UK to have abortions due to congenital conditions, many of which would have been fatal. 4. In 2014, on average, 10 women traveled from Ireland to Britain every day for an abortion. Due to the secrecy and stigma around abortion in Ireland, there are no numbers available to account for the women who travel to other European countries or who procure abortions within Ireland using pills. We do know that in 2014, 1017 abortion pills were seized by Irish Customs (more than double the amount seized in 2013). Any woman or girl who procures an abortion, or anyone who assists a women to procure an abortion in Ireland, outside the confines of the current legislation, can be criminalised and imprisoned for up to 14 years.

Friday 9th March 2018

Here is a simple break down of why we need to repeal the 8th amendment of the constitution. It is by no means all of the reasons. 1. The 8th Amendment equates the life of a woman to that of an embryo. 2. The vast majority of women who want and need abortions are unable to access them in Ireland under interpretations of this law. 3. Women have already died in Ireland having been denied life-saving abortion procedures. At least 150,000 women have travelled to other countries to procure abortions since 1980. People who procure abortion within the country risk a 14 year jail term. Doctors can be jailed too. 4. The life and health of a pregnant woman has a much greater value than our constitution places on it. I strongly believe that EVERY woman should have complete control over her own body. It’s 2018, we need to trust women to make the right decision for them. I believe in the right to safe medical care. I believe in women having the right to choose what they do with their own bodies. Repealing the 8th does not mean that YOU have to get an abortion, it means every woman has the right to choose what she does with her own body. That she can have access to the right help, information and medical attention without being criminalised or having to travel. TRUST WOMEN. ALLOW THEM TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICE. I hope you all have an amazing week!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING THE MOST AMAZING WEEK!

This week I have a bit of news… this fitness column is about to get very very exciting!! If you were here last week, I hope you enjoyed my announcement about heading to Thailand to train in Titan Fitness Phuket. I’m going on the 9th of April for 2 weeks and I cannot wait! This week I’m going to be talking about one of my favourite things - LEG DAY. Why I love training legs, the benefits, my typical leg day workout and more. So if you wanna know more… Keep reading. I think my love of training legs stems from a lot of things, the main one being that I always saw my legs as my ‘problem area’, so when I started training them and saw changes and progress, I got addicted to training legs.

Leg workouts when done correctly, are hard. You will be out of breath, sweating and feeling the burn. I’ve recently started encorparating GVT(German Volume Training) into one of my leg days. So on one of my leg days, I will do every movement aka squat, lunge, deadlift - for 10 reps and 10 sets at a weight that isn’t too heavy but is still a struggle for the last two sets.

CABLE PULL THROUGH: 5 sets of 10 reps with 12-17kg weight

TODAY’S LEG DAY

WEIGHTED GLUTE BRIDGE: 5 sets of 10 reps with weight Also, all women have cellulite. It’s inevitable and isn’t something to be ashamed of, but having more muscle mass in your legs can significantly reduce the appearance of it. Just saying.

The legs are one of the largest parts of the whole body, and I love how toned strong legs look, so I train with that goal in mind. Also, when you train legs you’re also training your bum - and who doesn’t love a good bum! Luckily for us women, we are stronger in the legs than in any other part. We’re actually stronger in the legs than men are in relation to the rest of our bodies. So we’ve no excuse not to have strong toned legs! A lot of leg exercises such as squats, leg press and lunges, are compound movements - which means they involve more than one muscle group so you’ll be working all three of the leg groups, Quads, Hamstrings & Glutes. These movements also target your core strength, winning!

Tralee International Marathon St Patricks Weekend...

Additional Information... 10 reasons why to run a 5Km / 10Km

Our 5k and 10k routes

1. It’s only an eighth of the 40+km of the marathon 2. Costs a lot less and you still get the bottle of water and banana as you cross the line 3. Great way to keep your fitness up without being gone all day training and running 4. Don’t have to travel too far to get a race in unlike the longer routes 5. Less likely of getting injured on the shorter training runs 6. A 5/10Km is a great way to mix up your training for the long run a few months out 7. The wall you hit is smaller and doesn’t last long; you know that the finish line is close. 8. Don’t have to buy Vaseline for those nipple chafing longer runs 9. Great atmosphere running in a group especially as a social outing 10. The glory of the T-shirt and Medal and getting that time and improving on your last run.

What else is happening on the day! Ballyseedy Cafe at the Wetlands will be doing the following healthy options for the runners on the day which will be a... A WOMAN GOES TO A DOCTOR

A woman goes to a doctor, worried about her husband’s temper. The Doctor asks: “Whats the problem?” The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.” The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: “Doctor, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished and he calmed right down. How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It keeps your mouth shut and that does the trick”.

FOUR MEN ARE IN THE HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM!

Four men are in the hospital waiting room because their wives are having babies. A nurse goes up to the first guy and says, “Congratulations! You’re the father of twins.” “That’s odd,” answers the man. “I work for the Minnesota Twins!” A nurse says to the second guy, “Congratulations! You’re the father of triplets!” “That’s weird,” answers the second man. “I work for the 3M company!” A nurse tells the third man, “Congratulations! You’re the father of quadruplets!” “That’s strange,” he answers. “I work for the Four Seasons hotel!” The last man is groaning and banging his head against the wall. “What’s wrong?” the others ask. “I work for 7 Up!”

WE’RE GOING TO THE ZOO ! A gorilla dies of old age at a zoo right before the zoo opens. It is the only gorilla at the zoo since they are not very profitable.

However, the gorilla is their most popular attraction by far, and they cannot afford to go a day without it. So the zoo owner asks one of his workers to wear a gorilla suit they have in storage for an extra $100 a day if he will go in the gorilla cage and pretend to be the gorilla until the zoo can afford a new one. Quickly, the new “gorilla” becomes the most popular craze at the zoo. People from all over are coming to see the “Human-like” gorilla. About a month in, the craze has started to wear off. So, to get peoples’ attention back, he decides to climb over his enclosure and hang from the net ceiling above the lions den next to him. A large crowd of people gather watching the spectacle in awe and terror. Suddenly the man loses his grip and falls to the floor of the lion’s den. The man starts screaming “HELP!! HELP!!!” Suddenly a lion pounces him from behind and whispers in his ear, “Shut the heck up right now or you’re going to get us both fired.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: COHABITING AND SOCIAL WELFARE PAYMENTS Christine Fitzgerald, Karen & Aoife Delaney,Emer O’ Connor, Orla O’ Shea, Suzanne Donovan, Aisling O’ Connor, Neasa O’ Flaherty, Sean, Tim, Kate, Evie O’ Donoghu

Question I applied for a means-tested Jobseeker’s Allowance, but I was told that I’m not eligible because of my partner’s earnings. Why is this? We live together but we are not married and we split our expenses equally. Answer The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) treats married and unmarried couples in the same way when assessing entitlement to a means-tested social welfare payment. It assesses the total income of the household, rather than the circumstances of the individual claimant. If you are married or are cohabiting, the means of your spouse or partner are also taken into account. This is the case even if only one of you is actually claiming a payment. The DEASP uses detailed definitions and criteria to assess whether a couple are cohabiting and you can read these online at welfare.ie.

Bridie, David & Aidan and Fr Healy .

Offer of the Week Keep that fire going!

5 Bales of Briquettes and 20kg bag of CosyGlo Smokeless Coal

The way the means of a couple is assessed can differ slightly, depending on the payment being applied for. For Blind Pension, State Pension (Non-Contributory) and Carer’s Allowance, the DEASP adds all of your means together and then halves the total to get the assessable means for each of you. For Jobseeker’s Allowance, Disability Allowance, and Farm Assist, the DEASP adds all your combined means together and then assesses the total against the maximum household payment for your circumstances. If your partner is getting a social welfare payment in their own right, then your means are taken to be half of the total means of yourself and your partner. Sometimes a certain amount of income, or income from particular sources, is not taken into account. This is called an income disregard. For example, a certain amount of income from employment can be disregarded.

TORQUING CARS! TOYOTA CALLS TIME ON DIESEL

At a press conference in Geneva ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, Toyota announced that it will phase out diesel engines from all its passenger cars* in 2018, and will focus on more environmentally sustainable vehicles, led by self-charging hybrid electric cars. Toyota is the first mainstream car brand to take immediate action away from diesel, which includes all current and future generation passenger cars. The decision was made due to the success of its hybrid electric cars and the continued high demand they are experiencing for these cleaner vehicles. In Ireland, diesel passenger car sales have seen a 17% decline year on year between January 2017 and January 2018, and Toyota Ireland’s diesel car sales are now at only 20% of its overall mix, compared to 60% just two short years ago. In contrast, hybrid electric cars now represent almost 50% of Toyota Ireland’s car sales mix, helping it achieve the No.1 market position for retail car sales in Ireland for the first two months of 2018. Giving Toyota Ireland’s perspective on the announcement, Steve Tormey, CEO of Toyota Ireland said, “I am proud to be in the driver’s seat of a company that is willing to make the difficult decision to lead the Irish market out of diesel and help deliver cleaner air quality for our future and that of our children’s’ children. “Today’s announcement is reflective of our ‘Built for a Better World’ brand purpose, and is another proof point of how serious we are to delivering alternative, cleaner mobility solutions. “Similar to the Irish Government, Toyota too has a vision for a zero emissions society, which we believe can be a reality by 2050. Toyota’s selfcharging hybrid electric cars are in electric mode for up to 55% of the time and have the best technology today to help achieve the move to full electrification.” Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten said, “I welcome Toyota’s leadership on this. As a country we have no option but to move towards a zero emissions vehicle society to help protect our environment, improve our health and to ensure the next generation doesn’t suffer from complacency or inaction now. Climate change requires all of us to make changes and Toyota’s initiative will significantly help lead us on our low-carbon journey.”

‘IT’S A MARKET TREND WE CAN’T IGNORE’ – HONDA DITCHES DIESEL FOR CR-V SUV

Diesel may not be dead but it’s certainly languishing in the hospital waiting room as far as Honda is concerned. A petrol-electric hybrid has taken over from diesel as the economy option in the CR-V SUV, which will be a first for the Japanese company when it goes on sale later this year. Like all other manufacturers, Honda is trying to plan for a highly uncertain future. Although electrification and driverless technology are undoubtedly attracting political vigour and plenty of inspirational rhetoric, the reality is that the – and particularly the infrastructure required for both – are sadly lagging behind. Nagadome-san, the car’s chief project engineer, admitted during the Geneva motor show: “At the moment it looks like we will be replacing diesel with a hybrid, it’s a trend in the market we cannot ignore. However, diesel is still attractive, although while it is discussed at a political level [as it is currently] we are not sure what will happen, whether the situation will stabilise.” But from Honda’s perspective it seems that diesel may have had its day. Although it prides itself on its research and development, Honda has a relatively small budget for such activities and therefore cannot hope to drive development on all fronts of propulsion, although it arguably it is still among the leaders in the field of hydrogen fuel cells.

VOLVO XC40 WINS EUROPEAN CAR OF THE YEAR 2018

The Volvo XC40 has been awarded the title of 2018 Car of the Year by a panEuropean panel of judges, making it one of the most critically-acclaimed cars in recent years. The small Swedish SUV was received well when it was unveiled in September 2017 and has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews ever since. In January, the XC40 earned the title of What Car? Car of the Year 2018, while its larger sibling the XC60 won the UK Car of the Year (UKCOTY). In road tests, it continued to perform well, earning a five-star rating on the initial overseas drive, followed by an 8 out of 10 score when we reviewed it on British roads. “Winning this award with our new XC40 is perfect timing,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Volvo now has three globally available SUVs in its range for the first time. The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fast-growing small SUV segment.”Critics have commended the way it looks, which is undoubtedly a key selling point in this segment, as well as the ride and handling. The ‘small SUV’ category is among the most competitive and the Volvo’s starting price of around £28,000 puts it at the top of the market; it’s main rivals include the Audi Q3 and the Land Rover Discovery Sport. 46

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR AWAY TRIP FOR THE KERRY SENIOR FOOTBALLERS AND HURLERS: The build-up to the re-fixed Allianz National Football League Division 1 game against Dublin has been overshadowed by the 4pm throw in time. Firstly it should be acknowledged that the snow has cost the Kerry Ladies a chance to play in Croke Park as originally this game was supposed to be a double header. Indeed with a 4pm throwin for the men’s I don’t understand why the Ladies game could not have been re scheduled for 2pm. Kerry fans are not happy with the 4pm start time but as will always happen it is the TV schedules that will win out. It is interesting that the game is on Eirsport – a pay-per-view channel – as TG4 have the rights to Sunday games. Obviously a deal was done in the back ground. The other reason why Kerry fans were not the priority when this game was being re-fixed is that thw GAA know they will get around 30,000 Dublin fans. Kerry will probably have a couple of hundred cheering them on as the County League also gets underway on Sunday so no one involved in the teams in the 5 Divisions will be able to travel. It is not fair on those that go all around the country to League games that this has happened. But with the season now squashed into a shortened time frame there are very few options in the calendar. On the field Kerry are the defending champions but have been hot and cold this season. Dublin have been flying so it will be a tough task. But Dublin will also weary of the Kingdom following last year’s League final defeat. And it’s a game Kerry need to win but can they? The hurlers are also on the road as they face Westmeath in Mullingar on Sunday throwing in at 1pm. The home side are unbeaten while Kerry have won 3 of their 4 games so this one will go a long way to sorting out who will still be in contention at the end of the 70 minutes. Kerry will also be keeping an eye on Carlow who are expected to beat Meath as they will then move onto 8 points. It promises to be a big few hours in the League for both Kerry sides and we will know much more about their prospects on Sunday afternoon.

TRALEE ADVERTISER

TWO TRALEE BOXING MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS: Tralee has two more Munster Champions this week as the Tralee Boxing Clubs John and Mike McCarthy brought home the titles after wins in mid-week. In the Youth 1 48kg John McCarthy out boxed Dean O’Brien from Charleville winning all three rounds comfortably. Mike McCarthy took on James Casey from the Southside BC in Limerick. In a great display his opponent hardly laid a glove on the Tralee fighter in their 3 round bout. Tralee Boxing Club’s Donie Griffin was in the boy’s corner along with Tommy Kelliher and told the Tralee Advertiser that the wins are a just reward for the boys for the work they put into their sport. “These lads are training for the last 7 years sparring each other day in day and out bringing each other along with Patrick (McCarthy) the reigning Irish Champion. These three boys have a great bond between them and it was great to see both of them winning on the night”. The boys have no time to rest as this Friday they are heading for the National Stadium for the 2018 All Irelands. There will be a number of other boxers from Kerry at the Nationals from the Cashen Vale and Ballyduff boxing clubs. The sport is certainly on a high at the moment so hopefully by next week we will have more Irish champions. SEAN ON THE SHORT LIST: There was more great news for underage soccer in Kerry when Tralee Dynamos and 15’s League of Ireland player Sean Kennedy was short listed for the FAI International u15 Player of the Year Award. The 28th 3 International Football Awards will take place in the RTE Studios on Sunday March 18th. Sean is a current member of the Irish u16 team and has been attracting a lot of attention from cross channel clubs. STACKS 100 WINS GAA MCNAMEE AWARD: The Black and Amber are well used to celebrating on the field successes. Now they are celebrating a national award for their off field activities. Their ‘Stacks 100’ project celebrating the centenary of the club is the winner of the Best New Digital Initiative Friday 9th March 2018

category at the McNamee Awards – the GAA communications and media awards. At the beginning of last year the club launched its www.stacks100. ie site which gathered the history of the club in a number of media forms under the guidance of Rory Kirby and club chairman Liam Lynch. This is the second McNamee Award for the club as they won the Best Club Project in 2014 for “Rockumentary”. Austin Stacks will be presented with their award on Thursday March 29th in Croke Park. BASH THE BOOKIES: As a person who bets only a couple of times a year I am not going to attempt to do any previews for Cheltenham in this column. Over the course of this week and next there will be lots of advice available on who to follow for the big national hunt meeting of the year – Cheltenham. All I will say is that we will all be watching the Coopers closely and hope that they and Oisin Murphy and Jack Kennedy have a great and safe week. And for those from the town that are heading over then it’s the same wish – have a great and safe week!! BUSY WEEK AT THE TRACK: Following the recent inclement weather this has been a busy week at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium. There was racing on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Tonight Friday night is the rearranged 12 Race program with the highlight being the final of the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic Final. There will be two race meetings on Saturday with the re-arranged SIS program from last Saturday commencing at 2.12pm followed by the night time racing starting at 7.42pm. On Friday night April 16th the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League are holding their Buster Race fundraiser and all support will be greatly appreciated. The track is now taking entries for the William Costello Construction coursing bred sweepstake over 325 yards commencing on Saturday Mar 31st, the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling memorial for A1 current 570yds starting on March 23rd and the Lee Strand 550yds for confined A3 greyhounds starting on Friday Apr 21st.All entries to racing office

IT TRALEE LADIES ON THE VERGE OF MOYNIHAN CUP GLORY: This Friday is a big day for the Tralee IT Ladies as they head to Dublin for the semi-finals of the Moynihan Cup where they will face Letterkenny IT with a 3pm throwin. The game will take place at IT Blanchardstown where the Andrew Duggan coached side will look to continue their recent good form. They were beaten in the League final before Christmas, going down to St Mary’s Belfast. In this competition they defeated UCD and Mary I. The other semi-final is also on Friday where St Mary’s will take on Dundalk IT with the final set for Saturday evening at 7pm in Abbotstown GAA National Development Centre. CBS BOYS READY FOR THEIR BIG DAY: With the Corn Ui Mhuiri final called off due to the sad passing of young Aodhan O’Connor the players from Pobalscoil Chorcha Dhuibhne and Tralee CBS will be looking to put on a performance to honour his memory when the two sides meet on Saturday. The game throws in at the Fitzgerald Stadium at 1pm with the winner facing the winner of the Ulster schools MacRory Cup in the Hogan Cup semi-final on March 28th. COUNTY LEAGUE CAMPAIGN BEGINS: This weekend the County Senior League gets underway, unfortunately clashing with the re-fixed Kerry game. In Division 1 Kerins O’Rahillys and John Mitchels will fly the Tralee flag and will be battling hard to retain their status in the top Division. Both are away this Sunday with Mitchels at Beaufort and Rahilly’s going to Templenoe. Austin Stacks will be looking to bounce right back from last season relegation to Division 2 and will be amongst the favourites to do so. They open away to Kilcummin this Sunday in a tricky encounter. Ballydonoghue and St Pat’s Blennerville provide the Tralee area interest in Division 3. Both also travel for their opening games on Sunday when St Pat’s go to Listry and Ballydonoghue are at Keel. There is no local interest in Division 4 while two B team’s, from Stacks and Rahilly’s, are in Division 5 Group A. There are 15 teams split into Group A and B with the top 4 from each section going on to the promotion phase. GARVEY’S SUPERLEAGUE HOPES SET TO RIGHT DOWN TO THE BUZZER: This season’s SuperLeague race is set to right down to the final buzzer as there are still 5 teams in contention with one weekend to go. When Killester defeated Templeogue on Tuesday night it left three sides tied on 45 points – Pyrobel Killester, UCD Marian and Garvey’s Tralee Warriors while Griffith Swords Thunder and Black Amber Templeogue are on 42

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER points will all teams having played 20 games. By the time this edition comes out the Warriors will have completed their very difficult away game at Black Amber Templeogue. Both sides will be doing everything they can to take the points but the home side need them more. Garvey’s Tralee Warriors last game of the season sees them at home to Belfast Star in the Complex this Saturday night. While the visitors are not in contention for overall honours they will still want to put up a good display so Mark Bernsen and his charges will not be taking anything for granted. There are possible permutations for play-offs etc but the Tralee side will not be looking beyond Saturday night. Another sell-out crowd is expected in the Complex with an 8pm tip-off. EXCITING TIMES ON THE SOCCER FRONT: The next few weeks will certainly be of huge interest to Kerry soccer fans with some big games taking place. First up the Kerry u17’s begin their new season with a trip to Dublin to play Cabinteely on March 18th followed by a home game a week later when UCD come to Tralee on Sunday March 25th. Darren Aherne and his coaches and backroom team of Tim Collins, John Kerley, Darragh O’Riordan and Chris Hegarty and they have been joined by Billy Dennehy who will bring his vast experience in the game to the team. Billy and his brother Darren are now starring with Limerick FC in the League of Ireland. Billy has always been involved in coaching in Kerry doing work in the past with the Schoolboys League and it is great to see him back involved. The 15’s League of Ireland will kick off in Mounthawk Park on Friday night, March 23rd under lights when Cobh Ramblers are the visitors. This should attract a huge crowd as the first full season at this age group kicks off. The squad has been training hard under the management team of Danny Diggins, JP Mullins and Jimmy Clancy. On the home front St Brendan’s Park have two big games on the national stage starting this weekend. On Sunday their Youths go to Kilkenny to face Freebooters in the FAI Youths Cup quarter final. Unfortunately for the club side the overlapping of the season means the Park have seen 5 players move up to the 17’s League of Ireland. However they will still have a very good side on duty and will be quietly confident. The following week their 14’s will be heading to Dublin to take on Leicester Celtic from the DDSL in the 14’s National Cup quarter final. Kerry officials have a very good reputation on the national stage and three of the top in the country are on FAI Junior Cup duty. Derek O’Shea will be in the middle for the Usher Celtic (Dublin) v St Micheal’s Tipperary game. Assisting him will be Anthony Morrison and Eddie O’Mahoney. The trio also did a game in the previous round and

having them officiate at this level is of great pride to all in the game in Kerry. LACEY CUP A HUGE SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE BIKES: The 2018 Lacey Cup turned out to be a huge success with almost 130 riders taking part including over 40 A1 riders, the top category. Organisers have an anxious few days in the run up to Sunday but the weather proved to be on the side of cycling and the roads were perfect on the day of the race. Once again the host Tralee Manor West BC club pulled out all the stops and has a huge group of volunteers on duty to steward all the junctions and the peloton on the 75km loop from the Dingle Road to just beyond the Galley where the race finished with the annual sprint down the short mountain. After a very exciting race with lots of attacks the trophy went to Matteo Cigala, the Italian native who is resident in Navan and riding with the new Viner Carnac Pactimo team – where he has Sean Lacey as a teammate. Completing the top three were Paul Kennedy of Newcastlewest CC and Tom Shanahan from Limerick CC. Ken Cummins from Midleton CC took the win in the A4 race and the inaugural Eddie Lacey Trophy presented by his widow Anne. From a local point of view in the main race Richard Cleverly from Sliabh Luachra CC was 9th, Cathal Moynihan, Tralee Manor West BC 10th (winning the Billy Nolan Trophy for the first Tralee BC rider) and Sean Lacey 11th. Shane Fleming (Tralee Manor West BC) was third in the A4 race with Richie O’Sullivan from the Chaingang in 6th and Fleming’s teammate Stephen Griffin in 7th. Kieran Coggins won the Jackie O’Connor Trophy for the first host club rider over the Gleann na Gealt taking the Jackie O’Connor Trophy while the Teddy Griffin Trophy went to the overall winner as he was first across the top of Sliabh Mish. PARNELLS NEWS: After the unexpected week, off training will be back on track this week with the u14 camogie players at the Tralee IT Astro this Friday from 7 to 8pm. Under 12 Super Games Hurling Blitzes: Due to the inclement weather in recent days, the start of the under 12 Super Games Hurling Blitzes have been postponed until March 10th. Helmet and Equipment Scheme 2018: South Kerry GDA David O’Dea is once again running the equipment scheme. Contact any club members for full details. Easter Camp: The Easter Camp takes place from Monday March 26th to 28th and is open to boys and girls and costs e25. These camps always prove popular with the boys and girls that attend. Closer Links between Camogie and Wider GAA: As a dual club of the kind that foster both Camogie and Hurling among our children, it is good in Parnells to see this recent announcement from Croke Park.

The GAA, Camogie Association and Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) are pleased to announce that draft memorandums of understanding have been agreed between the GAA and the Camogie Association, and between the GAA and the LGFA. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The club is hoping for a big turnout for Tralee’s St Patricks Day Parade which will begin at the Rose Hotel Roundabout. There will be family fun in The Mall after the parade. The u6/u8’s and u10’s will train as normal this week after being interrupted by the recent storms. The u12 really enjoyed their trip to Cork where they took on Bishopstown and St Fionbarr’s. They are back in training this Sunday. The u14’s are indoors on Friday and outdoors on Sunday with their League starting on March 8th. The u15’s are heading to Fermoy on March 24th for the Pa O’Brien tournament while the u16’s are holding a flag day around the town so any support will be greatly appreciated. The A team will be in Division 1 and will play Laune Rangers while the B’s are in Division 3 and open against St Pats. Summer Dates: The Hurling camp will take place in Caherslee from 13th to 17th August Before that the football camp will be in Connolly Park from 2nd to 6th July. The club wishes its players who are involved in the Corn Ui Mhuiri final this Sunday all the best. SCOR NEWS: The Greater Tralee Area of Scor na bPaisti will take place on Tuesday March 20th at 6.30pm in the Gaelscoil. Entries must be in by next Monday March 12th. In Scor Senior the set dancers from Austin Stacks are in Munster final action this Saturday, March 10th in Cappamore County Limerick. Hopefully they will dance their way to the All Ireland finals that will take place in the Knockrea Arena Sligo IT on Saturday April 14th. CAMOGIE GAME OFF: It’s disappointing to see any team pull out of a national competition. Kerry camogie were due to face Wicklow at home this week in the Littlewoods Ireland National Camogie League but this is off as the Garden County side have withdrawn from the competition. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 9,16,24 and 30 with the next jackpot being e6,500 and the draw being in O’Dwyers this Sunday night. Sunday’s weather allowed the juvenile players to get out training and the u6’s put in another energetic session. The players of the week trophy went to Jace and Rylan Flynn. The u8’s were in Cumann Iosef Friday 9th March 2018

Gym where they were able to show off all their newly learned skills. Stephen Enright was named the player of the week. Luke Passway took the honours for the week for the u10’s. The u12’s Boys and Girls are looking ahead to their League which starts off on April 8th and are training as usual this week. The u14’s Boys and Girls and the u16’s training times will be sent to the clubs, The Minors game against Beale in Round 2 was called off and will be rescheduled. This weekend in Round 3 they are away to Beaufort in the Minor League.
