LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Eleanor a widow has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and it is expected within a few years that she may not be able to look after herself or her own affairs. Her family is concerned that they would be able to do their best to look after her, as she grows older, dependent and more vulnerable. What can her four children do? Eleanor presently has mental capacity so it is an ideal opportunity for her to finalise an enduring power of attorney. This is a document that is drawn up appointing attorneys to manage her affairs should she ever mentally incapable. It sets out who is in charge and what they are to do-control over finances and personal care/welfare. It gives power to attorneys to decide: • • • • • • •
where and with whom the Donor should live whom the Donor should see and not see what training and rehabilitation the Donor should get donor’s diet and dress inspection of Donor’s personal papers housing, social welfare and other benefits Healthcare outside of life ending decisions.
The EPA needs to be signed by Eleanor, her Doctor, a solicitor and her attorneys and notice parties are notified it exists. The document lies in a drawer and has no effect until Eleanor becomes mentally incapable and then it will be registered with the Decision Support Service and the attorneys will do annual reports showing they are looking after Eleanor properly. The big advantage of the EPA is that Eleanor sets out her choices, will and preferences in advance before she becomes no longer able to do so. These documents are usually done up with a solicitor and can save a lot of heartache and bother later on. Next of kin are able to act on behalf of Eleanor’s benefit with a status conferred by the EPA, which they would not otherwise have had. Without some legal authority next of kin have no legal status to act on Eleanor’s behalf.
If you have any queries on this topic or any other then please contact Miriam McGillycuddy Solicitors, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, Co. Kerry Phone: 0667181596 or mobile 0872604753 or email at miriam.mcgillycuddy@gmail.com
Medical Matters WHAT ARE FACIAL FILLERS? Facial fillers (also known as dermal fillers) are products that are injected under the skin to add volume to different areas of the face such as over the cheekbones, around the mouth, around the eyes or to plump up the lips. The results are subtle and long lasting. Dr Buckley uses the Juvéderm® range of hyaluronic acid fillers which is the best-selling hyaluronic acid filler in the United States. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance that delivers nutrients to the skin. Fillers help the skin retain moisture to soften lines and add volume. All our fillers contain local anaesthetic to help minimise discomfort during treatment. The Juvéderm® range of fillers lasts on average for one to two years depending on the area injected. Unlike Botox®, facial fillers will help with static wrinkles that are present when you are not forming facial expressions (i.e. when your face is at rest). The Juvéderm® range of fillers is a long-lasting solution to your face’s ageing process. It will help restore some of the volume that you lose on your face as you age. Fillers can also be used to create a ‘’lifting’’ effect, especially when injected around the cheekbones, in the cheek area just in front of the ears and around the mouth.
Fillers are excellent for smoothing out lines on your upper lip which are common in smokers and ex-smokers. Dr Buckley, who is Allergan trained and has been injecting fillers for almost fifteen years, administers fillers by needles or cannulas (a soft plastic needle) to enhance safety and comfort. The volumizing and lifting effects of the fillers should be most apparent after one or two weeks and gives a natural look that is significant but not overly obvious when the injections are given by an experienced injector. For more information including prices see: www.solasdermatology.ie/fillers or phone The Ashe Street Clinic for a free appointment to discuss facial fillers and see if it for you.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Becoming a Rose Escort is a “no-brainer, bucket-list item” says Thomas APRIL is approaching and with it is the deadline for men from Munster to apply to be Rose Escorts at the 2018 Rose of Tralee International Festival which will take place in Kerry from 17th to 21st August. Time is running out for gentlemen aged 21 to 30 to put their names forward online at www.roseoftralee.ie/apply for a chance to enjoy what has been described by many who have gone before them as “the best experience of their lives”. Last year saw 17 men from Munster – Cork (5), Limerick (5), Kerry (4), Waterford (2) and Clare (1) - make it through the selection process to fulfil their ambitions to be Rose Escorts at the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The primary role of a Rose Escort is to look after his Rose and ensure her time at the Festival is a memorable and enjoyable experience. The 2017 Rose Escort of the Year, Thomas Lynch from Castleisland, Co Kerry, said: “Why should someone apply? Because it’s such a once in a lifetime, bucket list item!! You meet so many people through the Festival, that the benefit of getting involved isn’t the weeklong festival, it’s the year after, and from what I can see from previous Rose Escorts, it’s the years after that too.
Interviews for candidates who have applied to be Rose Escorts will take place at the Glen Royal Hotel and Leisure Club in Maynooth in April, while the successful candidates will take part in a team-building Boot Camp in June at some of Kerry’s most stunning locations. The Rose Escorts will then participate in a range of Festival events in August including the Gala Rose Ball, three Parades and a week packed full of entertainment. In order to be eligible to be a Rose Escort at the Rose of Tralee International Festival applicants must: Be male, 21 years of age by 1st January 2018 and not have reached your 31st birthday on or prior to 1st September 2018 Be unmarried or never been married Be born in Ireland or of Irish origin by virtue of one of your ancestors having been born in Ireland Be available for Selection events and if selected be available for the International Festival events from 15th to 21st August 2018 in Tralee The 2017 Rose Escort of the Year, Thomas Lynch from Castleisland, Co Kerry, said: “Being from Kerry, I was always a huge fan of the Festival. I grew up watching
the parades, going to the Town Park and enjoying the selections on TV, so when a friend of mine suggested I sign up to be Rose Escort, it was really a no-brainer. It’s such a fantastic week with so much packed in it’s hard to choose highlights. There are three key moments that stick out: 1) Seeing my Rose’s awe at the huge crowd at the Saturday parade; 2) Sitting on the float with Jenny at the Midnight Madness Parade; and 3) Seeing how happy my mother was when I was announced as the Rose Escort of the Year.” Thomas has just returned from New York where he took part in the St Patrick’s Day Parade with a number of Roses and
fellow Rose Escorts having previously spent a week in Belarus as a volunteer with Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children International. Each candidate will be charged an application fee and should he be chosen as a Rose Escort, he will be required to obtain sponsorship of €1500. Lads who are man enough to apply for the job of a lifetime as a Rose of Tralee Escort can do so online www.roseoftralee. ie/apply before the end of March or email admin@ roseoftralee.ie for more information.

Cllr Cahill disappointed with Killorglin Astellas road delay Councillor Michael Cahill has been informed that TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE IRELAND has allocated €161,000 for the laying of the 660M of 160MM uPVC water main to replace the two existing old water pipes on the N70 road between the Laune Bridge and Astellis factory, Killorglin. It is intended that the work will be commenced by the Council’s Water Services crews in mid May and will be completed in 6 weeks, prior to the planned road upgrade works. Councillor Cahill said while the funding for the replacement of the old cast iron pipes is very welcome, it does have a downside. The Fianna Fail Councillor said that this means that the long awaited improvement works to the Killorglin to Astellas Road will not now commence until September. Councillor Cahill said the Public have been waiting patiently for this work to commence for a long time now and they like himself will be very disappointed that there has been a further delay.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Story Box
Evelyn Dore and Karen Walsh, both primary teachers, have been tirelessly working on these past few months in there spare time and it has been a major success. In researching the health and well-being of senior citizens in our community they felt there was a major need for local memories to be compiled because, in there experience of volunteering in convalescent homes, nostalgia is the biggest joy you can bring! They set out to gather as much local historical memories from Tralee and the project grew from strength to strength! The eight nostalgia story boxes are in the ownership of Active Retirement Ireland but are being distributed to all who want them throughout the town.
Inside these boxes are all five senses to bring joy to these senior citizens. These include archived photographs, old Tralee show bands, books, historical storytelling CD’s, very old Tralee footage and many more historical Tralee based artifacts. Also in the boxes are sensory smell jars (apparently smell is the biggest trigger to bring back memory in reminiscence therapy), which include old perfumes, the incense of the church, snuff, carbolic soap, the sea and much more. As a sensory touch, local volunteers have made fidget blankets which are brilliant for people battling dementia and Alzheimer’s. There hope would be that in airing this story, other volunteers may emulate the project in their town, bringing further joy to many more people!
ABOVE: Attending the reception at Fatima Nursing Home, Tralee, on Saturday, at the opening of “Down Memory Lane Story Boxes” supplied by Primary school teachers Evelyn Dore Primary school, Moyderwell and Karen Walsh, CBS Primary Clounalour, to Nursing Homes in Tralee , The Boxes contain Books, Tapes, ect, ect, for the patients to read and return to the box for another patient to avail of the Books and Tapes.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... 300 outdoor billboard ads highlighting Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way across Britain Some 300 eye-catching billboard ads are highlighting the Wild Atlantic Way in
key roadside and city centre locations across Britain right now. The ads feature strong and iconic images of various locations along the Wild Atlantic Way and the key message is the quick and easy access from Britain to those spectacular locations in under two hours. It’s all part of Tourism Ireland’s “Wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way” campaign which is under way in cities in Britain with direct flights to the West of Ireland – including London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin visited London today (Tuesday, 27 March), where he met with the Tourism Ireland team to view the impact of the billboard ads. He was fully briefed on the organisation’s promotional programme for 2018, including this new €1.35 million Wild Atlantic Way campaign. The campaign will reach at least 10 million potential holidaymakers around Britain. As well as the outdoor ads, the campaign includes co-operative ads with Ryanair – highlighting good value fares on London buses and online. It also includes a promotion on Classic FM with popular British journalist and presenter Bill Turnbull which will reach around six million listeners; a joint promotion with TripAdvisor; as well as social media promotions and email marketing.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! This week I’m doing a ‘Blogging Tips 101’ for any of you thinking about starting your own blog or these points can be applied to starting your own YouTube channel/Instagram page too!
1.
BLOG HONESTLY When you blog, always ensure that the subject/topic of the blogpost is in your own opinion & voice. It’s easy to spot when someone is not giving their honest thoughts and opinions on something. Your blog will be a lot more popular if you are honest in things that you blog about. Remember, your thoughts and opinions are your own and they cannot be mimicked, this will make your blog authentic and easier for people to connect with!
2.
ONLY BLOG WHEN YOU’RE INSPIRED. If a blogpost is forced it just won’t end well. It won’t be your best quality or enjoyable. There are times that I sit down with the intentions of blogging but for some reason I simply can’t get inspired. When that happens I just don’t blog. There is absolutely no point in writing a half-arsed blog post for the sake of putting something up! Wait until you get inspiration or an idea and let your thoughts flow.
3.
POST REGULARLY I know I said above only to blog when you’re inspired and I stick to that. But if you only post every now and again and leave huge spaces between your post you won’t gain a strong readership. If people don’t think you’re consistent, they are less likely to revisit your blog often. When you’re inspired to blog, write a few blog posts that you can post a day where you’re not up to blogging. We all have those days!
4.
USE WORDPRESS/BLOGSPOT WHEN GETTING STARTED I was lucky that I did a computer course and knew how to go about starting my blog when I wanted to, it really made things easier. If you’re a newbie I recommend either of those sites to get started. They are user friendly and I have used both. I currently use Blogspot and I design my own blog. It takes a bit o getting used to but that’s all the fun of it.
5.
MAKE YOUR BLOG YOUR OWN, BE YOURSELF! I cannot stress enough how important this is. You want your blog to be original and not a copy of any other blog. If you copy posts from another blog it’s not your own and it’s not any bit original. There are thousands of blogs out there so you have to make your blog your own and original. That will make others want to follow and keep up with your blog. Otherwise you’ll be just another blogger and won’t stand out from the crowd. Remember, blog because you want to, blog because you’re inspired, don’t blog for fame or recognition, your posts won’t come across genuine and you won’t succeed in a strong readership!
Rebecca

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK!
Going on from talking about fad diets and all that last week… This week I’m going to be talking all about why low carb diets don’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried them all and the only thing they do is destroy your metabolism. As a weight loss strategy, cutting carbs (while reducing the total number of calories) clearly works pretty well for some people. If it didn’t, then Atkins would have never been popular in the first place. When you cut carbs you initially drop water weight, not fat. So therefore if you cut carbs for 4 weeks for your holiday, you drop weight, mostly water weight. Then the second you start eating carbs again your body will retain more water than before and you will look bloated for your entire holiday, who wants that? No one! Here’s the thing, though: Carb reduction costs us. You see, most of us require some level of carbohydrates to function at our best over the long term.
But if you like to exercise regularly and enthusiastically, restricting your carb intake can lead to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Decreased thyroid output Increased cortisol output Decreased testosterone Impaired mood and cognitive function Muscle loss
In other words: Your metabolism might slow, your stress hormones go up and your muscle-building hormones go down. Women with too-low carb intakes — especially active women — can face: a stopped or irregular menstrual cycle; lowered fertility; more body fat (especially around the middle); chronic fatigue and disrupted sleep;
saying to eat just carbs and only carbs every day, but I am saying that from experience, lots of women are afraid of carbs and think that they’re bad. What you really need to look at is how much salt and sugar are in your foods. I have said it before and I will say it again… INVEST IN A GOOD PERSONAL TRAINER. It will honestly change your life, and your perception of carbs.
Rebecca
Everything should be in balance. I’m not
Keeping carbs too low for too long can have disastrous consequences. This is especially true for those of us who work out. If you’re sedentary, your carb needs are lower. So you might be able to get away with more restriction.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A TAXI PASSENGER TAPPED THE DRIVER ON THE SHOULDER TO ASK HIM A QUESTION.
The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped centimeters from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said, “Look mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!” The passenger apologized and said, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much.” The driver replied, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver – I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.”
TWO GUYS ARE WALKING IN THE RAIN
A speeding car splashes them with water before disappearing. One guy says to the other, “You know if this was Paris, they would stop, take you to their house, take your wet clothes, offer you drinks, and let you spend the night.” “No way!” says the other guy. “Yes way,” says the first guy. “It happened to my wife.”
A MAN AMD HIS WIFE WALK INTO A STORE AND THE WIFE STEALS A JAR OF PEACHES
Loss prevention catches her however, and pulls them aside to wait for a police officer to show up. Upon arrival, he is told what happened and handed the jar. He then counts how many slices of peach there are, for she is to spend a week in jail for each one. In this case 6. The officer then pulls out the paper on which to write up the report, but just as he begins to fill it out, the husband exclaims, “Wait! She stole a can of peas too!”

The penguins’ driver explains that he is taking the penguins to the zoo and asks if the other man would take the penguins there. He agrees. Some hours later, the 2nd lorry driver drives past the first one, who is still waiting on the motorway. The penguins are still on the lorry, and look happy. “I thought I asked you to take those penguins to the zoo,” shouted the first driver. The second replied, “I did, but I had some money left, so we’re going to the cinema now
4 FRIENDS.
These four friends were so confident that the weekend before final exams, they decided to go up to Dallas and party with some friends up there. They had a great time. However, after all the partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Austin until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final and explain to him why they missed it. They explained that they had gone to Dallas for the weekend with the plan to come back and study but, unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn’t have a spare, and couldn’t get help for a long time. As a result, they missed the final. The Professor thought it over and then agreed they could make up the final the following day. The guys were elated and relieved. They studied that night and went in the next day at the time the professor had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, worth 5 points. It was something simple about free radical formation. “Cool,” they thought at the same time, each one in his separate room. “This is going to be easy.” Each finished the problem and then turned the page. On the second page was written: (For 95 points): Which tire?

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Girly Afternoon for great cause Are you looking for an excuse to go somewhere with the girls for an afternoon? Well look no further!! On Sunday 8th April, Chernobyl Children’s Fund Tralee and District Ltd. is holding a Masterclass with the very talented Make-Up Artist, Leah Clail. This event will be held in The Arms Hotel, Listowel from 4.30pm - 6.30pm. Tickets are only €15 and all proceeds will be donated to this Charity. You won’t be going home with your hands hanging either as your ticket will include a fantastic goodie bag!
“This charity is run entirely by local unpaid volunteers dedicated to helping children, families and communities most affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. It is funded entirely by voluntary fundraising and contributions, and in common with many other charities, it is getting more difficult every year to raise funds. Our main item of expense is the cost of the children’s airfares to Ireland in the Summer for 1 month. Since 1993 we have
been bringing children from the village of Kozhan in a contaminated area in Southern Belarus to North Kerry for 4 weeks in June/July each year for rest and recuperation, medical attention, etc” says Sally-Ann Leahy. To date, our organization has brought over 1,000 children to Kerry. Visiting children are placed in pairs and maintained at the expense of each host family. Taking a child out of a contaminated area even for a few weeks helps boost their immune system and generally instills a sense of positivity which can be lacking in many of their lives. We also provide support to the local school, hospital in the area, and children/adults with special needs; as well as direct support to families living in the village of Kozhan who don’t have the basic requirements for survival. Winters are harsh with temperatures often as low as minus 30°C.
‘We would like to sincerely thank our many sponsors who have made this event possible. We have a fabulous spot prize worth €150, which was kindly sponsored by Sam McCauley’s, Tralee along with many other wonderful spot prizes to be won on the night. A big thank you also to the Listowel Arms Hotel who are helping us host the event. Tickets are selling fast with over 150 sold already, and we hope it will be a sell-out event’, says Aisling O Hanlon.
Tickets can be purchased via messaging our Facebook Page ‘Chernobyl Children’s Fund Tralee and District Ltd.’ or by dropping into The Arms Hotel, Listowel. You can also message Leah Clail directly on Instagram or Facebook. Finally, we are always looking for new host families and if you would like to find out more information please contact Bridie on 0879013784.
Snow Patrol Tickets On Sale Tomorrow Tickets for all tour dates go on sale at 10am on Friday 30th March via Ticketmaster outlets and www.inec.ie Over a two-decade career, Snow Patrol has carved out a unique place for themselves. Since their 1998 debut, Songs for Polarbears, which Pitchfork hailed as “an impressive piece of work,” their melancholy anthems of heartbreak and separation have mended hearts, and the band has racked up an impressive number of critical and commercial accolades, including 15 million global album sales, 1+ billion global track streams, 5 UK Platinum Albums, and are Grammy, BRIT Award and Mercury Music Prize nominated. Eyes Open, released in 2006, was the biggest-selling album in the UK that year; they went on to headline such festivals as the prestigious T in the Park. But after their Fallen Empires tour ended in 2012, band members — guitarist, vocalist Gary Lightbody, 28

guitarists Johnny McDaid and Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, and drummer Jonny Quinn — decided to stop for a while. “I do think the rest of the band would have been ready to record at any point over the last five years. But they never showed frustration or anger. Never did they say, ‘Hurry up and write the songs, mate.’” In the interim, Quinn started a family and dove into his Polar Patrol Publishing, signing Belle and Sebastian in 2014. Connolly formed and fronted Little Matador, the band he started with a number of other prominent Irish and American musicians, including Dave Magee from Lafaro and Gavin Fox from Idlewild. Wilson signed on as the touring guitarist in Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel’s band Lieutenant, and produced a number of bands, including L.A. newcomers Broken Arrow. McDaid wrote songs and produced such diverse artists as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran Friday 30th March 2018
and Pink, and executiveproduced Kodaline’s third album, due out this year. Lightbody put the finishing touches on The Ghost of the Mountain, the second album by his Tired Pony side project with members of Belle and Sebastian, R.E.M, Reindeer Section and Fresh Young Fellows. He then moved to Los Angeles and began writing songs for movies (including “This Is How You Walk On” for 2017’s Gifted), and doing
a number of high-profile cowrites with Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and One Direction. Songs that weren’t pulled from his own psyche were less painful to craft, and went a long way into healing what he considered to be writer’s block. Which is what he did for Snow Patrol’s seventh album. Titled Wildness, it taps into something raw and primitive.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PARENTAL LEAVE Question What is parental leave? Can both parents take it? Answer Each parent of an eligible child may take up to 18 weeks of unpaid parental leave from work. Leave can be taken no later than the child’s eighth birthday. However, if your child has a disability or a long-term illness, you can take parental leave up to their 16th birthday. If you adopt a child between the ages of six and eight, you can take leave for that child up to two years after the date of the adoption order. (Your contract of employment may also provide for an extended age limit.) You can take 18 weeks of leave per child in one continuous period or in two separate blocks of a minimum of six weeks. Taking parental leave does not affect your other employment rights. Apart from the loss of pay and pension contributions, your position remains as if no parental leave had been taken. This means, for example, that while on parental leave you will continue to accumulate your annual leave entitlement. While you are on parental leave, a public holiday that falls on a day when you would normally be working is added to your period of leave. When you return to work after taking parental leave, you can ask for a change in your work pattern or working hours for a set period. Your employer must consider your request, but is not obliged to grant it. Both parents have an equal entitlement to 18 weeks’ parental leave each. Unless you and your partner work for the same employer, this leave is non-transferable; you can only claim your own parental leave entitlement of up to 18 weeks per child. However, if you both work for the same employer and your employer agrees, you may transfer up to 14 weeks of your parental leave entitlement to each other.

TORQUING CARS! JAGUAR UNLEASHES 176MPH F-PACE SVRJAGUAR
has launched the F-Pace SVR at the New York Motor Show 2018. The 176mph SUV is powered by the same 5.0-litre V8 engine as the F-Type SVR and will start from £74,835 when it reaches showrooms in the summer.Jaguar is billing the F-Pace SVR as the fastest and most powerful SUV it has ever put into production. And on paper, at least, it’s hard to argue with that bold claim, with the 5.0 V8 supercharged petrol engine producing a colossal 550PS.Capable of covering 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds, the F-Pace SVR is marginally quicker than the Porsche Macan Turbo (with the Performance Pack) and capable of thundering to a top speed of 176mph. Aerodynamic enhancements include larger air intakes, spoilers and bumpers that incorporate side strakes to smooth airflow around the vehicle.Inside the SVR treatment adds slimline sports seats in the front and rear, with ‘signature lozenge quilting’ and a generous scattering of SVR logos that should give your passengers something to cling on to as you demonstrate the F-Pace’s supercar-rivalling acceleration and corning. For all its performance, the F-Pace should keep a certain level of its practicality. The boot, for example, remains at 650-litres. There will also be enough head and legroom for four adults to travel in spacious comfort. All SVR models get Jaguar’s latest Touch Pro infotainment system with a 10-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch HD instrument cluster, that can be customised to provide track lap time, engine data and four-wheel drive performance. Priced from £74,835, IN THE UK the F-Pace SVR is available to order now. The supercharged SUV should reach showrooms in July. AND iRELAND later in the Autumn .
EX-JOHN SURTEES BMW 507 COULD MAKE £2.2M
A 1957 BMW 507 Roadster that used to belong to racing legend John Surtees is going under the hammer. The car, which was owned by the only man to win titles on both two and four wheels, is going under the hammer at Goodwood Festival of Speed on 13 July. Auctioneers Bonhams reckon it could fetch up to £2.2m. Finished in silver grey, Surtees kept the car until he died in March 2017. He used the grand tourer extensively, often driving over the Brenner and Simplon passes on his way between Italy and England.Early on in his ownership, he contacted BMW to say it wasn’t as good as the first one he’d tried. Surtees said it ran out of breath going uphill and went downhill far too fast. BMW tweaked his V8 engine, boosting power and torque. Then invited him to carry out brake testing in Birmingham with Dunlop, which then fitted his car with four-wheel disc brakes. When he signed for Ferrari in late 1962, Surtees arrived at the Maranello factory in the BMW – at which point Enzo Ferrari decided the BMW was unacceptable and declared the driver must have a Ferrari. Surtees said, ‘When I got my first pay cheque, I found ‘The Old Man’ had had the price of a new Ferrari deducted from my fee! This lot is, then, the John Surtees BMW 507 – a one-owner car offered at the first time at publication auction, direct from the estate of the eight-time world champion.
AUTONOMOUS SNOW PLOUGHS CLEAR THE WAY FOR RELIABLE WINTER AIR TRAVEL
Driverless snow ploughs have been successfully tested on an airport runway for the first time, potentially heralding a new era in autonomous snow clearing. The machines were developed by Yeti Snow Technology, an outfit co-owned by Swedish product development firm Semcon and Norwegian equipment manufacturer Overaasen. The result is the first driverless snowploughs which, at 20 metres long and 5.5 metres wide, are able to clear an area of 357,000 square meters every hour. The test took place at Fagernes Airport in Leirin, Norway, 200 kilometres north of Oslo. While the British Isles and parts of Europe have been badly affected by the ‘Beast from the East’ storm, Scandinavia has always had a healthier relationship with snow. But even in countries like Norway and Sweden, where heavy snowfall is anticipated, there are problems with staffing and accurate weather predictions. Runways must be completely clear of snow for aircraft to operate, which necessitates having drivers on permanent standby – inevitably there are delays when the tarmac can’t be prepared in time for scheduled movements. “This is a good example of how autonomous vehicles can increased profitability and add value for people,” said Semcon CEO Markus Granlund.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CHAMPIONS TROPHY STAYS IN THE WARRIORS CABINET: To win a national trophy is a great achievement but to retain it is an even better one. And that’s what Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have done by winning the Basketball Ireland Champions Trophy for the second year in a row. The Warriors have been a huge addition to the sporting life of Tralee over the last few years and the whole organisation deserves this success. After a very strong SuperLeague campaign that the Warriors were in contention for until right up to the end they could have been forgiven for taking their foot off the gas for this end of season tournament. But as both Kieran Donaghy and coach Mark Bernsen said this was a tournament with the best teams of the year taking part and they were never going to let go of the trophy they won last year without a fight. And even a snow affected delay did not put them off. Firstly they defeated Griffith College Swords 78-71 in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. Next up in the last 4 they were closer to home and took a huge crowd of fans to the UL Arena where they saw off the recently crowned SuperLeague champions UCD Marian 82-78. WINNING THE CUP: Standing in their way were Black Amber Templeogue who they had beaten in a thriller 12 months ago. But this time Garvey’s were more comfortable in victory even if their opposition fought to the end. In the end Garveys Tralee Warriors has 12 points to spare in a 73-61 win where all the big players for Tralee – Pemberton, Pantovic, Donaghy and Dick as well as the whole squad- put in a very impressive performance. Their opposition were six ahead but a Pemberton three on the buzzer closed the gap to 14-17 at the end of the first quarter. Both sides went for it in the second quarter with Bogdanovic and Pa McCarthy making big scores and two big three from Dick left the Warriors ahead by 4 at the break 36-32. The Kerry side put in another good ten minutes in the third and the gap was 9 points Into the fourth quarter and after

Pemberton fired in his fifth three pointer on the night he was called for a foul, even though it looked like the foul was not committed by him. His gesture of disbelief was seen by the referees as dissent and he was given a technical and was fouled out. While a lesser side could have stumbled Tralee picked up their game and another big three by Dick, who was named as the MVP, got the Tralee fans lifting the roof as they knew victory was in their grasp. Fittingly it was Donaghy, who has been superb on and off the court for Warriors all season that hit the last score of the game and the season and the Champions Trophy was coming home with the Warriors. Captain Darren O’Sullivan accepted the trophy from Basketball Ireland President Teresa Walsh. For the Warriors Paul Dick was the top scorer on 22 points followed by Permberton on 21, and Pantovic on 14. Gravey’s Tralee Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell summed up the season by saying that, “For the Warriors it has been a tremendous second season for the club as with back-to-back Champions Trophy titles and they were prime contenders for the League title right down the stretch before succumbing to Black Amber Templeogue in the secon last game of the regular season at the Oblate Hall after overtime. The departure of Goran Pantovic who finished the year in outstanding form will be balanced out by the arrival of the hugely impressive Paul Dick. And some of the nights at the Tralee Sports Complex this season will also live long in the memory. Only 173 sleeps till the Complex is rocking again.” MAYOR OF TRALEE LOOKS FORWARD TO CIRCUIT OF KERRY RALLY: The 2018 Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry looks to be one of the best rallies in years with 120 crews expected to take part in the April 8th event. The rally was launched at the headquarters of Top Part Motor Factors in Tralee and at the Rose Hotel, the headquarters of the event. Top Part are the sponsors of one of the championships that the Circuit is a counting round of and the business
Friday 30th March 2018
celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and has been the title sponsor of the West Coast Championship since its inception in 1993. The rally is a welcome early season boost to Tralee and the surrounding areas with spectators expected to travel from all corners of the country to see the action. This did not go unnoticed by the Town Mayor Norma Foley who spoke at the launch where she said “On behalf of the people of Tralee, how very pleased we are that Tralee is chosen as the host town of this event, the spin-off for the town is exceptional in terms of business for local shops, hotel and we very grateful for that“ Clerk of the course Richard Talbot confirmed over 100 crews had entered the rally with entries coming from all corners of Ireland and a far afield as Scotland, England and Wales. Mr Talbot said: “I am delighted we have 120 cars and offer my thanks to the organising team who have worked tirelessly to get his rally off the ground.” The Circuit of Kerry is unique in that the rally will be run over 11 classic stages using many roads on the nationally publicised Wild Atlantic Way, and on some roads that have not seen rally action for over 20 years. It is the only rally in Ireland that offers as many tests in a one-day format. A detailed route map will be published in the full-colour official programme which will be on sale in Tralee and surrounding areas a few days after the Easter break. The Circuit will also be the first counting round of the inaugural Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship open to members of Kerry and Killarney and District Motor Club. This is a great initiative for Kerry crews and is expected to be hotly contested. SCORCHING WEEKEND AT THE DOGS: This Friday night is certainly going to be a good night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with the second rounds of the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling Memorial and the semi-finals of the St Michael’s College A7 525 yards buster race. The night is also a fundraiser for
the Killarney Scorchers Dance Club with an all sponsored programme and fantastic raffle prizes, all to range funds for their trip to the World Championships in Florida in May. Saturday afteroon’s SIS 8 race programme gets underway at 2.12 with racing on Saturday night including the first round heats of the William Costello construction coursing bred stakes over 325 yards plus two KGOBA sponsored finals. Entries, to the racing office on 061 448057, are now been accepted for the Lee Strand 550yds A3 confined class to commence on Apr 20th. TRALEE RIDERS HEAD INTO RAS MUMHAN IN GREAT FORM: One of the biggest cycle races in the country takes to the roads of Kerry this week. The Kerry Group Ras Mumhan will see 200 riders tackle four stages from Good Friday to Easter Sunday with a number of overseas teams going up against the best of the Irish riders. From a Tralee point of view two of its top riders are going into the race in great form. Sean Lacey took third in the first round of the National Road Series, a series he has won on a number of occasions, which took place in Carlow in the Des Hanlon Memorial Road Race. Also in that race Tarbert’s Michelle Geoghegan (Autocars) took third in the Women’s race. The next round of the National Road Series will be hosted by Blarney Cycling Club at the Donal Crowley Memorial Road Race on Sunday April 15th. Back to the Kerry Group Ras Mumhan and Lacey, winner of the Bobby Power Memorial on St Patrick’s Day, will be with the new Viner Caremark Pactimo team. Cathal Moynihan will lead the Tralee Manor West team in the Ras fresh from winning the Darragh McCarthy Solicitors Cup in Newcastlewest at the weekend. The team will also have Cormac Daly, Cian Smailes, Ciaran Slattery and David O’Sullivan in the Ras. Representing Kerry will also be teams from the Killarney CC, Sliabh Luachra CC and the Killarney Park team. NOT TOO MANY NORTHERN DELIGHTS: Three Kerry GAA sides made the long trip North last weekend with varying results. The big winners were the Camogie team. They travelled to Healy Park in Omagh and extended their unbeaten run in Division 3 of the Littlewoods Ireland National Camogie League. Camogie team Wins: It was a big day for the girls as the game was a curtain raiser to men’s game and it was great to see the travelling Kerry fans coming in early to cheer on the camogie players. Kerry were in control from early on led their Tyrone hosts 4-06 to 1-04 at the break. The home side did make an effort to close the gap but Kerry were scoring at will and in the end took the win on a 4-11 to 2-05

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER score line. Jackie Horgan hit two of the goals with the other coming from Rachel McCarthy and Alanna Whelan. Kerry manager Stephen Goggin said that he was very pleased with the performance. “It was a good performance but it’s important in all our games to play for the full 60 minutes. However the margin of the victory and the spread of scores bodes very well for the future”. Kerry now plays Roscommon in Abbeydorney this Sunday and if they win they will face Tyrone again while if the visitors win it will be Kerry and Clare in the League semi-finals. Kerry lose insignificant game: From a Kerry GAA point of view the loss to Tyrone was like the rest of the League, some good and some not so good parts. The only thing at stake was pride and what could be learned for the up- coming championship. Kerry’s League Division 1 status was retained and some of the newer players got some good match time on the field. Thoughts now turn to the Championship and many Kerry followers are wondering what system the team will use. It is quite possible that the management are working on this behind ‘closed doors’. Time will tell! What has gone wrong in the Ladies game in Kerry: First we had the debacle with the Kerry Ladies GAA not being able to form an executive, then they did but soon lost a number of member due to the debacle over the Minor manager. Now we have the senior ladies team hammered in Donegal and then the three points they did win against Mayo have been taken off them due to the fact that they player 3 ineligible players that had not been officially signed. Kerry have once chance against Monaghan to retain their League standing and while no one can ever question the commitment of any lady the pulls on a Kerry jersey something is not right and needs to be sorted out as soon as possible. Things must be gotten right in the committee room and on the field. Maybe relegation, however painful in the short term, might not be a bad thing as it would allow for re-building on the field. Re-building a strong committee might be a harder task. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,7, 12 and 15 with the next jackpot in O’Dwyers being e6800. The Juvenile Academy were delighted to be outdoors and in the u6’s Killian Enright was the player of the week. Lainey Costello was the u8’s player of the week. Each of the u8’s got a First Touch football. They will play in the Kerry GAA Blitz on Wednesday April 4th from 2 to 5pm.The Academy will train on Good Friday but there will be no training on Sunday. This will include the u10’s. The u12’s will
also train on Good Friday with the u14 Girls on Monday at noon. The u12’s were depleted when they lost to Churchill. The Minors lost out to Annascaul / Lispole and will play on Friday against Beaufort at 5pm. The Seniors shared the points with Brosna in Round 2 of the Senior Football League Round 2. They play St Michaels Foilmore in the Junior Premiership this Saturday at 5.30pm. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The club is delighted that is member Jordan Kissane won gold in the 200m race at the National Athletic Championships, running for the Tralee Harriers club. Members are reminded that membership for juvenile players is now due. The closing date is March 31st. The u6’s, u8’s, u10’s and other ages train at their usual times this week and for further information contact your coach. There might even be a few Easter Eggs at the ground this weekend. Many of the age groups have games coming up and the managers will have all the details. The club thanked is representatives Aoife Trant and Abi nic Conmara who put in very good performances at Scor na bPaisti. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors have made it two wins from two in the League defeating St Mary’s at Strand Road. This weekend they have the first game of 3 in the newly revised Club Championship with Austin Stacks first up at 6.45 in Austin Stacks Park. The Division 5 game was postponed following the tragic car crash on Saturday night and all at the club extend their sympathies to the family involved. In the Junior Blues the players of the week were Carla Lynch, Daire Hanlon, Mia Molloy, Luca Fusco and Kyle Smith. Training continues this week at the regular times. The Canal Walk for the Juvenile and Ladies club takes place this Monday leaving Strand Road at 1pm. This will be followed by an Easter Party in the club with a puppet show at 2pm as well as lots more fun and games. This is open to all members of the community. The 12’s County League will begin shortly with the u14’s are in the Town League final with the County League for the A’s and B’s starting. Registration is now due all no player is covered by insurance if they are not registered. Registration is on Sunday in Ballyrickard from 10.30 to 11.30am or can be given coaches. The Girls and the Ladies seasons are getting underway and all the teams are working hard and details of training times and match times are available from the club. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2,11,21 and 24 with the next jackpot being e3,300. SWIMMERS FINISH FOR THE WINTER: The Tralee Bay Winter Swimming

series came to an end last Sunday with over 30 swimmers in the water on what was probably the best day of the winter so far. The Winter Swimmer of the Year Helena Creagh, who did not miss one of the 26 Sunday’s and also completed the 12 swims of Christmas drew the winning ticket in the Easter Raffle. Frank Ryan was the lucky winner. The club was delighted for Elaine Burrows Dillane who was the runner up in the Munster Open Water Swimmer of the Year and the Best Newcomer to the Open Water Category. The Tralee Bay Masters were runners up in the Open Water Swim performance of the year category and the Cross Bay Challenge was the runner up in the best organised swim category. CHRISTOPHER FLYING THE TRALEE BOXING CLUB FLAG: Christopher Mongans is the last Tralee Boxer standing in the Irish championships. He travelled to Limerick with his coach Donie Jack Griffin and retained his Munster title by defeating Tommy O’Brien from the Viking BC. Shane Coffey was also in action in Limerick but he lost out in the all Kerry decider going down to Cashenvale’s Donnacha Sayers. These two had met in the County Final 3 weeks ago and while Shane was much closer this time, it was Sayers who deserved his win. There was no luck for the McCarthy’s – Mike, Patrick and John who made the long journey to the National Stadium for the All Irelands. The boys put up strong performances which pleased their coaches but this was not to be their day. However their hard work over the year will certainly play off into the future. MIXED WEEKEND IN LEAGUE OF IRELAND: It was a mixed opening weekend for the Kerry 15’s and 17’s with the younger age group going down 2-0 to Cobh Ramblers while the older team drew 2-2 in a game of two halves where they were 2-0 up at half time. Both teams have Easter off and will be working hard in training before the next games. NO JOY FOR RIAN: In a good week for underage soccer on the International scene they was no joy for Rian O’Sullivan’s u19 team. They missed out on qualifying for the European championships as they went down to Portugal in their final game. The Irish side finished second in the group but it is Portugal that advances to the finals. Cup weekend in the KDL: Teams will take a break from League action with the Cup taking centre stage over the Easter weekend. In the Jimmy Falvey Memorial ¼ finals Tralee Dynamos are away to Ballyhar while in the 17’s ¼ final The Park play Asdee Rovers. Mitchels Avenue take on Windmil, Friday 30th March 2018
Tralee Celtic are away to Camp United and CSKA Tralee travel to Fenit in the Greyhound Bar 2nd round while Spa Road are at home to Lizard Wanderers in the Tommy Healy Cup. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: The Tralee Dynamos Academy continues this Friday at 6pm in the Tralee IT. The coaches are delighted with the way these young players are applying themselves and are improving every week thanks to the level of coaching they are receiving. The three u11 teams had a successful weekend with wins over Fenit A and B and Inter Kenmare C. The managers of each of the teams were very happy with the way their sides performed. The 15’s side finished off their League campaign with a 5-2 over Killarney Athletic thanks to a Danny Burke hat-trick and two from Patrick Moravski. Leon Daly, Donagh Stephenson, keeper James Moran and Raymond Sila were best for Dynamos. This side has done very well all year and even though they lost 4 players to the League of Ireland the squad players stepped up. The 15’s lead the Division but Ballyhar only need a point from their last three games to pip the Tralee side for the title. Danny Burke made the Schoolboys Girls Team of the Week for his performance. Tralee Dynamos were delighted to see 8 of its players on League of Ireland duty with Kerry at the weekend. ON THE GREENS: CASTLEISLAND: In the Senior competition Mike O’Connor took the win from Des Byrne and Paul Geaney. In the Mixed Scramble the winners were Marie Gleeson, Mary Scanlon, Terrance McQuinn and Tim Sugrue. Second were Liam Sweeney, Marian Kerrisk and Tom Treacy. The Fitzgerald Elite Upholstery Easter Hamper Round 1 went to Naill Gilroy from John Haugh with Eamon Feeley in third. The Spring League was won by Naill Gilroy, Gary Kavanagh, Eamon Feeley, Patsy Sweeney and Con M,urphy. TRALEE GOLF CLUB: In the Castle Bar Spring League Plate Colm Sheehy’s team who defeated Brian Waldron’s. In the Club Singles Barry Murphy took the win from Hugh O’Farrell in second, Tom O’Driscoll third and Willie Goulding in 4th. In the Ladies Garvey’s Supervalu Spring League the winners were Mary Savage, Karen Gearon and Jenna Leen. In second was the team of Ber Walsh, Elaine McCarthy and Annette Dineen. In the Billy Nolan Jewellers 18 Hole Singles Stableford Laura Rafferty took the win with Dorothy O’Driscoll in second and Gorretti O’Connor in third.

Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
