KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: JURY SERVICE Question I have been called for jury service but I’m not sure if I can take the time off work. What are my employment rights if I attend for jury service? Answer If you are in employment, there is a duty on your employer to allow you to attend for jury service. Time spent on jury service must be treated as if you were actually employed. In other words, you are entitled to be paid while you are away from work. Anyone with a contract of employment (including temporary or contract workers) is entitled to be paid by the employer while on jury service. There should be no loss of any other employment rights while you serve on a jury. The Jury Office of the court will provide a certificate of attendance on request. If you are self-employed and work alone and your attendance at jury service may mean that you can’t earn a living, you may qualify to be excused from jury service. Contact the Jury Office for more information. The County Registrar or the trial judge may also excuse you if satisfied that there is good reason for doing so. Some people have a right to be excused from jury service, including: • Full-time students • People who are 65 years of age or older • Those who provide an important community service, such as practising doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, vets, chemists, etc. • People in certain official positions (for example, members of the Oireachtas) • Some public officials whose work can’t be postponed or done by others • Those who have served on a jury within the last three years, or who remain excused by a judge following previous service If you serve on a jury and feel your employment rights have been infringed or you have lost employment rights as a result, you can make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission using the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. Read more about enforcing your employment rights on citizensinformation.ie.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Cycling

John is hoping to do the Ring of Kerry cycle and is getting into top gear with the new bicycle he bought through work on the cycle to work scheme. He is wondering about relevant rules of the road for cycling now he is out on the highways and byeways. Here are just a few of cycling law and do’s and don’ts. Always obey the Rules of the Road, being safe and visible is paramount and even though cyclists are not required by law to wear helmets or high visibility clothing common-sense dictates otherwise. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head injury by a whopping 69%-85%. Helmets are a must have especially for kiddies so get one with a CE mark and EN 1078 ( showing it meets European Safety standards) and that fits at your local bike shop. High visibility vests are cheap to buy and can also be obtained free at your local Garda Station or at the Road Safety Authority online at RSA.ie. Again make sure they comply with European Safety Standard -EN417 for Adults and EN 1150/1999 for children. See www.rsa.ie for more information. An on the spot fine €40 has been introduced for e.g. Cyclist driving without reasonable consideration, No front lamp or rear lamp lit during lighting-up hours on a pedal cycle, Cycling in a pedestrianised area, Breaking a red light or railway barrier of sailing past a School Warden sign. This has to be paid within 28 days. A Cyclist must not cycle more than 2 abreast, except when overtaking and it does not endanger or obstruct other traffic. You can’t hang onto a moving vehicle to have a rest. Driving a bicycle under the influence of drink or drugs has a large fine attached to it -€2,500 at present. A bicycle ridden in a public place at night should have front lights, which are either white, or yellow and a rear light which must be red. One can also use flashing lights. The bicycle should also have a loud bell and back and front brakes and the bicycle should be in reasonable working order. No NCT’s for bicycles yet! Happy and safe cycling to all the cyclists on Kerry Roads over the next few months. Legal Quip : My dog used to chase everyone on a bicycle. Until I took his bike away. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... THREE TRALEE PLAYERS MAKE IRISH BASKETBALL SQUAD! Kieran Donaghy(Tralee Warriors ) , Ryan Leonard (Tralee Warriors ) and Cian O Sullivan (La Salle University ) have been chosen this week on the initial panel of 20 players on the Irish Senior Mens Basketball Squad .by Irish Senior Men’s Head Coach Pete Strickland . Eight of the 12 Men’s Super League teams are represented, with four players from both Templeogue and UCC Demons making the cut alongside players from Garvey’s Tralee Warriors, UCD Marian, Griffith Swords Thunder, Pyrobel Killester, SSE Airtricity Moycullen and Belfast Star. Four Irish players who are currently playing basketball overseas also feature on the list. Speaking about the squad announcement Strickland stated: “On behalf of our current Irish Senior Men’s National team staff of

Assistant Coach Ioannis Liapakis and Team Manager Tom O’Malley, it is an honor to announce the selection of our initial 20 basketball players for the Irish Men’s National Team. Selecting just twenty from a far more expansive grouping of quality players in the country was difficult. Nonetheless, preparing for the 2018 Small Nations Tournament demands that we now begin the process of building a team that all Irish basketball players, indeed, all of Ireland, can be proud of. Training will commence this April, allowing our team members to complete their respective seasons with their current club and university teams,” he continued. “It is my avowed goal to make this Irish team a living embodiment to teamwork, hard work and basketball acumen that all of Europe must contend with. Personally, I am thrilled to follow in the

footsteps of friends, mentors and colleagues such as Danny Fulton, Enda Byrt, Bill Dooley, Gerry Fitzpatrick, Jay Larranaga, and others, as well as recently acquainted Collin O’Reilly, all men who have successfully coached the Irish squad in years past.”

Strickland will return to Ireland in April where he – along with Assistant Coach Ioannis Liopakis – will bring the squad together for their first training session.

TY JACK FROM CAUSEWAY WINS TOP PRESS AWARD Jack Farrell, a talented Transition Year student from Causeway Comprehensive School, has been awarded 1st prize for his photo ‘An Autumn Stroll’ at the annual NewsBrands Ireland Press Pass Awards which took place in Dublin’s Convention Centre on Friday, 10 March 2017. The awards, which are now in their fifth year, seek to improve literacy and critical thinking skills while helping students to develop a deeper understanding of news media and how it communicates about the world around them. The national competition seeks original journalism entries in 5 categories: Features, Opinion, News, Sport and Photojournalism. 8,000 Transition Year students took part in this year’s initiative and 16 of those students were awarded for their original journalism, created as part of the NewsBrands Ireland Newspapers-in-Education programme. Finian McGrath T.D., Minister for State with special responsibility for Disabilities, 10

TRALEE ADVERTISER

attended the awards and presented students with their awards. Speaking at the awards in the Convention Centre he said: “Newspapers have a vital role to play in any free society. They are watchdogs, chroniclers and the eyes and ears that go where most can not be. Press Pass is a wonderful initiative that promotes literacy and critical thinking skills by bringing newspapers into classrooms and encouraging students to study them in depth. “When you engage with newspapers you engage with society. When young people engage with society, that society benefits enormously from their input and their energy. I am delighted that 70,000 Transition Year students have had the opportunity to study newspapers in their classrooms through the Press Pass programme and I am certain that each and every one of them is a more engaged and better informed citizen as a result.” Mr McGrath commented.” Friday 17th March 2017

The audience, made up of nominated students, their teachers and families also heard from Michael Clifford of the Irish Examiner, who was the NewsBrands Ireland Journalist of the Year 2016. Mr Clifford highlighted the value of quality, professional journalism and the importance of a trusted media. Participating schools receive newspapers and a specially created workbook free of charge. Students

are encouraged to engage with the newspapers in the classroom, to analyse them and then to create their own original journalism, the best of which was entered into a national competition. The winners were selected by a panel of newspaper editors and journalists, chaired by Professor John Horgan, the former Press Ombudsman.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KILDARE HOSTS PRESTIGIOUS ROSE TOUR AHEAD OF 2017 ROSE OF TRALEE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL LAST year’s day-long Rose experience in Kildare was so successful, the county will double the hospitality in 2017 and welcome the International Roses for two-days next August, before the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The Rose of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney flew in from Chicago today to join the Mayor of Kildare, Cllr Ivan Keatley, to announce details of this year’s authentic Kildare Rose of Tralee Tour Programme. Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth will be the home to the Roses for two nights on 13th and 14th August, while Kildare Fáilte and Kildare County Council will facilitate a “behind the scenes” tour of key Kildare flagship locations such as The K Club, Kildare Village, the Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens and Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Centre. The Rose of Tralee International Festival Managing Director, Anthony O’Gara, said: “We thank Kildare County Council, the Glenroyal Hotel and the many wonderful tourist attractions in Kildare for inviting the Roses enjoy your county again this year. We are grateful to the people of Kildare who have opened their county to welcome the Roses.”

The Kildare Tourism Rose of Tralee Showcase will commence with a Civic Reception at the headquarters of Kildare County Council, Naas on Sunday 13th August. Mr. Peter Carey, Chief Executive, Kildare County Council, said: “Kildare County Council, in partnership with our Tourism attractions, will welcome all the 2017 Roses who are vying for the title of Rose of Tralee to experience a short break in Kildare next August. This is a wonderful opportunity to promote Kildare as a county to visit and spend some time exploring and enjoying wealth of experiences. We wish the Roses from near and far, as well as their families, a wonderful stay in Kildare, and we hope that they will gather wonderful memories to share with friends and relations.” Over the course of their twoday tour of Kildare, the Roses will visit the world renowned five star luxury K Club. Home to two championship golf courses and the 2016 Irish Open, The K Club is Ireland’s first AA Red Star Property. The Roses will look forward to being introduced to Kildare’s living Equine legacy at the Irish National Stud & Gardens. Home to equine royalty and the world famous Japanese Gardens, the Roses will be

IT TRALEE WIN RORY O’CONNOR FRESHER FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Last Thursday night saw IT Tralee Fresher Football team travel to CIT to play Waterford IT in the Rory O’Connor Fresher Football Championship final. Fresh from winning the Division 2 league before Christmas, IT Tralee were hopeful of a league and championship double. However, this championship brought with it an extra incentive as it is named after former IT Tralee student and Fresher Football player Rory O’Connor. Rory, who was from Banteer in Co. Cork and was a member of the 2010/11 IT Tralee Fresher Football team. Unfortunately, just two days after Rory had scored the winning goal to help IT Tralee win the 2010/11 league title, he lost his life in a car accident. On the Night , Tralee started stronger and finished stronger ....IT Tralee 2-11 Waterford IT 1-09

BIG CROWDS EXPECTED FOR ROSE HOTEL CIRCUIT OF KERRY RALLY A counting round of the locally sponsored Top Part West Coast Rally championship, the April 2nd event is expected to attract some of the best drivers in Ireland and further afield to compete on some the best rally roads in Ireland. Already confirmed is former winner and multiple Northern Irish Rally Champion Derek McGarrity in his state-of-art Ford Fiesta World Rally Car. Triton Showers boss Kevin Barrett, a driver with strong Kerry connections, will contest the rally in his Subaru Impreza WRC and will be aiming on a top result in what he considers one of his local events. Last year’s Circuit of Munster winner, Steve Wood, is also entered in his Subaru Impreza and will employ Abbeyfealebased co-driver Keith Moriarty for the weekend. Moriarty is very much looking forward to his local stages. Additional big names are expected to commit after this 18

weekend’s West Cork Rally in Clonakilty. Next Monday night’s launch of the event gets underway at 7pm in the Rose Hotel when clerk of the course, Tralee man Richard Talbot, outlines some of the route details and reveals some of the star names that have entered the nine-stage, 120km rally. It is the longest possible mileage allowed under current Motorsport Ireland rules for a one day rally, offering a great challenge to the driver and an incredible spectacle for the 1000s of fans expected in Tralee for the weekend. Richard Talbot said: “The Circuit of Kerry is one of the most important events on the Irish rally calendar. World rally star Paul Nagle cut his teeth on this rally and recorded one of his first national rally wins on this rally when it was based in Dingle.” An extensive route survey Friday 17th March 2017

has already taken place and residents in the proposed route have offered their allimportant support to the rally. A total of nine stages, in a three-by-three format, using roads not used in The Kingdom for many years, and on stages made famous by the old-style Circuit of Ireland, ensures that competitors and fans can look forward to a long

and challenging rally. Another plus point for the rally is that driver sign-on, the service park, and other event-related activities are all housed within the Rose Hotel’s complex, making it a very easy event to manage from both an organiser and competitor point-of-view.

NUTRITION IS KEY!!!

Do diets work? Nearly all diets will work in the short term but almost all diets are not suitable for everyone as a long term solution as they will peak and lead to’’ falling off the wagon and gaining more weight than you started with’’. It should be a nutritional plan that suits the client and the client never finds it a struggle to eat well most of the time. The best idea is to talk one of our nutrition experts and we can make up a long term, healthy nutrition plan that will be easy to stick to. Remember there is no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

YOU ARE A LIAR

We all lie, not just to each other but to ourselves. This is no different to when it comes our nutrition. we all have a tendency to lie to ourselves about how much food and what food we have eaten. Using food logs, planning the meals for the week and doing meal prep where you can have plenty of healthy foods that match your unique nutritional requirements easily accessible at all times

LOGAN MOVIE Director: James Mangold Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Stephen Merchant. Plot: Logan is the latest and last instalment of the Wolverine saga. It sees an older, rugged Logan (Hugh Jackman) in the near future, hiding and taking care of a sick and elderly Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Then their solitude is interrupted when the task of escorting a young mutant Laura (Dafne Keen) to the Canadian border and away from government officials who are hot on their tails The Wolverine franchise is a bit like the character himself seemingly impossible to kill, after two less than stellar stand-alone films (Wolverine: Origins and The Wolverine) the third time’s the charm it seems as it might just revolutionise the superhero genre. This film, which is more like an indie drama than a blockbuster superhero sees Wolverine dealing with his own mortality and legacy. Those two themes loom large over the movie. There is also the father-son relationship between Logan and Professor X and the father-daughter relationship between Logan and Laura. This film feels far more personal and grounded than other superhero films tend to be. The director James Mangold who also directed The Wolverine keeps a certain grim and realistic tone which makes the film feel different and original. He finally gives the character the great film it deserves as it shows Wolverine’s struggle with himself and his inner demons. He also got the film a 16’s rating in Irish cinema’s which fans have always wanted to see, a gory, violent and realistic Wolverine film. The realistic tone lets the actors of the movie give deep and layered performances. Hugh Jackman’s Logan tries not to let his anger and pain control him while Patrick Stewart tries to control his powers while his sickness consumes him. This adds a sadness to the film not seen in other superhero movies Mr Movie Fact: Hugh Jackman and James Mangold took a paycut so that the film could be rated 16’s.

Say goodbye to dentures and adhesives forever! Are you tired of sore gums, ill fitting dentures and messy denture adhesive? Would you love to smile and eat with confidence?

Teeth in a Day (All on 4) is a proven, revolutionary dental treatment for a patient that is missing all their natural teeth and who is tired of wearing an ill fitting and often sore denture. While there are many options available to people who struggle with an ill-fitting denture, our ‘Teeth in a Day’ (Implant Supported Bridges) offer you the chance to throw your denture away for good and feel the benefits of never having to worry about a denture again. They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’

Restore your smile, your chewing ability and your confidence in just one day. Missing teeth causes bone loss. Significant bone loss can shrink the contours of the jaw bone, causing wrinkled lips and a sunken mouth and chin. Teeth in a Day Fixed Implant Supported Bridges are a durable solution with natural looking replacement teeth. There’s no plate. It’s simply secured on four or more dental implants. This solution stimulates bone maintenance, restores chewing function, and gets rid of the uncomfortable and painful feeling of wearing dentures.

Advantages of ‘Teeth in a Day’ Fixed Implant Supported Bridges (All on 4)

• No more painful and ill fitting dentures • Natural looking smile restored • Fully fixed and non-removable • Chewing ability is restored, can chew all types of food • No more removing dentures or denture adhesive • Prevents further bone loss • Go from no teeth, to fixed teeth in one day • Minimal pain/discomfort during procedure • Recovery time is minimal

Teeth in a Day

Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Inventor of the Dental Implant.

How it works

At your free consultation, we’ll take the time to listen to you, address your concerns and questions and fully explain the procedure and the options available to you. If you decide to proceed, a full clinical examination will be carried out by Dr. Colm O’Loghlen including X rays and 3D CT scanning. We are one of only a few clinics in Ireland with a CT scanner on site. This minimises patient inconvenience and allows for the most advanced analysis of your teeth and needs. The full implant procedure is carried out in one day. The implants are placed in the morning and you leave that afternoon with fully fixed teeth having thrown your denture in the bin!

Nervous?

If you’re nervous, no problem, the procedure is pain free, and some of our patients elect to have a IV sedation or a mild oral sedative to complete the treatment.

Testimonials “I am so happy. Colm really has changed my life” “I had sedation – the time did fly! I had 4 implants in my upper jaw. I didn’t feel them going in, and it didn’t hurt at all” “My enjoyment of food – the flavour and the texture is just so much better” “I am so thrilled to show off my teeth – and all my friends and family can see why I went for this option. No way I’d go back. No regrets.”

LOCAL – Have all your treatment completed in Tralee with Dr Colm O’Loghlen.

• Transparent pricing policy • A full range of treatment options to stabilise loose dentures • Tax relief applicable treatment • Sedation available • Payment plan available • Affordable • FREE consultation

SAFER – With our own CT Scanning equipment, digitally planning your procedure results in safer implant placement. KINDER – Dr Colm O’Loghlen’s experience, training and technology investment, leads to quicker surgery, reduced swelling and improved recovery time. We’ve just been honored to be announced as the only accredited All-on-4 implant provider in Kerry and Cork. We’ve been recognised due to Dr O’Loghlens extensive experience.

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK! Last weekend I attended The Irish Beauty Show for the first time, why have I taken so long to attend one? WHO KNOWS. Will I be attending another? YAAAASSS. I loved it. We went early Sunday morning so that it wouldn’t be too crowded and things wouldn’t be sold out. It was busy, but breathable at the same time. There were SO many different stands, especially nail related ones, so if you do nails or

are interested in nail products, 100% get yourself to the next Irish Beauty Show! My favourite stands were, Ardell Lashes, Blank Canvas Cosmetics(of course) and CatwalkHQ Tan – the women I was talking to were lovely! Among those stands there were loads of others, SOSU, Cocoa Brown, Glam&Co Cosmetics, Benefit, Crown Brush, HD Brows, Wow Brown Tan, Nima Brushes & so many more. It was great to

BLANK CANVAS COSMETICS – If you read this page frequently you know I absolutely love Blank Canvas! I got my absolute favourite Master Series One palette for €20(normally over €35) and an E25 Blending Brush for €5! BARGAIN. ARDELL LASHES – Everyone knows that Ardell Wispies are my absolute go to for everyday lashes. I wear them to work and I’ve been asked countless times are they my own lashes, they look natural but glam at the same time if you get me. The girl at the stand showed me the new Studio Effects Wispies, basically like the original ones but more layered for a slightly more defined and dramatic but still natural wispie look. I got 10 pairs for €33, they will literally last me months! I went back for more but they were sold out.

see such a huge amount of Irish Brands set up by amazing Irish Women at the show. And now for the exciting bit… what I got… I didn’t go too wild as I’m in the midst of making summer travel plans which look both amazing and expensive! I did get a fair bit all the same. Here’s what I picked up…

CATWALKHQ TAN – I follow Just Jordan on snapchat and she has been raving about this tan so I went to the stand to see what it was all about. The company is Irish and made in Ireland first of all, it’s Cruelty Free, and non toxic and paraben free, it’s safe to use for anyone going through Chemotherapy, vegan friendly and suitable for use during pregnancy. I got it in the dark and I’m yet to use it, I will use it this week and for the next few weeks and then let you know my thoughts. But if you are interested in trying it yourself, CH Tralee have it in stock! BEN NYE – I finally got my hands on the Ben Nye undereye Banana Powder! I have seen this used all over YouTube to highlight the under eye area(WITHOUT FLASHBACK). I got a pot for €13.

So that’s it for this week! Hope you all enjoyed this week’s light hearted post! Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! THIS WEEK I’M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT MY CURRENT FAVOURITE FITNESS RELATED PRODUCTS! SINCE I ALWAYS DO MORE INFORMATION BASED PAGES I FELT THIS WEEK IT WOULD BE NICE TO SWITCH IT UP.

2.2 LITRE WATER BOTTLE

WIRELESS HEADPHONES

I got one of these in UN Sports Nutrition, just a local supplements shop. It is SO handy! I like to get between 4 and 6 litres of water in a day and this makes it so easy and trackable. I fill it in the morning and then just count how many times I refill during the day. Hydration is key. I say it a lot but if you want to be in any way healthy and fit, start with your water intake.

I got these as a present for Christmas and I’m honestly obsessed with them. I normally would have had to have some type of pocket in my gym top or wear a zippy to hold my phone when I’m working out but now I don’t have to. It’s the little things! You just charge them up and go. Just make sure they’re fully charged before you head to the gym, no one wants their music to go mid gym sesh!

MYPROTEIN WHEY PROTEIN

Again, I have mentioned this before but it is a part of my everyday life(literally) and without it I wouldn’t be able to meet my protein goals. Its also so yummy! I add the Chocolate Brownie flavour to my porridge and the Salted Caramel with Almond milk and frozen spinach mixed post workout is key! MyProtein also always has sales on and is Labdoor Approved so you know there’s no bad stuff in it! If you ever have any questions about any supplement use Examine.com, it’s great! I also have a code to receive 25% off your first order, REBECCA-R5OS! I DON’T USE THE PROTEIN AS A MEAL REPLACEMENT. It’s an addition. I’m not a fan of replacing meals with shakes, just learn about what you’re putting into your body and why, that’s the secret!

Gymshark are restocking my favourite Flex Leggings soon so if you go to their website you can click to be notified when they’re back in stock!

MORE THAN JUST A RUB – WHAT MAKES A CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST? More than 80% of the public don’t know that there is a difference between Chartered physiotherapist and Physical Therapist. In 110 countries worldwide the title “Physiotherapist” is synonymous with Physical Therapist. The title’s are not protected by legislation in Ireland which creates much confusion. Only Chartered Physiotherapists can work in a hospital setting. It is outside the hospital setting most confusion arises. In Ireland training for physiotherapists includes musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory, rheumatology, neurology, pediatrics, gerontology and rehabilitation. It can only be completed in Trinity College Dublin, UCD, UL, RCSI or Jordanstown over four years full time study which includes 1000 hours clinically

supervised placements. The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapy provides accreditation for those who have gone through rigorous educational standards. Even though the term “physiotherapist” is not protected, “chartered physiotherapist” is, and those who

have accreditation are the only ones permitted to use the letters MISCP (Member Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists).

More over those who become members of ISCP are required to complete ongoing continuing professional development and practice combining evidence based practice with clinical excellence. They are held accountable by rigorous professional standards and expected to practice within defined guidelines so while a

physiotherapist may have the brains of a scientist, the heart of a humanist and the hands of an artist (if you must choose – choose chartered!!)

Pork... my favourite thing to eat! So here are different ways with pork for you to try this weekend. The tralee culinary gangsters have four new cooking videos on the facebook page traleeculinarygangsters.com and remember Saturday week we are going foraging for wild garlic in ballyseedy Woods .... all are welcome

WILTED GREENS WITH BACON VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS • • • •

4 hearts romaine, chopped 4 slices bacon 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup vinegar

METHOD Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Place romaine in a serving bowl. In a pan over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and crumble over greens. To the pan, add sugar and vinegar, and simmer until sugar is dissolved, scraping up bacon bits that cling to the bottom of the pan. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour hot dressing over greens and toss. Serve immediately

BACON STUFFED MUSHROOMS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup finely chopped onion 5 to 6 slices bacon, chopped 2 tablespoons bourbon One 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup breadcrumbs Pinch of salt and ground pepper 2 1/2 pounds fresh button mushrooms, stems removed Grated Parmesan, for topping

METHOD Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. In a large pan, cook the onions and bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove the mixture from the pan and set aside. In the same pan, add the bourbon and cream cheese and stir constantly until the cream cheese is melted and mixed with the bourbon. Add the onion and bacon mixture back into the pan and mix together. Add the breadcrumbs, salt and pepper and mix together. Spoon the mixture into the mushroom caps and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until the mushrooms are tender, 25 to 35 minutes. Top with some Parmesan and put back into the oven to allow the cheese to melt. Remove from the oven and serve.

HEALTHY EYES Whether we realise it or not our eyes take a serious amount of hammering on a day to day basis. Most of us are spending more time on computers, tablets, etc.- Driving, UV-sunlight, contact lenses, pollution and air conditioning all have a negative effect on our eyesight, not to mention the ageing process!!!! EATING HEALTHY FOR GOOD VISION: Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale also salmon, tuna and oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, citrus fruits and juices all have a role to play in helping to maintain healthy eyes. There are some very effective natural remedies available which may help to maintain your peepers! I have listed a few here for you but always ask in store for more information: • VIRIDIAN LUTEIN: a combination of nutrients and highly researched plant extracts which can help maintain eye health through to later years. Offering protection against free radical damage caused by dietary deficiency or environmental factors such as pollution and sunlight exposure. • VISUAL EYES: supports collagen structure of the eye and assures healthy blood supply to eye muscles and nerves. • A VOGEL EYE DROPS: contains euphrasia, (traditionally used for centuries to aid eye health), effective for dry, irritated tired eyes and suitable for contact lens users. • BILBERRY: this has the antioxidant vitamins A and C, helps to reduce the risk of cataracts. This herb has been known to improve the function of the retina, improving night vision. • VITAMIN A: a shortage of vitamin A may lead to poor vision, as this vitamin is essential in the formation of the retinal pigments responsible for vision and it has a protective effect on the eye surface. • EYE LOGIC SPRAY/DROPS: offers relief for dry eyes. Relieves symptoms of dry eyes, burning feeling, tiredness of the eye, gritty feeling and sensitivity to light and again this is suitable for contact lens users. The spray may be applied over make up to closed eyes. Some tips for keeping eyes healthy: If you are spending long periods of time in front of a screen ensure you position your computer so your eyes are level with top of the monitor, allowing you to look down at screen. Use anti glare screen if needed. Every 20mins rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours get up and have a 15min break. Always choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. It might sound obvious but wear sunglasses even if you use contact lens.

Go for regular eye tests!!

Until next time, stay healthy.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! TRUMPETS AND GUNS

In a small town, a man just opened a small store selling trumpets and guns. One day his neighbor pays him a visit and says, “So how is your strange business going?” “What do you mean strange?” “Because you sell only trumpets and guns!” “So?” “Well, let me put it this way, what do you sell the most, trumpets or guns?” “It evens itself out. Each time a customer buys a trumpet, one of his neighbors buys a gun.”

BOB IS PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE. A BAG OF DRUGS IS FOUND IN HIS POCKET

Cop: Sir, do you know it’s illegal to have drugs in your possession? Bob: I’m sorry officer, but it’s not my fault. I’ve tried numerous times to get rid of the drugs, but every time I flush them down the toilet, they always reappear in my pocket. Cop: Ha, very funny. (he proceeds to place Bob under arrest ) Bob: No, I’m serious! Let me show you and if I’m lying, you can arrest me on the spot. The cop gives in, and the two of them walk into a gas station bathroom. Bob flushes the drugs down the toilet. The cop then begins to search Bob’s pockets, finding nothing. Cop: What the hell?? I thought you said when you flush the drugs that they always reappear in your pocket? Bob: Drugs? What drugs?

AT AN ANNUAL CHECKUP...

An 82 year old man was having his annual checkup, and the doctor asked him how he was feeling. “I’ve never been better!” he boasted. “I’ve got a twenty three year old bride who’s pregnant, and having my child! What do you think about that?” The doctor considered this for a moment and then said, “Let me tell you a story. I knew a guy who was an avid hunter. He never missed a season. But one day, he went out in a bit of a hurry and accidentally grabbed his umbrella instead of his gun.” The doctor continued, “So he was in the woods, and suddenly a grizzly bear appeared in front of him! He raised up his umbrella, pointed it at the bear, and squeezed the handle.”

“And do you know what happened?” the doctor queried. Dumbfounded, the old man replied “No.” The doctor continued, “The bear dropped dead in front of him!” “That’s impossible!” exclaimed the old man. “Someone else must have shot that bear.” “Exactly...” replied the doctor.

ANGELA MERKEL VISITS DONALD TRUMP IN WASHINGTON

During her stay Trump asks her: “Tell me Chancellor Merkel, what’s the secret of your years of success?” Chancellor Merkel responds: “Well I have always surrounded myself with intelligent people.” “Very interesting”, says Trump, “but how exactly do you know if they are intelligent?” “Well I just ask them a couple of simple questions. By their response I can quickly determine whether someone is intelligent or not.” “Would you mind showing me how to do that?” Trump asks. Angela picks up the phone and calls Wolfgang Schäuble, her Minister of Finance and asks: “it’s the son of your father but it’s not your brother. Who is it?” The Minister replies: “That’s easy, it’s obviously me!” Totally impressed Trump returns to the oval office and calls up his Vicepresident Michael Pence. “Mike I have a question for you. It’s the son of your father but it’s not your brother. Who is it?” Micheal stalls for a moment, not knowing the answer. He tells Trump that he will sleep over it. In the morning he wakes up still without a solution. So he rings up Barack Obama and passes the riddle to him. Obama immediately respons: “Well that’s me!” Relieved Michael calls up Trump and exclaims: “I got the answer to your question...it’s Barack Obama!!!” After a moment of silence, Trump explodes: “No you idiot, it’s Wolfgang Schäuble!!!”

TORQUING CARS! MOTOR RACING LEGEND JOHN SURTEES DIES AGED 83

Motor racing legend John Surtees CBE has died aged 83. Surtees was was admitted to St Georges Hospital, London in February with an existing respiratory condition. After a short period in intensive care he passed away peacefully. His wife, Jane and daughters, Leonora and Edwina were by his side. A statement from the Surtees family said, ‘John was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was also one of the true greats of motorsport and continued to work tirelessly up until recently with The Henry Surtees Foundation and Buckmore Park Kart Circuit. ‘We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life. He has set a very real example of someone who kept pushing himself at his peak and one who continued fighting until the very end.’ Surtees won the 1964 Formula One world championship driving for Ferrari aged 30, but before that he was a hugely successful motorbike racer.

TYRE RACE FOR ‘SILENT ‘ ELECTRIC CARS

The race is quickening to cope with the ‘sound of silence’ in electric cars so buyers will not wonder where all the noise is coming from. As electric car model spans increase, they are going to highlight ever smaller amounts of road/tyre rumble, as well as previously unnoticed deficiencies in a car’s build (uneven gaps) that would generate wind noise. Andreas Puerschel, head of Hankook’s EU Development Team, told me of the challenge. Existing engines blot out a lot of road and wind sound because even the best of them are noisier than virtually-silent electric cars. Mr Puerschel has a large team developing tyres solely for electric cars (EVs). Like their rivals, his company has been dealing with tyres’ rolling resistance for years. Now the challenge is coping with quieter EVs. Such cars are lighter too but have all their torque from the get-go - so there are conflicting demands across the board. “Customers won’t want what they consider to be noisier cars,” he told Motors. With electric car numbers forecast to significantly increase, tyres comprise a key component in shaping the future. Hankook experts also say we need to reduce tyre width to reduce fuel consumption - but they still need current traction/grip levels. Latest tyres help cut 3/4pc fuel consumption a year, they reckon. But that can’t continue indefinitely, hence the need to make narrower tyres.

PEUGEOT 3008 WINS EURO TITLE

Peugeot’s new 3008 compact SUV has been crowned European Car of the Year 2017. The results were announced at the Geneva Motor Show last week and were voted on by a jury of 58 motoring journalists from 22 European countries. The 3008 pipped the Alfa Romeo Giulia, and pushed the Mercedes-Benz E-class into third place. The French SUV, with 319 points, beat six rivals: the Alfa Romeo Giulia (296 points), Mercedes-Benz E-class (197 points), Volvo S90/V90 (172 points), Citroen C3 (166 points), Toyota C-HR (165 points) and the Nissan Micra (135 points). It is the fifth Peugeot vehicle to win the award although German cars have dominated the award this decade. Opel Astra, Volkswagen Passat, Peugeot 308, Volkswagen Golf, Opel Ampera, Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen Polo have won the top prize since 2010. The seven finalists were whittled down from an initial long-list of 30 nominees. To be eligible, the cars must have been available for sale in at least five European countries within the previous 12-month period. The Peugeot 3008 has just gone on sale in Ireland and is designed to compete with the Nissan Qashqai, Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Kuga and Renault Kadjar.

ONE MISTAKE AND YOU’RE OUT

That’s the message being hammered home to young and inexperienced drivers in the UK as new rules on mobile phone use come into force today. The penalties are doubling. That means you get SIX points as well as a £200 fine if caught using your phone behind the wheel. That is enough to lose a licence for those who have had one for under two years. It means you’d have to apply and pay for a new provisional licence, pass theory and practical parts of your test all over again.

Again, fixtures are subject to change so keep an eye on our facebook page. If you have still to pay your membership please make sure you get in touch with any of your team mentors who will be able to assist you with same. Corn Uí Mhuirí: Tralee CBS came unstuck on Sat last when succumbing to a stronger St Brendan’s outfit in this year’s final

played in Austin Stack Park. Shane Foley, Tom Hoare and Aaron Roche all played their part. Strictly Come Dancing: There has been much talk and excitement since our launch last week with tickets selling very quickly for the event on 25th March. Admission is by ticket only so get yours in time and also look out for some promotions on the club’s Social Media pages. Club Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto jackpot of €6,300where the winning numbers were: 4, 20, 21 & 26. BALLYMAC NEWS: In the Senior Tralee Town League Ballymac went down to Kerins O’Rahillys 2-12 to 0-11 and despite the loss it was a good outing for the team against a County League Division 1 side. This Sunday it’s the first round of the County League with the seniors at home to Dromid Pearses at 2pm. The Minor’s went down away to Glenflesk 4-13 to 2-03 in the second round of the County League. Ballymac had to line out without seven regulars but still put up a good performance despite being behind from early on. Ballymac Ladies make history: History was made when the club fielded a senior ladies team for the first time. They lined out against Castlegregory/Annascaul in the County League Division 4 with their opponents being much the better in the early stages leading 2-05 to no score at half time. However the Ballymac Ladies were much better in the second half and almost got back on level terms in a game that they will take a lot of positives from. Theresa Keane and Emma Sweeney scored the historic goals. There was no winner from the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,14,15 and 19 and the next Jackpot is e7,000. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER near Mahon Point, several of our Tralee Parnells girls got to play 3 very useful games against divisional strength teams from among the Cork underage Camogie Interdivisional sides. Kerry v Offaly Sun 26 Mar: Tralee Parnells got approval for a collection outside Kerry v Offaly game on the 26th. This game should draw a big crowd, so Parnells volunteers are needed to help on the day. Please contact club mentors if you are available to help. We also hope to see our under 10’s play at half time of that game, so a good day to fly the flag for the club and for Hurling and Camogie development in Tralee. CAMOGIE NEWS: In the Littlewoods National Camogie League Division 3 game it finished Kerry 3.7 Roscommon 0 -08. The Kerry girls travelled to Tremaine Gaa grounds on Sunday last to face the Rossies, our girls got off to a good start playing with the breeze. Ann Marie Leen got the first score of the game which was a goal. It was a tough game and Roscommon were strong but the Kerry backs played very well. Liz Houlihan , Niamh Leen and Michelle Costello were they full back line and were excellent on the day. Sara Murphy centre back there was no getting past the girls. In the second half the girls came out even stronger playing against the wind. They now face Clare on Sunday next 19th March in Abbeydorney at 2pm. Please come out and support the girls. The Kerry Minor girls have recorded 4 wins on Saturday in the first of their 2 inter county blitzes in the All Ireland U18 Strike for Glory Championship. The games were played in Abbotstown in excellent conditions the 20 girls that travelled all played their part in a very successful day. Kerry beat Wicklow, Donegal, Monaghan and Mayo on the day. Round 2 will take place on March 26th. SCOR NA BPAISTI RESULTS FOR THE TRALEE AREA: The following have qualified for the County Final of Scor na bPaisiti from the Tralee area: Aithriseoireacht/Storytelling: Tralee Parnells (Ailisha Daughton), Bailéadghrúpa: Club Naomh Pádraig, Sketch/Léiriú: Club Naomh Pádraig, Figure Dance: Ballymac, Rince Sean-nóis and Tralee Parnells (Caoimhe Ní Laighin). The County Final’s will take place on Sunday March 26th with the quiz taking place on the same date with clubs still able to enter. DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR GARVEY’S: GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS have secured a big double whammy of wins this week, as the club has been awarded both the Men’s Super League Player of the Month and the Men’s Super League Coach of the Month titles for the month of February.

Head Coach Mark Bernsen has scooped the title of Coach of the Month for February after he helped his side to continue an unbeaten run of wins during the month, dating back to the start of December. Shooting star Trae Pemberton meanwhile has secured the title of Men’s Super League Player of the Month after he made a huge impression on games throughout the month top scoring throughout February, bagging 35 points against Pyrobel Killester and 37 against UCD Marian. WARRIORS WINNING STREAK ENDS GOING DOWN 96-93 TO TEMPLEOGUE: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors wonderful winning streak has come to an end with a narrow loss to Templeogue who were crowned Regular Season Champions following their win. In the end the Dublin side had a 3 point win in a game where both sides dug deep although Tralee coach Mark Bernsen said his side probably needed to control the tempo a bit better than they did. Warriors stormed into an early lead and were 14 up 31-17 going into the second quarter. As expected the Dublin side fought back but the visitors were still ahead 54-48 at the break. There was nothing in the game through the third and fourth quarters and the game came down to the last minute. Templeogue’s American Mike Bonaparte soared through the air to take a massive offensive rebound with 58 seconds on the clock and made the basket to give the home side a three point lead. Warriors were still not done and Trae Pemberton went to the free throw line and with 30 seconds to go there was only a point between them 94-93. But Bonaparte was to prove to be the match winner when he kept his nerve to land two free throws inside the last 20 seconds to secure the win 96-93 and with it the League title. While disappointed with the result Warriors coach Mark Bernsen was philosophical in defeat. “We had a good run and now it’s time to start another run. And there is no better to start that run than at home this Saturday night and take it into the play offs. There are things we need to improve on and we will address them this week”. Top scorers for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors were Trae Pemberton 24, Kieran Donaghy 21 and Dusan Bogdanovic 12. Eagles up next for Warriors Garvey’s face UL Eagles at the earlier time of 3pm this Saturday at the Complex. This is an important game as they are tied third with UCD Marian as the play-off approach with both sides tied on 48 points from their 21 games. UCD are away to SSE Airtricity Moycullen at 7pm the same evening. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: In the Lee Strand Boys u12

St Brendan’s were 23-8 up at half time and were never really threatened in the second period. In other games in the Ladies Division 2 it finished KCYMS 57-51 St Brendan’s while in the u14 Boys Division 2 Tralee Tigers defeated St Brendan’s 29-22 and in the Leestrand u16’s in Division 1 St Mary’s beat St Brendan’s 50-37, in Division 3 it was 38-28 to St Mary’s and in Division 2 in the u14’s Caherciveen won 45-18. CIRCUIT OF KERRY PRESS RELEASE: Kerry Motor Club will launch its Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally with a special function the landmark Tralee establishment on Monday night (March20) A counting round of the locally sponsored Top Part West Coast Rally championship, the April2 second event is expected to attract some of the best drivers in Ireland and further afield to compete on some the best rally roads in Ireland. Last year’s Circuit of Munster winner, Steve Wood, is also entered in his Subaru Impreza and will employ Abbeyfeale-based co-driver Keith Moriarty for the weekend. Moriarty is very much looking forward to his local stages. Additional big names are expected to commit after this weekend’s West Cork Rally in Clonakilty. Monday night’s event gets underway at 7pm when clerk of the course, Tralee man Richard Talbot, outlines some of the route details and reveals some of the star names that have entered the nine-stage, 120km rally. It is the longest possible mileage allowed under current Motorsport Ireland Friday 17th March 2017

rules for a one day rally, offering a great challenge to the driver and an incredible spectacle for the 1000s of fans expected in Tralee for the weekend. Richard Talbot said: “The Circuit of Kerry is one of the most important events on the Irish rally calendar. World rally star Paul Nagle cut his teeth on this rally and recorded one of his first national rally wins on this rally when it was based in Dingle. ”An extensive route survey has already taken place and residents in the proposed route have offered their all-important support to the rally. A total of nine stages, in a threeby-three format, using roads not used in The Kingdom for many years, and on stages made famous by the old-style Circuit of Ireland, ensures that competitors and fans can look forward to a long and challenging rally. Another plus point for the rally is that driver sign-on, the service park, and other event-related activities are all housed within the Rose Hotel’s complex, making it a very easy event to manage from both an organiser and competitor point-of-view.
