WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Loads of FREE Family Fun at the KERRY EXPO this weekend! Let the celebrations begin!! Excitement is reaching new heights as nearly 140 exhibitors across Kerry gear up for the big event. The Kerry EXPO (May 13th in the INEC ) which is now an annual fixture in the regional calendar brings together both businesses and communities from all over the county and promises to be as spectacular as ever. Organisers plan to build on last years’ experience and this year’s schedule of entertainment, events and activities promises more fun, with more activities, more entertainment and even more excitement than ever. The one day event is free to visitors and hosts oceans of activities for all the family, including a range of kid’s workshops such as the Wacky Science Pod, Lego Serious Play, Claymation for Movie Moguls and a Circus workshop. All workshops are free of charge to kids aged 7-12, but as places are limited, parents are advised to register kids online through kerryexpo. ie. There is over €1,000 worth of prizes for participating schools and wining schools will be announced on the day. Equally our full schedule of family entertainment includes the arrival of our friends from the Galaxy, R2D2 and the Jedi are landing down on Kerry soil as special guests of the EXPO. Darth Vader will be prowling around, no doubt looking for likely bodies to join him in the dark side, while Star Wars Troopers will have a watchful presence onsite. The infamous but highly temperamental Chewbacca will make himself known to

EXPO visitors while a giant sized 6ft Bumblebee might just be on the look-out for an opportunity to sting. The activity park will be packed with more fun, featuring the Tall Gent, Tight rope walking, and Drum Dance Ireland. If kids and teens are still full of energy they are free to test their skills in the Gauntlet and the bungie trapped Hungry Hippo. GAA fans will be pleased to hear that they can challenge themselves using the indoor specially constructed Scoretactix Astroturf . No doubt some of our Kerry Players will be roaming around to offer some vital tips to young and upcoming players. Football legends Mick O’Dwyer and Seamus Moynihan will participate in a staged panel discussion with Chairman of the Kerry County Board-Tim Murphy. The discussion is chaired by Dara Ó Cinnéide - If all that’s not enough, well then perhaps your attentions will be drawn to the sizzling and tantalising aroma of food from both the Dingle cookery school and a number of food producers such as Dingle Sushi and Kilcummin Pies, not to mention mouthwatering crème de la crepe and the little cheese shop. Cooking enthusiasts will be treated to lots of tips and new recipes as Taste Kerry host some indoor cooking demo’s featuring Mark Doe and other culinary professionals. The indoor food village will feature a number of Kerry’s top food and drink producers such as Ring of Kerry Lamb, Cordal Goats cheese, Tom Creans and Cronins Ciders, Glenbeigh

L/R- John Harty representing Taste Kerry, Breda O’Dwyer from IT Tralee/CEED co-sponsors Lego Serious Play Workshop and School Prize workshop worth €500 and Niamh Quinn representing Astellas, sponsors of the Wacky Science Pod and Jr Lab School Prize of €500, Shellfish, Krave, and many more. If cars are your passion, the outdoor vintage car and tractor showcase is a must. Motoring enthusiasts will want to flex their skills on the car crash simulator and check out the latest motoring supercars. Enable Ireland will be on-hand showcasing a range of technologies to help adults and children who experience difficulties linked to disability or aging. And, here’s hoping that Kerry’s famous explorer Mike O’Shea will return from his latest adventures in deepest Africa in time to treat visitors to his tales of narrow escapes and perilous encounters. Lastly, if

biking around the globe is on your bucket list, you’ll have a chance to chat with GoGo Dermo who biked around the world to raise funds for Trocaire. The entire event is open to visitors of all ages and entertainment is all free of charge. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our team of volunteers, sponsors and supporters who have worked tirelessly to make this event happen. For full schedule of events, activities, workshops and bus services visit: kerryexpo.ie. The event is open to the public from 11am to 5pm.

Kerry students graduate from IPU Laura Galway from Tralee and Shona Scannell

European Health Insurance Card I am travelling to France this summer. Can I access public health services there if I become ill. It is always advisable to have travel insurance when travelling abroad. But we have an entitlement to public healthcare services when we travel anywhere within the 25 members of the European Union and within the countries of the European Economic area which are Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. To avail of these services we should have the European Health Insurance Card which allows us to access public healthcare services if you become ill or are injured in these countries. It does not cover the cost of private treatment or the cost of repatriation home hence the need for private travel insurance or the expenses of relatives who travel to you if you fall ill abroad. So along with our passport, driving license, travel insurance we should take our European Health Insurance Card abroad if travelling within the European Union or European Economic Area. If you have a medical card or a drugs payment card you can apply for the EHIC online at www.ehic.ie.. Otherwise one needs to download the form from www.ehic.ie and apply to the local health office Kerry Local Health Office: Rathass, Tralee, Co. Kerry Tel: 066 7184500. The card would usually be processed within 10 working days You need to provide your name, address, date of birth and Personal Public Service Number (PPSN). If your EHIC has expired you can renew it online at ehic.ie. If you are going abroad soon and are afraid you will not have the card on time you can apply for a temporary card at https://www.sspcrs.ie/portal/ehic/showProv.do There is no charge for the card and it lasts for up to 4 years. If travelling the UK public healthcare should be provided with proof of residency in Ireland e.g. driving license, passport or similar document. The EHIC when issued is blue in colour and will have the twelve stars of the European Union on it around the initials of the country e.g. IE for Ireland. Lawquip: Q: Why are lawyers like nuclear weapons? A: If one side has one, the other side has to get one.

Medical Matters CERVICAL SMEAR CONTROVERSY – WHAT TO THINK? DR KAREN SOFFE Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer in women. It is due to the abnormal growth of cells in the neck of the womb. Early on, typically no symptoms are seen. Later symptoms may include abnormal bleeding (e.g. bleeding in between periods, after intercourse or after the change of life) and/or pelvic pain. The cervical screening programme was launched in 2008 providing free smear testing at 3 or 5 year intervals for women between 25 and 60. The aim is to catch early cell changes and treat them, preventing them developing into invasive cancer. Over 3 million cervical screening tests have been performed in Ireland since, and over 50,000 cases of pre-cancer and cancer have been detected and treated. The screening (Smear test) involves brushing some cells away and examining them under a microscope. If changes are identified, you will be notified and sent to a colposcopy clinic where a closer examination and/or treatment will be carried out. No test is 100% accurate. In the case of smear tests there is a 10-15% “overcall” or false positive rate, where you will be told there are abnormal cells but on closer examination in colposcopy there is not. There is also a 10-15% “undercall” (false negative) rate, where the test is negative but in fact there are abnormal cells. This is what occurred in a small percentage of cases that were reviewed recently.

The best screening programs worldwide should reduce deaths from cervical cancer by 80%. No screening program will prevent all the cancers. According to “Cervical Check” women who have had normal screening results do not need a repeat smear test. “Cervical check” are recommending that smears that were normal do not need to be reviewed. However, if you are still concerned you should visit your GP and discuss those concerns with them and you can request a repeat screening test free of charge if you or your GP remain concerned. The best way to reduce your risk of cervical cancer is: • Register for the cervical check programme and have regular smears (www.cervicalcheck.ie) • Stop smoking (a significant risk factor for cervical cancer) • Have the HPV vaccine if available to you (currently offered to girls between 12 and 13 years old in schools). It prevents 7 out of 10 cervical cancers Consulting your GP if you develop abnormal bleeding and/or pelvic pain even if your smears are normal.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... New Route, New Day & New Venue For The Valley 70 Cycle Boasting a less challenging route, more convenient base in Fossa, a move to Sunday and no change to the ticket price - the upcoming Valley 70 Cycle on Sunday 20 May has the makings of a great day out. Launched on Tuesday, 8 May by Kerry Senior star David Clifford and recently voted one of the Top 5 most scenic cycle routes in Ireland, the Valley 70 Route starts at Fossa Community Centre, across the road from Fossa Church. After a short, flat warm up around Beaufort and Kilgobnet - you’ll take the road to Kate Kearney’s Cottage and from there go through the Gap of Dunloe and freewheel down into the Black Valley. From here it’s up to the Sneem Road, back to Moll’s Gap and down to Killarney - travelling along Muckross Road onto Mission Road, Port Road and back to base at Fossa Community Centre. 100% of monies raised on the Valley 70 Cycle will go

to Coolick National School. Principal Irene O’Keeffe is looking forward to the event: “lots of changes this year lovely new route, convenient start and finish base and as it’s on a Sunday it probably suits people a bit more - all we need now is the weather”. There will be over 40 stewards and road crew in attendance on the day to ensure visibility and safety in all aspects of the event. There are rest and refuel stops at the top of the Gap climb and at the Sneem Road junction as well as the now famous BBQ at the finish line. You can book your ticket online at: www.valley70. weebly.com or register in person at Fossa Community Centre on Saturday, May 19th from 7-9pm or from 7:30am on Sunday, May 20th - the day of the cycle. The cycle costs 20 euro per person and the roll off is at 9am sharp. All cyclists must be aged 16 or over to participate and must wear a helmet. Further details

Wine of the Week

with Carry Out, Tralee & Ardfert

My date with Pontificis...

'On opening the bottle of Pontificis Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre, the nose was muted with hints of cherry and green pepper. I took a sip, which revealed a subtle blend of spice, a touch of fruit, and light tannins. Lovely! The finish was short and left a slight residue of copper in the mouth. The lack of finish encouraged me to take another mouthful, rather than linger long and luxuriate in the taste. The wine was eminently quaffable and reminded me of sitting in a French café...'

Enjoy it now! Great value for money

GARDENING “You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt” Gardening is one of the joys of life for many of us, but back pain can throw a wrench into the planting plans. That doesn’t mean you have to cross gardening off your list, with a few adaptations and a dash of creativity you can still exercise the green thumb by following some simple strategies to minimise injury: 1. Warm up first – gardening can be a good work out, so warming up your muscles first is a good idea, try a brisk five minute walk and some stretching exercises, one relatively gentle stretch is the back flexion stretch in which you lie down on your back, then pull both knees to your chest while bringing your head forward. If you have back pain work with a physiotherapist to find the right stretches for you. 2. Lift carefully – it’s easy to lift heavy pots, bushes and full watering cans incorrectly and possibly cause damage. To lift correctly you begin by squatting not bending at your waist and use both hands to hold the object, keeping it close to your body and slowly straightening your legs as you lift. Minimise lifting but using a wagon

or trolley to carry heavy items from place to place. Fill large watering cans just half way and consider alternative watering options such as a hose. Depending on your back problems some jobs that involve heavy lifting and twisting may be best left to others. 3. Take breaks – it’s easy to lose track of time when you love hanging out in the garden, take a water bottle with you as a reminder to take frequent breaks and if you have been in one position for along time, do some stretching during these breaks. Also, avoid doing the same kind of job for example pruning for a long period of time. Switch to something else for a while it’ll make it easier on your joints. 4. Get support from kneelers and chairs – getting down on the ground and back up can be difficult if you have back pain. Heavy duty kneelers especially those with released padded handles can help you get up and down and allow you to use your arm strength to aid the process. Kneelers will usually include a well cushioned base which reduces the impact on your knees and back and many kneelers also convert to a low chair.

much of the bending required when planting and weeding, long handed trowels can be helpful if bending forward causes pain or worsens your disability. Don’t let back pain stop you enjoying your garden if you have “green fingers” seek the advice of a Chartered Physiotherapist who will assess and advice you to continue enjoying the great outdoors. “There are no gardening mistakes only experiments”

Did You Know That 27 People Die Of Heart Attack In Ireland Every Day? Heartfelt Cardio Screening is coming to your area soon, with the revolutionary

BPro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The BPro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and noninvasively. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Family Constellations Workshop… what is it? Family Systems Constellations approach is based on belief that we can carry emotional pain of our siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, great grandparents and more generations back. Their pain can affect us now, even if they are no longer still alive . In this upcoming workshop we are looking for those emotional connections with family members, who went through painful and often tragic experiences. We bring those connections to light and subsequently they cease to have an impact on us. Individuals usually come to our workshop with difficulties like relationships, physical and mental health, jobs, finances, conflicts in family of origin, concerns for child’s wellbeing (even if the child is already an adult). Other people come to the workshop feeling that something is holding them back. Let me give you an example or two.. We have the woman who is going through a divorce comes to the workshop – during this Constellation

workshop we discover that her great grandfather died young and her grandfather died young too – besides her personal reasons for divorce, the woman also honours and recognises other women in her family who lost their husbands. at an earlier age albeit fatally ;We have the woman who comes to the workshop and she has issues with money. In our Constellations workshop we come to understanding that someone in her family lost their home and lands many years ago -...out of blind love the woman cannot have any wealth when her ancestors lost everything. We have the mother who is concerned about the wellbeing of her adolescent son. His father had addiction problems and left the family when the boy was small - So we discover that out of longing and hidden loyalty to his father, the boy is now having troubled behaviour. These are just a few examples. Every family constellation is unique. Family Constellations workshop is a one day

experiential group work in a confidential and supportive environment Kristina Marcisauskiene the Facilitator of this Workshop has a Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy. She has been living in Ireland for the last 17 years.

The Cost of this Workshop: Single Participation - €15 Participation with Personal Family System work (constellation) - €50 Book your place by calling Kristina on 087 709 1264

New Pre-Garda Studies Programme launched at KCFE Mary Lucey, Principal of Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) is delighted to officially launch a new Pre-Garda Programme of Study which will be delivered from next September on. This is a wonderful example of a unique and innovative educational collaboration as it will be delivered with input from the Kerry Division of An Garda Siochana. The Kerry Garda Division will provide a number of presentations, and collaborate in the organisation for a trip to Templemore Garda College. Community Sergeant Eileen O’Sullivan has been instrumental in facilitating this service and Community Garda Aidan O’Mahony will be involved in providing a real-life insight for students on what it is really like to be a member of the Garda Siochana. The aim of this programme, is that when Kerry College of Further Education Pre-Garda students graduate, they will be ideal candidates to apply and progress to 16

the Garda College as they will be ideal candidates for successful completion of the Garda Training Programme, subject to meeting the relevant qualification criteria. Kerry College of Education (KCFE) is introducing this programme as they realise that the majority of students leaving school are ill-informed in their course choices in third-level. Neither do they have any knowledge what a particular career is really like when finished a third-level course. A large number of students are not suitable or interested in the courses that they are studying on and this results in students dropping out or failing exams or alternatively not working in careers for which they are fully trained or qualified for. This project will be of huge benefit to the applicants and to the Gardai as those genuinely suited and passionate about the career will emerge successfully from Friday 11th May 2018

the programme. Kerry College of Education is honoured the Gardai in Tralee will assist with the college on this project, and the long-term benefits of this programme will be enormous. It is wonderful to have the support for individuals on their educational and career journey.

At the launch were Inspector Donal Ashe, Community Policing Sergeant Eileen O’Sullivan, Garda Aidan O’Mahony and the Kerry ETB CEO Colm McEvoy, KCFE Principal Mary Lucey and KCFE management and staff.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! I hope you enjoyed reading some of the tips & tricks I took away from the Makeup By Mario Masterclass I attended recently. Seriously. Experience of a lifetime that I would 10/10 recommend to ANY makeup lover! This week I’m going to be talking about something and I don’t really have a title or a way to phrase it. But I’ll just jump in and hopefully you’ll get what I’m talking about…

shouldn’t be a mask or something you NEED to wear. For me it’s something I love doing. I put it on if I feel like putting it on, but I also have no problem going ANYWHERE bare faced. I didn’t always have this mindset, remember, I grew up with acne - my life goal was covering that all up! I realised also that photos you see… ANYWHERE, are art, not a representation of being “Perfect” or “Flawless”, because nowadays, photos are taken with professional cameras in good lighting and most of the time there’s at least 1 if not 47 filters on that photo.

DARLING... JUST OWN IT!

As a woman, the beauty industry can be a number of things - Amazing, Interesting, A Hobby, A Career… but also Stressful, Confusing, Pressurizing. There’s SO many products being thrown at us EVERYDAY to make us look “perfect”, “flawless”, “snatched”. There are hundreds of thousands of Instagram accounts of Makeup Artists who look this way. Many women “won’t leave the house” without some form of makeup on. Not because they want to do their makeup, but because they don’t want others to see them without it. I’ve realised many things, that Makeup

I also realised, on the total flip side - that makeup shaming is a thing… “She wears too much”, “she’s not natural”, “she doesn’t look like that without makeup”... WHO CARES!! If someone wants to put time and effort into there face, who are you to judge it? Maybe Makeup is their way of expressing themselves? Maybe putting on their makeup with music blaring is their form of relaxing, blocking out the world. Or maybe they’re insanely talented? Why is that a bad thing?

My point is… nobody should be made feel they can’t go somewhere without makeup or that they wear too much of it. If you spend your time worrying about someone else’s face, you need to find a hobby. Just do whatever feels right for you, do a full glam if you want, go bare faced if you feel like it. Just try not to get down in yourself about someone who looks “flawless” on Instagram. Confidence is literally one the most beautiful qualities a person can have. So once you’re doing whatever you’re doing because YOU want to and it makes YOU feel good, you’re doing it right! BE YOUR OWN BIGGEST FAN. I hope you all have an amazing week!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS!

I hope you’re all having an amazing week! The Titan Fitness series is over (for now) & I am alive & well in Coogee Beach, Sydney! I’m not gonna lie, since moving to Sydney (two weeks ago today) I haven’t stepped foot into a gym! And that’s perfectly ok. When you move somewhere new it’s exciting, you want to explore in your free time (& also pass out on the couch because you’re so jet lagged) Between finding an apartment (which I’m OBSESSED with), a job & just getting to know the area in general I put the gym on the back burner for the last 2 weeks. Buuuuuut I have been SO active. I’ve been doing at least 20,000 steps on average each day #citylife. And my housemate had a set of dumbbells he doesn’t use so I’ve been doing some upper body sets at home. So what’s my next move? Yes I will be joining a gym. Fitness first I think. I work Monday - Friday 9-5 now as well as doing this & my other online bits so I’m going to head to the gym on Saturday to sign up! My plan is to go to the gym in the mornings before work. So at like 6am (but that’s literally what everyone does here). So let’s hope that goes to plan. Titan Fitness made me realize that I actually do enjoy SOME cardio based HIIT classes (which I thought I hated before) so I’m gonna try do some of them over here - hopefully they live up to that Titan Fitness standard! I also LOVED boxercise and would love to try and work a few boxing classes into my week so I’m going to check out a few places that do that sort of thing. Have I been freaking out about what I’m eating since “I haven’t been going to the gym” over here. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Life is about enjoying the moment and where you’re at. If

24

you’re stressed and freaking out about what you’re eating - you’re not doing it right. Food should be seen as fuel and something to energize you. It shouldn’t be a stressful thing that you overthink every two seconds. It’s all a process folks! I’ll update you all next week when I (hopefully) have a new gym. Have a great week, make good choices, and if you “overindulge” at the weekend. WHO CARES. Move on. There’s no point putting guilt on yourself for food - the world has MUCH bigger problems.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! TWO AMERICAN TOURISTS WERE BACKPACKING IN EUROPE

When a car pulled up next to them. The driver rolled down his window and asked in german:” Where is the nearest diner?” The two Americans, not knowing a fraction of German, stared blankly at the driver. “Sorry, but we have no idea what you are saying.” The driver tried again in French and again was met with blank stares and shakes of the head from the two tourists. Getting frustrated, he tried again in Italian, in Spanish, each time receiving nothing but sheepish smiles from the two of them. Finally, he cursed under his breath and drove away angrily. The first American asked his partner:” Maybe we should learn a second language.” His partner shrugged and replied:” Why? That dude knew four languages and it didn’t help him.”

JESUS, MOSES, AND AN OLD MAN ARE PLAYING GOLF. THEY STEP UP TO A PAR 3.

Jesus is up first. He drives the ball short, into the water trap in front of the green. So Jesus, being Jesus, walks on the water, chips the ball onto the green and putts for par. Moses is next. He drives the ball into the same water trap. So Moses, being Moses, parts the water, chips the ball onto the green, and putts for par. The old man is up. He drives the ball and it’s heading for the water trap. Before the ball lands in the water, a fish jumps out and catches the ball in its mouth. Before the fish lands back in the water, a bird swoops down, snags the fish, and begins to fly away. As it’s circling over the green, a bolt of lighting strikes the bird, causing it to drop the fish onto the green. The ball pops out of the fish’s mouth, and rolls into the hole for a holein-one. Jesus turns to the old man and says, “Dad, if you don’t stop fooling around we’re not gonna bring you next time.”

TWO OLD MEN, ABE AND SOL, SIT ON A PARK BENCH FEEDING PIGEONS AND TALKING ABOUT BASEBALL.

Abe turns to Sol and asks, “Do you think there’s baseball in Heaven?” Sol thinks about it for a minute and replies, “I dunno. But let’s make a deal -- if I die first, I’ll come back and tell you if there’s baseball in Heaven, and if you die first, you do the same.” They shake on it and sadly, a few months later, poor Abe passes on. Soon afterward, Sol sits in the park feeding the pigeons by himself and hears a voice whisper, “Sol... Sol... .” Sol responds, “Abe! Is that you?” “Yes it is, Sol,” whispers Abe’s ghost. Sol, still amazed, asks, “So, is there baseball in Heaven?” “Well,” says Abe, “I’ve got good news and bad news.” “Gimme the good news first,” says Sol. Abe says, “Well, there is baseball in Heaven.” Sol says, “That’s great! What news could be bad enough to ruin that?” Abe sighs and whispers, “You’re pitching on Friday.”

I’M FROM A FUTURE WHERE TRUMP WON RE-ELECTION AND SOLVED GLOBAL WARMING Just a heads up though, nuclear winter is a bit chilly.

A SON ASKED HIS MOTHER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: “MOM, WHY ARE WEDDING DRESSES WHITE?” coffee morning The mother looks at her son and replies, “Son, this shows your friends and relatives that your bride is pure.” The son thanks his Mom and goes off to double-check this with his father. “Dad why are wedding dresses white?”

Date : Friday 13-11-15 Time : 10.30 - 12.00 Place : House , Abbey St. , Tralee

The father looks at his son in surprise and says, “Son, all household appliances come in white.”

TORQUING CARS! NEW DAD CAUGHT SPEEDING AT 101MPH AS PREGNANT WIFE WAS IN LABOUR IN PASSENGER SEAT FACES £2,500 FINE

A new dad caught speeding at 101mph as he rushed his pregnant wife to hospital after she went into labour is facing a £2,500 fine. Louis Baker didn’t want to waste any time getting his wife Laura and their unborn child to hospital because the Birmingham couple feared it would be a complicated birth.Their baby boy had stopped growing in the womb and the mum-to-be needed antibiotics before their son could be delivered. When Laura’s contractions started coming more quickly in the passenger seat, Louis sped up but was snapped by a speed camera at 101mph, Birmingham Live reports. Baby boy Ellis, now two weeks old, was delivered safely – but his dad faces a £2,500 fine and six points on his licence.

TESLA REPORTS RECORD LOSSES AS IT BURNS THROUGH CASH:

Tesla has single-handedly made electric cars cool - and got the rest of the auto industry to sit up and take notice. But despite the va va voom of the Model S and the Model X, the real future of the company rests on being able to produce an electric car for the masses. That’s supposed to be the Model 3 - but so far the company has struggled to meet production requirements. In fact, Tesla posted its worst ever quarterly loss in its latest round of financial results this week Despite this, the company - run by billionaire space mogul Elon Musk - forecasts it will make money in the second half of the year. The electric car giant posted a loss of 709.6 million dollars (£522m), compared to a 330 million dollar (£243m) loss at this time last year. However, revenue was up to 3.4 billion dollars (£2.5bn) compared to 2.7 billion (£1.98bn) this time last year - a figure above what analysts predicted. In a letter to shareholders, the company also said it expects to reach the key production target of 5,000 of its Model 3 vehicles a week to begin making money later this year.

A new study on car advertising suggests some brands are far too macho in how they promote their products. The in-depth study claims it found a “huge disconnect” among women and men as a result. In effect, it claimed that macho advertising is driving people away. The only thing is - and it is purely anecdotal - but I would have thought that the vast majority of ads I see, on TV especially, are targeted at families. But the research insists it found a substantial 92pc of consumers felt it was “too masculine”. And as many as 77pc of women said they were put off buying as a result. Conducted for Auto Trader, the research says that 87pc feel “increasingly disconnected from car marketing”. Almost three-quarters (73pc) argue that car adverts “personify gender stereotypes or are directed to appeal exclusively to men”. Half (52pc) felt all industries, not just motoring, had “hyper-masculine adverts” that they found “patronising”.

EXPENSIVE TASTE

My husband has a low-mileage Porsche Macan S diesel and wants to replace it with a hybrid. He loves Porsches, but its only hybrid of interest to him is the Panamera, at more than £100,000. What else might suit? MS There is a new Lexus LX600h on the way and also a Lexus LC hybrid coupé, which is quite spectacular to behold. All the big players are switching to petrol hybrid SUVs. There is a BMW X5 40e and there will be an Audi Q5 hybrid (plus a Macan hybrid based on it). And, of course, there’s the Cayenne hybrid.

CHIP OFF OLD BLOCK

I acquired a Mini Cooper 1.5 in March 2015. Two years later BMW recalled it for software updates. They then returned the car and said they needed to order a part. In early July they recalled it again, this time for three weeks, and replaced the entire engine. All the local dealer will tell me is that there was a fault with the crankshaft seals. Can you shed any light? RS You have been informed correctly. The bearings are checked and, if necessary, replaced. If they or the block are deemed to be too far gone, then the engine is replaced. A technical service bulletin was first issued in 2016. It seems to affect only early 1.5-litre three-cylinder engines. 30

0 St. Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. 0 St. Joseph do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your Heavenly power I may offer my Thanksgiving and Homage to the most

Loving of Fathers. 0 St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. PRAYER TO THE SHOULDER WOUND OF CHRIST

THE MIRACLE PRAYER

B.M.

O Loving Jesus, meek Lamb of God, I miserable sinner, Salute and worship the most Sacred Wound of Thy shoulder on which Thou didst bear Thy heavy Cross, which so tore Thy flesh and laid bare Thy Bones as to Inflict on Thee an anguish greater than any other wound of Thy Most Blessed Body. I adore Thee, O Jesus most sorrowful; I praise and glorify Thee, and give Thee thanks for this most sacred and painful Wound, beseeching Thee by that exceeding pain, and by the crushing burden of Thy heavy Cross to be merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me all my mortal and venial sins, and to lead me on towards Heaven along the Way of Thy Cross. Amen. D.L.

GLORY BE TO JESUS AND MARY A letter written by the Blessed Virgin Mary to the City of Messina where St. Paul, the Apostle preached the gospel, which has been preserved in the Reliquary of the great altar. “I, Mary Virgin, servant of God, very humble Mother of Jesus Christ, Son of God, the Almighty and Eternity, to all who are in Messina, health and benediction in our ( Lord. You have learned by the ambassadors who have been sent to you. You received the gospel and you acknowledged that the Son of God has become man, and has suffered the passion and death for the salvation of the world, and that He is Christ and also the true Messiah. I beseech you to persevere, promising to you, and· all your posterity, to assist you in the presence of My Son.” ( Great graces are given to those who carry a copy of this letter.) Mary Virgin, very humble servant of God D.L.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER team to Féile 2018 in Connaught. Sponsorship cards are available from the under 14 Camogie management. The u12 Division 3 team took on St Brendan’s in Ardfert with both sides putting in a great effort. St Brendan’s won in end 6-6 to 4-04.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR SEAN’S THE PERFECT MAN FOR THE JOB: If you have been reading this column over the last month or so you will see that I was critical of a lot of the things that were going on in the Kerry Ladies football scene. There is no need to rehash these issues and hopefully these are all in the past. And when you criticise someone you must also praise them when they do things right. And those that were behind the decision to nominate Sean Walsh as Chairperson certainly deserve credit. Walsh is one of the top administrators in the GAA and was elected at the Kerry Ladies AGM last Thursday night after being proposed by Kieran Savage of Ballymacellligott and seconded by Dave Randles of the Legion and was unanimously elected. The Moyvane native was a member of the Kerry GAA executive for over 30 years and from his initial address to the meeting he made it clear that getting things right in the organisation was a combination of the executive and the ordinary members who must all do their bit to help out. Among the suggestions coming from the meeting was for an expanded broadening of the fixtures committee to lessen the workload on individuals and also to bring in a communications committee. This is certainly needed when one looks back at the way the recent issues were dealt with. Sean Walsh also said that a new finance committee needs to be formed and this is certainly needed but again it cannot be left to a small few. He also said that a defined coaching and development structure needs to be put in place. The other very positive thing that came from the Kerry LGFA meeting was that a full Executive was formed with Christena Curtin from Kerins O’Rahillys as Vice Chair, Donal Rahilly from Ballymac as Secretary assisted by Debbie Hannon from Beale. Ballymac’s Anthony Curran is the Treasurer with Nora Fealey (Laune Rangers) as assistant. Donal Doherty from Spa is the Development Officer, Joe O’Flaherty Finuge/St Senans as Registrar and Debbie Hannon from Beale as the CPO. Dan Kearney from Castleisland is the PRO. This should hopefully be a new

fresh start for Kerry Ladies GAA. There has been many good things done by many good people over the years. Like any organisation not everything was right but with the off field structures being sorted the main focus will again be where it should – on the field. The week continued in a good way with the Kerry u16’s being crowned as Munster Champions but minors lost out by the narrowest margin to Cork in their decider. The u14’s were in action as this column was being written and we will have the result next week. Plan’s for the seniors are I am sure being put in place. KERRY MINORS WIN – JUST: The Kerry minors victory in mid-week sees their winning run continue and their defence of their All Ireland still on track. They were pushed all the way by Cork whose last minute goal cancelled out an early first half goal by Paul Walsh. That goal by Cork levelled the game in injury time but Kerry showed great composure to go down the field and it saw Jack O’Connor fist the ball over the bar for the winner. This showed great composure for the side who of course are under17’s this year compared to the traditional u18’s for minors. But many of this Kerry side, including O’Connor, were part of Kerry soccer’s Kennedy Cup winning team a few years ago so they know what winning takes. Kerry will now face Clare in the Munster final after they somewhat surprisingly saw off Tipperary in the other semi-final 1-09 to 2-04. Manager Peter Keane said that it was a big team effort between the team, management and back room staff to have the team right on the night. HURLERS NEED TO WIN: The Kerry hurlers hopes of success in the McDonagh Cup could be determined as early as next Sunday afternoon. After losing to Carlow last weekend 0-21 to 0-18 they really have to win their home game this Sunday. They face Laois in Austin Stacks Park at 3pm. Kerry will be hoping that they have a full team with Shane Nolan and Jordan Conway in a battle to be fit. KERRY OVERCOME LIMERICK TO SET UP CORK FINAL: Defending Munster Junior Camogie Champions Kerry Friday 11th May 2018

travelled to Newcastle West on Saturday evening to take on the home side in the semi-final of the competition. Player of the Year Nominee Niamh Leen was unable to start due to injury and she was replaced by Eilish Harrington. Kerry led by 5 points at the break and went on to win 3-13 to 2-4.Kerry now progress to a final against Cork on Sunday, May 20th. MITCHEL WIN TRALEE CENTRE REGION 16 FINAL: John Mitchels and Castleisland Desmonds served up a memorable game when they met in the final of the Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee Central Region Division 3 final. This time it was John Mitchels who won the silverware with a score line of 3-10 to 0-13. Chairman, P.J. Shanahan presented the winner’s trophy to the captain, Jordan Mason. STACKS STORIES: The u6/8’s and u10’s train as usual on Sunday morning at 11am and will from now on train as well on Thursday evenings at 5.45pm. The u12 A’s defeated Ballymac but the results were reversed for the B teams while the C’s defeated Scartaglin. The u14’swere delighted to take part and reach the final of the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation Tournament last weekend. Unfortunately they came up just short against Rahillys, the tournament hosts. This is a big week for the Donal Walsh Foundation as this weekend over 3,000 young people will be in Knock to celebrate Donal’s life with Mass live on television on Sunday morning at 11am. The u12’s are bag packing in Dunnes this Saturday and are looking for one win from two games to reach the County League Division 1 semi-finals. The B’s will also have two games this week. The u16’s defeated Ballymac last week and are at home to Laune Rangers in their semi-final. The club thanked all those who walked or ran for the Rock last week in the Paul Lucey Memorial 5k/10k. The event was a great success for the club. PARNELLS NEWS Parnells will hold a sponsored walk up Mount Brandon Sunday the 13th, to raise much needed finds to send out under 14 Camogie

In the Kerry Feile C the team enjoyed a great win against Kilmoyley but went down to South Kerry who now go on to the National finals. The club has unveiled an Official Sign to commemorate the camogie players trip to Felie later, a first for the club. The Minors were caught by two late goals in their North Kerry B semi-final. This saw Lixnaw going on to face Ballyduff in the final. Hurling Workshop for Coaches u6 to Minor: On Saturday 12th May Kerry GAA are running a hurling workshop aimed at coaches from u6 to Minor. The workshop will be facilitated by former Kerry Captain John ‘Tweek’ Griffin, Double AllIreland Club Championship winner Darragh O’Connell and former Limerick hurler Gavin O’Mahoney. BALLYMAC NEWS The Ballymac Seniors will take on Listowel Emmets at home this Saturday the 12th Of May at 7pm in Round 4 of The County League. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,14, 15 and 26 with the next jackpot being e4,600. Coiste Na N’Og: The u8’s continued training this week and are in the Go Games. The u12’s Team 2 went down to Division 8 champions 4-09 to 3-06. They will play Cromane in their last game. Team 2 and 3 played Stacks with the first team just losing out while the second team enjoyed a narrow win. There will be no Academy this Sunday due to the County Fair. The club has committed to providing 20 stewards in exchange for a nice donation so if anyone can help please contact the club committee. The u14’s played against Kerin’s O’Rahillys in Round 4 of the County League. They were just 2 points ahead at half time but the town side hit three quick goals. Credit to the Ballymac side they fought back and only just lost out in the end. A win away to Kenmare will see Ballymac qualify for the semi-final. The boys were also delighted to be part of the Donal Walsh Tournament. They progressed out of the Group stages to set up a Shield semi-final against Castlegregory which the narrowly won. In the final it was a re-match against St Pats which Ballymac won easily with captain Kieran Slattery accepting the Shield. U14B Boys: The u14 B’s travelled away to Milltown / Castlemaine and won 3-7 to 2-1. Ladies: The Ladies put in a big effort before going down to Clounmacon in their first game of the season. The ladies also went down to Cromane but again put in a great effort.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER They played Annascaul in the County League Division 4 but despite a great effort the result went against them. The club congratulates Aisling O’Connell and Ellie McElliggott on the part they played in the Kerry u16’s win. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS In the County League the seniors are tied for 2nd place after three rounds. They are level with Dr Crokes and one point behind Spa. They play the Killarney Legion this Saturday at 7pm and then John Mitchels on May 26th. Congratulations to our former player Patrick Begley who made his Connacht championship debut for London last weekend in their lost to Sligo. In the County League Division 5 Group A it ended Rahillys 1-07 to Churchill 3-09. They take on Asdee in Strand Road at 2pm this Sunday. The draw for the town championship sees us pitted against John Mitchels in a game scheduled to take place over the bank holiday weekend in August. Junior Blues: The club was delighted to host the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation Tournament and the A’s were delighted to win the main tournament defeating Austin Stacks in the final. Fionbarr Walsh presented wining captain TJ Heaphy with the magnificent cup with Jack Savage taking the Man of the Match award and Danny Hennessy being awarded the Player of the Tournament. The annals will recall in time that we were the first winners of this tournament but the real winners were those lucky enough to participate in this event which remembers a favourite son of Strand Road Academy. The u14 B’s defeat Legion while the 12 A’s went down to Moyvane as did the B’s. The u8’s enjoyed their first home Go Games of the season. At the Academy the Players of the Week were u6’s Tadgh Lawlor and Hannah O’Sullivan, u8’s Eoghan Behan and Roman Fako, u10 Boys Cayden Roche, u8-u10 Girls Caragh Houlihan. The Academy takes place again this Sunday at 11am. In the u14 County League the team looks well on course for a semi-final slot while the 16’s are into the Central Region semi-final. Girls: The u10 girls take part in a Fun Blitz in Connolly Park this Sunday run by the Ladies Board starting at 10.30. The u12’s kick off their County League campaign this week as do the u14’s with the u16’s set to meet Duagh. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 20,29,30 and 31. LEO JOINS KERRY PLAYERS CROSS CHANNEL: Looking back over the year a number of Kerry players have made the move cross channel including the likes of Sean Kelly, Darren and Billy Dennehy, Diarmuid Carroll, Brendan Moloney and Gary O’Neill. At present Paul White, Rian O’Sullivan and Shane McLoughlin are all making a career

for themselves. Now joining that list is Leo Gaxha. The former Tralee Dynamos, Park and Kerry League of Ireland player had put pen to paper with Shieffield United signing for a three year term, a two year YTS contract plus one year, with Sheffield United. Leo caught the attention of a number of clubs during trials and tournaments he took part in and recent impressed the Sheffield club when he played against them lining out for Burnley. Tralee Dynamos stalwart Noel White who has been working with Leo and a number of other players said that giving them their best possible chance takes a combined effort. “Dynamos executive committee worked to ensure the terms are the best for Leo and we feel we have done that. Combined with the work he has put in under his various coaches we are fully confident that Leo will do everyone proud as he embarks on the first step of an exciting career”. KERRY 17’S WANDERING WHAT HIT THEM: They Kerry 17’s were 2-0 up at home to Bray Wanderers in the SSE Airtricity League and looked like they were heading for a morale boosting victory. However they let the visitors back into the game and then conceded two goals from corners – carbon copies of each other – in the 89th and 93rd minutes to suffer a tough defeat. They have a very tough game this week travelling away to Shamrock Rovers on Sunday. CUP TIME COMES TO THE KERRY DISTRICT LEAGUE: It is the time of the season when the trophies start to be given out by the KLD. One Tralee side that has a bit to go in the Greyhound Bar Cup is Mitchels Avenue. But they confirmed themselves as genuine contenders when the knocked out Listowel Celtic 9-8 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Chris Hegarty was the hero in the Mitchels as he made the vital save. There are three finals down for decision this weekend and Mitchels Avenue are in one. They take on Tralee Celtic in the Denny Premier B final. This all Tralee clash could be a cracker with Celtic looking for a 5th consecutive League title having climbed from Division 2B five years ago. Whatever the outcome it has been a great season for both as they will play in the Premier A next season. The game is on in Mounthawk Park tonight Friday night at 7.30pm and a big crowd is expected. In the Denny Division 2 on Sunday at 4pm Classic FC B take on Killorglin B with another tight game expected. Killorglin won in the League but a one off final is a different game. Before that on Saturday night The Park will be slight favourites to defeat Killarney Celtic in the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Cup final. Both sides will also meet in the League final as they are the strongest two teams in the League.

DARREN AND PA’S GOOD RALLY OF THE LAKES: While the big prize in the Rally of the Lakes is heading to the other side of the country in the hands of Donegal’s Meanus Kelly (Saburu Impreza WRC) there was lots of Kerry successes. From a Tralee point of view Darren Young and Pa Lawlor won Class 11F. They also lead the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship after three rounds. SUMMER CYCLING LEAGUES BEGIN: The Summer Cycling Leagues got underway last night, Thursday, with the first round hosted by Tralee Manor West CC. Next Thursday will be the first of six rounds of the Time Trial which will take place over the regular course – from Ballycarty Cross to Castleisland and back for the u16’s and seniors and just one way from Castleisland for the underage riders. Action gets underway from 6.30pm. TRALEE HARRIERS A GOLDEN CLUB: Tralee Harriers once again proved their strength in depth as they enjoyed another very successful Kerry Athletic Track and Field Championships which were held in Castleisland. In the Senior men their blend of experience and up and coming talented athletes saw them take home the Quill Cup. The Tralee club also topped the rankings in the Senior and Junior Women’s competitions. ANY FOREST FANS IN TRALEE? If there are any Nottingham Forest fans in Tralee the Munster Supporters Club, of which I ama long suffering member, are holding their Charity Dinner in the Manor Inn Killorglin on June 9th. Almost 50 visitors are coming over from Forest including legends like Colin Barrett, John O’Hare, Tommy Gaynor and Terry Curran plus Friday 11th May 2018

Beauforts Brendan Moloney. TV and Forest fan Bernard O’Shea will also be there with the music on the night from The Liberties and The Holy Ghosts. Monies raised will go to the Killorglin and District Mental Health Association and The Alzheimers Society of Ireland with tickets costing e55. CRICKETER’S GET THE WIN OVER LIMERICK: Kerry travelled to Adare and defeated their hosts Limerick by 6 wickets after an impressive performance. Limerick were all out for 139 and Kerry made no mistake with Usman Khan on 53 and Arsian Anwar 39 leading the scoring. This Saturday May 19th Kerry CCC takes on Ballaghadreen in the Irish National Cup at the Oyster Oval. This is a big week for Irish cricket as the national team plays their first ever Test Match. They take on Pakistan with lots of television coverage for the 5 day game.
