Medical Matters

DR KAREN SOFFE TALKS ABOUT APPLYING FOR A REFUND OF MEDICAL EXPENSES

Have you applied for a tax refund on your medical expenses? Medical expenses add up during the year. If you pay income tax you may be entitled to a refund. Many people are not aware of this or don't realise how straightforward and easy this is to do. These are all costs PAID BY YOU whether they on your own behalf or on behalf of another person. You receive tax relief for health expenses at your standard rate of tax, 20%. Nursing home expenses are given at your highest rate of tax, up to 40%. You cannot claim relief for: • Expenses that will be repaid by insurance companies, the Health Service Executive (HSE) or any other body • Expenses that you receive compensation for • Routine dental or ophthalmic (eye) care. The following are just some of the things which you can include as medical expenses: • GP visits. • All medicines prescribed by a doctor. • Non routine dental costs (e.g. orthodontic treatments, root canal work, bridges, etc). • Physiotherapy fees.

• IVF (whether here or abroad). • Any extra costs of Maternity care. • Educational Psychological Assessment for a child. • Speech and Language Therapy. • Products made especially for people with coeliac disease or diabetes. • Nursing home fees. You can claim for repayment within 4 years. For example you can claim now for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. You can claim on-line by using the PAYE Services which you can access using the “myaccount” facility on www.revenue.ie. This is the quickest and easiest way. Otherwise you can apply my filling out a MED1 form. You do not have to send the receipts initially but you may be asked for them and you have to keep them for a period of 6 years. We recommend that you keep a folder or envelope at home and store all receipts relating to medical expenses, add them together at the end of the year and apply each January. The refund is paid directly into your bank account and usually takes only 2 weeks.

Remain in My Mind is a Transition Year Mini-Company set up by three students from Presentation Secondary School Tralee. Our names are Erin Moss, Rachel Kilgallen, Kate Hennessy and we are good friends. When given the chance to create a product for our enterprise project, we put our heads together and went with our hearts creating ‘Remain in My Mind’. This product is an interactive, memory activity book designed for people living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. On every page of this book you will find brain stimulating Activities such as crosswords, word searches, personalised pages, rapid maths and much, much more. From the beginning we were determined to get this right. The idea for the book came about when we realised we all had something in common. This was that each of our grandmothers have experienced or are still experiencing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The more effort we put in led to a greater feeling of achievement as we know grandmothers would be very proud. We are very thankful for the great support received from friends, family and local businesses. For each copy sold a contribution towards the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation will be made. Over 50 books have been sold and we hope this number continues to grow. Remain in My Mind can be purchased from Kerry Book Shop(next door to Caballas Toy Store) or contact us through our Facebook or Instagram accounts. These social media accounts are found under the name ‘Remain in My Mind’. The cost of this unique book is €10 and we really appreciate each and every purchase. We hope you enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed creating it. Many Thanks, Erin Moss, Rachel Kilgallen and Kate Hennessy. Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me Thur 22nd – Sat 24th Feb @ 8pm

Written by playwright Frank McGuinness, this was inspired by the abduction of Brian Keenan taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s. Starring Simon Coury, Diarmuid De Faoite, Dara Devaney they tell the story of an American Doctor, an Irish journalist and an English Academic held hostage with little to unite them. Experience their stories of adventure and love, song, laughter and survival.

Private Peaceful

Wed 28th Feb @ 11am & 8pm, Thur 1st March Starring Shane O’Regan (Borstal Boy and Reality) this is a timely reminder of the heroic sacrifices that were made by those involved in World War I. From the author of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo's award-winning book, The play highlights the dreadful horrors of war while celebrating the joyfulness of life, in this not-to-be-missed, magnificent one-man theatre production.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Tralee gets ready for International Marathon Weekend (plus 5 & 10k) It is that time of the year, where runners of all abilities, start testing how their winter training is progressing, and start entering some long road races, preparing for the favoured Tralee International Marathon on March 18th With 4 races on the day there is something for everyone. 5 & 10k runs taking in the outskirts of Blennerville, Tralee Bay, and the Wetlands Centre. The marathon is a looped course taking in the streets of Tralee and the scenic roads of the Canal, the Kerries and Lohercannon. With participants coming from near and far the buzz about this year’s race is growing and the excitement. Returning runners continue to praise the atmosphere and volunteers from last year, here is some of their feed back. Chris... Dog Track will now open on Thurdays for Confirmations in March! Greyhound Racing in Tralee usually takes place every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday but this year the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium have decided to open two extra dates to cater for Confirmations as stadium manager Declan Dowling tells us “Due to many requests from parents in the Tralee area we have decided to race on Thursday March 1st and Thursday March 22nd to cater for repeat customers whose confirmations are falling on what is normally a non race day. Part of a great day out for Confirmation parties in Tralee is to either dine at the stadium or finish their day at the stadium. We didn’t want to leave any families that had planned on celebrating Confirmations with a night at the dogs disappointed by not being open so we have decided to cater for all and open on the Thursdays. “ With a large range of packages to suit all groups and budgets a fun night at the dogs is a very popular 8

option for Confirmation Day celebrations. Greyhound racing is one of those rare occasions that all the family can enjoy together. And the fact that the races take place every twelve minutes or so means that children, in particular, have plenty to keep them interested. It’s a great way to celebrate a Confirmation or Communion in the family. Mums and Dads can sit back and relax and enjoy a top class restaurant meal with drinks and betting service to the table, while the kids can enjoy special child-friendly restaurant menus at very reasonable prices. Or simply have a ball watching all the action and entertainment while enjoying a choice of food from the fast food outlet. There’s an option for everyone. Don’t forget the Confirmation child dines for FREE! For an extra special memory of a great Confirmation party, just let the stadium know at the time of booking and get a special shout-out from the race commentator - or you can

even have a race named to celebrate your Confirmation day! They have Restaurant packages priced to suit all budgets and also provide top class racing and entertainment that suits all ages. Says Declan “We’re a location with

a difference that provides a fun night out for all the family.” Gates will open each night at 6.30pm and they are now taking bookings for all groups sizes. You can contact the stadium directly on 061448055 for more information.

Jimmy takes 22k back to Kerry from winning streak An active grandad from Tralee, Jimmy, who scooped a tidy prize worth €22,000 on the National Lottery Winning Streak game show on RTE One on Saturday plans on doing a bit of travelling with his winnings. Jimmy Kelly won €12,000 in cash and a-once-in-a-lifetime holiday to the Florida Keyes on the show. He revealed he plans to spend some of his cash winnings on a trip to Prague in the Czech Republic with his wife Kathleen, and on a holiday to Greece in September to celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary. The lucky Kerryman is no stranger to a bit of good fortune but was still surprised at the reaction of his friends, family and community in Woodlands in Tralee to his appearance on the show. He said he was taken aback at the kindness of people in sending him cards, text messages and calling to his house to wish him good luck. Jimmy has won on the Lotto raffle on two occasions, winning €300 each time. He also won €17,000 on a local 12

lotto during his working day. He has a lucky streak as he also gifted someone a scratch card with a prize of €5,000 a few years ago. Jimmy and Kathleen have five adult children, Susan (44), Jeannette (43), Doreen (39), Karen (36) and Derek (34) who were all in the Winning Streak audience on Saturday. Jimmy Friday 23rd February 2018

was also cheered on by some of his 11 grandchildren. Jimmy is quite the proud granddad and says that his army of grandchildren are the “icing on his cake”. Jimmy is a keen golfer, playing at Killarney Golf and Fishing club and he is also a member of the clubs choir, who appeared on the show to

serenade Jimmy via video link. He also loans his voice to the local church choir and loves to get out of the house walking, gardening and painting. The winning ticket was bought from Mc Elligotts Supermarket, Oakpark, Tralee. Co Kerry. Pic: Mac Innes Photography.

Top Tips from Natalie Wedding Co-ordinator at The Heights Hotel Have Non-Negotiables – The First question I will ask all couples are your three non- negotiables or must haves from their wedding venue. This quickly allows you to decide whether the venue is right for you.

ONE WEDDING A DAY – Make sure that the venue you choose is strictly one wedding a day. This is your special day , the attention should be solely on you and your guests.

Questions – Ask as many questions as you like! No question is ever silly , chances are we have been asked them hundreds of times before.

Review from a Wedding Couple

Numbers of Guests and Availability of Dates- Before booking in to view your Venue make sure that if you have a set date, the venue is available. Also Be Realistic with your numbers when choosing a venue. Some Venues may not be suitable for a wedding with your number of guests. Your Wedding Co-ordinator – The Likelihood is you’re booking your venue 18-24 Months in advance so having a good relationship with your wedding coordinator is key. Trust is a big element in this relationship as they are planning your big day and will be there with you both until you say “ I do”

The Christmas season is now behind us and for couples who got engaged in 2017, now is the time to select a beautiful set of wedding rings for their wedding day and the rest of their lives. The 2018 wedding season is well under way, so what should brides and grooms look out for when selecting their rings? There is a huge array of wedding band styles out there, so your first step should be to visit your local jewellers to try on some. The jeweller will examine your engagement ring to establish if it is platinum, white gold, yellow gold, etc. You will have to match the metal. For example, if you have an 18ct white gold engagement ring, your wedding band must then also be made of 18ct gold. Mixing different metals can wear both rings out and is not advised. Once you know which metal is right for you, then the next important decision is the style of ring.

“Where do I begin?! There is so much to commend the Heights Hotel on. To begin with, we were overseas when we got engaged & when my sister viewed and recommended this hotel, from then onwards it got better and better. The staff, whether it was on reception or in reservations, always were courteous and professional with me, each & every time I rang/emailed them. I know I was one of many contacting them but I always felt my queries were dealt with promptly. Thank you! A special thank you to Natalie, she is superb at her job. Everything appeared so effortless in how she worked to accommodate all our requests & changes. Again, I know she had other weddings & events to organise but we definitely felt solely focused on whilst dealing with her. This is a credit to her as I know

plain one? Or maybe your engagement ring has an unusual shape and you will need to have a custom-made ring to fit in next to it? If your engagement ring has a halo or diamond set shoulders, you may wish to replicate the setting style on the wedding band. Once you have selected your wedding bands you will need to decide how you will personalise them with engraving. Also, if you are having a Roman Catholic ceremony, you will need a wedding coin for the Exchange of Gifts. Most jewellers will provide these extras free of charge.

organising and coordinating the wedding is a major responsibility to be given & she did an amazing job right up to the day and on the day itself. We had a great day, arrivals, seating, food etc was excellent & most of all we didn’t have any worries. I highly recommend Natalie Bader to organise anyone’s wedding, thank you Natalie!” Mary and Patrick got married December 16th 2017 Cork Road, Killarney, Co.Kerry. “I place this ring upon your hand“

Regardless of the style of rings you choose, it is very important to buy good quality as you will be wearing the rings for the rest of your life. So set the best budget you can and enjoy the process of ordering your wedding rings.

Choosing a Makeup Artist for your Wedding There are lots of different Makeup Artists out there and choosing the right one for you and your style is very important, especially if it’s an important event or a wedding. Pictures last forever and you don’t want to end up spending time and money only to end up disappointed. DO RESEARCH First and foremost, look up a few Makeup Artists in your area. Look at their work, look at their qualifications and look and their experience. If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/ She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist,

18

TRALEE ADVERTISER

it’s one day, pay a bit extra for better quality. On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit. HAVE A TRIAL If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT. There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/ she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want

Friday 23rd February 2018

a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability. LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/SUGGESTIONS They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have

spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them. If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return.

Honeymoon Tips The honeymoon is a muchneeded respite after months of wedding prep. For many couples, it’s also the trip of a lifetime — the first long, exotic trip you’ll take together. While it sounds heavenly, the task of honeymoon planning (on top of wedding planning) can get stressful. We talked to travel experts to get insider knowledge on how to plan a honeymoon that’s low on stress and big on savings.

1. Start Early to Get the Best Prices

Wondering when to book a honeymoon? The ideal time to book your honeymoon is six to eight months prior, especially if you’re planning to go to a specialized resort, as premium rooms book up early. 2. Work Together When it comes to wedding planning, dividing and conquering is often the best approach. Too often, if one person handles the planning, you end up with a trip that’s more tailored to his or her desires. Unless your spouse-to-be is uncommonly perceptive about your travel wishes and peeves, honeymoon planning should be a joint effort.

3. Don’t Copy Someone Else’s Honeymoon Itinerary

Wedding planning can be so overwhelming that it’s tempting to simply copy another couple’s honeymoon itinerary. They had a blast, right? Your pals may have loved that no-stress allinclusive resort, but you might find it tamps your adventurous spirit. Or maybe you’ve heard your parents reminisce about their honeymoon in Bermuda your whole life. Just because they’d like to revisit their ‘moon vicariously doesn’t mean it’s right for you. It’s okay to solicit advice from like-minded friends and family, but take it with the proverbial grain of salt. This is your big trip; tailor it to you and your fiancé.

4. Be Specific About What You Want When you think “exotic 20

TRALEE ADVERTISER

destination,” does that mean a luxury resort on an island renowned for its natural beauty? Or do you define it as a faraway foreign country where you don’t speak the language? The difference between your “relaxing” and “boring” isn’t always immediately clear. Talk it out with your fiancé and figure out what you both really want. And, according to Linda Dancer, of Honeymoons Inc., if you’re using a travel agent, a good one will know the right questions to ask to help figure it out.

5. Don’t Rely Entirely on Web Research

Starting your honeymoon planning with a Google search is perfectly fine, but don’t rely only on search engines. Sometimes reviews can paint a picture that doesn’t match reality, and it’s best to thoroughly vet your ideal destination by talking to friends and family who have been there, and/or a travel agent. According to Augerinos, “We won’t sell a destination unless one of us has been there personally. We like to think of ourselves as human Trip Advisors.” Instagram is also a great resource to see pics that real people have snapped of certain locations, and geotags make it that much easier to pinpoint amazing locations.

6. Consider Using a Travel Agent

If you want extra guidance planning your honeymoon, travel agents can come in handy. They have insider knowledge on deals and discounts and cultivate personal relationships with hoteliers, which can sometimes mean a room’s suddenly available in a booked-solid hotel. They also save you endless research time and can offer first-hand destination knowledge. “I like to say our service is threefold,” says Augerinos. “We help you choose the perfect destination with the right fit, we do all the planning and researching, and we provide clients service while they’re on their honeymoons. My job is not finished until my

Friday 23rd February 2018

clients return home.” 7. Set Aside an Appropriate Budget for the Honeymoon Weddings can get costly quickly, and it’s tempting to take it out of the honeymoon budget. But think about it: The typical wedding ceremony lasts six hours. How long is a honeymoon, on the other hand? Typically, it’s the honeymoon usually lasts 10 to 14 days. Which one do you think you’ll remember more? “It always scares me when a couple wants a seven-night luxury stay with an ocean view and can only afford five nights in a two- to three-star hotel. You just know they’re going to hate it,” says Dancer.

8. You Don’t Have to Leave for Your Honeymoon Straight After Your Wedding

It happens in movies: The happy couple floats strait from their reception to the airport, en route to their honeymoon. But the pros advise giving yourself some time to catch your breath between the ceremony and the big trip. You may have had a little too much to drink the night before, and you’ll definitely be exhausted, so give yourself a chance to rest. “Leave on a Monday or even Tuesday following a Saturday wedding,” says Augerinos. Or, wait as long as you need—maybe for after a big work presentation settles down or when you can get the best weather in your preferred destination.

9. Balance Adventure with Relaxation

For most couples, a mix of adventure and relaxation makes for the perfect honeymoon. You’ll want to explore new lands and take part in exciting activities together, whether that means pony trekking through the rain forest or exploring Paris on foot. But you’ll also need time to recharge before getting back to reality. Be sure not to wear yourselves out—or give yourselves an opportunity to get bored.

10. Don’t Wing It

types, it’s tempting to choose a destination, book a hotel for the first night, and take it from there. In fact, that may be how you always travel together. But, remember, your honeymoon isn’t like any other vacation. It’s the pause between one of the biggest— and busiest—moments in your life and the business of navigating a new reality together. Give yourself a break by going with a basic structure—booking your hotel rooms for the whole stay— then make room for adventure by choosing activities on the fly.

11. Sample the Culture

Don’t wait to arrive at your dream destination to give it a taste. Go to a restaurant or whip up a specialty from the region to really immerse yourself in the culture while you plan. Or turn to your Netflix account and cozy up together with a movie that shows off the location’s scenery or culture instead. You’ll be daydreaming about your honeymoon every day leading up to it!

12. Post Your Plans to Social Media

Your honeymoon will be filled with Insta-worthy moments, but the planning process is worth a post on your social network, too. Once you have selected your honeymoon spot, post a status on Facebook, or do a callout for recommendations. Not only will it feel great to share the excitement with your loved ones, you may even get some insider advice from others who have previously visited the area.

13. Schedule Surprises

While it is great to work side-by-side with your fiancé to plan your honeymoon, try to sneak a few surprises for him in there, too! Pricey or full-day activities are best to discuss as a duo, but adding a couple’s massage into the mix or scheduling a special dinner unbeknownst to your new hubby is the perfect way to add a bit of excitement to your vacation.

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! HAPPY FRIDAY!

Can we believe that it’s the last Friday of February already? Like what? How did this happen!

Because it’s the end of February, I’m going to do my February Favourites this week! February was a short one, but there’s still some new favourites I managed to use/find! LA ROCHE POSAY DUO+ I rediscovered my love for the La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ this month. I actually got the one with SPF 30 in it. You put this on in the morning after cleansing before your moisturiser. It unclogs pores, and corrects imperfections and marks on the skin. I find it really helps with skin texture. It’s perfect for oily acne prone skin. ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS BLUSH TRIO (PEACHY LOVE) I love love loveeeeee this blush trio, I got it before Christmas on the Anastasiabeverlyhills. co.uk site, its 30 pounds and free shipping woooooo! ABH products never let me down, always so reliable and great quality!

KYLIE COSMETICS RED VELVET LIP KIT I have been seriously feeeeeeelin red lips this month. They’re such a statement and I feel like you can just do a really natural look and then add a red lip and BAM, you’re glam! My current favourite red lip is the Kylie Cosmetics Red Velvet, velvet lip kit. The velvet formula is SO nice and not drying and LASTS HOURS even eating and drinking! PS: The only place to buy Kylie Cosmetics is www.kyliecosmetics.com , anywhere else is fake.

WET N WILD PHOTOFOCUS FOUNDATION If you follow me on Instagram @rebecca.shortt you already no that February was the month I fell in love… with this foundation!!! I admit, I was sceptical - it’s only €6. But wow was I proved wrong. It is BEAUTIFUL. The coverage is amazing, it photographs amazingly and it doesn’t feel heavy or cakey on my skin. Oh and did I mention it’s €6??? Do me a favour, go into Costello’s Pharmacy Tralee and try for yourself! (pick up the Precious Petals Highlighter from my January favourites while you’re at it too!)

BEAUTY BLENDER Along with my Effaclar Duo, I also rediscovered my Beauty Blender. I’ve mentioned this before plenty of times, but the Original Beauty Blender is without a doubt the BEST beauty sponge I’ve used. I love it on days when I’m feeling dry.

PENNEYS HOOPS Not makeup or skincare related but a favourite all the same, I am a hoop gal. I just love them, particularly big thin hoops. I actually get asked quite often where I get my hoops and Penneys currently stock them for like €2, otherwise Claire’s accessories in Manor always have a good selection, you’re welcome. (pictured below is the penneys hoops and the red lip I talked about above) So that’s it for this week! Hope you all enjoyed this week’s light hearted post! Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Rebecca Shortt Makeup, TWITTER: @Bexblah INSTAGRAM: @Rebecca.shortt

I hope you all have an amazing week!

NATURAL STEPS TO A HEALTHY MIND We all know how important a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise is to our overall wellbeing but from time to time we may need some extra help especially when it comes to supporting a “HEALTHY MIND” Some of the herbal remedies traditionally used in maintaining a healthy mind are: • “PASSIFLORA” A good choice for anyone coping with anxiety or if you find it difficult to relax the mind, (may also help with poor sleeping patterns) and will not cause drowsiness. Take 20 drops twice daily. • “RHODIOLA” Poor memory? Stressed? Chronic fatigue? RHODIOLA, now a well known herbal remedy may help to bring balance and calm back to your daily life. Along with the herbal remedies here are some supplements worth checking out also!

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

• “MAGNESIUM” A very popular choice to help combat anxiety related symptoms and poor stress tolerance also beneficial for tense tight muscles due to stress. • “ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS” Omega 3,6 and 9 oils help support heart, brain and eye health. A very important choice to help maintain healthy cognitive and memory function. • “B VITAMINS” are also very important in the quest to maintain a healthy balanced mind, some good food sources are nuts such as almonds, seeds, wholegrains, eggs and fish! If these are not in your diet to any major degree you need to look at a good quality B complex supplement such as SOLO High Potency B complex or VIRIDIAN do an excellent B complex which also includes MAGNESIUM. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy

FITNESS!

HELLO STRONG PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK AND ENJOYED LAST WEEK’S POST ABOUT BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS! This week I’m going to talk about the negative effects of eating too little and cutting out carbs on your body! To effectively lose weight, you must burn more calories than you eat. Cutting your calorie intake is often the best way to shed pounds. However, eating too few calories can contribute to negative side effects. Your body needs a set amount of calories to function, so sometimes if you’re not reaching your goals it can actually be because you’re not eating enough! Eating too few calories can slow down your body’s metabolism, making it more difficult to shed pounds and fat. Eating too few calories, can cause nausea, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue and gallstone formation.

Now onto ‘Cutting Carbs’... *eye roll* Your body uses carbohydrates as its main source of readily available energy. It can use protein and fat to make fuel, but this process takes far longer and is much less efficient. In other words, your muscles, organs and brain love the stuff. When you eat carbs, they’re either used immediately for energy, or they’re stored as glycogen in your muscle cells and liver. Ninety-five per cent of us will have tried cutting carbs before, and within this 95%, almost all of us will have seen weight loss in the first week or so. While this seems epic, don’t get carried away – because weight loss isn’t always fat loss. When you cut carbs from your diet, your body turns to its stored carbohydrates. At any one time, you can have as much as 500 grams of stored glycogen, and each gram of glycogen holds around three grams of water with it. This means if your body has to use up all its glycogen for energy because

you’re not eating carbs, you can lose up to two kilos within a few days. But this is not fat loss. You’ll also typically be cranky and tired whilst torturing yourself. Think about it – your typical breakfast might include toast, cereals or orange juice, with sandwiches, wraps or bagels at lunch, plus sugary coffees, chocolate bars and fruit throughout the day, then some kind of pasta, potato or rice with dinner. That’s a lot of carbohydrates. By suddenly cutting these out, you’ll put yourself into a calorie deficit where you’re consuming fewer calories than you burn – and it’s creating a calorie deficit that causes weight loss, not the fact you’re not eating carbs. So you’re actually better off going to a PT who knows about nutrition and macros, calculating how much your body needs daily, and calculating how much calories you need

daily (you’ll more than likely be pleasantly surprised). Then you can divide those calories into Protein, Carbs and Fat. Cutting out any food group will cause ‘weight loss’ because you’re creating a calorie deficit. BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU’LL LOSE FAT.

If you follow me on Instagram @rebeccashorttfit, you’ll know that last week I didn’t get the chance to update my measurements. So they’ll be updated again next week!

SO PROUD OF OUR BOYS AND GIRLS WHO JUST COMPLETED OUR FIRST “IRISH WATER SAFETY COURSE” OF 2018

...They passed with flying colours! Catriona Cantillon, Manager of Zero Gravity at Manor West Hotel had this to say "The students who had their exams on Saturday last and who thankfully, passed with flying colours will be awarded their Rescue 1 certificates from Irish Water Safety (IWS) . This achievement has them half way to being fully trained Lifeguards. We were exceptionally proud of their hard work during this 6 week Safety ,Rescue and Endurance course. They had a huge amount of homework which had to be completed in the pool and signed off on by the club here as it was being done. Their tutor Mr. Padraig O’ Mahony put in 100% to each individual , not only to educate and train them, but also to motivate them in getting their homework completed to ensure their success."

WHERE’S THE BEEF?

This week is all about Beef in Croí restaurant as we host our “ Magic of Beef“ night, a great night in store as master butcher Peter Curran from Ardfert will join myself, and we break down & cook all ten cuts of beef.(delighted to say it was fully booked out!)

FOR THE TZATZIKI (makes 1 1/4 cups): • • • • • • • • •

1 medium cucumber 1 1/2 teaspoons Sea salt, divided 2 to 3 medium lemons 1/2 clove garlic 1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup fresh dill 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

FOR THE KOFTA: 1/2 medium onion 1 (2-inch) piece of ginger, peeled 2 cloves garlic 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves 1 pound ground beef (75% lean/25% fat) 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1 small pinch red pepper flakes Vegetable oil, for oilig the grill Naan or pita, for serving

MAKE THE TZATZIKI: Peel and grate the cucumber on the large holes of a grater. Place in a medium bowl, toss with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt, and let sit for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, finely zest the lemons on a Microplane until you have 1 tablespoon. Transfer to a medium bowl. Juice half of a lemon and add 1 tablespoon of the juice to the bowl. Grate the garlic on the fine holes of the box grater or Microplane and add to the bowl of lemon zest. Finely chop the dill and and mint and add to the bowl of lemon zest. Add the yogurt, oil, remaining 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper and mix to combine. Using your hands, squeeze the excess liquid out of the cucumber. (This is an important step, otherwise you will end up with watery tzatziki.) Add the cucumber to the yogurt mixture and mix to combine. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Make the kofta while the tzatziki is chilling.

FOR THE KOFTA: Grate the onion on the large holes of a grater and place 1/4 cup of it in a large bowl. Grate the ginger on a Microplane and place 1 tablespoon of it in the bowl. Grate the garlic on the Microplane and add it the bowl. Finely chop the parsley and mint and add to the bowl.Add the ground beef, salt, and spices and mix quickly and gently with your hands to combine (do not overwork the meat or it will be tough). Form into 30 (2-inch balls) and place on a baking sheet. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.Heat a grill pan lightly coated with vegetable oil on medium-high heat. Add the meatballs in batches. Do not overcrowd the pan, or the grill pan will cool down, the meatballs won’t brown properly, and they will stick and break. Grill, turning occasionally, until brown all over and cooked through, about 6 minutes. Remove to a serving platter. To finish, lightly grill the pitas or naan in the grill pan for about a minute to toast and warm through. Top with kofta and some tzatziki. Recipes by

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A PIRATE WALKED INTO A BAR

A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said : ‘Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. What happened? You look terrible.’ ‘What do you mean?’ said the pirate, ‘I feel fine.’ Bartender: ‘What about the wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.’ Pirate: ‘Well, we were in a battle and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I’m fine now.’ Bartender: ‘Well, ok, but what about that hook? What happened to your hand?’ Pirate: ‘We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off. I got fitted with a hook. I’m fine, really...’ Bartender: ‘What about that eye patch?’ Pirate: ‘Oh, one day we were at sea and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up and one of them Cr*#pped in my eye.’ Bartender: ‘You’re kidding, you lost an eye just from bird crap?’ Pirate: ‘It was my first day with the hook.

A COUPLE HAD TO GIVE THEIR TWIN BOYS UP FOR ADOPTION...

One was sent to Mexico and was given the name Juan. His new parents sent the adoption agency a picture every year as he grew older, and they shared the photo with the birth parents. The other boy was adopted by an Egyptian couple. They named him Amal. No pictures from Egypt ever arrived. One day the birth dad remarked to his wife, “I wish we could see Amal one time.” His wife replied, “they are identical twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal.” 34

“BUT WHY?” ASKED MIKE. “VALENTINE’S DAY JOKE”

Mike walked into a post office just before Valentine’s day, he couldn’t help noticing a middleaged, balding man standing in a corner sticking “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. Then the man got out a bottle of Channel perfume from his pocket and started spraying scent over the envelopes.By now Mike’s curiosity had got the better of him, and so I asked the man why he was sending all those cards. The man replied, “I’m sending out 500 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asked Mike.“I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replied

I WAS AT THE BAR THE OTHER NIGHT AND OVERHEARD THREE VERY HEFTY WOMEN TALKING.

I was at the bar the other night and overheard three very hefty women talking. Their accent, lilting and song-like, appeared to be Scottish, so I approached and asked, “Hello, are you three lassies from Scotland?” One of them angrily screeched, “It’s Wales, Wales you bloody idiot!” So I apologized and replied, “I am so sorry. Are you three whales from Scotland?” And that’s the last thing I remember.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... The importanceoverof hearing care the phone or listening Consider all the sounds that you hear you every day - a child laughing, a bird singing, a friend chatting, or a great song on the radio - it is this symphony of sounds that makes life richer. Of all the five senses, our hearing is perhaps the most precious. If we lose it, we lose contact with the people we love and the world around us. You look after your teeth and eyes with regular check-ups – do the same for your ears! Hearing is an easy thing to take for granted. Occasionally we might miss a few words, but in general we move around effortlessly in everyday life, talking to one another, chatting

to the TV, without paying it a second thought. Things are not nearly as easy with a hearing loss. When hearing loss occurs, a simple thing like following a conversation in a restaurant, or hearing the doorbell or telephone can become a real issue. You may start to experience all sorts of emotions – from worry to sadness and loneliness. You may also feel tired and irritable from having to concentrate just to hear what people are saying. Left unattended, hearing loss can ultimately lead to feelings of isolation and depression. Hearing loss can creep up so slowly that the person affected is often the last one to know. In fact, family members, friends or colleagues are likely to spot the problem before you do. Watch out for the common signs: At work: Do you find yourself straining to keep up with conversations in a busy office? Socially: Do you feel that people are mumbling and sometimes need to ask them

Grow: supporting Positive mental health

GROW promotes positive mental health, personal growth and recovery from all kinds of mental illness. Are you struggling with your mental or emotional wellbeing or know someone who is? GROW is Ireland’s largest community-based mental health organisation and has been helping people on the road to mental health recovery for almost 50 years. GROW has its origins in Australia and commenced in Ireland in 1969. GROW has a long history of promoting positive mental health and recovery in communities nationwide. GROW holds 120 peersupport groups across Ireland each week. GROW groups follow a practical, 12-step programme and provide mutual help and support to anyone experiencing mental health difficulties or struggling with their mental wellbeing. Meetings are free and confidential. The focus is ongoing peersupport, mutual encouragement and understanding – people supporting others on the 36

journey to mental health recovery. GROW is also about breaking social isolation, fostering social connectedness, outreach and friendship. GROW’s slogan is “you alone can do it, but you can’t do it on your own”. Besides weekly support meetings, GROW also holds free community education, workplace, carer and young adult programmes. BENEFITS A 2016 outcomes-based report on GROW’s recovery programme looked at the impacts, benefits and changes to GROW members. The results show that: • 46 per cent of GROW members had no relapse of symptoms in the past year. • Over 50 per cent said they were coping well or very well. • 17 per cent of members had never been hospitalised for mental health issues, while a further 68 per cent were not Friday 23rd February 2018

hospitalised in the past year. • 89 per cent of members were optimistic about the future. Research conducted by Trinity College Dublin in 2017 also examined the transformative power of GROW’s peer-support programme in assisting recovery from mental illness. The research, published in May, featured indepth interviews with 26 people who went through GROW’s programme of peer support recovery. The researchers found that while medical treatment and mental health professionals can be a vital start for some people’s recovery, mental health

problems can also be resolved through peer and community support and everyday social interactions. To discover more about GROW and GROW meetings nationwide, phone GROW’s infoline on 1890 474 474 visit the GROW website – www.grow.ie or email info@ grow.ie

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Come and hear Sean sing (for the first time !)

The award winning Light Opera Society Tralee will be staging the hilarious Little Shop of Horrors in Siamsa in March. The show features a cast of talented young singers and actors, including the well known Jack Healy from Killarney. The not so young but equally talented Sean Lyons of Tralee will be making his musical debut. Sean is no stranger to the stage and is well known as an M.C. and for readings of his award winning poetry. He will, however, be singing in public for the first time in the show. Now that’s entertainment! The Little Shop of Horrors runs from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th March at Siamsa Tíre.

Answer If you are not happy with an item you have bought online, you should always contact the trader first to make a complaint. If you are not satisfied with their response, you may be able to get help. If your complaint is against a trader here in Ireland, you can contact the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission for advice. If the trader is in another EU member state, you can contact the European Consumer Centre Ireland (ECC Ireland). ECC Ireland may contact the trader and try to resolve your dispute. If this is not successful, ECC Ireland can advise you on other options.

You can also use the Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform. The ODR platform is operated by the European Commission for use by consumers living in the EU. It aims to help consumers and traders settle online disputes without the need to go to court. You use the platform to find a neutral third party (called a dispute resolution body) to handle your dispute. You don’t have to pay when you submit a complaint using the ODR platform. However, a dispute resolution body may ask you to pay a fee if it agrees to handle your case. When a dispute resolution body agrees to handle your case it will tell you what the rules are, including how much you have to pay. The outcome can depend on the type of dispute resolution body and their rules and procedures. Some decisions may not be binding on the trader. If you disagree with the outcome you might be able to appeal the outcome or take your case to court.

TORQUING CARS! DRIVER’S FURY OVER “RIDICULOUS” £70 PARKING FINE GIVEN TO HIM AFTER SNOW HIDES PERMIT ON WINDSCREEN

A driver has been left furious over a “ridiculous” £70 parking fine given to him after his permit was hidden by snow on his car’s windscreen. Ollie Claxton said he couldn’t help but laugh when the notice arrived in the post and he realised why he was fined. Had the Derby City Council parking warden cleared the snow they would have seen the permit, he added. Mr Claxton, a BBC radio presenter, told the Derby Telegraph that he is fighting the fine and hopes to have it thrown out.

WE’RE ‘BUYING 2,200 IMPORTS A WEEK... WHILE NEW-CAR REGISTRATIONS ARE DOWN ALMOST 5PC’

It could well come to pass this year that we’ll buy as many, if not more, used imports than new cars. That’s good news for thousands who see themselves saving a lot of money on imports. But, on a broader scale, the relentless growth of used UK buying is raising a number of key questions. What if the buying continues, or increases, at this rate for the next two or three years? What if used import numbers hit 125,000130,000? What if new-car buying drops under 100,000? What are the ramifications for you? For example, what will your UK trade-in be worth? Where will you sell it? Who will buy it? Will most of us give up on owning a new car? Will it bother you that you’re bringing in older, dirtier cars, especially diesels, from the UK? And where does it all leave our emissions targets? How will reduced volumes of new cars impact on jobs in the industry here? These are obvious questions. There are many more and they’ll grow because the overhang from Brexit could extend for a long time. How do we cope with that? Could/should the Government be sourcing counter measures to fend off purchase of older diesels, for example? A scrappage scheme? We’re already buying 2,200 imports a week while new-car registrations are down almost 5pc. The SIMI quarterly review by economist Jim Power forecasts we will buy almost 115,000 used imports (up 20pc) this year but only manage to register around 118,000 new models (down 10pc). That is a narrow gap. And if you take out the level of ‘pre-regging’ (cars registered but not sold as such) my earlier premise is not far off: 4,500 new cars were ‘pre-registered’ in the last day of January alone to meet sales targets. Maybe we are already buying more imports than new cars in real terms. It’s probably not the right time to raise these questions and I risk being accused of being pro-industry. But the import challenge looks like lasting longer than many experts foresaw and we have to ask if it’s going to be a case of short-term gain versus possible long-term pain. Eddie Cunningham .(.Indo Motoring )

MY BUDGET IS €1,000 INCLUDING TRADE-IN. WHAT SHOULD I BUY?

My circumstances are that I drive a 2001 Fiat Punto with 101,000 miles (not km) on the clock. I drive 12/13,000 miles a year. My previous car was 1993 Fiat Uno. I’ve had the current car for eight or nine years and before that the Uno for eight years. Budget €1,000 including trade-in. I have no requirement for seats other than one at the front for most miles, after that one at the rear for my grandson and one at the front for occasional passenger. What should I be looking at for the next 10 years? ...Tom Aidan and Eddie: Your best bet is a well-minded Punto. You seem to like and have had a good record with the Fiats. Your budget is small - no disrespect - so take the greatest care in the world before you buy. The problem is you will probably have to buy privately and that can be risky. Might be worth checking with a couple of dealers to see if they have something old coming in as a trade-in. ou don’t need us to tell you to be careful. A lot can go wrong, or be just about to, with a car of that age and value. (Indo Motoring )

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TIME FOR ALL IN LADIES FOOTBALL TO PULL TOGETHER: What is going on in Kerry Ladies football? Firstly as someone who is involved with the FAI at a senior level of the women’s game I know the challenges there is in the female side of the game compared with the male side. This is all the way from volunteers to coaches to funding. The one area where there is no shortage is of players. Girl’s playing soccer has never been at a higher level and I am sure football is the same. So the bone fides of those who put themselves forward for positions on the Kerry Ladies Board, albeit after the first AGM failed to fill the positions, must be accepted and they had their ideas on how to progress. Now I don’t know Jonathan Griffin, the Kerry Ladies minor manager or how he conducts himself in the role except to say he has once again gotten a very good performance and a win over Tipperary in the Munster Ladies Minor Championship after a tough week. So he must be doing something right and he seems to have the support of the squad plus at least a number of the County Board. So even if the newly elected officers felt he was not the man of the job, which is their right, then surely it would have made more sense to call him into a meeting. There are now media reports of ‘issues’ regarding compliance and procedures while there is also an investigation into the possibility of an illegal player being played in the Senior win against Mayo. Hopefully this is not the case as it would mean the Kerry Ladies would lose the points. But with all the upheaval sometimes things like this can slip through the cracks. Now the Chairman and Secretary have stepped down after only coming into the positions in that EGM at the end of January. Procedure would be that nominations would be sought before the next County Board meeting. I would hope that some of the experienced persons on the Board would step up to take the top roles that carry the most responsibility – that of Chair and Secretary while looking for others to come in to the other positions.

48

TRALEE ADVERTISER

And also its time for clubs to act responsibility and try and get people onto the County Board, but these people must want to do it for the right reasons, not just because they are being pushed. This situation might also be the time for the discussion of the bringing in of the Ladies games under the umbrella of the County Board. In soccer this has happened at National level where there is a Women’s National Committee and the Chair of that Committee now has a seat on the FAI Board. Another example is that Cork City Women’s team is now under the Cork City FC brand with all the access that brings to kit deals, sponsorship and administrative support while still enjoying their own identity. Why not try something similar in Kerry? For the sake of sports fans in the county and especially those of Ladies games hopefully all of this will be resolved. On the field it was a good week for the minors as we said and especially for Hannah O’Donoghue who starred in that win. Hannah also signed for Cork City Ladies this week which is a huge opportunity for her. It was not as good a day for the Senior Ladies as they went down to Monaghan in their re-arranged fixture. It was a close game but a two point loss was not what they were hoping for. PROCEDURE TO CHANGE THE WAY CAPTAINS ARE NAMED: There will be a new procedure in naming the u17 hurling and football captains going forward. From now on the captain will be chosen by the County Chair, the management team and the Liaison officer. This is being done in this new younger age group as some players might not be up to the extra responsibility of captain. One wonders is this the start of a change in procedure for naming all captains. Is the captain of a Kerry team something that should go to the best person for the job or be the gift of the team that wins a Championship, as it is now? For most I would expect that it would be the former. ON THE SENIOR FRONT: Friday 23rd February 2018

Kerry had no time to lick their wounds or feel sorry for themselves following their League defeat away in Monaghan. They will take on Galway this Sunday in Austin Stacks Park at 2.30pm. This is a vital game for Kerry if they want to maintain their push for a League final spot. The Kerry hurlers are up to second half way through their Division 2A campaign thanks to an easy 1-23 to 0-10 points away to Kildare. The Kerry U15 & U16 Hurling Squads travelled to the Kildare GAA Centre of Excellence at Hawkfield in Newbridge on Sunday to face their Lilywhite counterparts. Despite the poor weather conditions, spectators were treated to two entertaining contests. Kildare provided stiff opposition but the boys of the Kingdom prevailed in both games. Both teams then attended the Kildare v Kerry National League game at St. Conleth’s Park. Kerry kick off the double header at the Austin Stack Park when they throw-in against Meath on Sunday at 12.30. GAA SHORTS: This publication wished Tralee CBS all the best in their Corn Ui Mhuiri all Kerry final which takes place in the Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney on Saturday. Well done to the four Kerry players who were part of the UCD Sigerson Cup success including Jack Barry from Na Gaeil. The Tralee IT hurlers will take on NUI Maynooth in the semi-finals of the Third Level University Ryan Cup competition. The weekend of action takes place at the Mallow GAA Complex. TRALEE PLAYERS DOMINATE THE U17 LEAGUE OF IRELAND SQUAD: The new League of Ireland soccer season will begin next month. The 15’s are in training with the squad to be announced next week. This week it was the u17’s squad that was unveiled by Darren Aherne and his management team. 7 of the players from last year are available again this season but there are some players who would have been potential starters but are unavailable including Sean McGrath

who has signed for Limerick FC and others who are on the verge of signing across channel. The 17’s squad has 9 players from the Park – Paddy O’Rourke, David Oba, John Carmody, Jordan Barry, JR Tsikato, Padraig McCannon, Seb Vasiu, James Rusk and Leon Shalemba. There are 4 from Tralee Dynamos – Nathan Gleeson, David Rogers, Junior Ankomah and Patrick Dowling. Inter Kenmare, Killorglin, Mastergeeha and Killarney Athletic are also represented on the squad while there are three players from outside the League from Abbeyfeale United. The u17’s League will kick off on March 18th and the u15’s on March 27th. OSCAR TRAYNOR SQUAD GETTING READY FOR SLIGO: Kerry have a tough away draw in the next round of the Oscar Traynor competition, which is the Inter League competition for the Junior Soccer League. The will face Sligo/Leitrim in the Showgrounds on March 3rd with the kick-out at 7.30pm. TRALEE DYNAMOS NEWS: The Academy continues to grow and almost 50 youngsters braved the elements last Friday night and put in performances that delighted the coaches. The Academy continues at the Tralee IT Astro this Friday from 6 to 7pm. The u15’s put in the best performance in the club this week as they held Division 1 leaders Ballyhar to a 3-3 draw. The result was even better at the previously unbeaten side raced into an early 2-0 lead. But goals from Danny Burke 2 and Sean Dillane cemented Dynamos second place in a tough League. Under 12 Cup: The B side were knocked out of the cup having been beaten by Killorglin A team on Saturday. Mohammad was on hand to score Dynamos goal and no doubt Coach Alan will be well pleased with his side’s effort on the day. PARK’S HAPPY LIFE: It was a great weekend for St Brendan’s Park with their Youths and u14’s progressing to the latter stages of their National Cups. In the Last 16 of the FAI Youth’s Cup Park FC defeated Conn Rangers 3-2 while the u14’s saw off Kells Blackwater 7-6 on penalties after a 3-3 draw against Kells Blackwater. In the Youths the Park advanced to the next round with a deserved victory over a strong Mayo side. JR Tshikota put the home side ahead at Christy Leahy Park and the same player doubled their lead in 30 minutes. 2 became three on 40 minutes thanks to Jordan Barry’s goal. The visitors pulled one back from a contested free kick late on and then on the 90th minute they got a second but the Park saw out the game and will now be away to either Freebooters of Kilkenny or Aisling Annacotty Limerick. Park prevails on penalties: This St Brendan’s Park team could have

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER been forgiven for not looking forward to this penalty shoot-out in the National Cup win over Kells Blackwater. Spot kicks have not been kind to them in the past but Saturday was their day and after a nail biting finale they are through to the Last 8 of the 14’s National Cup. They certainly did it the hard way as they had to come from behind three times to take the game to penalties. The Park created the best of the early chances but the visitors were well in the game and never left the Tralee side settle on the ball. Kells had the wind in the first half and played with a tall centre forward but the Park defence stood firm and the game was scoreless at half time. But that soon changed. Kells took the lead early in the half but their lead only last three minutes. Kieran O’Connor levelled with a cracking free kick from distance. The visitors went back in front after 18 minutes but the Park boys again raised their game and got the equaliser they deserved, even if it was late on! Colin Doody’s pinpoint corner was met by the head of Cianan Cooney to send the game into extra time. Again in extra time Kells went ahead just before the break but buoyed on by a big home support the Park came again and Messiah Chirwa and Doody combined to set up Cillian Cooney who showed coolness beyond his year to place an unstoppable shot past the visiting keeper. And so onto the penalties – 10 brave Park players stood up to the challenge scoring 7 and with Liam Carmody saving 2 it was St Brendan’s Park that was celebrating on and off the field at the end of a titanic struggle. SWIMMERS ENJOY A NICE WINTERS DAY: While the weather has been a spoiler to many sports last Sunday was one of the good days. 34 swimmers headed to Fenit in perfect conditions for the latest of the winters swims. While it was still cold – 4c and water temperature of 6c those who were brave enough really enjoyed their dip in the water. Winter swimming continues every Sunday morning at 11am. VOLUNTEERS DESERVE THEIR TIME IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The Camogie Volunteer of the Year Awards are a great initiative and from a Kerry and Tralee point of view congratulations to Carmel O’Shea- Maloney who has been named as one of those honoured. Carmel is a Chair of the camogies section of the Parnells club and was described on their Facebook page as “at the heart and soul of their camogie club”. AT THE DOGS: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there is the two semi-finals of the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic plus a top class supporting card. Including this are

rounds of the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial Trial Stake plus a number of supporting 12 dog stakes. Racing starts on Saturday afternoon at 2.12pm and on Saturday night there are a number of 12 dog sweeps in conjunction with the upcoming GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic Final which is on Friday March 2nd. Action on the coursing field turns to the Irish Cup which takes place at the Greenmount Racecourse next weekend. With the meeting this year coming only two weeks after the National meeting many of the dogs that got to the finals there are not able to run again. Coursing fans will be hoping that more success comes to Kerry as the curtain comes down on the season. KERRY MOTOR CLUB SUCCESS: Kerry Motor Club members prepared for the forthcoming Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry by scoring impressive results on Sunday’s Nenagh Rally in County Tipperary the opening round of the locally sponsored Top Part West Coast Rally Championship. April’s Circuit of Kerry is round two of the popular series as well as being the second round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. First Kerry Motor Club members over the finish line on Sunday were former Kerry Winter Rally winners Mike Quinn and Tony Healy. The Ford Escort Mk2 crew finished an impressive 13th overall and were second in the over two-litre class. Their performance earned them the Top Part drive of the day awards. Circuit of Kerry deputy clerk of the course Eoin Duffin and Kerry Motor Club PRO Mike Cleary were 18th overall and fourth in the same class as Quinn. Tralee’s Darren Young and with Ardfert’s Pat Lawlor on the notes scored an impressive win in the 1600cc front-wheel drive class in their Honda Civic. The Abbeydorney / Tralee pairing of Ger O’Brien and John Liston were fourth in their class in another Ford Escort MK2. Local co-driver Denny Greaney was second in his class alongside Cork based driver DJ Browne in a Citroen C2. Former Kerry Winter Rally clerk of the course, Jakes Kelly, acted as Motorsport Ireland safety officer on the event. The Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally takes place on April 8 and entry forms and regulations will be issued in the coming days. A unique rolling loop system means some of the stages will be visited two or three times, as a result competitors will face 11 special stages, a record number of tests for national rallies in recent years. In total the route will comprise of 110kms of timed stages over classic and demanding Dingle Peninsula roads. UCD TAKE THE HONOURS AGAINST WARRIORS: Tralee Warriors came up just short as they went down 86-83 away to UCD Marian. The Tralee side will

look back on this as a game they could have won but made too many turn-overs. The home side led early on but the visitors closed the gap to 2 points 24-22 at the end of the first quarter. Up to the half and the game was still tight with just 6 points in the difference as UCD continued to lead. The margin stayed the same as the sides entered the final quarter with the game in the balance. The Warriors closed the gap but an ankle injury pickled up by Pemberton was a big blow going down the stretch. Free throws had won the previous game for the Tralee side but on this occasion they went against them and Marian held on for what could be a vital win at the end of the season. The relentless Super League schedule continues for the Warriors next Saturday night when they face the team now in second place on the table, Griffith College Swords Thunder, in what promises to be another stern test. The Warriors will be hoping that Trae Pemberton’s injury is not as bad as first feared and he will take his place to orchestrate affairs at the Complex next Saturday night. A bumper crowd is expected at the home of the Warriors with tip off at 7.00pm ST BRENDAN’S NEWS: In the Lee Strand Boys u14C St Brendan’s defeated Caherciveen 37-18. The Tralee side raced into an early lead leading at the end of the first quarter by double scores 12-6. St Brendan’s took further control in the second half and led 21-12 at the half. Caherciveen fought back in the third quarter by the home side were always just a number of baskets better and extended their lead into the final quarter to take an easy win in the end. In other results in the u14 Division 1 St Brendan’s defeated St Bridget’s 57-12 while in the u12 Division 1 the Tralee side were 43-20 winner over TK Bobcats. In the Academy Girls Division 1 Tralee Imperials B were 8-9 winners over St Brendan’s. TRALEE PARNELL’S NEWS: Tralee Parnells Easter Camp 26 March: The Easter Camp takes place from Monday 26th February to Wednesday the 28th of March, 10 am to 1 pm. Cost is €25 per child. These camps are very much enjoyed by the children that participate, a great way for boys and girls to improve and reinforce the skills of the game. Always a great camp with fantastic coaches so text 0851355566 to book a place. Well done to Carmel on her Camogie Volunteer of the Award – see earlier piece in this column. Academy u6 to u12 Every Tuesday – this continues on Tuesdays at the Sports Complex from 6pm costing e2 per child. possible. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was a no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,19 and 27. The next jackpot will be e6300. There was another great turn-out for the Academies and all ages are showing great improvement due to the work they are putting in while the under age are preparing for their competitions. The minors began their season with an away win over Kilcummin in a game where they scored 7-07 but conceded 6-09!! The Seniors game against Na Gaeil was called off as no pitch was available. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: The Seniors took on Na Gaeil in Round 4 of the Coiste Tra Li League in a game that was switched to John Mitchels. They led 0-06 to 0-04 at the half and when Gavin O’Brien scored a goal the gap was out to 6 points. Two further points were added and even a late goal was not enough to give Na Gaeil anything from the game. Their final game in this competition takes place next Sunday 25th when we host Ballymac in Strand Road @ 12.30 The minors were beaten in the first round of the Coiste Chiaraí league when going down to Churchill in Churchill on Saturday last on a score line of 1-16 to 1-11. The club’s Strictly Club Dancing was launched with the big night being March 16th in the Brandon Hotel. Junior Blues: After the huge success of the Juvenile Academy last year we are pleased to announce that we will be back on Sunday, March 4th at 11a.m. The Ladies teams all trained over the mid-term break ahead of their competitions. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,19,23 and 27. ON THE GREEN: At Castleisland in the Singles Stableford Denis Galvin took the win from Declan Murphy and Mike Brosnan. In the Spring League the top 4 teams are Team G 71, Team B 68, Team H 66 and Team F 64. The top 4 qualify for the semi-final match play. Tralee GC: The winner of the 14 holes singles was Jerry Maloney with Derek O’Brien second, James O’Halloran 3rd and Daniel F O’Connor 4th with 91 cards processed. In the Ladies singles Margaret Murphy took the win with Catherine McCarthy second and Margaret O’Donoghue third from 29 players.
