LEGAL CORNER
The More you tell the more you sell!!!
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Living Wills or Advance Healthcare Directives Tony is wondering what would happen if he were in a car accident and in a coma or developed Alzheimer’s as to how his wishes in relation to his medical treatment would be respected. There is now new law, which provides that we can all plan in advance and direct in an advance healthcare directive what treatment we want and don’t want. These are now legally binding since the passing of the Assisted Decision-Making Capacity Legislation in 2015. An advanced healthcare directive sets out what our wishes are in relation to medical treatment e.g. whether or not we want resuscitation and to what degree we would like life support. The hospice foundation are promoting that we all think ahead and on their site www.thinkahead.ie they encourage everybody to think ahead and plan a safety net for a situation where we may not be capable of directing or consenting to medical treatment. What they advise people to do is to Think, Talk and Tell. So once we have thought about it, discussed it with our loved ones and told them what we want we should record our wishes on the Think Ahead form. The Think Ahead form is a form to record people’s will and preferences, which should be respected in so far as possible. The act obliges medical professionals to respect people’s will and preferences as set out in the Advance Healthcare Directive, which is part of the form. Obviously one cannot force a hospital through the form to provide medical treatment as this is a resource issue but a person can set out their care preferences i.e. the treatment and care one would not like in emergency. The form would also set out where once legal documents are and financial information. It would also set out whether a person wanted to donate their organs or not. To be legally binding an Advance Healthcare Directive should be signed in the presence of two people one of whom is not a relative. Ideally copies of the Advance healthcare Directive then should be on one’s medical file, with the individual’s solicitor and available at home and with a trusted relative. Unfortunately there is no central register of these forms yet which would be useful for medical teams particularly in emergency situations. The advance healthcare directive should be reviewed from time to time, as one gets older. Law Quip: “When you are run down the best thing to take is the licence number” If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK Recently I have been taking more and more notice of people’s(especially women’s) ideas of what is “good for you” and “bad for you”. And it seems many women are still in the mind frame that you need to do lots of cardio, eat no carbs, stop eating after 7pm and all this other nonsense in order to lose weight. As well as marking every single food as “good” or “bad”.
No no no noooooo!!!!! Go to any decent personal trainer or gym instructor and they will tell you... 1. Your body needs carbohydrates for energy. 2. Strength training burns more calories for longer. 3. You do not have to eat 6 small meals a day all before 7pm to be ‘healthy’. And yes, I’m no gym goddess(yet). But I have been training properly and eating according to my lifestyle, my goals and my preferences for over a year now and the difference is insane. The real difference between getting fast
results by doing a crash diet or getting long term slow and steady results by training and getting your nutrition right is this… If you use a crash diet, yeah you’ll lose weight quickly, but it’s not sustainable so you end up putting it all if not more back on very quickly. With proper training and nutrition - that means eating foods that are not only nutrient dense, but foods that you also enjoy eating, your body doesn’t feel deprived or lack energy so if you happen to go on a night out at the weekend or go on a holiday for a week, yeah you might be up a pound or two, but that’s normally just water weight that comes off really quickly when you go back to your regular training and nutrition that you can stick to. My main point is… don’t starve yourself, don’t deprive yourself of good foods that you think are “bad” no food is “bad” on its own. Some foods are more calorie dense

than others yes, and over consumption of those foods is not recommended. But you don’t have to eat chicken broccoli and rice all day every day to see results.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017 I dont often do vegetable dishes, so here are two of them. To lighten things up a bit. From the restaurant CROI in the Square Tralee,.... to those we turned away, sorry about that but we were fully booked. Keep an eye on the restaurant page for what we are at... It’s all very interesting
CELERY, GRILLED GRAPE AND MUSHROOM SALAD INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds 1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard 2 small garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing 1/4 cup roasted almond oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves 1/2 cup tender celery leaves (from one head) 1/4 cup salted roasted almonds, chopped 1 pound king oyster mushrooms, sliced lengthwise 1/4 inch thick 2 cups green grapes (12 ounces) 2 heads butter lettuce, leaves separated 2 cups very thinly sliced celery
METHOD In a small bowl, whisk the vinegar with the lemon juice, celery seeds, mustard and half of the garlic. Gradually whisk in 1/4 cup of the olive oil and the almond oil until emulsified. Season the dressing with salt and pepper. In a mini food processor, combine the remaining garlic with the parsley, celery leaves and almonds and pulse until finely chopped. Add another 1/4 cup of the olive oil and puree to a chunky paste. Season the pesto with salt and pepper. Light a grill. Brush the mushrooms with oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over high heat, turning once, until tender and browned, about 5 minutes. In a bowl, toss the grapes with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill over high heat until the skins begin to blacken in spots, about 3 minutes; line the grill with perforated foil if the grapes will fall through. Transfer the grapes and mushrooms to a large bowl and toss with the pesto. Arrange the lettuce leaves on a platter and drizzle with half of the dressing. Spoon the mushroom-and-grape salad onto the lettuce. Toss the celery with the remaining dressing, spoon it on top and serve
ASPARAGUS AND BOK-CHOY FRITTATA INGREDIENTS • • • • •

METHOD

Add the scallions, ginger, and garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the bok choy and cook, stirring, until the leaves wilt, about 2 minutes. Add the asparagus and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are almost tender, about 3 minutes more.Evenly distribute the vegetables in the pan and then add the eggs, pepper, and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Recipes by Cook the frittata, without stirring, until the edges start to set, about 2 minutes. Put the frittata in the oven and bake until firm, about 25 minutes. Drizzle the sesame oil over the top.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAN SHOWS OFF HIS APARTMENT TO HIS FRIENDS
After a night of drinking a man shows off his new apartment to his friends. In the bedroom they spot a giant gong. What’s that gong for? They ask. That’s not a gong he says, that’s a talking clock. Yeah right, the friends say, show us how it works then. So the man smashes it as hard as he can and takes a step back. His friends are Just staring when suddenly they hear a bang on the wall and a loud voice ..... ‘stop with the noise you dumb ass it’s 3.45 in the morning!’!! A new Supermarket opened near me.....
A NEW SUPERMARKET OPENED NEAR MY HOUSE.
It has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. And, just before the mister turns on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you approach the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and experience the scent of fresh hay. When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle, and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying on the stove. The veggie department features the smell of freshly buttered corn. I don’t buy toilet paper there anymore
LITTLE JOHNNY IS PLAYING IN HIS ROOM..
When his mother comes in and announces that they are going to go next door to see their neighbors newborn baby. Johnny’s mother is well aware that Johnny has a VERY bad habit of saying the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate of times. Couple that with the fact that the baby next door was born without any ears, this prompts Johnny’s mother to sternly warn Johnny that if he utters a single word about the babies missing ears, she will in fact beat him into next week. Hearing this, Johnny promises that he will not say 30

She is soooo beautiful.” “Why thank you Johnny.” the new Mother replies. “What a kind thing for you to say.” “And such beautiful blue eyes she has.” Johnny says. “Can she see well out of those beautiful eyes?” “Why yes Johnny.” The proud Mother says. “In fact she has perfect 20/20 vision.” “Well that is great!” says little Johnny “Because if she needed glasses, she’d be in trouble !!” AND SOME JOKES FROM OUR READERS ... THE BELL RINGER
A church’s bell ringer passed away. So they posted the position and a man came in with no arms wanting the job. The clergy wasn’t sure he could do it, but he convinced them to let him try it. They climbed the bell tower and the guy ran toward the bell and hit it with his head. They gave him the job. The next day he went to ring the bell, tripped, bounced off the bell and fell to the sidewalk below. Two guys were walking past. One asked, “Do you know this guy?” The second guy responded, “No, but his face rings a bell.” The next day, the dead bell ringer’s twin brother comes in for the again vacant bell ringer position. He also has no arms. They lead him up to the bell tower, he runs at the bell, trips and falls to the sidewalk below. The same two guys walk by. The first asks, “Do you know him?” The second guy responds, “No, but he’s a dead ringer for the guy we saw yesterday.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: LONG-TERM ILLNESS AND THE STATE PENSION
with Adam Kavanagh AKA Mr Movie reviews
Question
I’ve been on Illness Benefit for over a year. I don’t ever expect to be fit to return to work. As I’m now nearing pension age, will I be entitled to a full State Pension (Contributory)?
BAYWATCH Director: Seth Gordon Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach
Answer
Baywatch is the revival of the famous 90’s TV series that starred David Hasslehoff and Pamela Anderson. Except just like 21 Jump Street it has been turned into a comedy mocking of the seriousness of the original show. It’s almost a parody except it’s not as smart or meta as the Jump Street films. The film is enjoyable to watch in all its absurdity. With the charm and charisma of Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in the leads it’s easy to turn off your brain and sit back and enjoy it. Seth Gordon brings his familiar sense of humour that he brought to Horrible Bosses. It really is filthy and really earns its 15A rating. One thing he does that I did not expect was his exceptional eye for action. A scene in particular where the team race to save a family struggling in the water really stuck out. The film looks quite well. The beaches and scenery are captured in all their beauty by the camera. The film does lose its self in a plot that’s more complicated than it needs to be. There are drugs showing up on the beach and there is something to do with real-estate but it’s never explained what the plan is or the reasoning behind it. The only reason there is a plot is for the stars of the film to go from one comic set piece to the next. Also like all comedies the run-time of the film is just too long. Overall this film is enjoyable and a blast to watch however it is a bit lazy and does require you to turn your brain off for 2 hours
The State Pension (Contributory) is paid to people from the age of 66 who have enough social insurance contributions. To qualify, you will need to have paid at least 520 full-rate contributions, which is equivalent to 10 years. The amount of the pension will depend on your average number of contributions per year. Illness Benefit is paid for a maximum of two years. It will end before that if you turn 66, when you may be eligible for a State Pension. You should apply for the State Pension three months before your 66th birthday. If your entitlement to Illness Benefit ends before you reach pension age at 66 and you are likely to be permanently incapable of work, you may qualify for Invalidity Pension. To get Invalidity Pension you must have at least 260 (or five years) paid PRSI contributions and 48 contributions paid or credited in the last complete tax year before the date of your claim. The last complete tax year is the year before your claim. For example, if you claim Invalidity Pension in 2017, the last complete tax year is 2016. Note that only PRSI paid in classes A, E and H currently count. If you get Invalidity Pension, you will automatically transfer to the State Pension (Contributory) at the full rate when you turn 66. You will be contacted by the Department of Social Protection before your Illness Benefit is due to stop and you will be given information about your options. If at that stage, you don’t qualify for Invalidity Pension and have a disability that is expected to last for a year or more, you may qualify for a means-tested Disability Allowance. You can get detailed information about the State Pension and payments for people with long-term illnesses from the website of the Department of Social Protection.

TORQUING CARS! CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH)
If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@ telegraph.co.uk
WEIGHT AND SEE
We are considering replacing our 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe CRDI, which we use mainly for towing a caravan weighing 1,650kg. What would our options be? JM H.J....A Toyota RAV4 petrol hybrid 4WD can tow 1,650kg and a Lexus RX450h petrol hybrid 4WD can tow 2,000kg. Both have automatic gearboxes. A 2010 Santa Fe with the 2.2 R-Type chain-cam diesel could pull 2,500kg with a manual box and 2,000 as an automatic.
EFFICIENCY DRIVE
I have a 10-year-old Toyota Prius. I am looking to downsize and buy a small, fuel-efficient car for city use and the odd longer trip. What should I consider? BL H.J.....The simplest answer is to downsize to a Toyota Yaris hybrid. But if you’re thinking smaller still, consider a Suzuki Celario, Vauxhall Viva, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo, Citroën C1, Peugeot 108, VW Up, Skoda Citigo, Seat Mii, Renault Twingo or Smart ForFour.
SOFT OPTION
I have a four-year old BMW 325d and its 18-inch run-flat tyres pick up all the road cambers. Whenever I fit brand-new tyres the problem goes away, but gradually returns. The tracking has been checked and the pressures are as recommended by BMW. Is there anything that can be done to improve the ride? PC H.J .....Go down to 16-inch wheels with 205/60 R16 tyres.
PM’S QUESTION TIME
I have a 2000 Peugeot 206 LX 1.4 petrol auto. For the last couple of years my car has struggled to meet the emissions test element of the NCT and I am concerned about its chances of passing next time. I think part of the problem is that I do not use the car very much. Do you have any tips for helping it pass? PM H.J.....Use only the best quality petrol and add a fuel system cleaning additive. Take it for a few long runs of 50 miles or so and for at least 20 miles before you deliver it to the NCT Centre, so you deliver it warm. That’s your best chance. (Of course it usually pays to have the car serviced before the NCT.)
CIRCULATION INCREASE
You frequently write that turbocharged engines should be idled for a while after a run, to allow the oil to cool so that it does not carbonise in the oilways. I have an Audi A3 cabriolet with the 1.8 TFSI engine. What temperature should I let the oil fall to before switching off safely? JW H.J......You don’t aim for a temperature. You simply hope to keep the oil and coolant circulating through the turbo while it cools from almost red hot to merely very hot. The turbo will be many times hotter than the engine oil and coolant that is circulating through it.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR IT’S KENNEDY CUP TIME AGAIN: Oh to be 14 years of age again! This is certainly the age to be for a young sportsman. In soccer it’s the age for the Kennedy Cup while in the GAA later in the summer it’s the Feile for this age group. And next week it’s the 2017 Kennedy Cup which once again runs from Monday to Friday in UL. This is a wonderful week for all involved where they join the 31 other Leagues who all have their best 20 players at the tournament. It really gives the players an insight into what life at any big tournament is like. They stay on site and as well as the 6 games over the 5 days they have to ensure that they get the balance of rest, recovery and nutrition right. All squads come with a back room staff to ensure that young players get this right. While from the outsight there might seem to be a lot of down time this is certainly not the case. Once players have done their warm up, played the game, done their warm down, visited the sports massuse and did time in the ice baths, got fed and relaxed for a bit there is not a lot of energy left! The tournament is set up on an 8 groups of 4 format with the three group games on the Monday and Tuesday with the knock out competitions starting on Wednesday morning. Every squad plays to the end of the week no matter what competition – Cup, Bowl (5th to 8th), Plate (9th to 16th), Shield (17th to 24th) or Trophy (25th to 32nd) they are in – as where you finish stays in the equation for three years to determine the seeding for the following year. History: Before we look at this year in depth Kerry has a great history in the tournament. It was not always played at the University of Limerick and in 1990 the final took place in Dublin before the famous FAI Senior Cup final when St Francis took on Bray Wanderers. Kerry lost that final to the DDSL. In 2003 Kerry caused a huge shock when they defeated the legendary DDSL (Dublin District Schoolboys League) in the semi-final. Those involved that year still say that Kerry celebrated that win a bit
44
TRALEE ADVERTISER
too much and had nothing left for the final where an under the radar Waterford took the title. Kerry again came up just short in 2008. They reached the final after a thrilling 9-8 penalty win over Cork but went down 1-0 again to the DDSL. But in 2015 history was made when Kerry became the only League outside of the cities – Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford – to lift the most prestigious trophy in underage football. Kerry saw off neighbours the Desmond League 11-10 in a penalty shootout and then faced the DDSL. This time there was to be no mistake as Kerry took the lead through a Dylan Murphy goal and as they had been doing throughout the tournament didn’t concede to lift the Cup in an unforgettable day for the Brendan Hogan managed squad. But that’s then and this is now. The 2017 squad is managed by well- known Tralee resident Ken Robinson assisted by Joe O’Reilly and Tom Kelly. Both Ken and Tom have previous experience which is vital when telling the players exactly what to expect. And from a Tralee point of view The Park has Sean Broderick, Cian Brosnan, John O’Connor and Earnan Ferris while from Tralee Dynamos there is Philip Evans. These are joined by players from Listowel Celtic, Camp Juniors, Killorglin, Killarney Celtic and Ballyhar Dynamos. Kerry open their 2017 Kennedy Cup campaign at 6pm on Monday June 12th against Drogheda while on Tuesday its Sligo/Leitrim at 12.30 and North Tipperary at 6pm. The schedule for the rest of the week depends on the results of these games. 96 games will be played over the week and fingers crossed that Kerry will be involved in the 96th with that being the Kennedy Cup final!! *(We will have coverage of the Group games in next week’s column – the only place to read about Kerry’s first three games). IN THE KDL IT’S THE LAST 4 OF THE GREYHOUND BAR CUP: There is a certain changing of the guard in the Greyhound Bar Cup Friday 9th June 2017
with neither of the ‘big two’ Tralee teams left. But there will certainly be one Tralee team in the final as Mitchels Avenue take on Tralee Celtic in one semi-final. The winner will face with Killarney Athletic or Castleisland who meet in the other last 4 clash. The dates and times of these games are still to be confirmed. WHO WILL QUALIFY FOR THE RACE OF CHAMPIONS FINAL? At the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday night the highlights are the semi-finals of the Kerry Supporters Race of Champion with a winner’s prize of e15,000. Native Chimes, the runner up in the 2016 Irish St Ledger and also runner up in the 2017 Con and Annie Kirby Memorial, clocked a fantastic 27.97 in a trial before racing last Saturday which puts him firmly amongst the favourites in a top class competition. Also taking place are the semi-finals of the Kerry Group GAA Club Championship plus the semi-finals of the Pat C Sabbath@ stud mini open 525 yards plus there will be a full supporting card. On Saturday night the highlight is a fundraiser for Castledrum National School with lots of kid’s activities. The 8 Race SIS program continues on Saturday morning and Tuesday evening. The track is also taking entries for the Kerry Group A2 525 yards which starts on Saturday, June 17th. 6 NEW RIDERS CLAIM THE ROAD RACE POINTS IN SLIABH LUACHRA: The second round of the Clubs of Kerry Road Race Cycling League was hosted by the Sliabh Luachra Cycling club and following an exciting race it was Killarney CC’s Conor Kissane that took the win having been too strong in a long sprint. Kissane (Killarney CC) led home O’Leary Stone Kanturk’s Cian Leahy, Tralee Manor West iBike’s Shane Fleming, Sean O’Riordan Valley Wheelers, Sean Tagney Killarney and Simon Duggan from Aqua Blue who took sixth and the final points on the night. In the end there a completely
different 6 points scorers in the League than in the first round in Killorglin meaning the George Doyle (Tralee Manor West iBike) and Connor Kissane (Killarney CC) are level at the top of the League table. 16’s: Tralee Manor West iBike’s Eoin Moloney followed up his 2nd in Round 1 with a 4th place in Round 2. The round was won by Kerry’s Sean Barrett who is a member of the O’Leary Stone Kanturk club followed team mate Denis Moriarty, Killarney’s Tadgh O’Shea. Duagh Kanturk rider Tom O’Connr was 5th with Denis O’Connor from Sliabh Luachra 6th. 14’s: Adam Lenihan from Kingdom CC was the only Tralee rider in the top 6 of the u14’s which was won by Killarney’s Patrick Galvin, winning his second round in a row. 12’s: Kingdom CC’s Eoin Hillard was 6tyh in the u12’s that was won by Killarney Shane Galvin who was also completing a double. Next Up: This Thursday night its Round 3 of the Road Race League hosted by Tralee Manor West IBike with the action centred in Kilflynn from 6.30pm TRALEE BOXERS OF ALL AGES IMPRESS: The Tralee Boxing club hosted a very successful tournament in its gym in Monavalley where the locals took on fighters from Limerick and Down including some Irish, Ulster, Munster and Monkstown Champions. Like all clubs starting them young is very important and the younger boxers in the club aged 6 to 10 displayed all their skills. Before the contests began Mr Liam Brassil presented Patrick McCarthy (48kg) Irish Champion with the Brassil Perpetual Cup in memory of Denis, Noel, & Liam. A presentation was also made to East Down boxing club who travelled 300 miles to Tralee for the first time, we hope to make return journey next year. Jonathon McCarthy was named the best boxer on the night. There were wins on the night for Tralee boxers Jonathan McCarthy, Mike Murray, Tony Murray, Willie Burke, Mike McCarthy and Patrick McCarthy while just losing out were Mikey Burke, Christopher Mongan, Tommy Kenny and Adam Radellzuk Tralee Boxing Club would like to thank all Officials, Referees, Coaches, Boxers, who made this tournament a great success. TRALEE BAY WORLD SERIES GETS UNDERWAY: The first round of the Tralee Bay Swimming Clubs World Series, sponsored by Hugh Culloty, took place over 650 meters. The fastest time was set by Matt O’Regan in 9.27. The top 3 in the Groups were David Smith, Elaine Burrows Dillane and Alan Murphy from Group A, Donie O’Sullivan, Frank Ryan and Niall O’Loinsigh from

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Group B with Lorraine Bowler, Noel Ryan and Paudie McQuinn taking the top 3 in Group C. The 2017 Cross Bay Challenge takes place at 9am on Saturday July 29th. This 5km swim goes from Derrymore to Fenit and is only open to first time distance swimmers. Numbers are limited and those intending to take part must registrar with the Tralee Bay Swimming Club. PITCH AND PUTT NEWS: Tralee’s Tony Blake and Jason O’Regan joined Deerpark Killarney members Danny Looney and Damien Fleming in the All Ireland Match Play finals staged at Tipperary Hills. Sadly there was no luck for any of the Kerry players with the Tralee duo going out early. The Killarney players went out in Round 2. The Kerry County Stroke Play Finals take place this Sunday at the Deerpark Pitch and Putt club in Killarney. NORTH KERRY BOWLED OUT TO WATERFORD: The minor cup cricket match between North Kerry and Waterford was played in Cork on Monday. The incessant rain meant the match turned in to a bowl out. In this all 11 players bowl one delivery at the stumps. After 9 deliveries each North Kerry were leading by 2-1 (Michael Pickett and Eddie Garczynski being the successful bowlers). Unfortunately for the Kerry team the last two Waterford bowlers hit the stumps, leading to a 3-2 victory to them. TRALEE CREWS DO WELL IN CIRCUIT OF MUNSTER: There were a large number of Kerry entrants in the Circuit of Munster rally based around Abbeyfeale and Newcastlewest. Killarney’s Mikie Galvin and West Cork’s Keith Cronin were the highest placed taking 6th. Tralee’s Darren Young and Sean Walsh were 2 places further back in the Honda Civic and were 2nd in Class 11F while Keith McCarthy from just outside Lixnaw was another Kerry man calling the notes. He finished in 30th place beside Limericks Kenneth Ryan in their Ford Escort Mk 2 and 4th in Class 11R. The all Tralee crew of Eoin Duffin and Mike Cleary were just behind in 34th in another Mk2 Escort and were 5th in Class 14. Tralee co-driver Sean Hegarty followed them home in the Ford R2 T taking second in Class 2 alongside Limerick’s Keith Lyons. Also inside the top 40 were Tralee’s Ger O’Brien and Sean Liston were in another Mark 2 Escort and were 37th and 5th in Class 13. Historic Win: PJ O’Dowd and John Young were the winners of the Historic category in their trusty Talbot Sunbeam.
LOCAL GIRLS ON NATIONAL SQAUD: Basketball Ireland senior women’s coach Mark Scannell has named two Kerry ladies on his senior Irish squad. Duagh’s Aine McKenna who plays for Glanmire and Emma Sherwood, now with Killester will face Iceland in two games this weekend. The first is at the Mardyke in Cork this Friday night, June 9th at 7.30pm with the second in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght at 5pm. Speaking ahead of the weekend, Coach Scannell stated: “We are really looking forward to this weekend and welcoming Iceland for the Mardyke Series. We know we have a very tough challenge ahead of us, Iceland are a quality side and will not be easy opposition by any means. We have been working hard since returning from Luxembourg and these games will be a great opportunity for all of the named players to show they have what it takes to represent Ireland at this level.” PARNELLS NEWS: Under 14 Boys: Well done to Parnells U14’s who defeated Kilmoyley in the Division 2 County League final Friday evening in Caherslee. The Tralee boys won 4-08 to 1-06 Final score 4-08 to 1-06. This was a great effort by the boys ahead of the Feile in Carlow later this month. Under 10 and 11 boys: The Under 10 and 11 teams played very well in Abbeydorney on Friday evening and both teams came away with wins. There was 3 wins from 3 for our U11 team who now take on Ballyduff next week in Caherslee to decide who wins the group. Under 8 boys: The u8’s put in a very good performance in Causeway. a cracking game and it took a last minute Podge Boyle free to see Ballyduff win 1-19 to 1-18. In County League Division 2 Lady’s Walk had their first win of the season defeating Lixnaw 2-15 to 0-12. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,17,18 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e8,200. The Gold team won a high scoring encounter away in Gneeveguilla on a 5-16 to 5-10 score line before going down to Castleisland Desmonds on Sunday evening. The u9’s had academy training while the u10’s were in Community Games action and while they didn’t qualify they put in some good performances especially as many are underage again next year. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,12, 20 and 26 and the next Jackpot will be e7,800. The Seniors picked up two very valuable County League points with a 0-16 to 1-08 win over Austin Stacks. They are in Rathmore this weekend for Round 5. There was a great crowd present when one of the club legendary players was remembered and is honoured with a corner in his memory – Danno’s Corner – in the club house. The corner is adorned with some special memorabilia of Dan O’Keeffe’s career with Kerry. His 18 year career with Kerry saw him win 7 All Ireland medals from 13 All Ireland finals and winning 14 Munster Senior titles. He is the oldest player to win an All Ireland senior medal at 39 in 1946 and was named goalkeeper in the Team of the Century (1984) and Team of the Millennium (2000). For the club he also won 2 Senior County Championships.
Feile 2017: The countdown is truly under way for the John West Feile na nGael 2017 which takes place in Friday 9th June 2017
