Medical Matters “BREAST IS BEST FOR MOTHER AND BABY” BY NURSE MARY CULLEN SHEEHAN Breastfeeding is best for mother and baby and we encourage it as much as possible. Some women may choose not to breast feed and we respect that decision. While bottle fed babies generally do very well, medical research suggests that there are many benefits of breast feeding for both baby and mother. It is the ideal form of balanced nutrition. It is free, always available and always at the right temperature. Breast milk contains antibodies that help the baby fight infections. Breast fed babies have fewer ear or chest infections and less colic. It also helps lower the risk of babies having asthma or allergies and reduces risk of obesity and diabetes later in life. The risk of a baby having a “cot death” is reduced by 62% if they are breast fed. The benefits of breastfeeding to the mother include returning to her previous pre baby weight and shape quicker, less postnatal depression, and decreased risk of developing breast cancer or heart disease in later life. It can save time and money as formula does not need to be bought or bottles sterilised. It also ensures that busy mothers have regular time to sit and bond with their new baby.

Breastfeeding may look simple but many women may need some help and coaching. Problems sometimes encountered with breast feeding include difficulty getting the baby to latch on to the breast correctly resulting in sore or cracked nipples, not enough milk or breast engorgement and breast infection (mastitis). However with the correct help and determination these problems can usually be overcome. The doctors and nurses in The Ashe Street Clinic aim to be helpful and supportive to all new mothers. Other useful sources of help and support for breastfeeding are the midwives in the antenatal and postnatal wards of the hospital, public health nurses, family, friends and support groups such as La Leche League of Ireland and local breastfeeding groups. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Dáithí Putting The Kettle On Alzheimer Society of Ireland Tea Day (May 3Rd) Dáithí Ó Sé said: “I’m delighted to support Alzheimer’s Tea Day again this year, for a third year running. There’s 1,848 people living with dementia in Kerry today so that’s 1,848 good reasons to get the kettle on. What alarms me is that this number is set to double in the next 20 years. By taking part in this campaign you are helping to raise vital funds and awareness of a condition that is affecting so many of our family, friends and neighbours. What’s important to remember is that money raised locally stays locally, so by getting involved you’ll be supporting your own community” Alzheimer services in Kerry include day care, home care and Dementia Advisers. For everyone person diagnosed 3 people are directly affected. Alzheimer’s Tea Day, which is held on Thursday May

3rd, is the Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s (ASI) largest annual fundraising campaign, supported for the third year by Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology. Since the very first Alzheimer’s Tea Day in 1994 over €8M has been raised to provide essential support to the 34,650 Women and 19,800 Men living with dementia in Ireland today. Every year thousands of people host tea parties in their homes, offices and schools. This year we’re asking you to join them, all funds raised locally stay locally. “ There is nothing we Irish love more than sharing a cup of tea with friends and families, where the problems of the day are tackled. With 1 in 2 people in Ireland knowing someone who has been diagnosed with dementia, calling round for a cup of tea is also a great way

to bring a little light into the day of someone who may be isolated. “ says Daithi For more information or to register for Alzheimer’s Tea Day fundraising pack, visit www.teaday.ie or call (01) 207 3800 #timefortea

Tralee Credit Union changes its name to Cara Credit Union Tralee Credit Union’s 50th anniversary celebrations continued on Thursday 29th of March when they officially changed their name to Cara Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. by members at our AGM in December as we commenced our 50th year. Tralee Credit Union was set up to serve the financial needs of our members in Tralee. Over the years our common bond extended into Castleisland and Killorglin so our name was no longer inclusive to all three of these important towns and hinterlands. Cara Credit Union gives Killorglin and Castleisland their identity back as each office now has their town named over each office. The landscape of the Irish credit union movement has also changed, mergers will continue and in doing so will enhance the long term strength of credit unions. Our new name, Cara Credit Union will no longer define us geographically and will also help facilitate our growth for future mergers. Cara means a friend in Irish, it is part of our heritage and culture and is embedded in the credit union ethos and values. Cara Credit Union had plenty of celebrations throughout their three offices on Thursday with entertainment in each office, plenty of cash prizes and one lucky member Breda O’Callaghan from Tralee won a brand new Kia Stonic in their Members Car Draw. Cara Credit Union is the 5th largest community based credit union in Ireland serving the financial needs of its members throughout Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. It

has over 43,000 members, €220 Million in Assets, €185 Million in Savings and €74 Million out on Loan. Membership of Cara Credit Union is voluntary and open to everyone who lives and works within Tralee, Castleisland and the Killorglin area. Rose Hotel Circuit Of Kerry Rally Attracts Big Numbers! There’s little doubt that Niall The splendid and scenic west Kerry region provides the backdrop to Sunday’s second round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship, the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally that has attracted a strong entry.

The rally is also a counting round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship that began in Nenagh last February with Clonmel’s Roy White (Ford Fiesta WRC) taking victory.

Maguire (Subaru WRC) has bitter-sweet memories of the Circuit of Kerry, the former triple national champion has won and lost events in Kerry on a tie-break.

No other event in Irish rallying has been decided on tiebreaks as much as the Circuit of Kerry and while Maguire was involved in three such events, the last tie-break finish was in 2012 when local hero Thomas Fitzmaurice denied Cork’s Brian O’Mahony although the latter went on to win the overall title. As ever, for the local contingent, a strong performance on the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry is a very specific target. Last year, Tralee’s Tim Enright (Escort) claimed the bragging rights, however, Lyreacrompane man Quinn will endeavour to claim top spot on this occasion. There are others too, such as Kilflynn’s Tom Relihan, Killarney trio Charlie Hickey, Ed Murphy and Tadhg O’Sullivan along with Kenmare’s Vincent O’Shea, Ballylongford’s Tommy Mason,

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK!

Next week I’m heading to Thailand for 2 weeks! I can’t believe that came around so quick! I have been getting my Skincare bits together all week, organisation is key. When I think holiday skincare or even summer Skincare I think hydration. Hydration is key. Between long haul flights and exposure to more heat, humidity and air conditioning than usual, your skin can become dehydrated and dull very quickly if you don’t look after it. I’m not about that dehydrated life, no thanks. When I was packing my Skincare for Thailand I made sure to pack items that would not only hydrate my skin, but also protect me from the sun! First things first, flights. I never ever wear makeup when I’m flying. The dry environment paired with a full face of makeup is the perfect storm for a breakout. No thanks. I actually use facemasks on long haul flights. If you don’t want to be totally bare, mascara and a tinted moisturiser is the best way to go. No point being extra and glam on your long haul flight if it’s going to end in you spending your holiday trying to hide a big breakout.

Here’s my holiday Skincare essentials:

1

Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Cream For Face SPF 30 - I wouldn’t put anything less than factor 30 on my face. Premature ageing? No thanks. This face suncream both moisturises and prevents sun induced age spots. You can get this in SPF 50+ also, which I only found out. So I will definitely be purchasing that also!

2

Clarins After Sun Replenishing Moisture Care for Face and Décolleté - After your skin is exposed to sun, it’s essential to use an after sun to soothe and rehydrate the skin.

3

La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water - this is definitely not necessary, but I absolutely love it. It’s basically water enriched with minerals that you spray on your face to rehydrate and refresh the skin. Because I’m going to Thailand where it’s extremely humid, this will be good to spray on my face to cool down and refresh, especially mid hike!

16

4

Lancôme Energie De Vie Nuit - This is a night mask full of antioxidants that rehydrates the skin. I’m going to be using this on all of my flights to ensure my skin stays hydrated and fresh. It’s amazing.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HEY EVERYONE! This week I’m talking about how to go back into fitness after you hit a wall or feel demotivated for whatever reason. Sometimes there are unnecessary bumps in the road but sure isn’t that life! So this week I’ve put together a little list on how to get back on track after the bump…

WATER WATER WATER:

You can never have enough of this stuff, aim for as much as you can per day! 2litres plus.

SLOW & STEADY:

If it’s your first time back at exercise after a while and you go hell for leather and kill yourself you could easily over extend and get hurt. When getting back into fitness it’s good to push yourself, but know your limits. You’re not gonna be able to run a marathon your first day back. Take it easy, get help from a professional like Ronan in Hercules gym!

EAT RIGHT:

I can’t say it enough, you cannot, and I repeat CANNOT out exercise a bad diet! If you eat whatever you want all the time when trying to lose weight or get back on track then you won’t see results.

18

TRALEE ADVERTISER

DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP:

Yes, you for whatever reason have been lacking motivation/ unable to exercise/ whatever you’re excuse may be. But you’ve taken a step in the right direction by trying to get back into fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Of course it’s not going to be easy. If it was sure wouldn’t we all be walking around with bodies of gods! Just get the right motivation, be it a fitness class/ personal trainer/ new gym membership, whatever! Set goals and smash them!

I’m so happy with how far I’ve come with my fitness. And I’m even more excited to be heading to Titan Fitness Thailand on Monday! I’ll be updating you all next week! I can’t wait to see what it’s like, and to do all

Friday 6th April 2018

the different classes there. I’m dying to try the yoga and the Muai Thai! I’ll have all the updates here for the next few weeks so look out for that!

Stay fit guys, don’t quit!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

WARM TASTY COMFORT FOOD!

With the weather still not showing much signs of warming up, here is a good hearty stew to warm you on the coldest of evenings. Yes there’s a little bit of work involved but very much worth it. And if you make enough , we all know that a good Stew tastes even better the day after!

GUINNESS BEEF STEW

WITH CHEDDAR HERB DUMPLINGS

INGREDIENTS For • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

the Stew: ¼ pound bacon 2 pounds boneless beef chuck, chopped into bite-sized pieces Sea salt and black pepper 4 sticks celery, chopped 3 large carrots, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 large potatoes or parsnips, diced 1 turnip, diced 3 ounces tomato puree 1 (12 ounce) bottle Guinness 4 cups chicken stock 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 bay leaf 3 sprigs thyme 1 tablespoon cornstarch, or as needed ½ pound cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional) Chopped parsley

For • • • • • •

the Cheddar Herb Dumplings: 1 ½ cups self-rising flour 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/3 cup shortening 3/4 cup shredded Irish sharp cheddar 2/3 cup milk 2 tablespoons mixed fresh herbs such as parsley, chives, and thyme, chopped

METHOD Cook the bacon in a large, oven-safe, heavy-based pot or high-walled saute pan over medium heat.Remove the bacon, crumble, and set aside, but leave the bacon fat in the pot. Season the beef with salt and pepper and fry in the bacon fat until browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside the same pot, fry the onion, celery, and carrots until soft and fragrant, adding a little oil if necessary.Add garlic and fry for another 30 seconds. Stir in the tomato paste.Pour in the Guinness and Worcestershire sauce. Allow to come to a simmer and stir with a wooden spoon, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pot.Add the beef back to the pot and pour in the chicken stock. Add the bay leaf and thyme.Reduce to a simmer and cover. Simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add the potatoes or parsnips and the turnip. Simmer for another ½ hour, or until the vegetables are tender.Remove the bay leaf and thyme branches. If the stew is still thin, mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water to form a slurry. Mix the slurry into the stew and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce to a simmer again, stirring occasionally, and add in the mushrooms if desired. Cook for 10 minutes, uncovered, until the stew thickens and the mushrooms are cooked through. Stir the bacon back in. Preheat the oven to 160c.Stir together the self-rising flour and garlic powder in a medium bowl. Cut in the shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the cheddar cheese, then add the milk and stir until the dry ingredients are moistened.Make small balls with the dough and place them on top of the stew, leaving them room to expand– they grow a lot as they cook. Place the stew in the Recipes by oven uncovered and bake until the dumplings are browned and cooked through, about 30 to 40 minutes.Garnish the stew with parsley and serve.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A BUDDHIST MONK APPROACHES A BURGER FOOD-TRUCK AND SAYS “MAKE ME ONE WITH EVERYTHING.”

The Buddhist monk pays with a $20 bill, which the vendor takes, puts in his cash box, and closes the lid. “Where’s my change?” the monk asks. The vendor replies, “change comes from within.”

A POLICEMAN PULLS A FARMER OVER FOR SPEEDING AND PROCEEDS TO WRITE HIM A TICKET.

The farmer notices some flies buzzing around annoying the officer. The policeman is shooing flies more than he’s writing. The farmer says “I see you’re being bothered by those circle flies.” The policeman says, “If that’s what you call them, yes, they are somewhat annoying.” The farmer says, “Yeah, we call them that because we see them circling around the rear ends of horses.” The policeman says, “Hmmm. Did you just call me a horse’s ass?” The farmer says, “Oh, no sir, officer. I have way too much respect for those who serve in law enforcement to ever say such a thing.” The policeman says, “Well, that’s a good thing, then.” The farmer adds, “But ... it’s hard to fool those circle flies.

A MAN IS RUNNING LATE TO CATCH HIS TRAIN.

He asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:22 train.” The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you’ll even catch the 4:09 one.”

A BLONDE CAME UP TO THE LIBRARIAN AND YELLED, “THIS BOOK SUCKS! THERE’S WAY TOO MANY CHARACTERS AND THE STORY MAKES NO SENSE!” The librarian said, “So you’re the one who took our phone book.”

THREE GUYS, ONE IRISH, ONE ENGLISH, AND ONE SCOTTISH ARE OUT WALKING ALONG THE BEACH TOGETHER ONE DAY.

Three guys, one Irish, one English, and one Scottish are out walking along the beach together one day. They come across a lantern and a Genie pops out of it. “I will give you each one wish, that’s three wishes in total,” says the Genie. The Scottish guy says, “I am a fisherman, my Dad’s a fisherman, his Dad was a fisherman and my son will be one too. I want all the oceans full of fish for all eternity.” So, with a blink of the Genie’s eye “poof” the oceans were teaming with fish. The Englishman was amazed, so he said, “I want a wall around England, protecting her, so that no one will get in for all eternity.” Again, with a blink of the Genie’s eye “poof” there was a huge wall around England. The Irishman asks, “I’m very curious. Please tell me more about this wall.” The Genie explains, “Well, it’s about 150 feet high, 50 feet thick, protecting England so that nothing can get in or out.” The Irishman says, “Fill it up with water.”

ON FRIDAY, AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER POSES HER STUDENTS A CHALLENGE...

“If you can tell me who said the following quote, they don’t have to come to school on Monday: ‘We have nothing to fear, but fear itself’” A hand shoots up and little Billy Tran says “Franklin Delano Roosevelt”. “Correct, Billy. You can have next Monday off” the teacher replies. “I’m Vietnamese, we value education I’ll be here Monday”. “Ok” says the teacher “Lets try another one: ‘Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.’” This time the hand of little Susie Hou rises. “Abraham Lincoln” “Correct Susie.” the teacher asserts “Enjoy your day off” Susie says “Oh no ma’am. I’m Chinese, we also value education I’ll be here early on Monday morning”.

On St Patrick’s Day, a few weeks ago, a small bit of France opened up on Rue Du Pont (Lower Bridge st !) below the Abbey Inn. Thats right , Alexandre and Isobelle, all the way from Perpignan in the south of France have opened the doors of their delightful little shop called ‘Aux Délices de Lola‘ ... from France with love ...this shop is like stepping into a bit of France! And its a foodies dream with the best of French gastronomy...there are shelves full of Olive oils with truffles, Vinegars, Patés, Chocolates, Crepes, Biscuits, Fish, Breads... the list goes on!! Says Alexandre “ we have always worked in retail abroad and we have travelled a lot, and finally we moved here last Summer after a number of visits. We literally fell in love with Ireland and in particularly Kerry and Tralee. “We want to bring a bit of France into the heart of Tralee... Everything we have in our store has been sourced in France. This weekend we will be introducing our French Coffee ‘Cafés Pfaff,’ which was voted ‘Best Expresso in France in 2017’ and in a few weeks time we will be launching our French bread baked here in our store and of course our Charcuterie... And of course we cant forget the Tasting Table right in the middle of the store where you are greeted with and encouraged to try tastings of everything from patés to sardines to olive oils to chocolate .. there is no end !” We are also surprised at the amount of French people living in Kerry who have dropped in to wish us well ..and our course treat themselves to a little something “ says Isabelle. They are already asking us to put together some hampers as gifts for friends . We are only open a few weeks and are encouraged by the support that the people of Tralee (and France!) have shown us. Each week we have surprised our new customers with a little gift from us to show our appreciation so watch out for that ! So why not pop into Alexandre and Isobelle and sample that little bit of France 26

TORQUING CARS! LIMITED NUMBER OF TESLAS IN RECALL HERE Tesla can’t yet say how many Model S vehicles in Ireland are affected by the company’s voluntary recall to retrofit an element of the power steering.

The recall involves cars built before April 2016, so it is expected that the numbers involved here will be limited. However, exactly how many is unknown at time of publication. In a letter to customers outlining the reasons behind the voluntary recall, Tesla say they will “proactively retrofit a power steering component” in all Model S vehicles that were built before April 2016. It explains how they have observed “excessive corrosion in the power steering bolts” - only in really cold climates but particularly those that “frequently use calcium or magnesium road salts, rather than sodium chloride (table salt)”. The company plans to replace all early Model S power steering bolts in all climates worldwide. Meantime, it adds: “If the bolts fail, the driver is still able to steer the car, but increased force is required due to loss or reduction of power assist.” (Indo Motoring)

HYBRID BUT NO DIESEL IN NEW TOYOTA RAV4 DUE NEXT YEAR

oyota’s new RAV4 will not have a diesel engine when it goes on sale here next year. Instead there will be a hybrid and, possibly, a petrol for the Irish market. The absence of a diesel underlines Toyota’s decision to end sales of passenger cars with that power source by the end of 2018.It looks like the RAV4’s launch engines will be a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid and a 2-litre petrol. Toyota claims both engines give the RAV4 better fuel economy and more power. Built in Japan for Europe, there will also be 4WD versions of the popular SUV. The new model was revealed at the New York show last week. Sales here start in the first half of 2019, with a major emphasis on the hybrid. At 4,600mm, the new car is 5mm shorter, but with a 30mm wheelbase increase there is more room inside. It is also 10mm wider (1,855mm). The hybrid has an electrified rear axle that shifts power to the rear wheels independent of the engine, so space and weight are saved because there’s no need for a propshaft. However, in the 4WD system on the 2-litre petrol, there is a propshaft that disconnects from the engine to save fuel when the car is only driving the front wheels. (indo motoring)

VOLKSWAGEN’S ELECTRIC CAR WILL GO ON PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL HILL CLIMB THIS SUMMER his is Volkswagen’s four-wheel drive electric prototype, which its motorsport division is developing and which is scheduled to go on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in June. Which explains, I suppose, why they are calling it the ID R Pikes Peak. It has been created to show how modern-day electric drive systems perform. In its way, it is a flagship motor for the sweep of electric-powered ID road cars the company is due to make from 2019. Don’t expect all to have the appearance of a Le Mans prototype like this one, however. The preview comes with scant details, but expect an electric motor on each axle like versions of the company’s ID Crozz, ID Buzz and ID Vizzion concept cars. A large lithium-ion battery will power it. Since 1916, the 19.99km Pikes Peak hill climb (known too as the ‘Race to the Clouds’) has been held near Colorado Springs in the Rockies. The route runs from a 2,800-metre start to a 4,300-metre summit. Volkswagen last entered the climb in 1987 with a dual-engine 652hp Golf, but narrowly missed out. Now the automaker says the climb affords a fresh opportunity to show what is possible with an electric engine in motorsport. (Indo motoring)

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY TOURISM AND POWERS THAT BE MISSING A TRICK: Having spent four days over the Easter weekend on the Ras Mumhan and next week I will be at the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry one this for sure is that we have the ability to run major sporting events in this county. Other big events coming up include the Rally of the Lakes and the Ras coming to Kerry in the summer plus the Historic Rally towards the end of the year. Add in a Munster final every second year – or maybe a replay this year. So what is the common denominator outside of the sports themselves in all these events and others I could add? Well there are two that deserve mentioning. The first is the amount of volunteers that it takes to run these events. WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS THERE WOULD BE NO SPORTS: Of course it is the committees that run these sporting events and those who sit on these put in countless hours and months is the background planning to ensure everything is in place for the big day / s. They are willing to give these commitments without any rewards expect the satisfaction of running a great event. But we also know that no sports club, big or small, can run without volunteers but it’s a bigger commitment to volunteer for events outside of your club. Last weekend on the Ras Mumhan members of cycling clubs and others gave up part of their time over the Bank Holiday weekend to stand at a junction and ensure the cyclists got past safely. Many did more than one junction or had to wait for the race to pass more than once. And those on volunteer duty on Stage 3 in South Kerry did this in brutal weather with the cold and rain making it one tough Easter Sunday. This Sunday it will be those from the motorsports community who will be marshalling the stages of the Circuit of Kerry. The organisers have put together a tough 11 stage rally which will see one of the stages ran twice and the other three three times which will make it a long day for those controlling the stages. I was listening to members of the Fitzgerald Stadium committee on Terrace Talk and they were talking about a Munster final where they

36

need 4 stewards for every 1000 fans. So for a full house that is around 200 volunteers on the day. They come from all over the county and while the game might only be 70 minutes there day will be a long one. Now people might saw sure they see the game for free or get up close to the rally or the race. While that might be the case they have responsibilities and while I am sure they enjoy watching a sport they love it is not the same as watching it care free. Many of these volunteers also have to go through training which is further time that the give up willingly. So to all the volunteers who were on duty last weekend or who will be on duty this weekend or later in the year a big thank you. Once your event has passed of safely take a little bow in a job well done. We need to celebrate these volunteers more than we do but that’s for another column SPORTS TOURISM: While we have a great tourism product in most of the county I feel that the tourism authorities in Kerry overlook sports tourism or maybe it’s that the organisers of these events don’t shout loud enough regarding the numbers they bring to the county. I must say firstly that many of the tourist outlets in the county are great sponsors and the County Council give great support in many ways. But I don’t see a chapter in any Tourism Plans on Sports Tourism. Just look at Tralee last week the Marathon brought big crowds to the town while this Sunday the rally will do the same while for the Ras Mumhan based in Killorglin I would think that almost 500 people were booked into the area for three or four days. Many will have taken hotel rooms and eaten in restaurants but also remember that it should not just be about over- night visitors, even if these are the most important. Many participants and their families and supporters might just be around for the day. But they will all spend money and need to know where to do this. There are many opportunities to look at attracting more sporting events to the county and increasing the numbers that attend the ones we already have. I feel we need a Kerry Sports Tourism Forum where all the stakeholders are brought together for a day. Each event can

Friday 6th April 2018

present a short piece on their sport and the numbers it attracts and the financial benefits it brings. This aim should be to put together a Kerry Sports Bureau that will work with organising committees of sporting events and would lobby for funding for both overall marketing and individual grants. The Bureau would also look at other events that it might possibly attract to Kerry. Killarney benefits greatly from the Conference Bureau where all the stakeholders in the widest possible terms work together. Why not do the same for sport? Maybe a starting point would be a project done by students in the Tralee IT that would investigate the financial benefits of major sporting events to the county. These would need to have a national dimension and the ability to bring big numbers to the county so in addition to the events I mentioned at the start the Tralee Marathon would be another one that would be included. Sports Tourism is already a huge contributor to the counties revenue as well as generating a huge amount of goodwill. We should know exactly how much and how we can grow both aspects. SEAN’S THE TOP KERRY RIDER AGAIN: Tralee’s Sean Lacey enjoyed another very good Kerry Group Ras Mumhan taking 12th overall. However most of his time over the last two days was working for his Viner-Caremanrk-Pactimo teammate Conor Hennebry who took Yellow on Stage 3 and held it after a hard fought battle on Stage 4. They team all took the top award to make it a great Ras Mumhan debut for the new team. 181 riders started out with just under 160 getting to the end of the four days. From a Tralee Manor West point of view Cathal Moynihan was 16th overall and unlucky to just miss out on a number of breaks. Cormac Daly took 22nd while in the S2 category David O’Sullivan was 17th with Ciaran Slattery 29th and Cormac Daly took 12th in the Young Riders category. The team were a creditable 8th overall from 30 teams that raced in the Ras. ALL SET FOR THE ROSE HOTEL CIRCUIT OF KERRY: The splendid and scenic west Kerry region provides the backdrop to Sunday’s second round of the

Triton Showers National Rally Championship, the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally that has attracted a strong entry. The rally is also a counting round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship that began in Nenagh last February with Clonmel’s Roy White (Ford Fiesta WRC) taking victory. Four former national champions are amongst the 130 plus entry list with Donegal’s Declan Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC) first into action over the eleven-stage rally. While many of the top crews in the country will be on show the fans will be looking out for the locals. Last year, Tralee’s Tim Enright (Escort) claimed the bragging rights while this year Lyreacrompane’s Quinn will endeavour to claim top spot on this occasion. There are others too, such as Kilflynn’s Tom Relihan, Killarney trio Charlie Hickey, Ed Murphy and Tadhg O’Sullivan along with Kenmare’s Vincent O’Shea, Ballylongford’s Tommy Mason, Tarbert’s Jason Costello, Lisselton’s Pat Barry and Killarney’s John Hickey, all in Ford Escorts all vying for success. Elsewhere, Killarney’s Mark Falvey in his Mk. 1 Ford Escort competes in the Historic section. Two Kerry drivers are in the keenly contested Class 11F .Tralee’s Darren Young and Kenmare’s Shane McCarthy, both in Honda Civics will face stern opposition from the similar cars of Mallow’s Derek Butler and Donegal’s Michael Boyle. In the Junior category of the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Armagh’s Jason Black (Toyota Starlet) is the top seed, he won the opening round of the Triton Junior series in Mayo. The top six also features Monaghan’s Jonny Treanor (Honda Civic), Armagh’s Gareth Black (Toyota Starlet), Galway’s Billy Riordan, Tipperary’s Shane Norris and Clare’s Michael Hamilton, all in Honda Civics. The local challenge will be provided by the Honda Civic pair of Steven O’Connor and Daniel Chung. The Rally is being run by the Kerry Motor Club under Clerk of the Course Richard Talbot. The headquarters, Parc Feirme and service area is at the Rose Hotel with the first car away at 8.15am and on the first stage from 8.50am. The winners will be back at the hotel for the Finish Ramp around 5pm. BIG WEEKEND FOR LOCAL BOXER: On Thursday Tralee Boxing Clubs Christopher Mongans will have stepped into the ring for his National semi-final at 54kg where he faced Rosslare’s Jake Buckley. If he won the final is set for this Friday night. Ballyduff’s Jack Galway (Boy 1 72kg) and Charlie Fitzgerald (Boy 2 72kg) will also be in action in the National Stadium this weekend. Galway fights James O’Boyle (Armagh Cross) on Friday while Fitzgerald will be in action the night afterwards. Ballyduff’s Cathal Enright is a National Champion after winning the Boy 1 68kg.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the John and Mark Killeacle Dowling Memorial plus a top class supporting card. On Saturday night there is an all sponsored fundraiser for St Michael’s College Listowel in association with Kerry Palliative Care. On the card are the semi-finals of the William Costello Construction coursing bred stake. Entries are now been taken for the Lee Strand A3 confined 550yds which begins on Fridayt April 20th. Entries to racing office or for unrecorded trial enquiries please call racing office on 061 448057. DUNNES LADIES HAVE THE BRAGGING RIGHTS: The Turners Bar Invitational soccer tournament was once again held on Easter Sunday with the proceeds going to Temple Street Children’s Hospital and the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus. The tournament was played at the IT staff of Dunnes Stores reached both finals. It is the Ladies final Dunnes Stores Horan Centre beat Profitness in the decider while in the men’s big game Brog Warner saw off the workers from Dunnes Stores NCR. HEARTBREAK FOR OSCAR TRAYNOR SIDE: There was heartbreak for the Kerry Oscar Traynor side as they went out to Sligo/Leitrim in the Oscar Traynor ¼ in the Showgrounds in Sligo. The home side won 2-1 with the winner coming with the last kick of the game which was gutting for the David Hennessy managed side. Locally Tralee Dynamos had a big win in the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youths Cup ¼ final when they defeated Ballyhar Dynamos 5-1. There was action in the Greyhound Bar and Tommy Healy Cup over the weekend. Mitchels Avenue won in the former on Sunday with Spa Road defeating Lisard Wanderers in the latter. On Monday in the Greyhound Bar Cup Tralee Celtic saw off Camp United while Mitchels Avenue B were defeated by Mainebank in the Tommy Healy. Tralee Dynamos had a very important and encouraging 3-1 win over Castleisland FC in the Denny Premier A with Shane Lowth hitting a hat trick. Huge Game for the Park Youths: Christy Leahy Park will be the focus of the local soccer scene this weekend as The Park take on St Kevin’s Boys in the semi-final of the FAI Youths Cup. The Park deserves great credit for reaching the last four of the prestigious competition. Killarney Celtic reached the final of this competition over a decade ago so occasions of this don’t come along too often. The Park have supplied a number of players to the Kerry 17’s League of Ireland side but those that they have brought into the squad have certainly stood up to the challenge. The Tralee side will be underdogs against the top Dublin side but their home ground has seen some big days and this could be another.

LEAGUE OF IRELAND SIDES AWAY: Both the Kerry League of Ireland sides are away with the 15’s in Galway hoping to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to Cobh Ramblers while the 17’s will be looking to build on their very good 2-2 draw against UCD when they travel to Limerick. PARNELLS NEWS: Good Luck U12 Boys in Croke Park: Best of luck to the under 12 boys who travel to Croke Park this week to represent Tralee at the Go Games Blitzes. Easter Camp: Well done to all those who were involved and who attended the Easter Camp, these were a great success. U16 Boys County League: The u16’s lost out to Ardfert in tough conditions in Caherslee. They will be happy with their score of 1-13 but Ardferts goals at the start of both halves cost Parnells. The Minor are were in action in midweek. This was a great achievement for the club fielding a minor standalone side. Under 14 Camogie: All players are requested to please make a special effort to attend training on Friday 13th of April. Mentors have been working towards the possibility of a great opportunity for this team and we will be announcing details very soon at training. The club was delighted to see Darragh Reen and Ruairi O’Sullivan lining out at 12 and 13 for the Kerry u17’s. AUSTIN STACKS PARK: The under 8’s and u10’s were delighted to take part in a Blitz at John Mitchels over the weekend and will train again this week. The u12’s had an enjoyable Easter Monday trip to Legion in Killarney with the u14’s trained this week ahead of their League. The u15’s took part in the Pa O’Brien Tournament in Fermoy and after 4 wins reached the final going down to St Jude’s of Dublin in the decider. The u16 A’s got their League off to a good start beating Laune Rangers and will play Gaeltacht next. The B’s game versus St Pat’s is on Friday. Scor na bPaisti: The County Final takes place in the Intermediate School Killorglin on April 22nd. The club is looking for 4 primary school members to take part in the Quiz. CAMOGIE NEWS: Roscommon got the draw they needed in Tom Healy Park in the Littlewoods Ireland Division 3 and will now face Tyrone. Kerry will also be happy as they face a much shorter trip as they will face Clare. Both Kerry and Roscommon are expected to come through and will meet in the final in the coming weeks. Both sides drew 7 points a-piece so they won’t be much between them if they reach the final Cillard and Causeway will need a third game to decide who will represent Kerry at Feile 2018. Causeway won the first game but Cillard gave their followers plenty to cheer about in the second game in Kilmoyley. There was only a

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

point in it at half time but in the end Cillard won 3-1 to 2-2. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 06, 16, 20 and 24. The next jackpot will be e6,900 with the draw in Skelper Quane’s.Juvenile Academy The Academy players enjoyed their Easter training sessions and were visited by Foxy with Easter treats. Chloe Passway was the U8 Player of the Week. The u8’s and u10’s are encouraged to practice their skills with the training balls provided. The u12 Boys and Girls trained hard with a couple of sessions over the Easter holidays. The under 12’s play Scartaglin in the County League this Sunday at 6pm. The u14 Girls play away to Churchill in the County League while the Boys were defeated by a strong Dromid Pearses side. The 16’s were due to play Milltown/ Castlemaine in Round 2 of the Central Region competition last Monday. The minors and Beaufort were involved in a goal fest with the home side beating the St Pats boys 7-18 to 5-13. They play Spa next on Friday April 13th. The Seniors went down away to St Michael’s Foilmore in the first game in Group 3 of the Castleisland Mart Junior Premier Club Football Championship. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no joy for the seniors in their first game of the Castleisland Mart Junior Premier Club Championship. Played at John Mitches they went down 1-07 to 0-08 to Finuge. In tough conditions Ballymac tried hard but were three points down inside 6 minutes and by the break they were five down 0-04 to 1-06. Fingue scored the first point of the second half but it proved to be their last score as Ballymac hit the next four points. But they ran out of time and lost by 2 points. Ballymac must beat Listowel Emmets this Saturday when they are at home at 6.30pm. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,11,21 and 25. This week’s jackpot is e4100. In the underage section Ballymac U12 A’s and C’s take on Rathmore in the County League in Ballymac at 6.30pmwhile the u12 B’s play Finuge at 6pm the same evening. The u14’s play Fossa in the County League with the B’s up against Laune Rangers B in Killorglin KERINS O’RAHILLYS NOTES: The seniors went down to Stacks after a game where that was tight for long stages. Indeed the sides were tied at the break at 0-07 apiece. David Moran missed out through injury while the loss of Barry John Keane to a second yellow card was also a pivotal moment in the game. Stacks finished the stronger to take the win. Attention now turns to this Sunday week when current club and county champions Dr Crokes visit Strand Road, where throw in is at 2.30pm.

Friday 6th April 2018

The cold weather did not put the Junior Blues off as there was a great turn-out for training. The Easter Bunny was busy and made a visit that was very welcomed by the young players. The players of the week were Rian McCoy and Hannah O’Sullivan at u6’s, Katie Higgins at u8’s and Grace O’Shea at u10’s. They train again this Sunday at 11am. The u12’s play Milltown/ Castleimaine this Sunday, at 6pm, while the u14 A’s lost to Fossa and the u14 B’s went down to the Crokes. The u16’s last out to Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane in the Central Region League in a game where they had a last minute penalty saved. The minors had a very good Friday as the beat John Mitches 2-07 to 1-08 in a game that doubled up for both the County League and the Coiste Tra Li. The Girls Leagues are starting and the teams have been working hard in preparations for their games. The club thanks everyone who contributed and supported the bake sale held during the Kerry v Westmeath game. Congrats to Katie Nix who won the raffled Easter cake. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,25,27 and 29. ON THE GREENS: IN CASTLEISLAND in the Senior competition Cyril Quigley took the win from John O’Connell and Pat Walsh in third.
