LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Cycling Maeve is hoping to do the Ring of Kerry cycle and is getting into top gear with the new bicycle she bought. The bright evenings are back and the roads are busier so here we’ll look at the most relevant rules of the road for cycling now she’s out on the highways and byways. It can be a great way to keep fit but you should always obey the Rules of the Road, being safe and visible is paramount and even though cyclists are not required by law to wear helmets or high visibility clothing common-sense dictates otherwise. Reflectors are required by law at all time on your bike, high visibility vests are cheap to buy and can also be obtained free at your local Garda Station or at the Road Safety Authority online at RSA.ie. Helmets are a must have especially for kiddies so get one that fits at your local bike shop. New on the spot fines have been introduced for cyclists and one should always be aware of them: Offences now the subject of €40 fines are: Cyclist driving a pedal cycle without reasonable consideration, no front lamp or rear reflector lamp lit during lighting-up hours on a pedal cycle, Cyclist proceeding past traffic lights when the red lamp is illuminated, Cyclist proceeding past cycle traffic lights when red lamp is lit and Cyclist failing to stop for a School Warden sign. The front and rear lights that can be seen from a reasonable distance. The front light must be white or yellow, while the rear light must be red. It is legal to use flashing lights. A bicycle used in a public place must have an audible bell and brakes, one for the front wheel and another for the rear wheel. If you receive a fixed charge notice, you have 28 days from the date of the issue of the fixed charge notice to pay the fine. If it is not paid within 28 days, the charge is increased by 50%. If it is still unpaid after a further 28 days then court proceedings are initiated. Legal Quip: Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance you must keep moving. Albert Einstein

Medical Matters INFERTILITY BY DR KAREN SOFFE Infertility is a condition preventing the conception of children and affects up to 1 in 5 couples. The diagnosis is given after attempting to conceive for at least 1 year without success. Often perceived to be a predominantly female problem, in reality, only one-third of infertility cases are related to the woman alone, one-third are related to men and the remaining one-third is a combination of fertility factors involving both partners or unknown causes. Conception and pregnancy are complicated processes that depend upon several factors, including: • the production of healthy sperm by the man • healthy eggs produced by the woman • unblocked fallopian tubes that allow the sperm to reach the egg • the sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg when they meet • the ability of the fertilized egg (embryo) to become implanted in the good quality lining of the woman’s uterus. • sufficient embryo quality If ANY of these factors is impaired, infertility can be the result. CAUSES Male Factors: azoospermia (no sperm) and oligospermia (too few sperm), or abnormal Sperm. For men with low sperm count or motility issues, life style modification may resolve the issue such as not smoking, reducing alcohol and not using illegal drugs (e.g. marijuana, cocaine, etc.).

Female Factors: Problems with ovulation affect about 25% of all infertility situations often due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or obesity. Other causes include blocked fallopian tubes after pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis, or anomalies involving the structure of the uterus e.g. fibroids. Age can be a factor since the ability for ovaries to produce eggs declines with age, especially after the age of 35. If you are worried about your fertility, visit your GP. Taking a detailed history, carrying out a simple examination and doing some simple tests including blood testing and an ultrasound, may identify the problem. It is important to remember that 85% of cases do not require advanced therapies like IVF. Lifestyle modification or treating an underlying condition may be all that is required. All women who are trying to become pregnant should take a folic acid supplement.

A key-note address will be given by Anne O’Leary, CEO of Vodafone Ireland and by Minister for Communications Denis Naughton. Stephen

Rae, Editor in Chief, Independent News and Media will give the conference’s closing address. The organisers recognise that the zeitgeist is changing in terms of how society views and treats women and are keen to encourage and empower diverse, female voices in Irish public life.

Joan O’Connor, Chairwoman of Women in Media said “The Women in Media conference comes after what has been a seminal year for women in Ireland. It is fantastic to have such inspiring and influential industry leaders taking part in debate and discussions throughout the conference weekend. We are excited to provide this important forum and delighted to announce our new partnership with Vodafone Ireland.” Anne O’Leary, CEO of Vodafone Ireland said “The Women in Media conference is a unique event bringing together luminaries from across Irish media to discuss and debate pressing issues both for the media and across Irish society. Promoting equality and diversity is integral to everything we do at Vodafone Ireland and we are delighted to be involved with an event that plays a key role in promoting women’s voices and perspectives in Irish public life.”

Group Business Editor of Independent News and Media and former recipient Dearbhail McDonald will present the annual Mary Cummins Award for Women of Outstanding Achievement in the Media. Two new additions to this year’s conference are the Women in Comedy session, chaired by journalist, Barbara Scully with panellists, Fiona Looney and Katherine Lynch and the awarding of the Joan Kennelly Special Merit Award celebrating the founder of the Kerry’s Eye newspaper.

The sixth Women in Media conference will take place on Friday 20th April to Sunday 22nd April 2018. The only event of its kind in Ireland, Women in Media

provides a forum to discuss the achievements of and challenges faced by women working in the media, political and related sectors. Joan O’Connor is the founder of Women in Media and owner of Kilcooly’s Country House Hotel where the conference takes place. The Women in Media event specifically acknowledges the lifetime achievements of two women with strong links to Ballybunion. They are the late Mary Cummins, a former journalist with The Irish Times and Seanad Eireann reporter and the late Maeve Binchy, international successful novelist, who spent most of her teenage summers in Ballybunion.

Aware Education Programmes Coming to Tralee!

Aware, Ireland’s leading organisation providing support, education and information services around depression and bipolar disorder, today announced that its popular Life Skills Group Programme and Relatives & Friends Programme will both be available to the people of Kerry this April/May. Both programmes are free of charge. The Relatives & Friends Programme is designed for those supporting a loved one experiencing depression or bipolar disorder. The programme, six hours over the course of four weeks, aims to provide helpful information about depression and bipolar disorder, provide practical advice, address the challenges faced each day when supporting a loved one. The content also addresses self-care, teaches coping tools and communication skills and equips people with the tools to understand and support a loved one experiencing depression or bipolar disorder, while also focusing on the self-care of the supporter. The Relatives & Friends Programme will begin on Tuesday 17th April at Rose Hotel, Tralee. The Life Skills Group Programme, nine hours over the course of six weeks, will teach attendees how to better cope with the stresses of everyday life, recognise and manage unhelpful thoughts, learn new ways of thinking and ultimately begin the journey to a healthier and more confident life. The Life Skills Group Programme will begin on Thursday 19th April at Randles Hotel, Killarney. The programmes are delivered in workshop style to offer a participative learning environment. Each evening session is 90 minutes long. The workshops provide an opportunity for discussion but at no stage is anyone asked to share information if they do not wish to. Online registration for the programmes is now open at www. aware.ie and places are available to anyone over 18. Those interested in attending are encouraged to book quickly as places are limited and will fill up fast. The Aware education programmes are free to attend, with a refundable 30e booking deposit in place to ensure participants that really want to book a place have the opportunity to do so. The booking fee will be refunded by contacting Aware once all modules in the course have been completed.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PART-TIME WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE PAYMENTS Question I’m working part-time on a low wage. Do I qualify for any social welfare payments? Answer It depends on your personal circumstances. Many people work part-time before taking up full-time employment. If you are working part-time you can, in some cases, keep or apply for a partial social welfare payment, or you may qualify for additional supports. If you work over 38 hours in a fortnight and you have children you may be able to claim Working Family Payment (WFP), formerly known as Family Income Supplement or FIS. WFP is a weekly tax-free payment for people on low pay. You may be able to claim a jobseeker’s payment for the days you are not working. You can work part-time for up to three days a week and claim a reduced Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance payment. You may qualify for the Part-Time Job Incentive Scheme if you were getting Jobseeker’s Allowance and find part-time work for less than 24 hours per week. However, one of the main conditions for getting a jobseeker’s payment is that you must be available for work and actively seeking work. This means that you must continue to look for work on the days you are unemployed. You must also be unemployed for at least four days out of seven consecutive days. If you return to work after a period of unemployment, you may qualify for the Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) which aims to help families move from social welfare into employment. The BTWFD and WFP can be paid together and the BTWFD is not taken into account in the means test for WFP. If you are parenting alone and getting a One-Parent Family Payment, you are allowed to earn a certain amount each week and keep your payment. In some cases, people getting disability payments can do some work and keep a social welfare payment.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re all having a great week. As you may or may not know, I went to the Makeup By Mario Masterclass last weekend in London with Keilidh (@keilidhmua) & Blanaid and Carol from Cloud10 Beauty.

And OH MY GOD, it was one of the BEST weekends ever. Like you’ve no idea. (I’m in the middle of editing my vlog for YouTube at the moment) First off, Keilidh is literally SO nice. Exactly the same as she is on social media, and we got very well. It was so good chatting to her about all things makeup and positivity! She has such good vibes.

The Masterclass by Mario was ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!!! Like, he has SO SO much knowledge and experience in all things makeup & gave SO many tips and tricks. Also the goody bag was… oh my god.. I can’t even. We got products from Laura Mercier, Charlotte Tilbury, Huda Beauty, Glamglow and SOOOOO much more. I’m so so thankful I got the opportunity to attend The Masterclass. Mario has worked so hard to get to where he is, he’s all about hard work and sacrifice to get where you want to. Thanks again to the amazing gals at Cloud10 Beauty and Keilidh!

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re having an amazing week!

I have arrived in Titan Fitness Phuket, currently sunbathing whilst writing this - freelance benefits eh? Today was day two… I got here yesterday, after over 24hrs of traveling I was literally a walking zombie. So yesterday I napped, got up, ate at Health’s Kitchen & did my own training session in the gym. I met Kim, the owner, he showed me around and explained everything! With my package, I get 3 meals a day, unlimited training at the gym and unlimited classes. My room is great, and literally directly across from the gym. This morning was day one of classes, at Titan you get to choose whichever classes you want to go to so I said I’d take it handy… joke, go hard or go home! First today was the Big Budda Run at 6:30am - not gonna lie I contemplated heavily not going. But I went, it was basically an uphill 5k… I’ve never done a regular 5k so I was pretty sure I’d come last. To my surprise I didn’t… I did it in 42mins! And the views on the way up were INSANE. Absolutely insane.

After completing Big Budda I literally felt invincible. That class was tough, but not impossible! Training in the heat isn’t actually as bad as I initially thought. Once you keep your water intake up you’re good. I absolutely love the vibe here - it’s so social! Like everyone I’ve met has been SO nice & friendly. I’ve heard off a few people that a few of the other camps here aren’t as social. So I’m very happy I’m in Titan. Tomorrow is Thai new year, so everything is closed. But I have signed up for Beach Training Saturday morning at 8:30am. I’m absolutely loving it here literally only here a day but I just love the vibe. If you’ve any questions at all send me an email - Rebecca. shortt94@gmail! Or message me on Instagram @rebecca. shortt. I’ll check in next week!

After that I had breakfast and then it was time for Body 360 a HIIT circut class.

Dinner Party Salmon Many people love Salmon, and the taste of Wild Salmon has to be experienced (We don’t use Farmed Salmon in our Croi Restaurant) So here is a show stopper of a whole side of Wild Salmon for a dinner party

WHOLE WILD SALMON FILLET

WITH MUSTARD SAUCE

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1 1/4 cups extra-virgin olive oil 1 large shallot, thinly sliced 1/4 cup chopped dill Sea salt Freshly ground pepper One 4 1/4-pound salmon fillet with skin 1/2 cup sour cream 1/4 cup whole-grain mustard 1/4 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons Champagne vinegar

METHOD Step 1 In a bowl, whisk 1 cup of the oil with the shallot and dill; season with salt and pepper. Pour twothirds of the marinade onto a rimmed baking sheet; add the salmon skin side up. Spread the remaining marinade over the skin. Cover. Refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours. Step 2 Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk the sour cream with the mustard, lemon zest, lemon juice, vinegar and remaining 1/4 cup of oil; season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate the sauce until chilled, about 15 minutes. Step 3 Preheat the grill and position a rack 6 inches from the heat. Scrape the marinade off the salmon and transfer it skin side down to another large rimmed baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper. Grill the salmon for about 12 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the fillet registers 75c. Let the salmon rest for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a platter. Serve with the mustard sauce.

TRUTH OR DARE Exhibition opens at Siamsa Tíre The Truth or Dare art exhibition officially opened on Friday 6th April in the

Siamsa Tíre galleries. The three artists, Grace Roberts, Suzanne Mortell and Nuala O’Sullivan, all graduates of Limerick College of Art and Design, were delighted with the great attendance and support of their art works on the night with a number of paintings sold on the night. Catriona Fallon, CEO Siamsa Tíre stated on the night, “In the art world, it can sometimes feel as if painting and wall-based art is going out of fashion, that artists no longer need to express their thoughts on canvas or board. This exhibition really demonstrates the impact of 2 dimensional artworks, whether in paint (as used by Nuala and Suzanne), or in Grace’s works which are a more complicated mixed media.” She continued, “One strong element of this exhibition, and its impact on us as viewers, is the really vibrant use of colour and a strong sense of the feminine - three female artists, whose work is bold, adventurous, colourful, and in parts magical and mystical. It has been a pleasure working with these three talented artists.” A quote from Oscar Wilde provided the impetus for this group submission, “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” This is as applicable now as ever, particularly with the anonymity possible on social media that can bring out the best or the worst in people.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! BIG FARM

A Texan rancher comes to Ireland and meets a Kerry farmer. The Texan says, “Takes me a whole goddam day to drive from one side of my ranch to the other.” The Kerry farmer says, “Ah sure, I know, sir. We have tractors like that over here too.”

JOB DONE

A Spanish singer chatting on television used the word ‘manana’. When asked what that meant, he said it means “maybe the job will be done to-morrow, maybe the next day, maybe the day after that, next week, next month or next year. Who cares?” An Irishman in the conversation, Shay Brennan, was then asked if there’s an Irish equivalent. “No. In Ireland we don’t have a word to describe that level of urgency”

WHERE IS MULLIGAN?

Two Irishmen met and one said to the other, “Have ye seen Mulligan lately, Pat?” Pat said, “Well, I have and I haven’t.” His friend asked, “well what d’ye mean by that?” Pat said, “It’s like this, y’see…I saw a chap who I thought was Mulligan, and he saw a chap that he thought was me. And when we got up to one another…it was neither of us.”

OUR HOUSE

Murphy was selling his house, and put the matter in an agent’s hands. The agent wrote up a sales blurb for the house that made wonderful reading. After Murphy read it, he turned to the agent and asked, “Have I got all you say there?” The agent said, Certainly ye have…Why do you ask? Murphy replied, cancel the sale, the place sounds grand to me

TEA BREAK

There was a Scotsman an Englishman and an Irishman all sitting on a tea – break on a building site the Englishman pipe’s up if my wife put’s Cheese on my sandwich’s again Iam going to kill myself and the Scotsman say’s if my wife put’s Egg on my sandwich’s again I will kill myself and the Irishman say’s if I find Gammon on my sandwich’s again I will kill myself so sure enough the next day all three open up there lunch boxes and find the sandwich’s are all full of Cheese ,Egg and Gammon once again so they all go off to different part’s of the site and kill themselve’s later in the week all three men are being buried and the englishman’s wife say’s if he diddn’t want cheese on his sandwich’s he should have told me and this wouldn’t have happened then the Scotsman’s wife come’s away with the same statement concerning the Egg sandwich’s then the Irishman’s wife pipe’s up I can’t understand this, Paddy make’s his own sandwich’s

FRIDAY NIGHT

Late one Friday in Dublin, a policeman spotted a man driving very erratically. He pulled the man over and asked him if he had been drinking that evening. ‘’Aye, so I have. ‘Tis Friday, you know, so me and the lads stopped by the pub where I had six or seven pints. And then there was something called ‘Happy Hour’ and they served these mar-gar-itos which are quite good. I had four or five o’ those. Then I had to drive me friend Mike home and o’ course I had to go in for a couple of Guinness -- couldn’t be rude, ye know. Then I stopped on the way home to get another bottle for later...’’ And the man fumbled around in his coat until he located his bottle of whiskey, which he held up for inspection. The officer sighed, and said, ‘’Sir, I’m afraid I’ll need you to step out of the car and take a breathalyzer test.’’ ‘’Why? Don’t ye believe me?’’

OHH MY GOD!

O’Connell was staggering home with a small Paddy in his back pocket when he slipped and fell heavily. Struggling to his feet, he felt something wet running down his leg. “Please, God,” he implored, “let it be blood!”

TORQUING CARS! ALL ROADS LEAD TO KILLARNEY AS AUTO, TECH WORLDS GEAR-UP FOR ELECTRONOMOUS 2018

An international line-up of experts from the automotive and technology industries will gather in Killarney, Ireland, this May for Electronomous, the annual forum for topics including electric vehicles, connected car technology, autonomous vehicles, cyber security and more. The conference, organised by vehicle history and data expert Cartell.ie, will discuss how technology is changing all aspects of the automotive world including the rapid development of mobility solutions, as well as other key industry processes such as insurance, finance and sales. The main attraction of Electronomous is a panel of globally-renowned speakers, including Marcus Rothoff, Head of Volvo’s Autonomous Driving programme; Uwe Puetzschler, Head of Car2X at Nokia; Barry Napier, CEO of Cubic Telecom; and Gareth Dunsmore, Electric Vehicle Director with Nissan Europe, to name just a few. The event will be hosted by Quentin Wilson, former ‘Top Gear’ presenter and award-winning motoring journalist. According to Jeff Aherne, Director of Cartell. ie: “Technology is disrupting all aspects of the motor industry. Electric is replacing combustion and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are paving the way to Autonomy. This is an opportunity for all those with an interest in the space to understand what is coming”. Commenting on the event, Quentin Wilson said: “Electronomous is a major future transport event with industry-leading speakers, experts and fascinating debates. If you’re interested in the new era of personal mobility – it’s unmissable.” Some of the confirmed attendees for Electronomous 2018 include Volkswagen, IBM, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Applegreen, Valeo, TomTom, Audatex, the European Council for Automotive R&D (EUCAR) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The event will begin with a high-profile ‘Electric Drive’ from Dublin to Killarney on the afternoon of 2 May, with TV & Motoring broadcaster Kirsteen O’Sullivan leading a fleet of electric vehicles on a 300km road trip in the company of motoring journalists and special guests. The drive will give members of the public a chance to see the range and capabilities of EVs for themselves. NEW FORD FOCUS SET TO ARRIVE IN JULY The 1-litre EcoBoost comes with 85PS, 100PS and 125PS outputs while the 1.5-litre EcoBoost pumps 150PS and 182PS.

They expect the 5dr 1-litre EcoBoost will have emissions of 107 g/km, with the 1.5-litre EcoBoost starting from 122 g/km or thereabouts. The 1.5-litre diesel comes in 95PS and 120PS guise with emissions as low as 91g/km for the 5dr. The 2-litre diesel (150PS) starts from an anticipated 112 g/km. The net result, Ford say, is they can claim a 10pc reduction in emissions across the new Focus range. Trim levels include Trend and Titanium, ST-Line, Vignale etc. It is not possible to accurately predict what will be standard, trim specific or optional, but there is a lot of stuff to go around by the looks of things. Among the items on board, depending on your choice, will be a FordPass Connect embedded modem for connectivity on the move, a wireless charging pad, SYNC 3 with 8ins touchscreen etc. The wi-fi hotspot (up to 4G) includes a complimentary wireless data trial that expires after three months or when 3GB of data is used. After that you need a subscription to Vodafone to avail of it. Other elements include a first head-up display for a Ford model in Europe, active park assist two, drive modes, continuously controlled damping, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, speed sign recognition and lane centring. You can also go for adaptive front lighting or evasive steering assist - all selfexplanatory but likely to be on the more expensive models. Normal, Sport and Eco driving modes make their debut, while the new B&O PLAY 675- watt system has an impressive 10 speakers. You can expect to hear a lot more about the Focus over the coming weeks. It’s one of the major sellers here, but buying time will be limited this year given its arrival schedule.(indo motoring) 34

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Kenmare Bay Hotel. Well done to all those who will be recognised on the night.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR SUCCESS BECKONS FOR CAMOGIE TEAM: While the Kerry Ladies football team did not have a good League campaign, see piece below, the Kerry camogie team had a campaign to remember and it has brought them to the decider this weekend. They will face Roscommon in the Littlewoods Ireland National Camogie Division 3 final in Kilmallock on Sunday with a 2pm throw-in. These are easily the top two sides in this League and it expected to be a close encounter as all the games between the two sides are. Kerry qualified for the final by beating Clare in Tom Healy Park in Abbeydorney in a game that was proceeded by a minutes for the bother and cousin of Clare fullback Becky Cahill who died in that car crash on Easter Sunday. Kerry were quick of the mark and were being led by the excellent Patrice Diggin who hit 3 early points as Kerry went out to a 0-06 to 0-00 lead inside 20 minutes. Kerry could have put the game out of reach of the visitors but credit the Clare keeper who saved a penalty. Kerry still led at the break 0-07 to 0-03. Kerry continued to forge ahead and when Diggin did goal the game was well over with the Kingdom running out 1-11 to 0-04 winners. Kerry Team and Scorers - Alanna Maunsell, Liz Houlihan, Niamh Leen, Michelle Costello, Elaine Ryall, Sara Murphy, Aine O’Connor, Patrice Diggin 1-9 (0-5f), Laura Collins, Caoimhe Shanahan, Aoife Behan, Orla Young, Rachel McCarthy, Jackie Horgan 0-1, Alannah Whelan 0-1. Substitutions: Clodagh Walsh for Rachel McCarthy, Jessica Fitzell for Aoife Behan, Norette Casey for Alannah Whelan, Kate Buckley for Jackie Horgan and Juilanne O’Keeffe for Laura Collins. CHANCE OF A FRESH START FOR THE KERRY LADIES: With the end of a League campaign that the Kerry Ladies will not look back on with too many fond memories it is a good time for a fresh start. While the girls have been regulated they certainly showed great pride in the jersey with a very good performance away to Dublin. In the end they went down 1-16 to 1-11 but this was a good showing and one that

proves, if proof was needed, that there is talent in this squad. There is about 2 months to the Championship and the search for a replacement to Graham Shine has begun. Shine stepped down for business and personal reasons after a number of successes in the Ladies game over the last few years including two u16 All Ireland victories. He was thanked by the Assistant Secretary on behalf of the Ladies GFA Board Donal Rahilly who said that they are now “looking at possibilities at the moment but want to make sure that we get the right person for the role.” The backroom team that are in place along with 2017coach Ciaran McCabe who joined them for the Dublin game will continue to work with the girls as preparations continue for the upcoming Munster Championships. It is now the time for a fresh start for the whole Ladies set up and a situation where ineligible players were used should not happen again. A week is a long time in sport so 8 weeks to the championship is plenty of time to turn things around but the position of the manager and management teams needs to be sorted long before then. TRALEE SAILORS IMPRESS ON THE WATER: The Volvo Youth Sailing Championships took place in Dublin Bay with 213 competitors from 26 sailing clubs taking part. It was a good event for Tralee Sailing Club members especially Justin Lucan who recovered his series hopes by winning the final race to defeat Johnny Flynn from Howth Yacht Club by a single point. Justin continued his good form as earlier in the month he was on the podium at the Magic Marine Easter Regatta in Brassemermeer where he was only two points behind the winner. He fellow Tralee Bay Sailing club member Eimer McMurrowMoriarty was 15th in the Optimist class and the second girl home, just three places behind the first girl Emily Riordan. TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB SET FOR A BUSY SUMMER: Members of the Tralee Bay Swimming club will be involved in the Beach Clean-Up on Saturday morning April 14th. Once this has Friday 13th April 2018

been done thoughts will turn to the World Series of Swims. The opener is the Hugh Culloty Expert Electrical sponsored swim that takes place on Wednesday May 30th at 7.30pm. The Paddy O’Sullivan Memorial Cup will be the prize for the Waterworld Tralee swim on June 14th. The series will end with the 8th swim, The Gerald Walsh Memorial on September 10th and there is a full list of all the swims and dates on the Tralee Bay Swimming Clubs Facebook page. NIAMH LEAD IRELAND HOME TO BRONZE: Presentation Secondary School Tralee student Niamh O’Mahony did the town proud in the S.I.A.B Schools Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park in Nottingham. Niamh was the first member of the Irish team home from the squad of 8. This helped the team secure third place and a bronze medal. TRALEE WOMEN’S RUGBY TEAM INTO LEAGUE FINAL: Tralee’s women’s rugby team have qualified for the League Division 1 final after a nail-biter with Ballincollig. The game finished 17 all but the Tralee side were the stronger in extra time to take the win. Captain Maura Collins along with Siobhan Fleming, Riona Kennedy, Muirne Wall and Norma O’Connor stood out in a very good team performance. The under 18 boys lost out by the narrowest margin in the West Munster Cup going down to the Castleisland / Abbeyfeale combination. JUMPING FOR JOY: There was great success for Kerry’s high jumpers in the Irish Life Health National Juvenile Indoor championships. St Brendan’s Darragh Courtney won gold in the Under 18 boys with a jump of 1.90m, winning on count-back. Tralee Harriers Jordan Kissane took bronze in the u16 Boys competition. There was also a gold in the long jump when the Harriers Conor Commane leapt to gold in the 16 boys competition with a distance of 6.09 metres. Rebecca Falvey from the same club did well in the u16 Girls long jump. The Kerry Athletics Awards Night Banquet and presentation takes place on Friday April 13th at the

LACEY 5TH AS DAVENPORT TAKES THE CYCLEWAYS CUP: Fresh from his exertions on last weekend’s Kerry Group Ras Mumhan James Davenport (Strata3 VeloRevolution) showed no ill effects of the tough 4 days by winning the Cycleways Cup in Navan. Tralee’s Sean Lacey (Viner-Caremark- Pactimo) was 5th and was part of an eight man chasing group that failed to catch Davenport and second placed Charles Prendergast. Next up for the top riders are the races in Blarney, the second round of the National Road Series this weekend while the John Drumm Cup in Currow takes place on Sunday April 22nd. AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the final of the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling memorial plus a top class supporting card. On Saturday night it’s the final of the William Costello Construction coursing bred stake over 325yds. Starting on Friday week is one of the top events of the year with the Lee Strand 550yds for A3 confined greyhounds and entries to the Racing Office on 061 448057. CIRCUIT OF KERRY TITLE GOES NORTH: Donegal drivers Donagh Kelly (Ford Focus WRC) and Declan Boyle (Ford Fiesta WRC) served up a terrific battle for supremacy on the Tralee based Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry, round two of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. Kelly and his Monaghan co-driver Conor Foley took the spoils as they finished 16.4 seconds ahead of Boyle and his Monaghan co-driver James O’Reilly. Clonmel’s Roy White and his Cork co-driver James O’Brien (Ford Fiesta WRC) were third - a minute and 19.3 seconds further adrift. Locally, Lyreacrompane driver Mike Quinn (Ford Escort) and his co-driver Tony Healy were the top Kerry Motor Club crew and were awarded the James O’Rourke Perpetual Trophy, they had an untroubled run throughout the day’s ten stages. Kilyflynn’s Tom Relihan /Maurice McElligott (Escort) finished second in Class 13 and lead the Moriarty Centra Farranfore Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship. The Historic section was won by Killarney’s Mark Falvey/Damien Fleming (Ford Escort). The event drew huge numbers and was a credit to Clerk of the Course Richard Talbot, the Kerry Motor Club members and the huge number of volunteer marshals who were on duty for the day. A QUERY FOR GAA HISTORIANS: Brian Caball, who does such great work keeping us up to date with all that’s happening in the Black and Amber underage section is looking for information from any GAA historian that might be able
