Budget 2018

A Bitter Sweet Compromise?

Overview Finance Minister Paschal Donohoeʼs first Budget contained few surprises and followed the UKʼs lead on the introduction of a Sugar Tax. The influence of the opposition ensured no huge deviations on Budget Day with both of the main parties claiming credit for the positive aspects of the Budget. Housing was always going to be a focal point and spending was significantly increased to over €1.8 billion next year, with 3,800 social houses to be built. The increase in the vacant property Levy should have the desired effect of freeing up additional development sites, but the increase of Stamp Duty from 2% to 6% would appear to be counterproductive. Tax cuts were focused on slight reductions in the Universal Social Charge, slight increases in tax bands and some income tax credits. The retention of the 9% VAT rate for Tourism and related services remains highly significant.

Summary Main Points

Personal Taxation

The Main Discussion points in the budget were as follows:

• Revised Universal Social Charge Rates • 0.5% on income up to €12,012 • 2% between €12,013 and €19,372 • 4.75% between €19,373 to €70,044 • Home Carers Tax Credit increased by €100 to €1,200 • Lower Rate Tax Band increased by €750 to €34,550

• Universal Social Charge rate reductions • Earned Income (Self Employed) Tax Credit increased by €200 to €1,150 • Home Carer tax credit increased by €100 to €1,200 • Increase in Social Welfare Payments by €5 (from late March 2018) • Duty on Cigarettes increased by 50c per packet (20) • Sugar Tax on drinks to be introduced up to 30 cent per litre • Stamp Duty on Commercial Property Increased from 2% to 6% • Vacant Property Levy increased from 3% in first year to 7% in second year and subsequent years

2

Stamp Duty • Stamp Duty on Commercial Property Increased from 2% to 6% • Consanguinity Stamp Duty Relief (family transfers) at a rate of 1% extended for three further years

Families • Prescription Charge down to €2 per item • Monthly threshold for Drugs Payment Scheme reduced to €134 • Mortgage Interest relief to be phased out by 2020

These measures will also support other housing measures announced today.” Tom Parlon, Construction Industry Federation(CIF) “Budget 2018 makes steady progress in reducing high rates of tax for low- and middle-income earners but there is still some way to go before Ireland finds the sweet spot to protect us against the challenges of Brexit” Shauna Greely, Chartered Accountants Ireland President

DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY? Heartwave Cardio Screening is coming to your area soon, with the revolutionary BPro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The BPro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a Healthstats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely painfree. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people e.g. Sports Clubs, Business Screening etc. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the BPro to the South West during the month of October/November Wednesday 18th October - Thursday 19th October - Tuesday 24th October - Thursday 26th October - Wednesday 1st November - Thursday 2nd November -

KERRY HOTELIERS WELCOME JOBS BOOST AS 9% VAT STAYS The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) welcomes the retention of the 9% tourism VAT rate announced by Minister Donohoe as part of Budget 2018. Patrick O’Donoghue, chair of the IHF’s Kerry branch said the rate has been instrumental in the recovery of the tourism industry, which has created approximately 60,000 new jobs since the measure was introduced in 2011. “Tourism is an indigenous export industry which not only supports approximately 230,000 jobs - equivalent to 11% of total employment in Ireland it also plays a vital role in addressing the regional imbalance in our economy. The 9% VAT rate has been the single most important fiscal initiative for 10

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Irish tourism in the last decade and we are pleased the Government has retained the measure. It demonstrates that it has been highly effective in job creation and also acknowledges that we have a pro-tourism Government who see the value the industry brings to every part of our country. The decision is a critical vote of confidence in the tourism industry at a time when it faces significant risks, most notably from Brexit,” he said. Mr O’Donoghue added: “Tourism is one of Ireland’s largest employers. It currently supports some 230,000 jobs and is on-track to create a further 40,000 new jobs by 2021. Direct actions by the government including the 9% Friday 13th October 2017

VAT rate [and the zero rate travel tax] have helped level the playing field for tourism businesses to compete for visitors with other European destinations and are vital in underpinning and sustaining that growth.” “Tourism makes an important contribution to the economy of every county and town in Ireland. While the industry has returned to growth, with Brexit looming, a weaker sterling and a continued slowdown in tourism growth, there is no room for complacency.” Mr O’Donoghue acknowledged the important support provided by Government, Minister

Paschal Donohoe and by Tourism Ministers Shane Ross and Brendan Griffin as well as those public representatives across the country who strive to ensure that tourism remains at the centre of Government economic policy and its important role in growing the Irish economy is recognised.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... PETER SIRR PLAY KRAKOW DEBUTS AT SIAMSA TÍRE Siamsa Tíre supports a national writing platform and hosts a Rehearsed Reading in association with Listowel Writers Week on Sunday 15th October at 7pm. Winner of the Eamon Keane Full Length Play Award, Krakow is the first stage play by acclaimed Irish writer/poet Peter Sirr. For this Rehearsed Reading, Neil Flynn directs a top cast of Irish actors – Gerard Byrne (Malachy, Fair City), Geraldine Plunkett (Mary, Glenroe), Moya Farrelly (This is my Father) and Peter Hanly (Braveheart). In association with Listowel Writer’s Week, Siamsa Tíre provides a unique opportunity for up-and-coming playwrites to work closely with professional directors and actors and experience their work being performed within a theatrical environment.

Krakow is a story of a man trying to deal with the death of his wife –living in a shed at the bottom of his garden and refusing to leave it even as his wife is being waked in the house, Jim seems to be a man in the grip of a breakdown. This is a love story and a study of loss that proves there is nothing so funny as tragedy. Elizabeth Dunn, Chairperson, Listowel Writers Week comments, “We are delighted to be able to facilitate this wonderful free event through our Eamon Keane Full Length Play Award. We are very grateful to our sponsors Bill Walsh of Aspire Technology and Siamse Tíre, Tralee whose generosity facilitates this annual event”. She added, “I can think of no greater honour than to have one’s play published and

shared with an audience in the fabulous theatre at Siamse Tíre and look forward to congratulating and meeting Peter Sirr and the fine actors who will be performing this staged reading on Sunday.”

Peter Sirr is an award-winning Irish poet, who has published ten collections with Gallery Press. RTE has broadcast his plays Oblivion and Radio Carla.

PARISH SUPPORTING FAMILY LIFE‘ AT BRANDON HOTEL THIS SUNDAY

“How can parish support family life?” is the theme of this year’s Diocesan Assembly. Next Sunday, October 15th, will see 250 parish personnel gathering, from the 53 parishes and 12 pastoral areas, to explore the importance of family and ways in which parishes can support family life. This will take place in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee, from 2-6pm. Dr. Dan O’Connell, lecturer at Mary Immaculate College is the keynote speaker, addressing the importance of family. A variety of workshops will follow offering practical resources and ideas to support family at parish level. Concern for family arose from the listening process during the development of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan 2016 – 2020. This focus on family is timely as we launch our preparations in the diocese for the World Meeting of Families next August. Bishop Ray Browne comments on the upcoming World Meeting of Families: The world meeting of families is a celebration of all families: families with young children, lone parent families, happy families and struggling families. All families are accepted and treasured. Home and family are viewed as vital. It takes all sorts to make a world and the world meeting of families is a celebration of every family.

KERRY TOURISM TO LEARN HOW TO COMBAT BREXIT Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority, is launching a series of Brexit Information Sessions for the South West region with Kerry tourism businesses attending in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork next Tuesday 10th October. The tourism authority will provide local tourism industry members with details about its ‘Get Brexit Ready’ programme, a suite of industry supports designed to help businesses at risk or already struggling with the loss of trade created by Brexit. Kerry Tourism operators attending will learn how the programme allows individual businesses to self-assess their exposures and risks and provide a range of interventions to match their needs. Those attending will be encouraged to engage with the supports and tools available and to tailor them to their business. Speaking ahead of the event, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Enterprise Developmnet, Martina Bromley, said: “Brexit highlights the extent to which tourism is at the mercy 18

of external factors beyond our control. However, we can meet our current challenges by working on those things which remain within our control - our visitor experiences, competitiveness, capacity and skills. To ensure this, we are delivering this programme to support tourism businesses, in Kerry and beyond. We have taken care to design these supports in an innovative and accessible manner – allowing tourism businesses to continue to battle for British business while also diversifying into other markets with great potential.” The ‘Get Brexit Ready’ programme has a dedicated ‘Get Brexit Ready’ web presence which is the Fáilte Ireland one-stop shop for all the relevant information and insights that businesses will need – from development supports and training programmes to insights and market intelligence. The web portal also includes ‘Brexitcheck’ - an online tool whereby an individual business can input their own data to determine how Brexit ready Friday 13th October 2017

they are - as well as links to a series of market insights, tips and research to help tourism operators to recalibrate their businesses appropriately to navigate through Brexit related uncertainty in Britain and other markets. Underpinning the relevance of the programme, by the end of this year, Fáilte Ireland estimates that Brexit will have meant 300,000 less British trips here which, taken in isolation, would represent €88m in revenue and an estimated 1,900

tourism jobs lost had the fall in British numbers not been compensated by a strong performance in other markets. Contact details for Registration Registration: 9am-9.30am Session: 9.30am-12:00pm Web: www.Failteireland.ie/ getbrexitready Email: Getbrexitready@ failteireland.ie Tel: 1-800 242 473

FENIT COMES ALIVE WITH SAILORS GALORE! Tralee Bay in County Kerry was the perfect arena for a high–paced weekend of sailing recently . Led by the Tralee Bay Maritime Centre with the support of Tralee Bay Sailing Club, 49er Olympic hopefuls gave an incredible ballet of spinnakers over three days, with top class sailors giving top class performances. The primary event was the 49er National Championships but the added benefit was that local dinghy sailors could see Irish Olympic sailors at first hand. With the addition of John Chambers Waszp design, the event was a great conclusion of the summer season. On the racing front, four races were completed on Friday afternoon , Sept 22nd , in 10-12kts from the south west on the west side of Fenit 20

Marina. The start line was just a few boat lengths away from the Marina bridge making it very spectators friendly. Indeed, one of the aims of the weekend was to bring the sailing as close as possible to the public as opportunities to actually see top sailors in action at home is rare enough. With four different race winners, it was tight racing and Matt McGovern and crew Robbie Gilmore headed back ashore with a narrow lead over the rest of the field Saturday saw the passage of a very active front, and despite a progressive drop of the strong winds, racing was definitely abandoned at 16.30. Sunday gave the sailors some great sailing conditions with 8-12kts from the south west. This time the course was located to the East of the Marina with the windward touching distance from the Friday 13th October 2017

Marina walls. The U–23 European bronze medallists Cian Byrne and Paddy Crosbie were on form with three second positions and ended their challenge with a race win but Matt and Robbie’s consistency was enough to secure the title. The weekend was not all about racing and the sailors returned the warm welcome given by locals by taking kids sailing and giving crewing experience to local sailors. John Chambers Waszp was

also a great addition to the weekend. TBMC principle Brian O’Sullivan and organiser Thomas Chaix were delighted with the outcome and are definitely looking forward to welcoming the 49ers again. Overall top 3 1st Matt McGovern – Robbie Gilmore, 2nd Cian Byrne – Paddy Crosbie, 3rd Robert Dickson – Sean Waddilove,

THE CHART HOUSE DINGLE #3 IN TRIP ADVISOR TOP 10 BEST PLACES TO EAT IN IRELAND Each year Trip Advisor publishes it’s Travellers Choice Top Ten list of the best places to eat in Ireland and indeed the world. Jim McCarthy’s Chart House Restaurant in Dingle is celebrating once again with his promotion to number three position on the list from sixth place last year. Lead position goes to the higly acclaimed Chapter One in Dublin. Jim attributes this and last week’s Michelin Bib Gourmand Accolade to the tireless efforts to Dingle native Head Chef Rachael Boyle and her team for preparing and cooking the best of locally harvested and locally sourced food and to the front of house team lead by the ever attentive

Susan McCarthy native from Annascaul. Jim is also quick to pay tribute to two other Kerry Restaurants who made the TopTen selection for Ireland - “Rozzers” at Killeen House Hotel in Killarney and Limetree Restaurant in Kenmare. Jim says that “Tourism is our bread and butter here in Kerry, and this abundance of recognition and acknowledgement from our visitors directly is hugely valuable and Kerry can be proud. These accolades do not come easy and The Chart House could not achieve this without the dedication of the people who work with me”

DANCE AND HEALTH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES TO TAKE PLACE IN SIAMSA NEXT YEAR Dance as we all know is a beautiful artform but did you know that the benefits are even far more reaching that dance as art…dance is good for your physical and mental health and well being and is a form of expression that offers opportunities for creativity and collaboration. To this end the Arts Services of Kerry, Kildare, and Tipperary County Councils along with Dance Ireland are working on an exciting initiative that will support the work of dance artists in Kerry. A researcher has been appointed to produce a training framework for dance artists working in healthcare contexts. Parallel to this work will be three events which will gather together best practices & expertise nationally and internationally in the area of dance and healthcare which will feed the research for the training framework. ‘Kerry will be at the core of this groundbreaking research and will also be hosting a Dance and Health Professional 26

Development Series at Siamsa Tíre in April next year’, Kate Kennelly told us recently. The series will afford dancers, healthcare practitioners and anyone interested in dance and health opportunities to collaborate and exchange information about the benefits of dance on health. The series will explore the many facets of dance and health work on a theoretical and practical level through discussion and movement. National and international dance and health expertise will be brought to Kerry. The project is funded under the Arts Council’s Invitation to Collaboration Scheme. Kerry County Council has for many years been a leading national example of a County that has embraced dance provision through its Dancer in Residence Programme. A result of this residency was the recent performance of ‘It Takes A Village’ at Siamsa Tire on Culture Night. The piece was choreographed by Friday 13th October 2017

dance artist Catherine Young and attended by 350 people who witnessed an intercultural dance collaboration with some of Ireland’s new communities who live under direct provision. The performance took its inspiration from the African expression that it takes a village to raise a child. The sense of camaraderie and ‘belonging’ that the work engendered among participants was palpable and has left a real legacy with friendships made locally and a sense of being part of the community that is completely unprecedented for the

asylum seekers and refugees involved. It all makes for exciting times for dance and interested parties should contact the Arts Office at Kerry County Council by emailing arts@ kerrycoco.ie or by contacting Dance Ireland’s Programme Manager at hazel.hodgins@ danceireland.ie. photographer Mark O’Rourke , The community cast of ‘It Takes A Village’ by Catherine Young.

TORQUING CARS! THE REASON WHY WHITE CARS ARE BEING STOLEN TO ORDER AND SHIPPED ABROAD

Gavin Scragg’s company has been broken into twice in 10 days - with a Range Rover worth £20,000 and an Audi Q3 worth £15,000 stolen. A victim of car crime has revealed why he thinks vehicles - especially white and German models - are being stolen from part of the UK. Gavin Scragg claims cars are being shipped abroad and says thieves are targeting SUVs which are popular overseas and white as it is a colour that reflects the heat. He believes German cars are also a target because of the type of technology and diagnostic software they have. Notrix Motor Company, in Offerton, Stockport, Greater Manchester, has been broken into twice in 10 days - with a Range Rover worth £20,000 and an Audi Q3 worth £15,000 stolen. Owner Gavin has handed CCTV footage to police in the hope of catching those responsible. He said there is a pattern to the rising trend of car thefts from both homes and businesses in Greater Manchester. Thieves seemingly prefer German models - and white motors. Police say they’ve brought down a number of prolific car thieves, but there has been a rise in professional networks springing up. Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin, of GMP’s Force Intelligence Bureau, said: “Part of the reason for the increase is austerity. “People see the theft of cars as a means of a quick-fix for money.

MERCEDES STEP UP PRICE WAR AS IT RAPS RIVAL DEALERS OVER ‘RISKY SALES’ STRATEGY

Fresh from blaming some rival dealers and distributors for creating a false sense of higher new-car sales, Mercedes this week outlined their own plans to get buyers into cars for next year. In simple terms they have declared a posh-car price war; and attacked some rivals over registering cars ‘no one wants’ to keep market share. As I’ve previously reported elsewhere (www.independent.ie), the marque’s passenger-car sales chief Ciaran Allen claimed rival dealers are preregistering cars to such a level that the ‘bubble’ will burst. He warned that no business could survive on the basis of registering thousands of cars that “no one wants” at the end of each month. He described the practice - called ‘pre-regging’ - as “reckless trading and the single biggest threat to the motor industry”. He added: “They can’t beat the logic of supply and demand.” We haven’t heard the end of that issue, that’s for sure. The other big push had to do with Mercedes’ own sales strategy: cars that they at least expect people will want. They say they’re planning an “awesome2 year in 2018. We’ll have to wait and see on that. Globally they are planning to introduce 18 new models over the next eight years - after a fair flurry of activity over the past few. It’s all about taking the premium number one slot. Rivals will not be easily removed, though, and are already battling hard with new initiatives and products of their own. But for now the main Mercedes thrust here lies in up-speccing cars for a lot less than the combined cost of the additional equipment. There is a heavy emphasis on AMG-like ‘performance’ kit across the board. They say they are increasing equipment on all C-Class models, for example, claiming the additional price (€700) is a fraction (€5,000) of the true value. Similarly, the E-Class, where they reckon €4,200 of equipment is costing a buyer just €2,200 with increased spec. A significant comment on that from Mr Allen: “That’s how we get younger drivers into our cars. We’ve never been in such a competitive position.” indo Motoring

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED CABLE CAR

I like the look of the Mercedes-Benz B-class electric. It generally gets good reviews. There are low-mileage 2016 models around for circa £22,000. This suggests they have depreciated by around a third compared. Are you aware of any serious cost issues or significant problems that have caused excessive depreciation? SH H,J .....Most electric cars seem to drop like a stone in value from their extremely high initial cost. Their problem is that their batteries gradually lose capacity, decreasing their range until after about five years the battery needs to be replaced at colossal cost. Renault and Nissan get around this by selling the cars and leasing batteries to customers for about £70 a month.

Fruits in Season make great Jam! Wild plums and Damsons- are in season now and make delicious sauces and jams. We have included some on our new Early Bird menu at Croi so here is two for you to try.

SPICY PLUM SAUCE

PLUM JAM

This sauce goes great with pork & duck

INGREDIENTS INGREDIENTS • • •

2 pounds small plums, pitted and cut into 1/2-inch wedges 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 lemon, seeded

METHOD Step 1 In a large saucepan, toss the plums with the sugar and let stand, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is mostly dissolved, about 1 hour. Step 2 Squeeze the lemon over the plums, add it to the saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Cook over moderate heat, stirring, until the liquid runs off the side of a spoon in thick, heavy drops, 20 to 25 minutes. Skim off any scum that rises to the surface of the jam. Step 3 Discard the lemon and spoon the plum jam into three 1/2-pint jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. Close the jars and let the jam cool to room temperature. Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

• • • • • • • •

3/4 pound quartered and pits reserved 2 1/2 cups water 2 teaspoons sugar 1 long red fresh chile, seeded and minced 2 tablespoons chopped coriander 1 tablespoon chopped dill 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar Salt

METHOD Step 1 In a small saucepan, cover the plums and pits with the water and bring to a boil. Cover partially and simmer over moderately low heat until the plums are very soft, about 20 minutes. Drain the plums, reserving 1/4 cup of the water; discard the pits. Step 2 Transfer the plums to a blender. Add the sugar, half of the chile and the reserved cooking liquid and puree. Strain the puree through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Stir in the coriander, dill, vinegar and the remaining chile. Season with salt and serve. Recipes by

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK!

I was looking at recent posts to see what I haven’t done in a while and I realised I haven’t done a Makeup Favourites post in a while… so that’s what I’m doing this week. But instead of talking about my usual favourites that I have mentioned before, I’m going to be talking about more recent additions to my beauty bag. I’ll include exactly where you can buy everything and how much they cost etc.

Face Favourites Skin Prep

I have been LOVING using the Farsali Rose Gold Elixir & Unicorn Serum to prep my skin. I usually mix the Rose Gold Elixir with my Fenty Beauty foundation to make it more luminous! You can buy the Farsali range on Farsali.com or BeautyBay and costs around 50 euro.

Foundation

If you follow me on Instagram (@bexblah) you will know I have been living for the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna foundation! I got shade 150 to match me when I have no tan and I am obsessed with it! It’s perfect for this time of year as it is a little more matte - but as I said above I mix in my Farsali Rose Gold Elixir to make it more dewy. Fenty Beauty Foundation is available exclusively in Harvey Nichols, but you can purchase it online at HarveyNichols.co.uk and they deliver to Ireland!

Brushes

I was SO sceptical about the new Ps Pro makeup brush line from Pennys… buuuuut, I can confirm that I am VERY impressed with these. They are SO inexpensive, like 2 and 3 euro, and actually work really well. My two favourite brushes from the line are, the eyeshadow shading brush & the touch up brush - which I use to set my under eyes and to highlight! I haven’t tried the foundation brush yet, but I’ve heard great things! Definitely definitely pick a few of these up if you’re in Pennys!

Brush Cleaner

again, I was talking about this on Instagram Stories recently. I have been loving the Blank Canvas Cosmetics brush cleaner to clean my brushes! I literally clean brushes so often that I need something that works well and works fast. The Blank Canvas brush cleaner does exactly that. I was initially sent the cleaner but I have repurchased it twice since. You can get it in CH Tralee and it’s 15 euro.

Eyes

I more than likely have mentioned this before but honestly I can’t tell you about my favourites without mentioning this… The Morphe X Jaclyn Hill eyeshadow palette! Now I have had this since it first came out because I ordered it off of Morphe’s US website(and paid customs) but it is now available on Beauty Bay which means you can get it with free shipping and without the charges! This eyeshadow Palette is honestly one of the best ones I have used for MANY reasons. 1. It’s so versatile, you can create so many different looks! 2. It has an amazing choice of warm browns, (key) 3. It’s such an amazing price for the quality, the eyeshadows blend like a dream!! So yeah, if you’re looking for a new eyeshadow palette, forget Urban Decay where you get 12 shadows for 50 euro - Morphe is the way forward.

ll Time in I am working Fuakeup Freelance m

I hope you all have an amazing week!

WEIGHT TRAINING

Hello my strong friends, this week I’m talking all about weight training and how it can help you achieve your goals! In general, people will practice cardio(running, cycling etc) and forget about weight training when it comes to burning fat. And there are still many trainers who will say that aerobic exercises burn off fat and weight lifting is only used to build muscle bulk. This statement is not correct because the more muscle mass one acquires through weight-bearing exercises, the more they will burn fat calories — even at rest. Cardio combined with weight training will result in effective fat loss. Cardio exercises will raise muscle metabolism during the activity and for a short time after the exercise session. Weight training, on the other hand, will

My current training split looks a bit like this… DAY 1 – LEGS DAY 2 – UPPER BODY DAY 3 – LEGS DAY 4 – UPPER BODY DAY 5 – LEGS DAY 6 - HIIT DAY 7 - ACTIVE REST DAY

raise your muscle metabolism during the exercise session — and for a long time after the exercise session. Some high intensity trainers have even seen their metabolism rise for several days following their training session. Whether your goal is to tone or build muscles, it is important to know what happens during the muscle training process. When lifting weights, muscle tissues are torn apart (at the microscopic level) from the stress, and it’s in the recovery period that your muscles become stronger and, therefore, able to support the extra stress. Usually the recovery period required is 24 to 48 hours after a weight training session so it’s good to train different muscle groups on different days. It is so so SO important to fuel your body efficiently when weight training. You need to give yourself the correct food especially carbs and protein, so that your muscles recover and you have energy to fuel your sessions. If you are in any way confused about nutrition and what you should be eating, get in touch with a good well informed personal trainer. I highly recommend Recalibrated Bodies, they strive to inform all their clients on why they’re eating what they’re eating and don’t cut out ‘bad’ foods. If you go to a personal trainer who tells you to basically eat plain chicken, broccoli and rice or something to that effect… RUN!!! A good PT won’t cut out food groups or drastically cut carbs, trust me. Anybody who debates the fact that weightbearing exercises don’t help people lose weight and fat should lift weights for one hour and see their heart rate go through the roof. I definitely sweat a lot more when I do a good weights session.

An important factor to consider when trying to lose weight is that lots of muscle mass can be lost as a result. As muscle mass will keep your metabolism high, try to avoid quick weight loss through miracle diets or starvation. This weight loss will be regained just as quickly. Instead go for a gradual fat loss routine by combining weight training and cardio, and allow muscle mass to build up and increase your metabolism. Results may take a little longer, but they will last for a longer period of time. If you do a quick fix weightloss ‘diet’ then you won’t get the results you actually want. Just don’t focus on how long it will take to get to your goals, just focus on yourself day by day and the changes will come, I promise.

Rebecca Any gym supplements that I use I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla!

I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS. 40

LETTER TO THE EDITOR KNOW YOUR RIGHTS C: REPLACING LEAD PIPES

PURPLE AND GOLD .... NEW TOWN!

Question Can we get a grant to replace lead water pipes in our house? Answer The local authorities administer a means-tested grant scheme to help low-income households with the cost of replacing lead pipes and fittings. If your income is below €50,000 a year, you may get a grant of up to 80% of the cost, up to a maximum of €4,000. If your income is between €50,001 and €75,000, you may get up to 50%, up to a maximum of €2,500. You will need to provide evidence of your household’s income when applying to the local authority for the grant. You must own the premises and live in it as your principal private residence (your main home). You must get the remedial work done before applying for the grant, and it must cost at least €200. You must have evidence of a risk of lead contamination in your home. This can either be: • A letter from your water supplier (Irish Water or a group water scheme), advising that your water system probably contains lead pipes and fittings, or • A recent certificate from an accredited laboratory, showing that the level of lead in your water supply is higher than the legal limit The contractor who does the work must give you the following: a current tax clearance certificate; itemised receipts; written confirmation that the works carried out and the materials used are of an appropriate quality and standard. You will need to enclose all these documents with your grant application. If you are an Irish Water customer and you plan to replace your lead piping, you must first apply for Irish Water’s Customer Opt-in Lead Pipe Replacement Scheme. You may be able to get some tax relief under the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme even if you get a grant to replace your lead piping – see revenue.ie.

Now that Tralee has been given purple & gold, let us look beyond our terrible footpath & street surfaces. Let,s look at what we have to offer our “New town” when the Mall & Bridge St. are finally opened for life again. Our ring roads are superb. They are very useful, simple & efficient & they have opened up some lovely views around, for us. 2 way Denny st. is starting to look very well again- many houses have been tastefully doneup(tho some gaudy signage is out of place) It is lovely to be able to drive into town again on Denny st. instead of always driving out !(if those humps, which are needed to slow traffic, are official pedestrian crossings, shouldn,t we be told ?) A lot of housing areas have been improved tremendously over the past few years by dedicated & unselfish residents committees & the Tidy Tralee groups. That has improved the quality of life for many. Our town park cannot be praised enough. We have a right to be so proud of it & so thankful to Brendan & his team. Such a wonderful place to walk in peace amongst all of that nature,s beauty. Such a fantastic surprise for our visitors. Siamsa from it,s traditional wonderful look to the international standard of activities inside. Culture/art/fun & dance/social meeting. Thankyou to Paddy O,Sullivan the architect, for surley the finest building in Tralee since the Courthouse & Ashe Hall were built. The Aquadome, also built in a fine traditional manner, the Wetland centre, tennis courts , cinema complex, sports centre, sports grounds, dog track, windmill centre are all facilities to be proud of & to be promoted & what about the fabulous views of the Slieve Mish mountains! The extended & improved walk down to canal has proved a huge success. The walk along the Lee is soon to be extended up to Ballyseedy. Ballyseedy wood is closeby & another grand facility for any appreciating fresh air & nature. Perhaps now, every single one of our family owned hotels are another feather in our caps. Even the Rose is family run. Some are owned by family owned groups. Their standards , no matter what star rating, are excellent. Do not forget our lovely little airport at Farranfore. We are blessed to have it & should support & promote it as much as we possibly can. All of this, & more, are there to support our “New Town”. Now it will take an optimistic team of business people & their staffs & landlords to give us our “New town”. However it will take business minded officials to backup & listen to that team. Support & understanding must come out of official buildings. Improvements, initiative, investment must be rewarded rather than hindered, slowed up & fined with additional overheads.Localbusiness people must be listened to & respected. It is their money they are spending or losing. Rates in town have been far too high for many years. Let us backup & support all good things to be created. “BARTHOLOMEW “ (Real name held with Editor)

It is an honour to achieve this widely acknowledged recognition and we are delighted our farm is a participant in the competition. We would like to congratulate John, Carol & Niall Mason Friday 13th October 2017

on winning this prestigious national award for quality.” Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed “Irish farming is more than just a business; it is a way of life. Irish farmers learn their craft from their parents and grandparents before them. It is no accident that Irish dairy products are regarded as the best in the world. Irish farmers and their family’s commitment to delivering world class quality milk, day in day out, coupled with our grass based farming systems has enabled us to build successful markets for dairy products around the world”. The farmers who are

nominated for the NDC & Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards are representing milk pools of hundreds or sometimes even thousands of dairy farmers in their own co-ops. It is a serious short-listing process for the three judges, Professor Pat Wall from UCD, Dr. David Gleeson (Teagasc) and Dr. Jack Kennedy (Irish Farmers Journal). This year Irish chef Clodagh McKenna was introduced as the Food Ambassador celebrating the delicious taste and quality of Irish dairy produce both at home and abroad.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! PADDY DIED IN A FIRE AND WAS BURNT PRETTY BADLY

So the morgue needed someone to identify the body. His two best friends, Seamus and Sean, were sent for. Seamus went in and the mortician pulled back the sheet. Seamus said “Yup, he’s burnt pretty bad. Roll him over”. So the mortician rolled him over. Seamus looked and said “Nope, it ain’t Paddy.” The mortician thought that was rather strange and then he brought Sean in to identify the body. Sean took a look at him and said, “Yup, he’s burnt real bad, roll him over.” The mortician rolled him over and Sean looked down and said, “No, it ain’t Paddy.”The mortician asked, “How can you tell?” Sean said, “Well, Paddy had two ar#eholes.” “What? He had two ar#eholes?” asked the mortician. “Yup, everyone knew he had two ar#eholes. Every time we went into town, folks would say, ‘Here comes Paddy with them two ar#eholes! “#

A GUY WALKS INTO A BAR AND SAYS TO THE BARMAN, “GIVE ME SIX DOUBLE VODKAS.”

The barman says, “Wow, you must have had one hell of a day.” “Yeah, I just found out my oldest son is gay.” The next day, the same guy comes into the bar and asks for six more double vodkas. When the bartender asks what’s wrong, the man says, “I just found out that my youngest son is gay, too!” On the third day, the guy comes into the bar and orders another six double vodkas. The bartender says, “Jesus! Doesn’t anybody in your family like women?” The man downs the first drink and shakes his head, “Yeah, my wife!” 46

A BLIND MAN ENTERS A BAR AND FIND HIS WAY TO A BARSTOOL.

After ordering a drink, and sitting there for a while, the blind guy yells to the bartender, “Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?” The bar immediately becomes absolutely quiet. In a husky, deep voice, the woman next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, you should know something. The bartender is blonde, the bouncer is blonde and I’m a 6’ tall, 200 pound blonde with a black belt in karate. What’s more, the fella sitting next to me is blonde and he’s a weightlifter. The woman to your right is a blonde, and she’s a pro wrestler. Think about it seriously, mister. You still wanna tell that blonde joke?” The blind guy says, “Nah, not if I’m gonna have to explain it five times.”

TWO HUNTERS ARE OUT IN THE WOODS WHEN ONE OF THEM COLLAPSES.

He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator says, “Calm down. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence. Then a gunshot is heard. “Okay, now what?”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TOUGH DAY FOR TRALEE SIDES AS HURLERS MUST DO IT AGAIN: It was a case of so near and yet so far for Kerins O’Rahillys who went down by the narrowest of margins to South Kerry in their Garvey’s County Senior Football Championship semi-final. The game ended 0-12 to 1-08 with Jack Savage getting the Tralee sides goal from the penalty spot. It was not a classic by an stretch of the imagination and the Tralee side will rue that fact that they only hit two points in the final 26 minutes. South Kerry went ahead by a point after 55 minutes 0-10 to 1-06 but points from Savage and Keane were cancelled out by Daly and Griffin to send South Kerry into the final. Rahilly’s won’t have much time to lick their wounds as they now must get ready to face Kilcummin in the relegation play-off with the loser dropping down to the Intermediate Championship next year. In what is a cruel twist of scheduling the relegation play-off will be the curtain-raiser at the County final between Dr Crokes and South Kerry. The County Minor Hurling final also led to heartbreak for the Abbeydorney/ Parnells combination as they lost out to Crotta O’Neills by just one point 1-14 to 1-13. And to make the loss even harder Crotta’s goal came in the last minute to snatch the win for the defending champions. Crotta led by four at the break and were six up at one stage. But the Parnells /Abbeydorney combination enjoyed their best period of the game to lead up to the last minute. Many of the Abbeydorney / Parnells side are eligible to play again next year where they will be in with a great chance of going one better. As is often the case big games come down to a moment of class and the County senior hurling final was no different. It looked like Ballyduff were going to take the title as they hit three unanswered points in three minutes from the 55th minute. But as it turned out these were to be their last scores. But as they say cometh the hour cometh the man and Shane Conway hit two points to narrow the gap. Then Michael Conway could have stolen the win for Lixnaw with a goal but PJ

52

O’Gorman made a great save. Then came Conway’s now legendary point from a side-line cut with 62 minutes on the clock to give everyone another opportunity to enjoy another great hours hurling. KERINS O’RAHILLY NEWS: Following on from the match report above the whole club is very disappointed with the result but proud of the squad and management for their great run. A couple of injuries probably just cost them a County Final place. It is quite bizarre that after reaching the last four of the premier competition in the county that the club now have to play a game to retain our status for next year - surely the review committee now in place will look at this anomaly for next year and ensure that a more equitable system is put in place for club sides who annually have the spectre of relegation looming over them which is incompatible with rules for divisional sides. Ladies: For most of the girls and women’s teams outdoor training is over for the year and indoor training will commence shortly. Everyone is invited to participate in the Canal Walk this Sunday, October 15th at 10am and back to the club afterwards. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 12,21,26 and 31 and the next jackpot will be e9,600. Entrants are now being picked out for the December draws. Winter activities such as cards and ballroom dancing are re starting for the winter. CAMOGIE NOTES: In the Munster Junior Club semifinal Clanmaurice play An Rinn of Waterford in An Rinn this Sunday at 1.30pm. Congratulations to Niamh Leen as a defender and Patrice Diggin in midfield who have been nominated for an All Star. The awards will be announced at a gala night in the Citywest Hotel Dublin on Saturday November 4th. Well done to Rebecca Reilly and her Munster teammates who were crowned u18 Interprovincial champions last weekend defeating Ulster in the final. Rebecca is a dual player playing rugby for Listowel as well as camogie with Causeway.

Friday 13th October 2017

There were a number of camogie players on the Finuge /St Senans team that won the Munster Junior Ladies semi-final last weekend. In the u14 A County Final Cillard defeated Causeway 1-08 to 0-02. The Kerry Camogie County Board thanks all those who help out and contributed to its bucket collection at the County Hurling final and to their recent Church Gate collection. PARNELL’S NEWS: Tralee Parnells will host their final event of 2017 with a camogie under 15/16 Invitational Blitz this Saturday morning, October 14th, at Caherslee Road. Awards: The date for the Awards Night for the Hurling and Camogie sections of the club will be announced shortly. ST PAT’S GAA: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 11,12,17 and 30 and the next jackpot of e4,400 will be drawn for in O’Dwyer’s this Sunday night. There are only two weeks left in the Academy. Sam Smith was named the Player of the Week for the u6’s. The u9’s enjoyed their trip to Na Gaeil last Sunday for a great morning’s football in warm October sunshine. The u11’s were in Annascaul for the Jim Fitzgerald Memorial Blitz. They played Annascaul/Lispole and Castlegregory. The u14’s were due to play Ardfert in the St Brendan’s Board fixture but the game did not take place. AUSTIN STACKS JUNIOR NEWS: The club fundraising cake sale takes place this Sunday morning and everyone is invited along to try out some tasty treats. Cakes and bakes can be dropped off at the club on Saturday from 6 to 8pm. The u6’s had a great morning in Churchill at the Siobhan Cotter Tournament. Churchill and Killarney Legion visit Connolly Park this Sunday at 10.30am. The older players were also at the Tournament and enjoyed their games against Churchill, Ballymac and John Mitchels. ‘Austin Stacks’, ‘Rockies’, ‘Rock St’ and ‘Black & Amber’ continue to

strive for supremacy in the Bracker O’Regan Cup competition!!! Sunday 22nd is the provisional day/date for the finals. The John Lynch U10 Football Tournament will take place in Connolly Park on Sunday October 29th. The u13’s have qualified for the final of the Kellihers Mills under 13 football Tralee Town Board championship defeating Ballymac in the Last 4. Scor: Members who are under the age of 17 on January 1st 2018 and are interested in taking part in Scor should contact the club as they will be taking part in the Tralee Area Scor na nOg competitions in the new year. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner from the Lotto numbers drawn 8,10, 11 and 18 with the next jackpot being e1800 in the Halfway Bar. The club thanks all those who supported and helped out with the annual Golf Classic. The club received great support from local businesses and supporters and over 40 teams teed-off. The Freeman Electrical team came out the winners on 95 points. The u16’s put up a great display in the final of the Town League before going down to Churchill 2-13 to 1-08. The management and squad put in a great effort all year. The u13’s were defeated by Austin Stacks in their Town Championship semi-final losing out 4-10 to 3-07. The u10’s took part in the Annual u10 Castleisland District Blitz with 18 players taking part on the day. They played Cordal and Knocknagoshel going down to the former in the A final. Players from the u7’s to the u10’s were involved in the Siobhan Cotter Blitz in Churchill and they all enjoyed a great day out in a very well organised Blitz. The host club Churchill were the overall winners of the Blitz and we would like to thank them for hosting the event. The final Academy session for all the ages for this year takes place this Sunday. TRALEE DYNAMOS SCHOOLBOYS Academy: Please note that the club’s Academy will move to the new venue of the IT College North Campus from this Friday Oct 13th starting at 6pm. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Sean Horan, Sean Dillane and Washington Solomon continue to make great progress with the ETP Kerry County Squad over recent weeks. Rian one step away from the Euros: Tralee Dynamos led the congratulations of everybody involved in soccer in Kerry for Rian O’Sullivan and his u19 teammates on reaching the Elite qualifying phase of the Euros. Their qualifier took place in Waterford this week. ST BRENDAN’S PARK CLUB NOTES: St Brendan’s Park Fc are excited to announce that we are looking to start up a GIRLS U12 team for the coming 2017/18 season. Girls born in 2007 2006 would be eligible to play in this age group. As we are a volunteer run club we would ask the parents of players to be heavily involved with a least one female coach. If you are willing to get involved or have a child that meets the requirements please feel free to contact us at www.info@ stbrendanspark.com with your questions and we will get back to you asap. In the Munster Youths Cup the boys defeated Listowel Celtic 3-1 while in the Denny u17 League the club defeated Mastergeeha. In the VITHIT League both u13’s sides just lost out but the 15 Premier side were winners away at Inter Kenmare. The 15B side lost out in a 7 goal thriller to Dingle Bay. The club wishes its 12’s and 16’s sides the best of luck in this weekend’s National Cup. CRACKING 0-0 DRAW FOR THE 15’S: The Kerry 15’s League of Ireland side were involved in one of those thrilling 0-0 draws against Limerick at Mounthawk Park. Both sides play some very good football with Kerry creating most of the best chances. However the Limerick keeper was in inspired form and both sides had to be happy with the point. Kerry are away to Wexford in Ferrycarrig Park this Sunday and will finish their campaign at home to Cork City the following weekend. Inter League teams: The Kerry 15’s and 16’s squads for the up-coming Inter League campaigns have been named while the trials for the other age groups and the Girls at 12’s, 14’s and 16’s will take place over the coming weeks. MUNSTER CLASH: The big soccer game this weekend from a town point of view sees Tralee Dynamos face Tralee Celtic in the Munster Junior Cup 1st Round. The game is at 11.30am on Sunday in Cahermoneen. A WIN IS A WIN AT THE

END OF THE SEASON: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 73 Moycullen 70: When the League table is read at the end of the year all that will be on it is wins and losses and for Garvey’s this will be another in the win column. It won’t really tell the story of the game that kept the huge crowd at the Sports Complex on their feet. Moycullen, who were making their debut at this level in the Tralee put themselves into a position to win inside the last minute but Trae Pemberton and Warriors captain Darren O’Sullivan had other ideas. Moycullen started well and were 14-6 up early on but the home side turned it around by the end of the first ten minutes and were 20-17 ahead at the end of the first quarter. The home side enjoyed a very strong second quarter and by half time led 39-27. However the second half began with the Galway side taking control and the 12 point gap was soon down to just 1. However Garvey’s experience saw them get back on track but there was only two points between the sides at the end of the third quarter. And so the result was in the balance right up to those last 6 seconds. Nihill put Warriors ahead with two from the free throw line. But then Pemberton made a remarkable basket and then managed to find O’Sullivan with a no luck pass and he drained a three pointer, much to the delight of the vast majority of those in the Complex. Pemberton was the top scorer for the Warriors hitting 16 points followed by Dusan Bogdanovic on 13 and Eoin Quigley hit 11. Brandon McGuire was Moycullen’s top scorer on 19. Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is the visit DCU Saints to the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night next. Tip off as usual is 8pm. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB NOTES: In the Ladies League Division 2 St Brendan’s defeated St Anne’s 58-41. The Ladies got off to a great start and were 11-6 up at the end of the first quarter. The Tralee side upped the intensity in the second period and they led by 7 at the break 26-19. And in the third quarter St Brendan’s pulled ahead and took control leading 42-25 and ran out easy enough winners 58-41 in the end. St. Brendan’s: Claire O’Sullivan 17, Katie Costello 15, Róisín O’Shea 6, Laura Griffin 4, Katelyn O’Sullivan 6, Siadbh Fleming 2, Sharon Reidy 2, Karen McMahon 2, Maura O’Leary 2, Leslie O Callaghan 2 Ethel Meehan In the Lee Strand U16 Boys Division 1 St Brendan’s defeated Rathmore Ravens 51-47 while in Lee Stand u14 Boys Division 3 it finished St Brendan’s 30-29 St Coleman’s. In the Lee Strand U12 Boys St Mary’s defeated St Brendan’s 34-17. There is a wide range of games

TRALEE BAY SWIMMING CLUB NEWS: Frank Ryan has topped the World Series / Swimmer of the Year table with 25 points. It was a very tight competition with only 6 points separating the top 7. Dominic Rollo-Walker finished a point behind the winner in second. Bridget Moore took third place on 21 points while Cathy Fisher missed out on a top three place by just one point. Tom Brosnan, Gerard Pierse and Catriona Chester all finished on 19 points. The Gerald Walsh Swim, which was Round 8 of the Swimmer of the Year, saw Ed Murphy winning Group A from Maura Hayes with Cathy Fisher. The top 3 in Group B were Frank Ryan, Mairead Fox and Clare Neenan. Group C was won by Bridget Moore with Brendan Walsh second and Susan Cantwell third. The Winter Swimming Turkey series gets underway this Sunday at 11am. Numbers are looking like being up around 60 with everybody paying e2 to enter into the draw for lots of Christmas goodies later on. Liam Dowling also has Coolavanny Pet in the semi-final of the Sporting Press Micro Dog ID Oaks (e25,000) this Saturday night. Silent Wonder the star in Glin: In the Oaks Trial Silent Wonder took the honours in an all Kerry final where she saw off another Kerry dog Homestead Model. Silent Wonder now enters the Oaks market at 8/1. The Derby ticket went much further afield as Newry dog Needham Rocket made the trip to West Limerick worthwhile. In the Desmond Cup Portane Ash made a late burst to take the honours while Bexhill Anna took the All Age Bitch Stake and the Glin Derby was won by Tubbermartin Blue. This weekend the action turns to Ballyheigue where the Regional / Tradaree meeting gets underway today Friday. ST BRENDAN’S / OAKPARK Friday 13th October 2017

COMMUNITY GAMES AGM: St. Brendan’s/Oakpark Community Games area AGM will take place Monday October 16th at 8.30pm in Na Gaeil Clubhouse. It is very important that anyone who is interested in their child competing in community games activities next year should attend. We need to appoint a new committee and need new members, if we fail to do so we cannot partake in activities next year. Community games cover a range of sports, art and cultural events and are a wonderful opportunity for children to try out a new activity and make new friends. NO PUNT BY POTTS ON COOPER: Anyone who knows Bryan Cooper knows that he was not going to stay down for long after being relieved of his duties as Gigginstown (Michael O’Leary’s operation) retained rider. He has been winning races throughout the summer including two wins on Crocodile Dundee for his father Tom. This week he did ride a winner for O’Leary in Galway on Tuesday before flying to England where he is now the first choice rider for high profile owner Alan Potts. One of his first big rides will be this Saturday on Finian’s Oscar trained by Colin Tizzard. Thankfully Cooper has fully recovered from injury and it looks like he could have a very exciting National Hunt season across the water and ant home when possible. On the Green’s: Castleisland – In the Seniors 12 Hole Singles the winner was Patsy Sweeney on 26 points followed by Cyril Quigley on 25 points and Mike Moloney in third place on 21 points. On Sunday in the Dennehy Car Sales Killorglin Exchange Day Kevin McNamara took the win on 40 points from Declan Murphy who finished on the same points with Patsy Lane third. Tralee Golf Club: In Round 7 of the Fourball/Foursome the winners were Adrian O’Gara and Edward Morrison on 46 points. Fergus Kelly and Michael Galvin took second with Sean Carmody and Danny Leen third. After the 7 Rounds Richard Rafferty leads the way with 40 Master Classic points followed by Gerard O’Sullivan and Michael Leahy. In the Ladies Section on Wednesday Gorretti O’Connor was the winner from Mary Murphy. On Sunday in the Master Classic 12 sponsored by O’Donnells Vera Tierney took the spoils from Margaret O’Donoghue with Mags Hayes taking the Best Gross with 26 points.
