LEGAL CORNER

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES BUYING A SECOND HAND CAR Maura has got a new job so the time has come to buy her first car, the cost of a new one is too much right now so she had decided to go for a second hand one but doesn’t know where to start, so let’s look at some of the major points in choosing a second hand car.. It is often a lot cheaper to buy a second hand car. There are many different ways to buy a second hand or used car, these include from a garage or car dealer, at a car auction or through the small ads on the internet or in the papers. From a garage or car dealer, in this case you, are protected by the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 as you are buying a car for your personal use from a person whose normal business it is to sell cars. As a consumer you have the same rights if you buy an item second hand as if it is new. In this case if you find a fault with the car after you have bought it the dealer is the person who must set matters right. The dealer may also give you limited warrranties and one can shop around for the best warranties. These give you rights above your statutory rights in relation to refund, car replacement and repairs. It is also important to note that if you buy a car for commercial purposes then there may be restrictions on these protections. At a car auction, often you can find very good bargains at car auctions which are held regularly. However, the auctioneer cannot be held responsible for any defects found after you have bought the car. Through a small advertisement vehicles are often advertised by private owners on the internet and in the small ads of newspapers. If you buy a car a car this way from a private owner you are generally not buying from a person whose normal business it is to sell cars. Again in this case you have very little legal protection if you find that the car that you have bought is faulty so it a very good idea to have a trained mechanic give the car a good look over before you buy. Tips for buying a second hand car include, check the condition of the car, you’ll need to do more than kick the tires! Check the history of the car and very importantly has the car ever been crashed and does the mileage shown by the odometer add up, check if there is outstanding finance on the car and also check the paperwork of the car. Legal Quip: My new car is very environmentally friendly. It never starts. If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, Co.Kerry LL 066 7181596 Mobile 087 2604753

NORMA FROM PREMIER TRAVEL ANSWERS YOUR TRAVEL QUERIES.... Q: We are planning a family holiday and always find it stressful, do you have any tips for planning and going on holidays? Mark and Julie, Killarney

Holidays are a great time to unwind, experience something new and re-charge the batteries. Yet part of a holiday can be incredibly stressful don't worry you are not alone. Having to sort out flights, accommodation, insurance and not to mention organising your family!! My top tips are:

Plan as far in advance as possible, If you are not computer savvy find a good travel agency that will organise the trip for you they can book day trips and the car park at the airport so you know everything is organised in advance. • Always check your travel documents in advance • Check that your passport is in date • Allow enough time for any delays on your way to the airport (road works and traffic) • If traveling with kids remember to pack snacks and toys to keep them entertained colouring books etc trust me as a mother you will be glad you did. If you have a portable DVD player or can borrow one I found this great when going on family holidays. • Pack light lets face it we never use all the stuff we pack!! • Make a list of places you would like to see and things you would like to do while away, ask your travel agent they can organise some of these trips before you go. Most importantly enjoy your holiday we all work so hard these days it is important to enjoy every minute of the holiday just remember you deserve a break :)

“Baked the Traditional Way” Harringtons of Kenmare

In 1995 Jerry Harrington decided it was time to start his own bakery. He had been working as a baker for some time and felt the heritage, craftsmanship and values of the ancient craft of Irish bread making should be maintained. Therefore Jerry converted his garage into a bakery and started baking high quality Irish breads and bracks, using only the finest, purest, 100% Natural, wholesome ingredients. Harringtons Bakery was born! In 2011 Harringtons opened a purpose built bakery at Gortamullen Business Park in Kenmare. Nowadays 7 artisan bakers work here day and night. They produce a wide range of breads and bracks, which are delivered throughout the counties Kerry & Cork by 6 delivery vans. Harringtons Bakery is what we call a small batch producer (vs. larger continuous manufacturers), which enables total commitment to product quality and flexibility.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PUBLIC PETITIONS Question There is an important issue that I feel isn’t being considered by the Oireachtas but should be. I’ve heard that it is possible to make a petition directly to a parliamentary petitions committee. How does this work? Answer The Joint Committee on Public Petitions considers petitions from members of the public on matters in which the Houses of the Oireachtas have the power to act. Anyone except for members of the Oireachtas can submit a petition. To make a petition, you fill out a form which is available on the Oireachtas website oireachtas.ie. The form can be submitted by post, by email or online and only one signature is required. The committee secretariat can assist you in completing the form and can also give advice on the type of petitions which can be accepted. You should be able to show that you have already taken steps to resolve the issue, for example, through raising it with the Ombudsman or directly with the relevant government department. The Joint Committee will not consider a complaint which has been the subject of a decision by an Ombudsman, a regulatory public body or a body set up for the purpose of redress. If the petition is accepted, the Committee may respond to it in a number of ways. It may: • • •

Refer the petition to another appropriate committee, Ombudsman, regulatory public body or redress body Report to the Dáil and Seanad with recommendations Request the petitioner to attend a meeting and address the committee

The parliamentary petitions system is a way that you can take your concerns directly to Parliament and seek to influence the parliamentary agenda. Further information on the Joint Committee on Public Petitions is available on oireachtas.ie or from the Citizens Information Centre below.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR IN SIAMSA... A REVIEW BY MARK LEEN “I went to see the latest offering from Tralee Musical Society on Wednesday night, the acclaimed West End hit, Jesus Christ Superstar. Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics by Tim Rice, this 1970s rock opera tells the story of the last week of Jesus’ life through modern rock music and contemporary slang. The story focuses on Jesus’ human psychology, fear, and anger in accepting his role as both leader and martyr, and Judas’ struggle in making the decision to betray Jesus. A great crowd showed up for the traditional patrons night, many of the business people of Tralee who actively support the Musical Society were there with bells on and looking forward to a good night of entertainment, and TMS didn’t disappoint. The first thing I noticed was the amazing set, I was left in awe at the scale of the effort put forth by Oliver Hurley and his team. Ever

the perfectionist, I was left thinking that Oliver must surely consider an original production someday. Then I spotted the band, including live Brass, Musical director, Drums, lead and the ever reliable Jimmy Canty on bass. I must admit I still think of Billy Curtin who played with the Society band for many years and is still very much missed. I had been up to Heiton Buckley at Clash on a few occasions prior and had noted Jerry Lynch’s appearance coming close to that of the traditional Christ, he informed me he was playing the lead and from that moment I looked forward to it. I had never heard Jerry sing before. Boy what a talent he is, Jerry really looked so close to what many perceive Jesus to look like, I would say it was uncanny. He played the part so well and carried it off with his excellent singing and especially his high voice singing which was the show stopper of the night. All of the Lynch family were excellent in this one, playing

Jesus, St Peter, Pontius Pilate and Mary Magdalen. The cast were superb, Arron McLarnon stood out with his voice as did James Finnegan as Zerra among others. The mechanics involved in the set were wonderful, the sound was never better and the cast were full of energy and really up for this one. Judas was dominant in the role throughout. As a Christian I got quite emotional as the flogging and the crucifixion and had tears in my eyes, but laughed my head off at the cross dressing caper

at Herod’s palace. Instant standing ovation at the end and loud cheers for all, but the loudest shouts of bravo came for the star of the show, Jerry Lynch. Proud dad and another great singing legend, John Lynch of The Playmates was duly proud, to see four of his children in leading roles in a musical is some achievement. This show is strongly recommended, that is...if you can get a ticket.! “ Mark Leen Photo by Jim Sheehy

SEAN KEEPS ON GIVING! Chris Shortt from The Tralee Advertiser met up recently with Sean Lyons , from Caherslee . A Teacher , Toastmaster, Storyteller,Poet Master of Ceremonies, Marathon runner and proud Mayo man , Sean tells me about his involvement with the charity GIVE and his most recent trip to Gambia.. Gambia Ireland Volunteers in Education (GIVE) is a charity that gives Irish teachers an opportunity to share their skills and knowledge with colleagues in Gambia. Gambia is a small country in West Africa, with a population of around two million. I was appointed field director for GIVE last year. The organisation has developed from a long term partnership between the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation Credit Union and the Gambia Teachers’ Union Credit Union. This partnership has been 16

ongoing for over twenty years and the Gambian C.U. is one of the most successful and respected financial institutions in the country. Joe Griffin, from Lispole, was among an INTO delegation to Gambia in 2008 to identify areas in education where the partnership could be extended. Further discussions with stakeholders on the ground led to the setting up of GIVE. My first trip last November involved meeting all the partners in Gambia. We work closely with the Catholic Education Secretariat. Although the country is 95% Muslim, much of the education is facilitated by the Catholic Church. Indeed, one of the most impressive aspects of the country is the harmony between the people of different faiths. It is not unusual to see a mosque and a church on the same street. I returned to Gambia at the end of January to lead a group of a dozen teachers on a five week project. Four of the Friday 28th April 2017

team were highly experienced in early years learning and they ran a training course for twenty five Gambian teachers. Another colleague ran courses in office management along with IT training. One of the challenges facing women in Gambia is the high dropout rate from formal education of young girls. Skills Centres offer training to young women in this situation. I worked with seven of my Irish colleagues in three of these centres, teaching literacy to young women aged sixteen to twenty four. I also ran management training seminars for school principals and administrators. I was interviewed in Gambian TV about the project! Gambian education faces many challenges. Classrooms are overcrowded, equipment is scarce, power supplies erratic. Many teachers are poorly trained and families struggle to pay for the basics needed for

education. GIVE is making a contribution that will, I believe, have significant long term benefits for the country and the people. The feedback we received from our partners in education in Gambia indicates that they agree. (Further information on GIVE can be had at http://www. giveireland.ie/. I am available to talk to schools, community groups etc and can be contacted through giveireland@gmail.com ) Thank you Sean

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE CHAMBER ALLIANCE HOLDS KEY TALKS WITH TÁNAISTE, MINISTERS, FIANNA FÁIL LEADER AND IDA CHIEF THREE Cabinet Ministers, including the Tánaiste, have given commitments to retain full court services in Tralee, to retain the Kerry-Dublin PSO and to secure a high quality client for the Advanced Technology Building at Kerry Technology Park. Tralee Chamber Alliance led a delegation of high profile business people and public representatives to meet with An Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at Leinster House, Dublin on Tuesday 4th April. The group also met with the Fianna Fáil leader, Mícheál Martin and his party’s Justice and Jobs spokespeople, Jim O’Callaghan and Niall Collins; the CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan; American Chamber of Commerce Public Affairs Director, Brian Cotter; AIB’s Group Head of Business Banking, Catherine Moroney; and the CEO of Stobart Air, Graeme Buchanan. It was followed by an hourlong meeting last week with the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross during his visit to Tralee. The Chief Executive of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “The objective of the meetings was to raise our concerns and put forward some solutions to issues relating to business investment and job creation in the town. The Mayor of

Tralee, Cllr Terry O’Brien and Tralee Town Manager were in attendance at the meetings with IDA and American Chamber of Commerce. We were encouraged by the level of positive commitment from current and potential decision makers in respect to job creation, law and order and connectivity. Kerry TDs John Brassil, Michael HealyRae, Danny Healy-Rae, Brendan Griffin and Martin Ferris helped to secure the appointments at Leinster House. Joe Shannon and Diarmuid Leen from AIB Bank Tralee facilitated a number of business meetings at AIB Bank Centre in Ballsbridge.” While the Minister for Justice and Equality, France Fitzgerald gave a commitment to retain court services in Tralee, the group informed her that the proposal to build a new courthouse on a green-field site at Ballymullen Barracks would have a devastating impact on the town centre. The Tánaiste said that other options would be considered but she and her advisors, who were in attendance, added that the renovation of the existing courthouse on Ashe Street would be the least likely option owing to the huge cost. At separate meetings, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor and the CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan, both underlined their commitment

to secure a new company for the Advanced Manufacturing Building at Kerry Technology Park. The delegation also called on the politicians to the finalise the legislation that will lead to the establishment of the Munster Technological University in Tralee and to include a commitment to bypass Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale in the ongoing mid-term review of the Capital Infrastructure Plan. Minister Ross was also asked to confirm the start date for work on the Macroom and Adare by-pass projects. A copy of the Invest in Tralee Brochure, published by Tralee Chamber Alliance and a promotional video “Tralee in 60 Seconds”, on an e-card from Digital Greetings at HQ

Tralee, were presented at each meeting. The delegation included Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Terry O’Brien; Tralee Town Manager, Michael Scannell; former Tánaiste, Dick Spring; CEO of Dairymaster, Edmond Harty; CEO of Aspen Grove Solutions, Sean Ryan; Managing Director of HR Suite, Caroline McEnery; Managing Director of Storystock, Francis Fitzgibbon; Ireland Head of JRI America, Shane Walsh; Vice President of IT Tralee, Bríd McElligott; Foundation Director of IT Tralee, Ogie Moran; Joe Shannon and Diarmuid Leen from AIB Tralee; and Tralee Chamber Alliance CEO and President, Kieran Ruttledge and John Drummey respectively.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017

A SPRING IN YOUR STEP! Well Spring is here... late of course but better late than never !The gardens are springing to life, with more colour each week so here are two spring dishes for you to try...

SPRING RISOTTO INGREDIENTS

• • • • • • • • •

1 bunch asparagus, woody ends trimmed, cut into 2-inch/5cm lengths 8 oz/230g English peas, shelled 8 oz/230g sugar snap peas, stems and strings removed 6 oz/170g fiddlehead ferns (optional) 1 Tbsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 onion, minced 2 cups/400g arborio or carnaroli rice 1 cup/240ml dry white wine

• • • • •

1 cup/240ml plus 1 qt/960ml chicken stock hot 2 tsp sea salt, plus more Ground black pepper 1/2 cup/50g grated Parmesan cheese 1/3 cup/85g basil pesto

METHOD

1. 2. 3. 4.

5.

Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil. Prepare a bowl of ice water. Add the asparagus to the pot and blanch, just until bright green, about 1 minute. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to the ice water to stop the cooking, about 30 seconds. Transfer the asparagus to a colander to drain. Repeat with the English peas, sugar snap peas, and fiddleheads. Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion and sauté just until translucent, about 30 seconds. Add the rice and stir until opaque, about 1 minute. Stir the wine into the rice, bring to a simmer, and cook, stirring periodically, until the rice absorbs the wine, about 5 minutes. Stir in 1 cup/240ml stock and 2 teaspoons salt, return to a simmer, and let cook until the liquid has been absorbed. Spread the rice mixture on a baking sheet and set aside until you are ready to finish the dish, or skip this step and keep cooking, continuing with adding the hot stock. About 15 minutes before you’re ready to serve, return the rice mixture to the sauté pan and cook over medium heat. Stir 1 cup/240ml of the hot stock into the rice mixture and cook until the moisture has been nearly absorbed. Season with salt and pepper. Repeat for the remaining 3 cups/720ml of stock, adding 1 cup/240ml at a time. When you still see liquid pooling here and there in the pan, remove from the heat and stir in the blanched vegetables and the Parmesan. Quickly stir in the pesto and serve. Store risotto, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

SPRING PEA BUTTER

This butter goes brillantly with so much and is so easy to make! INGREDIENTS

• • • • • •

1 & 1/3 cups fresh shelled peas (from about 1 pounds pods) or frozen peas, thawed 1 teaspoon sea salt, plus more 1/2 cup 350g plus 1 tablespoon butter, room temperature, divided 1 medium shallot, finely chopped 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest

METHOD

1. 2.

If using fresh peas, cook in a medium saucepan of boiling salted water until tender, about 3 minutes (if using frozen peas, do not cook). Drain, transfer to a bowl of ice water, and let sit until cold, about 3 minutes. Drain and pat dry. Melt 1 Tbsp. butter in a medium pan over medium high heat. Add shallot and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a food processor. Add peas, pepper, lemon zest, 1 tsp. salt, and remaining 1/2 cup butter; pulse until just combined

Hello beautiful people! I hope you’re all having a great week. I’m off on holidays this week so I’m going to be talking about an essential staple for my week off. Less makeup more pampering! I love coconut oil, it has so many uses and benefits. HAIR MASK: Coconut oil will give your hair a silky texture and lots of shine. I use coconut oil as a hair mask at night after I’ve washed my hair. Simply heat up about 5 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, so that it’s a warm liquid. Then, apply it to your hair like any other hair mask. Put on a plastic shower cap or wrap an old T-shirt around your head, and leave the oil in while you sleep. The next morning, wash it off in the shower and wow, hello perfect hair! The sun this week will dry out my hair lots so this mask will definitely the a saviour! EYE MAKEUP REMOVER: I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup. It takes every little bit of eye makeup off and also promotes eyelash growth. Win win situation! BODY MOISTURISER: If you rub a little bit of coconut oil between your hands, you will immediately notice how incredibly moisturising it feels on your skin. As a body moisturiser, coconut oil is much more hydrating than average store-bought lotions because the oil penetrates deep layers of the skin and actually helps to strengthen underlying tissues. It will also help remove dead skin cells, removing any rough or flaky texture from your skin’s surface and giving you a full body glow. You can use coconut oil as a moisturiser for your entire face, but I like to put it under my eyes and on my lips before bedtime. The best part about this oil is that it will absorb into your skin without feeling oily or greasy. Perfect way to maintain that holiday tan!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK This week I’m at home training in my favourite gym The Brandon in Tralee! It has so many facilities, classes and a huge range of equipment which is exactly what I like.

from machine to machine not really knowing what you’re doing or why you’re there, you’re wasting your own time and money. I’m not saying you have to go out and spend a fortune on a personal trainer 5 days a week, unless you want to. But I am saying definitely talk to someone with knowledge so that you can gain the most from your money spent. Here are my top tips for getting the most out of going to the gym…

All the trainers in there are super friendly and full of knowledge, easy to approach if you’re confused. It’s also a big spacious gym so even when it is a little busier, it doesn’t feel crowded. I will be talking more about my experience in The Brandon next week so keep an eye out for that! This week I’m going to to talk about the importance of knowing what you’re doing at the gym! When it comes to going to a gym, knowing why you’re there and having specific goals is essential. There’s no point going to the gym and hopping

24

TRALEE ADVERTISER

1. Sit down, and ask yourself what you want: What do you want to gain from going to the gym? Do you want to lose body fat? Gain muscle? Put on weight? Knowing what you want from going to the gym is the first step. 2. Talk to a trainer: Whether it’s one of the people who work in your gym or another personal trainer, I think it’s very important to talk to someone in the know about what you want to achieve from going to the gym. Most gyms I have been in offer free consultations with their trainers where you can talk about what you want etc. Otherwise you can contact a personal trainer

Friday 28th April 2017

and have a once off consultation where they will make you a gym programme and talk to you about food and your own personal diet. You can go to a personal trainer as often as you like, you don’t have to go 5 days a week. 3. Set goals: Once you meet the trainer make sure to set goals that fit you and what you want from going to the gym. And I’m not talking long term unachievable goals, O’m talking realistic short term ones to keep you motivated. 4. ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN: Whenever you are going to the gym, always have a plan of what you are going to do, for example, leg day, hiit cardio, arms and chest etc. By having a plan you know exactly what you are there to do and it will keep you on track and focused.

The Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town event has been organised by the Bank in partnership with the local community in Tralee. Following the success of the Enterprise Town Programme in 2016, which involved 100 communities across the country, Bank of Ireland has confirmed that over 120 Enterprise Town events are taking place nationwide this

year. Events are free to attend and are open to both customers and non-customers of Bank of Ireland. Tralee Bank of Ireland Branch Manager, Gerry Enright, added: “Our theme is “Celebrating Tralee” and the local community have embraced this initiative wholeheartedly, and working together we have organised a very exciting programme of activity. The event will be free to attend and is open to all. It is a fantastic opportunity for the community to see the level of enterprise here in Tralee.” “Bank of Ireland is investing in excess of €1.2 million in its Enterprise Town initiative in 2017. and Tralee wants to lead the way as one of the

best events .” “Over the course of the two days over 200 exhibitors will display a wide variety of products and services, and Bank of Ireland is calling on all those living and working in Tralee to come and support these local businesses. There will be sports displays , a Special production from Oliver Hurley , Celebrity panel interviews , Prizes, Food tasting from Tralee Culinary Gangsters , a Fashion show ...indeed its a real family affair ! says Gerry The event will also feature a special guest appearance from Ireland’s favourite dragon

Gavin Duffy on Friday 5th May and the voice of Gaelic Games, commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, on Saturday 6th May. With something for everyone to look forward to, including Local Business and Sports panel discussions - this event is not to be missed!

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! AN IRISHMAN APPLIES FOR A JOB AT HIS LOCAL STABLES After being shown around the yard the Irishman was asked if he has ever shoed a horse before, After a long pause... He replies “I’ve haven’t, but I once told a donkey to buzz off”

A MAN WALKS INTO A PET STORE AND ASKS FOR A POLAR BEAR

surprisingly the store has one for sale. But the assistant warns the man: “Do never, under any circumstances, tickle the bear behind the ears.” Of course, the man buys the bear and cheerfully takes it home. After a while he can’t help the urge any more and tickles the bear behind the ears. With a wild roar the polar bear lunges at the man, who runs away in great fear. The bear chases him through the whole house, down the stairs, into the kitchen and around the table, where he finally catches up to the man, pats him on the back and says: “Tag, you’re it!”

THE UKRAINIAN FARMER AND HIS SON

A Ukrainian farmer had a son who wanted to go to university “Son, you not want to go university; stay here and work with me on farm” “No father. I go to university to learn many things” So the son goes. Months later, the son comes home for break. The father says, “So my son, you go to university. What you learn?” And the son says “I learn ‘Pi r squared’” “You dumb son of a bitch! See what good university does for you! Pies are round! Cakes are square!”

WHO HAS BETTER FRIENDS

A husband and wife are having a friendly debate one night, centered on the topic of who has better friends. They each offer a wide variety of anecdotes and stories, but in the end, they decide to put it to the test. “Here’s what we’ll do,” the wife suggests. “I’ll call your friends, and you call mine. We’ll both pretend that the other person hasn’t come home yet, and that we’re worried. Whoever’s friends give the best advice about where to find us clearly know us better, and therefore are better.” The husband agrees to the game, and they both head off into separate rooms. When they reconvene a half an hour later, the husband looks defeated. “Okay, honey,” he says, “I think it’s pretty clear that you have better friends. Every one of them listed each of your favorite restaurants, salons, shops, and art galleries, and they had phone numbers for each of them. They knew your work hours by heart, your office extension, your boss’s name, and even the route that you take home.” The wife shakes her head. “No, dear,” she replies, “you have better friends.” “Why do you say that?” asks the husband. “Well,” the wife replies, “most of them said that you’d been at their place, and three of them said that you were still there.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TOUR DE MUNSTER 2017 ANNOUNCEMENT AT BALLYSEEDY HOME & GARDEN CENTRE, TRALEE Details of the charity partnership, that sees the 17th annual Tour De Munster Charity Cycle once again “share the journey” with Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) Munster Branches, were officially announced on Saturday, April 22nd at a Family Fun Day at Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre in Tralee, held in association with the Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland, and attended by cyclists, friends and families connected to DSI. This will be the 8th successive year that the national charity has been the beneficiary of popular 600km cycle around the six counties of Munster, which this year takes place from Thursday 10th – Sunday 13th of August. A new addition to this year’s Tour de Munster is the option for cyclists to select their own beneficiary and raise funds and awareness for it. Fundraising can include personal sponsorship, but also commercial sponsorship whereby a sponsor logo placement will accompany a donation attracted by that participant. Since its inception in 2001, Tour de Munster has raised over €2.4 million for its

beneficiaries, with over €1.9 million for DSI alone, with a staggering €285,655 raised in 2016. All cyclists cover their own expenses. Speaking at the Partnership Announcement, Phil Keohane, Tour de Munster Branch Liaison Officer, and cycle participant, said “The support DSI Munster branches have received through this partnership over the past seven years has been phenomenal, and we appreciate every cent raised. Funds raised make a tremendous difference to the lives of people with Down syndrome in Munster, as well as their friends and families, by providing vital services and facilities in each county.” Paul Sheridan, who established Tour de Munster, could not be prouder of the Tour and its many participants over the years, added “DSI is an extremely worthy beneficiary of the Tour and over the last seven years of our partnership we have received a huge amount of support from both the charity and families themselves who benefit from the funds raised. I Paul concluded “It is at events like today, where we meet these wonderful children and adults, that we are reminded

of why we do what we do.” Tour de Munster’s annual Partnership Spin coincided with the Charity Partnership Announcement. A new route for the cycle saw the cyclists going west to take in West Kerry’s finest spots through Camp to Annascaul and back to Tralee via Castlemaine. Cyclists paid homage to Tom Crean along the way and adventurous participants tested their stamina on Caherconree. This year’s Tour de Munster begins on Thursday, August 10th in Cork City and continues over four days around the six counties of

Munster until it culminates back in Cork on Sunday, August 13th. Cycling legend, Sean Kelly, who is an avid supporter of Tour de Munster, will once again cycle with the group for the full four days of the Tour. Clare FM, Tipp FM, RedFM and WLR FM are the Official Media Partners of Tour de Munster 2017. For more information on Tour de Munster log onto www. tourdemunster.com, find it on Facebook, or follow the Tour on twitter @tourdemunster. RELEGATION BATTLE GIVES STACKS V O’RAHILLYS DERBY EXTRA BITE !

This weekend sees a feast of local GAA matches happening with Churchill playing Na Gaeil on Saturday in the Junior Premiership Championship. But the real deal is on Sunday evening as local rivals Kerins O Rahillys and Austin Stacks Seniors go head to head in a relegation battle as both teams fight for Senior Div 1 Status. The match throws in at 6pm in Tralees state of the art pitch and while O Rahillys have bragging rights after beating Stacks in the Senior Town League recently , this local derby takes on a life of its own as form tends to go out the window ! Stacks will be smarting after experiencing their lowest scoring game in decades as Dr Crokes took the points in Killarney last weekend . While O Rahillys know they left the game behind them last weekend as they lost out by a single point to Kenmare. Whoever wins will secure Senior Status ...whoever loses will have one more roll of the dice with a final match after this to direct their fate. “No quarter given , None taken “...there never is in this local derby! 36

TORQUING CARS! CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH)

If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@ telegraph.co.uk

Question of timing We have a 2008 Fiat 500 1.2 with 24,000 miles. It was serviced at Halfords recently and we were advised to have the cambelt changed if it had not been done. We checked the service records and it had not been done but, later that day, a different engineer said it was not needed until 72,000 miles. Who is correct? PC I also have a 500 1.2 and had my cambelt changed at seven years old and 17,000 miles. It needs timing belt, tensioner and water pump. It’s best to fit a new auxiliary belt, too. Since Fiat dealers charge only £300 plus VAT, it’s best to have it done there. The water pump is crucial because they are prone to developing hidden leaks.

High hopes My wife and I run a very economical Honda Insight hybrid and have been delighted with its reliability. However, we need to change to an automatic car with easier access. It must still be economical to run and we would prefer second-hand with low mileage. What do you suggest? PS New, the Kia Niro, Toyota C-HR hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 hybrid are the only hybrid SUV crossovers below £30,000 so far (though the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is on the cusp). Alternatively, a Peugeot 2008 1.2 PureTech 110 EAT6 auto. I can’t recommend anything second-hand that meets your criteria.

Full steam ahead I took delivery of the latest Mercedes E-class and noticed the headlights were partially fogged over. Thus far the condensation is still there. Is this a Mercedes design fault and is it reasonable to expect Mercedes to sort it out? KB It’s reasonable to expect the supplying MB dealer to fix this. It’s caused by different expansion and contraction rates of the polycarbonate lens, the headlight reflector and the car body collectively breaking the seal.

An opportunist knocks It looks like the UK will follow the American lead in terms of class action lawyers pursuing the VW Group following recent scandals. My EA189 Audi 2.0 TDI was rectified after a year, so technically it has been fixed. If the lawyers are successful, will I be eligible for compensation if I have not been part of the class action process? TL My view is that if you are not part of one of the three class actions, you are not entitled to anything. And if your car has been satisfactorily fixed with no performance or fuel economy drawbacks, I am appalled that anyone should attempt to seek something for nothing. I’ll fight for people whose emissions fix has been botched or has else ruined the car, but not for the money-grubbing brigade.

Reelin’ in the Yaris I’ve owned my 2003 petrol Toyota Yaris since new and it has done 254,000 miles. It is still going strong and has given me very few serious issues but, planning ahead, what would be a worthy replacement: another Yaris? Are they as good? Money is tight so that needs to be taken into consideration. CO Try to find the same thing - a Mk1 1.3 up to 2005. There are still some out there with fewer than 50,000 miles under their belts.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR HURLERS NOT THINKING OF CHRISTY RING: The old adage that the sooner after a defeat you get back on the field the better will certainly be tested by the Kerry hurlers this Sunday. After their loss to Meath last Sunday they now have to travel to Mullingar to face Westmeath in the Lenister Round Robin tournament. Kerry went down 3-20 to 2-17 to a Meath side that were high on confidence going into the game while Kerry’s loss to Laois might have taken more out of them that was thought. But the loss means it could be ‘last chance saloon’ on Sunday as a return to the Christy Ring would be the case depending on results. But the Kerry hurlers will not be thinking about that. They know that if they win in Mullingar and defeat Laois in Tralee in their final game they will be in a Leinster quarter final. At this level its narrow margins and hopefully the Kingdom’s hurlers can put the last few weeks behind them and take the scalp of the home side. CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW: In the County Senior Club Football Championship First Round both Tralee sides will be disappointed with their performances. The battle of the Black and Amber went the way of Dr Crokes as the All Ireland Club champions saw of Stacks 0-10 to 0-04 in a game that will be quickly forgotten. Stacks attempt to pack their defence certainly didn’t work as they were 0-05 to no score down after 13 minutes and were behind 0-07 to 0-03 at half time. The second period was even more disappointing at the Stacks added only one point while the Crokes hit 3! If Stacks are to feature in the upcoming County Championship they will need a big improvement from this performance. Kerins O’Rahillys went down at home to Kenmare by the narrowest margin 1-13 to 1-14. While the loss was disappointing there was more concern for keeper Gary Kissane who was taken away by ambulance after a head injury sustained in the second half. Thankfully he was conscious by then and we all wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return between the posts. Rahilly led mid-way through the second half before Cassidy scored for Kenmare saw them move into the

40

TRALEE ADVERTISER

lead. Rahillys battled to the end but just could not fashion an equaliser and so bow out. There is on remaining quarter final in the Premier Junior competition with Na Gaeil tipped to see off fellow St Brendan’s District side Churchill. Churchill were a good if surprising winner over Ballydonoghue while the Tralee side got the better of another fancied side in Beaufort. The game sees Na Gaeil at home this Sunday. CAMOGIE GIRLS STRIKE GOLD: The Kerry minor Camogie girls are the latest All Ireland winners in the county as they were crowned champions after winning the u18 Strike for Glory National Competition in Nenagh. They were by far the better team as they defeated Wicklow 5-21 to 1-07. Kerry had the game in control in the first half and were 3-12 to 0-03 ahead by the break and the title was on the way to Kerry. The Kerry captain Aoife O’Connor lifted the trophy to cap a great year for the squad and management team of Owen Lawlor, Joe Walsh, Teresa Reil O’Connor and Fiona Lawlor. Norette Casey was the hero of the day hitting 3-3. Causeway are the Feile Champions for 2017 after the won the A title defeating Cillard. Cillard opened the better and were 2-0 to 0-01 up after 15 minutes. Great credit goes to Causeway as by half time they had turned things around and were leading 3-2 to 3-1. Causeway shut out their opponents in the second half and went on to win 4-7 to 3-1. Grainne Shannahan was named Player of the Match with captains Katelyn Stack and Caitlin Guerin lifting the Feile A Cup. Fixture: The Munster Junior Quarter Final will see Kerry taking on Limerick at the Causeway Pitch on Monday May 1st at 5pm. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,3,9, and 28 and the next jackpot being drawn in O’Dwyers Bar will be e4,800. The Juveniles really enjoyed the visit of neighbours Annascual. In the u6’s Sam Smith was the Player of the Week while after the u8’s Go Games against Annascaul showed the skills of the full panel. The u10’s played the same opposition in their Go Games.

Friday 28th April 2017

In the u12 County League St Pat’s went down 4-06 to 5-19 away to Currow. The u14 defeated Tarbert but were defeated by the host team. The 12’s will also have played in mid-week when they took on Renard. The u12’s had a great day to remember in Croke Park playing three games and getting a guided tour of the Museum. The Minors are into the Division 6 B final after a thrilling 3-16 to 4-10 win over Asdee/Ballylongford. PARNELL’S NEWS: Tralee Parnell’s u14’s made history by becoming the first team from the club to qualify for a Feile County Final. They were excellent in defeating Kilmoyley, South Kerry and Abbeydorney. The squad and management are now planning for the Regional Final on May 1at at 6pm. The Parnell’s u14’s girls wanted to do what the boys did and wrote their own chapter in the clubs history as they won the Camogie Feile B trophy. They are working hard already for their next competition. The u12 Girls had a great day out at the Caman to Croke Park 2017 event. They will long remember their day at GAA HQ in the biannual event and were the only club representing Kerry with 64 clubs present on the day. The U12 Boys won a keenly contested game against Dr Crokes in Killarney with the u16’s played in the Division 2 final also in midweek. They took on Kilmoyley whose goal late in the first half gave them a slight advantage. The North Kerry side opened the lead to 6 points in the second half and held the lead but credit to the Parnells boys who got within a puck of the ball of the title, a great achievement by all the squad and management. Camogie Under 14 Inter-County: Well done Caoimhe, Shona, Saorlaith and Clodagh, who played for Kerry at the inter-county Under 14 Camogie Blitz at Ballyagran in Limerick. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: The club is preparing for the County Championship when the seniors will be at home to South Kerry on May 14th at 2.30pm. Minors: The Minors ended their County League campaign when

defeating the Legion 6-14 to 1-13 and will begin to prepare for the County Championship which will take place in July after the Leaving Cert. Junior Blues : Academy returned today after their Easter break and it was a fun filled morning. Players of the week were : U6 boys : Jamie O’Regan ,U6 girls : Lily Mae Bowler, U8 boys: Barry O’Sullivan and the U8/10 boys: Conor Cronin. The u12 A and B teams had great wins away to Ballydonoghue. The u14’s took part in the Feile Qualifying Group and lost out on in play off competition on scoring difference. Everyone wishes Thomas Maguire a speedy recovery from his hand injury. The Girls are training and playing at all the age groups. Club Lotto: The club lotto of €7,100 was not won on Monday night last from the winning numbers drawn were: 8, 11, 18, and 30. Next week’s jackpot will be €7,200. 4 POINTS IN 2 GAMES SEES 17’S MOVE UP THE TABLE: The Kerry 17’s continued their good form and added a win to their away draw with UCD the week before. Last Sunday it was Cabinteely the visitors to Mouthawk Park but they returned to Dublin pointless as Kerry won 1-0 thanks to a 68th minute goal from Dillon Robinson following good play from Eon Clifford and Martin Coughlin. Kerry are now in mid table ahead of an away trip to Cobh Ramblers on the weekend of May 7th. Now to clear up the controversy that took place just before half time. Cabinteely player Clayton Walsh put the ball into the Kerry net directly from a dropped ball. While the goal was initially given following a consultation between referee Adrian Quirke and assistant Eddie O’Mahony the goal was rightly disallowed. The rule is that ‘if a ball is kicked into the opponent’s goal a goal kick is awarded. Well done to the officials on getting the call right. BOXING THEIR WAY TO THE TOP: Kerry boxing was on a high at the weekend with two boxers winning All Ireland medals. Donnacha Sayers, son of well-known referee Denis, had wins over Olympic BC’s John Donoghue and Arklow’s Damien Aibolga to reach the decider. He went into the Boy2 final against Aidan McSorley of Two Castles Boxing Club determined to make up for losing out in last year’s decider and made no mistake in taking the gold. Aaron McElligott had a great win over Eoin Finglas from Tredagh BC in his Boy 3 semi-final but just lost out to Dillon Maher in the decider. Both boxers will be hopeful for the opportunity to compete in the National Cadet Championships next June. This competition opens new doors, including the European Schoolboy Championships in July. The duo are coached at Cashen Vale Boxing Club by veteran trainer Patrick O Brien.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Sean Walsh from Trojan Boxing Club won his first bout on a TKO – technical knock-out and went on to defeat John Ward Brosnan in his final. Two other young Kerry fighters will have gained valuable experience despite losing. Charlie Fitzgerald and Jordan Goggin are only boxing 2 months and both gave very good displays before going down to split decision losses to fighters that went on to win All Ireland titles. Chris Mongan from Tralee Boxing Club lost out on a unanimous decision but his display probably deserved more. SO NEAR FOR TRALEE RIDERS IN JOHN DRUMM CLASSIC: One of the most prestigious cycle races in the country, the John Drumm Cup, was raced for for the 52nd time in Currow last Sunday. And for much of the race it looked like the Cup would be residing in Tralee with Sean Lacey, of the Aqua Blue Team and Cathal Moynihan from Tralee Manor West iBike in the vanguard for most of the race. However it was Lacey’s teammate Mark O’Callaghan that jumped across to join the Tralee duo and Banteer’s Paidi O’Brien and the Limerick rider took the win in a sprint finish. In the A3 category Oisin Smailes, Tralee Manor West iBike was just beaten on the line by Cork’s Ronan Twomey while his club mates David Fitzgerald was 6th and John O’Connell 11th. In the A4 race the Chain Gang’s Michael O’Sullivan took 7th. Tralee Manor West iBike ladies took two of the top three places with Ciara Tierney taking the win and Suzanne O’Sullivan 3rd. In the underage races Kingsdom CC’s Adam Lenihan was 10th in the hotly contested u14 race while Kieran Coggins took 4th in the u16 competition and his fellow Tralee Manor West iBike rider Eoin Moloney took 9th. Many of these riders will be in action in Kanturk this weekend while the much anticipated Clubs of Kerry Summer League begins on May 4th with the first round in Killorglin starting at 7pm. TOUR DE MUNSTER 2017 PARTNERSHIP SPIN AND CHARITY PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT AT BALLYSEEDY HOME & GARDEN CENTRE: Details of the charity partnership, that sees the 17th annual Tour De Munster Charity Cycle once again “share the journey” with Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) Munster Branches, were officially announced on Saturday, April 22nd at a Family Fun Day at Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre in Tralee, held in association with the Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland, and attended by cyclists, friends and families connected to DSI. This will be the 8th successive year that the national charity has been the beneficiary of popular 600km cycle around the six counties of Munster, which this year takes place from Thursday 10th – Sunday

13th of August. Since its inception in 2001, Tour de Munster has raised over €2.4 million for its beneficiaries, with over €1.9 million for DSI alone, with a staggering €285,655 raised in 2016. All cyclists cover their own expenses. This year’s Tour de Munster begins on Thursday, August 10th in Cork City and continues over four days around the six counties of Munster until it culminates back in Cork on Sunday, August 13th. Cycling legend, Sean Kelly, who is an avid supporter of Tour de Munster, will once again cycle with the group for the full four days of the Tour. TRACK AND FIELD ROUND-UP: Tralee Harriers Ladies had a good day at the Munster Junior and u23 Championships in Waterford with Rachel Bowler taking bronze in the triple jump, Aoibheann O’Brien also won bronze in the long jump while Aoife O’Carroll was also third in the 100m. Orla O’Reilly joined the trio in the 4 x100m relay and yes you guessed it they finished 3rd!! In the u23’s Harriers Solange Diego won gold in the triple jump. The clubs also had winners at underage levels with Jordan Kissane winning gold at u15’s and Cillian Griffin silver in the u16’s multi event competitions. After the Kerry Athletics County Masters Track and Field championships Tralee Harriers toped the points table for the Junior Men’s while St Brendan’s won in the Senior Women’s section. HOWZAT! CRICKET NEWS: North Kerry lost to Cork Harlequins by 51 runs in a Division 2 match played at Tralee’s Oyster Tavern. Cork batted first and only Dave Peet (30) mastered the bowling. The North Kerry bowlers struggled with their accuracy conceding lots of wides. Eddie Garczynski took 3 for 34 and Paul Wyre 2 for 24.The fielding showed commitment as the bruises of Paul Swaine and Matthew Pickett will testify. In response North Kerry batsmen struggled and amassed only 85 runs. Pick of the Harlequins bowlers being John Russell with 5 for 9. County Kerry were in Galway in the Premier Division but it was the Tribesmen that took the honours reaching 173 from 6 for the win. South Kerry Thirds got off to a winning start defeating Limerick 2 at Adare.
