BACK TO SCHOOL!!! “The two best days of school are the first and the last” While we can quite happily ignore the school uniforms cramming the rails in the shops from the end of June nothing signals back to school as strongly as the end of the Rose of Tralee Festival. Pretty soon we will see over burdened children hauling what looks like half their body weight on their way to school, dragging behind them a P.E bag and perhaps a lunch bag too. Many studies show that around 30% of school age children have back or neck pain. Excessive load bearing for long periods on immature spines could put children at increased
risk of future problems. It is generally accepted that school children should not be carrying more than 10% their body weight. Warning signs that a school bag is too heavy include: a change in posture when wearing the bag. We have all seen little people looking a little like “Quasimodo” bent over like the leaning tower of Pisa under the load. It is recommended that school bags be a rucksack type with two wide padded adjustable straps and ideally a waist band to take off some of the load. The bag should be worn correctly not suspended from one shoulder. The strap should be tight enough to hold the bag close to the body and the schoolbag should be appropriate for your child’s size. Tips for school: Wear your bag correctly not
dangling from one shoulder – most people will hang the bag over the same shoulder which can cause persistent uneven loading for the spine. The same applies for heavy handbags! When packing your bag put the heaviest things in first to make the load more balanced. Try to get everything you need into one bag rather than carrying several bags. Stand up straight when you have your bag on your back do not slouch, stand with your weight evenly on both legs. Keep active – it is recommended children do an hour of physical activity a day. Strong muscles will help prevent posture and back pain. Been overweight will place extra stress on the spine, hip
and knees. Remember: No matter how much you think you hate school you will always miss it when you leave!

SOARING COLLEGE COSTS TEMPER STUDENTS OPTIMISM! A new survey, commissioned by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU), has examined the attitudes and concerns of 474 third level students and 539 parents of college-going students. What the Students Say; 75% of students expect to find work in Ireland when they finish third level.Less than a third of students (30%) expect to have to emigrate to find work, compared with a huge 75% in 2011.Over two thirds of students (65%) say they are looking forward to a bright future in Ireland – compared with just 21% in 2011. Money concerns Students continue to struggle to cope with the pressure of third level costs - with two thirds (66%) saying financial worries are negatively impacting their overall college experience in 2017. This is almost on a par with 67% at the height of the recession in 2011 There has been a notable 6

increase in the numbers saying they have to work throughout the college term to help make ends meet. Two thirds (66%) now say they are working compared with 55% in 2011. Almost a quarter of students who work in 2017 say they are skipping lectures to do so (22%). Accommodation issues Accommodation is a source of major concern for students in 2017 with rental costs the main obstacle in finding somewhere suitable to live. Four in ten had not yet sourced accommodation at the time of the survey (July 2017). Financial support The numbers of parents supporting their children with college related costs has increased slightly since 2011 with 92% now saying they financially support their children through third level, up from 90%. The most common method of funding third level Friday 25th August 2017
is now savings (43%) up from 38% in 2011. 42% of parents are using their monthly income, up from 39% in 2011. Commenting on findings, Helen Courtney Power Chairperson, Chapter 23 – Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions Marketing Group said “it’s great to see that the optimism for the future of our younger generation is back. However one thing very clear from the survey is the day to day reality of coping with the cost of third level education,
with a large number reporting how negatively it impacts on their college experience.” “We would like to remind students here in Kerry that your credit union is there for you. Not only does your credit union offer special low rate student loans but some credit unions in Kerry offer bursaries which can help cover these costs. We would strongly encourage students and their parents to contact their credit union and see what we can do for you”.

THOMAS LYNCH FROM CASTLEISLAND, IS THE 2017 ROSE OF TRALEE ESCORT OF THE YEAR THOMAS Lynch, a business consultant from Castleisland, Co Kerry topped the poll among Roses and Rose Escorts to become the 2017 Rose Escort of the Year at the Rose of Tralee International Festival. Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result live on RTÉ One television last night in the Festival Dome and presented him with a cheque for €1,000.
There are 64 Rose Escorts at this year’s Festival and Thomas was paired with the Kilkenny Rose, Tara Roche for the first three days of the Festival, followed by the Dubai Rose, Lisa O’Donohue for the remainder of the event in Tralee. Thomas, who was sponsored by Grant Thornton, said: “It’s uplifting to see how the children and the town interact with the Roses
and the joy that they are experiencing. When we pull out a Rose’s chair, when we hold their hands coming down off the bus and when you see them kind of giggle and look back at the other Rose and say, ‘Oh, I could get used to this…’, that kind of lifts our spirits. It means we are doing something right and we are making the week magical for them.”

Fresh from entertaining all the Roses at the Sold Out Rose Ball last weekend , Chris is really looking forward to a big turnout in what is typically seen as the LOcals Night when the Festival wraps up until next year ! According to Chris , “these nights really rock... People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 60’s 70’ & 80’s ....It really
brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris... I grew up with that music , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into the older Music... we are talking Beatles, Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones, Wings, Pink Floyd, The Monkees Bob Marley, The Police, Deacon Blue , Simple Minds, Dire Straits, Abba , the list goes on... GUARANTEED! READ ON… Kinetic Health & Fitness
I finally opened my Gym last year and approached Chris in The Tralee Advertiser to help me. He gave me very affordable packages and great ideas to run in my ads. After 8 months I had hit my membership target for the whole year. I still work with Chris and the business is still growing

We can't afford to work with Newspapers and Radio. Its so expensive! Anyway our customers tell us they all read The Tralee Advertiser. Chris designs clever marketing packages that suit our budget. We can see the difference in our Till when our ads are running.

Coordinating with a major investment in our Brandon Gym , we selected the Tralee Advertiser as our only media partner in securing new members last Autumn . It reaches our target market in the Greater Tralee Area.. and they delivered cleverly designed ads that increased our membership bigtime!

They came up with this great clever ad campaign which has made the phones hop and actually queues out the door last week!! And all for our language grinds, buddy classes & adult classes thanks to Tralee Advertiser for helping us fill our classes in the first academic term in our new premises in Greenview Languages

They decide She went down to the door in her towel. She opened it to our neighbor, Bob. Bob looks at her, and quickly says, “Look this might be weird but ill give you €800 if you drop the towel right now. She proceeds to drop the towel, exposing herself to Bob. Bob hands here the 800 euros and walks away. My wife comes upstairs. I asked her, Hey, who was at the door? “Oh, just our neighbor Bob.” She says. I say, “Oh damn, where’d he go? Does he have the €800 he owes me?”
A RESOURCEFUL WOMAN...
A woman gets into a very busy restaurant around lunch time. She is told the next available table would be free in an hour. She holds her phone to her ear, and with a loud voice says: “Honey, you won’t believe it, but your husband is having lunch with his girlfriend at so-and-so restaurant” Half the diners instantly get up and rush to the exit..
THE TOILET BRUSH
A man walks into a store looking for a toilet brush. The store owner shows him a variety of brushes at various pricepoints. The man thinks for a little while, then buys the cheapest one. The next day the man is back at the store. “Were you unhappy with your purchase?” asks the shopkeeper. “We have other models that might work better.” The man agrees and buys a little more expensive one. The next day the man is back yet again. The shopkeeper, visually puzzled on how a toilet brush can be such a big deal, asks “What’s the matter, didn’t like the new one either?” “Well” replies the man. “To be honest it was pretty effective. But I gotta say, I prefer toilet paper!”
MY WIFE AND I WERE HAPPY FOR 20 YEARS...
that each person gets one wish. The first man says “I wish I was back home.” then disappeared. The second man says “I wish I was of this island!” and he was gone. The third man say “I wish my friends were back.”
WASHINGTON D.C. WAS IN COMPLETE GRIDLOCK...
As I stewed in traffic wondering what was causing it, a guy comes up and knocks on my window. “What’s it all about?” I ask. “You haven’t heard? President Trump has been kidnapped. It’s all over the news! The ransom note says we either deliver a billion dollars or they are going to cover him with gas and burn him alive. I’m out here taking up a collection to help.” “Oh, God.” I said. “Of course I’m willing to help. Anything. How much have you got so far?” “About six gallons.” He said.
A STRANGER WAS SEATED NEXT TO LITTLE JOHNNY ON THE PLANE
When the stranger turned to the Little Johnny and said, “Let’s talk. I’ve heard that flights will go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.” Little Johnny, who had just opened his book, closed it slowly, and said to the stranger, “What would you like to discuss?” “Oh, I don’t know,” said the stranger. “How about nuclear power?” “OK,” said Little Johnny. “That could be an interesting topic, but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat grass. The same stuff. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?” “What? I have no idea” said the stranger. “Well, then,” said Little Johnny, “How is it that you feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don’t know sh*t?”

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK AND ENJOYED THE ROSE OF TRALEE.
I had the absolute pleasure of doing the makeup for the family of The South California Rose. The ladies were so lovely and looked amazing as they went off to the Tuesday selection night. To ensure their makeup stayed camera ready, I used YSL Primer, Laura Mercier Translucent Powder and Urban Decay ‘All Nighter’ setting spray.
The Rose of Tralee is such an amazing few days, I attended The Fashion Show on Sunday and really enjoyed it. There were so many interesting pieces from the designers and brilliant news - sparkles are in! Every collection incorporated some bit of sparkle which I loved. I am now fully available for Makeup Appointments - occasion, weddings, fancy dress or theme - whatever you need! I still have availability for this weekend! If you want to enquire about a booking you can message me on 0873929778, my Facebook page ‘bexblah’ or you can call House of Glamour and mention me when you’re booking. I hope you all have an amazing week!

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT WEEK I’m just about getting back to normal after The Rose of Tralee. I initially said I’d go out 2 nights and ended up doing the 5 in a row - Friday until Tuesday. For me The Rose of Tralee is almost like Christmas in the sense that there are so many people home that you’d never see. It’s a great week! I know there’s probably a lot of you in the same boat and you’re thinking “how do I feel normal again”. I don’t usually(ever) do 5 in a row nights out and I’m definitely feeling it! So here’s a few tips for “Getting back into routine” / “getting back to normal” after a bit of a session.
1 2 3 4 5
WATER - If you know me you know this is always my first port of call. Make sure you are keeping yourself hydrated and drink at least 3 litres a day. Water will help flush out the system and make you feel like you’re doing something right. DONT STARVE - Just because you’ve went off track for a few days, doesn’t mean you should try make up for it by starving yourself. Go back to eating your normal amount and you’ll feel better. SWEAT IT OUT - I’m so excited for my gym session in The Brandon later because
I just love the feeling of sweating the badness out of me. Even go to the sauna if you’re not up for the gym just yet!
COOK YUMMY TREATS - I know my breakfast tomorrow will definitely be my protein pancakes with bacon medallions and I literally could not be more excited. Then for dinner maybe a homemade burrito, avocado is calling my name! By making food that you enjoy that you know fits your regular eating plan, you’re helping yourself!
SET SOME GOALS - Now that summer is basically over some people can sit
back and ‘relax’ on their goals. Because some people go to the gym for ‘the summer body’ which I mean, if you’re doing it for that and not your health or general well being… ok. But p ersonally my goals stay with me all year round. And I already have two mini goals picked for the rest of 2017 so I stay focused. If you’re feeling a bit meh after the recent festivities or summer in general. Go ahead and set a goal or two!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017
I LOVE PORK... Yum Yum !!
As ye all know I love pork... yum yum. At Çroí Restaurant, in the Square, Tralee (or should we now say the Tess Quarter !)... we only use Blair House Farm rare bred pork, . Here are some lovely ideas for the tastiest of meats. Make sure next time that you ask your butcher where your pork comes from...
BACON JAM Brightened by apple cider vinegar and tomatoes, our bacon jam adds sweet, tart and smoky flavors to countless dishes. We like this condiment spread on toast and served with an egg, layered into a grilled cheese sandwich or spooned on goat-cheese topped crostini
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •
12 ounces thick-cut bacon, cut into 1/4-inch dice (2 1/4 cups)1 large onion, finely diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 jalapeño, halved, seeded and minced Sea salt Pepper 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 medium beefsteak tomato, cored and cut into 1/4-inch dice 2 tablespoons tomato paste
METHOD
In a medium enameled cast-iron casserole, cook the bacon over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, about 11 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to a medium bowl. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the fat. Add the onion, garlic and jalapeño to the casserole and season with generous pinches of salt and pepper. Cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the onion is very soft, about 12 minutes. Stir in the brown sugar and cook until the onion begins to caramelize, about 8 minutes. Pour in the vinegar and simmer until reduced by half, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the reserved bacon, tomato and tomato paste, cover partially and simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until a thick jam forms, about 45 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Scrape the bacon jam into a jar and let cool completely before sealing with a lid.
BACON, FENNEL AND APPLE CHUTNEY INGREDIENTS • • •
• • • • • • •
1/2 pound applewood smoked bacon, cut into 1/2-inch dice 1/2 medium onion, cut into 1/2inch dice 1 medium fennel bulb—halved, cored and cut into 1/2-inch dice—plus 1 tablespoon chopped fennel fronds 2 thyme sprigs 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 Granny Smith apple—peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch dice 1 teaspoon ground fennel seeds 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon sugar
METHOD Sea Salt and freshly ground pepper 30 baguette slices, brushed with olive oil and toasted Heat a large pan add the bacon and cook over moderate heat until crisp, about 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain. Pour off all but 3 tablespoons of the fat from the pan Add the onion to the pan and cook over moderate heat until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the diced fennel, thyme, garlic and apple. Cover and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 8 minutes. Add the fennel seeds and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar and fennel fronds. Remove the chutney from the heat, season with salt and pepper and let cool to room temperature. Discard the thyme, stir in the bacon and serve the chutney with the toasts.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FUEL ALLOWANCE Question Who qualifies for Fuel Allowance and how is it paid? Answer Fuel Allowance is paid under the National Fuel Scheme, operated by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. It is intended to help people who are dependent on long-term social welfare payments and who are unable to meet their heating needs. The fuel season for 2017–2018 starts on Monday 2 October 2017. Under the scheme, a Fuel Allowance of €22.50 per week is generally paid with your social welfare payment. For the 2017–2018 fuel season, the total allowance of €585 can be paid in two equal lump sums, one at the start of the season in October and the second in January. To avail of this payment option, you must complete the form FA CPF 1 which is available from your local post office or social welfare office. You can also get this form by texting FORM FUELCHANGE, followed by your name and address, to 51909. To get the lump sum in October 2017, you must submit your completed form before 15 September 2017. If you submit your form after this date there is no guarantee that you will receive the lump sum in October, but your weekly payment will continue until the January lump sum is issued. Fuel Allowance is a means-tested payment. If you are getting a non-contributory social welfare payment, you are accepted as satisfying the means test. You must live alone or with someone who also qualifies for the allowance – you cannot get the allowance if you live with someone who does not qualify. Where two or more people living in the same household qualify for the allowance, only one allowance is paid. If your heating needs are met in other ways (for example, if you live in local authority housing where heating is provided), you do not qualify for Fuel Allowance. If you think you are eligible, you should apply immediately because the allowance will not be backdated after the start of the fuel season in October. The application form for Fuel Allowance (NFS1) is available at your post office or social welfare office, or by texting FORM FUEL followed by your name and address to 51909.

TORQUING CARS! LEGENDARY VOLKSWAGEN CAMPER VAN MAKING A COMEBACK WITH ONE HUGE DIFFERENCE FROM THE ORIGINAL
The legendary Volkswagen camper van is making a comeback with a modern interpretation of the classic car. Potential customers wrote to the German car giant begging them to turn the concept unveiled in January into reality. Now Volkswagen has announced their much-loved vehicle, popular with surfers and hippies, will make a return by 2022. And this time it will be electric. The all-electric four door vehicle - dubbed the I.D. Buzz - will be a new take on the original model with 22 inch wheels and two tone paint. It will fit eight people and hold up to 162.5 cubic feet of goods when the seats are folded or removed. There’s also a front boot, just like the original Beetle. The original VW Microbus, better-known to Brits as the camper, had just 30bhp (brake horse power) in the 1950s. It continues to be a super-desirable vehicle in the UK, with car parks at British beaches filled with them throughout the year. The most sought after models now sell for in excess of £100,000. The I.D. Buzz will have more than ten times the power of the original camper and be capable of 0-60mph in just five seconds.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HYBRID, A PLUG-IN HYBRID, AND AN ELECTRIC ‘EV’ CAR?
The UK government has announced that there will be no more new petrol or diesel cars for sale after the year 2040. This describes most of the cars currently trundling around Her Majesty’s highways and byways, as well as the vast majority of cars worldwide. So when this new law is enacted, what will we be left with? Well, pretty much anything you want. With the exception of a handful of smaller producers, all the mainstream car brands currently offer vehicles that comply with the 2040 rule, in addition to some that won’t. In fact, if the law was passed tomorrow, car buyers wouldn’t find it that much of a struggle to find a model they’d be happy to purchase. That’s because hybrid cars – those with wheels driven by both a normal engine and an electric motor – will still be on the market after 2040. The only cars that won’t be on sale after 2040 are pure petrol and pure diesel cars. These are a dying breed anyway, with manufacturers in every segment embracing hybrid, electric and other technologies in order to save their customers money and reduce pollution. And remember that the 2040 rule only applies to sales – driving and owning a petrol or diesel car will, as far as we’re aware, also be perfectly legal after this date. The term ‘hybrid’ car is technically quite vague, but in the context of cars almost always refers to a petrol-electric powertrain.A hybrid vehicle will almost always be able to charge its own batteries using the petrol engine. An electric car is one that runs on, and is ‘charged up’ with, electric power alone.Electric cars are becoming commonplace thanks to certain financial advantages, including tax breaks and the lower cost of “filling up” compared to a tank of petrol. Environmentally, there are still big questions as to where the electricity for electric cars will come from, with some critics pointing out that the indirect emissions from electric vehicles are comparable to those of a petrol-electric hybrid.Whatever happens, it’s important to remember that technology develops rapidly, and that there’s more to mobility than petrol pumps and charging cables. It is exceptionally difficult to predict what will happen in the 23 years between now and 2040.
CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED TAIL OF THE UNEXPECTED
My Porsche Macan S diesel has been written off after someone drove into the back of it at 70mph. I want to buy the same again, but should I choose petrol because of the adverse press on diesel engines? NJ I would, but try to get a test drive first. HJ 38

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Division 1 of the Senior Football League after this back game. They need to get full points from Kenmare Shamrocks and hope other results go their way to stay in the Division. The Kenmare game is now scheduled for Sunday September 24th at 3pm.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY SHORTS ON THE GAME: Kerry will learn a lot more than Mayo from last week’s draw. Kerry have much more scope to improve but can Mayo play at the same level again? The only slight worry is that there are times when a team’s name is on a Cup and with all the games could this finally be Mayo’s year. One of the big talking points from last weekend was Mayo’s decision to play Aidan O’Shea on Kieran Donaghy. All of a sudden O’Shea was the ‘go to’ player on his side, the most outstanding player from Mayo. Yet a few weeks ago the same analysts were saying that he was not delivering for his side!! The Mayo management took a calculated risk by moving Aidan back on Kieran Donaghy thereby depriving them of his prowess at mid field. Did it work? In reality who cares now as Mayo are still in the championship. It will make a cracking replay with huge interest on the first few minutes and the match-ups. Oh to be a fly on the meetings of the management teams in Mayo and Kerry this week. Or like a certain incident a few years ago is there any tree near-by where we can send some up to eaves drop!! Finally on this topic it is rare that I would comment on someone else’s headline. As a columnist you often try to find that formula that will tell the story of your article in a few words. Sometimes we don’t get it right and the headline this week that Mayo are ‘Lions led by Donkeys’ is one that was certainly off the mark. But now what will be the headline next Monday? That’s the question!! PARNELL’S NEWS: Parnells Cúl Camp: A great week in Caherslee saw around 60 girls and boys participating in a week-long intensive hurling and camogie skills development course. The club has pictures of the week on its Facebook page. North Kerry Under 16:The fixture list is at https://www.facebook. com/TraleeParnellsHurlingClub/ showing Tralee Parnells facing Causeway in Tralee on Saturday the 2nd of September qt 5pm at home in the North Kerry Under 16 B championship. Their next games are Kilmoyley away on the 16th and Abbeydorney home on the 23rd, both also at 5 pm.

The club is delighted with its under 16 side as they have been crowned County Championships as they defeated Legion 4-14 to 1-15. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Strand Road side were beaten by Austin Stacks in the semi-final of the Coiste Tra Li. They play Dr. Crokes this Friday night in the Molyenaux Cup at 7pm. The club was proud of the efforts of David Moran and Barry John Keane in Croke Park last weekend and will be cheering them on again next weekend. Well done to the clubs u14’s who brought home the Shield from the Rose Cup Best of luck to all our Girls teams as their Town Leagues begin. If you are in Supervalu this Friday the club will be bag packing and all support will be greatly appreciated. GREAT WEEKEND AT THE COMMUNITY GAMES FINALS: Having come through their club, county and Munster competitions 145 Kerry participants took part in the National Community Games finals in Abbotstown last weekend. They represented 29 areas in the county. After all the competitions they brought home 35 medals – 9 gold, 7 silver, 13 bronze and 6 pewter. Well done to all involved and all their coaches. FINALS NIGHT AT THE DOGS: This Friday night we have 3 finals, the final of the Track Supporters Club A1 525 yards, the final of the KGOBA A7 525 yards and the final of the De Laval A6 525 yards. On Saturday night there is an all sponsored benefit night for Crotta hurling club with face painting, bouncy castle and top class raffle prizes and music after racing. We also have the semi- finals of the KGOBA A7 525 yards stake. The usual racing takes place on Saturday and Tuesday mornings while the track is also taking entries for the Track Supporters Club AO 525 yards which starts on Friday Sept 1st. KERRY 15’S WELCOME WEXFORD. Having lost away to Cork City by the odd goal in 5 in their opening SSE Airtricity u15 League of Ireland game Kerry welcome Wexford to Mounthawk Park next Monday night August 27th with a 7pm kick off. Wexford are top of the table after the opening weekend of games as they had a very impressive 9-0 win over Cobh Wanderers. In the other game in Group 3 Limerick defeated Waterford 4-2. Group 3 fixtures next weekend are completed by Waterford at home to Cork City and Limerick travelling to Cobh Wanderers. 17’S SCORE BIG WIN TO CONTINUE RUN: The Kerry u17’s went on a great run earlier in the season taking 11 points from 6 games. After the tough start following the mid -season break they have begun another good run. Following two darws against UCD and Cabinteely they put in one of their best performances of the season to defeat Cobh Ramblers 3-1. The goals came from Dillon Robinson 2
and John Hayes. Kerry travel to a struggling Limerick this Sunday with the game set of the UL All Weather at 2pm and another performance like last weekend should ensure another 3 points. CUP DOUBLE FOR MITCHELS AVENUE: Coaches always say at the start of the season that they want to win every competition they enter. But in reality they probably don’t expect to get to the final of all their competitions and win two of them. For Mitchels Avenue this was the case this season. The reached four finals and secured promotion as well as wining the Tommy Healy and Dominos Cup. It is a credit to the players and coaches that in their last game of the season last weekend they were as fresh as early in the season. The secured their Cup double by defeating QPR 2-1 thanks to goals from Sean Reilly and keeper Chris Heagarty who came up field to score from the penalty spot. It was tough on QPR (Quarry Park Rangers in case you don’t follow soccer!) who have not won a Cup in their history but for the Tralee side it was the perfect end to a memorable season when Brendan O’Shea was presented with the Dominos Cup from KDL Secretary John O’Regan. this Thursday @ 5-6 and Saturday at 3-4 in Christy Leahy park. All welcome. WEXFORD 2 DAY SECOND FOR SEAN: After a tough weekend of racing at the Wexford 2 Day and with the organisers experiencing some timing problems Tralee’s Sean Lacey of AQA Aqua Blue Academy took second overall. The 2 Day 3 Stage race was over 216 kilometers and Lacey took the runners up spot behind his team mate Cian Sutcliffe. Sean was also second on the final stage in the same time as the winner Paul McCarter. Time Trial County League: The last of the summer action – The Time Trial County Championship – takes place on Thursday August 31st with more details to follow. 11TH IN EUROPE DAIRE: Reaching a European Championships in ones chosen sport is a huge achievement. For Mercy Mounthawk and Tralee Imperials Daire Kennelly and Assistant Coach Paudie Fleming from Castleisland they achieved this milestone with the Irish u16 Men’s Basketball team this week. The duo were part of the Irish set-up taking part in the European Championship Division B and after 8 games they took a very creditable 11th place in the hotly contested tournament. Ireland opened their campaign with a tough 58-51 loss to Hungary with Daire hitting 3 points including a free throw to tie up the game with less than a minute to go. Ireland then had big wins over the Slovak Republic and Norway in a game where Daire hit 6 points. They went down in their next two games against Bosnia and the Czech Republic before Classification wins against Portugal and Bosnia. Daire Kennelly did suffer concussion during the tournament following a stray elbow but will be happy with his overall contribution and its testament to the coaching he received both in Mounthawk and with Imperials. RAIN STOPS PLAY: So much for summer sport was the cry for the Kerry cricketers as the Seniors game at home to Limerick at the Oyster Oval was rained off early into the visiting sides run chase. It was the same story for the Minors who were away to Tipperary. But in this game Kerry lost out in the ‘bowl out’ deciding process. With the season entering the business end the County Kerry 1st’s are in second place in the Munster Premier Division, the 2nd 11’s are third in Munster Division and the 3rd’s are in a great battle with Tipperary 2nds for the top spot in Munster Division 2. TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB: Round 7 of the Tralee Bay Swimming Club World Series was due to take place this week but was under weather watch at the time of going to print. We will have full details next week.

There are only 2 counting rounds to go in the Swimmer of the Year and 8 riders are separated by 5 points. Leading the way is Dominic Rollo-walker on 18 points followed by Tom Brosnan on 17 and Gerard Pierce on 15 points. James Slade has 14 points with David Smith, Frank Ryan and Matt Regan all on 13 points. There is a group of swimmers on 11 points who are also still in with a shout. Diary Date: The Jennie Johnston Swim over 8km tide assisted is set to take place on Sunday September 10th with medals for all and all proceeds going to the Fenit RNLI. ON THE GREENS: PITCH N PUTT: The Kerry u16 team followed up on their Munster win with a second place in the National Inter County Championships that took place in Erry, Co. Offaly. This is the second year in a row that Kerry were runners-up in the finals. The Kerry boys finished on 17 under and were only beaten by Cork who finished on 23 under. The teams was captained by Adam Kelly with Cillian Courtney, Jack McCarthy, Darragh O’Callaghan, Erin Moloney and Robbie Harnett the team members. The Kerry Senior team that will take part in the National Inter Counties this weekend in Ryston is made up of Jason O’Regan from Tralee, John McGrath and Damien Fleming from Deerpark, Aidan ‘Connor and James Duggan from Castleisland and Declan McCarron from Listowel. IN GOLF: The Munster Seniors Challenge takes place this week in Lee Valley in Cork. Tralee’s Gerard O’Sullivan and Dooks John Houlihan are the only 2 Kerry player in the field. Well done to Killarney’s Ryan Kelliher who has won the Kerry Boys Championship on Ballybunion’s Cashen Course at the weekend. By doing so he emulated his father Tomas who was a double winner in 1983 and 84. The Kellihers are the first ever father and son to win the prestigious title. TRALEE: In the 4 ball sponsored by DCS Group Tim Healy and Chris McNamara were the winners on 47 points. They were followed home by Conor Stack and Seamus MacGearailt in second with Sean Corcoran and Brendan Brosnan in third. In the MC 12 competition sponsored by An Riocht Stonecraft Kevin O’Connor took the top spot with 41 points. Second was Gerard Hussey 39 and Paudie O’Keeffe in third on 39 points. The Green Tee competition went to John F Fitzgerald on 32 points. In the Ladies Club sponsored singles Fionnuala Mann on 35 points with Mary Savage in second.
