LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Will I, won’t I….. Making a Will is something that comes across everybody’s thought process from time to time. It may seem gloomy but it can be such a weight of one’s shoulders and a comfort to know that one’s family, home, land or businesses are looked after when you are gone. Let’s take a look at the benefits of making a Will and what to do to make it a positive experience and the best way to go about knowing that your wishes will be implemented after you’ve passed. Making a Will is the best way to make your wishes known. In fact without a valid Will, the distribution of your assets will be according to the rules of intestacy ( that is a no will situation). In this case only married or civil partners and some other close relatives can inherit under the rules of intestacy and not necessarily according to your wishes. If you are in a loving relationship and are not married or civil partners, you cannot inherit your spouse’s or partner’s estate unless he or she had a valid Will in place. Under the Cohabitants legislation a qualified cohabitee ( lived together 2 years with children and five years without children) can apply for a share of the estate. But who wants to put loved ones through that when they are grieving. It is also the best way to reduce inheritance tax, by obtaining professional drafting of your Will by your Solicitor, this may reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable by your loved ones after your death. A Will is vitally important if one has children under the age of 18, it’s not something that new families think of, but it makes perfect sense to know that your children’s inheritance is looked after securely and that the proper Guardians of your wishes are appointed. Executors are the people you appoint in a will to make sure your wishes are carrried into effect. Trustees are people you appoint to look after assets for the benefit of children until they are 18 or older or a child with an intellectual disability. It is important also to appoint testamentary Guardians who will look after infant children if something happens a single or married parent. Which brings us to the point of having your estate protected and secure from being contested, The Succession Act 1965 allows certain individuals to make a claim for a part of a person’s estate, money, property, businesses etc., even if that person never intended to leave that individual anything. Chatting with your Solicitor and making a Will and the risk of this can be significantly reduced. We Solicitors aim to make doing your Will a hassle free experience for all involved and the peace of mind it gives is priceless knowing that your wishes will be adhered to and knowing that your loved ones will be taken care of. TRALEE CHAMBER ALLIANCE CEO TO RETURN TO AQUA DOME. The Directors of Tralee Waterworld PLC announced this week that it’s Chief Executive, Kieran Rutledge, is reverting to his former position as full time CEO of the Aquadome. This was announced last Monday by the Chairman of the Aquadome, Denis Reen. “Originally seconded to the Chamber Alliance for a period of two years in order to get the new organisation up and running, he has now served almost six years. His focus is now needed back at the Aquadome in order to plan its future.” says Denis The timing of the move is seen as opportune as the Chamber is planning a restructuring with the injection of new blood. Tralee has been well served down through the years by the various generations that gave us the world famous Rose of Tralee festival, the internationally renowned Barrow golf club, which makes 2

us a world famous golfing destination and the attractions that have established Tralee as a family holiday destination. We are confident that the present generation will not be found wanting and will deliver as the previous generations have done. We wish the Chamber well with its restructuring and assure them of our full support into the future. Tralee needs a strong and vibrant Chamber and now is the time for the next generation to step forward and lead us forward.” Aidan Kelly, President of Tralee Chamber Alliance said On behalf of the Board, members and staff of Tralee Chamber Alliance, I wish to thank Kieran Ruttledge for his dedication and commitment to the town of Tralee during his time as CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to the board of Aqua Friday 19th January 2018

Dome Tralee for seconding Kieran to the role of Tralee Chamber Alliance CEO for the past six years – four more than had been originally been intended. There have been many high points during Kieran’s tenure as CEO including the recent successes in winning the Most Enterprising Town Awards, securing Purple Flag Status

for Tralee, winning the title of Ireland’s Best Large Tourism Town in 2015 and being a finalist in that competition in 2013. He has worked tirelessly to deliver on the mission of Tralee Chamber Alliance to make Tralee Ireland’s premier town in which to live, work and to visit.

We need an extra room in our house as my husband works from home quite a lot, however with young kids, our house is quite noisy? Deirdre, Ballymacelligott A garden room might be ideal for your requirements. It is a space that can be used all year round and can be constructed without any major disruption to your life. In addition to a home office, these spaces are quite useful as play dens for older children, (especially if they play the drums), hobby rooms, gym etc. as they are separated from the house, providing the occupants with a quite space. As you are intending to use the space for one of the options above, then planning permission will be required. Depending on the garden space and layout, you could choose to place your garden room close to the house or remotely down the garden. Don’t forget that utilities will need to be connected, such as electricity, heating, maybe water and sewers. If you want a more eco-friendly option, off-grid methods could be considered. Modern garden rooms can to be a more contemporary piece of architecture and could be clad in timber or metal with flat roofs and have a wall of glass. A detached garden room is the perfect opportunity to utilise off-site construction. This will allow for a fast-track building method in a factory environment, meaning a higher quality finish. These methods are common practice on the continent and in America. Access for delivery of the off-site kit should to be considered. Give windows and doors careful consideration in terms of being overlooked or overlooking your neighbours. Think about access to the building and how the paths will interact with the garden space and any planting. Don’t forget windows, to overlook your garden and bring in lots of light. As the space is a home office, seek glare free spots for your computer.

STRICTLY COME DANCING AT UHK (KERRY GENERAL) The sports and social club of UHK are hosting a strictly come dancing event in Ballygarry House Hotel Tralee on February 23rd 2018 in aid of the Chemotherapy day unit in UHK. There are 24 hospital staff members from all different disciplines within the hospital who have volunteered to dance as well as a supporting committee. The chemotherapy day unit is where chemotherapy is administered to oncology patients. Due to increasing demand for oncology services in Kerry, we have outgrown the current units facilities and are in the process of looking

to extend the unit in order to provide a purpose built facility where patients can be treated with compassion, respect and dignity at all stages of the treatment process. The expansion of the current chemotherapy day unit is essential in order to address the growing demand for the service.

There is a gofundme page and the link is: gofundme.com/ Sports and social club UHK Any members of the public who would like to donate can follow the above gofundme link. Every donation goes directly to the chemotherapy day unit fund.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CORINNE KERRYS FIRST REPRESENTATIVE TO ISCP BOARD Tralee Advertiser recently caught up with Physiotherapist Corinne Evens and she told us of her good news “I have been a full practising member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists since 1995 but, I am thrilled to have been chosen for the executive board to be the first Kerry representative at board level to this professional body. The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) is responsible with the approval of the Minister for Health, for accrediting entry to the practice Physiotherapy programmes in Irish Universities. The society is also the designated authority for the review and validation of qualifications obtained outside Ireland. ISCP is the national professional body representing over 3,400 Chartered Physiotherapists in Ireland. The Society is respected and recognised

both within and outside the profession as the voice of physiotherapy in Ireland. The society is the sole Irish member organisation of the international physiotherapy professional organisation World Confederation for Physical Therapy and contributes to the development of the profession both nationally and internationally. In Ireland the title Chartered Physiotherapist can only be used by current members of the society. The initials MISCP indicate that a physiotherapist is a member of the society. Chartered Physiotherapists represent the highest standard of practice and service and set the bench mark for professional practice in Ireland. They are bound by a code of ethics and fully committed to upholding the highest medical and ethical standards and continuing professional development. Choosing a

Chartered Physiotherapist is your guarantee that they have been trained to the highest academic and professional standards and also, that they continue to keep abreast of emerging trends and developments through a programme of continuous

professional development. It is a great honour to have been chosen for this position and I look forward to flying the flag for Kerry at my first board meeting in the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin on the 17th of January. “

How are the New Year’s Resolutions going? Many people talk about what they want and never take the steps to get there. Changes cannot unfortunately be made just because it is a New Year! There are many different reasons for not making that change last - limiting beliefs, not believing it’s possible, lack of emotional, mental and spiritual skills, not being able to set priorities and manage activities, and procrastination. Heal Your Life ÂŽ Teaching (based on the philosophy of writer Louise Hay) can help you overcome these blocks. Heal Your Life Teachers promote the development of inner skills like meditation, visualization, and affirmations, more than other personal development programs. Join me on a one day or weekend Heal Your Life Workshop if you want to: • learn how to achieve goals faster • learn the mental, emotional, and spiritual life skills for balance and success • learn and use techniques to clear the past and present challenges • learn the value of achieving your full potential • develop a deeper intuitive/spiritual connection Heal Your Life ‘Wellness Weekend’ Workshop in Tralee on 10 & 11 February, 30 June & 1 July, 1 & 2 September 2018 (10-6pm) ‘Managing with Heart and Mind’ (Louise Hay philosophy in work) 1 day Workshop in Tralee on Friday: 4 May, 3 August, 5 October (10-6pm) ... led by Alison Boardman, licensed Heal Your LifeÂŽ Teacher and Coach Contact: alison.boardman01@gmail.com + 353 87 9341613 (what’s app) 16

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. I’ve been loving a good cardio sweat sesh so this week I’m going to talk about the importance of cardio. Now when I say cardio is important I don’t mean jogging excessively on the treadmill for hours, hating every second, punishing yourself for that ‘bad food’ you ate. NO. I’m talking about doing different exercises that make you feel good and improve your cardiovascular health while doing so. It might be swimming, boxing, a gym class, walking the dog, cycling anything that gets you up and moving and feeling good! I used to hate ‘cardio’ because what cardio meant to be was doing the same

exercise EVERY time. Aka jogging for 30 mins. When I started switching up the cardio workouts I was doing, introducing swimming, sprints, interval training, boxing, gym classes etc… I really started enjoying it! I love getting a good sweat on and getting my heart rate up! Doing cardio is important to maintaining a healthy heart. Your heart is the centre of your cardiovascular system, and is vitally responsible for giving your body life! Of course, doing excessive intense cardio is not good either. It will put your body in a catabolic state and burn your hard earned muscle. Then if you lose too much muscle it will slow down your metabolism in turn making it harder to burn fat. So if you think introducing a training regime where all you do is intense cardio sessions 5 times a week with no weight training, you’re not going to benefit! If you think you have fallen into a rut of either extreme(all weight training or all cardio) just try and introduce something new to switch it up a little.

Of course you can do things like HIIT training with some weights and get the best of both worlds. All I’m saying is, cardio is not the devil when done correctly. And it will actually help your performance in the weight room.

Candida... What is it? Candida is a yeast, which occurs naturally in everyone from infancy. It lives in balance in the bowel with other bacteria, known as bowel flora. These flora help with digestion and absorption and also play a vital role in a healthy immune system. Candida becomes a problem if this natural balance is upset, leading to a yeast over growth. This condition is known as candidiasis.

alleviate these symptoms include:

What are the main triggers of candida over-growth? The root cause is usually a weakened immune system, due to poor diet, stress and antibiotics. There are 3 key elements in maintaining correct balance of bowel flora: 1. Diet 2. Maintain a strong immune system 3. Assist the friendly bacteria balance

BIO-KULT CANDEA: Strong probiotic which contains garlic and grapefruit seed extract to kill of the yeast over growth and re-populate the good bacteria (always seek medical advice before taking grapefruit seed extract if you’re on statins)

Some of the common symptoms of candida include: • Skin and nail fungal infections • Feeling tired • Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation or diarrhoea • Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus and brain fog • Skin issues, such as eczema, psoriasis and rashes • Irritability, mood swings and anxiety • Vaginal infections, urinary tract infections and itching • Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings Some of the effective natural remedies you will find in-store, to help to

DIDA: This all in one herbal product is designed to help maintain a healthy candida balance. May also help to ease digestive issues, flatulence and bloating, often caused by candida. Take 3 tablets daily for 30 days.

CAPRYLIC ACID: This is anti-fungal and has been found to effectively help destroy candida When using these or any other supplements (along with the dietary advice) you may experience some discomfort – keep going.... this is a result of the Candida dying off and sometimes the body cannot eliminate the waste products fast enough so it is vital to drink plenty of water to help the process along. If you think you may have candida, call into any of our health stores, where we will be able to advise which product would suit your specific requirements. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

Winter warmers...... Old Fashioned Comfort Food!

Look at the weather we have been having so far in January ! In weather like this nothing beats comfort food! It warms the heart and feeds the soul, big hearty bowls of heaven So here is a delicious dish to do exactly that!

CHICKEN AND WILD RICE CASSEROLE Rice • • • • • • •

1/2 pound wild rice 1 medium carrot, finely chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 celery rib, finely chopped 1 bay leaf 1 thyme sprig Sea salt & Pepper

SWISS CHARD • • • •

3 tablespoons grapeseed or canola oil 1 large shallot, minced 2 large garlic cloves, minced 3 pounds Swiss chard, stems discarded and leaves coarsely chopped

MUSHROOM SAUCE • • • • • • • • •

• • • • • • •

1/4 cup grapeseed or canola oil 1 1/2 pounds cremini mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 small onion, finely chopped 1 small celery rib, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 3 thyme sprigs 1 1/2 teaspoons minced rosemary Salt, Pepper

Step 1 - Make the wild rice: In a large saucepan, combine all of the ingredients with a generous pinch each of salt and pepper. Cover with water and bring to a boil over high heat. Simmer over moderate heat until the rice is tender, about 1 hour. Drain well. Step 2 - Meanwhile, cook the Swiss chard: Set a rack over a large rimmed baking sheet. In a pot, heat the oil. Add the shallot and garlic and cook over moderately high heat, stirring, until softened, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the Swiss chard in large handfuls, letting each batch wilt slightly before adding more. Cook, stirring occasionally, until all of the chard is wilted, 8 to 10 minutes. Spread the chard out on the rack to drain and let cool completely. Squeeze out any excess water. Step 3 - Make the mushroom sauce: In a large, deep pab, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil until shimmering. Add half of the mushrooms and cook over moderately high heat, undisturbed, until browned on the

1/4 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups chicken stock 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 pounds thinly sliced chicken scaloppine, pounded 1/4 inch thick 1 1/2 cups panko crumbs 2 tablespoons butter, melted Chopped parsley, for serving

bottom, 5 minutes. Cook, stirring, until the mushrooms are tender and browned all over, 5 minutes longer; transfer to a plate. Repeat with the remaining oil and mushrooms. Step 4: Wipe out the pan and melt the 2 tablespoons of butter in it. Add the onion, celery, garlic, thyme, rosemary and a generous pinch each of salt and pepper. Cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are just starting to brown, about 8 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and cook, stirring, until incorporated, about 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the stock and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Reduce the heat to moderate and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened and no floury taste remains, about 7 minutes. Stir in the cream and season the sauce with salt and pepper Step 5: Preheat the oven to 175°. Arrange half of the chicken in the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch or 4-quart baking dish

that’s at least 2 inches deep. Scatter half of the Swiss chard over the chicken, followed by half of the wild rice and half of the mushroom cream sauce. Repeat the layering once more with the remaining chicken, greens, rice and sauce. Step 6: In a medium bowl, toss the panko with the 3 tablespoons of melted butter and sprinkle evenly over the casserole. Cover with foil and bake for about 35 minutes, until bubbling. Uncover the casserole and turn on the grill. Grill 6 inches from the heat until the panko is lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE AT A HOTEL RESTAURANT, A MAN SEES AN ATTRACTIVE WOMAN SITTING ALONE AT THE NEXT TABLE.

Suddenly, she sneezes, and a glass eye comes flying out of her eye socket. It hurls by the man, and he snatches it from the air and hands it back to her. “This is so embarrassing,” the woman says, and she pops her eye back in place. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you. Let me buy dinner to make it up to you. May I join you?” He nods. The woman is a stimulating conversationalist, stunningly pretty, and the man finds they have a lot in common. He gets her phone number and asks, “You are the most charming woman I’ve ever encountered. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.”

A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL MANAGER WAS GOING HOME IN HIS CAR WHEN HE SAW TWO MEN ALONG THE ROADSIDE EATING GRASS...

Astonished by the sight, he ordered his driver to stop and got out to investigate. He asked one man “Why are you eating grass?”“We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.” “Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I’ll feed you” the manager said. “But sir, I have a wife and five children with me. They are over there, under that tree”. “Bring them along,” the manager replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, “You come with us also.” The second man, in a pitiful voice then said, “But sir, I also have a wife and seven children with me!”

“Bring them all, as well,” the manager answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as it was. One of the poor fellows turned to the Manager and said, “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.” The manager replied, “Glad to do it. You’ll really love my place; the grass is almost 1 meter high!”

TWO BLONDE PILOTS... On their first commercial flight together two blonde pilots, best friends for years, are finally flying together after years of being co-pilots for more experienced captains. The cockpit was finally theirs. The flight goes very smoothly and they congratulate each other as they are coming into land. As they approach the runway it is obvious they are going much too fast. The back wheels of the plane barely touch asphalt before they leave then airstrip entirely, the plane barreling through tall grass until they crash directly into the side of the airport. Clearing debris from her face the pilot says to her co-polite “Oh my god... Did you see that? That runway was way too short!” “Yeah, but it must’ve been 2 miles wide!”

MY WIFE AND I WERE HAPPY FOR TWENTY YEARS. Then we met.

TORQUING CARS! STEVE MCQUEEN TRIED TO BUY THE ‘68 MUSTANG FROM BULLITT – TWICE

It is one of the most famous cars in cinema history, up there with Michael Caine’s Mini Cooper from The Italian Job and Michael J Fox’s DeLorean from Back to the Future. Steve McQueen may have had top billing in the 1968 thriller Bullitt, but the real star of the film was the green Ford Mustang 390 GT he drove in the movie’s famous chase scene. That Mustang is on display this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, alongside a letter from the actor himself which reveals his unsuccessful battle to buy the famous car. In 1977, three years before his death at the age of 50, McQueen wrote to the car’s owner Robert Kiernan, a New Jersey resident who had bought it for $6,000 in 1974, after seeing it advertised in a magazine. McQueen had tried to buy the car from its previous owner, but it slipped through his grasp. His curt four-sentence letter to Kiernan begins “Again, I would like to appeal to you”, suggesting it wasn’t the first time the actor had been in touch. In full, the letter reads: Dear Mr Keirnan, Again, I would like to appeal to you to get back my ‘68 Mustang. I would like very much to keep it in the family in its original condition as it was used in the film, rather than have it restored; which is simply personal with me. I would be happy to try to find you another Mustang similar to the one you have, if there is not too much monies involved in it. Otherwise, we had better forget it. With kindest regards, I remain Very truly yours, Steve McQueen

THOUSANDS OF CARS DEEMED TOO DANGEROUS FOR THE ROAD

Thousands of people are driving ‘death mobiles’ on our roads - putting their lives and those of others at serious risk, new figures reveal. They show that 6,000 owners turned up for their NCT this year with cars that were so unroadworthy that test centre staff advised them to have the vehicles towed, rather than driven, away. As a sign of the gravity attached to such discoveries, the vehicles also had a special sticker put on their windscreens in order to indicate their perilous status. An NCT official read out a formal statement to each owner, detailing why and how their car was dangerous and unroadworthy. The figures for ‘fail dangerous’ vehicles remain stubbornly consistent year after year. Those for 2014, for example, came to 4,800. The total up to early December this year ran to 5,903. Why are people risking lives in such fashion? According to sources, the frightening thing is that the vast majority of owners are completely shocked at the news of how unsafe their car is, and immediately agree to have it towed away. However, a minority ignore warnings and drive off. Car testing is overseen by the Road Safety Authority and when contacted by the Irish Independent, a spokesman said: “The vehicles were considered to constitute a direct and immediate risk to road safety and should not be used on the road under any circumstances.” He added that it is an offence to drive such a vehicle. There is concern that so many people are driving vehicles in such condition, putting themselves and other road users at risk. The RSA spokesman added: “When the NCT was first introduced, more than 4pc of vehicles failed with a dangerous defect. “Since then there has been a phenomenal increase in the number, and age, of cars on our roads. “In today’s terms, that would be 60,000 dangerously defective vehicles on our roads if we didn’t have the NCT.” The increase in detections is attributable to higher volumes of older cars being tested more regularly (every year for those aged 10 and over).Meanwhile, the first-time pass rate for all cars tested so far this year is much in line with last (48pc first-time pass, 90.8pc re-test pass). TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Development and Coaching Officer. In the Munster 40X20 Senior Doubles semi-final Dominic Lynch and Jack O’Shea from Glenbeigh lost out to Clare’s Colin Creahan and Diarmuid Nash 21-15, 21-19.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR ANOTHER GOOD WEEK IN KERRY SPORT: One of the few things that are guaranteed by living in Kerry is that there will be a good news sports story each week. This week there were much more than one story to warm a sports fans hearts in this cold winter period. ALL CAMAN GOOD ON SUNDAY: Pride of place has to go to the Kerry hurlers as a win over Cork was big enough to catch the radar of the national sports media. Kerry had done well in the second half of their Munster League game away to Limerick the previous week so confidence would have been high. But few outside of the hurler’s camp would have predicted their first half against the Rebels with Kerry leading by 10 points at the break 1-10 to 0-06. To make it even more impressive for the Kingdom was the fact that the lost both goalkeeper Martin Stackpoole and Jason Diggins inside the first ten minutes to injuries. But that is the reason why there is a panel and it will have been very satisfying for the Kerry management that the players that came in – Stephen Murphy and Tom Murnane and the other substitutes certainly stepped up to the mark. Cork manager John Meyler of course knows all about Kerry and while he certainly did not have a fuill strength side on duty he would have hoped that they had enough to beat Kerry. In the home dugout Fintan O’Connor would have been looking for his side to continue their progression with the League only a few weeks away. And there was no doubt which manager was the happier at full time in Austin Stack Park. While this was a great win for Kerry they know that they will need to follow it up with a good League Division 2A campaign. Kerry are in with Carlow, Kildare, London, Meath and Westmeath and will certainly be targeting promotion. There is hardly a better way to go into the new campaign. On a side note may are saying that this was Kerry’s first win over Cork in 127 years. Ballyduff people are saying that it is Kerry’s first ever win over Cork as it was their club that won the game in 1891 with the county’s only All Ireland title coming later in that year.

TRALEE SCHOOLS HOPE FOR BASKETBALL DOUBLE DELIGHT: The culmination of the Schools basketball season next weekend will see two Tralee schools bidding for All Ireland glory. The Presentation u16 Girls won an all Kerry semi-final when they defeated Causeway 44-30 to reach the decider. The squad and coach Dell White will now be looking to defeat Muckross Park (Dublin) in the u16B decider next Wednesday at 1.45pm in the Arena in Tallaght. The u16 A boys will see schools from opposite ends of the country vying for their All Ireland title. Tralee CBS The Green will face St Malachy’s Belfast on Thursday 25th at 1.45pm. Tralee CBS defeated Bandon is a cracking semi-final in UL winning by the bare minimum 39-38. Tralee were down 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and trailed by 6 at the half 20-26. The Kerry boys were still behind at the end of the third quarter with 5 points between the sides and a big last 10 minutes was needed. Ruairi O’Rahilly and Dale Counihan have a very resilient squad and they fought back to trail by just one with 5 second on the clock. Tralee won 2 free throws and the outstanding Rapolas Bulvydas was exactly the player that you would want to have this huge responsibility. And it was never really in doubt as he drained both free throws to send the boys through the big game in the National Basketball Arena. TOP GIRL: The good news for Kerry continued when Ballymac’s Ciara Griffin was named as captain of the Republic of Ireland Ladies rugby team. Ciara has been on the Irish team since 2016 when she made her debut against Wales and has 17 caps. The 24 year old Limerick primary school teacher has played with Castleisland and Tralee before moving to UL Bohemians last season and won the All Ireland League with the club. She was also part of the Munster Inter Pro winning team last season. The Irish Head Coach Adam Griggs said that Girffin stood out as a natural leader and has an excellent work ethic. KERRY GROUP’S ON ITS BIKE AGAIN: One of the other things that is true about sport in Kerry is that if it

Friday 19th January 2018

ever lost the support of the Kerry Group it would certainly be much the poorer. The hugely successful worldwide company will again be the title sponsor of the Kerry Group Ras Mumhan which will bring the cream of amateur riders from England, Scotland, the Isle of Mann and Holland to take on the best of the Irish. The four stage race will again be based in Killorglin and will take place over the Easter weekend from March 30th to April 2nd. WEEKLY NOTES: GOOD YEAR IN THE ALLEY’S: Kerry handball celebrated a very successful 2017 at its recent AGM. Looking back over the year Chairman Christy Moriarty congratulated the sports multiple All Ireland winners over the last 12 months - Dominick Lynch, JohJoe Quirke, Jack O’Shea & Daire Keane. It was also a good year at Juvenile level with Glenbeigh’s Sean Quirke winning the Munster u14 title and Daire Keane winning his fourth in four years amongst the highlights. Leah Morris and Rosin Smith are amongst the girls who had a good year despite just losing out in the u12 Doubles Munster final. On the home front he congratulated the Glenbeigh handball club on the refurbishment of their 40x20 alley. The reinstatement of the Senior County Championship, won by Dominic Lynch who defeated club mate Jack O’Shea in front of a packed hall, was a big success. The meeting also paid tribute to long serving Kerry handball official Brendan Falvey who has retired from his role of Munster Juvenile Officer. The Chairman thanked all for their assistance during the year; players, Kerry GAA, County officers, trainers, parents and those how assisted with the collections and selling of match programs. He also thanked the media for their coverage during 2017 and hoped for more during the coming year. The Election of Officers saw the following Committee in place for the coming year: President: Paddy Downey Chairman, Chair Christy Moriarty, Vice Chair Pat Keane, Secretary Danny Riordan, Treasurer John Joe Quirke, Assistant Treasurer Pat Keane, Children’s Officer Bernie Reen, PRO Jack O’Connor with Ashley Prenderville as the

HARRIERS HAPPY: Tralee Harriers athletes Orla O’Reilly, Elinor Dennison, Rachel Bowler, Cillian Griffin and Cathal Fitzgibbon all returned from the Munster Indoor Senior and Masters championships with a haul of medals. There was further good news for Rachel as she has been selected by the Juvenile Committee of the Athletic Association of Ireland as the Juvenile Star of the Year for County Kerry at the Emerald Crystal National Star Awards. She is being honoured for a great season in 2017. DÉJÀ VU AT THE DOGS: With last Friday night’s card cancelled due to the bad weather the races will be run this Friday night. Bus to Powerstown: Kerry coursing fans can take the easy way to the big Clonmel meeting as Dublin Bus are running a bus from Tralee on February 10th to 12th inclusive. The bus will leave Austin Stack Park at 6.45am and costs e10 return. More details can be had on 087 1627641. WARRIORS UNBEATEN IN 5: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are still well in contention for the SuperLeague title and are now unbeaten in 5 games. The latest win came away to Moycullen with a three point win following a tough encounter. The Tralee side are no in outright second place behind UCD Marian. The Warriors started brightly and were 9 ahead coming near the end of the opening quarter but two late baskets by the home side left the visitors 21-17 in front. In the second quarter the Warriors again opened a big gap and were 11 in front at one stage but Moycullen again fought back and at the half the gap was only 2 points 38-36. The tables turned in the third quarter and it was the Warriors that had to fight back from an 11 point deficit themselves but 5 quick baskets in a row tied the game at 56 all. The excellent Trae Pemberton push the Warriors on and it was fitting that it was the American,
