MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Eoin is a US citizen living in America born in America but his parents are Irish and US Citizens and he is wondering if he can become an Irish Citizen as he is thinking of moving to Ireland. Irish Citizenship can be obtained in a number of different ways. All persons born in Ireland before 1/1/2005 are automatically Irish Citizens. If they are born in Ireland after that date they have to show that their parents are Irish Citizens of if their parents are not Irish Citizens that their parents have a genuine connection with Ireland and have been resident legally in Ireland 3 out of the previous 4 years. If a person has a British parent or a parent who is entitled to live in Northern Ireland or the Irish State without restriction on their residency they can also become Irish Citizens. A child born in Ireland to a parent who has been granted refugee status is also automatically entitled to Irish citizenship. If a person born anywhere has Irish Citizen parents as in Eoin’s case he is an Irish Citizen and can apply for an Irish Passport. In certain categories as follows the person can apply to go on the foreign births register and through this process apply for Irish Citizenship If you were born outside Ireland to an Irish citizen who was born outside Ireland, then you are entitled to become an Irish citizen. If your parent derived Irish citizenship in another manner, for example, through marriage, adoption or naturalisation, and was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, you can become an Irish citizen. It is possible to become an Irish Citizen also through an Irish Grandparent Another common route to citizenship is through marriage/civil partnership to an Irish Citizen and certain conditions need to be complied with for this including • You must be validly married to or in a recognised civil partnership and living together with the Irish citizen for at least 3 years • You must have had a period of 3 years reckonable residence out of the last 5 years. • You must be over 18 years, of good character and intend to continue to live on the island of Ireland • You must have made a declaration of fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the State. Lawquip: I am Irish not because I was born in Ireland but because Ireland was born in me.

Medical Matters SKIN CANCER Dr David Buckley Most people love a sunny day. It can improve our mood and helps with vitamin D production. However, with all the sunshine we have been having recently, it should make us more aware of the dangers of the sun. While sunburn may be painful, it can also put us at risk of skin cancer later in life. More prolonged but less intense ultraviolet light (UVL) exposure from the sun or sunbeds on the skin may lead to a tan. However, if the skin is constantly being exposed to the sun or UVL it can lead to premature aging of the skin (causing wrinkles) and to skin cancer. Skin cancer is becoming more common every year as a result of many factors including: • People living longer • People spending more time outdoors with sports or hobbies • Sunbathing • More foreign travel to hot countries • Sun beds • More people with depressed immune systems as a result of chemotherapy or anti-rejection drugs in those who have had an organ transplant • Depletion of the ozone layer in the atmosphere
Like most cancers, early detection of skin cancer can save lives. These are the warning signs that a lesion (a growth, a sore, a freckle or a mole) may be turning cancerous in adults. They are more obvious in the summer because our skin is more visible as we are less covered up in the summer: • New - A new growth, sore, freckle or mole in the last 12 months. • Changing - A growth, sore, freckle or mole that is changing in size, shape or colour over the past 12 months. • Different - A growth, sore, freckle or mole that looks, feels or behaves differently from any other growth, sore, freckle or mole on the body (the ‘’ugly duckling’’ sign). • Sore - A growth, sore, freckle or mole that is sore, tender to touch, bleeding or itchy and will not heal after 6-12 weeks. An easy way to remember these warning signs is by using the mnemonic; ‘’New Cancers Do Show’’. If a growth, sore, freckle or mole shows one or more of these four warning signs it should be checked by your general practitioner. The more warning signs, the greater the risk of skin cancer. Next week we will discuss how to prevent skin cancer and wrinkles.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Chamber announces Dick Spring as Business Development Ambassador for Trale DICK Spring has encouraged the people and business community of Tralee to buy in to Tralee Chamber Alliance’s plans for the future of the town, at the launch of the new Tralee brand at Siamsa Tire this afternoon. The former Tánaiste was announced as the Business Development Ambassador for Kerry’s capital town at the event. Created by the business community of Tralee for everyone in Tralee, the Brand will showcase the town with a vibrant image and strengthen its case when attracting investment, promoting tourism and help position Tralee as the integral business, technology and retail hub of Kerry. .Tralee Chamber Alliance has led the initiative to develop a new brand for Tralee and in doing so it reached out to Dick Spring, one of Ireland’s most influential individuals, to act as a Business Development Ambassador for the town. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Aidan Kelly, said: “It is the goal of Tralee Chamber Alliance to create jobs and we believe that as Business Development Ambassador, Dick Spring will play a key role in helping us to achieve this goal. Dick’s experience and enthusiasm
for Tralee will help open doors for Tralee Chamber Alliance to gain valuable connections both nationally and internationally. I am confident that as Business Development Ambassador, Dick Spring, working closely with Tralee Chamber Alliance’s Managing Consultant, Ken Tobin, will greatly enhance efforts to strengthen business and economic growth for Tralee.” Dick Spring, who will collaborate with Tralee Chamber Alliance on a number of projects, said: “I welcome and applaud the initiative of the Tralee Chamber Alliance, which is of importance in the effort to maintain and promote Tralee as the vibrant commercial centre in the South West. I am confident that Tralee will continue to be an attractive location both for our own community and visitor, and will be seen as a place that offers an excellent quality of life to those who live and work here. I am looking forward to collaborating with Tralee Chamber Alliance in attracting Foreign Direct Investment to our town, especially in the areas of financial services and technology.” Throughout April, over 1000 people who live and work in Tralee were asked to participate in a survey to help develop a strong brand for the
town. From their feedback, Paul Ruane of Midpoint Creative on behalf of the Tralee Chamber Alliance Marketing Team, designed the new brand which was unveiled by Dick Spring at a special event in Siamsa Tíre Theatre, Tralee. Paul Ruane at the launch. Photo by Dermot Crean Paul Ruane said: “Tralee’s new Brand has been created by the business community of Tralee for the businesses and people of Tralee, to show Tralee in a positive way and help change some perceptions for the better. The new Brand Logo is a capital ‘T’ reflective of the flow of a river derived from the meaning
of ‘Trá Lí’. It symbolises the work life balance in Tralee being close to mountains and beaches. The different colours represent the various sectors, cultures and lifestyle the town offers. The overall Brand Identity is vibrant, colourful and welcoming and will be used throughout all future promotional media.” Over the past three months, since Tralee Chamber Alliance underwent a restructuring process, a number of positive initiatives have been introduced with the aim of attracting more members and fostering pride in Kerry’s Capital Town among the people who live and work in Tralee.

Latest update on former Dennys site
TECHNOLOGY CORNER with Billy O Meara (HRI Services)
Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Is buying a cheap charger for my mobile phone ok or should I buy a recommended one from the manufacturer?
The most common chargers used today are for the iPhone or an Android Phone and in my opinion it very important you purchase a recommended one .Otherwise you could be shorten the life of your battery or even damage your mobile phone. There are four stages occur when you charge your phone: Stage 1: As you connect your phone, the battery’s voltage quickly increases. Stage 2: The voltage peaks and current from the charger begins to decrease. Stage 3: The battery is fully charged and the charger cuts the current off from the mobile phone completely. Stage 4: Standby mode, where only a top-up charge is supplied when the battery drops below a specified voltage. We have all heard the horror stories of chargers going on fire so make sure that they have the CE mark. Devices that carry such approval usually mean that the products have clever circuitry that allows the devices to work well.
Kerry County councils draft plan for the old Dennys site (Island of Geese) indicates that while it might be sometime before the site is fully developed in its entirety , the ‘Community enjoyment “element of the project could be ready for development by next year . Speaking on Radio Kerry this week , a council spokesman said that this draft masterplan which has been drawn up by Reddy Architecture + Urbanism, isnt over specific as to the type of projects to enter the site but the long-term aim is to create a commercial and residential quarter . Substantial funding will be required , most possibly in a Public Private partnership scenario . One of the proposals are for a Spire-like structure on top of the old red-brick chimney, which was a centrepiece of the Denny factory and is of historical and heritage value. The relocation of the Tralee Courts is not favoured by the Council and it hopes to be retained in its current site. People are being asked to make their views known on this draft masterplan; the documents will be on public display throughout the summer.
Are 4k Televisions worth the money ?
So your old TV has given you great service but technology has moved on so time for a new one,!Should I buy a 4K TV or a standard HD set ? Well you may have no choice because from 2017 most manufactures only now make 4K Televisions. Let us look at the benefits of 4k/UHD (Ultra High Definition )over 'normal ' 1080p TV's ....It seems obvious on paper, 4k has four times as many pixels as 1080p, which means it should have a clearer picture, but a UHD TV only improves the picture quality if you are watching 4K content. But with more providers like Netflix and soon Sky now streaming 4K, it will make sense But remember if you are moving form a Full HD television to a 4K you may be disappointed because your picture will only be 4 times the resolution of a standard 1080 HD Television ...Hope that all makes sense

Strawberries...
Strawberry season is upon us. It is the wonderful time of year when the Earth produces the absolute best of this
STRAWBERRY-PECAN QUICK BREAD Serves 8 INGREDIENTS
• • • • • • • • • • •
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 125g butter, at room temperature 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 cup milk 3/4 cup dried strawberries, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped 1 teaspoon cinnamon
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 175c. Spray a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan with vegetable oil. In a medium bowl, whisk the flour with the baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with 1 cup of the sugar until pale and fluffy. Using a handheld mixer at medium speed, beat in the eggs one at a time, beating until fully incorporated between additions. Add the vanilla. At low speed, working in 2 batches, alternately beat in the dry ingredients and the milk. Using a spatula, fold in the dried strawberries and chopped pecans until evenly incorporated. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan. Mix the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar with the cinnamon and sprinkle on top. Bake for about 1 hour and 5 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn it out onto a rack and let cool completely before slicing.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK
I’m wearing makeup a lot less often recently… probably because I’ve been working so much! But I am going to be talking about something I’ve been using a lot recently. I love coconut oil, it has so many uses and benefits.
HAIR MASK: Coconut oil will give your hair a silky texture and lots of shine. I use coconut oil as a hair mask at night
after I’ve washed my hair. Simply heat up about 5 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, so that it’s a warm liquid. Then, apply it to your hair like any other hair mask. Put on a plastic shower cap or wrap an old T-shirt around your head, and leave the oil in while you sleep. The next morning, wash it off in the shower and wow, hello perfect hair! The sun this week will dry out my hair lots so this mask will definitely the a saviour!
EYE MAKEUP REMOVER: I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup. It takes every little bit of eye makeup off and also promotes eyelash growth. Win win situation! BODY MOISTURISER: If you rub a little bit of coconut oil between your hands, you will immediately notice
how incredibly moisturising it feels on your skin. As a body moisturiser, coconut oil is much more hydrating than average store-bought lotions because the oil penetrates deep layers of the skin and actually helps to strengthen underlying tissues. It will also help remove dead skin cells, removing any rough or flaky texture from your skin’s surface and giving you a full body glow. You can use coconut oil as a moisturiser for your entire face, but I like to put it under my eyes and on my lips before bedtime. The best part about this oil is that it will absorb into your skin without feeling oily or greasy. Perfect way to maintain that holiday tan!

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO EVERYONE! Hope you’re having a great week. I myself am not the best morning person, at all. But I’ve been researching the benefits of morning exercise and I must say, it makes me think twice about pressing that snooze button! • When you exercise early in the morning, it “jump starts” your metabolism and keeps it elevated for hours. That means you’re burning more calories all day long just because you exercised in the morning! • Exercising first thing in the morning is the only way to assure something else won’t get in the way of your workout. If you are hit with a really busy day your exercise could be put on the back burner! • Exercising in the morning energizes you for the day, not to mention that gratifying feeling of virtue you have knowing you’ve done something disciplined and good for you. • More than 90% of those who exercise consistently have a morning fitness routine. If you want to exercise on a regular basis, the odds are in your favour if you squeeze your workout into the a.m. • Studies have shown that women and men who wake up early for regular exercise sleep better than those who routinely exercise in the evening. Since exercise stimulates
your body, when you exercise at night, it becomes more difficult to fully relax and drift into peaceful sleep. • By knocking out your exercise first thing, you will approach your food differently throughout the day. You will be proud of yourself for getting up and burning some calories, so why sabotage it with an unhealthy lunch? Instead, you will want to continue your positive choices by eating foods that make you feel fresh and energized.
HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED! Think Positive: I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking! Instead of saying ‘I hope I don’t gain weight’ say ‘I will lose weight’. Positive thoughts can turn into positive things. Make Goals: To help stay on track I find it’s best to make goals, both longterm(monthly) and shortterm(daily/ weekly). If you don’t make goals it is very easy to fall off the wagon!
Visualise: Visualise yourself when you are at your goal weight/ fitness level. Buy a dress the size you strive to be and hang it in your room, print out motivational quotes and images and stick them up! Do whatever works best for you. Reward Yourself: For every goal you reach it’s good to have a corresponding reward. For example, a new pair of shoes, a spa trip, new workout gear, a night out with the girls. Change up your workout: If you stick to the same workout routine everyday you could get bored and your workouts could become less effective. It’s good to change up your workout routine every week or so to keep both your body and mind motivated.

BACK PAIN WHILE DRIVING Being trapped in traffic can be more than a pain in the ass. Back problems are a common side effect of long time on the road. If you drive a fairly long distance regularly (driving for over half an hour) you may have experienced back pain and you wouldn’t be alone. Approximately 30-60% of drivers report back pain that is caused or made worse by driving. It is not uncommon as driving exposes the body to many different forces including:
acceleration, deceleration and most notably vibration. Driving also involves the use of your feet to control the pedals which means that they are not used to help us stabalise and support the lower body as they normally would when sitting. A combination of these factors as-well as poor design of some vehicles seats can cause back problems for some people. Top tips: 1. Know your limit by testing
how long you can drive before your pain begins. Knowing how long will allow you to take regular breaks before the pain begins 2. Take regular breaks to move around and do some stretches – also stretch before you begin a journey or anytime it is possible and safe to do so during and after your journey 3. Being comfortably seated is very important when driving – ensure your seat is adjusted so it is comfortable for you and if your vehicle does not have a lumbar support use a lumbar support cushion to support your back Try to maintain a good driving posture, this is easier to do if you take regular breaks. If it is possible on long journeys try to share the driving with another person. Being a passenger will allow you to move around more and alleviate the strain on your spine. Take care when getting
in and out of the vehicle, do not twist your back but, rather rotate your whole body and take care when loading and unloading items from your vehicle. Carry smaller loads closer to your body and remember to bend your knees when lifting. Exercise, as it helps keep your back strong, healthy and decreases the risks of developing back pain in the first place. “It really pays to get to know your car and learn how to adjust your car seat – that way you can avoid long-term muscle, joint and spinal injuries”

...Teacher says, “Who said ‘Four Score and Seven Years Ago’?” Johnny raises his hand first but teacher calls on Susie instead, “Abraham Lincoln!” “That’s right Susie, you can go home. Who said, ‘I Have a Dream’?” Again, Johnny raises his hand first but the teacher allows Mary to answer first, “Martin Luther King!” “That’s right Mary, you can go home early.” The teacher asks another question, “Who said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you’?” Before Johnny even has a chance to raise his hand, Nancy says, “John F. Kennedy”.” “That’s right Nancy, you may also leave.” The teacher said. When the teacher turns her back Johnny says in frustration, “I wish these dumb Broads would keep their goddamn mouths shut!” The teacher hears this and turns around. She is livid: “NOW WHO SAID THAT?” Johnny: “Harvey Weinstein. See ya tomorrow!”

bike!” The guard takes the bags and rips them apart, he empties them out and finds nothing in them but sand. He detains Juan overnight and has the sand analyzed, only to discover that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags. The guard releases Juan, puts the sand into new bags, hefts them onto the man’s shoulders, and lets him cross the border. The next day, the same thing happens. The guard asks, “What have you got?” “Sand,” says Juan. The guard does his thorough examination and discovers that the bags contain nothing but sand. He gives the sand back to Juan, and Juan crosses the border on his bicycle. This sequence of events is repeated every day for a year. Finally, Juan doesn’t show up one day and the guard meets him in a Cantina in Mexico. “Hey, Buddy,” says the guard, “I know you are smuggling something. It’s driving me crazy. It’s all I think about… I can’t sleep. Just between you and me, what are you smuggling?” Juan sips his beer and says, “Bicycles.”

TORQUING CARS! VOLKSWAGEN MAKES CARLA WENTZEL BOSS OF IRISH ARM
Volkswagen Group Ireland has appointed South African Carla Wentzel as the new group managing director for its Irish operation. Wentzel, currently general manager of the VW brand in South Africa, will be in charge of all VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW Commercials operations in the Republic. It is the largest automotive company here, with a combined share of the new sales market totalling nearly 25 per cent. The South African native has worked for the German car giant for nearly 30 years and been the recipient of an award as most influential woman in business and government in South Africa. She holds a master’s degree in commerce from the University of Cape Town. Wentzel will take over from Tom Fleming, who has led Volkswagen Group Ireland as interim managing director since December 2017 and will now return to his previous role of group human resources director. Prior to Fleming, the position was held by Lars Himmer, who is now head of Volkswagen passenger cars in Russia.
HEALTHY START TO 182 CARS ON IRISH ROADS
It would appear that 182-reg car buying has got off to a good start, with registrations so far this month running at around the same level as last year. Maybe the good weather is putting people in the mood to buy, but more likely it is the sweep of deals on offer in a competitive market. A lot of cars would have been pre-booked, too. One area steaming ahead, predictably, is the volume of second-hand UK imports. They’re already 9pc up on the corresponding period and setting a blistering pace. Car registrations for the year to date are trailing last year’s, but the good start to July seems to suggest there’s reasonable demand out there still. (indo motoring)
WEALTHY MOTORIST SNAPPED UP £226,000 MCLAREN SPORTS CAR - AND TRASHED IT THE NEXT DAY The supercar veered off a road and into a tree near Great Falls, Virginia, on Saturday “Purchased Friday. Totaled Saturday”, the Fairfax County Police tweeted. Petrol heads have taken to social media to lament the destruction of such a rare sports car. “Sad to see such a beautiful car destroyed by irresponsible owner”, one wrote “Poor car - if you can’t perform - don’t get a performance car”, another added. While another quipped: “Looks to me like they can probably buff that out”.
MOTOR TAX BANDS LIKELY TO CHANGE FOR WLTP RULES
It now looks very likely the Government will widen the current motor tax bands by between 10 and 20 per cent to account for higher emissions under the new fuel economy tests. WLTP, or the World harmonised Light vehicle Test Procedure, is the new official fuel and emissions test, replacing the old - and thoroughly disgraced - New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test. Currently, car makers are scrambling to get their cars re-tested under the new legislation, which says that from September 1st, all cars must display their new Co2 emissions and fuel economy data. They won’t be taxed on the WLTP figures, though, at least not yet. According to the legislations, 2020 is the proposed final cutoff year when all EU countries must change their tax systems to use WLTP data, and that presents a major worry for car makers and consumers alike. Why? Because the WLTP test is tougher, more stringent, than the old NEDC one and that means more realistic official fuel consumption figures (which is, on the whole, good for consumers) but higher CO2 figures too (which means higher tax). Right now, we’re in an interregnum period, where WLTP is not yet in force as the basis for the tax system, but where the old NEDC figures are being recalculated, using the WLTP data, so official recorded emissions for most models are set to rise in the coming months. For many, it will be a rise of only one or two per cent so the effect will be negligible. For others, the rise in CO2 will be more profound, and potentially more damaging in a business sense. Hard to administer One motor industry insider, an expert in the WLTP system who asked us not to use their name, commented : “The idea is that you have an individual Co2 and MPG figure for each individual car, which is great from a consumer information point of view, and something that I think all of us stand behind as being a good idea. What makes it very hard is our tax structure. Frankly, it’s very hard to administer.” Whatever the Government decides to do with the motor tax bands, and whatever final date is set for the implementation of full WLTP figures, this is going to be a very messy period for car buyers. A move that was supposed to bring about greater transparency and honesty in the motor trade, when it comes to fuel economy figures, is now looking like being the most confusing piece of vehicular legislation, ever.

The biggest one is that for the first time ever a collapse in Croke Park in what would have been an All Ireland final does not mean that Kerry’s season is over. With the All Ireland Round Robin qualifiers or whatever its officially called – and I do think we should stop calling it the Super 8’s after all 4 game last weekend – Kerry have two more chances. The other positive was the performance of David Clifford who was excellent and took his goal will all the skills he learned on the Schoolboys soccer fields! The question was raised again as to whether David and Sean O’Shea should have been left play with the u20’s as well and we will come back to that later. Beyond that there was very little that anyone involved with or supporting Kerry could take out of the game. It was hard to watch with Kerry never getting going and Galway dictating the flow of the game. As Eamonn Fitzmaurice his side were a yard off the pace and lost almost all the individual battles. Looking at some of the stats, provided by Sure Stats, and Kerry only had 46% possession, only one 17 of their 26 kick outs, and converted 9 from 22 scoring chances from play. Galway did not do much better as they took 10 from 23! Kerry had 11wides with Galway putting 12 wide. One side where Kerry certainly caused themselves problems was that they conceded 11 frees in the opposition half and of course had Killian Young sent off for a striking action. A lot of the other stats were close but certainly there was a difference in performance between the two side with Galway being the hungrier. There has been lots written about Kerry coming in cold and this was certainly the case as they did not have a competitive game. The Kerry County Board now need to do the right thing for the players of the future and call for the ending of the Munster championship. This along with Leinster and Connacht are well past their sell-by date with only Ulster being competitive. The other theory is that Kerry got
34
TRALEE ADVERTISER
their training programme wrong in that they focused on Monaghan next week as they presumed they would get over Galway. Maybe not by much but certainly it has been said that they were 100% confident they would win. One aspect that baffles a lot better readers of the game than me, and one that Colm Cooper mentioned on the Sunday Game, is that Kerry don’t seem to know what style they want to play. They use a sweeper but then move him out of there. I know they are working with a number of different coaches and maybe the team is in more of a transition than people think. But in modern day elite sport there is very little time for transition if the performance isn’t there. For example Kilkenny are in transition this summer and are out of the All Ireland championship by mid-July. But they won the League and put up a great performance against Limerick so can hold their heads high. But the other thing about sport is that there is always the next game and that is the message that the management team will be telling the players this week. If Kerry can beat Monaghan it sets up what then becomes a traditional quarter final against Kildare as a win would see us into an All -Ireland semifinal. This would most lightly be against Dublin and after two poor showings in Croke Park what better motivation is there to make the third appearance a huge one. If Kerry put up a big showing against Dublin and even if they go down will that be enough to save the current management set-up. Time will tell. Bookies not often wrong: And for all the Kerry fans who might be feeling down after last Sunday Kerry are still second favourites to win the All-Ireland alongside Galway. Dublin are raging hot favourites at 4/9. After the top three it is Tyrone and 10/1, Donegal at 16’s and Monaghan at 20/1. Kildare are 40/1 and Roscommon 100/1 so despite what everyone hopes is a one –off blip Kerry according to the bookies are still right in there with a great chance of at least getting to the decider. Venues: GAA authorities will certainly have to look at fixing the games for Croke Park as the crowds didn’t warrant the opening and the atmosphere was certainly morgue Friday 20th July 2018
like. The other things is that is the provincial championships remain then there must be something for the winners. So the four provincial winners should have their first game at home. The second game should be either at home again for the provincial winners or if that would give them too much of an advantage then this game away to the closet team to them in the group. The third game would be between the two provincial champions at a neutral venue to them. So it would be Kerry at home to Monaghan, Kerry away to Kildare and Kerry and Galway at the Gaelic Grounds. Galway would have been at home to Kildare and away to Monaghan. By using this format it would also get over the Dubs playing two games in Croke Park as their game against Donegal would be at a neutral venue – possible Clones. 20’s go out: For the second year in a row there was disappointment for this age group and their management under Jack O’Connor. Last year is was Galway in the u21’s and this year it was Kildare in the inaugural u20’s All-Ireland semi-final. It was never going to easy against Kildare who were coming off a huge win over Dublin. And to their credit they carried that momentum into the game and were the better side for most of the game. What will be frustrating for Kerry is that they hit late scores including a goal to close to within a point and if they took it to extra time they were in the ascendency. But it wasn’t to be. The one worrying thing from a Kerry point of view is that from the 5 minor All Ireland wins the majority of these players have still not experienced an All-Ireland at the next level. Better news for the hurlers and the Ladies: Well done to the Kerry hurlers who have qualified for the semi-final of the All-Ireland u21B Championship (the Ritchie McElligott Cup) with a comfortable 12 point win – 2-22 to 2-10 win over Kildare. They will face either Donegal or Sligo who were due to meet in mid-week in Ballinsloe this Sunday with a 2pm throw-in. The Kerry Ladies got their TG4 Ladies All Ireland Group 1 campaign off to a winning start when the saw off Tipperary 3-13 to 2-10. Next up is a trip to Donegal in Dr Hyde Park
DRAW FOR THE U21 CHAMPIONSHIPS MADE: The draw for the Acorn Life County u21 Football Championship was made live on Radio Kerry Sport during the week. There are 14 teams so it’s a straight knock-out with 6 games and two byes – Kenmare and Mid-Kerry. Games are set to take place on Tuesday night July 24th. From a Tralee point of view St Brendan’s are at home to Dr Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys welcome West Kerry while Austin Stacks go to Dingle. The winners and the two byes will go into the quarter final on August 2nd. TRALEE RE-BRANDING BUT DON’T FORGET SPORTS TOURISM: There was a big day in Tralee with the re-branding and the appointment of Dick Spring to an ambassadorial role to look to bring investment into the town. Organisations like the Tralee Chamber can take great credit for how the town has progressed and its Tidy Towns committee certainly have the place looking very well. Yes there are still issues and like every town the more jobs that can come to the town the better so all this new branding and initiatives will only help the town. But while the focus of the launch during the week was not primarily about tourism I am hoping that at some stage the Chamber will look at Sports Tourism. Aside from the GAA National League games there are the possibilities from soccer’s League of Ireland u15 and u17 teams, with the addition of u13’s and u19’s, the Tralee marathon and triathlon, the Circuit of Kerry and Munster rallies etc. As I have suggested in the past a dedicated person in the Chamber should be tasked to focus on this especially for the shoulder periods of the year. A prime example of what Tralee could attract is the Century Shield that John Regan and the KDL have secured for the town in November. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland u15’s as hosts will play the tournament in the town with the Rose Hotel the accommodation in a time that would normally be quite. PARNELLS NEWS: Hugely Successful Parnells Summer Camp: The club’s 4 day summer camp finished up Thursday and it was a massive success. They had their highest numbers of kids attending a camp and for the first time the Under 16 and minor boys and girls were the lead coaches. The committee thanks all those that were involved in making the camp

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER such a success. In Round 3 of the 1B Minor County League the Parnells minors faced Ballyduff this week and then have one group game left against St Brendan’s Ardfert. The u8’s camogie players enjoyed their trip to Kilmoyley and thank all those from Cillard from their hospitality. The u10’s girls put in a cracking performance in Kilmoyley and have really improved this week. They also want to thank all the parents who travelled and of course their hosts Cillard. AUSTIN STACKS JUNIOR NEWS: The club hosts its summer camp in Connolly Park from August 7th to 11th from 9.30am to 1pm costing e40 and registrations will be done on the first morning. The football sessions at the Seanchill Community Centre continues on Tuesday evenings from 6pm. The underage teams are training on Sunday mornings and the mid-week sessions are also back after a short summer break with the Bracker Regan League taking place on Thursday afternoons from 5.45pm. The u8’s enjoyed their trip to John Mitchels. The u10’s will began their John Galvin Trophy competition this Thursday. They also had a very enjoyable Go Games session in John Mitchels. The u12’s took on Castlegregory in Connolly Park and were very unlucky to go down by 1 point. Well done to the u13’s who are the Town League Champions while the u14’s are in Kelliher’s Toyota Central League Division 2 action. The 16’s continue in the Lee Strand County League. KERRY COMMENCES ALLIRELAND CAMPAIGN WITH A HOME WIN: Kerry welcomed Clare to Abbeydorney in the first round of the the Liberty Ireland All-Ireland Premier Camogie Championship. Kerry had beaten the Banner girls twice already this season but the All-Ireland series comes with its own pressures and they were not taking anything for granted. In a close first half Kerry led at the break by 6 points to 4 so it was all to play for. But the home side took over in the second half and with goals from captain Jackie Horgan and sub Megan Weir Kerry ran out easy winner 2-11 to 0-06. They will take on Limerick this Saturday in their next round. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,10,12 and 23 with the next jackpot being e8,400 and the draw in Skelper’s Keane on Sunday night. Members who have yearly Lotto tickets are asked to renew them as soon as possible. Juveniles: The u10’s took part in a very enjoyable Blitz hosted by Ballyheigue with Ardfert and Churchill also taking part. The u14’s were unlucky to go down to Milltown-Castlemaine B 1-12 to 2-06 in the Central League. They faced Austin Stacks B at home in
mid-week. The U16 boys got their season off to a start with their first game at home to Stacks B last Wednesday in the County League. Playing in sunny Blennerville, this was a game that the controlled throughout the duration of the match and ran out winners on a score line of St Pats 3-4 to Stacks B 2-2. They faced Beale in mid-week. The Seniors travelled to Mountcoal to take on St Senans in Round 9 of the Division 3 County League but it was the home side that took the win. They were ahead 0-08 to 0-03 at the break and took the win on a 1-12 to 0-11 points score line. The B’s are hoping to qualify for the semi-finals of the League which is set for Friday 20th of July. Cul Camp 2018: The St Pats Cul Camp will take place between the 6th and 10th of August from 10am to 2.30pm every day. The Camp provides boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 13 with action packed and fun-filled week of activities during the summer holidays. Cost is €60 per child with reductions (€50 for second child and €40 for third and fourth child) for additional members and bookings are now open. BALLYMAC NOTES: Ballymac took on Ardfert in Division 2 of the Senior County League and it was the home side that started much the brighter with a Luke Sweeney goal giving them a 1-06 to 0-01 lead. It got even better before the break with another Ballymac goal from Josh O’Keeffe to see them lead 2-09 to 0-02 points. Ballymac continued to be the better team in the second half and added another goal from to take the win 3-14 to 0-08. Lotto Results: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8, 17,21 and 28 and the next jackpot will be e5,600. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: A great start by the Tralee side saw them hit 1-03 with reply by Glenbeigh inside the first 10 minutes. Gearoid Savage got the goal after being set-up by Ryan Carroll. They led by four points at the break 1-07 to 0-6. They outscored the opposition by nine points to three in the second half to win 1-16 to 0-09. In Division 1 the win over Glenbeigh/Glencar saw them move into second spot after An Gaeltacht lost to Dr Crokes. Their next game is away to Beaufort and the West Kerry side taking on Templenoe on July 27th with a League final at stake. In the Lee Strand Town League Senior Championship Rahillys will play John Mitchels on August 3rd with the u21’s and the Minors also in action next week. There was another busy week for the Academy with Aoife Hobbert, Johnathan Foley, Cian Fitzgerald, Tadgh Lawlor, Luca Fusco, Lexi Keane and Aoibhinn McCarthy being named the Players of the Week. The u12’s had a Blitz in the Stadium this week while the u13’s went down to Austin Stacks with

Churchill up next. The u14 A and B’s had games this week and we will have the results next week. The u16’s enjoyed their first County League win when the defeated Kilgarvan / Tousist. In the Girls the teams are training as normal this week. The club thanks everyone who helped out with the bag packing in the Horan Centre. The club’s Summer Camp takes place from Monday 30th to August 3rd from 10.30am to 2pm. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 7,9,11 and 25th and the next jackpot will be e4,900. TRALEE DYNAMOS COACHES MEETING: Tralee Dynamos are already planning for next season and are holding a Coaches Meeting this Monday night, July 23rd, at their clubhouse from 7.30pm. New coaches are also welcome on the night as the numbers playing with the club, especially at the underage levels, continue to grow. PARK WIN LAST DERBY OF THE SEASON: The final game of the season took place in the KDL on Tuesday night and it was the Park that were crowned the Dominos Pizza u17 Cup champions. They saw off their neighbours Tralee Dynamos 3-1 with Padraig McCannon hitting a cracking hat trick for the winners and Tony Duggan pulling one back late on from an excellent free kick. WEEKEND RACING: There are three meetings at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this weekend with both Friday and Saturday night’s races starting at 7.42 and the SIS meeting on Saturday afternoon at 2.12. The track is taking entries for the Speedrite Rose of Tralee for confined A4 525 yards starting on July 27th and the Boylesports Derby Trial stake AAO 550 yards that will be run on August 3rd. TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB: The organisers of the Tralee Bay swimming club World Series are getting their calendar back on track with two swims. They had one last night – Thursday night and one on next week on Wednesday or Thursday and we will have all the news from the first swim next week. KILLARNEY’S KISSANE TAKE CYCLING LEAGUE HONOURS: The final round of the Road Race League, hosted by Killorglin was won by Cian Smailes with Sean Riordan in second and Conor Kissane 3rd. This gave Kissane the League title from Denis Lynch who was 4th on the night with David Fitzgerald, Tralee Manor West, in third. On the night in Killorglin Killarney CC dominated the underage races with Cathal Larkin, Adam Lenihan and Tadgh O’Shea winning the U12, u14 and u16 races. The u16’s went to Patrick Galvin also of Killarney CC with Tralee MW’s Eoin Moloney in second followed by Lorcan Daly. Friday 20th July 2018
The Road Race County Championships are set to take place on Thursday July 26th hosted by Tralee BC. TRALEE ATHLETES TO THE FORE: Tralee Harriers are one of the strongest clubs in the country and their athletes were on a large number of podiums at the Irish Life Health Juvenile Championships. The final day of the meet takes place this Sunday for high jumpers and middle distance athletes. Best of luck to Cillian Griffin, Luke O’Carroll and Mervyn Shalemba from Mercy Mounthawk who are heading to the SIAB Schools Track and Field Championships in Scotland. FROM THE OVAL: The Kerry Junior Cricket side are into the Munster final after they saw off Midleton in the semi-finals. Sadly the Kerry 1st went out of the Clear Currency Irish National Cup at the quarter final stages going down to Galway. This Sunday the Kerry 2nds are away to Midelton in Division 1 while in the Premier Division County Kerry 1st takes on Cork County at the Oyster Oval. ON THE PITCH AND PUTT GREENS: The big winners in this week’s Pitch and Putt competitions were Deerpark’s Damien Fleming who was crowned the National Senior Gents Strokeplay champion – after finishing third for the last two years. He is the second Kerry player to lift the ultimate title following on from Tralee’s Jonathon Goodall in 2012. I have to give a mention to the other big winner as Robbie Harnett (my nephew!!) won the u16’s County Strokeplay title with a 9 under par score – not bad for a 13 year old! This Sunday the action is in Castleisland with the Scratch Cup and cards are available from 8.30am to 2.30pm costing e10 per player with play-off if needed from 5pm. TRALEE GC: In the MC 11 Sponsored by Acorn Life/Eddie Enright/Alan Kelly the winner was Mark Sheehy from James O’Halloran and David Hennebery. The 18+ went to John Moran Snr with Graham Spring taking the Best Gross. In the Ladies Results Captain Kevin’s prize was won by Barbara Reen from Ber Collins with Catherine McCarthy taking the Best Gross. The front 9 went to Monica O’Neill and the Back 9 to Liz Grey. In the Scramble the winners were Breda Walshe, Nora Lehane, Paudie Nolan and Sandra O’Sullivan. The Terry’s Butchers competition went to Karen Gearon while the Senior Ladies competition was won by Gloria Walsh from Mary Barrett and Bernie Rohan.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: TELEPHONE SUPPORT ALLOWANCE Question I am a pensioner living alone. I used to get an allowance towards my telephone bill, but it stopped a few years ago. I heard it might be coming back – is this true? Answer The allowance you used to get was the Telephone Allowance, which was a monthly payment towards your mobile phone or landline and was part of the Household Benefits Package. This payment was discontinued in January 2014. What you may have heard about is the new Telephone Support Allowance (TSA). The TSA is a weekly payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) which aims to help with the cost of communications and/or home alert systems for people who live alone and have limited means. To qualify for the TSA, you must be getting both the Living Alone Increase and the Fuel Allowance along with another social welfare payment such as the State Pension. Since the week of 4 June 2018, the TSA has been paid automatically to people who qualify. There is no application form and you do not need to contact the DEASP to apply. The TSA is a payment of €2.50 a week. It is paid in addition to your weekly social welfare payment. If you believe you should qualify for the TSA but have not been getting it since 4 June, contact the DEASP section that pays your main pension or benefit. You can find these contact details on welfare.ie.
