LEGAL CORNER
The More you tell the more you sell!!!
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Tralee Advertiser – Neighbours from Hell. Michael and Aine live in an estate where their next-door neighbours are causing havoc. They are extremely noisy especially at antisocial hours, with all night parties, noisy dogs and they are littering in the neighbourhood. The neighbour’s rent the house from a landlord whom Michael and Aine know. Michael and Aine have approached the neighbours and the landlord but neither of them will do anything to sort the issues out. What can Michael and Aine do? The Residential tenancies board has a procedure for dealing with antisocial behavior in private rented property. They firstly will require evidence that the affected parties have tried to sort out matters directly e.g. memos of phone and face-to-face conversations and copy letters sent to the tenant and the landlord. If this has no effect the affected parties can initiate a dispute with the Residential tenancies board. The Board has considerable powers in this situation who can direct the landlord to enforce the tenants obligations and can also be ordered to pay substantial payments for the distress caused by the antisocial behavior. The dispute is first heard by an adjudicator and if his/her determination is not appealed to the Residential Tenancies Tribunal a determination order can be made which is enforceable through the courts. If the case is appealed and taken to the Residential Tenancies Tribunal who can issue a determination, which is legally enforceable also. For Micheal and Aine it is very important that they can prove their case and for this they may need log of events, photographs, witness statements, copy correspondence/emails and/or Garda reports (where applicable). If one did not know who the landlord of the private rented property is then a request to the Residential Tenancies Board should obtain this information. If the landlord is not registered with the board this may result in prosecution of the landlord for non-registration. If the issues with the neighbours related to the standard and maintenance of the property then it would be the local authority one would approach to deal with this, as it is not something that would be dealt with by the RTB. Law Quip: “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” -Elie Wiesel If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy - Solicitors and Mediators, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee M:066 7181 596 M: 087 2604753 mirs@gofree.indigo.ie

Director: Chad Stahelski Assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) once again comes out of retirement when a man from his past Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) comes to him with a marker forcing him to kill Santino’s sister. After John kills her all hell breaks loose because Santino puts a price on John’s head, then everyone goes after John. While it may sound like a plot, the world of John Wick is an ambitious one. Expanding on the original film’s idea of a world full of hitmen, assassins and services for these contract killers. John Wick 2 really stands out from other action films because of its visual flair and amazing action sequences. It does not use cuts when the action kicks off (like in the Taken Franchise). The director used to be a stuntman himself and worked on films such as The Matrix and The Hunger Games and it shows. The camera weaves in between the action and stunts with ease which makes you feel giddy and excited while watching. Chad Stahelski really has improved on the first John Wick. The one downfall of the film is Keanu’s performance. He is perfect for the amazing set-pieces but he delivers his lines like it’s hard for him to talk. His performance is a bit stale but doesn’t take much away from the heart pounding thrill ride of a film. The supporting cast do a fine job and make the film feel even more realistic. Mr.Movie Fact: This is Keanu Revees and Lawrence Fishbourne’s first collaboration together since The Matrix franchise.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CHRISTY MURRAY IS NAMED KERRY COMMUNITY GAMES ‘GOLDEN VOLUNTEER’ Christy Murray, the cofounder of Kerry Community Games, is nominated for a “Golden Volunteer” award for his invaluable contribution to the Kerry games. The awards are part of a series of national celebrations marking the fiftieth anniversary of Community Games. Christy and the late Bob Casey set up Kerry Community Games in 1972, just five years after the national movement was founded. In August 1972, they set up a committee and assembled ten areas in Tralee for the first community games athletics finals with Christy serving as chairman and athletics starter. Over the next few years, Christy worked tirelessly to develop the organisation. He spent long evenings after work driving across the county encouraging parents to set up local committees. Between 1972 and 1975, he served as county chairman, development officer and PRO and was also an athletics starter at the national finals for two years. By the time Christy passed on his county leadership role, there were 49 areas registered
in Kerry. Christy was always available to his local area a true grassroots person and every year since 1972 he has marked out the athletic track. He is always helping with church gate collections and awards nights. Christy always wanted to acknowledge all the children in the area, whether they won county, national or just competed locally. Margaret Culloty, Kerry Community Games secretary, said “Christy was instrumental in the success of the Kerry Games and he set a great example for all the volunteers that followed him. From the start, he could see the great significance of bringing adults and young people together in their communities.” Christy’s great belief in the value of sport was reflected in his own love of athletics. A member of St John’s Athletics Club, he won a number of national sprint medals and continued to compete into his sixties. He is also fondly remembered as an athletics starter. Now 81, Christy never left
Community Games. He is currently president of the St Brendan’s area, where he has held an officer position since 1972. His children and grandchildren all passed through the games as competitors and his children went on to take up officer positions in St Brendan’s. Thousands of adults and young people have benefited
from Christy’s hard work and vision. On behalf of them, Kerry Community Games is proud to nominate Christy for the Kerry Golden Volunteer award and we wish him the very best at the awards ceremony on March 18th in Athlone. An Overall Golden Volunteer will also be named on the day.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SWEET TALE BAKERY TASTING SUCCESS IN ROCK STREET! A few days before Christmas, something interesting happened in Rock street Tralee. . Three members of the one family finally realised a lifelong ambition . Girmante, Arturas and Rima opened their candy coloured Bakery , A Sweet Tale just in time for Christmas . “It was ok over the Christmas, says Girmante “but really when we started working with Chris from The Tralee Advertiser in early January, They really managed to get the word out there that there was a new bakery in Town “ Originally from Lithuania, but living in Kerry for over 13 years , the 2 sisters Girmante & Rima and husband (to Girmante) Arturas spotted a gap in the Tralee market and made their move last Autumn . Now each morning, the premises slowly fills up with all sorts of treats that make the place look like a scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! And
the following day, they have to do it all over again as they are selling out everything they bake EVERY day!. Yes , we do open seven days a week and we bake 7 days a week , we start at 5.30am each morning.” We are delighted to have opened in Tralee , we find the people very friendly and are great at helping to promote us even more . Chris from The Tralee Advertiser advised us to have a couple of new offers each week and promote them as this brings a constant flow of new people calling into us each day “ says Arturas. “There seem to be a few products that have become very popular with our , now , regular customers , Our Custom made to order Cakes for all occasions , Our Lithuania Cake (Honey , Cream )... , Our Apple Tarts, Our Muffins, which people say are too big and too addictive ! and our early morning scones...Also our Half-Cakes
are extremely successful as there are only €4.95 and seem to be more than enough for a lot of our customers “ says Rima . Chris is helping us build up our database of customers and hopefully we will be launching our Sweet Tale Tasters Club shortly . Just in case I forget , our
two specials this week are Apple or Rhubarb Maderia, at only 1.95 ..normally this cake is €3.95 . and we have 2 delicious Vanillas for the price of one ! says Girmante Sweet Really Sweet , at the Sweet Tale Bakery in Rock Street , Tralee 086-2463379
BANNA BEACH IS BACK!
It seems the Kingdom of Kerry is the big place to go after all , having scooped four of the top ten beaches in Ireland, according to Tripadvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Best Beaches survey. Irish beaches didn’t make it into the top 25 beaches in Europe – La Concha Beach in San Sebastian in Spain was the favourite, with Baia Do Sancho Beach in Brazil named as the best beach in the world – but we still have some exceptionally windswept strands. Banna Strand in Tralee, Co Kerry came out on top in Ireland’s best beaches of 2017, taking the crown from previous threeyears-in-a-row winner Inchydoney, Co Cork.

Fitness Tips from the Brandon Gym Craig and the team answer your queries Aaron - Food Volume Vs Food Density What’s the difference?
Food Volume is the size of the food or its mass and food density is the amount of nutrients per gram. Some foods are full of water, Vitamins and minerals and are often high in volume but low in calorie density, this would be called a high volume food Other foods which do not have high water content such as nuts can contain a large sum of calories in a small portion. So even if it is the same size it doesn’t mean that it’s the same calories.
High Volume
High Density
John Fitzgerald Why is important to eat after a workout?
After your workout, your body tries to rebuild its glycogen stores and repair and regrow those muscle proteins. Eating the right nutrients soon after you exercise can help your body get this done faster. It is particularly important to eat carbs and protein after your workout. ...this reduces muscle protein breakdown.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: IMPORTING A CAR INTO IRELAND Question What are the rules about buying a car in the UK and bringing it back to Ireland? Answer In general, all vehicles brought into Ireland are subject to Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and must be registered. If you have imported a vehicle, you must pay VRT and receive the vehicle’s registration certificate showing that you have paid VRT. If you live abroad and are moving to live in Ireland, you may be eligible for a VRT exemption. Even if you are not required to pay VRT, you must still register your vehicle when you move to Ireland. In certain cases, foreign-registered vehicles may be imported into Ireland temporarily by a non-resident without the requirement to pay VRT or register the vehicle. You register the car and pay the VRT at a National Car Testing Service (NCTS) centre. You can get an estimate of the VRT due from the Revenue Vehicle Registration Online Enquiry System. When you register and pay the VRT, a registration number will be assigned to your car. You can obtain vehicle registration plates from the NCTS centre or from any motor factor. If you are importing a new car from another EU state, you have to pay VAT (Value Added Tax), usually when registering the car. If you are importing a new or second- hand car from outside the EU, VAT (and customs duty) is payable. If your vehicle is 4 years old or more, it will have to go through the National Car Test (NCT) immediately. Further information is available in the Revenue guide to VRT and on revenue.ie. HELLO EVERYONE! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. THIS WEEK I’M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT MY CURRENT HAIRCARE ROUTINE. Proper haircare is so important for me. I like to use more high end products on my hair because of all the bleach, dyeing and heat it has taken over the years. So here’s all the products I use on my hair currently. SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER For my shampoo and conditioner I’m currently alternating between two different ones. I like to alternate because I feel my hair gets too used to a shampoo and conditioner after a while so it’s good to switch it up. For shampoo and conditioner I’m currently alternating between Redken and Pureology. Redken Extreme Shampoo & Conditioner: Featuring the exclusive Interlock Protein Network (IPN) and Fortifying Complex. Redkens Extreme Shampoo delivers a targeted care formula for those trampled tresses damaged by Heat Styling, brushing and even chemical processing. This intense conditioning will leave hair protected, healthy, shiny and ultimately more resilient to breakage. Pureology Strength Cure concentrated fortifying shampoo for micro-scarred, damaged colour-treated hair. Removes dulling residues with maximum respect for the scarred, sensitized cuticle. 97% Improved strength after only 1 use of Shampoo, Condition and Split End Salve. Luxuriously creamy formulas help repair and strengthen hair for the perfect balance of strength and velvety softness with extraordinary colour protection. It’s also sulfate free and Vegan so it gets a huge thumbs up from me! EXTRA TREATMENTS: As well as shampoo and conditioner, there are other treatments I use on my hair. Redken Anti-Snap: Leave in Treatment for Sensitised Hair. Unearth the intense conditioning that is the Extreme range. Gifted with an introduction to Redkens brilliant Anti Snap formula, this leave in treatment aids the fight against split ends and breakage. Anti-Snap assists in the protection of hair subjected to the rigours of heat styling, brushing and the chemical process.
So that’s it for this week! Hope you all enjoyed this week’s light hearted post! Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. So this week I’ll be talking about common gym mistakes every beginner can make. Everyone starts as a beginner. As we get comfortable with working out, eventually we learn the basics: how to use the machines, how to observe gym etiquette, and what happens if we don’t wipe the gym equipment. But even after you ditched the training wheels, you could still make grave rookie mistakes that sabotage your progress and leave you frustrated, confused, and exhausted. Even if you worked out for years, it could still happen. 1) SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS: Tackling an insane goal all at once leads to failure: you’ll exhaust your time, willpower, and energy. You’ll also frustrate yourself because it takes so long to achieve. This can then lead to giving up before you’ve even started. 2) NOT TRACKING YOURSELF: Record everything in your workout: what exercises you did, what weight you used, how many reps you did, etc. You should also track your body by taking photos and measuring your bodyweight, inches and body fat percentage. This will highlight your successes and failures so you can adjust your exercise program and diet to get the results you want! 3) NOT HAVING A PLAN: Without a plan, you’ll end up wandering the gym looking for something to do. You’ll never build a great body doing that. There’s no system and you’ll prevent yourself from mastering exercises, waste

time, and miss out on great results. With so many great beginner programs available, pick one, get started, and stick to it. Don’t forget to change it up when it’s not challenging you! 4) SKIPPING WORKOUTS: Some people skip a workout because they’re feeling tired, sore, or lazy. They forget that the secret to building an amazing body is simple, consistency. Honor the commitments you make to yourself. If you decide to workout on Mondays and Thursdays and Saturdays, schedule it in and get it done. If that’s too hard, cut your routine down to suit your body, but never skip it. There’s a difference!
times a week is perfect depending on your body type and goals etc. You need to give your muscles, ligaments, and tendons time between each workout to recover, grow, and get stronger. Remember 3 or 4 good quality sessions are better than 6 or 7 forced ones.
5) OVER DOING IT: There are beginners who live in the gym, workout six times a week, burn themselves out or get injured and then quit. Unless you’re an elite athlete or a high-level bodybuilder, avoid working out too often at the beginning. Doing too much, too soon will slow your progress because of the constant fatigue and lead to overtraining. For most beginners, 3-5

CRISPY FISH WITH SWEET N SOUR SAUCE
ORANGE AND FENNEL ROAST COD
Most Chinese-takeout sweet-and-sour sauces are bright red, gluey and sugary. this version is light as well as a little spicy, which allows the fresh, briny flavor of the crispy fish to come through
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •
1 cup of chicken stock 1/4 cup soya sauce 3 tablespoons rice vineager 2 tablespoons ketchup 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon cornflour 2 tablespoons sherry
• • • • •
1 tablespoon chilli sauce 3 tablespoons oil 1 1/2 tablespoon grated ginger 2 cloves garlic minced 4 trout or bass fillets
• • • • • • • •
METHOD 1.
METHOD 1.
2.
In a small bowl, whisk the stock, soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, sugar, wine, cornflour and chile sauce. In a small saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil. Add the ginger and garlic and cook over high heat, stirring, just until fragrant, 1 minute. Whisk the sauce ingredients, then add them to the pan. Simmer until the sauce is thickened and glossy, 5 minutes. Keep warm over low heat. In a large nonstick pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil until shimmering. Add the fish, skin side down, and press lightly with a spatula to sear the skin for 10 seconds for each fillet. Cook undisturbed over high heat until the fillets are browned and crispy at the edges and just barely opaque on top, about 5 minutes. Flip the fish and cook just until cooked through, about 1 minute longer. Transfer the fish skin side up to plates. Spoon the sauce on top, garnish with the scallions and serve with rice
2 fennel bulbs (about 1 pound each), including the fronds 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon fresh-ground black pepper 1/4 cup fresh orange juice 1 teaspoon grated orange zest 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds 2 pounds cod fillets, cut to make 4 pieces
2.
3.
Heat the oven to 176c. Cut off the tops of the fennel bulbs and chop the leafy fronds. Cut each bulb into 8 wedges. In a large roasting pan, toss the fennel wedges with the oil and 1/4 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper. Spread the fennel in an even layer and roast for 25 minutes. Stir the fennel and rotate the pan so the vegetables cook evenly. Roast 15 minutes longer. Meanwhile, in a glass or stainless-steel bowl, combine the orange juice, orange zest, fennel seeds, and the remaining 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the cod and marinate while the fennel roasts. Remove the pan from the oven and top the fennel with the cod and its marinade. Roast until the cod is just done, about 10 minutes for 3/4-inch-thick fillets. Sprinkle the chopped fennel fronds over the cod

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! AN ENGINEER DIES AND IS SENT TO HELL
He’s hot and miserable, so he decides to take action. The A/C has been busted for a long time, so he fixes it. Things cool down quickly. The moving walkway motor jammed, so he un-jams it. People can get from place to place more easily. The TV was grainy and unclear, so he fixes the connection to the Satellite dish and now they get hundreds of high def channels. One day, God decides to look down on Hell to see how his grand design is working out and notices that everyone is happy and enjoying umbrella drinks. He asks the Devil what’s up? The Devil says, “Things are great down here since you sent us an engineer.” “What?” says God. “An engineer? I didn’t send you one of those. That must have been a mistake. Send him upstairs immediately.” The Devil responds, “No way. We want to keep our engineer. We like him.” God demands, “If you don’t send him to me immediately, I’ll sue!” The Devil laughs. “Where are YOU going to get a lawyer?”
TWO BLONDES ARE IN HEAVEN...
One asks the other, “How did you die? “ “I froze to death, “ says the second. “That’s awful, “says the first blonde. How does it feel to freeze to death? “ “It’s very uncomfortable at first,” says the second blonde. “You are very cold and eventually you’re muscles get numb and you freeze to death. It’s sort of calming. How did you die? “ “Well, “ says the first blonde, “ I had a heart attack. You see, I knew my husband was cheating on me. I came home unexpectedly and went upstairs to find him on the bed with no clothes on . I checked the basement, but no one was there. I ran up to the second floor and checked every room, but no one was there. I ran all the way to the attic, but I had a massive heart attack and I died.” “Wow, “ says the second blonde, “If you checked the freezer we would both be alive.”

A MAN GOES TO THE PHARMACISTS AND ASKS FOR 3 AND A HALF VIAGRA PILLS
A man goes to the pharmacist and asks for 3 and a half Viagra pills. The pharmacist is confused and asks “why 3 and a half ?” The man responds. “Well, Monday I am going to see my mistress and I need two. I need one for Wednesday with my wife. And on Friday, I am going to the sauna and it just needs to look presentable.”
A STUTTERING DUDE WAS UNEMPLOYED...
Once upon a time there was a stuttering lad who could not find work. Finally, he came across a book store with a “help wanted” sign. He went in and got a job. His boss told him that he could not work in the store, but he would walk around the neighborhood selling books door to door. The boss didn’t think the stuttering employee had a chance. After one hour, the stuttering man returned with $1000. The boss could not believe it. The boss sent him out again, and the stuttering man returned with $1000 the next hour. The boss asked him “how do you sell so well?!” The stuttering man said “Well, b-b-b-b-boss, it’s simp-p-p-p-p-p-ple, I j-j-j-just w-w-w-wait t-t-t-till they open the d-d-d-door, and I t-t-t-tell them that they c-c-c-can either b-b-b-buy the b-b-b-b-book, or I c-cc-can r-r-read it t-t-to them.”
THE LOCAL FARMER HAD A WIFE WHO NAGGED HIM ALL THE TIME
One day while he was outside plowing the field, she came out and started nagging him. While she was doing this, the mule kicked her and she died. At the funeral, the ladies came up and talked to the farmer. The farmer nodded his head “yes”. The men came up and talked to him and the farmer nodded his head “no”. One of the towns elders saw what was happening and wondered why he nodded his head “yes” to the ladies and “no” to the men. Then, he went up to the farmer and asked him why. The farmer replied,” Well, when the ladies came up, they told me how pretty my wife’s dress was and how pretty she looked. When the men came up, they asked,’ That mule for sale?’

TORQUING CARS! GENEVA MOTOR SHOW 2017 – WHAT IS IT, WHEN IS IT, AND HOW TO GET THERE
The Geneva Motor Show is one of the biggest events in the European automotive calendar. Held every year in March, it gives manufacturers an opportunity to reveal their latest creations to the world, and it gives us a chance to glimpse these exciting new cars before driving them later in the year. It takes place in Palexpo, a colossal convention centre close to Geneva airport. The site is around 500m south-east of Switzerland’s border with France, on the other side of the runway. It’s organised by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA), which is responsible for a number of high-profile auto shows around the globe, and is more than a century old.
Visiting the Geneva Motor Show 2017
The Geneva Motor Show is open to the public from the 9th to the 19th of March 2017. During the week, the show is open from 10am until 8pm, and on the weekend this is brought forward to 9am and 7pm (Switzerland uses Central European Time (CET) which is an hour ahead of Greenwich Mean time). Switzerland also uses Swiss francs (CHF), which at the time of writing (February 27) 1 franc is worth 80p, or 94 euro cents. Entry to the show costs CHF 16 for adults, CHF 9 for children aged six to 16, pensioners and disabled visitors, and CHF 11 if you buy for a group of 20 people or more. Ticket prices are halved after 4pm on the day. For more, visit the official website here.
Getting to Geneva
The show’s proximity to the airport makes it easy to access from the UK, with flights taking under two hours from London airports. Driving is more interesting, but allow for a realistic journey time of 12 hours. Note that everything is extremely expensive in Switzerland, including parking.
What’s on at the Geneva Motor Show 2017
As always, we already know a lot about what to expect, but there will inevitably be surprises waiting to be revealed. There are the usual suspects – fashionable superminis, bloated SUVs, preposterous hypercars and dubious concepts – but this year there are some particular areas to watch out for: the British contingent has some strong entries, the return of Alpine promises to get heads turning, and the new Honda Civic Type R looks better than ever.
BARN FIND’ MERCEDES 190 SL FOR SALE AT AUCTION FOR £45,000
A Mercedes-Benz 190SL restoration project is being offered for sale with an estimate of £37,000-£45,000. The example being offered for sale was purchased as a restoration project in the mid1970s, but very little work was carried out before it was put into dry storage, where it has remained untouched for about 40 years. The engine has been started every so often, and it is said to start and run well, and the vendor says that the car still drives. Further examples of German engineering at auctioneer Barons’ Classic Winter Warmer sale at Sandown Park near Esher, Surrey on February 28 include a 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo (estimated at £33,000-£40,000), 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet (£15,000-£18,000) and several more Mercedes, including a 2003 SL 350 estimated to sell for £13,000-£16,000. Italian offerings include Alfa Romeo Spiders from 1972 and 1996 (£12,000-£14,000 and £3,000-£4,000 respectively), while the 1972 Alfa Romeo Berlina 2000 is claimed to be a fine example of the increasingly rare 105-series Alfa saloons. It has been part of a private collection in Italy for the last 25 years, stored in a heated, dry garage and is estimated to fetch £8,000-£10,000. There’s also a charming 1977 AutoBianchi Giardinetta. Essentially an estate version of the Fiat 500, this little car has rarely been used in the past 30 years and the interior is in fantastic original condition. Yours for £6,000-£7,000. British sporting cars include a 1998 Aston Martin DB7 Volante (£23,000-£27,000) and a 2000 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage (£19,000-£22,000). Turning back the clock, there’s also a 1937 MG TA which has covered just 2,000 miles since a full nut and bolt restoration about 20 years ago, which is likely to sell for £23,000-£30,000. The sale also includes three cars which would make ideal family classics. A 1953 Ford Prefect E493A needs a little TLC but is estimated at only £3,000-£3,500, while a highly original 1956 Vauxhall Cresta E (with only 31,000 miles on the clock it has been unused for 25 years and is believed to have been part of the British Embassy’s fleet in Paris) carries an estimate of £6,000-£8,000. A 1985 Ford Granada Ghia 2.8i has had just one fastidious owner from new and is realistically estimated at £5,000-£6,000.

FAMOUS KIDS AUTHOR VISITS ST BRENDANS N. SCHOOL IN FENIT Pupils from 3rd to 6th, of St. Brendan’s National School Fenit, were very fortunate to participate in a writing workshop, hosted by author John W. Sexton. This event was organised as part of their World Book Day celebrations. The visit was made possible by the success of 5th class pupil Elise Carey McGibney who won an author’s visit as her prize in the 2016 Trócaire Poetry Ireland poetry competition. Her poem “The Journey” came first in its category.
TWO BROTHERS ! MUNSTER CHAMPIONS ! Tralee Boxing Club Members Patrick McCarthy and Mike McCarthy from Tralee who both became Munster Champions last weekend
John W Sexton is the author of a series of books based on the character Johnny Coffin. At the start of his workshop he spoke about the process of writing books. He told the children that writing a story is like using a washing machine - you have to put something into it to make it work! He showed them how to use a story square, and they collectively wrote a story about dragons. This was a great educational opportunity for the children, as well as being very entertaining. They are all really excited now about dressing up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day on Thursday. 38

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TWENTY YEARS AGO BUT THE MEMORIES NEVER FADE: Can you remember where you were 20 years ago? If you are like me then you will hardly remember 20 weeks ago not to mind 20 years. But one group of basketball players, including some of the greatest this county has ever produced, have no problem this week in remembering 1996 and the first week of March when Tralee Tigers won the Budweiser Super League. And the majority of that squad will be introduced to the crowd at the present custodians of Tralee rightful place at the top of the basketball world – Garvey’s Tralee Warriors at their home game versus Griffith Swords Thunder this Saturday night at 8pm. The full 96 squad was Nigel Palmer, John Teahan, Gerry Galgey, Vinny Murphy, Kieran Fitzgerald, Kieran O Sullivan, Emmanuel Haastrophe, Ricardo Leonard, Maurice Casey (Captain) Coach Timmy Mc Carthy, Assistants Ger Carey, Tim Herlihy. There are a number of connections spanning the 20 years including Garvey’s were the sponsors then and now and present assistant coach Rick Leonard was one of the stars back then. But there is another connection and that is that it was around then when one Kieran Donaghy got the basketball bug. He tells the story in detail in his excellent autobiography – What Do You Think of That and when talking to him this week his memories of that time are extremely vivid. The Star first spotted a basketball ring when visiting his aunt in Tyrone where he was told it’s more of a girl’s game! How wrong that turned out to be. He tells us that it was following the opening game of the 1993-94 season that he wanted to become a Tralee Tiger and seeing and being in awe of the new man in town the 6’7” American Ricardo Leonard. “There was a play when one of our home grown greats John Teahan threw and in-bound ball from the side line and Ricardo just spun off his man, jumped, caught Teahan’s alley-oop and slammed it home before he returned to earth. I have never seen anything like it!

TRALEE ADVERTISER
“The next week I signed up for the u12’s and learned the game from some great coaches. Every night the Tigers trained I would be there watching that team including others like Maurice Casey and the ever colourful Vinnie Murphy and of course to listen to coach Timmy McCarthy – who now is famous for his TV commentaries and his DOWNTOWN and BOOMSHAKALAKA shouts. “And to get the chance as a young teenager to shoot a few hoops with them and for them to acknowledge me in front of my friends was a huge thing and made a lasting impression. It is something that I tell all new players I meet that they have a responsibility in how they treat young fans. The present day Warriors squad are very good at this and have seen how excited the kids of today are when the meet them down town or when they do some coaching in the schools. “The Tigers would win the SuperLeague in 1996 starting a hugely successful ear for Tralee basketball at a time when it was a huge sport in the country. While they were guaranteed the League win before the last game this was one they and they huge crowd in the Sports Complex really wanted them to win. It was against our great rivals St Pauls, Killarney” For Kieran Donaghy the memory of that night 20 years ago is as clear as any of the many great nights he had winning in both football and basketball. “Before the game they switched off all the lights and I went what the hell is going on here! Suddenly there were spotlights and the roar of the commentator welcoming the Superleague champions Your Tralee Tigers! And then the teams ran out to the music and I knew that is where I wanted to be. “But little did I think that 20 years later I would be still playing and in the hunt again for another title. It will be a great night but a nostalgic night at the Complex this Saturday night so don’t miss it!”. And Kieran is right the present Warriors side are on a great unbeaten roll and heading for the play-offs at least. Saturday night will be another big night for the present players against another top side, it will be a great night to celebrate the squad and club of 20
Friday 3rd March 2017
years ago but it will also be a night to remember all those involved in basketball in Tralee, past and present, from the coach of the youngest players to those who played at the top level. All their contributions have counted in the proud and continuing tradition of basketball in Tralee. WARRIORS WIN BATTLE AND ARE UP TO THIRD: This 93-90 away win at UCD was a huge result which pushes the Warriors up to third place in the SuperLeague table. Mark Bernsen’s squad were without Fergal O’Sullivan but had Dusan Bogdanovic back and the big man made a big impact. But it did not look good early on as the Tralee side were not able to unlock the UCD defence while at the other end the Dubliners were scoring freely ending the first quarter 2516 ahead. Warriors made a good comeback in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 4 before UCD hit 3 big three pointers helping them to a 52-35 half time lead. Warriors has to do something and credit to the coach and the players moving to a zone defence curtailing their hosts and themselves picking up the offensive pace. The gap was down to 8 going into the fourth quarter. Warriors were now getting big returns from Trae Pemberton and Kieran Donaghy and the moved ahead with 4 minutes remaining. Both sides went after the win and with 5 seconds to go two Trae Pemberton free throws gave the Warriors a great comeback win. Trae Pemberton top scored with 33 points followed by Donaghy on 23 and Ryan Leonard with 6. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: In the Lee Strand Boys u12 Division 2 St Brendan’s just got the better of Gneeveguilla by the narrowest margin 39-38. The sides had met in the Cup and the Tralee side won by 4 so once again it was expected to be close and the sides didn’t disappoint. St Brendan’s opened the scoring and led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. However the East Kerry side took control in the second and went ahead at the break albeit by 1
point 17-16. The sides were then tied 23 a piece and were trading baskets in a frantic last quarter. Liam Og O’Connor had the honour of hitting Brendan’s last basket in the last few seconds to give them the win 39-38. The standard of play for both sides was a credit to all involved. In other results in Leestrand Boys u14 Division 1 it finished St Mary’s 54-45 St Brendan’s while in the u16’s Division 1 KCYMS defeated St Brendan’s 60-42. SEAN’S TEAMMATE WINS THE LACEY CUP: Another Lacey Cup is confined to history and once again the event proved to be a wonderful success and an exciting day’s racing. The organisers had all the items ticked and even the weather ‘partly cooperated’. 215 riders in all 4 categories started out from Poffs Garage on the Dingle Road and took in the usual 75km route with Gleann nGealt the first major interest point of the race. By then the A1’s had caught the two groups – the A2’s and A3’s who had started before them an at the top Sean Lacey, AquaBlue, was first over the climb. But all eyes were on the Tralee Manor West iBike riders as the Jackie O’Connor Trophy goes to the first host club rider and it was Cillian Tierney who took the honours as he was just Lacey. A group of 19 formed at the front at one stage but again this split to 9 and finally the two leaders got away with last year’s winner Darragh O’Mahony from O’Leary Stone leading the chase. For a spell Lacey and Cathal Moynihan were in that leading bunch but into Castleimaine it was fellow Aquablue rider Sean Hahessy and Newcastlewest’s Paul Kennedy that had pulled clear. At the start of the climb the duo had 45 seconds which was down to 15 seconds at top of Sliabh Mish with Kennedy cresting first to take the Teddy Griffin Trophy. On the race to the finish Hahessy had the legs to take the win. Cathal Moynihan, Manor West iBike was the best of the Kerry riders home in 7th while the Chain Gang’s Tom Brendan O’Connor was another local rider that had a very good day taking the A4 race from George McClean. TRALEE BOYS BOX THEIR WAY TO MUNSTER TITLES: DonieJack Griffin of the Tralee Boxing Club was delighted with the two titles that have come to the club. Jonathan McCarthy and Patrick McCarthy will now go through the All Ireland finals in March. “Patrick was fighting at 48kg and he put in a terrific performance to dethrone reigning Irish Champion Ger McDonagh 4-1. Jonathan, at 42kg had an easier passage and won 5-0 with a comprehensive

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER display from the first to the final bell. “Mike McCarthy was unlucky to lose his 3rd Munster final but still has lots to look forward to for the rest of the season. The club is delighted with the display of all three fighters who are getting the rewards for the hard work they are putting in in training.” The Kerry County Championships for the Boys 1,2,3 will be held at the Tralee Boxing Club on Saturday March 11th with the winners going onto the Munster Championships in the South Side Boxing Club in Limerick. ST BRENDAN’S PARK 13’S BIG DAYS AHEAD: St Brendan’s Park u13’s are having a great season on the national stage and are the last Kerry side left in the Skechers SFAI National Cup. They welcome Evergreen (Kilkenny) to Christy Leahy Park on Sunday March 12th at 2pm. They are also into the u13 SFAI Regional Cup Final where they will take on Aisling Annacotty from Limerick on Saturday March 25th at 2pm. SCHOOLBOYS GIRLS LEAGUE BUSTER AT BIG NIGHT AT THE DOGS: One of the biggest crowds of the year will be at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday night for the final of the GMHD. ie Juvenile Classic plus lots of other top class races including other finals sponsors but Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurances Killarney. The Kerry Schoolboys Girls League are having their fundraising Buster Race and the 2017 Kennedy Squad will also be in attendance. It is also Confirmation day in Tralee so a huge crowd is expected with the gates opening at 6.30pm. Racing will also take place on Saturday night where the first race is off at 7.44pm. The Track is taking entries for the Quilter and Edwards Coursing Bred Stake for 24 Novice greyhounds over 325 yards and the John and Mary Dowling Memorial A1 570 for 36 current A1 greyhounds starting on Friday March 28th. Kerry Motor Club will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic Ford Sierra Cosworth rally car with a special award on its forthcoming Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally car. The Ford Sierra Cosworth was a mainstay of the World and European Rally championships in the mid to late 1980s. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the popular rally car and Circuit of Kerry organisers want to attract as many entries as possible from drivers of the turbocharged, whale-finned machine. The car was officially unveiled at the 1986 Geneva Motor Show ahead of its public launch in July that year taking its maiden victory on the Tour de Corse in May 1988. After its WRC tenure the car was passed down to private teams with many of them finding their way to Ireland and Kerry. One such example is owned by longtime Kerry Motor Club member Pat Barry who came up with the idea. He also wants to extend the invitation to owners of Escort and Sapphire variants of the car in an effort to create the biggest Cosworth-powered entry list for years. He said: “It would be great to get a batch of Cosworths together, especially since it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Sierra in the World championships. It has never been tried before.” ST BRENDAN’S OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: Art: Club members took part in the County Art competition and while they did not win any medals they put in some great works.
