LETTER TO THE EDITOR... OUR NEW TOWN CENTRE OPENS UP AT THE END OF THE MONTH It will be like a super new shopwindow for the whole town.It will

be possible to windowshop & chat in peace, without vehicles after 10.30 in the morning & right up to 6 in the evenings So, do all shops open at 9 & expect a bonanza of trade ? No way ! Shoppers have moved away & not just from the town centre. They have moved to where it was more convenient to park & shop, they have changed their habits. They got tired of closed streets & diggers To attract them & more, back to do business with us, there must be activity. To get people back on the streets, there must be activity. There was a very good busker in the mall a couple of weeks ago. Despite the diggers people gathered around happily, so how about a busker competition 2 or 3 times a year.? When CH chemists were promoting their christmas parade outside, the same happened. People stopped rushing about, stopped & watched & chatted. Ch did not stop having wonderful events in the terrible trading months & for each event they attracted hundreds to town, to trade not just with them & they put bodies on the streets. But it must not be just left to CH. All must get together & put on activities that will attract people to our streets. The new pedestrian way is absolutely ideal for december christmas carols(shops must turn off their music when there is singing & music outside)- it is not too late to organise prizes for the most entertaining, best youth, best choir, best group etc & we must support them generously & happily. Wow us all with dazzling christmas window displays(look at hilsers jewellers in castle st, John Ross, The Grand Hotel Walsh Bros shoes ). It is not too late to organise prizes for the best, best at minimum cost, most imaginative etc. We have a music stand in the square that was meant to bring activity- did someone forget it was there ?! We have our courthouse steps, crying out for entertaining groups when no court on. Think “outside the box” folks- show us that ye have imaginations- wake up offices, paintup, cleanup, tidyup !(look at your 2nd. Storey & see does it need paint) When we come in do not give us a grunted “are ya o.K” if we were o.K we would not be coming into you. Give us a smile. All working in town park in carparks & give our street parking back to customers. Look at the streets full of cars at 9- they are not customers- if ye do not park in carparks & walk ye do not deserve our business. Authorities consider quarterly parking tickets for the far end of the brandon carpark at 2 or 3 euro per day & make a similar deal in dennys, when open. Customers, support those who are making an effort. Businesses, show us you appreciate our trade. “smile tralee” & “lets go” ! Yours Sincerely

Tickets: €16/12 Family of 4: €55

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... LISTOWEL FOOD FAIR LEAVES VISITORS WITH GREAT TASTE Thousands of locals and visitors enjoyed a flavoursome time in Listowel at the weekend at a range of events hosted during the Listowel Food Fair. The 23rd festival was officially opened on Thursday evening by 2017 Rose of Tralee, Jennifer Byrne. Local café owner and Flogas Ambassador, Lizzy Lyons from Lizzy’s Little Kitchen, took to the demo stage with actor and TV presenter, Simon Delaney. Lizzy invited Simon to join her to cook recipes from his recently published cookbook, Simply Simon’s: The Diner’s Cookbook, when she was doing her monthly cookery slot on TV3’s Sunday AM recently. The actor, who has appeared in TV hit show, the Good Wife, was blown away by the hospitality and warmth shown to him during his time in the Kerry town. The duo cooked up a storm for VIP guests Jennifer Byrne and John O Connor who is the nutritionist for the Kerry hurling team. However, it was Caitriona Murphy from Knocknagashel who stole the

show. The 10 year old delivered a personally written tribute to the 2017 Rose Of Tralee with an air of undisputed confidence leaving the audience of over 200 guests in no doubt that the 5th year pupil at Gaelsoil Aogain in Castleisland is a Rose of Tralee in the making. Most events during the 5 day festival, which saw leading food writer Georgina Campbell announced as the recipient of the Listowel Food Fair Lifetime Achievement Award, were sold out. The diners at the awards ceremony on Friday night in the Listowel Arms Hotel had their tastebuds tantalised by the mouthwatering 9 course tasting menu created by chef Mary Julian using winning products in the Best Emerging Artisan Product Competition and Kerrygold Cheese

Competition. Hungarian Ildiko Farago who moved to Listowel in 2006 received the Local Food Hero award. She founded Wellness Baking in 2011 and has won numerous awards for her range of gluten free products. Jimmy Deenihan, chair of the organising committee, said he would like to extend his deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to

the overwhelming success of the festival including the hardworking and dedicated committee, local businesses, sponsors, in particular official festival partner, Garvey’s Supervalu, and the public who supported the event.

TRALEE ADVERTISER

The Craft Centre houses a gift shop and gallery for this run and the project hopes to pop up again in Tralee next summer. In summertime they will reintroduce their craft skills workshop programme but right now the Centre is focussed on gifting for Christmas. It remains one of very few spaces in the Town where the public can access high quality Irish hand crafted gifts and artworks from County Kerry. Craft Makers promotes a Make, Learn, Buy philosophy “We are really looking forward to being back and hope we will have something for everyone and for all purses...we love Christmas time at Craft Makers as gift giving comes into its own and we personally wrap all our gifts and make sure our customer knows how where each piece is made and Friday 24 November 2017 th

SHOP who makes it”, stated Deirdre Enright.

in Kerry and this support directly transfers into the local economy. They are also promising a hot drink or two to warm cold hands on these winter days. See www. craftmakers.ie

The Centre is well worth a visit as it highlights the very vast range of craft making in Kerry today. Supporting the centre ensures support for the craft and design OPEN 24thindustry November

INSPIRED.”A CHRISTMAS HUG” Bottler himself. I received two messages from Brendan Grace last week wishing me all the best with it. He loved it. We need to get it played and shared and get it into the archives of popular Christmas songs. Special thanks to the lovely Helena Brosnan ( Sweet F A) who agreed to pose for the cover with her Mayo man, Niall Donnellon. We will be having a launch this Friday (today Nov 24th ) between 6 and 8 pm at the Rose Hotel. John and I will be there along with Inspired Tralee . Cds will be on sale by “Inspired” @ only 5 euro. So please do come down and support us. The Hotel has very kindly supported us and mulled wine , tea.coffee and a bit of fingerfood will be available. We are very appreciative to them.“

Local artists Pat Pierse and John Buggy wrote this song,”A Christmas Hug” . It’s one of those songs that will make you smile. As you are well aware many people today have serious mental stresses as a result of financial problems and issues closer to home. The “Inspired “group in Tralee deserve a lot of credit for what they have as accomplished these past three years. John and Pat are delighted to be able to support them with the proceeds of this song. Says Pat “ I sent the song to numerous radio stations hoping to get it aired. I do hope our own local radio well give it a plug. It’s a country Christmas song and I must say that so far everyone that has listened to it love it. I emailed it to Brendan Grace Promotional Manager who kindly forwarded it on to

THE (GOLF) DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW… Having been the go-to-guy for all things golf-related in the Kingdom for over a decade, Tralee’s own James O’Dowd is bringing all of his insights, tips and experience to his new venture ‘The Golf Doc’ which opened its doors for the first time last weekend . Situated just outside Tralee in Ballinorig West, this new facility was specially designed by James himself to allow golfers from right across the region unlock their game. Whether they’re complete novices or playing off scratch, James and his team will take a deeply personal approach to each player and bring them to the next stage in their passion for the sport. James O Dowd said “I wanted to offer golfers a state of the art facility right here in Munster. It has been a dream of mine for many years to develop a purpose built golf academy and help our game grow across all ages….and to see it become a reality with 20

Dick Spring who opened the facility officially said “I am delighted to support James in this project, I have been an avid golfer for many years and am excited that our game can become more accessible through The Golf Doc Academy. I have no doubt that this will be the first of many for The Golf Doc”. With a wry smile and a reflection on what might have been for Irish rugby and football, he added “this is probably the best thing Friday 24th November 2017

While we may be heading into another dark and damp winter James isn’t deterred. “The facilities here have been designed so that we can operate in all conditions. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... NATIONAL TRIATHLON AWARD FOR “INSPIRATIONAL” TRALEE WOMAN VICKY. A Tralee girl, who has defied all the odds, to complete a triathlon, has been honoured for her achievement with the Spirit of Triathlon award from Triathlon Ireland. 34-year old Vicky McCarthy from Manor will never forget the joy of crossing the finish line when she completed her first ever triathlon in Fenit in 2013 - a feat she thought she would never complete. She had been diagnosed with her first brain tumour at the age of 10 which had to be urgently removed by surgery. Two years later the tumour regrew and she had to have open head surgery in her early teens. This was closely followed by a battle with meningitis. In 2002 after sitting her Leaving Cert, she had a third tumour removed in yet another serious surgery and a year later she has the tumour removed with laser surgery. Although she has now been completely clear for over 15 years the surgeries have left her suffering fatigue and dependent on medication to regulate her glands and control her hormones, her temperature, her food and water intakes, sleep patterns and her emotional behaviour and memory. Yet despite this health battle Vicky was determined to follow in her sister, Leanne’s footsteps and complete her own triathlon.

Leanne joined Tralee Triathlon club in 2009 and Vicky became her number one supporter on the sidelines during races. She remains one of the club’s biggest supporters and she is at every race to support the participants. “I never thought I would do it myself,” she said. However in 2011 she convinced her Dad, Dan, to compete in a triathlon in Fenit with her. Vicky completed the swim leg and her father the bike and the run. She was bitten by the bug and determined that one day she would complete her own triathlon and that dream came through in 2013 when she did the Try-a-Tri at Tri Kingdom Come in Fenit. “I’m not going to win but I really enjoy taking part. There is nothing like crossing that finish line.” “It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to do it. It doesn’t matter if you are last. Don’t give up. Triathlon has changed my life.” Since her first ever triathlon she has completed many Try-a-Tri events including the annual Tri Kingdom Come in Fenit and local 5km races, encouraging many of her friends and new athletes to take part. Her motto is if she can do it anyone can.

Her sister, Leanne, nominated her for the Spirit of Triathlon Award in this year’s National Triathlon Ireland Awards, as Vicky embodies everything that is special about the sport. “She reminds us to enjoy the experience of triathlons and inspires many to push their limits to achieve their goals. She is always around on our home training ground at Fenit throughout the summer to accompany new swimmers in the water and help set up transition areas for club events giving advice and tips. She can be seen at any event, holding up signs to get a smile and encourage athletes. Most recently, she travelled to IM Barcelona with the club and held a sign throughout the 15hr day, saying ‘I trained to hold this sign’ and ‘hurry up, my arms hurt’,” says Leanne.

deserving than Vicky of this award. “She is a true club member always on hand to help out and support others. Her story is truly is inspirational and shows that everyone can do a triathlon if they put their mind to it.” Club members, Majella Diskin, Paudie Murphy and Ciara Tierney, were also honoured at the Triathlon Ireland National Awards for their superb performances this year taking gold, silver and bronze in their respective age groups. For more details contact Vicky on 0876951300 or contact PRO Sinead Kelleher on 0879303061

“I think my sister is the true epitome of this award. I may be a little biased but she is deserving of this award.” On Saturday night at a Gala dinner in the Gibson Hotel in Dublin, the Tralee woman, was announced as the winner of the Spirit of Triathlon Award which was presented by An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar. “I was estactic. I had no idea that I had won it,” said Vicky. Club chairman, Francis Foley, said that that no-body is more 22

This weekend, Margaret Flynn will be celebrating her glorious return to RTE, having worked “manys a weekend” on the Winning Streak show while at the National Lottery. Originally from Castleisland, , Margaret is now living in Kimmage in Dublin and she began working with the National Lottery since its inception in 1987 from day one. Fondly remembered by all her former colleagues, Margaret is sure to be a colourful character on Saturday’s show. She got three stars on all three of them and once she posted them she said that she “just knew that I’d be on the show”!! Margaret has two brothers, Florence and Tom who will be going with her to support her on the show along with a host of other family and friends. Watching on the RTE Player, from Canada, will be her sister Beatrice. Margaret hopes to win enough for a new car saying that her current car “Molly”, a ’98 Nissan Micra, is nearing retirement!

1. Start by deciding how many you are cooking for and what will the dishes on the day be. 2. Write your dishes down with notes about ingredients and recipes. 3. By now you should be pre-booking your turkey and ham ,goose or duck. 4. Start buying frozen and canned goods now. 5. With the introduction of Salin® Plus Air Purifier those who suffer respiratory problems can benefit from salt therapy in the comfort of their own home. The Salin® Plus Air Purifier is a small device about the size of a kettle that you plug in each night and leave it on while you sleep. Since this salt therapy has been available many people have used it successfully to help their respiratory problems including Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, Rhinitis (hay fever), Allergies, Snoring and Sleep Apnoea. O'Donoghues Pharmacy in Tralee was established in 1952. Their staff offer Salin® Plus natural Salt air purifier to their customers for respiratory issues. My own experience since starting to offer the Salin® Plus air purifier is that it works for people with all kinds of respiratory conditions and for all age groups. Our staff can discuss this natural treatment with our customers”.

How Salin Plus Works For best results it is recommended that you should change the filter of the Salin® Plus Air Purifier every 4-6 months. It depends on how much the machine is used, but if it is every night you should change the filter approximately every 4 months. Keep a note of the date you change the filter.

Are you tired of sore gums, ill fitting dentures and messy denture adhesive? Would you love to smile and eat with confidence?

Teeth in a Day (All on 4) is a proven, revolutionary dental treatment for a patient that is missing all their natural teeth and who is tired of wearing an ill fitting and often sore denture. While there are many options available to people who struggle with an ill-fitting denture, our ‘Teeth in a Day’ (Implant Supported Bridges) offer you the chance to throw your denture away for good and feel the benefits of never having to worry about a denture again. They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’

Restore your smile, your chewing ability and your confidence in just one day. Missing teeth causes bone loss. Significant bone loss can shrink the contours of the jaw bone, causing wrinkled lips and a sunken mouth and chin. This solution stimulates bone maintenance, restores chewing function, and gets rid of the uncomfortable and painful feeling of wearing dentures.

Teeth in a Day

Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Inventor of the Dental Implant.

How it works

At your free consultation, we’ll take the time to listen to you, address your concerns and questions and fully explain the procedure and the options available to you. If you decide to proceed, a full clinical examination will be carried out by Dr. Colm O’Loghlen including X rays and 3D CT scanning. We are one of only a few clinics in Ireland with a CT scanner on site. This minimises patient inconvenience and allows for the most advanced analysis of your teeth and needs. The full implant procedure is carried out in one day. The implants are placed in the morning and you leave that afternoon with fully fixed teeth having thrown your denture in the bin!

Nervous?

If you’re nervous, no problem, the procedure is pain free, and some of our patients elect to have a IV sedation or a mild oral sedative to complete the treatment.

Testimonials “I am so happy. Colm really has changed my life” “I had sedation – the time did fly! I had 4 implants in my upper jaw. I didn’t feel them going in, and it didn’t hurt at all” “My enjoyment of food – the flavour and the texture is just so much better”

So I’ve been told by a little birdie that Clarins in CH has 15% off everything AND there are some AMAZING gift sets in store. Blank Canvas, one of my favourite brush brands, has 30% off EVERYTHING! Black Friday Weekend is such a good time to start Christmas Shopping as so many places have such good deals! Now onto the announcement… For the last few weeks I have been working on something, if you follow me on Instagram you might know a little about this, As you all know, one of my main things is that I want to be 100% authentic and genuine. I’m not a walking advertisement for anyone and I really do talk only about products I enjoy! I’m passionate about what I do and I love passing on my knowledge. So when Orlagh Winters contacted me about organising an event, I nearly died! We met up and talked all things events and masterclasses, about what I wanted, how it will work etc. I did a poll on my Instagram story and so many of you said you’d attend.

January 6th in Benners Hotel Tralee from 5-8pm. It will be an evening covering all of my favourite things, beauty, makeup, nails and much more! I will be doing a full skincare and makeup demo using only products that I use on myself and clients and recommend! There will be a Q&A where you can ask aboslutely anything - I want the evening to be as interactive as possible. I’ll have one or two guest speakers. There will be amazing spot prizes on the night as well as Prosecco and Canapes. It’s Women’s Christmas with a difference! Here’s the details… The event will be taking place in Benners Hotel Tralee on Saturday 6th of January from 5-8pm. Tickets will be 25 euro available only from Benners Hotel. There’s limited availability so it’s recommended to act fast. Grab your group of gals and treat yourselves to a fab Women’s Christmas Event! If you’ve any questions at all email me at rebeccashorttevents@hotmail.com

Beautiful Favourites will be on Saturday I hope you all have an amazing week!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! I know every week I talk about how it’s great to be fit and healthy with regards to your physical body... And it is, in a perfect world. But this week I’m going to focus on another aspect of your health that it’s important to take care of, your mental health and being happy in yourself. Especially at this time of year, there is huge focus on looking your best as we’re coming into the Festive Season, with so many Christmas Parties and things coming up it can be stressful! The next time you find yourself scrutinising something that you think is “wrong” with your body. Maybe focus on the person and soul inside your body, other than asthetics. Being a size 6 or 16 doesn’t determine who you are as a person and how healthy you are. Like everyone, I’m not happy 24/7. I have struggled with body issues, image issues and everything in between. I have finished school only to come out of two separate college courses, because I wasn’t happy in either of them. It took a lot to get to where I am now. Stay positive, a positive mindset always helps. When you are stuck in something in life that makes you that unhappy, be it a job, living situation, college course, or relationship, it is always best to take a step back and put you and your mental health first. Because if you don’t, trust me, nobody else is going to do it for you. Talk about it. It doesn’t matter to who, just let someone else know how you’re feeling. You never know they might have the perfect solution, or at least they might make you feel a bit better. Exercise, even if it’s just going for a walk. It helps clear your head and overall you’ll feel

better. If you are upset about anything, don’t try hide it or play it down because of someone else’s opinions. It’s your life and if something is upsetting you, it’s ok to be upset. Once you know ways in which you can cheer yourself up again. For any of you out there feeling overwhelmed because you don’t know what to do with your life or you can’t pick a college course or you’re confused as to what to do by a situation, remember, no one has all the answers. Not even the most intelligent successful person you know. Everyone just takes it one day at a time. So don’t feel anxious or pressured into doing anything if you feel it’s not for you. It’s your life, make a conscious decision to be the happiest, most positive person you can be. Try not to sweat the small stuff! Life is too short to have a miserable time at the Christmas party because you’re ‘being good’ or ‘watching your calories’. It’s all about balance, you can count calories and ‘be good’ on a night in! And, if you’re looking for a little bit of help to get fit and healthy, The Brandon Hotel Gym have an INSANE Black Friday Offer!! This weekend, if you renew your membership or get a new 3,6 or 12 month one, you get the rest of 2017 for free! So for example, if you get a 3 month membership, you won’t have to renew it until APRIL! Insane!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HOME RENOVATION INCENTIVE Question I am planning to extend my home. How can I claim the Home Renovation Incentive?

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

DJ EIBHLIN AND MARK PLAY ABBEY GIG ON ST STEPHEN’S NIGHT

Tralee dj eibhlin returns after her sell out show last year to join the massive line up at the abbey inn st Stephens night , Janus 2.0 , a 20 year anniversary party , eibhlin has been super busy in the last 12 months playing at Love box Festival, V festival, Ibiza Cafe Del Mar and Ocean Beach, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Rish DJ legend Mark Kavanagh also working on a New EP, Janus 2.0 more to follow !!!!!

Answer The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme enables homeowners or landlords to claim tax relief on repairs, renovations or improvement work that is carried out on their main home or rental property by tax-compliant contractors and that is subject to 13.5% VAT. It is also available to local authority tenants who have written consent from the local authority to carry out the works. HRI is paid as a tax credit at 13.5% of qualifying expenditure, which can be set against your income tax over 2 years. You must be paying income tax to avail of HRI. You must also be up to date with your Local Property Tax (LPT) obligations. Your contractor must be registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) in Ireland and be tax compliant. They also have to register the work on the HRI online administration system. If you use several contractors, such as a builder, a plumber and an electrician, you can combine the cost of the works to make up the minimum qualifying expenditure of €5,000 excluding VAT at 13.5%. Repair, renovation or improvement work subject to VAT at 13.5% all qualify for the HRI, including extensions and attic conversions; supply and fitting of kitchens, bathrooms and built-in wardrobes; fitting of windows; plumbing, tiling, rewiring and plastering. Work subject to VAT at 23% is not covered. Neither are items such as furniture, white goods or carpets. The work must be done and paid for by 31 December 2018. In general, the credit is paid over the 2 years following the year in which the work is done and paid for. After work starts you should log in to HRI online to check that your contractor(s) have entered details of the work – if they have not, you will not be able to claim the credit. Once the work has been completed, you can claim the HRI credit. You access the HRI online system through Revenue’s myAccount service or through the Revenue Online Service (ROS) if you are registered for ROS. There is detailed information about HRI on revenue.ie.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A BUSDRIVER AND A PRIEST HAVE A CONVERSATION...

The priest complains: “Every time i start preaching, people stop praying and fall asleep.” The busdriver replies: “For me it’s the other way around. When i shift into 5th gear and hit the pedal, they wake up and start praying.

WHO SAYS MEN DON’T REMEMBER?

A couple were holiday shopping at the mall, and the place was packed. As the wife walked through the mall, she was surprised to look up and see her husband was nowhere around. She was quite upset because they had a lot to do and hence, she became worried that she called him on her mobile phone to ask him where he was. In a quiet voice he said: “Honey, do you remember the jewelry store we went into about 5 years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we could not afford and I told you that I would get it for you one day?” The wife choked up and started to cry and said, “Yes, I remember that jewelry store.” He replied: “Well, I’m in the pub next door!”

AN OLD LADY OFFERS THE BUS DRIVER SOME PEANUTS…

An old lady offers the bus driver some peanuts…so the driver happily munches them. Every 5 minutes she gives him a handful more peanuts.. Driver: Why don’t you eat them yourself? Old lady: I can’t chew. Look, I have no teeth.. Driver: Then why do you buy them? Old lady: Oh, I just love the chocolates around them!

The desk clerk says, “I’m sorry sir, but that’s a personal matter.” The man replies, “Listen you idiot. The window won’t open and that’s a maintenance matter.”

A MAN FLYING IN A HOT AIR BALLOON SUDDENLY REALIZES HE’S LOST.

He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts to get directions, “Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?” The man below says: “Yes. You’re in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field.” “You must work in Information Technology,” says the balloonist. “I do” replies the man. “How did you know?” “Well,” says the balloonist, “everything you have told me is technically correct, but It’s of no use to anyone.” The man below replies, “You must work in management.” “I do,” replies the balloonist, “But how’d you know?” “Well”, says the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help. You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault.”

WIFE TEXTS HUSBAND ON A COLD WINTER MORNING: “WINDOWS FROZEN, WON’T OPEN.”

Husband texts back: “Gently pour some lukewarm water over it and then gently tap edges with hammer.” Wife texts back 10 minutes later: “Computer really messed up now.”

SINCE IT STARTED SNOWING, ALL MY GRANDMA HAS DONE IS STARE THROUGH THE WINDOW. If it gets any worse ill need to let her back in.

A HOTEL GUEST CALLS THE FRONT DESK

and the clerk answers, “May I help you?” The man says, “Yes, I’m in room 858. You need to send someone to my room immediately. I’m having an argument with my wife and she says she’s going to jump out the window.”

TORQUING CARS! BENTLEY’S FINEST: 1929 ‘BLOWER’ FOR SALE AT AUCTION

Relive the hedonistic days of the socialite “Bentley Boys” of the Twenties with this replica of the cars that helped establish Bentley as a major producer of luxury sports cars by winning the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1928 and 1929. Bentley first won Le Mans in 1924 - and then triumphed again every year between 1927 and 1930.This example of the famed “Blower” Bentley, so called because of the distinctive Roots-type supercharger mounted in front of the imposing grille, is being sold at auction on November 25 and is estimated to sell for £750,000 to £875,000. The road-going “Blower” was first shown at the Motor Exhibition at Olympia, London, in October 1929. It had been developed as a private venture by “Bentley Boy” Sir Henry Birkin to extract greater performance from the proven 4½-litre model, which was becoming outclassed by its rivals on the racetracks of Europe. His aim was to produce a British car that would enable British drivers to continue to win races as spectacularly as the 4½-litre that had won the 1928 Le Mans 24 Hours.Only 50 production supercharged 4½-litre Bentleys were built to support the homologation of five Birkin team cars: among the few cars of their day capable of 100mph on the open road, they have always been regarded as the supercars of their era. Motor Sport magazine wrote of the Blower’s “remarkable acceleration” and called it “a car for the connoisseur of sporting cars”.Only 50 production supercharged 4½-litre Bentleys were built to support the homologation of five Birkin team cars: among the few cars of their day capable of 100mph on the open road, they have always been regarded as the supercars of their era. BIG NAMES TOPPING IMPORT LIST HAVING IMPACT ON ‘IRISH-CAR’ VALUES

We hear so much about the surge in secondhand imports it is easy to overlook the sheer volume of specific models being bought - and the impact that is having on ‘Irish-car’ values. The downwards pressure on prices means everyone’s car is hit by lower values. The top used import is the Ford Focus with a massive 5,300+ brought in this year. It’s followed by the Volkswagen Golf (around 4,800). Both are miles ahead of the Volkswagen Passat, Audi A4 and Nissan Qashqai, bunched together at just under 2,500 each. It’s a hell of a lot of cars. Three mid-size executives feature among the remainder of the Top 10 (courtesy of SIMI data). They include the BMW 5 Series (nearly 2,000), Audi A6 (around 1,900) and Mercedes E-Class (heading for 1,700). The Hyundai i30 (approx 2,000) and Vauxhall/Opel Insignia (around 1,700) complete the picture. It is generally reckoned we’ll bring in more than 90,000 this year in total - up substantially on the 72,000 for all of 2016. (indo motoring)

MOTORING SNIPPETS

They are making only 1,499 of a special 1499 GT Mini for the UK and Irish market. The special edition (pictured), including John Cooper Works styling and special graphics, pays homage to one of the classic Minis, the 1275 GT. * For the record: The EU is proposing a 30pc cut in CO2 emissions from cars and vans by 2030. That is a 30pc drop on those for 2021. So the fleet average of 95g/km for 2021 will have to go to 66g/km. You get my drift? We’re talking major surgery. Some people feel it’s not enough and that German political might prevailed for softer treatment. Others feel it will hit us all hard in the pocket because diesel and petrol will be hammered in favour of far more electric vehicles being developed. The thing is 2030 isn’t that far off when you factor in planning and development time to make radically cleaner cars. * The Volkswagen Beetle is set to go electric and rear-wheel drive, reports say. * Uber flying taxi cars will take to the skies in 2020, the firm says. It claims an airborne service will be cheaper and safer than a standard car. They’ve obviously studied Irish driving habits. Some people drive like they are airborne. * Opel is planning a new SUV for 2019 with seven seats. There will be a plug-in hybrid too. * Honda’s Brexit warning could not be clearer. It says it could not absorb a 10pc tariff that could be imposed on UK-built cars if Britain switches to World Trade Organisation rules post-Brexit.

LITTLE ANNA MAKES HER (BOOK)MARK! A YOUNG Tralee schoolgirl who wanted to add a little joy to those suffering from cancer has melted the hearts of a local charity with a selfless donation. Nine-year-old Anna Chute from The Spa made a selection of hand-made bookmarks and donated them to Recovery Haven Kerry, along with €20 of her own money. The Spa National School pupil had intended selling the bookmarks at the County Library to raise funds for the charity, but when this wasn’t possible she offered them to clients of Recovery Haven instead, hoping her creations would shine a little light on their challenging journey. “I was hoping that some people at Recovery Haven might like them and they might cheer them up,” said Anna, who has written a message of encouragement on each one. “I love reading and it 52

makes me very happy.” Anna explained that she and a friend had sold similar bookmarks for the Donal Walsh Live Life fund last year and this year chose Recovery Haven as her charity of choice. While selling them at the library was not an option in the end, she did receive a €10 donation from the county librarian towards her cause – and put €20 of her own communion money with it. “Unfortunately, the county librarian was not in a position to allow me to sell my bookmark at the library but he very kindly sent me €10 to donate to Recovery Haven. I have also given €20 which Recovery Haven might be able to put towards buying some books for people to read.” To say thanks to Anna for her amazing gesture, management at Recovery Haven invited the schoolgirl to the cancer support house in Friday 24th November 2017

Tralee on Wednesday to see for herself where her donation – and bookmarks – would go. Recovery Haven’s PR & Marketing Officer, Marisa Reidy, said that Anna’s wonderful gesture really touched everyone at the charity, adding that her donation is just as important as any donation they receive. The fact that it came out of her own pocket, makes it all the more special. “When we received Anna’s letter and bookmarks, we immediately invited her along to see what we do and show her that every euro we receive is put to great use to help and support cancer sufferers and their families across the county. She’s an amazing little girl and we are very grateful for her support.”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CLANMAURICE MAKE CAMOGIE HISTORY: It is not often that camogie is the top story in this column but when one of our clubs makes it to an All -Ireland they deserve the headlines. Clanmaurice are just one game away from becoming the first women’s camogie team from the county win the ultimate title. These girls have been excellent all year defeating An Rinn from Waterford, Na Piarsaigh in the Munster Final and Roscommon’s Athleague in the semi-final in their run to the final. While the squad boosts well-known names like Alanna Maunsell, Aoife Behan, Patrice Diggin and captain Trisha Moran they are a squad that have strength in depth. At the moment the final against Kilmessan of Meath is pencilled in for St Brendan’s Park in Birr in Offaly. But as I am writing this it seems that after Tuesday night’s rain the pitch is unplayable but no alternative venue has been released. Surely they have a Plan B for an All-Ireland decider. But the venue won’t matter to the Kerry girls. They will be ready for the game where it takes place and the whole of the county should get behind them as they hope to make more history. They club is thanking all those who have supported them to date and to all those who contributed to the AllIreland training fund. CAMOGIE NEWS: The Kerry Camogie Board thanks all those in the Ballyduff area who contributed to their recent Church gate collection. They are also hoping for as much support as possible for their Christmas Draw with sellers now going door to door. The Kerry Camogie County Board ABM will take place in Austin Stack Park on Monday December 4th at 8.30pm. PARNELL’S NEWS: There was a great attendance at the Awards Night in the Rose Hotel which shows how successful the club has become. All the clubs camogie and hurling teams

accepted the applause of those present. It was great to see the Minor players who contested the County Final from the club doing the honours in presenting the medals. It was great to see the impressive array of silverware on display plus the performances of over a dozen Scor representatives went down a storm with all attending. Minor Training for the 2018 panel has commenced on Thursday evenings. The club wishes the Reen family all the best at the North Kerry Hurling Board Awards this Friday on behalf of the club. AUSTIN STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The club was strongly represented in the County finals of Scor na nOg. All those involved put in hours of dedication and practice and the club also thanks their coaches. The club will also be represented in a number of sections in the rest of the Scor competitions. The clubs much anticipated Annual Awards Night will take place on Sunday December 10th in the club rooms. Among those being presented with their medals on the day will be the u14’s who had a tremendous year including their trip to Feile. Well done to the club members who are winner s of the HK Property Services U15 Tralee District Board football championship. Presentations to the County League winning team will take place in the club on December 8th. The club’s 2018 calendar is now getting the final touches and will be launched and on sale shortly. BALLYMAC NEWS: The Ballymacelligott GAA club’s AGM will take place next Thursday November 30th at 7pm, in the club rooms. All full members are welcome. The club has completed a review of all teams and details are available from the club. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,4,9 16 and the next jackpot will be e5000 with the draw in O’Dwyer’s Bar. The Senior AGM will take place on Sunday December 3rd at 3pm in the Community Rooms. All motions and nominations must be sent to Conor Culloo and all registered club members are asked to attend. This meeting will be proceeded by the Juvenile AGM at 2pm at the same venue. Motions for the Juveniles go to Brenda Doody. Scor na nOg: The County Finals took place in the Killarney Racecourse with the club representing the Tralee District Board in music. The four musicians were unlucky not to progress to the next round. KERINS O’RAHILLY NEWS: Mental fitness in Sport: Our first session with State of Mind Ireland took place before a large attendance in Strand Road on Friday night last, 17th November. Those present were treated to an hour long discourse on various topics in mental health by brother and sister, Drs Martin & Susan Lawlor. The presentation was both moving and emotional as they recounted their experiences in all areas of mental health and offered advice on various questions from the audience. The main focus of their organisation is on intervention and education and also creating more awareness of mental health issues; building resilience and hope are key in how we handle adversity in our everyday life and the “5 A day for health and happiness” are the fundamentals around which this is based. The feedback from those present was most positive with many fulsome in their praise of the night and the presenters. A second session is planned for January 2018.

Girls News: Indoor training continues for all ages on Wednesday nights in the CBS The Green. The Girls enjoyed their day out in Cork and it was a great reward for all their hard work all season. Lotto: The Christmas jackpot is growing with next week’s prize now at €10,200. There was no winning ticket last week where the winning numbers drawn were: 1, 11, 17 & 31 - there were no match 3 winners. The five entrants for the special December draw were as follows: Gerard Casey, Tony and Josie Casey, Breda O’Regan, John Kelly and Michael O’Leary. AGM: Officers are busy preparing reports for our upcoming AGM which is being held on Friday night 1st December and nominations are now closed for motions and positions. SEMI-FINAL AND FIRST ROUNDS AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the two semi-finals of the Red Mills Unraced Bitch Stake. On Saturday night there are the first rounds of the Track Supporters Club A5 confined 525 yards. Starting on Friday December 1st it’s the T Nolan CVRT Test Centre Castleisland Kingdom Derby for 36 open class greyhounds over 525 yards with a winner’s prize of e7000. Greyhound fans gathered at the Track last Saturday night not to watch live racing at the venue but coverage of the Night of Stars from Shelbourne Park. Liam Dowling had another great night with Ballymac Meena winning and Coolavanny Pet finishing a strong second. Other Kerry dogs that won on the night were Pennylane Masara and SearchforaHero. Sport mourns Patsy Lynch: Kerry sport lost a much loved personality this week with the passing of Patsy Lynch. A life-long doggie man Patsy was the voice of the dogs for many years on Radio Kerry as well as writing for The Kerryman. Coursing Action: This weekend the action moves over the Limerick and Clare borders with coursing taking place in Rathkeale and at Killimer / Kilrush. In Ballyduff last weekend Whitehaired Mary took the All Age Bitch Stake while Bridewell Kit won the Oaks ticket. Lone Ranger did the same in Derby while Kyle Mozarty took home the much coveted Kit Browne North Kerry Cup. The Surplus Bitch Stake went to Optimistic Jack and the Working Members Stake was won by Grainne Rua. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Templeogue were the only Super League team to come to Tralee and claim a victory against the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors. Last Saturday night they emulated that achievement to inflict another home defeat on the Tralee side with a nine point win in front of another packed out Tralee Sports Complex. Dusan Bogdanovic landed the Warriors opening score and followed it with two more early baskets and when Kieran Donaghy chipped in from play and hit two free throws pushed the Warriors out to an 8-2 lead. Templeogue were back on level terms midway through the quarter with Stephen James, Puff Summers and Jason Killeen all in range and when Neil Randolph dropped in a couple from the free throw line Templeogue edged ahead 11-10. Goran Pantovic converted two from the line before shooting back-to-back scores and when Donaghy fired in the Warriors led 18-11. Sergi Sole Bertran hit two in a row for the visitors but when Eoin Quigley and Trae Pemberton both stepped in to land threes the Warriors led 25-17 at quarter time. Into the second quarter and Kieran Donaghy fired in a score from under the board and when he steadied to land from distance the Warriors led by 9. But at the other end Lorcan Murphy literally sprang into action for Templeogue as he acrobatically fired in nine points including a three point score from the corner to bring Templeogue right back into the contest. Goran Pantovic, Donaghy and couple from Trae Pemberton had the Warriors ahead by 11. The introduction of Jean Francois Basileu and Sergi Bertran paid dividends for the visitors with a couple of scores and with another from Summers and a three from James the Dublin side cut the advantage to 4. However Pantovic with a jump shot and Eoin Quigley with a big three point score saw the Warriors take a 46-39 lead to the long break. Trae Pemberton launched his second three of the game to open proceedings and Pantovic added another couple for the Warriors early in the third. But defensive gaps were beginning appear in the home side rearguard and Mike Bonaparte, Murphy and James all took their chances to hit a blitz of four three pointers to bring the sides level. The visitors surrendered some of the advantage with a quick succession of fouls with Bogdanovic and Pemberton obliging from the free throw line. However Bonaparte continued to torment the Warriors defence and another couple of scores and his third three of the quarter saw Templeogue take the lead for the first time at a crucial stage as the sides turned

to head down the stretch. Bertran added two from free throws for the League Champions and when Neil Randolph found the basket with the last score of the quarter Templeogue led by 64-59. A Pemberton three pointer cut the deficit to a single score early in the final quarter but the Warriors continued to invite the Dublin side to shoot from distance and their accuracy from range was proving to be difference between the sides. As the Warriors struggled to add to the scoreboard at one end the visitors hit three quick fire threes and at the midpoint of the quarter led by 9. A Fergal O’Sullivan three brought the home crowd to their feet as they did their best to summon a dramatic finale from the Warriors. But it wasn’t to be as Templeogue calmly added scores from Randolph and the outstanding Bonaparte to settle the contest late on. A score from Kieran Donaghy in the last few seconds brought the final deficit to single figures as Templeogue saw out the win by 80-71 in the end. Scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Trae Pemberton 20, Kieran Donaghy 17, Goran Pantovic 17 Black Amber Templeogue: Lorcan Murphy 23, Mike Bonaparte 19, Stephen James 11 The Warriors now lie in fifth place on the Super League table behind Templeogue, UCD Marian, Griffith Swords Thunder and Pyrobel Killester. Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is the trip to Belfast to take on Belfast Star in the Methodist College at 7.00pm on Saturday night. Following that they welcome UCC Demons to the Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday the 3rd December with a 3.00pm tip off. And on Friday the 8th December the Warriors head to the Mardyke to face the Demons in a Cup quarter final showdown. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: In the Lee Strand u14 Division 2 Kenmare Kestrels defeated St Brendan’s 29-26. St Brendan’s trailed by 6 points at half time and they put in a great effort in the second half and despite a late three pointer the Tralee side went down by a narrow margin. In other results in the Senior Men’s Division 2 TK Killarney Cougars defeated St Brendan’s 6354 while in the Senior Women’s Division 2 the Tralee ladies got the better of Ballybunion Wildcats by the narrowest of margins 4443. St Brendan’s beat Kenmare Kestrals in the Boys u14 Division 3 and in the Academy Division 1 while St Mary’s beat the Tralee boys in the Lee Strand Boys u14 Division 3. The Senior Men’s Division game was a cracker ending St Mary’s 66 St Brendan’s 65. St. Brendan’s Boys U10s and Girls

TRALEE IMPERIALS NEWS: In the feature game Imperials u16 Girls went down to St Mary’s 5236 in a game that was closer than the score-line suggests. The first two quarters were very tight with Imperials leading 12-10 after the first quarter and 26-25 at the half. St Mary’s outscored the Tralee side by 10 points in the third quarter and try as Imperials did they were unable to come back. There is a new format this year with the winner going forward to the knock-out stages while the loser will take on West Cork for another place in the knock out stages. West Cork has already lost to Clare. The team this year is being managed by David Hennessy and John Hegarty and they will be looking to have a strong side on duty. Kerry has reached the Oscar Traynor final in the past but have yet to lift the trophy. Could this be their year? The game kicks off at Mounthawk Park at 2pm. THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
