Medical Matters OSTEOPOROSIS (THINNING OF THE BONES) by Dr Karen Soffe. Osteoporosis (thin bone disease) is common. It usually has NO symptoms until a simple low impact injury causes a bone such as the wrist or hip to break. Some people develop a gradual curvature of their spine and loss of height because of osteoporosis. Postmenopausal women are by far the commonest sufferers, although it can also affect younger women, men and very occasionally children. Other risk factors include smoking, excess alcohol, family history, certain medication especially steroids and being very underweight. Bone is living tissue constantly being repaired and renewed. This process, called bone turnover, involving digging up old bone and laying down new bone. The two processes are coupled together so that they balance each other. If there is a relative increase in bone removal, then bone tissue is lost and bones become thinner. The maximum amount of bone in the skeleton (peak bone mass) is achieved in our 20’s. There is gradual loss of bone with aging in adults, but major bone loss in women occurs with loss of oestrogen after the menopause. This makes bones more fragile.

Diagnosis can be made before a fracture has occurred using DEXA bone scan. It classifies how thick your bones are into normal, low bone mass (osteopenia) or very low bone mass (osteoporosis). X-rays may miss early bone loss. Small amounts of sunshine, vitamin D supplements, a calcium rich diet and gentle aerobic exercise are all needed for healthy bone growth and maintenance. Treatment of established osteoporosis with medication reduces risk of broken bones. The commonest medications used are bisphosphonates. They can irritate the food pipe (oesophagus) and so are usually given once a week or monthly. Other treatments such as strontium ranelate, raloxifene and parathyroid hormone peptides can be given as a 3-monthly, six monthly or yearly injection. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) also reduces the risk of fracture. It is a safe and effective treatment and has many additional benefits other than to the skeleton. If you are worried about your bone health, make an appointment with your GP of talk to one of the doctors in the new “Tralee Family Planning and Sexual Health Clinic” in The Ashe Street Clinic.

LEGAL CORNER

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

EU law - types of laws, their effects + examples Mary-Anne feels that we all hear about EU law all the time but she is not familiar with how it works and wanted to find out more First of all it is important to know that every law created by the EU is meant to follow and maintain several human rights, namely Citizen’s Rights, Dignity, Freedoms, Equality, Solidarity and Justice. These are defined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Additionally there are specific principles that refer to the issues of particular groups of people such as elderly people, children and disabled people. EU law also protects the four freedoms- free movement of people, goods, services and money/capital. The main law of the EU like our constitution here in Ireland are the consolidated treaties which have been passed in the EU and by referendum in Ireland over the years. These are the primary legislation of the EU. Then there are two main types of EU secondary law which are meant to give effect to the principles in the Treaties which are the European Regulations and Directives. The regulations are laws that are passed by the EU and apply to everyone in each of the 28 member states of the EU. They are legally effective as soon as they are commenced by the European Institutions. That means that they have to be executed by the national government of each member state straight away. An example is the General Data Protection European Regulation, GDPR, having come into effect on the 25.05.2018 across Europe. Second there are the Directives. In comparison to European Regulations Directives only frame certain goals that every member state of the EU is due to achieve within a preordained time. The way in which the government of the country fulfils this aim is not prescribed. In Ireland we could bring it into effect by an act or a secondary law e.g. an Irish regulation In 1997, the Habitats Directive [92/43/EEC] was transposed into Irish national law and the relevant Irish Regulations, the European Communities (Natural Habitats) Regulations, SI 94/1997, represent a fundamental shift in nature conservation policy and law. Other acts that may be undertaken by the EU are Decisions, Recommendations and Opinions. Decisions are addressed to only a specific person, organisation or company or to a specific group of people. They are only binding to whom they refer. Whereas Recommendations are not binding at all, but simply an opportunity for the EU institutions to make suggestions that are not supposed to have legal effect. Opinions work in a similar way, and announce thoughts on certain EU topics. These are non-binding, as well. Lawquip: Laws are like sausages… it’s better not to see them being made. - Otto von BismarckMiriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Ken invites Irish Times Editor to Fly to Kerry (or better still, drive!) TRALEE Chamber Alliance has extended an invitation to the Editor of The Irish Times to visit Kerry’s Capital via Kerry Airport to learn first-hand the important role the airport plays in the development of the economy in the county. The Managing Consultant of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Ken Tobin, said: “A socalled analysis in Saturday’s Irish Times was typical of an inside-The-Pale view of how the regions should bow down to superior government investment in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. Kerry Airport is a vital element when connecting this region from a business and tourism perspective and is deserving of increased State support considering the distance from Kerry to Dublin. Not only does Kerry Airport service the county of Kerry, Ireland’s most popular tourist destination outside Dublin, but it is an essential gateway to the entire region. The retention of the PSO service between Kerry Airport and Dublin

Airport was achieved due to steady increase in passenger numbers on the route year on year and an expectation of further growth in volumes to date.” Last Saturday’s article, which was not attributed to any particular journalist, questioned whether Longford, Carrick-On-Suir and Bailieborough should all have airports simply because Kerry has an airport. This ridiculous statement did not take into consideration the fact that the three towns in question are all less than two hours away - only 126km, 159km and 93km respectively - from Dublin Airport and all on motorways. It takes 3½ hours to drive from Tralee to Dublin Airport at off-peak times, while the journey from somewhere like Waterville is 4 hours 45 minutes, the first two and half hours of which are spent on national roads before joining the M7 from Limerick. “If nothing else, the Irish Times article has further highlighted

the need for increased Government investment into Kerry Airport to help it expand on the services being demanded and realise its full potential. The continuance of the PSO is of utmost importance to local industry and tourist interests and the value to the county is well known and understood by all who have used these services over the past 10 years,” said Ken Tobin. Kerry Airport is ideally located for anyone wishing to travel

on business or pleasure with direct flights to seven destinations including: London Luton, London Stansted, Frankfurt-Hahn, Berlin Schönefeld SXF, Alicante & Faro (summer) with Ryanair, and to Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional offering connections to the United States and Middle East. Kerry Airport is a member of Tralee Chamber Alliance.

the ambulance service are automatically alerted and will dispatch an ambulance along with a member of the Tralee Community Responders. The important message now is for the community and businesses in the town to know the locations of their nearest defibrillator unit with our Tralee office being one such location.” Speaking to Jimmy Murphy Tralee Community Responders “we are delighted to accept this kind donation from Cara Credit Union. Each Friday 7th September 2018

unit will save lives. It is fantastic to see Tralee Town centre serviced with a public defibrillator unit. We would like to thank all the team and the members at Cara Credit Union. Without donations like this one, we would be unable to run this service.” Tralee Community Responders was set up in 2016 and consists of 12 people from Tralee who offer 24 hours service, 7 days a week including CPR training to

many individuals and groups. In the two years since it was set up it has provided 54,000 voluntary hours and attended 458 callouts as well as providing valuable assistance to the National Ambulance Service. Of the 458 callouts, 289 were to assist chest pain patients, 124 callouts were cases of stroke and 45 instances of cardiac arrest.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KCFE Graduation Ceremony Celebrates Academic and Personal Success Academic achievement and personal success was celebrated at the Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) Graduation Ceremony at the Brandon Conference Centre, Tralee on Friday 31st August. An annual highlight in the college calendar, with over 800 in attendance, the event marked a milestone moment for graduates.

Students were conferred with QQI awards – both nationally and internationally recognised in Beauty; Business and Technology; Creative Arts; Childcare; Construction and Engineering; Humanities and Health Care; Science; Sports and Nutrition; and Tourism and Hospitality were presented. This year saw the first cohort of graduates in a number of new programmes offered in the 2017/18 academic

year: including Tourism with Business, Music Technology and Music Production; Applied Science; Food Nutrition and Science and Advanced Art, Craft and Design. From this September, Kerry College of Further Education (IKCFE) is again expanding its range of courses on offer. With the new Denny Street Campus opening for over 200 students this September, it is easy to see why the college is rapidly becoming the “First Choice” for school leavers and mature students.

The impact further education had on graduates was shared all evening with stories of successful outcomes being achieved through employment or progression to their desired third level course. In particular, representing mature students Gary Hewitt told a

Caitriona Mahony,Caragh Lynch and Kyle O’Brien who graduated from KCFE on Friday and received their certificates in the Brandon Hotel,Tralee.

Clodagh Mangan surrounded by fellow graduation students as they gradated from KCFE in The Brandon Hotel,Tralee on Friday Simon Kedziepski,Mickey Broderick,Michelle Desmond,Shawn Duggan and Hazel Page captivated audience of how his passion for learning was ignited and grew at Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE). Erin Rowan shared her story of how as a leaving certificate student, joining further education allowed her to secure her dream third level programme. Guest of Honour was this year’s Carlow Rose Shauna Ray Lacey who made an inspirational contribution about how everybody has a choice in life and how important it is to make the right choices. Principal of Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE), Mary Lucey, acknowledged the strong work ethos of the graduates without which they could not have achieved what they did. She also

acknowledged the support each graduate received from their families and the college staff which helped them as they made their journey towards success. Cllr Terry O’Brien wished all the graduates well in their future endeavours. Director of Further Education and Training with Kerry ETB, Owen O’Donnell, gave his insight into the value of further education in the lives of young people. He spoke about the growth in demand for further education programmes which has now resulted in the establishment of a second campus in Tralee town centre. Exciting times ahead for Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE). For information: call 066-7121741/email info@ kerryfe.ie or www.kerryfe.ie

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Free Third Level Courses on Offer to Tackle Skills Shortages in the Hospitality Sector If you are currently working or considering a career in the hospitality sector, there’s never been a better time to train and upskill. Through the Springboard+ programme, IT Tralee are offering a number of FREE and 90% funded programmes in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector. Skills shortages in this sector have been identified in recent reports and the Springboard+ initiative, which was up until now targeted at unemployed people re-entering the workforce, is available to all people irrespective of their employment status. Programmes in the hospitality sector being funded by Springboard+ at IT Tralee include: a Certificate in Culinary Arts (100% funded); a Certificate in Food and Beverage Operations (100% funded); a Diploma in Restaurant Operations Management (90% funded); and a BA (Honours) in Hotel Management (90% funded). Speaking from IT Tralee, Vice President for Development, Research and External Engagement Bríd McElligott said, ‘This Springboard+ offering gives people of all

ages the chance to avail of a very exciting pathway to a full and rewarding career in the hospitality sector. If you are a chef, bartender, waiter, manager, receptionist, porter, concierge or someone who would like to work in the tourism trade, we urge you to get in touch today to explore how you can increase your qualifications, in a flexible and supportive learning environment.’ Niamh O’Shea, General Manager of Killarney Park Hotel and Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) echoes this sentiment, ‘Given the severe shortage of chefs at all levels, a shortage of professional front line staff in food and beverage, and the need for professional development of middle and senior managers, there’s never been a better time to upskill through a Springboard+ funded programme and avail of the wonderful job opportunities that exist in the sector.’ Owner of award winning restaurant and wedding venue, Sol y Sombra, Cliodhna Foley explains why she encouraged her staff to upskill through

Springboard+ programmes at IT Tralee, “While it’s a very positive thing that Ireland is approaching full employment, it also means that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract and retain top talent. We are delighted to support two members of our management team in undertaking the Diploma in Restaurant Operations Management and Certificate in Social Media for Digital Marketing in order to ensure they continue to grow in their chosen professions and bring new ideas, creativity and

practical skills that benefit the business.’ Springboard+ Programmes through the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism department at IT Tralee are delivered on a part-time basis over an academic year. For more information on all programmes including application deadlines, availability, eligibility and start dates, please contact IT Tralee’s dedicated Life Long Learning team on 066 7191701 or email lifelonglearning@ittralee.ie.

Its nice to be nice! Lovely few words penned by Adele , Suzi and Padraig about this years Rose of Tralee festival , as posted on ‘Tralee , do you know ‘

“Very well said. We visit every year for the festival and enjoy it but I have to say this year was fantastic, great bands, loads of activities in the park, loads of garda and security visible so no trouble seen and a great atmosphere all over the town. Will be back next year. Keep up the good work “ Suzi Morrisđ&#x;˜Š “Well done to all involved. Most enjoyable few days. Really enjoyed the bands in the parades. Lovely set-up in the Mall. The whole week was a good promotion for Tralee. I wish the media critics could experience the warmth and the fun of the Festival. Roll on 2019!..â€?..Padraig Walsh

New Defibrillator on the Mall! (but sadly vandalised last weekend already!) “Tralee town centre has a new addition recently with the

installation of a public defibrillator. It is situated between Elvery’s Sports and Minx Fashion Shop in The Mall. Sincere thanks to Audrey, Eileen and their Fundraising team for this. We are delighted to be involved with them in this very worthwhile project. Remember in case of emergency dial 999 or 112. — Tralee First Responders

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: ONE-PARENT FAMILY PAYMENT AND GOING BACK TO EDUCATION Question I am parenting alone and getting a One-Parent Family Payment. I would like to go back to college. What are my options?

Gimme Five lads! Five in a row for our kerry Minors Football team !What a result.. well done lads ....Well done Peter Keane !

Answer Your options depend on your circumstances. You can go back to education and transfer onto the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or you can choose to keep your One-Parent Family payment. You will need to assess whether it is more beneficial for you to transfer to the BTEA when you go back to education or to remain on your One-Parent Family Payment and apply for a student grant. If you go onto the BTEA, you will not be eligible for the maintenance component of the student grant. However, you can apply under the student grant scheme for a fee grant to cover the student contribution and course fees/field trip costs (where appropriate). You can also keep your Rent Supplement, medical card and other secondary benefits you may have. If you qualify for the BTEA, you are also entitled to an annual Cost of Education Allowance of €500 as you have a dependent child.

Two big GAA guns are heading Tralee’s way Tralee’s Austin Stack stadium is set to welcome both Dublin

and Mayo teams next Spring in the National Football League . Announced this week , Kerry will play 4 home games , the other two being Monaghan and Tyrone. The local economy in Tralee better get set for a large influx of ‘foreign ‘ money as both Dublin and Mayo boast a large contingent of travelling supporters

If you stay on your One-Parent Family Payment and are studying full-time on an approved course, you can apply for both the maintenance and fee components of the student grant. If you study part-time, you may be able to keep your Rent Supplement. However if you go back to full-time education and stay on your One-Parent Family Payment, you will no longer be eligible for Rent Supplement. If you are on the Rental Accommodation Scheme or living in local authority housing, you continue to pay your differential rent. However, this may be affected by the student grant, depending on your other sources of income. Visit studentfinance.ie to find out more about financial supports while studying.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. THIS WEEK I’M TALKING ALL THINGS MAKEUP TOOLS! When I started doing my own makeup I literally used my fingers to apply foundation and eyeshadow for a good while, I couldn’t even imagine doing that now. Insane. When it comes to a perfect makeup application you need three things, 1) a good base 2) good tools 3) good products. Today I’m going to talk all about my favourite makeup tools and brands that I recommend. The brushes/tools that I mention are my 100% ride or die ones, ones that I ALWAYS use and completely recommend. THE BEAUTY BLENDER – If you haven’t applied your makeup with a beauty blender, you are seriously missing out. SERIOUSLY. And I’m not talking about the brands that made dupes of the beauty blender, I’m talking about The Original Beauty Blender! It gives your makeup an amazing flawless finish, it can be used for foundation, concealer, cream contour, or even to blend powder bronzer. Makeup By Mario also used Beauty blenders throughout his entire Masterclass, he swears by them! All you have to do is squeeze it in water to dampen it and then bounce it on your face to apply whichever product. You can get it on BeautyBay for €20 with free delivery.

EcoTools Angled Face Brush – I use this, and only this, for my bronzer absolutely errrrryday, or every time I wear makeup at least. I don’t have many EcoTools brushes, but I must get more because they are such great quality. Like I’ve had that bronzer brush at least 2 years now and it’s still perfect. EcoTools is also Vegan friendly, which is awesome.

Blank Canvas E20 Blending Brush – I’m an OG Blank Canvas Cosmetics fan, I have been talking about and using their products since the beginning. Literally. I absolutely love this brush for blending, it’s insaaaaaaane.

Blank Canvas F08– Again, it is used to apply foundation to the face, it is very dense which means it gives great coverage and also doesn’t store lots of product. So if you’re a bit apprehensive about the beauty blender and are looking for an amazing foundation brush, this is for you! I actually have like 7 of them, some for my own personal use and one for my makeup kit for clients.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Duo Sided Brow Brush – You all know that ABH is my brow brand, I use nothing else on them. The spoolie/ brush side is used to comb through the brows and the angled side is the perfect size to apply product with precision. You can get one on BeautyBay for €17.40.

So those are my absolute favourite brushes/tools. I have multiples of all of them and simply couldn’t do my makeup without them. As for brands, if you go for EcoTools, Blank Canvas Cosmetics, Morphe or Real Techniques you’ll be safe. You don’t have to get the most expensive brushes out there for them to be good, all of the brands and brushes I mentioned are mostly under €20. Also, it is VERY VERY VERY important to take care of your brushes and clean them REGULARLY!!!! Especially foundation brushes, you wouldn’t even believe the bacteria they collect. To clean them just use luke warm(not hot) water and any form of shampoo, baby shampoo is good, I recommend a scented version so your brushes smell fab. If you use hot water it will melt the glue on your brush and the hairs will fall out. You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all enjoying this amazing week! Since moving to Australia, I’ve been waking up a lot earlier, usually 6am.

When you think about it, being healthy, fit, going to to gym and improving your nutrition are all elements of self improvement. And I want to implement every method of self improvement that I can, because being healthy isn’t just about the physical but also the mental. You can be as physically healthy as you want but if you’re not as healthy mentally, you’re not living to your full potential! This year I’ve been reading more, through reading more books and articles, I’ve become engrossed in improving myself fully. The brain is a muscle too you know! Anyway, back to getting up early. I read last year that the most successful people in the world all share the same trait - they get up early. And by getting up early I mean EARLY - all before 8am. Most between the hours of 5 and 7am. Some studies show that 90% of executives wake up before 6am on weekdays and nearly 50% of self-made millionaires wake up at least three hours before their workday actually begins.

Why get up early? •

It gives more time for things like having a proper morning routine, journalling, goal setting, answering emails and… working out! All before ‘most people’ ever get up at all. Getting a head start on the day before distractions and obligations arise. Attacking the day on your own terms first thing gives a sense of control. By getting up early though, these people

are not losing sleep they are going to bed earlier and all get 6-8hrs a night. Willpower is highest in the morning which leads to better decision making.

Apples Done Different!

Apples grow wild around Kerry as well as the home grown ones ... And they are good for so much more than the humble apple pie... so here is a delicious one for you to try and to taste!

BRAISED CHICKEN

WITH APPLES AND CALVADOS

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 pound shiitake mushrooms—stems discarded, caps sliced 1/4 inch thick Salt Freshly ground pepper One 4-pound chicken, cut into 8 pieces 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and coarsely chopped 2 large shallots, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/4 cup Calvados 2 cups chicken stock 1/2 cup apple cider 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds Pinch of crushed red pepper 2 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 2 pieces 2 tablespoons minced chives

METHOD Preheat the oven to 175. In a large, deep ovenproof pan, heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Add the mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook over moderate heat, stirring a few times, until browned and tender, about 5 minutes. Transfer the mushrooms to a large bowl. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil in the pan, Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper and add to the pan, skin side down. Cook over moderately high heat until browned, about 4 minutes. Turn the chicken and brown the other side, about 3 minutes. Add the chicken to the mushrooms and pour off all but 2 tablespoons of fat from the pan. Add the chopped apples to the pan and cook over moderately high heat until browned, about 2 minutes. Add the shallots and garlic and cook over low heat, stirring a few times, until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the flour. Add the Calvados and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the chicken stock, cider, caraway seeds and crushed red pepper and bring to a simmer. Return the chicken pieces to the pan, skin side up, along with any accumulated juices. Braise the chicken in the oven for about 20 minutes, until the breast meat is just cooked. Transfer the breast pieces to a large ovenproof platter. Continue braising the remaining chicken until cooked through, about 10 minutes longer. Add to the platter and keep warm. Boil the pan juices and apples over moderately high heat until slightly thickened, about 6 minutes. Add the mushrooms. Remove the pan from the heat and swirl in the butter, 1 piece at a time. Season the sauce with salt and pepper and add half of the chives. Spoon the sauce over and around the chicken. Garnish with the remaining chives and serve.

TORQUING CARS! MERCEDES MAKE A BIT OF HISTORY WITH NEW ALL-ELECTRIC CAR

MERCEDES made a bit of history this week when they unveiled their first electric production car. Their EQC – a mid-size SUV – marks the beginning of a wave of 10 brand new full-electric vehicles by 2022. And Irish people will be able to buy an EQC next year - with the car scheduled here in September 2019. EQ is the electric technology sub-brand of Mercedes. While it is too early for exact pricing, sources here in Stockholm did not dismiss suggestions they will be in the same ballpark as the recently introduced Jaguar i-Pace which costs from around €84,000. Other rivals for the EQC include the Audi e-tron, BMW iX3 and the Tesla Y.Amid pomp and ceremony the new SUV was revealed to a global audience, with the company describing it as a “symbol of a new era in mobility”.Next up will be the smaller EQA (2020) and eight more will follow that by 2022. *It is technically emissions free so road tax will be €120. *It has a claimed range of more than 450km – but Mercedes admit the figures are based on the outdated NEDC testing system. They await new WLTP results which could mean a lower range. *It is All-Wheel-Drive because it has an electric motor for each axle with a combined output of 300kW (402hp) and 765Nm torque. The lithium-ion battery pack on its own has an 80kW output. *It can be charged from 10pc to 80pc in 40 minutes on a fast charger. You can AC charge at home but it takes longer. Charging at a Mercedes Wallbox is up to three times faster than that.

DRIVERS STOPPED BY POLICE TO LOSE LICENCE IMMEDIATELY IF THEY CAN’T READ NUMBER PLATE FROM 20 METRES(IN THE UK!)

The roadside eye test is part of a new police crackdown on drivers with poor vision in a bid to save lives Drivers who fail to read a number plate from 20 metres away when they’re stopped by the police will lose their licences immediately. The roadside eye test is part of a new police crackdown on drivers with poor vision in a bid to save lives. Every motorist stopped by roads police officers from three forces in September will be required to read a number plate from 20 metres (65ft). Police will be carrying out eyesight checks “at every opportunity”, and anyone who fails will have their driving licence immediately revoked. Data from the tests will be used to improve understanding of the extent of poor driver vision. The initiative is being run by forces in Thames Valley, Hampshire and the West Midlands, and is supported by road safety charity Brake and optician firm Vision Express. Sergeant Rob Heard, representing the police forces taking part in the campaign, said: “Not being able to see a hazard or react to a situation quickly enough can have catastrophic consequences.” He warned that officers will be carrying out eyesight checks “at every opportunity”.

WE ENTER A NEW PHASE OF TAX-BASED EMISSIONS THIS SATURDAY

We enter a new phase of tax-based emissions from Saturday (September 1) amid uncertainty and confusion over implications for new-car prices and road tax. Results from the tougher WLTP testing cycle will apply to all new car registrations from this weekend. But the test’s CO2 emissions and fuel consumption findings will be converted back to what is called a “NEDC equivalent” figure, so owners can tax their cars during the transition to full WLTP in 2020. There are reports of car prices rising as a result of WLTP emissions figures pushing vehicles into higher VRT bands. From January, only the WLTP figures will be used for all car advertising and official labelling. But the adjusted NEDC figures may still be used for motor tax purposes. From September 2019, all new registrations will be subject to RDE (real driving emissions testing). This measures on-the-road emissions, as opposed to laboratory conditions. RDE will complement WLTP. It is expected that the Government, at some stage, will confirm January 2020 as the date when only WLTP figures for new cars can be used for taxation purposes. The transition comes as new-car registrations are much the same as last year, but second-hand imports are up more than 10pc. (Eddie Cunningham, Indo Motoring)

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! available on the KDL website.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR VICTORY SHIELD OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED: Tralee will become the first town in Kerry to host a competitive soccer tournament with the 2018 Victory Shield taking place in the town in November. The tournament will see u16 teams from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales taking on our Boys in Green who are the holders of the tournament. Paul Osam, who is the team manager, was part of the FAI delegation that were in the Rose Hotel on Thursday for the official launch. They were welcomed to Tralee by Mayor Graham Spring and Mark O’Sullivan from the hotel which is the accommodation venue for the teams. It was a proud moment for KDL Chair Sean O’Keeffe and Secretary John O’Regan who also sits on the FAI Senior Council. John lobbied hard for the tournament and when the FAI officials visited Tralee they were very happy with the facilities at Christy Leahy Park and Tralee Dynamos and with two full size All weather pitched in use at the KLD by then every eventuality can be catered for. There are very few areas outside of Dublin, Cork and Limerick than can boost of having 5 soccer pitches adjacent to each other. And certainly this tournament and the co-operation between all the parties involved is one that could lead to other big tournaments being held in Tralee. The message from the launch is that Tralee is delighted to welcome the teams, officials and supporters to the town, especially at that time of the year. The KDL officials also said that they are looking forward to working closely with the FAI in the build-up to the tournament and continuing the close relationship between the FAI and the KDL. They also thanked John Delaney and the FAI for their support of the second All Weather at Mounthawk Park which is vital to facilitate the growth of soccer

in Kerry. These are exciting times for the game with the League of Ireland 15’s and 17’s now bedded in and the prospect of 13’s and 19’s being looked at by both the KDL and the Schoolboys Girls League. The Victory Shield will bring a big financial boost to the town as many of the families of the players will come to town for three or four days. The tournament has seen a number of players who have gone on to international careers taking part and the squads in this year’s Victory Shield in Tralee will attract plenty of attention from scouts and the soccer media in general. It will be a wonderful few days for soccer and sport in general for Tralee and the county. Make sure you come along and see some great games – we will have the full fixture list in the next week or two. CUP CAMPAIGNS BEGIN FOR KERRY SIDES: This is a big week in soccer where a number of draws for the big competitions takes place. This could be the last year that these competitions have been done at this time of the year as there are plans in place for all soccer to be played in the calendar year from 2020. But that is for another day. Back to the draw and from a Tralee point of view in the FAI Junior Cup Tralee Celtic are at home to Lifford Celtic, Strand Road and Mitchels Avenue will meet in what should be a cracking derby, Tralee Dynamos go to Kildysart Celtic in Clare while St Brendan’s Park are at home to Shountrade FC from Limerick. In the FAI Youths Cup St Brendan’s Park face an interesting trip to Killarney Celtic while Tralee Dynamos have a bye. In the FAI U17’s Tralee Dynamos are at home to Avenue United from Ennis while The Park go to West Cork to face newcomers Lyre Rovers. 15’S THE ONLY LEAGUE OF IRELAND SIDE IN ACTION: The Kerry 15’s League of Ireland side are in action this weekend in Friday 7th September 2018

a vital time in the second game of the League Shield. Kerry had a great win at home to Waterford in their first game while their opponents on Saturday Carlow/ Kilkenny won 4-0 away to Cobh Ramblers. Only one team from the Group progresses to the Shield semi-finals so this is a vital game for both sides. It kicks off at 2pm in Deadimus Park in Kilkenny. LOCAL SEASON CONTINUES: The Kerry District League and the Kerry Schoolboys Leagues get underway this weekend – the Kerry Schoolgirls still have a few weeks of pre-season left. In the Kerry District League there is a lot of anticipation to see which clubs have signed new players and how will the new managers get on. Last season it was Killarney Celtic that were the team to beat in the Premier but there were signs that Tralee Dynamos and the Park are going in the right directions after a few tough seasons. Dynamos are in the Denny Premier this season following the re-drawing of the teams in the League and with Mitchels Avenue and Tralee Celtic also in the 9 team division there will be some scrap for points in all those derbies. The Park are trying to get back to the top level and are in 1B along with 7 other teams. Also here from a local point of view are Windmill United and Classic B but the Park would be expected to be challenging for a top spot all season. Strand Road are in an 8 team Denny Division 1A with promotion to the Premier the goal. There is a new team in the town with Manor West FC staring life in Denny Division 2B. They will play out of Mounthawk Park and are at home to Sneem Santos this Sunday at 11.30 which will be an exciting time for all those involved in the new team. The full range of fixtures for the KDL including the u17’s and u18’s, where the Park and Dynamos will have teams, are

SCHOOLBOYS LEAGUE: There are over 120 teams signed up to the Kerry Schoolboys League from 12’s to 16’s inclusive. Add to this up to 50 u11’s teams and already 19 teams in the Girls Divisions and it shows how big underage soccer is in the county. Tralee Dynamos, St Brendan’s Park and Windmill United are the clubs from Tralee with underage teams and all these will be kicking off their League campaigns either this or next Saturday. So for the moment the traditional soccer season is the one Kerry is playing in. This will change from 2019 / 2020 on as to be honest most of the biggest sports are now playing in the twelve months of the year. However from the players and managers points of view their concentration from now until May / June 2019 will be to finish as high up as they can in their division and go as far as they can in their various Cup competitions. That is what all the preseason work has been building to and it all kicks off this weekend. DRIVE FOR FIVE DONE AND DUSTED: Kerry 0-21 to Galway 1-14 – the score-line that will go down in history of the Kerry GAA when a 5-in-a-row was achieved. The win has gotten the media coverage that the players and management deserves all week so there is no need for me to go over it. But it is right to acknowledge the feat that has been achieved. Firstly by the team who are the first winners of the All Ireland since the age group has come down from u18’s to u17’s. This puts a different pressure on the players and they certainly handled that with aplomb. Kerry overcame tough games against Cork and Monaghan and found themselves behind against Galway. But they are a confident side who believe in each other and even when they were behind in Croke Park they always looked like they would come back. And so they did to ensure that the winning streak for Kerry minor teams, now standing at 30 goes on. Huge credit for the last three All Ireland wins must also go to Peter Keane and his management team and he must now be the strong favourite to take the vacant Kerry senior hot seat. (The inside track seems to be Peter alongside Donie Buckley and two ‘recently’ retired Kerry footballers whom I won’t name!). The winning streak, following on from a long famine, was started under the leadership of Jack O’Connor who seems to be happy staying with the u20’s but this could be a ploy to deflect attention away from himself

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER while behind the scenes his candidacy is still very much alive. Where the GAA has certainly gotten a lot right is at the underage Development squad set-up where many of these minors / u17’s have come from. Coaching levels have been improved over the years and while these squads are very competitive they must be in order to see the elite going on to wear the Kerry jersey.

But there was better luck for the u15’s in the North Kerry B Championship who defeated Lixnaw. They will now meet Ardfert this Saturday in the final in Abbeydorney.

Finally from my point of view as a soccer man it was great to see that a number of the Kerry All Ireland winners last Sunday already had a soccer All Ireland medal – from the Kennedy Cup – in their trophy cabinets. What a double this is for a 17 year old – now we wait and see how many go on to play for the u20’s and then onto the seniors. But for now they deserve all the celebrations and praise they are getting. It was another great day for Kerry sport. NA GAEIL LADIES INTERMEDIATE CHAMPS: Having lost the Intermediate Final last season the Na Gaeil Ladies made no mistake this season as they proved to be much too strong for an under strength ISG. Ayesha Roche of the Tralee side was the Player of the Match. They now go forward to the Munster section where they will face the Waterford champions with the date and venue to be decided.

ST PAT’S NEWS There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,21,25 and 27 and the next jackpot will be e2300. Juveniles: There was a great turn out again for the u6’s, u8’s and u10 Academies. The u8’s and the u10’s will take part in the Annual John Mitchels Blitz on September 15th. The u14 Girls took on Kerins O’Rahillys in Round 4 of the North Kerry Board and they won by the slimmest of margins 4-11 to 6-04. They were due to play Annascaul in mid-week. The u14 boys are training for the St Brendan’s League where they will play in Group 2. The minors went down to Castlegregory in Division 3 of the Central Region Competition and will play Annascaul / Lispole this week. Fergal O’Brien in on the St Brendan’s minor panel who were due to play St Kieran’s in their semi-final this week. The Senior B team had to give a walk-over to Spa in the Barrett Cup. Senior Football Championship Following their defeat against a good East Kerry side last Saturday, St Brendan’s now face Shannon Rangers in Round 2B of the Senior Football Championship this weekend in a must win game.

KERRY CAMOGIE TEAM ENJOY BLITZ: The Kerry U14 Camogie Team took part in a Blitz in Tipperary on Saturday. They defeated Waterford in the first round and then accounted for Kildare in the semi-final. However, they were very unlucky to go down to Limerick in the final. Well done to Team on their fantastic displays and thanks to Management of Michael Corridon and Kevin O’Sullivan of Cillard, Gina O’Donoghue of Causeway and Michael O’Sullivan of Tralee Parnells for all of their hard work. PARNELLS NEWS: Well done to all the clubs players who were on the under 14’s Camogie team that took part in the Blitz in Tipperary. It was a great day and the clubs thanks the mentors and Borrioleigh who were the host club. The club members are looking forward to cheering on the Kerry camogie team in their All Ireland in Croke Park this Sunday. Well done to all the under 8 boys who took part in the North Kerry Blitz in Kilmoyley. The club was delighted with the highly successful Blitz it held for the u8’s and u10’s. Thanks to all those who helped out in any way. There was hard luck for the minors who lost out to Ardfert in the County League B final.

The club is delighted for club member’s Devon Burns who was on the Kerry minor squad and Pater Doyle who has been crowned All Ireland Champion at the Fleadh Cheoil.

Congratulations to St Pats players, Caoimhe Dairo and Keelin Enright who played for the Kerry U13 Girls Development Squad last Saturday in the Munster Blitz held in Mallow. Both players played very well and contributed greatly to their team winning all 4 of their matches. Tony O’Donoghue Memorial Walk takes place this Saturday from the Windmill car park at 5pm. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Seniors are in the winners section of the Garvey’s County Championship after their win in Listowel over Feale Rangers 3-15 to 016. They face a big clash this Sunday at 3.45pm against favourites Dr Crokes in the Fitzgerald Stadium. A win will see them into the quarter finals while a defeat would put them into Round 3. In the Molyneaux the team went out to neighbours John Mitchels going down 4-11 to 3-08. Well done to Tomas Kennedy

who played at half time during the All Ireland final and also accompanied the senior players and met the President. There was a great turn-out for the Academy and well done to Oisin Priestly and Adam Quill who are the u6 Boys and Corey Boylan the u6 girls Players of the Week. The u11’s enjoyed their day at the Jerry Foley Tournament in Farranfore and thanks to Firies for the invitation. The u12’s defeated John Mitches but the B’s just lost out. Both teams are in action again this week. The u12 Girls just lost to Rahillys by a point while the u16’s were easy winners over Dingle. Training for the Celebrity Mamas Blitz continues on Mondays. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,18,19 and 21. PAT CLIMBS THE HILL IN TRIBUTE TO PAUDIE CASEY: Kerry Motor Club’s Pat Barry took part in the Donegal Hill Climb in memory of the popular club member Paudie Casey who passed away in June after falling it following the Donegal rally. A number of Paudie’s friends from the club also made the trip to the Northwest in his memory. It was a good weekend for Killarney’s Noel O’Sullivan Jr who was on the notes for Sam Moffett as they took the win in the Sligo Rally. Closer to Kerry and just over the border in Ballyvourney Ian White and Guy Foster took a win apiece in the Autotest. 104 NOT OUT AS KERRY 2ND WIN: The games of cricket, between Kerry 2nd and Harlequinns, have been very tight and this one was no different. The Cork side ended on 227 for 9 but a great effort by Awais Saghir who ended with 104 not out saw Kerry take the win and the runners up spot in the Division 1 Munster League. Kerry defeated Midleton 2nd at the Oyster Oval winning by 6 wickets. This Saturday in Munster Division 2 County Kerry 3 took on Limerick 3rd at the Oyster Oval. AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the semifinals of the Castleisland Tyre Centre A3 525 plus a top class supporting card. This Saturday night there is a fundraiser for the Annascaul GAA featuring the final of the A7 525 yards Buster final with lots of other attractions on the night. The 8 race SIS Sunday meeting starts at 6.38pm. The track is currently taking entries for the KGOBA A6 525 yards confined starting on September and also looking for novice 750 yards entries for A1, A3 and A5 class. racing office on 061 448057. ON THE GREENS – PITCH N PUTT: Tralee Pitch n Putt club are celebrating Jason O’Regan’s win in the County Matchplay. The tournament took place over two days at Tralee and Listowel with O’Regan beating defending champion John McGrath, Deerpark, in his semi-final. O’Regan’s club mate Eamon Sheehy got past Litowel’s Declan McCarron in the other last four game. In the final Jason took the title with a 5&4 win. Tralee’s Danny O’Leary was unlucky to go out in the Intermediate semifinal. I must mention my nephew David Harnett who won the Junior title to follow his brother Robbie who has won a number of titles this season! This weekend is a big one for the game with the 2018 National Ladies and Gents Inter-County Pitch and Putt Championships being hosted by Deerpark in Killarney. This is only the third time this prestigious tournament has been held in Kerry – Castleisland in 1968 and Tralee in 1995. Jason O’Regan is on the Kerry team as is panellist Jason Cregan. Kerry last won this in 1986. The action gets underway at 8pm on Saturday and 8.30am on this Sunday morning. ON THE GOLF COURSE: In Castleisland the Seniors winner was Willie Galvin with Cyril Quigley second and Mike O’Connor third. In the mixed scramble the winners were Mary O’Sullivan, Willie Galvin and Cyril Quigley. The 3 person Florida Scramble went to Declan Murphy, Jonathan Kelliher and John Slattery. At the Tralee Golf Club the winner of the 4Ball Round 3 Series were Derek O’Brien and Kieran Dinan. Second were Barry Murphy and Kevin Rolls with Padraig Daughton and Seamus Enright third. Tralee Golf Club’s Junior team have been crowned winners of the Kerry League following the final outing on the Killeen Course in Killarney. And in the u14 John B O’Shea Shield Mark Gazi took second just one point behind winner Cillian Courtney from Killarney. Finally this week all the best to the Kerry Camogie team and management led by Stephen Goggin as they aim to bring the All Ireland Junior title home from Croke Park.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A DRUG ADDICT, AN ALCOHOLIC AND A CRONIC SMOKER DIE IN A CAR CRASH

Three of them face the ultimate judgement. They’d have been sent to hell but turns out they did their share of good in their lives. So they face the last test. The alcoholic is given a bottle of Brandy, the drug addict given the stuff he digs and the smoker given a pack of cigarettes. Each of them are to fight the temptation for 3 days. The addict ends up taking the drug in the first day itself, the alcoholic takes the drink on the second day, both of them are immediately sent to hell. The third day goes by, the pack of cigarettes is still untouched. An angel comes down on the third day and goes “ I see you’ve passed the test” The smoker goes, “ well I can’t chew the cigarettes, you forgot to give me a bloody lighter.”

60,000 BLONDES MEET IN A CENTRE FOR A “BLONDES ARE NOT STUPID” Convention.

The leader says, “We are all here today to prove to the world that blondes are not stupid. Can I have a volunteer?” A blonde gingerly works her way through the crowd and steps up to the stage. The leader asks her, “What is 15 plus 15?” After 15 or 20 seconds she says, “Eighteen!” Obviously everyone is a little disappointed. Then 60,000 blondes start cheering, “Give her another chance! Give her another chance!” The leader says, “Well since we’ve gone to the trouble of getting 60,000 of you in one place and we have the world- wide press and global broadcast media here, gee, uh, I guess we can give her another chance.” So he asks, “What is 5 plus 5?” After nearly 30 seconds she eventually says, “Ninety?” The leader is quite perplexed, looks down and

just lets out a dejected sigh -- everyone is disheartened - the blonde starts crying and the 60,000 girls begin to yell and wave their hands shouting, “GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE! GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!” The leader, unsure whether or not he is doing more harm than good, eventually says, “Ok! Ok! Just one more chance -- What is 2 plus 2?” The girl closes her eyes, and after a whole minute eventually says, “Four?” Throughout the stadium pandemonium breaks out as all 60,000 girls jump to their feet, wave their arms, stomp their feet and scream... “Give her another chance! Give her another chance!”

THAT’S A LOT OF ZEROS

An aide comes into the Oval Office and says to Trump: “Sir, three Brazilian solders were killed in Afghanistan last night.” Trump looks absolutely devastated, nobody’s ever seen him like this. He sinks back in his chair, saying “oh my god” over and over. Then he composes himself and says: “Okay. Just remind me, how many are there in a brazillion?”

MANAFORT AND COHEN FLIP ON THE PRESIDENT. TRUMP IS CONVICTED OF TREASON. HE IS ‘HUNG BY THE NECK UNTIL DEAD.’ MIRACULOUSLY, MINUTES AFTER HIS HANGING, HE WALKS OUT OF THE GALLOWS AND ADDRESSES THE PRESS: “Fake noose, folks.”

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA O St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I should burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro’the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Savour lodged in thy house.l beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to over come the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary’s and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotions to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.R.
