LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Donna and Mike are due to go on holiday soon but unfortunately there has been a death in the family and they can’t travel. So let’s investigate what rights they have and are they entitled to a refund? The first thing they should do is contact the airline in question and inform them of the details. The airline will need proof of the reason for cancelling within 28 days of your intended flight, this is normally the flight reservation number, confirmation of the relationship with the deceased along with suitable documentary evidence mostly in the form of a Death Certificate which can be obtained from the Hospital for a small fee. A full refund may depending on airline policy normally only given in the case of an “immediate family member” death but this encompasses a broad range of loved ones including : Spouse
, Civil Partner
, Children (including adopted/step children)
, Parents (including step parents), Brothers & Sisters (including step siblings)
, Grandparents & Grandchildren, Father/Mother-in-law, Brother/Sister-in-law
Son/Daughter-in-law. Airlines should give the same refund to the travelling companion as they do to the bereaved. An administration fee may be charged by the Airline and this will be deducted from your reimbursement. It’s important too to note that Maritime Passengers have rights similar to those available to airline passengers. Travel Insurance might be a separate route to getting the refund. If you cancel a flight for any other reason then you really are at the mercy of the Airlines terms and conditions and essentially the type of flight booked. Most reduced price tickets are non-refundable but Government tax refund requests can be made with a month although booking and credit card/debit card fees are again non-refundable. It’s vital as always to read the small print and be informed of your rights when booking as the terms and conditions can be relatively difficult to navigate at the best of times. Legal Quip: When everything seems to be going against you, remember, the Airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. Henry Ford

Medical Matters DR KEVIN RYLE TALKS ABOUT THE COMMON COLD The common cold is a mild viral infection that causes symptoms such as a runny nose (with clear or green mucus), sore throat, cough, sneezing, a hoarse voice and nasal stuffiness. Unlike the flu or tonsillitis, there is usually no increased temperature or enlarged glands with the common cold. “Colds” are more common during the winter months with adults having up to four episodes and children up to 8 episodes during the season. Symptoms generally start to improve after five to seven days but can last longer in children with the cough sometimes lasting for up to two to three weeks. As the common cold is caused by a virus, antibiotics do not work for this condition. Instead lozenges, saline nasal drops/sprays, vapour rubs and gargling salt water may be of benefit. Furthermore paracetamol, ibuprofen and decongestants can help ease the symptoms. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of isotonic fluids.

Vitamin C and/or zinc may help to reduce the duration and severity of the illness if started early although there is not hard science to prove this. The viruses that cause the common cold are highly contagious. When you speak, cough, sneeze etc. droplets containing the virus enter the air and can be inhaled by others around you. Similarly if you have a cold and rub your eyes or nose and then touch someone else or an object (e.g. a door handle) the virus can also be transmitted onwards. So if you have the common cold, wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, especially after touching your nose, mouth or eyes. Use tissues when you cough or sneeze and dispose immediately after use. If you are concerned about your symptoms or if you have prolonged symptoms then you should contact your GP.

DAIRYMASTER, IT TRALEE AND LERO AGREE MAJOR €2M R&D PROGRAMME Farmers could soon be able to avail of Artificial Intelligence to assist in managing their farm as a result of a new €2m Research & Development partnership announced this week by Irish dairy equipment manufacturer Dairymaster, IT Tralee and Lero, the Irish Software SFI Research Centre. The programme is backed by Science Foundation Ireland. A team of researchers will be hired, including PhD students and post-doctoral scientists and engineers, to work with Lero and Dairymaster R&D teams. The researchers will have a range of skills from embedded electronics and sensor technology to software development and data analytics. The project will offer researchers a unique opportunity to conduct cutting edge research while being embedded as part of an award winning R&D team. “Dairymaster is committed to providing the best possible technologies to our customers 6

and this is the key reason why we are investing in this area,” commented Professor Edmond Harty, CEO of Dairymaster. As part of the R&D programme, Lero and Dairymaster will look to develop autonomous systems to ease the workload on the dairy farm. “The availability of skilled labour has been identified as one of the key challenges to the dairy industry,” commented Dr Joseph Walsh, Head of the School of STEM and Lero researcher at IT Tralee. “Automating labour intensive processes will not only be hugely beneficial to the farmer but will also enhance animal health and milk quality by ensuring tasks are completed to consistently high levels.” “We see this whole area Friday 2nd February 2018

of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems as being key to the future of dairy farm profitability and sustainability and we are delighted to be involved in the largest indigenous project in Lero,” explained Dr John Daly, Research and Innovation Manager, Dairymaster. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... THE GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION - BUSINESS PEOPLE ...ARE YOU READY? By Tom Martin, MA, MIITD, LIB, QFA, CUA, CUC, CUG, CMILT, AMSOE, AMIRTE “Change has never happened this fast before, and it will never be this slow again” Graeme Wood. We live in a fast-paced world, where the only constant is the reality of change. Nowhere is this more evident but in the proliferation of information available through social media, and the internet. Our world has shrunk to such an extent, that privacy has become an ever-decreasing luxury. It is so easy to “google” anyone or anything, and immediately get copious amounts of information that may, or may not, be accurate. But social media does much more than this - it also allows any individual to pass commentary on anything they wish - and the more followers you have, the wider your message is distributed. This is a very modern phenomenon, and is probably the most striking aspect of our lives

today - with no parallels in history. It has grown to such an extent, that political leaders and opinion formers routinely ignore the traditional media outlets, in favour of distributing their messages without filtering, through social media. So, guess who has the most “twitter” followers in the world? You are correct, it is the Pope - with over 40 Million!” While the internet and social media are tremendous additions to our lives, there has been a growing concern at the very great intrusions they can also make to the lives of private individuals. Targeted advertising through the monitoring of “browsing” habits, together with the ease of distribution of information, has created real fears that individuals privacy is increasingly compromised and that their consumer choices are reduced through such targeted advertising. It is against this background, and because existing data protection legislation has

become completely outdated, that the European Union has decided to introduce the widest ranging change to how data, which includes both paper and electronic information, is collected, retained and used. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on the 25th May, 2018, and will have huge ramifications for every organisation and business. What many people don’t realise, is that the GDPR has already been in force since May, 2016, but will not begin to be enforced until May, 2018 - a very short time away indeed. By this date, organisations, businesses, companies, sole traders, and just about anyone who processes data on any individual, must be compliant with the requirements and obligations of GDPR. So what exactly does the introduction of GDPR mean, and how will this impact you? As a general rule of thumb,

the larger the organisation, the sooner you need to commence preparation. Next week , in part 2 ,we look at the 10 different ways that GDPR could impact on your business and how to prepare . Tom Contact Tom Martin today @ 066-7143758 or 086-2327130 or info@constrain.ie Visit www.constrain.ie

KEN HEADS UP RESTRUCTURE OF TRALEE CHAMBER ALLIANCE TRALEE Chamber Alliance has appointed local business man and entrepreneur, Ken Tobin, to oversee the recently announced plans to restructure and re-energise Tralee Chamber Alliance from the 1st February 2018. Over the course of a sixmonth contract, Mr Tobin’s duties will include the day-today management of Tralee Chamber Alliance following the departure of former CEO Kieran Ruttledge who has returned to his role as CEO of Aqua Dome Tralee. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Aidan Kelly, said: “I believe it is the prudent thing to do now to show the business community in Tralee that it is business as usual for Tralee Chamber Alliance while we work to enhance the service we can offer to Tralee town. Ken’s role will be in the form of a contract with clear tasks identified primarily to help me as President and the Leadership Team to develop a clear framework for Tralee 8

Chamber Alliance going forward.” Ken Tobin is a proud Traleenative and a founding board member of Tralee Chamber Alliance in 2012. A Chartered Project Manager, Ken Tobin has worked on some of the largest projects in Kerry before eventually setting up his first business in Tralee in 2005. More recently, in his role as co-Director of HQ Tralee, Ken has assisted in facilitating the growth of over 30 businesses in Tralee town centre. Ken Tobin, who has started in his role as Managing Consultant to Tralee Chamber Alliance, said: “Being local, and raising a family here in Kerry, has taught me to appreciate what we have to offer. No other town in Ireland can rival Tralee for potential. We need to build a strong inclusive team, to represent Tralee in all facets of our economic society, to be the driving force behind Tralee’s emergence. Tralee needs a Friday 2nd February 2018

strong Chamber of Commerce to facilitate investment, job creation, promotion and development. Tralee also needs a clear vision. We have a body of work to do as a town to improve what we offer, but all the crucial elements of what we need are already in place.” Over the course of the coming weeks, Ken Tobin will engage with a number of key stakeholders and business people in Tralee to initiate a number of projects that will take Kerry’s capital town to the next level. “We need a Chamber of Commerce for the next generation, and new vision for Tralee must harness the skills and experiences of its people,

and fully embrace the opinions of all stakeholders,” said Ken Tobin. Tralee Chamber Alliance is located at 18 Denny Street, Tralee and is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4.30pm. For details on how to join the growing team, please contact 066 7121472 or email info@ Tralee.ie.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY? Heartfelt Cardio Screening is coming to your area soon, with the revolutionary BPro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The BPro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a Healthstats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought

back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. For 2018, at the end of EVERY month I will be doing a monthly favourites of products and things that I absolutely ADORED during the month. In no particular order, here are my favourites from January…

JANUARY FAVOURITES

This month my favourites are more makeup based, I’ve been trying and loving lots of different products this month. Here are my faaaaaves… SOSU LASHES (HAILEY) I’ll be honest, when SoSu lashes launched in Pennys I absolutely HATED them (and still do, the band is waaaay too stiff) BUT, SoSu redeemed herself in my eyes because I’m obsessing over her range of lashes that are in the marble packaging (available in pharmacies and slightly more expensive but worth it). The style I’m currently loving is Hailey, literally wear it in nearly every Instagram look. I get so many uses out of one pair, like at least 15.

BODYSHOP TEA TREE FACE WASH I used this face wash YEARS ago and bought it before Christmas as I was waiting on another one to be delivered. Safe to say I haven’t even opened the one I was waiting for as this one is working SO well with my skin! I would definitely recommend this if you have oily/ combination skin that is prone to the odd spot (or 7). Very affordable (under €10), I got mine in CH. WET N WILD MEGA GLO HIGHLIGHTER (PRECIOUS PETALS) If you went to my Beautiful Favourites Event at the beginning of the month you’ll know how amaaaazing this highlighter is. It’s SO affordable (literally €5) and honestly gives my ride or die - Champagne Pop, a run for it’s money. As far as I’m aware Costellos Pharmacy Tralee are the only stockists of Wet n Wild (if I’m wrong let me know).

CLARINS SOS PRIMERS I got these in the post well before Christmas so I have been using/loving them for months. The radiance and redness ones are definitely my two faves! They just launched last week so now you all can try these amazing primers. There’s literally one for any skin problem - dark spots, redness, blemishes, fatigue and dullness! Trust me, these are fantastic!

BENEFIT BROW PRODUCTS I couldn’t believe it last month when Benefit (The first makeup brand I EVER used) contacted me and wanted to send me some brow products to try!! You all know Anastasia Beverly Hills have been my RIDE OR DIE brow products for years so I was dying to see how the Benefit products compared. I have been using and LOVING all the brow products, The KaBrow, Precisley My Brow Pencil, High Brow, Browvo Conditioning Primer (must have!) & Brow Zings all have got my seal of approval! Can’t even remember when the last time I used my Anastasia brow gel, and that’s BIG. BLANK CANVAS E03 BRUSH This small but MIGHTY brush has been a literal game changer. Marketed as a lip/ inner corner highlight brush which I also use to do a cut crease. Literally cannot do my makeup without this brush at the moment. Blank Canvas are slaying the brush game!

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! Last week I talked about the importance of consistency so I have been practicing what I preach. If you don’t know, I recently started a fitness Instagram account, just for me to post any fitness related content and also to be more accountable. @rebeccashorttfit if you wanna go check it out! Two weeks ago on there I posted my measurements for the first time, and I then updated them last Friday. I got a great response with people wanting to follow my journey so I said why not post them here weekly too! For the past few months I stopped tracking my food on myfitnesspal, just to give myself a break, I don’t want to have to rely on tracking macros forever, you know yourself. I have started to track them again just to

remain accountable to myself and make sure I’m making the right progress. I tracked macros consistently for most of last year and I found it worked really well for me. I will not be posting my daily calories or macros here, as everyone is SO SO different and my macros/calories are personal to me. If you wish to track macros or figure out what calories you should be consuming I recommend you find a reputable personal trainer (who knows about nutrition) and discuss it with them. Tracking macros is not for everyone, but I know it’s what works for me. By the way, macros are just the breakdown of food - Protein, Carbohydrates and Fat.

My current percentages of macros from my calories on training days are… 33% carbs 36% protein and 31% fat.

MEASUREMENTS WEEK 1: Bust: 34 inches Hips: 44 inches Thighs: 28 inches Waist: 31.5 inches

WEEK 2: Bust: 34 inches Hips: 42 (-2 inches) Thighs: 27.5 (-.5 inches) Waist: 31.5 inches

I really focus on measurements rather than the scales, as being a woman the scales can fluctuate SO much and can be inaccurate when it comes to progress. I do weigh myself daily and take a weekly average from that but I don’t focus on the number.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

(B)raising my game

At Croí restaurant I love both braising dishes and using lesser known cuts of meat which turn out to be the tastiest of meals... So here is a beauty of a recipe for you to try.

BRAISED LAMB NECK WITH TURNIP

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Preheat the oven to 140. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. In a casserole, heat the oil, add the lamb and cook over moderately high heat, turning, until browned, 10 minutes; transfer to a plate.

Six 1 1/2-inch-thick, bone-in lamb necks Sea salt Freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons rapeseed oil 2 celery ribs, chopped 1 carrot, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 1 turnip, peeled and chopped 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 anchovy fillet 2 cups dry white wine 2 cups chicken stock 1 cup raisins 1 bay leaf, and 1 sprig of parsley, coriander and rosemary, tied in a cheesecloth

Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the casserole. Add the celery, carrot, onion, turnip, tomato paste and anchovy and cook, stirring, until the vegetables just start to soften. Stir in the wine, scraping up any browned bits, and simmer for 3 minutes. Add the stock, raisins and herb bundle and bring to a boil. Return the lamb to the casserole, cover and braise in the oven for 2 hours, until the meat is very tender. Discard the herb bundle and season with salt and pepper. Serve. Make Ahead The lamb stew can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving. Recipes by

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAGICIAN WAS WORKING ON A CRUISE SHIP

Since the audience was different each week, the magician did the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: the captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show “look, it’s not the same hat”, or “look, he’s hiding flowers under the table”, or “ hey, why are all of the cards aces?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captains parrot. One stormy night on the pacific, the ship unfortunately sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea, as fate would have it, with the parrot. They stared at each other with hatred, but didn’t utter a word This went on for a day, then two days, then three days. Finally the parrot couldn’t hold back and said “Okay I give up, where’s the ship?”

A MAN ABSOLUTELY HATED HIS GIRLFRIEND’S CAT

A man absolutely hated his girlfriend’s cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park. As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway. The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat! He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and 20

another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there. Hours later the man calls home to his girlfrien: “Jen, is the cat there?” “Yes”, the girlfriend answers, “why do you ask?” Frustrated, the man answered, “Put that son of a b@%#h on the phone, I’m lost and need directions!”

TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.

A boss had an affair for the first time with his secretary. They spent time in his office till late at night. They kissed and cuddled and when they were done, the secretary turned to him and said, it is late and you are all messed up, your wife will take one look at you and realize what we did. Don’t worry he said, I got this... So the man got home. He did nothing to fix himself up. Only thing, He went to the grass and rubbed his shoes into the grass. Disheveled. Smelling perfume and lipstick all over he went and knocked on the door. His wife opened the door to see him disheveled, smelling like perfume, lipstick all over. Before she opened her mouth, he said... “Now before you say anything, I have to tell you that I was late because I just had an affair with my secretary. We were together for two hours and she kissed me all over that is why I have lipstick all over. Also that is why I have perfume smell all over..So the wife took one look at him, and screamed... You Scoundrel ! You expect me to believe such a story?! Look at your shoes, you have been playing golf again with your friends and got some waitress to kiss and leave a lipstick print on your shirt and rub all over you to smell like perfume, so you can come to lie to me. Get inside and clean yourself up! And let this be the last time you go golfing with your friends again... and I don’t want to hear a peep from you!

TORQUING CARS! MOTORING SNIPPETS •

Retailer Charles Hurst has expanded its Dublin presence with a new southside showroom at Goatstown Road, creating 10 jobs. There is a wide spread of premium makes and models (more than 2,000 vehicles in stock) including preowned Audis, BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches, Aston Martins, Bentleys, Ferraris and Maseratis. • The latest move follows the establishment of the company’s new multimillioneuro Audi showroom in Sandyford last year and its Usedirect Ireland business in 2015. We wish buyers and sellers all the best. • Wayne Rooney is selling his BMW i8. He’s hardly stuck for a few bob, is he? The hybrid sports car, in metallic ionic silver, is listed on Auto Trader. I know he doesn’t get around on the pitch as much as before, and his car didn’t chew up miles either. It has fewer than 8,000 miles on the clock. The i8 has a top speed of 155mph and a 0-60mph time of 4.4 seconds. BMW claims it can return 134mpg, which means, with all his millions, he’s only had to fill it up now and again. It’s listed for £64,995, and anyone interested in buying it is being invited to put in a ‘transfer offer’ - with a part-exchange service advertised. • Worrying to hear Jaguar Land Rover will temporarily reduce production at its Halewood factory later this year as part of a response to weakening demand because of Brexit and tax increases on diesel cars. • Some people never learn. According to the latest AA insurance survey, nearly one in 12 motorists here has been “involved in a collision or experienced a near-miss” while under the influence of alcohol. The survey of more than 6,000 motorists found that 7.39pc had been involved in such a scenario where they, or another road user, had drink taken. What does it take to get these people to listen to a bit of sense? • Volkswagen’s electric ID hatchback will go into production in November of next year. The ID concept can, according to the carmaker, stretch to up to 600km with one charge. • A new survey shows that up to 50pc of used cars fail at least one major category during pre-purchase inspection. The online marketplace for car repair, ClickMechanic, trawled its pre-purchase inspection data to see what was most likely to be in need of repair.Top of the list were electricals/controls, wheels and tyres (23pc “scoring poorly”). Exterior body issues (18pc) come next. The likes of suspension and brakes also gave cause for concern, with 12pc scoring poorly on the front suspension, brakes and steering, and 11pc for the rear suspension and brakes. (INDO Motoring )

OLD-AGE TENSIONER

I have a 2008 BMW 320d that has done just over 100,000 miles and seems to require little servicing. Is there anything that should really be done to keep it ticking over? JC H.J. The worry with N47D20A and N47D20D engines built from March 2007-May 2009 is failure of the tensioners. The system was modified from May 2009 and five years later BMW admitted the problem, started checking and began fitting cars with revised tensioners.

MALICE, A FORECOURT

I put six litres of petrol in my Nissan Qashqai diesel to top up the tank. What can I do? AS If it was only six litres you should be OK, as long as you quickly add a lubricity additive (such as Wynn’s), run the car on high-lubricity superdiesel fuel and do not let the tank go below half full for at least 2,000 miles. With luck, the petrol will float on top, then gradually disperse into the diesel without damaging the high-pressure diesel injection pump. If you allow the tank to get low, then petrol could find its way into the pump. The only alternative is to empty the tank and dispose responsibly of the contaminated diesel. 26

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SAFETY CONCERNS MEANS YES ITS TRUE! NO SHOW FOR TRALEE AT CHILDRENS GAMES IN JERUSALEM This week Mike Culloty , Secretary of Tralee ICG reported “ It is with great disappointment that Tralee ICG(International Childrens Games) announces that it will not be sending a team to represent Tralee at this year’s ICG Games to be held in Jerusalem in late July and early August. The decision was taken at last week’s committee meeting and was strongly influenced by safety concerns for children, coaches and adults who would be travelling with the team.

Tralee ICG regrets that it cannot afford the opportunity to represent our town and county to the young athletes who have already indicated their intention to attend trials for these Games. It is the first time since 2005 that Tralee will not have a team and there is a sadness all round associated with what was a very hard decision to make in the interests of the athletes and coaches. As always Tralee ICG extends its appreciation to everyone who has supported our participation over the past 13 years and to all the wonderful athletes, their parents and team coaches who have worked with the various squad members in the different sport disciplines in that time. Participation in future years will be examined again in 2019.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... ALLEN FROM MERCY MOUNTHAWK ACHIEVES MERIT IN TEXACO ART COMPETITION Says Allen .... I used the technique pointillism for my drawing, I was tempted to try this technique after my art teacher Ms. O’Shea Daly introduced me to the impressionist painter Seurat. For my illustration I used a black marker and pen. I spent about three hours each night at this drawing and It took two and a half weeks to finish. I’m privileged to be given a special merit award in the category B in the Texaco Art Competition 2017.

KERRY’S YOUTH COMMENDED AT THE LEE STRAND / KERRY GARDA YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Over two hundred and fifty people from across the county attended the 20th year celebration of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2017 in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday, January 26th. The celebration was attended by the Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Anne-Marie McMahon. The evening commenced with dinner and was followed by a presentation of twenty seven awards, accompanied with an inspiring citation of each winner’s achievements. Nineteen year old Dale O’Carroll from Greenville in Listowel was described as inspirational when he was announced as the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2017. Dale was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy and the Overall Winner Certificate to mark his achievement. Dale who plays basketball with Special Olympics in Tralee offers great encouragement with their younger participants. Hugo Wells, Tralee and Tara Whittington, Caherciveen. Donal Pierse, Chairperson, Lee Strand commented “Lee Strand is delighted to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards since 1998. Over the past 20 years Lee Strand in association with An Garda Siochana have always been proactive in acknowledging and identifying the positive work by young people and voluntary groups to enhance community life in Kerry. The awards are a fantastic celebration of their outstanding achievements.” Chief Superintendent Tom Myers stated “An Garda

Síochána consider it essential to engage in a positive fashion with the young people in our communities. In doing so it is necessary to acknowledge positive achievements by those young people, whether these are in the fields of voluntary work in the community, sport, or education. It would not be possible to acknowledge this achievement and have an occasion whereby the families of nominees can join in the celebrations without the support from Lee Strand, the local Co-Op highly respected in the community.” Domnick Walsh Photography

ANAM CARA BEREAVEMENT EVENING KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: INCOME TAX BANDS AND RATES Question I’m a PAYE worker. What income tax will I pay in 2018? Answer Changes to income tax bands were announced as part of Budget 2018. The amount of tax that you have to pay depends on your personal circumstances. Tax is charged as a percentage of your income. The percentage that you pay depends on the amount of your income. The first part of your income, up to a certain amount, is taxed at 20%. This is known as the standard rate of tax and the amount that it applies to is known as the standard rate tax band. The remainder of your income is taxed at the higher rate of tax, which is 40%. The amount that you can earn before you start to pay the higher rate of tax is known as your standard rate cut-off point. For 2018 the standard rate of tax remains at 20%, but the standard rate tax bands have been increased as follows:

Anam Cara the organisation that supports bereaved parents, will hold a Bereavement Information Evening on Tuesday 13th of February from 19:30 to 21:30 in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The event gives parents an opportunity to hear a professional, experienced in bereavement support, talk about the many challenges families have to face into after the death of their son or daughter. Even if you have attended one of these evening before in our experience you will come away with new information. A guest speaker Kay Buttimer experienced in supporting bereaved parents will talk for about forty minutes. Afterwards there’ll be an opportunity to speak/listen to other bereaved parents or to speak to the professional should you have any questions or concerns. One bereaved mother who attended a recent Anam Cara event said: “Both my husband and I felt it helped us in our grief to be in a place where we felt safe and comfortable to express the way we feel and think. I am good at talking but my husband is deep and I find for him the more interaction we have with other parents like ourselves then he gets the nerve to say something. It might be small but it’s a start.” Anam Cara CEO Sharon Vard stressed that this event is open to all bereaved parents “regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death or whether the death was recent or not. Anam Cara gives bereaved mums and dads a chance to meet and connect with other bereaved parents in a safe and comfortable setting. Here you can find a level of support and understanding that – even with the best will in the world – it can be difficult for family and friends to offer.” On their website, anamcara.ie, you can view testimonies from bereaved parents and couples who have attended Anam Cara events. There are videos on A Dad’s Grief, Sudden and Traumatic Death, and The Grieving Family. The Information Evening is a free event. However, Anam Cara will need to confirm numbers. If attending, please RSVP to info@anamcara.ie before Monday 12th February or call the Information Line on 085 2888 888.

Yes, the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “Solid Gold session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .” January is nearly gone and its normally a quiet month so I think its time for a party night “ says Chris According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 60’s 70’ 80’s & 90’s ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with that music , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into the older Music ....we are talking Beatles , Bee Gees

, The Rolling Stones , Wings , Pink Floyd , The Monkees Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba , the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac and who could forget the 90’s .... TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR A TRALEE SPORTING BLAST FROM THE PAST: For a change this week we look back as a major sporting success for a team from the town that took place 25 years ago last weekend. 1993 was the year that Lee Strand Ladies Team were top of the basketball world as they won the Cup at the newly opened National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. Since then the last weekend in January that venue has been the target for all basketball teams. And before this year’s Women’s Senior Cup final that Lee Strand Ladies team was honoured for that success a quarter of a century ago. Sadly in this year’s Women’s Cup final the curse of the Kerry 5-in-arow struck again as Aine McKenna from Duagh and her Ambassador UCC Glanmire team mates were defeated as they looked to make history by winning the Cup for the 5th year in a row. They went down by an agonising 2 points to DCU Mercy. There was also heartbreak for Tralee girls Meadbh Barry and Laura Hoffman who are working in Dublin and playing with Killester. They were beaten by the James Fleming coached Fr Mathews from Cork. But back to better times in 1993 and coach Jimmy Diggins recalled the 59-57 win against Dublin’s Naomh Mhuire who were hot favourites to take the title. “It was magic and the place was heaving as there was an atmosphere that only basketball can create. We had won the Cup in 1990 when we just got the better of Blarney but they had disbanded in the meantime and we had some of their girls with us that year. “It looked like we were going to end up on the wrong side of the result in 93 as we were 10 points down going down the stretch. I called a time out and we went on a full court press and then Caroline Forde grabbed the game and hit three three-pointers to put us right back into it. “They did have a chance to win it but luck was on our side and the Cup was heading back to Tralee. It was a big win for us as Naomh Mhuire were a very good side and indeed they won the Cup for the following two seasons. It was a great time for Lee Strand and a

36

number of the girls went on to play for Ireland. “It is a game that I will always remember as I am sure will the huge numbers who travelled from the town to support the team. Hopefully we will see a National League Women’s team back in Kerry in the near future. Look at this year and St Mary’s Castleisland won the NICC Cup so there are plenty of top women’s basketball players in the county.” The Lee Strand Squad from that day in 1993: Caroline Forde (who was the game’s MVP), Rosa Breen, Annette Forde, Mary Jo Curran, Sandy Fitzgibbon, Bernice Hoffman, Deirdre Twomey, Sharyn Edwards, Angela O’Sullivan, Mairead Ensonan, Susan Browne and Head Coach Jimmy Diggins. For those sporting anoraks out there Jameson St Vincent’s defeated Star of the Sea 90-63 in the Men’s Cup final in 1993. Fulton Connection to CBS Boys Loss: Following on from the Presentation Secondary School’s Cup win – where they defeated Muckross Park College Dublin – there were hopes of a Tralee schools double. CBS took on St Malachy’s Belfast in the u16 Boys A final but they came up against a player who was to have a memorable day. CJ Fulton is the grandson of the aforementioned Danny Fulton and he hit an amazing 47 points including 15 three pointers as the Northern Ireland side saw off the Tralee boys 62-46. St Malachy’s were 28-15 up at the end of the first quarter and 43-23 up at the break with Fulton having 11 of his three hit by this stage. Tralee tried hard but there was no way back for the boys with Rapolas Bulvydas top scoring on 21 points. Niall Fitzmaurice had 10 points, Ciaran Brosnan 6, Darragh Broderick 5 points and Luke Chester with 4. LOCAL BASKETBALL NEWS: The Lee Strand Juvenile Cup and Plate finals are down for decision this weekend. The action takes place in the Moyderwell Gym Tralee and the Presentation Gym Killarney on Saturday and Sunday. In the Pres Gym on Saturday at 4.20pm the u12 Boys Division 3 final sees St Paul’s take on Killarney Cougars. Following this at 5.20 its

Friday 2nd February 2018

Tralee Imperials versus St Anne’s in the u12 Boys Division 2 final. On Sunday St Brendan’s are in the u14 Division 1 Boys final where they play Cougars at 3.30pm while at 4.45pm in the u18 Boys Cup St Brendan’s take on either Cougars or Caherciveen, ST BRENDAN’S NEWS: In a busy week for the St Brendan’s there were wins for the u14 Boys Division 1and 3 teams, the u18’s in the Lee Strand Cup, in the u16 Boys Cup and Division 3 Plate . TRALEE SUCCESS WITH A DIFFERENT SHAPED BALL: There was plenty more good news for Tralee sides this week with the rugby club having another big win in what is becoming a great run in the Munster Junior Cup. While they might be struggling in the League they have put in two great Cup performances. The latest came with a 27-17 point win at home to Highfield. A Ronan O’Sullivan try converted by Jack Quilter put Tralee ahead early on. But they were down 17-7 at the break. However a Quilter penalty and a Danny Cournane try got Tralee back into the game. They wrapped up the win with further tries from Mikey Lyne and Fearghal O’Nuallain. They are now into Round 5 where they await the winners of Cashel and Muskerry. Before that they have a huge local derby in the League this weekend. KERRY FOOTBALLERS AND HURLERS WIN BUT LADIES LOOSE: What could be classed as an experimental Kerry senior side dug deep to see off Donegal in their opening Allianz National League encounter. For the management team they will be happy with the two points and with the experience gained by the younger players. It also takes the will he / won’t he play question over David Clifford off the agenda as he did well on his debut. Overall the team did well but there are certainly aspects that will need work as conceding 3-14 will not lead to many wins. With the new structure games are coming much quicker so training regimes will be tweaked to take this into consideration. Kerry are away to Mayo this Saturday night

with a 7pm throw-in in Casstlebar where again the display will be as important as the result. Darren’s Debut Captain: Last week’s game will also probably feature in many pub quizzes and not just for the fact of David Clifford’s debut. Shane Murphy was the Kerry captain on the day in the absence of Fionn Fitzgerald. So who was the last Kerry player to do it? It was Tralee’s Darren Aherne 23 years ago. Now the FAI’s Regional Development Officer Darren was captain on his debut in a Munster Championship quarter final away win at Limerick. Austin Stacks were the county champions and he was the sole representative on the team. Big Win for the Hurlers: Kerry hurlers made light of their trip to London as they came home with a 2-30 to 1-13 win. There will be stiffer tests ahead but like the footballers its 2 points on the board. Kerry are at home to Carlow this Sunday in Austin Stacks Park at 2pm. Carlow were defeated last week so if Kerry can win they would be in a great position to at least retain their National Hurling League Division 2A. Ladies Lose but there are questions that must be asked: The Kerry Ladies went down 2-17 to 0-09 points in their League opener in Knocknagoshel. Kerry were missing a number of regulars and manager Graham Shine said afterwards that there are positives to be taken from the game. However one has to question the wisdom of having a Munster side that included 4 Kerry players playing the day before. From what I understand the girls were involved in over 2 hours of football on Saturday so how is that preparation for a League game on Sunday? It must also be disappointing that the Ladies game was not played as a double header in Killarney. And if it was thought that the pitch in Fitzgerald Stadium could not take two games then play it in the Legion or Dr Crokes so fans could get to both games. On a positive note for ladies football the rescheduled EGM saw a new County Executive elected. The new Committee under Chairman Mike Moriarty from Ballyduff will now begin work with the first task of filling a number of positions that are still vacant. Colleges: With two Kerry colleges in one of the Corn Ui Mhuiri semifinal – where The Sem Killarney will take on PS Chorca Dhuibhne there are hopes that it can become an all Kerry final. For that Tralee CBS will need to see of Collaiste Chollm from Ballincollig. The Tralee side went down to The Sem in last year’ s decider but that was after an epic three game semifinal battle with Colaiste Chriost Ri. No semi-final is ever easy but if Tralee can play to their potential then hopefully they can progress. CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS: There was plenty of Kerry success at the North and South Munster Cross-country championships with Tralee schools in action in

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER the Northern event. The first 15 in all events go forward to the Munster final in Waterford IT on February 23rd. From a team point of view Tralee CBS won the Minor Boys 1500, the Junior Boys and the Senior Boys races. Mercy Mounthawk won the Intermediate Boys race. TRALEE NOT ATTENDING THE INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S GAMES THIS YEAR: There was disappointment this week when it was announced that Tralee ICG will not be sending a team to represent Tralee at this year’s International Children’s Games to be held in Jerusalem in late July and early August. The decision was taken at last week’s committee meeting and was strongly influenced by safety concerns for children, coaches and adults who would be travelling with the team. As always Tralee ICG extends its appreciation to everyone who has supported our participation over the past 13 years and to all the wonderful athletes, their parents and team coaches who have worked with the various squad members in the different sport disciplines in that time. Participation in future years will be examined again in 2019. AT THE TRACK: There is racing at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium on Friday night, Saturday afternoon from 2.12 and Saturday night where the first race is off at 7.42pm. The GMHD.ie Juvenile classic with a winner’s prize of €15000 starts on Friday February 9th as well as the Ladbrokes Easter Cup trial stake over 550 yds. The track is also taking entries for the Con and Annie Kirby AAO trial stake which takes place on Friday February 23rd. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: In the u11’s both the A’s and B’s were in action away to Listowel with both teams putting in excellent dispalys. It was top quality football from both clubs with the likes of Shay Kelliher, Adam Evans, Matthew Rogers, Luke Silles, Conor Lucey, Cathal Morris, Tadhg Healy, Fionn Ó Dálaigh, Conor Crean and Leon O Connor all impressing. U-13 League: The U-13 side made the long trip south to play Kenmare and were a little unfortunate to lose out on a score-line 6 – 2. The game was played on a very heavy pitch with Tom Quilligan scoring both Dynamos goals. Academy: There were great numbers were in attendance at our Academy last Friday evening, despite the inclement weather. Well done to all the coaches who are giving their time to pass on their knowledge to the young players. PARK LIFE: Well done to the u11’s who put

in a great performance in their two games away to LB Rovers in Ballybunion. The B’s were at home to Listowel Celtic in Christy Leahy Park and again the standard of football shows the skills of the players. Liam O’Connell was outstanding for this side. The u14’swent down to Killarney Celtic but probably had one eye on their big game this weekend. They are at home to Mallow United in the Last 32 of the National Cup in Christy Leahy Park at 2pm and all support will be appreciated by the team. The u16’s bowed out of the National Cup in the Last 32 going down to Charleville. The home side were ahead but the visitors took over in the second half. The Youth teams run in the Munster Youths Cup goes on as they defeated Ballingarry 1-0 to reach the Last 4. Killarney Celtic are the only Kerry side to win this trophy but this Park team now have eyes on the prize. The goal came in the second half when Aaron Ward and Conor O’Brien combined to set up Adam Ward to smash the ball home. The Park will be away to either Dungarvan United or Clonmel Celtic in the Last 4. CSKA TRALEE WIN THE ONLY GOOD NEWS IN THE CUP: CSKA kept the flag flying for Tralee sides in the weekend’s Greyhound Bar Cup first round. They won on penalties after drawing 1-1 with CS Clochain Breanainn. Both Tralee Dynamos and Park are out with the former being well beaten at Dingle Bay Rovers while the latter lost away to Fenit Samphiers. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: There are changes to some of the team’s training times so please contact your coach if you are in any doubt. Most of the teams are indoors in the The Green CBS Gym.
