BROGUE LINES UP ANOTHER”ABSOLUTE 80’S NIGHT “ WITH CHRIS SHORTT NEXT WEEKEND

TRALEE IN HEADLINES THIS WEEK!
After a great response to the previous “ABSOLUTE 8O’S NIGHTS in the Brogue , Saturday the 21st May , its going to happen again !! Yes , the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “ Absolute Eighties” session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .”We wanted to try something a little bit different , as we are now having entertainment up to 7 nights a week in the Brogue “ says Fiona Kirby .So Chris came up with the idea of an “Absolute 80’s Night “ which we thought was brilliant . According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 80’s ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with the music of the 80’s , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into that decade of Music ....we are talking Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba , the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac . Chris really knows his music , he has been the Rose Ball DJ for many many years now “ says Kevin Cotter .from the Brogue ..”.it only makes sense to have someone who knows the 80’s music back to front entertaining our customers rather than having someone working from a Playlist!” Hopefully AGAIN on the night , we will find other people who know their music as the Brogue have some lovely tasty prizes from Cobblers Restaurant , and their Piano Bar upstairs as well as from the Carvery downstairs “ So remember Saturday the 21st May is “ABSOLUTE 80’S NIGHT with Chris Shortt in the Brogue

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Bernard sold a faulty laptop to Cathal. What legal action can Cathal take?
The Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 protects consumer’s rights. It consists of four conditions : That goods must 1) be of merchantable quality which initially means that they do what they are supposed to do and are up to acceptable standards. 2) The goods must be fit for the purpose intended 3) as described: If the laptop was advertised as a laptop with certain beneficial qualities then it must have those qualities 4) they must correspond with the sample if items are bought on the basis of a sample, for example a paint colour must match the sample given. Six months after the purchase of the laptop and if it turns out to be faulty it can be said that it was initially faulty at the time of purchase .If it did not satisfy any of the conditions in the previous paragraph, consumers are entitled to either of the following categories of redress: a refund, a replacement or the repair of the faulty good. Signs stating “Goods cannot be exchanged or refunded “ or “only credit notes on goods returns” do not affect these rights. In relation to services under the 1980 Act the service must be carried out with due care and must have the necessary skills or qualifications for the service .The service givers must use goods and materials that are of merchantable quality to carry out the job. For example hairdressers must use suitable scissors and painters must use paint of merchantable quality. Lawquip: Driver has either to drink, or to drive. There is no third way! DEPUTY JOHN BRASSIL
Deputy John Brassil welcomed his meeting with native Kerryman and head of the IDA, Martin Shanahan and said “the meeting was very constructive and positive and I look forward to working with Mr Shanahan into the future to drive on projects that will bring high skilled jobs to the County”. The pair discussed the progress of the Advanced Manufacturing Facility at Kerry Technology Park where construction works are due to commence in July. The Advanced Manufacturing Facility, which Deputy Brassil has been involved with for a number of years now, has the potential to attract a variety of industry but a key focus will be on high end bio-pharmaceutical jobs. Deputy Brassil said “I am confident that because the IDA have made the investment in the facility they now have vested interest to deliver on bringing business to it and in turn focus on delivering highly skilled jobs for Tralee.”
CELEBRATION OF PASTORAL AND YOUTH MINISTERS
On Tuesday May 17th, the Diocese of Kerry will acknowledge and celebrate 15 youth ministers who have just completed the Diocesan Course in Youth Ministry. They will be celebrated alongside 33 people from 7 parishes who have just completed a 20 week Diocesan Course in Pastoral Ministry which enabled them to deepen their understanding and knowledge of their faith and ministry. Bishop Ray will be presenting all 48 ministers with their individual certificates, acknowledging their commitment to their own learning, and also their commitment to the parishes and people with whom they minister. As parishes desire to be places of living faith, there is a need to nurture the personal and spiritual growth of leaders for ministry in today’s Church. The aim of the course is to support all those who are involved in parish life, and to enable them to share their talents and gifts more effectively. The Course in Pastoral Ministry will take place next year over 8 Saturdays in Kenmare Pastoral Area. For further information, contact Frances Rowland @064 6630538 or francesrowland@dioceseofkerry. ie For parishes wishing to reach out and engage with young people, there is a need for trained adult leaders, who can nurture caring, supportive relationships where young people experience the Good News. Youth Ministry is the response of the Christian community to the needs of young people, and the sharing of the unique gifts of youth with the larger community. The Course in Youth Ministry will equip leaders to reach out and undertake this key role with young people. Darren Andis Jones visits The Barber In this week’s slot we are going to talk about a very special visit we had from world famous barber, Darren Andis Jones. Darren began his career in cosmetology for men but found his way into barbering, and has since become an educator and inspiration to barbers worldwide. At The Barbers we had the pleasure of hosting Darren and The Great British Barber Bash in our shop on Ashe Street. There was a morning and evening session. The morning session was compiled of a 2 to 3 hour educating session. Darren demonstrated a skin fade. This is one of the most popular haircuts at the moment and they take a lot of time to do. At The Barber we are constantly up skilling and re-educating ourselves. We want to be able to provide all our customers with the most modern and well presented haircuts possible. The evening session was a hands on practical. Darren gave one on one knowledge to each barber who took part. He did not just educate us on skin fades however; he gave us tips on scissor and razor use and even equipment hygiene, which we pride ourselves on. The whole experience was amazing and each one of us took something from it. We do these training days to keep, you the customer looking your best. Having a world renowned barber teaching us was a major bonus. We will be having many more educating days from other famous barbers in the shop in the near future. In the mean time we will be travelling to other shops across the country to gain more knowledge. So next time you call in ask us what we learned and see if we can apply it to you.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...
WOMEN OF KERRY - CYSTIC FIBROSIS IRELAND WANTS YOU!
With the deadline just days away to sign up for this year’s VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon on Monday June 6, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is making a final appeal to the women of KERRY to sign up today and help raise much-needed funds for the charity. As part of its “One in 1,000” appeal, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, the national charity supporting people with cystic fibrosis and their families, is hoping to recruit 1,000 women and become one of the biggest charity contingents to take part in this year’s event. A really fun day out, it’s open to all levels of fitness and participants can run, jog or walk—it’s the taking part that counts! Women interested in joining in can sign up at www.cfireland.ie to obtain a fundraising pack, as well as receive on-the-day support, including en-route refreshments, and entertainment at the Cystic Fibrosis Ireland après-party. Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is hoping to raise €100,000 for vital cystic fibrosis services, including the funding of dedicated state-of-the-art cystic fibrosis facilities in our hospitals and grants for exercise equipment, fertility treatment, transplant assessment, counselling and bereavement support. There are around 1,200 people with cystic fibrosis in Ireland, and the country has the highest rate per head of population in the world, with an average of 30 new cases diagnosed each year. In addition, Ireland has among the most severe manifestations of cystic fibrosis because of the particular genotype prevalent here. As a long-standing supporter of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and participant in the women’s minimarathon, Nuala Carey knows the sun will come out this June 6: “I am very familiar with cystic fibrosis as a friend had it when I was in college and I also have a relative whose son was born with it. You can see how the disease really impacts people’s lives in terms of managing it, avoiding infection and making GP and hospital visits. So that’s why I think it is important for me to take part in the One in 1,000 campaign and this will be my fifth year to take part for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Ten kilometres is not a lot when running with thousands of others. The atmosphere is electric, there is a really great team spirit and people carry each other along on the crest of a wave. Women are not just doing it for themselves, but for cystic fibrosis, and that’s the difference. Plus, it’s not about being first past the finish line. Everyone gets a medal! And I can forecast that the sun will definitely shine—in our hearts at least! C’mon girls, let’s get our game on— will you join me and be that One in 1,000?” Regular mountain-climber and hiker, and former model and dancer, Emma Quinlan has the following tips for women taking part: “First, ease in—start slowly, run 500 metres, then walk 500 metres, and build things up gradually. Remember it’s not a race. It’s about finishing, not winning. The only battle you are having is with yourself. Second, bring a buddy—you can shoot the breeze together and lend each other support. If one of you slows down, the other is there to encourage you along. Finally, third, keep focused on your goal—taking part in “One in 1,000” is not about being the fittest kid on the block. It’s about raising awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis. Anything else is a bonus!” For more information, visit www.cfireland.ie, telephone LoCall 1890 311 211 or email fundraising@ cfireland.ie.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... INTEREST RATES FOR SAVERS ARE AT AN ALL-TIME LOW, WITH MANY PEOPLE LOOKING AT ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS THAT MAY BE AVAILABLE FOR THEIR MONEY. EOGHAN HORGAN FROM EHF MARKETS TRALEE ANSWERS SOME TOPICAL QUESTIONS. Q; Why are interest rates so low currently for savers? A: Interest rates have been falling for a number of years now and in March this year the European Central Bank (ECB) cut its main interest rate to zero. The knock on effect of this was further cuts in interest rates offered to savers, with many deposit rates now close to zero. Low interest rates combined with a DIRT (deposit interest retention tax) rate increase from 20% to 41% in the last number of years, means that returns on deposits are negligible. In addition, with the rate of inflation increasing, it will be difficult for savers to maintain the value of their deposits. Many deposit holders are now looking at what suitable investment alternatives are available to them to protect and grow the value of their monies on deposit. Q; I have savings of €50,000 in which I have available to invest, what investment products are available to me?
Disappointed with the performance of your savings and investments?
A; Over the long term, investing money will deliver greater returns than savings deposit accounts. Your attitude to risk is an important consideration as well as the length of time you are prepared to invest and what your individual investment goals are. A financial broker would work with you to devise a plan which identifies which financial products best meet your financial needs and objectives, while also taking account of your personal risk assessment, financial resources, time horizon and requirements for accessibility. Your broker can compare and contrast the characteristics of the range of financial products available in the market and also explain how likely a financial product is to achieve a specified financial need or objective. Two examples are the Triple Star Funds Bond which is a capital protected product from Wealth Options or the AIMS Target Return Fund which is an investment fund available from Aviva.
If yes,
EHF Markets has savings / investment products that could be just right for you.

JACK KENNEDY IS THE RADIO KERRY & RANDLES BROS KERRY SPORTS STAR OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL 17 year old Jockey Jack Kennedy, who hails from Dingle, is the Radio Kerry and Randles Bros Sport Star of the month for April. Jack will be Weeshie’s guest on Terrace Talk in the coming weeks. He was crowned Champion Jockey three times, won the most famous race The Dingle Derby and recorded over 200 winners on the circuit. It is from here that Johnny Murtagh, Paul Townend and fellow Kerry jockey’s Oisin Murphy and Bryan Cooper also graduated. Jack started out in pony racing alongside his brothers Mikey and Patrick. He began riding professionally for Gordon Elliott in mid -2015 and was soon winning races on the flat and over jumps. He made his Cheltenham debut this year and says to ride a winner at the Festival is his next ambition. He was crowned Irish Conditional Champion Jockey at Punchestown earlier this month, just a week after turning 17. He rode his first winner over fences in Navan last November on the JP McManus owned Riverside City, trained by Elliott. This was the middle leg of an amazing treble on the day. In all, Jack Kennedy rode 44 winners during the season.
The Sports Awards panel also paid credit to the two other nominees for April – Monika Dukarska who won her 4th Women’s University Senior Single Sculls title and Hogan Cup All Ireland Winners, St Brendan’s College, Killarney The Radio Kerry Sports Awards have been running since 2014 with the support of sponsor Randles Bros, main Nissan dealers for Kerry located at Manor West, Tralee and Muckross Road, Killarney. For 2016/17 the monthly award nominees will be chosen by a panel, chaired by Radio Kerry’s Weeshie Fogarty with listeners and social media followers then being invited to vote for the shortlisted sports award nominees monthly. The nominees for May will be announced on Monday May 30th and the winner. Following one week of public voting the winner will be announced on Monday June 6th. 18

CASTLEISLAND STUDENTS “BANK” ON MEETING GAA AND RUGBY LEGENDS AFTER WINNING SCHOOLS COMPETITION
SECONDARY students in Castleisland were collectively star-struck after meeting GAA living legends Killian Young, Henry Shefflin, Liam Sheedy and Aidan Walsh at a special event at Presentation Secondary School in the town. The men, who have numerous All-Ireland and Provincial Football and Hurling Medals between them, visited the school after winning the Bank of Ireland “Meet Our Legends” competition. School Principal, Katherina Broderick, said “This is a huge honour for the school and we are delighted to welcome these true sporting legends to Presentation Castleisland. I want to pay tribute to Pierce Dargan and the students who led this initiative to promote a savings culture in the school. The atmosphere is one of celebration today as we are delighted to have such distinguished sports people share their experience and expertise with the whole school community”. The “Meet Our Legends” prize was awarded after Presentation School Bank, in partnership with Bank of Ireland, was adjudged to have opened the most secondlevel accounts per student ratio and the greatest demonstration of saving in the South West region. The initiative, which was led by Business Teacher, Pierce Dargan, required students wishing to take up roles as bank officials to submit CVs and attend for interview. The successful students were given a training day in the school with a Bank of Ireland official. A massive effort was put in all year with the school bank, which was run every Tuesday lunchtime by five fifth year students. By getting over 65% of the school body to open accounts, they received the news that they had been triumphant in winning the overall prize. The ‘Meet Our Legends’ event took place in the school on Thursday 12th May from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm when the students were given a skills masterclass from Killian Young (Kerry Senior Footballer) & Aidan Walsh (Cork Senior Hurler & Footballer). The Masterclass was followed by a motivational talk from Henry Shefflin (10 times All-Ireland Hurling winner with Kilkenny) & Liam Sheedy (All-Ireland winning Hurling Manager with Tipperary). Members of the Munster Rugby team were also in attendance as part of the overall prize, signing autographs and posing for photos with all present.

ROSE OF TRALEE FESTIVAL HAS SPARKLING FUTURE AS TIPPERARY CRYSTAL IS UNVEILED AS NEW LEAD SPONSOR A SPARKLING future lies ahead for the Rose of Tralee International Festival after the Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan and RTÉ Presenter, Dáithí Ó Sé unveiled premium Irish giftware brand, Tipperary Crystal as the new lead sponsor. The announcement at the Tipperary Crystal Showroom at Arnotts Department Store, Dublin came ahead of this year’s extended and bigger than ever Rose of Tralee International Festival from 17-23 August. Dáithí Ó Sé presented Elysha Brennan with her new Rose of Tralee sash bearing the Tipperary Crystal brand but the public will have to wait until Tuesday 23rd August to see the new Tiara, created by Tipperary Crystal, which will be presented to the 2016 Rose of Tralee in the Festival Dome live on RTÉ One television. The Executive Chair of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said: “We are proud to run a great international festival. It is unique and it has stood the test of time. The Rose of Tralee is one of the strongest and most iconic brands that we have in Ireland. Sustaining and growing that brand requires passion, commitment, creativity plenty of hard work and a commitment to excellence. We are delighted to team-up with Tipperary Crystal who we believe will be a strong partner for the Festival going forward. When the Roses wear the exquisite jewellery pieces that Tipperary Crystal have designed for over five hours of live TV in August they will herald a new order in jewellery and giftware retail sales in the Irish market.” The Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, Robbie Scanlan, said: “Tipperary Crystal and the Rose of Tralee are two iconic Irish brands that both have a real and tangible sense of modern Ireland. Tipperary Crystal has evolved into a contemporary giftware company that reflects the Ireland of today and now has the perfect vehicle through the Rose of Tralee to showcase the Tipperary Crystal Jewellery collection. There is just such a fantastic fit between the two brands.” Arnotts Department Store has been a great partner to Tipperary Crystal over the years and this historic location was chosen as the venue to let the country know of the new partnership between Tipperary Crystal and Rose of Tralee. The Commercial Manager of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Steve Cronly, said: “Sponsorship at all levels plays a key role in the ongoing success of our event. We are delighted to welcome on board all our new and returning sponsors who continue to enjoy the benefits of being associated with Ireland’s flagship festival.” This year’s extended Rose of Tralee Festival will run for seven days from 17-23 August and tickets to all Dome and Street events are now available from www.RoseofTralee.ie. In addition to the brand new Tipperary Crystal tiara, which will first be revealed on RTÉ One, the 2016 Rose of Tralee will receive a complete collection of Tipperary Crystal jewellery and a newly designed and created Rose of Tralee Perpetual Trophy. For more information, please contact the Festival Office on +353 66 721322.
IRELAND’S YOUNGEST ENTREPRENEURS SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS Thousands of Primary School Children participating on Junior Entrepreneur Programme Present their Produce and Profits at Showcase Days Kerry, 12 May 2016: More than one thousand primary school pupils in Kerry today (Thursday) kicked off a nationwide showcase of junior entrepreneurship. In the coming weeks, over 10,000 children, aged from 9 to 11 years old, will be presenting the businesses they have created and managed through the Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP). JEP is the only programme in Ireland geared towards primary school children, and it is a vital part of any school curriculum, building skills as well as confidence. Founded by Jerry Kennelly of Tweak.com, JEP brings entrepreneurship into primary schools and helps students develop existing skills such as literacy and numeracy but also new skills such as problem solving, technology, communication, team building, confidence and creative thinking. Jerry Kennelly said the standard of projects and the skills of the students involved continues to amaze each year; “These 11 and 12-year-old business people are just as enthusiastic and capable as more seasoned business people and I’d be very confident for Ireland’s future under their watch”. The programme is available nationally, is free for schools, parents and children thanks to the support of entrepreneurs in each region. Applications to participate in the Junior Entrepreneurship Programme next year (2016/2017) are available online by visiting www.juniorentrepreneur.ie.

Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week. Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week. This week I asked on my Snapchat (@bexblah) what you wanted to see, and my most requested was a post on My Favourite Makeup Brushes & Tools. So that’s what I’m gonna do. If you have any requests or suggestions on anything that you want to see you can add me on snapchat, message me on my Facebook, or email me at bexblahbeauty@gmail.com. I’m all about what you want to see so if there’s any products you want my thoughts on etc let me know. MAKEUP BRUSHES & TOOLS When I started doing my own makeup I literally used my fingers to apply foundation and eyeshadow for a good while, I couldn’t even imagine doing that now. Insane. Today I’m going to talk all about my favourite makeup tools and brands that I recommend. • THE BEAUTY BLENDER – If you
haven’t applied your makeup with a beauty blender, you are seriously missing out. SERIOUSLY. And I’m not talking about the brands that made dupes of the beauty blender, I’m talking about The Original Beauty Blender! It gives your makeup an amazing flawless finish, it can be used for foundation,
concealer, cream contour, or even to blend powder bronzer. All you have to do is squeeze it in water to dampen it and then bounce it on your face to apply whichever product. You can get it on BeautyBay for €20 with free delivery. • Morphe M439 – I got this brush recently after I saw Jaclyn Hill and Manny Mua rave sooooo much about it. Again, it is used to apply foundation to the face, it is very dense which means it gives great coverage and also doesn’t store lots of product. So if you’re a bit apprehensive about the beauty blender and are looking for an amazing foundation brush, this is for you! I actually have two of them, one for my own personal use and one for my makeup kit for clients. • Blank Canvas E40/41 Double Ended Brush – I’m an OG Blank Canvas Cosmetics fan, I have been talking about and using their products since the beginning. If you’re really confused when it comes to eye makeup brushes, this brush is all you need. Literally. Use the flat side to pack on eyeshadow and the fluffy side to blend, I have like 3 of these brushes, they are so handy and fantastic quality! And it’s only €12, so you’re basically getting two brushes for that. BARGAIN.
• EcoTools Angled Face Brush – I use this, and only this, for my bronzer absolutely errrrryday, or every time I wear makeup at least. I don’t have many EcoTools brushes, but I must get more because they are such great quality. Like I’ve had that bronzer brush at least 2 years now and it’s still perfect. EcoTools is also Vegan friendly, which is awesome. • Anastasia Beverly Hills Duo Sided Brow Brush – You all know that ABH is my brow brand, I use nothing else on them. I only got this brush when I was in Toronto in January because I lost my other one but now it’s all I use. The spoolie/ brush side is used to comb through the brows and the angled side is the perfect size to apply product with precision. You can get one on BeautyBay for €17.40. So those are my absolute favourite brushes/tools. I have multiples of all of them and simply couldn’t do my makeup without them. As for brands, if you go for EcoTools, Blank Canvas Cosmetics, Morphe or Real Techniques you’ll be safe. You don’t have to get the most expensive brushes out there for them to be good, all of the brands and brushes I mentioned are mostly under €20.
Stay Gorge,
Bexblah. Attention BexBlah Readers!

FLIP FLOP SEASON IS HERE! How a MEDIPEDI Treatment is performed DMK's MEDIPEDI procedure is a one hour treatment designed to give you excellent results. First, we assess the feet and establish problem areas by looking for thickened areas on your feet, toes and tops of the feet. We also look for bubbling skin or cracked areas. Some extreme calloused skin conditions may require more than one treatment to remove everything. Special ingredients used in the MEDIPEDI products are designed to sink deeply into dead cell layers of skin where they move away heavy cell build-up. Usually dead thickened skin on the feet has a dull yellow or white appearance. When revised, your skin will be restored to a fresh, pink colour and the skin will feel slippery. MEDIPEDI is a totally non-invasive treatment that does not require the use of acids, harsh chemicals and other solvents nor does it rely upon heavy rasping, cutting or other mechanical methods of removing the build-up of hardened, dead skin.
DMK's MEDIPEDI foot treatment works to: • Rough, dry skin build-up • Remove callouses and hardened, yellow skin • Revise dark, pigmented areas • Remove painful corns • Revise cracked heels leaving your skin soft and smooth
Book your Medi Pedi today and receive “FREE” Nail Shape & Paint ONLY €45 *Offer ends 31 May st

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS. I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK.
This week I’m going to just give you all a little update on how I have been doing. So, if you read this page often you will know I started weighing myself daily towards the end of March. Why? Because I felt I wasn’t accountable, I felt by not weighing myself I was just avoiding something. I have my own personal goals in my head, and to reach them the most effectively, I felt I should weigh myself daily. So, since starting on the 29th of March, I have lost 13 pounds/basically a stone/5.8kg. From the 29th of March to the 12th of May, 13 pounds. 6 weeks, 13 pounds. Just over 2 pounds a week. And I’m delighted. Obviously, simply weighing myself daily didn’t make me lose weight. I have been in the gym 5/6 days a week as well as making a conscious effort to eat healthy food. And it’s not all a numbers game, the weighing scales can be misleading and a lot of other factors come into play such as your gender, height, measurements, body fat % etc. I actually got a body fat test done at the beginning of April and I am getting another one next week, so I will let you all know how that goes. I just think, by knowing that I have to weigh myself every morning, I have made better choices. If I want to eat bad in the evening, it’s in my head that I will be weighing myself the next morning, so it just helps. Also, I will not share my actual weight on this because 1. It’s my own personal business. 2. No one is defined by how much they weigh, it’s just a number, no one but you can see it. 3. Weight looks completely different on different people, so I think it’s misleading. Yeah I do have an ‘ideal weight’ in my head, but I don’t really know what I will look that at that weight. So for me it’s more how I feel, how I look and when I’m happy. I want you all to know I DID NOT cut Carbs, Fat or anything like that the past 6 weeks. I ate bagel slims, wraps, white potatoes, rice, avocado, smoked salmon, feta cheese and lots more. I DID NOT run on a treadmill for hours on end, I weight trained and did some uphill high intensity walking(sometimes sprints). I DID NOT cut out all bad food and alcohol completely. I went out both bank holiday weekends and I celebrated my 22nd birthday during the last 6 weeks. I had a dominos cheat meal, one or two meals out with friends and little treats along the way, probably once a week. But everything was monitored. If I was drinking, I would mix my alcohol of choice with coke zero. After a night out or cheat meal, I just went back to eating healthy. And no matter what, I weighed myself every day. So what I’m saying is, if you want to lose bodyfat/get stronger/become healthier/be more fit, you can, and you don’t have to train 7 days a week and eat chicken broccoli and brown rice all day. It’s all about balance control and knowing what’s right for you. You won’t feel motivated all the time and you might struggle, but no one ever regrets exercise after they have done it, ever.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016 With the end of spring comes the end of wild garlic. It is now your last chance to pick some as once the flowers are gone it is no longer useable. Wild garlic is all over Ballyseedy woods and is easily found. It is very tasty it does not have the same strong taste as the garlic you buy, and the leaves can be eaten in a salad raw. It goes very well in pasta dishes just add at the last minute. It makes a great pesto or flavoured butter which freezes very well. Wild garlic flowers are beautiful pickled in salads, on vegetables as a garnish, with a punch of flavour and they last for ages in the press for later in the year.
ROASTED CHICKEN WITH LEMON, WILD GARLIC, AND GREEN OLIVES
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •
4 tablespoons olive oil 1 lemon, thinly sliced, seeds discarded 2 chickens (about 3 pounds each), quartered, or 4 bone-in, skin-on legs (drumsticks and thighs) and 4 bone-in, skin-on breasts sea salt and freshly ground pepper 1 large bunch wild garlic or scallions, trimmed and halved lengthwise 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 3 shallots, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 1/3 cup pitted mild green olives, quartered lengthwise 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 1/2 cup dry white wine Fresh parsley leaves (for serving)
METHOD 1. 2. 3. 4.
Preheat oven to 180c. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high. Fry lemon slices until just beginning to brown, 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a plate and reserve oil in pan. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Return pan to medium-high heat. Working in batches to avoid crowding the pan, cook chicken, without turning, until skin is nicely browned and crisped, 7-8 minutes per batch. Transfer chicken, skin-side up, to a large roasting pan; repeat with remaining chicken. Reserve pan (do not wash). Arrange reserved lemon slices and wild garlic around chicken pieces. Transfer roasting pan to oven and cook until chicken is cooked through (it should reach an internal temperature of 76°c), 25-30 minutes. Transfer chicken, lemon slices, and wild garlic to a serving platter, reserving pan juices. Heat reserved pan over medium; add garlic and shallots and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add olives and thyme and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add wine and cook, stirring, until reduced by about half, 2-3 minutes. Using a spoon, transfer chicken juices from roasting pan to pan and cook until thickened, 3-5 minutes; Recipes by season with salt and pepper. Spoon sauce around chicken and garnish with fresh parsley.

HEALTHY JOINTS
Increasing age, injury, wear and tear, even sitting the wrong way, or carrying excess weight can wear and tear cartilage. This can lead to a reaction that can damage your joints and may lead to arthritis. The best way to take care of your joints is to keep them, your muscles, your ligaments, and bones strong and stable. Over time even normal healthy joints deteriorate. It is important to take care of your body and protect your joints to maximise their use, mobility and function for now and for the future; and also limit the amount of pain and discomfort you may experience.
Aim for a diet high in fruit, veg, fish and nuts; limit red meats and sugars to help prevent arthritis and manage inflammation and pain
Some tips you may find helpful are: Maintain a healthy weight for healthy joints – weight bearing joints, such as knees, hips and back support some if not all of your body weight. The more weight you carry, the more wear and tear your joints suffer. Research shows with every extra pound you gain, you put four times more stress on the knees. Exercise for healthy joints – exercise will help you lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight. If your joints bother you then opt for low-impact exercises, such as swimming and cycling Don’t sit still – less movement means more stiffness in your joints, so get up and get moving. Take frequent breaks during the day and stretch or go for a short walk, or at least get up and walk about while stretching Build muscles – strong muscles support your joints. If you don’t have enough muscle, your joints take a pounding, especially your spine, hips and knees. Which, remember, supports your entire body weight. Always seek professional advice before starting any exercise routine, as doing exercises incorrectly increases the chance of injury. Any joint pain, such as stiffness, tenderness or swelling should always be seen by a GP who can determine a cause and advise you on what action you need to take. Some of the natural remedies available in-store include: Cherry Active Caps/Juice: may help reduce inflammation and ease the pain of arthritis and osteoarthritis. Very effective in dealing with symptoms of gout, as it lowers the blood levels of uric acid which are associated with the onset and progression of gout. Nature’s Aid Ginger, Turmeric & Bromelain: A very effective Anti-Inflammatory where joint pain is present. Zincuflex: a unique antioxidant formula containing curcumin, ginger and vitamin C, designed specifically to help relieve pain and inflammation. Omega3 Oils: like hinges on doors, all your joints need lubrication to allow ease of movement. The omega 3 oils also help to keep inflammation at bay, such as Udo’s Oil, Eskimo Oil Brainsharp (which also includes vitamin D for healthy bones) and Krill Oil, are some of our recommendations Gluco Chondro Complex: a blend of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, helps in the rebuilding of joint cartilage and reduce painful inflammation associated with physical activity. If you struggle with joint pain these nutrients offer natural comfort All of these supplements will help with knee pain, hip discomfort, elbow or finger joint pain or any other related joint/cartilage pain, induced by exercise, injury or wear and tear.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... THE KERRY CAMINO
The Kerry Camino annual 3-day walk of the Dingle Way, Tralee to Dingle, took place on the May Bank Holiday Weekend (29th April – 2nd May.) This year’s event had the assistance of Caminoways.com in promoting this year’s walk weekend (those familiar with Kerry Camino and walking events might recall that their new website www.caminoways.com was launched at Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre in April 2015.) Proceedings got underway on Friday evening with an Information and Registration session at The Grand Hotel, Denny Street, Tralee. A photographic slide show was on display to give participants a taste for what was to be seen on the route over the weekend. Some of our participants this year had travelled long distances to walk the Kerry Camino - Scotland, England, a few from Europe, and from all parts of Ireland. A group of 185 pilgrims with Kerry Camino walk guides gathered at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Church, Castle Street and following a blessing from Very Rev. Fr. Sean Hanafin, Parish Priest of St. Johns, the walkers set off on the first day’s walk “following in the footsteps of St. Brendan,” with the route taking them along the Canal Bank to Blennerville, Tonevane and across the scenic slopes of the Sliabh Mish Mountains (Curraheen/Derrymore, Killelton) to Camp. Having experienced both sunshine and showers along the way, the tea and sandwiches prepared for the walkers by Mike and Anne O’Neill at the Railway Tavern were well received. Most participants availed of the buses provided by Kerry Camino to return to Tralee for the night, others had booked accommodation in the Camp area. Sunday morning began for most in Tralee with bus transport to Camp, numbers having increased to 200, setting off from the Railway Tavern in overcast and misty conditions at 9 a.m. for Annascaul, with a brief stop at Inch Beach on the way. A BBQ was enjoyed by all at Hanafin’s Bar on arrival in Annascaul. Again, some pilgrims chose to avail of local accommodation and others coming back to Tralee for the night. Monday morning’s group travelled again on buses to Annascaul and 180 pilgrims set off from The South Pole Inn for Dingle. Conditions were favourable for this last stage of the Kerry Camino, taking in Minard and Lispole and along the mountain path to the Church of St. James in Dingle. Over the 3 days, pilgrim’s passports were stamped at stations along the route and Certificates were presented to all the walkers on arrival at St. James Church. Some participants stayed on in the Dingle area but most returned to Tralee, tired but with a sense of achievement and hopefully with happy memories and new friendships made on the Kerry Camino. The weekend would not have been possible without the help of many volunteers, with particular thanks to members of Tralee Mountaineering Club who acted as walk guides over the 3 days. Since Kerry Camino was launched in 2012, numbers participating have increased every year bringing new and welcome walking tourism business to the greater Tralee area. Further information on Kerry Camino can be found on the website and Facebook page, or by sending an email to us. We are a small, Tralee based volunteer group and we welcome anyone interested in joining us for our meetings and events to promote walking tourism in the Tralee area. For anyone who would like to walk the Kerry Camino themselves, or a section of it at a time, passports are available at Tralee’s Tourist Office at the Ashe Memorial Hall. Kerry Camino Certificates can be collected on completion of the walk from Dingle Tourist Office. LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! THREE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS SIGN UP FOR THE ARMY
And it’s their first day, time for assignments. The drill Sergeant asks the first one. “WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?” “I like to go sailing!” he replied. “OK, YOU ARE NOW IN CHARGE OF BOATS!” The second friend stood up for his turn, and was asked the same question. “I like to fly...” “OK YOU ARE NOW IN CHARGE OF OUR PLANES!” The third friend came up and was once again asked what he liked to do. However, he had a stutter so all he could say was “I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I”... The drill sergeant looks at him and replies, “OK, YOU ARE NOW IN CHARGE OF THE MACHINE GUNS!”
KING OF THE JUNGLE
A lion woke up one morning feeling really rowdy and mean. He went out and cornered a small monkey and roared, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?” The trembling monkey says, “You are, mighty lion! Later, the lion confronts a ox and fiercely bellows, “Who is the mightiest of all jungle animals?” The terrified ox stammers, “Oh great lion, you are the mightiest animal in the jungle!” On a roll now, the lion swaggers up to an elephant and roars, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?” Fast as lightning, the elephant snatches up the lion with his trunk, slams him against a tree half a dozen times leaving the lion feeling like it’d been run over by a safari wagon. The elephant then stomps on the lion till it looks like a corn tortilla and ambles away. The lion lets out a moan of pain, lifts his head weakly and hollers after the elephant - “Just because you don’t know the answer, you don’t have to get so upset about it!”

CURE FOR A BAD TEMPER.
A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband ‘s temper. The Doctor asks: “What’s the problem? The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.” The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick”.
AND NOW A JOKE FROM OUR READERS... THIS WEEK IS FROM PAT HUSSEY NEW HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER
After retiring, a former Gunnery Sergeant in the Canadian Army took a new job as a high school teacher. Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a light plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn’t noticeable when he wore his suit coat. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart-ass punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former soldier, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. With a strong breeze blowing it made his tie flap. He picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... PRESENTATION PRIMARY SCHOOL MAKE THE “SONG FOR ‘16 ALL IRELAND FINALS”
As part of its 2016 Centenary Programme, the National Concert Hall in conjunction with Disney Music Group and the Department of Education and Skills will host Song for ‘16, an all-island schools song competition. A concert presenting the shortlisted finalists will take place on Sunday 15th May at the National Concert Hall where students from all over Ireland will perform their shortlisted entry. The competition will provide a prize of €1000 each to the best primary entry as well as the best secondary entry. The overall winner will have their song published and released through Hollywood Records (part of Disney Music Group) providing a major opportunity for young Irish songwriters in Ireland. Nigel Flegg, Head of Education for the National Concert Hall outlines the opportunity: “We invited students to write and perform a song celebrating the modern, multi-cultural Ireland of 2016. Songs were to explore themes such as equality of opportunity, liberty, and the equal cherishing of all of the island’s children; themes that are as relevant today as when spoken of in 1916. From over 150 entries, we have shortlisted seven songs from primary school students and seven from secondary students to take part in a gala concert in May. Each song-writer will have the opportunity to perform their song on the stage of the National Concert Hall and the Disney release will offer the overall winner the potential for their song to be heard throughout Ireland and beyond, giving an exciting opening for young musicians in Ireland. The judging panel on the night will include Tony Clayton-Lea (Irish Times journalist), musician Jack Lukeman, Josh McClorey (lead guitarist with Irish band The Strypes), and Niamh Farrell (lead singer of Irish band Ham Sandwich)”. “On such a historic year in Ireland, Disney are delighted to partner on Song for ‘16”, says Trish Long, Vice President and General Manager, Walt Disney Company Ireland. “With our National Concert Hall as partners, it is great to know that this has encouraged Primary and Post-Primary students from all four provinces to engage with this relevant, timely and important subject in a fun and creative way. We have been genuinely blown away by the calibre of the entries and cannot wait to see (and hear!) the shortlisted entries performed live at the National Concert Hall on 15th May.” Schools from Belfast, Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Limerick, Mayo and Roscommon are all represented in the Live Final. The programme is supported by Disney Music Group and the Department of Education and Skills and is one of the lead education programmes for the National Concert Hall for its 2016 Centenary Programme. Tickets for the Live Final are €10 (€8 concession) from nch.ie. Further information: Rosita Wolfe (NCH) 0879153049/ Rosita.wolfe@nch.ie or Jenny Costello (NCH) jenny.costello@nch.ie 01-4170084

TORQUING CARS! MOTORING QUESTIONS WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH)
REBEL WITHOUT A CORSA
Q: I plan to buy a 2012 Vauxhall Corsa automatic. Is it better to buy a more recent model, or would an older model (2009, say) be fine? BH A: It was basically the same car from 2006-2014. The 1.4 turbo engine from 2012 has chain-driven camshafts (the previous 1.4 had a belt drive) and a four-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. HJ
FEELING POWERLESS
Q: My Citroën C3 Picasso 1.2 PureTech 110 suddenly lost all power after 3,000 miles. I let it cool, after which it restarted and got me home. My dealer could not find anything wrong. Is this is a known issue? DT A: It’s the first I’ve heard of a problem with the 1.2 PureTech. HJ
ALL THE GEAR, NO IDEA
Q: The DSG gearbox of my year-old VW Golf SV 1.4TSI 125 has two problems. In normal mode, it starts in second and is in fifth before 30mph. Also, when braking in sports mode, there’s a judder below 10mph. Should this be happening? MP A: In normal mode, the gearbox will select its ratios for maximum economy, so it would be standard to start in second and reach fourth or fifth by 30mph. It wouldn’t be normal to select sixth or seventh. The judder might be caused by a problem with the clutch pack. HJ
MANY A SLIP
Q: We traded our 2002 Nissan Micra for a 2012 model with 1,337 miles. Three months later, the clutch was slipping but the dealer blamed us riding the clutch pedal and refused a repair under warranty. Why? PM A: I have received other complaints of prematurely failed clutches in this current generation of Micra. In any case, the dealer is liable for any fault within six months of purchase. If the garage doesn’t replace the clutch free of charge, tell the manager that you will pay for the repair and then sue for it. HJ
FOUL PLAY
Q: The offside front spring of my 2008 Citroën Xsara Picasso broke and fouled the tyre. There was a recall for this several years before my vehicle was made, yet the problem still clearly exists. BB A: There was a modification to Berlingos, Xsaras and Xsara Picassos to fit a cup around the base of the spring, so if it failed it would be contained and not spike the tyre. I can’t tell you why the cup was not fitted to your car or, if it was, why it failed to contain the broken spring. HJ
CORRODE RAGE
Q: I bought a nine-month-old Peugeot 107 from a main dealer but, while still under warranty, both front wheelarches started corroding. The dealer said they are not genuine Peugeot parts, so I feel that the car was misrepresented. What are my legal rights? CH A: The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 contains a general prohibition against unfair commercial practices and, in particular, prohibitions against misleading actions, misleading omissions and aggressive commercial practices. The Regulations are enforceable through the civil and criminal courts. HJ

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY’S OWN RAS TEAM SET FOR THE OFF: Cathal Moynihan, Barry Horgan (Tralee Manor West iBike), John Brosnan (Moda Kingdom Enduarance) and Killarney CC’s Richard Maes and Eoin O’Connell will make up the Kerry team for the upcoming An Post Ras. An international field will take to the roads, from May 22nd to 29th, for 8 Stages covering 1235 km and 3 Category 1 climbs, 2 of which are in Kerry – the Conor Pass and Ballaghisheen as part of its two day stop in the county – arriving in Dingle on May 24th and leaving Sneem on the 26th. Moda Kingdom Endurance boss Pat Dunworth will swop looking after his team to manage the Kerry squad. He told the Tralee Advertiser that it has taken a lot of work to get the team ready for the start. “We had a number of riders hoping to make the squad and along with John Breen and others were gave them all the criteria they needed to reach. A few were unlucky to miss out, especially Denis Dunworth who had a bad crash in Nenagh. Thankfully he is recovering and doing some work on the bike in the gym but won’t be on the road for a few months. “We will have the full back-up service for the riders and of course all this costs money. We are looking to raise over e8000 to cover the costs and thankfully we have some good sponsors on board already including Aherne’s BMW, WeatherMaster, Kingdom Endurance, Brod Healthcare, Blox and Kerry County Council Tourism plus support from fellow clubs like the Chain Gang as well as Munster Cycling. “But we are looking for more!! We aim to be clever in the way we approach the Ras and challenge for County Honours plus challenge on the Kerry stages. We are delighted to be able to put a Kerry team in the Ras for Kerry cycling and sports fans to cheer on” FLEMING TAKES OPENING ROUND OF ROAD RACE COUNTY LEAGUE AS TRALEE CLUB DOMINATES: The opening round of the Kerry Cycling Clubs Road Race County League was raced on a balmy summers evening in Killorglin. Hosted by the vastly experienced Killorglin Cycling Club over 100 riders took part in the various sections from underage to senior riders. The main event of the evening, the senior race of 53 riders, took place over a 55 minutes plus 1 lap which saw the riders complete 6 laps of the 9km circuit. In the end Tralee Manor West iBike dominated on the night filling 5 of the 6 points scoring placed. Shane Fleming won the sprint followed by Kenneth Leahy. Killarney’s Keith Curtin did very well to split the Tralee riders and take third place. John O’Connell was next followed by Mark Ryall and Trevor Farmer as the Tralee club dominated and to make it even sweeter Ciara Tierney from the same club was the first lady home. UNDERAGE: In the underage races Killarney CC’s Shane Galvin was first after an impressive ride. Aona O’Shea from Killorglin CC was second and Kingdom CC’s Adam Lenihan third in what could be a very competitive section over the summer. Eoin Hilliard, Kingdom CC was fourth which was quite a ride considering he is still only 10 years old, Lola Eager from Killarney CC fifth and fellow Kerry rider Josh Hewerdine 6th. Sean Barrett from Tralee Manor West iBike was the winner of the u14’s section followed by two

Killarney CC riders Patrick Galvin and Stefan Caulfield Drier. Kingdom CC’s Ciaran Commane took 4th with the host club’s Tadgh O’Shea 5th and Ronan Leahy from Kanturk CC scoring the final point. Kieran Coggins of Tralee BC dominated the u16’s and took the top points from Fergal Murphy, Killarney CC in second and Coggins teammate Jack Deery in third. Tralee BC riders Robbie Scott and David Fitzgerald were 4th and 5th with Kingdom’s Killian O’Sullivan in 6th. Killarney CC will host the next round of the Cycling League on Thursday May 19th with the iBike Time Trail starting next Thursday where Moda’s Denis Dunworth is the defending champion. RIDERS LOOK FORWARD TO THE HUMPY HUNDRED HILLS: The weather gods have been in the news this week and hopefully they will smile on the Kingdom next Sunday, May 15th, when the Killorglin Cycling Club’s Humphy 100 2016 takes place. With the Ring of Kerry just a few weeks away many riders use this as an important part of their preparation with routes of 60km, 100km and 130km. The 130km route includes Ballaghbeama, Sneem, Molls Gap, the Black Valley and Beaufort while the 100km route takes in much of the same roads but omits the Sneem section. The 60km route heads towards Glencar and onto Beaufort and Killorglin. The event begins with sign-on at the Killorglin Sports and Leisure Complex from 9am and the cycling getting underway at 10am with riders due back at the complex by mid-afternoon. HEARTBREAK FOR MERCY MOUNTHAWK: There was heartbreak on Tuesday for the girls of Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee, as they lost their All Ireland Schools U15A basketball semi-final by 1 point to Colaiste Iosagain Stillorgan at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. AINE MAKES THE IRISH SQUAD:
Duagh’s Aine McKenna, who plays with reigning Cup and Play Off Champions Team Montenotte Hotel, has been named on the 14 player Irish Basketball squad in advance of the European Championships for Small Countries. Coach Mark Scannell will cut the squad to 12 for the tournament that takes place in Gibraltar from June 26th to July 3rd. Ireland are in the Group with Moldova and Wales. END OF SEASON AWARDS AT ST BRENDAN’S: The 2015/ 2016 season was a very good one for St Brendan’s Basketball Club and over 150 members were on hand for the end of season Awards. A number of charities were also supported during the year and Yvonne O’Brien

The club Chairman Pa Carey praised all those involved during the season and mentioned a few highlights including the Boys u12’s going unbeaten all season, the u14’s that won the KABB Cup and reached the All Ireland semifinal. He also praised Michael O’Donnell and Cian O’Sullivan on being called up for the Irish u20 squad. The Chairman paid a special tribute to the Men’s senior team on their National Intermediate Cup win and to Kieran Donaghy on his MVP. The award winners for the Most Valuable Players and Most Improved Players were held on the night and the winner were as follows: Clubperson of the Year – Mary Fok Seang Overall Club MVP – Edward Sheehy (Boys U12s) MVP U12 Team 1 – Jack Doyle and MIP U12 Team 1 – Coren Hughes MVP U12 Team 2 – Jack Murphy MIP U12 Team 2 – Lucca O’Carroll MVP U14 Team 1 – Rap Buivydas MIP U14 Team 1 – Jack Bourke MVP U14 Team 2 – Garry Lynch, MIP U14 Team 2 – Daniel Bowler MVP U14 Team 3 – Stephen Bowler MIP U14 Team 3 – John O’Mahony MVP U16 Team 1 – David McCarthy MIP U16 Team 1 – Laurance Guardino MVP U18s – Kasper Buivydas, MIP U18s – Shane O’Connell MVP Senior Ladies – Laura Griffin, MIP Senior Ladies – Ariane O’Sullivan NORTH KERRY ALL OUT AGAINST CORK: County Cork ran out winners in North Kerry’s second outing in the Munster cricket league. In a match reduced to 34 overs because of several rain delays North Kerry bowled and fielded superbly to reduce Cork to 162 all out. Paul Wyre, Prince Thomas, Umar and Saqib shared the wickets between them. Captain Gary Pickett took a spectacular diving catch and wicketkeeper Paul Finch was in inspired form conceding only one bye. The batting was steady with double figure contributions from all the middle order but nobody going on to make that telling big score. Saqib (24) and Paul Wyre (22) top scoring. In the end North Kerry were all out for 111. Plenty of encouraging signs against one of Munster’s strongest teams TRALEE BAY SWIMMERS SEE THE LIGHT: 51 members of the Tralee Bay Swimming club took part in the Darkness into Light Swim at 4am on Saturday to raise funds for Pieta House. Riders got a safety briefing and were ready to hit the water at 4.15pm complete with glow sticks! They made a spectacular sight as they swam the length of the shore and back as dawn broke. Clubs and the supporters have made this a night to remember in the past and I look forward to everybody having a very successful and enjoyable occasion on the 27th May.” U16’S GIRLS RETAIN MUNSTER TITLE AFTER TITANIC BATTLE.
The u16 Kerry girls team just about saw of rivals Cork in the Munster u16 final on a 2-09 to 2-05 score-line, meaning that the Kingdom retains the title won last year. The game, played in Mallow, saw Erica McGlynn open the Kerry scoring. Cork goaled but points by McGlynn and Fiadhan Tagney saw Kerry lead by a point after the 1st quarter. The game remained tight but a Mollie O’Callaghan goal helped Kerry to a 4 point lead at the half 1-06 to 1-02. The end of the game saw this pulsating encounter keep the crowd on the edge of their seats. Cork had a goal disallowed as Kerry were holding on to the slimmest margin. However a high ball into the square by Tagney saw Brid Ryan jump with the Cork keeper and it looks like she just got the touch to knock the ball to the net and the ref blew the final whistle on the kick-out. Captain Ciara O’Brien was delighted to accept the trophy on behalf of her team and management. From a Tralee point of view Austin Stacks Mollie O’Carroll stated the game and got one of the Kerry goals. Jadyn Lynch from Na Gaeil came on for the injured Sophie Lynch. KERRY CAMOGIE NEWS: Cillard defeated Causeway in the Feile Play-offs and it was their ability to score goals that saw them take the win 4-04 to 0-01. MIRACLE PRAYERS PRAY TO ST. EXPEDITE
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: THE HOMEMAKER’S SCHEME Question I’m going to take some time off work to look after my children. What effect will this have on my contributions for the State pension? Answer Under the Homemaker’s Scheme, time you spend out of the workforce caring for children or a person with a disability can be disregarded when calculating your entitlement for a State Pension (Contributory). The scheme came into effect on 6 April 1994 (time spent homemaking before this is not taken into account). You do not get credits for years spent out of the workforce. Instead these years will be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). However, you may get credits for the remainder of the year you leave the workforce, and for part of the year when you rejoin the workforce. A homemaker, for the purposes of the Homemaker’s Scheme is a man or woman who provides full-time care for a child under the age of 12 or an ill or disabled person aged 12 or over. A homemaking year is a year in which you are out of the workforce for the full tax year. Up to a maximum of 20 homemaking years can be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). To qualify for a State Pension (Contributory) you must have a minimum yearly average number of contributions from when you entered social insurance to pension age. The Homemaker’s scheme provides that full contribution years spent caring in the home are disregarded in calculating a person’s yearly average number of contributions. Take, for example, a woman who started work in 1985, took 10 years out of work to care for children from 1995 to 2005 and then returned to work for another 20 years before retiring in 2025 and applying for a State Pension. Her yearly average would be calculated over 30 years instead of 40 years when the 10 years spent in the home are disregarded.
