LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES CCTV FOOTAGE IN THE AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA Tim has set up a new business and is busy with his new shop, unfortunately there seems to be a shoplifter who comes to his shop. This is money lost and very frustrating for Tim at this important first few months. Tim has the alleged shoplifter recorded on his CCTV system and was seriously considering putting it up on his Facebook page to ‘name and shame’ this person which would reach hundreds of people not to mention possible thousands of likes and shares. So what is the legal stance on this matter? Under the Data Protection Acts 1988 as the owner of a CCTV system you are deemed to be the data controller and you need to be able to justify the obtaining and use of personal data by means of a CCTV system. A system used to control the outside and inside of your business is obviously easy to justify but you must remember that recognisable images (which is a broad area as it doesn’t even have to be a clear image of a person’s face, just fall into a certain set of criteria in such a way that the individual in recognisable) captured by CCTV systems are personal data, they are therefore subject to the provisions of the Data Protection Acts and the Data Protection Commissioners said sharing of personal data in relation to individuals is restricted unless there is a legal basis to do so or the individual consents to share it. If a person suffers damage as a result of a breach of their data protection rights, they may complain to the data protection commissioner and sue for damages through the courts. Responsible management of CCTV means that it must only be used for a legitimate purpose. If material was used without consent or authorisation on facebook it could have serious consequences for Tim particularly if the upload resulted in a person being bullied and vilified online and it later turned out to be mistaken identity. The Data Protection Commissioner has issued guidance on CCTV which demands that its use be proportional to the need and that the user has a CCTV policy and has completed a Risk Assessment, A Privacy Impact Assessment, Documentary evidence of previous incidents giving rise to security/health and safety concerns and clear signage indicating image recording in operation. Legal Quip : Change is the law of life and those who only look to the past or present are sure to miss the future John F Kennedy Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. RETAILERS CALL FOR A 3% BREXIT REDUCTION IN VAT TO PREVENT MORE FAILURES

Retail Excellence the largest retail representative body in Ireland is calling on Government to reduce VAT by 3% in Budget 2018 to protect retailers from the worst excesses of Brexit. In their Budget 2018 submission titled “Retail: Sustaining and Growing an Economy”, Retail Excellence are calling for a general cut in consumption taxes, the cost of doing business, increased funding to get retailers online, increased infrastructural investment, Garda resources, town renewal funding, investment in the Home Renewal Scheme, introduction of measures to increase our competitiveness, and improved access to finance in the upcoming Budget. Spokesperson for the organisation Lorraine Higgins

4

TRALEE ADVERTISER

said: “With external headwinds like Brexit and the limping on of negotiations between the UK and the EU, Ireland is already left exposed and this will impact on the sustainability of economic growth trends. While many industries talk about the potential impact of Brexit, it is clear retail is already being affected. Our quarterly Trading Reports compiled in conjunction with our partner member, Grant Thornton, have recorded three successive quarters of decline primarily as a consequence of sterling devaluation and a migration to online shopping. Therefore, it is critical measures are implemented to counteract the foregoing and Retail Excellence’s Budget 2018 proposals are formulated to deal with these challenges”. “Our priority issue is a reduction in the 23% rate of VAT which was introduced as a financial emergency measure. It needs to be cut by 3% in one fell swoop as we believe incremental reductions Friday 7th July 2017

would be a piecemeal response given previous experience has shown small reductions do not tend to have a positive impact on consumer spend. High VAT rates impact on consumer confidence and sentiment which is exacerbated further by the negative VAT differential between us and the UK. This has contributed to the further development of online shopping trends which has led to e600,000 of spend every hour being fulfilled by businesses operating outside the country. It goes without saying, our unique geography exacerbates this situation further. This leak of spend to the UK predominately is hurting Ireland, is unsustainable and will cause retail failure if adequate Brexit-

proofed measures are not implemented in Budget 2018”.“ “We at Retail Excellence are focused on assisting retailers grow, thereby increasing sales, employment opportunities and ultimately return to the Exchequer. Our Budget 2018 submission seeks to provide a clear set of proposals which we strongly feel are critical to ensure further economic and employment trajectory for the betterment of all of Ireland, both urban and rural”.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... GPS CANNOT CHARGE MEDICAL CARD HOLDERS FOR BLOOD TESTS

Kerry Sinn Féin councilor Toireasa Ferris has advised medical card holders that they should not be charged for blood tests. Councillor Ferris stated I have been contacted by a number of constituents, one of whom is a patient recovering from cancer, I have told them and I would urge anyone in a similar situation to contact the HSE for a full reimbursement which they are entitled to. Under the Health Act 1970, it is stated a general practitioner may not charge the patient if the patient is eligible for free general medical services, including in the event that a patient needs bloods to be taken to either assist in the process of diagnosis or monitor a diagnosed condition. Patients have enough to worry about than being billed for something they are entitled to free of charge.”

KILLARNEY HOUSE ..ANOTHER TOP ATTRACTION FOR KERRY! The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, and the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, last Monday performed the official opening of Killarney House, following a major renovation project and significant investment by the State. Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Paul Coghlan, has welcomed the official opening of Killarney House. Killarney House was officially opened this week to the public by Minister for Arts, Heritage and Culture, Heather Humphreys TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD. Speaking following the official opening, Senator Coghlan

said, “The restored gardens were opened to the public last year and I am delighted that we are now seeing the opening of the rooms of the house with original furniture of Lord Castlerosse, Earls of Kenmare and “The Man Who Built Washington”, John McShain. “In July 2011 the then Minister for Tourism, Leo Varadkar, announced a €7 million restoration package which essentially saved the house from certain ruin. Now seven years later, Killarney House is officially open and it has the potential to become the top tourist attraction in the south west. The garden room, dining room, drawing room, and living room have now all been fully

restored in period style. “It is vital that we protect our national built heritage and Killarney House is an excellent example of how the State can save our historic buildings with targeted and sustained investment.

“This building has been magnificently restored and is a great credit to everyone who worked on it. The house and gardens are but a stone’s throw from the centre of town and are an absolute sea of tranquillity.”

Movie Review

with Adam Kavanagh AKA Mr Movie reviews

TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT Director: Michael Bay Starring: Mark Whalberg, Anthony Hopkins, Laura Haddok, Josh Duhamel

The Last Knight is the fifth instalment of the juggernaut that is the Transformers franchise. The last four films have earned upwards of 4 billion dollars worldwide so a fifth film was inescapable. This film is similar to its predecessors, as the evil transformers try to repair their homeland by destroying and replacing earth. If you have seen previous outings, the plot probably sounds familiar as they recycle it for each movie. Unfortunately, they are still planning to release more of these “films” in the coming years. Michael Bay returns for a fifth and final time in the director’s chair and most people will blame him for the awful reception the film received, but it really isn’t his fault. The film’s visuals are average even if it is hard to see what’s going at times in the battle of special effects. The real problem here is with the script as it is a mess. It’s a mix of confusing dialogue, boring exposition and badly timed humour. The plot is very formulaic and is very predictable. However, the CGI in this film is exceptional although at times feels overloaded especially in the action sequences. The actors in the movie all give average performances with the exception of Anthony Hopkins. He seems to be having a little fun in the role as a crazy scientist helping Cade Yeager (Mark Whalberg). Overall the film is a waste of time and really has almost no redeeming qualities. Hopefully the next instalment will be better. Sigh. Mr. Movie’s Fact: This is the most expensive Transformers film made, having a budget of 260 million.

PEOPLE OF KERRY ARE REMINDED TO NOMINATE IRELAND’S MOST DEDICATED PHARMACISTS Deadline for nominations for the Clanwilliam Pharmacist Awards is July 21st The Clanwilliam Pharmacist Awards have launched for 2017 and the organisers are today reminding the people of Kerry to nominate pharmacists who go above and beyond for their patients. It is an opportunity to recognise a pharmacist who has had a positive impact in the life of an individual or even a whole community while performing their duty. “We all know that a pharmacist is more than a dispenser of medicines, but rather a trusted adviser who has the patient’s best interests at heart. Today we are calling on the public to tell us about their standout interactions with pharmacists around the country. We want you to tell us what they did to improve your health or to positively impact your life. At the Clanwilliam Pharmacist Awards 2017, a special Patient Nominated Award will be presented to the pharmacist who has had most impact,” said Eileen Byrne, Managing Director, Clanwilliam Health. 10

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Those interested in suggesting a pharmacist deserving of this recognition are encouraged to fill out the online nomination form before July 21st. The winning pharmacist will be recognised in the company of their peers, with over 300 representatives from all sectors of pharmacy, including pharmacists in hospital, community, industry and academic settings, attending the Clanwilliam Pharmacist Awards 2017. The Patient Nominated Award, sponsored by the Irish Pharmacy Union, is one of ten categories including the Professional Excellence Award and the Young Pharmacist of the Year Award which will be announced on Saturday, November 18th in the Mansion House, Dublin. “The Clanwilliam Pharmacists Awards 2017 will provide an opportunity to recognise the phenomenal work which takes place across all pharmacy sectors every day in Ireland. It’s important to dwell on the Friday 7th July 2017

contribution of the pharmacy profession to healthcare in Ireland as a whole, and also to recognise the individuals and teams who are nominated in each category. No award is more important than the one nominated by patients – pharmacists serve the public so to be nominated in this way is seen by the entire pharmacy community to be a distinguished honour. Another noteworthy aspect

of the awards is the support they offer for the Pharmacy Benevolent Fund, which helps those who have been associated with pharmacy and who are now in need of assistance,” said Daragh Connolly, President of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU).e difference in your life, please do consider nominating them for this award,” said Clare Long of Foynes Pharmacy.

Physical, nutritional, and psychological development are key to success in and beyond the athletic arena. This camp aims to educate student athletes through practical settings and tutorials to visualise the path way ahead in their athletic development. “These 2 camps are starting on July 24th (Boys camp ) and July 31st (Girls camp ), each course will run for 5 mornings . PEDEL ON FOR NCBI!

The son of a Kerryman who has completed arduous cycle challenges to raise funds for NCBI is set to follow his example by setting himself a tough task of his own. Niall Crowley, whose parents come from Kenmare, is now set to complete his own cycle, peddling the 296 KM from Dublin to Kerry in one day! The Aircraft Engineer who lives in Luxembourg says he was so inspired by his Dad’s achievements for the sight loss charity that he determined to copy his example and do his own. “Well Dad did the Gold Coast 1,000 and the California 500 a good few years ago now so he has set the bar. My Grandmother had Retinitis Pigmentosa and that is where the interest in the NCBI and its excellent work comes from”. Niall is optimistic about his chances of completing his cycle saying he has been practising hard, “Well I should have the legs to do it . I was in the Alps last week doing a bit of practise so it’s looking good”. “I know the winds going South West can be hard but I hope to be done and dusted in 14 hours”. Cheering him on for the challenge on the 20th July will be his co cyclist Killarney man, Ger O’ Donaghue and Niall says that both men are looking forward to a bit of rest and relaxation in the scenic country after their marathon cycle. “We will enjoy the apres cycle that’s for sure” laughs Niall! WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS JOIN CORK AIRPORT DELEGATION TO US TO FORGE FURTHER LINKS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. John Sheahan and Deputy CEO of Kerry County Council, John Griffin joined Cork Airport on a delegation to Boston/ Providence this week Also on the delegation is Kerry South TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD. Joining the delegation, led by Cork Airport’s Managing Director, Niall MacCarthy and accompanied by local and regional business and tourism stakeholders, the trip intended to forge fundamental links with Atlantic neighbours following Cork Airport’s inaugural service to Boston/ Providence. Niall MacCarthy commented: “While it may be a short trip to the US, we have arranged a full schedule of meetings on Friday(today) as well as a formal reception with the Governor of Rhode Island, Gina Raimondo, at the State Capital. The trip is an excellent opportunity for us to build on the relationships that we have

formed over the past number of years, when we have been trying to secure the route. There is tremendous desire in the US for direct access to the South of Ireland both from a business and tourism perspective. “Now that this superb new service is up and running,

it is crucially important that it is supported both here in Munster and in Rhode Island. For our part, we will do everything we can to ensure that both regions’ economies feel the benefits”. The delegation also comprises representatives from Cork Chamber of Commerce, Cork

Business Association, Irish Hotels Federation, Cork City and County Councils, Irish Aviation Authority and regional travel trade. The delegation flew out at 16:20 on Thursday, 6th July and return at 08:30 on Saturday, 8th July.

GARVEY’S SUPERVALU TRALEE WINS NATIONAL ‘BEST FOR FRESH’ AWARD Garvey’s SuperValu in Tralee has picked up the award for Best for Fresh large supermarket in Ireland for 2017. The annual checkout awards, which took place in Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel are the only awards ceremony to recognise excellence in fresh food retailing in Ireland. According to editor of Checkout magazine Jenny Whelan “The stores acknowledged at the Checkout Best for Fresh awards are the real standard bearers when it comes to excellence in fresh produce retailing. When it comes to fresh produce, the bar continues to be raised, and those retailers rewarded here today can truly be said to be amongst the best in Ireland, as well as in Europe” Winning this title recognises the exceptional fresh food 18

standards of the Tralee store which competed against stores from across the country. On receipt of the award, Kevin McCarthy Managing Director of the Garvey Group paid tribute to the team at the Tralee store. He acknowledged their passion and enthusiasm for fresh food within the store and also to the quality of produce now being supplied in Kerry by local food producers. “In 2016 we invested €2.2million and completely revamped our store demonstrating our long-standing commitment to the community and economy in Tralee. What makes the award even Friday 7th July 2017

more special is that we are celebrating our 25 year anniversary here in our Tralee store and it’s our second year

in a row winning the award as our Dingle store won it last year, so celebrations all round”

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES, FRANCE, AND BRAZIL ARE ON A PLANE

At one point, the president of the United States sticks his hand out the window and proclaims, “We are flying over the US.” The others ask how he knows. “Because I just touched the Statue of Liberty.” A while later, the president of France sticks his hand out the window and says, “We are flying over France!” The other two ask how he knows, to which he replies, “Because I just touched the Eiffel Tower!” Finally, hours later, the president of Brazil sticks his hand out the window and states, “Ah, now we are flying over Brazil.” The others ask how he knows. “Because they just took my watch.”

TROPHY WIFE Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful 25 year-old blonde who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful looks and charm. She hangs onto Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?” Bob replies, “Girlfriend? She’s my wife!” They’re amazed, but continue to ask. “So, how did you persuade her to marry you?” “I lied about my age”, Bob replies. “What, did you tell her you were only 50?” Bob smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”

I opened the fridge. The light came on. The beer was cold. What the HELL is she talking about?

MY WIFE WON’T LIKE IT One day I accidentally overturned my golf buggy. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and called out, Are you okay, what’s your name?” “Its Jack , and I’m Okay thanks,” I replied. “Jack , forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while, and I’ll help you get the cart up later.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” I answered, but I don’t think my wife would like it.” “Oh, come on,” Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty, very sexy and persuasive... I was weak. “Well okay,” I finally agreed, and added, “but my wife won’t like it.” After a restorative brandy, and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host. “I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.” “Don’t be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile, She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?” “Under the cart!”

I WAS DIGGING A HOLE IN MY BACKYARD... I was digging a hole in my backyard when I found a box filled with gold coins. In my excitement I ran back in the house to tell my wife when I remembered why I was digging a hole.

HOW DOES AN APPLE WATCH OWNER KNOW THAT IT’S MIDDAY? It’s already run out of battery.

THE NOTE I came home from the golf course today, and found a note my wife had left on the refrigerator. IT’S NOT WORKING. I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. GONE TO STAY WITH MY SISTER

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re having a fab week. This week i’ll be talking all about my current favourite beauty products.

LANCÔME ADVANCED GENIFIQUE SERUM

KYLIE JENNER LIP KITS

Advanced Génifique Key Features Advanced Génifique Serum targets 10 signs of youthful-looking skin. Up until last year I had never really used any serums on my skin. Until I found out that serums penetrate 5 layers of the skin and moisturisers only penetrate 2. So I started using this once a day every day after my toner, my skin feels so much softer, is glowing and my makeup is sitting so much better throughout the day.

I am a huge fan of these. They stay on so well on my lips, the packaging is fab and they’re such fab quality. I now have the shades, Candy K, Dolce K, Mary Jo K, King, Leo, Brown Sugar & the Candy K Gloss. If you haven’t tried them and are thinking about it, I highly recommend them.

ARDELL WISPIE LASHES These are hands down, my absolute ride or die, FAVOURITE lashes! They’re €5 in Penny’s & I’m on my 4th wear of my current set. You can get so much wear out of them, they’re not too dramatic for day time but still add that hint of glam. I’ve honestly had people ask did I get lash extensions & complimenting them, well I do work in Makeup so it’s normal for people to notice, but still. Go to Penneys, get yourself some Wispies & duo glue, and thank me later. That’s it for this week! Next week I will be doing a Holiday Skincare and Skincare feature so watch out for that!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS!

I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! After last week’s page, I want to talk about Fitness for Beginners, as we were all beginners once. So this week I’m just going to go back to basics, how to get into fitness if you’re a beginner, or to get into a stricter/new fitness routine. 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

Start small: Start by making small changes to your food or exercise plan. If you try to make loads of giant changes at once, you will more than likely fail. Trust me, I know. Set realistic goals: Like starting small, this one is essential. If you set realistic goals that are genuinely achievable you’re more likely to succeed. If your goals are unrealistic they’ll seem too far away or too hard to reach and you’ll get easily unmotivated. Get help: I mean professional fitness help, if you feel you need it. There is nothing better to help you reach your goals than advice from a professional who knows exactly what you should do. You have to want it: If you’re starting a fitness regime, you have to want it for you. Not to try and please or impress someone else. Unless you want it hard enough, you won’t stay motivated. Do it so that you’re a better and healthier version of yourself. BALANCE IS KEY: It is so important to remember that you need to have a balance in everything you do in life. If you are too restrictive with your food or too strict with your training, it won’t work. WATER: With any new fitness regime, it is sooooo sooooo important to be properly hydrated. There are so many health benefits to proper hydration!

Any gym supplements that I use I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla! I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017

Anyone for Dessert? BBQ Style!

For those that like to BBQ, dessert is the one place most go for a ‘ready made’ or pre-made option so here are two simple ideas that anyone can do on the grill

GRILLED PEACHES

WITH BLACK PEPPER AND BASIL-LIME SYRUP

The black pepper adds a surprising aromatic and spicy flavor to the sweet grilled peaches.

INGREDIENTS

• • • • • • •

1/2 cup brown sugar, plus more, for sprinkling 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 cup basil leaves, plus thinly sliced basil, for garnish Vegetable oil, for grilling 4 large peaches, quartered and pitted Freshly ground black pepper

METHOD

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the 1/2 cup brown sugar with the water and stir until dissolved. Turn off the heat and add the lime juice and basil leaves. Let stand for at least 15 minutes or up to 1 hour, then discard the basil leaves.Light a grill or preheat a grill pan over medium heat; lightly oil the grates.Lightly sprinkle the peaches with brown sugar and grill cut side down until dark brown grill marks form, about 2 minutes per cut side. Transfer the peaches to bowls and season with a little black pepper. Spoon some of the syrup on top, sprinkle with basil leaves and serve.

GRILLED MAPLE-BUTTER APRICOTS WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM Can’t find apricots? Try this recipe with peaches or plums for a fantastic ice cream topping

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

3 tablespoons pure maple syrup 3 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 6 ripe apricots, halved lengthwise and pitted Vanilla ice cream (for serving)

METHOD

Prepare a grill for medium, direct .Cook maple syrup, butter, vanilla, and salt in a small pan over low heat, whisking occasionally, until butter is melted.Grill apricots cut side down, brushing with syrup mixture as they cook, until lightly charred and tender, 8–10 minutes. Transfer to a platter cut side up, and brush with additional syrup mixture. Let apricots cool to room temperature, then serve with ice cream.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: MEDICAL CARD AND DOMICILIARY CARE ALLOWANCE Question

I’m getting Domiciliary Care Allowance for my daughter so I was happy to hear that medical card cover was being extended to children who qualify for the payment. The medical card application form seems to require a lot of information that doesn’t appear relevant in this situation. Is there another way to apply? Answer

You don’t need to complete the medical card application form to get the medical card for your daughter. The medical card for children who qualify for Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) isn’t subject to a means test so information about your income is not required. Instead, you can register your child online by going to the website medicalcard.ie and clicking on ‘Medical Cards (DCA)’. The site also has a form you can download if you prefer to apply by post. You will need to provide the following information: • Your Personal Public Service (PPS) Number and contact details • Your child’s PPS Number and date of birth • The name and address of your child’s GP The website includes a list of GPs who are participating in the scheme. If your GP of choice is accepting applications electronically, your child’s details will be sent to them. If not, you will be emailed a copy of the relevant details, which you can print out and bring to the GP. Once the GP accepts your child to their GMS patient list, the registration will be finalised by the National Medical Card Unit and a medical card in your child’s name will be sent to you. If you have questions about the medical card, you can call the information line on Lo-call 1890 252 919.

TORQUING CARS! TOP GEAR’S ‘REASONABLY-PRICED CAR’ GOES ON SALE

The Kia Cee’d used on Top Gear’s ‘Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car’ segment between 2010 and 2013 has been listed on AutoTrader for £4,500. Having been driven around the Top Gear track by more than 40 celebrities during its time on the programme, it’s not the kind of car we’d ordinarily recommend buying. Its former drivers include Rowan Atkinson, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Rupert Grint and Michael Fassbender, not to mention The Stig himself. The ‘Cee-apostrophe-D’ has 7,200 miles on the clock, around 4,000 of which have been since it left the Top Gear track and went into private ownership. Safety modifications include a full roll cage (which prevents the rear seats from being used) and racing harnesses, as well as Corbeau bucket seats. Underneath, it’s still a 1.6-litre petrol Kia with eight months MOT. We can’t think of a better-value piece of automotive history.

THE FRIGHTENING FIGURES BEHIND TAKATA’S AIRBAG FIASCO

TAKATA may have gone bust this week, but its explosive airbag legacy will haunt us for years to come. The Japanese airbag maker filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo and the US, swamped with lawsuits and recall costs. Its faulty airbag inflators are linked to the deaths of at least 16 people. The inflators can explode with too much force and shoot out shrapnel. Most of Takata’s assets will be bought by rival Key Safety Systems for $1.6bn. It has been one disaster after another for years now - for those affected by the explosions, the car makers and the company itself. The numbers behind the saga are frightening: • At least 180 people have been injured by the airbags. Some experts say a lot more have been hurt. • So far 100m inflators have been recalled worldwide. • Tens and tens of millions of vehicles are affected. • Recalls are being handled by 19 automakers. • Only 22pc of the 69m recalled in the US have been replaced. • The fact there are still 54m on US roads means more people will get hurt, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says. • At least $1bn from the sale will go towards settling criminal charges for concealing inflator problems. (Irish Independent)

JAGUAR E-PACE – WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THE NEW BRITISH SUV

The Jaguar E-Pace will be officially revealed on July 13,in the UK but it’s already generating a huge amount of interest. It follows in the tyre tracks of Jag’s phenomenally successful F-Pace, and will be the brand’s second SUV ever. Details are thin on the ground at the moment, but we do know that the E-Pace will be competitively priced. The current UK figure stands at £28,500, putting it broadly in line with the cheaper of its German rivals. It’s also significantly cheaper than the F-Pace, which starts at around £34,000. It’ll be available with two- or four-wheel-drive, and will use the same platform as both the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. We anticipate a predominance of diesel powertrains, with several Ingenium oilburners of varying displacements. There will also be at least one efficient turbocharged petrol engine, and we expect there’ll be a hybrid of some sort too – details to be confirmed. Jaguar’s design language is apparent. Similarities between this and the F-Pace SUV mean that the E-Pace will be a muscular, masculine SUV, with athletic flanks and a clearly defined silhouette. The haunches are dramatic, and the lights are very similar to those of the sporty F-Type coupe. This is Jaguar’s second foray into the SUV market. As part of a global sales offensive, Jag’s F-Pace fuelled a whopping 83 per cent increase in the amount of cars the brand shifted in 2016/2017. The smaller, cheaper E-Pace should increase this figure further by chipping away at the market dominance of Audi, BMW and certain non-premium brands.

TORQUING CARS! FESTIVAL OF SPEED 2017: PORSCHE 356 FETCHES £919,900

One of the all-time great Porsches, a 1957 356A Carrera Speedster GS/GT, sold for £919,900 (including buyer’s premium) at the Bonhams auction during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It had been estimated to fetch £900,000 to £1,000,000. Between 1955 and 1959, only 152 or so Carrera Speedsters were produced, and the one offered at Goodwood is one of only three right-hand drive examples. The origins of the Carrera Speedster date back to 1954, when a young engineer in Porsche’s competition department put a four-cam Carrera engine into a modified 356 Coupé. The vehicle won the Liège-Rome-Liège rally, one of the toughest such events in Europe, and Porsche realised that it had created something special. The origins of the Carrera Speedster date back to 1954, when a young engineer in Porsche’s competition department put a fourcam Carrera engine into a modified 356 Coupé. The vehicle won the LiègeRome-Liège rally, one of the toughest such events in Europe, and Porsche realised that it had created something special. With a string of awards from concours across the world, the auction house suggests that this has to be one of the most desirable Porsche 356s available. Other stand-out Porsche 911s in the sale include a 2010 977 GT2 RS that’s estimated to fetch £290,000 to £340,000; a 1993 964 Turbo X88 (£250,000£300,000); and a 1967 Porsche 911 S (£240,000-£280,000). There’s also a 356 Speedster from 1955, estimated at £250,000-£300,000. My favourite, however, is a 1978 911 (Type 930) Turbo Coupé formerly owned by Peter Sellers, estimated to fetch £60,000 to £80,000. Surely a small price to pay for a fantastic car once driven by a comedy genius.

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER

I am thinking of buying a Mercedes C350e hybrid saloon with my retirement income, hoping it will last a long time. Do hybrids last well without incurring expensive costs? PC A C350e petrol plug-in hybrid makes a lot of sense. Toyota Prius hybrids have been clocking up half a million miles with very little trouble, so petrol hybrids are the way to go.

NEED FOR SPEED

I’m currently leasing a Skoda Octavia vRS (diesel) and want to replace it with a new car when the three-year term ends. What can you recommend with a decent boot, petrol or hybrid, 0-60mph in 7.5s or better and an average economy of at least 35mpg? I’m currently paying £255/month, which includes all maintenance/servicing and road fund licence. I would be prepared to pay up to £280/290 per month. PP If you’re leasing for three years, then anticipated problems with diesel emissions systems are likely to affect the car’s subsequent owner, not you. Given which, there’s no reason not to go for another Octavia vRS diesel or petrol, VW Golf GTI or a Seat Leon Cupra. You simply won’t get that level of performance out of the average petrol hybrid.

ASSETS TRIPPER

My 2006 Volvo V70R has done 145,000 miles. It has been expensive to tax and run, but has never needed much attention and has a full service history. I no longer need such a big car so am going to buy something smaller (and more economical). Is the Volvo worth keeping as a potentially appreciating asset or should I just offer it in part-exchange? TG Even if V70Rs become collectible, your 145,000 miles goes against any significant increase in value. Reluctantly, I’d part with it.

These will join the 20 League of Ireland clubs and the controversial selection of St. Kevin’s Boys to make up a 24 team, split into 4 groups of 6 for the short season commencing on August 20th. There will then be a review before the full season begins on March 2018. The U15 League will be the entry level to elite football on the player pathway that already includes the SSE Airtricity Under 17 League, Under 19 League, First Division and Premier Division. FAI High Performance Director Ruud Dokter welcomed the introduction of the U15 League, saying: “Having the Under 15 League in place further develops the pathway to elite football for the country’s most talented footballers. This now means that the very best Under 15 players throughout the country will now play against the highest quality opposition, thus enhancing their development as they progress to top level senior football. “I would like to congratulate each of the schoolboy clubs and Leagues who successfully applied to forge partnerships with SSE Airtricity League clubs.” St Kevin’s Boys will compete in the shortened season after agreeing to work towards creating a partnership with Bohemian FC, which will allow St Kevin’s Boys to join existing partnerships into the National Leagues. This is where things have not run smoothly for the FAI as the other Schoolboy clubs were told that they could only take part is they aligned with a League of Ireland club. However with St Kevin’s been given an exemption the other 7 clubs are talking about taking legal action which could delay the start. However from a Kerry point of view this is not something they can worry about. A meeting of the

clubs took place this week with the selection of a manager and coaching team and the holding of trials expected to be the next steps along the way. This is a hugely positive step for Kerry’s young players and will mean a change in emphasis and focus in the ETP’s. But the League’s main focus has to be the development of the player and this will now see our best 15’s playing against the countries best. Kerry faced Cork City in the u17’s twice this week – losing 5-0 in the League game while the other game was after our print deadline. But it was obvious from the kick-off of the difference in physique between the players. Kerry are finding their feet at the top level of the 17’s in their second year but there is no doubt that having a 15’s team going forward will aid the 17’s and possible in the coming years a 19’s squad. There is a conversation that needs to be had in the near future in Kerry re the whole League of Ireland set-up within the county and the best way forward. But that is for another day. For now the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League can take great satisfaction from being one of only 3 League in the new 15’s League of Ireland. SOCCER SHORTS: In the busiest weekend of the soccer season ahead of this Friday nights Awards night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there were big celebrations in Tralee and Killarney. Killarney Athletics first ever Premier League win in their 53 years was wildly cheered by the huge blue support at their final replay against Killarney Celtic. With Athletic joining recent winners like Celtic, Dingle Bay and Castleisland there should be no lack of motivation for Tralee sides to try and win back the Denny Premier trophy. One of those that in a year or two could be challenging for a Premier A title is Tralee Celtic. They are up to Denny Premier B after their fourth League title in a row. There was nothing between them and fellow Tralee side Mitchels Avenue with an own goal deciding the game. Friday 7th July 2017

Both of these sides will also meet each other in the Greyhound Bar semi-final this Sunday at Mounthawk Park in what should be another tight encounter. Both will be dreaming of walking out in a Cup final against either Castleisland or Killarney Athletic. Listowel Celtic are celebrating an impressive u17 and u18 League double as they saw off Killarney Celtic in both. Kevin has blown his final whistle: One of the best referees seen in Kerry, Kevin O’Regan, has retired from the game. As well as doing many of the top games in the KDL Kevin has officiated at the highest level including in the League of Ireland and doing a Munster Junior Cup final at Turners Cross. Kevin will not be lost from the game as he will become an FAI Referee Observer next October. KERRY UNTROUBLED IN RECORDING DOUBLE: Plenty has been written and spoken this week on Kerry GAA’s double Munster title wins. And on spoken reports on the game it was great to hear Weeshie Fogarty reviewing the game on Terrace Talk. Weeshie has suffered a bit with ill health over the last year but from listening to him he is well on the mend and has lost none of his passion for sport. On the games and the very talented Kerry minors proved that a 5-in-a-row is something that can be achieved as they completely dominated Clare. This squad has class in every position and on the bench and it will take a great team to stop them. Of course with minors sometimes they can beat themselves but Peter Keane and his management team will be working hard to ensure this does not happen. Kerry don’t know the date of their quarter final or their opponents and many of these players will have a busy time before then with the Minor County Championship – where those not on the squad will also be looking to catch the eye of the management. Kerry also have the u17 All Ireland semi-final to look forward to. The Kerry seniors looked very sharp as they easily saw off Cork in

a thoroughly professional manner. The movement and accuracy of the forwards will certainly have been noticed by defenders in other counties. What probably makes Kerry even stronger than other years is that they now have a very strong bench and Eamonn Fitzmaurice has lots of options in who to start and as importantly what team he wants to finish with. The management team will be hoping all the players come through the County Championship weekend unscathed. Kerry next outing is the All Ireland quarter final and in the complicated Championship we now have the Kingdom could meet any number of counties. Mayo play Clare and Donegal face Meath this weekend and both are expected to win. If they do they will then play Cork and the beaten Connaught finalist – either Galway or Roscommon – with winners of the Round 4 Qualifier clash meeting either Kerry or the Connacht champions. All clear I hope! JUNIORS WIN: Earlier in the week the Kerry Juniors retained their Munster title after a thrilling extra time win away to Cork. For a while it looked unlikely that the Kingdom would get the result but they dug deep and pulled it out of the hat in the end. ST BRENDAN’S THE ONLY TRALEE SIDE IN ACTION: In Round 3 of the aforementioned Garvey’s Senior County Championship sees St Brendan’s facing East Kerry this Saturday evening in Austin Stacks Park at 7.15pm while the following day Legion take on West Kerry at 2pm in the same venue. There is a double header in the Fitzgerald Stadium with Feale Rangers facing Kenmare Shamrocks at 2pm and Dingle taking on South Kerry at 3.45pm From a Tralee point of view St Brendan’s will have to put their defeat to Dr Crokes behind them as they face another tough opponent. The latter’s defeat of a fancied Mid Kerry side will see East Kerry go in as favourites but it should be a tight encounter. CHAMPIONS ON TRACK IN HURLING’S BLUE RIBBON: Kilmoyley will again be the team to beat in the Garvey’s County Senior Hurling Championship and they got things off to a winning start in a comprehensive win over Crotta O’Neills 3-16 to 0-14. And it was even more impressive as Kilmoyley started without four of the starting 15 from last year’s County final replay. The game was tight in the first half but the champions pulled away in the second period. The other game between St Brendan’s and Causeway ended in a high scoring draw 2-18 to 3-15. Caiuseway had a late chance to win

He is on 25 points, 5 behind the leader Conor Kissane from Killarney CC. The Tralee club are well represented in the top 10 with Ross Culloty, Shane Fleming, Ciaran Slattery and Ronan O’Shea holding places 5th to 8th. The Tralee Manor West iBike club hosted their round of the Road Race League on Thursday night and we will have the details of that next week.
