TECHNOLOGY CORNER Billy O Meara (HRI Services)

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Question:

My laptop is slow how can I speed it up ?

It's only natural that your Laptop should get slower as it gets older. Like your house, your computer can benefit from a thorough spring clean. Over time, laptops and PCs get clogged up with temporary internet files, unused software and other digital debris. Make sure all your software is up to date. This includes web browsers, applications, drivers for devices such as printers and, most importantly security software. Defrag your hard drive, uninstall software the you no longer use. Disable some startup programs by clicking Start, then type msconfig in the search bar and press Enter. In the System Configuration window, click the Startup tab you will see what programs are starting. But if you are unsure what the program is don’t disable it Question:

What is the difference in Solid state hard drives and normal ones?

BOOKING ON: 066 7123055 IN THE GALLERY RÁTH AGUS RINCE

Celebrating 25 Years of an Iconic Building Celebrating a much loved building, its creation and official launch all those years ago, using video footage, memorabilia and photographs. Runs until 17th September ADMISSION FREE

Standard HDD drives contain multiple disks called platters, which are covered in a magnetic coating and then rotated at high speed. Drive heads then move across the platters, changing the magnetisation of the material beneath to record data, or reading its state to return the stored information. While solid state drive is made up of memory chips no moving parts they are more expensive than standard drives. If you upgrade to a solid state drive, you'll then benefit from faster boot times, and a general speed boost as Windows components are loaded more quickly

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... HOW DO YOU KNOW ITS SUMMER? SINUS & HAYFEVER TELLS YOU!! have you noticed in the last month or two more and more people saying “I think I have hayfever ! “ or “My sinus seems to be at me “! Well in the case of hayfever , if any of the following rings a bell , you possibly do ! frequent sneezing.runny or blocked nose.itchy, red or watery eyes an itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears.,cough, caused by mucus dripping down the throat from the back of the nose. And in the case of Sinus , then maybe you are feeling ...pain or pressure sensations on the face along with tenderness and swelling, stuffy nose, or nasal congestion, drainage or discharge from the nose, cough, earache, pain in the jaw or teeth, maybe even nausea. The good news is that you dont have to suffer in silence , and you probably dont have to get hooked on medication just to get some relief .......Help is at hand in the form of Halotherapy ....Salt Therapy to be exact in Tralees Salt Rooms in Market Lane ...the perfect natural solution to breathing issues . Here’s what Fiona has to say after her experience “My son is 5 years old. He has used inhalers for the winter months since he was a year old. Our neighbour suggested Salt therapy. I booked an appointment. We did five sessions in a two week period and his chest is clearer, although he still needs his inhalers, I have been able to reduce the amount of Ventolin . The Salt Therapy had no negative effect on my son. My son had no hesitation in going. It was very child friendly. I intend doing salt therapy again , I would recommend you do at least five sessions, and do them close together to get maximum benefit.”

And Helen ...... “I developed breathing problems associated with my ongoing Sinusitis and researched Salt Therapy . it gives me great relief after I complete a few sessions and I find I dont have to go again for a long time . Its great prior to the Summer months or damp season as I can now be well prepared . Stas is an absolute gentleman and always throws in more sessions than I need , just in case ! For more information on Salt Therapy , visit Stas at the Salt Rooms in Market Lane (opposite Supervalu ) or call him on 087-7845880

JERRY , OUR KERRY SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR UP FOR €600,000 PRIZE FUND

A Kerry based social entrepreneur, Jerry Kennelly, has been shortlisted for the annual Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Awards Programme, sponsored by DCC plc. Over 170 entries were received by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, with 50 being shortlisted to attend Social Entrepreneurs Bootcamp held recently in the RDS. The prestigious social-funding competition, now in its twelfth year, has supported 190 social entrepreneurs to date and invested €6.2m in direct funding to projects in areas including community and active citizenship, education and learning, environment and sustainability and mental and physical health. The shortlisted entry from Kerry was: Junior Entreprenuer Programme The Junior Entrepreneur Programme is a real-life entrepreneurship skills programme for primary school children which nurtures independence, creativity and problem solving. By engaging pupils of all abilities, and helping them to appreciate their own unique skills, the programme seeks to build their entrepreneurial skills, confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem. Attendees at Bootcamp received expert coaching during workshops and talks specially designed to further their understanding of crucial business methods such as fundraising, branding, media and networking. Participants were given 15 minutes to pitch their project to a panel of judges. Following Bootcamp, six Impact applicants and twelve Elevator applicants were chosen to proceed to the next stage of the selection process. This year the competition will be providing €420,000 in direct funding to nine social entrepreneurs. In addition, direct support valued at €180,000 will be made available to successful applicants ensuring that they are equipped to bring their vision to fruition as soon as possible and have a positive impact on their respective communities and beyond. CEO of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, Darren Ryan, said, “In Ireland today we aren’t solving our social problems quickly enough and this process is all about empowering people to bring about change right across Ireland. The challenges we face are vast and complex, and so we need to support people to develop innovative approaches to solve them. We have been inspired by the calibre of applicants for this year’s Awards and the incredible impact that social entrepreneurs are having all over the island. The supports from SEI, along with the backing of our main partner DCC, will help the successful entrants to increase this impact and build sustainable organisations.” The successful applicants will be announced at a gala ceremony in October 2016. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TONY CHRISTIE TO PLAY KILLARNEY

The legendary Tony Christie, famous for such hits as I did what I did for Maria, Solitaire, So deep is the Night and of course Is This the way to Amarillo is to play Killarney for one performance only on Friday 18th of November. Tony Christie was a voice considered not too dissimilar to Tom Jones, and currently both legendary showmen are sharing the bill together in Europe. Of course Tom Jones played the INEC last year, and the chances to see living legends are rare. This time Tony Christie will bring his amazing big band to Ireland for two nights only, he plays the Cork Opera House on the Sat Night which will be the 19th. Manager of the Cork Opera House Ashley Keating said “we are confident an artist of this calibre will sell out quite quickly.” We spoke with local entertainer Mark Leen who informed us about the gigs and told us that he would be playing support to the legendary singer on both nights, saying he was “honoured to be doing it.” He said “I am delighted to be sharing the stage with an all time hero of mine.” “I grew up singing his songs, and of course DJ Curtin recorded Frankie and a few more of Tony’s hits, that’s how I got into him. I have been singing Las Vegas, Don’t Go Down to Reno, Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast and the Avenues and Alleyways for years he added.” “Former Tralee Showband Star and frontman Eddie Lynch of the Vangaurd 6 said “Tony Christie was always one of my favourite voices, I will be there for sure.” When Albert Hammond played recently the place was packed all the way up to the upper balcony at the INEC said a Gleneagle manager, we can see this event selling very well also. His songs are timeless, and people will know most if not every one of them and so we think he will go down a treat. There is no one like Tony Christie playing the venue this year, so it will be special and everyone will be doing the Sha La La La’s for Amarillo. Tickets are now on sale at the Box Office. Mark Leen has a very limited bunch of early bird seats for Tralee audiences with up to €8 euro off the price on the night and he can be contacted on 086-1935277.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PREGNANT AT WORK – HEALTH AND SAFETY LEAVE Question I do night work regularly but I am expecting a baby in six months. Can I stop working at night while I am pregnant? Answer Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, every employer is required to carry out a risk assessment for the workplace. This assessment should identify hazards in the workplace, assess the risks from such hazards and identify the steps to be taken to deal with any risks. Now that you are pregnant, your employer should carry out a separate risk assessment for you. If there are particular risks to you during your pregnancy, these should be either removed or you should be moved away from them. If neither of these options is possible, you should be given health and safety leave from work, which may continue up the beginning of your maternity leave (under the Maternity Protection Acts 1994 and 2004). If a doctor certifies that night work is unsuitable for you during your pregnancy, you must be given alternative work or health and safety leave. Time spent on health and safety leave is treated as though you have been in employment, and this time can be used to accumulate annual leave entitlement. You are not entitled to leave for any public holidays that occur during health and safety leave. During health and safety leave, your employer must pay you your normal wages for the first 21 days (3 weeks), after which you may qualify for Health and Safety Benefit from the Department of Social Protection. When you return to work after maternity leave, if there is any risk to you because you have recently given birth or are breastfeeding, that risk should be removed. If this is not possible, you should be moved to alternative work. If it is not possible for you to be assigned alternative work, you should be given health and safety leave. If night work is certified by a doctor as being unsuitable after the birth, alternative work should be provided. If alternative work cannot be provided, you should be given health and safety leave.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAGICIAN WAS WORKING ON A CRUISE SHIP...

DIVORCE

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood he started shouting in the middle of the show: “Look, it’s not the same hat!” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table!” Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything; it was, after all, the captain’s parrot. One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean -- with the parrot, of course. They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day and another and another. After a week the parrot said, “OK, I give up. Where’s the boat?”

A COWBOY APPEARS BEFORE ST. PETER.

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy offered. “On a trip to the Big Horn Mountains out in Wyoming, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.” I yelled, “Now, back off or I’ll kick the CR*P out of all of you” Saint Peter was impressed, “When did this happen?” “Couple of minutes ago.” 20

An elderly man in Phoenix calls his son in New York and says, “I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.” “Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man says. “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her,” and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “They’re not getting divorced if I have anything to do about it,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.” She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at the old man, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife and says, “Okay, they’re coming for Thanksgiving...now what do we tell them for Christmas?”

A MARRIED MAN WAS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH HIS SECRETARY

One day, their passions overcame them and they took off for her house. Later on , they fell asleep and awoke at around 8 p.m. As the man threw on his clothes, he told the woman to take his shoes outside and rub them through the grass and dirt. Mystified, she nonetheless complied and he slipped into his shoes and drove home. “Where have you been?” demanded his wife when he entered the house. “Darling,” replied the man, “I can’t lie to you. I’ve been having an affair with my secretary. I fell asleep in her bed and didn’t wake up until eight o’clock.” The wife glanced down at his shoes and said, “You liar! You’ve been playing golf!”

Bexblah Fitness! Hello my strong friends, I hope you’re all having a great week. As I was saying last week, I started an online coaching plan with Rob Lipsett and I have my first week workouts done. My training split looked a little like this… Day 1: Chest & Back Day 2: Legs & Abs Day 3: Shoulders & Arms Day 4: Chest & Back Day 5: Legs & Abs Day 6: Shoulders & Arms Day 7: REST Rob personalised the workout plan to me and my goals(mainly fat loss and muscle gain) and added in 2 sessions of HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training) or LISS(Low Intensity Steady State) cardio into my week also which can be done whenever I please. I had been following my own training plan but it was kind of scattered and all over the place and I was just training whatever I felt like training on that day. But now I’m training every body part twice a week. It’s insane the difference following a workout plan can have, I feel like I have accomplished more in the gym this week and I even enjoy my sessions more. My body feels it too, in a good way. I have that good pain in my muscles back because I am working harder and pushing myself again. I also have Rob there for any questions I have. His knowledge and passion is insane and he has sent me so many interesting articles on different topics.

As for the nutrition side of things, I am hitting my macros as close as possible every day, I had one perfect day and it felt awesome, it’s the little things. Included in my macros to hit every day is 25-30 grams of Fibre every day, which at the start I was struggling with so I realised I hadn’t been eating enough at all. I fit in the foods I like to eat, I had a meal out and I guesstimated the macros, some places in Dublin have all the macros on the menu which is very very handy. Eating out doesn’t have to be avoided you just have to be smart about it, for example I went to The Brandon gym here on Tuesday morning with my mom, afterwards her and her friends were having coffee and things in the bar in The Brandon Hotel and I simply asked did they have chicken eggs and brown bread, which of course was no problem at all. I could have easily ordered a scone with butter and jam or had a croissant or pastry, but I knew that if I did it would mean that I would start the day on very high macros and therefore would have had less to eat later. I’m not about that chicken, rice and broccoli for every meal life, I’m all about variety and balance! If you’re interested in counting your own macros or finding out more about it you can Google it or simply go to a professional who knows what they’re talking about!

HEALTHY RECIPES

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

TRALEE ADVERTISER

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016 Borage is a herb few chefs use. It grows here both wild and in gardens for its flowers and scent. But it is also a herb and a very tasty one at that! I have written a piece on it on my blog www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com Here are two easy recipes for the lovely herb.

BORAGE SOUP

BORAGE CHIMICHURRI Chimichurri is an Argentine sauce typically used with red meat, but it is also excellent with fish and seafood. The traditional recipe always has parsley, garlic and oregano.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

4 spring onions 2 lbs borage leaves (or some other green) 1 small bunch parsley 1 cup white wine 1 cup light stock — chicken or veggie 1 potato, peeled Salt Juice of a lemon

METHOD 1.

Set a large pot of salty water — it should taste like the sea — to a boil. 2. Meanwhile, cut the potato into large chunks. 3. When the water boils, cook the potato for about 15-20 minutes, until it is reasonably soft. You do not want it falling apart, though. 4. Remove the potato and set aside. Get a large bowl filled with ice water ready. 5. Boil the spring onions for 2-3 minutes, then submerge in the ice water. 6. Boil the parsley for 2 minutes and submerge in the ice water. 7. Boil the borage for 1 minute and submerge in the ice water. 8. When they’re cool, take all the greens out and put in a colander to drain. 9. In a pot, bring the stock and wine to a simmer. Add the potato and crush it into the sauce. Simmer this for 15 minutes, or until the potato is dissolved. 10. Meanwhile, chop the greens well. Add them to the soup when the potato is ready. Stir well and bring back to a simmer. Add salt if needed. 11. Turn off the heat and ladle the soup into a food processor. Buzz the soup, in batches if need be, until it is a puree. 12. Return to the pot and reseason with salt, if you need to. When you serve, stir a little lemon juice into each bowl right before you give your guests the soup. Serve with crusty bread or toast.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup water 1 t. salt 4-6 garlic cloves 1 cup parsley and borage 1/2 cup oregano leaves (or 2 tablespoons dried) 2 teaspoons hot pepper flakes, or 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 cup olive oil

METHOD • •

Heat the water and dissolve the salt in it. When it is cool enough to stick your finger in, proceed with the chimichurri. Put everything except the olive oil into a food processor and buzz to combine - you can puree it or leave it chunky. Your choice. With the motor running, drizzle in the olive oil and buzz for 30 seconds to a minute. Allow it to marinate for a few hours before serving. Chimichurri should hold up for a week or two in the fridge.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SIX KERRY LADS HEAD TO ROSE FESTIVAL

SIX lads from Kerry have graduated from Boot Camp and will travel to Kerry as Rose Escorts at the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival. James Finn (21), Shane Kenny (23), Padraic McCarthy (23), James O’Connor (26), Corey McConnell (23) and Stewart Nolan (22) were among the 65 guys who will be the Rose Escorts to 65 Roses taking part in this year’s extended Festival from 17-23 August in Tralee. The lads were put through their paces over the Bank Holiday Weekend at the annual Boot Camp in Dingle, Ballybunnion and Castlegregory along the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry. The Rose of Tralee International Festival’s Communications Manager, John Drummey, said: “The Rose Escorts spent three days in Kerry where they undertook a number of endurance tasks to prepare them for the festival in August. It was not because the ladies love Milk Tray but because the lads prefer Roses. Over 200 men aged between 21 and 30 applied to become Rose Escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival and following a detailed interview process, the final 65, the most ever, were selected to take part in a Boot Camp weekend in the Kingdom to help them cope with the demands of a busy week in Tralee.” The lads had to carry out a range tasks including a cycle over Connor Pass, a hike up Mount Brandon, turf-footing, abseiling, kayaking, surfing, ironing and sewing in order to prove they will have the stamina to be a Rose Escort. This year’s Rose Escort Boot Camp activities were supported by Kerry County Council and Kerry Civil Defence, under Civil Defence Officer Tom Brosnan, who played a major role in the transport and logistics of the event. The Rose Escorts experienced the visitor facilities in Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, Blennerville Windmill and Tralee Ship Canal, Tralee Town Park, Ballybunnion Seaweed Baths, Crag Caves in Castleisland, Aqua Dome Tralee and Manor West Hotel. Dingle Distillery, Jamie Knox Watersports, Castlegregory Community Hall, The Rose Hotel and Kirby’s Brogue Inn Tralee also played their part in making the Boot Camp a memorable weekend for the men. Nearly the whole country has been represented with the Escorts hailing from 26 out of the 32 counties and one of the lads will be selected as the Rose Escort of the Year live on RTÉ One on Monday 22nd August. The 2015 Escort of the Year, Shane Kenny from The Spa, Tralee, Co Kerry, said: “Having been selected as the Escort of the Year was nothing short of a great honour. The opportunity to represent a fantastic group and to accompany our Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, at numerous events has been a brilliant experience. I’ve travelled extensively attending many charity events and Rose reunions while also working closely with a fantastic Rose of Tralee Team who couldn’t have done any more for me. I’ve made memories and friendships that will be cherished forever.” The 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place in Tralee from 17-23 August when a full line-up of free and affordable entertainment is planned including concerts featuring Reggie N Bollie, Nathan Carter, Hometown, Hudson Taylor, Hermitage Green, The Willis Clan, Ronan Collins Showband Show, televised selections presented by Dáithí Ó Sé, Fashion Show, three parades, two fireworks displays and an Air Show. Full details of this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival are available from www.roseoftralee.ie, Facebook and Twitter @roseoftralee_.

TORQUING CARS! THE HYUNDAI TUCSON, IRELAND’S BEST SELLING CAR SO FAR

With all eyes now turning to the 162-reg from July 1, the latest SIMI statistics on new-car sales show the Hyundai crossover/SUV heads the table, beating some big-name competitors by quite a distance. The figures show 5,069 Tucsons were registered in the first five months of the year. They were followed by Volkswagen Golf registrations of 3,623 with the Ford Focus on 3,289. Others in the Top 10 were the Skoda Octavia, Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Corolla, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Passat saloon and Toyota Auris. Registrations last month were down 5.59pc but are still running 23.3pc ahead of the first five months of 2015. Total registrations for the year-to-date total 99,740, the SIMI figures show. The fall in May (down to 6,532 from 6,919 last year) reflects how the two registration periods are shaping people’s buying patterns with large numbers holding off to buy a 162reg plate from the beginning of next month. Volkswagen (10,742) returned to the top of the registrations table, followed by Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, Skoda, Renault, Opel, Kia and Audi. Few cars are expected to be bought this month as buyers wait for the new reg period only 1,448 were registered in June 2015.

VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT ALLTRACK: ‘IT’S BEEN GIVEN THE BEAR GRYLLS TREATMENT ‘

The Alltrack shares most of its mechanical bits and bobs with the standard Passat, which is no bad thing. It has, however, been given the Bear Grylls treatment and been toughened up with bigger bumpers, wheel-arch protectors and side-sill covers, and the ride height has been raised by 28mm. So it definitely looks the part, but what is it like to drive? In short, fantastic. The Alltrack’s 190bhp 2.0 TDI engine may be slightly noisy, but inside the classy cabin it remains remarkably hushed, thanks to VW’s excellent sound deadening. The model I tested came in at €49,130, but had the great six-speed DSG twin-clutch box which shifts superbly. The Alltrack rides very smoothly on motorways and is reasonably composed on more uneven B roads, though there is a slight amount of body roll in the corners. However, the bottom line is that this car has bucketloads of grip thanks to the brilliant 4Motion system, and it definitely doesn’t need snow or sleet to prove that. (INDO MOTORING )

KERRYMAN ORGANISES MONSTER PROTEST’ RE CAR INSURANCE !

Thousands of angry motorists are preparing to protest over soaring motor premiums. The drivers are demanding a fairer deal on cover, after some young drivers have been quoted €1,400 to renew policies. Many drivers have seen premiums double in the last year. Now a group called Ireland Underground, which is being co-ordinated by a Kerry-based travel agent, is organising the monster protest. Up to 6,000 drivers from all over the country are expected to converge on Kildare Street in Dublin on Saturday, July 2, to protest over soaring motor insurance premiums. The protest is being co-ordinated by Kian Griffin using the Ireland-Underground.comwebsite and a Facebook page.He said all drivers, but younger ones in particular, were enraged at being asked to pay double and treble last year’s rates for motor insurance. Mr Griffin, who lives in Killorglin, Co Kerry, said thousands of people contacted him about insurance costs.“I’ve been told that some people are driving without insurance, simply because they can’t afford it. And others are trying to carpool with friends. “The hardest hit would be the under-30s. Having said that, I’ve been talking to 50 and 60-year-olds whose premiums have gone up 300pc or 400pc.” Central Statistics Office figures show the average rise in premiums in the last year has been 34pc, but many are being quoted higher rises.

VOLKSWAGEN STRETCHES RANGE OF ITS ELECTRIC GOLF TO 300KM TO TAKE ON BMW

Volkswagen are to give their electric Golf a dramatic boost in the number of kilometres it can cover on one charge, as they step up the battle to win more buyers and take on the likes of the BMW i3. The substantial expansion of range will coincide with a facelift across the whole Golf range in October. The e-Golf development is also seen as closing the performance gap between it and the newly-upgraded BMW i3 electric car (pictured below). Volkswagen reckon the new e-Golf will manage 300km on one charge. That is up from 190km and, even allowing for the fact that these figures are based on ideal conditions, it still represents a significant increase. It is probably more realistic to expect it to cover 200km in everyday driving. A central factor is a new 36 amp-hour (Ah) lithium ion battery which replaces the current 24Ah. As a result, the battery’s capacity increases by around 48pc. Recharging time remains the same. There will also be a revised electric motor (up 21bhp to 134bhp). The new e-Golf 5dr will be 20kg heavier but a second quicker to 100km/h (9.3secs). It is not known if there will be a price increase. The current one (above) is quoted at €34,145 on-the-road (OTR) on the official Volkswagen website here. That price is possible because of an SEAI grant of €5,000 and a similar amount in VRT rebate. FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KENNEDY CUP ROUND UP: The Kennedy Cup is the highlight of the underage game in the country and it sees 32 Leagues bringing the top 20 players at u14’s to UL for a week of intensive competition. Kerry went into this year’s competition as holders and here is a report of how they got on. The competition starts with three group games and after that it is into the knock section with teams playing in various competitions right down to 32nd spot. And here is the exclusive report on the ¼ Final from Wednesday afternoon: ITS KERRY V GALWAY IN THE KENNEDY CUP ¼ FINALS: Following the Group stages of the 2016 Kennedy Cup it’s a Kerry and Galway ¼ final in the main section of the competition. Kerry progressed following two big wins in their first two games while Galway had two wins over Longford and Inishowen and a draw with Athlone. The Donegal game was a dead rubber for Kerry as they would have needed a heavy defeat to be knocked off top spot while Donegal needed the win to ensure they finished second in the group. Donegal opened the scoring in the 8th minute and were on top and it took a brilliant Eoin Moynihan save to keep the score at 1-0. Kerry then created a multitude of chances and were denied a clear cut penalty before Donegal wrapped up the win with a late second goal. KERRY HIT WICKLOW FOR 6 IN GAYNOR OPENER: A superb opening half saw Kerry get their 2016 Gaynor Cup campaign off to a winning start as they defeated Wicklow 6-2. Kerry were quick off the mark and were ahead after 6 minutes when Leo Gaxha finished a Sean McGrath cross. Jack O’Connor, McGrath and Ted Moloney all went close before Gaxha and McGrath swopped roles as McGrath scored from a Gaxha cross on 15 minutes. It was 3-0 after 21 minutes when Garroid Hassett’s lovely flick header beat the keeper after a Ted Moloney cross. 3 became 4 just before the break when Mervyn Shalamba scored with a low shot, just after coming on as a sub. Kerry continued where they left off at the start of the second half when Shalamba scored his second. Credit to Wicklow they kept battling and pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 51st minute. A Ryan O’Grady free kick was then headed home by a Wicklow defender to make it 6-1 before Wicklow did hit a second in the 57th minute to leave the final score 6-2. KERRY CONQUER CARLOW IN KENNEDY CUP GAME 2: Another blistering start by Kerry saw them lead Carlow 5-0 at the break of their second game at the Kennedy Cup. Mikey Nolan opened the scoring on 9 minutes following good work by Sean McGrath and Mervyn Shalamba. The trio were a handful all game for the Carlow defence and 3 goals in 5 minutes put Kerry in the driving seat. McGrath hit two and the 4th was an og

when a Mikey Nolan shot was deflected in by the Carlow defender. Sean McGrath wrapped up his hat trick just before the break and there was no way back for Carlow. Both sides emptied their benches in the second half and Kerry were unlucky when the cracked two shots off the crossbar and were also denied a penalty. They got their 6th in the 54th minute when Junior Ankomah finished another flowing Kerry move to wrap up the scoring for a 6-0 win. In the other Group 1 game Wicklow recovered from their loss to Kerry to defeat Donegal 1-0 meaning a draw in the last game against Donegal would see Kerry top their group and go through to the Cup quarter finals. KERRY GROUP HOSPITAL SWEEPSTAKES THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHT AT THE TRACK: The Kerry Group Hospital Sweepstake A2 525 begins this Friday which is the centrepiece of the annual Hospital fundraiser that takes place this year on Fri July 8th. Entries are also open for the Denny KDL Champions League A3 500 beginning on June 25th. Kilocrim National School will be fundraising at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Saturday night to raise money for the school’s new astro turf pitch. Guaranteed to be a great night of Fun for all the Family with the Final of the North Kerry Tyre Centre A1 Stakes plus an all sponsored race program, bouncy castle & face painting, best dressed competitions, lots of spot prizes plus music after racing! DENIS EQUALS TIME TRIAL RECORD: Last Thursday night Denis Dunworth, Moda Kingdom Endurance, was on fire in the 3rd Round of the iBike Kerry Time Trial League. He equalled his record time of 25mins 47 seconds for the 20km course. The rest of the top 6 was made up of riders from Tralee Manor West iBike. George Doyle took his second runners up spot in 27.07, again bringing down his time from the previous round as did Tom Gentleman in third. Ciaran Slattery and Jerry McCarthy were in the 28’s with Slattery clocking 28.24 in fourth and McCarthy only 5 seconds further back in 5th. Rounding out the points was Joe Roche in 29.01. Currow CC’s Suzanne O’Sullivan was again the fastest lady in 32.14 ahead of Sinead McCarthy and Anne Marie Barrett. Robbie the fastest u16’s: Robbie Scott of Tralee Manor West iBike was the quickest u16 on the night clocking 30.28 with his club mate Kieran Coggins in second. Sean the fastest u14: Sean Barrett, Tralee Manor West iBike, clocked a very impressive 13.54 to take maximum points in the u16’s in 13.54 for their 9km Time Trial. Next up was Tadgh O’Shea (Killorglin CD) clocking 15.05 with Tralee Manor West’s Eoin Maloney, just one second slower. Kingdom CC’s Ciaran Commane took fourth and was followed across the line by Jaden Leane and Ethan Slattery, both from the CC. Adam’s the man in the u12’s: The u12 sections quickest time was a battle between two Kingdom CC riders. Adam Lenihan took the win

in 17.05 followed home by Eoin Hilliard. Next up it’s the Team Time Trial: Round 4, on Thursday June 30th, is the Team Time Trial with riders joining together in teams of 3 for the seniors and the u16’s and teams of 2 for u12’s and u14’s. Points will be awarded to all riders in the teams in the Time Trial. Overall: Overall positions will be published before the next round, round 4 of 6. For League honours 4 rounds count with times to count in the event of ties. MUNSTER MEDALS: The Munster Time Trial Championships took place in Patrickswell at the weekend and Kerry riders brought home a number of medals. Denis Dunworth will be happy enough with his silver medal considering the time he was off the bike with injury after a crash. Sean’s unstoppable against the clock: Sean Barrett (Tralee Manor West iBike) is the u14 Munster Champion. He has been in lethal form on the Kerry roads this season and carried that into the Munsters. He took the win from fellow Kerry man Tom Moriarty who rides with Kanturk CC and Mark McGarry from Dungarvan CC in third. Kieran’s second in the u16’s: Kieran Coggins (Tralee Manor West iBike) took a good 2nd in a very competitive under 16 Munster championship. MANOR WEST IBIKE’S TURN TO HOST ROAD RACE LEAGUE: Round 4 of the Kerry Road Race League will take place this Thursday night and will be hosted by the Tralee club. The sign-on is in O’Riodas from 6pm and the race for the u12’s and u14’s begins at the Ballycarthy Roundabout where they head directly to Castleisland and onto the finish. The Seniors and u16’s start at the same location but head to Farranfore first and then onto the By Pass and then Fahaduff, Reanagowan and the finish line at the summit. SWIMMERS READY FOR THE WHEEL ROCK: The Wheel Rock Swim, one of the toughest in the Tralee Bay Swimming Clubs World Series will take place on June 23rd at 7.30pm. The start and finish is from Lockes Beach with great spectating from the pier and the race is sponsored by Landers Outdoor World. The swim will take place over a c1400m course and swimmers will be looking to break the record of 18m 35 seconds set by Dylan Fitzgerald in challenging conditions. Dermot Dillane, Ed Murphy and John Quilter took the Group honours. ST BRENDAN’S /OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES: Athletics: The Club had two wonderful days of athletics in Castleisland last weekend. This is where every young athlete wants to be the second weekend of June, where competing is such fun and winning medals is always so difficult. A huge congratulations to our two gold medal

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES winners Jane Akinrinlade U12, 100m and Basit Oyebanji U16, 100m. Well done Jane and Basit who now go forward to the nationals in Athlone in August, all in St. Brendan’s/Oakpark wish you well. Ellie Stack, who is young enough for the event again next year, ran a brilliant race to come 3rd in the U14, 100m. Sean Quilter had a strong finish to earn himself a bronze medal in the U16, 200m and added a certificate for his fourth place in the U16 discus. The U13 mixed relay finished a creditable 4th place and came away with certificates, well done to Jane Akinrinlade, Ellie Stack, Róise O’Donnell, Jack Doyle, Rory O’Halloran and Shane Kelly. Hard luck to our young U10 mixed relay team who were disqualified for a wrong baton change – one of the hazards of this particular discipline, they will have better days. The team was Sorcha Casey, Bríd Duggan, Grace O’Donnell, Conor Lucey, Jack Canty and Liam Cooper. A number of our athletes got through their heats, quarter finals and semi- finals, so well done to all of you. The following reached the final of their respective races which is a huge achievement: Sorcha Casey U10, 100m, Eddie de Quadros U10, hurdles, Rory O’Halloran U12, 100m and Jack Doyle U12,600m. This is the end of the Community Games at local and county level and the club thanks everybody who was involved from the committee, coaches and of course all the participants in all the disciplines. The club will be back in action after the summer and always has room for more volunteers. And of course an eye will be kept on all the Kerry participants in the Munster and National Championships. PARNELL’S NEWS: The u8’s travelled to Abbeydorney on Friday evening with 22 players to take part in the North Kerry u8 Blitz. Both teams played very well and came away with 5 wins and a draw. Well done to all involved. Recruiting: Training takes place on Tuesday and Friday in Caherslee GAA grounds and parents are asked to bring along their children and to try out the game of hurling. Summer Camp: Applications to take part in the July Summer Camp are available from club officials at the same time as training. The Parnells camp is on from the 11th to the 13th of July from 10am to 1pm and will cater for kids from 7 to 14 years of age. Thanks to the Camogie coaches: The club thanks all the camogie coaches players who coaches on the Bring A Friend and Come Try It initiative. It was great to see the county players passing on their skills to the next generation. Thanks also to captain Sara Murphy and former captain Michelle Ni Coisdealbha and their teammates for helping out with the Hurl Smart Week. Trip Away: U14/15 panel travel to Bishopstown GAA club on Saturday next 18th June . The players will join in a coaching session run by the Cork coaches which will then be followed by a friendly match between the Kingdom & Rebels. Coaching Skills: Please check out the new coaching skills video on the clubs Facebook page.

CAMOGIE NEWS: Premier Junior Championship: Austin Stacks Park will play host to the Camogie team in the opening round of the Championship against Roscommon this Sunday. The game throws in at 2.30pm and we wish the management team of Stephen Goggin, Gary O’Brien and Pete Young with Sara Murphy captaining the side. Well done to Amy O’Sullivan from Ciliard who did very well to come in 6th place in the National Feile Skills Competition. Best wishes to Cillard who are in Feile action this weekend away in Waterford. They will face Donard The Glen from Wicklow and Clonea from Waterford in the group stages. North Kerry Blitz: Well done to all the teams who took part in the North Kerry Blitz and to Kilmoyley for providing the excellent facilities. Also thanks to all who provide the much appreciated refreshments after the Blitz. Newcomers: It is great to see 12 first time hurlers who took part in the Parnells Come Try It and hopefully they will all continue with the club. St Pat’s Stories: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,9,14 and 22 and the next jackpot will be e6,500 with the draw in O’Dwyers Bar on Sunday night. Juveniles: The u6’s and u8’s enjoyed their trips to Na Gaeil last week. The u10’s had a busy week taking part in the Fun Go Games in Ardfert and then also played Na Gaeil at the weekend. The u12’s were away to Kilcummin B in a rearranged County League game and recorded their first victory in a cracking game that ended 5-10 to 5-09 after being 8 points down at the break. Seniors: The Seniors took on Ardfert in Round 4 of the County League and lost narrowly 1-20 to 4-12. The Senior B’s went down to Ballydonoghue 2-06 to 2-10. This Friday they face table toppers Clounmacon in Round 5 and on Tuesday take on Desmonds in a Round 3 back game. Feile: All is in place for the visit of the Feile clubs and St Pats are delighted to be welcoming Delaware Gaels from Philadelphia to the area. STACKS STORIES: The Bord na nOg Summer Camp takes place from July 4th to 8th in Connolly Park with the Austin Stacks Autumn Camp on from August 2nd to 5th. The u6’s and 8’s train as normal this week while the u10’s are back from a very enjoyable trip to Glanmire. They also played in the Go Games at Na Gaeil during the week. The u12’s had a great trip to Naas and the u13’s to Dublin. The uy14’s have a busy time with local competitions and both the A and B teams are in action this week. The u16’s play in Division 1 of the County League starting this week. The Feile Quiz: The Feile Quiz is on this Friday night June 17th and all support will be welcomed. Scholarships: The GAA at various levels has paid out e870 by way of Scholarships to young members of The Rock and this will enable them to enjoy a few weeks in the Gaeltacht.

Sunday last saw Kerry Motor Club host Round 2 of the KK Hydraulics Tralee 2016 Autosolo Championships at the Tralee Racecourse. Maurice McElligott Clerk of the Course for the event and his team of officials had eight demanding and technically challenging tests laid out for the sixteen competitors who turned up to do battle on a very wet morning. A few of the regulars most notably Brendan Farmer from Tralee the 2015 Champion was missing due to work commitments. Corkman Derek Butler, back after 2 years, set the pace in his 1600cc Starlet and at the half way point was 17 seconds ahead of fellow Skibereen man Liam Croston and Robert Beamish in the 1300cc Mini with Kerry’s Gerard Breen just 2 seconds adrift. Breen, from Currow, was back competing after a 5 year layoff in his 1600cc Micra. Butler too the win by 28 seconds with Breen taking the Top Kerry driver prize and Limerick’s Stephen O’Connell the top Junior and 9th overall. Chris Faulconbridge and Noel Murphy from Abbeydorney also did well in their Classes. ON THE GREEN: TRALEE CG: The MC3 at Killlen Course sponsored by Tilloston was won by Brendan Long on 39 points followed by David Fitzgerald and Austin Hynes. The Best Gross went to Fergal O’Sullivan and the +18 handicap to Denis O’Leary. The Bar B Que Scramble was won by Rory Doyle, Hugh O’Callaghan and Michael Hennebry. Second were Kieran Crowely, Ronan Shanahan and Breda Walsh and 3rd was the team of Mark Teahan, Kieran Rutledge and Jerome McCarthy. Ladies: The Ladies Exchange Day went to Mary Savage with Fiona Lally second and Norah Quinlan 3rd. KERRY RELINQUISH THE KENNEDY CUP: Kerry’s reign as Kennedy Cup holders came to an end in the cruelest manner when they lost the quarter final to Galway 2-1 with the last kick of the game. Kerry created the better chances throughout the game and took the lead in the 13th minute when Sean McGrath held off 3 defenders to find room to shoot low to the net. However Kerry failed to add to that single goal and paid the price for that early in the second half. In the 36th Galway equalised when a free kick took a deflection off the wall which took it past the Kerry keeper. Again Kerry had chances to tale back the lead but Lady Luck deserted the Kingdom, especially when Mervyn Shalamba cracked a shot off the crossbar with the keeper beaten. And so with both sides ready to name their penalty shooters, their is no extra time, Galway got winner which squeezed past Eoin Moynihan. Kerry can be very proud of their efforts and at this stage on Wednesday still have 3 games to play. The age into the semi-finals of the Plate, the competition to see who finishes 5th to 8th. They take on South Dublin in their next game on this Thursday morning.
