WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... AUDITIONS OPEN FOR NATIONAL FOLK THEATRE TRAINING ACADEMY Tuesday 30th May 2017: The National Folk Theatre Training Academy at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee is calling young Kerry people involved in traditional Irish song and dance to attend their annual Auditions for the 2017-2018 Academic Year. Aimed at young people aged 7-12 years, auditions will take place on Friday 16th June from 6-8pm at Teach Siamsa na Carraige, Dingle and on Saturday 17th June from 10am – 2pm at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee. Applicants must have a song and an Irish dance piece prepared for their audition and need to demonstrate some previous interest in Irish dance and/or song, as this training is not for complete beginners. Auditions are by appointment only. Successful candidates take classes weekly in Siamsa Tíre for a period of three years from October to May. A fee per terms applies. “Every year we are delighted with the breadth of young talented traditional musicians, singers and dancers in Kerry and they are very keen to
showcase their talents on the Siamsa stage. We provide auditions within local schools and in Tralee and Dingle every year - successful candidates then go on to learn the specific Siamsa Tíre style. For some, this leads to being eventually cast in the National Folk Theatre after more training and for others they gain very solid performance foundations that they go onto use in their future training and performing careers”, said Anne O’Donnell, Training & Development Officer, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland. The strength of Siamsa Tíre’s performing company lies in the extended Community Cast who have trained and performed with the company over more than forty years. The National Folk Theatre Community Cast of performers complete a minimum of three years of training with the company before going on to advanced training as part of their performance preparation. Students who have completed the training offered by Siamsa
Tíre have gone on to achieve national and international success as performers, including John Fitzgerald, Suzie Griffin, Sarah Jane Drummey, Justin Walsh and Paula Murrihy. Siamsa Tíre recently celebrated the graduation of its third year Training Academy students with a showcase performance. The students showcased what they had learned in the disciplines of traditional Irish singing, the Munnix style of traditional
Irish step dancing, drama and music. There were seventeen Level 3 Final Year pupils this year, with two focusing on traditional music and the remainder focusing on the other principles of song, dance and drama. also hosts activities by local groups, arts organisations, and festivals. Siamsa Tíre is funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht with additional funding from Kerry County Council.
SUNFLOWERS CRECHE & MONTESSORI CELEBRATING 10 YEARS IN BUSINESS! Sunflowers Childcare recently celebrated 10 years in business on the Caherslee Road where they have been providing quality childcare with a difference. They certainly think outside the box when it comes to children. They have clever ways of making learning experiences fun, for example, during Health Promotion Week they take the children over to Garvey’s SuperValu and let them make healthy food choices to put in their baskets. They invited the local donkey sanctuary to show the children about caring for animals. At Christmas time, the children walked down to the local Post Office and posted their own Santa letters though the post-box.
real experiences into childcare is something that the staff and management at Sunflowers strongly believe in. Their Friday walking tours down town have been a great success with parents joining the children and staff around the town where they learn about life and living. They are currently offering extended free childcare for children signing up to their 12 noon until 3pm Government subsidised ECCE session where children can stay on for free during non term time. It’s been a busy 10 years and we wish them all the success for another 10 years in Tralee.

Heartwave Cardio Screening is returning to Tralee and Kenmare, Co Kerry with the revolutionary Bpro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a health stats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. UPCYCLING: THE SECRET TO DRESSING LIKE CELEBS ON A BUDGET As wedding season now takes full swing, many of us find ourselves feverishly planning what variety of ensembles we are going to pull together for the summer weddings we have been invited to. Wedding guest style is not without its dilemmas; you want to wear something summery and light, yet formal enough for what is a special occasion, you want to be comfortable but stand out also, and most importantly you want something unique, the ultimate fashion faux-pas is to show up in the same outfit as another guest! If you are lucky enough (or unlucky enough) to be attending numerous weddings this summer, expense is also a big concern as most wedding ensemble’s typically only get the one outing. So, how do you achieve a unique one-of-a-kind look at an attainable price point? Ireland’s fashion pack such as stylist Courtney Smith, Top Model and Wellness Guru Roz Purcell, and TV3 Ireland AM’s resident Stylist 10

Ciara O’Doherty regularly use garment Upcycling to create bespoke designs from inexpensive high street and vintage finds. Ireland Am’s 19th May feature on Upcycling presented by Ciara O’Doherty caught our eye with some inspiring ideas on how to recreate eyecatching Celebrity looks by taking High street clothing from shops such as Forever 21, H&M, and Debenhams to upcycling experts The Zip Yard (almost 30 locations nationwide, check: www. thezipyard.ie). Viewers were advised that they can visit their local branch with a picture of the outfit they desire and have a free consultation as to how best to achieve this look. The segment recreated aspirational looks from celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Lopez for a price point very similar to what you would pay for formal wear in a boutique or department store. Friday 2nd June 2017
The difference being that through upcycling you can rest easy knowing that no one can possibly show up in the same look. So the secret is out, give
upcycling a try if you want to look good and feel fantastic at weddings this summer.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... FUNDING OF €650,394 ANNOUNCED FOR IT TRALEE UNDER SPRINGBOARD+ The Institute of Technology Tralee has announced that they had successfully tendered for 8 new courses under the Government’s Springboard+ initiative. The courses, which will run from September 2017 are in the areas of Software Development, Computer Services Management, Culinary Skills, Food Business Innovation, Biopharmaceutical Processes, Industrial Instrumentation, Mechatronics and Quality Management. In addition, the Institute will also offer a Higher Diploma in Applied Computing as part of the ICT Skills Initiative, which aims to provide a career route into the IT sector for graduates whose primary degree is in a discipline other than computing. Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, TD and Minister for State for Training and Skills, John Halligan announced funding of €650,394 and 190 places, for the Institute of Technology Tralee at the national Springboard+ launch in Dublin this morning. The Springboard+ initiative offers free, part-time courses leading to qualifications that are in demand among employers. Those currently in receipt of payments from the Department of Social Protection will retain their benefits and will not be liable for third
level fees. Prospective students can apply online for courses through www. springboardcourses.ie. According to Ms Brid McElligott, Vice President for Development, Research and External Engagement at IT Tralee, over the past nine years Labour Market Activation and Springboard+ programmes nationally have assisted thousands of people to train, upskill and reskill in order to enter the workforce. “Springboard+ offers an excellent opportunity to upskill in an area where there are immediate employment positions. Over the last nine years, the IT Tralee has worked with over 1350 Springboard students, linking course participants with employers throughout the region resulting in many Springboard graduates now pursuing rewarding and challenging careers.” In September 2017, the Institute will also offer the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing with Software Development/ Media Development/Mobile Application Development/ Games Development as a one year full time programme for those already holding a level 7 degree in the area or with significant experience. Aspen Grove Solutions has supported
the IT Tralee Springboard+ computing programmes over the past 5 years. According to Sean Ryan, Chief Executive of the company, all of the students who have completed an internship with Aspen Grove Solutions have been offered full-time positions within the company. “Computing programmes offered under Springboard+ offer the company a panel of candidates with a diverse set of skills. Students are already highly qualified and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience with them to the workplace. Given the current shortage of skilled IT personnel this is a great
opportunity for companies to participate in the training of possible future employees”. Members of the Lifelong Learning Department at IT Tralee will be available over the coming weeks at social welfare offices around the county to provide information on the courses and advise potential students looking at a return to education. Further information on the courses available, eligibility criteria and the application process are also available by contacting the Institute at 066 7191701 or by visiting www. springboardcourses.ie.
SOMETHING NEW IN ROUNDYS THIS BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
Tralee’s favourite cocktail bar is trying something different this bank holiday Monday, Rachel’s Tiki Takeover. The specials menu of exotic Caribbean and Polynesian rum and tequila drinks is the brainchild of Rachel Templeman, one of the mixologists in Roundys. “ I recently completed my certificate in mixology in CIT and our final project was to develop a menu “ said Rachel” I,ve always had an interest in Tiki style drinks with rum tequila and exotic syrups and spices so that’s the direction I went in “ The menu will be available from 6pm on Monday and sounds like the perfect way to round off the weekend

How do I stay private online?
It’s always a good idea to protect yourself online and the first step in doing this is to use a browser called ‘Tor’, this is a free and open virtual network that bounces communications around the world to prevent sites from learning your physical location. It forms the basis of a range of security applications, it can be used to view webpages but it is not suitable for viewing Videos. A VPN is another good way to keep yourself private, it will hide you location and most importantly, it will hide your IP address. For example a VPN can also be useful if you want to change your IP address location so you can watch BBC iPlayer.
Every Sat & Sun at 8.30pm TURAS National Folk Theatre of Ireland An exciting and breath-taking journey of music, song and dance.
CNN has changed their frequency
Anyone with a standard Free to Air system has lost CNN due to a frequency change by CNN, to fix this you will have to retune you free to air box to 12051 the polarisation is V (vertical) and the Symbol Rate (S/R) is 27500. You will have to use the manual tune option which looks up one transponder. A transponder is a frequency block that hosts a small number of channels. Due to all of the different receivers I cannot tell you how to do it but if you need it to be retuned just give me a call and I will call out to you. There will be a small fee for this.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017
Bank Holiday Burgers n’ Ribs! Hopefully the weather will be good over the bank holiday weekend, if so here are some ideas for either the BBQ or these can be done inside.
GRILLED PORK BURGERS INGREDIENTS For the burger:
• • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 1/2teaspoons cumin seeds 3tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for grilling 1/2cup diced shallots 1tablespoon minced garlic 1tablespoon thyme leaves 2 chiles thinly sliced on the bias 2pounds ground pork 1/4pound fresh chorizo, casing removed 3ounces applewood-smoked bacon, finely diced 2tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 6slices cheese 6brioche buns or other good burger buns Rocket Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
METHOD In a medium sauté pan, toast the cumin seeds over medium heat a few minutes until the seeds release their aroma and darken slightly. Pound the seeds in a mortar or spice grinder until coarsely ground.Return the pan to the stove over high heat for 1 minutes. Add the olive oil and shallots. Turn the heat down to medium-low, and cook for a few minutes, sitrring, once or twice, until the shallots start to soften. Add the garlic, thyme, cumin and sliced chile. Season with 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grindings of black peppery, and cook 3 to 4 minutes, until the shallots become translucent. Set aside to cool.In a large bowl, use your hands to combine the ground pork, chorizo, bacon, shallot mixture, and parsley, being careful not to overmix the meat. Season with 1 1/4 teaspoons salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Shape the meat into six 6-ounce patties. Chill in the refrigerator if not using right away.Light the grill 30 to 40 minutes before cooking and remove pork burgers from the refrigerator to come to room temperature (if you made them in advance). When the coals are broken down, red, and glowing, brush the pork burgers with olive oil and grill them 3 to 4 minutes on the first side, until they’re nicely browned. Turn the burgers over, and place a piece of cheese on each one. Cook another 3 minutes or so, until the pork is cooked through. (It should still be slightly pink in the center.)Slice the buns in half, brush them with olive oil, and toast them on the grill, cut side down, for a minute or so, until they’re lightly browned. Place a burger on the bottom half of each bun, and dollop with a generous amount of mayo Place some rocket leaves on top, and finish with the top half of the bun.

MAKEUP LOVER’S GIFT GUIDE Almost everyone has someone in their life who loves makeup, it’s a given. But sometimes it can be hard to know what to get a Self Confessed Makeup Lover... I decided to compile a list of makeup I cannot live without as well as some items that are on my personal wishlist and turn it into a Gift Guide for all my fellow makeup junkies. Whether you love makeup yourself or you’re looking to buy a gift for someone who does, I’m sure this list will help out.
Blank Canvas Cosmetics Master Series 1 Eyeshadow Palette €35
anything else. It most definitely is a staple in my makeup bag. You apply a small amount with an angled brush (Like the one below). Once you use this you won’t look back, I promise! Blank Canvas Eyeshadow Brushes Blank Canvas Cosmetics Website
NYX Powder Highlight & Contour Palette €25 NYX Contour Palette on Boots.ie
LOOK AT IT! The contour shades are the perfect ashy toned shades so that you don’t look muddy/caked/ like an oompa loompa! And the highlight has that gorge banana shade which is perfect for setting an under eye highlight. It’s also only €25, which is insane value! I haven’t tried a NYX product that has disappointed me yet. Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade €18 Dipbrow Pomade on Beautybay.com The Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade is my ultimate brow product. I have been using it for over two years now and I refuse to use
Personally, I can never have enough eyeshadow brushes. A good eyeshadow brush is key to good eyeshadow. I’m notorious for spending money on makeup and not enough on makeup tools, so I would really appreciate getting eyeshadow brushes as a gift. The Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes are my favourite for many reasons. 1 - They’re so affordable, 2 The quality is unreal & 3 - They have vegan brushes for all my animal lovers! I have selected a few of my must have eye brushes from Blank Canvas. You can also get the brushes in CH Chemist. Benefit Hoola Bronzer €34 Boots.ie I wanted this bronzer for so long and finally treated
myself to it in April. It’s by far my favourite bronzer, it’s the perfect shade to give a nice glow without looking orange. It also lasts ages, I’ve had mine since! Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation €45
Brown Thomas Website If you’re going to buy a gift of foundation for someone, please get them this. It is 100% one of my favourite foundations ever. It literally goes on like silk and is loved by beauty bloggers and makeup artists all over the world. It is a bit on the pricier side but 100 percent worth it!

Blank Canvas Website This is my most favourite palettes that I own. Blank Canvas are really upping their game when it comes to palettes! This is the PERFECT palette for anyone who loves a good brown smokey eye. So basically everyone! The pigment is amazing, you only need the tiniest bit of shadow, so on the flip side, be careful not to pack your brush because you will get fallout because of the high pigment. A great problem to have! It also comes with a gorge brush, normally the brushes you get with palettes are shocking, but not this one. It’s double sided and has a flat shadow brush on one end and a blending brush on the other. If you’re buying a gift for someone who loves makeup, you simply cannot go wrong with this palette.

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! Hope you’re all having a great week! Seven weeks to go until my holiday and I’m so excited! Week one of tracking my own macros went really well and I felt great! I ended up falling down the stairs and slightly spraining my ankle earlier this week so hopefully that will heal up soon. I know that lots of you are probably going away soon too so this week I’m going to talk about how to keep on track on holidays.
MODERATION While I do believe in treating myself to a weekly cheat meal or two, making a daily habit of doing so will add up quickly. Yes, you should taste the local flavors and experience your travels for what they are, but save the super indulgent meal for one or two special nights during your trip. There is no reason why you can’t order healthy meals like fresh fish, lean protein sources and veggies and be just as satisfied. Make better choices so that you can have that special meal or two, and enjoy it without the guilt. Just don’t make it an all-day, everyday habit.
HYDRATION Drinking sugary beverages and traveling go hand in hand for many of us. Try to choose cocktails that are not loaded with sugary sticky, sweet mixers. Those calories will add up fast; not to mention
26
TRALEE ADVERTISER
those are the ones that offer the biggest hangover the next day. Instead, stick with clear liquors such as vodka or tequila and try mixing with soda water and fresh lemon or lime. Be sure to drink plenty of water all day to avoid getting dehydrated.
EXERCISE
A gym isn’t necessary to get in a great workout. Plan to run, hike, bike or swim and stay active! Try to walk as much as possible when it comes to sight-seeing, run on the beach or surrounding areas or do a quick HIIT workout in your room. You can lay on the beach all day long guilt free if you’ve already killed your workout. Incorporate exercise into your day early on and check it off your list. When I travel, if I am unable to lift or find an adequate gym, I always lay down some mileage. Walking or running is better than nothing at all. No excuses!
Friday 2nd June 2017
GUILT FREE Whatever you decide to do, do it without guilt. If you’ve worked hard and plan to enjoy a not-so-healthy meal, do so with intent and love. Don’t shame yourself the next day for it. Enjoy yourself and the hard work and time it took to prepare for your trip. Travel Fit!
Rebecca Any gym supplements that I use I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla! I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE LITTLE JOHNNY
A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, “Everyone who thinks they’re stupid, stand up!” After a few seconds, Little Johnny stood up. The teacher said, “Do you think you’re stupid, Little Johnny?” “No, ma’am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!”
WHAT’S A MAN CAVE?”
My wife saw a beer sign in a garage we passed and said it must be a man cave. My 5-year-old daughter asked, “What’s a man cave?” Wife explained and daughter asked, “What about a girl cave?” I immediately responded, “It’s called a kitchen, dear.” Wife proceeded to beat the crap outta me !!!
A WOMAN WENT TO A PET SHOP..
and immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot.. There was a sign on the cage that said €50.00. “Why so little,” she asked the pet store owner. The owner looked at her and said, “Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of ill-Repute and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.” The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird any way. She took it home and hung the bird’s cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something. The bird looked around the room, then said.. “New house, new madam.” The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought “that’s really not so bad.” When her 2 teenage daughters returned from school the bird saw and said, “New house, new madam, new girls.” The girls and the woman were a bit offended but then began to laugh about the situation considering how and where the parrot had been raised. Moments later, the woman’s husband Keith came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, “Hi, Keith!”

A MAN BUYS A LADA (RUSSIAN CAR)...
A man sitting at a bar looks up to notice a beautiful woman across the bar. Just as he notices her, her glass eye falls out and rolls toward him. He snatches it before it falls to the floor. Upon returning her glass eye to her, they get to talking and the man ends up taking her home. In the morning, after a night of romance , the man asks if she goes home with a lot of guys. “No, you just caught my eye.”
WHY DO SCUBA-DIVERS FALL BACKWARDS OFF THE BOAT? Because if they fell forwards they’d fall back into the boat.
MY WIFE SAID TO ME: “IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WOULD YOU STILL LOVE ME?”
I said: “Of course I would. I’d miss you, but I’d still love you.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... REGATTA GREAT OUTDOORS ANNOUNCES 100 NEW JOBS Regatta Great Outdoors, Ireland’s reputable outdoor clothing company has announced the creation of 100 new jobs in Ireland with the opening of several new stores nationwide including key locations in Galway, Dublin and Waterford. This expansion sees Regatta Great Outdoors set to become a prominent household name across Ireland as the company has reported multi-million turnovers in recent years. Cork based company Regatta Great Outdoors started life in Ireland in 2000 when Brian Fox was appointed as a sales representative for the brand and sold to buyers from his own garage in his own home. With rapid growth, Regatta opened their first concession
in Shaws of Wexford in 2004, expanding to 18 concession stores by 2009 and finally opening the first standalone store in Limerick in 2011. Proving very successful for the brand, they now have eleven standalone stores across the country with seven more openings planned this year. Regatta Ireland Director, Brian Fox, commenting on the announcement says “The expansion of the Regatta brand in Ireland is to satisfy customer demand, which has grown due to the affordable product range we have available in our stores. There is a strong market for what we offer in Ireland, which is both fashion and technical outdoor wear as well as advanced footwear and camping ranges.
We are delighted to see our business growing following some turbulent years in Ireland as we are creating new jobs in local areas. We look
forward to continued growth and success in the coming years”.

TORQUING CARS! NICKY HAYDEN, MOTOGP WORLD CHAMPION – OBITUARY
Nicky Hayden, the American motorcycle racer who has died aged 35, was a former MotoGP world champion; he won the sport’s blue riband trophy in 2006, thereby denying its greatest figure, Valentino Rossi, a sixth straight triumph. Although just 21 when he joined MotoGp – the motorcycle equivalent of Formula 1 – Hayden made an immediate impression on fans, the press and his rivals alike. It was not simply that, riding for Honda, he had already given notice of his talent as the youngest winner of the AMA Superbike division in his native United States. Instead, in a sport requiring riders to hurl their machines around circuits at up to 220mph, he did not fall into one of the two usual categories of competitorsthe recklessly brave and the coolly calculating. Rather, he struck all with his immense and unforced likeability, and his old-fashioned good manners.
CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH)
If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@ telegraph.co.uk
MARQUE STEEL
I want to replace my Daihatsu Terios with something similar, as I can’t find a dealer who sells new models. Any ideas? BH H.J ...Daihatsu suspended UK imports in November 2009, because the yen was too high against sterling, but there are some solid options. You might still be able to get a new Suzuki Jimny, which is the same size. You can also get a new Suzuki Ignis with four-wheel drive, or a Fiat Panda 4x4.
COLD FACT
The heater in my car is no longer working efficiently. Is there any way I can flush out the heater matrix without stripping the system? AC H.J...There is a two-stage product called Radflush, designed to clear sludge from the system. Obviously you have to set the system to maximum heat to make sure the coolant with the flush circulates properly. Then, of course, you need to refill with fresh coolant. But if your problem is caused by the electric valve to the heater matrix not opening fully, then this will not cure it.
PLUIE FOR HELP
At my house in France I keep a 16-year-old Toyota RAV-4. Over the past year, when it is parked outside and it rains I end up with a pool in the passenger footwell. BG HJ ; It might be coming in via a perforated plastic membranes inside the door. Or the drains to the bulkhead vent well might be blocked, leaving rainwater nowhere to go except via the pollen filter into the car. If this is the case you’ll have to unblock the drains either side of the vent well and will also need a new pollen filter.
ASH TAG
When checking the oil in my 2011 BMW 318d, I discovered that the level had risen above the maximum mark. There is no evidence of water contamination in the sump or filler cap. The last oil and filter change was at 72,000 miles and the current mileage is 80,000. What could be the cause? AC H.J...Fuel injected into the engine to regenerate the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has instead dribbled down the bores into the sump. It’s crucial to get the level down, or the engine could start running uncontrollably on its sump oil. It’s also important to replace the contaminated sump oil. And, of course, investigate why the DPF is not actively regenerating. It could well be choked with ash.

TORQUING CARS! PAY-AS-YOU-GO CAR INSURANCE – HOW BRITISH(AND IRISH?) DRIVERS COULD SAVE THOUSANDS EVERY YEAR The traditional system of car insurance is complex and often results in drivers paying a higher premium, based on generalised claim patterns rather than their personal driving record.
From the actuaries, to the brokers and adjusters, there are between five and nine degrees of separation between the insurance underwriter and the customer. As each agent layers his fee on to the transaction, the eventual cost to drivers inevitably rises. However, thanks to developments in cloud-based data collection and processing technologies, it doesn’t have to be this way. There is now an opportunity to not only reduce the middlemen, but also introduce “hyperflexible” insurance, both more affordable and more personalised than ever. Launched in 2016, Cuvva combines usage-based insurance with hyperflexibility. Its first product, Cuvva For Sharers, allows drivers to buy hourly insurance via a smartphone app. Of course, short-term insurance is nothing new. Comparison site Tempcover, insurer DayInsure and even heavyweights such as Admiral give drivers a range of prices for daily and hourly car insurance. The newcomer seems competitive on paper, but is it price alone that makes it so appealing? The three-minute registration process saves driver and payment card information. To protect against fraud, you snap a photo of yourself and your licence initially, then the vehicle each time you use Cuvva. I found it’s a quick and easy way of accessing fully comprehensive cover for activities such as test driving a vehicle you’re looking to purchase, infrequent use of a friend’s car or even an emergency. In April, Cuvva had launched its second product, For Owners, with claims of saving some drivers about 70 per cent on their annual policies.
ONE IN A MILLION - ICONIC PORSCHE 911
The one-millionth Porsche 911 rolled off the production line this week - more than half-a-century after the first was built. Porsche’s rear-engined 911 is one of the world’s most iconic sports cars, having made its debut at the 1963 International Motor Show in Germany. Back then it was fitted with a 2-litre engine, which developed 130bhp and was capable of a top speed of 131mph. The one-millionth model, unveiled this week in Stuttgart, Germany, is based on the 911 Carrera S and boasts 450bhp along with a top speed of 193mph. It has been painted in ‘Irish Green’, which is reminiscent of Ferry Porsche’s first official 911, and has a numerous decals to acknowledge the landmark number. Dr Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of the Supervisory Board at Porsche AG, has been a part of the development of the 911 since day one. He said: “54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father (Ferry). “The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. “That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948.” Despite being more than 50 years old, car fans continue to line up to buy a Porsche 911 - with more than 32,000 sold around the world last year. And Porsche estimates more than 70 per cent of all 911s remain on the road. There are no plans to sell the one-millionth 911. It will go on a world tour which will include visits to the Nurburgring, USA, China and Scottish Highlands before ending up in the Porsche Museum.

It is the two-seater open version of what has been described as the most beautiful car in the world, with a 3.8-litre straight-six under the bonnet developing 265bhp. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Annascaul / Lispole who ran out winners 2-10 to 1-10 and they were presented with their Kellihers Toyota Tralee trophy by John Keating of the Central Regional Committee.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR POSITIVE FINDING PUTS SUPPLEMENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The positive outcome of the random test by Kerry footballer Brendan O’Sullivan has brought the use of supplements into the spotlight. On the test itself the first thing that it does is prove that the system does work. I have seen the Irish Anti-Doping Agency staff turn up at events and select a sports person. They then wait for as long as it takes for that sportsperson to provide a sample. And that can be a while sometimes! And while there has been some talk that amateur sportspersons should not be subject to these tests I cannot agree with that. That could put them under pressure to take various supplements if there was no ‘fear’ of being caught. In these days of the internet anything can be ordered and most of the time no one knows what is in these products. Players, professional or amateur, cannot be given carte blanche to take anything they want to. So the antidoping system in Ireland seems to be working especially with the very low numbers of positive tests – for whatever reason. The next fact it the each sportsperson is responsible for whatever they put into their bodies. We live in an era where most teams, from the top clubs one up, have a person on the backroom staff that is a sports dietician / doctor who is / should be drilling it into the players what they can and cannot take. However at the end of the day the responsibility is down to the individual, and if there is any question what so ever as to what a medicine/ sports drink etc contains then the sports person should avoid it. I don’t know Brendan O’Sullivan personally but by every account I have read he is a very nice guy, a very committed club man and a very talented footballer with a big Kerry career ahead of him. So I am sure that when Brendan totally inadvertently took a contaminated product containing MHA what has subsequently taken place was the furthest from his mind. With the ISADP due to publish its ‘reasoned decision’ shortly along with the GAA Anti-Doping

Committee decision not all the facts and time lines are known at the moment. The way this issue has come out in the open does lead to questions but there are not straight forward answers to many of them. Once Brendan received the positive result he was fully entitled to take this through all the appeals procedures open to him. In the end he received a 21 week ban that has been served over two periods. Remember this test was taken after the 2016 National League final so it’s over 13 months ago. So once he had served the first half of his suspension should his name have been made public? If a statement was made that a player had tested positive without naming him this would only lead to speculation regarding all the players on the squad. But as there was another period outstanding due to the on-going appeals process was it better to keep the name under wraps until the final ‘reasoned decision’ is announced. But as we see that course of action did not work as we see as a journalist got the story at the weekend. It is probably a miracle that it remained silent this long! The other question is for the Kerry County Board and Management and that is was it the right thing to do not to tell the panel what had happened. Remember Brendan’s name was on the injured list given to reporters and took this as the case. Does this tarnish the reputation between the Kerry management and the media? There is a lot of soul searching to be done in various quarters – the players who must look at themselves and see do they know the constituents of everything they are taking. The County Board and management who must examine is their ‘education’ process strong enough in advising players and should another positive test occur what is the best form of action. And from a wider point of view do clubs and Leagues in all sports need to get expert advice to pass onto members. While only the ‘elite’ will be tested we must do all we can to ensure our sport persons, especially our young ones are not sucked into taking supplements and other products that contain ingredients that we don’t understand what the
Friday 2nd June 2017
consequences are. STACKS PROGRESS IN COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Austin Stacks have jumped the next hurdle in the Garvey’s County Championship after their 10 point win over Killarney Legion in Round 2A. The Tralee side won 4-13 to 3-06 in a game where the Stacks dominated from the start. Stacks ability to score goals is certainly standing them in good stead and manager Pat Flanagan was happy with the win. “We asked the lads to work hard and put in a big effort and that’s what they did. They ran from all over the pitch and closed down the Legion so it was a good day for us. We looked good tonight which is a good sign”. KERRY LADIES MAKE TEAMS OF LEAGUE: The Kerry Ladies might be going through a tough time at the moment but the enjoyed some good news this week as Aslinn Desmond was named on the Lidl Ladies Division 1 Team of the Year. Former Kerry player Bernie Breen is now staring with Wexford and has made the Lidl Division 3 Team of the League. CAMOGIE NOTES: The Kerry senior camogie players are back in training at the buildup to their first Championship game away to Armagh on July 1st gets underway. They had a welldeserved week off after their win over Cork. POC FADA: The County final of the Poc Fada takes place this Monday on Kerryhead Mountain, Ballygheigue starting at 1pm. Girls who are u16 and senior players are also more than welcome to participate. KERINS O’RAHILLYS LOSE OUT IN CENTRAL REGIONAL FINAL: Rahilly’s lost out to Annascaul / Lispole by just a kick of the ball in the under 16’s Division 2 Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee Central Regional final. Both sides gave it everything in a very high quality second half and in the end it was

GOOD WEEK ON THE KERRY SOCCER FRONT: KERRY SCHOOLBOY’S LEAGUE ANNOUNCED NEW TITLE SPONSOR VIT HIT: The League is delighted to announce that it will now be known as the VIT HIT Kerry Schoolboys Girls League following the signing of a major contract with low calorie drink’s company. VIT HIT was founded by Gary Lavin created the healthy drink company to counteract the ‘sugar laden’ drinks he saw sports persons drinking especially after training or after the gym. VIT HIT is now a major brand being exported to 8 different countries. The company and the League have been in negotiations over the last couple of months and the contract was signed at the recent Management and Delegate Meeting in the Rose Hotel. VIT HIT Sales Manager for Munster Tara Acton said that they were delighted to become the title sponsor of the League. “The League and the company share the same ideals regarding fitness and wellbeing and caters for players from every corner of the county. We are looking forward to a long relationship with the League and its and clubs.” League Chairman Martin Conway welcomed VIT HIT as the League’s new title sponsor. “It’s a very special day for the League to sign up such a major sponsor. We see this as the start of a long term partnership that will benefit the League by allowing us continue to provide the best possible League and Emerging Talent Coaching Programmes for those in the
‘Beautiful Game’ while also helping spread the VIT HIT message of its range of drinks” KERRY 17’S DRAW WITH TABLE TOPPERS: The Kerry u17’s continue to impress and probably put in one of the best performances seen in Mounthawk Park against table toppers Shamrock Rovers. With the Irish u17 manager amongst the big crowd Kerry took the initiative from the start and were ahead in the 8th minute when a Thomas Burke free kick was finished to the net by John Hayes. Rovers were restricted to a minimum amount of efforts in the first half and probably could have been further ahead. The second half was played in the same vein as the first half and the Kerry midfield and back four containing all the threats of the Dubliners. However they did tire a little as was to be expected and Robert Osbourne made two great saves to keep Kerry ahead. However in the 89th minute Rovers equalised when Kerry, for once, failed to clear their lines. In the added time both sides could have won the game which would have been a travesty for the other. Kerry are now comfortably in mid table ahead of the break. Their next game is away to Bray Wanderers on June 25th. GAA CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE DOGS: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the second round of the Kerry Group GAA Club championship. The Track is now taking entries for the Kerry GAA Supporters Race of Champions 550 yards and the Pat B Sabbath @ Stud mini open 525 yards. Both of these start on Friday, June 9th with the Kerry Group Hospital Stakes A2 current 525 yards starting on Saturday, June 17th WORLD SERIES BEGINS IN TRALEE BAY: The World Series is the main summer events of the club comprising of 8 swims and 4 BBQs. ATHLETES NEARLY READY FOR KERRY COMMUNITY GAMES FINALS: The official launch of the 2017 Kerry Community Games Athletics Finals took place at An Ríocht, in Castleisland. The event, sponsored by Denny, will take place at An Ríocht on Saturday 24 June and Sunday 25 June 2017. The Games will attract a host of competitors representing all communities from across the County. Speaking at the launch, Kerry Community Games County Secretary, Margaret Culloty said: “The Kerry Community Games is a child-centred event with a focus on participation. It gives children an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport and the chance to progress and compete in the National Community Games Finals in Dublin in August. We are looking forward to a fun weekend with lots of great events.” Commenting on the launch, Frank Hayes, Director of Corporate Affairs, Kerry Group said: “Denny is delighted to continue its sponsorship of the Kerry Community Games Athletics Finals. Involvement with sport can be an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle and this event is a showcase for sporting activity and community spirit among young people in Kerry. The continued success of this event is testament to the hard work and commitment put in by all those who participate, their parents, the voluntary committee and members of the community who continue to offer their support”. He added: “I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the participants every success in the 2017 Finals.” The Denny Community Games Athletics Finals features a full list of track and field events which attract competitors from all quarters of the county. Young people will come to Castleisland in pursuit of a gold medal and that elusive passport to the National Finals in Dublin. BASKETBALL FANS SPOILED FOR CHOICE: From not having a team in the National Basketball League Kerry will have 3 teams next year. While Garvey’s Tralee Tigers are at the top table in the SuperLeague it was announced that St Paul’s Killarney will join Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin in Division. It is expected that there will be 15 teams in that Division meaning a North /South split but this has still to be decided.

However whatever the format basketball fans all over the county are delighted to see Killarney’s long tradition in National League basketball starting another chapter. MEDALS FOR HARRIERS: Tralee Harriers Cillian Griffin took the u16 silver in the Irish Life Health National Combined Events games in Santry. His Tralee team mate Jordan Kissane was just behind Cillian taking bronze. Also on the weekend Clare Fitzgerald won the discus at the AAI Games. KERRY CREWS CROSS THE BORDER: This weekend Kerry rally crews will be crossing the border to take part in the Circuit of Munster with the stages based around Abbeyfeale and Newcastlewest. The rally is a counting round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship and the Top Part West Coast Championship. ON THE GREENS: In the Pierce Purcell Tralee went out going down to Newcastlewest 4-1 at Killorglin Golf Club.
